With over 150 stalls under one roof, this is one of Plymouth’s best spots for fresh food, unique finds, and real local character.  From the moment I walked in, I appreciated how bright and well-laid-out the space is. The modernist building, with its scalloped roof and natural light flooding through rooflights, creates a sense of openness.  The aisles are spacious enough to browse without feeling cramped, though during busier times crowds do build around popular food stalls.  The variety of stalls is excellent. I found plenty of fresh produce, fishmongers (like The Market Plaice), butchers, and fruit & veg of good quality.  There are also stalls selling souvenirs, clothes, gifts, artisan crafts and things you don’t always see in big shopping centres—some real hidden gems.  For food, the market delivers: international choices (Turkish, Thai, etc.), satisfying street-food style stalls, baked goods and sweets.  Practical things are good too. The market is open six days a week (Monday-Saturday), from early morning until late afternoon (closed Sundays).  There’s parking right at the market car park, though it fills up fast. Visited here in August 2024 with family. Food was very good, however when the chefs cooked our food and placed it on the service area (under warming lights) they rang the bell multiple times and none of the service staff collected it (a lot of service staff were around the corner chatting amongst themselves instead of working). So we had to inform the service staff that the food was waiting and getting cold. That said though, the food was really good just slightly under temperature. The location and décor of the place was brilliant. But the toilets were not clean, I was informed by the females I was eating with that the sanitary bin in the female toilets were overflowing. There was enough service staff to keep on top of basic service and cleaning; the eating area was clean though. The very good food was let down by the service staff.

We ordered crispy calamari, cod fillet along with fries and drinks. I can definitely say that they have the best fish and chips that you must try when visiting Plymouth. The location is amazing with great views over the harbour. Brought back childhood memories as this used to be Plymouth fish market. We visited for lunch and it was vibrant but not too busy and there was no wait to be seated. Staff were excellent and very friendly. We have visited Barbican Kitchen 3-4 times now, on our visit to see family in Plymouth, from London. We always make a point to have a date night here. It is our most favourite place to eat, even amongst the Michelin-starred restaurants we have been to. We just love the cosy, unstuffy, relaxed atmosphere of this restaurant. The ingredients are always the best quality, seasonal and fresh- this is reflected on the pleasantly ever-changing menu. We love trying different plates and love the recommendations from the staff. The prices for plates are more than fair - they reflect the quality of the cooking, the ingredients and the service. We know that if this were in London, we'd likely pay more than double our bill for the same food! The variety of options are truly exciting. Portion sizes are just perfect, if not generous. There is something for everybody and every 'food-mood' you are in. My partner has thoroughly enjoyed their beef burgers and loves their grilled steak options! I have a personal affinity for the 'catch of the day' and the other fish dishes on offer. I also often find myself dreaming about my next encounter with their sticky toffee pudding... A special mention must be made for the staff that work here (won't name names for privacy reasons). Attentive, not intrusive or pressurising and incredibly welcoming. It is on the pricier side, however the quality of the food is amazing and very well presented which makes it worth it. I’d recommend the caramelised onion and goats cheese tart and butternut squash risotto…. both were divine. The truffle and parmesan fries are also a MUST - they’re the best I’ve had! The restaurant is in a convenient location right on the historic Barbican. The restaurant is small, bu the atmosphere is homely - it really does feel like you’ve stepped into someone’s front room rather than a typical restaurant. It’s family-run and has a lovely, authentic vibe. It was quite busy when we went, and the space between tables was a little tight, which made it feel a bit crowded. Service was overall good. One of the ladies who served us was welcoming, but the other seemed a bit indifferent, perhaps due to the busy lunchtime rush. The menu is quite big with a Greek twist. We ordered fish and chips and the seafood platter, and both dishes were absolutely spot on. The portions were generous, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. Lots of them so what do they all know that we currently did not…. Greeted straight away, given a table and menu which was actually three menus quite vast selection. I opted for Greek then changed my mind to seafood settled on a mixed grill then ordered Greek. If you are indecisive make sure you allocate more time here. I was swayed by the table next to me having moussaka as it looked superb. My partner who’s a catch went for the cold seafood which she received in abundance personally sometimes seafood I find it to be a little small for me but this plate was full so much so I had to assist. During this time I observed other plates and food envy is high everything just looked amazing not that I would have swapped mine I just wished I could eat 6 or 7 plates… as mentioned it’s not dazzling here there’s nothing spectacular about the place like the other ‘fancy’ big chain restaurants we looked into but they don’t need it. It’s all about the food which was spectacular and for me if I’m going out eating it’s my only concern to be honest I don’t feel they are trying to impress they are just doing food and doing it very well that it impresses you as standard. You want good food here it is. The service I also thought was great very attentive we were serviced very well only slight issue was with the amount of head on the beer, we asked, they fixed, problem solved. I would say prices were good too, living in Newquay where your stung as a tourist everyday it was nice to be a tourist and be saving money whilst vastly improving the quality and experience. I chose pork with a beef croquette as a side. The fit out of this venue is beautiful very well thought out. Everywhere you look is something interesting / pretty. The space is multi level but not multi floors, kinda like an ant farm or rabbit warren. The roast came out and the next minute of my life was filled with wonder and excitement I have not felt since I was a child at the circus. The pork was put down in front of me on one plate with some super crispy potatoes, a Yorkshire pud and a puree that had the sweetness of parsnip. Then the carrots are put in front of me on their own plate. The greens on a different plate. The cauliflower cheese on another one. A dipping bowl of apple compote. And a gravy jug. Plus the plate with my croquettes. It was like a clown car. A seemingly endless supply of food coming off my waitress’ tray. It was such an impressive display that a table of 4 sitting near me outside decided to order food after seeing it all. This place is good and I have the completely burned mouth to prove it. They warned me it was hot, but I could not help myself. The pork is tender, well seasoned and the crackling might be worth your first born child (go on, you’ve got spares). Every single side was worthy on its own. And the croquettes were a dalliance of textures and flavours. The staff were friendly and helpful even though it was very busy and through the card machine not working outside. ————— I am back for a second go, to test the waters and see if this place was a one hit wonder or their sophomore album is just as good. But I am here on a normal day. Not on Sunday roast. Now the quandary. Do I get a burger, or the pork belly. On one hand I can get a burger anywhere, and pork belly is less frequent so the overall enjoyment of my life might be enhanced. On the other hand the pork roast was so good it feels inevitable that the pork belly will pale in comparison. I decided on the three course meal, of which the burger was not an option. Course 1 - Humus & chorizo. There is a nice citrus kick in the hummus that cuts through the richness of the hummus and chorizo. It was texturally a bit grittier than I had hoped but we’re grasping at straws here. The flavour was very good. Course 2 - Pork belly. The pork belly was a bit under rendered. It was lovely. But no comparison to the Sunday roast. That was perfectly rendered. With crackling. The regular lunch, was crackle-lacking. It was well seasoned and enjoyable but I find myself scrolling through the photos of the Sunday roast like a hot ex-girlfriend. Thinking of what could have been. That being said, the chips and sauce that come with lunch, far exceed the potatoes from the roast. Course 3 - Brownie. The size was disappointing but the fastest way to turn that around is with taste and this did not disappoint. The brownie was soft, warm and fudgy. The quail egg scoop of ice cream atop it allowed a creamy texture to fill each bite after the supplied jug of sauce is applied. For what might be the first time, in a long time, I have no idea what the sauce is. There is a caramelised toffee taste and some grit within that tastes of caramelized sugar. If I had to describe it in 3 words - sticky toffee chocolate. As a final note, CHECK YOUR BILL. I did not, and upon reflection a 3 course meal was £26 with all tap beer half off, I had 3. Even if each beer was £8 that puts my total at £38. I added 20% tip cause the waiter was very attentive. We’re now just over £45. But my bill was £55… I’m not saying they ripped me off or there was a mistake, but if not the beer was very expensive.

I got the potato skins starter and the stir fry spaghetti pasta as my main, followed by the crème brûlée for dessert. Overall my food was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it- my only input is that personally i thought my starter was too heavy for me so i couldn’t finish my main meal which was a shame because it was so delicious and I hated to waste it! However the atmosphere here definitely needed some work, the decor was confusing and sort of reminiscent of a chinese restaurant? whilst the speakers were blasting upbeat music similar to that in which you would hear in a club? it did become quite distracting and it was a shame as I believe a good atmosphere definitely adds to the overall experience. I personally would recommend something slower paced, that can blend into the background a lot easier allowing for a calmer and more appealing atmosphere. Overall, with the combination of the wonderful service and the amazing food i would most definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family. :)

I’ve done a fair few distillery tours and this was by far the worst one I’ve ever been too. It’s relatively informative but the tour guide we had was rough. She basically yelled at us the entire time like she was leading an outdoor river cruise with no microphone. There were “jokes” in the script and it felt almost like she was trained to do a high energy tour, but has been imprisoned here for decades and it has drained all life and energy out of her. The bar is fit out beautifully and the bartender was lovely. The gift shop was underwhelming and was manned by two ladies in the middle of a d&m and were all consumed. I get that these tours are feeders to buy more stuff (booze, bric-à-brac, etc) but whoever is in charge needs to revamp this entire process.

I'd never heard of it until I was looking around online for somewhere new to try, it's right on the waterfront on Plymouth Hoe but is hidden away down some steps behind a coffee shop I was pleasantly surprised when we went to try Maritimo for the first time! The venue is secluded and has an outdoor balcony above the water where you can sit, eat & drink above the sea with lovely views of the surrounding Plymouth sound & coastline - perfect if you want to dine outside on a hot summer's day! The food was of a good standard of quality & was decently priced (some of the dishes vary a bit depending on what you get) but overall, all of the dishes that I've tried so far have been very nice! With the nature of tapas, the dishes are quite small so I'd say 2-3 dishes are enough for one person, you can also order a variety of dishes & do trades with each other if you want to have a little try of more of the dishes! The chorizo with red wine sauce & the camembert dishes are definitely my favourites from what I've tried so far, I'll definitely be back to try more soon!

You are so close to the sea, you can literally touch it. I stopped off on a Sunday evening. I was cordially welcomed by the staff and directed to a seat. The table was at the rear of the restaurant, so the view was obscured, so a tip if you want a sea view, book in advance 😀. The limited view across the stunning Plymouth Sound was however lovely. The ribs arrived quickly and we're very tasty. They came with Western cutlery, but I was able to ask for chopsticks, as I did not wish to get my hands too dirty. As noted the ribs were great, but I would have preferred a finger bowl to clean my fingers. Likewise, cheap paper napkins should really be replaced by cotton napkins. I know it may be a pain to clean, but this would really up the scale of the restaurant. The main course was again excellent. Fresh vegetables, lots of chicken and the rice was perfect. I didn’t know the area or have a reservation and my host recommended Wet Wok for its consistently good food, service and friendliness, saying that I would be fine there as a solo female from out of town. The staff were very welcoming, kind and helpful and accommodated me despite no reservations. It was only once I was on the ferry that I realised my purse was missing and I had no phone signal/internet access. I managed to contact the guesthouse and check lost property on the ferry and at the port but no joy. I’d given up to be honest and it was only on my return to Plymouth 3 days later I was able to phone Wet Wok who to my amazement and delight confirmed that they had my purse and contents and had tried running up the steps after I’d left to find me and even then had tried what they could from the info on my driving licence to contact me and said would have handed into the police if I had not contacted them by the weekend. In this day and age, it was heartwarming and such an enormous relief to find such honesty and consideration for a unknown customer. Wet Wok and its lovely staff are to be commended. I have written to thank them properly and showed my appreciation in the traditional way on collecting my purse. Even then the staff tried to tell me there was no need but, in my book, such honestly and kindness should be rewarded. It was quite when we arrived, we hadn't booked but they were able to seat us. The drinks are bit limited but they have ale, beer and cider along with soft drinks. We reviewed the menu and ordered two different mains, both very tasty and filling the one let down was the flat bread which was cold, stiff and not all that appetitesing. We also felt up to having a pudding which were very nice, triple chocolate browny and a Turkish delight rose sundae, the browny was light in the sponge but heavy on the chocolate very nice. I would happily recommend this place and when back down in Plymouth it will be a choice between here and Dunya.

We sampled a starter and a main from the 2 course for £28 menu, i felt was very reasonably priced for the quility of food. For our main we had the pan fried stone seabass, served with creamy mash, mussels in a white wine sauce, batter tuile and roast spring onions. I decided I fancied trying a take-out so popped in and the place was empty, fair enough. It strikes me more of a café place rather than a late evening restaurant anyways. I asked if I could get the 3 course deal - not available for take out. Asked for a garlic bread starter - not available. Asked for a brownie dessert - not available, cheesecake - not available. I wasn’t left with much to go with. I ended up ordering the jerk chicken which comes with rice and peas. I waited over 30 minutes, and was eventually presented with someone I’m fairly sure was sitting on the side for the past 10 minutes. Ok… maybe the quality is fantastic. It was indeed a very wet day so we headed over to The Box and as I love a museum with local history, I was looking forward to the visit. You used to get a salad and coleslaw and the potato was presented in a long box to accommodate it all, however now all you get is a tiny box with a potato in it and no accompaniments. The tuna was bland, the potato was freezing cold and slimy, they didn’t give us ANY cutlery? So how were we supposed to eat it? The butter in the potato made the box disintegrate and I ended up with butter all over my lap. It just tasted awful? Soggy and unappetising. I can’t believe I spent £16 on something I could have made way nicer at home for a fraction of the price?! This place has honestly gone majorly downhill, I used to rave about it all the time but now I’ll be telling everyone to AVOID at all costs. What we were presented with was honestly insulting, don’t know how they’re getting away with it? Actually worse than Spud U Like and didn’t think anything could top that!

The skin was so crispy, and the simplicity of lemon and salt really allowed the fish’s flavour to stand out. We also ordered the bitoque and I LOVED the rice. Our server was a young student (criminology) who had the wonderful inter personal skills rarely seen in serving staff. We ordered a couple of burgers, steak loaded fries and calamari to share. We had booked it in advance, but we went there with two extra people, knowing that if it was too busy two of us would’ve been happy to leave. However, as soon as we walked in and confirmed our booking the lady who worked there raised her voice at us and spoken in a condescending manner bare in mind the shop was half empty and remained half empty for all our session. Even whilst we were picking out what we wanted to paint she was telling us to hurry up which again was very rude. The actual painting was very fun but the interactions we had with that lady was awful. I also noticed that she allowed another group to come in with an extra person but did not raise her voice at them at all. This made us feel even worse as it felt quite personal and it made us feel very out of place. We were coming to the end of our two hour slot with 15/20 minutes to go but she came over and spoke to us in a rude tone saying we need to leave so other people can come in. However, when she spoke to the other group she apologised to them for hassling them to leave and overall treated them in a kind manner. The difference in the way she treated a different group of people to us was apparent and it was very upsetting. It’s a shame because the actual pottery painting was so fun and peaceful however I would not come back purely due to the way we were treated and spoken to.

Joe and Jesse are incredibly attentive and are the nicest couple we've met. When we visited, the lady was really nice to us. She was more than willing to have a chat and was helpful. There is also a gift shop on this level. Upstairs, there is a small museum which tells the story of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower steps. Particularly interesting for American visitors. There are various activities for children and is informative. The museum also provides fantastic views over the Barbican and Plymouth Sound. Entry to the museum is very cheap. If you are already on the Barbican it is worth a visit.
