Great museum! Worth seeing. The kids really enjoyed getting to see the ins and outs of the rig. Very informative, reasonably priced. There is a gift shop in the entrance building with items for all ages. The rig is multiple stories with an open concept to explore the permitted areas at your own speed and leisure. Very cool! This museum was a welcome surprise. It has 3 floors, and 2 outdoor decks. Much larger than I thought it would be. It took me about 2 hours to read everything, etc.. It really brightened my day and has great views. This is a hidden gem in Galveston. They have a cute gift shop with a variety of items for adults and children. Including Christmas ornaments!
I went back last week again with some family. I'm not sure what happened to this place. Nobody to greet us on the rig when we arrived at the top of the ramp, nobody to give directions, movie just plays in a loop without a scheduled time. This place wasn't as fun and felt very disorganized. The brown haired girl selling tickets was the most professional and most informative. Everyone else ignored us. Please improve and be like you were before.

My son read almost every single exhibit which is something he doesn't normally do in museums.
There is a scavenger hunt if you want a challenge. Be sure to ask for the paper when you first ever the rig. 👍
They request that you keep an eye on your children because there are some areas especially the catwalk on the third floor that young children should not be left alone on. It's not unsafe, but it is high up.
Check out the locker on the third floor for an experience of being a rig worker and grab some gear for dress up!

Very detailed and thoughtful laid out exhibit to explain how we get oil out of the ground.

What a lovely Railroad Museum. For a Saturday it was not busy...but it's well layed out and the range of exhibitions is great. Lady at the entrance desk was welcoming and polite and told us everything we needed to know. We managed to even ride an open caboose on a long stretch along the cruise terminals. Loved everything about this place. Ate from the concession on site. Cheap and cheerful and delicious..again super friendly staff and decent prices.
After we spent a considerable time here, it was close to the historic street cars that go around Galveston.

The largest train/railroad museum we have came across. Tons of train cars and cars to walk through and explore. Lots of displays showing how life was on the cars and what was commonly used on them. Staff was very nice, no wait to see anything, and there’s free parking.
The only thing that did surprise me, maybe because the Rosenberg museum spoiled us, was there’s only two small rooms of model trains. There are shelf’s with tons of model trains but they are on display, unlike Rosenberg who has built huge working city like displays to show them off.
Overall though, the kid loved it and would come back again. We didn’t get to enjoy it but if we would have came the next day they do offer some sort of train rides.

I was so excited to go here on our vacation from Ft. Worth but it wasn't that fun. My younger kids had fun but my 13yo and my husband thought it was pretty lame. Got some great photos though! The tall ship Elissa is a must-see on our trips to Galveston. Tickets can be purchased at the adjacent Seaport Museum. Tickets are for both the museum and the Elissa. There is a cute little gift shop with gift ideas for most anyone. The Seaport Museum has been changed up since our last visit several years ago. The self guided tour guides you through the path of an immigrant coming to America. The exhibits reflect many of Galvestons landmarks. But the best part is boarding the Sailing Ship Elissa and exploring how people traveled back in the day. The crew berths and cabins seem ridiculously tiny to modern eyes. This should really be called the Gresham house because that is focus of the tour. Being called the Bishop’s Palace, we thought we would learn about this building’s use as the Bishop’s Palace. Instead we learn almost exclusively about the Gresham family and how the house was before the Bishop lived there. The stained glass of St Therese of Lisieux and the chapel room are beautiful, but you can see that on the self guided tour. You won’t hear much about them at all from the guided tour. They had no idea why the bishop chose this saint for the glass, and only explained that it was added after the previous glass blew out. When in the chapel, the discussion is about what it looked like before the bishop lived there. It seems that the beautiful decorations in the chapel and its use are important and likely more entertaining than knowing a daughter lived there and she had some stuff in the room.

We went 4 days after Christmas and we're able to go in with no wait. We took a narrow staircase up from the basement gift shop to the 1st floor and were awed with the level of decor! The style is quite gaudy but the craftsmanship in the woodwork is something to be admired!! I really enjoyed the chance to visit such a historical sub in the Cavalla.. I've been out of the Navy for many years but lately I've developed a strong love of history, especially military history. The layout on the self guided tour was nice on the sub but the escort ship has many sections closed for restoration or just not to be toured. Besides the ship & sub are several different guns and a landing craft. I really enjoyed the museum and hats off to the people behind it.

I absolutely loved it here! First time really checking it out I went along on a class trip for my daughter's class & we adored the adventure! They have it obviously in Moody Mansion first off which is so very very very cool to have the kids museum in such a historic, beautiful & historically rich building! The stations were all very hands on, creative & educational as well as fun, cute & often crafty. The kids had a blast & as an adult I still found a lot of information, facts & pieces of history along the way to keep my attention & interest as well. There's plenty of space here too being a mansion & all lol... So there's plenty of room for kids to play & kinda run around & explore on their own a little within the marked off areas like... The outside area is massive for the little ones & they really can get a feel for exploring the grounds a bit on the outside area of the place. The whole thing overall wasn't too long for a kid but wasn't too short to not be worth the time or money to attend & experience the place. It was an overall very positive experience & quite memorable to her even at that young of an age... She can still recall the event fairly well to this day & she is 11 years old now. For being a school trip I feel like the management or whatever handled it well, I didn't feel like it was just chaotic or aimless or a free for all or anything... Which happens when going to any establishment with a large group of kids all too easily I'm sure, lololol. I think the walk & tour kinda thing through the activities & building seemed to be fairly well set up & executed. I would like to go back now with her a little older & us going on our own & separate from an entity this time to check it out a little differently & more in depth, so I've only gone with an organized group but this far all I've experienced & read & known of the place has been overwhelmingly positive. Def recommend a trip if you have smaller children or if you're an adult I know the Moody Mansion tour side is a great place to learn some history about the island & that building itself as it's got quite a history of it's own. The preserved older buildings & architecture here are very prideful points of interest & history here for Galveston & it's locals... We love the rich history preserved in these locations & keeping it alive through education & experiences is important... It's lovely to see Galveston & the community here make such an effort to preserve, remember & share it's history! Highly recommend checking the place out, great experience! This was such a beautifully restored ship! So much history and craftsmanship. The museum was so great too, I had family immigrate from Ireland and come in through Galveston. Was lucky enough to do one of the day sails they offer in the spring on the Elissa. A little spendy, but what an amazing experience!
There are very few operating historic tall ships in the world you can sail on, so if you get the chance, absolutely do this. We were immediately welcomed stepping on the property! After paying $15 (each person) we were offered a self guided tour or complimentary tour guide. We've been here before, so I knew where to park but the GPS did NOT know and kept telling us to drive around to the back for some reason. Staff is incredibly helpful and available to answer questions. We arrived at 11 AM on a wed so no crowds. The body exhibit was cool but brief. Well worth it if you're into science, but I almost wish they had someone with a medical background and a laser pointer available to answer questions. my 3 year old found the interactive body screen incredibly amusing though it wasnt designed for kids it was hilarious watching her mess with it. Visited the gift shop and wish they had more anatomy merch -were weird like that, but bought everything they did have anyway. Guys - give us MORE enamel pins of cut up anatomy please, also puzzles dissectable plushies etc. Theres a market for it, I promise! Afterwards we hit up the food court and souviner shop by the rainforest which had a stellar collection of graphic tees.
