Heard a lot about this place. We had Breakfast Tacos and Huevos Rancheros. Not much of a difference than one comes in Toastadas and other one on a taco. Food was very flavorful. What an incredible meal. I got the evening special - Salmon and langosteen with morra sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. Nothing like anything i've ever had. The portion of salmon was huge and juice and the langosteens were delicious. The entire meal was an experience as everything went together so well. It was also a very good size. Besides this the atmosphere in the space is tranquil with a relaxing vibe, the service was top-notch, they were so kind, smiley and friendly, and the chef was a wonderful host and the matriarch hostess makes you feel like it’s your home. I really enjoyed my time here and couldn’t wait to go back and try other things on the menu.
And lucky for me when i went back I went for a birthday celebration. What an amazing time! I had octopus and shrimp appetizers-SOOO GOOD!! Also had the filet mignon and langoustine and my wife got the corvina with scallops. Both were absolutely delicious with unique flavors!!
We also had some seafood paella, which was out of this world and delicious coconut cake and lemon cake also made by the chef. He can COOK!!! You won’t be disappointed! This is a must try in Cuenca.

My husband and I went to dinner tonight at Captain&Co. and had a fabulous experience. I know fish and one of my favorite fish to eat is robalo. The chef came to our table with a generous robalo steak to show us prior to cooking it and we shared stories of catching various types of fish. He cooked the fish to perfection. Also, my husband’s steak filet was ordered medium and consistently cooked at the right amount. The servers were competent and charming and the ambience was like a warmly-lit garden. Il cuy risulta piacevole al palato e ricorda molto, sia per il sapore della carne sia per il fatto che deve essere mangiato con le mani, essendo pressoché impossibile da tagliare con il coltello, il nostro coniglio.
Lady Barbarita preferisce gustarsi una parillada (una grigliata) di carne, ma assaggia ben volentieri qualche pezzetto di cuy e la sua croccante pelle!

I really wanted to write a positive review because I love Indian food and I'm grateful it's available here in southern Ecuador. However, having eaten here three times over the past three months, I can't recommend this place.
Examples: the garlic naan has no garlic flavor to it, the 'picante' spicy option has twice been almost flavorless devoid of hot spice and one other time it was extremely hot. Tonight's chicken was more black carbon than chicken and had zero taste of the spices it was supposedly cooked in. I have no idea who they paid to review them 4.4 stars but this place has to be some of the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten.
We paid $22 and only ate the $2 nachos. The burritos were dry and filled almost entirely with mushy beans. The tiniest amount of meat and an oily salad.

We highly recommend El Tunel for almuerzos. Our Peace Corps friends introduced us to this restaurant 5 years ago and we have gone back often. It’s hard to find a better value and the food is always tasty. Usually there is a choice between two meat entrees, or sometimes fish. Fresh squeezed juice, soup, mote or popcorn, ají, segundo, and small dessert is $2.75.
The set lunch menu is posted on a white board at the entrance on calle Honorato Vasquez. The almuerzos meal is actually brought in from outside and seems to arrive slightly after 12pm most days.
The small staff team and the atmosphere are nice, too. There's actually three floors of seating but most stay on the ground floor for quick service. Clientele is a mix of locals and expats. On our weekly visits, we can tell we're not the only "regulars."

UPDATE (Feb 2025): After trying tofu from several other sources (including Supermaxi and a Japanese grocery in town), we can attest that the freshly made tofu (and gluten de trigo, elsewhere known as seitan) is top-notch and as good as any we've had in China and Hong Kong. It's also less expensive than the other sources we've tried. Love them.

Though it's a good mile walk out of the center, it's worth it for the value. We found this place 5 years ago and it's still going strong. Food here is all vegetarian with a slightly Taiwanese twist.
For the almuerzos lunch plate, you get four different sides which are served in large portions on top of rice. There are several choices of juice. Menu of the day - juice, soup, plus 4 selections with rice - is $3. (If I remember correctly, in the "before times" you could choose your 4 things but now it's a set menu.)
The tempura-battered fish, vegetables, or soy "meat" have always been tasty, and the steamed broccoli was really well done, too. The portions are quite large, so you could probably share with two people if you're not too hungry.
There's plenty of seating indoor or outdoor, and SuperMaxi is not too far away if you need to run some errands!

This place is a gem. I try to go every other day or so to pick up some awesome bagels (only sourdough, but it IS a proper bagel. Trust me I know, I grew up by some of the best bagel places in CT). Great breads (even gluten free!) and croissants as well. Really, everything is good here. What you see is what you get, so if you come later in the day, your favorite bread or pastry might be sold out!

Hueca serving $1.50 sandwich de pernil or $2 combo with sweet coconut drink. There are three small tables inside, regularly cleaned between guests.
Their ají is creamy and not spicy (which we appreciate!), we think made with tomate de arbol base. We could easily eat at least 4 of the sandwiches! Order and pay at the counter.
