Lighthouses
The Lighthouse of Peñiscola, also known as Faro de Peñiscola in Spanish, is a must-see attraction located below the Castle in the City of the Sea. While visitors cannot access the viewing platform, they can still enjoy exceptional views from the balcony area with benches available. The lighthouse offers outstanding sunset views and a charming atmosphere. In addition to sunning on the beaches, visitors can explore the town's delicious food and cobbled streets in the old village.
Lighthouse located just under the Castle. Was inaugurated in 1899 with the light fueled by paraffin, then subsequently oil. Electricity arrived in 1929 and the last update was in 1970. Interesting that the light can be seen up to 23 nautical miles away.
Guyver I — Google review
Mesmerising… perhaps having sunrise/sunset tours at the lighthouse will be a great idea (not to make the area more touristy…)
Edwin T — Google review
Very nice on the outside, and although I didn't visit the inside because you have to pay, I am guessing it is beautiful too. It's located right next to the Castle which means to get there you need to walk up hill for a bit 😜 but it's worth seeing.

Historic Walking Areas
Bufador is a natural blowhole located in Peniscola, known for its distinctive "snorting" sound and powerful water jets. This seven-meter high natural erosion formation opens up to the sea, offering visitors an original natural spectacle. Positioned next to the castle, it also houses the image of the city's patron saint. Visitors can explore this unique spot by standing in a specific corner indicated by the wall, where they can uncover all of its hidden secrets.
Such a cute and picturesque old town around the citadel. Wouldn't have expected that before coming to Peñíscola!
P R — Google review
It’s easy to miss, as signage isn’t really good. There isn’t much to see here - really just a hole in the ground. It’s definitely not worth making a special trip to visit. However, if you’re already in the old town and you’re touring shops, the castle, the seashell house, and enjoying the surrounding area then it’s a neat spot to stop by for three minutes.
Matt K — Google review
Very interesting natural phenomenon, especially when the sea is rough. Needs better signposting to location.
Icey 3 — Google review
The waves from the ocean were crushing in the hole, creating a big splash upward and exploding sound. It is located outside and is free.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Fortress
Castell de Peníscola is a massive medieval fortress located on the seafront, once serving as a papal seat. The castle offers tours and hosts cultural events. Visitors can enjoy unparalleled views of the sea and the castle from modern, well-equipped rooms with spacious terraces. The surrounding old town features stunning white-washed houses, stone steps, narrow alleyways, and hidden viewpoints.
Peñíscola Castle is an incredible place to visit—rich in history and full of charm. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll love knowing that parts of the series were filmed here, and walking through the same locations feels surreal. The castle itself is beautiful, well-preserved, and offers breathtaking views of the coastline and the surrounding town. It’s a perfect blend of history and scenery. The area around the castle is just as enjoyable, with lots of small shops to pick up souvenirs and plenty of restaurants with stunning views, making it a great spot to enjoy lunch or dinner after exploring. The beach is also fantastic—clean, lively, and just steps away from the old town. Altogether, Peñíscola offers a perfect mix of culture, food, and relaxation.
Iwona C — Google review
Views for days. You can enjoy both the castle and the garden for a moderate price of 5 euro / adult. Lots to visit and explore. Perfect gateway for a cloudy day so you can enjoy the views without breaking a sweat. l
Alex T — Google review
Peniscola Spain is the beautiful setting for this Castle jewel. It costs 5 euro to tour the Castle and Garden, each. Shoes or sandals with good traction will serve you well as the walk up to the Castle is on very smooth and worn stone steps, walk ways and streets, and dont forget you still have the walk down. This castle is amazing to see in person and has a long and interesting past. Must Visit!
Ron M — Google review
Landmark & Historical Castle This is the Spanish Mont Saint Michel, it is really nice to see and I believe unique in Spain. This Castle sits on the see and looks great from afar. In the town itself you can see a few narrow streets a few restaurants. We enjoyed wandering around here, and can only highly recommend visiting!
Paul V — Google review
Great old Castillo. Knights Template etc. interesting old town with good photo opportunities. €3.50 entrance to the castle for young and concessions such as over 60, a bit upset they didn't query our age.,€5 for normal entry. Enjoyable couple of hours. Large and steep steps in places. Well worth the visit.
Michael C — Google review
Beautiful castle as seen in The Game of Thrones (GOT) Season 6. Well maintained with plenty of beautiful views of the city and beaches. Patking downtown is available. Nice walk up to the castle.
David G — Google review
A stunning medieval castle with incredible views over the sea and the old town. Full of history, charm, and beautiful architecture – a must-see when visiting Peñíscola.
Daniela P — Google review
Amazing views to the sea, the pennisula, and the local beaches! The view is the best part of the experience, although, the castle does have a rich history, esp.the story of Pope Luna, and the castle garden was used in the shooting of A Game of Thrones. Sun block is recommended. ☀️🇪🇸🌅

Visitors are treated to centuries of magic and illusion, uncovering the well-kept secrets of renowned magicians.
Peñiscola is not all beach, views and castle! If you love magic and quick-stop museums, this one is for you!! Vicent was really fun!!

Peniscola Magic Museum Yunke I recently visited the Museum of Magic, and it was a fascinating experience that blends history, mystery, and spectacle in a captivating way. From authentic exhibits used by famous illusionists to interactive installations that challenge your perception of reality, the museum offers a true journey into the world of illusion. The guided tour was excellent—well-informed and sprinkled with live magic moments that added a special flair to the visit. The kids had a great time, but even the adults like us were surprised and intrigued through out. I highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in magic, history, or simply looking to spend a hour in a unique and enchanting place! All the best from Transilvania(Dracula’ place)
HALAȚIU — Google review
I did the magic tour, I loved it, Súper interesting and with very entertaining magic included. The place is great and very well laid out I definitely recommend it. The tour was presented by Borja who made it very special. Do not miss it if you go to Peñiscola Recommended for the whole family
Maria M — Google review
First of all, im Not spanish-speaking, we booked the museum tour and the show, I wouldn't do it again. There is a lot of spanish in this, and if you can't understand a lot it's not a great experience. We booked the "Comedy -show" so a big part of it is to understand the jokes...let's say we haven't laughed a lot, the tricks were fine but all in all for 120€ too expensive...the Museum should state a warning for some shows that Spanish is highly recommended...very unfortunate.
Lukasz K — Google review
Do not undertake this tour if you cannot speak Spanish! My family booked it as it was not made clear that the tour was Spanish only. We were told we would get a refund but have been refused! Effectively they stole our money! Not a nice company.
Richard W — Google review
We had an amazing time here, attended by Alex. Exceeded my expectations a lot

Very nice place, you can feel inside a magic house literally. They explained little bit about history of magic shows and make a little show at the beginning. 100% recommended

Hostal Dios Está Bien is a charming and informal hotel located in the heart of Peniscola's old town. The cozy rooms and studios feature original stone walls, modern bathrooms, and contemporary decor. Guests can enjoy a generous breakfast with freshly roasted coffee at the relaxed cafe. The hotel's rooftop terrace offers excellent views and a relaxing atmosphere. The Swiss hospitality, attention to detail, and dog-friendly policy make it a perfect home away from home for travelers looking for personal touches and warm ambiance.
Great accommodation, beautiful, clean, extremely comfortable, of very good taste. Most welcoming and nice staff. The location is perfect. Beautiful terrace on top. I also recommend the breakfast, with homemade bread. Thank you for having us!
Iulia S — Google review
We had a lovely stay! Despite having a bit of trouble finding the place, having to wend our way (with luggage) up the windy paths, we got directions from a local-- the old town is so small everyone knows where everyone lives. Beautiful room, amazingly quiet, the best bed of our whole trip. Also the best breakfast! Wonderful hosts.
Culprit — Google review
The hostal offers confortable rooms with nice rustic art decorations. Their breakfast is very tasty. Location is great, within the city center (no cars so no traffic and noise, but you will need to walk from nearest parking zone). The area is close to the beaches and within the historic center. There are stairs to reach the room and you can store a baby stroller at the reception. The hostal is owned by a Finnish-Spanish couple - they both and their staff are incredibly friendly and nice. Service was really great and our stay in Peniscola was amazing.
Brunella A — Google review
We didn’t stay here, but had breakfast here twice on our holiday. They are really welcoming, it has a great atmosphere, and the food is lovely. Do not miss it on your holiday! Oh and the coffee is divine!

Amazing service by Miia and Xavi!!! Super helpful and kind, go out of their way to help us or accommodate our needs. Great breakfast with homemade bread, good value for the stay, good coffee, and we simply just love chilling outside along the beautiful street.

We had a lovely 3 night stay in May. Excellent, small b&b, near the castle in Peñiscola, very good value. The owners were very friendly. The breakfasts were excellent, with alot of choice. And the bar opposite also owned by them, had a small but very good menu, and good drinks selection, lovely to sit outside in the evening in the picturesque street. Highly recommend.
Sally W — Google review
We had a fantastic stay at this little guesthouse in Peñiscola old town. Perfectly located with two perfect and hard working hosts. The rooms were perfect, comfortable and warm with a roof terrace with views over the rooftops and out to sea. We ate a wonderful breakfast inside and had a good dinner outside the night before. Thoughtful touches such as blankets to keep you warm outside are a nice touch. A fantastic place and we will return.
Adam D — Google review
Lovely little hotel near the top of the walled town. Wonderful friendly people, delicious breakfast in a magical setting. If you're driving in it's a bit of an adventure if you need to unload near the hotel - the drive up through the narrow streets was a little white knuckle but very memorable!

Hotel Boutique La Mar offers minimalist accommodations with stunning views of the castle or the sea. Situated in the heart of Peniscola, this adults-only hotel is steps away from Norte Beach and Portal fosc. Guests can enjoy a hip restaurant and bar, as well as a rooftop terrace with panoramic views. The hotel's modern decor, attentive staff, and tranquil atmosphere make it an ideal place to unwind.
FABULOUS boutique hotel right on the water and right next to castle. We were greeted by the lovely Ines at reception who made our early check in seamless. Hotel is super modern, super clean and staff is very helpful and thoughtful. And a rooftop patio to die for! We will definitely be coming back and I’ve told all my Canadian friends to put this hidden gem of a city and this hotel at the top of their list.
Deborah F — Google review
The walls between rooms are very thin, so we were exposed to all kinds of noise and even cigarette smells from neighboring rooms. One night, an alarm went off in the room next to us at 11 PM and continued for 35 minutes. We informed the reception, but unfortunately, no solution was offered. The air conditioning worked in the evening but stopped working in the morning. Also, the bathroom has a glass wall, so there is very little privacy.
Basak B — Google review
The room was spacious, clean and the receptionists were super nice! The breakfast includes sweet pastries and savoury for a very reasonable price. The location and the view is amazing. We will definitely come back!
Eden A — Google review
Really nice, bright, modern hotel with friendly staff who were very accommodating with our requests. The location is excellent, with stunning sea views from the terrace and some rooms. It is also right beside the castle area with tonnes of authentic bars and restaurants close by. Wouldn't hesitate to come back here.
Fergus K — Google review
They have a real good photographer, because the rooms look much bigger at the pictures then I real life. The bed is too small for a tall person. Rooms are new rebuild and look pretty. Clean and good quality. Earplugs are recommended for the morning when other guests are leaving the hotel. Area is very good. Many bars around and view is amazing.

Beautiful. Fantastic location with a view of the beach from our balcony. We happened to be there during the annual moorish christian festival, with bulls around the corner and a parade over two nights.

Located in the old school building immortalized by Spanish director Berlanga in his film Calabuig, Museu de la Mar is a maritime museum in Peniscola. It aims to preserve and showcase the town's maritime heritage. The museum offers a historical journey through fishing gear since medieval times, displaying utensils used for different fishing techniques and objects such as amphorae and ship models. Additionally, it features three aquariums with aquatic animals.
Although the museum is currently closed due to coronavirus, the area offers impressive views of the water and there is a replica cannon. It is spacious, so you can easily social distance. Our guide over the years has been Pablo, he is knowledgeable and provides ample history of the area.

The hotel features a restaurant, bar, outdoor pool with sea views, and a full-service spa offering massages and body treatments. Guests can also enjoy an indoor pool and sauna. The rooms are well-equipped with amenities including a minibar, flat-screen TV, and balcony with city views. Great hotel, great location, green food, great staff. We stayed for 6 days in a Junior Suite. Our balcony had a sea view, two sun loungers and a couple of chairs with a small table. We paid for underground parking I advance. With our room we had full board ~ the food was great at all times, with the option to sit in or outdoors. All the waiters/waitresses were friendly, especially Juan (I think that was his name). The roof top solarium offered plenty of loungers, umbrellas, an outdoor bar and a medium size pool. Great views here of Peniscola Castle. Unfortunately we did not experience the spa on site.

2nd time of coming to this hotel and it lived up to our previous visit. This time we had asuite again but we given the top suite on the fourth floor with a wonderful balcony. Superb views of the beach and castle. We stay on fullboard and very pleased with the buffet food selection each meal time. Parking underground is available for a fee and is pre-bookable. We always add this to our booking as we drive from England and need the car for our return journey! This visit had entertainment four nights out of seven. The resort of Peniscola is quiet at the end of May but does resemble a Spanish resort and not full of British tourists - yet!

Great hotel located close to beach and dining places. Modern. Our two rooms suite was large and functional Large bathroom had two sinks. Tub and shower. Great breakfast buffet. Only issue is housekeeping turns off a/c so our room was excessively hot and it took hours for the a/c to cool.

We always use the south beach, it is usually very calm, also shallow for the young toddlers. The nearby facilities include a wide range of eating establishments, and the working port is alongside, you see all the fishing boats return at 1530 to 1600 weekdays, fitness apparatus on the beach for those so minded.

Perched on a mountain peak overlooking the Mediterranean, Castillo del Papa Luna in Peniscola is a magnificent walled castle-fortress that attracts around 330,000 visitors annually. The well-maintained facilities offer numerous spaces to explore and provide abundant audiovisual information at every turn. Visitors are treated to breathtaking sea views and can even descend into the dungeon, a rare opportunity in castles worldwide. The ticket price includes access to the castle's weapons park located nearby.
Can buy the tickets with a credit card. It includes the castle and the garden which is below the castle. Lots of stairs and going up the hill. Lots of market stalls and resturants newr the castle. There is a free lookout area as well..

It's definitely a beautiful place. Impressively well-conserved. To be honest, the different expositions throughout the castle were a bit of a letdown. Nothing was original, the entire place was filled with bad replicas.

Interesting castle built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar, Peñíscola Castle became the summer residence of Pope Benedict XIII, known as Pope Luna. This pontiff lived in the castle during his exile in the 15th century and left an indelible mark on the city's history. The castle walls and towers offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Valencian coast, an unforgettable visual experience. A fortress that was the residence of Pope Luna in the 15th century, steeped in the history of the Knights Templar.

This village is so full of garage it’s truly sad. It’s like a Disney world here that’s gone rotten. I’ve been here many times and it just keeps going downhill. There is potential here but this castle and town need environmental change. Would not recommend at the moment. September 19th, 2025 22:40pm

Playa Norte, renowned for its breathtaking views, is the crown jewel among Peniscola's 16 stunning beaches. Stretching over 5 kilometers, this vibrant beach is flanked by a picturesque promenade that boasts an array of top-notch services and amenities to enhance your visit. For those in search of a more serene escape, nearby options like Playa Pebret, Playa Russo, Playa Sur, and Playa Viudas offer pristine natural settings perfect for relaxation and privacy.
(Translated by Google) Peñíscola's North Beach is, without a doubt, the quintessential postcard of this beautiful town in Castellón, and visiting it in September is a choice that borders on perfection. This month marks the end of the high season, offering visitors an experience that combines the best of summer and the tranquility of autumn. An Unforgettable Setting The main attraction of North Beach is its imposing backdrop: the majestic Papa Luna Castle. Almost 5 kilometers long and with fine, golden sand, the beach stretches in a clean, well-kept arc that culminates in the peninsula where the fortress sits. Advantages of Visiting in September September offers the ideal balance to fully enjoy this setting: Perfect Weather: Temperatures are still very pleasant, ideal for lying in the sun, but without the stifling heat of July and August. This is the month when the heat "begins to lessen as much," making it perfect for enjoying the whole day. Less Crowded: The influx of tourists decreases considerably after the school year ends. This translates into greater calm and tranquility. You'll have plenty of space to stroll, set up your umbrella, and enjoy the calm waters without being crowded. Warm Waters: The Mediterranean Sea remains an excellent temperature for swimming, as it has been warming up throughout the summer. You can still enjoy a dip without the cold weather that approaches later in the fall.

The Estàtua de Benet XIII (Papa Lluna) is a beautiful statue located near the illuminated castle, creating a picturesque setting. The statue of Benedict XIII, also known as Papa Luna, has become a popular spot for taking selfies. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk to the castle through the old town of Peniscola, navigating narrow and sometimes steep streets and stairs.
Inaugurated in 2007, this Bronze statue represents absolutely nothing of the actual physical appearance of Papa Luna: in reality, he was a small, extremely thin man dedicated to the world of academia, more along the lines of a Mr. Barnes from the Simpsons rather than the imposing myth that has been created. Some argument can be made that the statue represent his strong character and beliefs, but physically, zero in common with the statue.
Guyver I — Google review
The statue of Pope Benedict XIII, or Papa Luna, in Peñíscola stands as a reminder of one of the most controversial figures in papal history. Once a powerful leader during the Great Western Schism, Benedict XIII made Castell de Peníscola his refuge, refusing to renounce his claim to the papacy even in exile. His legacy is one of resilience and defiance, and this statue, overlooking the sea, captures his unwavering determination. Standing before it, you can almost feel the weight of history—the echoes of a time when the fate of the Church was as stormy as the Mediterranean waves behind him.

We found this place by accident and it was fascinating. There's a long gravel road leading all across the park where you can either enjoy the view of the clifs or you can take a swim. When I visited it was possible to reach this beach by car (after 7th September 2025) however we didn’t want to initially go to this beach but had to because the road was blocked for maintenance work, hence we could not even proceed by car nor foot. The beach itself is nothing special, water isn’t clear, snorkelling was not worth it, very few fishes and no clarity. We noted quite a few jellyfish in the water. Place was also invaded by mosquitos and wasps. We got even stung by one and had to leave as it was not possible to stay any longer in those conditions. Good thing there is a picnic area next to the parking lot, which you can use if you bring your own food!

I imagine that in July or August it will be crowded but if you expect to be alone, this is not your beach (at least in summer). Calm and clean waters. Visitors can also explore natural wonders such as La Petxina Spring and Font de Dins Spring.
Loved visiting the castle & garden here. This was the highlight of our one week trip in the area. A word of caution. There are a lot of steps and steep climbs. We spent about 2 + hours there. That allowed us time to read the English bit of info in each room, watch the odd short video clip and take our time enjoying the amazing views. We walked through the town when done. Places to eat in the town didn’t seem great and are over priced. I’d go somewhere else to eat. But obviously we didn’t try everywhere so…. The place we ate was way overpriced for average fast food style offerings. The blowhole brought us to this town. It was quiet and unremarkable. The castle was the jewel in the crown. Highly recommended.

Majestic entrance walking from the historic isthmus of Peñiscola, the Gibraltar of Valencia. Notice the coat of arms of Papa Luna in the center--during times of plague or siege the city would close off this entrance (unfortunately they didn't shut the door during Coronavirus :) The walk up begins here on an incline, be careful because it can be slippery.

(Translated by Google) This medieval castle is definitely worth a visit. You have fantastic views of both sea and land. It's also quite large. Only it was a drama to pay at the parking meter closest to the castle. The machine did not accept our visa card and we could only pay with coins. There was no paper money, so this person first had to go into town to change money while my husband stayed by the car... (Original) Dit middeleeuwse kasteel is zeer zeker een bezoek waard. This is also the entrance to the lighthouse and the famous castle, where Game of Thrones was filmed. There are many shops of all kinds, as well as restaurants serving lunch or dinner, although due to the location they are a bit more expensive than usual. In any case, if you want to take home a beautiful souvenir with one of the best views of the Mediterranean in the Valencian neighborhood, this is a must-visit and is the most visited entrance to the interior of the city walls. It has its own character and history, it was built in the 15th century by order of Pope Luna, its architecture is a large low ashlar arch, in the center the shield of Pope Luna can be seen, this building serves as the portal new sea lanes. It features Gothic style architecture with baroque extensions and dates back to the 13th century, built on the remains of an Arab mosque. The church offers free tours where visitors can learn about its history and see the relics kept there. The interior exudes a sense of lightness, unlike typical Spanish churches, making it a unique and worthwhile visit.

The tower is worth the visit, although you cannot enter it. We parked our car where the tarmac road ends, and it was still about 2,5km rough dirt road to the tower. We hoped for a pleasant hike, enjoying the coastline and the wonderful views. However, we were constantly harrassed by the cars of the people who simply drive up to the tower. A real dissappointment, I recommend that the path should be closed for motorized traffic.
