Blackbut Reserve is such an amazing place for nature and photography lovers. You can spot plenty of wildlife, from birds to wallabies, making photo hunting really exciting. The atmosphere is calm, green, and relaxing-perfect for a walk while carrying your camera. It's also a great place for families, a fun walk with friends, or just to enjoy a refreshing day outdoors. Truly a fun and memorable spot for everyone.
Vian A — Google review
I visited this place on a lovely afternoon and had an amazing experience. The parking was convenient and well-organized. Birds and different animals were freely around the area, which made it both exciting and enjoyable to watch. The pleasant sound of birds created a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. There were also great facilities for barbecue and seating, making it a perfect spot to spend time. The weather was wonderful, and everything together made it a truly memorable visit.
Rasoul B — Google review
Great bit of nature near to town with bus links. Good experience for kids to see some amazing animals up close and get into nature. Some really nice mid distance walks as well if that's what you're after.
Tom F — Google review
I spent a lovely morning at the Blackbutt Nature Reserve and it was great! We saw wallabies, one koala, emus and much more. The park in itself is really nice and very well organized. It’s perfect for families with kids ! We finished our morning having lunch at the park, as there are many pic nic tables. The reserve is free but the parking lot is around 6$ by hour. We had a coffee and a matcha at the cafe there and it was not really good … we also waited a lot.
Elena B — Google review
Great bush walking opportunities at this reserve plus children's adventure playgrounds, BBQ and picnic tables, many native Australian animals to see plus a new Cafe to relax and enjoy brunch or a take away toastie and coffee or cake. The residential peacock's and bush turkeys roam wild.
Tina K — Google review
Nice park with relaxing area with a playground near the cafe. Many beautiful birds and a paved pathway to see various animals. We saw birds, kangaroos, emus, reptiles and a koala. It was busy but festive on the weekend we went. Overall a great place to visit.
BLS — Google review
Great for a family day out or a place to hang with friends. There are plenty of spots to sit and have a picnic, including picnic tables. Kids area is great. Cafe has a good selection - all sorts of flavoured croissants, biscuits and cakes, as well as a full menu of breakfast and lunch food. I had a Nutella cookie and it was extremely good! The main nature walk includes koalas, wallabys, lizards, frogs, and birds of all sorts. The emu and kangaroo area is always good to walk around. There are plenty of walking tracks through the reserve. Entry is free, but parking is not. Not really any public transport options, and the road outside the reserve is pretty dangerous to try to cross and theres minimal space to walk on that side of the road. Very much not walkable to there if you live nearby.

Fort Scratchley, a 19th-century fortress located on Flagstaff Hill in Newcastle's east end, is a significant historical site with military history exhibits and tunnel tours. Built in 1882 as part of Australia's defense against potential Russian attacks, the fort saw action during World War II when it returned fire from Japanese submarines in the 'the shelling of Newcastle.'
Was an awesome visit. All the exhibits, the views, tunnel tour, and the 1pm firing g of the cannon.. we enjoyed talking with Bob, and Norm was lovely, Norm's sense of humour and stories were brilliant.
Mark A — Google review
Absolutely wonderful tunnel tour for $15 per adult. The historical society volunteer guides are great and explaining everything and happy to answer any questions. They’ve done a wonderful job at keeping the fort open to the public and restoring a huge piece of local history. Amazing views from the top with plenty of ocean life to watch. Would highly recommend.
L. K — Google review
Such a wonderful place to visit!! Would highly recommend going there. We had a great day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Thank you 🙏
Claire A — Google review
Loved the fort, it was awesome to see a real piece of history and how our land was protected. It's free to walk around but need to pay for the tunnels, which are pretty cool as well. If you go before 1:00pm make sure you stick around as there is the one o'clock gun that goes off.
Jesse A — Google review
Stunning views and interesting and insiteful opportunity to learn about the history of Newcastle. Free entry and parking. Great place to take children.
Nicole S — Google review
Great place, very well taken cared and shown by a very enthusiastic staff of volunters, witnessed the 13:00p cannon shot followed by a guided visit to the tunnels, that's really the part you have to pay for,the fortress itself is free, but if you ask me it's absolutely worth every cent.
Ivan M — Google review
Admission is free, and the staff at the front gate are very friendly, welcoming us and providing some additional information. The panoramic view from the top is truly awesome, and I highly recommend a visit when you are in Newcastle.

Newcastle Museum is a family-friendly attraction housed in historic railway workshop buildings, offering interactive exhibits that showcase the area's industrial and natural history. The museum features engaging displays such as Supernova and Mininova exhibitions designed to captivate visitors of all ages, including a soft-play area for preschoolers and hands-on activities for older children.
A must visit, especially for kids. The light and sound show was very interesting. The Science section is super fun.
Neha K — Google review
Newcastle Museum closed on Mondays and opening on Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 5pm The are three main exhibition halls displaying different themes of historical life. Such as mining, garments, immigration generations and etc. Parking at the Paid open carpark then walking 2 minutes to it. I have a good overall time there with my family and I would like to recommend it for tourists travelling from other cities to Newcastle in Australia.
Richard C — Google review
Kids had a ball after complaining when I suggested they take a look (I had to bribe them with icecream to visit). The sciece area was a hit and the steel pouring assimilation was cool! Very enjoyable and free!
Casey L — Google review
Great museum and friendly stuff. I enjoyed the science section as well as the metallurgy and coal section. The metallurgy section had a really cool demonstration of the smelting that was done in Newcastle. It's a fantastic demonstration with lights and smoke machine 🙂. Way better than expected.
Frank J — Google review
Excellent. Not large, but they do a lot with a small space! Definitely pay for the model exhibition, that was wonderful.
Nikki A — Google review
Great museum with free entry to visit and explore, definitely worth visiting. Staffs are friendly and helpful too.
Annie C — Google review
Love the Model T, and the steelworks history. The science section was also fun. They have a good display of the German influence on the Hunter as well.
Peter B — Google review
The museum here entry was very cheap. By cheap I mean free 😋 when you think free you’re gonna think it’s like ehhhh but this place was honestly a fantastic day trip. I had fun :D BONUS: I got to sit on the train. Chooo choooooo 🚂

Located on the coastline, Bogey Hole is a stunning ocean rock pool that was hand-carved by convicts in 1819. It's an iconic attraction in Newcastle and offers a unique swimming experience. The area around Bogey Hole also features King Edward Park, which boasts Norfolk Island pines, a sunken garden, historical building remains, and breathtaking ocean views.
So much fun, definitely can be dangerous and you need to be careful. Probably best not to attempt when the tide is high. But good managed risky fun for sure. We loved it
T N — Google review
Wonderful views of a nice ocean pool rich in history. Would be nice if there was some signage to explain the history. Very steep stairs and platform for access to the water. Gets plenty of flushing from the ocean as any waves splash into it. Great for viewing sunset and whales/dolphins and seals at.
L. K — Google review
Beautiful place to visit in the evening. The breeze and beach view is amazing. If you are swimmer, this is the place for you to take a dip and enjoy running sea water. And you can wave at skydiving people as well.
Kasuni S — Google review
A nice surprise at the end of the memorial walk. A green rock pool with rough waves pounding its side mercilessly. I saw groups of people descending to the pool swimming and snorkeling. Even some dogs enjoyed a bit of water actions.
Nick Q — Google review
Fantastic place for a swim or a relaxing afternoon lazing on the rocks. Not alot of places to stash you stuff. Water is cold, but enjoyable on a warm day. Bit of a walk from the roadway, but nothing to strenuous. Avoid cutting through the gardens as it leads to some high terraces to get down.
Justan K — Google review
Absolutely awesome place! Waves crush in and the pool practically replenishes itself. Love it
Callmedani — Google review
Amazing spot to swim! We also got to see the dolphins 😍
Elena B — Google review
Very pretty! Lovely to go when it warm and you want to enjoy the ocean without all the sand! Clear water. The steps may pose an issue to some with less mobility, but other than that very good! Be careful when putting your clothes on the ground, put them higher so the waves don't wet them.

The Newcastle Memorial Walk is a breathtaking 450-meter clifftop pathway that not only offers stunning views of the ocean and cityscape but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to those who served in World War I. Stretching from Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach, this walkway features impressive steel silhouettes of soldiers, inscribed with nearly 4,000 names of local heroes.
The Newcastle Memorial Walk is one of the most beautiful and meaningful places I’ve visited. Set along the coastline, it offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean, cliffs, and surrounding city - especially during sunrise or sunset. The walkway itself is well-maintained and not too long, making it an easy and enjoyable walk for people of all ages. What makes it truly special is its tribute to the ANZAC soldiers and the region’s history. Along the walk, there are steel silhouettes of soldiers and the names of thousands of local men and women who served in World War I. It’s both moving and respectful, adding a deeper sense of purpose to what could otherwise be just a scenic stroll. The walk also connects with the Bathers Way, so it’s a great part of a longer coastal walk if you want to explore more. Whether you’re there for the views, the history, or just a quiet moment to reflect, it’s worth the visit. It’s a place where natural beauty and history come together perfectly. If you’re in Newcastle, I’d highly recommend taking some time to experience the Memorial Walk, it really leaves a lasting impression.
Subas S — Google review
The walking trail from **Merewether Beach** to **King Edward Park Lookout** is about 6 km return. I enjoyed a wonderful 1.5-hour walk on a delightful afternoon. The weather was perfect, the beach was absolutely stunning, and the sunset created a magical atmosphere. Along the way, I saw many people walking, exercising, and enjoying their time, which made the whole experience even more lively and enjoyable.

The Newcastle Memorial Walk presents a stunning 450-meter coastal pathway, providing exceptional vistas of Newcastle's coastline and cityscape. It features captivating scenic views of the ocean and offers picturesque sunset views, making it a popular destination for travel enthusiasts and nature lovers. This location is approximately ~190 kilometers from Sydney / Parramatta 🤩🌊🌅
Lavan K — Google review
Beautiful coastal walk with stunning ocean views and a touching tribute to ANZACs. Easy to access, peaceful, and perfect for a morning stroll or sunset visit. A must-do in Newcastle!
Anjaly S — Google review
Beautiful, brisk wintery walk. Quite windy—consider yourself warned! Don’t wear your favorite hat unless you’re sure it’s going to stay put. A lovely walk with even lovelier views!
Sarah S — Google review
Nice short walk that gives you a great views of the ocean and city. You also get to know more about the history of ANZAC during WW1. I recommend going here to view the sunset.
Rejean B — Google review
Great coastal walk along some of Newcastle's best beaches like Bar Beach, Merewether Beach. You can walk all the way to Newcastle and spot a hang glider or 2.
Michelle C — Google review
Wonderful coastline walk with well documented military history along the way. Plenty of parking at either end. Dogs not permitted but they are permitted along the existing footpath which follows the walk on the street. Lots of stairs and hill down to Bar beach. Would recommend.

Nobbys Beach is a picturesque, curved beach located near a hilltop lighthouse in Newcastle. It offers picnic areas with BBQ grills and beautiful ocean baths for year-round enjoyment. The Newcastle Coastal Geotrail along Bathers Way from Nobbys Beach to Merewether headland provides insight into the area's geology and cultural heritage, dating back over 250 million years.
Such a relaxing place to spend your time beside the beach and enjoy sea activities. There is also a beautiful walkway around for a nice walk or jogging. The beach car park has plenty of unlimited free parking spaces. More importantly there is also a washroom and cafe for your needs.
Salim S — Google review
Loved walking on the beach! Very clean, and they have beach volleyball set up, which is cool. ♡ such pretty views and loved seeing the ships 🚢 pass by.
Luma L — Google review
Located almost next to the Newcastle beach (approximately 2 km), this is also a beautiful beach to enjoy. We visited this place during our road trip from QLD to Melbourne. The weather was pleasant and the beach wasn't busy during that time.
Malay A — Google review
Nobbys Beach is one of my favorite places in Newcastle. The walkway is beautiful on both sides, with stunning ocean views, and at the end, you can often spot two or more sea lions, making it a perfect place to capture special moments.
Rabeen R — Google review
Nobbys Beach is the perfect spot to start the day. Watching the sunrise here is absolutely breathtaking — the colours over the water are stunning and worth the early wake-up. It’s also great for people-watching, with a mix of surfers, joggers, and families soaking up the morning vibe. Walking the break wall is a highlight too; it’s the ideal way to get your steps in while enjoying the fresh sea breeze and panoramic views. Whether you’re after a peaceful moment, some light exercise, or just a scenic spot to take it all in, Nobbys Beach never disappoints.

Worth the walk to the end of the break wall. Rock art and interesting plaques along the way. We were lucky enough to be accompanied by a large pod of dolphins heading out to sea amongst the coal tankers.

Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia is a remarkable wetland reserve that offers a variety of recreational activities and abundant native wildlife. As Australia's longest-running community-owned wetlands centre, it has been dedicated to conservation, education, and eco-tourism for over 33 years. Families and bird enthusiasts can enjoy activities like dip netting, walking, riding, canoeing, magpie geese feeding, and reptile talks. The center also provides additional kids' activities during school holidays.
Beautiful ponds and so many different birds! They also had baby black swans when we went there! It’s a great place to go to relax and get away from a busy environment, or to take the kids. Plus all profits go toward the nature reserve. Definitely recommend!
Merlyn C — Google review
It's something I've want to do for a long time and really enjoyed it. It's a great walk around the grounds. The ponds and waterways are really peaceful. The native flora and fauna is pretty, and interesting. Don't forget the Aeroguard (they have some available on site) ... the mozzies are bad!
Marasaz — Google review
Lovely series of ponds and swamp areas with lots of bird life. Great little cafe attached that closes at 2pm. Relatively easy walking tracks to get around them all. You can do a short walk around the closest couple of ponds or spend an hour or so to do the long walk.
Louisa F — Google review
It charges admission $20 for family. That said, the place is big and beautiful. Staff is very friendly. There is a cafe but closed due to C19. Lots of tracks to explore. There is a children play area and a towerm Lots of tables.and chairs. There isn't a lot of cover area so be prepared in rainy days. All tracks have no steps and no steep hills. Children are given with treasure maps to keep them excited and busy.
Dominic T — Google review
Great day out for the kids with ks of paths and bike riding tracks. Plenty of stuff to do with the whole family so make sure you spare a few hours. The Cafe is no longer open which is a little disappointing.
Seth A — Google review
Friendly greeting as you walk in. $5 for pensioner and free maps. Coffee shop and light snacks, cakes available. First off, walk up to a closed shed upon entering, a section of frogs, lizards, snakes in fish tanks with descriptions of enclosed reptile. A short walk to a table setting to enjoy the coffee I had bought with me. The toilet here was extremely clean, large and had a nappy change as well, however apart from the info centre was the only toliet I found on my walk. A nice walk around the fenceline perimeter...lacking signage in some parts and toilets would have been helpful near the 'boat shed'. Viewing platforms here and there over a muddy creek and it appears you can hire canoes here. Grounds well maintained. At a certain point you can pass through a gate and enter rainforest sections and also nice shady boardwalk. Lots of birdlife in the ponds. Paths here and there off the main track, so didn't investigate them all. Coffee shop busy on my way out and looks like groups come in for a tour, etc. Gravel car park almost full. Short drive out from Newcastle and I would imagine a nice picnic day out for young families.
Meg E — Google review
Great place to visit and haven't light meal after walking around the beautiful Wetlands eith many birds to be seen. We stopped there after leaving Camden on our way to Urunga.

They were very alert as they were expecting some current on a certain area!! ( the waves)The toilets were clean, tidy & kept quite alright. Many Thanks for that!! There were 2 cafes/Restaurant where you could purchase food!! We took our own food & there were decent amount of benches & chairs for us to enjoy our own food too!!This was such a lovely beach & the rescue team was very friendly!! We caught the train from Sydney, got down from New Castle & got into the light Rail !! It was so comfortable . We have to walk a very short distance from the light rail. We had a lovely day👍🏾❤️🙂🙋‍♀️ Thanks for everything!!

Newcastle Art Gallery is a venerable gallery with numerous exhibits, a sculpture garden, and a gift shop. The gallery is currently undergoing expansion to feature an additional 1,600 square meters of exhibition space. It offers a massive collection of art donated by Roland Pope, representing major eras in Australian art from colonial times to the present day. Additionally, it hosts family-friendly activities such as children's art trails and interactive displays in Smart Space.
Very nice Art Gallery . It was cool to see the kids being engaged and hands on on the first floor The exhibitions were well laid out , plenty of seating. The WarWar exhibition was great. Don’t take pics though ( allowed down stairs) Toilets are good, and there’s a little sculpture yard near the toilets

Great place for art. They change exhibits time to time. When I went there, there was a great collection of magic Mike's art. Tip: Never go on school holidays. It's filled with children. If you have kids plz go they got lot of activities for kids during school holidays. 😊

Building is cool, people are nice. Sadly, all they have at the moment is the predictable and boring genufluction to aboriginal art, which is dull. Oh well, it should get better when the whole building is open for business.

Amazing place! Usually clean! Parking at the water can be limited but if you're willing to walk for few minutes you'll always find somewhere! The stairs down are very steep so hang on to the rail! A must-go every summer!

Super public bath
Newcastle Ocean Baths is a historic outdoor ocean swimming pool with an art deco pavilion, situated on a promenade overlooking the beach. The baths were built before World War One but officially opened in the 1920s. Its iconic Art Deco pavilion makes it a popular spot for amateur photographers and is considered one of the city's greatest historic landmarks.
I recently visited the Newcastle Ocean Baths, and it was an amazing experience! The historic baths are a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy the ocean views and refreshing seawater pools. *Highlights:* - *Iconic Art Deco Pavilion:* The baths feature a stunning Art Deco pavilion that's perfect for photography and adds to the overall charm of the place. - *Spacious Pools:* The baths have multiple pools, including a large one for swimming laps and a smaller one for kids, making it an ideal spot for families. - *Beautiful Views:* The ocean views from the baths are breathtaking, with waves crashing against the shore and sometimes even splashing into the pools. - *Clean Facilities:* The change rooms and toilets are generally clean, although some visitors have noted that they could be improved. *Tips:* - *Visit during weekdays* to avoid crowds and make the most of your visit. - *Keep an eye on children* when near the pool edges, especially during rough wave conditions. - *Parking can be limited*, so consider parking in surrounding areas or arriving early to secure a spot. *Overall Experience:* The Newcastle Ocean Baths are a great spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy the ocean and get some exercise. The seawater pools are refreshing, and the views are stunning. While there are some minor issues with the facilities, the overall experience is well worth it.

We managed to fill 2 full days exploring the rock pools and enjoying the pools. Bring your own food and drinks and shade. Plan toileting, with children as its well away from the ocean pool into the actual baths and that's if their open. They wernt on our first day but we're on the second day. It's undergoing reno's to the actual baths. Parking can be an issue if you're not there early so pack light or bring a trolly. We had a fantastic time mainly in the ocean Pool and rocketing. Recommend it as a must do.
Jungle C — Google review
The ocean bath has a clean pool and a spacious rockpool next to it. There is a large changing room with showers and toilets. Parking right in front of the bath is limited, but you'll be able to park free of charge in the surroundings. Keep an eye on small children when walking around the edge of the pool when the waves are strong. They then crash into the pool.

The most idealistic spot to start your day if you’re ever in Newcastle. Perfect for an early morning swim while watching the sunrise, or simply to take in the beauty of a calm morning. The Kiosk coffee cart is usually open from 6am during the warmer months, from November through April. The coffee is always amazing 🙏

Nobbys Lighthouse, a historic beacon established in 1858, stands proudly at the entrance of Newcastle Harbour. This stunning landmark not only offers breathtaking views of the coastline and bustling harbor but also serves as a popular destination for both locals and visitors alike. The adjacent breakwall is perfect for capturing dramatic seascapes and picturesque sunrises that will leave you in awe. Recently reopened to the public on weekends, Nobbys Lighthouse invites exploration right in the heart of Newcastle.
Nobbys Lighthouse is such a peaceful and beautiful spot, sitting proudly at the edge where the land meets the sea. It feels like it’s been watching over Newcastle for ages, standing strong and calm no matter the weather. The walk up to the lighthouse is just as lovely — the ocean on one side, the city behind you, and the sea breeze gently brushing past as you walk along the breakwall. The beach nearby is wide and golden, with waves that roll in so softly it’s almost like they’re inviting you to stay a little longer. The view from the top is breathtaking — sky and sea blending together in endless shades of blue. It’s a place where you can sit in silence, watch the horizon, and feel completely at peace. Nobbys Lighthouse and the surrounding beach make Newcastle feel like a coastal postcard — simple, stunning, and full of charm. A perfect place to slow down, take a deep breath, and just enjoy the moment.

Nobbys Lighthouse in Newcastle is a historic coastal landmark that offers stunning views of the ocean and harbour. Located on Nobbys Head, the lighthouse has been guiding ships since the 1800s and remains an iconic part of the city’s coastline. The walk to the lighthouse along the breakwall is peaceful and scenic, especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset. It’s an easy and relaxing stroll, with waves crashing on either side and seabirds flying overhead. On weekends and public holidays, visitors can walk up to the lighthouse itself, where you’ll find a small gallery and friendly volunteers ready to share its history. It’s a perfect spot for a quiet escape, photography, or simply soaking in the sea breeze and views.

The weather was perfect, and the beach had such a peaceful and relaxing vibe. The stunning views and the beautiful sunset made the experience unforgettable. Locate right next to the nobby's beach. The lighthouse offers an amazing view of the coastal life of Newcastle. It has an arts and exhibition centre, which is opened only on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 4 PM, there is a sitting bench that shows you where the flash of light goes out from the lighthouse. These 2 buildings, one shows where it used to flush in the old days and once or more automated system. Sorting the current modern technologies

King Edward Park in Newcastle is a must-visit destination for photography enthusiasts, especially during sunset. Perched on a coastal hill, the park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and features lush greenery, meandering pathways, and historic landmarks like the Bogey Hole and Victorian rotunda. Established in 1863, this iconic park seamlessly blends natural beauty with historical charm, making it an ideal spot for capturing wedding photos or simply immersing oneself in serene nature shots or architectural details.
Fantastic, although the place was rented out at 4 pm for a wedding which did not have any previous signs and ruined a perfect afternoon for all the public that was there..

One of Newcastle’s best picnic areas and park. Beautiful flat picnic area with luscious grass for the kids to play on. Old fashioned rotunda if you want some shade as well of plenty of tables and seats around the edges under the trees. Right next door are the beautiful gardens and some of the best views to the harbor.

A very nice park with breathtaking views. There is plenty of parking as well. It's pretty close to the bogey hope as well so you park here and then walk down to the hidden gem. There is a lookout spot here as well which offers a great view of the horizon as well as the Newcastle beach towards the left. A spot on place for a nice walk and a swim as well if you wanna go down the bogey hole.
Zeeshan S — Google review
This is a little piece of paradise right in the heart of Newcastle. The Rotunda behind me is quite often the news for marriages, and the park in general is beautifully kept by the council. In the old days they used to have the Mattara Hill climb, a car race from South Newcastle all the way through the park. These days it’s reserved for walking only, but you can drive and park your car on the road that twists through the park. Sometimes concerts are held here or outdoor cinema. It’s a great place for a picnic or just to hang out.

Christ Church Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of Christ the King, is a remarkable Gothic Revival church located in The Hill suburb. This nearly 200-year-old cathedral stands at 72.5 meters long and 36.5 meters high, dominating Newcastle's skyline and offering stunning views from various parts of the city. While it holds daily services and features a memorial garden, its historical significance extends beyond religious purposes.
Absolutely Highlight !! We spent one full day in Newcastle and we are so glad that we received the recommendation from a really friendly guy at the cafe "neighbours"!!! 🥰 Thank you to the women from the church to invite us to have a look in the tower upstairs 😍 sooo beautiful view above the city! Thank you! You all made our day really special. I highly recommend this place. You didn't have to book a ticket in advance, but please donate something when you leave this place

It is located right at the top of one of Newcastle's hills.  Such a beautiful building with fantastic views of the city. It was build on the grounds of the 1816 public school where 17 convict children were taught. The church is amazing inside and you can purchased a ticket to climb to the tower. It is the only church I have visited with has personalised knee cushions made by a local group of ladies. Outside there is an area dedicated to Newcastle War widows and  the cathedral park is the burial ground of Newcastle convict settlement beginning in 1804. Each step leading you to the top of the hill is dedicated to a dead person belonging to this old settlement.

I had a fish burger which was just what I needed and a nice coffee. Love the local hotel across the road which consists of a few chairs under a tree:-). This is a really beautiful location, peaceful and very friendly people. The ladies in the shop told me about a sculptor down the road and I paid him a visit before we left. What a lovely little interlude.

Beautiful and peaceful park. I prayed the Eid Jamaat here at Foreshore Park, Newcastle — it was a great experience. The park is clean, well-maintained, and spacious, with plenty of open green areas for events and gatherings. A great spot for picnics, walks, or just relaxing by the water. Highly recommended!

Located 30 minutes inland from Newcastle, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens cover over 140 hectares of natural bushland and gardens. The site offers walking trails, picnic areas, a visitor center, and a café. Families can enjoy various programs for kids such as cupcake decorating, garden explorer tours, lego weekends, stretching classes for beginners bonsai and kids succulent workshops. The gardens also feature a plant shop and a little wedding chapel.
I've driven past these gardens a lot and always thought one day I'll visit. I just wish we stopped when the kids were smaller. It is so special. Lots of walking tracks, play areas, seats to rest and a fabulous cafe all run by volunteers. Bought a bunch of plants to bring a little nature home with me. Thoroughly recommend stopping. It's only a $5 entry fee. I'll ensure to return for all the events they also host. Please stop next time to stretch your legs on the drive north or south. You won't be disappointed.

Beautiful gardens and bush walks close to Newcastle and Maitland. Friendly volunteers, heaps of great places to sit and picnic or explore. Full of birds and wallabies. They also have a great selection of plants grown from in the gardens to purchase. There’s great play equipment for kids and bbq stations.

Always a great outing. The ladies that volunteer are friendly and accommodating. Nice walk around the gardens and their scones are divine (made by one of the volunteers). Also recommend lunch. They have vegetarian options as well and incredibly good prices

Wonderful staff coffee and food was great. The walks were beautiful, it felt great to disconnect for a while and just enjoy. I need to come back when the orchids are in bloom. If you want to participate in the guided walks best to plan ahead and purchase tickets early. It’s amazing how it’s all ran by volunteers. I could have easily spent longer here.

Beautiful garden nestled in the Newcastle region. Ran by lovely volunteers who are really helpful and welcoming. There's a lot to explore here and we found the aboriginal gardens to be really informative. Looking forward to returning.

I really enjoyed my trip to these botanical gardens. It was larger than I expected and well kept. The succulent garden in particular was my favourite, and there is lots of walking trails to explore too. I also stumbled upon the sculptures and this was really cool! I spent longer than I expected to in here. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it was so quiet! I only saw 2 other people on my walk, very peaceful and benches to sit everywhere. Staff were lovely. Worth the 5 bucks!

We visited the gardens on our way back to Sydney. As a place that I always pass but never enter I can now say I regret that. This is a great place to brake up the trip in those long drives. As it was just short stay for us I can't wait to go back to look at the entire gardens. There is so much to look at as well as fun play ativities for the kids.

With a focus on showcasing both national and international artists alongside local talent from the Hunter region, MAC features an eclectic mix of paintings, photography, ceramics, sculptures, and installations.
The staff were very friendly and informative we enjoyed the exhibits that were on display at the time. We enjoyed a meal and coffee at the Cafe and afterwards we had a wander through the gardens looking at the sculptures on display.

0/10. Despicable customer service. When we entered the owner was arguing at full volume with an 80 year old woman about whether she actually ordered a biscuit or not. We ordered a soy latte and received a dairy milk latte. Ordered two sandwiches and received one. Sandwich had ingredients not listed on the sign. Exceptionally rude customer service who clearly doesn't listen. The so-called saviour of coffee is more like the beacon of bad hospitality. Guessing he owes that lady a biscuit.

The Fernleigh Track is a versatile 15-kilometer trail that follows the path of an old rail line, offering a range of activities such as walking, cycling, and nature viewing. Once used for transporting coal, this track now serves as a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts. The pathway features informative signage detailing the history of the railway and passes through scenic landscapes including forests, sand dunes, and wetlands.
If you are looking for something to do, then this is a great find. Plenty to see and experience along the way. It is a great shared path with a wide mixture, from people strolling to advanced cyclists, everyone was considerate, polite, and well mannered. Was wonderful walking along listening to the native wildlife, makes the time just fly by.

Starting the Fernleigh Track at Belmont we walked all the way to Adamstown Station (15ks) in total. Relaxing walk with beautiful scenery along the way. The tunnel was a pleasant surprise at the end. As this is a shared path with cyclists I will say the cyclists were courteous and rang their bells.

Great easy ride with minimal hills. We found the track easier to do from belmont and head towards adamstown as the gradient is more downhill on the return trip from adamstown back to belmont. Ride past old train stations and through beautiful forests. There are a couple of water stations along the way to have a drink. There is a few cafes just off the track as well. Was nice to head through the old tunnel as well. Lived in the area for years and never knew how good this track was. Highly recommend this.

Glenrock Lagoon, located within the Glenrock State Conservation Area near Newcastle, is a coastal paradise offering a variety of activities. The Yuelarbah Track winds through streets and bushland to reach the lagoon at Burwood Beach, where well-constructed bridges cross creeks. This 500-hectare area between Dudley and Merewether provides opportunities for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and swimming. The Yuelarbah Walk is a popular 4.
Nice hidden gem. The parking is far and you need to walk a fair bit to reach the lagoon. There was a sign the water may be contaminated and swimming not advised in the lagoon. But the beach and the views are mindblowing. It also said dogs not allowed but I found a few people with dogs in the area.
Rohit R — Google review
It is a very long walk to the lagoon if you're parked at the gun club road. We could see the lagoon from far away, but we couldn't take the trail down, it was closed . Instead we walked to the little flaggy creek falls, which was very nice.

The kids had a tonne of fun. We did the junior courses. Each of the 4 junior courses have several obstacles and end in a zipline. Watching the kids' confidence increase with each course was amazing. Both kids want to come again soon.

Highly recommend for all ages. There is a variety of different courses depending on age, experience and fitness level. As 4 adults in their late 20's this was a fantastic day with lots of laughs and peer encouragement. The high zip lines are so much fun and the feeling of achievement when you finish a harder courses is worth the slight inkling of fear. There is a shop for food and water, the instructor staff are very helpful and friendly.
Cinnamon T — Google review
Treetops at Minmi is great. Our kids were old enough to go up to the 8+ and 10+ levels and they really enjoyed the new challenges. The staff are very helpful and patient with all ages of kids. Strong winds will close some of the bigger courses so check ahead. Would recommend booking ahead as it can get busy in holiday periods and weekends.
Richard M — Google review
This is an incredibly fun place to spend a few hours! With three different levels, there's something for everyone. The first level is great for beginners, while the hardest course should only be attempted if you have a lot of energy and are up for a challenge. Trust me.. it lives up to its reputation and is really hard, but also incredibly rewarding if you enjoy fitness activities. Because this place is so popular, it's important to book ahead of time to secure your spot. But don't let that deter you – it's definitely worth it! Overall, this is an extremely enjoyable experience for anyone looking for a fun and challenging way to stay active.

Great courses, we went during the week and were one of two groups at the time. So we had no wait times. I felt so unfit though, but had a great time. I decided to hide from the Autumn Newcastle rain here on a Sunday night. Didn't regret it. The dark ceiling & high roof & chunky wooden interior cheered me up. As did the friendly football watching crowd. The 'Grain' burger & fries were also top notch. To top it off was the big & interesting collection of boutique beers & ciders.

Great location in Newcastle, walking distance from ferry. Staff very friendly. We ordered the wraps which came with chips. Loved the chips, hubby loved his brisket wrap, but my lamb wrap was very salty. A bit expensive for a wrap and chips. We did love the atmosphere and decor.

The wagyu steak was cooked to perfection and my son absolutely demolished his cheeseburger. I recommend the beer tasting paddle $17 for 5 beers tasters and you get to choose which beer you’d like. Definitely will be back. Make sure you make a booking if you go during peak times!

There are lots of board games to play as well. The food menu is quite impressive for a pub. Love everything about this pub and one of the best thing is it's super close to the Newcastle Light Rail line as well. We booked an Uber and it was only 2 minute wait. Nestled just a short 20-minute drive north of Newcastle, Fighter World is an aviation museum that promises an unforgettable experience for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. This not-for-profit organization serves as the RAAF Williamtown Aviation Heritage Centre, showcasing a remarkable collection of aircraft spanning several decades. Visitors can explore two expansive hangars filled with iconic planes like the Mirage III, Avon Sabre, Gloster Meteor, and Australia’s first Vampire jet. The highlight? Kids (and adults!
Fighter world has done a fantastic job on displaying  Australia’s aircraft history.  There were a large variety of aircraft on display along with ammunition, weapons, and jet  engines. I loved that it was family friendly and gave you the chance to sit in the cockpit, giving an appreciation of the jet fighter. The Friendly Guides were a great source of information. They were very passionate on what they were talking about and looking at. They certainly did make our visit enjoyable. The outdoor viewing platform overlooking the RAAF Base gave us the audio from the air traffic control while we could hear and see the planes taking off and landing.  The noise and speed of the aircraft were unreal There is also a cafe next to the hanger with outdoor seating, so you don't miss the action. Parking is plenty and free. Toilets facilities were clean. I would recommend visiting and spending a few hours wandering around looking and reading the history of these great giants of the sky.

Located at 49 Medowie Road, Williamtown, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺. This is a great place to come to. The display of the fighter jets is quite vast and the history of Australian fighter jets is amazing. You also get to see the ammunition, the weapons, the engines and so much more. Very well set out and easy to follow. If you are lucky enough, while enjoying a wonderful drink or meal at the attached “My Three Beans” Cafe, you might get to see some jets taking off or landing. The noise is so loud but well worth seeing. It’s amazing to experience. Admission to the museum is $20 adults, $11 children (under 5 years free) and senior/pensioner $16. I thought this very reasonable considering everything you get to see. There are toilets available, including disabled) around the back of the building. There’s plenty of parking 🅿️ and it’s free 🆓. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend visiting here. Thumbs up!!! 👍👍👍

Very informative displays and I even got to chat to a former F111 pilot!! … The best part is the second storey platform at the rear where you can see - up close - F35 fighter taking off and land. On Tuesday at around 12:55 pm, I bought tickets online a week in advance. Walk-ins were also fine. If I had to be honest, we thought the museum was small, but it was actually quite large! There were massive jets, and we even got to sit in one! The staff was lovely and very informative. We weren’t busy until about 1:30 pm. We really loved seeing the showcased jets. Then, we saw massive jets taking off! We didn’t know of any jets as it was our first time thinking it was just a museum, but not realising it was outside Williamtown RAAF. There weren’t just one, but two jets, and then a heap of different planes going! This experience was amazing, and I honestly fell in love with jets. Seeing and hearing how loud they were was crazy! They had bathrooms and an outer deck to see the jets taking off. Honestly, it was an 11/10 experience. I would definitely go again!
Anita L — Google review
Highly recommend a trip to Fighter World. We had some time between our arriving flight and hotel check in and it was worth the stop! Whole family (kids 13, 11, 9 and 8) thoroughly enjoyed, as did the adults. - Can not thank Steve enough for taking us around and giving us a real understanding of what we were viewing, even explaining things to the kids and answering any questions. - This can be a self guided experience with plenty of information provided on signs, however I strongly encourage you to talk to the gentlemen on the floor. They have first hand experience and are so full of knowledge and passion. - We managed to time it well enough to see some jets taking off and landing which was a great (noisy) experience! - We stopped for lunch at the Cafe which has heaps of variety, was all reasonably priced and was tasty. Overall a great way to spend a few hours especially on a rainy day, we did not prebook and there was no wait.

Clearly this centre no longer has any management. The neglect of this centre resembles the same neglect to the rest of Newcastle from its city council. Graffiti, overgrown grass and weeds all over this centre. It’s clear they have given up. Tags have been on a Marketown signage for weeks now. 21st August 25 6.10pm, late night shopping, not my local wollies but couldn't get fresh chicken fillets or ham as it was all packed up. Two young guys were still packing up what ham was there i asked if I could get some chicken and ham and was told sorry we are packed up for the night.... Seriously 6.10pm of a Thursday night and the shop closes at 10pm what a joke, if you think the Delli and fresh chicken is open at that time think again. Disappointed and the attitude of the young guy was appalling.

I went into the Woolworths part of this centre, it's an unusual space, quite compact in its footprint, with Big W, a Montessori kindy, and a few speciality shops on the second floor. Extremely disappointed. By far the worst gelato / ice cream we've ever had. Apparently, making things with fresh and natural flavours is too hard. Everything tasted like cheap flavoured syrup was used for any flavouring. We couldn't finish it and threw it out. Would be nice if you'd actually be able to sample a taste like every other gelateria in the country.
Michael J — Google review
This one star review is in no way a reflection of the product as the gelato was actually pretty tasty, we had the most bizarre customer service experience. I visited the store for the first time today and there was a young boy slouched over resting. He groaned when we walked in. He asked “what do you want?” and was audibly annoyed that we had walked in. I ordered my ice cream and this boy kept huffing and puffing, slamming the ice cream window and aggressively smashing the ice cream. During this 3 more customers walked in and he let out a loud groan each time someone entered. He handed me an ice cream that had no structural integrity and fell off before I even got to hold it. By this point my partner decided not to order as we just wanted to get out of there. I understand it can be annoying to have to serve customers but I’ve never seen this frustration and annoyance so openly expressed in a “professional” environment especially when nothing had been instigated from the customers end.
RTSC R — Google review
Easily, the worst frozen dessert I have ever had in life. People who are giving it a 5 star rating probably never had a real gelato in life. Ordered Chocolate Gelato, and it just tasted of sugar and milk, couldn’t even taste or get flavor of chocolate in it. Only looked like so in color. I could have eaten it considering I spent $5.70 but it was that disappointing that I had to throw it in trash. Store bought chocolate icecream would taste better than this.

Whimsical open fairy garden for the kids to play. There is also a fairy postbox, where if you send the fairies a letter (with an addressed envelope and stamp) the fairies might write back to you. My daughter was so excited to receive a letter from the Fairy Queen in the letterbox a week or so later.

Enjoyed a picnic and play here. A beautiful story. One man transforming an overgrown public area in to a fun, quirky community space. From pet cementry, to fairy wonderland. Worth a visit, 3 year old loved it.

Twenty long minutes it took. All that time trying to find the ticket booth. I was keen to pay my admission. And then, it struck me: in all that time looking for the ticket booth, I'd seen the whole garden. I recommend purchasing your ticket in advance. Five stars for the marvellous water view.

What a magical little find! So many awesome little statues and surprises to uncover and explore. Had a great time looking around with the kids and having a little fairy tea party. I loved the seven dwarves and the kissing frogs the best. Wish I had known I could do some fairy mail and I would've come prepared.

Wonderful little fairy garden bursting with fairies and interesting items everywhere. Obviously made and tendered, with love. A great kid activity. Don't forget to take a ribbon for the Wishing Tree .

While it may not boast the height of typical lookouts, Nobbys Head provides breathtaking views from its break wall, where you can gaze across Stockton Beach, the Hunter River, and out into the vast sea.

Wonderful. So happy this is open now. It's a fabulous walk and to be between the sea and the harbour with a most incredible view back to Newcastle, is wonderful. Also great to be up close to the lighthouse. Be prepared to get wet and its also very windy. 😀

I can't say I was incredibly impressed with with the actual city of Newcastle, but one of the highlights for me was the lovely walk all the way along the coast from Nobby's Point to the outstanding Memorial Walk by Bar beach. The view from The Hill is well worth it, and the walk along from Nobby's Point to The Memorial Walk was definitely a treat for me!

FogHorn Brewery, located on King Street, offers a unique experience in an industrial-chic setting. Celebrating its eighth anniversary in 2023, it has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Led by Shawn Sherlock, the brewery is at the forefront of Newcastle's craft beer scene. The venue combines a microbrewery with an American-inspired menu featuring New York-style pizza.
We found Forhorn brewery in one fine afternoon while strolling down Newcastle CBD. This place is massive with plenty of seating and friendly services. For drinks we pick the Storm Before The Storm and food we had the cheesy garlic piza and salt pepper squid. We really enjoyed the salt pepper squid, so highly recommended, we even use the sauce to dip the pizza bread into it. Just an awesome place to chill out in the afternoon for an easy drink and food.

The lovely Canadian bar tender gets you the 3 stars here guys. Otherwise it would be an easy 1. No service when entering, no hello, no nothing. That’s ok I don’t like too many people anyways. Now let’s get to the food. I attached the photo of the solar panel energy system you have going, it’s either not working or broken because your pizza dough was raw, soggy. NOT PIZZA. Chicken wings WERE DRYER than my grandmas personality. Overall, drinks, 5 stars. Food = attempt at your own risk. Love you all. Bye

She gave me such kind service with a warm smile, and that made me feel really comfortable. It’s those small, genuine gestures that leave a lasting impression — and hers did. I love hazy beer & IPA, and the one I had here was amazing. Juicy, smooth, and perfectly balanced — the kind of beer that makes you smile with the first sip. If I have the chance, I’d definitely come back for both the taste and the atmosphere.

Would have given it a 5 star but the twice fried crispy chicken wings were not crispy at all not one wing or leg was one bit crispy just rename the wings and take out the crispy other than that the beer and atmosphere was amazing will definitely be back awsome.

The beach was clean and had fewer people, which made it very nice for a relaxing day. However, there were some red flags to consider, like the lack of a lifeguard and the massive waves. While the waves were exciting, it’s important to be cautious if you're planning to swim.

Newcastle Library is a fantastic destination for families with kids, offering various children's programs and serving as an ideal indoor activity during inclement weather. The library boasts a beautiful, spacious environment that is conducive to reading and studying. While the staff are generally helpful, there have been some instances of neglect. However, the limited book selection and lack of materials in other languages have been noted as areas for improvement.
It was my first time visiting Newcastle and the library, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The librarians were all so friendly and helpful, which made me feel comfortable right away even though I was a bit timid at first. The quiet room was a fantastic space that really helped me stay focused and productive. A wonderful library and a great place to work or study!

It's a nice library. It has a quiet space area for the ones planning to read. Staff are quite helpful. Washrooms on the same floor right outside the library. ( Best if planning for long hour study ) Bus stops and cafes are few mins away . (10min walk away- For this I prefer digital library for the space and cafe )

Was a bit tricky to find this building as it is inside war memorial building (really not clear) and my reason for coming here was to print out some government paperwork ( what is it with needing print outs) but then on the computer we only had 15minutes which if any has used a government website you can not do anything in 15min. Now about the library not many books but a nice layout. Would I come here again?= I don't think so.
Alex B — Google review
If you want to print something, NEVER come here. It took me over 1 hour to print a single document – something that usually takes 1-5 minutes in any other library I’ve used in Victoria or South Australia. You must create an account, enter personal info like your DOB and address, and even then, the system kept crashing. Multiple web and printing machines failed repeatedly. Staff were kind and helpful, but the setup is terribly inefficient. Totally frustrating experience.

The Obelisk, located in Newcastle, is a historic navigation marker that has stood since 1820. Originally built as a milling facility for wheat, it now serves as a popular park and lookout offering stunning views of the beach and harbor. Visitors can climb the steps at Tyrrell Street to reach this iconic landmark and enjoy panoramic vistas of the city skyline and coastline. The area is also known for whale watching, making it an ideal spot to observe these majestic creatures.
LOVE the Obelisk, highlight of Newcastle, great views, great big Obelisk. Exactly as advertised. If you're going to Newcastle, you must see the Obelisk. Then you can go do something more boring like go swimming in the Newcastle Baths or the Bogey Hole which is a short walk away, and live forever with the memory of seeing the most glorious monument, the Newcastle Obelisk. Every city needs a Newcastle Obelisk.
MJ H — Google review
A little bit of history on the Great Northern Walk. Work a peek if you're happening by, I wouldn't go too far out of my way. Nice view from the top. The site of Newcastle's first windmill, the site now has medley of plaques about infrastructure. The water board has taken a keen interest, with a map pointing to various water landmarks. Nice little hike up a hill, probably a 5-10 minute visit for most people.
Stacey T — Google review
The Obelisk is a historical monument with stunning views. Here's a genuine review based on existing feedback: *Rating:* 4.2/5 stars *Highlights:* - *Breathtaking Views:* The Obelisk offers panoramic views of the city and ocean, making it a great spot for photography and taking in the scenery. - *Historical Significance:* This monument is a significant part of the city's history, being the site of the first water reservoir. - *Scenic Walks:* The walk up to The Obelisk is scenic, although it can be a bit of a stiff climb from the CBD. *Improvements Needed:* - *Signage:* Some visitors have noted that signage could be improved to provide more context and information about the monument. - *Seating and Shade:* There is limited seating and shade, which can make it uncomfortable for visitors who want to linger. *Overall Experience:* The Obelisk is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or scenic views. While there are some areas for improvement, the views and historical significance make it a worthwhile visit. *Tips:* - *Plan Your Visit:* Be prepared for a bit of a climb, and consider visiting during cooler parts of the day. - *Take Your Camera:* The views are stunning, so don't forget your camera. - *Learn About the History:* Take some time to learn about the history and significance of The Obelisk to enhance your visit ¹.

I travelled 5 hours and 45 minutes by train and car from ARMIDALE to see THE NEWCASTLE OBELISK, and unlike some of the other reviews suggest, GOING OUT OF YOUR WAY IS TOTALLY WORTH IT. 6 stars out of 5 if I could!!!1!1!!1!
Franko S — Google review
A very unassuming place, not too much to see here apart from the plaques of what the obelisk represents which is a former windmill which provided water to the area. However, the 360 degree views of the water and Newcastle is amazing! There are tables around on the grassed area for a casual picnic. One can walk to the beach as well.

If you're old enough, then you will know this place as "The Water-tower," because that's the only name this place had before the old metal water tower was ripped down. I absolutely loved climbing the water tower and standing on the vent in the middle of the top. It was the highest point around Newcastle. Now, there's Memorial Walk, too. Nice and safe, unlike the cliff top walk that included jumping across the gap between two rocks just to make it down, further risking your life doing it. Yeah, I definitely miss those days before everyone became too soft to actually live and have adventures.
Glenn — Google review
Nice scenery. Amazing sunset, I can only imagine the sunrise.
Eng. A — Google review
Hang gliders takeoff from Strzelecki scenic lookout and fly along the coastal cliff. It’s exciting to watch, however the sheer drop is not for the faint hearted. There are limited parking spaces and disability parking. It’s the entry point for the memorial walk. The view is spectacular but hold on to your hat and child as the wind can be strong. Sir Paul Strzelecki’s work as a geologist explorer in 1840’s helped establish Newcastle as a coal producer.

I went to the Olive Tree Markets last year when visiting Newcastle and they were great, loved them. I was very disappointed today when I got there. It had very few stalls, really not worth the visit. I did find out that it has been taken over by a big organisation and many stall holders have left because they weren’t happy. This is typical of big companies taking over a good thing and destroying it!!!

I grew up here...even on the worst weather days it is still a wonderful place for me to just sit and ponder. It could use a dedicated early start cafe....the crowds would just roll in. Come on down....bring a good book.

Lovely place to enjoy the weekend with family. Just make sure the weather is good when you plan.
