Narai-juku is a charming and well-preserved Edo-era hamlet nestled in the mountainous Kiso Valley along the Nakasendo Trail. The wooden temples, museums, souvenir shops, and historical architecture offer visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. From traditional Japanese crafts to hidden views and shrines, this quaint post town has something for everyone to appreciate.
Came here early morning by local train, it was really quiet and peaceful before all the stores open, you get to walk around and take photos all you like. The village vibe is just so peaceful and the air is so fresh and crisp in the morning, it feels good to just walk and explore what is in the back alleys. If you enjoy exploring small towns or villages, this place would be awesome. There are also some souvenir stores which sell locally made handicraft items and some local snacks and delicacies as well. A half day visit is perfect to explore the whole area at a very leisure pace.

We got there on Tuesday, later afternoon. It was super quiet and only few shops and restaurants were open. The area was really nice though and we thoroughly enjoyed our walk through it which took 1 hour.
Mohammad M — Google review
We stopped by in the afternoon while driving through from Lake Suwa, en route to Nagoya. We enjoyed strolling through this rustic historic town, superbly preserved since the Edo period. The souvenir shops, restaurants and minshuku are worth exploring. We sampled some of the snacks and sake, and walked along the river and enjoyed stepping onto the timber bridge -Kiso Ohashi This bridge crosses the Narai River, which runs parallel to the main street. Extending 30 meters, it is one of the longest wooden bridges in Japan. It was built quite recently, in the 1990s. Our only regret is that we were a bit early for the glorious autumn colours as we were there in mid-October.
Jeremy W — Google review
Wonderful place to visit although the P&P crowd (photo and pee) who stops here between train hours from-to Nagoya and Nagano can make it too touristy certain times of the day. If your schedule allows, stay overnight in one the inns ( we stayed in one right in the middle of town and it was fabulous). This way you can stroll through town during peaceful times in the evening and early morning when everything is closed and quiet. During the day you can enjoy going in and out of the shops and enjoying various snacks. See the place before it turns into a total tourist trap, which it's rapidly headed towards.
Yobo S — Google review
We visited Narai-juku and found it to be a charming and very photogenic spot. The preserved street has a wonderful historical atmosphere and is great for strolling and taking pictures. The only downside is that most shops and cafés close quite early, so there wasn’t much open later in the day. Still, it’s definitely worth a visit for the scenery and the unique vibe.
Noam D — Google review
We came here early, around 9am, by car to wander through town for an hour. At that time, it was still very quiet with barely anyone out on the streets. The tranquility almost teleports you back to the Edo period. The idyllic landscape of autumn trees in the background makes the whole place look like a painting. PS: There are many parking lots scattered across town. It'll cost you 500 yen.
Ilse E — Google review
The town itself is beautifully preserved and charming. However, when we came, it was completely empty and almost shops were closed, which unfortunately made the long drive feel less worthwhile. We hiked the Torii Pass, it was a pleasant walk, but not spectacular enough to justify the trip alone.
Anh V — Google review
We arrived a bit late around 2:15pm and lots of the restaurants were closed already but the area itself was nice and clean. Locals live there and they opened the store on the ground floor. The view is amazing especially in autumn and could imagine during winter it must be a magical sightings.

Visitors can explore replicas of village buildings from various historical eras, offering a glimpse into Japan's rich heritage. The space exudes a sacred ambiance, inviting guests to reflect on the contrast between the grandeur of the Heian period and the warmth of ordinary community life. Despite being relatively unknown, this hidden gem offers an enriching experience for those interested in Japanese history and culture.
I thought this was an amazing place to visit. In my hometown in England we have the same style structures. It’s truly fascinating how similar the buildings are despite being divided by so much distance.

It is a historical Japanese houses from 600 A. D. It would be worth to stop by if you are around. I visited here in Dec. they were all locked. We could see only outside. Clean and nice area

Not as exciting as some people posted. It's not far from the station by taxi but you'll need to worry about returning to the station if you don't speak Japanese and don't know how to call a taxi to pick you up from the middle of nowhere.

Grassy plateau with annual horse races, grazing cows & views of the Japanese Alps & Mount Fuji.
On a clear day, it is well worth the effort to find this viewpoint and the Takabocchi Skyline on which is is located. Stunning views across Suwa Lake and city to the south, with Fuji lurking over 100 km away in the background. Across the road from the walkway to the top viewpoint (about 10-15 minutes walk) there is a car park, toilet, and terrific views of the eastern side of the Japanese Alps. Highly recommended (but not worth it really if it's too cloudy). We found our way with GPS up the small backroads through some delightful forest from Matsumoto city, and several times I thought the road would peter out but it did eventually get us to the Skyline route. The other entry from the direction of Suwa is much easier.

(Translated by Google) August 23, 2025 I've been to Shiojiri many times, but I've never climbed Takabocchi. This is my first attempt. This is the summit of Mt. Takabocchi, and there's a viewing area. As it's the summit, it's a great place to get a 360-degree view. Even in the mid-August heatwaves, the temperature at the summit remains comfortable at around 25°C (although it's quite hot walking up to the summit). The view is quite impressive, with views of the entire Lake Suwa and the Kurumayama Plateau. On clear days, it's a great place to see the Yatsugatake Mountains and the Northern Alps. It should be cooler and more comfortable from September onwards, but the downside is that the road leading up to the plateau is quite narrow. Passing is difficult for much of the way, so if you're not used to driving, it may be quite difficult, so please be careful. The Furukawa Art Museum is a small yet impressive museum that showcases a collection of contemporary Japanese paintings, oil paintings, ceramics, crafts, and 15th-century illustrated manuscripts. Visitors can also enjoy the traditional tea house called Sukiya Cafe where they can savor Matcha green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets while taking in the serene view of the Japanese garden.
This is such a magnificent museum with two parts. Start at the old building which is conserved as a traditional tea house. Enjoy the art and the wonderful quiet and greenery. Then walk down the road to the modern art museum and enjoy the more modern paintings.

Thank you for a wonderful time. This place truly is Nagoya local gem. Do buy a combo ticket for 800yen if you show their webpage, but sold exclusively at the main building. Easy excess from the station but a very limited parking place which was hard to find thus ended up wasting 800yen extra. However, things on display were amazing and despite the limited number of items, it is a very nice place to come with your kid and introduce the art Do visit their cafe that offers absolutely yummy traditional sweets and has a stunning garden to appreciate while sipping on Matcha. YES RECOMMENDED for kids 4+

(Translated by Google) This building was built in the Tenpo era, approximately 180 years ago. Combs used by women of the Edo period were made and sold in the storefront. You can feel the vestiges of the era and the scenery all around you, and it's like you've traveled back in time to the Edo period. Peeking your head out from the store, you can see the sight of people passing by along the Nakasendo road, and if you go up to the guest room on the second floor, you can feel the vestiges of the time as people sipped tea, looked out over the Nakasendo road, and talked about how it was raining today. There is still much more to see and feel, such as the folding umbrellas, soil, garden, and storehouse. Please take the time to quietly cherish everything. The man who gives us a quick explanation at the beginning and the lady at the reception desk are both wonderful. This shop is said to have been a wholesaler of Japanese combs, a specialty of Kiso, and the vertically long townhouse structure is well preserved, and the combs made at that time had teeth less than 1mm apart. I was also impressed to see it. Unfortunately, it seems that combs like this are no longer made in Narai. 7th April 2024. Is a beautiful old town also know for the lacquer crafting. But big disappointment there is no update on goggle here as most shop is closed even on Google info mention is open. I can only guess is a Sunday but seems there is not enough information that could be found about why 90% of this town os closed. Not to mention google map direction walking to the train was misleading. Please see local sign board directions to the manless Kiso-Hirasawa station. And once you get on the the train , PICK UP A TICKET From a machine as you enter to show to the conductor when you get off at the next station later. Really a pity didn’t get to see the beautiful craft works…

It's giving authentic Japan vibes. The old house, the road, everything! If you come in in autumn like me, this town has some festival and there's an activity we can do! I'm lucky to have this experience. I meet a lot of great urushi lacquer wear artisan! They show me their work and explain the steps. In the photos you can see the artist teach me how to craft on the wood, and you know what, in his demonstration he used the real fine gold powder!! It's such a nice experience. Oh one more thing, for more better experience, if you're not understand Japanese, I recommend you to have tour guide, so they can explain to you the beauty of this Kiso town

Despite the Japanese signage, visitors appreciate the well-maintained grounds and the panoramic view from the top of the tower. The staff are described as sweet, kind, and helpful. Additionally, there are outdoor activities for children to enjoy.
It was great exercise to go to in my bike. The grounds are well maintained and the view of the area you get is so worth the trip up the mountain. The staff at the place were super nice. Enrei Country Club offers a delightful golfing experience, perfect for both seasoned players and newcomers. The course features varied terrain with ups and downs, making it an engaging challenge over its lengthy layout. While the fairways are spacious and the greens well-maintained, golfers should be prepared for some tricky shots if their driving isn't on point. A highlight of the day is often spotting local wildlife, such as Japanese antelopes during your round.

A delicious lunch is especially helpful when your score is bad lol. I don't often order katsu curry at golf courses, but this time my score was good, so I decided to go for katsu curry to celebrate the occasion. "Pork Loin Cutlet Curry" It was served on a huge platter, and I thought it looked like a huge portion, but the plate was actually shallow. I was secretly relieved. The curry had no toppings and was a slightly spicy curry with a hint of heat. But the pork loin cutlet was the best part. I was surprised at how juicy and tender the cutlet was. I can't believe they serve food of this calorie on a golf course!! The cutlet was overwhelmingly more delicious than the curry. Of course, the curry was also delicious. I checked the website and found that "The Earth's Jewel Box exhibit is based on approximately 1,000 first-class specimens from the Tohoku University Materials Research Institute and approximately 5,000 specimens collected by Koken Kogyo over its 50-year history. The exhibits, along with video equipment, models, drilling equipment, various documents, and photographs, are categorized into the following introductory section and seven themes." This led me to understand that it's run by a private company. If you're a mineral lover, this is a must-visit. (Or maybe even people who like power stones?) The exhibits are well-thought-out, teaching you everything from the topography to the minerals. What was particularly interesting was that the chemical formulas were almost all written out, making it easy to understand which atoms (molecules) caused the color changes. The minerals are what we call gemstones, and many of them are aesthetically pleasing or cool, so I think they'll be enjoyable for people of all ages. There are also exhibits of meteorites, fossils, and drilling equipment. Outside the building there is a natural atmosphere where you can stroll around, and I was glad I took the time to visit. The shop sold a variety of minerals and items that could be used to make accessory parts.

(Translated by Google) I went on a weekday morning. There were only two or three other visitors, so it was comfortable to look around. Koken Kogyo Co., Ltd. appears to be a boring machine company, and they have a collection of interesting minerals from all over the world. There are so many that it's impossible to take your time to see them all, but there are explanations and exhibits based on various themes, so I was able to learn while enjoying the beautiful minerals. The museum is located on a well-maintained hill, which makes a nice place for a stroll. The love is so great that it would take half a day to see everything. I think this is one of the best facilities in the country in terms of the weight of love. I recommend this facility to anyone who loves rocks or museums. Love is important in a museum, isn't it? Honaraima is now part of Shiojiri City, but it seems that it was once an enclave of the Takato clan and had a free climate. It is clear that this is a village where famous people stayed and had active exchanges with other areas. However, it is a quiet village now because it is located far from the national highway...😅 In addition, at the back of the museum is Kamai-an, a restored mansion of a local celebrity. This is a hermitage where you can learn about the folk customs of this village. Hiraide Ichirizuka, also known as the Old Nakasendo Distance Marker, is a historical landmark built in 1604 under the order of Hidetada Tokugawa. These markers were strategically placed along the Nakasendo Route to improve roadways and cover 36 towns with Edo Nihonbashi as the base.

(Translated by Google) Ichirizuka were built on each highway in 1604 by order of Hidetada Tokugawa, and were almost completed in 1604. Hidetada appointed Hakumoto Nagai, Mitsushige Honda, and others as Ichirizuka magistrates, and quickly commandeered both Shogunate territory and private territory along the Nakasendo Route to prepare the road, and expanded the 36 towns with Edo Nihonbashi as the base. Each mile was defined as one mile, and milestones were built on both sides of the road, and hackberry trees and other plants were planted on top of the mounds to serve as route markers, comforting the traveling spirit and facilitating passage. The width of the road was determined to be 5 ken (9 meters), the mound was 5 ken square, and the height was 1 jo (2 or 3 meters), but after the Meiji period, there was no need for this, and it disappeared one after another, even in the prefecture. There are very few pieces like Hiraide that retain their original shape. During the Edo period, eight milestone mounds were built in Shiojiri City along three roads, but Hiraide is the only one where both mounds remain. This milestone is the 59th one from the starting point of Nihonbashi, and it is known that there were two teahouses in the vicinity around 1756. Shiojiri City Board of Education This milestone pine is also known as Hiraide's milk pine. It is said that taking pine needles can improve milk production. This pine tree is also known as ``Yamamoto Kansuke Gunship Pine, Kansuke Raising Pine''. In 1545, when Takeda Harunobu (Shingen) and Ogasawara Nagatoki fought at Kikyogahara in Shiojiri, Yamamoto Kansuke discovered a crying baby on the battlefield, placed it in a large pine tree, and returned to the battlefield. . When the baby returned to the pine tree after the battle, the dew that fell from the pine staved off his hunger and the baby was doing well. The current pine tree died in 1863, and has survived several generations since then.
