Yubatake is a central attraction in Kusatsu Onsen, Japan, featuring a man-made pool of geothermal water surrounded by bath houses and traditional inns. This hot water field was created to cool down the piping hot spring water and collect the minerals from it. The site consists of seven wooden slides that help cool the hot spring water, which wells out at a rate of 4,000 liters per minute. Yubatake is also known for its enchanting nighttime illumination.
This is Kusatsu’s famous natural hot spring source area that’s been developed for viewing. The area has a strong boiled egg smell from the sulfur. While impressive during the day, this place truly comes alive and looks much more beautiful at night when the lighting creates a more dramatic atmosphere.
Minwoo K — Google review
It is a beautiful place. The view is awesome at night. It feels so nice to drink in from of this place. You can see a lot of stores here. And there is convenience store too. It is the most beautiful onsen place that I have ever seen in Japan
Ronnie I — Google review
PSA: IT SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS But the view is as beautiful as the pictures make it to be. In fact, I'd say pictures don't do it justice as to how beautiful and lovely the atmosphere actually is. Please go visit, it's just large enough.. not too big where you feel like you can't explore the whole area. Also not too small where you get bored after 30 minutes to an hour.
TatteredAllure — Google review
Kusatsu Onsen is one of the most atmospheric onsen towns we have visited. The highlight was the Yubatake (hot water field) in the town centre. Seeing the steam rise at night was beautiful and calming. The walk along the nearby shopping street was enjoyable, with many small shops and snacks to explore at a relaxed pace. The whole area felt safe, clean and easy to navigate. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the onsen town ambience. Highly recommended for both first-time and returning visitors.
Daddydrives — Google review
This is an enchanting town full of public hot baths (onsens). There are also a lot of public foot baths. It is a place to stroll with your own Yukata (traditional wear) entering into different hot baths. Don't miss an evening walk around town and the center as it is illuminated beautifully
Cynthia G — Google review
Very big landmark of this onsen city where surrounded by shops, restaurants, temple and hotels. Also have some spots to do the foot spa (onsen). We can smell the onsen water mineral. Really impressed
Mildthun — Google review
This location is one of the attractions of Japanese hot springs (onsen). It is not far from Osaka. It is very unique. You can enjoy a complimentary foot spa or public hot springs during your visit.
Raymond W — Google review
An amazing place to visit! The color of the water and the sulfur collection process are fascinating to see. Around the area, you’ll find many hand baths and foot baths, along with plenty of shops and food stands. A great spot to explore and relax.

Sainokawara Park, situated in Kusatsu, is a serene urban park surrounded by volcanic rocks and filled with naturally heated pools. It's just a short walk from the Kusatsu Onsen bus terminal and the Yubatake. The park features Sainokawara Rotemburo, the largest open-air bath in Kusatsu Onsen.
Open space hot spring. Beautiful view of the whole stream of water. Multiple foot soaking pools available but all are open without shade (we went on a rainy day) The spot may be tricky to find, and there are no parking space at the spot so find parking outside near supermarkets or government buildings (weekend).

Sainokawara Park is a peaceful and scenic spot just a short walk from the Yubatake. The walking paths are surrounded by nature, volcanic rock, and naturally heated streams, which makes the whole place feel calming and relaxing. Inside the park is Sainokawara Rotemburo, the largest open-air bath in Kusatsu Onsen, and it is well worth the visit if you enjoy onsen. The atmosphere is quiet and soothing, and it is a wonderful place to take a slow walk, unwind, and enjoy the natural beauty of Kusatsu.

Nice pools in a beautiful surroundings with flowers and forrested area. You can bath your feed in several pools st the end there is a public onsen. Good access by wheelchair toilets available no eating or drinking services there are some sitting areas but not to much places with shade. Especially the pools themself are exposed to the sun

If you come to Kusatsu, don't forget to come here. Most people don't realize but this is walkable from the Yubatake and it's open and pretty. If you don't come here, it's like going to McDonalds, ordering a burger and a drink but not the fries.

Excellent unique free park with warm thermal waters flowing throughout, plus a public onsen in the middle you can pay a fee to visit. What's not to love. ARRIVAL From the front entry it seemed pretty small, but once you walk in a bit the boardwalks open up into a wider area with lots of steaming pools. This place must be very beautiful in the winter. People were wandering around on the boardwalks and within the parks, often barefoot. There were several foot bath areas, a Devil’s Kettle that made a whistling sound when you stand at a distance but goes quiet when you get close (it’s basically just a small trickle making the sound). Off to the side we saw a statue of a bodhisattva with two western-looking cherubs clinging to it, which was unexpected. SCENERY AND HIGHLIGHTS We walked all the way up to the top of the paths, no one around which was peaceful. From the top we got a nice view of a mountainside covered in orange and yellow leaves. Picked out way back the way we came, the path filled with low bamboo-like kusa-kusa grasses, and plants with leaves bigger than my palm. ONSEN EXPERIENCE On a whim we decided to try the public onsen inside the park. No showers so you just rinse as best you can, and apparently they have a mixed bath option on Fridays. We paid the entrance fee, got two towels and used a 100 JPY coin for the locker for valuables. Outside, the onsen was huge with a big cascading water feature (where the onsen water is fed into the pool). The water near the falls felt maybe 40–41°C, hotter as you approach, and the area near the entrance was around 38°C. About six people total on a weekday but since it's so big it still feels remote. Beautiful autumn colors surrounding the onsen. Very nice park visit with a quiet viewpoint at the end and a big outdoor public onsen (paid visit) as an option. Would visit again and recommend.
A C — Google review
Good for a walk and remember to try the free onsen outside with your feet. The water source is different to the main source with less acidity. If you forgot to bring a towel, you may consider to buy a towel at the entrance of the onsen (300 yens). I don't recommend paper tissue as it is not easy to find a rubbish bin.

A 10-minute walk along a winding path from the center of Kusatsu, you’ll find beautiful Sai-no-Kawara Park. The park stands on a rugged rocky riverbed, with a gurgling stream running through lush forested uplands like an ancient scar. Steaming, mineral-rich hot springs burn along the banks of Sai-no-Kawara, forming a unique dry landscape that flows all the way down to the park and into the many hot spring baths. Sai-no-Kawara Park stretches along the riverbed for about a quarter of a mile, and the connection between Jizo and the park lies in the park’s name: Sai-no-Kawara means “riverbed in the west,” which is a homonym of “riverbed of the underworld” in Japanese. Whenever a child dies young, their young souls gather on the banks of a river called Sai-no-Kawara, and the kind-hearted Jizo comes to comfort and protect them. Gazing at the steamy riverbed and the warm springs gushing out of the ground, the tale of horror and strangeness doesn’t seem so strange. The warm natural spring waters of Sai-no-Kawara not only have physical health benefits, but also mental and spiritual benefits. In addition, the trail down Sai-no-Kawara is considered a very important pilgrimage route by the locals. For all visitors who are not lucky enough to live in the suburbs of Japan, this steaming, quarter-mile-long riverbed is a magical and otherworldly world.

So beautiful, absolutely worth the time to visit if you are in Kusatsu. It’s a quick walk from the Yubatake on a street lined with cute shops (including a tsukemono/pickle shop with cats!!!) there are foot baths and so many amazing sights along the park walkway. One of my favorite places I visited on this trip!!!

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Nestled in the Gunma Prefecture of Japan, Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort has been welcoming visitors for over a century and holds the distinction of being home to Japan's first ski lift. The resort offers five slopes suitable for skiers of all levels, with plenty of beginner-friendly courses. In addition to skiing, the resort also provides rental services for those who arrive empty-handed.
People staff amenities. It's a sweet spot. Older skiers work well. Snowboards abound. Not always skilled. Slamon snowboard to avoid collision. Consider rhem ground covering. I'm commuting daily by bus from below. The next visit will be overnight. Only 3 hours per day, the bus schedule is limited, and do not be late. Taxi down will be costly. Try to plan ahead. I did not.

It suited my level beginner-intermediate snowboarding. Hardly any English signs in the area but enough friendly people trying their best to help. It's easy to get to as well from the town, I walked there via route 292. Some part of the road can be narrow but you can cut across via the Sainokawara park. The chair to the upper half of the skifield was closed due to strong wind but the sign was only at the entrance of the chair. However to get to this entrance, you'll have to go down slightly from the gondola exit, and when I figured it was closed, it's either walk uphill back to gondola platform or go down (intermediate). It was daunting as I was still a beginner at that stage. Also the gear rental can be done on site without online booking. Maybe it's communication difficulties, I was just given the gear, no fitting. Pretty much DIY. The gear rental accept credit card, but the entrance ticket office cash or cards only (I didn't pay attention which one). Food was decent and affordable. There's a water station in the cafeteria.

Throwback to where my skiing journey began! This special place holds my first memories on the slopes, and now it's where my kids discover the joy of snow for the very first time. Family fun and unforgettable moments!

such a fun experience. rented everything for a day pass and was so cool. tool lessons as well. the instructor did not speak English but we were able to get by with gestures. worth checking out if you are here.
Michael R — Google review
It was my first time to try skiing. We arrived there on a Saturday afternoon, around 1pm, and we tried to rent the ski wear and gear, but there were no more available sizes for us. It was full, so we just rented in a nearby shop. After renting, we went back to the Ski Resort. It is a public space and skiing there is free, as long as you have a gear. I also learned that all residents of Kusatsu Onsen can freely avail of the Gondola and lift as much as they want. We joined the Kusatsu Ski School for 5000 yen. It was helpful if you're a beginner. I even lost track of time about how long that lasted, coz it was fun--maybe about 2 hours. The teacher tried his best to speak English. After that, we just enjoyed skiing in the area. We tried the Gondola for ¥2000, and we skied from there. There is a beginner-friendly route up there. My friends also tried the ski lift for also ¥2000. For a beginner like me, I was scared to try it coz jumping off at the top was scary. One of my friends also tripped over when she jumped down. Just be careful when you try it. There is also a food court, but expect that on the weekend, it is really packed. You have to wait for vacant tables before you can sit. There is also a souvenir shop. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience.
Rhona D — Google review
The ski resort is great for beginners. slopes are not so tough, so not scary to train for the first time. The snow was also good in February. And the best thing is that after snowboarding you can go to the best ever onsen of Kusatu
Olga N — Google review
Must go! Sky swing, gondola and banzip tengu for 3100yen only, good for adults or family. Definitely will visit again in Winter!
OK G — Google review
The snow in this area is not as powdery and heavy as in northern Japan such as Hokkaido and Aomori. The slopes consist 50% beginner’s courses. Some of the routes are too flat or upwards. For first timer skiers and snowboarders it will be a good place to have fun. There is an area for kids too. The rental shop has old equipments and colorful wears. Canteen has quite a number of choices for lunch. Overall I recommend this place for first timer and beginners. There is one short route for intermediate level but might be too boring for those who seek challenges.

Ōtaki no Yu is a spacious and traditional hot spring facility in Kusatsu, featuring multiple pools with varying water temperatures. The onsen offers an awase bath experience and a private bath option for visitors. It stands out as one of the best onsen experiences, with indoor and outdoor baths ranging from very hot to ice cold. The building exudes an old-world charm, adding to the overall appeal. Additionally, visitors can enjoy local sake at the lounge cafe after their relaxing soak.
That was definitely a great public Onsen! I really liked it. The various Onsen made the experience even better. It was clean, authentic and the people where friendly to me even though I am foreign. The sauna was Hot (90 degrees) how I like it and the three different Basins with different temperatures have been great! The open air bath was beatifully made and relaxing. And the indoor onsen has been big and spacious. Otaki no yu even provides different Sorts of shampoo and body Wash. Even body Lotion at the end. My stay Has been very relaxing!

There are many Onsens to choose from. Trust me, this is the one you want to visit. It's the best hands down. I visited many in the area and this is by far my favourite one. It has many pools to choose from, and at different temperatures. It has both indoor and outdoor options. 10/10 would recommend!

Theives! Do NOT go to this place. We went to this public onsen place and one of us had his shoes stolen from the lockers. The staff were extremely unhelpful and refused to check the CCTV for us. Imagine taking a bath and ended up with no shoes to leave this place. We ended up buying a new pair of shoes at a run-down place right round the corner. Needless to say, the staff did not offer any compensation at all. We ended up calling the police but they refused to treat this case a theft and did not bother to issue any certificate for us to claim travel insurance as they "do not believe this was a case of theft". Worst yet, the staff were giggling at us at the back. This is pure discrimination towards foreigners and I find it really appalling by the rudeness I have been treated by both the staff and the police. Most of the five stars comments are likely fake and the discrimination against foreigners are legit. The staff and police should be ashamed of themselves at the very least.
Abc T — Google review
+1 to those saying this might be the best out of the three and you might want to spend a good time here given the higher prices compared to the other two. But I can imagine though that these might get crowded if there will be too much people. And I guess that’s the reason why they stop admitting people past 8pm. Also saw a theft review here ? Separate lockers for shoes, valuables, and clothes are provided so I don’t know how it happened.

Wonderfull onsen, well maintained good dressing room and shower area. Several inside and outside baths aswell as a hot! Sauna. Quite big and modern layout. The outside area is green and has a good vide. Has a little cafe offering a selection of drinks there is also a shop on site.

Nice, well kept, & centrally located! This water was a bit more acidic than I like - actually “stung” my skin. At first I thought it was the heat or that I somehow hurt my skin along the way only to realize that I’m a bit sensitive to this water’s mineral mixture.
Ms M — Google review
Is that the best onsen in Kusatsu!? It might is! The baths are all excellent and there are many kinds. I was lucky and could enjoy the outdoor bath under the snow, at night. There is also an area with many baths, all of different temperatures for you to challenge. Absolutely lovely and recommended.

Kusatsu Onsen Netsunoyu is a charming two-story building in the Taisho-roman style, situated in front of Yubatake. The facility offers a unique experience where visitors can witness traditional methods for cooling bathing waters through dance shows and demonstrations by the Yumomi Girls.
A must do at Kusatsu, the queues for the tickets gets long quick and there is a capacity limit, but there are multiple shows throughout the day, so do plan accordingly. Most of the live explanation is in Japanese but there is an introductory video with english subs that will give you a rough idea of what is going on. Nonetheless the show has such a deep history and not only was the performance entertaining, but watching the local crowd reactions and singing the theme song afterwards was fun too. Don’t miss!
Darren L — Google review
This traditional performance originated from the practical need to cool Kusatsu’s extremely hot spring water, and has evolved into a cultural show performed three times each in the morning and afternoon. Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before each performance, and you can find discount coupons on their website to save some money on admission. The performance itself is quite fascinating and definitely worth experiencing once if you’re visiting Kusatsu. It’s an interesting glimpse into how practical necessity became cultural tradition, and makes for an enjoyable way to learn about the area’s hot spring heritage while being entertained.
Minwoo K — Google review
Kusatsu Onsen(hot springs) ‘Yumomi to odori’ (traditional cooling water ceremony and dance). This was my first trip to Kusatsu and I genuinely had no idea what the Yumomi show involved; there were a lot of people lining up to see it, so we decided that it must be worth lining up for. First we lined up to purchase our tickets which were 700 yen per person. Then we joined a new line which was for the next show. It was a pleasant autumn day, with lots of young people lining up, so people watching kept us entertained. When the show started I learnt that the temperature of the hot spring water in Kusatsu is 50 degrees and a unique dance with wooden paddles had been created to cool the water down. We enjoyed the show which is added drawcard to an already popular hot spring town, it is a bit of fun, a bit of culture and a good money spinner for the town.
TRACEyanne Y — Google review
We visited Netsunoyu in Kusatsu to watch the traditional Yumomi performance, located right beside the Yubatake. The natural spring water in Kusatsu is extremely hot, so the locals use large wooden paddles to cool the water by stirring it in rhythm. Instead of adding cold water and changing the mineral balance, this method preserves the quality of the onsen. The performance was both educational and enjoyable. The Yumomi dancers sang folk songs while demonstrating the technique, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was a meaningful look into Kusatsu’s unique onsen culture. Definitely worth experiencing if you are visiting Kusatsu Onsen.
Daddydrives — Google review
Fun experience to try out the traditional method on cooling the 50C onsen water. I had a lot of fun doing it, and the staff helped on taking videos and photos as well. That was very helpful, especially since I'm a solo traveler. Later the evening I watched the performance as well.
Luke L — Google review
The entrance fee is 700 yen. There is a timetable. The whole performance is about a half hour long. Foreigners can’t really understand this simple performance, but it’s mainly about some methods to cool down the temperature in the old day, and also some history background’s introduction.
Antony L — Google review
Great show! Come visit and watch. The show takes about 30 minutes so if you're there for a short period of time, at least try to catch a glimpse of the first 5-10 minutes to get the essence of it.
TatteredAllure — Google review
If you visit the website, there is a 50 yen off coupon, which could be helpful for people ordering in larger groups. Discounts tend to add up! Its a good idea to check the show times available on your day beforehand as well. You can purchase tickets 30 minutes before each show time at the ticket window. People start lining up around then as well, and being toward the front of the line will give you better choice of your seat. We enjoyed the show, but it is entirely in Japanese, so reconsider if that will bother you. There was a dance at the beginning, then a long talking portion with some audience participation, and finally the two yumomi demonstrations with singing. It was interesting, but not something I would see more than once personally.

Super public bath
Nestled in the heart of Kusatsu Onsen, Gozanoyu is a charming public bathhouse that beautifully captures the essence of Japan's Edo and Meiji periods. With its traditional white plaster walls and wooden shingle roof, this two-story establishment offers visitors an authentic experience steeped in history. Guests can indulge in soothing hot springs sourced from both Yubatake and Bandai, allowing for a unique bathing experience that reflects historical practices.
A very busy public bath but that is to be expected given its central location. There is admission fee and you can come without a towel (they will charge you). Secure lockers are upstairs. Onsen waters are warm but not boiling. There is a resting room on the second floor. Great views of the town.
Villagemayor — Google review
Right by the Yubatake in a central location. Shoes should be taken off immediately at the entrance. This wasn’t obvious to me as there was no mat or signs of shoes. Place your shoes in a free locker and take the key. Entrance is ¥800 for adults, you will be charged extra if you didn’t bring your own towel. The interior design is very well executed and the lighting also gives a relaxing vibe. The changing rooms have hairdryer and 2 products (for the hair?). It was very dark and gloomy in the actual onsen. Not in an atmospheric way unfortunately but the water temperature was quite hot. There were 3 baths. I tried 2 of them. The first was extremely hot, the second was a temperature similar to other onsen I have been to. The relaxation area on the second floor is spacious and has nice views of the Yubatake and plaza just outside. Tattoos are OK/allowed.

Really enjoyed the experience in this bath house. It was very clean, tidy and there are lockers to put your shoes away whilst there are other lockers near the baths for your valuables. It’s best not to bring too much in with you. You do need to bring your own towel but towels are available for purchase but only big enough to tie your hair up. As an overseas visitor, bath houses are a concept that isn’t at all a thing at home, so it was a bit intimidating on what to do. Also as someone with tattoos, I had no issues being accepted in. Other guests may have been put off by a foreigner in there, but I am appreciating the culture as well as the area itself. Can’t really visit without trying it out once. The water itself was hot which was nice to relax in- feeling all the stresses wash away. There was 4 baths in the same room and I was able to use one by myself for a little while. Did have to wait for the other facilities to be free such as the wash station but not for too long.

Botanical garden
Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland is a unique zoo located at the highest altitude in Japan. It features a diverse range of animals from tropical climates, including crocodiles, capybaras, monkeys, toucans, and alligators. The Jungle Dome provides a warm and snug environment throughout the year due to the hot spring heat, creating a climate similar to Southeast Asia.
I’m not sure how to feel about this place. It’s definitely interesting, and an inspired use of the natural hot springs in Kusatsu. The animals in the zoo are a unique and diverse bunch, and I enjoyed seeing them. You’re even allowed to touch some of them unsupervised (not sure how great this is for animal welfare, but what do I know)! The building itself is curious, and certainly unique. I don’t know if it’s just the nature of concrete to blacken and spoil, and I’m sure the humid air from the hot springs doesn’t provide the perfect environment for maintaining steel and glass, but the whole place had a slightly grotty/falling apart feel to it. It felt like I stumbled into an abandoned tropical research station! As much as I had fun, I hope the animals are being treated well. I’m giving this place a tentative 5 stars, but let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised if this place closed down for any number of reasons.

Rare Animals and Wonderful Experiences after Onsen This place has an amazing collection of rare animals! I was absolutely stunned by the global butterfly collection and specimens. The variety was incredible. We had some truly unique experiences, like feeding the Japanese macaques in their free-range enclosure, and getting to touch an armadillo at the petting area (Fureai-kan). I highly recommend it as a daytime stop after checking out of your accommodation, especially if you're in the area enjoying the onsen (hot springs) in Kusatsu. Walking distance from the Bus Terminal (central area) of Kusatsu. Whether you're visiting with family or as a group of adults, if you have any interest in animals, you'll love this place. My family could easily have spent more than two hours here!
Shunichi K — Google review
It is a sad and heartbreaking sight. Animal welfare authorities (if exist in Japan at all) should be concerned. Place runs since 1970, but is seemingly in total decline. Animals have zero enrichment, they look lethargic and sad. Some enclosures are ridiculously small.
Creamy L — Google review
Mixed feelings- having just seen many of the same species in the San Diego zoo- exciting to get so incredibly close but heartbreaking to see such deprived housing. Reviews say its like a prison. Prepare for Incredibly hot inside. Price was 1300 a person. Conditions are dirty too. Im still recovering from seeing an owl in a small birdcage.
Rosa S — Google review
I don't recommend to visit until the owners/local government invest some money to improve the animals' conditions. I had tears in my eyes most of the time and didn't finish the whole area.
Diana R — Google review
A very sad place with the owners apparently not concerned about animal wellbeing at all. 😓 Most of the large variety of animal species are held in inhumane conditions, in tiny cages, with no enrichment. This place should have been long closed but somehow it goes on for over 50 years. And people still give it 4-5 stars (??). Poor little creatures.
Mikhail F — Google review
What an amazing zoo!! You can see lots of rare animals/ reptiles here. And you can even interact with/ touch some of them! Tho the facilities are a bit old, I can see that the staff are paying great effort in taking care of the animals. They wrote detailed descriptions and drew cute pictures about the animals. I had a good time here indeed!
Charlie W — Google review
The state of this place is deplorable. Animals are locked in tiny cages, it’s dirty and do not reflect their habitat. They were shifting from side to side, missing fur and feathers. If you love animals, then do not come here. We cried watching them.

Kōsenji Temple is a must-visit Buddhist site located in Kusatsu Onsen, known for its picturesque snowy setting and stunning views of steaming hot springs. This temple, part of the Shingon sect Toyoyama school, was opened by Gyoki, a high priest from the Nara period. The temple offers panoramic views of Kusatsu Onsen township and its famous communal bathhouse, Shirahata no Yu.
Kusatsu Attractions Recommendation ⛩️ Kusatsu Onsen Temple A 3-day, 2-night trip to Kusatsu Onsen Apart from staying at a hot spring hotel and enjoying the accommodations and meals, I highly recommend spending a day exploring the Kusatsu Onsen area. A must-visit spot is Kusatsu Onsen Temple, located on the mountaintop. From there, you can take in the breathtaking views of Kusatsu and admire the beautiful hot spring fields. With the combination of the five-story pagoda and the snowy scenery, it feels like a picturesque postcard.
Chelsea B — Google review
Nice medium sized temple that is located directly beside the main town square center. There is a long visible staircase but there is a shorter one directly behind the entrance at the top that is not visible from there bottom. There is an easier but more lengthy road route that goes around the side. If you drive there is a parking lot at the top. There is a nice 5 story pagoda at the top as well.
Cory S — Google review
The legend of Kosenji Temple is related to the discovery of Kusatsu Onsen. It is said that in 721, the monk Gyoki discovered Kusatsu Onsen and founded the temple here. In 1200, the lord of Kusatsu built the main hall of Kosenji Temple. The main hall looks like a building that has been renovated in recent years. The Shakado Hall next to it was built in 1703. It is a small temple with an ancient flavor, guarding this hot spring town. The main hall of Kosenji Temple enshrines Yakushi Nyorai, and is known as one of the three major hot spring pharmacists in Japan, along with Arima Onsen Onsenji Temple in Kobe and Yamanaka Onsen Ioji Temple in Kaga.

Lovely little temple nearby the town center up the stairway. It has a tower and several walkways to explore around.
Luke L — Google review
This temple is located right next to the large parking garage and the station/visitor center. Quite small, but had pretty seasonal plants and a small office that does goshuin. When we visited, the pagoda was under construction. There is a large staircase leading down to the yubatake.

This is the temple beside the Yubatake Onsen. Its so nice. Mang Japanese are coming over to pray here
Ardith T — Google review
This Shrine and Pagoda complex has an excellent view of the entire town of Kusatsu and especially the Yubatake. Away from most of the foot traffic in the area, it provides a nice serene spot for reflection and appreciation of the entire atmosphere of the town. It is open 24/7, and at night is well lit for easy navigation, as well as excellent night time photographs and reflection. For anyone unfamiliar with seeing Torii Gates, Pagodas, or Buddhist temples, this is an excellent addition to your stop in town!

Nestled in the midst of seasonal foliage, West Riverside open-air bath offers a serene retreat with its hot springs, shrines, and statues. Just a short walk from Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort, this spacious roten-buro style onsen provides a relaxing experience. The water temperature varies by location and is hotter closer to the source. While there are no shower facilities or toiletries provided, visitors can enjoy the warm waters and picturesque surroundings.
Mix bath / Family time is only on Friday from 5:30pm If driving, parking is available across the main road near ski resort. You’ll have to cross the road and walk towards this Onsen. No washing area. Recommended to splash and was with warm water beside the baths. Lovely setting and huge! Take time to enjoy!

Absolutely loved Sainokawara Open Air Onsen – we enjoyed it so much, we went twice in one day! The morning visit was already amazing, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out there’s a mixed-gender session in the evening, which made the experience even more special. The view of nature surrounding the onsen was stunning, and the onsen itself is incredibly spacious – one of the largest open-air onsen we’ve been to. A must-visit if you're in Kusatsu.
Chayoot V — Google review
It was my first time visiting here! I love the wider space here but the water wasn’t that clean and a lot of mosses. I don’t think taking bath during the midafternoon is a good idea. It’s bit hot and feeling slimy due to seaweed there. Since tons of people were there, water wasn’t not clear so recommended to go there early in the morning. Water is a bit salty and a cool experience for sure but there’s no shower so be aware of that! Other than that, enjoy! Cheers 🥂
Mr. D — Google review
This is my second favourite onsen in the area. There is only one pool area so the temperature selection is limited. The further you move away from the source the less hot it is, but it's still hot everywhere you go because it's just one pool. Important to note that there is no shower or rinse off area. I highly recommend to go on a day with a mix of sun and rain. This is my favourite onsen when it's raining.
Juan M — Google review
Amazing onsen with a scenic view. There is only a locker room and a large bath (no individual showers or washing areas). I recommend preparing a 100 yen coin for the locker.
- Y — Google review
It's an outdoor hot spring with blue sky view and fresh air. When you sit in the water too long and feel too hot, you can stand up for the cold breeze. In winter, the onsen is surrounded by snow, and some of the soft snow even falls from the roof, creating an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. There's no place to shower. Bring your own towel to dry yourself.
Mason T — Google review
It cost ¥800 to enter but well worth it. There is no proper shower place just a gallon of water with some small bucket to splash yourself. Bring your own (big & small) towel. Can be purchased but more pricey. Toliets are available. The onsen is very big also the size a basketball court. Surrounded my nature its very peaceful and relaxing in this public bath. Quite a walk up to this public bath but the scenery was beautiful.

Very unique Shinto shrine in the heart of kusatsu onsens. A pleasant must visit site. Enjoy the scenic beauty and pleasant weather. You can get a good view of the onsens without the smell. So a must visit for at least that reason. The temple is really old and well preserved. A must visit

Beautiful shine a bit uphill and off the way from the town center. However, it was on route from my accommodation to the town center. It has the most beautiful cleansing booth i have seen in a long while. Very colorful and flower filled
Luke L — Google review
Small shrine tucked up above the Kusatsu town area via a long flight of stairs. The grounds are very pretty and were empty when we visited. It was peaceful. The shrine office seemed very small and was closed. The best part of this shrine were the rhododendron subg. hymenanthes flowers in full bloom (early May 2023). Goshuin are available until 4pm at a nearby restaurant if the shrine office is closed. There are four shrines in the area with goshuin, all are paper only. If you purchase all four, you get a discount. I didn't care for the designs much personally, they seemed cheap and touristy.

(Translated by Google) I went to Kusatsu Onsen on a trip. There are various activities that both adults and children can enjoy. There was no wait because I arrived before 1pm, but after that the reception area gradually became crowded. We recommend Kusatsu Onsen BanZip TENGU, which has a total length of 500m, a height difference of 108m, and a maximum speed of 70km/h. It costs 2,500 yen including the Pulse Gondola Tengu ride, but it's worth the ride. I think it's a little scary when you look down on it from above, but when you actually experience it, it feels really good. It's a little scary at the beginning and at the end, but you'll want to experience it over and over again. My daughter asked for it again, but it was a reasonable amount so she decided on something else. Then on to the mountain cart. It takes 30 minutes, but you can go back and forth about 6 to 7 times. It's surprisingly thrilling to drive at speed. It doesn't hurt if I fall, so it's not a problem. However, the pony lift when climbing can be quite painful. I think it would be difficult for heavy adults. I think if you go with your family, you will be quite satisfied. Art Cafe Kusatsu is a charming spot just a short stroll from the iconic Yubatake, making it an ideal destination for both art lovers and casual visitors. This delightful cafe not only serves up excellent coffee and delectable treats like matcha lattes and pancakes but also features an adjoining art museum dedicated to the works of Tsurutaro Kataoka, a celebrated Japanese actor and artist. The serene atmosphere invites you to unwind while enjoying views of passersby or the nearby river.
Lovely cafe with nice coffee. Cheese toast was simple but delicious. Pancake was good too. The view of watching people walking was really enjoyable.

A small museum featuring an ex-comedian Tsurutaro who spent over 30 years drawing in this region. The entrance fee could be a bit pricey for its size but this place allowed me to see a different side of the celebrity. His style is based on simplicity and is easy to understand. It would be great if it had English translation as he often incorporates poetry into his art.

The Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal serves as the gateway to this popular hot spring destination, offering convenient access from Tokyo with a 4-hour bus ride or 3-hour train journey. While it's feasible for a day trip, visitors are encouraged to consider an overnight stay to fully experience the Yubatake light-ups and "Light of Dream" shows. The terminal provides facilities such as a bus ticket office, dining options, and a waiting area.

It went relatively smoothly including explanations and I completed it in an hour, but it's best not to take it lightly. For someone who doesn't exercise regularly, it's a bit of a SASUKE. When I applied, I was imagining a mountain version of park athletics, but my arms will definitely be sore tomorrow (lol) The course is on top of a tree, so I was a little scared of the height at first, but maybe because I focused on completing the course or because I got used to the height, I no longer felt scared of the height. Of course, safety is our top priority, so the staff will not force you to do anything. You can proceed with your own choices. It is highly recommended for people who want stimulation as it allows them to experience something out of the ordinary. By the way, the master stage is quite difficult, and you have to set the lifeline on the wire yourself, so I think it's best for children in the upper grades of elementary school or above to participate. Even if an adult participates with you, each person will take turns on the tree, so you won't be able to physically stay with them. For those who are worried, you can now enjoy the Fairy Stage where you can stay safe. (Translated by Google) I didn't stay at the hotel village, but brought my junior high school girl and elementary school boy. It's a good idea to bring gloves and comfortable shoes when participating. You can buy it without it, but it's a little expensive. The location of Forest Stage is near the bathing facility of the hotel village called Therme Therme, so it's easy to find if you set it on Google Maps. There is a parking lot in front of it, and a Lawson convenience store across the street. You can easily find the Forest Garden sign from the parking lot and continue walking through the forest. If you go on the right side of Therme Therme, you will see the forest garden fairy course and the meeting place hut on the right side, and if you go straight, you will see the hotel and there is a Pikachu statue (?) at the entrance. Once inside, there is a hotel reception area and a game corner, and except for the morning, applications are made at the bowling alley reception desk. Regarding the reception process, it seems that reservations cannot be made in advance, as applications are only accepted on the day of the event. From 8:30 on the day of the event, a special reception will be set up on the garden (entrance) side of the building where the bowling alley reception is located, where you will fill out the necessary information and apply. The start time is not set immediately after applying, but is set depending on the day and is selected at the time of application. On the Saturday in October that we attended, the Fairy Course (height 140cm or less) was held every hour (9:00~, 10:00~, 11:00~, etc.), and the Master Course (height 140cm and over) was held every 2 hours ( (9:00~, 11:00~, 13:00~, etc.). Payment is made at this time, and the price is different for guests and outsiders. You can use GOTO paper coupons or electronic coupons for payment. It seems like people have to put on harnesses and prepare 15 minutes before the meeting, and the explanation starts when the time is right. Here are my impressions from my family. Junior high school girls chose the Master Course (3,800 yen), and elementary school boys chose the Fairy Course (1,800 yen). Both of them have experienced athletics wearing similar harnesses in Chiba Prefecture. The starting point of the Fairy Course was at the same height as the play equipment at a kindergarten or elementary school, or for example, about the same height as a second-floor balcony, but the elementary school boy successfully completed the Fairy Course without any hesitation. Parents are required to accompany the child, but I was fine watching from below. One staff member per group was there to give advice, so we did our best while being encouraged. At the end of the fairy course, there was a part where there was no foothold and I had to grab the harness from which I was hanging and move quickly to the next tree, and I was quite scared of that part. It seems like it would be difficult without a foothold. But somehow they managed to get over that point and seemed to enjoy the long Tarzan ride to the longest goal. There were staff here who accepted me and were kind. The problem is the master course. First, there will be an explanation for about 30 minutes. After that, in order to make the flow smoother, we will start with those who seem to be faster, such as those with experience or adults. However, my misfortune began when my junior high school girl was nominated by the staff to be number 1 because she had experience. Normally, you would gain experience by using a different route for Master Course participants in the Fairy Course (A to E Course) area, and then move on to a level course (F Course ~) that is about 3 stories high across the road. I wanted to go there, but it was crowded that day, so I skipped the Fairy Course and suddenly started on the F Course, which was as tall as a third-floor balcony. The first one was a course where the ropes were 10cm long and lined up like a skipping rope, so it was okay, but the second one suddenly had no foothold and grabbed the harness hanging me with both hands, and suddenly I felt like Tarzan. The junior high school girl was intimidated by the lack of footholds and the height, and ended up getting stranded. But instead of retiring right away, I decided to let the person behind me go ahead and observe the others before deciding whether to retire or take on the challenge. However, once I got scared, I was no longer able to do it, so I went back to the starting point, got off the ladder, and retired. Most of the adults were okay, but the other middle school age girls were too scared to take on the challenge, so they tried their best to keep up with the challenge, and the other boy ended up retiring. Therefore, if your child is a junior high school student or younger and is sensitive to heights or lacks courage, we recommend that you consult with them. I think college students and adults will probably be able to enjoy it without any problems. It happened to be a crowded day at my house, and the starting position was suddenly quite high, and the course was very difficult, like Tarzan, and since I was the first in the group, I didn't know the trick, so I thought it was scary. Maybe it was just a combination of bad luck that made me unable to do it. However, after this, I went back to the fairy course and had her do the master course within the fairy course, and let her choose at the turning point whether to proceed to the F course or finish it. I finished playing Tarzan and had a somewhat successful experience before I finished, so I was glad that the two hours ended on a fun note. According to the staff, there are many cases where children cry and cannot get off the Fairy Course, and the staff goes to help them. Both courses are high and scary, so please be careful when participating.

This is Kusatsu’s famous natural hot spring source area that’s been developed for viewing. The area has a strong boiled egg smell from the sulfur. (Translated by Google) After nearly 15 years, I drove to the highest point of Japan's National Highway 292 again. From Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture to Yudanaka Onsen in Nagano Prefecture, the journey is about 45 kilometers. The scenery of the plateau arrow bamboo and cedar forest along the way is amazing. There are also many lakes and natural trails for tourists to relax. I remember that Kusatsu Shirane Mountain Yukama was open to tourists to climb to the top to see the crater lake. The color is very blue and spectacular. Many tourists went up the mountain. My child accidentally fell and was injured at the top of the mountain. Thank you for the immediate assistance of kind people in Japan. However, the volcanic eruption in the past few years has forced the most unique volcanic geological landscape along the route to be closed due to warnings. In July 2025, when driving through this area, safety considerations prevented us from stopping and taking pictures, so I wrote an article to thank the kind people who helped us at this attraction. It's often referred to as Mount Kusatsu-Shirane to distinguish it from other Shirane mountains. It's also sometimes referred to as Mount Shirane, a collective term for the three mountains, including Ainomine and Mount Moto-Shirane, with Mount Moto-Shirane at 2,171 meters above sea level being the highest peak. However, since Mount Moto-Shirane's 2018 eruption and the resulting disaster, both Yugama and Mount Moto-Shirane are off-limits. I've visited Yugama several times before, with many visitors climbing from the parking lot of the rest house along National Route 292. Once I reached the observation deck, I remember being stunned for a moment by the mystical sight of the otherworldly white rock crater walls and the highly acidic, emerald-green lake water. Yugama was once a major tourist attraction in Kusatsu, so I'm sure many people hope it will somehow become accessible again. However, Mount Ontake, which also suffered extensive damage from the volcanic disaster, has built evacuation shelters and huts and has reopened the core area except for a few restricted areas. In contrast, if Yugama were to be reopened, I think it would be quite difficult, as it would be flooded with tourists in a much larger number than just serious Mount Ontake climbers. (Translated by Google) The remains of the Cotton Baths, the wholesale market, and a stone monument marking the confluence of the Nakasendo and Koshu Kaido roads are all located on the same premises. There are seven car parks demarcated into sections, and this is the private car park for the inn at the back, Chosenkaku Kameya. When I visited during the day there were two or three people there. A large stone ball is floating in the hot water (so hot!!) gushing out from below. If you touch it lightly the ball spins around which is interesting. The rod-like objects around it seem to act as a protective cage to stop people from playing with the ball. It looks heavy, and it would be terrible if they broke the stone and got injured. The large relief design on the Toban stone is famous. I've seen it many times. Kikyoya's name is also mentioned. From an 1802 illustrated guide to famous places along the Kiso Road, Shimo-Suwa-juku. Yasakato no Mikoto (wife), who decided to live separately from Suwa Taisha/Kamisha, where they lived together, to Suwa Taisha Shimosha, springs up in the precincts of Kamisha, which she had used every day up until then. The ``hot spring'' was poured into a bucket and soaked in ``cotton'' to prevent it from spilling on a boat trip. It is said that a ``hot spring'' gushed out from the place where the ``cotton'' was placed after getting off the boat. It is said that a wholesale store for the Nakasendo Shukuba-juku was later opened in this location, indicating that it must have been a central presence in Suwa's logistics. (Translated by Google) My life was saved because someone told me that I should bring the trekking poles that were left at the entrance. It's supposed to be only 1km long, but the slope is steeper than I expected, and the terrain is rocky underfoot, making it quite difficult to walk. No, depending on the time of year, it's more dangerous than difficult to walk. When I went there in late autumn, I felt slippery underfoot due to fallen leaves, the terrain was difficult to understand, and the roads were narrow, so I felt in danger several times. Plus, there's the fear of bears. It was thrilling. It may be fortunate that the journey is downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. You can just do your best on the way up, but if you miss a step on the way down, you'll be in trouble because the sides are even steeper. There were some parts where we had to go along ropes, but I realized the greatness of our predecessors who installed it. (I guess this won't be a problem for people who are used to mountain climbing.) It's good training for people who exercise. The waterfall itself was very beautiful and impressive. It was an elegant waterfall, but the combination of the gaping hole and the red rock surface and joint-like rock surface gave it a unique atmosphere. Due to the time of year, there was no sign of people, and I felt a sense of awe while being in nature for the first time in a while. We need places like this to remain. Even at the early winter temperature, I was sweating at the waterfall, so I recommend choosing the right time of year to go and making appropriate preparations. History Museums
The Jyu-kanbo National Museum of Detention for Hansen's Disease Patients is a significant establishment that provides valuable knowledge about the historical background of leprosy. Visitors can gain insight into the past through a guided tour, where respectful staff ensure a comfortable experience even for solo visitors. The museum exhibits various materials and visuals depicting the hardships faced by individuals afflicted with Hansen's disease, as well as the unjust discrimination they endured.
This museum provides a profound experience, shedding light on the struggles faced by those with Hansen's disease. If anyone is interested in medical history or human rights, this museum would be a must-visit. Museum Focusing on Confinement Camp of Leprosy/Hansen’s Disease Patients Admission: Free Location: Accessible from the Kusatsu Bus Terminal. Taxi fare is approximately 1600 yen one way. While walking is an option, the route is not pedestrian-friendly. Exhibition Highlights: The museum is modern with diverse exhibits. The main attraction is the replication of the Jyu Kan-bo, offering a tangible experience of the confinement prisons for leprosy patients. The replicated cells are cold and isolating, reflecting the harsh conditions faced by the patients. In the winters, the temperature can drop below minus ten degrees Celsius. Despite this, inmates had only two futons to keep them warm. Visitor Experience: The museum promises an impactful experience that deeply resonates with visitors, emphasizing the gravity and history of leprosy/Hansen’s disease and the conditions in which the affected individuals lived. The displays mentioned are just a fraction of what the museum offers. You can see the rest on site. These are just part of the exhibition. I’m sure you’ll have a impactful experience there.

I first heard about it on the sign at the exit of the bus terminal, rented a car from Toyota Car Share next to the terminal, changed my plans, and went there. It's about 15 minutes by car. It's free, but transportation is difficult. Even if you take a taxi, you will need to call one for your return trip. The content is as per the website, so I will omit it. First, we will watch a history video for about 20 minutes. The words ``Ignorance and prejudice lead to discrimination'' were memorable. Don't forget. There are people who live right outside the building, so it is important to be aware of what you say and do outside the building. Inside the museum, the staff will enthusiastically provide detailed explanations. If you look at it quickly, it will take about 30 minutes, but if you look at it carefully, it will take 2-3 hours. Why are there still sanitariums even though it is a curable disease? When I had this question, I asked the person in charge, and she explained the situation carefully. The country that took away his life, the doctors who led the charge, and the ignorant people need to reflect greatly. If posterity does not know about it, it will not be possible to reflect on it. I think the government should at least provide more free transportation and more notices to let people know. If we don't turn our eyes away from the dark history, know the truth, apply it to this world, and pass it on to future generations, it will repeat itself forever. The site is located 5 minutes away by car.

We will use the old trekking route to get to the waterfall, but the bamboo is so thick that you can't even see the road or the ground, so it's better to pass the trail except for the waterfall. The crux of the trail is from the upper part of Takishita Onsen (open air) in Tokofu, and it becomes more unclear (in my case, I went up the left bank of the stream from this open air, but it felt like a decent altitude).
