Matsumoto-jō Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a 16th-century national treasure with striking black walls. Visitors can explore historical weapons exhibits and climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and snow-capped mountains. The castle grounds are adorned with maple and cherry trees, making it a popular spot for viewing red leaves and cherry blossoms in early November. The castle offers evening lighting events until 22:00.
Gorgeous castle both in the day and at night. Suggested buying timed tickets in advance else you'll need to line up (it was 100 minutes on the day we were there), but we just walked through, scanned and were in the castle within a few minutes. Once inside its a museum of sorts with displays of weapons the castle was designed to protect against (flint lock etc) and although it was busy if you wanted to read the displays simply allow people to go ahead of you and enjoy your own pace. We really enjoyed it!
Joshua H — Google review
It is one of Japan's premier historic castles. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. Completed in the late sixteenth century, it maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is a flatland castle. Lots of people here, careful with personal belongings. Very popular place. Plenty to see inside and outside. Wear comfy shoes, hat, sunscreen, take water. While outside is even terrain and easy walking, inside you have lot of steep stairs and crowds. Headroom is limited on some stairs. Fee charged for entry. Great place for photography. Lovely museum exhibits at each level
S V — Google review
Truly a national treasure. This castle has been on my wishlist for so long. Visited on sunday 19 Oct. Even from the outer area you can feel the magnificent of this castle, beautiful and elegant castle. The stairs inside is steep and narrow, do it slowly and carefuly as to not hit your head to one of its wood beam. Also I had the chance to watched the live firearms show afterwards, its really cool, feels like going back to 1600s Sengoku jidai era. I enjoyed my visit to this castle, thank you.
Mario K — Google review
Last year, I visited Matsumoto Castle, and it was an incredible experience rich in history and culture. Standing before the majestic black-and-white fortress, I could truly feel the spirit of Japan’s samurai era. The castle’s elegant design, surrounded by a serene moat and distant mountains, creates a perfect harmony between strength and beauty. Inside, the wooden interiors and steep staircases tell stories of centuries past. It’s not just a castle—it’s a living piece of Japan’s heritage. A must-visit for anyone who loves history and tradition! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Emir K — Google review
Visually impressive from the outside, stunning architecture and layout. Dissapointingly dull on the inside! Other than a display of weapons there is precious little explanation of the castle's background, how people lived or the evolution. Very good volunteer guides but they are not allowed to enter the castle itself. Feels like a wasted opportunity for an immersive historical experience
JT — Google review
Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's oldest original castles, with its origins dating to the 16th century during the Sengoku period. It is known for its black exterior, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle," and its striking black and white architecture. While it appears to have five external stories, the interior has six, with steep, narrow stairs designed for defense. The castle was saved from demolition in the 19th century by local residents and was designated a National Treasure in 1952. We visited the castle on Friday 21st Nov., there was no queue and we didn’t book the tickets earlier. The stairs to go upstairs are quite high (40-50 cm) so keep it in mind for your visit.
Tania N — Google review
Matsumoto Castle is definitely worth going inside despite the need to queue to enter the main keep (we waited about 45 minutes). The internal stairs are very restrictive and steep, which is to be expected of an ancient castle, but the views from the top floor are amazing. I recommend booking your ticket online ahead of time to avoid the long on-the-day queue - online tickets allow you to go straight in at your allocated time. If it is busy, take your time on the stairs, allow groups to pass, and enjoy the architecture. If you collect stamps, there are a total of three: two can be found at the gate entrance after the ticket office, and one is inside the management office. Finally, if you visit during the winter, make sure to wrap up, as the castle interior is very cold.
Leo — Google review
Matsumoto Castle was a short walk from our hotel, though a local bus is also available. We bought our tickets on the spot. While there was little crowd when we arrived, it is still cheaper if you purchase tickets online in advance. As one of Japan’s few surviving original castles from the sixteenth century, Matsumoto Castle retains its authentic wooden interior. This also means there are no lifts, and visitors must remove their shoes before entering the keep. The staff provide a plastic bag for you to carry your shoes. Inside, expect many narrow and steep staircases as you make your way up and down the different floors. Before entering the keep, the castle grounds have a spacious resting area with numerous vending machines, ideal for a short break. A well preserved piece of history, worth the visit.

Museums
The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a must-visit landmark in the city, alongside the famous Matsumoto Castle. This museum is dedicated to artists associated with Nagano Prefecture and offers an immersive experience into the world of Yayoi Kusama, a renowned contemporary artist born in Matsumoto. Even before entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the impressive outdoor sculpture 'The Visionary Flowers,' which leaves a lasting impression.
I truly enjoyed my time at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. The museum is located in the city center, just a few minutes’ walk from Matsumoto Castle and Matsumoto City Museum – making all combined a great day-trip itinerary coming from Tokyo. In this museum I first learn that Yayoi Kusama is originally from Matsumoto. The museum itself is designed in Kusama’s spirit with her art at the front of the museum and her famous red dots covering the windows. The museum has a number of floors, mostly showing local / other art by different artists. The highlight for me was Kusama’s special gallery at the top floor – taking the visitor on a journey through Kusama’s life, and the different phases she went through and created in. The gallery showed beautiful art created by Kusama across different genres (paintings, statues, mirror-rooms and more). Lastly, the museum also has an external garden where you can sit and relax during your visit to the venue. Overall, this is a great museum and I had a great time visiting it and learning more about Matsumoto and specifically about Kusama. I highly recommend to visit this place when you visit Matsumoto.
Adam S — Google review
A small but very beautiful museum with a collection of art from Yayoi Kusama herself. While you can’t take photos inside (except for one area), the grounds themselves are beautiful with a cafe and an amazing gift shop. I highly recommend it if you have 1-2 hours to spare.
Moriah — Google review
Great experience for the work of Yayoi Kusama. The museum is recommended as the best place in Japan to witness Yayoi's work (Matsumoto is her place of birth). The interactive part is memorable (photos and videos not allowed in these rooms, hence no media added to my post on these aspects). I would say 30-60min are enough to visit the museum - there are some other areas besides Yoyoi's rooms. I would have liked more Yayoi's merchandise in the shop. Definitely a must-see in Matsumoto!
Japonaisseur — Google review
Great for Yayoi Kusama Fans, but a small museum. We came specifically to see the permanent Yayoi Kusama collection, which is excellent (don't miss the stunning outdoor pieces!). The entrance fee is very reasonable/affordable. However, the overall museum space is quite small. The exhibition area is limited, so there isn't a huge amount of content to see outside of the main Kusama works. It's a quick visit, but definitely worth it if you are a fan of her art!
Awanafan — Google review
Well worth visiting for the Yusama exhibits and installations alone. JPY800 to enter and they have a great gift shop and cafe too. There are not many places within the gallery that you can take photos, but that doesn’t really matter as it’s a memorable experience.
Lex L — Google review
So fun to see the museum that honors Kusama. We were just in Naoshima 10 days ago, home to her yellow pumpkin and hollow red pumpkin. The installations she created at this museum are extraordinary. There was also a fabulous exhibition of Japanese contemporary artists that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Annabel G — Google review
Not that big exhibition but yayoi kusama’s work is so colorful and nice. I recommended here for yayoi kusama fan and the one who really into art. I went there on weekday, so there is no line and can purchase the ticket at the ticket counter.
Mook C — Google review
The exhibition is quite limited. Nothing much to see. Just some mirror tricks mostly. Probably finish in 20 mins. 800 yen entrance fee. Photos are prohibited inside except that pumpkin

Farm
Nestled in Azumino, Japan, Daio Wasabi Farm is a sprawling 15-hectare wasabi farm that has been operating since 1915. It draws in approximately 1.1 million visitors annually with its picturesque landscape featuring large wasabi fields irrigated by pristine water from the Northern Alps.
We really enjoyed our visit here. We took a ride on the clear-bottom boat — a fantastic experience cruising over the river, and well worth the ¥1,400 per person. It was fascinating to see how wasabi is grown directly in the river from a hot spring source. We also tried ice cream topped with fresh wasabi, it is surprisingly delicious! There were plenty of local snacks available too, perfect for taking home or enjoying on the go. Highly recommended!
Anson A — Google review
This is the first wasabi farm I’ve visited. As with other places on interest in Japan, Daio Wasabi Farm did not disappoint and I was fascinated with the history, stories and wasabi farming processes. If anything else, it’s a nice, peaceful place for a leisurely walk or to relax. The farm is surrounded by sceneries of beautiful mountains. The cafes served up very decent food and drinks. There were many choices of snacks and wasabi products to purchase as souvenirs. Please visit this gem of a place but please leave nothing but footprints!
Jaclyn L — Google review
The Daio Wasabi Farm is absolutely beautiful — the scenery is stunning and peaceful, with clear streams running through the fields and lovely walking paths all around. The restaurant is also a great experience: the rice set with your own fresh wasabi root to grate is both fun and delicious. A perfect stop to enjoy nature and try something unique to Japan.
N M — Google review
Lovely. I recommend on taking bikes from the near town and ride through the fields - it’s gorgeous! For wasabi lovers the local shop is amazing, they has some really good wasabi based foods :) Try the smoked cheese with wasabi it was the best thing we ate there. Wasabi ice ream was also fun.
Lotem A — Google review
Dario Wasabi Farm is a large majestic space in rural Azumino city only short train ride from Matsumoto. There is no entrance fee to walk along the paths around the farm, People stroll with family members or a pet amongst trees, a water wheel, with the constant flow of mountain water that flows amongst the wasabi plants which are under a black tarp to keep them cool while they grow. The 17C degree water and cool breezes cultivates the wasabi plants which you see in several fields around the property. If a day out in the fresh air and the taste of spice pleases you, then this is the place to go.
Cami H — Google review
The farm is very huge and accessible to everyone with no entry fee which is very good. Even though there is no public transport you can take taxi from nearest station and also get the taxi number to call from the Wasabi farm. The farm can also help call a taxi for you to your nearest station or destination. It’s fascinating to see how wasabi grows and it needs fresh spring running water all the time and the farm maintains and regulates the fresh water stream for wasabi. Also there are lots of good items based on wasabi that you can enjoy and fresh fruit juice available when we visited. Overall it was a good experience if you are interested in farming activities.
Deepthi R — Google review
There isn't a lot to do, but it's a cool place with no entrance fee. It was the first time I'd gotten to see wasabi plants in person. The air felt very fresh and it wasn't crowded at all, so it was nice to walk around. It has a big souvenir shop and a couple cafes. The wasabi ice cream was interesting, but it tasted basically like vanilla. However, the fresh wasabi on top was very strong. Again, not worth a full day trip but nice to stop by for a couple hours.
Lesley — Google review
A pain in the butt to get to (a train runs from Matsumoto like once every 3 hours). But free to enter with a ton of beautiful scenery and so interesting seeing how the Wasabi is grown. I don't recommend the Wasabi ice cream (not to my taste) but I do highly recommend visiting.

The Matsumoto Timepiece Museum is a contemporary gallery that houses an extensive collection of working clocks and watches from various time periods. Established in 1974 with a donation of antique clocks and timepieces, the museum offers an introduction to the history of watches and showcases over a thousand timepieces dating back to the sixteenth century.
My interest in watches and clock bought me to this place. I like the collections and how it was presented. Thank you.
Alfred P — Google review
A very interesting place, especially if you're into clocks. It's a small but well-maintained collection of clocks, as well as exhibits that go over the history of timekeeping. The clocks are organized by both historical era and area of origin.
Edwin L — Google review
This is a small but very charming museum for anyone interested in timepieces in general and the history of Japanese clocks in particular. Exhibits range from watches to very large clocks, with quite a few very distinctive and quirky examples. There is also a room of phonographs. I enjoyed this immensely - particularly the sound to ticking, because all the clocks seemed to be working. Great value!
Sean W — Google review
Cute little museum with some interesting history and many well preserved (and functional!) watches and clocks from various periods.
Josh F — Google review
Nice and cozy small clocks and watches museum. You can spend time approx 30-60 min here. Enjoy seeing the many types of clocks and watches here.
Gorawich K — Google review
We went there on a rainy day. It’s small but worth the fees. Worth a visit for those interested in clocks and watches. Almost all the exhibits are working and there are some truly interesting pieces with gramophone live session.
Mugdha G — Google review
Interesting place to add to your Matsumoto itinerary. You could spend more or less an hour here before heading to Matsumoto Castle. You can see interesting clocks and most have English descriptions on them. I think all of the time pieces are still working. So you'll definitely learn something to your visit here
Frances Y — Google review
Sweet little museum in Matsumoto. Make sure you get inside 10-15 minutes before round hour, because most clocks here ring! Some of the special ones do really weird things, so make sure to look around and go around between them when they ring.

Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a small traditional religious shrine that is a popular destination for viewing colorful autumn foliage. The shrine is located along Frog Street, named after the Kajika frogs that used to inhabit the Metoba River. The street is adorned with ceramics and signboards depicting these amphibians, paying homage to their legacy in the area. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere of the shrine and take in the surrounding natural beauty, including nearby rivers and vibrant foliage.
Very serene Shinto shrine in the middle of the busy Matsumoto city. You can catch locals on their way passing through the shrine for a quick prayer or a quick pause. Beautifully lit in the evening too and there is a fun artisan shopping and streetfood street just south of the shrine.
Sam B — Google review
Having enjoyed a lovely stroll along Frog Street, you might come across a beautiful shrine nestled along the way. It tends to be less crowded, particularly if you visit during the week. The grounds are wonderfully laid out, and the atmosphere is exceptionally peaceful. If you happen to be in the vicinity, a visit to pay your respects would certainly be worthwhile.
Matthew C — Google review
Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a peaceful spot near Nawate Street in Matsumoto, built in 1879 and dedicated to four major Shinto deities, rare for a shrine. “Yohashira” means “four pillars,” referring to these gods. Despite its central location, it’s surprisingly quiet and calm. There's also a “Matchmaking Pine,” symbolising connection. A nice place to take a breather away from the crowd.
Melvin J — Google review
Very cool Shinto Shrine. Many other smaller shrines here too. Well kept and visited my many.
Daniel S — Google review
Yohashira-jinja Shrine (四柱神社) is an absolutely serene and beautiful place to visit! Nestled in the heart of Matsumoto, this shrine is rich in history and cultural significance. The grounds are well-maintained, and the atmosphere is peaceful, making it a perfect spot for reflection or simply enjoying the tranquil surroundings. The architecture of the shrine is impressive, and the attention to detail in the carvings and structures is a testament to its cultural heritage. The nearby river and surrounding trees add to the charm, especially during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage. What stood out to me the most was the friendly and welcoming staff. They made the experience even more special. Don't forget to try your luck with the omikuji fortunes or participate in a prayer ritual! Whether you're a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or just someone who appreciates natural beauty, Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
Elias ( — Google review
I stopped by here around mid-July 2023. The shrine is pretty close to Matsumoto Castle and you can get to it easily by walking through Nawate Shopping Street.

As the name suggests, the Yohashira Shrine enshrines four gods of Japanese mythology. It is locally famous, especially for fulfilling business and matchmaking. Paid parking is available on the east side of the shrine.

The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, located in Matsumoto City, is home to a vast and significant collection of ukiyo-e artworks. Many of these pieces are currently on display at a special exhibition hosted by the Matsumoto City Museum. The museum features works by renowned artist Hokusai Katsushika, including famous pieces like The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
Like many messages said here, this is not a big museum or a big gallery. Many art works were not even the original one. But, the visitors all seemed to enjoy their staying. They paid attention to these paintings quietly. Also, you can find English description in most paintings, covering not only the name of the painting, but also the story of the painting.
CS K — Google review
This museum is tough to recommend for its normally displayed collection, which is tiny (by tiny, I mean 30 pieces max). It's also not easy to get to, being a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest train station and buses aren't much better. As such, if you're going to visit I recommend seeing what the special collection is that they have on display - their special collections take up their main display room, which is 3x the size of the rest of the museum. If the special collection is not to your taste, I would not recommend visiting. If it is however (or if you have access to a car and can make the journey without depending on the limited public transit options, it is a charming building with a very good gift shop - there are a number of prints done via woodblock techniques if you're looking for one (plus a lot of other ukiyo-e-related gifts that I haven't seen anywhere else in Japan). In the end I'll give it four stars for the quality of their special collection curation, the format shop, and decent AC on a hot day... just be warned it might not tick all of your ukiyo-e boxes.
G. C — Google review
Excellent little museum with a peerless collection of ukiyo-e prints and a solid gift shop. Good explanatory video running and helpful staff. The pieces in show are low in number due to the size of the gallery and to help conserve them due to light/oil exposure. TIP: transit does not easily get you here without a car. Use Uber or equivalent to get legit taxis to and from!
Phil S — Google review
Very nice museum and the walk from the train station is peaceful and beautiful in itself worth the trip. If you appreciate traditional Japanese art worth a stop. There's a 30 min video supposedly available also in English explaining how wood prints are made, just watching the craftsmanship was super interesting
Maya S — Google review
Small but informative. There's a video covering the process and a little of the history, and then a room with a collection of prints with information in English and Japanese. A shuttle bus runs to and from the area on the alps side of Matsumoto JR station and there are two train lines within walking distance.
Kai D — Google review
The museum looks big from the outside, but it's just one room with maybe 150 or so works. The exhibit is rotated often. If it wasn't for the 500 yen student ticket, I would be a little annoyed at the price.
Max K — Google review
Hard to recommend a visit to this museum: it's quite hard to get to without a car / taxi, and it's deceptively small. The exhibit was interesting, but we felt it lacked displays of the unique & elaborate process & equipment behind Ukiyo-e.

Former Kaichi School, built in 1876, is one of Japan's oldest elementary school buildings and now serves as an education museum. The Western-influenced design with Japanese elements like the roof over the main entrance and dragon carvings make it a unique sight. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring old artworks, chairs, tables, and other educational artifacts from the Edo period to modern times for a glimpse into Japan's educational history.
I think whether a place is a city of culture or not depends on the type of lord who ruled it in the past. I think the reason why Matsumoto, Nagano has such high academic ability is because the lord originally believed that "education is important." Education is the most important thing in life as a human being.

As western people, this was les interesting. This school is built according to Western architecture, but with the building techniques they were familiar with. You learn a lot about the architecture of the building and you can feel how proud people are and were with the building, but I was hoping to learn more about the school system and educational methods. Also not everything was in English, we had to use Google translate a lot. Definitely take a sweater here because it is quite cold inside. We went in spring.

A historical place where the European missionaries setup school for the local children. The architecture is a mixture of European design with some Asian sculptures. The school is temporary closed for refurbishment. It's next to the local central library and a short walk from the castle.

It was interesting to see and read about the history of the school and the building. As I am a foreign tourist, I would have appreciated more descriptions in English.

Really interesting historic building right in Matsumoto close to the castle. There isn't a huge amount of English but it seemed that the key points of the building and materials were translated into English as well which was very helpful. The building itself is a beautiful combination of Japanese construction and western aesthetics that makes for a really interesting tour around the school. They do make you take off your shoes and put on school slippers, just a heads up.

Kamikochi is a picturesque valley and national park known for its abundant wildlife, including monkeys, deer, bears, and various bird species like the raicho. The area also offers hiking opportunities such as the Mount Yarigatake course, which leads to the summit of the fifth highest mountain in Japan.
Kamikochi bus terminal with a large parking lot for buses and taxis. It has a few boarding points and #4 bay is for the bus back to Matsumoto. Has benches to rest while waiting for the bus. The tourist center is just next door as well as restroom, souvenir shop, food stall selling soft serve ice cream and curry bread. There are restaurants and shops upstairs. Drinking water refill tap is on the plaza.

This street is just a few minutes walk from the 'frog street'. Kinda similar vibe except that the building designs are traditional storehouses. because cars are still allowed to drive in, the walking path at the side feels narrow to me. recommend to skip if you have limited time in Matsumoto.

A nice shopping street close to Matsumoto castle. Better than Nawate-Dori in my opinion. There are a number of antique, gift and food shops along the street, all unique and a little more sophisticated/higher quality than the usual tourist gift shops. You can even follow in the footsteps of John Lennon and grab a Royal Vanilla ice cream. Personally, I preferred the crème brûléed sweet potato.

Matsumoto City Museum is a modern museum located within the grounds of Matsumoto Castle Park. The museum features a permanent collection by renowned local artist Yayoi Kusama and other artists from the area. It showcases the history, events, and traditions of Matsumoto through exhibitions about the city's origins and ancient artifacts dating back to 3000 B.C. Despite its relatively small size, the museum offers an interesting insight into the city's rich history and culture.
I truly enjoyed my time at the Matsumoto City Museum on my day-trip from Tokyo. The museum is located just 6-8 minutes’ walk from Matsumoto Castle and is a must see when you’re in town. The building itself looks like an architectural gem, with modern and Japanese designs both on the exterior and the interior of the structure. The indoor space is spacious and beautifully designed, worthy a trip just on its own. The exhibitions are great as well, with the main exhibition being the permanent one, showing the roots of Matsumoto and all the things that the city is known for. The city model exhibited in the permanent exhibition is amazing and the attention to detail is incredible. Unfortunately, when I visited the museum, the other gallery was closed temporarily but I would still highly, highly recommend visiting this museum when you are in town.
Adam S — Google review
A small regional museum detailing the history of Matsumoto, Nagano. Permanent exhibition is on the top floor. The model of the city is very impressive and detailed. The architecture in this building is stunning. Displays all had English translations and I spent about an hour here reading all the displays on level 3. I was hoping for a bit of information on the prehistory/natural history of the area (how it was underwater. whale fossils etc) but that may be the subject of a future exhibit perhaps. Small gift shop in lobby.
Timeshare C — Google review
Very quiet museum, tickets are very affordable. 1 level of permanent exhibition and 1 level of special exhibition, we got to see all kinds of katanas. The permanent exhibition was about the history of matsumoto which was a samurai town, quite interesting. Not very big but worth the visit if you like to learn more about local culture and history.
Si F — Google review
A beautiful, engaging museum in Matsumoto near the Castle — especially for fans of contemporary Japanese art and local culture. There are 2 parts - the free area and the paid ticket for the permanent displays. The layout is thoughtful, the galleries feel bright and modern, and the highlight was definitely the Kusama exhibit with her iconic polka dots and immersive installations. There are few programs (in Japanese) that go on the conference rooms. There is also a cafe and kids play area in the 1st floor.
Satish S — Google review
The building it's beautiful. The exposition about Matsumoto is good, but the temporary exposition about Japanese swords was great. A pity that you can't take pictures of the swords. The upper floor has large Matsumoto city a scale.

This is the museum of the city of Matsumoto. It’s modern, very quiet and well organized. The exhibition is not really big, but worth a visit: everything is well explained and displayed. There is also a little cafeteria, toilets, lockers and a playroom for the kids.
Tania N — Google review
Here as a tourist, and came across a poster for the Japanese sword exhibit. So, I took myself to the City museum for a couple of hours. The sword exhibit was beautiful, and informative. There was plenty of space to move around. There were many things that could not be photographed, but these were well marked. I enjoyed this exhibit, along with the regular museum exhibits. Found the gift shop to be nicely varied in its offerings and I was able to find several good things. Of note, in one corner you can buy a medallion (a few choices) and have your name and date engraved on it as a nice souvenir of your visit to the museum and Matsumoto.

From traditional Japanese crafts to hidden views and shrines, this quaint post town has something for everyone to appreciate.
Came here early morning by local train, it was really quiet and peaceful before all the stores open, you get to walk around and take photos all you like. The village vibe is just so peaceful and the air is so fresh and crisp in the morning, it feels good to just walk and explore what is in the back alleys. If you enjoy exploring small towns or villages, this place would be awesome. There are also some souvenir stores which sell locally made handicraft items and some local snacks and delicacies as well. A half day visit is perfect to explore the whole area at a very leisure pace.

We stopped by in the afternoon while driving through from Lake Suwa, en route to Nagoya. We enjoyed strolling through this rustic historic town, superbly preserved since the Edo period. The souvenir shops, restaurants and minshuku are worth exploring. We sampled some of the snacks and sake, and walked along the river and enjoyed stepping onto the timber bridge -Kiso Ohashi This bridge crosses the Narai River, which runs parallel to the main street. Extending 30 meters, it is one of the longest wooden bridges in Japan. It was built quite recently, in the 1990s. Our only regret is that we were a bit early for the glorious autumn colours as we were there in mid-October.
Jeremy W — Google review
Wonderful place to visit although the P&P crowd (photo and pee) who stops here between train hours from-to Nagoya and Nagano can make it too touristy certain times of the day. If your schedule allows, stay overnight in one the inns ( we stayed in one right in the middle of town and it was fabulous). This way you can stroll through town during peaceful times in the evening and early morning when everything is closed and quiet. During the day you can enjoy going in and out of the shops and enjoying various snacks. See the place before it turns into a total tourist trap, which it's rapidly headed towards.
Yobo S — Google review
We visited Narai-juku and found it to be a charming and very photogenic spot. The preserved street has a wonderful historical atmosphere and is great for strolling and taking pictures. The only downside is that most shops and cafés close quite early, so there wasn’t much open later in the day. Still, it’s definitely worth a visit for the scenery and the unique vibe.
Noam D — Google review
We came here early, around 9am, by car to wander through town for an hour. At that time, it was still very quiet with barely anyone out on the streets. The tranquility almost teleports you back to the Edo period. The idyllic landscape of autumn trees in the background makes the whole place look like a painting. PS: There are many parking lots scattered across town. It'll cost you 500 yen.
Ilse E — Google review
The town itself is beautifully preserved and charming. However, when we came, it was completely empty and almost shops were closed, which unfortunately made the long drive feel less worthwhile. We hiked the Torii Pass, it was a pleasant walk, but not spectacular enough to justify the trip alone.

We arrived a bit late around 2:15pm and lots of the restaurants were closed already but the area itself was nice and clean. Locals live there and they opened the store on the ground floor. The view is amazing especially in autumn and could imagine during winter it must be a magical sightings.

For reference i travaled here on may 21st. If you are driving from Takayama/Gifu you need to park you are in Honokidaira bus terminal. Amazing experience, but i was totally unprepared for the challenge and amount of snow you ll encounter. Bus from Honokidaira will take you to Tatamidaira at 2700m, which is the highest bus stop in Japan ( check when the service resume, but it's usually mid May ). If you want to get to the top of mt Norikura make sure to have proper boots, pants and walking poles. It's been great, breathtaking view and very few people at this time of the year. The snowall was still roughly 5meters high, and you can really walk next to it

Made it to the peak — and it was absolutely worth it! The view of the Alps was stunning. The hike from the hut to the peak takes about an hour, though the trail has lots of loose rocks, so be careful along the way. If you’re not a fan of hiking, you can still enjoy the picturesque scenery near the bus station. It’s also a popular cycling route up to that point. From Takayama, it takes two bus rides to get here, both offering scenic views throughout the journey.

This mountain claims to have the highest bus station stop in Japan. I came here by bus from Kamikochi. The day was misty-rainy and very unpredictable, so bring your rainwear. Visitors can also explore nearby Nakamichi street with its traditional storehouse buildings from the Edo period.
If you love frog decorations, this is a great street to explore and buy souvenirs and frog decorations. It's a street with several shops and some cafes. Nawate Shopping Street is a charming and nostalgic little stretch right by the Metoba River in Matsumoto. It’s not a long street, but it’s packed with character — perfect for a leisurely stroll. The atmosphere is quaint, with small, locally owned shops selling traditional snacks, handmade crafts, antiques, and quirky frog-themed souvenirs (a fun nod to the street’s frog mascot). You’ll also find a few cozy cafes and sweet shops where you can stop for a quick bite or soft serve ice cream. It’s a nice place to explore before or after visiting Matsumoto Castle, which is just a short walk away. While it’s more of a cultural experience than a shopping spree, the street offers a glimpse into old-town Japan with a relaxed and friendly vibe.

Visited Nawate Shopping Street on a Monday afternoon, but most of the shops were closed, not sure if it was because of the rain or just a quiet day. Soba noodle shop
Noodle shop
Restaurant
Kobayashi Soba is a laid-back restaurant with a cozy ambiance, renowned for its hot and cold soba noodle dishes. Despite its prestigious clientele, the prices are surprisingly reasonable, offering sets for under 2,000 yen featuring handmade noodles and various toppings like fresh tempura or local vegetables. The traditional cold Zaru soba served in red boxes is a must-try.
The Tempura Soba and Tamago were amazing! I have never been a fan of cold noodles, but this has changed my outlook on Soba entirely. The sauce was flavourful, rich, yet still light and refreshing, the noodles al dente, and the tempura batter was crisp and thin. The portions are very generous, and 3 sets were enough for our group of 4 ladies. Was there on a Monday afternoon around 2pm and waited for ~20 mins to be seated. It was a nice and cooling wait, and staff were very patient and helpful, and could communicate with us in English. Will highly recommend as a must-eat in Matsumoto!
Seetha S — Google review
A delicious bowl of soba begins with perfectly cooked buckwheat noodles — firm yet tender, carrying that subtle earthy aroma unique to soba. The experience doesn’t end when the noodles are gone. The owner introduce soba-yu — the hot water used to boil the soba — is poured into the remaining dipping sauce or broth. This transforms the concentrated sauce into a mellow, nourishing soup, allowing you to savor every drop of its delicate depth.
SC L — Google review
Famous soba spot in Matsumoto with long queues but totally worth it! The noodles were tasty and the tempura shrimp was huge and crispy. They only take cash, and we were short about 500 yen, but the owner kindly said it was okay not to pay the rest. (We still went to withdraw money and paid because they were just so kind.) Such a heartwarming experience!

Wonderful soba in Matsumoto! We were seated pretty quickly despite not having any reservation. The broth was super flavorful, perfect for winter. Amazing service as japanese standards. Recommended if you're in Matsumoto.

Great food and lovely staff. Big portions and very tasty. Crispy tempura, no oily taste. The horse meat wasn’t gamey at all, and I could eat it even though I don’t usually eat raw food. The roasted duck was delicious even the veggies were great!
BUDSARA N — Google review
Tasty soba in a nice restaurant! When I came to Kobayashi Soba on a Monday afternoon I had to wait for a while to get seated since this place seems to be quite popular with tourists, but I was happy I did. My tempura soba set was quite delicious and I would happily wait for it again. I also appreciated the complimentary barley tea outside-- it was a great thing to have while waiting in the hot summer weather! If you're craving a good cold soba set then you won't go wrong by choosing Kobayashi Soba.
Cam W — Google review
Tourists seems to like this place. Unfortunately the soba was too light in taste. 2200 yen felt expensive for some Tenpura and few bland soba. Nothing set this place apart from other tourist spots. I am ok to pay for quality but not tourist trap. Cash only accepted.
Mike G — Google review
The long line confirmed it’s a popular spot! Overall, the food was clean and well-prepared. The handmade soba noodles were a bit plain for my taste, but maybe it’s just because Koreans tend to prefer a chewier texture—or maybe it’s just my personal preference. I took my elderly parents, and they enjoyed it, which was reassuring. I’d definitely recommend it!

Norikura Kogen is a picturesque nature spot that offers a variety of activities such as hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, and even a small ski resort. Located in the North Japan Alps, it is easily accessible from Matsumoto and serves as a gateway to other nearby attractions like Kamikochi and Takayama. The area boasts stunning natural landscapes with opportunities for short or long hikes, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
We booked in at Raicho Inn at Norikura Kogen to experience three things. An Onsen stay in the mountains, the Kamicochi snow shoe hike tour and a snowy winter experience. It was truly special. It snowed a lot so was stunningly pretty, the onsen experience was wonderful as a result and the hike was magic. We also hiked to a frozen waterfall nearby without snow shoes. Such a fun day and a funny, wonderful experience, at times sinking up to our thighs in the snow. We had so much fun staying here. We loved it. Loved being away from the business of the big cities.

Matsumoto Karaage Center is a popular restaurant located above the Matsumoto station, known for its delicious sanzokuyaki chicken. The English menu makes it easy for international visitors to order. The karaage is described as crunchy, juicy, and flavorful, served with crispy cabbage and Japanese mayonnaise on the side. Despite initial skepticism based on reviews, visitors were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and satisfying meal.
There are all delicious!!! The fried chicken dishes are crispy and moist. I love it. Fried chicken and beer are the best combination in the world 😌💛 There’s only 1-2 staffs for service in queue and order. Please wait a little if you come in rush hour.

Good fried chicken over rice. Come before 6pm, definitely will need to queue
Gabriel C — Google review
Conveniently located on the 4th floor of the Matsumoto Train Station. Menu has only a few options, but whatever is there is great! The karaage is fantastic - batter is light and cripsy and the chicken is sooo tender and juicy. And the rice was really fluffy and addictive! Best to arrive really early because of limited seating and also long queues due to popularity. They close at 8 sharp; last order is at 7.30 and payment has to be made by 7.50pm - so it can be rushed for latecomers. They do takeaways too.

You could enjoy Matsumoto famous dish "山賊燒" here! You could choose different sauces to try with the fried chicken! Yummy!

The two-style chicken menus were delicious, offering a tasty flavor and crispy texture while keeping the meat juicy. Various sauces were available on the table. Additionally, the all-you-can-eat pickled bean sprouts were very yummy. However, when it comes to the service, it was a little uncomfortable. I arrived there around 6:30 PM and joined the queue around 7 PM. While I was eating, I felt like the staff really wanted to go home because they came and looked at me many times, and not just one staff, but all of them. They did this to many tables around me as well.

(Translated by Google) Jorin-ji is a Jodo sect temple that is a subsidiary temple of Chion-in in Kyoto, and is located along the Metoba River in the middle of Ise-cho, near Matsumoto Castle. Although it is currently located in the downtown area, during the Edo period it was housed in a townhouse where merchants and craftsmen lived. Jorin-ji Temple dates back to the Middle Ages, and is said to be the founding temple of the Ogasawara clan in the Middle Ages. During the reign of Yasunaga Ishikawa, it became a family temple and a mausoleum was also built. Hidemasa Ogasawara, who entered the castle after Yasunaga Ishikawa became a feudal lord, donated 10 koku of temple land to the castle, and since then it has received the deep faith of successive lords of the castle. During the Edo period, it was a large temple in the Matsumoto region with subsidiary temples Joun-ji, Kerin-ji, Josho-ji, and Zenryu-ji. At that time, there was a temple area on the east side compared to today, and it was adjacent to the west side of Zenkyu-in, which was the family temple of the Toda family. The temple was abandoned due to the Haibutsu-kishaku movement in the early Meiji era, but was later rebuilt. Currently, the main hall is the old Kannon-do Hall, and the main temple gate and bell tower built in the Edo period remain. ~Reprinted from the homepage. The brewery also features a shop where visitors can sample and purchase various miso products.
Super worth to come here. Here the big boss guides you personally on a short but very informative and fun tour. Joined the free Miso brewery tour and had lunch here. Miso gyoza and pork miso soup for lunch was delicious! We loved the gyoza. Oh the Miso ice cream was oishi too. Complimentary miso soup is given after the tour which is such a nice touch. We ended up buying 3 containers of 3 year aged miso. No reservations was needed on the day we visited. Visited on a weekday 15/04/2025. However, note that we did have to ask around quite a bit because there was no clear structure of where to go for the lunch and tour. We had to ask the staff repeatedly before being guided to the lunch area - tatami room and also ask around before being informed that the tour is starting soon and everyone was already in the waiting room. Although we asked ahead of time, we were repeatedly asked to wait but unsure where to wait. I think they can improve on their organisation because the food and tour is really great!

We booked a tour at Ishii Miso Factory in Matsumoto and had a great experience. The factory is about 15 minutes from Matsumoto Station and offers English tours led by the owner himself. He gave an excellent explanation of the miso-making process while showing us the traditional storage rooms. We also got to taste freshly made miso soup and enjoyed the lunch option, which included a delicious meal featuring miso dishes. At the end, we received a gift bag with a T-shirt, a branded apron and a can of miso to take home. Excellent value for money and a very enjoyable way to learn more about one of Japan’s essential ingredients.

A definite must do when visiting Matsumoto. This is one of the oldest miso business making miso in the traditional manner. They are 1% of the traditional makers and 66% of the market share. The miso is amazing. You get to tour the facility for free and get a small bowl of miso soup to taste. You can also stay for lunch. They only serve certain things for walk in diners, but the lunch area is lovely and the staff is genuine in providing a nice meal. We had the miso soup (more fancy that the tasting) and two different types of rice balls. What was fabulous were the two types of miso. Seriously I could eat the lighter one as a barbecue sauce on everything. FACTS: there are only two English tours - 11am and 1:30pm. Don’t bother to come early. If you want a tour and a full meal service (way more variety and in different seating areas -sure they are all great), make your reservations at least two (2) days ahead. Last fact - enjoy while you’re there because they don’t let you take it out of the country. Go! So worth it.

This miso store has a free factory tour that you can make reservation for, which is conducted in a few different languages as well. Their lunch set is worth trying because the miso paste is so good when used in cooking. Even the dessert in the lunch set is a miso jelly which is surprisingly refreshing and taste good too. There's a souvenir store where you can buy their products and delivery it to anywhere within japan too. There's a miso soft serve which I did not try, but I guess it is also popular. The staff here are really friendly and is experienced dealing with tourists.

We were very lucky to get lunch at the restaurant after the tour without a reservation. Maybe because it’s Tuesday today, there’s no other people. To tour Ishii miso factory is one of the most fun activities we had in our Matsumoto trip. Ishii Miso provides free tour and free miso soup tasting without reservation. We tried to make reservations for lunch at the day before the tour, but the earliest availability is a few days later. So make sure to book reservations as early as possible if you are interested to try lunch there. We bought some miso paste and snacks. Don’t miss their miso ice cream. They are so good!!! Tastes like sea salt caramel. It has good balance of sweetness to allow you taste the miso flavor. Wish we could find miso ice cream at more places.

Kamikōchi is a picturesque alpine valley located in the Japanese Alps, known for its forested national park and hiking trails. The area is famous for its stunning views and offers lodging options for visitors. Nearby attractions include the World Heritage-listed villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, as well as historic destinations like Matsumoto Castle and post towns of the Nakasendo.
We visited Kamikōchi and everything was simply breathtaking. The entire process was smooth and effortless — we arrived by car, were quickly guided to the parking area, and from there took the bus into the nature reserve. Everything was organized with the kind of speed and efficiency that only Japan delivers. The scenery itself was stunning, and we enjoyed every moment of our visit. Highly recommended — both for nature lovers and even for those who aren’t usually into hiking or the outdoors.

Truly the the nature and the atmosphere is so beautiful. The autumn colours are just started so you will find leaves in all the colours. It was pretty cold in the early morning (till 11:00). The food is pretty good and I really enjoyed the curry bun. They have facilities in the main attractions. You don’t find any garbage bins even at the shops so it’s better to carry a cover with you.

Very beautiful place. I didn't manage to catch the peak of the autumn foliage in early October but there was some parts that turned colour and the blend of colours was beautiful too. Cool weather was nice for a hike. Many monkeys around who were absolutely not afraid of humans, just living their lives as if we are invisible, quite a fun sight to see.

This national park is beautiful. Suites everybody including small children and elderly people. We did the 9.2 km hike and there were some nice views. It's easy to walk. You can choose to hike there if you prefer. We started the walk early so we met a lot of people when we finished. The park is so large that there are trails in which I imagin you don't meet a lot of people. The entrance is banned for private cars so you have to park in a designated parking and take a bus from there and back. The bus can be busy so take it into consideration
Cynthia G — Google review
So beautiful I could cry! It was out of a dream, literally! Do yourself a favor and check the weather before making your bus reservation. We were there when it was sunny and it made everything so much better! Do walk around if you fancy but the view and scenery from kappa bashi bridge was just as beautiful
Supisa K — Google review
It was breathtakingly beautiful, with crystal-clear rivers, majestic peaks, and peaceful forest trails. A perfect escape into nature, offering serene walks, stunning views, and an unforgettable mountain atmosphere. However a lot depends on your luck due to weather. The weather changes frequently and clouds may ruin your view. We were fortunate to have a good view with few cloud cover so better to check weather in advance. You can go till Sawando bus terminal using your own car. After that you will have take the local bus or taxi as private cars as prohibited there. There are lots of paid parking spots in Sawando. Overall - Great experience with wonderful journey.

Kamikochi National Park is absolutely breathtaking. We visited in November, taking the first bus of the morning, and it was very cold at the start. We walked all the way to Tokusawa and back to the main parking area, about 14 km in total. As the day went on, the temperature improved, and the further we went, the fewer people we saw, making the experience truly spectacular. We didn’t see any bears, thankfully, but we did spot some monkeys. The scenery takes your breath away.
N M — Google review
Really touristy but nice valley. There are plenty of rest stops with food and restrooms along the way. Views are great! Beware that bear danger is a thing and you should come prepared. Most people hike 5km loop so it becomes way less crowded if you go further. Best way to wnjoy this place is multi day hikes tho.

Matsumoto Station serves as a starting point for various adventures, such as a trip to Kamikochi via the Alpico line and a bus ride. At Kamikochi, visitors can explore nature trails and even engage in mountain climbing. The area offers stunning views of the Hokata mountain ranges. Additionally, the station is home to the Honda Collection, featuring 342 timepieces from Japan, Europe, and the United States.
Matsumoto is not a very big city, but it is convenient. The train station and bus stop are close together, which is a very convenient design.

A convenient station connected to a department store, making it easy for shopping and dining. It serves as the starting point to Kamikochi, so it’s often busy with tourists. A helpful tourist information center is also available.

Great JR staff at Matsumoto We were visiting as tourists and had put luggage into a locker; and then with 20 mins before our bus was to leave, realised we had lost the QR code to get luggage back. Wonderful help from a JR Ticket office woman, who spoke enough English to understand our problem. She and another woman researched to work out the solution, and called a JR Manager who arrived quickly and could override the locker system and open our locker. Luggage back, heart rate back to normal, divorce avoided. Thank you JR

Good place to base yourself for visits to Kamicochi, Nakasendo Trail and Nagano. Great rail links, including Kanazawa, Nagoya and Tokyo. In town you have the castle plus a variety of eateries.
Vietem — Google review
A smaller station on the express train route connecting Nagano and Nagoya. It's also a nice jumping point for a bus or bus and train combo to Kamikochi. For that matter to enjoy the town and its castle. The ticket to Kamikochi can be purchased on 2 ticket machines to the left of a bank of the regular ticket machines. The tourist information staff speak great English and can help you if you have questions. There is a connected Midori mall for shops and restaurants. Also there are bakeries and restaurants outside the station.

JR Matsumoto station, starting station of my trip to Tateyama-Kurobe alpine route (JR Matsumoto - Shinano-Omachi station), in station have many coin locker for leave your luggage and department store adjacent to station floor 1st-3rd - so comfortable!!
WICHITPHUM P — Google review
It is the Worst railway station I have encountered ever. Very often in the evening, there can be a very long queue at the fare adjustment booth of the station, and the processing is slow. It is caused by O-ito Line that is not ready for Suica and Pasmo IC cards, and many stations on the railway line stop selling tickets from late afternoon when the passenger volume increases. If you come from the O-ito Line, there is no way but to go to the fare adjustment window to get out of the Matsumoto station. JRE has hired a good number of young staff recently, but what they should invest is not the human resource but the facility for the IC cards and automatic ticket gate.

This is a main station of Matsumoto. Clean, medium size and not complicated. There are many signs that show timetables and tracks so you will never get lost in this station. Luggage storage is also available here. Staffs are very helpful. Many shops and restaurants are in and round the station.

The alpine plateau boasts over 200 varieties of flowers and serves as grazing land for cattle. At an altitude of over 2000 meters, it offers seasonal beauty and stunning starry nights.
Beautifull view in matsumoto city. When you come to this city, dont forget to visit this mountain. Around 1.5 hours from downtown. Here you can view the nature, blue sky, green of grass, and also the cows. You can also see the city beneath you. Becarefull with the wind, sometimes become very strong. The parking is little bit down so to reach here you have to walk for about 45 minutes and sooner as per your pace. It is a beautiful highland where there is cow farm. Better to take some jacket as it might get cold at evening and night although it was summer. Take some snacks and water just in case you are hungry and thirsty. There is nothing just nature and you🙏🏻🙏🏻

(Translated by Google) It's a beautiful plateau, but the summit only has a triangulation point. There are various trails, but from Yamamoto Koyama it takes about an hour, with only a gentle climb at the end, so it's more of a hike than a climb. However, it's a mountain over 2,000m high, so don't underestimate it. I visited on a sunny day on October 17th, but it was cold with a strong wind, so I climbed wearing a fleece, rainwear for wind protection, and a woolen hat. You can get delicious food at Oga-To Hotel. Bar
Matsumoto Brewery Tap Room Nakamachi is a hidden gem located between the castle and the art museum, offering a range of local beers on tap as well as bottled beers and soft drinks. The tap room is situated in a lovely old building with a delightful two-storey layout. Visitors can enjoy pure spring water brewed Pale Ale while standing at the bar on the first floor or sitting at one of three tables upstairs.
A standing bar that can probably fit no more than a dozen people max, including the limited seating on the second floor. Closes early around dinner time, which means it's more of a quick stop than a hangout watering hole. As a low-maintenance solo drinker and sampler of local microbreweries, this was just fine for me. The bartender did not speak much English and was reserved, but courteous enough to respond to basic interactions. Just don't expect him to entertain you and have deep conversations on the taste notes of the beer, especially in English. Know your beer basics, give one of their 5 taps a try, and enjoy/switch as you go. I liked their session IPA. Very drinkable with enough heft.
D C — Google review
I dropped by to sample some of the draft beer (en route to a different location). I ordered the daily flight and all 3 beers were very good. Didn’t take a look upstairs nor did I order any food. There’s standing room for 3 or 4 people at the bar. I ended up buying 6 bottles of their beer including several limited edition bottles. I’d love to go there again!
Karen S — Google review
Hidden gem tap room off the beaten path. Located between the castle and the art museum. Brewed with pure spring water from the mountain. Several taps from that brewery and a guest beer. There is another tap room in a couple of minutes walk where they serve foods but this one is more seriously beers only Standing bar on 1F and three tables upstairs. To go bottled beers are also available
Zara K — Google review
Unfortunately the attitude of Wednesday’s bartender was unfriendly. He looks like to want to only welcome the local people. He said customers would stay too long with only one beer in n second floor. I understand his frustration about that. But if so, he could write “please order another beer if you want to be occupy the seat more than 30 min”. I wanted to take my friends here but changed mind.
玉乃わいん — Google review
All four of the beers available on draft were very good: two IPAs (one strong, one micro), one stout, and one unusual but nevertheless good grape ale. English-speaking, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. Very drinkable and refreshing.

Really excellent brewery and tap room. Friendly host and a great selection of styles, for which they have done justice. Really enjoyed the castle stout.
David M — Google review
Nice taproom. Bartender was very friendly and welcoming. Beers were excellent. The grape beer was surprisingly good. There is limited space by the bar but more seating on the second floor. A cozy spot to make new friends over some good beer. Another must visit in my books when in Matsumoto.
Irwin T — Google review
The best place to stop by for beer lovers! The tap room is a bit small but they have an upstairs as well. On tap they had 5 beers and a hop cider. The bar tender was very lovely and cheerful, enabling a conversation for all guest at the bar. If you're curious about trying fantastic Japanese beer you should definitely go there. If you can't drink so much, don't worry! You can buy bottled beers as well and take them home or have them send to you.

Located in Azumino, the museum is surrounded by a beautiful park and can be easily accessed from Shinano-Matsukawa Station on the JR Oito line. The museum offers a scenic venue with watercolors and other illustrations for kids' books, along with a cafe.

It's not just the museum. It's the whole town that has a good relaxing vibe. The exhibitions are nice and precise. The restaurant has a nice view and good foods. The museum shop has a variety of interesting souvenirs. The surrounding area of the museum is phoenomenon, mountains, stream, lavander field, rice field, etc. It's a good decision to come here instead of the Tokyo location. The Totochan square Chihiro park is also nice for book fans. You can't take photos inside the exhibition halls but outside and in the hallway it's fine.

A wonderful tribute to an illustrator that anyone growing up in Japan will be familiar with. The museum not only features originals (and carefully produced conservatory grade reproductions of those too delicate to display) but also a huge library of Japanese language children’s picture books that visitors can browse and read at their leisure. Newly added is a full scale reproduction of the train car classroom and library where you can sit and read children’s books. Our kids (aged 9 and 12 and with a decent grip of Japanese) loved this place, reading books for hours.

I often visit Kamikochi to go on a hike on the trail to Myojin-ike Pond and Taisho-ike Pond. Myojin-ike Pond is said to be a place of the spirits where you can get energy from the heaven, and Taisho-ike Pond reminds the ancient land as you may see plenty of trees growing around the water. But you should pay attention that there is no ATM to withdraw money in and around the park, and even more, most of the souvenir shops don't accept credit cards. Prepare cash for eating and shopping there. If you visit by train, get off the train at the Shin Shimashima Station to take a bus for Kamikochi, and if you visit by car, don't miss the last parking area where you are required to park your car and wait for a bus for there.

Nestled amidst lush woods and towering mountains, Taisho Ike Pond is a serene lake area offering various outdoor activities such as hiking and boating. The pond's tranquil waters beautifully mirror the surrounding peaks, while the 'Standing dead trees' create a captivating landscape that changes with the seasons. Formed in the early 20th century by an eruption of Mount Yai, this picturesque pond is renowned for its reflection of Mt. Yakedake and golden larch trees.
We have wanted to trek from Taisho pond to Kamikochi information centre but due to thick snow, the designated path was closed by authority. This is not unexpected since it is the first day of opening for 2025. Nevertheless, nature still brings to us wonderful experience.

In early May, during Japan’s Golden Week holidays, snow begins to melt and more mountain areas open up. With the lifting of winter restrictions, the Kamikōchi area is also coming back to life. No matter when you visit—even if the weather isn’t perfect—it’s always beautiful. On this day, our guests were very lucky to experience the forest in rich colors after rain followed by sunshine.

Literally the most beautiful lake in Kamikochi area. Easily accessible using a bus, there are also several parking spaces for cars to stop temporarily. From here, it's about an hour of walking to Kappabashi bridge, with mostly flat terrain. Some people even take their baby strollers with them. I highly recommend this place for a quick visit.

Gorgeous pond on a clear day. Note that we visited at the start of the season on 19 April 2025, and I don't quite recommend as the hiking trails are mostly closed and the path is snowy, icy and muddy, making it very challenging to walk. Only possible to visit by alighting from the designated bus stop. I'm sure it will be even more beautiful during spring or autumn. Note that the only way to visit is by bus from Hirayu onsen and the bus arrives every 30mins. There is also no toilet at this stop so better go before you get on the bus.

Nestled amidst mountain peaks and lush forests, Myōjin First Pond is a serene and picturesque gourd-shaped lake located within the grounds of Hotaka Shrine's inner shrine in Kamikochi. Also known as Mirror Pond or Pond of the Gods, it is steeped in Shinto mythology and offers a reflective surface with pure waters. Legend has it that this area played a significant role in Japanese mythology.
The water was incredibly clear and the place had a mystical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. It takes about 1.5 hours on foot from Taisho Pond, and about 1 hour from Kappa Bridge. I recommend wearing light and comfortable clothing for the walk. Be aware that bears may appear in the area—carrying bear spray or a bear bell is highly recommended. Since you’re deep in nature, things might not go as expected, so stay alert and be prepared.

Myōjin First Pond (also known as Ichinomiya-ike) is a surrounded by forest and overlooked by the towering peaks of the Northern Alps. The pond is known for its mirror-like surface that reflects the surrounding landscape. It’s is probably truly picturesque in autumn, when the trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold. However in the second part of April, the views were not particularly striking. The area is considered spiritually significant. A fee (500 yen) is required to enter the pond area.

Matsumoto City Alps Park is a hilltop destination featuring playgrounds, walking trails, and an observation deck that offers stunning views of the Japanese Alps. The park is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture and offers a trail from Konashidaira Campsite to Yokoo Sanso along the Azusa River. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk while taking in the natural beauty of the area.
A picturesque park set in the mountains. We have come multiple times and it never fails to impress. The perfect picnic spot for the day during cherry blossom season in Matsumoto. The local spot to hang out and enjoy fresh mountain air and panorama views of Matsumoto. It's vastness prevents the feeling of over crowding on busy days, and adds to the wonder and relaxed enjoyment of outing. There are multiple play areas for kids (3-13) including a fun toboggan run (¥400). The many and various playground equipment is well-maintained, and challenging both physically and mentally for the little ones. Weather permitting, it's a great place for kids to burn energy in a wonderful open space while the adults enjoy the beauty of nature. Key highlights and tips: -We love to end our day with gelato from a van vendor parked at the start of the walk back to the carpark. The gelato is flavourful and deliciously rich.🥰 -The park has numerous amenities that are clean, but no cooking facilities, and cooking is not allowed in the park. So stop by a convenience store and grab some food for your picnic. They will gladly heat food in store for you. (Our fave is family mart chicken and their souffle pudding) -It can get quite windy especially in the afternoon, so bring an extra layer just in case.

Could see the Northern Alps but unfortunately, I visited when it rained the night before thus the Alps are hidden behind clouds. Easy commute from town by bus that takes you right to the Park! But do check bus schedule; there was only 2 timing (1000hrs & 1400 from terminus) when I came on 23-4-25 Lots to get yourself engrossed in.. be it the Nature Museum that is a ton of knowledge on flora n fauna of the area including the different species of Sakuras. Kids and adults both get a fair chance of fun of slides too! Saw adults playing something like golf but with croquet rackets on a course just like golf with tee ( hit off?) and a green where they putted the big coloured balls into. Overall, a tranquil n serene place to have your walks or just soak in the view and crisp air.

Highly recommend to come! Pleasantly surprised that there's a toboggan ride on top with no queue when we visited end of Sept. My toddler sat with me in one car and enjoyed it very much. There's also a big playground suitable for all ages. Great panoramic view of the Alps and city, which I think will be even better on a clear day with autumn colours.

I went up there a couple of times 30 years ago, when I was a university student in Matsumoto... and went up there last week, on a weekday. The good part is that it is almost empty on a weekday, the weather was clear, you can see around Matsumoto (at no extra charge) from the new observation tower (that did not exist 30 years ago). If you are in Matsumoto, especially if you are there with a car or can afford a cab, this is an excellent sightseeing place. I don't know if it is as lively on the weekends as it used to be (I hope so), but on a weekday early afternoon it was very-very peaceful.

Alps Park is a wonderful, huge park with amazing views overlooking the city and the surrounding mountains. We recommend checking out the observation deck for the best photo opportunities. It’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon walk or a picnic. There are also great areas for kids, including a small zoo, playgrounds, and the popular Alps Dream Coaster (a long roller slide). Getting here is easy, and it offers a great, free escape into nature just outside of the main city center.

(Translated by Google) Walter Weston was a British missionary and an honorary member of the Japanese Alpine Club. He lived in Japan three times, during which time he summited numerous Japanese mountains and introduced them to the world through his books. He left his mark on mountains all over Japan, but he is particularly famous for Kamikochi. This relief was erected in 1937 (Showa 12) to commemorate Weston's achievements. Every June, the Kamikochi Weston Festival is held in front of the monument. Weston also had a relationship with Kamijo Kamonji, a local hunter and guide in Kamikochi. Weston is said to have held Kamonji in higher regard than mountain guide Uchino Tsunejiro. Mount Yari, standing at 3,180 meters, is a prominent peak in the Northern Alps of Japan. It offers challenging trekking routes and breathtaking panoramic views. The mountain is known for its distinctive spear-like shape and is a popular destination for experienced mountaineers. The trail from Shinhotaka Onsen to Kamikochi features steep ridges, ladders, and chain sections. Despite being crowded during peak season, most visitors do not venture far from the bus terminal area.
Mt. Yarigatake is a beautiful and steep mountain in Japan. It was actually a very beautiful thing to see a sunrise near by.
KIICHIRO K — Google review
I hiked Mount Yari starting early from Kamikōchi, spent the first night at Yarisawa Lodge, and continued the next day up to Yarigatake Sanso Lodge. From there, I climbed to the peak and spent the night at the lodge before descending all the way down to Shinhotaka Onsen the next day. Although the route is well-marked and generally accessible, it became more challenging on the way back (especially since many of the mountain huts were closed during my visit. The final section to the summit is steep and exposed, requiring full focus. It’s not technically difficult, but it is dangerous: you must keep both hands on the chains and ladders at all times, and take each step carefully. Helmets can be rented at the lodge for ¥500 (around €3.00) and are highly recommended for this section. Still, it was an incredible experience: the views are breathtaking, the trail is safe if you go prepared, and the sense of isolation at the top is unique. Highly recommend this route to anyone in good physical shape and looking for an unforgettable adventure in the Japanese Alps. Photos on Instagram: @edddaie

Zengorono Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its dramatic cascade tumbling over rocks into a serene pool below. An early morning hike from the nearby guesthouse leads adventurers to this stunning waterfall, where views can be enjoyed from a charming footbridge. The journey begins at a spacious parking lot along Echo Line, and well-marked paths ensure safety as you navigate the gentle ups and downs of the terrain.

I had a stiff back so lifting my legs was painful, but I managed to get there. There was a portable toilet along the way, but it seemed like you couldn't use it unless you brought a portable toilet. There was a bridge in front of the falls, and because there was a lot of water, water droplets got on you. There were lots of negative ions and it was cool. The only disappointment was that there was a photographer who seemed like the master of his profession, setting up a tripod on the bridge in front of the falls. He was hogging the best position, which was a nuisance. The round trip was about 2km, and I think it took about 30 minutes. Mount Yakedake, located in the Hida range, is a renowned active volcano offering hiking opportunities on one of its peaks. Situated on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, it stands as the only active volcano in the Northern Alps. The trail starting from Nakanoyu Onsen hot springs leads to the north peak, providing breathtaking views of Kamikochi's magnificent mountains.
Quite fun hike, beautiful views and quite special being on an active vulcano and stepping between steaming holes. If you have knee problems or hate having to climb even a bit then I don’t recommend, otherwise YES, DO IT (we even saw some wild monkeys which was a first for me so very exciting:))
Csibpip — Google review
[Stunning Views, Great Effort to Reward ratio] My partner and I climbed Mt Yake through this Nakanoyu Onsen entrance on 10 Nov 2024 (Note that on this date, we found that the entrance to Mt Yake via Kamikochi (which is another trail) was closed for the winter season). We're average hikers and don't hike often, and it took us ~7.5 hours (including a 30 min lunch break at the top). 4hrs up, 3 hrs down (our feet was hurting, but could have done it in 2.5hrs). Trek poles is a good to have for beginner hikers, but not really necessary if you feel confident in general. We found the trek itself moderately challenging, with the main difficulty coming from the more technical middle rocky section and traversing around some big boulders at the top. Overall definitely doable! Note to come early to the start of this trek as parking is somewhat limited and you might have to park along the roadside if you come later.

Very cool mountain with great views on the river and surrounding mountains. We went up in late July and started from kamikochi and went down to Nakanoyu-Onsen. A few tips for fellow hikers: There is warnings about the volcanic activities (we went in normal clothes without helmet, but you could borrow one) and there has been bear sightings further down by the river. The hike up from kamikochi took about 3,5 and down about 3 (without breaks). After around 2 hours through mostly forest, you can get drinks from the only hut on the mountain. The last part of the climb up was quite steep and stoney, so probably harder to go down that way. The trail ends near Nakanoyu-Onsen hotel and to get to the nearest bus station "Nakanoyu Onsen" you need to walk another 45 min downhill. For the Alpicon bus to Shin-Shimashima you should get a ticket for the bus ride back in kamikochi (there is the risk that the bus will be full, so wouldn't recommend getting the last one)

The view of the summit is amazing ! Wear good hiking shoes as the path can get very rocky and steep towards the summit. Bring your own food and water as well!

Hello, I did this hike on 07 June from Kamikochi, and it took me 4hours to reach the summit and 2hr 50min to descend. I’m a person with average fitness, just for perspective. The first 40min will take you through beautiful lush greenery in the forest, before start climbing. There are several wooden & metal planks crossing, for streams and rocky areas. You will also need to climb around 5 or 6 ladders, with the longest being 10m tall. All these are before you reach the mid-point, where there is a hut (for snacks and water?) As of date, it is not operational but I believe it will be open in July? Do check beforehand. Else bring sufficient water & food. After the hut is where the real climb begins. Exposed rocks and strong winds. Do bring a windbreaker. This is a hike where poles will definitely help you. The summit offers a stunning 360 view of the surrounding mountain ranges on a clear day. Congratulate yourself and take time to take it all in!

did the hike in late october… going up was through bamboo forest as we started at the trail head near nakanoyu onsen ryokan. we decided to loop the trail back down to kamikochi. at this time of year there was snow through the rock scramble but we managed with caution. once at the hut we saw that the trail to kamikochi advised that ladders had been taken away from mid october and would be placed back after the winter season concluded however this was not the case and we made it into kamikochi with no worries. i am of average fitness and managed okay… would advise to make sure you follow the signage on the rocks as you head down over the other side to kamikochi. crater at this time of year was of great colour.. any later and it might have been frozen over.

The Old System High School Memorial Hall is a museum in Taisho 8 (1919) that was used as Matsumoto High School until after World War II and then became Shinshu University. The impressive western-style wooden school building was preserved by the graduates and citizens, and now used as the Agata no Mori Culture Museum. Inside the building are exhibits about the school's history and its alumni.

This is not an exhibition of materials about Matsumoto High School, but an exhibition of materials about the old high school as a whole. The amount of material available about old high schools is overwhelming. It takes time to look around carefully. There are some things that were only paid until March. I think it would be better to promote Yuzuki Sayaro, who is the most famous graduate of Matsumoto High School (in my opinion).

(Translated by Google) Visited November 12, 2023 A souvenir from the former high school attached to the former Matsumoto High School building, located west of Agata Forest Park. Carlos lived in the Hoyo Dormitory, a former self-governing dormitory at the former Tokyo University of Fisheries (now Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology), and he has a keen interest in the self-governing dormitories of former high schools. By the way, his alma mater, Seijo High School, was also one of the former high schools. Carlos' grandfather was the dorm manager of Komaba Dormitory, a self-governing dormitory at the former First High School. He's often heard stories about these dormitories. I have fond memories of staying there and listening to stories from the dormitories, which were facing closure at the time, when I was still a student. ☆ The museum is packed with exhibits and exhibits, showcasing the former Matsumoto High School and its self-governing dormitories, as well as student life and dormitory conditions at the time. It's very interesting. The woman who sat next to me at Berg was a Hokkaido University graduate and had friends there. She was very knowledgeable about the Keitoku Dormitory, and she told me many anecdotes. Was it a good old-fashioned, rowdy experience? I don't want the tradition of the old high school system to die out. Scenic spot
Karasawa Cirque is a renowned spot for its stunning foliage, offering a great hiking experience for those who prefer less challenging mountain climbs. The area features smooth level walkways in Kamikochi, with the option to venture further to Mt. Norikura, which stands at 3,026 meters high and can be reached in just two hours from the carpark.
6/18-6/20 2022 Hike started at 6am at Kamikochi bus terminal and arrived at Karasawa Hutte 12pm. When we arrived the staff weren’t very hospitable, they just asked us to register and pay. They didn’t provide any information about the campsite. We only found that the kitchen closes at 4pm because another group tried to order food at 4:30pm (they could order a limited selection from the menu). We brought food so we didn’t need to order anything. There were only 3 tents (including ours), maybe because it was a Sunday. Also, because of the snowy conditions, one group saw the campsite, chose not to setup their tent and left. Most other hikers stayed in the Hutte. If this is your first time camping I strongly recommend staying in the Hutte because of the weather conditions. It’s quite windy and rainy at night, so the snow melts under your tent. Without the right gear, it could be dangerous for beginners. If you’re looking to avoid the heat of the summer and the crowds that come for the autumn foliage then June is a good chance. But be prepared for the snow and changing weather conditions. Also, at night it might not be possible to see the stars or there might not be enough people to create the famous picture with all the light up tents.

Autumn season the best time to visit

(Translated by Google) I visited Karasawa Carl in early August 2024. We were blessed with good weather and were able to enjoy the spectacular scenery. This place, located at an altitude of approximately 2,300 meters, is a magnificent glacier valley surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, and the surrounding mountains tower over us, overwhelming us with their scale. We were able to enjoy delicious meals at Karasawa Hutte and Karasawa Hut, which soothed our tired bodies. Next time, I would like to try staying in a tent and fully enjoy the stars in the night sky and the mountains lit up by the sunrise. (Translated by Google) I'll write this in detail in case there are fools like me. Haha 1) The scenery will probably be as captivating as anything you've ever seen before. It boasts truly magnificent mountains. It's definitely worth seeing. Nevertheless, I'll note the safety precautions below. If you miss the timing, you could die, so be careful. (As of October 25, 2025, sunset is 5:06 PM, the last bus to Hirayu Onsen is 5:30 PM.) 2) I climbed in late October, and while there was no snow, the weather was unpredictable, with the sun shining and the rain falling. Don't go unless you've prepared enough clothes in your backpack to protect yourself from the current temperature of -10 degrees Celsius (-10 degrees Fahrenheit). (I prepared thoroughly.) The wind will make you need a padded jacket. Sweaty clothes will quickly evaporate. Be careful. 3) The round trip from Yokoo is exactly 4 hours. It's at 2,200-2,300 meters. Yokoo is 1,600 meters according to Garmin. If you're planning to stay overnight, you can climb, but if not, don't go after 10 AM (based on departure time from Yokoo). I left at 1 AM, but couldn't stand the sunset and ended up sleeping at Yokoo Hut. Haha 4) It's not an terribly difficult mountain to climb, but you do go really deep into the forest. I saw a sign at Yokoo Hut saying not to enter after 2 AM, so I thought it was 1 AM, but I ended up missing out. If you're a day hiker, never go past the 10 AM start time at Yokoo. 5) Make sure to wear light hiking boots. I experienced several near misses when I went in running shoes. It rained in the morning and continued to drizzle afterwards, making the fallen leaves and rocks incredibly slippery. I didn't bring a walking stick, so I barely managed to get back down with a broken piece of wood. The terrain is rocky, so if you twist your ankle, you're lost. The crowds drop dramatically from Yokoo. It's a mountain hike, not a trail. 6) There's no signal from Yokoo. Only GPS works. When I was climbing up from Kamikochi, I saw a group of people coming down from the magpie nest. They were all sleeping in tents. Apparently, the mountain hut strictly forbids tent guests from entering. Haha. Everyone slept in the mountain hut. Haha.

The surrounding mountains of Norikura are very beautiful. I went there during the holidays, and there weren't that many people, so it was very quiet and relaxing. There are several ponds and benches, so it's a comfortable place to have a snack or just relax while looking at the ponds. Some people were using professional cameras to take pictures of natural scenery such as ponds and mountains.
