Historic Sites
Airlie Gardens, originally a private garden for the Pembroke Jones family in 1901, is now a 67-acre public attraction featuring formal and informal gardens. The site boasts over 100,000 azaleas, expansive grass lawns, and historic structures alongside modern sculptures. Visitors can explore the nearly 500-year-old Airlie Oak and enjoy picturesque views of the intracoastal waterway along Bradley Creek.
Such a wonderful place to explore and connect with nature. Plenty of shade and park benches to rest at along the way. For those who don’t like walking or need alternative transportation, private tours on golf carts are available if scheduled in advance. Beautifully scenery with a nice cozy gift shop to purchase souvenirs. Umbrellas and water are available for sale in the office.

Airlie Gardens was an incredible experience, and we highly recommend it! The butterfly exhibit was the highlight for us—it was really cool to be surrounded by so many beautiful butterflies. A couple of the people in our party were wearing blue shirts, which apparently attract them, so they kept landing on their backs and shoulders. The walking paths are well-maintained and allowed us to really enjoy all the gardens. We also found the turtles in the pond quite charming and friendly. It was a fantastic experience.
John C — Google review
Beautiful gardens at a very reasonable price. Take your time and stroll around taking in the beautiful sights and sounds that this gardens has to offer. The live oaks are truly magnificent with the Spanish moss flowing from their branches. There are very colorful flower groupings that give inspiration for home gardeners. They have many benches to sit and reflect as well tiered step gazebo that leads right down to the water where multiple turtles come to great visitors. The day that we visited, we saw the most beautiful birds fly in near the tiered steps and land on a branch a little ways away. The best we could tell, they looked pink but we had no idea what they were or if our eyes were playing tricks on us in the bright lighting. I took multiple pictures on my cell phone from different angles and zoomed in several times not knowing if I was actually capturing anything. When we got home I was looking through the photos and discovered that they were in fact pink and was able to see their flat wide bill well enough to identify them as Roseate Spoonbill. I have never seen these birds before and was astonished that we had been lucky enough to witness 3 of these beautiful creatures swooping in and landing on a branch! Just beautiful. There are many things to see and discover at Airlie Gardens that it is worth spending several hours walking, picnicking, and discovering the natural beauty of this part of North Carolina, so don't miss it!

Airlie Gardens is hands down one of my favorite places in Wilmington. It’s perfect for a family day, a romantic picnic, a solo stroll, or even a photo shoot—there’s something magical about it in every season, but spring (March–April) is especially breathtaking when everything is in bloom. There are tucked-away spots for quiet moments, statues, stone pillars, water features, a butterfly house, local sculptures, and a cobblestone maze that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. It’s even a popular wedding venue, and it’s easy to see why. We bought the season membership (about $75 for a family of five), which was well worth it compared to paying per visit. It’s also kid-friendly, has a cute gift shop, clean bathrooms, and plenty of parking. Whether you’re visiting, local, or looking for the perfect spot to propose—don’t skip this place. Airlie is rich with beauty, history, and memories just waiting to be made. ✅ Best in spring ✅ Romantic, kid-friendly, and peaceful ✅ Ideal for photos, picnics, and proposals 🎯 Tip: Grab the season pass if you plan to come more than once
Noel P — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Live oaks, winding paths along the water, turtles, butterfly house sculptures art work along the walk. They also have a free gulf cart shuttle that makes various stops around the gardens for those not physically able to walk the distances between the various gardens. I take my out of town guests and they love the experience.
Diane R — Google review
We love Airlie Gardens! It’s beautiful, serene, and always well kept, with so much to see and explore. We often bring a blanket for picnics by the water — the kids love running around and discovering new spots. It’s also absolutely magical during Christmas time. We’ve had a membership for a while now and plan to keep it for years to come!
Gabriella S — Google review
I'm amazed by the natural beauty of magnificent, Grand oaks trees, draped in Spanish moss, on the banks of creeks in the gardens. I was there to Officiate a wedding (and, what a perfect setting for a wedding ceremony!), and I cannot wait to come back and meander the many winding paths with my camera.
Patti R — Google review
It’s very beautiful. It’s got so much to see. The fountain is what I was here for. The whole farden feels very fairytale-like. Considering the hot and humid weather in Wilmington, you’d like to bring more water because the place is quite large. Their is this “mystery grave” from 18th century which adds some special vibe to the garden. Bird lovers will love this place and it’s very easy to get cool photographs. Note that the gate at the exit opens inward, so make sure your car is not too close to the gate upon leaving.

Halyburton Park is a 58-acre nature reserve with a community building, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a 1.3-mile walking and biking trail. The park offers various nature programs for different age groups and also caters to school field trips. Visitors can explore the diverse natural landscapes, habitats, limestone deposit ponds, and observe local wildlife such as birds and butterflies. Additionally, the park features a Nature Center where visitors can learn about native animals.
What I love most about this park is it’s undeveloped natural environment. The visitor center is full of educational activities and information about the wildlife and plants that are in the area. There a a few hiking trails & one that can be accessed by bicycle. There is a playground for the kiddos as well as picnic areas for lunch. The restroom facilities are clean and the park is dog friendly ! I highly recommend this park if you are in the Wilmington area.
Neatria B — Google review
Nice little park with a walking track. The trail has well shaded areas and benches to sit at, spaced out around the trail. Some of the parking lot can be shaded. There is also a nice swing set for kids to enjoy.
Sally B — Google review
My favorite little gem of a park. Perfect 1.2 mile loop in a nicely shaded path. I walk and run here three or more times a week. It’s never too busy and folks all are friendly. It’s also tucked away so little traffic noises.
Scott E — Google review
A lovely park for the whole family! Great play and picnic areas. The nature center has critters to see, activity games to learn about local plants and animals. The walking trails are shady, quiet, and we'll maintained. Makes for a splendid visit!

Attended Fire in the Pines here today, my first visit to the park. Also walked the trail, which is paved and well maintained. Lovely park and the festival was really informative!

Empie Park is a vibrant oasis in Wilmington, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Spanning 33 acres, this park boasts an impressive array of amenities including 19 tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, and athletic fields. The well-maintained paved trail encircling the park invites visitors to walk, jog or bike while soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
Great large and small dog park. Park grounds crew keep it tidy since 2006. Still unobservant dog owners who fail to pick up, but there are two big shaded runs, Water bowls and kiddie pools, benches and a gazebo. Balls for chasing hoses for cleaning off the sand (no mud). Everyone is engaging and cares for the facility. No escaping or digging under the chain link fence. Hats off to the grounds keepers who keep the bags stocked. Folks if you see them, thank them. They are underappreciated and dedicated.

First time here, close by. Decently sized with shade, access to plenty of water. There is soft vinyl pool there for dogs to splash around in which was quite stagnantly gross, and doesn't appear to be cleaned often. Which was reported to me by other dog owners. Pet owners friendly. 🚻 not too far away. Inadequate parking for designated for dog park visitors that are taken over daily by womens running group or cyclist groups, that meet pretty regularly. This complaint was also brought to my attention per local pet owners during our visit. When pet owners have kindly asked that they not take up the majority of parking spaces right at the dog park and to please utilize parking closer to towards the 🚻, which are plenty. They disregard and appear to have no consideration, as though they are entitled. It's always nice to find a place to bring your dogs to be out in nature, socialize, and get their needed exercise. I am grateful/thankful. Yet, that pool must go or be regularly cleaned by park staff.
TALIA Y — Google review
Another great park. Tennis courts, children's playground, dog run area, great walking trails. My most recent visit the grass was mowed, however alot of weeds growing in plant bed areas needing attention. Also women's bathroom needed attention. Multiple dead trees.
Sarah L — Google review
My pups love to walk around Empie Park. My beagle-basset tries to pick up errant tennis balls. And my other pups loves that someone put a water bowl by the drinking fountain. She loves drinking the fresh filtered water. They both love the attention they get while visiting the courts.

Cute park but all restrooms out of order. Come on Wilmington you can do better.
David — Google review
Very nice park. Tons of parking, 19 tennis courts, bocce ball courts, horse shoe stations, connects to a greenway and lots of bike trails. We went on a Saturday around 9:45 and while it was busy it wasn’t overwhelming at all! The dog park is nice and shaded with tons of water bowls around, running water and benches to sit at. Slightly smaller but very clean! Our dogs loved stretching their legs!

Park
Long Leaf Park, formerly known as Hugh MacRae Park, is a lush urban oasis in New Hanover County. Spanning 115 acres, the park offers a variety of amenities such as lighted baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, and a 1.5-mile trail. It's an ideal location for engagement portraits with vibrant azalea gardens, tranquil ponds, and towering trees providing diverse settings for photography.
Long Leaf Park offers a variety of things. Though its serene nature and tall trees are in my opinion the focal point, it has a lot of other great qualities. This place has a beautiful place to hang out around a pond, pull up bars/workout area, a full on parkour-ish course, a large playground, two baseball diamonds, a basketball court, a dog park, and a splash pad area for kids. Lastly, there is of course, a beautiful winding walking/jogging trail surrounding the entire place. I really enjoy going here, and even though people are always here, it doesn't feel crowded. Stop by, especially if you're visiting the area.
Jordan N — Google review
This park is absolutely amazing! Stunning pine trees are known for air purifying properties. Although I don’t have little kids I loved the playground they have built. Also a “playground” for big kids/adults. A very nice playground for dogs. There is a little pond with koi fish and turtles. I even spotted a Muscovy duck, which is native to Central/ South America, but domesticated in North America. I still can’t wrap my mind around it- what this exotic duck doing here? Alone in the park.
Anika N — Google review
This park is delightful. We visited while on vacation. We found it serendipitously. There are sidewalks but you can walk anywhere across the expansive areas. There is plenty of room for people to relax, read and rest. The dog park was well laid out with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. There are lots of trees including the amazing loblolly pines with lots of pine cones. I collected cones for a wreath. This is a great place for birding. We saw at least 10 species in only about 20 minutes.
Kathy P — Google review
Such a beautiful, exciting, and lovely park for events, walking, sports, and special activities. It's large and very expansive, and you can hike and see various animals and birds. They have a great miniature American ninja warrior course as well.
Warrior C — Google review
Great place for just about any activity! Pretty flowers and many paths throughout the park. Dog friendly!
Eichelle L — Google review
I'm an out of towner, and stumbled upon this lovely park. I came 2x to get my steps in the 1.5 mile trail that surrounds the park. Very well maintained.

I wish we had a playground/park of this caliper in our hometown (we're only visiting)! This checked all my boxes and even had a Free Little Library at the playground. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
Sydney G — Google review
A clean and beautiful trail! I always feel safe bringing my kids here. There’s something for everyone—my husband enjoys the basketball courts, my son loves the playground, our pup gets to run at the dog park, and we all enjoy the long walking trail together.

Greenfield Lake, located in Wilmington, North Carolina, is a man-made lake that has been serving the community for centuries. It offers a 4.1-mile trail for walking, running, or biking and provides opportunities for fishing. The Greenfield Lake Park & Gardens surrounding the lake boast lush greenery and stunning views of the water. Visitors can enjoy the scenic foot and bicycle path around the lake while being surrounded by rustic beauty and abundant birdlife.
I love this lake and park so much! Wilmington is known for it proximity to the beach but I appreciate even more how much nice swampiness you can find. And the fact that there are gators sometimes is incredible. Birds are great too.
Devon H — Google review
Features the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, which is a good place to see musical acts, a long path around the lake for walking or jogging, and boat ramp to launch kayak and small fishing craft. Also courts and concessions for many sports.
Sean M — Google review
Great place for a little bit of every kind of recreation. The neighbors around the lake are friendly for the most part, the parks around the lake are kept clean and well maintained/ manicured without taking away from the natural beauty of the lake. Great efforts have been implemented in cleaning up the water shed and maintaining a healthy eco system.
A G — Google review
It's a beautiful place to walk around, lots of shade from the trees. They offer paddle boats, with a small playground and a great skate park.
Tom R — Google review
Live this lake. Yellow bellied turtles, indegenous to the area, are aplenty. Egrets and other birds, including the red tailed hawk are also here. Quiet and plenty of activities to enjoy. Kayaking, paddleboating, and canoeing available at affordable prices.
Yvette R — Google review
We had a great time kayaking here. Saw hundreds of turtles, numerous birds and EIGHT GATORS!
Nancy R — Google review
Great park in a convenient location. I go there for bird watching but there are an abundance of facilities. A 4.5 mile paved path loops the lake accommodating runners, walkers, and bicyclists. The main parking lot abuts a playground, canoe livery, a skate park, and tennis courts. The tennis courts also serve as pickleball courts.

Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park is a sprawling entertainment complex and waterpark that offers a plethora of activities for visitors. From a million-gallon wave pool, lazy river, and thrilling speed slides to go-karts, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, jungle gym, and arcade games - there's something for everyone. Open daily from May to September, it's an ideal spot for birthday parties or group outings. The park also features kiddie pools for the little ones.
Well I'm 29 in this place just gave me the best day. I grew up in Wilmington always had my birthday is in my sister's birthday is here especially the water park and you know the arcades man really have some memories. Like I said I'm 29 now and the place isn't visually the same but it is the same place I remember and enjoyed. I did the go-karts with my buddy we did the laser tag and it was just a great time for two young adults. So for the perspective of a child and a kid I sure enough would think that place is like going to heaven. And surprisingly it wasn't overpriced I mean it was fair price I would say for you know a little fun especially considering inflation in the times were in with you know a candy bar being $5. Lol. I highly recommend this for birthdays water park during the summer go-karts if you're 29 and want to enjoy some stupid childish fun.
Solace W — Google review
The park is a pretty good time. I can only speak to the arcade and mini golf areas. It’s a pretty affordable place for a date night. The only reason I couldn’t give the place five stars because the mini golf nature area needs some landscaping love. The arcade has updated games were nice but they do cost around $1.75 a game. It’s a nice little gem.
Zachary R — Google review
Good time with fun and laughs. Go kart track is short but you go around a good amount of times. Single rider and double rider available. 18 hole mini golf course is basic, nothing too hard. Arcade games and prizes inside.
Adam — Google review
It's better than not having a water park but lacks in some areas. The kiddie section is really small and not much to do for the cost.... but still my 2 year old grandson had a BLAST and 2 and under is free, so there's that.
Tomica F — Google review
On this visit I was visiting friends in Raleigh, North Carolina. I decided to take my nephew to jungle rapids. It was his first time at a water park and he lived it. Half the ride were not operational and the price to play the arcade games is outrageous. There isn't much to do in that part of North Carolina.
BALTIMORE M — Google review
The kids had a great time. The area in Where the food is served, was really hot. The fans were off. Staff members continued to make sure the water park was clean. The lines were not that long for the rides.
S — Google review
This place was so much fun! My son picked Jungle Rapids for his birthday and it did not disappoint. God blessed us with the perfect day here! Thank you!
Jamie B — Google review
Just had my daughter’s 6th birthday party there in their Jungle Room. This was a huge space with slides, obstacles to climb, ball pits, and inflatables. 20 kids showed up and had a great time. They provided pizza and drinks. It was truly turn-key. Two delightful staff members helped us and our guests. We didn’t even have to clean up. Wonderful experience!

Greenfield Park, situated in Downtown Wilmington, spans 250 acres and offers a variety of attractions. Visitors can enjoy activities such as tennis, walking and biking on the 5-mile trails that wind through gardens, playgrounds, grills, and sunny areas. The park also features a skatepark, kayak and boat rentals, as well as the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater hosting live music events.
One of the most beautiful parks I visited in the area. The turtles were adorable, but it was sad that they were waiting to be fed. Wildlife should not be fed & I wish more people respected that. Apparently people feed the alligators as well, but we didn't see any the day we were there. The views here are gorgeous & the walking path is perfect for any kind of stroll you're after. There's a nice playground area & restrooms which are clean. The fishing seems to be plentiful because I saw lots of people fishing.

really nice park around a beautiful lake in Wilmington. thoroughly enjoyed it about 4 and 1/2 Mile walk and appears to be continuing. working on bridges and moving paths a little closer to the lake and less residential viewing
Noel H — Google review
Great for putting a few miles in on the bike or walking. Approximately 4-5 miles around. You may see alligators, native birds, squirrels, and plenty other friendly folks enjoying the Greenfield park.
Jill A — Google review
I love it here....they are really cleaning it up down there and it's just such a zen environment every time I visit....this is definitely a special place!
Amanda U — Google review
Easy parking and shady paths to walk around lake. We are from out of the area and hoped to see the gator. It did not disappoint. Plenty of turtles greeted us, too.
Cathy S — Google review
Really beautiful place to stop and take a breather. Their was plenty of benches and so many turtles in the water. The bathrooms sucked and I think someone was using drugs in the stall while singing.
Zachary S — Google review
Beautiful views and wildlife. Went in the afternoon and felt safe. Loops was about 4.5 miles for us
Aria S — Google review
Beautiful, peaceful place for walking, cycling, paddle boating, picnics & a nice playground for the children. There is NO swimming allowed as the lake is home to alligators and poisonous snakes. There are tons of turtles. All best viewed from the many bridges and gazebos sprinkled about the 4 mile path around the lake. The flower gardens are lovely, plenty of opportunities to take some great photos. I personally love the gorgeous cypress trees with Spanish moss draping down.

Named after the dedicated conservationist Stanley Rehder, who championed these unique flora, this garden highlights species that thrive only within a 70-mile radius of Wilmington.
This is the first time I’ve ever left a review for something but this place deserves 5-stars. So cool to see native and endemic carnivorous plants all in one place and protected. It was a nice walk with Pitcher plants and Venus Flytraps all along. Most of the wild Flytraps are very small and easy to step on if you get off the trail, please be careful and watch your step if you do wander off.

This is a fantastic place to see many Venus fly traps and other carnivorous plants up close! Venus fly traps are only found within a 100km radius of Wilmington, which makes them a huge treasure of this area. There are many signs to help you learn more about the plants in this garden and how to spot them (some are very small). This park is an incredible way to showcase something uniquely beautiful about NC.

We went for the flytrap frolic and my kids had a great time! It was very hot that day. However, there is some shade along the trail. You definitely want to try to find the different kinds of carnivorous plants that are smaller than you think. It kept my kids entertained.

We went on Tuesday of this week. My daughter has been going for over a year. I was using a walker, so she took photos for me with my phone. The fly traps are grown only within a 100 mile radius of Wilmington, NC. So, they and the other plants have been grown here. Stanley Rehder grew the plants and worked on this beautiful location for 25 yr. He started, cultivated and helped grow this area. The walkway has trees, ferns & 100 yr old moss lining the walkway. The trees are magnolias, pine & oak. All of this park is a tribute to Stanley Rehder and The NC Park & Recreation Department. Here are the photos taken. The walkways and the observation areas are well planned & people of all abilities can enjoy at least some of the park. You do not buy tickets. IT IF FREE TO EVERYONE!

This park is a hidden gem for anyone who is a plant enthusiast. It’s right in the heart of Wilmington. It’s a beautiful place to spend some time in nature and learn more about carnivorous plants. I learned that Venus Flytraps are only found growing in the wild within 100 mile radius of Wilmington, NC, nowhere else in the world. We very much enjoyed our visit.

At 1st on the walk on we thought it was too late and saw nothing. But after the display our eyes tuned in knowing what we looking for. Look around the more moist areas you will see abundance there. True hidden gem

Pretty cool place to take a walk and escape some of the city-isisms. Variety of carnivorous plants in the “wild” and some factoid plaques to assist along the way. Easy parking and Handicap access to the place in the video after that it’s a little more off-with pavers. Check it out!
Chris B — Google review
I had no idea that ALL Venus fly traps were from within 100 miles of Wilmington. Has to do with the soil. This park is free and very informative. Signs and markers make it very easy for a self guided tour. You will also learn about other plants that grow there. We were disappointed at first because we didn’t see any, however we didn’t know how to spot them. They were small when we were there, but upon closer inspection we found they were everywhere. It was a very nice park. I’d like to go back in late summer to see the difference from when we were there mid spring.

We started the Gary Shell Cross City Trail from Wade Park, then followed the Shell Cross City Trail signs to Hayburton Park. The park has many oak and long pine needle trees that are beautiful. There's also a dog dish for water to feed your fur babies. Parking at Gary Shell is free. The trail is EASY. I didn't really care to walk on the sidewalk between parks and expected that it would be more of nature path, but it was only natural in the two parks we walked through. We walked around 5.5 miles round trip and it was good to get some exercise. The bonus was the alligator in the pond at Wade Park.

Ogden Park is a county park offering various recreational activities for visitors. It features ball fields, a pond, a skate park, and an off-leash dog zone. The park also provides BBQ and picnic areas for families and friends to enjoy outdoor gatherings. Additionally, it has amenities such as playgrounds with swings and slides, walking paths around the pond where visitors can observe ducks and turtles, picnic pavilions, bathrooms, and even a little free library.
Ogden park was a great time. Not too crowded but not completely empty. There is a good mix between traditional playground equipment and newer and more creative spins on things. There’s a beautiful walking trail and water just near the park. There’s a bunch of turtles who very evidently seem to be fed because they all come swimming up to the edge of the pond. It’s awesome! Very cool place right next to a bunch of stuff but somehow feels secluded.
Jordan N — Google review
Great facility for sports - ball fields, tennis, skate ramps, walking trails, playground equipment, picnic areas and a nice pond for turtles and geese or ducks. The skateboarders on the trails were more considerate than the dog walkers I came across. There are also two fenced off areas for dogs to play and plenty of bags and trash receptacles plus water.
MJ H — Google review
Beautiful park and decently sized dog park. Not dirty, and sidewalk is relatively large.
Hannah T — Google review
Nice park, walking trails are paved, turtle and fish pond are nice and the park is clean and well maintained, restrooms are clean. Covered picnic areas have electrical outlets and their is a skate park, tennis courts, soccer fields and workout area as well as a dog park. Really great park in this area!

Small dog park is pretty well shaded and has some benches for seating. Large dog park has a bench but only 1 tree so be prepared to cook while your doggos play. The 'park' is mostly a fenced in sand pit

Great fields and playground equipment. The walking and bike trails are sufficient and safe. We love riding our bikes here for sports practice.

Great park for kids! It's got a fun playground with swings and slides (some of which was under a shade canopy), a lovely walking path around a pond (my kids' enjoyed watching the ducks and turtles), picnic pavilions, bathrooms, and even a little free library. We will definitely be returning.

I love this park! Theres so many things to do here. There is a tennis court, skate park, workout spot, walking/bike trail, picnic tables, soccer field, restroom area, dog park ect. James E.L. Wade Park in Wilmington is a modestly sized public park featuring a .5 mile nature trail that winds through a wetland environment, offering scenic views of local creeks, wetlands, and tall pine trees. The park also includes picnic areas, restrooms, a playground suitable for kids aged 3-4 and up, and a short walking/biking loop ideal for children.
Very nice set of trails for a short walk or bike ride. Vast amount of evergreens, so it makes it a nice experience in the winter too. The visit I had was in mid-January. It’s nice to see and hear some wildlife during the winter and enjoy a good walk. There are several options to make the loop smaller if you don’t want to do the full loop. I look forward to visiting in the summer.
Jordan N — Google review
Love this park! Enjoy walking the trail and viewing the wildlife! Children love the playground. The newest addition that has claimed Wade Park as home, is our “Alligator “. He can usually be viewed from the dam. Keeping your pets on a leash and being aware are necessary! (Perhaps he needs a name!).
Cindy C — Google review
I gave Wade Park a five-star review because of the alligator in the pond! The park itself is lovely and well maintained. The bathrooms are super clean. The path is a loop, but we took it to the Gary Shell Cross City Trail all the way to Hayburton Park. You can add on extra mileage with the cross city trail.
Olivia C — Google review
Great neighborhood nature walk and playground. Lots of marsh wildlife in a small area, with a trail just long enough for the attention span of small kids. The bathrooms could use refurbishment, better security, and they're often locked.
Erik D — Google review
Lovely park with a paved walking path and boardwalk over the marshy areas. The water is teeming with life. We saw 5 turtles. A playground is available for children. Parking is limited but available along with restrooms and trash bins. Leashed dogs are welcome.

I live right next to Wade. Walk my dog there all the time. Unique Park, as most is marsh with walkways. Lots of bird life and various plants and waterlife.

Great park with a short walking/biking loop that's great for kids. There's even a wooden bridge for turtle watching!! The playground is more for kids 3-4 years and up, lots of things to climb on. Not a lot of parking though but it wasn't super busy when we went so it wasn't an issue.

Pages Creek Park Preserve is a small but charming nature preserve that offers a one-mile trail suitable for walking, hiking, running, and biking. The trail runs alongside a creek and marsh, providing ample opportunities for wildlife viewing. While the paths can be muddy after rain and have tree roots that may pose challenges for some walkers, the park features a lookout area at the end where kayaks can be launched in the water.
Great experience! Plenty of clear water views and wildlife. Kayak launch peir at the end.

Perfect little one mile loop. Wide enough for two people on the majority of the trail, single track as you pass behind the residential areas. Path could have been marked better but we figured it out. Super peaceful on a cool, cloudy morning. Not busy!

What a beautiful little trail! It's really well maintained, though not really marked. There are a lot of smaller trails diverging from the main one. Some informational signs along the main trail about local flora and fauna. I am just disappointed in lack of respect from people not picking up their dog poo. If your dog is on a leash, as stated, you should see when and where they poo and use the bags that are in full supply at the front to pick it up and dispose of it properly. It's all right in the middle of the .

Nestled adjacent to the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve is a delightful 10-acre haven for nature enthusiasts. As you stroll along the well-maintained boardwalks, you'll encounter an array of seasonal wildflowers and informative markers that enhance your experience.
One of Wilmington's best-kept secrets: a small (about 10 acres) thriving mixed forest with well-kept trails and lots of benches to sit and contemplate. Perfect for Forest Bathing... Pets are allowed, but,of course, must be on a leash.

Hi. We googled this lovely place and went to see it a few times. It's a beautiful place of nature: to hear all the lovely birds songs, to see many creatures and enjoy. Well-placed benches are great to relax and listen to all these lovely sounds that are coming from everywhere. Our many thanks for the maintenance crew. You people are doing a great job to keep this place beautiful. Please convey our appreciation to them. Thank you for not planting "foreign" plants that don't belong and would interfere with a local habitat. All the critters are thankful also. This place is very special and unique. It's not just a walk through nature, it's a lovely place to reconnect with it and to be a part of it.

We. February isn't the best time to visit, but we were expecting to catch sight of a handful of early ephemerals. Unfortunately we only found one plant blooming. There is very little parking (just 4 spaces capped at one hour) and the trash bins along the trails were overflowing badly. Overall this is an amazing resource and I'd love to try checking it out some other time. The minnows and turtles in the wetland pond were at least interesting even if the plant life was a little disappointing.

Love this little spot on campus! A lovely space to go and enjoy the woodland experience without being too far away from everything. Love sitting by the pond and watching the sun go down through the trees. Still haven't seen the whole woods yet, such a nice spot!

Nice little loop of trials off tucked away on the campus. Definitely needs some clean up (so many pine needles…makes it hard to walk in places) so wear good shoes! There’s a garden, bench areas all over the park which is really nice, and a few rows of seating in one area if you have a group. The pup had a blast and so did we. Only downfall is no flowers…may be to early in the season though.

Bellamy Mansion Museum is a stunning representation of antebellum architecture in Downtown Wilmington, NC. This 1861 mansion offers tours showcasing its Victorian garden and restored slave quarters. Once the residence of Dr. John Dillard Bellamy, it now serves as a museum filled with period antiques and decor. The mansion, carriage house, and historic gardens provide an elegant setting for weddings with their grand columns, ornate moldings, and wraparound porches.
The house is beautiful. It's deceptively bigger than it looks. We elected to do the self-paced audio tour, and thought it was very informative. Good selection of books and other items in the gift shop.

Visited while we were in town in July. My husband and I love history and decided to tour the mansion. We paid the extra five dollars for the guided tour and it was well worth it. Our guide was full of information and fun facts, and had a great personality! Truly one of the most interesting old mansion tours we’ve done.
Colleen M — Google review
Fun rainy day option for visitors staying at our beach house. We were happy to have private parking for free with admission tickets. We followed a self guided tour on our phone. Group of 5 all enjoyed the outing. The docent was friendly, informative, and even offered to take our group picture. Head over to Front Street Brewery afterwards for food & drinks.
Jackie B — Google review
Very informative! The volunteers are amazing. The history seems just not that long ago. Unfortunately, a few sad parts of history that must be known. It gives you insights on how short a time ago things have changed. Its worth the history knowledge to see it.

This was the coolest manshion museum I've been too! There were numerous innovative items I've never seen before: windows into kids rooms, indoor plumbing, etc.

Bill, our tour guide was very informative and courteous. We enjoyed our tour very much.
Susan H — Google review
The Bellamy Mansion offers self-guided tours on your smartphone and QR codes so you can tour at any time rather than on the hour like the other historical houses. This house does have a free parking lot so that makes it convenient to visit. Again, the house is not handicap accessible for tours but they do offer a video of the history for those who cannot use the stairs, and there are a lot of stairs. The antebellum house was built in 1861 and is the largest of the three homes at 10,000 sq feet. It has a few architectural styles, from Greek Revival to Neoclassical to Italianate. The buildings you can tour are the carriage house, urban slave quarters, and the 22-room mansion. I preferred the guided tours over this self-guided one as I like the interaction and hearing the docent explain the history. The self-guided tour did provide some of that and hearing the stories of the black craftsman who built the house and seeing the deplorable conditions they lived. I'm glad this aspect was included instead of trying to be covered up. I did enjoy going up to the Belvedere as that wasn't a feature I've seen before and it had great views. Dr. Bellamy's money did not come as a physician but from his plantations, where they made tar, pitch, and turpentine. One year's profit paid for the Bellamy Mansion. The upper floors do not have much if any, furnishings. The gardens that surround the house are nice. The mansion provides a good bit of history, but I'd take the guided tour if offered.
Rebecca M — Google review
This was an experience for sure. If you have an interest in history this is a learning experience. The condition of the grounds is well kept and the was indicative of that point in history. There should be some appreciation for our modern day creature comforts. The location is as advertised. My visit was a couple of years ago but worth the time if you are in the area.

Lovely little "hidden gem". There is a lot packed into this small arboretum. It seems to be a popular spot for families as there were lots of kid voices (NOT a bad thing). Even in winter there was plenty to see, especially all the camellias. Free admission is amazing! Would love to be here for one of the monthly plant sales.

Super cute (& FREE) spot to visit while in Wilmington. Our dog was staying in the hospital across the street and this place gave me a little bit of peace during that stressful time. Many places to just sit and enjoy the views and honestly a lot to see even though it’s not super big. Plenty of parking, we visited mid day on a weekday though so it could be busy weekend days. Stopped in, visiting from out of state for a wedding and really enjoyed the grounds and architectural foliage designed on campus. It was larger than I expected. Clean, well manicured, sizable array, and free, even with a pumpkin disposal on site they utilize for composting. The Japanese garden was my favorite. They have plants for sale, various artwork on the property, and a sizable parking lot for visitors. Keep up the fantastic work, everyone!

So peaceful and quiet. Lovely place for some meditation or to clear your thoughts. The garden layout is very nice and there are plenty of spots to sit in the shade and enjoy a book or just sit there contemplating nature and if you forgot to bring a book then you can pick one up at one of the free book boxes on the property. The koi fish are gigantic and fun to watch.

It was my first time visiting an Arboretum since I moved back to NC and it was a bit smaller than what I was used to in KY but it was so beautiful as soon as you walk in a big beautiful pond with a ton of fishes that swam right up to the surface. They also have plant sales on Saturdays. The day I visited sadly wasn't a Saturday, I may go back to visit just to get the Mother of Millions succulent.

Fantastic Arboretum in the Wilmington area of NC. The garden area is small and filled with various areas to explore. There is a butterfly garden that was filled with various butterflies on the day we visited in October. There is also a beautiful Japanese Garden which is pretty impressive for such a small space. The Japanese Garden has a large Koi pond with the very typical red bridge to cross over along with some beautiful plantings. The garden also has many quiet areas to sit and rest as you make your way through the garden area. Some of the areas are shady with art work scattered throughout and other benches are positioned in the sun. Many of the perennials were finished blooming for the summer. The annuals though, were in full bloom and just bright and colorful. Great way to spend a few hours

My husband and I attended this museum on a Sunday afternoon. I’ve been to many different museums, The Smithsonian, Natural Science and History in Raleigh, etc. This one is by far one of the best! It’s very affordable, and has lots of different exhibits and dioramas. We really enjoyed the origin story of long leaf pines! And last but not least, the technology and space section. Also, very few of the hands-on things were broken which is better than many other kids museums around.

Wow wow wow. We spent 3 hours at the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science and still feel like it wasn't enough, so we will go back again in a week. My kids (3 and 6) had so much fun exploring the hands-on exhibits, their favorite was the space room with different types of activities related to the solar system. I have never seen them being this excited before. Even my husband had a great time in the Space Place, usually he is not the type to enjoy museums. The outdoor activities were a huge hit, my kids didn't want to leave. I definitely recommend visiting this museum, especially if you have kids.

The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens in Wilmington is a captivating museum housed in an 18th-century Georgian-style home. The property boasts well-preserved period furnishings, including antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of Wilmington's elite residents. The house also features a freestanding kitchen house and Colonial-style gardens with orchards, rose gardens, and herb gardens.
the tours are done on the hour and last probably just over an hour. our tour guide, chuck, was very knowledgeable and charismatic. he was able to efficiently explain the history and process behind the home and its many functions and features. when asked a question, he was able to give a significant amount of insight. the tour was extremely informative and a good one-stop-shop to general history of wilmington. definitely worth checking out! :)
Reese F — Google review
Definitely a must-see place in Wilmington! Most objects are well preserved pieces from the house. Very knowledgeable and engaging guide who spent a lot of time explaining every interesting object in the house. History is fun and she proved it with excellent tour! The gardens were closed but this made me decide to return one day to see them as well.
Yaroslav B — Google review
Driving back from the low country, my sister and I decided to make a side trip to Wilmington. The tour was fascinating. It was interesting to learn that the house was used for entertaining the Wilmington upper class for many years before the Wright family bought it. And before that, it was the Wilmington jail. The tour takes about an hour and is worth it.
M S — Google review
We loved this tour, John our guide was very informative and entertaining. As an architect, I thrive on the history of why we build the way we do, and construction details. The gardens were also so well maintained!
Patricia M — Google review
The Burgwin-Wright House offers guided tours on the hour, although my tour lasted over an hour with all the history provided and fascinating stories about the property and the people who lived there. It is the oldest of the three houses. The house is not handicap accessible. It was built in 1770 in the Colonial Era on what was once a jail. It had ballast stone walls. Outside, you can see the jail cells. The house is of Georgian architecture. The house is furnished with items from the 18th and 19th centuries. The house was somewhere Burgwin did business and tried to impress those he entertained. The house shows how they lived in pre-revolutionary times. The paint colors were restored to what they were in 1770. Outside in another building, is the kitchen with a hearth, which was the jailer's quarters. I recommend taking a tour of the Burwin-Wright House if you are interested in history or architecture.
Rebecca M — Google review
Hunter, the Assistant Curator gave us a wonderful tour of this 18 century home. It’s interesting to note the builder lived 8 miles away on his plantation of 1000 acres. He used this home for entertainment, music, dancing and guest rooms. “The Headquarters of Cornwallis is this 2 story white weather-boarded structure built 1770. Cornwallis maintained his headquarters here while in possession of Wilmington in 1781.” There is a self guided walking tour of the Gardens on site.

Michael T — Google review
Beautiful and relaxing. Well it can be relaxing if inconsiderate people don't come along and start blasting loud music. It amazes me how people act like they are in their own backyard and no one else is around and do whatever they like. Get off their jet ski or boat and let their dogs run free. And blast music. When people who have already been there minding their business are not being loud and obnoxious have choice but to leave because they will catch a charge if they beat some manners into you. But Masonboro Island itself is a beautiful place
Kelly C — Google review
Beautiful island that is well worth the extra effort to get to it. The extra payoff for having to take a boat is so many less people and the unique ecology.

Took the lil guy I nanny for some park fun. It was very nice. He loved it. The only issue I had was the bench on the picnic tables are very far from the table so he had a hard time eating his lunch. It irritates me that people throw food on the floor and create ants but no fault of the park itself.
Andrea R — Google review
One of my favorite places to play disc golf. Except on the last visit. Went on a Saturday afternoon got to the second hole/basket, only it wasn’t there you could see where someone cut the pole that held it up. So I just skipped it and played through until the 15th and then crossed the little bridge to get to the other side and found out they also stole 16-18. It amazes me that somebody wanted to play disc golf so bad that they sold the damn baskets. I reckon that this is the world we live in now, where ppl steal stuff that ain’t even worth anything. Just for fun I guess. Or maybe just to steal other people’s fun.

It is a wonderful little hidden garden in Wrightsville beach. This was an unexpected find for us. It is well designed and maintained. One would never imagine its beauty while driving around it. It had a lot of shade and was a great place to relax. In addition to the garden it had a kids playground next to it as well which my kids thoroughly enjoyed. Parking was the only issue we had. We couldn't find any designated parking for it.

Veterans Park is a fantastic spot for honing your football skills, whether you're preparing for the upcoming adult season or just looking to have a game. The well-maintained fields provide an excellent setting for soccer matches as well. It's easily accessible and offers a great environment for practice sessions. Just remember to time the sprinklers right if you want to avoid getting wet! Additionally, it's advisable to bring along some bug spray to keep those pesky insects at bay during your games.
Beautiful fields. Well kept. Home of PISA soccer!
Elizabeth L — Google review
Nice, spacious park. The fields are labeled by color on a large plate, (blue, red, orange, and yellow) blue and red you can see coming into the parking lot, orange is seeing coming along the side, although you need to walk down the walkway a bit to read it. Yellow is the smallest sign, hidden between the large spruce trees on the left as you walk along the pathway from the side parking lot, which would be by the sand). Fields were good, plenty of space to sit and watch the games. Restrooms are in a small building labeled “concessions” and they are clean with a water fountain. It’s not the closet walk from the fields but you’ll appreciate they are there. There’s also a playground with shade and a shelter with benches. Sorry, I didn’t take pictures this day. Great place, being a chair.

Good overall facility. Loved that there was a ton of parking along the whole complex. For an out of town tournament this was huge for us. We were also pleased to have ample facilities for restrooms. Two large concession stands and then porta potties on the far field. Decent grass fields that had good drainage. Would rather be on turf, but this was decent except the one field with the massive crown. One thing we were disappointed with was the lack of masks from many of the opposing parents and the refs. Great park! It has recently been remodeled and the playground has a few different types of swings now. There are bathrooms nearby and 2 different pavillions with picnic tables. There is a fence around the entire playground! Tall trees give decent shade depending on the time of day. There's also a small workout station.
Heather E — Google review
The park doesn’t have swings. That was my daughter’s only complaint. The playground was naturally shaded by tall trees. My 3 and 6 year old were both able to comfortably play on the equipment. The bathrooms were also close by. There were two picnic areas and plenty of parking. I didn’t explore the other side of the building but I believe I saw soccer fields and a basketball court. There was plenty of open space to kick a ball around. So it’s a decent park to kill some time.

update June 27, 2020. I see that in 2016 someone said its a good idea for a new facility but again no running water to drink from the drinking fountain. original post: first off, not a "hood" park. you should lock your car no matter what park you go to. Myself and my two sons walk there and we have fun there but not as much fun as hugh macrae park, obviously we would have to drive to get to that one. I gave it one star to get the city to see this post because why does Macrae park have a water splash pad running all the time but Maides Park doesn't even have a drinking fountain that works on the outside or theres not a toddler changing table in the bathroom.

Riverfront Park, located in Wilmington, is a scenic area that includes a portion of the popular Downtown Riverwalk. It's a smaller venue compared to other concerts I've been to but it definitely wasn't packed. There was plenty of space between people. Many bars /beer tents and several food options. There were no lines to wait through for drinks. It was on the waterfront and getting in and parking was pretty easy.

Place is beautiful in a safe and clean location. Well thought out. Comfy and cozy. Open and easy to get around. Just the right size for a gathering. We had a great time. Felt safe. Even going to the parking deck late at night. Well done Wilmington, Bravo.
Leslie K — Google review
Not easily accessible (the park/playground next to the concert venue) to the public on weekends when there is a concert. All of the fencing makes the park feel industrial and uninviting. Sharing photos to show how limited access to the park is. From a distance (how people approach the park), you wouldn't even know you can access it at all.
Kevin B — Google review
We were downtown for the fireworks and it was awesome. Hadn't been in years so I was glad I could enjoy the festivities in such a cool venue.

Saw 311, Iya Terra and Iration Sept. 2021. Great show, great venue, great staff. Everyone having a great time and ALL of the event staff we spoke with were awesome. Definitely want to return for another show. The entire vibe couldn't have been more perfect. Appreciate the the mini-vacation Wilmington! Everyone we met and spoke with were very nice and always willing to help. Thank you!

Harry Connick Jr and his Band was amazing!! He plays so many different instruments so well. He sings, acts, he's a comic. A funny hilarious comic. They put on an upbeat spiritual journey. Venue was perfect 🥰 Poor Piggy's BBQ hit it out of the park with their BBQ Beef Brisket sandwiche and crispy shoestring fries! They even gave me extra napkins 💙🤘

My family had not been here in 2 years! I’ve read a lot of negativity about the construction. With the new entrance off of Scott’s Hill Loop Rd we barely saw any construction except for a small opening near the swing. The scenery and trail were still beautiful and peaceful!
Tim B — Google review
It's undergoing some changes now but the girls and I love it here! So many trails to take. The pond with the turtles is very calming also. Highly recommend coming to unwind and unplug from the stresses of life.
Stephen H — Google review
Located in Scott’s hill off Scott’s hill loop road there is a hidden 63acres of land to explore! Many different hiking trails full of wildlife and good views! Perfect for early morning or early evening adventures! Bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, &walking shoes! Kid friendly and pet friendly as long as they are on a leash
Chelsea R — Google review
Short easy loop with a few unmarked trails snaking through the woods. Currently a number of closures around the plantation on the NW side. New entrance has a large parking lot.

Easy nature trail. Very little elevation. Great for families. Plenty of parking
Dee G — Google review
If you are looking for a great way to spend a morning or afternoon away from the beach. This place has nice shady trails for a short or long walk. Don't forget some food to feed the turtles at the pond. Tons of turtles will come swimming towards the pier when you walk out on it.
Candace K — Google review
Abbey Nature Preserve is the perfect place to reconnect with nature and enjoy a peaceful walk. The trails are surrounded by tall trees, a small lake, and plenty of local wildlife. It’s ideal for relaxing, hiking, and taking a quiet break from the city noise. The paths are easy to follow and well-maintained, with beautiful photo spots — especially at sunset. The area is clean, serene, and great for visiting alone, with a partner, or even with pets. A true hidden gem full of calm and natural beauty.
Alonso M — Google review
They cut down so much of this trail to develop homes. It used to be such a big, beautiful trail. Now it's a small patch of woods between houses. The pond is nice, and I like having a trail around. But I miss what it used to be when you could park at Poplar Grove and walk all over those woods all the way to the green fields which are now fenced off. I hate what they did to this place. I wish people could still see what it used to be.

Love this park for my little ones. Perfect for toddler play. Small and quiet, yet plenty of space to run around. Also, a small shelter with few tables for a small gathering.

Has a full court and an extra basketball hoop that are rarely used. Simple but big and pretty nice park that's not typically very crowded
R.E H — Google review
We love this little park. There are open soccer fields, a full and half basketball court, playground area and the perfect paths for walking or riding a bike.
Hannah B — Google review
Nice little neighborhood park. Paved walking path, some picnic shelters, playground basketball courts, field for sports. The only downside is there's only a portable toilet and no real bathroom.
Anne C — Google review
Very clean relaxing area to sit and read, walk, watch sorry teams drill or play.

Nice family small park, the administration has provided a porter-John toilet (unisex). Small playground, a basketball court and a paved walk around. A covered picnic area.

Small serene and intimate neiborhood park. Children and youth friendly with basketball courts and green graased open field that is large enough for soccer. It also has a play area with swings, climbing bars, sliding set. Lots of trees and trail for walking, bicycling, and walking dogs. Also has two covered shelters for family or group picnics. Hidden gem.

Nice tennis courts! The place gets a little weird in the evening sometimes. Some homeless loitering or children with poor boundaries.
Reid M — Google review
I play Pickleball here. Court services are really worn but for some reason The play is still okay. I mean they're really worn. It's a hardcore crew that will play 7 days a week. They roll up early though, Play begins around 7:30a and it's done by 9:30ish

I was here for a Juneteenth Celebration. The park is gorgeous with big beautiful trees to keep cool. The only thing I'd like to see is water fountains and a few benches for sitting by the playground. A splash fountain would be a great addition for the kids.

This was absolutely the worst park in the state!!! Drug paraphernalia all over the play ground and the surrounding streets and blocks felt like an episode of "First 48" was secretly being filmed all around me at the exact same time. We saw people getting arrested all while trying to walk to the park. Visiting family and completely ignorant of where I was and where I had driven to!!! Never again will I step foot in this park with the expectation that I'm going to relax or have a peaceful moment. Run hide your kids🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️

Park
Archie Blue Community Park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of downtown Wilmington, NC. This revitalized park offers an array of outdoor activities, making it a perfect launch point for kayaking adventures along the creek and towards the river. Paddlers can explore scenic routes while taking in views of historic rice plantations. The park has undergone significant improvements over the years, transforming from its past as a dumping ground into a vibrant community space filled with lush greenery and well-maintained facilities.
I grew up in this Community ❤️ Love Grove in Wilmington, NC. It means a lot to me that they redid the park and have finally put in another exit road after 50+ yrs. Dirt roads, railroad track down the middle of King Street, the Dam where "Our" Families fished, the Mill where some of them made a Living. Archie Park; where the City of Wilmington use to dump trash. The first Glimpse into I Am Black and I'm Proud❤️😊, sleeping with the doors unlocked, Where Love greeted You once You crossed those tracks.

Greenlawn Memorial Park was wonderful. They coordinated with our funeral service on all the details so we could focus on family and honoring our loved one. They treated us and our loved one with dignity and compassion and have even contacted us days later, after the service, to make sure our family was doing well, and if we had any questions or concerns going forward that their services were still available to us. Our family finds comfort knowing our loved one is at peace and has a beautiful place to rest.

My Mother who is 83 pays yearly for a service to keep flowers out on her Mother's moselum plot. Almost every time we are out there, no flowers are out. Buyer beware, if you are paying for this service please make sure you check or have someone check for you to make sure you are getting the service you are paying for. She made a promise to her Mother to keep flowers out there as long as she is alive. Well once again at Christmas time no less, no flowers once again. If I could give zero stars I would..

Park
Eddy & Mary Haneman Park is a charming small park featuring a walking path that encircles the area. The park offers 4 regular swings and 2 baby swings, as well as picnic tables nestled among the trees and several scattered benches. Visitors can find a fountain, although its functionality may vary, and a convenient dog waste station on-site. Children particularly enjoy the "sunken pirate ship" play area and have even named the dolphin feature.
Great small park with a path all the way around. It has 4 regular swings and 2 baby swings. There are 2 picnic tables over by the trees and 4 benches scattered around the park. There was a fountain (I didn't check to see if it was working) and a dog waste station. The kids loved playing on the "sunken pirate ship" and named the dolphin so they could ride him home.
