Nature & Parks
Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, also known as Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium, is a compact yet fascinating destination showcasing a diverse collection of marine life. Situated on an 8-acre plot, this aquarium boasts over 100 species of tropical fish, including groupers, catfish, sharks, and stingrays. Visitors can witness captivating moon jellyfish and sea nettles in the jellyfish tank during feeding time.
Visited this beautiful aquarium during my trip to Kerala and it was such a peaceful and fascinating experience! The place is well-maintained with a wide variety of vibrant and exotic fish species. From colourful tropical fish to rare marine creatures, everything was displayed so beautifully. It’s a perfect spot for families, kids, and anyone who loves nature.
Keerthi S — Google review
I visited here once when it was inaugurated. It was a beautiful ecosystem for marine life. Fish were lively with a lot of corals. Now due to lack of maintenance/ negligence it’s completely in shabby. Most of the tanks have dead fishes. Almost all corals are dead. Most fishes are in very bad shape. It’s heart breaking. Has place to park the car on the road. Vizhinjam port and light house is also nearby.
Deepak V — Google review
I honestly don’t know what to comment. I was truly disappointed after visiting the famous Vizhinjam Aquarium, a place I had longed to see since childhood. Today’s visit felt like a mistake—I wish I had postponed it and kept the beautiful image alive in my heart. Sadly, the aquarium has fallen below even the standards of Neyyar Aquarium. Please, do something—just a little effort could make it so much better.
Joshin C — Google review
The aquarium in Kovalam is a destination well worth visiting, offering guests an engaging experience that can easily fill at least an hour. While the selection of fish species on display is somewhat limited, the exhibits remain captivating and are sure to leave a lasting impression. Particularly noteworthy are the sharks, turtles, and eels, which stand out as highlights of the aquarium. Observing these fascinating creatures up close provides a unique opportunity for both adults and children to appreciate their beauty and behaviour. Despite the modest variety, the quality of the displays makes it a worthwhile stop during your time in Kovalam.
Charles A — Google review
This place is very fabulous with a wide variety of marine species which we saw many types for the first time including the sea turtle and other different fishes.place is easy to locate and just 50 something for the ticket I think and the place is totally worth for marine and fish lovers

It's a small aquarium but we'll maintained. Entry fee is very cheaper. Can plan to expand more species and the infra in future.
Mouli S — Google review
I visited the aquarium on a Sunday and still it was not that frowned. There weren't many fishes on display but it was good count altogether. My 2 year old daughter enjoyed it and so it was worth it. :-)
Anand S — Google review
My dad took me here a while back, and I thought it was just a regular aquarium with some fish and sea creatures. But I was completely wrong. Inside, there are so many different species to explore, making it a fascinating experience. Outside, we also saw a small shark, several adorable turtles, and some big fish. Overall, it was a great experience!

It's Heaven 😍😍. At least once in your life you should come and visit this beach. It's very neat and one thing you should be cautious about is the jelly fish which the fishermen threw on the beach so beware of it. The Color of the water which is very attractive , eye-catching and stunned 😳.

A decent Beach, ample parking space, is sufficiently clean. Have options to get light foods nearby. Not too deep so kids can also enjoy. This is the easily accessinle beach at Kovalam.
Deepak V — Google review
We visited Grove Beach in Kanyakumari during heavy rains, and the experience was both thrilling and mesmerizing. The sea waves were high, and the water had risen so much that it was touching the walls near the road. 🌊🚧
Shivam S — Google review
No longer a beach thanks rise in sea levels and coastal erosion, however still a photo worthy location at Kovalam. As a local have seen over the years of this gradual change, makes us wonder on the impact of climate change.
EP — Google review
There has been a sea erosion happening and the shore sand has reduced a lot. Initial water is steep and somewhat uneven. Be careful. Haggle as much as you can with the speed boad ride providers. They come from 3000 to 2000 for the longest trip they have to offer.
Amish S — Google review
This beach is not good for swimming. There are not much life guard staffs available. We could see only one even when sea was rough. Bath facilities not available when we visited..

The German Bakery in Kovalam is a popular hangout spot with a good ambiance. It's known for its fusion cuisine and is highly recommended by travelers visiting the area. The bakery offers a pleasant dining experience, making it one of the best places to eat in Kovalam. With its beach town location on the Arabian Sea, Kovalam attracts tourists looking for an enjoyable culinary experience.
Very nice, relaxing and clean place with amazing view! Healthy good food with many vegetarian and non-vegetarian options on the menu. We have been here 5 days in a row and liked everything we have ordered: eggs perfectly baked, tasty dark brown bread, delicious fruit salad, loved the french toast, the cheese fritters, the salads, vegetable pakora and vegetable biryani! Their café latté and massala chai is also very good. On top of that very friendly service by Krishna and Raju. Special thanks to Raju who was our waiter every time except once. I can't remember ever having such a peaceful, kind, pro-active and descreet waiter. We recommend this place! ❤️
Inge V — Google review
I recently visited this place, and while the view was stunning, the service left much to be desired. It was evident that the staff prioritized foreigners over locals, which was disappointing and discriminatory. The waiter attending to us didn’t take our order properly. I ordered pasta and cold coffee, but even after we finished the pasta, there was no sign of the coffee. When we enquired, we realized the waiter had either forgotten or ignored the order. The pasta sauce was excellent, probably the highlight of the meal, even though the pasta itself wasn’t remarkable. However, the cold coffee was extremely bitter and unpleasant. Overall, the location and view are fantastic, but the service and attention to detail need serious improvement.
Berlin P — Google review
One of the worst food I ever had. Zero flavour profile! Drinks, main dish sandwich all were underwhelming and a big let down. The view is really good and coffee is decent and the service is on time and fast but the main item aka the food is horrible. Avoid the place if you love your taste buds because the dishes and drinks are picturesque but not palatable.

Breakfast with a view! Visited German Bakery in Kovalam — the location is stunning, overlooking the lighthouse and the beach. Tried the waffle and egg sandwich; both were decent, but nothing extraordinary. Cold coffee didn’t impress. Overall vibe is great for mornings, but the food was average. Rating: 3/5.
Ritu S — Google review
The sunset view is awesome. Too costly, especially given the food isn't great. Hated the farmer's breakfast - felt too much like an Indian dish. The French toast was the worst I have had. Fish fingers was okay.

Lighthouses
Nestled near the picturesque Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the Vizhinjam Lighthouse is a striking red-and-white striped beacon that has been guiding sailors since its completion in 1972. Standing tall at 36 meters on Kurumkal Hill, this lighthouse not only serves as a vital navigational aid but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding lush landscapes.
A Hidden Gem with a Breathtaking View! Vizhinjam Lighthouse is an absolute must-visit if you're near Kovalam or Thiruvananthapuram. It's not a very large lighthouse, but the view from the top is incredible. You get a 360-degree panoramic view of the Arabian Sea, nearby beaches, and the surrounding greenery. The climb to the top is short but steep—around 140 steps and a narrow spiral staircase at the end. It’s manageable for most people, and totally worth it for the scenery. The breeze up there is refreshing, especially around sunset. The lighthouse is well-maintained and there’s a small museum that gives you some interesting background on maritime history and navigation. Staff were polite and helpful. Pro tip: Try to go during clear weather, preferably in the late afternoon, and bring your camera—the sunset view is unforgettable! Entry Fee: Very reasonable (₹20–₹30 when I visited). Timing: Check before going, as it sometimes closes around noon and reopens in the afternoon. Parking: Available nearby. Highly recommended if you're in the area and want to enjoy a peaceful spot with a stunning view. 🌅

Located near Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram. A must-visit spot for those who love scenic views and calm surroundings. Perched on a hilltop, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, golden beaches, and lush greenery. The climb to the top is short but rewarding, and once you reach the viewing deck, the cool breeze and stunning vistas make it unforgettable, especially during sunset. The lighthouse is well-maintained, with a small museum showcasing its history. It’s a perfect blend of history, beauty, and relaxation - recommended for travelers and photographers.

The tower presents an excellent opportunity for visitors to spend at least an hour enjoying the surroundings. Standing at a height of 30 metres, the tower offers a remarkable vantage point, providing sweeping views of the landscape. The elevated position allows guests to appreciate the scenery from a unique perspective, making it a memorable stop during the trip. For photography enthusiasts, the tower is an ideal spot. The panoramic view from the top is perfect for capturing stunning photographs, whether of the natural beauty or the bustling activity below. Even at the entrance and the areas located beneath the tower, there are numerous photo opportunities. These locations allow visitors to take advantage of different angles and lighting conditions, ensuring a diverse collection of memorable images from their visit. But don't visit on the Monday.

Vizhinjam Lighthouse is one of the must-visit spots near Kovalam. The view from the top is absolutely stunning — you get a full panoramic view of the coastline, the blue sea, and the nearby beaches. The climb to the top is short but a little steep, totally worth it once you see the view. The place is well maintained and organized, with proper timings for entry. There’s also a small museum area that showcases the history of lighthouses, which is pretty interesting. It’s usually not too crowded if you go early in the morning or around sunset, and the lighting during those times makes it perfect for photos. Parking is available nearby as well. Overall, a beautiful spot to visit for views, photos, and a bit of peaceful time by the sea.

Samudra Beach in Kovalam is a tranquil coastal retreat, known for its serene atmosphere and captivating sunset views. It was the first topless beach in India, where locals still appreciate this practice despite it being prohibited. The beach offers a peaceful and secluded environment away from the main tourist areas, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk starting from Samudra Beach Park, admiring wall paintings and landscapes before reaching the peak with stunning views.
Perfect place to watch the waves crashing and enjoy a cold one. The beach is a small one. So a very selective crowd comes and you can just enjoy the view and sound

Yesterday, I stumbled upon Kovalam Samudra Beach Park, and it was truly stunning. While the wall paintings have begun to fade slightly, they still capture the essence of Kerala beautifully. There are stone benches to sit on, and the pleasant sea breeze keeps the heat at bay. The staff does an excellent job of maintaining cleanliness throughout the area, including the washrooms. However, due to the recent rains and rough seas, the beach is littered with debris. The children's park seems to be neglected. As we know, iron structures don’t endure well in coastal environments, and the authorities plan to replace them. Overall, it’s a lovely spot to unwind, enjoy the sea breeze, and snap some great photos. It would be wonderful if the tourism department could manage all beach areas in Kerala and develop more parks like this one.

Picturesque beach, very clean, less crowded. Morning here r blissful. U can watch local fishermen working here around 8-9 am . It is directly accessible from Uday samudra resort.

Samudra Beach, located near Kovalam, offers a tranquil and less crowded alternative to the popular Kovalam Beach. The beach is known for its clean sands, clear waters, and stunning sunsets. It’s ideal for a peaceful retreat, relaxing walks, and photography. However, swimming can be risky due to strong currents and waves. The beach lacks extensive facilities, such as restaurants or shaded seating, so visitors should plan accordingly. there is a narrow bushy path connecting it to the samudra beach park.

Samudra beach and adjacent park is a nice choice for a calm and peaceful evening.. Not a highly explored location.. Hence away from the rush most of the time.. One cafeteria is there with toilets..sea side dining facility is there by the nearby shops which is a delightful experience at night..
Sangeetha A — Google review
Decent beach, not any amusing kind considering the kovalam or varkala beach, and not very crowded. Sea was a bit rough when we went there so we have to be careful. There is a small rock formation which is very slippery so be extremely careful before jumping on them or else you could end up in the hospital severely injured. There is also a secluded space above the rock amidst the weed growing there. The weed situation is pretty bad as no one is to there to look after this rock formation and they are completely filled with wrappers and plastic wastes. They have a beach park nearby which can be accessed by a sidewalk through the periphery of a resort and a large number of steps leads you to this park, where we can sit and enjoy the beauty. It is decorated with wall arts and is well maintained. Kids have a small park also inside this . Adults can sit and enjoy the scenic beauty from within the park, sunset view is awesome. There is only a small ocean wall that’s made by dumping a set of large rocks in order to prevent the waves from crashing into the buildings. As these sea wall is narrow there isn’t much width to this walkway as it’s just a narrow concrete belt above the sea wall. But it’s an extremely beautiful place to sit and enjoy the sunset, waves etc.

A perfect place to watch the sunset....Ideal in the evenings especially to take a walk. The scorching intensity of the sun with which it shines down throughout the day, the warmth of the sunset in particular is an experience unlike any other and something hard to put into words.
SJV — Google review
To have a good walk and to enjoy the sunset, start from Samudra Beach Park.. Enjoy the wall paintings and the landscape and then turn left (where the inauguration stone is fixed) and then go by the stairs up which takes you to the peak and then go down the winding path. Be careful if it is wet as you could slip.. This path will lead behind the Samudra hotel to the other side towards the mosque and then a stretch of beach where you can see some boats parked and the hotel view. The beach closes by sunset, usually 6:35 PM, during monsoon. Life guards on duty.. Please comply with their instructions for your own safety.. Don't try any selfie stuns, as the waves are strong and can easily take you to the deep side of the sea.

Vizhinjam Beach is a serene and peaceful spot, located alongside the bustling Vizhinjam Harbour. In the evenings, as the sun sets, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, creating a picturesque backdrop. Adding to its charm is the famous church, featured in multiple movies, which stands gracefully in the background. During the early mornings and evenings, a wide variety of fresh fish are available in bulk at affordable prices, making it a favorite spot for seafood lovers and local buyers alike.
Diya V — Google review
A rocky beach with large boulders, offering a rugged and tranquil atmosphere. The distant view of the port, combined with a nearby bollard pull test station, adds a unique maritime touch. There's also a mosque close to the viewpoint, enhancing the cultural experience. Occasionally, local policemen visit to educate visitors about the dangers of the deep waters and the importance of staying safe, ensuring everyone enjoys the area without accidents. A great spot for those who appreciate nature, maritime activity, and community care.

very crowded place. touristic restaurant with non autentic food and bad european style food. we expacted much but its not worth it. the are nice places around to visit though, but the beach itself is not very nice. if you are with kids and want action and rent a chair it might be the right one for you, but not if you please a relaxing athmosphere and nature
Kristina H — Google review
Nice beach with great views the landscape looks beautiful with water, sea and coconut trees at the bank with a lot of greenery. It looks more beautiful during sunrise and sunset. Usually it is not busy as other beaches and not famous as others but a good place to visit and see at least for few hours.
