Kumamoto Castle, originally built in 1607, is a reconstructed castle located in the heart of Kumamoto City. It serves as a history museum and stands as a symbol of the city's rich heritage. The castle played a significant role during Japan's Warring States period and continues to be an integral part of Kumamoto's identity.
Kumamoto Castle was my 1st Japanese castle tour, and it was amazing. We arrived just before the last entry at 4pm. Most of the information inside is in Japanese, but it was still a great experience. The tour involves a lot of walking under the sun before reaching the castle, so I recommend bringing an umbrella. It was quite sunny when we went late in September 2025. I also bought myself a souvenir: a gojoin and a gojoincho.

The castle is quite beautiful, but so is many other castles around Japan. While the constructed elevated walkway does take away from the historic look and feel, it does however give a different vantage point to the ground path. There are still many spots where the earthquake damage is “preserved”. The tourist facilities are very well laid out and most staff can speak basic English, and restaurant and snacks stalls are a bit expensive but reasonable for a tourist spot. Worth a visit if you are already coming to Kumamoto, but I wouldn’t bother travelling long distance just to see the castle.

We had one of the most fun castle visits in Kumamoto! My family and I really enjoyed the activities: trying on traditional Samurai clothes while exploring the site, watching the exciting Samurai battle performance, and taking photos in the beautifully designed areas with authentic architecture and house backdrops. The castle itself is a magnificent sight, full of rich history to discover. Everything was well-organized, and the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. Truly a memorable experience!

Kumamoto Castle looks beautiful from the outside and the reconstruction after the 2016 earthquake is impressive. Inside it feels modern, more like a museum about the castle than a place showing how it once looked. There are no traditional rooms or old interiors like in Himeji. There’s also a separate Castle Museum but it can be skipped since the main castle already explains most of the history and the rebuilding process. Great to see from the outside, but not the old Japan vibe I expected.
Rienk S — Google review
The castle is beautiful. I've been to about a dozen castle's in Japan and this one is setup beautifully. The structure is intact and they have nicely laid out artifacts inside. The whole castle area is pretty large so you can explore. Make sure to allocate about 2 hours here if you really enjoy the history behind the castle. There was construction going as you can see in my pictures and so you'll definitely see places that could use fixing up, but it's nice because they seem to be working towards it.
TatteredAllure — Google review
Admission fee 800yen for castle only. There is an app called the KumaCastle which they encouraged you to download. Very easy to use. U can use the app to scan the QR code in each station for a more thorough briefing. Learnt that this castle got affected by the earthquake on 2016 and restoration is still in progress. Looking at how they went on to preserve something so worthy of the effort is heartwarming. Not boring. It’s educational and it’s informative for both adults and kids.
Diana S — Google review
Visiting Kumamoto Castle was one of the most peaceful and moving experiences of my trip to Japan. As I walked toward the castle, the grand black-and-white towers rose above the trees, standing proudly against the sky. Even from a distance, I could feel the strength and spirit of the place. Inside the castle grounds, time seemed to slow down. The stone walls, carefully rebuilt after the earthquake, carry stories of courage and endurance. I found myself pausing often—just to breathe in the quiet air and imagine what life was like centuries ago. It’s amazing how a place that has faced so much destruction can still stand with such dignity and grace. Walking along the pathways lined with old trees, I felt surrounded by both history and hope. The sunlight filtering through the leaves gave the whole place a warm glow, and for a moment, I felt completely at peace. There was no rush, no noise—only the soft sounds of the wind and my own footsteps. Kumamoto Castle reminded me that beauty often comes from strength, and peace can exist even after hardship. I left the castle feeling calm, inspired, and deeply grateful. It is more than just a historic site—it is a symbol of resilience and quiet power. If you ever visit Kumamoto, take time to stand still within those walls and let the spirit of the castle speak to you.

A very well preserved historical monument, and very cleverly and sensitively remodelled to include visual and static exhibits, including modern amenities like walking paths and ramps, and elevators and toilets. Becoming a user friendly and accessible place for everyone. The visual displays and video documentary present very detailed historical and rehabilitation backgrounds, making the visit very interesting and educational.

Shimotori Shopping Arcade is a bustling commercial corridor in Kumamoto, featuring 175 stores and cafes under a glass roof. Divided into Kamitori and Shimotori sections, this 511-meter-long arcade offers a wide range of shopping options including fashion, general goods, and recreational facilities. Visitors can also explore numerous dining venues, bars, and after-dark entertainment options nearby.
A bustling shopping street, which comes to life all the more at night. Enjoyable strolls down the stretch!

Date visited: late Jun 2025. Most of the shops are restaurants- fried stuffs and resulted in oily smell along the arcade. Couple of Pachinko shops. Couple of shops selling stuffs. One shop similar to Dunkee shop duty free. Couple of medical duty free shops. Anyway nothing really interesting to shop. Most shop close at 7 pm-8pm. There is McDonald along the arcade. Quite disappointed as the arcade is filled with cooking oil smells - overnight cooking oil smell. I just want to leave as fast as possible. I thought would be better in other section but sad to say due to many stores are restaurants selling fried stuffs, the smells just stay along the entire arcade. There is nothing interesting to take pictures for this arcade.
SiewHong P — Google review
Came on weekday evening and find this place relatively quiet. Nothing much to see. Pretty may similar shops.

We visited a number of shopping streets in Kyushu and this must be the busiest. A wide and long walking street where shops were located at both side of the alley. There were small little alleys that would lead to some local restaurants and eateries as well. The family had fun shopping here where managed to find the popular Japanese pharmacy, don don donki, some street food and even a shop selling local porcelain kitchen ware and wooden kitchen items, all made in Japan. There were some common fast food restaurant like McDonald’s and Starbucks located along this street too. I even managed to find a good taiyaki snack bar here which tasted awesome, crispy on the outside. I would say one would need to allocate at least two hours for shopping here.

Nice place to walk around with lots of shops and restaurants. Very easy to explore, but many stores close a bit early — come in the afternoon or early evening for the best experience.
Maleena W — Google review
You could still find plenty of restaurants along the street even after like 8 or 9pm. Though it would be better to come and shop during the day.

Every big city has an 'outdoor' covered shopping arcade, a place to hide from the rain or escape a mid-summer sun. Plenty of shops and adventurous tiny hidden alley ways leading to small cafes and diners. 2015 and there was good public Wi-Fi so we were unable to ditch dead weight children.

Tsuruya Department Store, a long-standing establishment in Kumamoto since 1952, maintains its classic exterior while housing one of the largest shopping floors in the country. It prides itself on offering a high-quality and elegant lifestyle through locally-rooted shops and products. The store features a wide range of high-quality items from fashion to food, as well as a food court on the basement floor and restaurants on the 7th floor.
I just had a fantastic lunch at a restaurant inside! The host was so welcoming and even placed me in a better seat that opened up, with a view of their Japanese garden. The food was delicious and great value for the soba and tempura set meal I ordered. But most importantly the host and staff made me feel so welcome and happy. I have visited Kumamoto twice and plan to come back to this department store and restaurant again! See my attached photos for the name and menu. Restaurant is on the seventh level of the main building There are a couple of buildings connected so if you have difficulty please ask information so ensure you are in the right building. The department store itself is very nice and full service, with a helpful information desk at the main entrance and even actual elevator staff who provide info and operate the elevator for you! If you are someone who values that level of service and consideration in business, i would definitely pay a visit to Kumamoto and to Tsuruya!

Date visited end June 2025. Just like standard shopping center with two basement for food takeaways and pastries. Then different floors selling clothes etc. no food court. There is one supermarket but not a big one. I took pictures only on some stalls as most of them are similar to the standard shopping centers in Taiwan. The Kumamoto store is also within the same building.

If you want to shake hands with Kumamon, famous mascot of Kumamoto city, this is the place. A big department store located in the city of the town, close to walking street and fifteen minutes walk to visit Kumamoto castle.

I like the roof floor which is floor particularly for kids. At 7/F, there is a designated zone for kids too. It’s an old school shopping mall with quite a few shops of high end brand. In general, it’s children friendly.
Galleo C — Google review
After enjoying the nature at Takachiho Gorge, we stopped by Tsuruya Department Store, which was super convenient. This mall has a great variety of items, from well-known brands to daily goods—perfect for one-stop shopping. However, navigating inside the mall can be a bit confusing, especially when moving between the two buildings. The connecting paths are on different levels, so keep an eye on the signs or ask the staff for directions—it really helps. Overall, if you have time and want a wide selection of products, Tsuruya is definitely worth a visit!
Maleena W — Google review
If you’re looking for high end brands, come here! I found some Dior and Chanel store at the first floor. Don’t forget to come at the basement because that’s a a lot of food stalls inside

The Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Crafts Center is a showcase of local handicrafts, featuring traditional metalwork, ceramics, woodwork, bamboo crafts, dyeing and weaving, paper products, and traditional toys. Visitors can explore the creative output of generations of local artisans. However, it's important to note that the items are for sale and may be on the pricier side. The center is not recommended for young children who may have trouble resisting touching the delicate crafts.

A fascinating museum to learn and appreciate the history and aesthetics of Kumamoto’s handicraft and artisans! But it might be a bit commercial to some people’s liking as the museum seemed to place too much emphasis on the business instead of promotion of the local arts! But I must frankly admit that priciness aside, the items sold in souvenirs store were beyond beautiful!

Nice examples of handmade goods, which you can also buy. Of course price is a bit higher. They offered me here free coffee with a small cake which was a nice surprise.

Reigando Cave, situated in Kumamoto, Japan, is a place of great historical and cultural significance. It holds the distinction of being where the renowned samurai Miyamoto Musashi wrote the final chapter of 'The Book of Five Rings.' Nestled on the western side of Mount Kimpo, this natural cave offers visitors a tranquil atmosphere and a chance to explore the space where Musashi spent his last days.
The entrance to the cave must go through the Unganzenji temple. It's not that hard to visit here. Just find the way to Sakuramachi Bus Terminal and get on the U3-1 bus at 10:30am (ask the info counter to make sure). Then drop at Iwado Kannon Iriguchi stop and walk up the hill around 20-30 mins. You can get the bus back to town at the same stop at 02:41pm. If you're Musashi's fan, it's worth to visit indeed.
Chanin H — Google review
Wonderful serene place with a cool history to it. Please be sure to read up on it first. There are a few spots to see and it was very quiet and beautiful. The area is great for hiking but I had no offline map and no reception so I chickened out. Please prepare accordingly and mind the public transport is somewhat limited be sure to know the times.
Siemon S — Google review
If you're into the history, this cave is worthwhile trip. It costs 300 yen to enter and the gentleman there was very kind and helpful. It's a very peaceful area with great history. Be prepared to walk a while from the bus stop if you don't have a car. Also, the busses only go every couple of hours so a taxi may be needed. It is well worth the trip to get there.
Tristan J — Google review
I used public transport. From bus stop till the entrance of the temple, it was about 20mins worth of walking up slope. Not sure if it’s because I fell sick a few days ago and have not yet recovered or what, but that walk felt like a hike. If you have access to a motorised vehicle, please just use that. Once you’re up there though, it’s really quiet and peaceful. Absolutely no one. Entrance to the cave requires entrance fee - 300yen. Here i need to warn everyone that there are several flight of steps, both up and down, to get to the actual cave. And they are steep and very uneven. So uneven that one of the steps is almost like a slippery slope sliding down to the step below it. And i unfortunately stepped on that, and slipped and fell. Got some nasty scratches on my legs and sprained my wrist. :( Hold on to the rails for your life. Or wear better shoes with grippier outsoles. I think it’s a me problem though since others don’t seem to be having this issue. Also noticed several spider silk in the way like across the stairs. Just be careful of running into spiders. Be sure to check the bus timings if you’re coming by public transport - they have very limited trips in a day. Download taxi apps like GO in advance just in case.
Lihui H — Google review
Nice temple, the road to the cave is short and easy and is covered with many many statues, each with individual design. The cave itself is very spiritual and provokes to sit and think a little about what and why you are doing in your life. Recommended to go in the morning not to ruin the solo travel
Anton G — Google review
If you are into history and know about Miyamoto Musashi, this cave is a must visit. It is small but gorgeous. However, be aware that the cave is quite far from Kumamoto Station and the bus is hard to reach and time. I went by taxi and on my way back I met Chris from US who offered to drive my back to Kumamoto Station. Thanks again Chris! Should you ever come to Zurich, let me know, I will show you around.

Sakura-no-baba Josaien is a vibrant tourist district located in the Sakuranobaba area of Kumamoto Castle. It features an extensive shopping arcade, numerous restaurants and cafes, and cultural exhibits that showcase Kumamoto's rich history and heritage.
Recommend to stop by here if visiting the Kumamoto castle. Sure, it’s catered for tourists and a bit more pricey but they are basically serving you Kumamoto on a plate. Souvenirs, local specialities, museums, and occasionally an English sign or two. It’s not very big but it’s like 10 minutes away from the castle so might as well stop by. Bought my castle tickets here.
Helena W — Google review
I came here in the evening after visiting the castle. It is obviously built for tourists so prices can be a bit higher here. But also you will be able to find unique food like horse meat here, and also omiyage from the Kumamoto region. Was not crowded because I arrived quite late.
狐鸣 — Google review
The food here is low quality and expensive. It is better to come here after having a meal at the nearby mall's food court. Definition of a tourist trap. But you can still enjoy the scenery and old aesthetic without buying any food. The Kumamoto Castle ticketing area is here too, you can buy tickets and ticket packages for the castle and museums. This area feels too commercialized, lacking many of the traditional feeling. You can also print a Kumamoto Castle coin with engraving for 630 yen
ItzMe — Google review
Not a big area. Mainly restaurants. One gift shop. Walking around here takes 10 mins unless you go for the VR or wearing costumes to walk around and take pictures. Enjoy the ancient feel with the architectural style.

One of nice spots to visit when you are visiting Kumamoto Castle, it is near the castle, and close to bus stop that will take you back to the town. Here, there are lots of local shops and restaurants.
Khoong Y — Google review
Visited in July 2025 Back in the day, the site was a stable for the troops stationed in the castle. But now the days of horse transportation is long gone and it has been repurposed as a tourist center. The Wakuwakuza museum is inside the complex as well. Due to the absence of any real food courts or shopping centers nearby and around the castle area (the city's major shopping arcade is 500+ meters away), the price of the foods here are way more expensive, borderline tourist trap level even. That being said, there are some items I found interesting. For instance, there is one stall that sells anything horse meat, from croquette, sausage on skewer, and even sushi. Forgot to ask whether the latter is grilled or raw horse meat on sushi rice (seems to be on the former). Another sells some Kumamon-shaped cake with some filling. AFAIK there's one shuttle bus running between the place and Kumamoto Station.
Lontongstroong — Google review
This place could get busy at times, specially on weekend where there are many tourists but it is still tolerable. The place is nice and has different stores that offer food and drinks. I particularly love the matcha store there. Offers great variety of food and has available seats on the side. Local sellers are welcoming and very kind. At times, there are presentations in the morning and afternoon, I am not so sure about the schedule and if it is something seasonal. I believe local sellers are used to meeting foreigners and despite the fact that most of them dont speak English, they still try to be patient and warm. I have not tried the restaurants there but will try my best to visit it next time. Added some photos at night

SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto is a vibrant and modern shopping complex located in the heart of Kumamoto city. It features a diverse range of brand-name stores, dining options, and even a rooftop park. Visitors can enjoy a unique shopping experience with various shops to explore. The complex also houses a Kumamon shop, perfect for fans of the popular mascot. Additionally, SAKURA MACHI serves as a central hub with its bus terminal connecting the city center to all corners of Kumamoto.
Sakuramachi is a convenient location for locals, travelers, and shoppers alike. It offers a great balance of shopping, relaxation, and transport convenience, making it a one-stop destination for everyone. What sets it apart is the rooftop garden which features a massive Kumamon, Kumamoto Prefecture’s famous mascot. Kumamoto’s beloved mascot adds a fun and instagram-worthy element. This and the green space add a special touch that makes Sakuramachi unique. However, one issue often pointed out is the parking space, which is quite expensive. But despite this setback, it is still a highly recommended spot for locals and tourists.

Loved this place very much! Went many times during our 4-day stay in Kumamoto. Kids did their painting on the car and bus as part of the game in front of the building.

During my visit to Kumamoto, have visited the Sakuramachi place very convenient location with Kumamoto Castle in the near by and it is very of the center point for the tourist as well as local people to relax, do the shopping and enjoy the food. When I visited, there was Taiwan fare going on just outside the place and it was very energetic atmosphere. Must visit the place when there, during the June timings you can see the Hydrangea flowers and an amazing rooftop view of the Kumamoto castle as well.

Perfect place to hang around! What i loved the most is, There’s a lot of restaurants to eat too! depends on your type 😜
Jydee D — Google review
The mall has decent shopping options, but then again nothing much that really shouts uniqueness. That said, it's well put together, modern, and well organised. Would've been good to have more unique food options available though, we found ourselves mainly heading out for food and only dropping by for Family Mart and Daiso.
Jonathan C — Google review
End June 2025. It is excellent place with strategic location- it is near the shopping arcade, the castle and some other tourist spots. It itself is a shopping mall with food court, supermarket and restaurants. Better still it is connected to bus terminals where you can take buses to airport and couple of other places. It has a rooftop garden where you can enjoy walking around and look at different views. There is also an eatery shop in the garden and a small interesting shallow pool for kids to play with water. Entrance is free✌️. Koko hotel is together with this shopping mall. There is a tram stop just next to this mall. You can find Daisu shop in here too.
SiewHong P — Google review
Sakura Machi Mall has various shops inside it. In my country, malls are really big but I dont know if it is already considered big in Japan. I like the fact that this is not just a building but it has trees and plants too. You can enjoy your favorite drink outside there are seats provided and on the top floor is a playground for children and a place where you could relax while seeing nature. Occasionally, there are exhibits of food stalls outside the mall where you can enjoy food, music and other stuff. Toilets are clean too and there are wide selection of food in the B1. Bus Terminals are also very reliable, it has an updated schedule and signages are everywhere. I would say it is a foreigner- friendly mall, signages are in English and announcements are in English, Korean and Chinese.

The mall offers a wide range of shops, some of which offer significant discounts on branded products during specific periods. A Family-Friendly Wonderland of Fun and Exploration Aeon Mall is a true haven for families seeking a delightful day out. This sprawling complex offers far more than just shopping and dining. It's an immersive experience tailored for kids and adults alike. From interactive play areas to educational exhibits, little ones are kept endlessly entertained. Meanwhile, parents can indulge in retail therapy or savor diverse culinary delights. The spacious, stroller-friendly layout and numerous family-friendly amenities make it a breeze to navigate. However, don’t expect the restaurants have the best food, it is an average.

Its pretty standard Japanese Aeon mall. Unless you have kids or are dying of starvation, not a bit of food you would want to wait to eat. Movie theatre is decent. Some okay clothing stores. Lots of capsule machines... Parking can be insane on a weekend. Japan hasn't gotten the memo that malls are dead.

Coffee shop
Kitagawa Tenmendo is a renowned traditional Japanese sweet shop that specializes in wagashi, which are traditional Japanese sweets designed to be enjoyed with tea. These sweets are made from ingredients like azuki (red beans), mochi (rice), and fruit, and are known for their simple yet elegant flavors. The presentation of these treats is considered an art form, making them not only delicious but also visually stunning.
Tenmeido was a wonderful experience. We booked the sweets making workshop by phone. Although the master was absent at the time, his daughter (who speaks English and Spanish and manages the business) went out and above to make sure we could still participate during our single day in Kumamoto - she invited the master of another cafe nearby and friend of her father, who trained us how to make flowers and clementines. Everything was so genuine, beautiful and sweet that we couldn't leave unhappy!
Daniel L — Google review
Kitagawa Tenmeidou is a shop you must visit if you are in the area for dessert lovers. Wagashis, beautifully crafted into seasonal motifs, entices the eyes first then swiftly melts in your mouth; and makes one think, ah, this must be how happiness tastes like. You almost don't want to eat them because they are so pretty. The chocolate Swiss roll fluffy and filled with a light cream, with some cocoa nibs within; the pudding smooth and silky with a fragrant caramel sauce which was not too sweet; a perfect match with black coffee / matcha. Unfortunately we could not try everything in one seating. We however managed picked up souvenirs and their strawberry daifuku, sake castella cake, and several others for takeaway. All are outstanding. The goods are freshly made, one should observe the expiry dates that are clearly shown. They also offer wagashi classes for those who are interested. Very friendly and helpful grandma and daughter!
Benjamin A — Google review
Not just a lovely Japanese sweets and cake shop. You can also do a really fun and memorable wagashi making experience here! We got to make 2 different nerikiri wagashi and had a display of wagashi making from Mr Kitagawa (the master of the shop) then enjoyed his beautiful wagashi with matcha tea. Mr Kitagawa's daughter can speak Spanish and English so it was very easy to make a booking. (Just send an email through the website)
Explore K — Google review
Super delicious wagashi, tea and cakes, as well as lots of pre-packaged desserts and gift sets to take home. They have a lovely tea room in the back where you can eat as well. I also did the wagashi class and it was amazing! A master craftsman with 50 years experience teaches you how to make two wagashi based on seasonal shapes. Takes about an hour and you get to have some there and take what you made home. Super great experience, would recommend (they can also translate to English and Spanish)

We visited Kumamon Village during our time in Kumamoto and it was such a cute and cheerful stop, especially for fans of Kumamon. It’s located on the second floor of the Sakura-machi Kumamoto shopping complex, right next to the bus terminal and tourist information center, so it was really easy to find. The space isn’t very big, but it’s packed with Kumamon-themed fun. As soon as we walked in, we were surrounded by shelves of plush toys, snacks, keychains, stationery, and all sorts of adorable souvenirs. Prices were a little on the higher side, but that’s to be expected for official character goods. They even had a ranking chart for the most popular items, which helped us decide what to bring home. We ended up buying more than we planned! There’s a small café corner where you can grab Kumamon-shaped soft-serve ice cream and other themed treats. We didn’t try everything, but the soft serve was fun to look at and surprisingly tasty too. We had hoped to catch the live Kumamon performance, but unfortunately the timing didn’t work out and we missed it. It’s something we’d definitely try to catch next time—I’ve heard the shows are really entertaining and even non-Japanese speakers enjoy them. Overall, it was a fun and lighthearted stop. We probably spent about 30 to 45 minutes browsing, shopping, and enjoying the atmosphere. If you’re in Kumamoto and like cute character goods (or have kids with you), it’s definitely worth a visit—even if just for the photos and snacks.

Worst experience in Japan. I wanted to use the currency exchange to get yens so i came to use the currency machine. It was stated as open on google maps but because the shop closed before, it seems they closed at 18h00 without warning. Finally a staff opened it and i tried to exchange my money from my credit card. Even when there was a card slot on the machine, it didn't work. When i asked the staff for help, she said it was not possible, checked for an other in the area and said there was no currency exchange opened. So i asked if i could exchange directly at the store. She answered that she would check outside with me. Suddenly as i was going outside, she locked the door from inside without saying a word, no explanation. I had been all the time polite, just trying to buy the currency exchange i needed, but this store staff gave it back by being so disrespectful. If you think respect is the bare minimum, please don't even try to come to this store.

Located in the Shinshigai Shopping Street of Kumamoto's city center, Katsuretsu Tei is a well-known pork cutlet eatery. The restaurant is popular among locals for its high-quality pork dishes. While some diners found the pork loin to be tender but slightly dry, others were less impressed with the deep-fried oysters.
This Tonkatsu is truly Michelin-worthy. Absolutely delicious! The pork was clearly properly bled, so there’s no unpleasant smell. Even though they used a tougher cut of meat, it was surprisingly tender — you can really feel how much care the chef puts into it.

I was really skeptical before dining as the reviews were mixed. Came at 445pm and there’s still a queue. Waited for about 30 mins for the table and 20 mins for food. Theres plenty of empty seats but not enough staff to clear the tables and move the queue. There’s also 150 yen difference between English menu and Japanese menu. So we referred to the Japanese menu. The meat was surprisingly tender and melt in your mouth. Wasn’t expecting the tenderness. Worth the experience if you don’t mind waiting. Come early! And by 8pm all the queue slots would have been snapped up

I give this restaurant 5 out of 5 stars. I ordered menu 1, the classic pork loin tonkatsu set. The cutlet itself is outstanding. The coating is very crisp and light, but not hard, and the meat inside is juicy, tender and full of clean pork flavour. There is a gentle richness from the fat, but it never becomes heavy. This is the kind of tonkatsu that reminds you why this dish can be a favourite for years. What makes the meal truly special is everything that comes with it and the way you are guided to eat it. You receive a bowl with sesame seeds and a small wooden pestle. Grinding the sesame at the table already smells wonderful. When you mix these freshly ground seeds with the house Japanese Wafu sauce, you get a deep, nutty and slightly fruity tonkatsu sauce that clings perfectly to the meat. Add a little of the sharp yellow mustard horseradish and the flavour opens up even more. One bite of pork with this sesame Wafu sauce and mustard already feels very complete. The cabbage salad on the side is very finely shredded and extremely fresh. It gives crunch and lightness to every bite. I used the yuzu dressing for the cabbage. This dressing has a bright citrus aroma, gentle acidity and a little sweetness, so it cuts through the richness of the pork and keeps the meal balanced. Rice and miso soup complete the set. The rice is glossy, sticky in the right way and seasoned just enough by the sauces you let drip onto it. The miso soup is on the darker side, pleasantly salty, with a comforting depth rather than just plain broth. There are also Japanese pickles and grated daikon on the table. The pickles bring a classic sour and salty contrast. Even if you do not eat many of them, they show how carefully the set is put together. The grated daikon works beautifully with the sauces and with the pork if you want a fresher, lighter bite. The variety of condiments on the table lets you create many different versions of tonkatsu during one meal, from rich and sweet to bright and sharp, and all of them work. The atmosphere is warm and cosy with dark wood tables and all the bottles and small pots arranged in front of you. It feels like a place that takes tonkatsu very seriously but still stays relaxed. The staff are incredibly efficient and kind at the same time. Tables are cleaned and reset almost immediately, orders move from kitchen to guests with impressive speed, and still the servers remain attentive and friendly. You can feel that the whole team knows exactly what they are doing. This meal reminded me why tonkatsu used to be my absolute favourite food and it brought that feeling back completely. Perfectly fried meat, carefully chosen sauces, fresh sides and a very professional but warm service. For anyone who loves tonkatsu or wants to understand how good it can be, this restaurant is an essential visit.

Absolutely worth the wait! Although the queue usually takes around an hour, I was lucky to get a seat within 20 minutes. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy inside — one of the best I’ve ever had in Japan. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves authentic tonkatsu!
Joon T — Google review
The Tonkatsu served here is absolutely delicious, the pork cutlet is cooked just right retaining the softness and juiciness on the inside with a light crispy batter on the outside 😋 You must try this if you are in Kumamoto!
KC C — Google review
So good that we didn't even take pictures. Free tea refills (there's a carafe at your table). Free Cabbage, miso, and rice refills. The tenderloin donkatsu was the best since we liked the leaner cut and more meat. The yuzu sherbert was really refreshing and Fruity, pretty icy tho. My boyfriend liked the black sesame ice cream because it was so creamy and reminded him of oreo ice cream. They were extremely busy and were a bit slow with us due to the heavy flow of patrons. But overall it was great service and lots of English menu options and speakers. Making the sauce was fun the Japanese style
Allison L — Google review
Went for lunch. There was a queue, but it moved fast. Note that lunch sets are only in the Japanese menu. The Roppaku Kurubuta lunch set is more expensive than the other lunch sets, but it was worth it. It was the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had—it almost felt like the wagyu beef of pork. The cutlet was very crisp, while the fillet had just the right amount of fat

Date visited end June 2025. Google map said I have reached but I didn’t see any sign. It is actually inside the same building as the shopping Centre which is located next to shopping arcade. A very small shop selling Kumamoto signature stuffs. A small stage where the bear mascot will perform at 11 and at 2pm. Enter into the shopping malls and you can see directions to reach this small shop. A very small place - in less than five minutes I am done. Things aren’t that cheap either. Kids may like it to dance with the bear. I walked around basements of the shopping malls instead to enjoy the aircon when it is so hot outside.

Come here to meet the famous mascot of Kumamoto, a black bear called Kumamon. Pokemon is yellow, Kumamon is black ... Obviously. Please check the time schedule if you want to see the live kumamon show.
Otto L — Google review
I stumbled upon this charming little shop tucked away in a quiet Japanese alley. The space is tiny, but it's absolutely packed from floor to ceiling with exquisite traditional crafts and unique souvenirs—a true feast for the eyes. You can feel the artisan's dedication in every single piece. However, be prepared for the prices. They are quite high, reflecting the incredible quality and artistry. The shop is also very narrow, so it can feel a bit cramped with just a few customers inside. It's the perfect spot to find a truly special keepsake, but not ideal for budget souvenir hunting.
Kelvin — Google review
Hordes of tourists come here to see the Kumamon show, which is more suited for kids. If you want to catch the show, be sure to check the schedule and start lining up at least 30 mins early if you want a front row spot. Outside of the show times, it feels like a generic tourist/souvenir shop.

Watching Kumamon was a really nice experience. It was fun and I was like a kid again. Worth the wait.

It's not a square. It's a SMALL store. The merchandise sold here can be found elsewhere at a much cheaper price. The only interesting thing about this place is they have kumamon on stage at certain timings. This would be great for kids to greet kumamon, I supposed.

Kumamoto Station is a modern and efficient transportation hub located in Kumamoto City, Japan. It serves as a central point for both local commuters and tourists exploring the region. The station's sleek and spacious design offers a comfortable environment for travelers. Nearby, the City Tram provides easy access to major destinations such as Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Jojuen Garden, making it convenient for tourists to get around the city.
A well organized and efficient train station, just like many others in Japan. The station is very clean, with clear signage making it easy to navigate. Everything runs smoothly, and the trains are punctual. There are several shops and restaurants inside, making it convenient for travelers to grab a meal or a quick snack. The staff are helpful, and the overall atmosphere is calm and orderly. A reliable starting point for exploring Kumamoto and beyond.

Kumamoto is a beautiful and peaceful city. Been here and i was in love with how nice everything feels. I wish i could come back with more time. The station is beautiful, full of history and culture and delicious treats to take them as Omiyage.

Kumamoto Station is not far from the city center. It takes about 10 minutes by taxi and 20 minutes by tram. Dining, shopping and transport options are plentiful in and around the station. A market with souvenir and food stalls is located inside the station. In front of the Shirakawa (East) Exit is a shopping mall and an electronics store. There's also a tram stop, a taxi stand, and bus stops for the airport limousine, local & long distance buses. There is another taxi stand at the West Exit, which is closer to the Shinkansen ticket gates and platforms.

Visited in July 2025 This main train station is located at the edge of the downtown and it's separated by some distance from the core commercial district area of K̶u̶m̶a̶m̶o̶n̶ ̶C̶i̶t̶y̶ Kumamoto. To get to there, such as the castle district, one can take a tram ride from a stop in front of the station. It's served not only by a shinkansen line, but also a few conventional train lines, going outward to all directions (north, south, as well as to the east all the way to Aso and Oita). The station itself is easy to navigate since all of the platforms are aligned in parallel manner. There's also an interesting cluster of eateries, some sell interesting items like horse meat dishes, and souvenir shops just outside the turnstile (caution: it's all Kumamon LOL, what do you expect). AFAIK there's no coin locker right in front of these turnstiles and one is located inside this tourist information center.

JR Kumamoto Station may be small, but it’s full of charm and interesting things to see. Right away, you’re greeted by Kumamon, Kumamoto’s iconic bear mascot—he’s everywhere, adding a fun and playful vibe to the station. The atmosphere here is warm and welcoming. There are plenty of restaurants and food stalls, making it a great spot to grab a bite. It’s also a convenient place to shop for souvenirs before heading out. During our visit, we were lucky to catch a live performance by a high school band just outside the station—an unexpected and delightful experience that made our stop even more memorable.

I think 'Kumamoto Station' is a very unique station. Its platforms 4, 5 (dead end), and 6 use the same island platform. The same platform style is used for platforms 1, 2 (dead end), and 3. It was the first time I saw such a style of the platform.

Between castle towers and volcanic ash, Kumamoto stands proud and patient. The city glows golden at sunset; trams rattle gently through tree-lined streets. The Shinkansen slides in like a brushstroke on old paper — soft yet strong. Here, history and courage share the same breath. Tourist Tip: Transfer to trams for Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Garden. Try horse sashimi, spicy lotus root, and basashi ramen. A city rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake — resilient and welcoming.

Keika Ramen is a renowned Kumamoto ramen restaurant with branches in Tokyo. Their classic dish, the Keika Ramen, features a rich and creamy soup made from carefully selected pork bones, chicken bones, and Ako salt. The shop's secret lies in using garlic oil to enhance the flavor of their ramen. Located on the 1st floor of a building facing Sakae Street, it has become popular nationwide due to its delicious offerings.
Taste super good to me. The belly fat pork chunk is really really good. Fried rice is super good as well. Everything feels retro and with history, from the billboard outside the resto to the container to hold chopsticks.

Ramen taste normal, char siew so thin. The broth too salty. Gyoza was ordinary. Everything is ordinary but still edible.
Willie L — Google review
Trying THE Kumamoto ramen and the place wasn’t crowded on a Wednesday evening. Saw the 3.9 star rating and decided on this place over the 3.6 star for a somewhat similar ramen offering. The ramen had a depth in flavor thanks to the black garlic and they also had spicy options. They had an option to add on the set for like 500¥ with white rice and 800¥ with fried rice. You can also choose gyoza or fried pork for sides. If you are going as a couple, I would recommend getting one set to share as you can see their portions are huge! It’s located just off the shopping arcade area so it’s easy to find - parking is fairly expensive in this part of town so we parked around a 8min walk from this store and it costs us only 100¥ for 50mins compared to the 100¥ for 20 mins nearby. Take your pick of ramen from this street as there are so many choices. Choose what you fancy, but we wanted to try the local ramen.

Dived into the food and forgot to take a photo first, it smelled too good and it was delicious! The soup has an appetite opening sesame possibly garlic infused scent, the soup is not thick like hakata tonkotsu- it was light and soupy, on the saltier side and full of flavour. The cuts of meat were thick and generous. We enjoyed it! Very affordable and delicious meal ☺️ also had the fried rice which had very good flavour and strong wok hei- exactly how you’d want fried rice to taste! Staff could tell we were tourists! After ordering at the vending machine they directed us to our seat where they had placed ice cold cups of black tea for us, thought it was such a thoughtful gesture 🥰

The soup is very very salty. The portion is big. It is not really tasty but can make you full. I guess that’s the style of Kumamoto ramen. If working in hard labor all day long and starving, I would appreciate this kind of food more.

This is the best ice cream I've ever had. I wasn't a fan of red bean sauce due to its sweetness but this ice cream changed my mind. The rich, creamy ice cream pairs with the red bean perfectly! (Translated by Google) This is a famous shop for Kumamoto's famous sweets Jindaiko and Mushaotoshi. I was curious about the Jintaiko soft serve, so I asked for it, and to my surprise, they had cut up real Jintaiko and mixed it into the soft serve ice cream! It's quite shocking, but it's definitely called Jintaiko Soft. . Of course it tasted delicious. The sweetness of the red bean paste and the texture of the gyuhi were good, giving it a taste typical of a Japanese sweets shop. However, I like the texture of jindaiko, so I want to eat soft serve ice cream and jindaiko separately. If you buy Jintaiko alone, it costs 216 yen, so you can eat it for less than half the price of Jintaiko soft serve. It's a new mall in Kumamoto. It's not that big like most department store, but has 4 floors with various stores in it. It has one floor dedicated for MUJI (brand), one of the most complete MUJI Store I have found so far (they have the MUJI book store and cafe).

Quite new shopping mall in Shimotori, downtown Kumamoto, with variety of stores. Basement: supermarket with a wide variety of products, including imported ones. Really nice alcohol section! 1st floor: a Brioche Dore cafe and clothing stores. 2nd floor: beauty products, clothing. 3rd floor: nice stationary store, clothes, Japanese items, Yogibo (those huge body pillows, bean bags) 4th floor: Muji store with a Muji café where you can have a really nice lunch set. 5th floor: blood bank and a cooking studio.

Foodpal Kumamoto is a hidden gem for food and sweets, offering locally grown vegetables, seafood, meat, and souvenirs at the fresh market. Nagata Bread features a small restaurant with affordable bread, while Sugi Bee Garden offers delicious ice cream and honey samples. The Rose Festival in May and November is a must-visit for flower enthusiasts. Additionally, visitors can enjoy flea markets during the rose season and indulge in Hachimitsuya's delectable soft-serve ice cream.
Dropped by on a weekend around 5:30 PM, and most of the shops were already winding down (pro tip: come earlier if you want the full experience). Still, it was totally worth the visit. Tried the Sugi Bee soft cream — honestly superb. Light, creamy, and kissed with honey… 10/10 would eat again. Also got a free taste of their peach honey at the Honey Factory — sweet, floral, and surprisingly refreshing. The whole place has a laid-back, park-like vibe, with open spaces and a relaxed pace that makes it perfect for a slow stroll or a quiet snack stop. Not crowded when I went, and even with some shops closed, it felt peaceful and friendly. Great little detour if you’re in the area — especially for honey lovers or anyone needing a mellow break.

The ambiance is perfect - soft lighting, comfortable seating create an inviting atmosphere that is ideal for unwinding or catching up with friends. The staff are friendly and skilled. However, it's worth noting that the drink sizes are on the smaller side especially for cold drinks, which might leave you craving more. They have limited food to choose from but it was delicious. I’ve been wanting to go to this cafe for a long time. Today I did it. You make your order at the counter. If you choose drop coffee; they have three kinds of coffee beans to chose from. I ordered Brazilian coffee. Not acidic and tastes good. I got banana pound cake; it tastes as a homemade banana cake but the portion is very small. If you are lactose intolerant they offer soy milk for 100¥extra. The cafe is kinda big. It has front sitting, inside, outside and a roof sitting area. The inside area has an AC (not strong, which is good). What I did not like is that the outside area and roof don’t have even a fan ( with Kumamoto humid weather it is just impossible). They offer wifi but it works just in the inside area where the counter is.

Service was extremely friendly - staff switching between Japanese and English was really accommodating. Plenty of space inside and outside, and nice options for drinks. It felt like the patrons and staff knew each other well and had established positive relationships.

I have used it many times, but the ordering method has changed to a tablet. Up until now, I had to be careful when calling for a staff member in a crowded place, but now that I have a tablet, I can order smoothly without having to worry. For lunch, I ordered loin cutlet and chicken cutlet. The rice is white rice and barley rice! ? You can choose between red miso or white miso for the miso soup, and shredded or chopped cabbage! ? You can choose from. You can easily select from your tablet. There are some restaurants specializing in tonkatsu that are delicious, but Hamakatsu is just as delicious and I think the cost performance is high considering the price. You can get refills of rice, cabbage, miso soup, and pickled vegetables, and the delicious dishes will fill you up. By the way, there are two types of cabbage dressing, so you can enjoy different flavors. Sakuramachi Bus Terminal, located in Sakuramachi Kumamoto, is a modern and convenient transportation hub. Buses are a popular choice for traveling around Kumamoto, offering express services to the airport and Hakata. The terminal is situated within a mall with various amenities, including restaurants and shops. Visitors can also find the Kumamon Village in this building. The information and bus reception desk are on the 2nd floor, while ticket counters operate during specific hours.
Our bus from fukuoka stopped here. Then this was also our departure point to go to kumamoto castle, kumamoto port and takachiho gorge. Really organized and connected to a larger mall complex.

June 2025. It is connected to the Sakuramachi shopping mall. Pretty easy to find the terminals. To go airport, checking the time of airport bus, there is a bus ticketing counter on second floor and you can ask for timetable. Different schedules for Weekday and weekends. The way to terminals are very clearly marked on the second floor of the shopping area. Very well done. The ticket to airport, buy at the vending machine on the place where you line up for the bus.

Sakuramachi Bus Terminal, located in the heart of Kumamoto City, is a modern and well-organized transportation hub. Connected to the Sakuramachi Kumamoto shopping complex, it provides convenient access to various bus routes, including long-distance buses and local city lines. The terminal is a key transit point for travelers exploring Kumamoto Prefecture and beyond.

The Sakuramachi Bus Terminal felt very modern and clean (visit May 2023). It was conveniently located within a mall with everything you could need. There were many tasty restaurants in the basement and a lot of shops on the other floors. There was a Kumamoto food fair when I went in May 2023 with many famous Kumamoto pop up restaurants in the basement. The Kumamon Village was located in this building. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. The bus terminal is a few minutes walk to the Kumamoto Castle and the long distance buses allow you to go directly to Fukuoka.

I want to say big THANK YOU to 2 awesome and fantastic ladies at Sakuramachi Bus Information Desk (Ticket office) on 2nd floor... (I think one of them is the manager). Both are very kind, professional and helpful. I missed the last bus to Kurokawa Onsen while waiting in line at the wrong side, and both ladies were very kind and helpful. They help to figure out alternative way to kurokawa onsen, help to call my hotel there, the very kind manager even wrote down all the details for me. And they refunded my bus ticket even before I asked for it. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Gluck Coffee Spot, located in the alley of Kumamoto city, is a delightful café that takes pride in roasting its own beans on-site. The name "Gluck" translates to happiness, and this spot aims to bring joy through the perfect cup of coffee. The spacious and bright café offers a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal place for work or relaxation. Visitors appreciate the exquisite food options and rave about the delicious cakes, particularly recommending the Cheese Cake and Matcha Chocolate.
Atmosphere and interior are amazing. My dream coffeeshop, price was a bit crazy for oat latte but it worth it when I tasted. Best coffee I tried in 2025, texture of latte is so crazy, so smooth….😳 and I thought they put sugar in it but he said no never sugar in it. Taste so sweet. Amazing

This coffee joint is a real specialty coffee shop. I’d tried Costa Rica hand drip coffee, latte and the red bean paste toast, and they are all perfect. Also the atmosphere is neat and delightful. If I’ll ever go to Kumamoto again, this is the only reason. Hats off to the owner/barista.

Nice little coffee shop along one of the side streets near our hotel. Breakfast meals were simple but tasty. We ordered a cheese toast with salad, and a red bean toast with butter. The coffee were aromatic and smooth and we can see how much effort and precision the 2 lady owners have put in effort to maintain it's standard. Definitely worth a visit though the price may be on the higher side for the local context, but certainly affordable considering the prices back in Adelaide.
Hun T — Google review
Easy to find. The place is a quiet, renovated from an old house, with thoughtful touches. They’ve got a good selection of pour-over coffees, mostly light roasts, priced around 800-900 yuen. The Costa Rica one is impressive, starts with a slight tang, then blooms with bright coffee flavor. The latte was solid too, the milk they use is of high quality. We also ordered toast, worth trying.
Jeremy J — Google review
A friend recommended this place. The hand-brewed coffee has a rich flavor. But latte is terrible. I brought a lot of beans for my friend and I. The store said buy one beans, get one free coffee. It actually said one order, get one coffee. I only realized that after looking back at the receipt. I'm not sure what the owner meant by that. I was disgusted. It's so vague, I might as well not give it away. My friends who recommended it to me were all shocked by this rule. It's better to buy less than more. I probably won't come back.

Mr. ビラル was awesome! He saved us a ton of money and time, when we were just about to leave empty handed. I needed a new phone. We went to Bic and talked asked about a phone. A bunch of people talked and sent over some guy. He was like, yeah... You can get sim free phone and save 10,000 yen. when you sign up. We are like that's not a good deal. I can get cheaper over there. Okay let's go to the bathroom and leave. On the way out we look at one last sign summarizing all the LCC membership plans. Then ビラル comes over asks if we need help. Usually this annoys me, but I told him well, I was thinking of switching carriers today and getting a new phone. It's too bad that guy said it's only 10,000. ビラル spoke English to us. Said no way. The other employee was wrong or lazy or doesn't know what he was talking about. I could save 37,000 yen!!! And the deal was ending in 2 days. If I could get a phone that day I wanted to. My old one was broken. I was tired of Rakuten mobile, it's vert medicore, and was ready to switch now. He explaines all the details. We got some coffee so I could have a moment to make my final decision on which phone and plan I wanted. Came back and got the phone. Basically half price. Got a plan that I really like. Back with UQ mobile, which I like better than Rakuten (I had UQ once before). That's other idiot we talked lost any easy sale, and ビラル saved the day and saved me a ton of money.

Sun Road Shin Shigai Shopping Arcade is a comfortable and wider alternative to the crowded Shimotori Shopping Arcade. It's completely covered, making it perfect for strolling even in rainy weather. Located opposite Kumamoto Sakuramachi Department Store, this arcade forms an easy business district with various stores and restaurants. Although lively, there are many empty stores due to the impact of the coronavirus on the economy.
A walking street with lots of awesome shops and restaurants where you could spend a whole day in. It's not overcrowded, even on Friday night, so that one could walk very leisurely. Teeming with wonderful shops, you could definitely find some that interested you. Highly recommended.

Visited end Jun 2025. Mostly restaurants with grilled food. Couple of medical and cosmetic duty free shop. Two Macdonalds along the arcade. Two Starbucks and convenience stores. Not many Clothing shops. One electronic shop that displays mostly phone and accessories related. One animate shop which really offered quite a lot of animate stuffs. One big bookstore and a 100 jpy store on same building as the bookstore. Depending what you are looking for, it may take hours or minutes. I love the pastry from a store. The outer layer is so thin and crispy. My favorite snack. I didn’t like to walk on this arcade in the evening bcos I can smell oil in the arcade. Guess too many restaurants with grilled and fried stuffs and ventilation wasn’t that good. It gets better towards the other sections where fewer restaurants are available. By the way, most shops close at about 8 pm.

(Translated by Google) I learned for the first time that Snow Peak had a cafe. It has a stylish atmosphere and is perfect for people who love mountains. It may be surprisingly unknown on the 3rd floor of Amu Plaza. I was able to spend a relaxing time. I had the set with a salad, and it was quite filling and delicious. I liked the atmosphere, including the driftwood. The store was spacious and I was able to browse camping supplies while eating. When I asked the staff, I heard that there are only two Snow Peak cafes in Kyushu, one in Kumamoto and one in Miyazaki. Apparently it doesn't exist in Fukuoka yet. It's not mentioned on the flyer, but if you make a reservation online, there's a small note that says lunch is for indoor use only. When I went there, it was indoors. Since it's indoors, it's more like Teppanyaki than BBQ. I requested the premium course for 3300 yen. Personally, the portion is small and the rice is small, so honestly it's not worth the price. Maybe the name value of Snow Peak has been added. The clerk is also indifferent and has no charm at all. Moreover, additional tickets are required. Purchase a ticket for 3000 yen and then order based on the number of tickets = price. In that case, it would be better to eat something separately at the store. There are no recommended points at noon. I won't repeat it either. It might be good for Snow Peak fans who want to feel the atmosphere.

Honestly, I wish there was one more way to blend the honey and soft serve ice cream. If you find that mixing the mixture completely will result in a muddled taste, you can also create an emulsion. In terms of cost performance, it can't be helped because Manuka honey is expensive, but it may become cheaper if a new manufacturing method is used. At the moment, it is difficult to give a high rating because it is expensive. (Translated by Google) Dekopon soda float! Dekopon soda topped with dekopon soft serve ice cream, sauce, and dried fruit - I was totally satisfied! It was my first time trying dekopon soft serve ice cream. It was hot, so the refreshing taste of the dekopon was really nice.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by for lunch on a bus tour. I imagine it must be difficult to prepare lunch for 30 people, but the paella was served on a plate and kept cold. The soup was cold and I didn't think it was delicious. Even while I was still eating, I kept cleaning up the plates, so I couldn't enjoy the meal at my leisure. I didn't see any other groups of customers during the cold February season, but it was a very unpleasant restaurant. To 1800 yen. Prices for everything are going up.

(Translated by Google) It was soooo delicious! It wasn't a typical flavor, but I could feel the direct Dekopon flavor. The dried fruit that comes with it has a nice bittersweet taste. The balance with the sweet soft serve ice cream◎If the temperature wasn't so low that day, I would have ordered a second helping.

(Translated by Google) A mix of Dekopon and chocolate! I really liked the richness of the chocolate and the refreshing feel of the Dekopon. The orange chips have just the right amount of bitterness ◎ I ordered a kids size, but it was a little cold so it was perfect! lol (Original)

(Translated by Google) It was delicious😍 It was so hot that I got burned 👅, but it was rich and delicious, and the Dekopon tasted great 😊 I liked it so much that I thought I would copy it and drink it at home too 😋 Since it was cold, I could only have hot food, but the cold menu items such as soft serve ice cream also looked delicious ✨ I would love to have it when it gets warmer ✨🥺 (Original)
