Specialty Museums
The Towel Museum, located in Ehime's Imabari City, is the world's first museum dedicated to the art of towel manufacturing. Visitors can explore intricate traditional towels, artistic creations made from towels, and an exhibition showcasing the towel-making process. The museum also features a beautiful garden area that changes with the seasons. Additionally, guests can enjoy meals and afternoon teas at the museum cafe and browse original goods and local products at the museum shops.
At first, I thought, “How fun can a towel museum actually be?” But this museum really surprised us! It was much bigger than I expected and there was so much to see. The shop alone is huge, filled with lots of fun items mostly towel-related products, but also plenty of plushies and character goods. Overall, the museum was far more enjoyable and interesting than I imagined. We had a great time!
Marthe — Google review
I visited the museum for museum shop. However, the museum shop sells only kiddy goods, which I didn’t like, so I went up the second floor and purchased local souvenirs and sweets. Parking is available for free in front of the museum.
Sandy J — Google review
Came here specifically to buy towels. They have a wide variety of cute licensed towels, and even plush toys. The museum itself is beautifully designed, with a high-quality and refined atmosphere. If you take a closer look, you might even find that some well-known brand towels are actually supplied by them!
Trina S — Google review
Entrance fee of JPY 1000 (cash only). Surprisingly there are quite a few interesting exhibits. When we were there was a Moomin exhibit and tapestry works on display. Do take note not all the towels sold are made in Japan so please check if you are only looking to buy Imabari towels.
AH Y — Google review
Enjoyed my time here. The museum itself is very interesting 🤔 however getting there and back to imabari is tricky or easy and expensive 🫰🏻 There is no bus that goes near it so you either have to drive or bike. I took taxi and that was very expressive.
Ashley P — Google review
This museum is dedicated to the unique towel culture of imabari and offers visitors the chance to tour and learn about their manufacturing process, as well as many informational exhibits. Take a break in their restaurant or cafe, or take a stroll in their spacious European style garden
Jonathan L — Google review
Towel museum ?? I couldn’t believe there could be this kind of museum. Who could think of a towel can be a thing to be exhibited? Well ~ if you don’t come and visit here you’ll never know what it’s like. The scale of this museum is really huge and there’s a pretty garden outside of the museum. You get an admission ticket with a small piece of towel. This Imabari towel is well known for high-priced, high quality of towel in Japan. I was really surprised to see all those towel art works. So lovely and so amazing piece of art works are definitely attractive enough to every viewers. There are many collaboration products done with cartoon characters as well. It makes you open your wallet. You might end up spending a lot of money to buy cute and beautiful stuffs in the shop after walking around the magnificent exhibition. Great exhibition ~ The best towel products~ People of all ages including kids and adults would have a wonderful happy time here. One to be desired is that there is no public transportation to get here. The best way is to come here by a rented car. That’s why I couldn’t see many foreign tourists but the natives who come in a tour package.
June L — Google review
Look carefully if you want to buy Imabari towel here. Most of the towels are made in china and they are not towels made with Imabari's subtle and unique technology. They are very ordinary towels that you can buy at malls in your country. If you want Imabari towels, choose the ones that with certification mark.

Bicycle rental service
Store
Sunrise Itoyama is a rental bicycle service located in the Imabari Central Cycling Terminal. It offers a variety of bikes and helmets for rent, including electric city bikes and electric sporty bikes (E-bikes). The E-bikes are available for rent at Sunrise Itoyama and Onomichi Port, with return options at specific locations.
What a lovely place!!! The view from the lobby is out of this world. Especially at night. The place has a slightly 70s/80s feel to it, and some of their facilities are a bit dated, but it makes it even more authentic and lovable. The staff, while their English is very poor, are super-lovely, and go out of their way to help you. The bike rental place is right next door, so you don't have to walk much to get ready for your island hopping trip. The restaurant has mostly Western food, which is actually quite decent, it was the first time in three weeks that I had Western food. (The breakfast was Japanese food. VERY GOOD.) Would love to return one day and bike more.
Tamas T — Google review
The place where you get your "trophy" (pay for it) for completing the Shimanami Kaido - if you travel from Onomichi. If you start from Imabari then you get yours here too before tackling your first bridge cause there is a lack of variety of Shimanami Kaido goods in Onomichi side (you get some at U2 but not as much as here). Other wise the view is great for the right side of the Kurushima Bridge. For its left profile, please climb a little bit more (past the short tunnel) to go to the Kurushima Strait Observatory.
Patrick T — Google review
Nice place with a great view, but the bicycle rental system was hectic and crowded even though it was a work day. Their cross bikes are very good, but they recommended an electric mini-bike to my wife, which was not well-suited for the Shimanami Kaido bike ride. If you rent bikes there, make sure to book the bikes before and find out yourselves which bike is the right one for you. Don’t trust them to find you the bike that you need.
Andreas V — Google review
Great place with a view of the bridge from the room. "Western style room" 201 was a little weird, though. It resembled a hospital room, with electric adjustable beds, oversize entry door and emergency call buttons next to each bed. If I go back, I'll ask for a Japanese-style room. The food in the restaurant is very good and reasonably priced. Te restaurant seemed to be a destination for people not staying in the hotel, as well. We had our own bikes, so I can't comment on the rentals, but they seemed to have a huge fleet of bicycles.
Kevin C — Google review
Great service! We stayed in here for one night. The room faces with the bridge. It’s fascinating! The bathroom also impressed me. The best place to start your bicycle voyage from here!

Absolutely gorgeous! One of the best places we have stayed, and best value. The view of the bridges is amazing from your room. Very clean, very comfortable. Great onsen. Great location.

Rented bicycles here to cycle to Onomichi in one day. There was no wait since it was Monday morning and even without a reservation we got our bicycles for the day quickly, which were in good enough condition to ride the 70kms. However, I would recommend bringing some kind of seat cushion to make the ride more enjoyable. Everyone was very friendly, the man who handed over the bicycles and instructed us on them even gave me a rubberband for my pant leg as it was quite wide and could get stuck in the gears, very considerate! My Japanese is still intermediate, but all the important information is also written down in English on the slip they give you, so if you're unsure about your comprehension abilities you don't have to worry. We also used the one-day luggage shipping to Onomichi for 2200 yen a piece. You can drop off luggage between 8 to 10 am and pick it up at a hotel in Onomichi between 6 to 7 pm, even if you do not stay there! We started the ride at 9:30 am and returned the bicycles in Onomichi at approximately 4:15pm, so it's definietly doable in one day even if you're not a frequent cyclist.

Great cycling rental base. Great bikes and wonderful service, in short Wonderful people. I think this is the best place to start your journey on the Shimanami Kaido. Going to Onomichi and back ❤️ It’s got a food court, access to water and picnic areas with tables. It’s got a shopping plaza and a very large parking lot on both sides of the road And as usual in Japan… it’s got the finest roadside stations lavatory facilities. All the roadside stations in Japan are absolutely amazing and super clean !!! This is unique in the world 🗺️! Arigato Japan 🇯🇵 for Road Trippers!!!!

We made a stop during the Shimanami Kaido cycling trail. It was the perfect spot for lunch ! The fried chicken menu was one of the best i had so far in Japan. And the view is really nice 📸
MD J — Google review
It was OK. I went in as I was hungry and thought i would eat as had lovely bay views. I elected not to eat the food looked pretty average. A couple of shops. One selling fresh oranges. I think targeting the cycle riders of which there were many. The other the normal tourism shop of pre-packaged everything. I bought a juice and carried on. No real photos. There is a bell that they liked ringing.
Redfern R — Google review
Stopped here while exploring the island. Lots of vending machines and a great orange store. Nice place to pick up some unique things or gifts too. I lost a pair of sunglasses while there which it turns out I left at the bike rental place while getting a stamp, went back the next day to check and owe a big thank you to the lovely lady in there who found them! Lovely place with an amazing view and lovely people too. Would recommend!

The final stop, half way through the 7 bridge highway, on the way from Kotahara to Hiroshima, a great scenic spot! Have lunch here, enjoy the view and get closest to the water front! It’s a great break when driving a 300km scenic route, pretty much a whole day affair if one takes the time to admire the scenery along the way! So yes, highly recommended to do a stopover, and from here it’s pretty much 125km to Hiroshima! Enjoy as much as we did on this perfect drivers day!

The Murakami KAIZOKU Museum is a fascinating destination dedicated to the seafaring clan that once ruled the Inland Sea area, collecting tolls from shippers for safe passage through local waters. While English descriptions are limited in the main exhibition, visitors can access a multilingual audio guide via smartphone. The museum offers insights into the ancient Kimura Navy/Pirate family and their role in guiding ships through treacherous waters.
Murakami Kaizoku was not a pirate of this island clan. They were not only pilots of this rapids, but also ship guards, traders, fishermen, and poets.
AMC T — Google review
Fascinating historical museum with archaeological highlights from the nearby islands. A great snapshot of a period in history that shaped modern Japan
Matthew P — Google review
Something very different from standard historical museums. This incorporates recent archaeological studies with centuries-old weapons and garments, married together with educational diagrams and models. To top it off there are videos to fill the historical details. Great Jiba cafe and gift shop as well.
Matthew P — Google review
Local museum about the ancient Kimura Navy//Pirate family. You can learn the stories about them. It's a pity that the VR experiencing(extra fee) and trial of worrier suit (Kabuto) are suspended due to Covid-19.
人生如戲 — Google review
The recent addition of a multilingual audio guide that can be accessed by smartphone makes this museum dedicated to the seafaring clan that dominated the Inland sea in this area (and extracted toll for safe passage through treacherous local waters) makes a visit to this museum very worthwhile.
Paul W — Google review
Interesting museum about the clan which controlled this island area and taxed shippers in return for guiding them safely through the treacherous waters. Some displays with English. Great views and nice shop and snack bar.
Janet C — Google review
Great venue for learning about the inland sea history.
Richard H — Google review
Interesting museum. There aren't that many English descriptions and you can't use Google translate in the main exhibition, since you aren't allowed to take photos, but there is an English audio guide, so if possible bring ear phones to use it.

The 2nd Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge is part of a series of three connected suspension bridges that span the Kurushima Strait, measuring over 4km long. It's considered one of the best viewpoints along the Shimanami Kaido Expressway, offering sweeping vistas of the bridge itself, the rapid tides of Kurushima Strait, and the city of Imabari.
Crossing this bridge on foot or on bike will give you a breathtaking view of Japan's rural beauty where the land meets the sea.
Leon C — Google review
Beautiful, worth to rent a bike and ride even if not too much
Alina B — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking set of bridges that makes up the southwestern beginning of the shimanami Kaido. You can walk, bike, or drive across. The views across the entire span are spectacular and you can see several of the islands within the channel connecting honshu to shikoku. Be warned, there aren't many spots for shade. Bring lots of water.

Situated at the southern tip of Oshima, Kirosan Observatory Park offers breathtaking panoramic views of forested islands, city lights, and the Kurushima Kaikyo bridge. Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the observatory features unique pathways and slopes that lead visitors to different levels and perspectives. It is an ideal spot to admire the Shimanami Kaido toll road connecting Honshu to Shikoku, passing over six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea.
If you're going through the islands, it is worth the stop here at the observatory. The view is amazing and not a long drive up. People do bike and walk up, I do not recommend unless you are advanced. There is a cute shop at the top and the observatory stairs and lookout has great architecture. Highly recommend to get a good view!
Jonathan K — Google review
Get one of the best views high atop the observatory park. A warning, there is almost 4 km of uphill. Even with a battery assisted bicycle, it took some time and effort to get up. It also drained a lot of battery to do so. But if you're already here, what's a little more? I would skip if you don't have a battery assisted bicycle as the climb is pretty relentless unless you're pretty athletic.
Charles C — Google review
Low 60s, partly cloudy, and e-assist bicycle made this side trip destination worth the time & effort. Just a handful of cars and people at 9:30. Lots more going up on the decent so earlier is better I suspect. Enjoy!
Kendall H — Google review
Nice drive from Matsuyama and toll was about JPY1800 . The bridge is beautiful. Easy drive uphill to observatory, just drive slow at turning corners. Great view at the top. We had a cloudy day unfortunately but it was still nice. There was enough parking (free). Worth going.
AH Y — Google review
Great view of the bridges at the top, parking is free, toilet is okay, and there is a little dessert shop up there. Worth the drive up there.
Worawat L — Google review
I'm far from a seasoned cyclist, but was able to cycle up the entire mountain, stopping every so often to take photos. The cycle wasn't as scary as I feared, even with the lead road to the path being mostly uphill as well. The view is...one of the best views I've ever seen. Not only are the Kurushima-Kaikyo bridges spell-binding, there's a 360 degree view over the sea and a stunning panorama of Imabari. If you're cycling and it's a clear day, don't miss it! And don't forget to check your brakes when making your way back downhill!
Unexpected A — Google review
Located on the southern end of Oshima, it is the best place to get a view of the Shimanami Kaido. Drop atop the overlook bridge, designed by famed architect Kuma kengo, on a clear day you can see the highest mountain in western Japan, mount ishizuchi san. You'll also get a clear view of the kurushima kaikyo channel below

Tatara Bridge is a modern cable-stayed bridge that offers sweeping views of the Seto Inland Sea. It resembles two swans spreading their wings and is located at the border between Hiroshima and Ehime Prefectures. The area around the bridge is designed for visitors to enjoy the view comfortably, with benches strategically placed to provide unobstructed views. Cyclists also flock to this spot, as it features a Cyclist Sanctuary monument that has become a popular pilgrimage site for cyclists.
The third bridge when cycling the shimanami kaido from onomichi. Do look out for the two wooden claps that when claps together would make an echo throughout the bridge, that's one of the main attractions of this bridge.

Yoshiumi Rose Park is a charming local park featuring vibrant Japanese and international roses, making it a delightful stop for flower enthusiasts. The well-maintained garden offers seating, clean facilities, and wheelchair-friendly paths. While the annual rose festival in May showcases the blooms at their best, visitors can still appreciate the extensive variety of roses throughout the year. Additionally, a plant store offers souvenirs such as rose ice cream during blooming seasons.
Nice Rose Park along the Island Explorer path. There is also a sign alone the main bike Route. The Roses are currently in bloom and the Park is well maintained. There is also a food stand here to rest.

Lovely local rose park with Japanese and international roses. There is seating and clean toilets. The local sandy soil is perfect for roses. As I visited in January, I was not expecting as many bushes to be in flower. This is a well set out and maintained garden. I was most pleased to stumble across this delightful garden and park.

Very recommend park. I recommend you to come during end of May as the flowers are blooming beautifully at this time. Free entrance some more😍 It is very convenient to for elderly who are using wheelchair also as the road is wheelchair friendly too.

Beautiful park with hundreds, thousands? of roses. Nice stop during the cycling. Went there mid-May and it was perfect!
Gazelle — Google review
Along the Oshima "Island Explorer" offshoot of the Shimanami Kaido main "Blue Line" cycle route. The roses (apparently 400 kinds from all around the world) are pretty when they are in the season but the facility has seen better days and is a little depressing out of season. A good selection of ice cream flavours are available at the very retro souvenir shop and cafe. Kids play area witha various things to climb on also attached.
Paul W — Google review
One of the most beautiful Rose Gardens I have ever visited. The rose plants are impressive.. from red to pink to yellow and white and others have mixed colors. You can identify its specie as there is a tag beside it. There is a big crown of roses at the entrance. The fountain is one you cannot miss... there is a playground on the other side of the major part of the rose garden where programs can be held. You can access the rose plant store by passing through the wooden bridge. The facility is complete with toilets, souvenir stores, a museum of old artifacts and plenty of hut shades and benches where you can relax. Highly recommended for families.
JunTrep C — Google review
Such a beautiful and fun place. Accessible with a cycle. Good services available. Many different types of roses available. Can be a good place for a small family picnic.

Itoyama Observatory offers a stunning panoramic view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the first triple suspension bridge, and the Kurushima Strait, known for its rapid tides. It is renowned for providing an excellent vantage point to witness breathtaking sunsets over the ocean. The observatory is also popular among cyclists and offers unobstructed views of the expansive blue ocean and the impressive bridge.
Such a nice view here. There is a rooftop platform that one should not miss.

Nice view to see the bridge and sea from top. Worth a stop won’t make sense to make a trip though
Nan H — Google review
Such a fantastic place to get a great view of Kurushima strait and Kurushima-kaikyo bridge. It’s well known to be the best place to be able to see a wonderful sunset that it’s also on the main cover page for a information brochure of Japan. When we got there it was a daytime so we couldn’t see the beautiful sunset scene. However it was still beautiful to see the blue ocean and a huge bridge. This is also called a holy-land for bicycle riders. If you come and see this view you’ll know why.
June L — Google review
This is the observation deck with the best view for shimanami kaido on Shikoku island! I went to the 3 other observatories nearby - kurushima strait observatory, Sunrise Itoyama, and kurushima service area (interchange), and here (Itoyama Observatory) is the one with the best view. To find this place, go to the parking lot and find the stairs leading up to here. The said parking lot is pretty much in the same area as the Kurushima Strait Observatory. But instead of turning right after the tunnel, you turn left and go up to the parking lot. As for the other observatories, here are my notes: The interchange is more complete with different food options, rest area, a foodcourt and souvenir shops. The Kurushima Strait Observatory is just 1 small shop with a mini museum. Sunrise Itoyama has a restaurant and some shops and a nice rest lounge, and one could walk down to the beach from there.

Kawaranofurusato Park is a delightful destination that beautifully showcases the rich heritage of Kikuma kawara, high-quality roof tiles crafted in Imabari for over 750 years. This park is not just about history; it’s a vibrant floral haven, especially during rose season when more than 500 stunning roses bloom, creating a visual feast for visitors. Even on quieter days, the park buzzes with life as people gather to enjoy the scenery and purchase rose plants to take home.
(Translated by Google) "Kikuma Kawara" is an onigawara tile that has a history of over 750 years and a traditional secret technique, and is a traditional specialty of Ehime Prefecture. Tile roofs, which are indispensable for Japanese houses, are resistant to temperature changes, keep the interior at an appropriate temperature regardless of the climate, and are environmentally friendly. Kikuma tiles have a unique beauty, are durable, waterproof, and comfortable, and are a specialty product that comes in a wide variety and allows for free expression. At Kawarakan, the hometown park of tiles, you can enjoy the beauty of Kikuma tiles and the flowers and plants that grow naturally in warm Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture at the same time.I think it's a ``tile and nature theme park.''Morning 9am to 5pm When the museum opens, you can view it for an admission fee of 210 yen for adults and 100 yen for children (group discount available) (closed every Monday). In addition to exhibits that convey the prosperity and glory of Kikuma tiles, there are also various exhibits created by master craftsmen who are currently active. Many arts and crafts are also on display and for sale. Even if you don't have time to enter the museum, I think you can get a glimpse of the wonders of Kikuma tiles by viewing the building itself and the free exhibits on the first floor, so if you're in the area, you should definitely check it out. "Wow, it's so pretty! It's like velvet," the voices of the aunts echoed throughout the place. I assumed it would be large because it was called Rose Park, but it was actually a small rose garden. However, there were many varieties, and I was amazed and fascinated by the size of the flowers and the unique colors. The rose leaves were really shiny and glossy, and I was happy to see that they are being carefully cared for. I was short on time this time, so I only saw the roses, but when I looked at the guide map, there were other flowers I wanted to see. Great place to visit during plum blossom season. You can get a nice sea glass bell at the Shinto shrine as well.

Nice park with a number of things to see and several great photo opportunities. Parking and entry is free, though you may find a queue for parking if you go during blossom season and don’t arrive right when the park opens. There’s a large playground built into the hill near the amphitheater which is great for kids. From the highest point in the park you will have a great view of the sea and the well-manicured plumb trees. You’ll find turtles and koi in the pond.

Park
Setonaikai National Park is Japan's first and largest national park, established in 1934 and covering about 3,000 islands. It offers a range of experiences and destinations such as the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage route. One highly recommended activity is biking from Onomichi to Imabari, which offers moderate difficulty with mostly gradual uphill sections and stunning views along the way. The park features hidden beaches, warm locals, and beautiful rest stops with picturesque sunset views.
I am truly in love with Japanese culture. I come here to heal in the most natural ways! The Non city vibes take you back in time. A must experience while in Hiroshima, Japan!

Beautiful park, worth a day trip at least. Take the cable car, and home up to the Observatory. Lots to eat and drink, but be warned, most shops and kiosks close early (autumn 2024).
Steve K — Google review
I highly recommend the bike from Onomichi to Imabari. It was definitely the highlight of the trip! For those that are concerned about the difficulty, it is surprisingly moderate (but definitely not easy). It sounds much more difficult than it actually is. Most of the uphill was not bad at all for 95% of the ride. It's mostly gradual uphill and a lot of downhill, with the exception of one part towards the end of the journey, which was admittedly very brutal. As far as navigation goes, it is all very straightforward. When you rent your bike, the rental place will provide you with a map of the islands but it isn't even necessary. This national park is known for biking, so there is a blue line on the ground that will guide you from start to finish on your entire journey (see images). You would have to try to get lost. I didn't even need to use Google Maps. You will likely need to stay overnight at one of the hotels or hostels midway through if you plan on doing the full ride. For those who don't want to spend more than a day bike riding, renting for one day is also fine and let's you see quite a bit (this is what I did the first time bike riding here!). Doing it in one day is possible, although I'm not sure I would recommend it. There are convenience stores, but we didn't really find too many restaurants that were open on the island. So be prepared to just stick to convenience store food for some meals. Check out the photos. Hopefully, they will convince you that visiting here is worth your time!

Yamaguchi Flower Land is a delightful destination for nature lovers, offering beautiful flowers in every season. The garden features vibrant fall foliage and provides a serene setting for leisurely walks. Visitors can enjoy the various gardens at their own pace and even find playgrounds for kids to have fun while adults appreciate the natural beauty. With its picturesque surroundings, this place is perfect for picnics and offers a great all-around experience.
Love it here!!!! For two adults it was a little over $10 make sure you bring yen because they are yen only. We were able to stroll through all the different gardens at our own pace and even stopped at the little shop on our way out. A great place for an afternoon stroll. The perfect spot for a picnic and just a great all around experience! Will definitely be visiting multiple times throughout the year!

Simply awesome that they have flowers during all seasons. Parking is plentiful, its roughly 510 yen/adult and preschool aged kids are free. If you or your lady enjoy taking walks in a garden, this is worth the trip. The trees had beautiful bright fall leaves to enjoy a nice little stroll. If you have kids, there’s some slides and playground for them to enjoy while the adults actually want to enjoy the garden (there’s a pretty big slide)!

Hoshinoura Seaside Park is a spacious coastal area with a wooden platform and a designated space for washing, offering an ideal location for swimming. This serene environment provides relaxation through the soothing sounds of lapping waves and the refreshing sea breeze.

Pleasant seaside park and beach area, with toilets and (in season) shower facilities. I actually had to camp here (when I mistimed my cycle between Matsuyama and Imabari) with a Japanese cyclist, but not an official camp site.
