Senkoji Park is a sprawling public park situated atop a hill, named after the Senkoji temple nestled within. Visitors can access the park on foot via various paths or take a cable car offering stunning views. The 1km walking path from Senkoji Ropeway Station to Senkoji Temple features 25 natural rocks inscribed with passages from renowned literary works associated with Onomichi.
A great place to relax and enjoy the peaceful ocean below! There are even popular video game characters here, so be sure to look for them、

千光寺 (Senko-ji Temple) is a beautiful temple in Onomichi, Japan, known for its stunning views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. It's famous for its red Akado hall and the unique rock formations around the temple grounds. Many people find it a peaceful and spiritual place to visit.
Pauline L — Google review
If you’re ever in Onomichi, definitely check out Senkoji Park. It’s up on a hill, and you can either take a quick cable car or walk up. The views of the sea and town are awesome—especially at sunset. In spring, it’s packed with cherry blossoms, and there’s this cool “Path of Literature” with quotes from famous writers. There’s also a sleek art museum up there designed by Tadao Ando. Super chill spot to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the vibe.
Marcin M — Google review
My heart will forever live on here. It's one of the best places to see cherry blossoms during the season. It's hilly, hot, and exposed so make sure to bring water and good walking shoes for your quad workout. And bring cash for the ice cream at the top here. There's also a museum. It's truly so beautiful at this park.
K H — Google review
The design of the observation deck was quite a sight. The view is picturesque during sunset. A couple of ice cream store nearby; one near the observation deck and the other near the museum. The park is spacious and you could spend many hours here. The ropeway takes up 3-4 mins at most. Walking takes 25-40mins depending on the pace and entry points.
Trinh H — Google review
Great views of onimichi below. Plenty of picturesque streets and the museum of art was designed by Ando with a huge art library.
Owen — Google review
Enjoy a gorgeous panorama of the townscape and Onomichi Channel from high atop the city; chosen as one of the 100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots and as a Lover's Sanctuary. Inside the park, you'll find the Path of Literature that contains poems by Onomichi writers and poets engraved into stones, as well as museums, shops, and more.
Jonathan L — Google review
A wonderful little park that is on the top of the hill with a gorgeous view, and when you walk down the hill, you get to see a number of wonderful temples, museums, and really cute cafés. There’s a walk that is famous for its cats, and also a walk that is famous for its poetry. This place in general has a lot to offer, and I would highly recommend that you only get the rope way up, and then walk down.

Buddhist temple
Senkoji Temple is a renowned 9th-century Buddhist temple situated in a picturesque park, offering stunning views of the city and sea. It is one of the most famous temples along the Temple Walk, which also includes Saikokuji and Jodoji. The walk takes visitors through narrow alleys showcasing daily life in Onomichi. At Senkoji Temple, dating couples are drawn to its heart-shaped ema (votive plaques).
I don't really know much about the temple, but it is one of the recommended place to visit in Onomichi. I'll definitely read up on this place at a later time! I was descending the from the observatory via the Bungaku no Michi and I came across this place. This temple has a beautiful view and a bell. I don't know the significance of the bell but I saw some locals ringing it. Visited at 28 Mar 2025
De O — Google review
The climb up to the temple took some time as the way up consisted of steep, uneven steps and inclined walkways. Alternatively, you can take the tramp up to the park then walk to the temple. Great views from the temple.

Nice place for temple and watching the hilly port scene in 尾道市. The sound of rings is relaxing and there is a good spot for watching the peak tram. You may take the tram up and walk down the scope in 25 mins.
Michael H — Google review
On the way from Setoda to Hiroshima, we stopped by here. If we had more time, I would have liked to visit the shopping street and the hot springs in the evening, but this time I focused on Senkoji, the place I most wanted to see. The area around the temple has a lovely atmosphere and offers the kind of scenery that’s typical of Onomichi. The view from the temple grounds was absolutely stunning. The descent from the three-story pagoda was shorter than I expected.
Emma S — Google review
I came here on Monday in mid of April. It was beautiful with full of cherry blossom! Lots of people but still have some place to sit and relax. I really like it, recommend to bring some food and mat for a lovely picnic 讚!很喜歡

Worthy of climbing up, but summertime is not so recommended.

A short hiking and the view from the cable car and the temple was great Good for a half-day trip here
Arthur C — Google review
The best view in a lovely place. One of the highlight of Onomichi (with the bike ride toward shikoku and the food 😁) Great view for everyone (i walked up the stairs but there is a cable car). The gardens (in small terraces) along the way are very relaxing and romantic. The temple is nice too but the view is everything. I went there during hanami, it’s even better but even outside outside of hanami i should be good.

Museum
The Onomichi Motion Picture Museum, housed in a renovated Meiji-era warehouse, offers a nostalgic journey through the history of cinema. Visitors can capture memories in front of the iconic cinema projector at the entrance and explore old posters and historical materials related to films shot in Onomichi. The museum also features an extensive collection of ornamental beckoning cats from the Meiji era, adding to its quirky charm.
As long as you are the fan of the movie "Tokyo Story", it is the museum that you should never miss visiting, even though it is tiny. Onomichi has a vibe so charming that you feel like you are in a Shōwa movie when visiting.
HM C — Google review
If you are even a slightly familiar with old Japanese movies and have seen those filmed in Onomichi, then you will find this place really exciting. I am myself not aware of more than a couple of Japanese classics shot in Onomichi but just looking at the old movie posters is really entertaining for me.
Shalaka M — Google review
Nothing stated in English. But really cute. Lots of cool posters. Really should explain more about what is displayed in English because it looks really interesting.
Sjoerd L — Google review
This museum is a wonderful spring of history and essence of Onomichi’s great cinema foray into the world.

You can find all of the movies that filmed in Onomichi here. Very interesting.

(Translated by Google) I went there around 4pm on a weekday in May. When I tried to park my bicycle in front of the facility, I was warned not to park it there, but to park it in the city hall bicycle parking lot across the street. If you go there, please be careful. In terms of content, the exhibition mainly features films by director Ozu Yasujiro. Other posters and equipment from the heyday of film in the Showa era are also on display. In the video corner, there was a film playing that seemed to be a story about old Onomichi and modern Onomichi. I started watching it halfway through, so I was wondering. There was no footage of director Obayashi's Onomichi series, which was disappointing.

(Translated by Google) It's in an easy-to-find location, and there is a nearby parking lot. There is a JAF discount. Photography is prohibited inside the building. The museum is a warehouse from the Meiji period. Posters from the 1960s and other times are on display. There is a comprehensive corner explaining the works of director Kaneto Shindo. Reading the explanations will make you want to see the films. There are displays of cameras and projectors, and you can read old film pamphlets. There is also a mini-theater. It was very quiet, so I was able to look around calmly. It's not that large.

Museums
Onomichi City Museum of Art is a modern gallery featuring Japanese and global art, housed in a sleek glass-fronted building with a design by architect Tadao Ando. Originally opened in 1980, the museum underwent reconstruction and was unveiled in 2003. Visitors can enjoy temporary exhibitions, city views from the large windows overlooking Seto Inland Sea, and a cafe on-site.
11/2024 Friday around noon. No queue. Fully enjoyed the Wasaku Kobayashi limited time exhibition in the beautiful museum.

Sorry a display of photos from Disney archives is not art. I expected a bit more from a museum of art. Wouldn't have gone up that hill you're on if I had knew this was the art on display. Only 1 star is for the view which is lovely but 0 for the art. Also you can't take photos of it? Your whole display is a photocopy of an archive. Shame I wasted 800 yen for this nonsens.
Elad F — Google review
Nice view over the city. Specially in the morning, when there is mist over the hills. The art museum has a great collection of jewellery. Also note the laces under the jewels.
Pasi M — Google review
The sea I can see,I did see. I felt nostalgic as getting this scenery after 20 years. At that time this art museum had not been built. Not so many famous artist creations are exhibited. But this museum give us great experiences artists had been trying to express. Impressive,Fauvism,Cubisme,Japanease painting,Sculpture, Whichever selected the soul is bried. Surprisingly no permanent exhibition. I can sea some answers how local museum will exist.

Janet H — Google review
I decided to visit and took the train from Hiroshima hoping to spend a nice day in Onomichi. This is the 3rd time I have tried to visit the museum. Once again it was closed. The English website is confusing about opening times, perhaps a visual calendar with colour coding showing the days that they are closed would be helpful. Onomichi is as always a charming and friendly town, but no more tries for the Art Museum, too disappointing

Senkoji Park Observatory offers stunning 360-degree views of the islands in the inland sea and Onomichi city. It's a free venue, accessible by a 20-30 minute walk from the bottom of the hill or via a ropeway ride. Visitors recommend using the ropeway to go up and walking down if physically able, otherwise roundtrip ropeway is an option.
Great views. There is a brand new observatory. Very comfortable and accessible. There is no fee to access. Next, there is a toilet and gift shop that sells soft ice creams.
Alejandro G — Google review
I visited Senkoji Park Observatory during my trip to Onomichi. Instead of taking the cable car, I decided to hike up by foot. It was a bit grueling, especially with some steep parts, but if you take your time and enjoy the walk, it’s totally worth it. The trail is quiet, scenic, and lets you experience the charm of the town from a different angle. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of Onomichi and the Seto Inland Sea. The peaceful atmosphere at the observatory makes the climb even more satisfying. Highly recommended if you’re up for a little challenge with a great reward at the end.
G A — Google review
We took our time meandering up to the Senkoji Peak Observatory and paid 100yen to climb the boulder (with the unsafe chain design) which was a bit of fun. The temple is interesting and if you make your way right through there is an audio device providing information and history of the temple in several languages. The hike to the observation deck is well worth it, the views are grand. Who ever designed the stairs at the actual observation deck, is amazing, these are climbed with such ease. A great way to explore Onomichi and take in the beauty of this inland sea.
Helen R — Google review
Great scenery of Seto Inland Sea. You can access the observatory easily through cable car. If you want to hike, you can walk up the stairs via the path of literature and cat alley or from the back via the art museum. Just have water ready and prepare to sweat especially during summer time.
Barbie L — Google review
Worth a visit where we can see a bird's eyeview of Onomichi

The ojii san there greeted us in our language! He was so friendly and even offered us to take picture! Thankyou very much! The view is nice from up here!

Astonishing view. I recommend go before 9am or after 5pm, basically when the cable car is not operating so less crowd.
Yinshen T — Google review
New venue, and it's for free!!! Amazing!!! 20-30 mins walk from the bottom of the hill. Recommended to use the ropeway to up and walk down the hill if you have good feet. Otherwise, use the ropeway roundtrip.

This historic shopping arcade is renowned for its unique blend of shops selling items such as clothing, Japanese kitchen knives, and pottery.

This is very impressive place where you can enjoy your leisure time to relax yourself or see the gorgeous landscape along the way ! Of course, as soon as you reach the top of the hill, you will see the wonderful view and the great visions of the city! People say that it is the best place to overlook the amazing sights ! If you are so lucky, you’ll see the cats on the catwalk (貓之細道)! They’re so lovely and adorable, you’ll feel comfortable and cozy with the cats companions on the way! It’s an awesome and unforgettable experience! Plus, it’s worth visiting the unique tourist attraction!

The covered shopping street runs for about 1 km and during our 2 day stay was generally uncrowded and quite pleasant to stroll along. A mixture of traditional older style shops with some casual eateries, clothing and craft shops. Like most things about Onomichi, it is quietly charming

Senkoji Sanso is a modest inn with simple rooms, communal bathhouse, and stunning sea views. Guests can enjoy the old-fashioned charm of the rooms along with modern amenities like WiFi. The dining experience is delightful, with delicious meals served in-room for dinner and in the large hall for breakfast. The inn's unique atmosphere due to its location in Onomichi provides a healing environment, especially on floors with terraces offering amazing views of the Onomichi Channel at night.

I always stayed on a floor with a terrace, and the view of the Onomichi Channel at night was amazing, and I always looked forward to it. It's such a shame that I can't see that. Sanroku Station serves as a convenient gateway for visitors heading to Senkoji Park via the scenic ropeway. This charming station offers helpful services, including guidance for those who may find themselves lost in Onomichi and temporary storage for personal belongings. As you ascend, you'll be treated to stunning views of the five-storied pagoda nestled atop the mountain, alongside a beautiful temple.

The three-storied pagoda is located halfway up the mountain, so we recommend walking up one way and using the ropeway one way, or going up the ropeway one way and walking down one way. There are no stations along the way, so only the bottom and the top of the mountain, so if you buy a round trip, 1) Take the ropeway from below to the top of the mountain 2) If you walk down to the three-storied pagoda, you will have to climb to the top of the mountain again to use the ticket for the return trip lol. It is definitely easier to walk down than to go back to the top of the mountain, so the return ticket will be wasted ☜ Me That's why I feel like it's a little better to buy a round-trip ticket, but in reality it's more than enough to buy a one-way ticket. The Innoshima Flower Center is a pleasant location with an attractive panorama. It offers the perfect setting for group outings, whether with friends or family, to relish the scenic vistas. During our recent visit, we captured images of the vibrant autumn foliage known as momiji. While October provides a delightful experience, it is advisable to plan your trip during summer when the park bursts into full bloom with various blossoms.

Soraiken Garden is a superb place to stay, offering beautifully presented and delicious Japanese-style breakfast. The hotel staff are always very helpful and friendly. While it's a bit far from the station, they provide a shuttle bus service for guests. Additionally, they offer a phone for use during your stay. The garden incorporates the tides of the Onomichi Channel, adding to its amazing features.
I stayed here for one night only. Breakfast was Japanese style, beautifully presented and delicious. I couldn't fault the hotel staff, always very helpful and friendly. If there is a negative it is the distance from the station but they do provide a shuttle bus service to and from the station. They also provide a phone to use for the duration of your stay.
