Nature & Wildlife Areas
Nestled in Thunder Bay, the Cascades Conservation Area is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts. This riverfront forest offers an array of activities, from invigorating hikes to refreshing swims and stunning photography opportunities. With well-maintained trails, including a wheelchair-accessible path, visitors can explore the beauty of nature at their own pace. The highlight here is undoubtedly the breathtaking cascades along the Current River—perfect for cooling off after a hike or simply enjoying the serene surroundings.
Great spot to enjoy nature's beauty. $5 parking fee. I always make a point to go there when I am in Thunder Bay
Kathleen W — Google review
There are three trails. I took the blue (fastest to the falls) down and then wandered up (I think it was the orange trail) Great break from the drive. Seems popular with the local teens as a bunch of them were hanging out at the water
Anjum M — Google review
We LOVED this hike! The way the trail is laid out you can make it nice and long, or you can walk directly to the cascades along the most direct route possible. It was a ton of fun to climb along the rocky riverbed. It was a beautiful day, so there were quite a few groups of people there in swimming suits playing in the water, which looked refreshing! Little kids would need heavy supervision, dogs seemed to be having fun, the casecades portion is probably not easy for people with ankle issues.
Kailey P — Google review
What a great spot this is. The trails are amazing and well groomed. We always love this for either a long hike or short one.
Kenneth P — Google review
Absolutely a jewel so close to the city. A great place to take a quick dip or stay for the day and suntan on the rocks. The trails are excellent and easy for most people to use.
Deva A — Google review
The Cascades Conservation Area has some nice trails that are not too technical but also not too flat. The trails connect to Trowbridge Falls and Centennial Park. The highlight of the area is the Cascade Falls and rapids, a beautiful water feature running between exposed rock on either side of the river. Unfortunately you have to be very careful because there is alot of broken glass on the rocks.
Sammy H — Google review
Great place for a nature trail, riverside is kindy rocky but still very accessible. The river itself is nice and water is swimmable. I just hope they put on better signs at their trail, we got lost and had to go back to get to the trail that we want to take.

Centennial Park is a sprawling riverside oasis that offers an array of activities throughout the year, making it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're in the mood for hiking along scenic trails or enjoying a refreshing swim during the summer months, this park has something for everyone. The walking paths meander alongside the Current River, leading to picturesque views as it flows into Boulevard Lake and eventually Lake Superior.
This is a gorgeous location. The view from the bridge is comparable to a desktop wallpaper. The route down Arundel St is really lovely. I enjoyed every minute of my time there. I will most likely return here shortly.
Swagat — Google review
The trails, river, and peaceful atmosphere are incredible. The kids' playground had littles running around having loads of laughs. The washroom is clean but older, and it was a nice change to see no graffiti. Where things fall short is the Musgkeg train ride which is out of operation again this summer. The Muskeg reminds me of the Little Train That Could and each summer "thinks it can", but with this much excitement the little Muskeg can't contain itself and keeps jumping the rails. I know each year the city tries to wrangle it back in, but by the time they can get to it, the leaves are turning, and the Littles are going back to school. So back it goes until next summer when the cycle starts over again. The other area I was sad about was seeing the farm land where the animals used to roam. It is all grown in with tall grass and weeds, but the bees love it, and they buzzed around the thistles, which is good. I should have turned back at that point, but I know myself well enough that when I saw the little fenced pen and heard quacking, I could not give up a chance to say hello to a feathered friend. I walked to the barn area where I found 3 baby goats, 3 large bunnies, 6 or so ducks, and 10ish chickens. Oh, and some pigeons were eyeing up the barn roof for access. I will just say it may be time for the park to consider exhibits that are not live animals. I do, however, think anyone that heads to Centennial Park for a walk, hike, or even to bring their dog to the off leash trails will be very happy and feel more relaxed when they leave.
Candace C — Google review
I just love taking my dogs walking there! Not only are there Great walking trails, but things to see while you walk! I love all the old machinery and log buildings you can go inside with all the vintage bunks n kitchen etc! Wonderful hill to go sledding on in the winter and animals like ducks, rabbits, etc for the kids or adults to enjoy seeing! Nice big playground for the kids to play in! Just a really family friendly place!
Amy K — Google review
Old machines kids can climb on- horse and buggy type grader, log loader, bulldozer. The train was not running at the time we went but kids could go up and sit in the buggy behind the train. There is a fee for riding the train but I didn’t see the prices. There are log cabins but they were closed when we went. Nice trails with little side trails throughout. We didn’t do the whole walk around but did parts of it. Lots of parking. We went on a Sunday evening and it wasn’t very busy.
Jessica J — Google review
This should get 5 stars just for being so close to my house. How have I been ignoring this place that is pretty much my back yard? I went in the evening when it was cool enough for a big dude to go out on an extended walk. If it is a hot day though, there are a few good spots to get in the water along the walking trail. Excellent place for hiking, biking, tanning or swimming. There was a yoga session going on in the field. In the winter time there is a big hill that is great for family sliding. All kinds of people doing all sorts of activities at Centennial Park.
Mark W — Google review
Beautiful park, large grounds for walking, snowshoeing, biking. River goes through it. Old log cabins and wagons. Road equipment is interesting.
Slwpdx — Google review
There are some really nice trails in Centennial park, thunder Bay! Many scenic views as well! We went as a group and did 2 trails (a short trail and a long one) before heading back home. All the trails were properly marked and it was barely busy which I loved.

The new park is super cute, loved hanging out in the rope hammock. There is train tracks that run along the trails that make the perfect candid photos. Great place for nature walks & lots of wild life.

Located in Thunder Bay, the Kaministiquia River Heritage Park offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Kaministiquia River and its significance in shaping Thunder Bay and Canada. The park features the historic James Whalen Tug, a coal-fired icebreaker tugboat built in 1905. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the river while exploring attractions like the Old Via Train and the Metallic Aboriginal Wing Sculpture.
A great place to visit if you need some time alone and want to have some mindful moments.
Lesley G — Google review
Not the best part of the town to visit due to the presence of a lot of homeless people.. but views are stunning..

Good boardwalk for biking, walking. Nice views of the river. Signs reminding us of the grain and shipping history.
Bob B — Google review
Great place to stop n have a coffee or lunch n watch rowers and boats make their way up and down the river. You can check out the Old Via Train, the James Whalen Ice Breaker/Tug and the amazing Metallic Aboriginal Wing Sculpture. As others have stated, theres often undesirables in the vicinity but whatever. It's still a nice little spot to just clear your mind.

Mills Block Forest offers a 4km hiking trail with benches and a beaver dam, providing opportunities to spot wildlife. The area features singletrack trails, climbs, descents, and a pump track for an enjoyable hike. The forest is home to pine, spruce, balsam, birch, and poplar trees as well as two ponds. Families can participate in the Big Boreal Adventure scavenger hunt while navigating through mostly flat terrain with some rocky sections.
I make Youtube videos on hiking areas around thunder bay Channel name: Vicarious Living Video name: Peaceful Walk: Mills Block Forest This location is quite popular and has a ton of bugs in spring so bring that BUG SPRAY. The long stretch is quite flat with some board walks over all great walking spot with friends. I Recommend

A great hiking/walking trail. Not a long drive to get there which is a plus. It's paths are wide and easy to manage. Great for taking the dogs for a walk and being in nature.
Joey C — Google review
Fun hike with secret magic rocks, bet you can't find them 😝
Vicky B — Google review
I really enjoyed walking in this forest.
Bita N — Google review
Mills Block is a good place for a quiet hike among the pine, spruce, balsam, birch and poplar trees, and 2 ponds. If you take your kids, look for the post for the Big Boreal Adventure scavenger hunt. It's mostly flat though the east loop has some steep rocky sections so wear good footwear. Watch for muddy or icy conditions in spring and fall. It's definitely a worthwhile walk.
Bruce M — Google review
Very nice trail. Well marked. Some downed trees blocked the way and made it difficult to complete the loop.

Hiking area
Mount McKay Scenic Lookout, located on the Fort William First Nation, offers a breathtaking view of Lake Superior and the City of Thunder Bay. Accessible by a 5km hiking trail or by driving up for a small fee, this lookout provides stunning sunset views and is a must-visit in the area. Visitors can also attend a local Powwow or explore the peak for an adventurous experience.
Mount McKay is definitely a must see Thunder Bay attraction!!! Sadly, the wooden boardwalk has been removed and was replaced with metal fencing.... There is no comparison... The boardwalk allowed for an unobstructed view of Thunder Bay. The metal fencing gives a sort of prison-like feeling to it. I really do hope that it is a temporary fix!!!
David O — Google review
We came on a cloudy day and couldn’t even see the mountain but waited an hour and it cleared up to a beautiful view of both the mountain and the city below. Worth the $10 per car admission fee. Would wait till a sunny day to do it again.
Quinton M — Google review
Great. Be prepared for a challenging but rewarding hike. Bring lots of water and wear good shoes. If you have small kids, be very cautious as the trail will present unprotected cliff drops as well as slippery surfaces.
Soban — Google review
Nice views but not much to do. 10 minute stop, unless it's a very nice day. $10 entrance per car.
Dima B — Google review
Nice spot to look out over the city on top of a hill. You can also see sleeping giant from here. $10 entry fee if coming by car.
Dane B — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit to Mount McKay Scenic Lookout. The views were wonderful from the top of the mountain. The short hike (20 minutes?) was somewhat steep but well worth it. The very nice woman collecting the tolls at the gate told me about the hike - thank you!
Adrian A — Google review
The lookout on Mt. McKay is accessed through the Fort William First Nation's. There is a small fee to drive your vehicle to the lookout at the gate. You can choose to attend a local Powwow or make an excursion to the peak if your healthy and adventurous. The view overlooks Lake Superior and the City of Thunder Bay and offers some exquisite sunset views on the right day. It is a must stop when visiting this North Western area. 👍 👍
Joseph C — Google review
You have to pay to enter the Park. You can drive up to a lower overlook, but to get to the top you need to hike up the trail. Its short trail but get ready for a very steep one. Once you get to the top, follow the random small trails past the first couple towers and eventually it'll lead you to the right cliff side for breath taking views and a tremendous wind coming up the mountain.

Always a blast here, great place for taking photos, walking dogs, lots of rock climbing locations, and in all a good place to go if you want to take in lots of nice views, without even having to travel far. No matter the season, this is my go to place to walk the dog.
Keegan B — Google review
Really nice place for a small walk and mountain biking. Will be blessed with some mountain views.
Noble T — Google review
Beautiful spot to sit and have coffee with an old friend.
Jordan F — Google review
Really nice view but as a visitor, I would have found it helpful to have signage to help figure out where I was going. I walked from Centennial Park and the trails have no names, and there are no trail naps available anywhere. Maybe it was because we're off season? Anyway if there are locals around they tend to be quite friendly and helpful. I would be hesitant to bring young kids up to the Bluffs.
Jacky V — Google review
Very scenic. Good place to get an idea of the waterfront, and Lake Superior. Too bad that the bushes near the path obstruct the beautiful views. Nice walking trail, but watch your step for exposed roots and spaces between the rocks.

Boulevard Lake, located in Thunder Bay, is a popular family destination surrounded by 650 acres of parkland. The lake offers a variety of activities such as biking, picnicking, frisbee golf, and water sports like canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. It's known for its kid-friendly environment with playgrounds and mini-golf. Visitors can enjoy the scenic 5-kilometer loop around the lake with picturesque views of Boulevard Lake and Trowbridge Falls.
This is one of my favourite places to walk when I am visiting Thunder Bay. The nice things about it is that it is in the city, I feel very safe with so many other people enjoying the loop around Boulevard Lake, there is lots of free parking and washrooms on both sides of the lake, it has beautiful views of Boulevard, as well as Trowbridge Falls, and Lake Superior, it is paved making it wheelchair friendly, it is clean, and well maintained. There is also a mini-putt course, tennis courts, brand new wheelchair play structure going up, you can swim and play on a supervised sandy beach, canoe, kayak, rollerblade, and even walk your dog on leash.
Pamela K — Google review
Beautiful walking/cycling path around the lake with great views
Wesley D — Google review
Beautiful spot to walk around the lake. The entire loop takes about an hour. There is a swimming area next to the park. I’ve enjoyed having group BBQs at Boulevard in the summers. I don’t utilize this place as much as I should unfortunately.

Abd A — Google review
Beautiful walk of course, but my friend and I was there recently and the portable washrooms needs to be paid more attention. Especially, the one at the end of the parking lot on the playground side near the mini-put was disgusting. Looks like someone been living in there, and it obviously 🙄 hadn’t been service.
C T — Google review
We always do daily walks around the lake when we visit our family. Never get tired of the well maintained park. It is a credit to the city and a benefit to the residents.
Paul D — Google review
Good place with nice view from the Boulevard lake fishway. There is a nearby dam named Boulevard lake dam. Public are allowed to walk over the dam. One side of the dam is very good looking and is dedicated for jogging. People are not allowed to swim near the dam. Reaching there is quite easy by transit by catching bus No.1 to current river. Visiting during summer and fall will be great. Even during winter when I visited, it is awesome.

Cowan Park is a serene and peaceful park donated to the city by a visionary couple. The trails are ideal for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or simply taking a leisurely walk through the woods. However, some visitors have noted that the city could do better in maintaining the trails as there are no signs or maps available, increasing the risk of getting lost.
It’s a good climb and a little tricky to find the trail, but the other hikers were helpful

Keep in mind that there isn't an official parking lot available, so street parking is your best bet for this outdoor escapade!
