Historical landmark
Tynemouth Priory and Castle is a must-visit attraction in Tynemouth, offering a blend of medieval history and stunning sea views. Managed by English Heritage, the site features interactive displays, restored gun battery, and extensive ruins that provide insight into its rich past. Perched on the headland, visitors can explore the ruined buildings while enjoying panoramic views of King Edward's Bay and the River Tyne.
I had a wonderful visit the place itself was absolutely beautiful, made even better by the lovely weather that day. The staff were incredibly helpful and even offered a discount since the chapel was closed for maintenance. The views were stunning, especially the breathtaking sea view definitely a “wow” moment! The historical atmosphere really comes alive, especially with the old artillery on display. You can truly feel the stories of the past in every corner. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
USIF — Google review
Really really worth a visit. It is mainly ruins but still stunning to look around. Sadly the chapel was closed for maintenance but the price reflected this. Thankyou Rose, the volunteer who kindly gave us so e background & history & was lovely to chat to
Elle R — Google review
It's one of the most unique, sites of English Heritage. 900 years of history in one site, located on a small piece of land. Priory, gun battery, castle, and a cemetery mixed with absolutely amazing vue on s Tynemouth seaside and "high street". And on top of that and amazing picnic place located in the part of old tower. 10/10 #English Heritage
Hermann P — Google review
Windswept location, English Heritage site. Minimal educational effort that could use more signage. A lot of the structures are fenced off for understandable safety precautions but which hinder photography.
Robert L — Google review
This is a beautiful place, noting it's a ruin with over 900 years of history and it's the burial site of three kings. The surrounding coastline and village add to a good day out.
Helena M — Google review
Tynemouth priory and castle is a great place to visit and explore, whether as a family or on your own. There's a bit work underway at the moment, but that only provides a reason to come back again when the work is completed.
Alan M — Google review
This castle is beautiful,in a stunning location, but certainly is not worth £9.50 to enter. I just couldn't warrant paying to see ruins like this and think it's a shame that beautiful historical places of natural beauty overcharge tourists to enter. It would be better if they asked for donations on the gate like other similar museums and castles do.
Sarah S — Google review
Definitely worth a little walk around but a shame there is so much fencing around the site blocking off large areas of the site. It would be great to see works done to make these areas safe

Aquarium
Zoos & Aquariums
Tynemouth Aquarium is a captivating destination that invites visitors to dive into the wonders of marine life. With its impressive display tanks featuring sharks, stingrays, and an array of colorful tropical fish, this aquarium offers an unforgettable experience for all ages. Daily seal shows and interactive feedings provide a closer look at these enchanting creatures, while the River Giants exhibit transports you to a lush tropical rainforest filled with giant fish.
Great aquarium on the coast. My 2 year old loved it! It's a decent size (not too big but plenty to look at), and you can go in and out during the day - we went around twice. We both loved the seal show and baby seals, and he was so excited about the sharks and rays and eels. The staff were super helpful, helping us look for the elusive eel he so desperately wanted to see!
Dawn R — Google review
There was a little wait to get your stamp to get in the price wasn't too bad. There was too many people when we were there we felt rushed around. At the seal show there was no point going as the small deck area was full, but you could sit on the grass in front of it but it was hard for me to see let alone a toddler, and the sound wasnt very good so we went to the small play area, stayed there for a bit and as we went to see more of the fishes the seal show ended, we sort of got ushered through the tunnel to the end. The good bit is that you could go through it all again which we did but it was boring so we left and went to the beach
Jaimie N — Google review
A great little marine-lover's excursion. They have a fantastic array of sea-life to observe, from a gorgeously inquisitive octopus, an immersive reef-tip shark tunnel, educational seal performances and beautiful sea horses and cute axolotl. You can spend a over an hour looking around and it is worth looking up the feeding times to really see the animals in action. The ticket is a little pricey, but the money does go towards care for the animals, and they have a seal hospital on site.
Georgie B — Google review
Great day out with my grandson. We both really enjoyed it and will no doubt be visiting again. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals.
Helleni T — Google review
A lovely family day out by the sea! The aquarium has a good variety of marine life, from seahorses and clownfish to seals and tortoises. The building itself is a little dated and not huge, but the location on the seafront makes up for it. Perfect for a couple of hours with children, and the views outside are fantastic! Our one year old thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Mathurange K — Google review
Warm welcome when entering. Clear route to follow with a good selection of different fish and aquatic life to see. Lots of talks through the day which are informative. Car park next to the centre that has disabled bays and EV charging. It is a pay and display carpark - free for blue badge holders. Small play area outside for children on nice days. The only out door exhibit is the seal show, although you can see the seals underwater for an undercover area.
Iain W — Google review
Genuinely a lovely experience. Very well thought out nice touches with the passport stamp etc but main thing would be is it a little overpriced?! Must say we went for the yearly pass as we live near this however for people visiting it seemed a little expensive as it doesn’t really last longer than 1-2 hours! Side note would be to have more staff on the floor guiding and making the experience a little more interactive for the children. It’s essentially a walkthrough maze with some staff input depending on the time you visit (for talks etc).
L E — Google review
Its an aquarium and is an ok visit but woukd struggle to make it a full day out on its own. Can be quite expensive unless look for vouchers/discounts. It is quite run down and a lot of areas could do with some maintainence. The fish and displays all are clean and well kept.

Tynemouth Park is a fantastic destination for families, offering a wide range of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained. Visitors can enjoy boating on the Victorian Boating Lake, play 18 holes of Lost World Adventure Golf, explore the Pirate Quest Maze, or bounce around on huge inflatable slides at Jungle Wipeout. The park also features an outdoor soft play area with zones for babies and toddlers, as well as a pirate-themed play area.
A park with a lot of activities, the seasonal events for children are brilliant with staff really working hard to make everyone special. A nice cafe with good food & a decent chip shop too. Well worth a visit whrn the weather is fine
Colin B — Google review
This park is awesome so close to the sea. There is a pond with ducks swan and other birds in. Plenty of eating places and the Tynemouth Aquarium is close also. I took my mum in a wheelchair here she really enjoyed this place
Satty S — Google review
A Lovley park, you have a duck pond, a play pond, gardens, toilets to the entrance of the park, a cafe with more toilets. And joining on the side of the cafe is a fish and chip shop. That faces the Adventure park, you have the inflatables, one hour slot from age 3 to age 14. I think they start the slots on the hour. You need socks. But you can buy them. It was 35 pounds for 5 children for an hour, And they were all exhausted. Picnic tables to sit on. With music playing and a little shop for hot amd cold drinks and snacks. Then you have dinosaur golf, and a pirate maze, that you can pay separately or pay all together. Not sure on prices. Then across the road is the beach. With a heat wave and summer holidays, this was a perfect day for me and my family, kids said it was the best day ever, And staff were amazing. Also adventure park will be weather permitting and seasonal Fish and chips was lovely 😍
Lou — Google review
We went on the dinosaur crazy golf which cost £25 for 2 adults, 2 children and 1 senior citizen for 18 holes. Was a really different crazy golf as had parts that squirted water when your ball went through certain things which I’d never seen before. Parts of the course were very uneven so the ball slid about a bit on some holes but was still good. Had good model dinosaurs all the way round. The bouncy castles were no good as didn’t have any free space for 45 mins and they didn’t have any notices saying how much it would cost which was badly organised.
Michael S — Google review
We had a fantastic time at Tynemouth Park. There are lots of activities for kids, including the dinosaur-themed mini golf, the inflatable Jungle Wipeout. unfortunately the maze were closed. The prices are very fair, and the staff are welcoming and kind. Perfect spot for a family day out, especially with the beach just nearby. Definitely recommend!
Waleed A — Google review
Lovely place. Wipeout, Pirate Maze and café are all nice. The only issue is single-use plastic, non-recyclable coffee cups (even when sitting in), no recycling bins and a LOT of junk food! I think they could do better in this area.
David C — Google review
Everywhere else was really good and well managed. My kids really enjoyed the maze and inflatable but we had a small issue at the golf. We spent £10 on golf which is reasonable price for what you get but we made it to hole three on the blue course which there was a little pond with a pool stick to fish the balls out if they go into it. My daughter went to take her turn and hit the ball to hard which caused it to go into the middle of the pond. We tried everything to reach the ball but we couldnt get it back so I sent my daughter to see if she could get another ball because it's not fun when she can't play. 2 minutes later she comes back saying she can't get another one without paying another £1. There were no signs saying u had to pay more money if u loose the ball. We obviously payed to get another ball because we had only done three holes. As we played on we found that most of the holes were placed next to water so it was always a risk that the ball would go into the pond. We felt a bit anxious because we didnt want to keep paying for a ball every hole. Some shots are set up to go into the pond because there was two pipes and one of them led to the hole while the other led straight into the water and u dont know what pipe it would go out of. Out of all the mini golf I've done with my family we never had to pay for another ball if it's been lost.
Meg B — Google review
There are a number of different sections to this park. At the north end you have the boating lake bordered with a few flower beds and a World War 2 memorial garden. There are also toilets here. Then west of this is a large children's play area. The north end of the park has some bowling greens, mini golf and children's adventure area

St Mary's Lighthouse, built in 1898 on a tidal island, is a picturesque attraction offering coastal views and rich history. The lighthouse, painted in white with red cottages nearby, exudes a nostalgic charm and provides breathtaking sea views. It stands as a beacon along the coastline and features nature exhibits, a gift shop, and serves as the finish line for the North Tyneside 10k Road Race.
Such a cool place! Wait for the water to recede and then cross the causeway while checking out the rock pools. Nice lighthouse and some great views from the top. Plenty of seals on show too!
Arron H — Google review
Amazing place to visit. Was very blustery when we visited, but managed to see a few groups of seals resting up out of the water. Visiting the lighthouse is very interesting, and you can climb the steps up to the light itself for an amazing view over the coast. Such a lovely place!
Kevin P — Google review
It took me years to actually figure this out BUT there is a shed on the island, close to the lighthouse, where the RSPB kindly provide binoculars that lets you watch the seals. After years of literally walking past the open door to the shed it was an incredible surprise the first time I went in!!!!! Check the crossing times before you go. For fabulous walks on the cliffs with stunning views of St Mary's Lighthouse try the old Hartley Car Park. There is also a pub (Delaval Arms) which seems popular. Park nearby. Walk towards Tynemouth for gorgeous views from the cliffs. For people with children: at low tide St Mary s island s causeway is a fabulous place for rock pooling. The lovely gentleman who sells ice-cream & coffee always has a stock of clear buckets, spades and nets all reasonably priced.
Sophie T — Google review
Lots of parking (3 quid all day) areas then a walk to the lighthouse. Check tide times as path disappears under the sea! Lighthouse not always open, so check if going specially to climb it. Lots of steps spiraling up (no good if a fear of heights) then shallow steep steps to the top. Great views, little shop, hide to see birds\seals, lots of info and seals😍 Be careful walking on the rocks, hold kids hands, dogs allowed but not in the lighthouse. Path open around the lighthouse to explore the views, fab!
Ilona R — Google review
Really lovely place. Came here for a wedding where the tide comes in and keeps you 'stranded' for a few hours whilst the causeway is covered, it was a wonderful experience! The staff were very kind and helpful, and I've never seen so many seals basking on the rocks! There is also a great little museum.
Tobi M — Google review
Pretty cool experience to climb up the winding staircase and be greeted with a magnificent light at the top, paired with the unbeatable views. Easily worth the £6, if only to help them pay towards the internal repainting that’s in desperate need and will end up costing in the millions.
Marques — Google review
Beautiful place, nice to see the seals relaxing on the rocks and enjoying the sunshine. According to the nature preservation staff the seals only started to arrive in 2014. It was a great day out, got some great photos.
Michael B — Google review
Definitely worth a little walk around. Nice view from the top once you’ve climbed the pretty steep steps! Cool to see some seals chilling out on the surrounding rocks

Long Sands Beach in Tynemouth is a picturesque and inviting destination with a mile-long stretch of sandy shoreline. The beach offers excellent conditions for surfing and swimming, making it a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. Visitors can take leisurely walks along the beach, experiencing the ever-changing landscape influenced by the tides and time of day.
A nice sandy beach with lots of dogs. I love dogs so I do not mind. However, the sign says the dog should be on lead, which most people ignored and did not pick up dog poo. There were people surfing and a beach sauna in tents and dipping the sea in between.
Beyond B — Google review
Today me and Star had a lovely walk at Tynemouth Longsands North. She absolutely loved walking on the sand and taking a dip in the sea. Great weather with a cool breeze, but also walm.
Matthew T — Google review
Beautiful beach close to Clercoast metro station. It is a beautiful walk and dogs are allowed until the end of March. Definitely worth a stroll on a sunny day. It was quite windy but was still super pretty to walk on the beach. A must visit when in the area.
Cheyenne B — Google review
Beautiful beach. It was super clean! Almost got eaten by a seagull though
Alaina S — Google review
Lovely clean beach. Large areas are dog-friendly. Plenty of facilities such as cafes, toilets, parking, pubs, surf school as well as historic landmarks. Great views and ice cream.
Marie A — Google review
Great beach, it can get packed so pick your time carefully. The traffic scheme means it is easier to park at Crusoe's now 🙂. Whatever the weather there are always people here having fun, evsn swimming and surfung in the hail and snow 🤣🌊
Gregory H — Google review
Exquisite view and space to be with friends, family or by yourself. Eateries along the beach if you want to grab a drink or a bite. Lots of people come in to try surfing too.
Jen — Google review
Lovely long sandy beach popular with surfers; there is a surf school at the southern end. The incline is very slight so you have to go a long way out to get be out of your depth. There is a restaurant/caffe at both the north and south end of the beach, the one at the south end has lots of beach chairs out on the sand. As with Whitley Bay, the southern half of this beach is a no dog zone between May & September.

Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort is a historical site featuring the remains of a large Roman fort. Visitors can explore reconstructed gatehouses and living quarters, as well as a small museum on the premises. The fort offers an immersive experience into the ancient Roman era and provides insights into their military presence in the area. It's a great destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in archaeological sites.
What an interesting place! Free to enter. Museum exhibits to see and fully reconstructed life size Roman buildings to explore. I enjoyed being able to read all of the information around the site about the history. I love that the community is so proud of its history and cared enough to preserve an archaeological site of such importance for the public to see. The lovely ladies working there were very helpful and friendly.
Jessica P — Google review
Even way up in the north of England the Romans occupied the South Shields area. Building a fort to house soldiers and create a supply chain to try and defeat the Scots. But no dice there... This is a wonderful place for families to enjoy. There's a small museum and then signs for a self guided tour are very informative. Great for locals and tourists.
JASON R — Google review
It’s truly fascinating to step back into the Stone Age, preserved for over 10,000 years. The Arbeia Roman Fort is absolutely worth visiting and the best part is, entry is free! The centre provides maps and signs that bring the stories to life. One big question remains, though: how did people manage to build such incredibly thick stone walls?
Tamunotonye T — Google review
A little tricky to find but worth the effort. This is something of a gem surrounded by a school and housing - the story of the community is well told and it's worth taking time to explore the replica barracks and west tower. A venue that should be much better known, established to protect the mouth of the Tyne and, although not part of Hadrian's Wall, very much associated with that era. If you're in the vicinity, do visit! Oh, and it's free too!
Roger W — Google review
Little Roman gem found in South Shields. Two reconstructed buildings are very well done. Large area, smallish museum and shop. Be sure to donate something as its all free
B T — Google review
Free entry, free street parking and friendly staff. Educational and interesting displays. Can easily spend a few hours wondering around... 😊
Guy M — Google review
Amazing site to visit, please definitely stop by! The site is free to enter but donations are welcome. Before we entered, I actually told my partner that it could be a short stop because “how interesting can stone ruins be” AND BOY I WAS WRONG. The site has components that were reproduced using common building techniques at the time and were pieced together based on what was found while excavating the ruins. Additionally, they had descriptive information and insights about life in Arbeia. We even visited another Roman Fort site because Arbeia pleased us a lot, but it was not the same and I was disappointed 🥲
Inas — Google review
By far the best Roman site I've seen in Britain. As a museum, I prefer this to anything there is along the more famous Hadrian's Wall out in Northumberland. As well as the ruins, you have a small interesting museum with great artefacts. What made it for me is the reconstruction. You can climb to the top of the Gatehouse and go into a reconstructed villa, a little like Pompeii (which I recently visited). The site needs better signage though as one of the best bits, seen on my photos, is behind the barracks and easy to miss. This is a very much overlooked gem.

The Playhouse Whitley Bay is a modern theater with a sleek steel and glass exterior that offers a diverse range of entertainment. Following an extensive refurbishment in 2009, this beloved venue has been hosting tribute acts, family shows, cabaret, comedy, dance performances, music events, pantomimes, and theater productions. With its 630-seater auditorium and big screens for plays and films, the Playhouse frequently welcomes renowned names in comedy, dance, and acting.
Fantastic. Tonight's venue couldn't have been closer musically than if they'd have jumped into the originals skin. Fantastic crowd, fantastic acoustics great sound. And as a out and out fan of Pink Floyd, I was blown away by the fact they played a track from The final cut. Their ability was such to even improvise slightly when they saw fit, but being an awkward git I have to say they were note for note. These guys did a rendition to The great gig in the sky which was up there with the original. One of the backing vocalists was a tremendous sax player. Being as close as possible to the original musical genius and outstanding musical abilities this band showed tonight couldn't have been more convenient for even us from Blyth. We're gonna check to see the next artist we'd like to see there. At less than £70 for my wife and I to see this band is easily the best musical enjoyment we'd shared for some time. I recommend Whitley Bay Playhouse with no hesitation.
Daren K — Google review
My first visit in quite some time and I wasn't disappointed. It still looks as fresh and clean as when it reopened after it's refurb some time ago. The staff were slick coming in and quickly managed the queue. The sound was excellent in a comfortable auditorium with plenty of legroom. I've knocked a star off for programming only. Looking through the brochure it is virtually all tribute bands and the price is expensive for a bunch of pretenders. More 'proper' artists would have me rushing back.
Gordon S — Google review
Waited for years to visit the Playhouse then came my opportunity this week Great venue whatever you're there for Loved it
Martin M — Google review
Great venue for gigs, any where is a good seat as venue is small. Bar area not a great selection and my experience the beer was not cold birra moretti.
Ian S — Google review
I love attending events at the Playhouse. Great venue, friendly staff, always a decent (non-restricted) view. The bar isn't badly stocked, and they also sell ice cream. Auditorium isn't small (638 seats), but the way it's laid out makes the events more intimate.
Gillian B — Google review
Visited the Playhouse last night to see Fleetwood Bac. They were excellent, but I have to say that some mindless individuals, and there were quite a few, spoilt it by talking and shouting really loudly. Its such a shame as its a great venue and I couldn't fault it otherwise..
E M — Google review
Fantastic night from start to finish. Was made to feel welcomed from start of the night till the end, the show was really great. VIP room was nice, and view to stage was brilliant. Our party of 5 had a great night, thank you to both the Playhouse staff and the staff of the show. Will be returning for sure.

Visitors can explore an intriguing collection of artifacts that highlight over 155 years of maritime bravery and rescue efforts along the River Tyne's rugged coastline.
Unintentional visit. I was exploring taking pictures when I met the owner. Very nice man. Gave me a tour of this fascinating building filled with lifeguard memorabilia through the ages. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the history. Inside I felt transported back in time.
Sean O — Google review
We had a quick free visit to the Life Brigade museum on a hot sunny day in May 25. The staff were extremely knowledgable and proud of their heritage. We had a look round most of the museum and the star attraction (for me anyway) was going all the way up to the top watchtower. Well worth a quick visit if you’re in the area. Lots to see and loads of history on ship wrecks and life saving equipment.
Jason P — Google review
Amazing Museum staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome. Free entry. You can make a donation if you wish. So much to see & the views you get from the watch towers are beautiful. There so much to see along with stories.

Volunteer Dave gave us a very interesting talk including details of the headland history, info on their rescue equipment over the years, some notable shipwrecks and rescues and importantly about their rescue work. This is all done by volunteers. A rescue was underway whilst we were there. A young man had broken his leg whilst on the rocks. He was safely stretchered to an ambulance whilst we were there. Our group thoroughly enjoyed their visit. We really benefitted by having the group talk before we looked round.

Historical landmark
Tynemouth Lighthouse is located near the Prior Haven car park, at the mouth of the River Tyne. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the sea walls to reach this picturesque spot. The approach to the lighthouse offers stunning views and a chance to witness distant ships on the horizon. It's also possible to observe the coast guard in action. While cycling is not permitted, it's a scenic location with beautiful coastal views, although it can be quite windy.
Views from the lighthouse at Tyne Mouth. Long walk, but beautiful views depend on the climate. Quite windy. It is a very scenic spot to enjoy the coastal beauty. Unfortunately no cycling is permitted. It has a wonderful view from the Tynemouth priory site. Recently it was closed to the public (08/09/2023). Not sure when it will be opened.

There is a quiet magic to this place, where the steadfast lighthouse stands sentinel against the restless sea. As the waves whisper secrets to the rugged cliffs, the lighthouse glows—a beacon of hope and memory, steadfast through storm and calm alike. The air is tinged with salt and longing, and the sky, heavy with clouds, seems to lean close to listen. Here, time slows and the heart stirs, caught between the wild embrace of nature and the gentle promise of light. Whether you come seeking solace, inspiration, or simply the beauty of the English coast, linger a while and let your soul be soothed by the timeless romance of this view. The lighthouse, noble and enduring, reminds us that even in the greyest dusk, there is always a light to guide us home.

In the Percy Chapel, a single coloured-glass lancet turns passing North-Sea sunbeams into a fleeting, sliding rainbow on the old stone—easy to miss, quietly holding two millennia of Tynemouth’s history in a few seconds of light.

Was here last winter but it’s closed. Now we’re back during summer. We’re lucky there’s not much people as you can see in the pictures. It took us 10-20 mins to get to the lighthouse and it’s quite windy as well (make sure to dress appropriately). Perfect place for fishing as well !!! Not recommended for people with fear of heights 😅

Gates open today so took the walk along to the lighthouse. Sun came out so it was really nice walking along. Great views back to the Tyne and over to South Shields.

Great sunrise off the North Pier Tynemouth. Can't beat this place for a nice picture 👌 Storm pictures from last year massive waves 90mph winds.

Very cool! Definitely worth the long walk down the pier just for the sights you'll experience as you approach the lighthouse (the walk back also provides some interesting visual stimulus)! Once you make it to the lighthouse you can appreciate the tranquility of the sea and also watch distant ships on the horizon. If you're lucky you might get to see the coast guard in action as well! It's definitely worth the time to walk up to this lighthouse if you're in Tynemouth, almost essential I'd say. It's also worth noting there are benches regularly placed along the pier, so if the walk strikes you as a bit daunting you'll be afforded plenty of opportunities to rest (they're also pleasant to relax on just as an innate quality, whether you're exhausted or not).

Lovely spot, we went early so wasn't busy at all. Free parking for 2 hours was a great bonus. Would recommend for a stroll.

10Cullercoats Beach

Cullercoats Beach is a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay nestled between Whitley Bay and Longsands Beach. The beach is flanked by cliffs and rocks, with sturdy stone piers protecting it from the north and south. During calm days, the sea takes on a pool-like quality, and as the tide comes in, two distinct beaches emerge to the north and south. This area has been a hub for fishermen for centuries, with boats still being launched on the southern side.
Cullercoats beach is perfect if you want a little beach or to swim in the bay. There is sometimes issues with pollution in thr water, however i have personally never been ill. It is a short 5 min walk from cullercoats metro and has the piers, a lifeguard station with RNLI lifeboats and several caves to explore. Some accessible via the beach (tide depending) and other just over the far pier.

This is my favourite beach in this part of town. It's very sheltered due to its horse shoe shape and because of the high cliffs you can easily forget that you are in the city. Access is easy due to the nearby metro with step free access to the sand. There are also toilets. Because of this it can get busy. Although the end of the beach furthest from the metro seems to stay quieter. There are also some caves to explore but be aware, they get cut off at high tide.

Went for our usual daily walk as we love local it has great accessibility it is always spotless clean is a safe sheltered beach for swimming or other activities and above the beach are a plethora of very individual coffee shops

I've always loved this beach as I have wonderful memories here when i was a child coming here with my parents and sisters, me and my twin sister would play in the cave as it was dark and It was a good hiding place, I remember the big boat swings on the beach and climbing on the rocks when the tide were out .. I visit with my daughter and tell her about my childhood here with my family. Beautiful place to visit any day in the year 😊

This is a small beach divided into two parts. The north section is the larger and most popular area with families and swimmers. Seperated by a small section of cliff the southern part is equipped to launch watercraft from the slipway and facilitates training classes for canoeists. The north section is also home to the Lifeboat Station and part of Newcastle Universities Marine Biology Department. Unlike Long Sands and Whitley Bay there's no seperate dog area on the beach, they are banned from May through September. The two piers do afford some protection to the beach when the sea is rough but the reason I've only given 3 stars is being small it soon gets overcrowded and also the water quality isn't as good as other beaches because of it's topography and a water authorities outlet pipe near by. I confirmed this opinion of water quality with a number of life guards. I wouldn't swim there. The south pier is a bit higher than the north pier so you can walk along this whilst waves are still breaking over the north pier.

We only live a couple of hundred yards away from the bay so use it regularly. In my opinion it's one of the best places in the world. It's a reasonably shallow but large semi circular bay protected naturally by rocks and then two large stone piers. When the sun's shining and the weather is calm you can almost forget you're in the north east of England. That said the North sea will remind you quick enough! At high tide it's really good fun to jump off of the pier ends and the shock of the cold sea adds to the challenge! It's a really good set off point for paddle boarding or kayaking too. I think of the area as coastal rather than seaside as there aren't lots of seaside style shops or arcades which is a pleasant difference to Whitley bay up the road. There's plenty of good cafe's though selling hot and cold food and quality ice cream.

It does not get much prettier then this in terms of British beaches in summer.
