Historical landmark
Perched high above the city of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress and barracks that has witnessed centuries of royal history and military conflicts. This iconic Scottish landmark houses the Crown Jewels, including the oldest crown jewels in Britain, as well as the National War Museum of Scotland. Visitors can explore its ancient chapel, formidable towers, and legendary relics such as the Stone of Destiny.
Fantastic visit to this well maintained castle and to see the royal Crown Jewels. Absolutely stunning views of Edinburgh. Afternoon tea was brilliant too. Worth visit to see this treasure of history. Quieter in the afternoon for visit as very busy when we first arrived in late morning.

Incredible place to spend the day exploring! But tickets in advance and bring a picnic. There’s a shop to buy some food but it gets quite busy. Highly recommend visiting the castle, it’s amazing to explore and the views of the city are stunning.
Emily P — Google review
Wanted to make this a quick visit and then we ended up spending 3 hours here in this magnificent Castle. Amazing views of the city and lots of history and even watched the 1 o’clock gun go off. Highly recommended making this a stop on your list. Make sure to get tickets in advance because it does get busy and if you want to watch the gun go off you better find a spot around 12:30.
MSG M — Google review
Amazing location worth visiting and spending some time. Honors exhibition is an excellent example of how to tell a story. In other museum it would be just one stand but here you get to know a lot before you finally see this national treasure.
Madrath — Google review
We took the train from England to visit this amazing Castle! Do not be fooled by the recommended time estimates that you see online- plan for a full day unless you intend to speed through without taking the time to read the placards and observe the details! There is a lot to do and see during your visit! Try to get there before 1:00 p.m. for the canon firing.
Lexye S — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area. Parking is non-existent so expect to walk several blocks from wherever you find. But they have a lot of nice shops all down from the military museum and the castle. More than easy enough to spend half a day here but very cool to see overall.
Ever1881 — Google review
Despite a lot of dismantling activity to remove the stands that were used for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August, it was a great few hours at the castle. The structures are imposing and just exude history at every turn. Even on a regular weekday, it gets very crowded, so buying tickets in advance is a good idea.
Thomas T — Google review
A lovely castle and has been looked after well. Would just say it’s get busy and for me, it’s a bit annoying walking around slow people, or having them stand in the way. Would be nicer if they had more benches so those people could go somewhere. A lot of people just sat on the floor, which slows people down. But loads to take it, very hilly so people with push chairs or wheel chairs beware! Price wise, lot cheaper than a London / Kent castle and a bit more going on which is nice!

Observation Decks & Towers
Located in the heart of Edinburgh on Castle Hill, Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is a long-standing tower featuring five floors filled with interactive exhibits showcasing whimsical optical illusions. The historic attraction has been operating since the 1850s and offers a mix of Victorian technology with modern optical illusions. On the top floor, visitors can experience the Camera Obscura, which provides a live view of Edinburgh using only daylight and mirrors.
A must-visit for a fun and memorable experience! Each floor is filled with incredible optical illusions that kept us entertained and amazed the whole way through. We had a great time exploring all the interactive exhibits. The Camera Obscura itself was fascinating—both fun to watch and interesting to learn about its history. And the view from the rooftop is absolutely stunning, offering one of the best panoramas of Edinburgh. A fantastic place for all ages!
Wassim A — Google review
What an experience! I got there with 15 minutes before the next show. I had no ones what show they were referring to so I climbed up the 100 steps to the roof top to take in the views. Said views were incredible with with binoculars to see into tue distance. And then the show began, No photos and or videos in the 'show' but wow I personally had no idea what camera obscurer was and now I do and im impressed. The staff were incredible I loved every second of it. After the show I explored the floors and what there was to offer and I enjoyed every second of it (about 2 hours!) I interacted with 90% of what there was to offer as a solo visitor and had a great time but would say is ideal for families and people of all ages solo or a group . I laughed and smiled and scratched my head frowning all the way through the exhibits. 100% reccomend im only on day 2 out of 10 of my Scotland adventure but easily at the top of my list of things Ive done. I only added a handful of photos as definitely is somewhere to visit and better as a surprise!
Imogen W — Google review
Firstly, not the cheapest attraction for a family, but on a nice day this place is hard to beat. We loved everything it had to offer on every floor and just took our time. The views from the top (and a sunny day) are just stunning! The highlight for the kids was the mirror maze and vortex, not for those who get dizzy easily! Worth noting, they stamp your hand and you can return later, it's open until 9pm most nights, and we did go back when it was dark, it was quieter and again the views of the city lit up were spectacular!
John M — Google review
fantastic experience !! we spent hours there and enjoyed every minute. we went to the camera obscura show hosted by Erica who was a delightful presence and informative host. would highly recommend for everyone’s. super family friendly or a fun date experience
Maria G — Google review
Our family's visit to the Camera Obscura & World of Illusions was an absolute highlight of our Edinburgh trip, and a significant part of that success can be attributed to the phenomenal host, Louis, who kicked off our experience with the Camera Obscura show itself. From the moment we gathered in the top-floor chamber, Louis's energy and charisma were infectious. He wasn't just a guide; he was a master storyteller and an engaging entertainer. He had a natural ability to connect with everyone in the room, from the wide-eyed children were captivated to the curious adults. His introduction to the Camera Obscura itself was perfect – he managed to explain the complex science behind it in a way that was both understandable and utterly fascinating. The Camera Obscura show, projected onto the large viewing table, was a marvel. Louis expertly manipulated the device, bringing the bustling streets of Edinburgh, its landmarks, and even unsuspecting pedestrians right into our darkened room. He pointed out details, told anecdotes, and even made a few playful "scoops" of passersby, much to the delight of the children. His running commentary was witty, informative, and perfectly paced. He clearly loves what he does, and that passion shone through, making what could have been a simple demonstration into a truly memorable performance. We left that initial show buzzing with excitement, eager to explore the rest of the attraction, all thanks to Louis's incredible introduction. And what an attraction it is! After the Camera Obscura, we descended through five floors of pure, unadulterated fun and mind-bending illusions. Each floor offered a new set of wonders, guaranteeing something to amaze every member of our family. The Magic Gallery was a particular hit, with its array of holograms that seemed to follow you and pictures that shifted before your eyes. The kids loved trying to figure out how they worked, and even we adults found ourselves scratching our heads in delightful confusion. The Mirror Maze was an instant favorite, leading to shrieks of laughter and mock-panic as we bumped into our reflections. It's surprisingly disorienting and fantastic fun for all ages. Similarly, the Vortex Tunnel challenged our equilibrium and created some truly hilarious moments as we tried to walk through what felt like a spinning abyss. The interactive exhibits were brilliantly designed. My children particularly enjoyed the shrinking room, where perspective played tricks on their eyes, and the various optical illusions that made them appear to float or grow. There were plenty of opportunities for fantastic, quirky family photos, which we took full advantage of. The "Beuchet Chair" and the "Ames Room" provided endless amusement as we swapped places and watched each other seemingly shrink and grow. What struck me most was how well-maintained and clean everything was, despite the constant stream of visitors. The staff throughout the building were also friendly and helpful, adding to the positive atmosphere. We easily spent a good three hours exploring, and honestly, we could have stayed longer. It's an attraction that encourages interaction, experimentation, and a healthy dose of wonder. It's educational without feeling like a classroom, and entertaining without being superficial. In summary, the Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is an absolute must-visit in Edinburgh, especially for families. But if you're lucky enough to have Louis as your guide for the Camera Obscura show, you're in for an extra special treat. He sets the bar incredibly high, and the rest of the attraction admirably lives up to the promise of magical, mind-bending fun. We left with our minds boggled, our spirits lifted, and a plethora of fantastic family memories.

We had an amazing time visiting Camera Obscura in Edinburgh! The Camera Obscura show at the start was really fun and fascinating — a great way to kick things off. My kids absolutely loved every part of it. While the experience is fantastic any day, I’d definitely recommend going on a sunny day if you can — the views and the Camera Obscura show are even more impressive with clear skies. That said, all the floors are packed with fun, interactive exhibits that are enjoyable no matter the weather. It’s a brilliant place for families and well worth the money. Highly recommended for a fun and memorable day out!
AGB P — Google review
We visited as a family with our 2/3 yo and it was so much fun! So handy to get to once the castle closes and we got a ticket that allowed you to return during the evening (a great idea). There’s so much to see and play with, our LO loved it and we would highly recommend it for any young families looking somewhere warm to visit. A really interesting show in the dome and some excellent views of the city. We will be back!
WeeCuppaTeaNI — Google review
While on holiday in Scotland my daughter was desperate to visit this attraction. We were not disappointed over 5 floors and a roof terrace there were many unusual things to see . We found it great fun and although quite busy not so bad you couldn't get round. We visited during fringe week so Edinburgh was crazy busy so if you're not great with crowds avoid august. Quite steep hills to walk up to get to Obscura so comfortable shoes are a good idea. Overall a very good experience and good value if you like the unusual things in life.

The National Museum of Scotland is a modern and vibrant museum located in the heart of Edinburgh. It houses a diverse collection that includes relics from Scottish industrial history, natural history displays, and a variety of cultural artifacts. The museum's architecture is striking, with the Grand Gallery featuring Victorian design elements such as high pillars and a magnificent glass ceiling that fills the space with natural light.
Exploring the National Museum of Scotland was an incredible journey through history, culture, and science all under one roof. The architecture of the museum itself was stunning, and the wide variety of exhibits kept me amazed at every turn. From ancient artifacts to modern innovations, there was so much to see and learn. I especially loved the sections on Scottish history, the natural world, and the impressive displays of art and design. The interactive exhibits made the visit even more engaging, and the sheer scale of the collections was remarkable. The National Museum of Scotland was both educational and inspiring, making it a true highlight of my trip.

Really, one of the best museums i ever been in my life. There are so many thing to see inside. It is soooo big and i loved the architecture of the building. Your kids will love it too. And its completely free. I love Scotland cause they take care of their people and their visitors also.

🏛️ My Visit to the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh My visit to the National Museum of Scotland was a truly fascinating experience that combined history, science, culture, and innovation under one roof. Opened in 1998 (and incorporating the older Royal Museum building), it is one of the UK’s finest museums, showcasing everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts and Scottish history to space exploration and technology exhibits. The architecture is stunning — a beautiful blend of Victorian design and modern glass structures. Highlights included Dolly the sheep (the first cloned mammal), the Natural World galleries, and the interactive science zones, which were engaging for visitors of all ages. Visitor Tips: Entry is free, and you can easily spend 2–3 hours exploring. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace for panoramic views of Edinburgh. The museum café and gift shop are also worth visiting. How to Reach: Located on Chambers Street, it’s just a short walk from Royal Mile and Edinburgh Waverley Station, well connected by local buses and trams. Overall, the National Museum of Scotland is a must-visit — educational, inspiring, and beautifully curated, making it one of the highlights of any trip to Edinburgh.
Shanz S — Google review
A fantastic museum with an amazing variety of exhibits—from natural history to Scottish heritage and world culture. The building itself is stunning.” Free entry and incredibly well-curated galleries. Great for families, tourists, and anyone interested in learning something new.The interactive displays are engaging and well-maintained. I especially loved the science and technology section.”
Thouheed A — Google review
The Scottish National Museum boasts an incredibly diverse collection, spanning human technology, space exploration, clothing materials and design, and ancient civilizations etc. What impressed me the most was the animal gallery. It was breathtaking to see hundreds of different animal specimens displayed together—from Cretaceous dinosaur fossils and towering African elephants to fierce great white sharks, various running beasts, and adorable pandas. The most magical part was their eyes—all so vivid and lifelike, making the exhibits feel incredibly real and immersive. It was a truly fantastic visit that both the children and I thoroughly enjoyed.
Amanda M — Google review
What an amazing museum this is. Firstly it's free to enter which is brilliant, of course you can leave a donation to support. There are lockers available to rent for a nominal sum, and great cafes to refuel. The museum has a terrific amount of interactive exhibits, lots of places to learn and play. You could really spend all day here.
Graeme L — Google review
One of the best historic museums in the UK, if not Europe. Whilst the collections may not be as vast as those in other places, it's still large enough to keep your interest for many hours. What's extra special though is the presentation, the strength of which is hard to quite articulate - the space is very well utilised, and all of galleries present their collections fantastically. Cultural considerations are made and shared via information boards, such as why the museum chooses to use terms like 'mummified person' rather than 'mummy'. A brilliant job is done presenting history (and prehistory) with sensitivity and dignity. Of note is the historic animal taxidermy collection (and the fossils that accompany them), which sensitivities notwithstanding, has been beautifully maintained and presents the animals in a refreshingly thoughtful way. Staff here are very friendly and informative, and there are a number of paid exhibitions seperate to the vast free collection. What's more to be said? This museum sets the gold standard.

The Real Mary King's Close is a fascinating underground museum located on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, just a short distance from the iconic Edinburgh Castle. This historical landmark offers immersive walking tours through hidden streets that provide insight into the lives of 17th-century residents. The close was once a bustling community but was mysteriously covered up, possibly to contain the spread of the plague.
My son and I visited last May, and I was a bit apprehensive do to the possibility of steep walking areas, but to my surprise it was just fine. The ladies upon entrance were perfect, and our guide was wonderful, telling about the tales of Edinburgh of long ago, unfortunately we didn't see any ghosts, and Dr. Death was interesting to sit with, and the end of the tour was special too. (Don't want to blow it for others.) ENJOY, and have a brilliant time in magical Scotland.

devinately recomended. I took the Lost Close included tour. The Lost Close is not sooo much to see, but very interesting History and story about the finding of it. Becca (the plague doctor) I think was her Name was ver informative and entertaining at the same time. if you're interested in the history of Edinburgh you won't be disapointed

Very interesting visit. Great insight on the past in Edinburgh. It is a guided tour. Our guide was Lorraine and she did a great. The tour is one hour tour. I went with my son almost 13 years old and it was not too scary. Definitely, a must visit in Edinburgh.

Great tour! Loved that the guide dresses up as someone from the time period and stays in character too. Our guide Daisy was so charismatic and passionate. Her enunciation was a 10/10 too. If you're thinking of buying the plague doctor mask keychain at the gift shop, note that it doesn’t actually come with the key ring, you only get the charm itself!

We pre-booked this tour ahead of our short trip to Edinburgh, and we are so glad we did. Very easy to find and very fascinating to find out about the Close and seeing the underground world of the city. Our tour guide, Sam Wise, was very knowledgeable and explained the history along with being entertaining too. If your visiting Edinburgh , this is a must!

My second time doing The Real Mary Kings Close tour and I loved it even more this time. Such a highlight this tour, one of the best things to do in Edinburgh. Our tour guide Anthony was brilliant, he made the tour. I will be back for another tour when I come back to Edinburgh I love this place so much.
Brooke H — Google review
Great tour! It was very interesting and impressive to hear about the history of the close, and to walk through the actual remains. Our guide Sam was absolutely amazing. He was a great storyteller. Charismatic, and incredibly engaging. If you're in Edinburgh, don't skip this tour, it is 100% worth it!
Lianne B — Google review
First we were sad not to be able to take pictures downstairs (upstairs and in the shop it's allowed) but you don't have any time to be honest. Everything was exciting and the told history about Edinburgh and those buildings was fascinating! Anthony was the best tour guide we could imagine! His voice was perfectly loud, clear and well understandable! He gave clear instructions and was always kind and also very sweet at the end! His jokes were actually great and we had a lot to laugh between the facts and the "kind of dark" story about Mary King.

The Museum of Childhood, located in 18th-century buildings, offers a delightful collection of toys and games from the 1800s to the present. Visitors can explore exhibitions, enjoy puppet theatre performances, and browse through a charming gift shop. The museum showcases an array of fascinating artifacts such as a teddy bear involved in rescuing Jewish children during World War II, a dolls house with modern amenities from its time period, and a doll ingeniously crafted from a shoe sole.
This museum is an absolute gem for a free visit, starting with info about the early stages of life that children experience! Details are taken in from the different eras of time for them, artefacts and culture of old schools are demonstrated even. Plenty of board and card games, alongside toys throughout periods of time are shown in a fascinating collection! Appreciate how they have small notable things like train sets, the doll room collection is really interesting in itself too.
K. P — Google review
I love coming to the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh, it’s such a unique and nostalgic place. As someone from Indonesia, I was amazed to see so many toys and dolls I’ve never seen before. The collection is huge and full of charm, with items from different eras that really make you feel like you’re stepping into the past. It’s exciting to explore, and there’s so much to see, but I do feel like it’s a bit hidden, not many people seem to know about it. Even though the museum has a lot of fascinating displays, the way the items are arranged could be improved. Right now, everything feels a bit too packed or randomly placed, and I think a better layout could make the experience even more engaging. It’s such a shame that not many people come by, especially since the location is actually really good, right along the Royal Mile. Maybe using social media more actively could help attract more visitors, because this place definitely deserves more attention!

The toy collection from olden days is charming and nostalgic. It’s free to enter and sits right in the heart of the city. Lovely little museum for families or anyone who enjoys childhood memories!

The Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh is free to enter, though you can always leave a donation. It’s spread across several floors with different toys to see. The place is interesting not only for children but also for adults and older visitors. Little ones can not only look at the exhibits but also interact with some of them. There’s also a short film about childhood in the 1930s–1960s, offering glimpse into the past.
Kalista S — Google review
Amazing work. The vintage toys definitely make the watch feel like it’s a masterpiece from the collection. Thank you for the dolls, teddy bears, board games, puzzles etc grime the old days of Edinburgh even the country. Cheers.
Jack K — Google review
Small but a definitely enjoyful museum! The best part was surely the doll's room. I was surprised to see such different dolls together in one room haha The entrance with all those lovely messages about childhood times made me smile. You can definitely feel it is not just a combination of childhood related objects inside but an effort to make the experience the fullest with fine details considered in each corner. I really liked how some parts of the museum was so interactive, I can definitely see people can rekindle their childhood here. The entrance is also free, you should definitely take a visit!

What a fantastic place. Thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing. Everything is laid out so well. Great place for taking kids to as there's lots of things for them to do. Highly recommend. Also it's free! A donation can be made however.

The Royal Yacht Britannia, a large oceanic liner, served as the royal family's official mode of transport for over 40 years. Situated in the Port of Leith, Edinburgh's second most popular tourist attraction after the castle, it will soon offer a restaurant and bar with waterfront views. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a floating warehouse as an homage to whisky casks that were transported on ships.
I really enjoyed visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. The whole place is very well presented and gives you a great sense of the history behind this royal yacht. Walking through the different rooms, from the elegant state apartments to the simple crew quarters, you really get to see both sides of life on board. The audio guide and displays are easy to follow, and they make the experience much more engaging. What stood out to me is how well everything has been preserved. It doesn’t feel like just a static museum but more like stepping back in time. You can imagine the royal family traveling on board, but also the crew working hard behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. As someone from Hong Kong, this visit was extra special. Britannia’s last official voyage was to my city in 1997, and standing here brought back that piece of shared history. It felt meaningful and a little emotional to see it in person after hearing about it for so many years. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit. Even if you’re not a big history fan, the experience is unique and very memorable.

🚢 My Visit to The Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Visiting the Royal Yacht Britannia was an unforgettable experience that offered a personal glimpse into the life of the British Royal Family at sea. Moored at Ocean Terminal in Leith, Edinburgh, this magnificent ship served the royal family for over 40 years (1954–1997), sailing over a million nautical miles on royal tours and state visits. Walking through the beautifully preserved State Apartments, Royal Bedrooms, Crew Quarters, and Engine Room, I was amazed by the ship’s elegant design and attention to detail. The audio tour provided fascinating stories about royal voyages and daily life aboard the yacht. Visitor Tips: Book tickets online to avoid queues. Allow around 1.5–2 hours to explore comfortably. Don’t miss the Royal Deck Tea Room for a relaxing break with views over the harbor. How to Reach: Easily accessible by bus or tram from Edinburgh city centre to Ocean Terminal Mall. Parking is also available at the terminal. Overall, the Royal Yacht Britannia is a must-visit — a floating palace that perfectly combines royal history, naval heritage, and timeless elegance.

A fascinating and fun visit! We had such a great time exploring The Royal Yacht Britannia! It’s beautifully preserved and full of interesting stories about the royal family and life at sea. The self-guided tour is super easy to follow and gives you a real sense of what it was like on board from the elegant state rooms to the crew’s quarters below deck. Everything is so well presented, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The onboard café is also lovely, with great views over the water. Whether you’re into history, ships, or just something unique to do in Edinburgh, this place is definitely worth a visit. We left really impressed and with huge smiles!

We took a day trip out the Royal Yacht Britannia and it was well worth it, It's like going back in time when you see all the furnishings and layouts of the rooms. there is a lot to see but you can just take your time and take it all in. The self guided tour is very good but we just had one between us as there is plenty of signs explaining what things are. We used the onboard restaurant, had to queue for a little while but it is worth it as the food and service was first class. This is one of those trips you have to do if you are in Edinburgh it is well worth it. Steve and Jenny.

This was the highlight of my trip to Edinburgh! The self-guided tour is very interesting & well organized. It felt like a trip into the past. The ship is maintained in great shape & with lots of originals still displayed! Highly Recommend!

Very easy to get to. Free parking at the Ocean Terminal Car Park with very clear signage when you arrive as to how to access the Royal Yacht Britannia Experience. Tickets are worthwhile purchasing online in advance but it is easy enough to also buy on arrival. The exhibitions were very well put together and really display the magnificent Britannia at its best. An extremely interesting and enjoyable visit. Well worthwhile adding to your list of things to see when visiting Scotland!

I visited on Oct 7. As a fan of the Royal Family from across the pond, the Royal Yacht was a must-see on my trip list. The staff were very kind and friendly, and the self-guided tour with a free audioguide was great and easy to follow. The Royal Yacht is incredibly well preserved, and it was like walking through a time capsule; from the Queen’s room, through the Crew’s quarters and the engine room, the history held within these walls is magnificent. My only disappointment was that, due to a false alarm, we couldn't have tea in the Royal Deck Tearoom because it had closed early. But I suppose that's a good excuse to return someday!
Daniela G — Google review
Well organized. The self guided audio tour runs smoothly and each part is not too long. We were happy we did it! Nice trip from the city center to spend some time on the water of Leith. Taking the city bus was very easy. The view, food and drinks were amazing at the tea room. Worth the money.

The Royal Mile is a bustling street that connects Edinburgh Castle with Holyrood Palace, offering a mix of charming eateries, shops, and historic landmarks. This iconic thoroughfare in the UNESCO-listed Old Town provides a sensory journey through Edinburgh's rich history and modern-day allure. Visitors can explore hidden alleyways, traditional pubs, and intriguing museums while enjoying street performances and storytelling sessions. The area appeals to history enthusiasts, shopaholics, food lovers, and families with children.
My Visit to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh – A Walk Through History Walking along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh was one of the most fascinating experiences of my trip. Stretching from the Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, this historic street perfectly captures the soul of the city — full of charm, culture, and centuries of history in every step. The cobblestone streets, old stone buildings, and lively street performers create a wonderful atmosphere. Every corner has something interesting — from souvenir shops, whisky tasting rooms, and cozy cafés to hidden closes and historic landmarks. I especially enjoyed browsing the small local stores selling Scottish tartans, shortbread, and handmade crafts. You can easily spend hours here exploring side alleys, visiting St. Giles’ Cathedral, and listening to bagpipers playing traditional tunes. The views of the city from the upper end near the castle are breathtaking, especially around sunset. Visitor Tips: • 🕰️ Visit early morning to enjoy quiet streets or late afternoon for a lively, festive vibe. • 📸 Don’t miss photo stops near St. Giles’ Cathedral, John Knox House, and the Castle Esplanade. • 🛍️ Try local shops for authentic souvenirs instead of the tourist stalls. • ☕ Enjoy a coffee or whisky at one of the historic pubs or cafés along the way. • 👣 Wear comfortable shoes — it’s a long, sloping walk with uneven cobblestones. The Royal Mile isn’t just a street; it’s an open-air museum where every building and stone tells a story. It’s the heartbeat of Edinburgh and a must-visit for anyone who wants to feel the true spirit of Scotland.

Absolutely loved Edinburgh! So much to see & do within a short distance. Stayed very centrally with fab views - sea to the left & castle to the right. Bus tours are great way of seeing the city & staff very friendly. Definitely visit again as many things go didn't get a chance to do.
Fiona B — Google review
Walking along Edinburgh's Royal Mile was an unforgettable experience! I began right at the top, at the Castle Esplanade - where you can enjoy some good views of the city - and walked almost to the end at the entrance to Holyroodhouse. It was downhill all the way, along cobblestones that have been smoothed over, and with a wealth of fascinating history all around. There are ancient multi-storey tenements, narrow closes and hidden courtyards, historic pubs, and kirks with tall spires. St Giles Cathedral in Parliament Square is well worth a visit, and other attractions include the Camera Obscura, John Knox House, and Museum of Edinburgh. But the Royal Mile is not merely an open-air history museum. It's a bustling street with a vibrant atmosphere, enhanced by street entertainment: I encountered Scottish pipers in full regalia, buskers and a stilt walker as I strolled along. Walking tours start from here. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from, and lots of shops where you can buy Scottish gifts, clothing, confectionery and whisky. Of course this street can get crowded with tourists - it was uncomfortably crowded in the pedestrianised area close to the castle - but that's only to be expected, and it became less hectic but just as interesting the further down I walked. All in all, the Royal Mile was an experience I definitely wouldn't have missed!
Valerie H — Google review
Walking along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip, because it felt like the very heart and soul of the city. Stretching from Edinburgh Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom, this historic street is packed with history, character, and energy at every step. The cobblestone streets, the narrow closes, and the centuries-old architecture give you the feeling that you are walking through living history, yet at the same time the street feels vibrant and modern with shops, restaurants, and street performers bringing it to life

Everything in the city is walking distance. Absolutely worth a visit plenty to see. The surgeons and national museum are so large 2 and 3 hours respectively. The castle is beautiful and the weather was decent for November

Edinburgh is such a lovely place. I’m back here for the second time, and it truly feels like my peaceful city — my lovely city. I don’t even have the words to describe how much I love it. It feels like home, like family. Every time I’m here, I feel comfortable and warm. The people are all so friendly. Oh my God, what a beautiful city! ❤️

Wonderful experience to see the town. A long walkway with lots of sights. Souvenirs shops everywhere for you to pick up some cashmere, or woolly scarf. Lots of restaurants along the route which can get busy at times so might need to pre-book for dinner. Entertainers scattered along the path playing bagpipes or dressed up for photos. Great experience and you should definitely see it at least once.

Walking along the Royal Mile was an amazing experience that felt like stepping back in time. The cobbled streets, historic buildings, and lively atmosphere created a perfect blend of culture and charm. I enjoyed exploring the many shops, cafés, and traditional pubs that lined the street, each adding its own character. I also loved discovering landmarks along the way, from St. Giles’ Cathedral to the various closes and courtyards that revealed hidden gems of Edinburgh’s past. The Royal Mile was vibrant, full of life, and rich in history, making it one of the highlights of my visit.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse, a 16th-century palace once inhabited by the Stuarts, serves as the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. It offers tours of royal reception rooms, antiques, and relics. Visitors can explore the royal apartments, throne room, great gallery, and ruins of Holyrood Abbey. The palace is rich in historical significance and regal grandeur. History buffs and art enthusiasts will find captivating stories within its walls.
Visiting the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh was an incredible experience that really brought Scottish history to life. Situated at the end of the Royal Mile, the palace is not only beautiful from the outside but also steeped in stories of royalty, politics, and intrigue. It’s still an official residence of the King when he’s in Scotland, but it’s also very accessible to visitors, which makes it unique compared to other royal sites.

I loved being able to walk around at my own pace listening to the audio guide. Loved learning about the history and the kings/queens who lived there. No photos allowed inside. Beautiful gardens also and a café.

Palace of Holyroodhouse is a beautiful and majestic place located at the end of the Royal Mile. It’s one of Edinburgh’s most important historic landmarks, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s royal history. The palace features stunning architecture, elegant rooms, and lovely gardens that add to its charm. However, photography is not allowed in most of the rooms to protect the historic artifacts and furnishings. Despite that, the visit is truly worth it — the atmosphere, details, and royal elegance make it an unforgettable experience.
Mariam — Google review
Have taken so many friends and relatives on tours of Holyroodhouse, and never come away without learning or seeing something new. This is more than a palace or museum, this is a fascinating part of a nation's history, only diminished in its value because rogue political 'leaders' think they know better than the rest of the population! Well worth a visit, again and again.
M C — Google review
This was definitely worth a visit. Yes, it does cost to go in but the handset made it worthwhile as they had an interactive app that helped the kids to learn, search and play. Out of all the historic sites we went to, they learnt the most at this site. The palace was beautiful and well maintained. There was one area (tight staircase heading to Mary's room) that would be an issue to get to for those who struggle to walk upstairs. There was no signage to provide another route. Other than that, we had a fabulous time and my 3 kids aged from 7 to 14 all enjoyed it. All in all, a breathtaking

Really cool place to visit! You get to walk through real royal rooms and learn lots of interesting stories (the audio guide is super helpful). The palace feels grand but still very peaceful, and the gardens are beautiful too. A perfect stop if you want a mix of history and chill vibes in Edinburgh.

A very worthwhile experience if it's your first time, interesting and informative with something of a focus on the history of Earth Science that is rare to see. But if you have been before then it's not much changed since your last visit, the parking is expensive (and poorly signposted) and the lifts to the car park may not be working.

Visited with my family, and kids absolutely love this place! Each exhibition gives us an immersive experience. We also had the chance to visit the planetarium, which is an amazing show. My favourite is the 3D movie inside. It was amazing! I highly recommend booking the package, including the planetarium. There's a gift shop and cafe too. I had a lovely day there, it is a very convenient place, the location is also just a walking distance from the train station. It's a guided tour. Before the entrance, we offered to put our bags and belonging to the blue box. I forgot to take mine after the show. I came back and filled the lost and found form, and after a few days, I decided to contact them via online platform. I'm glad that they finally contacted me to pick up my belongings. Thank you very much. Would love to go back. Wonderful experience, worth visiting while in Edinburgh!

Churches & Cathedrals
St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is a grand Gothic medieval building and a Presbyterian place of worship. It was originally established in 854 but the present structure dates back to 1485. The cathedral is named after the city's patron saint and features a wide facade with Gothic windows, finials, and an unusual ventilated crown spire formed by eight flying buttresses.
St Giles’ Cathedral is a stunning and peaceful place right in the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. The architecture is absolutely beautiful. It’s full of history and detail—you can really feel the atmosphere of the old city inside. Even if you’re not religious, it’s worth visiting for the art, the calm environment, and the impressive craftsmanship. The staff are friendly and happy to share information about the cathedral’s history. A must-see landmark when exploring Edinburgh!

A beautiful and stunning cathedral. My travel group was privileged to enter during the tail end of a choir rehearsal with the massive sound of a mighty pipe organ reverberating sonics in the vast stone arches. Absolutely go to a concert there if you love fine choral music and organ works! There is a very special chapel dedicated to the "Order of the Thistle' with unique and intricate carvings to marvel at, and admire. This is where HRH Queen Elizabeth II lay in state. A great visit.

St. Giles Cathedral, a beautiful and stunning architectural masterpiece nestled in the heart of Royal Mile, is a must-visit in Edinburgh. Its impressive and picturesque exterior and interior, adorned with awe-inspiring stonework and stained glass, leave visitors in awe. While the cathedral is free to enter, donations are recommended. Be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season and time of day. A small souvenir shop inside offers a variety of items to take home. Afterward, relax on the chairs and immerse yourself in the cathedral’s beauty. Overall, St. Giles Cathedral is a highly recommended addition to your Edinburgh itinerary.
Kevin F — Google review
The most beautiful cathedral i ve ever seen in my life. Absolutely gorgeous from inside and outside. I disliked the fact that there was a person at the entrance, asking every visitor for donations... Made me feel uncomfortable. Its not all about money in this world...
Dimitris K — Google review
One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Edinburgh. The architecture is breathtaking! The pictures do not do it justice, and sadly the videos will not upload. There are many stain glass windows telling the magnificent Bible stories. There was a choir singing when we were there, and the sound echoing through sounded heavenly. The saddest part was a bit of old Scottish history....John Knox (see statue below) was a lead reformer to start the Church of Scotland was defamed with his grave being marked by the plaque below in the middle of a parking lot outside the church.
Tracy E — Google review
Beautiful gothic cathedral full of history. It was free to enter but donations are preferred. Plaques from various points in history are installed for your education as well as a mock up of the original scripture for the national covenant and the protests statue of John Knox and details about the Scottish reformation. You could spend about an hour or so exploring the entire cathedral if you choose. The giant organs are impressive as are the windows of stained glass. A vast array of seats are provided. There may be a queue to get in at busy times of the year but well worth a look around.
Tellus 1 — Google review
St Giles' Cathedral is a magnificent, essential stop on the Royal Mile, offering so much more than just a historical building. The moment you step inside, you are enveloped in a profound sense of serenity and peace—it's a truly quiet respite from the bustle of the Old Town outside. However, the undeniable highlight is the exceptionally good stained glass. It is some of the most beautiful and vibrant I have ever seen. The way the light streams through the towering, richly colored panes illuminates the interior and brings the historical narratives to life is simply breathtaking. The detail and artistic quality of the glass alone make this a five-star experience. Highly recommended for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a moment of quiet reflection.
Robert B — Google review
St. Giles’ Cathedral gave me total Harry Potter vibes: arches, stone the whole structure really reminded me of Hogwarts. Inside, there are all these historical flags hanging from the ceiling, which adds even more mystery and depth to the place. When we were there, a chamber orchestra was rehearsing, and the sound filled the cathedral so beautifully - it made the whole experience feel magical & cinematic. There’s also a lovely little gift shop inside with charming souvenirs. Absolutely worth visiting✨

The Edinburgh Dungeon offers a 70-minute tour delving into 1,000 years of Scottish history through underground rides and live shows. Despite its scary reputation, it's a family-friendly experience where visitors can engage with Scotland's history in an interactive and entertaining setting. The attraction features terrifying theatrics, special effects, stages, scenes, and thrilling rides to bring the country's infamous villains and gruesome torture chambers to life.
We've been to so many dungeons now and we're so excited to add Edinburgh to the list! Not many photos because you're not allowed to snap pics but it was fab. The acting was great, the props fantastic, some cool jump scares, and it felt like we'd walked for miles. The gift shop had some unique bits in there as well. Would definitely say add it to your dungeon experience

Brilliant fun was had by all. Mixture of ages from age 11 to over 50. Very interactive, don't sit at the front if you don't want to get picked on 🤣. Our group was quite a few times but fun nevertheless. Rides weren't working when we visited unfortunately. They take a photo of your group at the beginning with props and you can view at the end with your choice of backgrounds with a printed picture for £20 or other digital options if you wish. Gift shop at the end with plenty of merchandise. Great few hours out.

Knyslius K — Google review
For the most part this was an enjoyable experience, great acting throughout and a couple of scares thrown in for good measure. Not much of a continuous story and more just little scenes that don't really flow from one to the other so your never really sure what's happening each time you move rooms. The usual over-priced photos at the end set against a green screen that looks pretty awful and I would be surprised if anyone pays for these. Overall it was still an enjoyable experience

A really really good experience!! We have done London Dungeons before, just last year with the same group of friends and we did wonder if this would be as good, and honestly it was! Not as long and ok, not as many stories to tell but it didn’t matter it was still so enjoyable, the staff/ actors were awesome and it was nearly half the price of London so it was brilliantly worth going!

We visited as a couple on Monday morning and it was pretty fun. We payed 15€ per person when booking online. It's a cute hounted house, every room you visit has a designated theme and amazing actors. However, be prepared to talk because the show is very interactive and almost all of us participated in the show in some way. It was way funnier than it was scary, but that's what we expected, so it was a pleasant experience. It's also suitable for kids (even though there are dark themes mentioned; cannibalism, torture, plague...). Oh, almost forgot to mention, even the bathrooms are very funny (make sure to go check them out hahah).

Had a great visit yesterday with my two sons, 9 and 13. We had a bit of a wait to get in as my youngest son is in a wheelchair, and there was already one wheelchair user on the tour. But the manager and staff were very helpful and friendly. The manager explained that due to health and safety reasons only one wheelchair user was allowed in at a time. I did say to the manager that there should be something when booking tickets that asks the question regarding that. As a result of our extended wait we were given a full refund, and we still got to do the tour. And the tour was great fun. Lots of screams and laughs. My eldest son enjoyed the judge, my youngest son loved the Green Lady, and I really enjoyed the plague tour. But it was all great fun. With a special mention for the new Frankensteins Monster show. Would definitely recommend.

The Scott Monument, a stunning Gothic structure in Edinburgh's East Princes Street Gardens, pays tribute to the illustrious Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. As the largest monument dedicated to a writer globally, it features an impressive design by architect George Meikle Kemp. Visitors can ascend 287 steps to reach a viewing platform that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its architectural wonders.
The Scott Monument in Edinburgh is a truly magnificent landmark, I think it is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring structures in the city. Towering over Princes Street Gardens, this Gothic masterpiece was built to honor Sir Walter Scott, and its dark, dramatic spires give it a fairytale-like presence that makes it absolutely stunning in photographs. It’s a perfect location for pre-wedding photos, especially with the contrast between the ornate black stone, the lush greenery of the gardens below, and the historic charm of Edinburgh in the background. Whether you shoot from the gardens or climb the monument for panoramic views, every angle offers a romantic and majestic backdrop. Because of the elegance and grandeur of the place, it’s highly recommended to wear stylish or formal clothes to match the setting. Think classic suits, flowing dresses, or even traditional attire, anything that complements the dramatic and timeless beauty of the monument and its surroundings.
Fikha R — Google review
The Scott Monument is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks, standing tall on Princes Street in tribute to famed Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. Its striking Gothic architecture and intricate detailing make it a must-see for visitors. You can climb the narrow spiral staircase (over 280 steps!) for a small fee, and be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. Along the way, small viewing platforms and historical displays add to the experience. It’s a bit of a workout, but well worth it. A perfect spot for history buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone wanting a unique view of Edinburgh.
Muhammad K — Google review
The visit to the monument was great. It’s amazing up close, and the view from there is absolutely worth the walk. This Gothic-style landmark was dedicated to Sir Walter Scott. He was a Scottish novelist and poet, during the late 18th to early 19th century. Famous for works like Ivanhoe and Waverley. He’s known as the founder of the historical novel and played a big role in popularising Scottish culture and history worldwide.
Muaz K — Google review
We didn’t buy the tickets to walk up the stairs, but still had the opportunity to see this marvellous monument intrinsic of some of Edinburgh history! Surely you should visit it! It also didn’t seem to be crowded
Virginia B — Google review
This magnificent Victorian Gothic monument to one of Scotland's greatest writers towers more than 200 feet (61 metres) above Princes Street Gardens. Born in Edinburgh in 1771, Sir Walter Scott was a novelist and poet whose works included "Ivanhoe" and "Rob Roy". The monument stands close to the entrance to the gardens, and is lavishly decorated with intricate stone carving and 64 statues of characters from Scott's novels. I didn't take the guided tour to the top, but the views from here along Princes Street and across the gardens to the castle were spectacular enough from ground level. There's a statue of another famous son of Scotland, explorer and missionary David Livingstone, close by.

A proud symbol of Edinburgh’s heritage! We visited the Scott Monument and were truly moved by its historic presence. It stands tall and majestic, like a guardian of Edinburgh, surrounded by beautiful flowers and lush green gardens. The atmosphere feels almost heavenly - a perfect blend of history, pride, and natural beauty. A must-see landmark that captures the spirit of the city!

The monument is a truly magnificent architectural landmark and an important part of Scottish history. It is located at the heart of the city, adjacent to Waverley train station. There is an opportunity to take part in a guided tour, which will allow you to visit its first and third floors. I highly recommend this tour, as it will give you a 360-degree view of the magnificent Edinburgh city.

Located at the top of Edinburgh's Royal Mile near the historic Castle, The Scotch Whisky Experience offers a captivating journey through the world of Scotch whisky. Visitors can explore the process of whisky making, learn about the different regions of Scotland and their unique flavors, and even taste one of four whisky flavors. It was a very great experience and a very informative and a wonderful one.🙏 The information on how Whisky is produced , condensed and the process involved in making is just marvellous and beautiful. Our Whisky Experience guide narrated the whole process of Whisky making very much in depth of informative. The video narrative and whole experience was just very amazing and beautifully presented. I would like to applaud and give all the credits to our guide who presented everything beautifully🙏 The art of drinking Whisky also was very well presented 🙏👏 Everything was beautifully shown and presented. 👏🙏👌 I would recommend this as a must visit place for everyone who visits Edinburgh 😊

A very enjoyable and well-done experience for anyone interested in learning about Scotch whisky. The tour was interactive, informative, and thoughtfully designed—it moved at a great pace and kept things interesting throughout. Our presenter was friendly, funny, and engaging, which really added to the whole experience. The shop at the end is also worth a visit, with a great selection of whiskies to choose from. Definitely a recommended stop if you’re in Edinburgh and want to learn more about Scotch whisky in a fun and memorable way.

What a fantastic experience! From the very beginning being greeted in a warm and welcoming way by our brilliant host Archie, we were taken through the history of whisky making in an informative and entertaining way by Archie. Then we were given the opportunity to taste 5 very different whisky styles from across the 5 regions. After that, we saw the Worlds largest unopened whisky bottle collection which was simply stunning! And to finish, we enjoyed a Scottish food tasting experience in the delightful Amber restaurant. The evening was a truly 5* experience! 👍👍

Awesome tour. I like the immersive element and the storytelling of both our guide and then voice over. Also the fact you move to different rooms was appreciated - rather than just standing in one place for an hour. Darcy was brilliant. Great knowledge, led the tour well and created a great space to share. We also did the 3 course dinner after which was also amazing. Highly recommend doing that too.

Although none of us drinks whisky, I still wanted to do the guided tour of the Scottish Whisky Experience because Scotland is known for its whisky, and I enjoy learning about different things. We did the beginner’s Silver Tour, and it was engaging and interactive from start to finish. At the end, you can choose one whisky flavor to sample but you don’t have to drink it if you don’t want to! Be warned though. It’s strong stuff (around 70% alcohol!). Overall, a fun and educational experience, even for non-drinkers.
Hanna J — Google review
Great location near to edinburgh castle. The guide was sooo good and humorous. The processes of making the whisky are explained beautifully . You are also get to see a wonderful collection of whiskys and at the end you can taste a whisky of your choice ( from the regions). Such great fun and informative.

A highly refined and entertaining show. Much more high tech than I expected. I went in knowing basically nothing about it and left feeling like I have some knowledge about whiskey making and different parts of Scotland that give you different flavors. That was actually pretty true. Also the alcohol offerings at the end are pretty reasonable and they have a really nice selection. The collection was also super impressive.

Well worth an obligatory visit whilst in Edinburgh, as a novice to whiskey I opted for the Silver tour just to tour and try the 1. Also visited the very nice Amber Bar downstairs that's worth a visit after if not too busy. The barman is excellent and will find you one to your taste.

Surgeons' Hall Museums, located in a classical 1832 building in the Old Town, offer a fascinating exploration of the history of medicine and the University of Edinburgh's significant contributions. The museum houses three distinct sections: Wohl Pathology Museum, History of Surgery Museum, and Dental Collection. Visitors can delve into the city's role in medical innovations like anaesthetics and antiseptics while learning about notable figures such as the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes.
I really enjoyed our visit to the Surgeons Hall Museum. The exhibits and information were fascinating and how it connects to the history of Edinburgh even more so. Not every member of our group had the stomach for it - organs in jars is not appealing to everyone. As someone with a science degree, I found every piece fascinating. Our visit was quicker than I would have liked, as it was a hot day and there was not any cooling inside, so we were done in under an hour. But on a cooler day I would have explored more. The staff were really kind and welcoming.
Alyssa B — Google review
I enjoyed going through this museum. There are no photos allowed inside which makes sense as some of the items are not for the faint of heart. I did get a bit squeamish seeing some of the specimens. Reading the stories was very interesting and I really appreciate the advances in science thanks to people like the ones showcased here. It didn’t take long to get through, there is a small gift shop and there are toilets. There are stairs throughout and there is an elevator, if needed.
Vanessa B — Google review
We visited after we attended a walking tour of Edinburgh. We spent a good couple of hours here, with 2 teenagers. The number of specimens is almost overwhelming. The digital autopsy set up is amazing and informative No photos allowed inside but thE building and cafe are worth a visit in their own right. Highly recommend.

Just attended a tribute to The legend of Queen tonight at surgeons hall. It was amazing and Freddy ( Peter Marchand )had me smiling and in tears , he was fantastic with a brilliant band. I would love to return again. Peter is a brilliant showman with fabulous vocals and my husband and l would highly recommend this show to take you back to a great era gone by. I have sent snippets to my friend in Moscow and she loved it too.. don’t miss a great show

Absolutely amazing. The exhibits were fantadtic and real surgeons were available to take you through the tools and supporting information. The kids loved it. Really worth the visit.

A fascinating if a little macabre place to visit. Not for the squeamish as there lots of bits of bodies. Very well done though and there's a lot to learn and interact with. The historic body dissection is done especially well as is the new technology section. It's all up stairs but good lift access and the older members of our group appreciated the seats. Staff very friendly.
DJ D — Google review
This was the best museum I have ever been to. I work in surgery so I am biased, however anyone would enjoy this place. It was very well-organized and the exhibits were mind-blowing. No photos allowed inside out of respect for the human specimens- very good policy. All visitors were being respectful of this rule which was refreshing to see. Unfortunately the power failed halfway through our visit so we had to leave early. I would budget 2-3 hours to take it all in. Modest entry fee (£9.50) well worth it. Went on a Saturday and it was busy but manageable to navigate the crowds. There was also a 90-minute walking tour which we didn’t do, but maybe research that ahead of your visit. Must do!!! 🫀🧠🫁
Rachel G — Google review
The museum was really interesting and gave an insight into the early days of surgery and how technological advances has meant this has adapted over time. The museum included true stories and details of specific people who were a big part of the history of surgery. Real human cadavers are used in the displays and so pictures are not allowed inside. I highly recommend visiting if you are in Edinburgh.

The area is home to the historic Portobello Swim Centre, which boasts a Victorian swimming pool complete with an original Aerotone (jacuzzi) and Turkish baths. Visitors can also explore the charming old Victorian buildings along the 2-mile long beachfront promenade.
The beach offers a pleasant experience with its clean, sandy expanse, making it an ideal destination during favorable weather conditions. Please note that the area experiences high visitor traffic during the spring and summer seasons. Further exploration is recommended to fully appreciate the location's offerings.

Disappointing place. The sea is far away, and there is no safe crossing. You have to walk on mud to reach the water. There is no café with a direct view of the sea, unlike many other places. Cafés are few and very crowded, I couldn’t find a seat. (It’s good only for walking and sitting.)

This chocolate micro-factory offers an educational and delightful experience where visitors can explore the history and science of chocolate, witness the chocolate-making process, and even create their own delectable treats. With friendly and knowledgeable staff to guide you through the journey, it's an enjoyable adventure suitable for the whole family.
A really worthwhile and interesting experience. Kelly was brilliant with our tour, trying the different chocolates with the guided tasting session was the highlight, but we also learnt alot about its origins and varieties from different countries. Was also fun making your own chocolate to take home. Definitely recommend booking a tour if you have a spare couple of hours on a rainy day.

Delightful, mouthwatering experience 🤩 The fragrance of chocolate when entering the shop says it all, and the quality chocolates we got to try along with the excellent service will definitely keep us coming. Our tour guide, Bogi, was very friendly and witty, and kept your interest throughout the tour, keeping it interactive and fun. We did the wine & chocolate tour, that had a nice selection of wines, and even better selection of chocolates. We sipped and nibbled while learning how to pair flavours, made our own chocolates and browsed around the shop for a long time trying to choose among a wide variety of chocolates. The workstation was clean and tidy and the staff helpful and friendly. Will definitely go back to try more of the tours and get more chocolate!

What a great experience.we enjoyed learning about the cocoa and making our own chocolate bar with plenty to add. Was interesting to taste cold chocolate prepared old fashion way and also taste dark, milk and white chocolate with diferent flavour. Our favourite was the dark with scotch pine and Cadbury chocolate.

Hate to be that guy to be slightly negative amongst a plethora of 5 star reviews, but this tour is not cheap, so I guess I was expecting a bit more value. It was really informative and our guide kept us engaged and gave us the odd laugh. I did enjoy the samples, but the "chocolate making" was kinda basic. I think I set myself up for failure by reading all the great reviews in advance. I'd still recommend it, just maybe dont share the same opinion as others that its the highlight of Edinburgh (or anything close to that). This is coming from a person who loves and eats chocolate everyday of my life.

My wife and I visited The Chocolatarium during our anniversary (first) trip to the UK back in 2024. Sorry I'm a procrastinator 🙃, but it's a testament to how great the experience was that I'm still thinking about it 18 months later 😁). We did a lot of cool stuff while we were there. But, I love chocolate, so this was probably in my top 5. Our guide was awesome (Annabeth? it's been so long my memory is fuzzy), and the Chocolates were amazing. I brought home so many bars, I'm glad the guy at customs was 300 lbs, his face lit up when he checked my bag lol. One of my favorite chocolates was the Haggis flavored. I mentioned to our guide at the time, that it would be awesome used for chocolate covered potato chips (crisps). I can confirm, this is indeed delicious. I melted a bar down and covered a most of a bag of kettle cooked chips. 5 stars, would recommend, they should totally make/sell them lol. Anyway, we're already planning our next back to the UK, and going on another Tour of Chocolate is for sure going to be on the to-do list. I've included a pic of my top flavor pics 🤤. I'm so sad I'm all out🙁.

Edinburgh Zoo is a large parkland zoo that offers a variety of experiences for visitors. It has keeper talks, hands-on animal encounters, and free hilltop safari rides. The zoo is praised for its diverse selection of animals and pleasant scenery, although it can get busy during peak times. Visitors can see happy animals such as sloths and koalas, and may even catch feeding time for the sloths up close.
The zoo was a wonderful experience! I didn’t expect to spend so many hours there, exploring every corner and admiring each animal. They were all incredibly cute – if I could, I would have taken them all home. The place is very clean, well-maintained, with friendly and attentive staff. There are plenty of playgrounds and activities for children, as well as food and sweets stands for visitors. I was especially delighted by the delicious ice cream I tried. The zoo also offers many relaxing spots, with benches at every step – perfect for taking a break and enjoying the atmosphere. At the exit, there was a great souvenir shop, well stocked with something to suit every taste.

Amazing zoo experience! The habitats were thoughtfully designed with each animal in mind — spacious, intricate, and very natural. The layout for visitors was also impressive; you could see nearly every animal, whether they were active or resting, with only a few exceptions due to conservation efforts. Overall, it was an amazing experience and definitely one of the top zoos to visit. Do keep in mind that the zoo is quite hilly, so wear comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty, especially if it’s rainy or wet.
Alyssa C — Google review
Our visit to Edinburgh Zoo was an absolutely wonderful experience – truly one to remember! From the moment we entered, we were impressed by how well-organized and beautifully maintained the zoo is. The enclosures are spacious and thoughtfully designed, allowing visitors to see the animals up close while ensuring they live in comfortable, natural environments. What made the day even more special was the chance to see so many animals we had never encountered before. The red panda was absolutely adorable, the moon bear was both majestic and fascinating, and the sloths completely charmed us with their slow, peaceful movements. We were also thrilled to see a koala for the first time – it looked just like a living teddy bear! Our child was mesmerized, asking lots of questions and eagerly observing every animal with wide eyes and pure excitement. The zoo offers a perfect balance of fun and education. Each exhibit includes detailed and engaging information about the animals, making it a great learning experience for kids. There are plenty of places to rest, picnic areas, and cafés where you can enjoy a snack or a meal, so it’s easy to spend an entire day exploring without feeling rushed. We had an amazing time – full of laughter, curiosity, and joy. It was truly an unforgettable visit that gave us so many precious family memories. We highly recommend Edinburgh Zoo to anyone visiting the city, especially families with children. It’s a magical place that brings you closer to nature and leaves you with a heart full of wonder!

Winter visits - when it’s very dry, and very clear, and very cold - might be underrated… yes, the animals are feeling pretty docile, but the views across the park and over the city, onto the Pentlands, can be quite magical. So make sure you head up to the hilltop viewpoint (see my photos on the maps link there) to see how beautiful it is in winter. From there, now warmed up, it’s an enjoyable stroll downhill to see the different enclosures. Make sure you’re at the bottom in time for the famous Penguin Walk, and the monkey house is organised chaos to watch. The park itself feels more like you’re on a National Trust day out at times, so something for everyone, and you’re still well within the city - just a 15 minute bus ride. It felt like the animals were well looked after, none of those awkward feelings I’ve had at some other zoos.
Gordon D — Google review
Brilliant. I absolutely loved it. There is a bus stop across the road if you are coming from the city centre. There is also a car park at the zoo. All staff were very helpful on arrival. Today it rained heavily all day so some of the animals were staying in their enclosures so I didn't see all of them. There are some cafes, toilets and a nice gift shop. Please note Edinburgh Zoo is CARD PAYMENT only. The site is set on a steep hill but there are plenty of disabled facilities. All the animals are very well cared for and look at ease with their surroundings. Well worth a visit. Great for families.
Ann J — Google review
We absolutely loved the zoo! As someone with a disability who struggles with hills, the team gave me a very special lift to the top of the hill! We heard lots of facts about the penguins and other amazing animals! I can’t remember the staff members name but he had ginger hair!!! Our favourite animal at the zoo was the hippos, they were really really cute as well as the penguins! The giraffe viewing inside areas were amazing I must add! Overall a fabulous time, definitely recommend ❤️
Louisa H — Google review
Went here in November. Already winter. A lot of animals were like taking refuge at their shed. The zoo closed at 4pm. We arrived around 2:30ish so we didn’t have a lot of time. Still, it was wonderful. The giraffes were majestic and graceful. The pelicans were beautiful. I hope more people will adopt the pelicans here because the displayed thingy only indicated one person.
Stela B — Google review
Huge areas for the animals and many vantage points for visitors to watch them. I would say the best time is to visit around 4-6pm as the most activity starts from the animals at that time but all day is fine just there will be a lot of carnivores sleeping and most of the herbivores resting in the shade. WHEN you travel with car and use google maps make sure you don’t take the hospital parking lot route but go further 2 junctions and after the holiday inn you’ll see a steep corner leading into the parking lot of the Zoo. The animals are well cared for and beautiful. Easy to walk around the park and enjoy the time spent there. It took us 4h with a 3 year old on foot, so you might get it done in 3h. Food and toilet are readily available, clean and nice Zoo for sure.

A stunning, well maintained garden with the most amazing fountain. The whole thing just took my breath away, and the gardens ended up being my favourite part of our day trip to Edinburgh. I was in awe of the fountain, and the view of the castle is the cherry on top of the whole experience. I would definitely recommend a walk through the park if you're in Edinburgh. The National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait is a grand Victorian gallery located in the heart of Edinburgh, showcasing a collection of Scottish history and celebrity portraits. The gallery offers free admission and houses the national collection of fine art from the early Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Visitors can explore a range of different paintings and immerse themselves in the laid-back atmosphere while learning about the art.
The National Galleries of Scotland: Portrait contains… well a lot of portraits! Some are very famous, some are people I have never heard about. Nevertheless, there’s quite a wide range of art and sculpture to enjoy. Great architecture too, with the most memorable being the entrance hall. Best part is that entrance is free! Great place to stop by if you want to rest or looking for cheap things to do in Edinburgh. There’s also a cafe for coffee or food, though it was full when we visited.

The National Gallery of Scotland, located just north of Princes Street, houses a vast collection of portraits, as its name suggests. The museum boasts a diverse range of artists, both renowned and local. With multiple floors, I recommend starting from the top and descending. Each floor offers a wealth of historical insights into the portraits displayed. You’re likely to spend a considerable amount of time here, fully immersed in the museum’s offerings. Notably, the museum is free to enter, but donations are greatly appreciated. Overall, the National Gallery of Scotland is a spectacular museum with an impressive collection. The main hall is particularly beautiful and worth spending a significant amount of time exploring.

A free gallery within Edinburgh which i do recommend . The exhibition was celebrating King James VI & I marking the 400th anniversary of James’s death. This was the first devoted to him in Edinburgh in half a century . It features over 140 objects—portraits, letters, jewelry, textiles, manuscripts—many on display together for the first time, drawn from national collections and major institutions across the UK . It also had beautiful portraits of James’s Mother, Mary Queen of Scots and his Father , This was a paid ticket event. Cafe and gift shop on site too. Other levels within the gallery are worth exploring. The stained glass areas are beautiful. Very helpful staff pointed me in the correct direction as I got lost , it's quite a big building.

I stumbled upon this art gallery when walking through the streets of Edinburgh and much to my delight, like many of the museums in the city, it was completely free to visit! The experience was great, with exhibits spanning 3-4 floors, covering a wide period of Scottish history. The historical portraits of monarchs like Charles I who had an entire section to himself were fantastic and mesmerising. This museum was one of my highlights of the trip and all of its rooms will pique your curiosity through their decadence.

Housed in well-preserved 16th-century buildings, it presents a diverse collection of artifacts and exhibits that span from prehistoric times to the present day. Visitors can explore interactive displays and immersive presentations that bring Edinburgh's past to life. The museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike, providing insight into the city's social and industrial evolution.
Enjoyed looking around free museum. It is much bigger inside than it looks from outside. Especially enjoyed four seasons in faith and learnt about other religions. There is money machine that for a penny gives you a unique coin.

It's a bit like an old-fashioned museum... it was not the most exciting... old style displays and not really very engaging. A shame really as Edinburgh is much more interesting than what that place shows. Hopefully, it will be brought up to date if it can find the funds (or sell some of the silver)...

It's good to stop by before you go to Holyrood Palace. As an Edinburgh museum, there were many things that illustrated Edinburgh's history. I didn't know when I entered, but the museum was surprisingly large, so there were many things to see. If you like to see various collections, I recommend it.

The Museum of Edinburgh may be old, but it’s absolutely worth a visit. Tucked away on the Royal Mile, it has a charming, historic feel and is full of interesting artifacts that tell the story of the city. There’s a lot to see, from everyday objects to important historical pieces, but the highlight for me was definitely the silver collection. One of the staff members was kind enough to explain how they keep the silver items looking so bright and polished. They told me that the silver shines because it’s carefully cleaned and kept in glass display cases to protect it from dust. Apparently, once it’s cleaned, it can stay that way for several years as long as it’s well-sealed, and I also learned that the collection is very valuable! It’s those little behind-the-scenes stories that make the visit even more special. Definitely a hidden gem for anyone interested in Edinburgh’s rich history!!

Beautiful place to go. The collection are all well picked. And it is not huge that you can travel in a comparatively short time but got great impressions from all the shown items there.
Jack K — Google review
Located on the Royal Mile this museum is bigger than it looks. The collections and artifacts are well procured and spread out across several 16th century buildings with original floorboards and painted ceilings in areas. The museum features permanent collections as well as special exhibitions. We were able to see the featured “Four Seasons of Faith” showcase when we visited. The museum is smaller than most, so you can get through the rooms and displays fairly quickly and at your own pace. The staff are friendly, helpful and informative, there is a visitor’s log book where you can record your visit, and an interactive children’s area with a variety of different activities for them to participate in. Once you get to the end of the collections, you must backtrack all the way through the entire museum to exit. A downside for some but, an advantage for others as you may discover something on your way out that you missed on your way in. Don’t forget to take a look through the cute gift shop located at the entrance/exit as it has a variety of souvenirs and items for purchase. Access is free but donations are appreciated. The museum is not wheelchair accessible as it showcases items on multiple levels of 16th century buildings with steps and changes in level throughout.

Even free admission couldn’t make me give that place more than 2 stars. 🙄 The place itself is very boring after the National Museum but that’s not its biggest sin. What is? A centuries old urine stench throughout all the floors 🤮🤮🤮 We’ll probably it creates a medieval atmosphere but I didn’t enjoy it at all 😬🤦‍♀️

One of Edinburgh's free museums. Full of history and artifacts. Small and you can do it in less than 2 hours if you read most of the info cards.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, established in 1670 and relocated to its current site in 1820, offers a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The 70-acre garden features a palm house, temporary exhibitions, kids' events, tours, and dining options such as the Terrace Cafe with views of Edinburgh Castle. Inverleith House hosts a contemporary art gallery while the Rock Garden, Alpine Houses, and Woodland Garden are among its highlights.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is an absolutely beautiful place to visit – peaceful, well-kept, and full of stunning plants from all over the world. It’s perfect for a family day out, a relaxing walk, or just to enjoy nature in the city. Accessibility is very well thought through. There is dedicated disabled parking available, and the accessible entrance makes it easy for everyone to enjoy the gardens without hassle. A really thoughtful touch is the free water refill stations provided by Scottish Water – great for staying refreshed while exploring. The glasshouses, seasonal displays, and variety of plants are truly impressive, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors to Edinburgh!

This is a completely free, large botanical garden that runs completely on donations. Their map costs £2, and i highly recommend utilizing it. Most paths here are wheelchair safe, those that aren't are clearly marked. There is a lot of walking involved with some hills - nothing too strenuous. I had a lot of fun looking at all the plants. It is beautifully landscaped. Their staff has done an incredible job.

🌿 My Visit to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh My visit to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was a peaceful and enriching experience. Established in 1670, it’s one of the oldest and most beautiful botanic gardens in the world, home to over 13,000 plant species from across the globe. The garden’s vast landscapes, Victorian glasshouses, and themed sections like the Rock Garden, Chinese Hillside, and Scottish Native Plants area made the walk both scenic and educational. The gardens offered stunning views of Edinburgh’s skyline, including Edinburgh Castle, and were the perfect place to relax amid nature’s beauty. The John Hope Gateway Visitor Centre and café were also excellent stops for learning and refreshments. Visitor Tips: Entry to the outdoor gardens is free, but tickets are required for the glasshouses. Wear comfortable shoes, and allow at least 2 hours to explore. Spring and autumn are especially colorful seasons to visit. How to Reach: Located about 1 mile north of Edinburgh city centre, the garden is easily reached by bus or a pleasant walk from Princes Street. Overall, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a must-visit — a tranquil escape filled with natural beauty, history, and scientific wonder.

Such a lovely place to walk around. Is very well signed posted if in wheelchair or pushchair so know if the path is accessible or not. They hire wheelchairs and electric mobility scooter. Nice gift shop and has a couple of cafes. On road parking outside with some disabled places. Would definitely like to come back and see it in another season

So many different fauna and beautiful plots to explore! Didn't get the chance to view the glass greenhouse as it was cordened off, and we visited during the day so we didn't get to witness the Christmas lights in all of its glory, but it was great to walk through and admire. Perfect for couples and families as a day out.

A must-visit in Edinburgh — calm, green, and full of charm. Perfect if you enjoy nature, photography, or simply want a break from the busy city. Even though it’s within the city, it feels peaceful and spacious, making it a great stop for nature lovers.

Discover the world of Johnnie Walker Princes Street, Edinburgh's newest visitor attraction that opened in autumn 2021. This eight-floor immersive experience takes you through 200 years of Scotch whisky history. Enjoy stunning views of Edinburgh Castle from the 1820 Rooftop Bar while savoring locally sourced ingredients designed around the four corners of Scotland and their four single malt distilleries.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Johnnie Walker Whisky Tour. It's good value for money as you also get three different whiskies or cocktails included in the price! Our tour guide Julie was very informative and the story teller was very dramatic and kept your interest. The staff in the shop are helpful without being too pushy. I would highly recommend The Rooftop Lounge after for a nice relaxing drink and food, as the views from there are stunning. A definite must for any whisky lover.
Barbara B — Google review
Of all distilleries I've been to, this was the best! The interactive videos, lights, and guides were amazing. Making our own drinks were cool, as well as tasting the specials. And at the end, you get a discount on the store! Bought shorts, and whiskey glasses. Our guide Thomas was the best! He had humor and was spunky. Great entertainer. Definitely told everyone it's a must do when visiting Scotland. Oh, make sure you book online a day or two earlier, they sell out quite often, but have tours running almost every hour.
Deniese L — Google review
We had an absolutely amazing experience at the Johnnie Walker Tour! Our guides, Eilidh and Michael, made the visit unforgettable. Eilidh was super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable — she shared so many fascinating facts about whisky, how it’s made, and what makes Johnnie Walker so special. Then came Michael — his storytelling skills were out of this world! The way he brought Johnnie Walker’s story to life through theatrics, moving objects, and interactive screens was just spectacular. It honestly felt like watching a live performance while learning about whisky history. The whole building was stunning — modern, spotless, and beautifully designed. We even got to try three different drinks tailored to our personal taste preferences (and a few extra surprises along the way!). For only £30 per person, it was an incredible experience and absolutely worth it. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh — even if you’re not a whisky expert, you’ll love every moment! 🥃

What can I even say about this place — it’s absolutely fantastic. The whole experience feels premium from the moment you walk in. I ended up buying some great merchandise, including whiskey glasses and a flask, and even picked up the Blue Label whiskey hand cream and soap. The highlight for me was the personalised bottle experience. The staff helped me choose the right whiskey, guided me through the notes and flavours, and then let me pour and fill my own bottle. I even customised it with engraving, which made it feel extra special. The team here is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. They really take care of you and make sure you find the whiskey that fits your taste. On top of that, the atmosphere is beautiful — a perfect blend of modern design and classic whisky heritage. Whether you're a whiskey lover or just curious, this place is absolutely worth visiting.

If youre interested in being entertained while also wanting an experience like no other. You absolutely need to set aside some time. Totally unexpected theatrical affair will leave you wondering "what did step into?" Highly informative tour. The lunchn after was beyond anything we have ever encountered. Luckily we had Eden who took our requests and turned it into more than we could have ever imagined. She was attentive, eager, and excited to help. Her knowledge was vast with a story telling that transformed your imagination into live action. Not to mention, the views alone from the 6th floor are note worthy. We were blown away to say the least. After we made it to the show room where we met the very lovely Salome. Again, a complete well of knowledge. Her kindness and willingness to help us was more than anyone could really ask for.
Whitney S — Google review
A well-designed and engaging experience from start to finish ✨. It begins with a fun personality test that tailors the tour to your whisky preferences 🧭🥃. The visit covers the rich history of the brand and the legacy of the Walker family, all presented in a modern and interactive way. The only downside was the final tasting — whiskies mixed with soda, which didn’t fully capture the depth of their flavors. Still, a great experience for whisky lovers visiting Edinburgh. 🏰

What an incredible experience at the Johnnie Walker tasting on Princes Street! The opening show was pure magic!!! Ronna absolutely blew us away, it would be worth it just for that alone! Our guide, Archie, was exceptional: knowledgeable, funny, and kept the whole group engaged the entire time. We each got 3 full drinks, which was such a great deal and far more generous than any other tastings we’ve done before. The whiskies were all unique and delicious, making this the best tasting experience we’ve ever had. Highly recommend!

This was hands down one of the funnest experiences on our travels from the U.S. We did not know what to expect, but we definitely were not expecting a side theatre show. Incredible! The cocktail crafting and tasting was perfect and our guide Nick, was very knowledgeable and patient. His humor and banter added to the experience and this is a must do for your travels to Edinburgh! We will be returning! Thanks Nick and team!

National Galleries of Scotland: Modern One is a must-visit for art enthusiasts seeking contemporary and modern art. The gallery showcases works from renowned artists such as Miro, Hockney, Picasso, Emin, and Warhol. Visitors can explore a diverse collection dating from 1900 to the present day. The gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions and features a sculpture park with striking installations including Charles Jencks' swirling land circle.
Always a good place to visit sometimes the art is very accessible sometimes challenging but thought provoking. If you have children check the website as often things for them. Nice room to sit and look at art books provided, great cafe, not cheap but excellent and I hope the profits help support this excellent venue

Entry to the permanent collection is free but i left a small donation. It was refreshing to see that over two-thirds of the exhibited works were by women artists—an inspiring and unusual focus. The sculpture garden is lovely for a stroll, and I suggest borrowing the paper guide they have at reception so you never missed anything. Overall nice place to explore if you have time.

I’ve just stepped out of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, and it felt like walking through both a museum and a living park. Inside, the galleries were filled with bold colors and thought-provoking works; outside, the wide lawns and sculpture gardens were simply beautiful, a perfect place to chill under the sun. What makes it even more special is its location—right beside Dean Cemetery, where history and memory rest quietly. The contrast between the modern creativity of the gallery and the timeless stillness of the cemetery made the whole visit feel poetic, as if art, nature, and history were all part of the same conversation. 2025.08.17

A beautiful building that has a pretty parkland laid out infront of it. There are a few sculptures dotted around. It is free to enter. The artwork is set out over two floors. Floor two shows the permanent displays and floor one shows the temporary exhibits. There was enough to keep you interested, but equally it was not the best selection of art that I have seen. Staff were very welcoming and happy to answer questions. There was a fantastic gift shop and it was reasonably priced. There was, also, a cafe. The toilets were clean. There were two disabled toilets, though the one on floor one looked bigger and easier to use. There was a changing places toilet in the car park behind the building. You do not need a key to use it. The building is dusability accessible. There is a ramp to the entrance and a lift to the floors. To get to rooms 20 and 21 you have to use a separate luft. You need to speak to staff to gain access to the lift.

Came to this part of the city mainly to visit the museum, and it didn’t disappoint. The gardens surrounding it are beautiful and spacious, and entry was free, which I really appreciated. Inside, there were plenty of interesting pieces, including a Picasso original, but what stayed with me most were Louise Bourgeois’ Maman installation and Helen Chadwick’s fascinating Piss Flowers. Their Artist Rooms are on display until May 2026. The museum isn’t very large, so I went through the exhibits that interested me fairly quickly, a little bit more than an hour in total, but it was still well worth the visit.
Desislava — Google review
An amazing gallery with an awesome cafe. It has a few floors of galleries and a space for kids to practice art or play in the open space. There is a log that the kids can draw with or sketch with. One can go on the trail between the two galleries. Also there's a nice trail through the woods right next to the galleries. The cafe there has the best scones in Edinburgh. You must go there for coffee and scones. Had a lovely experience in the outside sitting area beautiful and pleasant. It has a free entry. Highly recommended to do it with kids.
Mrigank M — Google review
An amazing place. You can actually spend the whole day inside were you to see all of it. A reasonable amount of time to enjoy a good amount of the place would be at least 3 hours, in my opinion. You can buy food and drinks inside. The entry and toilets are free. You can visit a special exhibition inside, which you need to pay for. You can store your luggage, bags, and jackets but it costs money as well. Recommend 10/10

Lauriston Castle and Gardens is a hidden gem in Edinburgh, offering a glimpse into the past with its 16th-century tower house adorned with Georgian and Edwardian additions. Once home to Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Reid, this beautifully preserved castle showcases the opulent Edwardian interior design that the family bestowed upon it during their residency until 1926 when it became a museum.
My husband & I absolutely enjoyed the tour our guide explained the beautiful castle & it’s three interesting previous owners really well & he encouraged any questions from guests the gardens were wonderful a joy to see if you are visiting Edinburgh we recommend it

About to the end of our jetlagged day trip (to keep us awake as long as possible), we stopped at Lauriston. Although it was closed, the grounds were open and fun to explore. Beautiful views, amazing vistas, and lush flora kept our cameras out. It was also quite peaceful, with almost no one there besides our group. It made for a nice last stop before ending our day.

The tour guide was amazing! She shared so many interesting stories about the castle, answered all our questions, and made sure we were fully engaged throughout the visit. The castle itself is fascinating — it feels like stepping back in time, with everything preserved just as it was for over a hundred years. A truly memorable and enriching experience. Highly recommended!

Absolutely loved our tour of Lauriston Castle! Niamh was an incredible guide, extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the history of the house. The one-hour tour flew by, and honestly, I wished it had lasted longer. One of my favourite touches was the adorable game of spotting the little teddy dogs hidden in each room, it brought out the inner child in everyone and made the tour even more delightful. The Edwardian interiors are beautifully preserved, and hearing the stories behind them really brought the place to life. Niamh answered every question with enthusiasm and insight, making it feel like a personal journey through time. And the grounds! The views over the Firth of Forth and Cramod Island are simply unmatchable. Highly recommend the tour, whether you’re a local or just visiting Edinburgh, this is a gem you don’t want to miss. Don’t forget to book it online before you go ☺️

Craigmillar Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in Edinburgh, Scotland. Often referred to as "Edinburgh's Other Castle," it holds significant historical importance and is a popular attraction for travelers. Built in the 14th century, the castle has served as a safe haven for Mary Queen of Scots before her imprisonment and as a place of recuperation after an illness following the birth of her son, James VI.
I visited the castle on a sunny morning, and it was an absolutely beautiful experience. I got a tip from a local dog walker to approach the castle through the meadows behind it, as it offers the best scenery, and that was so true. The castle itself offered some truly great views from its towers and wall walks. I spent a good couple of hours exploring the halls, chambers, vaults, and spiral staircases of the castle, despite it not being a huge one. But it’s quite well preserved in its ruined state, and in fact that’s the charm of it; it is fairly intact. There was an older gentleman playing the bagpipes in the main hall and a highly knowledgeable enthusiast in full knight's gear preparing for some upcoming medieval re-enactment in the cellar below. Some parts are closed to visitors due to safety issues, but there’s still plenty of accessible areas for one to wander and absorb the history.
Timo H — Google review
Had a fantastic afternoon. I walked through Craigmllar park from bus as safer as no footpath on road. The walk through the fields and trees lovely. I followed path right around as only way to entrance. Proud climbed around roof! Wonderful views. Lots of curious stairways to explore and rooms, gardens and two fabulous old yes trees in middle of it. There was a room with art materials and games too. Outside a picnic area. Toilets too. A small gift shop. Really worth seeing.

If you want a hide castle away from the crowds this is the castle for you. Way cheaper place still all the history facts that come along with touring a castle from pre medieval times. Only complaint I would have is parking is very limited. The few up front parking spots are reserved for tour company’s. You’ll find parking along the street after you pass the entrance to the castle and make your first left on a street nexts to some homes. From there it’s an easy walk back up to the gates.
Chris K — Google review
Stunning castle ruins. One of the best castles I've been to across the world, mostly because not much has been touched since it fell in ruin and none of the areas are blocked off or renovated. Don't expect anything special here, and honestly if you're in Edinburgh for a day or two there are plenty better places to see, but if you have the time it is definitely worth going for the ambiance of the place.
Ilya — Google review
We came during Fringe Festival and it was a lovely way to escape the crowd. The view from the top of the castle is breathtaking and it's far enough outside of the main city to feel comfortable if you don't enjoy crowds. I would recommend purchasing tickets in advance and arriving before they open at 9:30 to explore the grounds a bit. There's a lovely walking trail near the castle but remember to be kind to the locals and not leave litter on the ground. This is a 15th century castle, it has short doorways, narrow walkways/stairs, stairs with uneven height and no lift. These are things you may want to consider before your visit. There is a restroom on-site, just inside the gate.
Carlie K — Google review
A beautiful place to visit, fairly quiet and off the common trail hotspots in Edinburgh. I had an easy journey there via bus and a 10-15 minute walk. The castle ruins are fully explorable and climbable, and the views from the top are stunning. On a clear day, you can see right across the bay and the city. There's lovely old trees growing across the entrance and fascinating fine details in the stonework. Be mindful of the fact that this place is not guided by tours, and being old ruins the space is not super accessible to those who struggle with walking. I'd also be careful with younger children, particularly around the staircases. For everyone else, 100% worth a visit!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a wonderful time visiting Craigmillar Castle! It was amazing to be able to touch the historic stone walls and explore every corner, right up to the top. The views were stunning, and the hands-on experience made the history feel so real. A must-visit for anyone who loves castles and history!

Of the four castles I visited while in Scotland, this was my favorite! I loved roaming through the castle and reading all the history around it in the guidebook. It wasn't too crowded and it's included in the Explorer's pass. If you're visiting Edinburgh, I highly recommend taking the time to visit Craigmillar.

My friend and I went to see the Scottish Ballet perform their Mary Queen of Scots, and as I was coming from a photoshoot with a massive suitcase, I just wanted to praise the lovely front of house staff for their prompt, polite and friendly service in helping me get sorted in the cloakroom. I was a wee bit concerned about getting out of the crush in time to get my belongings and catch my train. But again, the staff were helpful and super proficient and I got my cash and caught my train.

Decent theatre but they advertised seats as at the end but they turned out to be boxed in by audio booth. When we moved (plenty spare seats) - steward and female manageress last night were really rude. Also they need to manage smokers who congregate outside at intervals. Really grim to have to put up with that when you're trying to get some cool fresh air.

I recently attended the musical "Mary Poppins" at the Festival Theatre, and it was absolutely the best theater experience I have ever had! Everything about the production was breathtaking—the performances by the actors were incredible, and the choreography was simply stunning. The sets and stage design were amazing, particularly the actors really floating or walking in the air, which added a unique element to the show. I was genuinely blown away by how everything came together so seamlessly. The theatre itself is lovely and spacious, with comfortable seating and ample space between the rows. I highly recommend attending a performance at the Festival Theatre. It’s a fantastic venue that hosts outstanding productions!

It beautifully celebrates Scotland’s great writers like Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson, with fascinating exhibits, personal items, and manuscripts that bring their stories to life. The building itself is charming and atmospheric, tucked away just off the Royal Mile, which makes the experience even more special. A wonderful place to explore and appreciate Scotland’s rich literary heritage! It’s for free.

Such a delightful little museum. We very much look forward to stopping in and we're not disappointed! You got to love that the museums are free here and it takes all the stress out of the equation. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It will always be a great memory of our time here.

free museum! if you’re interested in old literature and its history i would definitely recommend going in and having a look!! very small and didn’t take long to go through, but i would say its worth it nonetheless.

Posting my photos of the RLS exhibit in honor of my mother, who wanted to write his biography and collected all his books. Another time I will post my photos from the Rabbie Burns exhibit, in honor of my father, whose Scottish roots were in Ayreshire and who loved Burns.

It was a free admission museum nearby that is good for visitors to see Edinburgh Castle and come out. I was able to enjoy a comfortable view because there were few people who watched it secretly. It was a precious time to find out the life of the artist.

The Writers’ Museum is so well curated and incredibly educational — as a huge bookworm, I absolutely loved it. It’s a wonderful celebration of Scotland’s literary heritage, with fascinating exhibits on Burns, Scott, and Stevenson. Each room is full of charm and character, showcasing personal items, manuscripts, and photos. The museum is tucked away in a beautiful building, which adds to the atmosphere. The displays are thoughtfully arranged, and there’s so much to learn about the writers who shaped Scottish literature. A must-visit for anyone who loves books and/or storytelling

John Knox House, located on the Royal Mile, is a captivating museum dedicated to Scotland's national reformer, John Knox. The house dates back to 1470 and was home to Knox from 1514 until his death in 1572. It has been transformed into a visitor attraction offering storytelling tours and historic exhibits that provide insight into Knox's life and work as well as the history and culture of Scotland in the 16th century.
It was pouring with rain, so I decided to visit the John Knox House to dry out. I am glad I did as it exceeded my expectations. The Mosman family owned the property during Mary Queen of Scots rule. You learn about their lives and their interactions with John Knox, who lived at the house for a few months. There were lots of interesting artifacts. The information provided was informative. It is worth going just to see the hand-painted ceiling. The ticket price was very reasonable. Staff were friendly and happy to answer questions. There were a few souvenirs on sale at the ticket desk. They desk is inside a shop so you can purchase books and general gift items here. There was also a cafe. There are toilets on the premises. These have changing facilities. Accessibke toilets are on the ground floor. Only the ground floor is accessible to people who use a wheelchair or have mobility issues. The upper floors are only accessible by steps.

Interesting but rather small location, a lot of artifacts too look at and the Dutch Delft’s Blue fireplace was a nice surprise. Worth a quick stop if you have 30-45 minutes to spare.

This was a fantastic spot to visit. Not only will you get to read and learn about John Knox and his role in the Reformation, you will be visiting the oldest original medieval building on The Royal Mile.

If you are interested in history, particularly the Reformation, you'll love it! Wasn't crowded at all and the little cafe downstairs is nice.

We enjoyed touring the home of John Knox. It’s not well marked, so we almost walked right past it. It is not wheelchair accessible to see the upper floors. The staircases are narrow and winding. It was worth stopping to visit!

Discover the eerie depths of Edinburgh with The Ghost Bus Tours Edinburgh. Delve into the underground chambers of the Edinburgh Vaults, once bustling with businesses and pubs in the 1700s. Join a nightly ghost tour to explore haunted locations and hear chilling stories while learning about the city's history and culture.
We had so much fun on this ghost bus tour! Tommy Terror was awesome and funny, a masterful storyteller. Family friendly jokes and atmosphere. Not actually scary at all… But it is packed with excellent history about real serial killers, murderers, executed thieves, and the local hauntings surrounding them. You have the option to get off the bus and stand in Edinburgh’s oldest graveyard and try to capture a picture of a spirit in the haunted guard tower. What better way to spend an hour? (Definitely get there at least 15 minutes early to get in line, as seating is first-come-first-serve. Our tour was sold out. My bf and I were 17 minutes early and we got the last empty 2-seat bench. A couple right after us had to ask a single rider to move and sit with another single rider so they could sit together. And one couple arrived 5 minutes before the start of the tour, got on the bus, realized they wouldn’t be able to sit together, and decided to get off and ask for a refund. If you care where you sit, be early.)
Miranda M — Google review
The Ghost Bus picks you up from a local area. The bus was full when we went for Friday tour at 6pm. The MC Tommy was super enthusiastic and entertaining, he made sure to go to both upstairs and downstairs of the bus which was super. We got to see areas that were important to the locals as well as hear cool stories. The only downside, I wish we got to see a little more for the price for 1 hour drive around.
Anna L — Google review
Definitely a nice tour with a spooky touch for everyone who’d like to get to know more about the “dark side” of Edinburgh. Our guide Tommy Terror -and of course our driver Angus- were great and entertaining. I can recommend it to everyone who has an hour to kill and wants some comedic-spookiness. Butttt it’s nothing truly mind-blowing or an absolute “must-do”. Still! It’s lovely, fun and entertaining.
Moon S — Google review
I've attended twice now in consecutive years and enjoyed my time on both occasions. First time I was traveling solo and at the second time with a friend. I consider the ride light hearted enough to be suitable for children who like spooky things, as well as adults interested in dark history. If you're looking for a truly scary ride this might not be it, so manage your expectations on that. Instead, it's a bus of great storyes, dark themes and light joking. Tommy Terror (host) seems to have a genuine passion for what he does and he's really good at it. He's a great storyteller, and during the 1 hour ride he covers the most important stories of the infamous dark side of Edinburgh. I will (and have) recommend the ride with a warm heart.🖤
Joanna T — Google review
We loved it! Tommy Terror our guide was very creative and lively. A true entertainer. We learned a lot about Edinburgh history and fell in love with the city. We highly recommend this tour
Gudbjorg L — Google review
This was so fun! Its a show on wheels and MC Tommy does his best to not only keep you engaged but is funny to boot! I really appreciated that you had the option to stay on the bus when you went to stops and there was still a video to entertain you with more spooky info. This was a fun tour and was a great way to see the city in a warm bus.

Very funny and entertaining bus tour. Our guide Tommy was hilarious and Angus the driver the same. We had so much fun and find out so many 'horror' stories about some of Edinburgh streets.

This was great fun, Tommy Terror was fantastic - I would defo advise getting to the bus early as we were only 10 mins early and couldn’t sit together (not an issue though as Tommy tells ghost stories throughout the trip so your busy listening).

The National Galleries of Scotland: National is a part of the three complexes that make up the National Galleries of Scotland. It houses a national collection of fine art from the early Renaissance period through to the early 19th century, including European masterpieces and Scottish works. The gallery also features seasonal exhibitions. The museum is free to visit, making it an ideal place to immerse yourself in art for an entire day or for a quick artsy break between other activities.
Beautiful building with historic expositions of life in Scotland and beyond through the ages. The first floor can get quite busy, but the galleries on the second floor are more pleasant to visit. Admission is free. Great to see todays Edinburgh in real life and then explore historic perspectives on the city. Recommended, must see for a city trip to Edinburgh.

One of my absolute favorite art galleries! There are so many beautiful paintings — including famous works by Van Gogh and Monet. I absolutely love it here! You could spend hours just walking around and taking it all in. Truly an art lover’s paradise!

AMAZING art (paintings, sculptures) and space design! And the fact that is free was extraordinary to see! It sends a message ❤️ And like always, love the souvenir shop. It is huuuge and has a variety of things to choose from: cards, books, handmade mugs, scarves, games, notebooks, souvenirs 😍

Take enjoyed this gallery, they have a lot of famous artists on display, we spend a few hours here looking around. They have plenty of seats throughout the gallery, and foldout ones if you want to sit closer for a while, or sketch. The height of some pieces was fascinating, and you could stand in front of them for quite a while, figuring out the story. My favourites were those depicting scenes from A Midsummer night's dream, the statue of the 3 graces, and the tall embroidered pieces by Phoebe Anna Traquair. (See photos) We started off at the cafe on the 3rd level, then worked from the top down (old art student trick!) which worked very nicely and meant we ended up finishing at the shop, where I bought a LOT of postcards! Highly recommend coming here if you're an art lover ❤️

This is one of the best galleries I've ever been to. The selection of art is extraordinary. The gallery isn't too big and you can comfortably walk through it in 1.5 hours. The museum store is fairly priced too.

I was delighted to see the art of great masters — Monet, Van Gogh Seurat, Courbet, and Degas — beautifully and tastefully displayed at the National Gallery. The Gallery boasts vast collections that span centuries, from Renaissance masterpieces to modern / contemporary art. It is a world‑class destination for anyone who loves art and history. Art lovers, dedicate at least 3-4 hours to appreciate the works. Unfortunately , I only had about an hour during my visit!

Greyfriars Kirkyard Cemetery in Edinburgh is a historic site with ties to literature and Scottish history. The cemetery, established in the 16th century, is the resting place of many notable Edinburgh residents and features impressive sepulchral monuments. It also holds significance as the location where the National Covenant was signed in 1638.
Walking inside this graveyard made me wonder how many people died and buried. Some were famous and people got to remember them because of their status and some were just forgotten. Life is short and do good to those around you, they will always remember it afterwards.
A A — Google review
Known as the most haunted graveyard in the entire world, this 400-year-old resting place has played a role in many of Edinburgh’s most important historic chapters. Today, however, this graveyard is most famously known for a little dog that’s buried here, called Greyfriars Bobby. It’s a story that will melt your heart. Greyfriars Kirkyard is a large graveyard that surrounds the historic Greyfriars Kirk. Kirk is the old Scottish word for a church. It’s was established as a burial area during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots. Ever since then it has seen over 100,000 people buried here! They were called Greyfriars as they wore grey robes – hence where the Kirk and Graveyard get their names! The most famous grave here is actually not that of a person but of a little Skye Terrier dog. His name is Greyfriars Bobby! As well as Greyfriars Bobby, fans of the Harry Potter books flock here in droves every year. a lot of people know that The Elephant House Cafe was a regular haunt for J.K.Rowling and is now known as the “birthplace of Harry Potter”. this graveyard is only a short walk away from the café! So, it’s not too farfetched a theory to think Rowling strolled through here. Although she has never admitted it, it seems as though she was inspired by the names of tombstones in the kirkyard and ended up using them in her stories! So, you’ll recognize many famous characters on the tombs like Potter, McGonagall, Moodie, Charles Black, and even Tom Riddle

One of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric places 🏰. Greyfriars Kirkyard blends beauty, history, and legend — from the touching story of Greyfriars Bobby 🐾 to the graves said to have inspired Harry Potter characters ⚡. Peaceful paths, old tombstones, and a special charm make it a truly memorable visit. A must-see when exploring the city. 🌧️✨
El H — Google review
What an amazing, historic treasure. The stones were incredible. Definitely a place to wander and take time to look at all artwork of the memorial stones.
Amy D — Google review
A must visit if you’re a fan of graveyards. The space is beautiful and historic. I encourage you to read up on some of the history and their inhabitants before going. There’s more to this graveyard than the Harry Potter references.
Aja B — Google review
One of the most atmospheric and unique cemeteries in the world — easily in my personal top 10 places to visit, dead or alive. Though not the largest, Greyfriars Kirkyard has an almost unmatched Gothic intensity. Tucked behind the ancient walls of the old town, its uneven cobblestones, weathered 17th-century tombstones, and looming mort-safes feel frozen in time. The surrounding Flodden Wall, the faded grandeur of the old kirk, and the perpetual Edinburgh mist give it a brooding, timeless presence that few graveyards can rival. This is the final resting place of legends and ghosts alike: - The loyal Greyfriars Bobby, whose little statue and grave still draw tears from dog-lovers worldwide. - The infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist in the Black Mausoleum — widely regarded as one of the most violent and well-documented paranormal entities anywhere (hundreds of reported attacks since the late 1990s). - The gravestone of Thomas Riddell Esq., which famously inspired J.K. Rowling (who used to write in the café overlooking the kirkyard) to create He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named himself, Lord Voldemort. If you have even a passing love for Scottish history, Harry Potter lore, true crime, or proper Gothic atmosphere, Greyfriars delivers it in spades. Wandering here at dusk feels like stepping straight into a 19th-century ghost story — beautiful, eerie, and utterly unforgettable. Tip: Visit late afternoon in autumn or winter for maximum atmosphere (and maybe bring a friend if you’re planning to linger near the Covenanters’ Prison).
Toby D — Google review
This cemetery in Edinburgh is absolutely jaw dropping in its beauty and historical significance. The tombs, mausoleums and graves are a sight to behold, with some going as far back as the 17th century. I walked through multiple times during my visit just for how peaceful and interesting the place is. Highly recommend!
Sam P — Google review
Greyfriars Kirkyard: A Gothic Tapestry of History, Myth, and Mist Wandering through Greyfriars Kirkyard feels like stepping into a storybook—or perhaps onto the set of a Jean Rollin classic. It’s part history, part legend, and soaked in eerie charm. Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, this centuries-old cemetery is more than just a resting place; it’s a hauntingly beautiful tapestry of Scottish heritage. The atmosphere is unmistakably peaceful, and thankfully, most visitors treat it with the reverence it deserves. Winding, snaking paths lead past moss-covered tombstones and faded memorials, with the Gothic silhouette of Greyfriars Kirk casting its timeless watch over the grounds. History enthusiasts will relish the graves of Scottish notables, the somber legacy of the Covenanters, and the literary echoes woven into the site by J.K. Rowling—yes, Potterheads, Tom Riddle’s gravestone is here (if you can find him lurking in the shadows). And of course, no visit is complete without a moment spent at the statue of Greyfriars Bobby—the legendary little terrier whose devotion endured beyond death. His bronze likeness just outside the gates is a beloved icon, and rubbing his nose is said to bring good luck. Even he adds a tender note to the Kirkyard’s layered lore. Whether you’re chasing ghost stories, literary Easter eggs, or simply seeking a poetic stroll through Edinburgh’s fog-shrouded past, Greyfriars Kirkyard delivers. It’s free to wander, but you won’t leave untouched.

Gladstone's Land is a historical attraction in Edinburgh that offers visitors a glimpse into the life of a wealthy merchant in the 17th century. This well-preserved building has a rich trading history and showcases the diverse social classes that lived side by side in early high-rise tenement buildings. Visitors can take a tour of the house and then enjoy treats at the ice cream parlour and coffee shop on-site.
What a wonderful stop along the Royal Mile!. The National Trust is to be commended for presenting this tenement house in such a fascinating manner. Our guide was a young woman with excellent command of the structure, its history, and period furnishings. She presented each floor carefully and responded to all questions. The tenement itself is charming and provides an excellent example of the city's social history, especially some of the achievements of its women. Well worth a visit.

Very expensive ticket price for a 3 level museum but what is even more appalling was the unprofessionalism of the 2nd level guide, an elderly woman. She approached me to start regaling abt the history but as soon as a large group descended from the 3rd level, she promptly cut off her speech and proceeded to entertain them. Should have just left this place alone & focused on John Knox house instead!

We were here on a food tour and were introduced to cranachan. One pic is the food tour portion size and the other is the actual portion on the menu, we were too quick to eat before remembering a picture. We bought whisky syrup and some souvenirs too and knowing it goes to fund National Trust for Scotland (museums and art galleries which are free) we felt it was all money well spent. If you want a highland coo buy it here!

Good small museum offered a glimpse of how borders in a rooming house may have lived over the ages. Especially interesting were the small kitchens (note which food was valuable enough to lock away) and painted ceilings. Took about 30-45 minutes to see without any rush.

First visit using my National Trust Membership. Lovely guides on 3 floors. Over 60 steps to get to the top floor and quite tight going round but worth the climb. The Museum on the Mound in Edinburgh is a captivating destination for those interested in the history and design of money. Housed in the former Royal Bank of Scotland building, it showcases Scotland's oldest banknote and offers interactive exhibits where visitors can attempt to crack open a safe and view a million pounds. The museum features an array of collections including fine art, ceramics, textiles, coins, and banknotes.
I had such a great time at Museum on the Mound! It’s not your typical tourist attraction, there were hardly any crowds, and that made it feel very peaceful and personal. The collection of old money and banking history is fascinating, and it’s laid out in a way that’s easy to follow, even if you’re not an expert. There’s also a fun little game you can play during your visit, which I found exciting. Its not every day a museum lets you win something! I’d highly recommend stopping by if you want something off the beaten path that’s still fun, educational, and surprisingly interactive.

Located in the historic Cannongate Tolbooth, The People's Story Museum in Edinburgh offers a captivating journey through the lives of the city's inhabitants from the late 18th century to modern times. Through three galleries, visitors can explore various aspects of Edinburgh life, including living conditions in tenements during the 18th century and stories of citizens throughout the 20th century.
Free entry. Museum situated in the old Canongate Tollbooth. Lots to see. Enjoyed the trade union banners. Interesting to see the map with defunct Edinburgh breweries. International brigade stuff too. Keep the red flag flying.
A T — Google review
I had a delight visiting The People’s Story Museum. While I had a good experience visiting the Museum of Edinburgh (which was across the street), I found this one far more engaging. Let’s break down why. There were several places where wax figures were presented to depict the daily lives of Edinburgh. I really liked the second floor, which featured different depictions of the labor class mobilizing to secure more rights. In particular, I was interested in how socialism gathered a strong foothold among the working class before it led to the formation of the Labor party in the early 1900s. If there one critique I can provide, it’s that several of the informational boards have a ton of text on them. So it can get very crowded trying to look at pictures, key quotes, and informational text. I understand that space is limited so I wonder if there can be one board on top and another on the bottom. Personally, I find that there is a lot of things left unsaid by the exhibits when it comes to working class rights and fighting for more rights during the 19th and 20th century. I believe a more cohesive overview or organization will have crystallized the experience even more

Like many of the museums in Edinburgh this one is free to enjoy. It's mostly covers the subjects of work and employment over the years of people living in and around Edinburgh. There are alot of displays and stories regarding life and experiences as Edinburgh grew. If you like history this will be a rewarding experience, and should that you about 30 minutes to and hour to go through. There are stairs as there are three levels of displays. I go here for the Loud Poets spoken word nights so I'm in buoyant spirits anyway BUT the dude that runs the bar/cafe is super friendly and quick serving the crowds. The architecture gives a contemporary cathedral feeling. Like stories are valued, treated with reverence. There's a lovely little bookshop.

Nice area, and really quite nice ambience, but the price are really far too high! £3.45 for a cup of tea, and you don't even get a 'pot' or two... is just ridiculous. Lovely place. Nice well laid out cafeteria, called the Haggis Box. Went to see Flora MacDonald and the zombies! Theatre was stifling hot. Old ladies were nodding off. Show was that good. Give that show a miss.

Visiting the Scottish Storytelling Centre was a highlight in our weekend trip to Edinburgh! We popped in for breakfast at the cafe. We had the two different types of haggis, which were both absolutely delicious - my partner enjoyed the classic version and I loved the one with red wine sauce. The man working the counter was very friendly and welcoming, and the space itself was relaxed and comforting. I especially enjoyed seeing the art exhibition by Hester Aspland. We then explored the bookstore and purchased a beautifully illustrated and autographed witch compendium - perfect for fall and spooky season! Unfortunately we could not attend any of the events, but they all sound absolutely incredible - everything from examining mental health in incarcerated populations to diving deeper into Scottish myths and legends. In short, it's a comforting place with delicious food, fascinating art and talks, and a lovely bookshop staffed by kind and welcoming people - what's not to love?

The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh is a great place to swim, with 3 indoor pools, a gym and 3 fitness studios. The pool has good equipment and staff are friendly and helpful, making it perfect for families. The cafeteria is ok food but can be pretty overpriced, making it worth bringing a packed lunch.
I just want to say a huge thank you to the lovely staff member who helped me right before closing time. Even though it was the end of the day, she was so cheerful, kind, and happy to help. It made such a difference and left me with such a positive impression of the place. Really appreciated the friendliness and care!

We went there midweek in the daytime and had to cancel our swim as the whole pool was lane swimming only. Very disappointing. Telephone before going to ask how the pool is being used, and if the diving boards are open...

I've been using Edinburgh Leisure for many months now under Active Healthy Minds. Really impressed with the facilities and regularly use the saunas and steam rooms which are amazing! Also as Edinburgh Leisure has many sites, I regularly rotate sites meaning I get to meet lots of different people and it's nice to have a change of equipment to mix up my training, particularly as I train 5 hours a day on average! I've already added 165 new followers to my Instagram 😀 I'm always very impressed with the professional and friendly staff. Due to my autism, I've been misunderstood in other social settings in the past, but I feel I can be myself at Edinburgh Leisure sites. They seem more inclusive than other gyms and I note they also offer training for people with physical special needs which is excellent. I'm afraid there are too many names of awesome Edinburgh Leisure staff to note here but I've literally not met anyone I've not go on well with, males and females, of all ages. One special mention however to Martin. He's been amazing 👍🏼 I'll now need to try and copy this review to all the different sites I've used which are all awesome in their own way.

Great 50m swimming pool - the only one in Edinburgh! I used it many times while preparing for my Ironman triathlon, and it’s perfect for serious swim training. As a fitness coach and triathlete, I really appreciate having this facility in the city.

Worst experience ever as I didn't get my refund when I try to cancel my 1-2-1 private swimming lesson which cost me £53.50 for 50 mins as I have really bad back pain. How am I supposed to learn swimming if I have back sore? I tried to explain them but couldn't get my refund. I have given 2 stars, only because the instructor before a week with whom I took a class, was very good, helpful and friendly. I will never go to them from now. Lost my hard earned money £53.50 for nothing.

Great pool! Best for the casual swimming time, purely because lanes feel too regimented. But great, very clean water, though the showers are still mouldy and people keep tracking dirty footprints into the changing room.
Nikolai H — Google review
I recently had a frustrating experience at the gym that highlighted significant issues with customer behaviour and staff responses regarding gym etiquette. During my workout, I found myself in a confrontation with a couple who seemed to believe they could reserve equipment simply by placing their belongings on it. I was using a piece of equipment that was completely vacant when the man from the couple approached me, visibly angry. He insisted that his girlfriend was using it, even though she was at the back of the gym doing press-ups. When she arrived, they both stared me down, trying to intimidate me into leaving. Feeling provoked, I reacted poorly and used a curse word, which I regret, however the entitlement they displayed was infuriating and the hostility was overwhelming. Despite my attempts to explain that there was CCTV footage confirming I was using the equipment appropriately, they dismissed my claims. Instead, they escalated the situation by complaining to the gym staff, who shockingly sided with them. This left me baffled and frustrated, especially since I was following the gym’s unwritten rules. What’s even more troubling is the staff's response. Instead of mediating the situation fairly, the trainers backed the couple up without considering my perspective. One staff member even suggested that I should ask other customers if they were using the equipment. This expectation is unreasonable—how can anyone be expected to "mind read" who is reserving equipment? It creates an environment where entitlement is rewarded, and individuals feel they can bully others into submission. As I was finishing up, I took a drink of water to quench my thirst but accidentally choked and ended up spitting some water on the equipment. This was not intentional, but the couple seized the opportunity to accuse me of violating gym rules. Their sense of entitlement was further reinforced by the staff's support, which is deeply concerning. It’s poor etiquette to think that placing personal items on a machine grants exclusive rights, especially when the equipment is not in use. The gym should encourage a culture of respect and communication, rather than enabling those who feel entitled to monopolize equipment. In conclusion, if you’re a gym member, please remember that clear communication and respect for others are essential. It’s also crucial for staff to uphold these values and ensure that everyone feels supported and treated fairly. A welcoming environment is vital, allowing everyone to work out without fear of intimidation or confrontation.

St James Quarter, a modern shopping destination that opened in 2021, is a must-visit when in Edinburgh. This vibrant district boasts 80 different retailers, 30 restaurants, and the impressive Bonnie & Wild food hall. The Galleria, with its bright canopy roof, houses cutting-edge brands including some making their Scottish debut like Stradivarius and Pull&Bear. Situated at the east end of Princes Street, this four-story center spans 1.
It’s just a mall but it is in beautiful shape with all of the stores you expect plus many high end brands nearby. This is a five for some free views of the area. Also clean and large free public restrooms

One of the top few malls in Edinburgh that one should visit! Generous common corridor space, located very near to Calton hill. Most of the shops’ fit-out carries a certain flavor and character. It carries both mid to high end shops, felt it would be great if there can be some Chinese and Korean dining restaurants!

We really enjoyed Salerno Pizza. We were worn out after a long day of sightseeing. We slumped over in our seats and the staff took it from there. The staff were great to us and were very attentive. We both recommend the Lemon Sorbet as a refreshing, quick pick-me-up.

We had a walk through here whilst in Edinburgh for a weekend. It's a great shopping centre and was surprisingly quiet (which was nice) for a Saturday afternoon in September. Really good mix of shops, we went in Lego, Pandora, Molten Brown and Samsung Experience. Also used the loos which were very clean and efficient with the soap / water / dryer all in one place over the sink. The whole centre had a lovely clean feel and great views over to Leith. We entered from the Waterloo Place end and then exited at the Multrees Walk end, where there are further shops of the designer variety. Really nice area in a city that feels quite grey and in need of a facelift in many areas.

Reminds me of Westfield London. With brands like Stradivarius, Bershka, Breaverbrooks etc. makes it perfect place for shopping in Edinburgh. Parking price is bit on the higher side. But it's city center after all.

The Stand Comedy Club is a popular basement venue where both well-known comedians and up-and-coming local talents perform. The club hosts a variety of acts during the Edinburgh Fringe festival, including familiar faces like David O'Doherty, Flo & Joan, Reginald D Hunter, Milton Jones, and many others.
Edinburgh's best comedy venue, within easy walking distance from Waverley Station, the Edinburgh bus station and the city centre. Friendly staff, great vibe, cosy and intimate with hilarious acts. A great place to see new and upcoming talent as well as old favourites.

We had such a laugh at this comedy club🤣. The comedians were mix of male, female, Irish, American, Scottish. The venue is really cool, fab artwork on walls, brilliant staff and perfect bar with all you could want. I wanted to give a special shout out to one particular staff member who was so kind and professional - think her name is Shorna? If I’ve got it wrong .. sorry so I put a photo in the review, hope that’s ok! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

We went see Bruce Fummey as part of the fringe there. He was very good, highly recommended. However, the best part was the way in which I was treated, as a disabled person, the staff, could not have been better! They were fantastic! Well done ladies and guys, it was the making of a lovely evening. Appreciated.

Nice intimate venue for stand up comedy. Would recommend getting there 20-30mins early as there was already a queue before opening but we were lucky to get good seats 3rd row back. The quality of the acts can vary, so bit pot luck if you don’t know the acts. Bar reasonable prices and good drinks selection. They have installed some air con which helps. Slightly disappointed with the lack of food on offer. When I bought the tickets it claimed lots of variety, but in the night only the Korean burger or chicken bites with (very over-seasoned) chips.

Adjacent to the church is a renowned graveyard, known as one of the most haunted in Edinburgh. Visitors often join ghost tours to explore this eerie site but can also appreciate its medieval Flodden Wall and pay respects to famous figures like Bobby and his master.
A nice church with a stunning greenery surrounding it. This is a nice piece of architecture and a pleasant spot to visit on a nice day.

Most famous of course for being the burial place of the famous Bobby and his police officer owner. But the Kirk is also beautiful in its own right and well worth a look. Entrance is free but donations are requested. The Kirk has a small museum.

Built on top of the old Franciscan Friary in Post-Reformation Scotland, Greyfriars Kirk is now celebrating its 400th year anniversary. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Greyfriars Kirk was founded in 1620 and is the first church to be built in post-Reformation Edinburgh It’s still an active parish church here in the city and it welcomes tourists who wish to take a look around. The Edinburgh Gin Distillery at The Arches offers guided tours of its boutique production facility, providing visitors with the opportunity to witness gin making and enjoy tastings and demonstrations of copper stills. Situated in the city's west end near Princes Street, this exclusive distillery produces a variety of gins, including navy strength Cannonball Gin and Seaside Gin inspired by east coast beaches. Additionally, they offer flavored liqueurs such as Plum & Vanilla and Apple & Spice blends.
If you want to sip some delicious gin and learn about its unique Scottish history, this is a great experience. Beautiful location, great gift shop with some bottles you can only get at the distillery- I couldn’t resist the Edinburgh fringe festival exclusives! Our tour guide Lucy was kind and knowledgeable! She made everyone feel at ease and her passion for gin was contagious. It really made the tour special. The gin itself was delicious! I was blown away at the wide range of flavor profiles. To give some feedback on the tasting: I preferred the citrus pairings as the sage was a bit strong for me. I know g&t is king, but it also would have been nice to have club soda as a mixer option alongside the tonic water. However I LOVED having the botanicals there to interact with and smell, it really heightened the sensory experience! Overall, this experience and product was a great value for the price. Thank you to the helpful staff, from the cashier desk to the gift shop to the tour. Definitely buy a bottle to take with you home as a souvenir (I’m going to open the lime and ginger one this summer!)

What an experience! We had some time to spare on our Tuesday in Edinburgh, and stumbled upon this place. We are so glad we did because it was excellent! We were greeted as we walked in and were able to see our tour options straight away. We opted for the gin and chocolate pairing and it was the best decision we’ve made here. Holly was our tour guide and she was bubbly, knowledgable and overall fantastic. The tour itself was excellent, learning the history and process of Edinburgh Gin, involving all the senses. We were able to delve into the process of how it is made and understand the flavours they incorporate. We then moved to the star of the show - the tasting and pairing portion! Everything was so well thought out and we were surprised with the pairings and flavours we enjoyed the most. There was a wide variety of flavours, each bringing something unique to the experience. It felt well timed, with Holly guiding us through each step of the way. We were encouraged to try the gin in multiple variations, alongside the chocolate and it truly made for a wonderful experience. We would absolutely recommend this for anyone who is a gin lover, or someone who might want to learn more about it. My husband and I are fans of gin, but have come out with a renewed love for the spirit. An absolute must in Edinburgh, very well worth the money! Thank you for a wonderful experience. I would give 6 stars if I could!

We had a great time on the gin & chocolate tour! My guests from Canada love gin & really enjoyed how interactive the entire experience was. Simran, our guide, obviously loved her job and was brilliant at it! She really made our time extra special. I will definitely be back in future with other guests (probably for the gin & cheese tour!).

Absolutely loved it! My partner is not a fan of gin but he really enjoyed it too. We booked the gin tour but wished we had opted out for one of the longer tours. Our tour guide Finlay was very informative and knew his stuff, he made the tour fun and we learnt a lot about the gin history and making process. Finlay was able to answer all of our questions and we never felt rushed. The premises is bright, colourful and very new looking. There is also an option to grab a drink at the bar at the end of the tour and I recommend one of the yummy cocktails. Word of caution, eat before you go as they are not mean with the tasting experience and my partner and I did leave with a little glow! Not only is this experience amazing, its reasonably priced and you also receive a tour discount for items purchased in the shop. Definitely 5 stars from us! All the staff were friendly but a huge shout out to Finlay who we felt made the experience! Thank you Finlay!

It’s no secret that Mr Smartie and I are big fans of Edinburgh Gin. So not a huge surprise that we went on the Classic Tour & Gin Tasting at their super-smart distillery in the centre of Edinburgh. Our tour guide welcomed us to the tour with a gin and tonic. As we enjoyed this, we watched a great audio-visual presentation that provided a background to gin, tonic, and the history of Edinburgh Gin. From there we moved to an area of the distillery where we explored the ingredients that go into London Gin, flavoured gins, and gin liqueurs. This was followed by an overview of the stills and distillation process. Our tour concluded in a private tasting room, where we sampled several gins created by Edinburgh Gin. Being a small group – eleven people in total – this part of the tour led to a lot of chat and laughter between us, as we discussed flavours and preferences etc. After the tour was over, Mr Smartie and I decided to try a little more gin at the distillery’s beautiful bar, followed by a visit to their shop before leaving. It was a great tour and a brilliant afternoon. Thanks to Edinburgh Gin and their staff for making it so memorable. We’d highly recommend this tour and a visit to the distillery to residents of, and visitors to, Scotland’s capital.

Had a really wonderful experience here today and just had to leave a review! Had Blair as our guide and he was brilliant. He was so informative, friendly and approachable - no question was a stupid one. He was a lot of fun and so was Chloe in the shop. The two are a real credit to the experience and made our day! We were really impressed with the amount of gin you got to taste (been on some tours where you don’t get any until the end and it’s usually an additional charge) and just how different each one tasted. The information on how to bring out the different flavours with garnishes or tonics was really interesting and something a casual gin drinker would never have known. The shop at the end is lethal - we could have quite easily bought one of everything!! The discount with the tour ticket is invaluable. Would 100% recommend this to anyone visiting Edinburgh

We really enjoyed the Edinburgh Gin Distillery tour. Holly was our guide and she was fantastic — funny, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience fun and easy to follow. The behind-the-scenes look at the gin-making process was fascinating, and the tasting at the end was a great way to try a variety of flavors. Definitely worth doing if you’re in Edinburgh!

Visited on Tuesday and booked the £10 afternoon tea deal , was really looking forward to this and it wasn’t a great experience. We were not expecting fancy for £10 but we love Brewhemia so wanted to try. It was a Tuesday afternoon so quiet but staff weren’t overly chatty. The afternoon tea. I don’t even think it’s worth £10pp and I would have been livid if I had paid full price. The selection was good but the quality was not. Sandwiches , quiche and sausage roll. Small but tasty. The scones were inedible the cheese scone was bland and the fruit scone was as hard as a rock. Scones arent meant to crunch it was more like an overdone rock cake . The cakes were 3 small squares of lemon , marble and chocolate. They were beyond dry and a little stale tasting. We left very disappointed and would not recommend this experience. I would have mentioned it to the staff but the girl who took our payment was very disinterested and didn’t even ask how it was so we paid and left.

We had a fantastic night watching Moulin Rouge at the Playhouse in Edinburgh. From start to finish, the production was top class — the lighting, costumes, singing, and dancing were all absolutely spectacular. The energy on stage was infectious, and the attention to detail in every scene was truly impressive. It’s clear a lot of passion and talent went into this show. The Edinburgh Playhouse continues to be my favourite venue. The atmosphere is always welcoming, and it’s the perfect setting for a night out at the theatre. I would definitely go back — Moulin Rouge was a dazzling experience I won’t forget!

Moulin Rouge was a 10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!! Absolutely amazing performance!!!! However, the theatre itself i can only give 3 stars as the seats were so uncomfortable 😭 just be warned they are small and cramped, we got more seat room on our small propeller plane coming from Exeter then we did here ! I dont know if you can bring your own cushion, but they are super uncomfortable. I would recommend booking as well seats near an aisle as if you're in the middle. Be prepared to be there forever unless you want to get everyone up to get up ! You can order from your phone drinks and snacks to your chair 💺 which is a bonus, but forget it if you're in a middle seat as it will never get to you with how cramped it is !

A great venue but seating is quite tight for long legs. Staff were super welcoming, helpful and friendly. Joseph with Donny Osmond was the performance we saw. What a spectacular event, although it diverted from the traditional script to allow Donny to show his stage skills and provide numerous comic quips. I love live theatre and The Playhouse lives up to all expectations.

A beautiful, well maintained old theatre. From walking through the door to leaving the staff were faultless in their organisation and customer care. We travelled from Newcastle for Moulin Rouge, which made for a special occasion, and nothing disappointed. Excellent transport links too with a tram stop just over the road.

My least favourite theatre anywhere I think. It starts with people being forced to pour away liquids into a bucket - including water on the hottest day of the year. The reason given was garbled but it is basically to stop alcohol being brought in I guess. Given that there a bars inside I am not sure how this works. The seating in the stalls isn't great especially at the back where it is difficult to see /hear the show. And the final whinges: there are far too few toilets especially for the women and £10 for a glass (well, in a cheap plastic cup). Overall it is a pretty tacky venue. Urgh

It offers a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of its former residents through Scottish artworks, period furniture, and interactive exhibits. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the house with dress-up options for children and informative displays about life in the 1700s.
This was one of the most fascinating museums I’ve ever been to. I saw something similar in Switzerland, where my daughter lives, but this one truly exceeded all expectations. Make sure to watch the film on the third floor — it was shot using the museum’s own exhibits and really takes you back in time. I recommend starting with it, but even if you see it later, it’s still a great experience. The biggest highlight is the staff. They don’t just share facts — they make history come alive. You can tell they really know and care, and it makes the visit even more special. Honestly, it’s the best museum I’ve visited. Even my husband listened with real interest when I told him about it — that’s a first! I didn’t have much money at the time, but I still highly recommend going. Thank you so much for what you do.

Great place, as National Trust members I'm not sure why we've not been before. Lots to see and we'll set out, interesting temporary exhibition too, the nursery is opening later in the year so we'll be back. Guides very knowledgeable and friendly

Visiting the Georgian House was such a lovely experience. Everything was beautifully restored, and it really felt like stepping back into the 18th century. Each room was set up with so much care. I especially loved the kitchen — it felt so real, like someone could still be cooking there! The whole visit was super enjoyable. The staff and volunteers were really friendly and knew so much, and their stories made everything even more interesting. Overall, it was a great experience and I’d totally recommend it to anyone who likes history or old buildings

Such an amazing place. Accidentally ended up here while being on my way to somewhere else but no regret at all. A big shout out especially to the volunteer guides. The way they tell stories about each room full of passion was really lovely. I was impressed how passionate each one speaks about each room. Also the lady at the cashier was super super friendly. The place it selves is also magnificent. Definitely an hidden gem in Edi. Somehow don’t understand how this is not yet in the top 10 on TripAdvisor, however the benefit is that it’s not overwhelmed with massa tourism which keeps the place in a lovely state. No regret at all and recommend it to everyone.

Amazing history brought to life by expert guides and a very well made short film that you should watch before starting your tour. A truly fascinating look at how Georgian Edinburgh's society (both rich and poor) worked and played within this great house. Travel back in time and experience a little slice of 18th century Scotland.

We had a really interesting couple of hours looking round this amazing home with everything in it like time has stood still. Everything was original, like going back in time There is also a good video talking about the Georgian House There is also a nice gift shop to buy something as a memory of your visit.

Nestled beside a peaceful pond, Dr Neil's Garden is a hidden gem offering winding paths and vibrant blooming plants. Tucked away near Arthur's Seat, this tranquil botanical garden provides a secluded escape with benches and historical landmarks like the old stone tower. Situated next to Duddingston Loch, it's an ideal spot for quiet contemplation, plant exploration, and enjoying the Scottish scenery by the glistening water.
Hidden gem in Edinburgh behind Duddingston Kirk. The entrance is accessible from the church car park. Offers beautiful views of Duddingston Loch and secluded benches for relaxation. Entry is free, but you can choose to donate (charity-run). Key features include a fascinating Physic Garden and Thomson’s Tower, a small museum dedicated to curling history. Some paths are steep. Accessible routes are available. Dogs (except assistance dogs) are not permitted.

Lovely tranquil place to while away an hour. Some of the reviews here giving it one star, I mean Jesus, have a word with yourselves. It's free, and it's beautiful. My only negative is that it is quite hard to get to on public transport. The number 12 bus is your best bet, but it takes a fair old time from town. I'd also recommend putting some good signage up on the entrance to the street itself, as it's not totally obvious where it is - and this is a local talking here. But all in all, a great little place and great cafe.

A beautiful peaceful oasis of tranquility in Edinburgh. Sells herbs for the garden. Faces on to Duddingston loch. Come here to sit in peace, reflect and find some rest. Difficult to find as maps didn’t take me there. I had to ask someone. There is balck gates on the road which looks like it’s taking you into the manse. A little confusing as I didn’t see a sign outside for it. Well worth the hunt to find it. Free

Lovely place to chill out enjoy beautiful surroundings and colourful gardens. You can have a walk, read a book enjoy a light lunch, take a seat view the water or Arthur's seat. Then go next door to Jock Tamsins garden as this has lovely flowers, fruit trees, views just as delightful . All free except lunch obviously.

If you like peaceful and quiet places, you might have just come across it. Beautiful little hiden gem garden. I used to volunteer in this garden many years ago and it's been taking a shape year by year. Pleasure to walk this land again 🙏

Lovely wee garden , with a breathtaking view of the lake. The tea room was shut, when I was there and only disabled toilet was open , thankfully , as I had walked from murrayfield. But there were plenty of seats around the garden to relax and just let nature engulf you .. If walking Go straight down princess street to Arthur's seat , turn right and keep walking around Arthur's seat and look for the secret railway lane . 20 Min walk along there , then turn left . You'll find the garden after another 15 Min walk
R. S — Google review
This garden was so beautiful and peaceful. There are lots of benches, so you can just sit and admire the view. To access the garden, you need to go to No. 5 Old Church Lane. You go through a black gate, turn right, and walk towards the blue building. The gateway to Dr Neil's Garden is on the left. There is another entrance shown by following a path along the loch, but this does not actually provide access to the garden. You can also enter via the Garden Tearoom if it is open in the grounds of the kirk. The garden is free to enter, though you can make a three pound donation to help with the upkeep. There was a small shop selling plants. If you use a wheelchair or have other mobility issues, there is a main path that provides some access. The rest has steep slopes, steps, paths that can become slippery in the rain and are narrow. There is a disability toilet near the garden tearoom. Only accessibility dogs are allowed.

Stramash is a bi-level venue housed in a restored church, offering live music and sports events. With a capacity of 900 people, it hosts various music genres every night until 3 am, attracting both locals and tourists. Additionally, traditional Scottish ceilidh dancing is available for free admission on Wednesdays from 10 pm to 12 am. The venue provides an energetic atmosphere for mingling and enjoying outstanding performances by multiple bands.
The best pub ever. The bands were amazing, the environment is so cozy, friendly and full of nice people. If you are in Edinburgh don’t hesitate to go there. Especially if you like rock music as me. Good to mention that the entrance is free. Just take a good pint and enjoy! 😊

One of my favorite places in Edinburgh. Great live music, indie rock, Scottish ceilidh and dancing. The bouncers are always super friendly, and the beers are great.

Stramash is an amazing venue! The atmosphere is lively and full of energy, with great music and a brilliant vibe that makes it such a fun night out. The space itself is fantastic, the only thing I didn’t like is the staff at the bar, they are not welcoming and seemed irritated and annoyed. Other than that definitely one of the best places in Edinburgh for live music and a great time. Highly recommended!
Toosha A — Google review
You know it's impossible to rate a place higher than 5 stars, right? But if I could, I would. Or, rather, I could leave a one-word review: Go. Just go to Stramash, will ya! In our first pitstop during a two-night weekend in Edinburgh, we spotted a poster advertising a venue with live bands EVERY NIGHT of the week until 3am. Ha! Took a photo of the poster to remind us. And not half an hour later, a barman at another pub, when asked for Edinburgh recommendations, didn't falter: just go to Stramash, will ya, you won't be disappointed. Several hours later, we did. And we weren't disappointed. That first (Saturday) night we ended up staying for a few hours, and saw two of the bands. You know, we came back for more the second night, and saw two more. We would have come back again. And again. But, alas, we had a flight to catch. The Saturday was busy. Crowded. But so much fun. People were really enjoying themselves. The staff coped well (they've got two bars downstairs), and prices were very decent indeed. Not the biggest selection of drinks, perhaps, and later on in the evening they -understandably- are served in plastics. The wine might have seen better days, or not seen any days, but perhaps it's not a place for you if you only drink wine. Which we didn't. Upstairs (also with a bar, but opened later, on the Sunday) is quieter, and more seating, and a better view of the stage and 'dance floor'. Sunday was quieter, all in all, but got busier. Perhaps it also depends on the bands that are on. The ones we saw over our two-night visit were rather excellent! We also spoke to people, visitors and locals alike, and most of the clientele were just there to have fun! Floors are sticky, but toilets clean enough. Bouncers are a-plenty but are mostly in the way when popping out for a smoke. You may have to queue later on in the evening, but it's worth it. But entry was free, which was a massive bonus! This is, hands down, one of the best places in Edinburgh. And, just go to Stramash, will ya!
JP — Google review
Visiting Edinburgh for the first time in many years, we had the good fortunate to be told about this place. Fair to say, had we not been told, we probably would have walked right past the front of it. But step inside and music fans are in for a real treat! The quality of musicians, bands and duos that we saw was superb! Admittedly, not everyone was to my liking but you still had to admire the talent of the performers. Free entry to see live music of that standard is amazing. We enjoyed it so much we returned on our second night. Hope to visit again on our next trip which we'll try not to leave as long.

A unique pub set inside a former church ⛪, offering live music several nights a week 🎸. Spacious and lively, with a great selection of beers 🍻. A must-visit if you’re in this part of Edinburgh — perfect for enjoying local vibes and good tunes. 🎶
El H — Google review
The bouncers on the door are racist! My friend who was perfectly fine was denied entry for no reason other then what could be the colour of their skin! They tried to say it was for being too intoxicated yet he had only had a couple of drinks, meanwhile another one of my friend was outright battered yet they let him in, they had clearly only picked him out for nothing other then his colour, they then was being extremely aggressive and threatening to get us banned from every bar in Edinburgh! You need new doorman, disgraceful.

The Edinburgh Chihuahua Cafe is a unique destination in the New Town area of Edinburgh, offering a delightful experience for dog lovers and families. Visitors can enjoy cakes while being surrounded by adorable chihuahuas, making it an ideal spot for both kids and adults. The cafe provides an opportunity to interact with these cute dogs, cuddle them, and learn about their individual personalities from the friendly hosts.
One of the most absolute highlights of my trip, 50 minutes was not enough! 🤭 I booked the "3:30pm Pack and Howl" slot and it did not disappoint. Nell was an amazing host, friendly yet professional. This business operates with the best interest of the pups first and foremost, and the pups were just beautiful little angels. The pups however, are retiring in August 2025 so I highly recommending booking your reservation now!

Such a tremendous little place, the staff are so kind and welcoming. I love just how much love and care you can see that they all have for the other staff aka the little chihuahuas 🥰. Honestly this is a great experience and I made some lovely new friends through visiting here. My wife and I have 2 chihuahuas of our own and this was just a great day. My latte was awesome and the cake I got was sooo delicious. It’s a must visit for any animal lovers.

Took my partner here whilst we were on holiday in Scotland....I've always wanted a chihuahua, but he's never been a big fan of them. This cafe very quickly changed his mind!! It definitely worked in my favour that the dogs love men🤣 gorgeous little doggies 🫶🏻 and lovely staff

We had an absolutely amazing time at the cafe! We had such a blast at our first session that we requested to stay on for 1 more session and thankfully they had space. It was really great to see such a lovely environment set up in which everyone could enjoy themselves, from the humans present being able to enjoy the adorableness of the dogs to the doggies playing and relaxing when they felt like it. The little ladies were so adorable and have such different personalities, it was a joy to be around them! The staff were very helpful and enthusiastic, being happy to chat and create a very relaxed atmosphere. Also they made sure that everyone got equal doggie coverage and no group was lacking a doggie at any time. The drinks and cakes were really good, alongside the super cute merchandise. Would definitely be at the top of my recommendations if you are in Edinburgh!
Mara B — Google review
Overall I had a positive experience! The chihuahuas are very cute, and the staff was mainly friendly. We did try to engage in conversation about our chihuahua at home, but they didn’t really care. Like other reviewers shared, you are not allowed to get up during the session. If you have to use the restroom, they make all the dogs leave the room so whoever needs to go can get up. The food/drink is a bit overpriced but it was good. I wish it was more interactive as other reviewers mentioned. Most of the session focused on sitting still and waiting for a chihuahua to come to you or a staff member place them on your lap. The furniture and blankets seemed quite worn, but did its job. You can tell the chihuahuas are very well taken care of and, like most chihuahuas, just want to be in a warm lap and cuddle. If you’re fine with these callouts, I think you will have a great time.
Melanie B — Google review
I would have been happy just hanging out with chihuahuas for an hour, but the hosts went above and beyond. Everything was very organized, and we had lots of puppy time. First, she went over some safety topics, and then we were seated together in one area of the cafe. They gave each of us a cozy fleece blanket to put in our laps, and then each of the dogs paraded out one by one and was introduced. We had some cuddles, and then she gathered them for a group howl. Each of the groups at the cafe got a photo with all 7 dogs, and then we had individual dog cuddles. The host was very good about shuffling the dogs around so we could meet and spend time with each of them. The dogs were so sweet and playful. We had such a lovely time with them.

Wow! What an amazing experience! The chihuahuas were outstandingly sweet and affectionate and the staff were really engaging and informative throughout and it was clear to see that they love their jobs. I wish I could rate this higher than five stars, myself and my wife came out of this experience so refreshed and chilled it was incredible! Thank you

It was absolutely an amazing experience, I am really glad that we wrapped up our trip to Edinburgh with this wonderful 50 minutes. The dogs were very well trained and calm, they came on our lamps and slept straight away. The coffee was very Christmasie and delicious. Nell, Hannah and Tanya were super friendly and sweet, explained everything from the start and very approachable throughout our visit. I took a few photos with the dogs at the end which I will be using in every presentation at my work lol. Definitely recommend this place.

The Water of Leith Walkway is a picturesque route that meanders through the heart of Edinburgh, starting from the charming Dean Village. This historic area, once an independent village known for its grain mills, offers a serene escape into nature. The walkway has recently seen enhancements thanks to local charities and provides a lush green space perfect for leisurely strolls or invigorating runs.
Really nice. We decided to walk back from the yacht to Edinburgh. You can walk via this walk up to Dean Village. It only is around 2 and abit miles.

This is the start (or end?) Of the river of Leith that makes its way through all of Edinburgh. It's a lovely green space with many new upgrades made recently thanks to the water of Leith charity. The walk itself can take multiple hours but even just a small stroll is very relaxing. It also crosses with tonnes of other pathes such as the Hawthorne path and roseburn path.

When you do the whole walk it takes several hours from A to B but it is worth it. It takes you through Edinburgh, village of Dean, Stockbridge and other places. More than enough places to enjoy a break with coffee, tea or food.

Live music venue
Sneaky Pete's is a vibrant and compact late-night venue that offers eclectic live music, new band nights, and an energetic dance club atmosphere. Despite its small size, it has gained recognition as one of the best live music venues in the UK. The intimate setting can accommodate about 100 people, making it a preferred spot for those who enjoy more personal and engaging performances.
I saw a poster in a shop in Leith advertising that Eve Simpson would be appearing here. I'd never been to an intimate gig before and something told me this was the one to see. I booked a ticket online and went to the venue on Friday 18 October 2024. There were two supporting artists, Mally Smith and Sarah Owens. Both outstanding and then Eve came on and it was the icing on the cake. They have friendly staff, great sound in the venue, great lighting and you could get drinks at the bar. The place was packed, but you were able to move around and the atmosphere was electric. It's a place I will definitely return to (never having been there before) for any future acts that catch my eye. Outstanding!.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society is a bustling store offering official merchandise and souvenirs such as T-shirts and posters. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1864, it was once the city's Registry Office and is now part of a cluster of buildings that includes the Central Library and various Fringe venues. This summer, it will reopen as the Virgin Hotel, Europe's first of its kind, featuring original architectural elements alongside modern amenities like multiple bars and live music.
For three weeks in August, Edinburgh welcomes an explosion of creative energy from around the globe. Artists and performers take to hundreds of stages all over the city, presenting shows for every taste. Find out how to make the most of the Fringe. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (also referred to as the Edinburgh Fringe, the Fringe or the Edinburgh Fringe Festival) is the world's largest performance arts festival, which in 2024 spanned 25 days, sold more than 2.6 million tickets and featured more than 51,446 scheduled performances of 3,746 different shows across 262 venues from 60 different countries. Of those shows, the largest section was comedy, representing almost 40% of shows, followed by theatre, which was 26.6% of shows. Established in 1947 as an unofficial offshoot to (and on the "fringe" of) the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place in Edinburgh every August.[3] The combination of Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Edinburgh International Festival has become a world-leading celebration of arts and culture, surpassed only by the Olympics and the World Cup in terms of global ticketed events. It is an open-access (or "unjuried") performing arts festival, meaning that there is no selection committee, and anyone may participate, with any type of performance. The official Fringe Programme categorises shows into sections for theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions, and events. Comedy is the largest section, making up over one-third of the programme, and the one that in modern times has the highest public profile, due in part to the Edinburgh Comedy Awards. The Festival is supported by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets to all events from a central physical box office and website, and offers year-round advice and support to performers. The Society's permanent location is at the Fringe Shop on the Royal Mile, and in August they also manage Fringe Central, a separate collection of spaces dedicated to providing support for Fringe participants during their time at the festival. The Fringe board of directors is drawn from members of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, many of whom are Fringe participants themselves – performers or venue operators. Elections are held once a year, in August, and board members serve a term of four years. The Board appoints the Fringe Society's Chief Executive (formerly known as the Fringe Administrator or Director). The Chief Executive operates under the chair. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose show Fleabag was performed at the Fringe in 2013 before it was adapted for television, was named the first-ever President of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society in 2021. The planned 2020 Fringe Festival was suspended along with all of the city's other major summer festivals. This came as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak in the early months of the year, with concerns of spreading the virus any further. The 2021 festival took place during 6–30 August 2021, though it was much reduced in size, with 528 shows in person and 414 online. The 2022 festival took place from 5–29 August 2022 and marked a return to pre-pandemic levels, with 3,334 shows. Fifty were livestreamed, by NextUp Comedy, for the first time ever since the founding of The Fringe, in an effort to stay true to The Fringe Society's 2022 vision of equality and inclusiveness. The 2025 festival is scheduled from August 1 to 25.
En L — Google review
The Fringe is unlike anything else — an entire city transformed into a stage, with every corner offering something surprising, moving, or hilarious. Wandering down the Royal Mile, you feel the buzz of possibility, and the sheer variety of shows makes it impossible to see everything. Two standouts for me was Daisy Doris May’s Big Night Out — sharp, funny, and full of joy - and Damaged Goods Cabaret show which was a celebration of empowerment, resistance, and sheer talent. It captured the very heart of what makes the Fringe so special: unexpected brilliance in an intimate setting. Practical note: it can be overwhelming at first (so many flyers, so many choices), but that’s part of the charm. Download the app, leave space for spontaneity, and let the energy of the city carry you. If you’re in Edinburgh in August, even one night at the Fringe is worth it. It’s a festival that leaves you buzzing long after the show lights dim.
