I always look for sugar free cakes in coffee shops, and I have never seen so much variety of sugar free cakes in a coffee shop. I ordered the apple pie and it was amazing. 🎈 Its also a vegan place so all milks were plant based and it was natural made by owner! It was one of the best cappuccinos I have had!

Location: Madame Bakster is located in a lively area. It’s well designed and furnished... really hip. A lot of light wood (tables, bar, shelves, chairs, ... ), white tiles and walls, many nice objects on the shelves. The yellow lights is delighting and makes the bar cozier. Food and drink: all the food is homemade, vegetarian (probably vegan, not sure) and really tasty! The beverages are also really good - 2 vegetable milks available: almond and hazelnut. Coffees are being served with a slice sweet popcorns, which makes the break even tastier :) the coffee tastes really nice (I am Italian, so it’s really important for me :p ). Prices a bit higher compared to the average costs... Service: fast, efficient, polite!

I’ve never had as delicious and healthy of a toast for breakfast. Moreover, the scrumptious hot chocolate with those caramelised popcorn on the side were a great start to my day as I went about exploring Ghent!

Friendly and accommodating, which was much needed when we arrived in a very icy / windy day in Ghent. They allowed our dog inside and even brought a water bowl for him. We ordered biscuits, coffee and scones - which were so yummy. Will definitely stop by again when visiting Ghent.

Local bread store with world class quality, MUST try

Such a lovely bakery! It sells a variety of sweet bakes and bread. My friend and I tried the pecan tart and a custard tart (I’m not sure what it’s called). The old lady running the bakery was very sweet as well!

The bakery is said to be the oldest in Ghent and when stepping in, it does have the historic, solid look and feel. There’s only a small space for a single line queue so it might be best to peer through the windows, see what to purchase and then go in if there is a line up. The lady at the cash was very patient when we asked a couple of questions (no one behind us). I had the nuts (pecan) tart which was very good. The crust was crumbly and so good. The custard tart is also another popular choice.

Best bakery in Ghent. I came across it after eating and desiring something sweet. My eyes met a chocolate muffin and I knew that it was the place to buy it. The owner guided me through the flavors but chose the one made entirely of dark chocolate (chocolate bits on top and a heart of chocolate). Best muffin I've ever had. On top of that I bought two amazing small breads which the owner helped me pick based on my bread interests. One of one.

I am writing this review to complain about the service I received at the bakery and the shop assistant's attitude which I found to be very rude and even humiliating. I am not commenting on any other aspects, such as the quality or the variety of the products, as it is irrelevant to my case. I visited this famous old bakery in Gent (Groentenmarkt) on 18.02.2024, in the company of a Flemish companion. I asked for a croissant, in English, as I don't speak Dutch, but it was already around 3 p.m. and not surprisingly, there were no (more) croissants. So I decided to get one of the small sesame breads, as I was starving. The shop assistant placed the bread on the counter, without packing it. I asked for a paper bag because I wasn't going to touch the bread with my unwashed hands. The shop assistant exchanged some words with her female friend who was also there, and begrudgingly gave me a napkin. I was not satisfied with the attitude and the service and thought the shop assistant, a middle-aged lady, was impolite but probably was just in a bad mood. When we left the place, my Flemish companion explained what had happened. The shop assistant had been complaining to her friend, in Dutch, that business was not doing well, and when I had asked for a paper bag - which is normal in a bakery shop, I don't consider this as an extravagant 'want' or caprice - she had made a scornful comment to her friend that paper bags cost money and I was asking for too much, so she had decided to give me the said napkin... Why my companion had not spoken to show that he understood the language and put them in their right place, is a different story. For me, I felt really bad about the way a foreign customer like myself was treated in a foreign language. Yes, business may not be going well - but this is not how you make it better...

Best bakery we have been to in Belgium. I still dream about the brood pudding I had here as well as the bread. I don't know exactly which bread I had. I asked for their recommendation and the lady picked a popular one off the shelf for me, it was so good! It was extremely heavy and dense and so delicious, it had dried fruit and seeds in it too. Definitely recommend coming here if you're in the area!

Nice cake shop in the middle of ghent, I found by coincidence. Lovely cakes, super tasty lemonade and great small details they pay for. As it was sunday, I think the ladies were a little bit more busy serving the terrace in the shade than us sitting at the door so after 20 minutes waiting I asked for order and then it was super quick. Will be for sure back once in Ghent, thank you for nice experience! 🤩

This pastry shop is an absolute gem in Ghent. Impeccably curated down to the smallest detail, it evokes that unmistakable French elegance that makes you feel wonderful while enjoying an unforgettable breakfast. The waitress at the entrance took our order right away since we were in a bit of a hurry, which allowed us to savor a dream breakfast in a very short time. We tried a crumble cake with coffee, and they even brought us a complimentary tasting, which was just as delicious. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy more sweet treats in this magical place!

Extremely quirky restaurant but fun place to eat with all the eclectic memorabilia. We sat on the canal patio area for breakfast, which was fab. We had a couple of shared platters with plenty of refills they are good value for money. Staff were top notch!!

We had a fabulous time at Maison Elsa in Ghent. I had discovered it on a previous trip to Belgium and promised myself I’d return with my wife after such a memorable first visit. Our return did not disappoint. Dinner was outstanding—the food was exquisite, and the service was exceptional. Freddy, the owner, welcomed us with joy and treated us like old friends. When we asked if there was an English menu, he sat down at our table and explained why he prefers not to offer different menus for different languages. Then, with humor, charm, and great care, he walked us through the entire menu himself—as if he were presenting his life’s work. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasted even better than it looked. As we were getting ready to leave, Freddy offered us a parting shot of Elixir de Bruges, complete with a story about its cultural meaning. My wife and I left feeling full, happy, and already planning our next visit to Belgium—and to Maison Elsa.

Amazing restaurant with a great atmosphere and beautiful river views. The food is delicious with a good selection of wines including a decent sherry. The owner Freddie and his nephew are very friendly and the service was just perfect with perfect timing between courses and after to enjoy the ambience and stunning views. We are looking forward to returning to our favourite city Ghent next year and a visit to Maison Elza will be the highlight!

I stopped by for a coffee, just per chance. I ended up having some cake as well! Very good place, staff is great. Really wothwhile for a short detour from the city center. It's a good five minutes from the the big sites like the castle and the historical city center. Can get a bit crowded for some, but I found it very cosy.

You can find this comfortable cafe in just 5 min by walk from the touristic attractions of Ghent. The hot chocolate here was amazing (with whipped cream recommended;) ). The staff was really kind and friendly. Good for friends or solo (yes they have wifi and outlets...)

We visited Simon Says for a brunch and we liked it so much that we went again the next day. Everything we tried was top quality and taste. They use organic and local products which is very important. The service was excellent and cool just like the ambience despite full occupancy. It was relatively expensive but worth it. If we visit Ghent again we would definitely go back!

Great place for a short stay with beer, wine or coffee. We had a vegan flat white, cherry beer and a 0% IPA. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The area of the bar is perfectly located in the inner city where it is not too busy. If you need a quiet drink, I highly recommend this place. Definitely worth a visit when strolling around Ghent!

Wonderful terrace located on a beautiful square. Extremely friendly and accommodating, the waitress was extremely helpful with my daughters nut allergy. The coffee was fantastic! We’ll be returning very soon.

Looks very pretty but they didn't have any gluten free things. Said on the menu that they could accommodate you but the staff member said maybe the soup was gluten free. The buffet was really expensive on the weekends, maybe worth it on a weekday.

Slow service. Bad luck: waitress forgot our order. Beer was tasty, though. Lesson learnt: If you are very thirsty on a hot day, consider visiting the toilet and drink some tap water first...

Very bad service. Drink served 25min after ordering. Interrupted every 5 minutes by waiters asking if we ordered drinks they didn't know in which table to serve. Expensive for what it is.

The food was ok. I ordered a vegan burger. It was trying to be like a meat burger with texture and smoked flavor. Didn't care for it much. Mint tea was nice. Mildly sliced cashews were nice. Don't remember eating a better brownie elsewhere. It had orange zest, tasted amazing. Cool location as well. I saw a water bowl for dogs, seems dog friendly place.

I went there close to closing time so not much options for take away. Had a lovely focaccia, and a average cookie - it was good but not what I expected of a cookie. Lots of vegan options along with everything gluten free.

The bread form this bakery so different from other bakeries. The dough is so nice and soft the taste is good and the different kind of breads and quite expensive. I recommend this place for anyone who would like to try to taste something different from normal.

We came on Sunday at noon for their buffet. You have two time slots for the buffet the first from 9h15 am till 11h45 am and the second from 12 till 2h30pm. The buffet costs around 40 euros (Septembre 2024). The place is cozy and tidy. The food is good, there's a satisfactory variety offered in the buffet. However, the service is subpar, the employees are overwhlemed. Perhaps the place is understaffed on Sundays. No matter how much the idea of a 'posh' buffet in Gent is appealing, I found the whole experience to be a little bit underwhelming. It's a nice discovery in Gent in case you're a long term resident there, but not a must-try for tourists.

I like the space decoration, staffs were nice and we had a good view to the garden from our table. The food, however, was nothing too significant.

During our day-trip to Ghent, I booked a lunch reservation at Alice, on Rick Steves' recommendation. It's a very charming little tea house, though the concept and interior are definitely designed with women in mind. I actually think my dad was the only male in the entire restaurant during our meal, which was somewhat amusing. Alice’s lunch menu was great - nice selection of options and reasonable prices. The quiches were the standouts. I found the staff a bit cold, but they were fairly attentive. I enjoyed my meal overall, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone passing through Ghent for just a short period of time.

What a lovely found. We were on the way to other restaurant but ended eating here. Quite lovely inside and food was amazing. We had tuna sandwich, quiche and celery soup. And of course the chocolate milk and lemon meringue pie. lemon meringue was bit too tarty for me 😂 but still very good. Friendly service, fresh food, lovely atmosphere.... made the perfect birthday lunch in Ghent. Small dog in a backpack carrier was with me and he was so welcomed as well ❤️

Alice is the perfect spot, sophisticated, gorgeous environment, great flavors. The MustTry is the High Tea. You won’t regret! It is perfect for a date, celebrations. It has all flavors. Very fair price for the quality, abundance and chic. Reservations are the best way to get a spot because it gets very popular. The pies are exceptional all of them. My favorite, lemon pie. I made Alice my date almost every Saturday. Good advice, high tea is served after 2pm.

We were looking for a coffee room after our lunch. Alice is close to the parking. It is very nice interior and decoration. We just ordered a cup of coffee and I saw there are some nice pie and cakes. I have to say that caramel nut pie is so delicious 😋 Staffs are freindly. Surely would love to go back and try other dishes. 😊

A causey place for breakfast, brunch or simple lunch. The food is delicious and the service is friendly. We tried fried fish and beef stew. The stew was my favourite. The lemon tarte with merengue had perfect sweetness. I would recommend to reserve a table, though we just walked in. Though it is a big place, it gets busy quite quickly.

Unfortunately, the service brings the experience down. It was slow and inattentive, which made what could have been a delightful breakfast feel a bit frustrating. If you’re patient, it’s worth visiting for the food and coffee alone, but don’t expect quick or friendly service.

I loved this place. My oat milk latte was delicious as were their pastries. My scrambled eggs were cooked just the way I like them. We went twice during our stay in Ghent. I would definitely go back the next time we are in town.

Good food at a good price, but the location is in a major need of a renovation

With a great view. I liked the ambiance and it was the only place we found open early in the morning. I was really pleased. It was also warm and the staff was very attentive and friendly.

This place gets top points for me in atmosphere and service. Food is so so, but it is what is expected. The flatbread was ok, a bit pricey because the few slices of ham and cheese cost 6 euros on top of the cost of the flatbread. The lemonade was good, pricey too, wt almost 12 euros for 2 regular sized glasses. The cinnamon roll looked really good but was also so so. The best part was getting to admire the place which is in the old post building, newly renovated Post Plaza which has high ceilings, a lot of light and air. Some of the historic structures are still visible and it’s a perfect place to look at all these details. They did a Wonderful job renovating and designing this space.

Loved loved their pastries! We tried fresh bread in Brussels and few other pastries at London train station. We sat down at their beautiful table and enjoyed with coffee. Magnifique praline was to die for. Will try other flavors next time in Europe. Ghent location was most special and memorable.

A wonderful café with unique pastries called Merveilleux. I tried several flavors here and they were all light, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The presentation is beautiful and it’s hard not to want to try them all. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. Accessible! I especially recommend the white chocolate one – it’s my favorite! If you’re in town, this place is definitely worth a visit.

I stumbled upon this lovely little store during a morning walk and couldn’t resist stopping in for coffee and something sweet to start the day. My friends and I sat by the river enjoying the view, it was the perfect peaceful moment. The smell of fresh pastries was impossible to ignore! I tried the meringue and the magnifique praline, both were absolutely delicious. A charming spot for a slow morning treat.

Dessert was not bad. Air conditioner was not working when it was hot outside. I am not sure how their pastries are safe :) Waited for staff a little bit longer than expected, good to mention that there was not many people in the store on that moment.

The “famous mini cake” is just cream sprinkled with nuts. Overhyped. The only good thing about the place is the vibe.

Peaberry is a great place to grab coffee and a quick bite to eat. Their cheesy hummus croissant is sooooo good. Their hot coffee and matcha lattes are both really good and creamy. Their pastries are solid. Prices are super reasonable, staff is friendly, and their cafe is comfy.

Came after nice reviews for breakfast. Had sandwich of the day and soft boiled eggs with bread and cheese. The cheese was served mouldy. When I went to the counter and she gave me another piece that was mouldy again. I went and said this is not nice and the waiter said I should be cutting off the “edges” and eat the cheese. I know when you can cut the edges and eat. The mould in this cheese was just all over. Check the photos and decide for yourself. I don’t recommend this place at all.

It was GREAT! I had breakfast with my family and we all loved it. My daughter had the soft boiled eggs and it was perfection. We loved the cheese and bread, I don't have a picture because I was to busy enjoying everything. I had the granola AMAZING! And we had the cinnamon bun, they warm them and we loved it. We could go back all day, every day. The staff gave us advice for coffee and tea, good choices and good advice from the staff. You could pick as many cookies as you wanted: on the shelf with water (as much as you want) and sugars (you could eat as much as you want, but I would advice you to choose the cakes and desserts instead). It was lovely to be in the Peaberry in Gent (also good location!)

I love walking to local coffee shops. It's the experience and supporting the local ma and pa coffee shops. I enjoyed the cute Peaberry coffee shop! The lady working was so nice. I had a Latte, and bought a few bags of beans to take home. The coffee was delicious. I highly recommend stopping at the Peaberry for your morning or afternoon coffee!!

Nice café… food okay but nothing extraordinary or highly to recommend in Ghent…

I really don’t know what was wrong that day, but i got a matcha latte that had almost no matcha in it, it was almost only milk. I had looked at photos of the matcha lattes and they looked very good, that’s why I decided to get one, but it was the worst matcha latte I’ve had.

Stopped in here briefly on a very hot day and ordered a couple of iced lattes - prices of the drinks was very reasonable compared to other places we've seen throughout Belgium. Staff were very polite and friendly. Coffee was delicious!

Stopped by here since it was drizzling and we wanted to grab some coffee on our walk to the trams to the train station. This place was convenient located on our way there and glad we found it. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable, there was choice between 2 beans and we was able to explain and recommend it well. One of the best coffees I’ve had in a while! Both americano and flat white were delicious, we could taste the flavour of the beans so clearly. There are pastries there as well so good for a snack!

It came as a surprise to me that there’s no laptop allowed during the weekend since there’s no sign in the cafe saying so. I was there with my friend for 2 hours, everything went well till he left and I opened my laptop to work. 10 mins later a person to ask me to move because of the mentioned reason. I explained I need to do it shortly and I will leave in half an hour but she was quite pushy. Many others were sitting there with their laptops and books but nothing happened. Anyway I would not open my laptop there if they make the rule obvious for me to know from the beginning. The atmosphere is nice but this experience makes it’s not worth it.

The outside seating area is a HUGE plus, so cute and cozy. The coffee was fine, the cinnamon roll a bit too dry sorry!! Still worthy of 5 stars though as the atmosphere of the place totally makes up for it!! You will see me again (even after this review sorry!). + very sweet barista’s!!

I’ve been there for a quick coffee, and it was a great surprise! The tasty of the coffee is incredible, really good quality of it. We’ve ordered the black coffee and the size was the way that we like (not small) 😅🙌🏻 With the coffee, a piece of delicious and not much sweet cheese cake and a delicious brownie! We do recommend this place.

I ordered scrambled eggs, avocado , etc( see photo). The taste was bland. The worst part is the service. The girl knew I wasn’t a Dutch speaker but she brings me a menu in that language, I had to ask one in English. After another girl served me, the staff completely forgot about me long after I finished eating, I had to go to the counter to pay. No problem doing that, but at least you can say it or ask me if I wanted anything else . The place wasn’t full at all and they weren’t understaffed.

On 01.11.2024 I was waiting for my two orders from Pain & Campagnie, but it was closed ,even though they were offering on the too good to go platform an offer for that day. It was a complete waste of time and money for me. Thanks for the great service. Big disappointment! In Gent centrum.

My favourite bakkery shop in Ghent to find my tiny tartelettes for my sweet tooth. I am in love with this place, they have a lot of variety in food and drinks so I'd suggest to try it all out!

Great breakfast, fresh veggies and a perfect omelette.

Had a horrible experience. We wanted to have brunch before leaving to catch the train, and we ordered drinks and food, and it was quite crowded with their regulars. So we assumed the reason we’re waiting for almost an hour for the food is that they’re too busy with the others, although it’s a small place. (Photos with high ceiling interiors are from d’Hane-Steenhuyse) But no, when we asked why we’re not having our food they said they’re sorry that they forgot to put our order in their system. But we were all the time in their sight, I wonder how the waitress that took the order didn’t bother. That was it, no extra effort, while I would’ve let it go if they had shown a better hospitality in the end.

I have been visiting Belle Histoire for years, ever since I lived in the street as a student in Ghent. It's a small shop with amazingly friendly staff and fantastic food and drinks for a very reasonable price. I still pass by for coffee and fresh homemade pie every chance I get.

Ordered a chai latte and a pumpkin spice latte, both were delicious! For the pumpkin spice latte you add as much sugar as you want, the waitress offered maple syrup as well. The vibe is great, full of students and very peaceful. A great place to get a drink and work quietly or just hang out and try their coffees. Very nice ambiente in the quiet patio. Dogs are allowed here, they even a have a "doggy bar" to serve your dog a fresh bowl of tap water. Good place to work on your laptop or read a book. Wide variety of coffee drinks are offered and vegan snacks can be bought. Cafe is currently quite hidden because of a construction going on in the street.

The indoor seating is cosy yet open, and when the sun came out, we moved to the terrace outside, which was just as pleasant. The owner was incredibly welcoming, making the whole experience even better. The coffee selection is top-notch, with four different V60 hand brews on the menu—Kenya, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Peru. We tried three: the Kenyan, the Colombian, and the Costa Rican. The Kenyan really stood out—bright, flavourful, and so good we ended up buying a bag to take home. The Costa Rican and Colombian were solid, classic Latin American coffees. Overall, a fantastic experience and a must-visit for anyone who loves specialty coffee in Ghent.

We paid 45€ for what was honestly one of the worst brunch experiences we’ve had. The coffee was basic at best and the orange juice tasted old and off. We ordered a mascarpone toast, a cheese sandwich and a focaccia but all three were a letdown. The mascarpone on the toast was clearly expired. It smelled bad, tasted so horrible and had soaked the bread to the point of being inedible. The cheese sandwich was nothing more than a plain, average sandwich (definitely not worth the price they charge). The focaccia was stale and ROCK hard. You could knock it on the table and hear the hard sound it makes. We ended up leaving most of the food untouched because it was just that bad. It’s shocking how overhyped this place is. Absolutely not worth it. Save your money and go somewhere that serves good food.

Best vegan bakery we’ve ever been to. They have a huge variety of pastries and they were all truly amazing. The sweet pastries like the croissants, Tom pouce or the chocolate hazelnut pastries were all so tasty. Out of the 4different vegan worstbroodjes we had the pesto one and the spicy one and they were so insanely good, flavourful the texture was incredible. The personal was also very nice and took their time explaining things to us. The prices are very affordable for the high quality of the products. A most go for everyone visiting Belgium.

I have been wanting to go to this place forever and so happy I did. I will for sure be back. I’m usually not a fan of bread items but this place is an exception; I will without a doubt eat €30 worth of items from this place in one day, it’s that good. Within walking distance from our hotel, so we came here every day for breakfast. It is a popular bakery in the neighbourhood. The long queue says it all. There are only two people taking orders and preparing drinks, so it may appear slow, but it's absolutely worth the wait.

Starting off with food, both pastries we took were super dry and dense so I cannot recommend in terms of flavor, it only looks pretty. Second topic is price. They charge 1.5 euros for ice! You also have to pay extra 1 euro if you dine in - and I wouldn’t say that the atmosphere is worth it. They serve pastries on beautiful wooden boards, but you just seat in the middle of the street, without any coziness or comfort. The tables inside don’t look much more comfortable either, as the space is too tight. Last stop is service. Service started off great—the cashier was friendly and helped me choose a pastry. But then she misheard me and packed it to go instead of for dine-in, which wasn’t a big deal for me plus I didn’t know what was typical for this bakery. I sat down, and when my friend started ordering to eat in, the staff realized the mistake. One of them came out, asked if I was staying, and mentioned there’s an extra charge for dining in. I offered to pay, but she said “I see your boyfriend is ordering inside, we’ll figure something out,” and left right away. Her tone felt passive aggressive and superior throughout the conversation, which made me uncomfortable, though that’s subjective. What wasn’t subjective was the unprofessional handling. She assumed my gay friend was my boyfriend, didn’t explain anything to him (so he was unaware of the situation), and they just whispered in Dutch in front of him. Later they brought my pastry on a wooden board but never explained if I had to pay extra. When I asked, they just said, “Don’t worry, it’s figured out,” and left . We’re still not sure if my friend got charged double because they assumed we were a couple. But we will never know because the bill didn’t have a detailed breakdown of what we were charged for 😆 So the overall impression of the atmosphere is it looks fancy, but ‘fake’ - we didn’t enjoy the food and didn’t feel welcomed. I thought for a second that maybe the reviews are so good because there’s no good competition, but after trying pastries at other places I must say that there’s wayy better alternatives.

We choose this place randomly, based on it's rating and also the reviews. It is based on a neighborhood, full of houses and nature. The location is quite interesting. It is calm and beautiful. There are not much of a parking, maybe for two three cars. We were there with my husband on saturday. The staff were really helpful and kind. We had a Bongo card with us, and they helped us to choose. We had two cupoccino and a chocolate tart and fruits tart. The drinks were big and we enjOyed having them. The tarts were fresh and yummy. We sat on exterior, but there is also chairs and tables inside. Their variety is good and they also offer sandwiches, veggies and non veggie. The prices are fair. I buy the cinnamon roll(ARAD), the grenoblette one, almond croissant (AMANAEL) and a recommendation of the friendly dependent that consist of a bun with raisins( BOLUS). I also buy the applebol that was delicious with a little bit of warm latter. I bought these to travel to spain as a breakfast surprise to my family and I choose these boulangerie because of its history and reputation. I definetly would repeat.

Just simply the best bakery in town. They have been around forever and I have the impression that this is one of the rare places where everyone is still proud of their products. The staff is always friendly and kind but what's more important: their baked goods are amazing. No cuts were made, no cheap substitute no cheap chocolate or fake anything. It's all stellar.

Phenomenal bakery, everything is made fresh and with passion for the craft. This is a traditional bakery I visit multiple times a week and never has one of their products disappointed me. The staff is friendly and welcoming and all the food is packed with flavor and fresh ingredients. Only downside is that the bakery is not open on Sunday and Monday.

Bought some take away quiche here and they were first class. Lots of choices both sweet and savoury. Very reasonably priced and well presented.

The treats here are deliciously sweet, yet perfectly balanced, ensuring they’re not overwhelmingly sugary. The decor was nice and the ladies were so sweet and nice. The packaging is actually fancy. You might wanna try out their chocolate and sweets. We haven’t tried their chocolate yet, but we did sample their macarons. While most were decent, they weren’t particularly memorable—except for the lemon and framboise flavors, which stood out as delicious. They were a bit on the expensive side, in comparison to macrons we tried in France.
