Pub
Restaurant
The Dirty Bottles is a historic taproom and smokehouse located near Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. The pub has been open for over two centuries, with the building dating back to the 1600s. Originally known as Ye Old Cross Inn, it gained its current name due to the famous Curse of the Dirty Bottles. The interior is a blend of period charm and modern comfort, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room was very spacious and very well appointed and immaculately clean. Lovely en suite shower room also. The staff are amazing, especially Ben, lovely lad working the bar. Great range of drinks, beers, ales, lagers wines, spirits etc. Can definitely recommend and would stay again but the only problem is that long stay car parking in Alnwick is difficult. The long stay car parks are a maximum of a 24 hour stay and no return within 4 hours which is a phaff and also spaces are limited so no guarantee of getting a spot.

Had to book table or wait for 45mins, unable to book table so we waited. We were not told by the staff in the restaurant area that there were tables further round past the bar where we could in fact.order food at. We ordered 3 burgers, 1 gluten free 1 veggie and 1 normal. Gluten free was nice however didn't have any tomato or onion like the others did. Veggie one was good and normal one was inedible, it was so tough I couldn't bite through it or cut through it. I had to send it back and wait another 20 mins to eat my burger after everyone else had finished.

Had our wedding party here. Sophie couldn’t have done enough for us! All the guests said the buffet was amazing! Very accommodating! The pub is beautifully decorated. Thank you so much for allowing us to celebrate a day we’ll never forget and for making it such a chilled day!

We have visited Alnwick regularly for a few years now and Dirty Bottles is always our first booking for food. We are both vegan so love their options....the mushroom tart was reslly tasty as was the vegan burger. Nice range of drinks and really reasonable prices.
IAIN H — Google review
Very much the bottom of a mixed bag. Service was very slow. Despite being an incredibly busy Sunday, there was only one member of staff on the bar. Drinks were quite expensive and the food was mediocre at best. The chicken and ham hock pie was quite nice, but their chicken tenders were very greasy and the cheesy garlic bread was simply disappointing.

Our party of four stopped off in Alnwick for lunch on our way for a five day break near Bamborough. We went to the Dirty Bottles pub for Sunday lunch and it was excellent. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was very good .
Graham F — Google review
My wife and I celebrated our marriage with friends and family here. The staff were very helpful in the build up to the event, and were very accommodating. They gave us our own section of the pub for our own festivities, and the bar staff were friendly and easy to deal with. Big appreciation for Sophie who dealt with us the most and was a very friendly, easy person to speak with. We’d definitely come back again.
Brandon S — Google review
Was looking for a place that could accommodate 7 of us and a dog, without hesitation the staff told us to take a seat which was fantastic. The 7 food dishes arrived within 20 minutes, all together and piping hot. Great selection of drinks at reasonable prices and take blue light card for discounts. The staff and service were exceptional. The location in the heart of Alnwick town centre is stunning. If you are ever in the area, give this a go. £55 for 7 dishes that were faultless!

The Plough is a charming accommodation housed in a well-maintained 1896 townhouse, featuring cozy country-style rooms and serving up classic British cuisine. Additionally, the establishment boasts a stylish pub nearby, perfect for evening outings. For those with carnivorous inclinations, the renovated rough-luxe smokehouse known as the Dirty Bottles offers a delectable selection of meats and sides. Nearby attractions include the renowned Barter Books, an expansive literary haven set within an old railway station.
Eight Ladies who Lunch. Our first visit to the Plough in Alnwick. Excellent varied menu. Plus a small lunch with a drink followed by a coffee with a small sweet. Ideal for us older ladies. Fantastic service from all the staff, especially Reece, who made our visit extra special. Not easy keeping eight old ladies happy!! Warning we will be back!!

Review only for the pub (dinner), did not stay. Standard pub fare, the food was pretty good and very reasonably priced. The service and atmosphere I'd say was a little weird, felt a bit ghost town. The staff were nice, but felt like they might all be quite new, they seemed to be a bit unsure of themselves. We waited quite a while to get the bill, despite hardly any other customers, but the rest of the service (ordering, drinks, food) were all done in good time. Definitely recommend the steak and ale pie, it was darn tasty.

It's rare that I leave negative reviews, but having just returned from a family meal I feel compelled to share our experiences. We ordered from the set menu. Our main courses took over 50 minutes to arrive at our table. One of our party ordered steak, cooked medium rare as recommended on the menu. Sadly the steak was well done but we darent send it back for fear or a very long wait for a replacement. The garden peas had that tell tale look of having been left under heat lamps for some time, which might explain the woefully over done steak. The mains took so long to arrive that we had finished our drinks, so ordered more. After almost 30 minutes of staring at our empty mains plates we cancelled the drinks, hopeful that our desserts would arrive and we could end this disappointing meal. Alas, it was another 20 minutes before our desserts arrived. To be fair, my daughter enjoyed her main course and we all enjoyed the puddings, but the experience was disappointing on the whole. I don't think we'll be back.

Gorgeous room, really warm welcome, but it all kind of fell apart when I tried to go downstairs for breakfast. Signs said breakfast from 8am, left my room to find my door alarmed and shut, so used the fire escape to get out of the hotel. Entire place locked up and in darkness, no sign of another person or any breakfast. So I had super noodles in a tea mug for breakfast in my room before a precarious exit down the fire escape with my luggage. Contacted the hotel by phone, no answer, via Facebook, no answer. It was a shame as ideal location for Alnwick Gardens, a 2 minute walk away and a lovely room and friendly welcome from staff member the evening before.

A disappointing evening visit to The Plough, not entirely the junior barman’s fault - but painfully slow to make a cocktail, and a shot, as well as being overwhelmed when refunding an item of food that was sold out. Moreover there was an entire lack of leadership from any bar management which should be addressed. 3 separate customers offered assistance to the poor barman. Overall a nice location with a good selection but it was underwhelming and thankfully I shan’t be coming back, good luck on your visit…

I do not usually post negative comments about a business but after today's experience thought that I had to give a poor rating for today's dining experience at The Plough at Alnwick. We booked a table in advance and turned up a bit early. Had a drink whilst we waited to be seated. Our reservation was for 4.30pm. We were seated and told that kitchen was being set up and that things would be ready in 5 minutes or so (at 4.20pm). We also asked about ordering the food and we're told that a member of staff would let us know when kitchen was open. After 20 minutes we asked at bar if kitchen was open and we're told it would be at 5pm and that someone would let us know when food was being served. At 5.10pm we went once again to the bar and were told that food orders were being taken since 5pm! We placed an order and were surprised that although the venue sold "fish and chips" dog meals, we could not buy one as the server did not know how to put this through the till. We than had to wait almost 40 minutes for the food to be served. This was most surprising as we were the only people eating at this time! I can accept waiting a while for good food to be prepared, however, the quality of the food was very poor for the price we paid and the portions were very small. The food seemed to be similar to that served at a supermarket cafe where frozen foods are heated and served. When paying at the bar a member of staff asked how we enjoyed our visit. In response I asked him if he really wanted to know. He shook his head and said that he only worked at the venue and people should let the manager know. Interesting to note that the manager was not directed to our group ( if the manager was in). I really hope this venue ups their game on customer service and either improve the quality of food on offer or reduce the price.

Family of 6 decided to pop in for a meal and wasn't disappointed from a good selection of drinks to us all enjoying our meals I would definitely return! Big thanks to our servers who were very attentive.

We’re to start!!! Parked in the car park round the back. No clear way to the reception. Staff failed to was an issue with the kitchen and no food that evening. Once shown to our room the staff only told one of the couples the doors to downstairs would be locked at 11pm at night. But the staff regularly closed the door early!! The only way to each floor was by the fire escapes that were permanently left open and unlock. So anyone could walk into the place. Rooms are very basic and need some attention. Very unloved and very much an after thought. We went to book a table for our evening meal we found at the kitchen wasn’t opening till 6.30pm. So booked for 6.30pm but instead the waitress booked us in for 7pm. We ordered our food to be told 10 mins later they couldn’t do once of the starts 2 people had ordered. It take 2hr in a very quiet restaurant to have two course!! Then we weren’t given an option to have any pudding as the staff wanted to close. No apologies are offered of complimenty drinks for the delay in food are with the fact we only got part of the meal. The food was nice.

Adam and Eve, located in Alnwick, is a farm-to-table dining spot named after the original couple. The restaurant offers a Valentine's Day menu featuring dishes like ricotta stuffed figs, truffle risotto, and sirloin steak. For a unique dining experience, visitors can also check out the Treehouse Restaurant set within the world's largest treehouse at Alnwick Garden. This quirky restaurant features a large roaring fire and trees growing through the floors.
This place was recommended to us by a few people on Facebook so decided to give it a go. It was quiet for a Saturday afternoon which suited us fine. The two gentlemen on duty were brilliant- attentive without being overbearing. The menu is small but honestly that worked so well for us- my husband having ADHD can get overwhelmed with choices and FOMO so having a limited selection was perfect. I wasn't hungry enough for a starter, he ordered the pork belly bites and the server asked if we'd like them to come with the main which was really appreciated. Husband went for the flat iron steak and I chose the bone marrow beef burger. The food came quickly and was presented beautifully. The pork belly bites were melt-in-the-mouth delicious, so tender and flavourful. Husband's steak was cooked to chef's recommendation (he likes it blue and this was rare) and was perfectly cooked. The burger was a triumph- the bone marrow giving it a rich, sumptuous flavour; accompanied with strong melted cheddar, tomato, baby gem lettuce and pickles it was stunning. My only wish was that it had fresh onion too but I realise lots don't like onion! I was driving so stuck to Fentimans- husband had a craft beer and a cocktail (a reasonable £9) that looked to be their own creation. Atmosphere was lovely and chilled- early 90s pop playing at a perfect volume (loud enough to hear it, not so loud to be distracting!) They even turned the heater down when we asked as it was blasting on us. Would definitely recommend and revisit!

What a fantastic restaurant. We were looking for a Sunday Roast in Alnwick whilst on holiday and after walking past the evening before and being impressed by the Adam & Eve, we just had to book for Sunday Lunch. From the second we walked in we were welcomed and the fantastic and attentive service continued throughout. The food was simply amazing and the best Sunday Roast we have enjoyed out in a very long time. The starter was delicious, the beef melted in the mouth & the chocolate brownie finished the meal perfectly. I also enjoyed a cocktail to end the meal which was amazing too. We had our 20 month old daughter with us and the child's roast was perfect and loved by her. The Service was fast but not rushed and we never felt under any pressure whilst enjoying a family lunch. We cannot recommend the Adam & Eve highly enough and will definitely be back next time we stay in Alnwick

Our meal here was one of the highlights of a fantastic few days in Northumberland. We visited on a Wednesday evening, and the place was fully booked. The service was spot on - friendly and attentive without being overbearing. My pigeon breast starter was delicious and beautifully presented. My partner had the salmon main, and I had the porchetta. Both dishes were so full of flavour, beautifully cooked (perfect al dente vegetables too), and the portions were generous. I appreciated the option of kombucha on the drinks menu - I'm not able to drink alcohol, and find many soft drinks overly sweet. We spoke to the chef at the end of our meal, and its clear that he puts his heart and soul into what he does. Thanks to all for a wonderful evening, we'll definitely be back.

Visiting Alnwick on a Sunday, naturally I checked out where was the best place for a Roast and this establishment did not disappoint! I did pre-book, which is recommended as it was full and they were down a server or two - no bother, the staff on duty did their best. The food was very good indeed! We were a family of 4 adults, 3 kids, and a baby - all left very happy! Roast beef was perfect, sides too! Top marks! Oh I had the burrata starter, which admittedly said it came with chilli, but was a bit too hot for my liking.

This was a lovely meal out. A buzzy but not too loud place in the centre of Alnwick, Adam and Eve has a carefully curated and delicious menu. We enjoyed oysters and bread, the stuffed porchetta, and classic mussels. Good portions that sadly left us too full for pudding! A great drinks menu with creative cocktails rounded off a lovely evening out. Thanks to the hardworking staff for making it a meal to remember.

Wow what an amazing place! True gem. From start to finish, the food, wine and service was impeccable. Would definitely book ahead for dinner, every table was taken.

We absolutely loved this place! The food was 12/10 (especially the starters: squash and sweet potato soup, and burrata), the ambience and service - top notch! Also, big shoutout to the person who has complied the list of songs playing, they just added to already amazing experience. Highly recommend

I don't have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to extole the virtues of this restaurant. The food was stunning, the staff attentive though not obtrusive and the atmosphere was superb. We normally have dinner at the hotel we always stay in in Alnwick which is why we've never visited before. That's all changed. We will be recommending this place to everyone we know who goes to Alnwick. Having a chat with the chef after the meal showed us exactly what the ethic of the place is, seasonality and locally sourced.

This was my favourite restaurant on my trip to Alnwick. The chef used to work for the Duke in the past and I'm not surprised. The food was cooked fresh right next to where we sat. It was excellent. The lamb and duck dishes were amazing The owners clearly have a passion for what they do and are very friendly and chatty. I'd definitely recommend try Lilburns out at least once on your trip.

Absolutely beautiful lunch today at Lilburns. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble. Every single meal we saw come out of the kitchen was stunning in presentation. Real works of art. The oohs and aahs from other customers echoed our own as our meals were just delicious. All incredibly reasonable in price too. I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's the treat of our yearly holidays to Northumberland. We had the belly pork and muscles in garlic sauce.

What an amazing find! My first visit to Alnwick and Lilburns has made it a treat of a visit. Amazing, friendly service reflective of this beautiful town and steaks cooked to perfection and a dessert to die for! Super value wine list too. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

We both enjoyed our seared tuna. It's pink tender and succulent to perfection. It also came with vegetables and New potatoes, which was a pleasant surprise because we didn't tell that from the menu. Service very friendly. A letter at the entrance showed Prince Philip used to find here. A very interesting place with quality, history and family tradition.

The Market Tavern, Steakhouse and Lodge is a traditional pub located in the town center of Alnwick. It offers simple rooms with free Wi-Fi and a quaint bar and dining area. The restaurant within the establishment, known as The Treehouse Restaurant, provides a unique dining experience set within the world's largest treehouse at Alnwick Garden. The Market Tavern serves a variety of dishes suitable for solo travelers, couples, families, and large groups.
The team at the Market Tavern really made the effort to accommodate our party, which was not easy, and I am so grateful. We were five adults, two children and a dog, and we turned up without a reservation. They were almost fully booked, but they did some careful shuffling of bookings and seatings, and managed to squeeze us in, which felt like a work of magic. Following on from that auspicious start, everything was fantastic. The food was great quality, generous portions and very reasonably priced, the service was friendly and responsive and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommend!

Stopped in at The Market Tavern in Alnwick with my partner and we both went for the fish and chips — honestly, some of the best I’ve ever had. The batter was light and crispy, the fish perfectly cooked, and the portions were really generous. Lovely, cosy atmosphere too with friendly service that made us feel right at home. Couldn’t have asked for a better pub meal!

An excellent experience for Sunday Roast. Our B&B host recommended it and it was very good information. We love a traditional Sunday Roast and this delivered mightily. The signature roast beef, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding were amazing. The local beers and wines selection was excellent. A great dining experience.

Really nice atmosphere and enthusiastic staff. Definitely worth booking as it was quite busy on a Thursday night. Food was lovely with a decent selection of vegetarian options. The onion rings in particular was delicious. Would be nice if the cheeseboard was more local cheeses but it was nice either way.

Lovely spot in the centre of Alnwick — great food and service! We dropped into the Market Tavern for lunch yesterday and today, and we really enjoyed ourselves. The place has a proper welcoming pub feel — warm, relaxed and friendly without being noisy. I had the chicken in the basket main while my partner went for the chili con carne, and both dishes were spot on. The chicken was tender with a crisp skin and nicely seasoned, and the chili had that slow-cooked depth with just enough spice to keep things interesting. Service was quick and cheerful too, and the staff seemed genuinely happy to have you there. Prices were fair for the quality, and portions were generous without going overboard. A great choice if you want proper pub food done well in Alnwick. Would happily come back next time we’re in town.

Stayed overnight and had an evening meal. The rooms are clean and well equipped but dated. The meal was excellent! Great atmosphere, great service (the food was a little slow but they were packed) the prawn starter was out of this world!!! Will definitely visit again, there are so many great things on the menu I want to try!!

We went here because one of our party is vegetarian. The menu selection was very good and varied. However, when the food arrived, the seafood linguine was exceptional, really really tasty! The venison was also excellent. The vegetarian option was also extremely tasty. Brilliant find for excellent food. Thank you to the chef!

Sonnet Restaurant is a new addition to Alnwick's dining scene, offering a 14-course tasting menu that focuses on high-quality ingredients and simplicity. Created by chefs Gary McDermott and Claudia Mazareanu, the restaurant provides a culinary journey throughout the year, with a separate lunch menu available. Guests can expect an extraordinary experience from start to finish, with superb food served in an intimate and easy atmosphere.
We visited Sonnet on a Wednesday night, the service was fantastic and provided some great detail on the dishes and wine paring. The wine was fantastic and enabled us to taste some of the different varieties of grape which I wouldn't normally try. In addition, the food offered a number of interesting twists which were great together and delivered some fantastic flavours. In addition, we got a nice treat to take home which was a great touch. I would definitely recommend a visit to Sonnet for some food which was delivered well and served to a high standard.

Absolutely incredible meal with lots of interesting flavours. My fiancé took me to Sonnet as a birthday treat and it fully delivered on all expectations. All of the staff are friendly and chatty, making the experience even more enjoyable. The food speaks for itself, having been to many tasting experiences I can say this is right at the top of my list. Will definitely be returning for another special occasion.
Natalia R — Google review
Sonnet’s fourteen-course tasting menu was an absolute treat. Each dish was beautifully presented, with bold and interesting flavours that my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed. We ate some of the best food we’ve ever had. The service was impeccable. The staff were attentive and professional, yet warm and engaging. The ambience matched the service — elegant decor, but with a relaxed atmosphere that made the evening feel both special and comfortable. I would highly recommend Sonnet to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.
Joel H — Google review
Wow! The best meal I've ever had and I'm in the fine dining hospitality business. So glad we found out about Sonnet right before our day trip to Alnwick. With 1 seating a night and a small dining room, we were expecting greatness and they delivered. Staff was attentive, helpful, and friendly. It was a tasting menu, so not as filling as other restaurants, but each dish was thoughtful, rich, and delicious. It's hard to choose which dishes were our 3 favorites, but I'd say they would be the pea pannacotta, bbq monkfish, and chocolate with caviar! Can't wait to visit again and tell everyone we know to make a reservation.
Michelle S — Google review
Wow, wow, wow. Gary and the team do the most amazing job of absolutely knocking it out of the park. Had the 14 course menu tonight and absolutely loved every course. They kept on getting better and better. Such a hidden gem in Alnwick. Expertly trained professional chefs present the most amazing food with such a high level of skill that makes you stop in your tracks. Incredible flavours and extremely well put together dishes make this a dining experience not to be missed. Only do sixteen covers per sitting to give the greatest personal experience. Really small team of just four people make it look seamless and well organised. Honestly can’t praise the food enough. Not something you can do every week but for that extra special experience you should push the boat out, sell a kidney, raid the kids piggy bank, pan for gold, or just save up while you wait for a booking. The success of this place means that there’s a waiting list. Should you wait for “Just another restaurant?” Absolutely. It’s definitely worth it because it’s definitely not just another restaurant. This is an experience, and one to be savoured. The skill and presentation of the food shows exactly how much care clearly goes into giving the most incredible experience. Can’t praise it any higher. It’s just something to behold. Well done to all of you. Can’t wait to come back again. Few photos but not too many to spoil the experience.

I visited today (6th September) for the first day of Sonnet's new 8-course lunch menu. As I anticipated from previous visits, the food, service, and ambience were beautiful and I am determined to try their 14-course dinner menu some time soon.

We visited Sonnet tonight to continue our fine dining streak and for my partners Birthday Our experience at Sonnet was absolutely stellar. Every detail has been agonised over by the staff, giving a great dining experience. The whole experience lasted from 6:30-10:30, however the time flew. There is plenty of parking nearby just behind the Playhouse, which in itself sets a nice tone in the restaurant due to being lit up on the outside. I would love to see some collaboration between Sonnet and The Playhouse given the similair themes regarding poetry and theatre. The quality of the food is exemplary and we left feeling fully satisfied. Each course was unique, with a wonderful array of flavours and fresh produce. The staff were absolutely amazing, attentive and great to talk to, this put us fully at easy and made us enjoy the experience even more. I think with a few small tweaks and maybe a tiny bit of proof reading of the physical menu, I can see Sonnet achieving a well deserved Michelin Star. 5 stars

Wow! We booked for our 19th Wedding Anniversary as a special treat while we were on holiday in the area and we were so glad that we did. We had the 14 course taster menu and it was absolutely amazing. Every course was delicious, flavourful and so beautifully presented. We couldn't fault a single thing. The service was also excellent with drinks arriving minutes after being ordered and each course explained by one of the chefs. Along with a list of each course, notes were also given to each table to explain the stories behind the courses and the ingredients used which was great. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the tables really nicely spaced out and the atmosphere was very relaxed and enjoyable. We were also given an anniversary card by the restaurant which was a great touch. We live 4 hours drive away but will definitely visit again if we are in the area. Book now!

The Hog's Head Inn is a modern hotel with casual rooms and traditional pub cuisine, offering free breakfast and Wi-Fi. The inn features a wide range of meal options, including the best carvery in Alnwick on Sundays. It is named after the fictional pub in Hogsmeade from Harry Potter, making it a must-visit for Potter fans. The family and dog-friendly inn offers unfussy rooms, including twin, family, and accessible options.
We booked this place as it is very accessible to where we are attending a wedding. At the entrance, there were different brochures of attractions in the area that are good to visit. The room was big, cozy, clean, and had a nice view from our window. We had dinner at the restaurant and the food was fine. I ordered the crispy pork, though it tasted good, I was expecting it to be crispy, but it wasn't. It's more like it was cooked in marination rather than deep-fried to make it crispy. Nevertheless, the staff were accommodating, especially the gentleman who served our food (I didn't catch his name), as well as the lady named Liv, who took our orders and helped us to print a document needed for the wedding the following day. Overall, our stay here so far is amazing, and I can't wait for the free breakfast included in all their room rates.
Jose M — Google review
As a family of 5 its always hard to find a hotel which will accommodate us in 1 room but the Hogs Head was brilliant. We had a very large family room with room for 6 and everything you need. Tea and Coffee facilities with some nice biscuits. Iron, ironing board and even a safe. The room was clean and modern. Then there was the breakfast which was included in the price. This was a nice buffet style breakfast with everything you want. The bar is great with plenty of drinks to chose from and lots of indoor and outdoor seating.

Conveniently located at the side of the a1 on the way in to Alnwick the Hogs Head is a modern building with ample parking. Very pleasant staff on arrival. I was dining alone and I did not feel uncomfortable. I had a very nice sausage and mash and cabbage which was delicious Around £15 so quite good value. This establishment has rooms so I might give them a try next time I'm in the area.

Just got back from a one-night stay and I can’t stop raving about it! The room was spotless, perfectly warm, and the bathroom was just lovely. I enjoyed two meals at the restaurant, and the food and service were top-notch. The team really made me feel welcome from check-in to the end of my stay. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on this gem!

Visited for drinks over a year ago before a friend's wedding, and went back when we needed to travel to Alnwick. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. We visited during a muggy summer and the room was cool despite no air-con - they did provide a fan, but we barely need to use it. Perks of a stone building. The bed was so comfortable we both slept straight through. The bathroom was cosy, but the shower was nice and powerful. We had dinner, and I'd recommend booking a table when you book your room, as they are always busy - for good reason. Unfortunately some of the menu was unavailable, but the food was incredible, as was the service, and the drinks were really good too. Breakfast was another level entirely, being so closer to the border, you can enjoy the best of English and Scottish breakfasts, proper food to set you up right for the day. If you're ever going through Alnwick, definitely make a stop at The Hog's Head Inn, you won't be disappointed.
Rachel B — Google review
A sour start to my stay here. They cancelled my booking then had me stood at reception 20 minutes whilst they tried to work out where to put me. Then they had the cheek to tell me they'd need me to change rooms part way through my stay. I declined as I was working nights and they expected me to wake up to change rooms. The food was forgettable. The rooms are a good size, but basic. Tiny non smart tv, no air con, no fridge, no gym, no pool. Most staff seemed nice, I think the reservation people cancelled it, not the hotel staff. The phone at check in is so quiet that staff can't hear it, had it worked they would have known I was running late and maybe avoided all the aggro they caused.
Ben C — Google review
Very good value for a really lovely and massive room, extremely clean and quiet. Dinner was exceptional quality and again very reasonable price wise. Looking forward to returning and gutted it’s only one night.

I can not praise the Hoggs Head Inn highly enough. We are staying for a long weekend to explore the county, great location. The room has all you need and is very comfortable. The restaurant is very pleasant and the staff are busy, maybe a little under staffed, but friendly and nothing is a bother. The food is very generous, tasty and a menu that is above the ordinary. Well done 👏 ✔️

The Pig in Muck, located in the heart of Alnwick's market place, is a popular spot offering a diverse menu featuring brunch items, sandwiches, tapas, and sharing boards. The indoor and outdoor seating options make it perfect for enjoying the weather while savoring their selection of cocktails, local gins, fine wines, and beers. This cozy establishment is known for its delicious cocktails like the salted caramel espresso martini and lemon meringue pie cocktail.
Good food. Good coffee. Nice atmosphere. What’s not to like! Only a small venue but you can take advantage of good weather since there are plenty of tables outside. Be aware though that it’s a cashless venue.

Nice pub on the edge of the market place, warm day so we sat outside with drinks and a mixed platter each. Menu is very limited, but that isn’t an issue as there are loads of other places you can go if you want more variety. The place was busy as it was Saturday market day, but the service was quick and efficient and the staff were pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed our food and the ambiance of market day in the sunshine. Would recommend.

Both the coffee and food were just delicious. This was our 2nd visit in 3 days. Staff are so busy, however your food is fresh, coffee is hot and they take their C19 protocols very seriously The local cheeses are to die for. Please try them, you won't be disappointed.

Enjoyed our brief lunch here with the cheese board and a side of Chorizo. Staff were friendly and food was good and reasonably priced for a light lunch. Was perfect to sit out on the chairs outside in the square and enjoy the sun and sights. Also dog friendly.
Nicholas S — Google review
Was drawn to this newly reopened premises . The sharing platter of Charcuterie, but alas it was disappointing, very small ( 2 slices of what can only be shop bought Chorizo, small lump of unknown cheese , oatcakes small x4, pickled artichoke, small gerkins , olives and dressed salad ). Selection of tap craft beers were limited and not the same as the beer menu . Only saving grace were the friendly , happy servers ( who were recently employed ). Special thank you to Jasmine . Worth a visit , but maybe try something else from the menu which my offer better value .

Tanners Arms Alnwick is a small, characterful 19th-century pub with a friendly atmosphere and great selection of beers. The venue operates around its jukebox, making it a haven for rock music enthusiasts. Despite its size, the pub exudes charm and warmth, offering a welcoming environment for locals and visitors alike. It's known for serving locally brewed real ale and is dog-friendly.
An independent camra award winning pub with a heart! A great selection of local ales with 8-9 different taps, I particularly loved the two by two. It's beaming with conviviality, people are here to drink together, if there are spare seats at your table they are free to anyone, makes for an intimate warm atmosphere. The best of the area is showcased here, people are so friendly. Definitely the best pub in Alnwick! No food served but we grabbed a pie to go just so we could come back here.

Fantastic little pub specialising in local beers which are obviously chosen with thought and love. The atmosphere is great, it's just the right size so that you can easily make new friends or keep to yourself if you want. The staff are friendly and know their beer. The place looks incredible too... I wish I could have stayed all day. I wish it was my pub actually, then I'd never have to go home.

Wandered in whilst strolling around alnwick and were really pleasantly surprised by the warm welcoming atmosphere. We tried a few of the local ales and the bar staff were helpful in recommending which ones to try according to our preferences. We managed to get a seat, the bar isn't very big but we invited another couple over to share the table as it seemed like others were doing similar. Great atmosphere would have liked it to be my local!

5 stars all around. No food is offered and it's made obvious before you even step in the building...among other rules.... well please step in anyway because you won't be disappointed. Very comfortable and relaxed environment, superb staff with knowledge of the current/upcoming ales, excellent music and a unique decor to enjoy. Definitely hope to be back to enjoy more local ales and hopefully some live music! Cheers!

No food, but by far the best place to have a pint in Alnwick. Welcoming place and staff, great selection of beer (and some good whisky). There's a sampler with 3 different beers for £6 (2025) that's definitely worth it.

Small real ale pub that keeps its ales fastidiously well and serves them with enthusiasm and friendliness. Good music ethos too. Would be 5 star if it had a few interesting Belgian or German bottles to widen the selection a little.

An absolute must visit. Came for the first time today and found our new favourite cafe - Came with all the family and all of us were blown away with how amazing it was here. I had the corned beef pie with a latte, and took a couple of cakes and scones home with us. Very generous portion sizes and delicious food. Had lots of different things to choose from and never seen such a variety of scones. Bit of a treck for us but will 100% be back. Keep up the hard work.

I went for coffee and a scone (huge and delicious scones ) and came back later for lunch because the menu is so good. The French onion soup with cheesy toast was superb, goats cheese toasted sandwich with it also excellent. First class service and very helpful staff, knowledgeable about in ingredients. The building has loads of character and the toilet is spotless with a range of handwash and hand creams. My dogs loved it too, they got free bacon. Definitely my favourite place to eat in Alnwick, always come here when I visit. Highly recommended.

Amazing place! We had part of our wedding reception there. The staff was amazing and even left a bottle of champagne for us in our room. They were exceptionally accommodating and helped make our special day memorable. The rooms were great, and some of our guests also stayed there. I would definitely recommend it.

Lovely staff and location, unfortunately the room wasn't very good at all. The bed was very uncomfortable and my TV didn't work. The lock was temperamental as well, and very wobbly, so I didn't feel very safe. I'm sure the bar service etc is great, I just didn't get a chance to use those. Customers seemed cheerful and happy with their experiences.

This pub is now called The Hairy Lemon. We called in for lunch having been dismayed to find our usual favourite eatery permanently closed. We were greeted on arrival and looked after from start to finish by a very friendly lady. I was pleased to find a good selection of gluten free choices all at great value. My partner said the veggie lasagne was his best meal of our holiday. We will definitely return.

Nice pub. Has an “Olde worlde” feel about. More room inside than the front suggests as it goes right back. Food was excellent. We just had a light lunch in the form of a sandwich but I have to say it was one of the best ham sandwiches i’ve had. Unfortunately, only 4 stars due to the terrible coffee as, in contrast to the food, it was awful! Being weak, bitter and boiling hot. But, I guess if you want decent coffee, go to a coffeehouse!! Having said that I would definitely go again. I’d just have a beer instead!!

Couldn't get booked in next door but this has lots of space. Menu wasn't that exciting with the nicest being the single pork chop which was cooked really nice. Just let down by slightly over cooked veg..but still ok to eat. Only one small negative.. my table was a little bit sticky. They have rooms upstairs for staying over night and are situated in the heart of Alnwick with parking located five mins walk away

Superb meal. 6 of us with varying tastes dined. Service was outstanding, range on the menu was immense. The food was delicious (we all had different courses) and great value for money. We're in the area on a family holiday and will probably eat here at least once more before we head home.

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND! On entry, we were greeted with a warm, friendly welcome. Shown quickly to a nice table and asked for drinks and poppadoms. Staff are very friendly and chatty with a smile. We were given time to look at the menu, and ordering was easy. The pickle tray was amazing. The yoghurt sauce 😋 was the best! The food arrived and looked great! Wow, we were not wrong it was delicious!! We travel a lot and eat a lot of curry and this was by far definitely one of the best! Everything was very fresh and tasty, and the chicken just melted. All the ingredients used were clearly very freshly prepared. Enjoyed every bit!! We gave constructive criticism of the naan bread as this was super freshly made, just lacked flavour to the ones we chose. Still tasty! The guy (Mr. Newcastle fan!!) Came to ask if everything had been OK at the end, and we had a good chat and were made to feel very welcome! I requested he thanked the chefs for amazing food!

Highly recommend! We were visiting the area and looked for somewhere Halal. This family owned restaurant came up, so we thought to give it a try. We called ahead and they kindly accommodated us. From that initial call and on everyone was so polite with great customer service and care. We ordered the samosa chaat, chicken punjabi karahi, 2 naan, steemed rice and gulab jamon with ice cream all to share between 2 adults - which was the perfect amount of food. They kindly catered for our blend of drink, pineapple juice mixed with mango juice (you have to try this mix). The background music was great too. Overall an excellent eatery, with not a single fault whatsoever and prices seem fair. Btw I am someone who frequents Indian/ Pakistani restaurants in the capital of curry and trust me when I say, this is really that good - I had to leave a review. PS sorry about the photos, couldn't wait to tuck in, then I remembered to take photos!

Third visit to this fabulous curry house, as family recently moved to the area. Each visit has been amazing…chicken shashlik the first two times and chicken Punjabi Karai tonight. The shashlik was incredible but the karai was even better! Garlic and coriander naan cooked perfectly. Best karai I’ve ever had. Lovely, friendly and efficient service, from Abdul, and a great atmosphere too. 😀

The most delicious Indian food we’ve had - 10/10! Main dishes were beautifully presented, and the salad we ordered was the best we’ve had and complemented our food perfectly. Everything was hot, you could taste the freshness of the ingredients. The service was fantastic - the staff are just the right amount of attentive, ensuring you have drinks and that you’re not sitting too long between courses. Both the restaurant and staff are immaculate; glasses and crockery are beautifully clean and polished. We will be travelling from North Tyneside to Alnwick every time we want Indian food from now on!

We booked a table on a busy Friday night and were treated to a genuinely delicious, well priced meal. All the dishes we tried were excellent, as was the service. As well as the attentive and friendly service we received, I couldn't help notice the friendly, respectful attentiveness one of the waiters showed to an elderly couple sat nearby. We had eaten here before and been impressed, but this time was even better. You can tell when people working in a restaurant take pride in their business and that clearly, abundantly, visible here and rightly so. My wife and I fully intend to return when we are next in Northumberland.

Lovely cosy stay, staff very friendly. Breakfast offered a good selection of hot and cold food served at your table. Our room was spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. The only downside was the traffic noise from the main road outside, however, that did not detract from our stay and is not something the hotel can do anything about. Would certainly stay there again and take our dog which is a bonus!

Can't rate the rooms as we only visited for lunch. Friendly service, good options on the menu, particularly the children's menu! Food took a reasonable amount of time, and reasonably priced. I had a hot beef baguette and fries, and it was nice. Kids had pizza and fries, and sausage and mash (son wasn't keen on the mash). Did find it odd that they put a side salad with balsamic dressing on the children's plates though.

Great little bar. My go to place when in Alnwick. Relaxed atmosphere, gentle hum of conversation, good selection of well kept ales at reasonable prices. Only downside is I live about 200 miles away so I won’t be able to visit that frequently.

Stayed locally and dropped in here quite a few times to sample the local ales. The bar staff were really lovely and helpful in helping us select drinks according to our preferences. The ale house has a different feel to it compared to traditional style pubs-more like a cafe than pub. The large windows make it bright and welcoming with a clear view in from outside that draws you in. Inside the seating and tables are more cafe style giving it a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. A great spot if you are looking for something a little different from the usual pub setting.

What a fantastic place to spend the evening, not a pub as such more like like someone's front-room with a great selection of beers and spirits, friendly staff and pork scratchings. I have seen that Alnwick’s first micro bar was open so we had to call in. A great variety of very well kept local cask ale, local gins, spirits, keg and soft drinks were available. The bar was very knowledgeable and we had a good chat about the brewing industry. We have really enjoyed ours visits to great ale house and when back in Alnwick will be calling again. There is parking on the Main Street in Alnwick which is not far to walk. We had bicycles so we’re able to lock up outside the bar.

We booked a table at the Whittling House for lunch and it was well worth it! We visited for Sunday lunch and liked the cosy atmosphere of the place immediately. The staff were friendly and attentive, and our Sunday roasts arrived quickly. The food looked appetising and tasted lovely, and there was plenty of it with additional bowls of vegetables. Desserts were equally impressive. We are only visiting, but if we lived here we would definitely be coming back. One advisory is to allow a little time for parking when you arrive as there is no car park.

This is a beautiful welcoming place. Housed on the main street of a wonderful village. Top service always with a smile. The staff are fantastic everyone of them. The food was delicious we had a generous breakfast and good coffee. We also ate here in the evening it was marvellous. Dont hesitate book it. They also welcome dogs in certain areas.

We came for dinner and they were able to accommodate three of us with ease. Booked on OpenTable about 40 minutes prior to arrival. My advice is book early! Food was amazing a stunning range of local starters and fresh produce. Whilst I can't comment on the rooms this place screams high end. Great staff, attentive service and tasty food.

Seven of us celebrated a friend’s birthday here this week , Very nice place , delicious food , and wonderful service from a young girl who was so polite and enthusiastic. We were all very impressed by her , only to be told it was her second day . Well done Annabelle , we thought you were delightful.

We were visiting Alnmouth and having walked the dogs on the beach looked for somewhere for lunch. So pleased we chose The Whittling House. It is dog friendly, and we found all the staff very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and the dessert portions very generous. The price was reasonable and we can definitely recommend if you are in the area.

Such a beautiful location and a superb place to stay. Staff were excellent, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The food was 5 star and then the choices at breakfast also worth 5 stars. Would highly recommend a stay here if you're in the area

We don't live in Alnwick, but we are there at least twice a week. The Coach is a real hidden gem and we really enjoy going there. The staff are always friendly and welcoming even though we are not locals. Good selection of well kept wines and beers. Can't wait for the reopening after the refurb. I haven't rated the food as we have never eaten there, but I'm sure it will be really good. .

The place looks like it's had a recent refurb, and it's very well done. The place looks great and spotlessly clean. We had a young man serving us who was so polite and barely made us wait for anything, which was great. The Guinness was proper, and there was practically no wait for the food, which was really nice. The curry was lovely, but my only criticism was, there could have been more sauce (but that's personal preference). My better half said the lasagne was lovely, too. Great location, great staff, great food, great atmosphere... what's not to like...

The coach Inn is a great village pub, Tracey,Gemma and all their staff work very hard to make this a friendly place to visit. The food is cooked and presented perfectly so call in and enjoy a typical village pub, even the locals are friendly.👍

We popped in on the way back to Durham. Proper pub. Full of people having a bit craic and a laugh together around tables. Small free buffet along the bar for the locals. Cosy atmosphere. X

Can't be anymore disappointed with one of lady (with bandana) who made us feel less than welcome. We had 3 children (2 out of 3) have additional need and very fussy with food. Me and my husband were going to get drinks and lunch, however the children wouldn't eat. We called at village shop to get them a tub of locally sourced ice cream. (Morwick) We sat outside not to disturb other diners, was told very rudely about kids with ice cream not being able to have anything other than food from the pub. My husband tried to speak to her about how ridiculous this was and she was unnecessarily rude. She then sent another staff member to tell us again. The children had to stand outside the boundary. Other customers couldn't beleive it. Needless to say we left and will not be returning. So upset, bitterly disappointed and hungry.

The food was great, staff were friendly and helpful, and the pub felt very comfortable. Lovely to see it looking great again. Thank you!

Very welcoming and friendly . The food was great, Sunday roast followed by a twix sundae. Easily a recommended place to eat, drink and relax.
