Anping Old Fort, also known as Fort Zeelandia, is a 17th-century fortress located in Tainan City, Taiwan. Originally built by the Dutch East India Company, it now serves as a museum and offers insight into Taiwan's rich cultural heritage. Situated near Anping Old Street, visitors can immerse themselves in local culture while enjoying delicious snacks from the culinary capital of Taiwan.
A must visit when you are in Tainan, especially when you are Dutch. A place with a lot of history and where they are not afraid to show it. Very interesting to see how multiple cultures used the fort. Would recommend to see the place but keep in mind it is a more touristic place so it might be busy.
Jasper E — Google review
Quick visit of the fort, you can go on top of the tower. They have an app which allow you to travel using AR, helping you to see how the full complexe was prior the current status. A small museum is made, it is good to start form there. The tickets for foreigners is 70NT and for Student it is 35NT provided you show a physical student card ( photo on the phone doesn’t work). If you are coming by car, plenty of free and paid parking lots are available.
Amel A — Google review
Beautiful Fort with red bricks. The view of Tainan from the watchtower is amazing. Not much to learn about the fort other than a room with it's history timeline. It is just a fort, so other than looking at it and take pictures, there is not much to do. I also don't understand why you can't enter the basement.
Robin A — Google review
A good museum to learn more about the history of Tainan. Not everything has translations so be ready with google translate. There was a busy little market going on outside when I was there (Saturday afternoon)
Jade J — Google review
A good historical place to visit and very interesting since it captured the influence of the Dutch in the past. While I could understand Chinese, it was helpful to have English explanations too. Place can be a little hot during summer and parking can be hard to find around the area. Seems like the gate is not properly located on Google maps as well so we ended up having go around before finding it.
Sean L — Google review
Historical place which gives a peek into Dutch colonial history in Taiwan. It is a nice place to hangout. Recommend taking the free walking tour around the town including the fort. There are some stairs and it might not be wheelchair friendly.
Sundar R — Google review
Anping Fort is the oldest fortress in Taiwan. Located in Tainan, it is a landmark of immense historical significance, often considered the birthplace of modern Taiwanese history. We can see the site is a mix of ruins and later constructions: -The Red-Brick Watchtower -Fort Zeelandia Museum -Remnants of the Original Walls -Historic Well & Archaeological Sites -Statue of Koxinga
Simon W — Google review
It’s a beautiful place. You should climb to the top of the tower to enjoy the distant view, and it’s even better if you take some time to read the historical information.

Anping Old Street, also known as Yanping Old Street, is a historic street in Tainan, Taiwan. It was built by the Dutch and features a mix of architectural styles including earth corner houses, red brick low houses, and Western-style buildings with intricate reliefs. The street is lined with shops selling souvenirs and local crafts. Adjacent to Anping Castle, this area was the site of the first Dutch settlement in Taiwan and is home to Anping's first commercial street.
We don’t have much time but it looked like there was a good selection of food and snacks. My son bought a small dog carved out of wood to take home as a souvenir and we got some bubble tea. We also ate at a restaurant with AC and it had photos of famous people who had also eaten there. We also saw a traditional puppet show.
Jason H — Google review
Old city charm and lots of historical buildings and history. Take a slow stroll and walk around. Shrimp crackers stalls popped up everywhere. Nearby jetty is a nice open air break. Overall a relaxing stroll along an old city.
Cys E — Google review
Walking through Anping Old Street feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow lanes, historic charm, and lively atmosphere. The street is packed with food stalls offering a variety of Taiwanese snacks, from crispy shrimp rolls to freshly grilled squid. One of my favorite finds was the coffin bread, a thick toast filled with creamy seafood or chicken—it’s both delicious and fun to eat! During my visit to Anping, I had the chance to try a traditional Chinese massage with oil, and it was exactly what I needed. After walking around all day, my body was aching, and I was feeling a bit under the weather. The massage therapist used a combination of deep pressure and smooth oil techniques to relieve tension and improve circulation. What stood out the most was how they incorporated traditional Chinese medicine principles. The therapist focused on specific pressure points and energy pathways, helping to ease body aches and restore balance. The herbal-infused oil added to the experience, providing a warm, soothing sensation that left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. If you’re ever in Anping and need relief from travel fatigue or body aches, I highly recommend trying a Chinese oil massage. It’s not just relaxing—it’s a true healing experience!

A wonderful and bustling spot with lots of great food! It’s right next to Anping Fort, making it easy to explore both places in one trip.

Best place in Tainan to find interesting artists, enjoy a walk, find snacks and dried fruit. Kids always have a wonderful time with the games and so many things to see. Prices are unbeatable here.
Nathan Y — Google review
I came following Google Maps, it was fun, following the video. When I arrived, the road wasn't very long, and all the shops were selling the same rice crackers. I was very confused. Is there nothing else to sell? I drove a long way but there was nothing. I guess I didn't walk to the right place.
A T — Google review
A great walking tour destination for people who would want to know more about the early history of Tainan and Taiwan. You can find the An Ping Matsu Temple and the old site of the An Ping Fort (Fort Zeelandia), the latter also housing the Fort Zeelandia Museum and the observation tower where you can have a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

Shennong Street, a charming avenue in Tainan dating back to the Qing Dynasty, is renowned for its quaint historic shops and homes. Once a bustling area serving as the main entrance for river ports, it now offers a delightful stroll through its picturesque surroundings. During Chinese New Year, the street comes alive with vibrant red lanterns adorning its walls and shops participating in decorative lantern competitions.
Super cute. Lots of cute cafes also in the area. Loved the colourful lanterns. Lots of cute touristy/craft/art/merch kind of shows. Also a gorgeous temple nearby with a massive beautiful tree if you keep walking along the street. Very insta worthy. Also extra gorgeous during golden hour. Want to go back during the nighttime, as I think they light the lanterns and fairy lights. There happened to be a little alley market on as well!
Lexi N — Google review
Came here many times! Even though it’s a tourist spot, the vibe feels just right. The street is lined with old local houses and well-preserved buildings that give it a really nostalgic charm. It’s mixed with bars, cafes, and snack shops that make your Tainan evening feel more lively and relaxed at the same time. I really enjoy walking through, especially when the lanterns light up at night. It’s not a long street, but the mix of culture, food, and lights makes it a place I never get bored of :)
Earn S — Google review
5 minutes on foot from Yongle Market. Surprisingly, it was quiet with couples of tourists were there, meaning we could slowly and enjoyably wander around without worrying of the crowd. The alley itself was small, short but very nice with some artistic coffee and shops. The lanterns and the old houses made it even more stunning, day and night.
Lê K — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous little street. Would recommend coming in the day and night, so you see the calmness of the day and the glow of the streetlamps at night. There's lots of cute little bars and eateries, and places to get souvenirs and crafts.
Laura C — Google review
Cool street but quite a few storefronts were closed or empty. Visited around 3pm in November. Street is about 1 block long. Easy to find on google maps.

Night visit 5 🌟 Good vibe, and lots of photo opportunities. The shops are all pretty interesting to look at there are a few eateries. There is definitely something for everyone here.
Tony L — Google review
Definitely a beautiful site at night. Street market is okay (night markets are better - check out my other review for night markets). Food is great. I would recommend to go at night but early enough that you don’t miss out on shops as they close by 9 pm

Anping Tree House, situated in Anping District of Tainan, Taiwan, is a must-visit attraction that provides insight into the area's history and natural allure. Initially constructed as a warehouse for the British trading company Tait & Co. in the 1800s, this unique structure is now intertwined with a banyan tree, forming a breathtaking fusion of man-made architecture and natural surroundings.
Although it was quite hot during our visit, the tree house is still worth a visit. The entrance fee is not much and this spot serves as a good reference that presents the history of the local development. A tour between 45 minutes to an hour is ok depending on how you would like to see it! Parking is not available but there are some within walking distance.
Chengkang ( — Google review
If you like history and are into calligraphy then you might like to come here for a leisure stroll to look around. It will cost you 70NT though. Sure the banyan tree in the building is cool but if you have been to other places with banyan trees this might not be so interesting for you. The souvenir shop doesn’t have much stocked and what it does have you can buy anywhere. It’s not a large place to wall around. My kids were bored (10 and 4) but they did enjoy feeding the fish and watching the heron hunt. I’d say that was the highlight. Overall for me personally I wouldn’t go out of the way to see it. Lots of mozzys and for me not a lot of personal interest aside from the banyan tree overgrowth.
Jenny T — Google review
This place feels really special, especially since there are not a lot of places with this much history still standing in Taiwan. Would recommend to visit. Usually less people here compated to fort Zeelandia. Can visit with the same ticket as for Tait & Co. Take your time to explore all the rooms and see how the trees are holding the walls together. The place can feel a bit spooky.
Jasper E — Google review
Hauntingly beautiful. I felt like I was walking through one of Guillermo del Toro's dreams. I can't believe that it's all one tree! Stairs strategically placed throughout the abandoned warehouse allow you to see various parts of the tree from different vantage points. Nature is extraordinary! Lots of photo opps.
Nan W — Google review
Great must see location in Tainan. The Banyan tree completely took over the building. This gives great opportunities for cool pictures. The recent update with mirror structures is nice idea.
Sören D — Google review
A calm and cooling spot in the summer heat. Entry ticket gives access to the Calligrapher's memorial exhibit, Tait Merchant building, the maze-like tree house, small cafe, and gift shop Even if you're not interested in history or museums, it's a quick interesting experience
Craig B — Google review
Enjoyable cultural attraction. Not all exhibits had English translation. Bearing in mind, it’s the tree house we came to see, not the attached small museum…it was a bonus.

The Hayashi Department Store is a historic multi-story building with restored 1930s architecture, offering a variety of goods for sale and featuring an eatery. Following a renovation from 2006 to 2014, the store now attracts visitors looking for souvenirs, Taiwanese teas, condiments, spices in vintage-inspired packaging, local apparel, stationery, and homeware by Taiwanese designers. The top floor includes an observatory deck and the only rooftop Shinto shrine in Taiwan.
One of the oldest department store in Taiwan with history that can be traced back to the Japanese occupation era. I'm glad the city decided to renovate the building and preserve its own heritage. The building is aesthetically pleasing, and lots of its old features inside were preserved, like the elevator and floorings. The interior design feels like a mix of old school and modern vibes. I highly recommend at least checking out the terrace on the top floor. It's neatly designed but unfortunately doesn't provide a very good city view. There's also a Japanese shrine up there. Even tho its titled as a department store it feels more like a huge souvenir store, the items sold inside are mostly artistic crafts and souvenirs of all kinds. Still, I recommend checking it out if you're in Tainan. Undoubtedly a pretty cool place to explore.
Yuhng Y — Google review
Very cool historic departmental store and worth checking out. Recommend taking the elevator to the top and check out the roof before working your way down. We had a lovely view of the sunset from the roof top. The departmental store had lots of interesting items and worth spending plenty of time there. We got some earrings there and some tile coasters. Very happy with the purchase and the experience.
Edwin K — Google review
Has many different goods available. From household goods to fashion goods, one can find things that they like. They have quite a variety of Taiwan edible goodies on the first floor. The 5th has a cafe which serves delicious pastries and the soft toufu dessert. There is even a small souvenir shop on the top floor! Must go! Definitely worth a visit.
Linda L — Google review
A "must see" if you are interested in a relic from the Japanese colonial period. Interesting to learn that Taiwan was once ruled by the Japanese for half a century and that this area was once known as the "Ginza" of Tainan. Of note, the restrooms were tiny and the tofu pudding desserts served on the 5th floor cafe were delicous but servings were on the petite size. They also require each person to order something. Displays were in Chinese only but you can learn alot more about this relic doing a web search.
William L — Google review
This is a very historic old building but also has a cool set of small shops inside it. There is a big queue to use the elevator, and it's tiny, so just take the stairs. Speaking of the stairs, they are very steep! The cafe at the top is cool and has some tasty treats on the menu for reasonable prices.
Alistair D — Google review
The cafe at the top is very stylish and serves nice desserts and drinks. The caramel pudding with “Taiwanese macaron” was a real treat, and the red tea float was also very nice. A great place to relax. Minimum order for sitting is pretty much just buy something.
Brian L — Google review
A historical place reminiscent of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan. Structurally well preserved with modern updates that do not affect its historical stature. Worth a visit.

Tainan Confucius Temple is a small 17th-century temple with traditional architecture and a tranquil courtyard. It's located in the West Central District, making it convenient for tourists as it's near Tainan Train Station. The temple is part of the historical and cultural attractions in Tainan, including Anping Fort and the former Tait & Co Merchant House.
My morning visit to the Tainan Confucius Temple was peaceful and inspiring. The serene atmosphere, beautiful architecture, and rich history made it a truly meaningful experience. A perfect place to start the day with reflection and calm.

Beautiful gardens within the walls, free entrance. There is TWD40000 fee to go into the temple enclosure and see the many exhibits and halls dedicated to learning, prayers and festivals. Not a vast amount to see but still fascinating and well displayed.

A wonderful historic site. Raw and no frills. A place of worship so be respectful. Just across the pedestrian walk to the main entrance on the opposite side of the street is a Shop selling home grown Taiwanese Cocoa products. The chocolate ice cream a a treat for chocolate lovers and refreshing in the Taiwan heat

A quaint little temple in Tainan. I'd enjoy it more if it wasn't so hot and humid that day. I was fortunate to listen to the in-house ensemble when they were rehearsing. Many thanks and much appreciated.

A very well organized shrine/ place of worship for Confucius. The ground is huge and you would only need to pay for the admission fee if you want to see the main temple (the admission fee is extremely cheap/ we could have easily spent more time here but we had more stops to hit up throughout the day.) I learned a lot about who he was and how the rituals of honoring him are carried out these days. I would say this is one of the must visit places if you’re in Tainan!

The Chimei Museum, established in 1992 by Mr. Xu Wenlong, is a cultural gem located in Tainan City, Taiwan. The museum houses an extensive collection of Western art, including paintings and sculptures, as well as furniture crafts, ancient relics, natural history specimens and fossils. One of its notable features is the display of ancient instruments and violins.
Absolutely beautiful museum. The building and grounds were built to model a western museum and European gardens. Perfect for taking a walk. The entry bridge is grand and every bit a statement piece. The music drifting across the grounds sets the scene nicely. The exhibits inside are fantastic and have an international focus. I loved the arms and armour and musical instrument permanent exhibitions. The art lovers will be thrilled at the fine arts, Rodin gallery, and sculpture halls. Their natural history and fossil exhibition is incredible, too. Altogether, one of the best museums in Taiwan! Highly recommend. I spent four hours here and could easily have spent more.
Leah C — Google review
Incredibly beautiful museum. I enjoyed it, and learned a lot. They have a big collection of weapons, music instruments, statues and art. I bought the english audio tour. It is a good addition to learn extra but there is already alot of english text around the museum so an audio tour is not required. Sometimes when i wanted to use the english audio tour device it said: this chapter is in manderin only, which I think was very weird. After de viewing the museum there is a nice gift shop, a 7-11 and a Starbucks. I would recommend this museum and the beautiful park around the museum building.
Robin A — Google review
The Chimei Museum is absolutely stunning - one of the most impressive and unexpected finds in Taiwan. The grand, European-style architecture and beautiful park setting make it worth visiting even before you step inside. The museum’s collections are world-class, from ancient weaponry and artifacts to one of the largest violin and instrument collections on Earth. The exhibits are beautifully presented, and the mix of art, history, and culture makes for an unforgettable experience. Don’t miss the virtual concert in the music hall - it’s a wonderful surprise that ties the whole visit together.
Jacob S — Google review
Beautiful museum in a beautiful setting. I loved the classical music playing from speakers in the park. The arms and armour gallery was my unexpected highlight. I also really liked the musical instruments gallery. The fine art gallery was also very nice but hard to compare when you’ve been to the galleries in Europe.

Excellent service - golf cart took us from parking lot to museum and back! Staff readily available to answer questions. Very clean, bright, cool and comfortable. Even have small Italian style restaurant (a bit expensive for lunch) and Starbucks and 7-11.

Great museum and the place is huge with lots of interesting collections and shows to check out. I especially enjoyed the exhibit where they had their Taxidermy collection with animals from around the world. very cool. The day we were there, there were lots of school kids there too, so it was a bit crowded, but still having enough space to move around.

Splendid experience at the museum good for family and sportive individuals who like to spend time on the massive park in front of the museum. Free entrance for some parts of the exhibits. The ticket is around 200 to 300 per person. Food and restaurants inside the hall. Souvenir is avaliable.

A great place to roam around and discover new things at every corner. Lots of little places, restaurants, cafés. We bumped into the first place which has lot's of small stalls where local artists/manufacturers display their goods that can be purchased on the spot. There's a little restaurant/bar inside that place too and we ordered spaghetti Bolognese and hot chicken wings. The spaghetti and the drinks were incredibly good. We will definitely come back before we leave.

Tainan Art Museum Building 2 is a striking space showcasing contemporary Taiwanese art and sculpture exhibitions. The purpose-built structure features bold, cutting-edge designs that have been likened to a mockup for a base on Mars or a ziggurat. This newly opened museum is part of the Tainan Art Museum complex, which includes two separate sites: Building 1, housed in a historic Art Deco building, and Building 2 with its bold contemporary design.
A fairly new art centre for this beautiful historic city Given that Tainan is one of the oldest cities in the country, they know their arts, and they know how to well arrange art exhibitions, just the building itself is a piece of architectural work for visitors to admire Honorary mention, the volunteers are extremely helpful, that completes a great experience

Good spot for a rainy day and an absolutely beautifully designed building. Unfortunately many of the exhibitions halls were shut while we were there (I think they are all temporary galleries so you need to get your timing right). The joint ticket with the other art gallery building is worth it. I preferred art museum building 1.

Chikan Tower, also known as Fort Provintia, is a historical site in Tainan with a rich and varied past. Originally built by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, it has served as a military fort, the governor's residence, an army hospital, and more. Despite being destroyed in an earthquake in the 19th century, this iconic location has been reconstructed and stands as a testament to Tainan's history.
Former Dutch outpost that is open quite late at night. It's been turned into a historic site but is still under construction. Not much to see inside, but one can head to the 2-story tower but also check out all the koi fish in the pond!
James — Google review
I don't mind if the historic building is under renovation, I applaud them taking steps to maintain their heritage. However, still charging full price 70NTD entrance ticket is abit absurd. Considering most of the building is still under renovation, and there's only a small part of it was opened for visitors. In it's current state it's definitely not worth spending 70NTD to go in. Wait until the renovation is done if you wanna visit inside.
Yuhng Y — Google review
Currently under renovation and slightly underwhelming I visited Chikan Tower during my recent stay in Tainan and unfortunately the timing wasn’t ideal. The main structure is currently under renovation and mostly covered in scaffolding which takes away quite a bit from the experience. What’s accessible right now feels limited and not really worth the ticket price unless you are particularly interested in ticking off landmarks. There is a pleasant little pond with red fish and a landscaped rock fountain that adds a nice touch to the grounds but it’s not enough to make up for the missing centerpiece. If you’re short on time or traveling on a budget I’d say hold off on visiting Chikan Tower until the renovation is complete. Tainan has plenty of beautiful temples and historical sites to explore that offer a more fulfilling experience right now. Check for updates before you go – it could be worth it once the restoration work is done but at the moment it’s more of a pass.

Date of visit: 23 August 2025 There is a small entrance fee, but it is free for people from Tainan. Unfortunately, most of the place is under renovation. We will visit again when it is completed.

I've visited this place in evening it has a nice view but not so many English translations that can help more foreign visitors to enjoy the history. Some of the areas are under rennovations and also there is a 70 NT dollars entrance fee.. Overall its such a good experience...

Tainan Flowers Night Market, also known as Hua Yuan Night Market, is the largest night market in Taiwan. It offers a wide array of food stalls, merchandise vendors, and game sections. What sets it apart is the abundance of food vendors selling classic street foods, international finger foods, and local Tainan delicacies. The market also features game stalls where visitors can enjoy pinball and darts with friends.
A must go place in Tainan. Loud, busy, and impossible to miss. I liked the open space, the general cheerfulness, the cheap and great food options. They also sell stuff for the house. I liked everything except the "coffin bread".

Tainan Garden Night Market – A Must-Visit Local Gem! 🌟🌙 We had the pleasure of visiting the Tainan Garden Night Market last weekend during our stay in Tainan — and what an experience it was! This bustling market truly captures the spirit of Taiwan’s vibrant street food culture. The variety of food stalls was incredible — from juicy grilled meats and fresh seafood to bubble tea and Taiwanese snacks, there was something for every craving. Everything we tried was delicious, and the best part? The prices were surprisingly affordable, making it easy to indulge without guilt. Beyond the food, the market also had plenty of stalls selling clothes, accessories, gadgets, and quirky souvenirs. It was fun just walking through the lanes, soaking in the lively atmosphere and energy of the crowd. Yes, it was crowded — but that’s part of the charm! The buzz of locals and tourists enjoying the night made it feel like a true cultural experience. Highly recommended if you're visiting Tainan and want a taste of authentic Taiwan. Go hungry, bring some cash, and get ready for a night full of flavor and fun!
KAMRAN S — Google review
I liked how the overall night market layout works where you have concentrated area for food, games and etc. Good to go early to ensure you have place for dine in. We tried their local Tainan noodles and of course the oyster omelette. What I like about Taiwanese food is they always find ways to include vegetables to make it a balanced meal. This market is different from Shilin night market is due to the variety of local cuisine and not the same items at every store. We had fun playing games too. Childhood games that will bring back memories for locals.
Sue G — Google review
This night market has variety of things such as shopping for clothes for infants, toddlers, adults, and home textiles, eateries, toy shops with local and international characters, arcade games, ballon shooting, jewellery, electronics, mobile phone protection cases that are very fancy and colorful and other knick-knacks. Overall a great experience to visit here
Karthik S — Google review
Garden Night Market is easily one of the best night markets in all of Taiwan and is a must visit when you're in Tainan. We made it a priority to stop by during our one night in Tainan and were not disappointed. This outdoor, open air market is full of street food vendors lined up in aisles, along with areas for children's games. The food options here really stood out. As a vegan, I was surprised at how much more I could find here than other night markets. I had some incredible fried stinky tofu as well as some famous sweet potato bites, and watching the mastermind's behind these prepare the food was such a treat. There were also plenty of drinks to be had such as fruit juices to wash everything down. Some vendors will have dedicated seating areas for you if you purchase their food. For vegans, look out for vegetarian items and ask to make sure there are no eggs or dairy in your items. After having been to a few in Taipei and Kaohsiung, there's no competition that the best food and vibes are here in Tainan. Please come visit and make sure to not leave hungry because there are so many options.
Andy N — Google review
In my opinion, this is the best night market I've visited in Taipei so far. A wide variety of food options, plus a sort of flea market with new goods. If you want, you can also participate in karaoke on the large stage or just listen. Great.
Wolfgang F — Google review
Recommended. One of the largest outdoor markets in Taiwan. Not many repeat stalls apart from games. Lots of classics like Taiwan fried chicken, stinky tofu, bubble tea, steamed fish and oysters, shallot pancake, sausage and noodles.
Robert Z — Google review
This is probably the top two, largest night market in the city, with Wusheng being larger. The difference is temporal. Being open on both Saturdays and Sundays, while Wusheng is open on Fridays and Saturdays gives Tainan Garden the monopoly for Sundays and the vendors know it, the crowds flow and the aisles are thick with hungry customers. If it's Sunday, there's no better place to be then right here, though I would consider the variety of foods here to be less than Wusheng and Xiaobei night markets. In general though the nigh markets are scattered throughout the city. It's the vendors that hop from neighborhood to neighborhood, to meet local demand.

Sicao Green Tunnel, also known as the 'Taiwan mini Amazon,' is a popular attraction in Tainan's Taijiang National Park. It features a striking canopy of mangrove trees that form a green tunnel over the Yenshui River. Visitors can take a 30-minute boat tour through this natural wonder, capturing picturesque reflections on the water and enjoying the serene and beautiful scenery.
Very nice short trip (30 minutes). You go trough the mangroves. You have to watch your head and they don’t explain anything in English. However the signs are in English and there’s a lot of wildlife you can see! Definitely worth the money!
Hana N — Google review
The Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠色隧道) is one of Tainan's most famous and picturesque tourist attractions. It's often called the "Mini Amazon of Taiwan" due to its dense, overhanging mangrove forests that create a beautiful, serene green canopy over the water. The Sicao Green Tunnel offers a unique and beautiful nature experience that is hard to find elsewhere in Taiwan. The stunning visual of the green canopy reflecting on the water makes for unforgettable photos and a very peaceful escape from the city. It's a highlight of any trip to Tainan.

The day we were there was pretty hot, wearing a life jacket made it even hotter. The views along the green tunnel were very special, Amazon forest like. The tunnel was narrow and trees were hanging low, the guide had to call out constantly to lower your head to pass through. It was an interesting experience.

Eternal Golden Castle, a defensive structure constructed during the 1870s, is now in ruins due to natural disasters and brick theft. The castle was built by Qing Dynasty soldiers and features cannons, a moat, and a brick tunnel entrance. Despite its state of disrepair, parts of the wall covered in banyan roots remain intact. Local authorities have made some previously inaccessible remnants available to the public for viewing.
Not as glamorous as you think it is. The swan ride no more when I was there. Not sure is it because of Typhoon or not. The greenary is not as green as the picutre few years back. Abit of dry brown with crack soil. But if you like cannon, can go there. They got 3 type of cannons. 1 is the normal fake cannon. 2nd is the fake Big Cannon. 3rd one is like the Attack On Titan kind of cannon. Can move to left and right, of course I never move it. That is a Replica cannon but looks real. They got for photo. And with the greenary. Still looks pretty, people will still wow. There is a park nearby too, they are link to the Navy Destroyer Ship. You can check it up if you still have time. I would say the Eternal Golden Castle is a must to go.
Just W — Google review
Worth a visit if you’re in the area sightseeing but not necessarily worth visiting solely on its own as there isn’t so much to see. We visited late in the day on a rainy weekday so we had the place to ourselves but didn’t need much time to get around the grounds.
Philip S — Google review
I was expecting a bit more, from the name and reviews. It's also not a big as I thought. All outdoors so go when good weather. A walk around the castle wall is pleasant and interesting to see the replica cannons ( one of the smaller ones is genuine). Good that it has been preserved as historical.
Vincent O — Google review
A beautiful place. It's not surprising that it didn't even protect Taiwan for 20 years, since, apart from its modern cannons, it was already outdated when it was built. Other countries have already built forts made of reinforced concrete. Still, a beautiful place, especially if you're heading to Yuguang Island anyway. You get a glimpse of the artillery of the time, although all but one of the cannons are replicas.
Wolfgang F — Google review
Do not expect much from this site, it's good to bring food and have a picnic and feel the past Not as interesting as the fort in Anping. Background Built: 1874–1876 By: Qing Dynasty official Shen Baozhen (沈葆楨) Purpose: Coastal defense fortress to protect Taiwan (then part of Qing China) from foreign naval threats, especially after the 1874 Japanese invasion of Taiwan (Mudan Incident). Why it was built In 1871, Ryukyuan sailors were killed by Paiwan aborigines in southern Taiwan. Japan used this as a pretext to send troops in 1874 (Mudan Incident)—their first overseas military expedition. Although Japan withdrew after negotiations (with Qing paying compensation), the incident exposed Taiwan’s vulnerability. Shen Baozhen, sent by the Qing to strengthen Taiwan’s defense, ordered the construction of Eternal Golden Castle in Tainan, the first modern Western-style fortress in Taiwan. It was equipped with imported cannons from Britain and Germany. Japanese Connection 1. Trigger for Construction (1874) Without the Japanese landing in southern Taiwan, the Qing likely would not have invested in such a strong coastal defense in Tainan. So the castle itself is a direct response to Japan’s military expansionism. 2. First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) After Qing China lost to Japan, the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895) ceded Taiwan to Japan. Local Taiwanese militias resisted under the short-lived Republic of Formosa, but Japanese forces advanced rapidly. Eternal Golden Castle was used by Formosan resistance fighters to defend against the Japanese navy. However, the outdated cannons and fortress design were no match for Japan’s modern military power. By October 1895, the Japanese had taken Tainan, and the castle was surrendered. 3. During Japanese Colonial Rule (1895–1945) Eternal Golden Castle lost its military importance. The Japanese dismantled or sold many of the cannons, and the site was gradually abandoned. It became more of a symbolic ruin rather than an active defense point.
Danielo T — Google review
The Castle is an interesting place to visit. They provide you with explanation of its history and the archaeological research done there. It is all translated into English. There is not a lot to see. You can leisurely visit this place in under an hour.

As someone who loves literature, I was so excited to find out this museum exists! The exhibits were impressive. With the many changes throughout Taiwan’s history, there are gaps where written literature wasn’t as prevalent. I liked how history, literature, and culture were shown to be so intertwined. While of course not everything is translated, the most significant descriptions and placards are bilingual in English and Mandarin, so tourists will be able to enjoy this museum, too. I highly recommend adding this museum to your list of must-see places. Reserve 90+ minutes.

A museum not to be missed for literature lovers. Presents an insightful narrative of the evolutionary history of Taiwan through the lens of the literary arts. A lot of reviews are misleading and it confused me too. This location is the national park headquarters. This is only a building with a small museum. No boat ride here. There are a few ponds around with some birds but if you're interested in seeing the black faced spoonbill this isn't the place either, the conservation is further north. Worth a stop if you have your own wheels but otherwise you're better off heading straight to other places within the national park.

This is an artificial mangrove park that offers small 30min boat tours for a decent price. You get to see some small birds and a small crab here and there, but it wasn't a mind blowing experience overall. There is a temple you can visit nearby and a sperm whale museam. Pretty underwhelming and simply not worth it given that the drive from the Tainan city center is a good 20+ minutes.

Bustling lively night market with a large variety of food! - fried sweet potato mix - 臭豆腐 - 大肠香肠 All were good and though some had queues, it wasn’t so long a wait

Highly Recommended. My favourite night market in Taiwan. It has all the food and games and vibes of the others, but much less packed, much less touristy. More seats, more bins, more space. Cash Only

Large scale night market was plenty of stalls and different style of food specialty bake tilapia is good. Also children’s and adult play carnival style ride quite clean and organized.

It’s the right size and right amount of crowd before it gets too crazy. I guess it would safe to pick the vendor with a line at front. It’s a bit tricky to order since they have different rules for some vendors.

Wusheng Night Market is easily one of Tainan’s most bustling, energetic, and entertaining night markets—an absolute must-visit if you're in the city! Open only on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, it transforms into a lively hub packed with the sights, sounds, and aromas of Taiwanese street culture. What sets Wusheng apart is its sheer size and variety. The food and drink options are endless—from sizzling skewers and deep-fried snacks to bubble tea, grilled seafood, traditional local delights, and creative fusion bites. Whether you’re a foodie on a mission or just looking to nibble your way through, there's something for everyone. But it’s not just about food. The market is a vibrant mix of lifestyle and culture. You’ll find stalls offering fortune-telling services, home essentials, beauty products, accessories, and quirky knick-knacks. It’s the perfect place to pick up a little something unique while immersing yourself in the local vibe. Adding to the fun, there's a whole section filled with classic night market games—think ring toss, balloon darts, fishing games, and more—plus a small funfair area that’s perfect for kids and families. The atmosphere is festive, friendly, and full of life. Despite the crowds, the market feels well-organized and easy to navigate. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring cash, and come hungry! Wusheng Night Market is more than just a food stop—it’s an experience. One of the liveliest and most complete night markets in Tainan. Highly recommended!

Qigu Salt Mountain in Taiwan is a fascinating attraction that showcases a hill made entirely of salt, standing at approximately six stories high. Once part of the Qigu Salt Fields, this natural wonder offers visitors a glimpse into the region's 338-year salt history. The Qi Gu Salt Museum provides insights into the area's past and offers locally made salt products for purchase. Additionally, tourists can explore the Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Fields for recreational activities on the salt.
Came here because it's nearby the Taiwan Western most point, entrance fee is 100ntd for car and 50ntd for scooter, all with the discount on some items on the drinks shop inside.
禹祺Woody — Google review
I came here mainly for the sightseeing and view. Personally I felt it was underwhelming. You have to pay $100 NTD for car entry. The only attraction here for me was climbing the salt mountain. However you can only climb halfway through as the rest of the salt mountain is still under maintenance. There are also kids attractions and a DIY workshop but these are not my interests.
Oliver Y — Google review
A visit to Qigu Salt Mountain requires an admission fee: NT$100 for cars, NT$50 for scooters, NT$50 for bicycles, and NT$50 for pedestrians. The area is quite vast, and the parking lot is equally massive. From old photos on display, it's clear the salt mountain was once considerably higher; currently, the accessible height is limited, and reaching the very top isn't allowed. Surrounding the main salt mountain, you'll find an outdoor salt-drying experience, an indoor dining area, and a DIY workshop zone. There are also outdoor vendor tents selling refreshments. Further back, there are some recreational areas, though I didn't get to explore them all due to the heat. It distinctly feels like a place cherished by older generations. While the effort to revitalize the park is evident, it seems more work might be needed to fully realize its potential.
G C — Google review
This place is not too much people and quite far from tainan station. The entrance is only 50nt but you rides in some activities here, you need to pay. The salt mountain itself is not as beautiful as what in the photo but you can have a lot of choices to do in this place. Like rides mostly for children, experience the museum with art of story about tainan, salt making, water bumbboat. A lot of parking space available also here.
Jeny T — Google review
It was nothing special, literally just a mountain of salt, cool view though. We used the public tourist bus (98) to get here and the ride was pretty smooth. Not much people and no admission fee if you use the public bus.
Recursiaon — Google review
Very special salt mountain with an exhibition selling salt. However, it is closed and cannot be visited during our exploration to Tainan.
Instinct P — Google review
It costs $100 to drive in (we were dropped off by a taxi). You can’t climb the salt mountain due to the recent typhoon and rain. You can walk around and take pics of the previous statues that they put on the mountain. There are some educational exhibits inside. You can ride the water bumper cars for 10 minutes for $100. It’s really hot since there’s no shade so be prepared. There’s ac in the restaurant but they don’t let you bring outside food in. The ice cream and tofu pudding was yummy!
A S — Google review
The historical amazing salt mountain became an interesting scenic spot. There are a memorial statue built each year is a surplus for shooting amazing photos. The ice cream, Douhua and other small food make here a great place for a few hours stay. Not mention it's one of the best to see sunsets in Tainan.

Taiwan Fuchenghuang Temple, also known as the Fuchenghuang Temple, is a prominent Taoist temple in Taiwan dedicated to the god of justice. The main deity worshipped here is Wei Linggong, who governs the afterlife and the transcendent world of the five senses in the underworld. As the god of justice, he oversees affairs in both this world and the next.
This temple is where you will go after you pass away, and the god will use the giant abacus to decide where you have to go and if you will have any punishment. Tiny temple, a must visit in Tainan.

Former Tait & Co. Merchant House, located in the historical city of Tainan, Taiwan, is a significant site showcasing the country's rich history. This former warehouse, which was once part of international trade activities dealing in opium, tea, and sugar during the 19th century, has now been transformed into a museum. The surrounding area is adorned with banyan trees that have completely enveloped the old merchant house to create what is now known as Anping Treehouse.
The Anping Tree House is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a poignant reminder of nature’s enduring power and the layers of history that shape a place. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a photography aficionado, this site offers a unique and enriching experience.
Rica N — Google review
The tree house and the Tait and co merchant house are in the same complex with the same ticket. The merchant house is interesting but lacks English translations, be ready with google translate. The tree house is the warehouse behind the merchant house. It was interesting to see how nature is reclaiming that area. I wouldn’t call it a must visit but it’s fine to check out if your in the area.
Jade J — Google review
Not many old buildings are standing in Taiwan, this is a well preserved building with a lot of history. If you are into history this is a place I would definitely recommend to visit. For the Tait & Co. House you need approximately an hour to see everything. After this you can go to the tree house, no need for a new ticket.

It's OK. There's nothing much to do or see in this place besides see the trees. Don't get me wrong they ARE cool and beautiful, and the treetop walk was nice, but don't go out of your way to come here. Tainan City has much better things to do and see if you only have limited time here. If you have an afternoon to kill why not come see the trees.

This is my favorite historic place in Taiwan in my 4 months on the island. There is a wonderful mix of historic preservation, up-close exploration, museum exhibits, gift-shopiness, and botanical splendor. We spent 4 hours here and only left because they were closing for the evening. I do encourage staying that late as the low sun makes for extra beauty and better photos.

Snail Alley in Tainan is a charming district filled with narrow passageways adorned with vibrant snail-themed murals and quirky installations. This hidden oasis offers a nostalgic glimpse into the past, providing a taste of the old city's ambiance. The small, tranquil alleys are perfect for a peaceful stroll and present great photo opportunities. With its hidden cafes and nice restaurants, it's an ideal place to wander around and get lost in its charm.
Interesting lane in tradional taiwan style. Very lovely. Just spend 1 hour to walk around and there are some lovely snails on the wall.

An interesting series of alley to walk and there is no fixed start and end point - you can enter from any direction and exit on another side. There are actual people and businesses residing in this area, but the cool part is viewing all the graffiti or display as you explore the alley. I personally feel it is not required to make a dedicated trip here but can check it out if you are around the area.

Fun place to visit but it's quite hard to follow the map. Instead, I'd recommend you just wander around and enjoy all the snail art everywhere! Supposedly, there are vendors selling snail soup, a local delicacy here, but we didn't see any when we strolled through

I loved my visit to the Museum of Taiwan History. The exhibition was insightful and the displays easy to follow. The life-size displays are attractive for children. The accompanying texts allow deeper dives to who is interested. The entire museum can be visited in an hour or two. The architecture is highly attractive. I travelled to the museum from downtown by bus: Very convenient. However, I do wonder if a visit to the Fine Art Museum would have been preferable. I only had a single day in Tainan and chose the History Museum, but now looking back ... :-/

Interactive and fairly comprehensive history of Taiwan starting from the prehistoric age until now. When I was here in April 2023, there was a gap in history during the initial days of modern Taiwan post-WWII during the period of martial law. I really liked the life sized models and attempt to place visitors in the time periods and relevant settings throughout the Our Land Our People: The Story of Taiwan permanent exhibit. Many of the placards and signs are bilingual in Mandarin and English. Highly recommend to anyone, especially expats and tourists interested in learning more about Taiwan’s history. Plan for at least 2 hours if not more. Also, the area around the museum is really pretty and a great place to relax for a little bit before leaving.

Came here for sightseeing, it never disappointed me. There is a free tour where a tram will bring you to the ocean side where you can see a nice sunset if you come in the evening. There is also a small field where you can take the sea salt. The ice cream sold here is also nice. It has a hint of sea salt. Overall, great experience and I would highly recommend if you are nearby. Best part is that it is free to come here.
Oliver Y — Google review
I’ve been to this place several times, but it’s difficult to catch the perfect weather for photographing the sunset. The fields weren’t as accessible as they used to be, where you could walk in, play with the salt, and take pictures. Due to the festival, it was crowded, so I’d probably recommend visiting during the week to avoid too many tourists.
Neti H — Google review
Nice place to visit and learn how salt is harvested from the sea. We arrived quite late and had a good view of the sunset as well. The mountains of sea salt on each tile was marvelous. Was made to understand that it will be harvested and sent to a factory closeby for cleaning and processing before being sold.

It's ok. Can get some interesting mirror pictures in the water. Was a 50 minute drive for us. No entrance fee. They were running a free tram to take you out a little bit further to see the oyster beds and learn a little bit (in Mandarin). But the tram ends with mostly a sales presentation slideshow , not a "movie" and then you enter a sales room for various salt products. You could try a free sample toothbrush pre loaded with salt toothpaste.

YongLe Market is a bustling morning market in Tainan, Taiwan, known for its variety of Taiwanese regional specialties. Connected to Shuixian Market, it features numerous vendors offering noodle and rice dishes, as well as an array of restaurants and food stalls along Guohua Street Section 3. One popular dish to try is the fish head stew, a Chiayi specialty that gained fame on the Netflix series Street Food Asia.
Probably one of the most famous day markets in Tainan city. We went there for lunch and was amazed by the various fođ selection it offered. Was also surprised by a flood of hungry tourists on the streets. The food was absolutely delicious at reasonable price. Highly recommended!

I loved local markets, especially those on Taiwan as their produce tends to be very local, farmed/caught within 200km of the stalls. You can also see the various food stalls practicing their decade old craft to produce delightful local treats. We had the large portion noodle soup with dumplings & fishball for NT$105 which is filling for 2 adults. I also witnessed a stall making Bao Ping skin and the vegetable wrap that it is used for cost NT$60 for the regular white one & NT$65 for my the green wrap. I wished I stayed at a place that has a kitchen so I can cook some of the awesome seafood from the local market.
Caleb L — Google review
Really fun for searching different combinations of local life. The wet market offers wide range of produce, herbs, traditional snacks on top of regular offering. The second floor is like going back 50 years. Mix residence, old business and young hip coffee shop, vintage shop. Not a lot of shops, but sure is fun to explore some unique experience.
The A — Google review
The old city neighborhoods are always my favorite destinations when I travel and Tainan's old districts are the best. Taiwan's night markets are world famous for the food scene but in my opinion old markets like this have much better local food and atmosphere. This market does get super crowded on the weekends but the quiet side streets are much more interesting anyway.
Mister M — Google review
When you're in the market do try the classic treat, non fried spring roll, it's so refreshing. You'll struggle to find a rubbish bin after you have finished it though, so be careful holding on to the plastic bag, as it'll have water from the roll accumulated down at the bottom. There are many shops worth trying, not even shown on google map, so just keep walking down this street for at least 15min. In the evening, the area beyond the market becomes a mini night market, well lite & with a clean and spacious toilet, so definitely worth a look if you are keen to experience night market but find them either too far, dirty or inconvinent for toilet break.

The building has elegant details that make it a great spot for photos. Inside, there are exhibits and special displays that dive into local culture and history. What’s even better is that with just one ticket, you can visit both Tainan Art Gallery 1 and 2! The atmosphere is calm and a bit nostalgic, perfect for taking your time to soak in the experience 💗

I really liked this art gallery. Your ticket is valid for both buildings, but I preferred this one to building 2. Im not sure if they are all temporary exhibitions or if there are permanent galleries - I’d recommend checking what’s on before your visit.

The city’s art centre hidden in an interesting historical building Well managed and scheduled with many local or new comer artists, that fully offers a great vibe … the big banyan tree living in the atrium is totally out of this world Therefore next trip to Tainan, remember to drop in, no regrets

Great architecture building…. Really love this old building. Every details revealed how much effort they have put in when the building was designed and built! Enjoy walking in the corridor and stair well… just stunning.
Andrew C — Google review
Some nice exhibitions currently, especially memory of a landscape, which although small had some exquisite otherworldly marble pieces. Ticket also includes the new art building, however currently not much is displayed there.
Lior B — Google review
The staff were nice, the building has its own unique feel, different from Building 2. The garden in the middle is a great little spot to sit and chill if the weather is good.
Dduki — Google review
The exhibits were more interactive rather than artistic. It is still worth a visit if you are interested in art. The $200NT ticket covers both museums but I think kids would prefer this over the larger museum.
Yu-Ting — Google review
This is an art museum very much in time with its community. Tainan is a smallish town, less urban and so in many ways more interesting than the soaking metropoles. The curators do as much as they can to bring Artist works to life by including biographical narratives and plain language explanations of the works or their subsets. So even if you lack the vocabulary of the art world, it becomes easy to connect with the artist and their works. There are several addresses dedicated to shakers children that let them play with and experiment with art materials. Very refreshing change from high brow museums that do more to ring fence the works for the 'art elites' than to make their institutions valuable to the general community.

Lin Mo-niang Park, located by the Anping Fishing Harbor, is a serene waterfront escape featuring lush picnic grounds and vibrant flowers. The park is home to a prominent statue of Lin Mo Niang, overlooking the harbor with a sense of tranquility. Visitors can be seen enjoying the verdant greenery while flying kites or walking their furry companions. The park also houses a towering white Matsu statue, symbolizing protection for Taiwan and welcoming ships into the harbor.
It is a good place for parents because their kids can hang out there for a while. You can take a stroll along the riverbank and enjoy the breeze. You can also rent a U-bike and ride around. Here you can reach the top and gaze at the female divine statue thoughtfully or look out onto the bay. Try it. Ha...

I attended the Lantern Festival on 3 Mar at the park and found that it is such and accessible, well-managed and easy to walk park with a sizable children playground, a well designed 2 storey whale structure and adequate toilets throughout the park, not forgetting the waterway flanking the park. A must do after exploring the Anping attractions.

Sunset Platform in Tainan is a bustling beach area that offers an observation deck for both tourists and locals to enjoy the stunning sunset. It's a popular spot where visitors can relax, play with water and sand at the beach, and capture beautiful sunset views. Additionally, there are convenient facilities such as toilets across the street for washing up after enjoying the beach. The area also provides free car parking, making it easily accessible for those looking to witness a breathtaking sunset in Tainan.
This place is amazing. I enjoyed watching the sunrise and sunset as well. Not only can you enjoy watching the sunset and sunrise, but you can also go camping, fishing, hunting mussels, etc. Whenever you feel like taking a break from everything, this can be your to-go place. You don’t need to worry if you have to urinate because there’s a public toilet in there. For commuters, you can take BUS 99 from Tainan Train Station(South Station), 13 stops then there you go, Sunset Platform. It's better if you go on the weekend because there are a lot of people. However, the weekday visit is not that bad. Enjoy life and be safe, everyone! 🌊🫶

Sunset platform is the most place I love when I live in Taiwan. Normally, the tourist is not that much because not all people know this great place to see the sunset and sunrise so it will have many local people with several local street food. Even though the transportation to the sunset platform is quite not comfortable as much as I expected, but if not come here just only one time when you arriving Taiwan in Tainan city, I think you will be miss this place. This place can go with the people in every style and culture. You can go with your family, your boyfriend, girlfriend, or just go alone it still worth to go. Please allow yourself to absorb the power of nature, feel the sea vibe, listen to the sound of wave gradually hit the rock area. After you finish watching sunset, you can walk around this platform area and you will see the street food in terms of like the barrow of local people to see the local food, the local snack something like that. The taste is also good for tourists to try. It’s not hard to understand each food because it’s just the simple one that make from generation to another generation. There is not much chance to try some kind like this so don’t miss this place.

Fahua Temple is one of Tainan's oldest Buddhist temples, boasting a serene and understated aesthetic. Visitors can explore the temple with a monk who has dedicated his life to its grounds. The temple features various religious artworks and statues, including a gourd believed to exorcise evil spirits. Despite not undergoing significant changes over the years, it remains a peaceful and beautiful place for visitors to immerse themselves in religious art and history.
Really great place to visit off the beaten path. It took some effort to find since Lonely Planets instructions were a bit off (look for house number 46, not 76) and then down the adjacent alley. We spent a lot of time looking at the very large and very scary sculptures of demons and the cute big Buddha. Deftly recommend!!!

It is a designated historic site by a municipality directly under the Central Government of the Republic of China. The temple is also one of the seven and eight temples in Fucheng, Taiwan. The temple's predecessor was the residence of Li Maochun, a scholar who came to Taiwan with Zheng Jing during the Ming Dynasty. Because he had no interest in fame, he planted plums and bamboos here, built a garden and practiced chanting Buddha. He was known as Li Bodhisattva. Li Maochun and Chen Yonghua, who joined the army of Ming Zheng, were good friends. In the forty-seventh year of Kangxi's reign (1798), Song Yongqing, the magistrate of Fengshan County, led a crowd to donate money to build the temple and built a three-level temple building. The front hall was dedicated to the God of Fire Zhurong (Emperor of Antarctica), also known as the Fire Temple; the middle hall was dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. The back hall is dedicated to Zhunti Bodhisattva, and there is another Zen room in the backyard. Fahua Temple faces north and faces south, with a total of five axes. The first main entrance is the Hall of Heavenly Kings, with Maitreya Bodhisattva in the center, Wei Tuo and Vajra in the back, and the Four Heavenly Kings on both sides; the second entrance is the Mahavira Hall, where the Three Jewels Buddha is worshiped, with eight Bodhisattvas, Wei Tuo and Vajra on both sides; The third entrance is the Guanyin Hall, dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was converted into a Buddhist temple to worship Sakyamuni Buddha. Its architecture integrates elements of Buddhism and Taoism. The left hall is dedicated to Emperor Guan, and the right hall is dedicated to the God of Fire. It is a rare example of the integration of Buddhism and Taoism in Taiwan. The "Yanshou Bridge" in the temple is named after believers praying for longevity. The Juxian Hall was once the gathering place of the Nanshe Literary Poetry Society. The mural "Zhuang Zhou Dreaming of Butterflies" echoes the allusion of Li Maochun. It was damaged by the war during the Japanese colonial period. After reconstruction in 1959, it still retained the traditional layout. It is now a municipal historic site. The temple preserves a replica of the inscription "Dream Butterfly Garden" inscribed by Chen Yonghua, witnessing the changes in history. The Spring is a unique public plaza located in Tainan, offering a 1.54ha open-air space with a sunken park and public wading pool surrounded by tree-dotted islets. It was created below street level from what used to be an underground parking facility for a mall built in the 1980s. The area features grassy banks, shady trees, and walking paths, making it an ideal spot for families to visit on warm days.
Nice creative idea of this place that put the playground of small swimming pool in the middle area of the town. If you cannot think about anything, you just go to this place and walk in the water, look for the good environment around that place. In the evening or weekend, it always has the parents bring their children to play and enjoy together as a family. That’s quite a warm feeling for me.

OK experience. Good efforts by developer to create a sunken below road level space on the previous mall lot. Could be designed into something more passionate like Paddington Reservoir in Sydney - maybe in future?
Aishah — Google review
Great place to come with the kids on a hot day. Lots of families with young children playing in the water. This place is one level down from the street. I think it used to be an underground shopping street before they demolished the building above and turned it into a water park. There is shade around the sides. Also has bathrooms. It is FREE to enter. This is a great part of Tainan close to lots of streets selling drinks snacks and many restaurants.

Nice renovation of the structure of old abandoned buildings. However the ongoing construction on the lower level may suggest a future re arrangement as leasig to the vendors, to bring in more visitors. Expect to see its new look in the near future.

An oasis of peace in the middle of the city. You can see the columns of a building that burned some years ago. I don't know if this can be considered a memorial but there is a small exposition about the things that there were in the building before such as shops and houses. Great place for children and for reading a book!

It's a little boring. Maybe it's because of the daytime; just an open space with no special features at all. I'm not sure if it will be more lively in the afternoon or evening. In addition, there is no water for children to play, so this place is not highly recommended.

With multilingual text guides available, it offers a friendly reception service to visitors from around the world.
Loved the repurposing of sugar mill factories into a cultural village for the art of drumming. Plenty of spaces to explore at your own time and food is great too. Don't miss the drum performance! It's on at 11am and 3pm.

Came here due to the good reviews but it is really a place more suitable if you have younger kids and someone who can appreciate drums because the ticket price for adult is not very cheap (close to TWD500 each). Drum show is at 11am and 3pm. Then you can take a short train ride, do archery, play at some playgrounds and get some food as ticket come with TWD50 discount for food purchase.

Don't treat this as another art village, but a place mainly for the drums show and with some amusement park facilities. In general the 40 mins show is great (twice a day), but other facilities are a bit worn out and not well maintained.

Visited after arriving at the Chimei Museum and learning it was closed on Wednesdays… Ten Drum Village is within walking distance of the east parking lot of the museum. You may be tempted to call for a taxi but it takes no more than ten minutes to walk. Really great recovery. Arrived in time for a drum show. Vast space that rewards just wandering around and discovering. Cool food and beverage outlets. Worth the admission (we were skeptical)

Not worth your time, solely man made acclaimed to be built with crystal. Resembles a church minus many fixtures of a church. To me I won't call it a church. Just a photo stop for tour agents to fill their itinerary. No special attractions and yet you have to pay entry fees to enter this place. If not a tourist, I wouldn't want to go near this place since it's part of the tour program I have to bear with it. No shades to shelter from the hot afternoon sun, what is before your eyes is a very tiny souvenirs shop selling some artifacts just to filled up the place and that's about it. Don't believe me go check it out yourself and have a good laugh 😂. Cheers and happy holidays. A LIKE would made my day.

This should be an on the way place to visit. We drop by this place when going to the salt field. A nice church made of crystals. Dedicated to 'Wang Ye,' celestial emperor emissaries, the temple offers insight into the dominant Heavenly King system prevalent in the Southern Min area.

Beautiful Taoist temples with several independent places to visit. It's very popular and for sure, a place to see. The temple is actually one of the largest to be dedicated to "Wang Ye", who are the many emissaries of the Celestial Emperor. For me, the place has a lot to offer visitors or worshippers, with the main gate, the first temple, followed by an inner and more recent temple, 2 separated gardens (mainly on the right side), one living quarter with old architecture, and one area with beautiful traditional buildings and garden (on the left side). That last part is not free (tickets were 50 TWD per person but it's recently closed for maintenance). During Chinese New Year (or any temple ceremony), the temple is really crowded.

Anping Canal Park in Tainan offers a glimpse into the city's history, with remnants of the once vast Inner Sea now replaced by dry land, farms, lagoons, and mangrove swamps. The broad waterway is lined with trees and provides scenic views of Tainan City. Visitors can take leisurely boat rides during the day or opt for night cruises to see the city illuminated by neon lights along the 2.3 km canal pathway.
Beautiful place to take a walk and enjoy dinner. I have come here multiple times, and never be disappointed once. You can continue your walk to Anping Old Street (which is absolutely recommended and popular). Once, I came here during the dragon boat festival, it was very lively and amazing. You should try to come here at least once if you come to Tainan.

It's a peaceful place to stroll during the daytime, offering a nostalgic atmosphere. While there are no random activities or shops available in the settlement, it's an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil experience.
Hidden treasures in Tainan - the area is formerly military housing turned museum/workshops/exhibitions spaces. Some of the old buildings have been well preserved and being utilized by the community as creative workspaces and for featuring various artistic works.

(Translated by Google) Tainan Wude Hall is the largest and most representative martial arts building in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, with both historical value and architectural features. ### ⛩️ **Architecture and historical background** 1. **Historical evolution**: Built in 1936 (Showa 11), it was originally a venue for the Japanese Butoku Association to promote martial arts such as kendo and judo, and was called the "Great Japanese Butoku Association Tainan Branch Wude Hall". After World War II, it was taken over by Zhongyi Elementary School and was designated as a Tainan City Historic Site in 1998. 2. **Architectural features**: The exterior imitates the style of traditional Japanese shrines, with a hip roof made of reinforced concrete and a washed stone exterior wall to present an imitation wood structure. The first floor is a service space, the west side of the main hall on the second floor is a judo field, the east side is a kendo field, and the north end is an altar. The entrance requires stairs to reach the second floor directly, with a unique design. ### 🏫 **Anecdotes and current situation** 1. **Symbiosis of campus monuments**: The Wude Hall is now the auditorium of Zhongyi Elementary School. Students are often proud that "the school auditorium is a monument". The school cooperated with the planning of the Confucius Temple Cultural Park and demolished the wall to integrate the campus and the monument, forming an open cultural landscape. 2. **Continuation of functions**: Although it has been converted into an auditorium, kendo courses are still held in the hall from time to time to continue the spirit of martial arts. Tourists often mistake it for a Japanese shrine, but it is actually a rare martial arts building that is completely preserved in Taiwan. 3. **Location secret**: The first generation of Wude Hall was originally located in Dazheng Park (now Tang Dezhang Memorial Park). In 1936, it was moved to the outer garden of Tainan Shrine (now next to the Confucius Temple). It is only separated from the Confucius Temple by a wall, forming an interesting contrast of "martial arts and Confucianism coexisting". ### ⏰ **Visiting Information** - **Opening Hours**: Open to the public only on Saturdays and Sundays (08:00-18:00), for campus use on weekdays. - **Transportation**: Near the Confucius Temple, walk about 15 minutes from Tainan Railway Station, or take the city bus to "Jianxing Junior High School (Confucius Temple)" stop. --- ### This temple witnessed the martial arts culture of the Japanese rule, and also became a modern educational venue, reflecting a model of the revitalization of ancient monuments, and became a landmark landscape of the "wall-less campus" in Tainan.

The Tainan Judicial Museum, located at No. 307, Sec. 1, Fuqian Rd., West Central Dist., is a historic complex that was inaugurated as the Taiwan District Court in 1914. It is considered one of the three supreme Japanese-era architectural works in Taiwan and features an eclectic mix of Western architectural traditions. The museum offers interactive exhibitions on the history of the courts, along with costumes and role-playing opportunities for visitors.
The Tainan Judicial Museum is located near the upscale hotels in Tainan City. Despite the serious name and the grand architecture, this is a very interesting museum. The volunteer docents are very knowledgeable and they can show you all the key attractions if you don’t have a lot of time. It was really neat to learn about the historical events that took place in this building, but the best parts were the “behind the scene” facts such as the holding cells, the secret path only for the judges and the air raid hide out. It was also a fun experience to put on the robes and sit on the judge’s chair. I didn’t have enough time to learn about the exquisite architecture of the main hall but I hope to come back soon.

The time we've visited this location almost everything has been closed. It's good to take a walk here, or take a look at the trains, and there is a very small playground with some swings as well, however it doesn't really worth the visit if nothing is open. We've been there on Saturday, so it shouldn't be an issue in my opinion. The architecture is the same as in the 10 Drums cultural village in Tainan, which is a great place and attracts many visitors. It seems like they're also building a traindepo, so I can imagine there will be touristic train service in the area in the near future. It would make the place recommended in my opinion.

Erliao Sunrise Pavilion, located in southeastern Tainan, is a wooden walkway leading to an observation deck offering breathtaking views of the Central Mountain Range. Visitors are advised to arrive early and bring warm clothing as the area can be chilly. The observatory provides safety barriers, vending machines, and restrooms for convenience.
This is a great spot to watch the sunrise with no hiking required. It is about a 1 hour car ride from Tainan’s city center, and it is a large lookout point with lots of standing room. This is a historical Wind Temple under protected by the Tainan city government! The Temple was built during Chin dynasty and was located at the coast line at the time. It seems that the historical site did not get the respect it deserves.

(Translated by Google) This temple, dedicated to the God of Wind, is located in an alley on Ximen Road in Tainan. Built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, it boasts a history of over 200 years and is the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to the God of Wind. Neither a resplendent facade nor a constant stream of tourists, it stands quietly, like an old man waiting for the return of the wind. The four accompanying deities enshrined in front of the temple—Thunder God, Lightning Mother, Fire God, and Water God—are fascinating to examine with closer inspection, their anthropomorphic figures, their skin color, posture, expression, accessories, and handheld implements. The gourd dedicated to the God of Wind (also known as Fengbo) is particularly captivating; it contains not medicine but various winds from heaven and earth! The Wind God Temple in Tainan City is modest in scale, yet boasts exquisite architecture, featuring meticulously crafted stone and wood carvings. The towering stone drum-shaped gateposts, in particular, evoke the piety and lingering charm of bygone faiths. The brackets and carvings on the wooden beams whisper memories of a bygone era of navigation. In the West, wind is often seen as a symbol of the "Holy Spirit," an invisible yet life-giving force. In the East, we revere the wind as a deity, praying for its gentleness and stability through incense and rituals. Having just returned from a trip to Greece, I happened to be here to gain a deeper understanding of Eastern and Western mythology. (Translated by Google) **Wind God Temple** was built in the fourth year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1739) by Taiwan's Circuit Inspector E Shan. It is located on the Nanhe Port of Wutiao Port in Tainan. It is the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to the God of Wind and is one of the "Seven Temples and Eight Temples in Tainan". It was originally built to pray for safe navigation, and a "Reception Pavilion" was set up to welcome Qing Dynasty officials to Taiwan, witnessing the rise and fall of shipping in the Taijiang Inland Sea. During the Japanese colonial period, it was partially demolished due to urban reconstruction. The existing building is a three-courtyard layout rebuilt in 1924, still retaining the characteristics of Minnan architecture. ### **Main God and Features**: - **Wind God**: Holding a wind gourd and a ruyi, in charge of wind, with the Fire God (red skin holding a whisk), the Water God (blue skin holding a dragon and snake) and the Thunder God and the Lightning Mother, showing the belief in natural gods. - **Reception Pavilion Stone Archway**: The place where Qing Dynasty officials landed, with gorgeous stone carvings, inscribed with "Kunwei Yongdian" and "Aozhu Qingtian". - **Temple of Light**: In 2013, the night lighting was designed by international lighting designer Zhou Lian, and it has become a night attraction in Tainan. ### **Famous Anecdotes**: 1. **Thunder God accidentally struck a filial wife**: Legend has it that the Thunder Goddess was a filial daughter-in-law in her lifetime. She cut her flesh to serve her parents but was accidentally struck by the Thunder God. The Jade Emperor named her the Thunder Goddess and held a mirror to illuminate the lightning strike to avoid hurting innocent people. 2. **Earthquake miracle**: The Meinong earthquake in 2016 destroyed the stele pavilion. During the restoration, it was discovered that it was originally the "Xianshi Pavilion" and the "Tangyin Pavilion", not the bell and drum tower. After textual research, it was rebuilt according to the ancient appearance. 3. **Official Hall Stolen**: The statue of the original prefect Jiang Yuanshu was stolen, and the statue was later changed to the Earth God. --- ### The Wind God Temple combines the history of official temples with folk beliefs, and is an important symbol of Tainan's maritime culture. Originally, it was part of the larger "Jieguanting" complex (which included the front gate, the official hall, and the Fengshen Temple). Today, only the temple remains. In 1918, the majority of the Jieguanting was demolished due to urban renewal, and the deity statue was moved to the official hall for worship. In 1924, local gentry raised funds to rebuild the Fengshen Temple in the official hall. In 2016, international lighting experts redesigned the temple and its lighting system, illuminating the ancient temple with the concept of "Temple of Light." 📌Features: ─ A temple dedicated to the God of Wind, a unique one-of-a-kind temple in Taiwan ─ Fujian-style architecture ─ Murals on both sides of the main hall depict the past scenery surrounding the temple ─ Unique lighting ─ Naturalistic deities, especially the God of Thunder, with his bird-like beak and feet, and their legends are fascinating 📌Brief Takeaway: This small but historic temple is worth a visit. There's also a small museum nearby where you can learn more about the temple's history. 📌Categories: Historical Buildings (including monuments), Qing Dynasty (Original) 📌簡史:1739年建立,後來1765年整修增建。

The place looks mediocre from far but it actually became very interesting and charming after a few minutes in the visit. It looks like the ruins of a century-old Chinese village, but it is actually the work of an artist to collect and rebuild this village, in this state of ruin. Whether you consider the place as historical or artistic, it is very pleasant to walk here and there, enjoy the architecture and take pictures (late afternoon lighting is best). The place is not large and it could be visited quickly, but you can spend easily 2hrs, strolling around and taking pictures. The entrance ticket is 100 TWD, there are toilets and some stalls for food, drinks, ice cream... There was a street performer, dancing with a hoop and playing drum during my visit. He gave a reasonable show. It is possible to rent traditional Chinese dress to have original photos. Overall, the visit is enjoyable although I regret that there isn't much explanation about the place.
Martin M — Google review
Great place to see the Taiwanese style houses fused with some Chinese taste. Very artistic! Some places may seem a bit shabby but are indeed quite interesting. The village is still under construction and expanding. The lake and the whole structure make it a good place for photo shooting! Not easy to get to because no public transport is served here.
CP S — Google review
Beautiful old architecture made of brick! Live performances! Little island in the lake! Can rent costumes to take memorable photos!
Scott S — Google review
Nice fish pond lined with rustic, old fashion Taiwanese brick ruins and country farm raised fish scenery. Yiu can rent Qing dynasty custome for pictures. Smell a little but the small art gallery got a great collection.
Chris C — Google review
Great place for tourist and locals. Cheap ticket and you can even dress up as old dynasty costumes. Theres a small lake in the middle.
Alex W — Google review
The scenery is too artificial, not really an art village. Not suitable for disable using wheelchair.

This small eco-resort is a great place to stay if you're looking for an authentic, natural experience. The camping structures look like yurts, and the resort sits on the edge of a mangrove forest. You can take boat tours or forest eco-tours here, and breakfast and dinner are included in the price. Friendly service makes this a strong recommendation.
I love the beautiful ambiance of the place, very close to nature. I wanna give 5 stars for staffs, very pleasant, very approachable and very accomodating.
Shaira J — Google review
Relentless wind that makes camping nearly impossible, wild dogs that rip into your bags are everywhere and some extremely unfriendly staff. Even worse, they offer no accountability for damages to your property by allowing children to use their equipment without adult supervision. DON'T GO HERE... I never will again.
Robin W — Google review
Very good experience, excellent views at seaside, fresh air to play around. Accessible to anything unless the food. The place is very far from the store, needs to ride a car out of the place. 7- eleven is in kilometer distance as the market place. No near store in the area.
Xini S — Google review
The service by the staff is excellent. One of the few places that goes above and beyond to satisfy the customer. The place is average and more hyped than the website shows. The night walk and the day boat trip was okay. The staff overall are very friendly and helpful. Nothing spectacular about the place.
Errol M — Google review
Very beautiful flat and clean beach. Sometimes there occur some fishes in the waves. Unfortunately one can't go too far into the ocean for swimming because of dangerous currents. There is some shadow created near and on the beach. Belongs to the #Arnaheim resort. Recommendation for anybody in that area as there are just few beaches around.

Very relaxing place but those 3 little skinny puppies with their mama living under the bridge was so pity..anyone can take them home before its too late??

Local history museum
The Cultural Museum of An-Ping Oyster Shell Cement Kiln in Taiwan showcases the centuries-old practice of mixing oyster shell ash with cement, sugar water, and glutinous rice to create cement. This unique method was used in constructing older houses, which locals believe is the reason for ant infestations due to the sweet taste.
A museum that see better days.
J Y — Google review
Interesting showcase of how this parts of Taiwan made use of or rather recycle and incorporated local oysters into the construction building up of the city
Matthew L — Google review
Closed for construction. I visited on November 18, 2024. Did not give a date when it will reopen.
Chris L — Google review
A small museum about the history and process of making cement from oyster shells. There's a fair amount of English signage. Worth going to for about 20 minutes.
Ali L — Google review
Very nice exhibitions about oysters, oyster ash, and local history. Spent about 20 to 30 minutes.
Joyce C — Google review
Not too much to see here.. the museum focuses on the culture of oyster farming. Air inside is stuffy on a summer's day.

Just some pictures displayed with some explanations. Very poorly managed place with no air conditioning at all during the hot summer day.

Night market
Dadong Night Market is one of the largest and most popular night markets in Taiwan, offering a wide variety of Taiwanese and international food stands, as well as services and merchandise. It is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 6 PM to 1:30 AM. The market is particularly bustling on Fridays when university students from the nearby school frequent the area.
There are various muslim friendly foods: halal Turkish shawarma (it's like in Indonesia), giant octopus, fried cuttlefish, Thai tea, fish cake, glazed sweet potato, sweet corn, sweet potato balls, orange lemon juice
Nabila R — Google review
lively night market in tainan; the gua bao was really tasty! green onion pancake, pork , and spider noodles were great as well. be prepared for no seating though! (@roaming.eater)
Jessica M — Google review
It’s like a rectangular shaped location - which is actually really great because you can return to any stall very easily. And no need to keep walking on uneven roads and smelly sewage covers.
D Y — Google review
Going to this night market was easily my favorite experience in Taiwan! It’s a lively, authentic local spot with endless rows of food stalls, games, and shops - and surprisingly few tourists. The whole place bursts with energy, from the sizzling sounds of cooking to the smell of spices and the glow of colorful lights. I loved how local it felt, like a community gathering rather than a tourist attraction. I tried crispy fried chicken, a Korean corn dog, and a brown sugar milk tea among other things - all delicious and very affordable. There was so much variety, from classic Taiwanese snacks to fun, modern street food. It’s the perfect place to wander, eat, and soak up the atmosphere. Definitely a must-visit when in Tainan!
Jacob S — Google review
08 July 2024 The good thing about this night market is not too crowded when I was there. For me, the night market is just food and more food. Nothing special about their food here. Taste is pretty decent. And in my opinion, the price in the night market is not cheap.
IKM — Google review
Good atmosphere ...smaller compared to garden (huayuan) night market but definitely worth a visit
VT — Google review
One of the best night markets I’ve been to at Taiwan, including the ones at Taipei. Nicely sized but so many food stalls! Could finish it in 2 hours including eating. The only thing we didn’t like was the marshmallow ice cream which wasn’t toasted sufficiently and the texture was a bit weird.
Jennifer Y — Google review

Tainan Wu Garden is a serene and picturesque traditional Taiwanese garden located in Tainan. The garden features an outdoor stage, pavilion, rockery, and a lovely coy pond. Visitors can also explore the wooden teahouse called Daybreak 18 within the garden premises. This historic site offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city, allowing visitors to relax amidst beautiful banyan trees and well-maintained Chinese-style landscaping.
During the week, especially in the morning, it is a nice place to visit. Quiet and peaceful. Also there is a traditional Japanese style tea house.

全美戲院 is a unique second run theater where you can watch two consecutive movies for just 140 NTD. The seats may not be the most comfortable, but the sound and visual quality are exceptional. Additionally, they offer a variety of snacks and bottled drinks for your enjoyment. One of the highlights of this theater is the hand-painted movie posters by master Lai, who has been painting them for over 50 years across the street from the theater.
Beautiful movie theatre with an old-time charm. They have movies with English subtitles available, just ask the kind staff at the entrance or the ticket booth in the front. The hand-painted movie posters make it even more special. It was a highlight of our trip to Tainan!
Elvira — Google review
I came here because I want to see the old school hand painted posters. This might be the only few places left to do big billboard by hand. The master Lai has been painting movie posters for last 50 years. He paints across the street from theater. I would love to see the movie here next time. I feel like time traveler goes back to old days. Let’s hope they will keep this as long as possible.

Didn't go in the cinema but outside there are many movie posters and the artists studio is there too but closed on Sunday. The cinema sells postcards from these paintings as well so you can ask the staff for your favourite movie/s
ArChy — Google review
Have u heard about second run theaters, this one of the kind. Just okay 140 $NTD and then get a chance to see 2 different movies consecutively. I had a chance to see the latest THE KINGS MAN and NIGHTMARE ALLEY. Seats were okay, no push back or comfy cushion seats.. For eating they do have some little est snacks and bottle drinks like black and green tea 🍵. Sound quality is good and the visual quality is also exceptional, for a second run theater, they are doing really well and good. On a rainy day and u don't have anything to do, I think 🤔 we can go and spend time in there, the air-conditioning is also great. Happy movie marathon Peace ✌️ ☮️ 🕊
Yeshwant R — Google review
Passed by and stopped in my tracks to admire the handpainted posters. Just found out that it used to be Ang Lee's favourite haunt too, when he was a teen! Amazing.
YJ K — Google review
This time I go here not for movie but a culture sightseeing. What so special is the hand-painted artwork on the wall of the theater. Just cross the road one can also see some retired paintings.
KAIJEN T — Google review
charming movie theater, with the famous hand painted film posters, volume was a bit low though but tickets are very good priced
Olaf F — Google review
In modern society, it is quite hard to see the hand printing movie posters. That is definitely worth visiting at least once. These posters seems to tell the old time and how our elders creat their posters. Kind of old-new fusion.
