Japan 🇯🇵 Tokyo.
Nestled in the area of the former Tsukiji fish market, Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan is a quaint spot where we sat right at the counter. The open kitchen, with the chef preparing sushi in front of us, and the warm, wooden interior created a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
FOOD:
This Japanese restaurant specializes in nigiri, sashimi, and a few small appetizers, primarily offering set menus. The chef kindly agreed to prepare nigiri piece by piece for us. We tried the shrimp nigiri, but the shrimp lacked the tender, sweet quality of deep-sea varieties, and the rice portion felt overly generous. Next, we ordered otoro, the fatty tuna belly, which unfortunately had tough, sinewy membranes that made it difficult to chew. However, when we ordered otoro as sashimi, the chef thoughtfully removed the membranes and sliced it finely, improving the experience. The uni (sea urchin) was decent but leaned more toward a seaweed-like flavor than the expected sweet creaminess. The seasonal fish, something akin to sardines, was a highlight—fresh and delicious.
SERVICE:
The service was excellent, with staff understanding some English, making communication smooth. Interacting with the chef added a personal touch to the dining experience.
VERDICT:
While the nigiri and sushi were average for the price, especially in such a tourist-heavy location, the pleasant atmosphere made up for it. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a stop for a casual meal, but for more refined and flavorful sushi, you’d be better off exploring other options.
