Udon noodle restaurant
Udon Shin is a cozy spot known for its crispy tempura and house-made udon noodles served with various accompaniments. The specialty Carbonara "Udon" has garnered high praise, featuring a unique blend of soup stock made from bonito shavings and butter-fried bacon. The restaurant takes pride in using quality ingredients such as seasonal vegetables and "mentaiko" (fish roe).
Udon Shin is a very small restaurant with fewer than ten seats, so be prepared to wait in line. I didn’t make a reservation, so I had to get a queue ticket first. When it was almost my turn, I received an email notification, but even then I still had to wait outside for quite a while. The food turned out to be even better than I expected, absolutely delicious and worth the wait. I will definitely go back next time, but I’ll try to make a reservation in advance.

My sis in law told me about this place. We decided to check it out as we finished our city sighr seeing walking tour earlier than expected. Despite the early hour dor dinner, there was already a queue outside. We dutifully stood in line. A server came out and handed us the menu for us to peruse. Dur to the limited space and seating capabilities, she asked if she could split our party to 2. We agreed and placed our order. One by one, the diners finished their food and left. We were seated and our food was served fairly quickly. It was really, reaaly good. My udon was succulent and springy. The broth was rich and flavourful. My sis in law had the soba and she said it was good as well. The star of the meal was undoubtedly my bacon tempura. I heard the pork belly was excellent but I didnt get the chance to sample it. If you don't mind standing to queue, give this place a try.

Absolutely worth the hype. I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather these last few days in Tokyo before flying back, so I decided to just pay the reservation fee instead of waiting in line. When you arrive, just let the staff know you have a reservation and they’ll move you to the front and you’ll be seated in less than 5 minutes. The udon is incredible. Its fresh, bouncy, and perfectly cooked. The fermented butter is packed with flavor. And don’t skip the deep fried sweet potato as it was my favorite part of the meal!
Ha L — Google review
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Come early to get a ticket which will have a QR code you can scan and check when the restaurant is ready to serve you (you can’t wait in line unless you get the okay). Restaurant opens at 11 I got my ticket at 10:25 (19th in line) was called to come to the restaurant around 11:45 and wasn’t seated until 12:20. If you want to eat right at 11 I suggest coming by the restaurant 9:30/10 to get your ticket. While you’re waiting to get seated they’ll give you a menu and you can place your order so once you get seated the food is already in front of you. Definitely not a place to spend hours in I was out by 12:45. Service was brisk rather than friendly but it made sense due to the amount of people they had to serve. The food was incredible and I don’t know how I’ll go back to eating carbonara anywhere else.
Iman — Google review
so many things that i did not like about this overhyped udon spot. first of all, the queue system is ridiculous. It doesnt go by order of when you get your ticket. for example, when we got our ticket, it said 17 parties ahead and a 75 min wait so we left and did other things. came back when our status said we were first in line but it didnt matter because we had to line up again and wait to get inside. a group who just got there and grabbed a ticket number was able to line up behind us. To summarize, THEY DO NOT GO BY SEQUENTIAL ORDER. Also we signed up for LINE notifications but we didnt get one when we were first in line.. we only found out because we kept refreshing the page. second, service was cold and unfriendly. did not feel welcome there despite trying my best to be respectful and speak japanese to the workers as a tourist. it felt embarrassing to speak japanese to the waitress only for her to speak english back to me 😭 like im sorry for trying third, and most importantly, the food. it was so insanely salty. I couldn't finish my bowl, even after drinking lots of water with my meal. the initial bites were fine. good flavor and chewy noodles but as i kept eating, it just got saltier and saltier. this applied to both udon dishes that we ordered: the citrus/sesame and the cod roe udon. cant seem to understand why people love this place so much. i would not eat this again, much less wait in line for it either.
Natalie Y — Google review
Straight to the point: The Udon (noodle itself) is indeed one of the best and freshest I’ve eaten. BUT had to wait 3h to be seated – arrived before opening @ 10:30am. Tempura was really greasy, all of them, but their ingredients are very high quality – pork was good, cheese was good, bacon was really lean and meaty, smoked, great taste, but again, greasy tempura fry. Now talking about the staff, specially the guy who handles the line outside, they’re really unclear and don’t care about the customers. Almost like they don’t want to serve you. Summing it up: The Udon itself is great. Everything else is debatable. It’s also very pricey for Udon. $3000~ per person. It’s a lot of hype in my opinion.
Ernesto P — Google review
This Udong restaurant is a hot place in Shinjuku now. I expected Udong to have a chewy texture; however, it was not as chewy as I expected. This is the reason why only tourists are lined up there. I waited about 2.5 hours after I registered. When I registered, the suggested time was about 70 minutes, but without any explanation, the wait lasted more than 2 hours. It has only six counters and two tables, seating up to 6 people. I will not visit here again.
Suk-Hwan L — Google review
Arrived 5:30pm on a Tuesday. Waited 15 min and sat at a table for 2. Staff came out and guided each step, brought menus, and took orders before we even sat down. Best shrimp tempura we’ve tried in Japan so far due to its texture & seasoning, absolutely delicious. First time my fiancé finished his soup and mine. Definitely get the one with soup & beef. Simple but out of this world. Udon is made fresh

Udon noodle restaurant
Restaurant
Udon Maruka is a renowned udon restaurant in Tokyo, owned by a former chef of the popular 'Yamagoe Udon.' The noodles are praised for their authentic flavor and aroma, made with high-quality iriko dashi. With over 20 types of udon on the menu, including unique variations like 'Kamatama Calpis Butter Udon,' there's something for every palate.
Excellent udon and soup. Ordered the beef udon, great amount of good yummy beef too. Wonderful price. The shrimp tempura was also wonderful, will order it again!

とてもおいしいです!From Canada! The best udon I've ever had in my life. Waited about 30 minutes in line and ordered a niku udon with all sorts of tempura on the side for around 1600 yen. Words don't do this bowl of udon justice. It was generously topped with bonito flakes, tons of meat, and a very flavorful broth. The tempura is another story of its own... some of the best I've ever had in my entire life! Although a bit pricey, they are huge pieces of tempura and packed with flavor. I've never had such a juicy shrimp tempura until now. The staff are also kind and accomodating. There is an English menu and they even let us stay after closing mid-day. I HIGHLY recommend visiting Udon Maruka. I will be coming back every time I'm in Tokyo.
David P — Google review
I had the best udon ever at this restaurant! There are a lot of people eating there so you might queue, but everyone eats quite quickly so you don't wait that much! So it's not really a place you can linger but the food is really worth it. I wanted to go a second time but unfortunately it was closed, too bad! Would still recommend and I'll try to go again once I'm back in Tokyo to try their tempuras!

A famous udon place in Tokyo. They are the top few ranking udon restaurant in tabelog. Basically is a must try place in terms of udon. We arrived at the shop around lunch time. And already have 20-30 people lined up waiting to be seated. So we waited for about 15mins to get in the shop, while waiting the staff would take your order and speed up the process. We ordered 2 cold udon one is a dipping udon. Just dip the udon into the sauce and simply mix up with some scallions. Which gives a refreshing flavour The other one is udon with cold soup. It is great too, the soup is refreshing, clear and you won’t see any oil on the soup which is very good. The udon texture is wonderful, chewy cooked just on point Overall is a really great place for udon. A recommended place to try in Tokyo!

Dining Experience @ Udon Maruka. . Founded in 1969, Udon Maruka is known for an unwavering dedication to making Kagawa-style udon noodles. . Their Niku Udon No Onsen Tamago / Beef Udon Noodles With Soft Boiled Egg (JPY ¥950) was delicious, with a generous helping of tender simmered beef and yellow onions, fresh green onions, and wispy katsuobushi / dried bonito fish flakes. . Served over freshly made chewy udon wheat noodles, thick with a gentle chew. The soup / broth is robust and tasty.
Ivan T — Google review
One of the best udon’s I’ve ever had in my life. Came after finding it on Google maps, the reviews were not lying. Expect to wait, but not too long as the line moves fast. They take your order while you’re waiting and they serve it to you once you’re in the restaurant. The food is incredibly delicious. The service is amazing and all at an incredible price would definitely recommend.
Jacob G — Google review
came here to get curry udon, and they said they weren’t serving that, so i asked to get their niku udon, and they also said they weren’t serving that. both are permanently plastered on their front wall, and it was an hour after they opened, so i don’t think they were sold out. that was pretty disappointing. i instead got another udon but it was just ok.
Sonia G — Google review
IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!!! Super down to earth and local. Cute and cozy store where everyone just eats and leaves. They take order while you’re in the line so you pretty much get the food a few minutes after you get seated. Most people here get a udon + a tempura (4 kinda for choice), I got the fish cake and it’s absolutely the best I’ve ever had. AND SO AFFORDABLE. Come visit!!!

Udon noodle restaurant
Godaime Hanayama Udon Ginza is a traditional-inspired space that offers wide Himokawa udon noodles, served in soups and with tempura. The main branch of Hanayama Udon is situated in Gunma Prefecture, and their Tokyo branch opened in 2017 after winning Japan's biggest Udon Competition three times consecutively. Their specialty dish, Onihimokawa Udon, is uniquely flat and wide-shaped with exceptional taste.
Found this spot off of social media! The thickest of noods! Personally ordered: deep fried shrimp with mitsuba (450 yen, ~$3 USD) tempura assortment udon set 1950 yen, ~$13 USD) a few beers Huge fan of the texture of the noodles. The tempura was fried well too. Although there might be a line...it moves relatively quickly. Total ended up being $22.72. You pay as you leave and they are super efficient splitting up the bill in the end.

Here’s a natural English translation of your review-style text: ⸻ The restaurant’s location was quite good, and I liked that the reservation system worked via QR code. We were able to shop elsewhere first, then scan the QR code around 10:20 a.m.—before the 11 a.m. opening—and were seated around noon. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the dining area was cool and comfortable. Personally, I found the udon a bit bland, but the tempura rice bowl (tendon) was excellent. Next time, I’d definitely like to try the tendon as a standalone dish. Overall, the staff were friendly, and the cozy, relaxed vibe of the place was a real highlight.
Kangil R — Google review
I think the feature of this restaurant is the thick noodles you dip into sauces and enjoy. We grabbed a ticket early and wait 2.5 hours which was okay. We got to shop and walk around Ginza while waiting and there's lots to do in the area. An email is sent before you're up so there is some allowance. My noodles were good and extra size up is free. I had sesame sauce (??) and soy/wasabi/green onion. My set came with chirashi which was as quite good. The tempura is also very well prepared.
Charles C — Google review
We were in the area and decided to stop by this place around 2:30 p.m.. There was a small queue, so we lined up, and about 15 minutes later, we were lucky — the hostess told us they had just enough noodles left for us as the last customers! There were still a few people waiting behind us, so we definitely avoided the long wait many other reviewers mentioned. We ordered two lunch sets for two people and a kid, and the flat noodles were incredibly smooth with a great chewy texture. I found that you can really appreciate the flavor of the noodles when eaten cold and dipped in the sauce, though I personally prefer them in the hot broth. The lunch set also included tempura with rice, making it a very filling and satisfying meal. Overall, we were really glad we stopped by — great experience and perfect timing!
Di L — Google review
After waiting for this moment!! We now know the trick to get it is…come to que up at 9:20-9:30 then you will be the first group to get the waiting ticket at the machine at 10:00am!! Then u stroll around wait for 1 hours then yes!! You are the first group to taste this. What I can say is worth the wait!!! From the bottom of non-Udon eater - i love it so much and I bet those who love Udon will feel u found ur soul 😇 Beware at 11:03 the lunch waiting ticket is sold out!!! So u have to wait another day We try both hot and cold udon set and both of them are good. But if u r not Udon eater i recommend hot set
Ormy A — Google review
Ordered Ginza set for dinner, had both cold and hot udon and both were amazing, chewy and hearty, best I ever had. The cold one definitely is the best with idk how to describe this texture but I was very sad when I finished it. I didn’t see much review on their tempura but it was also really great! I’d recommend tempura to have with udon when u r here. We reached at 535pm, waited abt an hr to get in, our queue number was 21. They closed the queue at 620pm which was super early so please be mindful of the time.
Yoomi O — Google review
Get here before opening—you won’t regret it! At Godaime Hanayama Udon Ginza, you can take a queue ticket before the restaurant opens and receive an alert to return when it’s nearly your turn. I arrived 30 minutes early and still waited 3 hours to be seated—was it worth it? Absolutely. This was the best udon I’ve ever had. We ordered the Ginza Set, which included cold Oni-Himokawa with soy dipping sauce, hot udon in a broth-based soup, and a perfectly fried tempura platter with a variety of vegetables. We also tried the Oni-Set, featuring hot Oni-Himokawa with Mugibuta pork in broth. My favorite was the cold Oni-Himokawa—the wide, flat noodles had an incredible texture and satisfying bounce. English menus with photos made ordering easy, the seating was spacious and comfortable, and the service was attentive and pleasant. Overall, an outstanding dining experience—truly worth the wait for unforgettable udon.
Jessica M — Google review
This must have been my 5th times dining here, not sure why I have yet to write a review until now. Come around 930am and get in line if you want to eat first round. I came today at 950am and I was #22 on the ticket system. I strolled around Ginza for 57mins before my turn was called, which is pretty efficient for them (I have waited 2+hrs on the ticket system before being #61). They will put up a sign out front when the noodles are sold out for the day. Wonderful meal and quick service. You cant go wrong with any of their options!

Soba noodle shop
Shodai is a Japanese restaurant known for its authentic cuisine, particularly its Udon and Soba noodles. The eatery gained online fame in 2017 when its Udon dish became a viral sensation for being incredibly photogenic. Despite its appearance, the whipped cream-like white sauce covering the Udon is actually a potato-based sauce with no sweetness to it. When mixed with the noodles, a brown curry sauce is revealed, creating an unexpected flavor combination.
Their sweet potato foam cream udon is their most famous dish. Its uniqueness is its draw, but also just tastes great contrasting the subdued, slightly sweet flavors of the foam against the rich, savory beef broth. The tempura here is also some of the best I’ve had in Tokyo, the experience made even richer with the fine quality salts from around the world. I didn’t have to wait when I went Sunday afternoon at 11:30, nor when I went at night on a weekday at around 8.
Paul Y — Google review
The easiest 5 stars of my life. I’ve never had flavours and textures like this before in my life. The fluffiness of the potato layer with the chewiness of the udon is perfect. If you decide to mix the potato into the broth, then you get a velvety creamy curry soup which you will definitely drink until the last drop. Another customer said to me this meal would be the best meal you will have in Tokyo and he wasn’t lying
Thomas D — Google review
One of the best meals I had in Tokyo. We each ordered the udon with the potato layer on top. It was so creamy and added an amazing flavor when mixed with the beef broth layer below it. Also, do yourself and order the fried chicken. It was so crispy yet moist and packed with flavor. Service was great as well! We showed up at dinner time as well and did not have to wait.
Jonathan D — Google review
Our first time eating here, it was awesome! Lucky we tried two different dishes. While the potato cream curry udon was delicious, the cold udon was also a strong contender. Will revisit to get the cold udon again!
Umang — Google review
Came here for lunch and waited outside for 50 minutes before seating. There is limited seating for lunch hours compared to dinner hours. The udon noodle was great and was the start of the dish. The curry flavor sauce has a tang to it which didn’t not like. The beef was tender, it would had been better if there was more of it in the serving and/or gave me the option to order extra on the side. Flavors profile is objective and subjective to each person, the flavor of this dish didn’t vibed with me.
Travis T — Google review
Went during a weekday for dinner and was seated immediately. They have an English menu available, so ask if you need it. The signature Beef Curry Udon with Potato Paste (¥1320) looked interesting and tasted pretty good. I liked how thick and creamy the broth was. My only critiques are that “extra spicy” wasn’t spicy at all, and the beef bits—of the few that there were—were dry.
_ — Google review
Very unique and delicious beef curry udon with potato mousse. The texture and flavors had me wanting to lick my bowl. Would highly recommend!
Justin N — Google review
Got the viral creamy curry udon and karaage. Udon was not spicy at all, pretty underwhelming. Cool/fun concept but probably not worth waiting in a line for. Karaage is solid.

Udon noodle restaurant
Restaurant
Daitsune Udon has a rich history, originating as a vegetable store during the Edo era and now transformed into a beloved homemade Udon restaurant by its fifth-generation owner. The establishment maintains strong ties with wholesale vegetable suppliers, ensuring that they serve fresh and delicious seasonal vegetables alongside their signature Udon dishes. Unique offerings such as Avocado Udon and Fresh Tomato Udon are among the popular menu items.
Local spot for a quick lunch. Udon noodles made from scratch in house and you can really taste it! Weekdays the place is filled with nearby workers on lunch. Weekends it’s the locals coming for a warm delicious udon with tempura. Great selection of veggie tempura. We came back twice in two days. Super friendly staff. The udon bowl comes from a small window at waist height and the tempura selection is on top.

We went 2 days in a row. Food was delicious and the owner was very nice and friendly, even though she does not speak much English, she tried her best to explain to us how to order and what they have. Love the experience and will definitely go back again.

A grocery store that has been in business since the Edo period runs an udon store. The soup stock and udon noodles are well balanced, and you will never get tired of eating them. There is also a wide variety of izakaya (Japanese style pubs) on the menu, so it is a good way to fill your stomach with something other than udon and finish with udon. This area is the tourist hotel district of Ginza, and I highly recommend this restaurant to foreigners who are tired of eating various kinds of Japanese food.

Locally authentic! We walked in pretty early and it was the right choice to make as it gets crowded even before 12 noon. You know this is a good Japanese restaurant when most of the customers are Japanese. Fast way of serving traditional food with some new ideas of side dishes! Definitely a good place to try! Super delicious!

It’s a lunch place. Pick a tray and the food of your choice at the counter. They can hand you the English menu (with Udon options) over the counter. Udon is very good. Unfortunately, the tempura can be too cold and greasy sometimes because it’s made in advance and placed on the counter for you to choose from (so pick wisely).
Anton S — Google review
Delicious udon. I ordered the ‘meat of spicy miso noodles’ which was a pork dipping broth - very tasty with a nice chewy texture for the udon. I also got the tofu salad but this was a bit uninspiring. This place is filled with locals and an English menu is available. Note they only accept cash or other payments via QR code - I got caught out with only my credit card! Went to withdraw cash nearby. Very friendly staff.

Visited here to try out udon. The noodles were so good with a perfect chew. I prefer these noodles over ramen 🍜. The chicken tempura was cooked perfectly. Only $475 yen for plain hot udon and $225 yen for a piece of chicken tempura. We had so much left over and they kindly provided to go containers. Staff is very nice and the restaurant is clean. They have English menus if needed.

Delicious udon place! The place look humble like Japanese hut. They have English menus so foreigners can come in and order. They have variety of udon and side dishes. The udon serving is big, ladies might want to order 1 and share other side dishes. Their tempura is pretty good and you can get tempura avocados here! 🥑 yes! You didn’t wrongly. And sweet potato 🍠 tempura. Definitely recommend anyone to come here!

Udon noodle restaurant
Japanese regional restaurant
Sato Yosuke Ginza Inaniwa Udon offers a unique dining experience with its specialty, the thin and smooth-textured Inaniwa Udon from Akita Prefecture. This type of udon is thinner than the usual variety and has been made by seven generations of the Sato family. The restaurant's tempura seiro udon noodles come highly recommended, allowing patrons to savor the smooth texture of the Inaniwa udon as it effortlessly glides through their mouths.
Really yummy spot for simple but flavourful udon noodles - loved the tempura shrimp set and the tuna set. Friendly staff and very well priced. There was a bit of a wait to get a table, but <15 mins and service inside is fairly quick.
Nandini M — Google review
The noodles inaniwa udon is very silky and smooth, but still retains a chewy texture. Unfortunately the part that disappointed me the most is the dipping sauces. They simply felt very watered down and tasted bland the flat. The tempura was fine, and nothing special. I came right before closing at night so there was no wait, but I keep seeing long lines during the day when I walk past. I think I would be quite livid if I had to wait more than 15 mins under the scorching sun for this...
Terence F — Google review
The feel of silky Inaniwa udon from Akita without having to travel there. If you're a lover of the craft and texture of noodles, or like cold noodles on a hot day, then all you need to work out is how long is the line and how much wait you are willing to tolerate. Towards closing is usually a smart time, but if the line isn't too crazy at opening that can also be a smart time to go. Generally people are spending maybe half an hour-ish since its not a big or complicated meal, so the turnover is steady. The restaurant space you see through the front to the right of the register is not everything, there is more on the left side of the restaurant with tables and small private rooms for 4 which they happily let 1 person like me take to keep the line moving. Cold udon has the same appeal to me as cold soba on a hot day, simply refreshing. The noodles are not thick and cook quickly, and yet have the desired firm bite of thicker noodles. This is the result of a long hand made process over 4 days. Wheat flour, salt and water are all that is used. Some of that texture comes from the soft spring water that came from under the mountain. A lot of it comes from the careful stretching of the noodles managed by hand over days and allowing some fermentation in between, and the final shape is not cut but is a result of that slow process. This silky smoothness optimises for nodogoshi, the sensation of it going smoothly down your throat. There's two sauces in the standard set up - soy/wasabi or sesame, I think the cold sesame sauce works better on a warm day.

Went around 7pm on Monday, queue moved pretty fast and we were soon seated. Ordered their signature cold udon that came with tempura and dipping sauces, and let me tell you this absolutely blew my mind. The tempura was fried to perfection and the noodles were amazing. Ordered the rice w chicken as a side and that was tasty as well. Overall a 10/10, would highly recommend to anyone looking for Udon in Ginza.
Wei L — Google review
Tried the cold slim flat udon because I wanted to see how well it paired with the sesame dipping sauce. The flavor was unique — the flat noodles perfectly absorbed the rich, nutty sauce, making every bite satisfying. The hot version, however, didn’t seem much different from what you’d find at other restaurants except the slim flat udon.
Dream L — Google review
Came here for a weeknight dinner few years ago . No queue was seated immediately but the middle age waiter didn’t seem friendly My friend has blonde hair but she’s actually half Japanese and me although a foreigner is fluent in Japanese so it’s really strange that in this type of setting he didn’t use keigo. As for the udon , it was okay 。 ordered the udon with two types of dipping sauce but I still prefer sanuki udon especially when it’s a Kagawa produce 😁 Might go back to this place if there’s no queue.

Randomly came across this spot on our Japan trip and love this place! The cold udon noodles were super fresh and perfectly chewy. They had different broths to dip the udon in and both were sooo good!! Great spot for a comforting meal!

Restaurant
Teuchi Udon Sumita is a cozy and unassuming eatery in the Kita area, known for its excellent quality udon noodles. It offers a variety of options including soups with tempura, hot pots, and seasonal choices. The vegetable tempura udon is highly recommended, with a rich umami-flavored soup and fresh, non-greasy fried vegetables. The oden menu is also worth trying, as the flavors explode in your mouth with each bite.
It’s been 7 years since last visit. Very popular Sanuki Udon shop in Tokyo, very reasonable! It was worth waiting for 40 mins!!
KO K — Google review
A very popular udon restaurant for the locals, queuing even on a weekday shortly after the restaurant opened. The udon was nice and quite a lot for a lunch set - in fact it was too much for me that I barely able to finish it. But I found the soup broth too plain and lack of flavour. The tempura was a bit disappointing as the crust was very dry and flavourless, so it wasn’t a particularly enjoyable meal when I tried to finish it up.
Yvonne T — Google review
A good atmosphere wafts in and out of the restaurant. The Kashiwa-tenpura bukkake is highly recommended.
T. G — Google review
It was a good quality udon place. Perhaps the best udon restaurant in Kita area. There are variety of choices, with seasonal options. I ordered vegetable tempura udon. The soup had a rich umami flavour with ginger topping served separately. Fried vegetables seemed very fresh, and it wasn’t too oily. I also strongly recommend oden menu as well. Once you bite the oden, you can feel the flavour spreading i your mouth. The menu is available only in Japanese. It might be a little difficult for foreigners to go.

(Translated by Google) I visited this place on the recommendation of an acquaintance. I'd heard it was so popular that there could be a line at certain times of the day, but when I arrived a little before 2 PM, there was no one waiting. It might have just been a coincidence. It's a very ordinary udon restaurant in a residential area. We went in as a group of two and were shown to the far right side of the counter. We ordered "Chicken Tempura Udon," "Tempura Bukkake Udon," and the "Oden Assortment," which I'd heard was delicious. Shrimp tempura, chicken tempura, and the "Beef Tendon" oden. These were incredibly delicious. I was particularly surprised by the beef tendon. The mustard paste on top was also incredibly tasty. It wasn't spicy at all. I had no idea what was in it. The udon had a golden brown soup with a strong dashi flavor and was quite chewy. The chilled version was particularly chewy. When it came to Kake Udon, it wasn't so extreme. I prefer fluffy udon noodles with little firmness, so I found it a bit tiring to eat. I'm not a fan of chewy udon. However, the soup was very delicious. I think they adjust the tempura serving time to ensure that each customer receives the freshest possible fried tempura, taking into consideration the orders of other customers. That's what I got from looking around. Perhaps it was because the shrimp and chicken were served fresh that I was so impressed. The ladies serving customers were also very nice. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is nice, so I think you'll enjoy your meal. It was a very nice restaurant. I plan to go again soon.

Good food nice simple flavour and the tempura batter is light and yum. We went as a family of 4 and ordered 2 large with extra tempura - apparently it is 1 bowl of udon per person but that isn’t stated anywhere. Once we ordered someone from the kitchen shouted across the restaurant that that was the case - after a 2 min explanation that we couldn’t possibly finish more food than we ordered the allowed us to proceed into the restaurant. While the udon was good, service can definitely be improved and a simple sign hung to avoid tainting the experience of otherwise authentic udon.

A perfect hole in the wall for finding fast, late night udon. Lots of cold options, fewer hot options, fairly basic menu. I know this because they have an electronic tablet menu that is easy to use and available in English, which was very helpful for me. They also offer payment via credit card tap. This place is fast, no frills, and hits the spot for < ¥1000. This is not gourmet excellence. It’s the right kind of grubby. This is Blade Runner vibes when it’s pouring outside.

Love this little hole in the wall shop, it’s standing only and will allow about 10 people at a time to eat. I went back in 2019 and finally made it back in 2024 and it was as good as I remembered. You order from a ticket machine outside which in 2019 was strictly in Japanese but now they have an electronic one with English! Prices are so reasonable and the udon is delicious, the broth, the tempura chicken is juicy. Can’t wait for my next visit to come again

WOW! A pleasant surprise and adventure of the palette. Never really been a fan of udon or even a cold one but, my god, this is so damn good! A no fuss unassuming eatery that is patronized by many salarymen. It's so affordable that I ordered a large portion and didn't even hit the 1k yen mark. Tried the hot soup noodle as well and I can say that the cold one is better but the hot is pretty much a preference during cold weather days

Got seated right away at lunch, no line. It was a bit tight of a space to sit but it was alright. I had the Udon soup lunch set, and perhaps it was my english that mixed up the order but I don't think so - the udon broth didn't really... taste anything? Again, maybe I ordered wrong, but I was a bit dissapointed. The tempura was really really good tho! And the mochi was alright.

Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Souhonten is a historic tempura restaurant that has been serving delicious tempura since 1923. Located in an old-fashioned building near Shinjuku Station, it's the largest outlet of Tsunahachi and offers both table and counter seating. The atmosphere is traditional and cozy, perfect for enjoying a meal. The restaurant's original location maintains its old-school charm with battered wooden premises.
Simply the best tempura I have ever had. The batter is so light that it's actually translucent. The chef is an exceptional artist. The seasonal vegetables are sourced from a small family farm. Everything is of superior quality. Reservations required. It is part of the Tsunahachi chain but a thousand times better than the other stores.

Came across this authentic looking restaurant with no queue so we gave it a try. Tempura shrimp cooked from live shrimp right in front of us, with perfect light crispy batter, remarkable. Fried fish and stuffed mushrooms both delicious. I ordered two sashimi, portions were generous and tasted fresh with natural sweetness. Service was great, would recommend.

This place is the real deal. Classic Tokyo tempura-ya. Quality ingredients. Solid seasonal selection. Killer atmosphere. Lovely people. Multiple counters and dining areas. And all at a very fair price. Don’t miss out on a pre-tempura appetizer of sashimi. Their fish is always excellent.

Consistent and delicious. One of the oldest (102 years) establishment in Shinjuku area, their insistence on freshest ingredients sets them apart from ordinary touristy tempura places. Nostalgic old building with ancient artifacts. Counter seats are the best to see the food preparation if you are willing to wait. Only drawback was the feeling of being rushed as their service was hurried and the atmosphere is like a fast food joint.

Fūunji is a bustling ramen shop known for serving some of the best tsukemen, or dipping noodles, in the world. The creamy blend of chicken soup and fish powder creates a thick, gravy-like texture that perfectly coats each bite of ramen. Chef and owner Miyake-san continues to impress patrons with his culinary skills at this hole-in-the-wall establishment.
Very good tsukemen restaurant. My friend and I ordered the largest portion of noodles you can probably order in one sitting, and it seems like you can even add more later if you want. The noodles in the middle of the stack were a bit on the colder side, but the dipping sauce was extremely flavorful and made up for it. The female staff member in picture who helped us was very kind, and watching the whole team work was honestly impressive. Everyone was professional, efficient, and clearly knew their roles, working together smoothly even in a small, tightly spaced restaurant. The food was great, but seeing how hardworking and dedicated the staff were made the experience even better.

Honestly amazing, and 100% worth a visit! I went pretty early, the queue formed about 15-20 minutes before opening. So highly recommend doing the same so you can grab a spot immediately when it opens. It's all counter seats, you buy a ticket of what meal you want when you enter - the machine takes both card and cash. I ordered their signature tsukemen, the noodles were thick, chewy and delicious. It's a decent portion, so only order extra noodles if you're really hungry. The broth itself is thick, full of flavour with chunks of meat and egg within. It's salty and everything you want and didn't know you needed in a tsukemen.
Lindy L — Google review
We accidentaly came to this popular ramen shop. But to our taste buds, it is not good and broth too salty. We don't mind about about the atmosphere, it is small and giving authentic Japanese ramen bar vibes which is good. The service was also okay, there were about 3-4 staff when were there and they seem nice but always on a rush. We came when they just opened and we didn't know it was popular, there were already a line after 15 minutes. There are ony 4 items in the menu, 2 traditional ramen and 2 Tsukumen (dipping noodles). There are 4 of us in the family and each got a ramen and none of us finished! We didn't liked it, as it was too salty. Maybe it is different on some other days? maybe it was the ambiance that made it popular? There are alot of ramen shops around Tokyo, maybe some are not so good, but definitely not too salty.
John G — Google review
I had an amazing experience at this ramen place. The ramen was incredibly hearty, rich, and absolutely delicious — truly one of those bowls that you can’t stop eating once you start. I visited during dinner time and there was a queue, but it moved surprisingly fast. Most people finish quickly because the ramen is just that good, so I only waited about 10 minutes. There were four staff members working that evening, all of whom were very polite, efficient, and pleasant. Their warm service added to the overall dining experience. If you’re looking for satisfying, mouth-watering ramen, this is definitely a place worth visiting. I loved every bit of it and would happily come back again.
Arul — Google review
The best ramen I had during our family's trip in Tokyo. Their noodles had the right firmness and it was not too thick nor thin. The broth it came with was rich and tasty but not overpowering. You have and option to have your order in medium or large which is good for people who eat a lot or less. Once you finish the noodles, you can pour hot water on the leftover broth making it a soup, making it a perfect ending to your meal.
Miguel M — Google review
CASH ONLY | 2 KINDS OF RAMEN | RICH FLAVOR You enter this quite narrow street and you will see this ramen place. You will enter and go to the machine to get your style of ramen. It appears the broth is the same for the ramen and broth in the dipping noodles. Then you will fall in line to get seated. When we visited around 5:30pm it’s filled and waited for like 20mins. We spent 25,000 yen for two orders of ramen and some few extra sides. This place offers traditional ramen and dipping noodles ramen. The broth was so rich and the noodles for ramen is mid thin and their dipping noodles has the thick noodles. The broth maybe quite salty for some and thick and so they offer hot water so you can adjust in a way. The place was good and plus the kind of show where you can see how they prepare it in front of you.
Jei F — Google review
Absolutely fantastic ramen - rich, flavourful broth and perfectly cooked noodles. Note the seating is quite limited. It’s definitely easier to get a spot if you’re dining alone or in a pair, as the restaurant only has bench seating and gets very busy. Solo diners are prioritised when single seats open up. There were two of us, and although we had to let three individual customers through, we got our seats as soon as a couple left 🍜

Tonkatsu restaurant
Katsudon restaurant
Located on the 14th floor of Shinjuku Takashimaya Times Square, Katsukura is a renowned tonkatsu restaurant known for serving the highest quality breaded, deep-fried pork cutlets in Tokyo.
Best tonkatsu I've ever had. I found the pork loin a little too rich and fatty. I preferred the tenderloin which is still moist and tender. They offer regular and spicy tonkatsu sauce. The big shrimp was OK -- nothing special besides its size. The tartar sauce that came with it was good. Sides were delicious as well. The lemon sour drink was cold and refreshing.
Manuel W — Google review
Surprisingly, the highlight for me was the miso soup. Don’t get me wrong the katsu was juicy, crispy, and tender, just as expected, and similar to what I usually enjoy in Japan. But the miso soup really stood out. It was unique compared to other places I’ve been to, with added ingredients like eggplant and more, giving it a richer flavor. I also appreciated that the shredded cabbage, miso soup, and rice were refillable. Overall, the price was quite reasonable and not too expensive. A satisfying meal!
Paula R — Google review
Katsukura in Shinjuku is a refined tonkatsu restaurant that elevates a comfort dish into a ritual of precision. The pork cutlets are masterfully breaded, fried to golden perfection, and paired with shredded cabbage and house-made sesame sauce ground fresh at the table. The atmosphere balances efficiency and warmth, perfect for both solo diners and groups. In a bustling district like Shinjuku, Katsukura offers a grounding pause—a place where tradition is honored without feeling dated. What makes the experience memorable is the consistency: every visit delivers the same satisfying crunch and harmony of flavors. It is Japanese comfort dining at its most polished.

They served very good katsu. Golden brown on the outside, juicy on the inside. Rice, cabbage and miso soup were all free flow. I loved the miso soup because of the many ingredients they use, making it a very different miso soup. One that is full of flavours, yet balanced. Service staff were also very nice and friendly and can speak English quite fluently. Would definitely back for more in the future.

The tonkatsu pork has a nice balance of meat and fat with a satisfying crispy coating. The seasonal chawanmushi is delicious and reasonably priced considering its portion size and generous ingredients. For rice, choose between white or brown rice. The service crew is attentive and quick to refill your tea. An overall enjoyable and delightful meal experience, highly recommend !

Best Katsu ever. The cabbage is amazingly fresh and comes with free refill (I had 4). There is always a line but it moves quite fast

Found Katsukura in Tokyo! I always visit Katsukura in Kyoto, and when I found out there’s one in Tokyo, I immediately came here. The quality is exactly the same, the service is also just as good—staff are very friendly and kind. You also get free refill of rice, cabbage, and soup if you order the set menu. Super happy they have it in Tokyo, it tastes amazing and definitely recommended!
Rico P — Google review
Awesome service and even better food! The katsu was fried to perfection, without being overly greasy or dry. The miso soup was likely the best miso soup I have ever had. The kids set was absolutely perfect and came with a delicious apple jelly as well as the kids getting to choose a small gift. Crushing your own sesame and making your own sauce was fun. The salad and yuzu dressing was very good as well! We ended up buying the dressing and the sauce to bring back home! Already craving this as I type! Also, they were very concerned about my kid's peanut allergy. Really appreciated the care they took in reassuring us that the food that we ordered was safe for the kids.

Sushi restaurant
Kyubey Keio Plaza Tokyo, located in the Keio Plaza Hotel, is a hidden gem offering exceptional sushi at reasonable prices. The English menu features various sushi courses, with the nine-piece Sino course being a popular choice. Despite its expansion, Kyubey has maintained its reputation as a top-notch sushi bar with excellent meals and personalized service. Conveniently situated just an 8-minute walk from multiple train stations, it's easily accessible for visitors.
Decided to visit this restaurant based on an article I found online. Really glad we did as we had a wonderful experience. Had lunch and thought it was fantastic value for the amount of plates and quality of fish we received. There were also many options available for my father, who doesn’t enjoy raw seafood. The chef that served us (Watanabe) was super friendly and professional and was even able to communicate with us in English.
Vicky L — Google review
We were told this was one of Tokyo’s oldest and high-end sushi restaurants, so we had to give it a try. While the Ginza location was fully booked, we managed to secure a reservation at their Shinjuku branch. We liked the traditional Japanese touches: waitresses in kimonos, shoes off at the entrance, and a modern twist on tatami seating (no kneeling needed—you sit comfortably with leg space). We chose the 10-course omakase, but I felt they served more than that. Every dish was exquisitely presented and incredibly fresh. The balance of flavors was spot-on. My personal favorite was the squid—it literally melts in your mouth. The shrimp was also impressively fresh, and the miso soup, packed with clams, might be the best I’ve had. The meal ended with a smooth cup of matcha tea. All in all, it’s not just a dinner—it’s an experience. While some of the sushi I’ve had at Tsukiji might rival or even exceed the taste, the artistry and atmosphere here make it a memorable and worthwhile visit.

Nestled in the heart of Shinjuku, Tokyo, this upscale sushi restaurant delivers an exquisite culinary journey. The chef artfully crafts each sushi piece right before the diners' eyes, offering detailed descriptions of every item. The staff exude warmth and professionalism, enhancing the overall authentic sushi dining experience.

Kyubey Keio Plaza Tokyo was recommended by the hotel where we stayed in our last visit to Tokyo; let me tell you that this was a great recommendation. Sushi was excellent, and the atmosphere and service were as well. We didn’t get to sit at the private tables, but if you make a reservation in advance, it probably will be worth it. This is a high-end restaurant, so plan accordingly. We didn’t mind because the experience was worth it. We definitely would be back if we were ever in Japan again.

It’s a great choice to take kids here. The service of chef and the staff are terrific. The chef is very nice and teach us the fish related knowledge. We had a wonderful time here!!

Kubei Sushi at Keio Plaza Hotel was hands-down the best sushi I had in Japan! The chef was super knowledgeable, and the whole experience was just amazing. Can’t wait to come back next trip!

My dad and I had the Omakase meal and it was an amazing experience. Staff were really friendly and it was amazing to see the sushi chef make your food right in front of your eyes. Chef was really friendly too and interacted with us. But of course the highlight was the amazing sushi that we had.

Excellent Omakase! One of the best I had! The sake Dasai is excellent! Came with my partners and they say this is a hard to book place. The chef speaks a bit of English but dish out really good toro etc. when the chef ask how you want your prawns, raw or boiled, I suggest you take raw and watch the meat moving while serving as sushi and into your mouth!

Tokyo Mentsu-dan is a popular spot for udon lovers, offering freshly made noodles right before your eyes. The menu board helps navigate the Japanese options, with red indicating warm preparations and blue for cold ones. The place offers a variety of toppings and broth choices, making it a pick-and-mix experience. While the udon itself is relatively cheap, the portion sizes are generous.
Pretty good stop for Udon. I’m not an expert on Udon but these folks were making it fresh as we entered (literally cutting and rolling the flat sheets to noodles with the help of some machines). Lots of options for toppings and choice of broth or curry. It was like a pix and mix! Food was really good. I had udon with a curry sauce and a spring roll. Very reasonable cost. Lots of local folks eating at lunchtime. We were the only tourists. They accepted credit card. We all ate well and thought the noodles and overall experience was good. 👍🏼

Got here at 3:20 PM for a late lunch. The staff is nice and friendly, the food is beyond average. Even though I didn't order their signature udon, the Hayashi rice still satisfied my taste buds. You can have green onion for free. Card payment available.
Mèo N — Google review
I ordered the hashed beef curry — it was too salty for my liking, so I added chilli flakes to balance it out. I also tried a tempura squid leg out of curiosity, but it wasn’t for me. It was cold and lacked flavour. The ordering system is simple: tell them what you want, take a tray, add sides, and pay at the end. Having an English menu made it easier. The place could use a bit of a clean, but it’s convenient for a quick, casual meal.

I first came here in 2018. In my recent trip to Tokyo, in September 2023, I revisited this place. It didn't disappoint. The udon was still as good as I could remember.

I randomly picked this place for food and turned out to be very good. Love the Udon and broth. Although the tempura is cold but can't stopped me enjoying a nice bowl of Udon.
Aiden H — Google review
The udon is relatively cheap with many variations to choose from. They have english friendly menu at the front entrance. The udon chef welcomes you at the front door. You must order first and walk towards the cashier. On the way to the cashier there are add ons like deep fried food and toppings which you can add to your udon bowl. I had the cold udon on a hot humid night. It was very refreshing. There were many seating for small to big groups. Felt like a great place to enjoy food by yourself or talk with new people. It was certainly a quick meal.

Be careful with the portions. The medium is way bigger than expected. The only disappointment was the tempura… they were always cold but that never stopped us from going there every week

Udon noodle restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Kagawa Ippuku is a renowned restaurant located in Kagawa, Japan, known for its delicious and affordable Sanuki udon. The noodles are made fresh daily using high-quality flour, resulting in a satisfyingly chewy texture. Despite being located in Tokyo, the restaurant offers an English menu and efficient service, making it accessible to international visitors. Customers can quickly place their orders using a machine with assistance available for those unfamiliar with Japanese.
Tucked away in no man’s land between Tokyo station and Akihabara, this is a must try for anyone keen to get an amazing bowl of udon. Not without reason that they’ve been in the Michelin guide for three consecutive years. The bukkake udon were delicious, chewy and exactly what you need after a day in crowded downtown Tokyo. You’ll have to add the shoyu, which differs from regular one not only by color but also by the hint of yuzu.
Sebastian W — Google review
OCT 2024 Ordered a small kamatama udon with butter and two sides which took about 15 minutes to arrive. The udon has a soft springy chew and the raw egg and butter added a rich creaminess which was quite tasty. There was also a side of soup stock to add little by little to change up the flavor; it was savory and slightly sweet. As for the sides, the chicken tempura was coated in a pretty thick batter and the meat was thin so it was not satisfying; and although the kakiage was huge, it was slightly over cooked and very greasy; tasted mostly of sweet onion. Overall udon was good at an affordable price but the sides were a little disappointing.
Barry — Google review
Kagawa Ippuku Kanda is a steady go-to spot for me. I usually get the curry udon with a bowl of rice, and it never disappoints—rich, flavorful, and consistently good every time. The only drawback is the seating arrangement; they tend to seat me right across from strangers, which can feel a little awkward. I’d prefer the option to choose my own seat. Aside from that, the food and service make it worth returning.

Two of us went at 13:00 on a Thursday and there was no queue. One of the staff members kindly helped us with the ordering machine. Had both the curry and meat udon, with the curry being our favourite. Food came within a minute of sitting down. Would definitely come back!

This is a Michelin recommended restaurant specializing in Sanuki udon. We came at 11:30 so no line. Ordered by the machine near the entrance. Shown to a long clean solid wood table. Passed by this small eatery one night after work, I was told by my Japanese colleague this place is popular. So I decided to visit on my last day at Kanda. It is conveniently located across Grand Central Hotel. I was so glad to chance by this shop. I ordered a small tan tan udon (which already includes an onsen tamago), an extra onsen tamago unknowingly and their 赤天. Food was served promptly, staff was attentive and warm. They are thoughtful to provide dashi for customer to customise their sauce. The tan tan meat sauce is flavourful and their shichimi brings the udon to new dimension. It was really yummy! I hope to try out their kake udon and ika geso tempura when I return to Kanda again. It was a wonderful experience dining in. Oh yes I went in at about 11:10am. Avoid the queues and arrive earlier 👍🏻

An English menu is available for non-Japanese speakers. Customers can watch the fascinating process of noodle-making while waiting in line.
This place is great for both quick lunch and supper. Cold Noodle : It was one of hot summer day in Japan, so I decided to get cold noodle with ume (plum) pickles with some tempura including sand bore, perilla, pumpkin and chicken. This combo is good for digestion and cure you from dehydration. Warm noodle : My frined got warm noodle. He said he likes gummy texuture. Tempura is decent and soup is great! He would go back again. Suggestion : Go there right after open if you are going for the lunch. Otherwise, you will be in line around 11:40 am.

Kuranosuke is a popular noodle joint in Takadonababa known for its thick, firm noodles made by hand daily using two types of domestic wheat. The warm and cold broth options are prepared separately from dried Kagawa sardines and mixed with soy sauce for a strong aromatic flavor. The bukkake udon is recommended as a starter, followed by the sanuki tempura or curry udon. Additionally, the restaurant offers Chanko Nabe with English menu options available.
Went to this sumo restaurant and it lived up to its name. The portions are big and it is delicious. The atmosphere is fitting and has sumo paintings on the wall. The staff was friendly. I had the sashimi which was very fresh, the stew with fresh veggies, and the yakitori, which I was told was free range from Iwate prefecture. Awesome Chanko Nabe and customer service. English menu for food was available. We were full with ordering each of the ala carte nabe. Shio(salt) nabe was the best flavouring with tasty beef intestines (cheapest and also the least amount of meat) that we had to order more of them--strongly recommended! The other two(shoyu and miso,) were quite salty for drinking. Approx 90k+ yen for 5 pax. Ordered each of the 3 ala carte nabe flavours and a couple sticks of kushikatsu. Adorable local udon spot! They had some of the best quality udon noodles I've ever had and perfect portion size for my very hungry belly. The wait staff didn't speak much English but were very friendly and tried their best to communicate. We got the curry udon and prawn tempura udon, both of which I'd highly recommend. The curry was not too thick and paired really nicely with the noodles. The prawns were jumbo sized and breaded just the way I like it- not too doughy and not oily at all! Atmosphere was a perfect quiet and peaceful place for lunch. 10/10 stars!!

Nestled in the vibrant area of Ikebukuro, Uchitateya is a must-visit udon shop that has garnered acclaim as one of Japan's top 100 restaurants on a prestigious gourmet review site for multiple years. This charming eatery specializes in Musashino udon, which stands out with its thick and chewy texture, offering a delightful experience distinct from the more commonly known Sanuki udon.
I came here with my boyfriend on a Wednesday night around 7pm and there was a short queue. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait more than 15 minutes and we ordered on a touch screen that had an English option. I was really craving something light and refreshing so I opted for the white miso udon stew with plenty of vegetables. It hit just the spot! Simple yet amazing flavor and you can tell the udon was handmade. I would say the udon is a bit more on the firm side although I just personally prefer my noodles softer, my boyfriend thought they were perfect! We also ordered the spicy red miso udon stew and that dish is packed with so much flavor and just the right amount of heat! Definitely something I recommend as we drank every last drop of soup! 10/10. Overall, the food was delicious and I will be coming back!

Easily a top Tokyo noodle! Amazing fresh hand cut udon noodles (watch them make in window). The noodles with dipping sauce is my favourite because focuses on the noodles (with udon water to turn dip into a soup). Spicy, duck etc options. But soup noodles also good. Queue appears but moves fast. Ordering vending machine can do in English. Super friendly.

If you are an udon lover, this place is for you. It is a quaint little place with very limited seating. It took 40 min just to get into the door and another 10 minutes to eat. The service was fine. Nothing really. To service. Because it was so small, it felt very cramped; but that could be the north american side of me. I am not an udon fan so there was limited options for me. I think each person that enters has to order a bowl, so that was inconvenient. I would not go back because I am not an udon fan, but would recommend it to anyone who likes udon and waiting in line.

We came here at 8pm and there was a short queue outside so you know it’s popular with the locals. It took nearly 20mins to be let in. Make sure you order your food while waiting in the queue. There’s a self-service kiosk just outside the front door and thankfully there’s English language option because some restaurants in Japan don’t have that option. The price is very good. The noodles came out in about 5 minutes. It’s a bit chewy and firm but very fresh. Broth is delicious. It’s an express type restaurant where you sit in, eat and get out. Came here close to 8pm at night and there was still a short queue outside. Order from the vending machine right outside the restaurant before queueing. Had the signature duck udon and it was comforting on a cold night. The portion was quite huge even for a small bowl so I don't recommend ordering the regular one if you have a small appetite. You can tell the udon is hand kneaded from the irregular shape and it comes with perfectly grilled eggplants in a refreshing duck broth. The udon belongs to the chewy type so you prefer a softer texture, then you might not enjoy as much.

Phenomenal Michelin-recommended udons. We went for a late lunch around 4pm and managed to be seated without waiting, but there is often a queue. The udons are freshly made right after the order, which you have to pay for by cash on a machine outside the restaurant. I definitely recommend the dipping udons. The broth is amazing, and both the size and the consistency of the udons are simply perfect. The prices are incredibly cheap for the quality of the food. A must-go in Tokyo.

Handmade Udon freshly made everyday right in front for you to watch. A local's favourite as apparently always a line. The Udon is chewy and a bit on the hard side, not like normal Udon. It's quite similar to Chinese handmade noodles. The white miso soup base we ordered has a lot of toppings and vege. It is also similar to Chinese cuisine. The portion is quite big and we only ordered the normal size. We had the dipping Udon and both the Udon and dipping sauce are cold. Overall it's not bad but not exceptional. The turnaround is quick so we didn't queue for long.

Quality and affordable udon that you must try if visit Tokyo. There’s always a queue but moving fast. It took me half an hour to finish the entire udon as the portion is quite large but most people finish in 20 mins. The udon are fresh cut. It’s chewy but I really like the texture. I have the duck soup udon and it’s so tasty! Will be back if I visit Tokyo next time.

Udon noodle restaurant
Ibuki udon is a popular standing-only udon spot located under the train tracks in Kichijoji. It's well-loved by locals for its quality udon noodles and delicious tempura. While it's a standing-only establishment, the quick service ensures that you can enjoy your meal in about 10 minutes. There are also two small tables available, although they may not always be free.
We stumbled across this place when visiting the Ghibli museum. It was 2:30pm but there was a steady stream of customers. There are only around 12-15 spots to sit or stand and eat in the restaurant, but the operation is quite efficient, so when we were there, by the time your udon (ordered at the kiosk) was ready, there was a spot to eat at. We tried the shrimp tempura hot udon (2 shrimp tempura and a squash tempura) and the special hot udon with all the tempura. The shrimp tempura was great, and the textures were on point since everything was freshly fried. The tempura weren't strongly flavored, so went well with the soup. We didn't love the fish cake tempura -- while I liked the herb it was coated in, I felt that there was too much non-fish filler in it. The udon broth was light yet savory, and the noodles (which they make in-house) were slightly thicker than I'm used to, but perfectly cooked with a nice chew. I enjoyed piling on the tempura flakes and the green onion. Overall I had a great time here and would definitely come back if I was in the area.

I was originally planning to eat at a highly-rated sushi place, but since it was in a mall, I felt a bit hesitant. Then I spotted a long queue outside a humble-looking street-side restaurant, tucked under a railway bridge—and I decided to follow the crowd. I'm so glad I did, because this turned out to be the best udon I’ve had so far on this trip. Be prepared to stand while eating, as there are very limited seats and most customers dine at bar tables. Absolutely incredible! The ingredients were simple, but the soup was unbelievably fresh and flavorful. You can customize it with ginger and spring onions, which add extra depth. But the real game changer? Pouring in a scoop of deep-fried silverfish—it completely transformed the broth. Mind-blowingly good! The udon noodles were thick, tender, and springy, with every bite bringing pure joy. The tempura was expertly fried—crispy but not greasy or salty. The chicken was juicy, the shrimp was huge, and the mushroom tempura was especially impressive—fragrant, light, and refreshing. What a satisfying meal! Simple, unpretentious, and absolutely unforgettable.

An excellent udon shop for a quick and tasty meal. It’s mostly standing room only, with a small table in one corner for two people. There are various kinds of udon to order, but they are known for their fried chicken version. The noodles were nice and chewy, and the chciken cooked with a light batter that’s not too heavy. The service was fast and friendly and the cost was reasonable.

We suddenly found this standing udon shop while strolling around Kichijoji Area (if you come to Japan, we suggest you to come around this area). There were various type of udon to order, and we tried the beef udon, with additional tempura as the side dish. The noodles were tasty, especially when we mixed with some onions and chili, the taste become much better. Besides the noodles and broth was so good, the price for the udon also was reasonable.
Aghnesia H — Google review
To be honest, I was not a big fan of udon before I ate here. And then I ate here. Could noodles be this transcendent? Could broth be so tender and perfect? Could so many extra topping and trimmings elevate an udon to levels I never knew before existed? Yes, yes, and yes. They make all their noodles from scratch (you can watch while eating) and they prepare the whole bowl right before you. This is the type of place I love to bring visiting friends, cause it's such a unique food experience! Mind you, it's standing only (with only a couple of seats in the back).
Paul Y — Google review
The real Japan, super authentic and super fast, you eat standing up as there are only two small tables inside and it’s delicious Very cheap too and a must try for the real experience as a tourist

Such a classic traditional quick standing udon shop. You order, get your udon, add your toppings, stand while you eat, and your out. I love this style of Japanese restaurant. The udon is amazing. The noodles are bouncy firm and delicious. Everything is freshly made. The tempura is all made fresh. Especially when it’s busy, everything comes out fresh and piping hot! I order the Maitake kake-udon (舞茸うどん), I also ordered extra 舞茸天ぷら. I wasn’t aware they actually have a double maitake udon (ダブル舞茸うどん). People must like their maitake 😂 Anyway, because of my mistake I paid a little more than I should have but, they also gave me a ton of maitake. Maybe if you order it separately as an extra item, you get more 🤔. I’ll just assume the answer is yes, haha. I almost burnt my mouth it was so hot. If you get a lot of extra tempura, I might recommend getting a small side dish and placing it on the side so it doesn’t get too soggy from the broth. This place is one of my favorite udon shops in all of Tokyo.
Y. S — Google review
This place was delicious! I got a tempura shrimp udon and it was amazing. The broth was super flavorful yet light at the same time. I added an onsen egg and it was so good. You order at the kiosk and they make your bowl in front of you. The place is small — it’s mostly standing but there are two small tables available at the corner.

Hatsutomi is renowned for its specialty dish, Kamaage Udon, a type of Udon that is served without cooling the noodles before serving. Originating from Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region, their Udon is notably thin and boasts a smooth texture that can be fully appreciated when slurped. Visitors have described it as one of the best dining experiences in Japan, with some opting not to leave reviews to keep this hidden gem all to themselves.

I never thought I will ever say this but this has to be one of the worst snack I have bought in Japan. Bought all their Marrons products (Since Marron season) and I have tried 3 so far. The Glazed marron, the marron madeleines and as well as the marron sponge cake. Unfortunately, it feels and taste like all the products are dumped in sugar syrup. (Translated by Google) This is Shikokuya, a long-established Sanuki udon restaurant founded in 1962, famous for being frequented by the late rock musician Kiyoshiro Imawano and Hakase Suidobashi (celebrity and former member of the House of Councilors). The restaurant is located about a five-minute walk from Shin-Nakano Station (Exit 1) on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line. It's along Nakano-dori Street near the Nabeya Yokocho and Tokanzakaue intersections. The sign reads "Handmade Udon Shikokuya." Under the eaves of the storefront are lanterns bearing the words Awa (Tokushima Prefecture), Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture), Tosa (Kochi Prefecture), and Iko (Ehime Prefecture). Beneath them hangs a well-worn noren curtain. This is one restaurant I've been interested in for a while. I visited for the first time just after 7 PM on a weekday. Inside, there's a U-shaped counter surrounding the back yard with about 20 seats. There's also a four-person table to the left of the entrance. The proprietress runs the place alone. There are six customers ahead of me. I sit at an empty counter. I order the Kakiage Udon (¥900). The walls are decorated with countless posters and even items not on the main menu. There's also a "recovery gift (hand towel)" from Kiyoshiro Imawano and an autographed card from Hiroshi Abe on display. The kakiage udon arrives. Shikokuya's kakiage is hearty. The kakiage has the firm texture of shrimp. The udon is pale, flat, and medium-thick. The noodle surface is smooth. It slides smoothly into your mouth with a slurp. It has a high water content, giving it a supple texture with just the right amount of firmness. Unlike the tough, chewy Sanuki udon, this one is soft and chewy. The soup is based on dried sardine stock and seasoned with soy sauce, salt, and granulated sugar, giving it a gentle flavor that you can finish even after drinking alcohol. Wow, it's delicious. Came in for a set lunch. Got spicy Udon with fried shrimp. It was filling and fairly priced. A matcha latte on the side. One of my favorite parts of Tokyo food is the set lunch, where you can spend around 1000 yen and fill your belly. This place is perfect for it. It's set a little bit off the street, so you may not rush in, but it's worth crossing the threshold. The udon was super flavorful, tender and chewy. The crispy shrimp breading soaked up the broth and made the tender flesh even more delicious. The staff was friendly and the place was welcoming. Give it a try.

This place is sooo nice and the waiters are beyond friendly. They have an English menu too! It is full of elder Japanese people, so you know the food is the bomb dot com. Just learn how to say “I want this, please” in Japanese! They don’t accept card, despite having a sign, BTW. So carry cash or have that PASMO on hand. I’ve been here 5 or more times in between class for a quick lunch. The food is piping hot (like be careful) but always fresh and delicious and delivers on quality WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT. Lunch said comes with a matcha latte or hot/cold coffee. I don’t have a pic, but I always get the curry udon with fried chicken (Tatsuta Curry Udon). DELICIOUS. Honestly, the food was nothing special. Waited over 20 minutes for it, and it just wasn’t worth it. The pork cutlet rice was average, and the udon had zero flavor. For 1,450 yen, you can definitely find something better.

Wandered in a chilly afternoon exploring the area that inspired Persona 5's Yongen-Jaya and discovered this cozy diner. Tried the set with Kitsune (seasoned fried tofu) hand battered udon + tempura shrimp with egg and both were wonderful. Staff are friendly and there's a English menu for foreigners too. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

My first oyakodon. Why do so few restaurants seem to serve it? Because it’s a take-out thing? Something you cook at home? In any case, very good. Small bowl of udon in soy broth, also very good (will get the udon set next time), a little block of tofu, pickles, and bonus iced matcha. Maybe a little much for someone who has to teach in the afternoon, tried to walk it off, but hard to complain. Friendly service. At 1150 yen, excellent cost performance.

Yakitori restaurant
Hajimeya Yakitori is a popular restaurant located in the Kabukicho district of Shinjuku, Tokyo. While Omoide Yokocho offers an interesting atmosphere for enjoying yakitori, Hajimeya stands out for its unique offerings. The restaurant is known for its toriwasa, which features chicken grilled on the outside but raw on the inside.
Loved the food here – really awesome yakitori. As a heads up there's no English spoken here. The various dishes we got were great, particularly the chicken ones. The rice ball was a bit boring, but overall definitely recommended.
Jake B — Google review
The food was solid, the vegetables were our favorite part. I wish they offered beef or pork skewers. Open late so definitely not a bad late night option
Ernest M — Google review
It's a cosy place and we sat at the bar where we had incredible service. All the skewers are either chicken or vegetable. They have a great range though and I had a really good time there enjoying the yakitori with beer. As a non smoker there were a couple of people smoking next to me but I didn't notice the smoke/smell so I wouldn't worry if it's a concern. Great atmosphere and we'll priced, we'll definitely visit again!

This is the best yakitori place I have eaten in my 10-day stay in Shinjuku. We tried the atsumi, arubatsubo, original chicken skin, tsukune, hatsu, and puchi tamato. All of the skewers were amazing especially the atsumi and original chicken skin where I had to get seconds and thirds! I'm in full regret that I didn't eat at this place until later in my stay and opted for a random yakitori place in "pee alley" on the first arrival here. There is nothing like this place back in the states, you won't regret it!
Hop — Google review
Went in there early and it is great. I had the omakase 5 skewer plus shitake mushroom and some sort of green chilly pepper (it is not spicy which is good) and they are right, skewers go very well with ginger high....delicious
Tina T — Google review
You need to pay an entry fee (3 euros) plus at least drink per person (5 euros). So, you're not eating yet, already spent 8 euros. Then you order yakitori, their "hajime-ya's choice". They show you two of them on the picture, but it will only be one by one... But don't worry, the price will be the double. No need to spend more time speaking about the waitress, which is terrible. Toilets here are really dirty. Can't be worse.

Really nice yakitori near the famous Golden Gai, everything is perfectly grilled and service was friendly. They do have English men, so it’s less daunting to order.

Udon noodle restaurant
Menchirashi is a trendy and cozy restaurant that specializes in serving delicious udon noodles, tempura, and cocktails. The modern and stylish interior makes it an ideal spot for a night out with friends. Despite being busy during lunch hours, the efficient waitstaff ensures minimal waiting time.
Food, service, atmosphere all on point. We came at a busy time and had to wait about an hour, but they sat our party of 5 across the bar and food came out shortly after sitting. What a fun experience watching them make the noodles. Good music playing in the background, vibes were excellent. The carbonara tastes similar to kraft macaroni and cheese.. delicious. Also ordered chicken tempura + raw egg on the udon which I liked just as much as the carbonara, if not more so. The prices are so cheap that we thought the portions would be small, but this wasn't the case. We ordered 3 bowls per 2 people (each a hot bowl + a carbonara to split with one other person), which turned out to be a lot to finish. Worth the hour wait, no doubt.
Doug F — Google review
The udon noodles were decent, a solid choice for a quick meal. It was really thoughtful of them to have a big fan to keep everyone comfortable while they waited in line. The food itself was tasty, though maybe not the best we've ever had. We're happy we gave it a shot and experienced it for ourselves. Honestly, if you're in the area, it's worth checking out.
Henry L — Google review
waited for about 2 hrs before we get seated. Good thing is that there’s virtual queue but we didn’t expect such a long wait. Suggest for others who want to visit, to get a queue number first before you take your time to explore the area. We had to cut short our time in the next area because we spent a total of 3 hrs (2hrs wait + 1hr ordering and meal time) on this. Even the queue for the toilet was quite a wait. Ordered the viral carbonara udon. Its really good, really creamy and buttery. Sadly it only had 3 pieces of pork. Loved the setup of the restaurant, you can see the chefs cooking your udon from outside. Was it worth sacrificing 3 hrs for my next area? Not really. But was it worth the try? Definitely 👍 Would love to head back again if the wait wasn’t that long.
Meow O — Google review
The carbonara udon was not worth the wait. We have ourselves to blame though - we came after seeing it so much on social media. Almost everyone was a foreigner - no hate, we were too. We got a number around 12:40pm, came back to join the physical line around 1:20, and got in around 2:10pm. The 1.5 hour wait was not the worst - I’ve had similar experiences in other big cities. They actually had a good system to handle the line. The udon though, was kind of a let-down. Because the noodles still had some water when they got into a bowl, the sauce was watered down and didn’t stick to the udon. You can see the remaining liquidy sauce at the bottom of the bowl. The flavour was just missing something for us. The handmade udon was chewy and good, but not in a revolutionary way. The best thing was the low price. We paid 4400 yen for 4 people. Personally, I wouldn’t come back or recommend to other tourists. Tokyo has a ton of good udon places.
Hien L — Google review
Went on a weekday at around 5:30 and waited around 40 mins until we were seated. The staff are very accommodating and take your order whilst you are in the queue. Ordered the carbonara udon and added an extra topping of kujo leeks to help cut through the more richer sauce. Udon noodle quality was very good and prices were very reasonable. I would recommend coming earlier for dinner as you can always expect a queue at this place.
Sahjin L — Google review
I heard this spot was known for its Udon—especially the Udon Carbonara—so I had to give it a try. I ended up waiting through two lines: a virtual queue for about an hour, followed by another 45 minutes in front of the shop. Once seated and after ordering, the food came out quickly. It’s also worth noting that the crowd here is about 99% tourists. My Japanese friend only took me because it’s a popular spot and I’m here on vacation — otherwise, they said they’d never try this place themselves. I’ll admit, the udon itself was amazing and hard to beat, but everything else was just alright. Don’t get me wrong—it was good, just not “nearly two hours of waiting” good. I’d revisit again, but only once the hype dies down.
Putt ( — Google review
Tried the viral carbonara udon. If you are a purist, then you will likely find fault with it being called carbonara but if you can look past that, it actually is quite a good combo (or at least for us it was). The springy udon with the cheese/yolk/butter combo along with the pork fat and the mentaiko was quite a creamy combination that had the slight umami, saltiness as well as the aroma from the pork fat. Very cozy interior, albeit it can get a bit noisy. The staff are busy all over the place but yet are still very friendly and helpful, especially when we are very clueless (probably due to the hunger). Insanely long queue, think we queued for a good 1.5h for lunch. Queue moves quite fast though, because about 5-10pax ahead they will ask for your order so that they can prepare in advance before you get seated.
Ng M — Google review
Menchirashi was absolutely worth the wait! I had the carbonara noodles with a side of tempura chicken, mushrooms, and shrimp, and everything was incredibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. The noodles were rich and creamy, and you can tell they really care about quality and presentation here. When you sit at the counter, you can watch them prepare the noodles from start to finish, which makes the whole experience even more special. The only downside was the wait time, about 50 minutes, but once the food arrived, it completely made up for it. If you’re not in a rush, this place is a must-visit for noodle lovers!

Foreign visitors can easily order using the machine outside and enjoy their meal within minutes. The restaurant's udon dishes are highly praised for their delicious taste and quality ingredients.
really good, but the master can't speak English, so just be patient, he will guide to to set the seat. the udon is quite delicious, just enjoy the food.

Fast as lightning udon, with english ordering machine. Plenty of local traffic which was a good sign. Nice although mild soup stock.

It's alright! Normal price but the udon noodles and tempura would be better if they were made fresh, and the atmosphere could be improved by setting the room up better- wooden dividers perhaps, wall displays, more cleanliness?

2.5 stars. Maybe my expectations were too high. Not the best but not too bad either. I recommend you not to eat the meat-radish one (the udon itself was alright and the seats were empty so I give it 2 stars). Maybe my rating would’ve been better with a different menu, so I just give it 0.5 stars extra for my hopes.

Pretty decent udon soup noodles. For foreigners who find this place via Google Maps, you order using the machine outside: 1.) put enough money into the machine 2.) press one or more of the food menu buttons (red color is hot dish, blue color is cold dish, yellow color is topping) 3.) press the red button underneath the menu buttons on the right to complete your order 4.) you get a ticket but the food comes so fast just walk in and it’ll be ready in a minute or two Don’t know what to order? Just get one of the four big dishes at the top. It’s what they’re know for.

Great udon than I've eaten for while. I almost forgot the taste of good udon and I came here with my friend. It had a little line up which is good sigh and we took a seat after 5mn. We order 2 udon wiche on came with tempura and other one with chicken tempura. It was really delicious. I will go back definitely. Great taste of dashi and noodle. If I live closer I will go often. Try it and you will love it.

Looks like a place with male guests are the majority. But udon was super delicious. I regretted I did not order in Large.

Easy to reach from the subway station and the price was reasonable. Big size of udon with fried tofu was ~4 euro and the taste was ok. One thing I would like to highlight is the service was poor or even rude in some ways. We were two people and only one person ordered as the other person wasn’t hungry. The chefs were yelling at us and asking one person to leave and wait outside in the rain as there was a strict rule of no food sharing. After negotiations and since we already paid, we managed to sit together, thankfully. And to prove that we didn’t share the food, aka the precious 4 euro udon noodles, we sat under their eyes so that they could monitor us. Btw, the wet towel on the table was from the previous customer. It would be nice if the restaurant can cleanup the table in a timely manner.

Ittekihassenya is a cozy noodle house in Tokyo that's highly recommended for udon enthusiasts. The restaurant offers a variety of traditional udon noodle soups and other classic dishes, including seasonal specialties. It's known for its delicious and creative udon creations, friendly service, and good value for money. However, due to its popularity, the dining experience can be crowded and reservations are required even on weekdays.
We had a hard time finding the place. It’s on the second floor and all the signs are in Japanese. But best miso udon I have ever had. The restaurant is tiny and they have a bar where you can watch the chefs create bowls of love. Highly recommend!!

A nice hidden spot with great udon! It is located on the second floor of the building so not that visible. While we were there, there were mostly locals, so I believe it provides quite an authentic Japanese experience. The staff was welcoming with us, and we also received an English menu. We observed that the Japanese menu had more items than the English one. However the food was great. We got one hot udon and one cold one, and the combination of flavours and how the noodles were cooked was great!

Came to this izakaya to enjoy some delicious “black” oden from Shikoku. Loved the rich broth and various oden combination. I had to also order the grilled chicken, which is perfect with some beer. Lastly, ordered some udon to finish the night. For an additional 100yen, you can get a standard size of noodles which is definitely the way to go, assuming you didn’t order too much beforehand like me. Great Izakaya if you are in the mood for some delicious oden and/or udon! Crowd Size: Very High (Reservation Recommended) Payment Method: Credit Card

Absolutely delicious! Thoroughly recommend the oden and udon both. Hard to find though. It's up on level 2 and there's no English sign out front, so keep a keen eye out.

This place was recommended to me, so I had to give it a try. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor and easily missed. It's a cosy spot, accommodating about 20 people in total. The staff is very attentive, they also have an English menu available for those who need it. We tried the pork soup udon, it was so flavourful with a kick of ginger. Perfect if you're craving a hot bowl of noodle soup. We didn't manage to have their oden, but it seems to be a top pick here. Highly recommend!

Simply delicious. The location is not easy to find. You need to look at one of the video (at the review section) to go up to 2nd or 3rd floor. I am attaching the English menu for your reference. Menu photo was taken 30/July/2025

We were looking for udon but the oden here was surprisingly good. We loved the oden soooooo much as they were braised so well. It was very delicious especially with a bit mustard. For the udon, it was quite good too. But the cold udon would be way too chewy as the udon here was a bit thicker. Hot udon is preferred.
Ching C — Google review
Food was about average with atrocious shameful discriminatory behavior displayed by a staff member seating customer which completely ruined me and my wife’s dining experience. We were waiting behind a japanese couple and the staff member(with a black headwrap) came out and let the couple in front of us go in and told us that there was “no room” bc we didn’t have reservations. We decided to stick it out bc something didn’t seem right. Another customer stood in line behind us, and we asked her if she had reservations, which she didn’t. When the staff member came out, he slightly shoved my wife and gestured the customer behind us to come in, which she seemed taken aback by. The customer behind us ended up leaving(probably bc she was turned off by what she was witnessing) and the staff member reluctantly let us into the restaurant. The food was okay, my wife ordered a regular udon, I ordered the udon with a side of shrimp tempura, we shared the 5 piece oden and had one draft beer each. The udon was underwhelming(tastes like packaged udon) and the oden about average(tendon was too chewy and not tender enough, radish overcooked, and the fish cake was boiled to death). Overall the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth and do not recommend this joke of a restaurant at all.

Wow. I haven't been overly impressed with too many izakayas in Shinjuku but this place was great. Didn't eat lunch and had late resos for shabu shabu so thought I would pop in for a quick drink and one plate of gyozas to tie me over and.... Couldn't stop eating....

Upon arriving in Tokyo, my family and I visited a restaurant around 2-3 PM, finding a quiet atmosphere with only a few other guests. We were impressed by the perfectly cooked noodles, clear soup, and crispy gyoza, making it our best meal in Japan. On our last day, we attempted to dine there again, but the restaurant was full. When we inquired about the wait time, the server simply stated that the restaurant was full and did not provide further information. This left us disappointed, as we couldn’t enjoy the meal once more. Therefore, I would rate the service 4 stars.

Service was fine. Ordered using our phones and food items on the menu had no descriptions. Drinks arrived quickly, and food arrived at various lengths of time. When we got the food (pretty slow for some items), it was terrible. Gyoza was worse than the frozen gyoza you get from somewhere like Costco, and the Xiaolongbao (swimming in oil) was inedible with other dishes somewhere in-between.

Real talk: Best izakaya in Kabuki-cho in my opinion. The various types of gyoza —traditional, garlic, fried, and even the cheese gyoza— are all delicious. Spice things up with the BEST chicken karaage you’ll put in your mouth (they leave a lot of the chicken skin on which gets deep fried and crispy, so good), along with a strong selection of noodle options and drinks. Speaking of drinks, in the Tokyo summer heat (39c/99f) trust me and go for either the ‘lemon tower’ or the ‘orange tower’ — basically a chuhai with the citrus drink of your choice. DELICIOUS and refreshing. I’m drooling just thinking of one now.

We just woke up from nap after checking into a hotel nearby after landing at 6am. Ordered two random items at the machine and waited a few mins before being seated. The waitress spoke to us in Japanese but realized that we did not understand her fully after giving blank looks. The chef/cook/owner? Came by and told us kindly that we will have to wait 10 mins, kindly translated what we ordered since it was entirely in Japanese, and then seated us. He stopped by after the dishes came and told us how to eat it. Both were very kind and we are thankful with the service and good, warm soup. Def hit the spot. We wanted to go back again before leaving Japan but could not due to schedule conflicts. Will def check it out again in the future

As I bid adieu to the bustling streets of Japan, there's one thing that tugs at my heartstrings like no other - the legendary Kashiwaten Udon. Nestled within the labyrinthine alleys of Uchisaiwaicho, Tokyo, this humble eatery has been my sanctuary amidst the chaos of the corporate world. Picture this: It's high noon, and the sun beats down with the intensity of a thousand fiery dragons. The Salaryman's stomach growls with the ferocity of a ravenous Godzilla, signaling the sacred ritual of the lunch break. And what better way to appease the beast within than with a steaming bowl of Kashiwaten Udon? Now, let's talk about the udon itself. Imagine strands of noodles as thick and hearty as the dreams of a visionary entrepreneur, swimming in a broth so flavorful, it could bring tears to the eyes of even the most stoic salaryman. And let's not forget the tempura - crispy, golden nuggets of delight that dance on your taste buds like a troupe of culinary acrobats. But what truly sets Kashiwaten Udon apart is its ability to transport you to a realm of pure bliss with every slurp and bite. It's not just a meal; it's a transcendental experience, a symphony of flavors orchestrated by the gods of gastronomy themselves. As I prepare to depart this land of the rising sun, my heart aches with longing for one last taste of Kashiwaten Udon. Farewell, dear friend, you may just be noodles and broth to some, but to me, you are the taste of Japan itself - a savory slice of heaven in a world gone mad. So here's to you, Kashiwaten Udon, the unsung hero of my lunch breaks and the true MVP of my time in Japan. Until we meet again, may your broth be forever rich, your noodles forever firm, and your tempura forever crispy. Sayonara, old friend. Sayonara.

Japanese confectionery shop
Dessert restaurant
Sanukiya is a long-standing establishment known for its traditional anmitsu and a variety of coffee drinks and juices. The restaurant is famous for its fresh, flat, whole-wheat udon noodles that can be enjoyed plain or dipped into flavorful broths like simple kake udon, mushroom cream, or spicy tomato and beef udon. The shop's location along the river adds to its charm.
It's a popular kanten (agar jelly) shop, but since many Japanese people also find kanten challenging, it might be a good idea to try it elsewhere first before coming here. The anmitsu, which is meticulously crafted, is clearly of higher quality compared to others, and its popularity is well deserved. Personally, I prefer the kuzumochi and find it tastier.
Haruna E — Google review
Lovely small Japanese dessert shop specialized in "Anmitsu". There are only a few tables but waiting seats are available in front. The recipe has been passed down for a very long time as it started in 1914. Run by very kind aunty and her staffs, the atmosphere inside the shop makes you feel at home. Take-home orders are also available as last schedule for seating is 4PM and last order is 4.30PM. Recommended menus are "Kyuuhi-mochi" and "Anmitsu". There are 2 main types of anmitsu: tsubu-an (mashed) and koshi-an (beans). I would really recommend this place for anmitsu lovers.

Udon noodle restaurant
Yamacho is a charming and welcoming udon restaurant located in Ebisu. The interior exudes a cozy ambiance with plenty of wood elements and natural light, creating a serene atmosphere. The menu features delicious miso udon with the option to customize toppings. Despite being a small, family-owned establishment where the owners primarily speak Japanese, they are known for their warm hospitality towards international guests. Visitors can expect prompt service and an English menu for easy ordering.
No English spoken but there is a simple English menu. Friendly old lady...and yes, this has to be the best udon I've had anywhere. Cool looking place...like a hole in the wall

So glad I found this hidden gem on Google Maps! I ordered the miso udon, it was absolutely delicious and comforting on a chilly day. The lady who served the customers was really lovely and adorable. She was prompt in taking orders and serving food. This is a really small and cozy eatery, which seemed to be popular among the locals. I visited during lunch time and waited for around 20 minutes for a seat. The menu was in Japanese, so I relied on Google Translate to communicate when ordering. Overall, food was excellent and I really enjoyed my dining experience at this local spot!

Situated in the basement 1 of a building that house Aloha hawaii western tonkatsu. The place is well ventilated despite being underground. Relatively spacious with a U-shaped wooden counter table which can seat 13-14 pax. A senior lady attended to everyone. She was friendly, curt and precise. Solo moves faster. Didnt need to wait in queue. We came here during lunch, and we were a small group of 4. So we had to wait for 20minutes. Easy to order. Pick - soup flavour between shoyu or miso. I picked miso. It costs 1000¥ for the noodle and soup base. Then I added on toppings of my choice seperately. I added 2 eggs, shitake mushrooms, pork, big fried tofu and wakame. Came up to about 1650¥ in total. Waited another 10minutes for the noodle. It was served pipping hot in a claypot. Soup was super flavourful and i find the udon texture special. Flatter and darker colour compared to the usual ones we get outside. Portion is also very very generous. Extremely full after. I recommend this place and i will repeat.

Delicious miso udon. The standard udon is ¥1000 but you can pick different toppings. I got an egg, chicken and tofu which was an addition ¥300. I arrived 10 minutes before it opened and was only one in line, by the time I finished my meal the restaurant was full. This is a mum and pop business, although they speak only Japanese they’re very accommodating to international customers. Worth trying if you’re in the area.

Cute little shop. The Buzjenbo udon was the dish I got and it was really really good. Although, ive never had “kombu” before it was a really cool experience and mix with the udon. Definitely recommend! Fire and cute spot.

I’ve had this place on my list for a while and was finally able to check it out. It’s an udon shop with a vibe that is more izakaya-ish. The space is cool with a fun little counter at the back where the kitchen is located. I went with the rolled egg (だし巻き卵) which was delicious (you can get a full or half size, but the half size was huge). I also got the house udon, which comes with aged tofu which was fantastic. It was sweet and just absorbed all the broth which explodes with flavor when you bite into it. The noodles were cooked to perfection. There are lots of options on the menu, so I want to come back. Service was fast and friendly. Go support this place and enjoy a wonderful meal.

Udon restaurant located in Meguro, Tokyo. It’s like a cafe rather than a traditional udon restaurant. Both hot udon and cold ones are on the menu, and I chose cold udon with raw egg and pounded yam. Very tasty and satisfied and, if you want to eat many, large size will be recommended.
Takayuki S — Google review
I used to live near here so when I was little, this place used to be a restaurant I always go with my friends after my ballet lesson. The dashimaki egg, cucumber and seaweed’s vinegar side dish, zaru udon, and cold kimchi udon are the best. The kimchi udon was added to the menu recently but I think this is the best udon I’ve ever had in my entire life. I still visit this restaurant on a special occasion even though I live a little far away now. Because it’s totally worth it.

Very different from commercial udons. This broth was very clean tasting, hints of ginger and dried fish. The kind where you can keep drinking the broth without becoming thirsty. Noodles were perfectly Al dente, irregularly cut so it should be handmade. A homely taste

The udon soup is different - clean, light with a deep dried sardine flavour. Ingredients used were also of good quality. Udon texture is perfect, enough bite and the right size. A hearty bowl of udon. Would return if in the area.

Shin is a cozy udon shop with limited seating but offers freshly made noodles and delicious side dishes like tempura and deep-fried tofu. Their signature 'carbonara udon' is a must-try, topped with grated cheese, soft-boiled egg, and bacon tempura. Despite its small size and cafe-like exterior, Shin's popularity never wanes due to its high-quality handmade udon noodles. The shop also offers an English menu for international visitors.
Lovely surprise off the streets of Shinjuku. Despite the language barrier, chef was accommodating and worked effortlessly to feed us. Good quality meat and toasted over charcoal to perfection. Highly recommend to give this place a try. They have chicken sashimi options too.
Natasha L — Google review
It's not the first time that I go to a yakitori place whose concept is to use a special race of chicken that is "chewy" (歯ごたえがある). And it's just not my thing, I like tender meat, especially when it's not particularly cheap. Of course, the course included liver or tenderloin that were to my liking, but it still feels a little bit overpriced. Also the first time we went there, the owner was kind of harassing his employee, who of course was no longer there the second (and last?) time we went there. The course included all-you-can-eat pickles. That we enjoyed.

I stayed at a hotel around the corner and needed a place close by to grab dinner. Walked by their open window and the delicious aromas caught my attention. I walked in and asked if they had an English menu... They did. I ordered the set course meal with the soup, palette cleanser and the 5 piece yakitori. I added another yakitori after the meal and the dessert. The food is delicious. The chef and his assistant were so nice to me even though they didn't speak any English. They brought out another English menu and used Google translate to explain stuff to me. I paid about 4,000 Yen for the food and a couple of glasses of Shochu. I thought it was a reasonable price based on other places I've eaten in Tokyo. Definitely recommend eating here if you're in the neighborhood.

I was also shown handwritten English explanations of each course presented. A lovely meal thoroughly enjoyed.

Don’t get put off by the name or the restaurant description if you are a female - as the food is completely wonderful and tasty by female standard too! I’d recommend getting the JPY1,800 omakase course which comes with four generous dishes (see photos). It completely fills your stomach. (Translated by Google) There are some stores that I've always wanted to go to but just can't go to. The right thing to do is to accept the invitation of such a shop immediately. ``Udon Snack Matsu Tomugi'' located at Komazawa University is one such restaurant. Before I knew it, it had become an introduction system, which made it a bit difficult to visit, but I was invited and was able to visit. Thank you very much for your continued support. The store is located a little east on Kan-Nana from the Kamiuma intersection. It's on the basement floor of an inconspicuous building, but once you visit, you won't hesitate to visit again. By the way, there is "Tori Beer" in the building next door. There is a ``udon'' lantern on the stairs going down to the basement. There's a sign on the doorknob that says ``We operate by referral only.'' Will we finally be able to open this door? There are about 10 to 11 seats at the L-shaped counter. There are menus on hand and recommended menus on the blackboard on the wall. The system is to write your order on a slip and hand it to Kon-san. I feel like I want to eat udon right away, but this is ``Udon Snack.'' Let's start with the "Atemori" (1,500 yen). Toast with beer (Akaboshi Lager: 700 yen). The appetizer includes 4 different types of today's specials. On this day, we had ``braised duck loin'', ``deep-fried Mexicali'', ``seared bluefin tuna cheek meat with ponzu sauce'', and ``strawberry and garland chrysanthemum with white dressing''. The duck loin was delicious as expected, but the best part was the tuna cheek. The flavor is so good that it's hard to believe it's tuna. And the strawberry and garland chrysanthemum salad was a betrayal in a good way. Other snacks we ordered were ``Tai Chikuwa Tempura (600 yen)'', ``This Week's Spring Rolls (600 yen)'', and ``Tori Ten Iburigakko Tartar (4 pieces 800 yen)''.The chicken tempura is the best, so if you have it, please order it.By the way, this week's spring rolls were beef tendon and rape blossoms. These were also excellent. It's almost time to order udon. The characteristic of ``Matsu Tomugi'' is that they are particular about the wheat they use. The wheat is different depending on the day, so you can enjoy a variety of textures and flavors. On this day, the regular udon was a blend of Nebarigoshi (Aomori) and Ayahikari (Mie). Harumizuki (Kagawa) serves hiyashi chuka. So, I went with the warm udon noodles and ordered the Ume Wakame (1,200 yen). And hiyashi chuka. This restaurant offers two types of noodles: ``straight'' and ``hand-rubbed.'' This hiyashi chuka was good. I used to be a straight guy, but I also like how he works with his hands. Since it was difficult to decide between the two, it seems they decided to offer Kon-san as well. Because it's an udon snack, you can enjoy udon noodles and alcohol as well. It was a nice shop. Very satisfied. (Translated by Google) I was approached by a certain drinking buddy and went to Matsu Tomugi, a members-only udon restaurant. ●What I ate on this day ・Assortment (Fried Mexicali, grated whitebait, roasted chicken, fried eggplant and parsley) ・Seared tuna cheek meat ・Udon gratin ・Assorted servings ・Seaweed grated soy sauce with Tsukimi soy sauce ・Seaweed butter kamadama ・Kasu chive (nabeyaki udon version for +100 yen) The shop's interior is run by the proprietress, giving it a homely atmosphere, and the background music is popular songs from the Showa and early Heisei eras. The location is about a 10 minute walk from Komazawa-Daigaku Station, and I wish it was a little closer to my home or work. Oh, I've become a member of this store, so if you want to go, please contact me.

(Translated by Google) I was invited to visit by a fellow gourmet. Membership-only udon restaurant. It's about a 10 minute walk from Komazawa Daigaku Station... It's located in the basement of a building just past the pedestrian bridge after turning around at Kamiuma intersection. The recommended appetizer and Nori Butter Kamatama are a must-order. Then share your favorite udon! Warm, chive leeks, melted seaweed and moon viewing. The warmth is so warm that you can feel the dashi soup. The melty seaweed Tsukimi has a great texture because it's cold! The one who ordered the kasu chives was a 30-year-old girl (lol) Also, there were two types of udon, so I had an assortment! This is also delicious! It seems to be kneaded with roasted wheat tea! Goes well with Japanese sake♡ It was so delicious that I became a member for 500 yen.

Unagi restaurant
Nakajima is a popular spot in Tokyo known for offering a Michelin-star experience at an affordable price. The set lunch special, which includes rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and a sardine-based main course, is highly recommended. Despite the simple atmosphere, the restaurant's unagi (eel) dishes are considered some of the best in the area. It's advisable to arrive early as there is usually a queue even before opening time.
The restaurant atmosphere is old and not very authentic Japanese, but the Unagi is grown in Japan and one of the best in this area. I frequent this restaurant for lunch.
Hiroshi Y — Google review
One of the best unagi in Tokyo. Decades of history and serves real Japanese ugani.

(Translated by Google) I received Miyabi for 5000 yen. It was delicious as usual. You can make reservations over the phone, and if you order your food in advance, you'll have eel served as soon as you enter the store. It might be better to think of fruit as a bonus. (Original) 5000円の雅をいただきました。普通に美味しかったです。電話予約は可能で、事前に料理も注文しておけば、入店して速やかにうな重が提供されますよ。フルーツは、おまけ程度に思ったほうがいいかも。

(Translated by Google) I went there for lunch. It had been a while since I last had the urge to eat eel, so I found this restaurant. The lunch menu had two other dishes in addition to eel. This time I ordered the Unadon Hanzo. The plump eel gave me nutrition and helped me work hard in the afternoon. Thank you very much. (Translated by Google) This eel restaurant has the atmosphere of a long-established establishment, where you can enjoy a meal in a calm, Japanese-style space. There are counter and table seats, and the interior is clean, but feels a little dated. I ordered the unaju (grilled eel on rice), and the eel was plump and had a fragrant aroma. However, the sauce seemed a little strong, and the overall balance with the rice felt a little heavy. The service was polite, and they were quick to refill the tea. The atmosphere was nice, and you could enjoy a quiet meal, but considering the price and taste, I felt it fell a little short of expectations. This restaurant is more suited to a relaxed lunch than a special occasion.

(Translated by Google) I'll be visiting again. The serving time is about 15 minutes, so it's early. It's grilled to your liking, but the rice is soft. The sauce has the feel of a long-established restaurant in Tokyo, and the flavor is not sweet, so it's not to my liking, but it's a very good restaurant for those who like it. The quality of the eel is of good quality.

(Translated by Google) A long-established store in this town that has now become valuable. The combination of fluffy eel and sauce is exquisite. This sauce, which has been marinated for many years, has an indescribable flavor and mellowness that goes perfectly with rice. Please continue this curtain forever. Thank you for the meal.

(Translated by Google) It was grilled slowly and carefully. It seems the restaurant has been open for 40 years. You could really feel the history. I spent a blissful moment eating the eel. (Original) じっくり焼かれていました。 お店を開いてから40年らしいです。 歴史を感じました。 うなぎと共に至福のひと時を過ごしました。
