Carlyle House Historic Park is a captivating destination in Old Town, offering a window into Alexandria's colonial heritage. The centerpiece is the 1753 Carlyle House, an elegant manor with lush gardens and intricate interior carvings. Guided tours provide insight into the Carlyle family's influence and the house's role in American history, including hosting notable figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
We took a wonderful tour of Carlyle House. Joe was our guide and he was full of information. We enjoyed the tour and hearing how the house was renovated and saved from being torn down. We enjoyed hearing about the reconstruction, seeing the original parts of the home, and furnishings from the colonial period. Highly recommend.

A wonderful historic house to visit. Built even before Mount Vernon and restored beautifully. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It is only a short walk to this house from the waterfront.
Rachel R — Google review
I got my Keys to the City pass from the visitor's bureau, which opened at 10:00 am. My first stop was the nearby Carlyle House, which honored my Keys coupon. I noticed that tours start on the hour. It was around 10:10, and I didn't want to wait 50 minutes. Without any special request, a personal tour was begun for me at 10:10. Wow! Geoff was a wonderful historian. I thought he must have a decade of experience, but he actually was fairly new to the property. The tour was informational. The house is well-preserved, and the artifacts were helpful in imagining the lives of the contemporaries. There was a slave sleeping quarters shown, and I would like even more information about the enslaved people who created the wealth, did all the building, and worked on maintenance. There was good information about the roles of women in managing the household.
John E — Google review
Great tour. A knowledgeable docent gave us a comprehensive tour of the house with early history of Alexandria and America.

Tour the house, our guide made it educational and fun. Totally recommend to visit the Carlyle house

Guided tour of the house or self guided (free) admission of the basement. Great stop for those interested in the local history.
Ben I — Google review
The lady giving the tour was nice and the house was beautiful. On the downside, the whole tour was about Carlyle’s family living in the house. His role in the local slavery business and him owning many slaves was not addressed ONCE. Not a single mention about the slaves living in the house, their storys etc. and what cruelty they had to endure at this dark point in time in the American history. Very sad and frustrating.
Jstn. 0 — Google review
I've lived here all my life, and this was the first visit to this piece of history. The house has been beautifully restored to the original time it was built. The docents were so very knowledgeable, which helped to bring the house to life.

Nestled at the intersection of Prince and Lee streets, the Athenaeum is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture that adds a unique charm to Alexandria's historic landscape. Originally constructed in 1852 as a bank, this remarkable building has served various purposes over the years, including being a Union commissary headquarters and later a storage facility for an apothecary.
We hosted a 50 guest wedding ceremony and reception at the Athenaeum in September 2022 and had a wonderful experience! It is such a beautiful setting. We used the gorgeous back courtyard for our cocktail hour at sunset and it felt truly magical. The staff are wonderful to work with and it is in the heart of Old Town near hotels, shops and restaurants which is perfect if you have a lot of guests flying in like we did. The art adds a fun, modern element and we loved the artists featured the month of our wedding. We are so happy we chose the Athenaeum - highly recommend!

Pretty open gallery. There were arts on display that were kind of like scrap collage. They rotate exhibits so could be entirely different when you go.

This gallery is beautiful, and the location is absolutely perfect to hold an event. I had a wonderful time dealing with the staff in preparation for an event. They made it so easy. The entire event went off, seamlessly in such a amazing location.

Loved DJing here ! Recently DJd a wedding here. They had the ceremony in the garden. Setup a small speaker and mic system. The reception was in the main room. I will say pack light because there in way to roll in your equipment. It's fine, street parking available. Our up lights looked great in the ballroom / event space. Nice venue

Small art gallery that also serves as venue for small scale weddings. Currently displaying Art Optimism: Focus on Climate Change and Sustainability. This historic building was opened in 1851 as the Bank of the Old Dominion. It is an example of Greek Revival architecture.

I would consider this more of gallery than museum. Nice and eccentric but quite old and not easy for a person with allergy. Currently have interesting exhibitions and nice location for being close to old town river front. Of course accessibility is out of window.

Gadsby's Tavern is a historic American eatery that was frequented by notable figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. The establishment, which has been in operation since 1770, offers a unique dining experience in colonial-style rooms. Visitors can dine by candlelight and savor menu items such as Peanut Soup, Hot Smithfield Ham Biscuits, Gentlemans Pye, and Georges Favorite.
If you're looking for a historic authentic experience, this place is a must. The outside of the red brick building caught our attention, and we decided to try. Inside, there was the Colonial charm. We sat down in one of the side rooms. Our waiter was quick and attentive. I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes, and my wife had lamb chops. The food was delicious. As it started getting darker outside, there was a warm, dark ambiance to the room. It felt like stepping back in time. The place is a must if you're visiting Alexandria, a place that exceeded our expectations and will leave a lasting impression on us.

Fantastic food in a cool environment, service was slow, waitress could have been friendlier, you don’t really get any information about the history, at least not at the time we went. Took way too long to get service between courses and upon completing. Also it’s quite humid and warm on a summer day. Definitely worth it for the food and historical value, though the prices are a bit high. Peanut soup is fine, clam chowder is solid, George Washington’s favorite is fantastic.

Old and rustic place with great tasting food!! 😋 Doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food tastes really really good. This place is older than… it’s old! but it is worth a try! 👍🏻

Beautifully staged event for the American Friends of Lafayette’s penultimate event of the 13 month Bicentennial Farewell Tour. The menu was divine and delicious - from the cocktail hors d’oeuvres to the dinner menu and dessert. Beautifully executed. Thank you AFL & Gretchen Bulova, Historic Alexandria! ❤️⚜️🇾🇪⚜️🇺🇸❤️

Such a vibe. Oldest bar in Alexandria. The history is cool. There’s no sitting bar but I would still recommend sitting down for a cocktail. The cocktail menu is good. Very Washington. There was a group of people dressed up in colonial garb celebrating something while we were there so that was neat
Cassie S — Google review
Of course you come for the tavern atmosphere but the filet—amazing. So tender and flavorful with crispy potatoes and asparagus. My husband said the trifle dessert was also delicious.
Karen F — Google review
Sunday brunch was good, but the interior can be slightly improved. I sat by a window where a semi-dried dead lantern fly was flopping around thr window sill with AC wind😂. Also had only one waitress working for 6-8 tables at a time, so the service was a bit slow.
Joanna K — Google review
Went here 30 years ago with my parents and it was an incredible dinner experience. Went again last night and the servers weren't friendly, the drinks weren't good, and some of the food was good, but not all of it. We should have left it alone with the memory from 30 years ago but it was worth a try. Seems like it has new owners that don't care. Sad to say very disappointing.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington, featuring an ornate hall, museum, and observation deck. Constructed between 1922 and 1932, the memorial's major interior spaces were left unfinished until after World War II. The building project brought together independent Grand Lodges of states and territories in a rare initiative among freemasons with national scope.
Such an amazing place. I saw this tower from my hotel and had to check it out. I figured the tour just took you up to the observation deck but there was so much more. Every room on every floor was packed full of history, art and architecture. Such grand spaces, only pictures can describe.
Jay S — Google review
Very Clean. Affordable tours. Great view at top. If you like architecture, there is plenty to see and learn on first and second floor. You can see and tour all in about 3-4 hours. For the history buffs, a lot of insights can be learned from the tours, specifically on the upper floors. 2 Active lodges are located here. Solve the elevator mystery!
Pepe L — Google review
Bummer of a time today, as I was very excited to explore and learn about Masons and GW’s involvement. Instead of learning about what Masons are and how meetings work and what their focus is, and how and why GW got involved, we were simply shuffled to each floor and told to look around. Each floor was vastly underwhelming, only a few notable pieces, such as a desk “thought to have been used by Washington.” They have a strand of his supposed hair, which is a big highlight apparently. With little explanation, we looked at bizarre costumes various masons and affiliate groups wear. View was nice, for $20 a hard pass. Wildly weird time. Wife is convinced this place is haunted. We live locally… any visitors reading this, skip unless you’re a Mason.
Devin O — Google review
Such a beautiful and historic landmark! The George Washington Masonic Memorial stands proudly over Alexandria and offers an amazing view from the top. The building itself is stunning, and the guided tour gives a lot of insight into both George Washington’s life and the Masonic history behind it. Peaceful, educational, and very well preserved — definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.

The George Washington Masonic Memorial @ Alexandria is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington who was a Masonian himself. It was built during the period 1922-26 and offers a fascinating look at the history of Freemasonry. The tallest structure in the DC region, the top of the tower offers a panoramic 360 deg view of the DC region, the Potomac river and the town of Alexandria. It is advisable to take the guided tour as access to the top of the tower and use of elevators is aided by the staff
K M — Google review
Awesome! Loved it!! Wonderfully modern and air-conditioned, so makes for a great stop in the summer. Lots of George Washington artifacts, not just Masonic related. Although the Masonic history and chambers were really cool! Tour was $20/ea for 1 hour guided. Our guide, José, was fantastic! Very informative and such and interesting place. About 10 in our tour group. Book online ahead of time to guarantee entry. Ample free parking. It's rentable for events. Cool old "magical" elevators and don't forget the observation deck! The view is spectacular! I can't believe this place wasn't just crawling with people, but it was pretty quiet. Tour tickets grant you access for the entire day, so stay alls long as you like. Don't miss the clock that sat at Washington's bedside when he died. The attending physician cut the weight to mark the time for eternity.
CC — Google review
Great views. Museum rooms are put together rather well for being a Masonic temple. Neat artifacts and great tour guide. Worth a visit if you are in old town but the price for the museum is a bit excessive.

In the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, lies the historic Alexandria City Hall. This iconic building, also known as the Alexandria Market House & City Hall, was reconstructed in 1871 after a fire destroyed the original structure designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The steepled tower and European Second-Empire style architecture make it a standout landmark in the area.
The Pan-African Flag flies proudly over Alexandria’s City Hall, a former site of the domestic slave trade from 1828 to 1861. During this period, Franklin and Armfield, the largest slave-trading firm in the U.S., operated from a house on Duke Street. They purchased enslaved individuals at low prices in the Upper South and sold them at higher prices in the Lower South, trafficking thousands from Alexandria. The Pan-African Flag now symbolizes a retelling and reclaiming of history, representing the diaspora and the bold spirit of African descendants. Similar to the African American flag, the Freedom House Museum, located at 1315 Duke Street, has undergone its own reclamation. Once the headquarters of Franklin and Armfield, it now commemorates the lives of the enslaved people trafficked through Alexandria and celebrates their resilience. Alexandria’s era of domestic slave trade concluded in 1861 when Union soldiers advanced into the city. By 1864, Alexandria, remaining loyal to the Union, witnessed a constitutional convention that abolished slavery in this part of Virginia.

The Alexandria City Hall, also known as the Alexandria Market House & City Hall, is a building in Alexandria, Virginia, built in 1871 and designed by Adolph Cluss. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Alexandria City Hall was built on the site designated for the market and city hall when Alexandria was founded in 1749. Alexandria City Hall is the square’s backdrop, with beautiful brick-walled historic architecture and a clock tower. It is open to the public and located above a parking garage. Waterfront Park and Torpedo Factory Art Center are nearby tourist attractions. It's a perfect little park with a water fountain, making it a great place to sit and relax under the sun and shade. This place also hosts a weekend farmers market, which attracts large crowds.

Please help me understand how this new route from the old 28 A to the A 25 is fair? This new route goes all around via almost 30 stops taking passengers round about way between the two stops. This is just another example of poor planning and inequitable planning for all residents. When was there input from residents on this new route??? This is unfair and unacceptable. Unbelievable!!!!

The Old Presbyterian Meeting House is a historic church in Alexandria, Virginia. Established in 1753, it is one of the oldest churches in the area and a significant part of colonial history. The building currently serves as the headquarters of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
This church is truly special, and we feel incredibly blessed to have been part of this warm and welcoming community since 1995. The fellowship, faith, music and support here are truly inspiring. If you’re looking for a church home that feels like family and nurtures your spiritual growth, we wholeheartedly recommend this congregation. All are welcome!

If you are a Daughter or Son of the American Revolution (as I am) you will find here the tomb of the unknown revolutionary war soldier and others. What a historic gem!
Diana S — Google review
Established in 1772 the building was Georgian style but was gutted by a fire in 1835 but was rebuilt using the same eighteenth century architectural elements. I came to the Meeting House to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier. Well kept and lovely churchyard. Lots of history on this plot of land.

Wonderful and historic church founded in 1772; a fantastic and welcoming community! Churchyard features the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the revolutionary war, and the grave of George Washington’s personal physician. An architecturally beautiful and inclusive piece of Alexandria history.
Nelson M — Google review
OPMH has a beautiful and historic building (fun fact, it once burned down on a Sunday) but what we love about it is the welcoming community. We especially like the low key 8:30 service, which is a bit more casual, with piano instead of the organ and just us folks singing. The 11 am service is perfect if you're looking for a more traditional service, but we like the informality and warmth of the early one.
Ernest L — Google review
Absolutely stunning music and a very talented music director, although he and his also very talented soprano wife leaving (sigh) for life reasons.. BUT the organ is a good instrument which should provide many more good concerts in the right hands. Also important: this is a congregation that is radically welcoming, genuinely so. A beautiful building, a bit threadbare in spots needing your community support!
Hannah P — Google review
Handel’s Messiah at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House was a delight! Thanks to the artists who sang and played the music and to the talented director Steven Seigart. If you missed it this year plan to be there next year for this new tradition. It stirred my testimony of Jesus Christ and increased my knowledge of Him. My new favorite stanza: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen. (Zechariah 9:9-10) it was a pleasure to hear and see Suzanne Karpov Seigert sing this message of love to all women.

The Lincoln Memorial, a tribute to Abraham Lincoln, was designed by architect Henry Bacon after the Parthenon in Greece. The 36 exterior columns represent the states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death, with their names inscribed above them. Inside, a towering statue of Lincoln is flanked by chambers honoring his famous speeches. Located on the west side of the Tidal Basin, it stands opposite the Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials.
The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. is one of the most inspiring and memorable landmarks I have ever visited. The moment you arrive, the scale and presence of the monument immediately capture your attention. Abraham Lincoln’s massive seated statue feels larger than life, not just in size but also in meaning. It is a place that reminds you of the struggles and triumphs that shaped America and the vision of one of its greatest leaders. The memorial’s architecture is stunning, with tall white marble columns surrounding the statue. On the walls, you can find inscriptions of Lincoln’s most famous speeches, including the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address. Reading these words while standing in front of the monument is a powerful experience, filled with history, reflection, and inspiration. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the view is simply breathtaking. The Reflecting Pool stretches out gracefully toward the Washington Monument, creating one of the most iconic and photographed scenes in the entire city. Visiting during sunrise or sunset adds a magical glow to the experience and makes it even more unforgettable. What stood out most to me was the peaceful and respectful atmosphere. Visitors from all over the world gather here, and yet there is a shared sense of quiet admiration. It is a place to pause, reflect, and appreciate the values of freedom, unity, and equality that Lincoln dedicated his life to. A must-visit in Washington, D.C., the Lincoln Memorial truly leaves a lasting impression.
Sai K — Google review
Obviously a must see if you're visiting DC! I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty crowded but people were being very respectful and waiting for others to finish to take their pictures. When you get to the top you can see all the way down the National Mall which is great. Unfortunately the bookstore was closed due to the government shutdown, but still fun to check out!
Maggie T — Google review
A great place to honor our former president. You will never understand how big it is until to get to the bottom. The best time to visit is close to sunset when the sky is pretty and you can see the full reflection of the Washington monument with amazing colors in the sky. The addition of the ramp although blocks the view from the front, is a good addition for those with strollers.
Ajimon T — Google review
Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks in Washington, D.C., and a place that never fails to leave a deep impression no matter how many times you visit. Standing at the base of the monument and looking up at the towering statue of President Abraham Lincoln, you can truly feel the weight of history and the ideals he represented — unity, equality, and freedom. The craftsmanship is remarkable; the marble gleams beautifully in the sunlight during the day and takes on a serene glow under the lights at night. The entire site is impeccably maintained, and the setting along the Reflecting Pool makes it even more breathtaking. Watching the Washington Monument’s reflection shimmer in the water, especially at sunset, is a sight that captures the very spirit of America. The memorial’s inscriptions — the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address — are powerful reminders of the enduring importance of words in shaping a nation’s conscience. The atmosphere is peaceful yet profoundly moving. Tourists, students, and locals all stand together in quiet respect, taking in both the grandeur and the solemnity. Visiting the Lincoln Memorial is not just sightseeing — it’s an experience of reflection, gratitude, and inspiration that every visitor to D.C. should have at least once.
Yuchen Z — Google review
Such an iconic and meaningful place! Did you know that the statue of Abraham Lincoln is 19 feet tall (about 6 meters)? It was originally designed to be much smaller, but the sculptor enlarged it to better fit the grand memorial. On the walls, you’ll find two of Lincoln’s most famous speeches — the Gettysburg Address on the south wall and the Second Inaugural Address on the north wall. Each one captures his vision of unity and equality. A visit here truly feels like stepping into history.
Sena G — Google review
Visiting the Lincoln Memorial was a powerful and memorable experience. Standing before the statue of President Lincoln, surrounded by his famous words engraved on the walls, gives a real sense of history and reflection. The structure itself is impressive — beautifully designed, peaceful, and perfectly positioned to overlook the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument. The area is clean, well-maintained, and easy to reach, especially for a walk along the National Mall. Whether you visit during the day or at sunset, the atmosphere feels calm and respectful. It’s a must-see landmark in Washington, D.C., offering both beauty and meaning in one place.

Visited the Lincoln Memorial early in the morning before flying back to Kingdom. The calm atmosphere and morning light made the visit truly memorable. It’s an inspiring place that captures the essence of American history - definitely worth seeing, even if you have just a few hours in Washington, D.C.

Part of the national mall and the first monument on the far end of the park. This monument is a tribute to Abraham Lincoln and has a gigantic sculpture, overlooking the entire national mall. The view from atop the memorial is beautiful especially on a sunny day from where you can see the water, the Washington Monument, and the Capitol Hill. There is a ramp that makes it accessible for wheelchairs all the way up to the monument. There is a large staircase to access the actual monument. There is ample street parking available on constitution Avenue which is paid till 6 PM during weekdays

The Washington Monument is a towering obelisk located in the National Mall, serving as a tribute to George Washington, the first president of the United States. Standing as the world's tallest freestanding stone structure, it underwent construction challenges due to funding issues and political conflicts, resulting in a noticeable change in stone color partway up.
An awesome and wonderful place! It is peace , large and beautiful area. We visit there in the morning, afternoon and evening, it’s nice at anytime. It’s easy to get there, you can walk, rent a scooter or a e-bike…. You can sit there as long as you want , while there is windy in the fall and not crowded.

The Washington Monument is absolutely breathtaking and one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington, D.C. Standing tall in the heart of the National Mall, it offers not just a stunning view of the city but also a deep sense of history and pride. From the moment you approach it, the monument’s grandeur is striking — simple yet powerful, perfectly representing George Washington’s legacy. The area around it is beautifully maintained, with plenty of space to walk, relax, and take amazing photos. If you can, take the elevator ride to the top — the panoramic views of the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and Reflecting Pool are unforgettable! Even if you don’t go up, just being there at sunrise or sunset is a magical experience. It’s more than just a monument — it’s a symbol of unity, freedom, and the nation’s beginnings. Truly a must-visit for anyone exploring Washington.

I had just picked up my friend from Germany from the airport, and we decided to spend the day visiting all the monuments. Standing at the Washington Monument was such an amazing experience the history, the views, and the feeling of being right in the heart of D.C. made it so special. As someone who lives only about three and a half hours away, I can’t believe I waited this long to do it. It really made me appreciate how incredible our nation’s capital is. Better late than never! 🇺🇸✨

Awesome experience. Who knew you could go inside and up to the top in an elevator? This iconic DC monunent to George Washington is beautiful. Rich in history and all around awesome. Plus the park rangers here rock!!! Couldn't be nicer AND....Irs FREE! We got same day tickets for 1.5 hours after we booked. But I recommend reserving in advance.

The Washington Monument is definitely one of the most awesome landmarks in Washington, D.C. It’s super tall and stands right in the center of everything, so you can see it from almost anywhere on the National Mall. When you walk up close, you really notice how massive it is and how detailed the stonework looks. It’s even cooler when you think about how it was built such a long time ago to honor George Washington. If you get the chance to go up to the top, the view is incredible, you can see the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and even the White House from up there. At night, when it’s all lit up, it looks amazing reflecting in the water. The whole area around it feels peaceful, and it’s a great place to just hang out or take pictures. seeing it in person is definitely an experience you won’t forget.

This monument is located in the middle of the Washington mall park. There are beautiful views from here on both sides. On a clear day it’s a beautiful view of the Lincoln Memorial while on the Northern side you get a view of White House, on the southern side it’s Jefferson Memorial and on the western end it’s a view of the Capitol Building. There is paid street parking available on all sides of the monument, and is almost a 7 minute walk in each direction. A really nice and must visit monument in Washington DC.
Avais S — Google review
It is always nice to see this amazing piece of architecture. The best view is definitely from the lincoln memorial at sunset when you see the full reflection amidst the cotton candy colors in the sky. It is possible to also purchase tickets in advance and go all the way to the top - i did not do it this time around.
Ajimon T — Google review
This is a must see when in Washington. You can see it from so many parts of the city. There is an amazing viewpoint of the back of the White House. The Mémorial is protcted by members of the military. I spoke to many and they are there doing whatever is needed to help. We felt very safe in the city. If you see them say thank you and shake their hands.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a popular Smithsonian museum featuring unique exhibits that delve into the history, culture, and community of African Americans. The museum's collection offers a rich portrayal of the African American experience, spanning from slavery through significant historical periods such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. Visitors can explore fascinating artifacts like a toy wooden crib crafted by an enslaved mother and a lace shawl gifted to Harriet Tubman by Queen Victoria.
Reserve tickets ahead of time. We got in rather quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful. The museum was very thoughtfully laid out and incredibly moving! We spent about 4.5 hours but could have taken longer. Even our 7 year old was engaged and taking time to read the plaques on each item. What an honor to be there. My grandfather (John M Johnson) was a contributor to the museum and it was so cool seeing his name on display as well. Would love to return!
Kearston F — Google review
This museum is AMAZING!! I didn't get to view the entire museum due to time but I STRONGLY recommend you visit if you want to know anything about Black History! There are lots of exhibits, artifacts, and real people giving their own words and feelings via videos you can listen to. There is lots of information some you may not even know, heard about or learned. The museum has a cafeteria you can buy for and sit and eat,( I had the spiced lamb and it was delicious). I will definitely be returning and making a day just to visit the museum in it's entirety. There was a group of high school kids visiting and it was great seeing and hearing them in awe of what is not taught in school about this part of American history because Black History is American history! If ever in Washington DC I highly recommend you visit and bring the kids!

Such a wonderfully cultivated museum with such great detail. The knowledge of the docents was spectacular. I felt engaged and grew the desire to read more. The greeter were extremely pleasant and helpful. I'm just sorry I missed eating there. I hear the food is awesome. However, I deeply explored the exhibits that I literally forgot to eat in the 6 hours I was there... and still didn't get it all in. The reflection waterfall was a nice way decompress and process.

Beautiful, both inside and out! Most memorable part of my trip was visiting this museum. Learned so much. A must see while in DC. Entry was seamless & securing tickets in advance was very simple, not to mention free! But please don’t forget to donate. Highly recommend.

Filled with so much information and laid out amazingly. So many artifacts filled with incredible history. If you are anything like me and like to read EVERY picture and plaque, you will easily need about 6-7 hours to fully immerse yourself in the entire museum. I spent about 3 hours and only made it 1.5 floors.

From the history to the art this place is beautiful. My partner and I’s first time here and it truly is a wonderful museum to visit. It truly takes you back in time and gives so much history detail on so many different topics. From the art to the famous items displayed, couldn’t recommend anymore. Can be a bit difficult to move around at some parts but all depends on what day you go and how busy it is.

Love love love this place!! I've been here many times but my first with grandson #2. He's a history buff at 10 and he loved every step. We were there from open to close. I had to persuade him to eat. He was happy to eat spicy macaroni and cheese. We'll be making 1 more visit before heading back to Chicago.

My first visit. It was historic. There is so much history from all over the country. There was so much detail and so many stories told. I was sad, angry, heartbroken and happy and nostalgic. I grew up in the South Bronx during the 70s and 80s and witnessed the birth of hip hop. It was captured so well. It would be a shame if they changed anything.

Old Town Alexandria Waterfront is a charming riverside promenade with an array of bars, restaurants, and ice cream parlors. The historic Old Town Theatre, though no longer hosting performances, remains a beloved landmark in the city. Strolling along the waterfront at sunset offers stunning views of National Harbor across the water. The bustling streets feature shopping, dining options, cobblestone streets, and 18th and 19th century architecture.
Dynamic downtown with copious amounts of bars, restaurants, coffee shops and the like. If you need to take a breather to decompress, take a walk along the waterfront, where there are calming seas, ample greenery, and beautiful brick dwellings to add to the ambiance. All in all, a fantastic place for a stroll.

Great waterfront area with lots of cafes & bars. During the day it’s a quiet area for a walk but it really comes a live at night. If you have kids there’s some great ice cream places in Kings street just before you come to the waterfront area. The night I was there, a local boat club was out sailing and when the sun went down there were two very talented guys singing in the little park area with the Astro turf.

I always love this area. I always tell myself if I ever move back to the area I'm going to live in old town. Unfortunately the waterfront is currently flooded thanks to hurricane Erin 8/2025. But all the restaurants and bars not flooded seem to be open! I'm going to have to come back and shop during daylight hours

Love love loved it here. I can't wait to come back. I stayed at the Hilton on King Street, hopped on the FREE trolley, went to the Farmers market, and purchased some fresh Greek yogurt that was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS then got a yogurt drink from the Amish. The muffins from Zuzu was great! Even got something to help my Dog

Went to the Saturday farmers market and was not disappointed! The farmers and makers were approachable with unique, fresh produce. Being August I bought fresh peaches, corn on the cob (1$ each) fresh spinach and “sexy soup”. Aka. Gazpacho! Lucked out with on street parking( free) and beautiful weather! It was crowded( 10:00am) but still I was able to wander amongst the stalls and tables easily.

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria is a rare gem, offering visitors a glimpse into the world of an authentic apothecary that remained virtually untouched since its closure in 1933. The museum provides 30-minute tours that delve into the history of its renowned potions and showcases an array of preserved tinctures, scales, and peculiar bottles with handwritten labels.
What a cool authentic time capsule of an early US Apothecary. Well worth the time! They even had a letter from Martha Washington ordering supplies from them. The upstairs work shop contains all the original ingredients, storage bins, and tools of the trade that have been there for over 200 years.

So worth checking out. A rare time capsule. So rare in fact, that even the original owners realized it was worth preserving with as much originality as possible...back in the 1700s! It's also worth your money for the guided tour. Our guide was wonderful.
Megan B — Google review
I had to pleasure of taking the poison tour that was offered by the museum, and I had so much fun learning about the way people in the late 1800 to early 1900s utilized what we now know was poisonous chemicals and herbs as unique treatment methods. It was so cool getting to tour the shop and storage spaces and learn about how the shop operated when it was still in business. I would love to come back and take another tour during their normal business hours to browse the exhibits, but Gray, our tour guide did a phenomenal job during our hour-long tour!

Great job preserving this piece of history. Worth seeing once. It is only the one room and there was no upstairs portion to see when I visited. The ticket clerk was not paying much attention to the simple rope blocking off the one room available to view. I might suggest they install a turnstile. It would also be nice to have a video of costumed apothecaries talking with clients in period garb and concocting a remedy. That would make it a better experience. Otherwise, you'll probably only spend 10-15 minutes here.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum is a historic site in Old Town Alexandria, VA, featuring two buildings - the tavern and the City Hotel. These were popular gathering places in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum offers tours showcasing artifacts from that era and hosts special events throughout the year. It was frequented by notable figures like Presidents Washington and Jefferson, offering visitors a glimpse into Colonial times.
I used my Keys to the City pass and paid extra $3 for the guided tour. Gary was delightful!!! The displayed artifacts and Gary's narration gave a great view of day-to-day life in the 1700's. I was pleased to hear quite a bit of respectful and relevant information about the work of slaves in the tavern.

Nice visit to the museum. The museum has been carefully preserved and it is really cool to walk the footsteps of our founding fathers. What really stands out is the people who work there. Stopped in for a quick lunch after being told from multiple people that this is a "must see" place in Old Town Alexandria. And let me tell you, they were right! It was lunch time so there were a few groups of people. There was a long wait time to get a table mainly due to low staffing. But everyone I encountered was super friendly and welcoming. After reading the pamphlet about the history of the tavern, I asked the waitress if they still sold the rum punch because I didn't see it on the menu. She said that they do and would check if they had any made. Even though she was super busy helping so many tables, she made a special trip to the basement to get my drink. I felt so sorry for her because then other patrons started asking me what this drink is that looked so good and they started asking for it as well! All in all, I would certainly recommend and will be going again when I'm back in town. Good food, friendly staff and many, many years of history in this place!

What a little gem of American history. Gary did a fantastic job of bringing that history to life with his tour. The museum is set up for self-guided tours, but if there's a docent available, you'll have a much better experience - the stories are great! Pat in the gift shop was super friendly and helpful as well. A bargain at only $5!

The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, established in 1839, offers a comprehensive look into the city's history from Colonial times to the 20th century. It is part of a network of museums and historic sites that collectively narrate Alexandria's story. The museum was founded as a scholarly society by Benjamin Hallowell and also housed facilities for the Alexandria Library Company. Additionally, it played a role in urban archaeology to uncover artifacts preserving the city's heritage.
Great overview of history of Alexandria. The Fresnel lens’ are so cool. The staff and gift shops are bonuses. Really enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend a stop in.

Small and free museum in a central location of the historical district of Alexandria. The exhibits are okay. The artefacts are not special but the descriptions are of interest. The gift store is excellent and has some wonderful unique items of local interest. Also if you have a Lighthouse Passport you can get the stamp at the gift store desk you just have to ask for it.

Wonderful space to rent for small concerts and recitals. The piano sounds good and is well maintained. Rental fee is very reasonable. There’s a bit of street noise but nothing that is too distracting.
Chris C — Google review
A regional museum that informs the visitor of Alexandria's complex history. I like the way it tracks the rise of the town until the devastation of the American Civil War, and then the struggle to find relevance then after. The physical development of the town is explained. Special exhibitions are good (March 2019): Alexandria and WW1; and a display of clothing items from the 19th century. The building, respectfully restored, is a fine example of early architecture in the town. Well worth a visit.

Jones Point Lighthouse, a storied structure dating back to 1855, stands on the banks of the Potomac River in a charming park setting. It is the only remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia and offers a romantic backdrop for couples. Visitors can rent bikes and explore the area, which also features restaurants, bars, fishing piers, and recreational facilities. The one-story building served as a signal for ships navigating the river and provides insight into the region's shipping history.
Cool piece of history and great public park. Original land owned & used for tobacco agriculture by early suffragette Margaret Brent, whom was granted land patent in 1654. Best part, the original District of Colombia southern boundary marker and stones marking the boarders. Great place for a walk or time with your family.
Douglas A — Google review
It's a nice location but the lighthouse is not your typical lighthouse. It's just a small building with the light attached to the top of it. It's also in very bad condition and not open to the public. The walk from the free parking lot is short and depending on the path you take, you get some amazing views of the water.

I always love finding old historical structures like this. It seems a little worse for wear but it’s still really fascinating to just find something like this. I had no idea this was here until I stumbled upon the park and looked it up on google maps. I definitely had to come back when I realized I had missed this. Definitely worth a look.

Farmers Markets
The Old Town Farmers' Market in Alexandria, Virginia, is a delightful Saturday tradition that dates back to 1753, making it the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the United States. Every Saturday morning throughout the year, this vibrant market comes alive on Market Square in front of City Hall.
Situated at 301 King Street, right in front of City Hall, the Old Town Alexandria Farmers' Market is a historic gem and a Saturday morning staple for those who live nearby. Open every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to Noon, rain, shine, or snow, this is not just a farmers market; this is THE farmers market! Holding the title of the oldest farmers' market in the country held continuously at the same site, it offers a unique blend of history and community spirit. You can stroll through the same market that George Washington sold his produce from Mount Vernon and immerse yourself in a tradition that dates back centuries. From the moment you arrive, the market's lively atmosphere draws you in. With over 70 vendors during peak season, there's a dazzling array of offerings including fresh fruits and vegetables, hot prepared foods, cheeses, specialty sauces, freshly baked breads, pastries and much more. Some of my favorite and regular places that I visit at the market are Coulter farms (which provides high-quality dairy goods, beef, granolas and more from an Amish farm), Baked by Yael (which offers delectable bagels and treats that are perfect for a quick snack as you browse) and Hog Haven Farm which is a crowd favorite (their breakfast sandwiches are so good, there's often a line, but it moves quickly and is worth every minute of the wait). Also I can't forget about MB Bakery On The Go, located along the back side of the fountain, it has a lot of real estate showcasing their variety of baked goods and famous homemade pop-tarts. Chocotenango Chocolate is also great (chocolates handcrafted from bean to bar). Bigg Riggs Gourmet Farm brings some of the freshest fruits and vegetables, and Farm Kettle Corn is perfect for a sweet and / or savory, crunchy treat. If you're looking for something for the home head to Lily Shoppe which sells natural soap bars that are aromatic and sweet, you can browse them while snacking on an Maracas Ice Pop (all-natural fruit popsicles) from the corner. They are a refreshing and delicious way to help keep you cool on these hot DMV Saturdays. There are too many great places to list here but it's a overall a great opportunity to support local businesses all at once! Live musical performances also add to the festive ambiance, making the market experience even more enjoyable (these performances seem to rotate every week). With many public bike racks close to Market Square, it’s bike-friendly too—just remember to bring your own lock as bikes (as well as pets) aren't permitted on Market Square during market hours. The Old Town Alexandria Farmers' Market is more than a place to shop; it’s a place to connect with locals and local businesses, experience history, and enjoy the best local produce and artisanal goods the area has to offer. It’s an essential Saturday destination that promises a delightful experience for everyone. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this market is a must-visit if you are nearby!

This farmers' market is located in Old Town, Alexandria. It offers several fresh items, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, cheeses, honey, and baked goods. Walking from one stall to another can be an enjoyable experience as you can explore what each vendor offers and people at the market are friendly. The prices at the market may not necessarily be lower than those at a supermarket, but you support your local community by purchasing from them.

Jammed packed with great vendors. It’s a short walk around the square. You can easily create a favorite list of vendors. Delicious fruit, baked goods, great dairy products. I have much to explore. 🤙
Karinabel - — Google review
Extremely disappointed in my experience. The no dog policy is not well advertised online and signs are not easily visible at all entry points. I went for the first time with my small chihuahua and even though I was holding her I was approached by security and informed that vendors complained about my dog being present and that it posed a health risk. I have eaten at many fancy and elegant restaurant patios with my dog and have never heard of dogs being disallowed outside. I will not give business to this market. It was extremely crowded and disorganized anyway. I also saw a couple of cheese stands and was disappointed to see it was mostly prepackaged cheeses - not the experience I’ve had at other farmers markets. If I want prepackaged cheeses I’ll go to a grocery store.
Annie — Google review
Really disappointed to get here and learn they don't allow dogs. We moved from the Midwest to Maryland last year... Farmers markets were both much larger and more popular there and we loved taking our dog on cool mornings. He's well behaved and it's excellent enrichment for him as well as a great chance for us to support local farms and artisans. We really missed it, so we drove almost an hour to this market this morning only to be greeted by massive "Do Dogs Allowed" signs at every possible entrance. There were plenty of dogs loitering around the edges of the market, so it seems like we weren't the only ones surprised. It's really a shame for a dog-friendly city with one of the largest open-air DMV farmers markets to ban pets at that market.

The Alfred Street Baptist Church is one of the oldest congregations in Alexandria and one of the oldest in the Washington area. The church was originally built in 1855, and has since offered both religious and secular learning opportunities for African Americans. In addition to its traditional services, the church also operates an educational branch that provides education to both children and adults.
I finally visited after finding out about this church a year ago. Great pastor & great sermon. I can tell the congregation loves their church because I arrived 5 minutes early to the second service and was almost sent to the overflow. I know next time to arrive much earlier. Parking: if you don’t get there early enough the garage parking will be full & you then have to find street parking & then walk. I had to walk 2 blocks, but at least the street parking is free on Sundays.

Was there to help in the celebration of Mrs. Garrett as she retired as the lead over the Worship Arts Ministry for well over forty years. Incredible gift, and her last Sunday in that lead role was no less than exceptional. The congregation and atmosphere is always friendly, and Pastor Wesley’s message always gives you something to meditate on during the week back and go back read your bible. It is tough to get seated inside the main sanctuary if you dont get there at least an hour in advance.

Congrats! Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy Kwanzaa! Though I have listening virtually to the Sunday service off and on; let me commend the church on the recently attended Alfred Street Baptist Church Music and Worship Arts Ministry,”Do You Hear What I Hear?”, Production performed at The Kennedy Center on Tuesday December 05, 2023 at 8:00 pm ***Phenomenal! **Outstanding! **Awesome! **Excellent! **Fabulous! ***Well Done!

The building could probably be 3 times as large because they people are not able to be all together in the same room for this amazing church service. God is moving in this place though. It takes planning to get there and find a seat in the main sanctuary.

Sr. Pastor John Wesley is a class act and extremely talented. He believes in supporting and advocating for women in leadership and exemplifying what walking the walk of faith looks like with not only the successes but all of the struggles, pitfalls it comes with. This church is a community that believes in tithing the tithe. Plenty of ministries and services that give back to the community.

My first experience at Alfred Street Baptist Church was on New Year's Day...I believe 2024. The praise & worship was wonderful...and then the word was electric! My second time, 4/27/25...a lady spoke an encouraging word, "He Restoreth My Soul". Definitely a place to go visit...and the people are friendly!

The Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial is a poignant tribute to the struggles of those who fought for freedom from slavery. This serene site features a striking statue, 'The Path of Thorns and Roses,' symbolizing the arduous journey toward liberation. Visitors can explore the rich history encapsulated within its grounds, which are part of a broader narrative that includes various cultural landmarks in Alexandria. The cemetery is well-maintained, though some grave markers show signs of nature reclaiming them.
Last year my wife and I were walking the new bridge. We arrived at the Virginia side of it to see this historic monument. To my surprise I saw a man walking his dog in the cemetery. He allowed it to poop there. I asked him if it was okay that I poop on your anscestors graves? He got mad. Virginia allows whites and others to disrespect this monument by allowing their dogs to poop on it.

It’s beautiful place and I’m so thankful that something like this preserved for the public to learn about. African-American history is American history and it’s wonderful to honor the slaves and freedmen that built this city and country.
Brittany C — Google review
When the Civil War started and the Union took Alexandria many escaped slaves, called Contraband, poured into the city to escape their former masters. This overcrowding caused a high mortality rate. The soldiers seized a undeveloped plot of land and turned it into a cemetery. More than 1,700 Freedmen and Contrabands were buried here, Of course it was forgotten, built on, and many of the graves were destroyed. Rediscovered in 1996 it is now a monunment, From what I understand about 500 graves still exist and many of the markers on the ground had only 'Grave Of An Adult' on it. BUT the lists of names suggest more knowledge of who was buried. Mostly because many of their descendants were found. Oh, is that crow or a raven?
Michael V — Google review
Very sobering experience. The monument is an excellent tribute. Tickets not necessary.

On a random walk noticed the Freedmans cemetary. It's an amazing piece of history and culture. Very happy that we saw this place. It's small but the history and reflection provided is worth a visit. They also have a listing of the people buried there and and nice little fact on if their descendants have been found.

Subway station
King St-Old Town Metrorail Station is located at the western end of Alexandria's King Street, offering easy access to a mile-long stretch of shops and restaurants leading to the Potomac River waterfront. This bustling area is known for its vibrant city planning and convenient transportation options, including free bus services and connections to VRE and Amtrak trains.
I am a local which means when I take a Metro, our subway, from where I am to where it is, usually it is because I have a tourist on board and want them to see the sites. What King St-Old Town is is a sites to see, foods to taste and a walk in the footsteps of history of where America began. Oh, and also there is the unique trolley car one can ride for free up Duke Street to the train station and back down Duke Street to the wharf, and, best of all the trolley car is for free. The station is clean. The WMATA staff are the best. The WMATA staff know the role they play in introducing guests to the Nation's capitol to history and beyond as they did this inauguration weekend for lookie-loos, for tourmongers and for those who just wanted to snag a presidential farecard celebrating the 2nd inauguration of Mr. Trump, this card bearing the photo of Mr. Trumps mugshot. This Metro station is walkable to the George Washington Masonic Temple, in viewing distance of the USPTO office where there is a Museum and, too, is in viewing distance of the Five Guys restaurant headquarters. Five Guys is a local hero chain for burgers and dogs and for hosting Mr's Obama and Biden for their campaign photo op. Convenient for tourists is a parking garage across the street and, too, is a hotel for tourists who dont want to do the drive to the nation's capitol, rather want to roll out of bed, grab the Metro before hoofing it around town even on cobblestone streets that are the real deal of where George and Martha used to walk and party hardy over a hundred years ago.
Carrie D — Google review
Conveniently located standard metro station. After dusk there is heavy rat activity as they can be seen scurrying about the bus area nightly. Difficult problem but city needs to take additional mitigation steps to better control.
Jill — Google review
This is an awesome station, and a good alternative to Union Station if you're riding Amtrak or the VRE, but I do get some bad memories of when I almost got hit by a car on the Daingerfield and Diagonal Road intersection. :/
Josh B — Google review
Very conveniently located next to the Embassy Suites which I stayed at, so I didn’t have to walk far from my hotel to the Metro Station
Andy V — Google review
Walking distance and takes 30min to get to downtown. $13 for a daily pass.
A D — Google review
After years of construction -- the bus bay has opened and the station has been renovated. Grand hub for people wishing to go to DC by train, National Harbor by bus, or elsewhere in town and around the area. Getting into the transit center itself, as a pedestrian, requires patience. Despite the high pedestrain traffic, the lights are set to alternate every couple of minutes which encourages dangerous behavior like jaywalking. It should prioritize peds, but the buttons closest to the station appear nonfunctional, similar to placebo. Still, it's an alright and generally safe place.
Daniel — Google review
King Street Metro is a convenient location to experience Old Town Alexandria. It is located on the North part of the famous King Street. So we're good tennis shoes and you can walk all the way to the Potomac River and experience the Grandeur of a city where our founding fathers once walked. Unfortunately if someone tries to pick you up with their car traffic is hectic and parking is minimum.
Jennifer K — Google review
The inside is ok, but the outside can be a bit scary and unclean. Workers are not the friendliest. There's a free trolley to take you around King Street, which is nice and spacey and likes to tell you about the history of Old Town Alexandria. Waiting near the bus stations was a bit scary as I faced some people who were trying to intimidate me for bad reasons, and the ambience speaks for itself. I do like the public transportation options though, as there are a variety of route options for getting to Maryland or Virginia.

The Old Town Alexandria Harbor is a charming spot located along the waterfront, offering 62 slips with water and electricity connections. Visitors can admire a submarine propeller from the USS Pompon and enjoy watching boats and ferries on the Potomac River. The area features benches for relaxation, with Waterfront Park nearby and various dining options within walking distance. Additionally, the Torpedo Art Factory is situated behind the harbor, while historic buildings in Old Town Alexandria provide a glimpse into its colonial past.
It was flooded at the time with all the rain from the past couple of days, but it was still enjoyable and a lovely walk around the harbor.

It's a lovely place to walk when the weather is nice. Numerous boats and ferries are docked here, offering a beautiful view of the Potomac River and National Harbor. The open area has plenty of benches to sit on while enjoying the scenery. You can watch people walking by and boats sailing on the river. Waterfront Park is located right next to it, and many restaurants and coffee shops are nearby. The Torpedo Art Factory is behind the harbor, and Old Town Alexandria is just a few steps away.

Nice view and fancy waterfront with expensive restaurants and local attractions but not sure about fully full scale boat place. Rather small boat place for a rich neighborhood. Nice to be a summer time, maybe autumn but nothing much other than that.

Nice place .it's a lot of fun walking around with our little one. The views are awesome, there are many great restaurant options, and there are often fun activities. It's well maintained and clean-sometimes parking is difficult but only if you're looking for free parking. There were multiple options of restaurants,coffee-and ice-cream.

The old seaport section of Alexandria, the Old Town Alexandria, is a great place to visit with a free trolley on King Street that would get you around the area. But I would suggest you walk on its cobblestone streets and enjoy the historic buildings that abound. According to history, Alexandria’s riverfront was an important colonial port during the colonial, revolutionary and Civil War periods, dating back to 1749. The Potomac river is beautiful, so enjoy the walk. If you happen to be there at sunset, you will love the place even more. There are a variety of guided tours available including cruises on the Potomac River, horse drawn carriage rides, ghost tours, and historic walking tours.
Eric S — Google review
Great place for an evening by the riverside. Food joints of all variety and class. The view at night across the river with the giant wheel and the rec centers lit up grandly, is exotic. There are ferries which take you on a fun ride on the river for a fee.

The Appomattox Statue, located in Alexandria and unveiled in 1889, stands out from typical war memorials by portraying a contemplative unarmed private soldier. Sponsored by the R. E. Lee Camp Confederate Veterans, the statue pays tribute to fallen comrades of the Civil War. The soldier's downcast gaze and rumpled uniform convey a sense of reflection rather than glorification of battle.
This is not a mere "statue" but a monument. Read the inscription on it, and learn. Those who say they would tear it down are ignorant AND stupid.
