Kumamoto Castle, originally built in 1607, is a reconstructed castle located in the heart of Kumamoto City. It serves as a history museum and stands as a symbol of the city's rich heritage. The castle played a significant role during Japan's Warring States period and continues to be an integral part of Kumamoto's identity.
Kumamoto Castle was my 1st Japanese castle tour, and it was amazing. We arrived just before the last entry at 4pm. Most of the information inside is in Japanese, but it was still a great experience. The tour involves a lot of walking under the sun before reaching the castle, so I recommend bringing an umbrella. It was quite sunny when we went late in September 2025. I also bought myself a souvenir: a gojoin and a gojoincho.
LA F — Google review
The castle is quite beautiful, but so is many other castles around Japan. While the constructed elevated walkway does take away from the historic look and feel, it does however give a different vantage point to the ground path. There are still many spots where the earthquake damage is “preserved”. The tourist facilities are very well laid out and most staff can speak basic English, and restaurant and snacks stalls are a bit expensive but reasonable for a tourist spot. Worth a visit if you are already coming to Kumamoto, but I wouldn’t bother travelling long distance just to see the castle.
Charles Y — Google review
We had one of the most fun castle visits in Kumamoto! My family and I really enjoyed the activities: trying on traditional Samurai clothes while exploring the site, watching the exciting Samurai battle performance, and taking photos in the beautifully designed areas with authentic architecture and house backdrops. The castle itself is a magnificent sight, full of rich history to discover. Everything was well-organized, and the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. Truly a memorable experience!
BA — Google review
Kumamoto Castle looks beautiful from the outside and the reconstruction after the 2016 earthquake is impressive. Inside it feels modern, more like a museum about the castle than a place showing how it once looked. There are no traditional rooms or old interiors like in Himeji. There’s also a separate Castle Museum but it can be skipped since the main castle already explains most of the history and the rebuilding process. Great to see from the outside, but not the old Japan vibe I expected.
Rienk S — Google review
Admission fee 800yen for castle only. There is an app called the KumaCastle which they encouraged you to download. Very easy to use. U can use the app to scan the QR code in each station for a more thorough briefing. Learnt that this castle got affected by the earthquake on 2016 and restoration is still in progress. Looking at how they went on to preserve something so worthy of the effort is heartwarming. Not boring. It’s educational and it’s informative for both adults and kids.
Diana S — Google review
A very well preserved historical monument, and very cleverly and sensitively remodelled to include visual and static exhibits, including modern amenities like walking paths and ramps, and elevators and toilets. Becoming a user friendly and accessible place for everyone. The visual displays and video documentary present very detailed historical and rehabilitation backgrounds, making the visit very interesting and educational.
KC C — Google review
Due to multiple damage, The exterior is rebuilt to the original. The interior is rebuilt for education and all history exhibition with modern technology. There are still ruins remains around, Kumamoto city is making effort to bring it back.
Chao Z — Google review
This is quite a disappointment. They only manage to preserved the outlook of the castle. Inside are just halls displaying the castle information and that is where the problem is.. everything is in Japanese. After going to Osaka castle where you can see a good preserved castle including the interior, this is really disappointing.

Suizenji Jojuen Garden is a serene and picturesque Japanese landscape garden located in Kumamoto. It was originally constructed by the renowned Hosokawa family during the 17th century and has since been opened to the public as a tranquil park. The garden features meticulously designed miniature landmarks, including small rolling hills and a replica of Mount Fuji. Visitors can also enjoy attractions such as a tea house, a large pond, traditional Noh theater performances, and occasional horse archery tournaments.
Peaceful garden if you come in the morning to beat the tourists. Accessible by tram and only a few minutes walk from the tram station. You can buy koi or pigeon food for 200 yen for small bag or 500 yen one big bag. The mini Mt Fuji is kind of not that impressive but the garden is still nice. There are vending machines and a few public restrooms. We spent about 80 minutes here feeding the koi and pigeons, so expect to spend between 30 minutes to maybe 2 hours here if you enjoy just sitting down and taking in the surroundings. Beware of mosquitoes in the summer because there is standing water.

A beautiful and well-maintained Japanese garden, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. The landscape is carefully designed, featuring a large pond, traditional tea houses, and a miniature representation of the Tokaido road, including a small Mt. Fuji. The garden reflects the beauty of Japanese aesthetics, with seasonal flowers adding to its charm. The entrance fee is 400 yen as of March 2025. A great spot to take a relaxing stroll, enjoy and admire the harmony of nature. Enjoy 😎🙏🧘🧘‍♀️

Visited on a rainy morning so enjoyed a quieter atmosphere with fewer tourists. A lovely Japanese garden with two shrines and many stores inside, but not that different from otherJapanese gardens if you had visited them elsewhere.
Sylvia C — Google review
I went here to relax after a long day. It’s a quiet park with lots of benches around the lake. There aren’t many people around. There’s a shrine inside and some small torii gates. The lake has a lot of fish as well. I saw many cherry trees, so this park must be even more beautiful during cherry blossom season. Entrance fee for adult is 400yen.
VJ — Google review
A very well-preserved garden. You can also enjoy the “water of longevity” inside the shrine in the garden.
Helen T — Google review
It is a place you would like to enjoy, quiet. Not too many people, enjoy the peace and meditation. But for some people maybe boring, but it is only 10-15 minutes by tram, it worth to go in my opinion.
Martin M — Google review
Took an easy tram ride on the “A” ¥180 per person let you write off within a block of the gardens. Beautiful maintained gardens really enjoyed the walk around.

3Reigando Cave

Historical landmark
Reigando Cave, situated in Kumamoto, Japan, is a place of great historical and cultural significance. It holds the distinction of being where the renowned samurai Miyamoto Musashi wrote the final chapter of 'The Book of Five Rings.' Nestled on the western side of Mount Kimpo, this natural cave offers visitors a tranquil atmosphere and a chance to explore the space where Musashi spent his last days.
The entrance to the cave must go through the Unganzenji temple. It's not that hard to visit here. Just find the way to Sakuramachi Bus Terminal and get on the U3-1 bus at 10:30am (ask the info counter to make sure). Then drop at Iwado Kannon Iriguchi stop and walk up the hill around 20-30 mins. You can get the bus back to town at the same stop at 02:41pm. If you're Musashi's fan, it's worth to visit indeed.
Chanin H — Google review
Wonderful serene place with a cool history to it. Please be sure to read up on it first. There are a few spots to see and it was very quiet and beautiful. The area is great for hiking but I had no offline map and no reception so I chickened out. Please prepare accordingly and mind the public transport is somewhat limited be sure to know the times.
Siemon S — Google review
If you're into the history, this cave is worthwhile trip. It costs 300 yen to enter and the gentleman there was very kind and helpful. It's a very peaceful area with great history. Be prepared to walk a while from the bus stop if you don't have a car. Also, the busses only go every couple of hours so a taxi may be needed. It is well worth the trip to get there.
Tristan J — Google review
I used public transport. From bus stop till the entrance of the temple, it was about 20mins worth of walking up slope. Not sure if it’s because I fell sick a few days ago and have not yet recovered or what, but that walk felt like a hike. If you have access to a motorised vehicle, please just use that. Once you’re up there though, it’s really quiet and peaceful. Absolutely no one. Entrance to the cave requires entrance fee - 300yen. Here i need to warn everyone that there are several flight of steps, both up and down, to get to the actual cave. And they are steep and very uneven. So uneven that one of the steps is almost like a slippery slope sliding down to the step below it. And i unfortunately stepped on that, and slipped and fell. Got some nasty scratches on my legs and sprained my wrist. :( Hold on to the rails for your life. Or wear better shoes with grippier outsoles. I think it’s a me problem though since others don’t seem to be having this issue. Also noticed several spider silk in the way like across the stairs. Just be careful of running into spiders. Be sure to check the bus timings if you’re coming by public transport - they have very limited trips in a day. Download taxi apps like GO in advance just in case.
Lihui H — Google review
Nice temple, the road to the cave is short and easy and is covered with many many statues, each with individual design. The cave itself is very spiritual and provokes to sit and think a little about what and why you are doing in your life. Recommended to go in the morning not to ruin the solo travel
Anton G — Google review
If you are into history and know about Miyamoto Musashi, this cave is a must visit. It is small but gorgeous. However, be aware that the cave is quite far from Kumamoto Station and the bus is hard to reach and time. I went by taxi and on my way back I met Chris from US who offered to drive my back to Kumamoto Station. Thanks again Chris! Should you ever come to Zurich, let me know, I will show you around.

Sakura-no-baba Josaien is a vibrant tourist district located in the Sakuranobaba area of Kumamoto Castle. It features an extensive shopping arcade, numerous restaurants and cafes, and cultural exhibits that showcase Kumamoto's rich history and heritage.
Recommend to stop by here if visiting the Kumamoto castle. Sure, it’s catered for tourists and a bit more pricey but they are basically serving you Kumamoto on a plate. Souvenirs, local specialities, museums, and occasionally an English sign or two. It’s not very big but it’s like 10 minutes away from the castle so might as well stop by. Bought my castle tickets here.
Helena W — Google review
I came here in the evening after visiting the castle. It is obviously built for tourists so prices can be a bit higher here. But also you will be able to find unique food like horse meat here, and also omiyage from the Kumamoto region. Was not crowded because I arrived quite late.
狐鸣 — Google review
Located near the castle, this place was historically used as a stable area for the castle's horses. Today, it has been transformed into a commercial area filled with souvenir shops and food stalls. While it tries to recreate a historical atmosphere, it lacks real historical significance beyond its original purpose. The area is often overcrowded, and unless you're specifically looking to buy souvenirs or try local snacks, there isn’t much to see. If you're short on time, it's not really worth a visit.
Ryan G — Google review
The food here is low quality and expensive. It is better to come here after having a meal at the nearby mall's food court. Definition of a tourist trap. But you can still enjoy the scenery and old aesthetic without buying any food. The Kumamoto Castle ticketing area is here too, you can buy tickets and ticket packages for the castle and museums. This area feels too commercialized, lacking many of the traditional feeling. You can also print a Kumamoto Castle coin with engraving for 630 yen
ItzMe — Google review
Not a big area. Mainly restaurants. One gift shop. Walking around here takes 10 mins unless you go for the VR or wearing costumes to walk around and take pictures. Enjoy the ancient feel with the architectural style.
SiewHong P — Google review
Sakura-no-baba Josaien, a lively castle town square at the foot of Kumamoto Castle, where visitors can enjoy local cuisine, traditional crafts, and cultural performances.
Sazzadur R — Google review
One of nice spots to visit when you are visiting Kumamoto Castle, it is near the castle, and close to bus stop that will take you back to the town. Here, there are lots of local shops and restaurants.
Khoong Y — Google review
Visited in July 2025 Back in the day, the site was a stable for the troops stationed in the castle. But now the days of horse transportation is long gone and it has been repurposed as a tourist center. The Wakuwakuza museum is inside the complex as well. Due to the absence of any real food courts or shopping centers nearby and around the castle area (the city's major shopping arcade is 500+ meters away), the price of the foods here are way more expensive, borderline tourist trap level even. That being said, there are some items I found interesting. For instance, there is one stall that sells anything horse meat, from croquette, sausage on skewer, and even sushi. Forgot to ask whether the latter is grilled or raw horse meat on sushi rice (seems to be on the former). Another sells some Kumamon-shaped cake with some filling. AFAIK there's one shuttle bus running between the place and Kumamoto Station.

The Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Crafts Center is a showcase of local handicrafts, featuring traditional metalwork, ceramics, woodwork, bamboo crafts, dyeing and weaving, paper products, and traditional toys. Visitors can explore the creative output of generations of local artisans. However, it's important to note that the items are for sale and may be on the pricier side. The center is not recommended for young children who may have trouble resisting touching the delicate crafts.

A fascinating museum to learn and appreciate the history and aesthetics of Kumamoto’s handicraft and artisans! But it might be a bit commercial to some people’s liking as the museum seemed to place too much emphasis on the business instead of promotion of the local arts! But I must frankly admit that priciness aside, the items sold in souvenirs store were beyond beautiful!
007Decky — Google review
Nice examples of handmade goods, which you can also buy. Of course price is a bit higher. They offered me here free coffee with a small cake which was a nice surprise.

Kumamoto City Hall may not seem like a must-see attraction, but it offers free access to an observation deck on the fourteenth floor that provides stunning views of the city, including the iconic Kumamoto Castle. Visitors can enjoy photo opportunities and panoramic vistas of downtown Kumamoto from this vantage point. Despite being a government building rather than a tourist spot, tourists are welcome to visit without any formalities or fees. The friendly and accommodating staff further enhance the experience.
It was good to visit for free to see the city view from the top!

Great to go to the top floor for a quick look at the castle and surrounding area. Free. However couldn't go outside, so it's behind a window.

Just walk in, take elevator to 14F, no need to ask anyone. And enjoy some time to see Kumamoto city. Maybe only 10-15mins. What impressed me is the city government allowing tourist to come without any procedure or policy. I really appreciate such trust and openness. The view is ok. As it is not high enough. But still can see far stretch of the city. I also recommend venture into B1 to see city government canteen, I didn’t eat it but I think anyone could? Not sure though.
KeoneEwe Y — Google review
Until now I’ve only ever had easy and quick interactions at city hall, even with receiving the My Number card the first time, but today was a terrible experience. After receiving my new Residence Card I went to city hall to update my My Number Card as instructed the last time I was there. However, it was never stated, is not clearly specified on any of the documents or the Kumamoto city website, that you must do so before the expiry of the card. I was instructed the last time that as soon as I received the card, I should come to City Hall. The discussion of this point, my liability and the explanation from the City Hall staff then became the basis of our disagreement. The head staff of the My Number department was incredibly rude and dismissive. The red tape that binds procedure at this office is appalling and the staff were completely unhelpful. Be aware that they look down on foreigners and are very unhelpful unless you are 100% fluent.

Located in Mifune, a 30-minute drive from Kumamoto City, the Mifune Dinosaur Museum is a compact yet fascinating attraction. Established in 1998, it showcases remarkable dinosaur fossils and models discovered at the excavation sites in Mifune. The museum features skeletons, models, and fossils of various dinosaurs, including a popular T-Rex model.
A little far from the city center, but worth the long bus ride. Perfect place if you're traveling with dinosaur-loving kids. The lobby's collection looks magnificent! Special events take place from time to time, currently it's Pokemon in the summer 2024.
Jason H — Google review
The exhibit is pretty cool. On the other hand, I just find them too compact with each other. They are too close and were put in a room together. The other exhibit is not so special though. You can buy the regular ticket without the special exhibition. Still a good place for those who love dinosaurs so much. The staff is friendly and tries to communicate with us though they could not speak much English. Came on a weekday so not so many people. Since the place is not so big, it wouldn't be nice visiting it with tons of people.
Liberius 1 — Google review
500¥ for an adult! Small but packed musuem about dinosaurs! Their sister musuem is in Montana, USA. Enjoyed both floors of fossils. Most displays are in Japanese, I used Google translate. There is free parking next to musuem.
Yuuki A — Google review
We went here for it was my son’s birthday and he loves dinosaurs. The entrance fee is reasonable. Two types of entrance fees though, on these side the amount is 500yen for an adult and free for 3 yrs below(for as far as i remember). On the other side where there are robots and some activities for elementary students, it raises up to a thousand plus. Maybe when my kid grows a little bit older, we might visit again and also check the dino robot side. Oh and better eat something before visiting the place, because there’s no near family restaurant or no fine place to eat heavy meals. Also no other fine sites and this museum doesn’t have a parking lot, and no pay parking around too😅 we just parked a quite bit in city hall’s parking lot.

This is a very cool museum. They have plenty of great fossils to check out. The staff are very nice and it's only 500 yen. It's worth seeing if you're nearby.

Pretty awesome place to pay a visit with family! Cool playground for kids. Although it is not a big museum for the dinosaurs fossils, it is still a good place to take a visit. Perfect sized place for young kids. The detail and flow of the museum was great. The staff was wonderfully cordial and helpful. When I was struggling with my baby, one offered to hold her as I adjusted my carrier and then cleaned up her spit up on me as I put her back in her carrier... Located in the Shinshigai Shopping Street of Kumamoto's city center, Katsuretsu Tei is a well-known pork cutlet eatery. The restaurant is popular among locals for its high-quality pork dishes. While some diners found the pork loin to be tender but slightly dry, others were less impressed with the deep-fried oysters.
This Tonkatsu is truly Michelin-worthy. Absolutely delicious! The pork was clearly properly bled, so there’s no unpleasant smell. Even though they used a tougher cut of meat, it was surprisingly tender — you can really feel how much care the chef puts into it.
Google J — Google review
The fries pork (Set 1) and pork with ginger soy sauce are superb yummy !!! The fried pork skin is very crispy and inside is incredibly soft !! The rice and raw cabbage are free to have more if you are not enough! What a wonderful diner !
Lili E — Google review
Atsuage Kurobuta roast-katsu zen is superb. Katsu is tender and juicy with the right amount of fat to meat ratio. White rice is fluffy and goes very well with the katsu. Only downside is the cabbage which isn’t as juicy and refreshing.
Randy N — Google review
I was really skeptical before dining as the reviews were mixed. Came at 445pm and there’s still a queue. Waited for about 30 mins for the table and 20 mins for food. Theres plenty of empty seats but not enough staff to clear the tables and move the queue. There’s also 150 yen difference between English menu and Japanese menu. So we referred to the Japanese menu. The meat was surprisingly tender and melt in your mouth. Wasn’t expecting the tenderness. Worth the experience if you don’t mind waiting. Come early! And by 8pm all the queue slots would have been snapped up
Grace T — Google review
Whilst i’m not a Tonkatsu person, this has got to be the best i’ve ever eaten so far. The selection of condiments and sauces that pairs super well with the katsu is amazing, it’s having a totally different taste profile unlock every single bite. I went early dinner, so there wasn’t much of a queue, but it does take awhile after being seated for the main to arrive - but was it worth the wait? Totally! Definitely will return whenever i’m back in Kumamoto!
Daniel L — Google review
Absolutely worth the wait! Although the queue usually takes around an hour, I was lucky to get a seat within 20 minutes. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy inside — one of the best I’ve ever had in Japan. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves authentic tonkatsu!
Joon T — Google review
The Tonkatsu served here is absolutely delicious, the pork cutlet is cooked just right retaining the softness and juiciness on the inside with a light crispy batter on the outside 😋 You must try this if you are in Kumamoto!
KC C — Google review
Went for lunch. There was a queue, but it moved fast. Note that lunch sets are only in the Japanese menu. The Roppaku Kurubuta lunch set is more expensive than the other lunch sets, but it was worth it. It was the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had—it almost felt like the wagyu beef of pork. The cutlet was very crisp, while the fillet had just the right amount of fat

A bustling shopping street, which comes to life all the more at night. Enjoyable strolls down the stretch!

Date visited: late Jun 2025. Most of the shops are restaurants- fried stuffs and resulted in oily smell along the arcade. Couple of Pachinko shops. Couple of shops selling stuffs. One shop similar to Dunkee shop duty free. Couple of medical duty free shops. Anyway nothing really interesting to shop. Most shop close at 7 pm-8pm. There is McDonald along the arcade. Quite disappointed as the arcade is filled with cooking oil smells - overnight cooking oil smell. I just want to leave as fast as possible. I thought would be better in other section but sad to say due to many stores are restaurants selling fried stuffs, the smells just stay along the entire arcade. There is nothing interesting to take pictures for this arcade.

We visited a number of shopping streets in Kyushu and this must be the busiest. A wide and long walking street where shops were located at both side of the alley. There were small little alleys that would lead to some local restaurants and eateries as well. The family had fun shopping here where managed to find the popular Japanese pharmacy, don don donki, some street food and even a shop selling local porcelain kitchen ware and wooden kitchen items, all made in Japan. There were some common fast food restaurant like McDonald’s and Starbucks located along this street too. I even managed to find a good taiyaki snack bar here which tasted awesome, crispy on the outside. I would say one would need to allocate at least two hours for shopping here.
Gator — Google review
Nice busy shopping street with many eateries. Me & my daughter had nice ramen at Kokutei. We also found a grocery store selling many local fruits etc. The local strawberries in season were reasonably priced & they tasted wonderful - crunchy w tinge of sweetness. Some were fairly large size so will recommend any visitors to go all out to try them

Nice place to walk around with lots of shops and restaurants. Very easy to explore, but many stores close a bit early — come in the afternoon or early evening for the best experience.

You could still find plenty of restaurants along the street even after like 8 or 9pm. Though it would be better to come and shop during the day.

Every big city has an 'outdoor' covered shopping arcade, a place to hide from the rain or escape a mid-summer sun. Plenty of shops and adventurous tiny hidden alley ways leading to small cafes and diners. 2015 and there was good public Wi-Fi so we were unable to ditch dead weight children.

Date visited end June 2025. Google map said I have reached but I didn’t see any sign. It is actually inside the same building as the shopping Centre which is located next to shopping arcade. A very small shop selling Kumamoto signature stuffs. A small stage where the bear mascot will perform at 11 and at 2pm. Enter into the shopping malls and you can see directions to reach this small shop. A very small place - in less than five minutes I am done. Things aren’t that cheap either. Kids may like it to dance with the bear. I walked around basements of the shopping malls instead to enjoy the aircon when it is so hot outside.

Come here to meet the famous mascot of Kumamoto, a black bear called Kumamon. Pokemon is yellow, Kumamon is black ... Obviously. Please check the time schedule if you want to see the live kumamon show.
Otto L — Google review
I stumbled upon this charming little shop tucked away in a quiet Japanese alley. The space is tiny, but it's absolutely packed from floor to ceiling with exquisite traditional crafts and unique souvenirs—a true feast for the eyes. You can feel the artisan's dedication in every single piece. However, be prepared for the prices. They are quite high, reflecting the incredible quality and artistry. The shop is also very narrow, so it can feel a bit cramped with just a few customers inside. It's the perfect spot to find a truly special keepsake, but not ideal for budget souvenir hunting.
Kelvin — Google review
Hordes of tourists come here to see the Kumamon show, which is more suited for kids. If you want to catch the show, be sure to check the schedule and start lining up at least 30 mins early if you want a front row spot. Outside of the show times, it feels like a generic tourist/souvenir shop.

It's not a square. It's a SMALL store. The merchandise sold here can be found elsewhere at a much cheaper price. The only interesting thing about this place is they have kumamon on stage at certain timings. This would be great for kids to greet kumamon, I supposed.

The Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto is a vibrant hub for modern art, showcasing a diverse collection of local and international works. The museum hosts cultural events and special exhibitions, including the current showcase of Tatsuya Tanaka's whimsical miniature photography. Visitors can expect thought-provoking installations and interactive displays that offer a refreshing perspective on contemporary art.
I went here during my short trip to Kumamoto. It is well accessible from the town centre. Admission fee is reasonable, and there is a special price for students. Other than exhibitions, this place also has a quite huge reading space with a live piano session (No picture allowed inside) and art supply-slash-merchandise store.
Arkan — Google review
It hs different sections where you can roam around. The special exhibit is the only one with fee it is at the right side of the reception. I think the special exhibit will only be available for few months not really sure. There is a place where you can read books, not so many things to see but I would say it is well organized and divided. You may also buy souveneir inside. Receptionists are also kind and polite. You wont hesitate to ask if you are a foreigner who could not speak Japanese. On the other hand, displays on free area are only written in Japanese. I asked the personnel if I could take photo of description to translate it and it was fine. The exhibit was really pretty and you have wide selection of souveneirs you could purchase.
Liberius 1 — Google review
Foreigner? Here's what you need to know. •Basics The exhibit features japanese artists and everything is in japanese. No photos can be taken after the entrance AND if you need to use your translator app, make sure to let the attendants (they wear IDs) know. And make aure not to sneak in any photo. The entrace is free but the special exhibit has a 1,500 Yen fee. •Content Takashi Yanase was the artist featured when I came here 25 May 25. I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it.. but as I go through the writings on the display and intentionally look at the comics, paintings and art works, I became more mesmerized. A lot of times, you don't need translator when looking at the comics (those that used to be popular back in the newspaper days). I found my self connected and able to comprehend despite not being able to fully read the text. Drawings are universal and it talks to you regardless of the language. •Time I spent more time reading and looking at the texts displayed as it tells details adn story. I didnt realize I spent around 90 minutes here and it was worth it. I was engrossed. It made me experience emotions and spend time with my self. •WiFi There is free wifi if you register online, otherwise it'll be 10-min limited. The artworks are amazing
NowWhereToGo R — Google review
It's a small museum but it is well-designed with a few works from famous artists that can be accessed by the visitors for free. Only the special exhibit has a fee. There are many souvenirs from different artists that is for sale as well.

Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Garden is a serene oasis featuring a diverse collection of over a thousand animals and an extensive variety of plants and flowers. The zoo offers a compact layout, making it ideal for families with young children to explore without getting too tired. Additionally, there are rides for small children and reasonably priced refreshments available within the zoo grounds. Situated on the picturesque edge of Ezu Lake, this attraction provides an enjoyable escape from historical sites like castles and temples.
It is a nice place, it looks clean and well kept. It's also very cheap so you can visit it on a random day. There's a little theme park inside where kids can enjoy themselves. You can also bring your own food inside, but if you don't, there's a small cafe inside where you can buy snacks and even rice meals. I enjoyed the monorail ride.. and walking around is not tiring since there's a lot of trees, and places where you could sit and rest. I recommend this for a family trip, a school trip or even a quick date.
Shiela M — Google review
A very exquisite and compact zoo and botanical garden, with some amusement facilities inside. Most rides cost around 200 yen per turn, making it quite worth a visit. However, the facilities inside could use an upgrade. If the goal is to reduce staff by using automated ticket machines, then the machines should be updated. Foreign visitors may not be able to distinguish between old and new banknotes, leading to long waits only to find out they cannot use them. This greatly affects the overall experience.
Rocky W — Google review
Great place to see animals and they are well taken care of. Animals looked relaxed and not stressed out. Great place to take kids! Signs are in Japanese. 200¥ a car for parking. Oddly no stamp rally at the zoo.
Yuuki A — Google review
i visited several zoos in the past and i know that there are many zoos that display more animal variations but i like this zoo. for me it is enough for whole family entertainment. we can walk around and watch animals in their cage. they even put some animals like monkey in open area, but surround it with mini river so they can't jump across. there are also a big garden where we can walk around in quiet and peaceful moment. in the center part, there are some rides for the kids like train and ferris wheel, also several others. we have a good time here 😊
Lenny L — Google review
I genuinely love the place, so please don’t get me wrong. But I do feel that the living conditions for some of the animals really need improvement. When I visited this zoo, I was heartbroken by how small and poorly maintained the enclosures were — the lions were roaring nonstop, and their space was extremely limited. All the animals look sad, the bears, the polar bears, the lions and tigers, the monkeys.. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind paying a higher entrance fee if it meant giving these animals a more comfortable, enriching environment to live in.
Rachel O — Google review
Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a pleasant destination for families, couples, and nature lovers. It combines a mid-sized zoo with a botanical garden, making it an enjoyable half-day outing. 🐅 Zoo Highlights The zoo houses a variety of animals—lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, and native Japanese species. Enclosures are smaller compared to larger, modern zoos, but the staff clearly care for the animals. Kids especially love the petting area and small rides inside the park. 🌿 Botanical Gardens The botanical garden section features seasonal flowers, a greenhouse, and landscaped walking paths. In spring, cherry blossoms make it a perfect picnic spot. There are also shaded areas for resting. 🏔 Scenic Bonus From some parts of the park, you can enjoy a view of Mt. Aso on clear days, adding a unique Kumamoto touch to your visit. 🚍 Access & Tips > About 30 minutes by tram from central Kumamoto City. > Entry fee is affordable. > Food stalls and vending machines are available, but you can also bring your own picnic.
Arif A — Google review
BUY CHOPPER STATUE FIGURE HERE. (cash only) You do not need to pay for zoo entry to view the statue or purchase the figures. Like many zoo/animal experiences in Japan, we decided not to visit. Animal welfare is sadly not always top priority at these places (enclosures are bare, made of plain concrete, no enrichment is provided and the animals are usually very stressed or depressed) so it's important to check the reviews and photos before you visit anywhere with animals in Japan.
Sten E — Google review
Someone said it was a mid sized zoo. Well it is definitely not, it very small and all enclosures are also small. They also put a lot of the animals by thenselves even if there multiple of the specie. I can understand it to prevent breeding but you can also use contraption and keep them together and then also allow for a bigger enclosure. If I knew it would be this small I would not have paid for a ticket to support this. Most of the animals were sleeping/laying around as they can't do anything and the bear was just mindlessly walking circles in his enclosure.

Izumi Shrine is a serene and historic shrine located within Suizenji Jojuen Garden in Kumamoto. Founded in 1878 by former retainers of the Kumamoto domain, the shrine was established to pray for the reconstruction of the city after the Satsuma Rebellion. It enshrines the spirits of past lords of the Higo domain, including Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yusai) and his wife Gracia. Visitors to the shrine can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the garden, take part in seasonal events, and explore the cultural sites within the area. Wakuwakuza, Kumamotojo museum offers a variety of ways to learn about the history and significance of Kumamoto Castle. The second floor features a VR theater showcasing 3D images of the castle before it was damaged by an earthquake, along with videos detailing its history and defensive features. The museum also delves into the Satsuma rebellion and the aftermath of the 2016 earthquake through interactive exhibits and videos.
As an able-bodied person, I'd rate the experience here 3 or 4 stars. But considering the lengths they went to to ensure it was accessible to those with disabilities, I have to give it 5 stars. We saw visitors in motorized wheelchairs being able to tour the castle, which was wonderful. There is an elevator inside as well, and places to sit. The displays are interesting and there is a view of the city at the top. There are QR codes posted throughout to help people read a translation of the information posted. That being said, if you are someone able to walk and climb stairs, I highly recommend visiting Matsuyama Castle - incredible experience as you get to walk around the actual castle on the old wood and it feels more like you're in a castle. This castle experience definitely feels more like a museum. Still very lovely and lots of history behind it.

The Kumamoto Castle Museum Wakuwakuza is a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese history, culture, or the samurai era. Located near the iconic Kumamoto Castle, this museum offers a fun and immersive way to learn about the rich heritage of the region. One of the highlights is the opportunity to try on traditional samurai armor and kimono, which makes for great photos and unforgettable memories. The interactive exhibits are engaging for both adults and children, with hands-on displays, historical reenactments, and multimedia presentations that bring Kumamoto’s past to life. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and many speak some English, which makes the experience even more enjoyable for international visitors. There’s also a small but well-curated gift shop with local crafts and souvenirs. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a unique cultural experience, the Wakuwakuza Museum is definitely worth a visit. Pair it with a walk around Kumamoto Castle for a perfect day of sightseeing!

100% recommend to have a walk especially for family visit/interactive way to know about the history and culture. The animation(half cartoon) at 2/F HIGHlY recommended to watch, many craftsmanship and Japanese traditional art are used for the production, you can find your own way to enjoy no matter the age. The staff are professional and comprehend the whole experience.

Comes with a package ticket for the castle. If you buy the 2 attractions package, this is only 50 yen. They utilize very cool projections to show the earthquake damage on the castle. There are also some history quizzes and games, along with sort of a cardboard cutout show. A few live cameras you can look at as well as some photo op places.
ItzMe — Google review
Visited in July 2025 The more hands-in, all-age exhibition of the Kumamoto history compared to that in the castle keep. The access is included if one buys the ticket for the museum and the castle (850 yen). The collection and exhibition aren't big, but can be enjoyed by the entire family. For example, the photo set with kimono for a family of four (or more?) and the horse replica with its traditional decoration. The second floor has this VR-enabled documentaries showing - be sure to check the schedule of the viewing.

Recommended place to visit. You can wear Japanese costume and take picture for free. There are movies which has English subtitle talking about Japanese culture.

There's a reason why this exhibit is only an additional 50 yen with your Kumamoto ticket purchase. It's got a whole bunch of neat little interactive exhibits, but they are really geared more towards children and Japanese vistors. Not a whole lot going on, but there are some novel spots. The theatre on the 2nd floor is a nice place to relax.

SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto is a vibrant and modern shopping complex located in the heart of Kumamoto city. It features a diverse range of brand-name stores, dining options, and even a rooftop park. Visitors can enjoy a unique shopping experience with various shops to explore. The complex also houses a Kumamon shop, perfect for fans of the popular mascot. Additionally, SAKURA MACHI serves as a central hub with its bus terminal connecting the city center to all corners of Kumamoto.
We used this mall as our car park for our day trip to Kumamoto City. In front of the mall there were some food stalls set up for some kind of rice festival when we were there. On our way home we bought some fresh produce from the supermarket. Nicely laid out mall.
Alshane — Google review
Sakuramachi is a convenient location for locals, travelers, and shoppers alike. It offers a great balance of shopping, relaxation, and transport convenience, making it a one-stop destination for everyone. What sets it apart is the rooftop garden which features a massive Kumamon, Kumamoto Prefecture’s famous mascot. Kumamoto’s beloved mascot adds a fun and instagram-worthy element. This and the green space add a special touch that makes Sakuramachi unique. However, one issue often pointed out is the parking space, which is quite expensive. But despite this setback, it is still a highly recommended spot for locals and tourists.

Loved this place very much! Went many times during our 4-day stay in Kumamoto. Kids did their painting on the car and bus as part of the game in front of the building.

During my visit to Kumamoto, have visited the Sakuramachi place very convenient location with Kumamoto Castle in the near by and it is very of the center point for the tourist as well as local people to relax, do the shopping and enjoy the food. When I visited, there was Taiwan fare going on just outside the place and it was very energetic atmosphere. Must visit the place when there, during the June timings you can see the Hydrangea flowers and an amazing rooftop view of the Kumamoto castle as well.

Perfect place to hang around! What i loved the most is, There’s a lot of restaurants to eat too! depends on your type 😜
Jydee D — Google review
End June 2025. It is excellent place with strategic location- it is near the shopping arcade, the castle and some other tourist spots. It itself is a shopping mall with food court, supermarket and restaurants. Better still it is connected to bus terminals where you can take buses to airport and couple of other places. It has a rooftop garden where you can enjoy walking around and look at different views. There is also an eatery shop in the garden and a small interesting shallow pool for kids to play with water. Entrance is free✌️. Koko hotel is together with this shopping mall. There is a tram stop just next to this mall. You can find Daisu shop in here too.
SiewHong P — Google review
Sakura Machi Mall has various shops inside it. In my country, malls are really big but I dont know if it is already considered big in Japan. I like the fact that this is not just a building but it has trees and plants too. You can enjoy your favorite drink outside there are seats provided and on the top floor is a playground for children and a place where you could relax while seeing nature. Occasionally, there are exhibits of food stalls outside the mall where you can enjoy food, music and other stuff. Toilets are clean too and there are wide selection of food in the B1. Bus Terminals are also very reliable, it has an updated schedule and signages are everywhere. I would say it is a foreigner- friendly mall, signages are in English and announcements are in English, Korean and Chinese.

Coffee shop
Kitagawa Tenmendo is a renowned traditional Japanese sweet shop that specializes in wagashi, which are traditional Japanese sweets designed to be enjoyed with tea. These sweets are made from ingredients like azuki (red beans), mochi (rice), and fruit, and are known for their simple yet elegant flavors. The presentation of these treats is considered an art form, making them not only delicious but also visually stunning.
Tenmeido was a wonderful experience. We booked the sweets making workshop by phone. Although the master was absent at the time, his daughter (who speaks English and Spanish and manages the business) went out and above to make sure we could still participate during our single day in Kumamoto - she invited the master of another cafe nearby and friend of her father, who trained us how to make flowers and clementines. Everything was so genuine, beautiful and sweet that we couldn't leave unhappy!
Daniel L — Google review
Kitagawa Tenmeidou is a shop you must visit if you are in the area for dessert lovers. Wagashis, beautifully crafted into seasonal motifs, entices the eyes first then swiftly melts in your mouth; and makes one think, ah, this must be how happiness tastes like. You almost don't want to eat them because they are so pretty. The chocolate Swiss roll fluffy and filled with a light cream, with some cocoa nibs within; the pudding smooth and silky with a fragrant caramel sauce which was not too sweet; a perfect match with black coffee / matcha. Unfortunately we could not try everything in one seating. We however managed picked up souvenirs and their strawberry daifuku, sake castella cake, and several others for takeaway. All are outstanding. The goods are freshly made, one should observe the expiry dates that are clearly shown. They also offer wagashi classes for those who are interested. Very friendly and helpful grandma and daughter!
Benjamin A — Google review
Not just a lovely Japanese sweets and cake shop. You can also do a really fun and memorable wagashi making experience here! We got to make 2 different nerikiri wagashi and had a display of wagashi making from Mr Kitagawa (the master of the shop) then enjoyed his beautiful wagashi with matcha tea. Mr Kitagawa's daughter can speak Spanish and English so it was very easy to make a booking. (Just send an email through the website)

Super delicious wagashi, tea and cakes, as well as lots of pre-packaged desserts and gift sets to take home. They have a lovely tea room in the back where you can eat as well. I also did the wagashi class and it was amazing! A master craftsman with 50 years experience teaches you how to make two wagashi based on seasonal shapes. Takes about an hour and you get to have some there and take what you made home. Super great experience, would recommend (they can also translate to English and Spanish)

Kumamoto Castle Park (Ninomaru Hiroba) is a must-visit 17th-century castle complex surrounded by a lush park, famous for its cherry blossom festival. The park offers various attractions such as concerts, samurai displays, and food fairs, providing an immersive experience at no cost. Despite the 2016 earthquake damage, ongoing reconstruction efforts have turned it into an evolving experience.
Need to find out is open for visit otherwise not able to enter the castle. Usually is available 2nd weekend of the month. Meantime there is lots of reconstruction needs to be done.

(castles visited: over 60+) One of the best castle experiences I've had in Japan. It's a shame that the 2016 earthquake destroyed the castle, but they have turned the tragedy and reconstruction into an evolving experience. As of March 2021 they have fixed a great deal for the damage, but you can also see how much extensive damage still exists. The park is amazing and beautiful with new structures allow people to walk around the ninomaru and get fairly close to the honmaru. There is a new museam detailing the history of the castle and the damage and reconstruction. Most castles visits and one and done. This is one I will be glad to come back to every year or so to see how things changing (I just moved here yesterday).

Ferry service
Kumamoto Ferry, also known as Ocean Arrow, is a fast and efficient mode of transportation connecting Kumamoto and Shimabara city in Nagasaki prefecture. The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes, offering passengers a quick and convenient way to cross the channel. The fare for adults is 1000 yen, while children in elementary school and below pay 500 yen for a one-way trip.
It was a nice way to start the day's ride. Wasn't crowded at 7am Sunday. Easy to buy a ticket, but I had to stand in the parking lot holding my bicycle while waiting to board, my beer losing it's chill. They politely tied down my bicycle for the hour ride across the bay. Pulling into the port in Shimabara was a whole new town so that was cool. I know it was just a boat ride but it was fun, something unique to me (but everywhere here) that I'll try to do next summer. 2023

Kumamoto Ferry offers a quick and pleasant way to travel between Kumamoto and Shimabara in Nagasaki Prefecture. The “Ocean Arrow” high-speed ferry takes only about 30 minutes, making it much faster than regular ferries while still giving passengers a relaxing sea journey. ⛴ What I liked > Spacious and clean seating areas, including comfortable indoor cabins. > Beautiful ocean views, especially on clear days when you can see Mt. Unzen. > Onboard amenities like vending machines, toilets, and a small shop. > Efficient boarding and disembarking process. 📍 Location advantage The terminal is easy to reach by car or bus from central Kumamoto, and parking is available nearby.

Luxury Ferry from Kumamoto to Nagasaki. You can save your road trip with this shortcut. You can make the pre-reservation on web. There is snack and luxury sofa for family on third floor.
Kriengchai V — Google review
Good experience. Efficient and fast way to cross the channel between Kumamoto and Nagasaki. Human passengers just need to arrive 30min beforehand. Drivers(car roro) need to arrive at least 2hours before for security clearance(please confirm). We had to take a taxi from Kumamoto downtown as public bus frequency was unclear. We tried to take the free shuttle but instructions (pickup location) only in Japanese. Short 30min ride in winter, the seagulls are the highlight! Feed them.
Andy L — Google review
Easy to reserve a ticket (online or by phone). Easy to board (with car). Takes an hour to cross the bay. The ferry has outdoor area to sit and indoor. There is a snack bar place as well if you need it.
R D — Google review
It was very orderly and efficient in moving the cars and bikes on board. Reasonable price. Refreshment available on board. There is a little cafe inside the terminal building, and a restaurant if you walk a bit further. If you drive or ride, arrive early to secure a position. Arrive, park following the queue, get a paper from the staff, walk into the terminal and buy a ticket. Go back to the car before the supposed time, drive on board, walk up to the passenger deck, go down again when almost arrive. No complaints at all.
Kilo N — Google review
Smooth, fast and comfortable interiors. Serves drinks inside. Has a garage below deck for people to park their cars and get off at the other port. Top deck view is pretty nice depending on weather and time of day.

You can choose from. You can easily select from your tablet. There are some restaurants specializing in tonkatsu that are delicious, but Hamakatsu is just as delicious and I think the cost performance is high considering the price. I visited Lake Ezu on a warm spring afternoon, and it was the perfect way to slow down. The lake sparkled in the sunlight, framed by trees just beginning to bloom. Locals were out enjoying the fresh air — walking, relaxing, and best of all, boating on the calm waters. Renting a boat here adds a lovely touch to the experience. Whether you’re paddling gently across the lake or just drifting and soaking in the view, it’s peaceful and surprisingly refreshing. Ducks glide past, birds call overhead, and the city feels a world away. Lake Ezu blends the charm of nature with just the right touch of activity. Buddhist temple
Gohyakurakan is a serene and picturesque destination that offers a delightful stroll leading to a charming cave. The highlight of the experience is the enchanting path adorned with 500 Buddha statues dating back to 1790-1803. This historical site, known for its association with 'the five rings,' provides visitors with an opportunity for peaceful reflection and appreciation of ancient artistry.
Beautiful walk to a small cave or seclusion. The cave is neat but the walk through the 500 Buddhas from 1790-1803 is the best part.

(Translated by Google) I came to Reigan Cave for the first time in a long time and saw the stone Buddha of the 500 Arhats again. I was relieved to see that the shrine had not changed, but before, the path to the shrine was full of weeds, but today the grass had been cut neatly. It appears to have been developed as a tourist destination. By the way, I would like to request that the stone Buddha statue, which is particularly damaged, be repaired. I want this cultural heritage to be cherished.
