Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
Huis Ten Bosch, located in northern Kyushu, is a sprawling theme park that replicates the charm of a 17th-century Dutch village. The park features traditional European-style hotels, restaurants, museums, windmills, and gardens. Additionally, visitors can explore an owl forest, enjoy gondola rides and high-tech light shows, experience virtual reality attractions and even skate on an illuminated ice rink.
Visiting Huis Ten Bosch during Christmas was like stepping into a European winter fairy tale! The entire park transforms into a glowing wonderland, with millions of LED lights covering buildings, trees, and canals — it’s easily one of the most beautiful illuminations in Japan. There’s a giant Christmas tree in the center plaza that lights up in sync with music, and the seasonal decorations throughout the Dutch-style town add a festive, cozy vibe. Everywhere you walk, there’s holiday music playing softly in the background, creating a warm and cheerful atmosphere. The Christmas Market stalls sell warm treats like hot cocoa, mulled wine, roasted meats, and festive desserts. You can also shop for unique ornaments and European-style holiday gifts. The parades and performances feel very special during the holidays, especially when paired with fireworks in the evening. If you go, dress warmly — it’s chilly, especially by the water! I recommend staying until after dark to really enjoy the lights. It’s perfect for couples, families, or anyone wanting to get into the holiday spirit. Huis Ten Bosch at Christmas is unforgettable — 100% worth the trip!

A magical place in Japan that transports you to Europe. Unlike most of Japan's theme parks, this one is not that crowded. It has rides and attractions suitable for all ages, also has team lab attractions which I enjoyed. The flower theme changes every month. It was rose season when we visited. Since the area is wide, it would be better to plan your visit ahead. Advisable for a full day visit. There is also a wide selection of restaurants and food stalls available, including affordable ones just outside the entrance (such as Ringerhut).

Trip Highlight in Fukuoka! Our day here was the highlight of our Fukuoka vacation! Our family thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and rides—there’s so much to see, do, explore, and eat. We visited on a weekday, so it wasn’t very crowded, and we were able to enter most attractions with ease. The place is beautiful, well-maintained, and very organized. Staff were friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. I took a break at one of the coffee shops, and was pleasantly surprised by how good the coffee and food were. We also did the boat ride during sunset, and it was absolutely wonderful—a peaceful and scenic way to end the day. Definitely a must-try, esp for families and groups!

Huis Ten Bosch – A beautiful experience for all ages! Huis Ten Bosch is truly a place where everyone can find something to enjoy — whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or on your own. The atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxing, surrounded by stunning European-style architecture and seasonal flowers that make every corner picture-perfect. I loved almost all of the attractions, especially the Blue Anchor Gallery — it’s an absolute must-visit! The exhibits are beautifully curated, offering both inspiration and insight. You’ll definitely leave with lasting memories. A wonderful destination that blends culture, fun, and beauty — highly recommended for anyone visiting Kyushu! 🌷🏰

This place is big and fun. There are bicycle rental for 3000¥, 1 hr later 1000¥. There is a sightseeing boat from Welcome gate to Canal city ( not in hakata) . We waited 30 minutes for the Zipline. It was very fun and adventurous! There was also a bus from the gate to Attractions. There are some good restaurants everywhere. A shooting game is near the pier ( I didn't win any :( ) At the attraction town, there's a chocolate shop with a challenge. The VR took 25 minutes but it last only 3 minutes. Inside the hotel, there's a french buffet all you can eat, for only 16.800¥ 2 adults 1 child. There are two inside playground for children, the other one which is more tech, needs to wait 45 minutes :/. Other games to average 20 minutes. There is also a 90 meter ferris wheel 🎡. A water park is included too! A fishing game is inside a mall. My family won the first and second place!!. At 20:10, near the water park there is a light show that lasts 10 minutes and fireworks at 9 PM . I recommend you to not use map, it may be a little hard but It will be fun finding places! But from huis ten Bosch station, since 8 30 pm I didn't see the huis tên bosch express for Hakata station
Binh N — Google review
Such a fun and quirky theme park, some parts feels like you are transported directly to Amsterdam, yet a keen eye may spot some differences. The activities in the park will keep young and older kids entertained for a whole day, and eateries on site while more expensive than the cities are reasonable for a theme park. Easy access by direct train from Fukuoka. Bear the crowd by visiting on a weekday.
Charles Y — Google review
Huis Ten Bosch feels weirdly surreal, like someone just dropped a piece of Europe straight into Japan and it actually works. The tall, gothic-style tower and the canal lined with Dutch-style buildings (pic 1 & 4) make you double-take—are we in Nagasaki or the Netherlands? The red umbrellas along the water give everything a laid-back, almost holiday-resort vibe. Wandering around, you spot things like a classic windmill reflected perfectly in a still canal (pic 3), and huge hotel buildings that look straight out of a European postcard (pic 2). It's all very clean, slightly artificial, but honestly kind of fun. You can get a coffee by the water and just watch the boats drift by. If you want to take a break from the usual Japan scenery and see some quirky, detailed recreations, this spot is definitely worth a visit. Good place for random photos and a change of pace, even if you end up wondering “where am I again?” half the time.

Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort in Sasebo, Japan is a waterfront complex known for its stunning coastline and rich cultural influences. Visitors can explore an aquarium, shop at various stores, dine at restaurants, and enjoy boat rides. The resort hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the winter oyster festival featuring flavorful oysters and the annual Yosakoi Sasebo festival in autumn.
This sea cruise is actually really fun and if you happen to be considering it, do it! I went on a clear day in December and the weather was about 58, so it was totally fine. The boat itself is spacious with tons of seats, but you can also go out on the deck and up in a very small crows nest — elevated by about ten spiral steps. It’s not super high but it’s a cool view and I was surprised it was freely open to the public. Small snacks and some drinks and souvenirs are sold on the boat, and there is comprehensive English audio for the island tour. Honestly this compares very favorably to Matsushima in Sendai, I liked this a lot better even though this is not nearly as famous.
John B — Google review
I really liked the experience. I went there on Tuesday, and there were still a lot of tourists. Luckily, I managed to get on the cruise ahead of time, as it departs every hour and the trip lasts 50 minutes.
Rhea — Google review
A relaxing hour-long boat ride that thoughtfully presented the beautiful islands. Can go up onto the deck for an elevated view. There are toilets, gift corners, and drinks corners on board.
Karen H — Google review
Fast ship, well organized, clean facilities. Waiting area was climatised with free wifi. The tour itself was beautiful. We had quite a lot of exhaust to inhale but it was worth it nonetheless.
Margot E — Google review
Gorgeous islands and a lovely cruise with multiple languages which helped us understand the cruise better. It was worth every minute of our 45 minute cruise. Gorgeous view of the islands and sea.
Venus L — Google review
Loved the 99 island boat trip. So relaxing and you could see all the oyster farms
Lyn Q — Google review
Excellent views, I enjoyed every bit of it, all the aquatic animals were healthy

The boat ride was well worth the visit. Beautiful place cruising around the small islands, and interesting how the big boat can turn around on a very small inlet; almost like a Disney boat ride on rails under the water.

The Tenkaiho Observatory is a popular hilltop lookout point in Sasebo, offering stunning views of approximately 200 Kujūku Islands. It is known for its colorful flowers, with rape blossoms in spring and cosmos in fall attracting many visitors. The observatory provides panoramic views of the entire Kujuku Islands and is favored for its sunset views, especially during the spring and fall months when canola fields and fall foliage are particularly beautiful.
One of the best sunset views I’ve ever seen. It’s a quiet park, with an observatory deck where you have a full view in all angles. On one side, you can see Sasebo city and the harbor, and the other side has the seaside sunset with several island scattered in the sea. There are some more far away islands near the end of the sights, making the scene even more interesting. Overall, this is a great spot to enjoy sunset.

We took taxi from cruise port to get to the 99 islands and made reservation with the driver to come pick us up in 2 hours, because the public transportation was not convenient. What an amazing experience looking at these varieties of small islands, the most beautiful bay in the world!

For a breathtaking 360-degree view of Sasebo and its surrounding islands, make your way to the Ishidake Observatory Perched high in a tower, this vantage point offers unparalleled vistas, especially during sunset and the golden hour. Accessible by car or motorcycle, with an option for an adventurous bicycle ride, reaching the observatory involves a scenic but challenging 300-meter walk from the parking lot.
Beautiful view, very quiet. A short walk from the parking area through the canopy. We liked it a lot.
Margot E — Google review
Absolutely stunning view. Unfortunately the 300m pathway to the top is slippery, muddy, and full of stones / steps. Definitely not suitable for people with mobility issues. No facilities on site (toilets, vending machines, etc). The lookout tower has definitely seen better days, and could do with some maintenance and a good clean. Free admission, and plenty of parking. The weather wasn’t fantastic when I went, but was still a great experience overall. Had the whole place to myself. Definitely worth a visit if you’re physically able and in the area.
Evalyn V — Google review
Visited about 8.30 am on a sunday. Nobody was there. So, enjoyied the view without disturbance. While i was there, people staeted to arrive. There was not much space for more than 10-15 at a time.
Mahesh — Google review
Free admission, opened daily and closes at 2100. Once you arrive at the small parking lot, you'll have to walk about 300 meters up the stone and muddy (if it just rained) walkway. A little bit of a challenge, don't wear heels, make sure to wear boots or sneakers No wheelchair or handicap parking, not recommended for the elderly or handicapped. There isn't a toilet available in the area, the toilet is located at the bottom of the hill at Mori Kirara, which is the Botanical gardens/Zoo. The climb to the top ain't easy. There's a small area with a beautiful view just below the observation deck. Climbing up the stairway to the top you'll get a wonderful view of the area, it's a breathtaking experience. Recommend to travel here on a clear day and don't go after a rainy day.
Jay J — Google review
This is a peaceful beautiful location. I walked from a distance away, but there is easy parking and the climb is very easy and clean. Perfect place for a picnic lunch with a stunning view.
Trish D — Google review
Beautiful view. I caught it on a clear spring day and it was wonderful. Much better than Matsushima in Miyagi. Word of warning: there's only one road up and down so be careful, drivers, walkers, and bikers.
Frank N — Google review
Beautiful place to enjoy the sunset....when the day soo sunny you can see the sunset from here...but the place is quiet far from the bus stop if you walk...There's no public transportation to go until the car park...you better go there by car or motorcycle...or if you want more exciting experience...you can go by bicycle...even though the road is not easy for it but i think it will be unforgetable and your effort will be paid after you arrived there and saw the sunset....very-very beautiful....and make it sure the weather is not cloudy or rain
Shmily H — Google review
Absolutely beautiful location! My husband and I saw so much of the area we are calling home. It was breath-taking and well worth the trip. The small hike up to the observation tower was very nice too.

Hamburger restaurant
Sasebo Burger Big Man Kamikyomachi Main Store is a renowned establishment in Sasebo, Japan, known for its iconic Sasebo Burger. This famous dish originated in 1950 when locals learned to make burgers from residents of the naval base. Over time, it evolved into the city's signature comfort food.
ordered the burger king, the bacon was chewy but not too oily, seasoned well and smoky, should be the highlight of the meal. also liked the eggs they added. we were planning to visit c&b nearby (was really tasty that we came back to revisit), big man was another vibe but also really impressing, there’s not a lot of seats inside though
Emma C — Google review
Very underwhelming! I tried this place based on reviews and ended up disappointed at both the burger size and quality of taste. Bland patty, cold unmelted cheese slice, and the only positive is that they put in a decent amount of greens between the buns. The staff / employees were nice and helpful, hence service is 5star...but the product itself is nowhere near what an ideal burger should be - google US Burger in Fukuoka for an example of a Kyushu burger joint that sells much better-tasting burgers. To be fair, the french fries here were very good, much much better than the burger. The seasoning was subtle yet defined and the fries remained crispy despite being delivered before the burgers and consumed only after the burgers were eaten. I would only come to this place for the fries and not the burgers.
Router — Google review
It is a small shop with only 14 seats, it is clampy, no extra room to maneuver. But it don't refrain me for having a good burger and fries. The piping hot fries just from the fryer and the tasty, juicy huge burger pack with lettuce, cheese, ham and egg. Luckily for me when I enter the shop there is a table for 4 waiting for me, if not I am sure need to wait a long time for the burger. But anyway it worth to wait.
Charles — Google review
Delicious! I’m so glad that I picked this burger place from many places. The bacon was smoky and flavorful, burger patties were juicy and buns were just perfect. French fries were freshly fried. Amazing! Highly recommended!
Mayumi S — Google review
Though the burger was excellent, the wait to get the burger was absurd. We waited for 20-25 minutes just for a table to open up, with several people happily chatting on the few available tables, then another 10 minutes for the food to come out. Just not worth the wait.
Andres S — Google review
Got the Special Burger, onion rings, and black iced coffee. It was a bit expensive compared to a similar quality Japanese meal, but I wanted to try at least one burger in Sasebo. Came before 10 am and the shop was already 3/4 full. The burger was made to order and it was good, especially considering the price --- if I compare this to NYC pricing. For me to get a similar burger in NYC, the price would be at least 2.5x and the service would probably be far worse. The onion rings were the stand-out. Very tasty, not overly salty, and perfectly crisp. Small, but interesting atmosphere and it was cool to see American kitsch culture in the context of a US naval base town in Japan. I would come back again to try a different kind of burger and the fries.
Sophia S — Google review
Good experience for me. But I don't recommend for other people. The store is tiny space. A lot's of people waiting in lunch time. They have Branch store in market area.
Sangsu J — Google review
A yummy stop for Sasebo burgers and this little joint is at the corner of a small street, coming out to a main road. It's a small 14 seater plane, and everything is prepared freshly when ordered. A double patty is ¥1518, and if it is a set with fries and soft drink, that comes up to ¥2068.

Sasebo Station is a small but charming transportation hub that offers easy access to the city's attractions. Travelers can take a scenic JR train ride from Nagasaki Station, with the Sea Side Liner providing breathtaking coastal views along the way. Visitors praise the station for its helpful and patient English-friendly staff who can assist with travel arrangements. The area around the station boasts various shops, including gift shops and places to grab a meal, making it convenient for travelers to explore and enjoy local cuisine.
I was in Sasebo one time. It was in 1968. I was in the U.S.Navy. I will never forget it. It was one of the nicest cities I ever visited. The people were so very gracious! The food was great (Kobe Steaks) plus traditional Japanese food. I went to a public bath and had the greatest professional massage. Never experienced any thing like since!! I was so relaxed afterwards it was difficult to walk. I've always wanted to go back.

Encountering the Shinkansen station attendant, it seemed that he could only barely understand English. It took quite a while for him to grasp my meaning, and I even received a disdainful look from the attendant.

It is a medium size station with eateries and convenience stores. Good place to drop off to explore Sasebo. And they have kind staff who helps out too. Good.

we came on rainy day and the church was closed. too bad we can not ask permission to enter the church. it was located on a higher land so from infront we need to climbed several sets of steep stairs. from the outside it is a small beautiful church.

Visited during winter, 2020. The main entrance is located on top of a hill, which is accessible via a flight of stairs. Church was peaceful and queit, with a clean and solemn environment. You have to take off your shoes to visit the church as it has traditional japanese wooden flooring. Good place to visit in Sasebo.
Anthony C — Google review
Beautiful church up on the hill.
Frank S — Google review
The church is considerably near Sasebo Station, around 5-10 minutes of walking. You have to climb around 3 floors worth of stairs to reach the entrance. The inside is clean and neat, to be expected of any Japanese location. Nothing you can't see in any other Catholic church. The stained glass isn't that special. If you want to take a picture of the whole church, you have to cross the street on the other side. Quite interestingly, I think it kind of looks a bit similar to that castle which you can see on those children's movies ;) Anyway, maybe I'm quite unimpressed because I see all sorts of churches where I live from in Manila

Sasebo C & B Burgers Shimokyomachiten is a burger joint with a unique history influenced by its proximity to a U.S. naval base. The presence of the base has made Sasebo globally connected and culturally diverse, leading to the introduction of the iconic American hamburger to the local cuisine by an American GI after World War II. Despite being an unexpected specialty in Kyushu, Sasebo has a tradition of old-fashioned, handmade burgers made from local ingredients.
I couldn’t imagine how a burger could amaze me at such. The dough is fluffy, the beacon is crispy and thick, with tasty sauce.
Rinoa C — Google review
I found it very tasty. But new generation style. The shop is small and there are many students. Top class burgers in the world.

Very good Sasebo burger. Near the end of the Ginza you can dine in or take out. My first Sasebo burger and it was delicious! I had the number 2 which is the most popular one according to the menu. It did not disappoint it was very fresh and very tasty. I walked here so I did not see if they had parking nearby.

Burger could have been bigger - especially the beef patty. Essentially the size of a McDonald’s Big Mac patty at 2-3x the price. 4 stars for flavor and quality though. Great combination of ingredients.
Alan M — Google review
The patty was tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. The proper amount of sauce and toppings were used. The ingredients tasted fresh. Overall, the burger was delicious! The lemonade was absolutely amazing! I loved the pulp from actual lemons. It added some texture to the juice. Very different from what I'd get at home, in a great way! I'll never look at fast food burgers the same.👌🏾😋

Sasebo Port, located in Japan, has a rich history dating back to the establishment of the Sasebo Naval District Headquarters. The port boasts modern architectural monuments built by some of Japan's best technicians. In 2015, the International Terminal was completed, allowing large cruise ships to dock and making Sasebo more accessible to tourists. The port is also known for housing bases for the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The port isn't to talk about with the terminal there. They did have vendors selling their wares and an information counter. They didn't have greeters playing music or inside terminal free tea service, or free painted fans or banners with your name hand printed on it like two other terminals. We did buy a Kimono. So, it did end up being worthwhile. A free shuttle service was there to bring us to the covered street shopping mall.

Hirado Castle, located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a restored 18th-century hilltop castle offering panoramic views of the Hirado Strait. The castle was originally built in 1599 by Shigenobu Matsuura, a powerful feudal lord.
Only open from 8:30 am to 5 pm, my visit was short lived as I arrived 30 minutes prior. The grounds are vast and only little ground was covered, but from my experience it was a wondrous experience getting to see the beautiful architecture of the walls that barricade around the castle itself. There is a tour offered that provides a rich history background but is an optional offer through the main castle, which I was not able to see myself in this trip. So much was left unseen so another visit seems to be in order for a more riveting experience.
KG & — Google review
One of the better castles I've visited in Japan. The view is incredible and the grounds have a lot to offer before you even enter the castle. Once inside, there are lots of interactive games and historical presentations. Even though most of it was in Japanese, I learned a lot about the castle. Will definitely come back for another visit!
Kristen Y — Google review
Definitely a must see if you are in the area or within driving distance. This castle is small but very interactive and keeps you entertained. There are games and you can learn about the history as well. On the very top floor of the castle they offer a photograph service that is done via your phone through an app. That was a big plus. I would recommend parking in the shrine area as it is easier to access the castle and this way you can see the shrine as well which is pretty nice and a good size.

Beautiful, historic place to visit. We went on a Saturday and it was not very busy. Lots of walking to do around the area where the castle is located.
Cigi L — Google review
Authentic entrance... I thought it was abandoned when we started into the property grounds. Overgrown foliage and the sound of crickets or similar, I felt like I was in an old Indiana Jones movie. Once by the castle, the outside structure was a replica of the original, but the inside was completely modernized and more like a museum. The view from the top was awesome though. Not a fan of the many spiders, but the wildlife around was their territory!!
Ellie C — Google review
You can walk around the castle grounds and explore. There is no entrance fee except for the main tower where you can get a good location to view the vicinity. There are other viewing spots around the castle as well though. There’s also a shrine within the castle grounds. Nice to visit when in Hirado.
Bernadette G — Google review
I went out of my way to see Hirado Castle and don’t regret it! Entry was ¥520, and it’s worth it, for the fantastic tower view and small museum. Going up in the tower you’ll get a great view of the city of Hirado, Hirado Bridge, and the ocean. The castle complex is also really cool. There’s some replica buildings, a small gift shop, and right there in one small area. If you’re English speaking- be aware that nearly all of the museum is in Japanese. It’s a great museum though and is worth checking out if you’re willing to use GoogleLens. Lastly, bring cash. The gift shop only accepts cash payments and the ticket machine in the tower only accepts cash.

Saikaibashi Park, a sprawling 37-hectare park in Nagasaki Prefecture, is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms and picturesque coastal views. The park features a wooden playground where kids can play while adults relax on the grass and take in the breathtaking scenery. Visitors can also enjoy activities like sledding down a hill with rented toboggans.
We went on a rainy day and had a blast! Make sure to park on the 3rd entrance if you're coming from Sasebo. The first entrance is on the North side of the bridge on the right. The second entrance is on the left side after you cross the bridge. And the third entrance is around the corner. We didn't use the third entrance and it was a long hike out, uphill carrying both kids after we were done playing. we had to hike back to the second park entrance. This was right before the kids nap, so I recommend you plan your parking appropriately. The big green slide is 300 yen to use. I'm not sure if it's per use or unlimited use, but we paid 300 yen and used it four or five times each. this was the only thing I found that we needed to pay for. There a few snacks and vending machines around, but we did not use those for this trip. Took us about 35 minutes from Sasebo on the non-toll road. Tolls back are 260 yen at this time. Scenery is beautiful and we look forward to going back again to enjoy the park more.

Beautiful views. There are two bridges that can be seen from the pedestrian bridge. You can take many photos and admire the views. Looking around is interesting enough even if it would only last some minutes (or more depending on you). There’s a curfew for passing the bridge. There’s a shop and a ceremony hall on the way if you come from the Saikai products center side of the road. Didn’t have time to explore much other than the view of the bridges but there are many lookout points and the park seems bigger than upon initial seeing.

Nice quick walking path with three spots to view Sasebo from above. There also a path from the Yumihari Hotel to reach the park. Dogs must be kept on leash and there a water fountain as well as public bathrooms and vending machines. Few spots to sit around park. Plenty of parking , I went in August so I would suggest bringing mosquito spray if you plan on walking in the other areas beside observation deck.

We had a great time going from block to block checking out what is for sale. Lots of places to eat burgers, BigMan and some others. We found a wonderful Japanese restaurant to have a late lunch. It was good and priced right. With a draft beer, we were happy campers. 100 Yen stores were great. If we lived in Japan, I saw items that I would buy. There were many clothing stores. The mall stretched for many blocks. The wide sidewalk and covered, made our walk very pleasant indeed.

The road is winding and twisty on the way up but it's worth going there for the night view especially on a clear night. Be careful when you're climbing the stairs up to the observatory. You might need a small flashlight in order not to trip on something. Also be careful of the walls in the observatory because they're a little bit low and if you're tall you might slip and fall over if you're not careful. However putting all that aside you can really get a great view of the city at night and you can enjoy the stars and planets. Definitely a must see if you're in Sasebo for any length of time.

With clear signage and informative boards, finding this temple is relatively effortless, although the narrow roads require cautious driving. The vibrant hues of fiery red autumn leaves and golden ginkgo trees adorn the surroundings, creating a mesmerizing sight. At the heart of this sacred place lies the principal figure of Kannon Bodhisattva, accompanied by Nio statues in Okunoin.
Magical place.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Nestled along the stunning rias coast, UMIKIRARA is a modern aquarium that offers an engaging glimpse into the vibrant marine life of Kujuku Islands. This delightful destination features a massive main tank teeming with diverse sea creatures, including rare sea turtles and mesmerizing jellyfish in their symphony dome. Families will love the captivating dolphin shows and interactive exhibits designed to entertain kids while educating them about oceanic wonders.
Small aquarium, but definitely worth a visit if you have a kid. I've never seen a sea turtle so close! My son enjoyed it a bunch and he's 2. This was his first aquarium and it was memorable. Food is quite expensive around here. Bring your lunch if you can. We had ramen. It was not good, but the view was nice.
Duncan C — Google review
Beautiful, I saw the dolphin, sharks, sting rays, jelly fish and giant turtles etc. You need tickets to enter.
Adebisi K — Google review
The Aquarium may be small, but it packs a mighty punch. The highlight was the mesmerizing dolphin show, where the animals and their trainers displayed an incredible level of trust and cooperation, performing graceful, synchronized maneuvers that had the audience enthralled. Beyond the dolphin performance, the aquarium boasts an impressive collection of marine life, from vibrant coral reefs to different sea animals. The exhibits were thoughtfully designed, providing intimate glimpses into the underwater world. Despite its compact size, the Aquarium delivers an exceptional, enriching experience. Highly recommended for any traveler seeking an up-close encounter with the wonders of the sea.

I was extremely angry to see how the dolphins were kept in such a small enclosure ! They are such intelligent animals and should not be treated the way they are including the beautiful big turtles being kept inside a tiny tank ! I would not support this aquarium again 😡
Caitlin Z — Google review
the dolphin show is simple but its nice, the kids enjoy the water splash from dolphins jump...the sasebo burger near the aquarium is also a must👍😋

It’s rare to see sea turtles in a aquarium, but this place has a few. The sardine was amazing to see them up close, and dolphins too. There is also a 40 mins cruise to sail out and see the islands just next to the aquarium. Nice spot to visit and could spend a few hours (maybe 3 including the cruise).
Allen S — Google review
It's not the biggest aquarium, but I liked it a lot. It has a good variety of fish and I particularly enjoyed the dolphin show. I probably spent an hour or two there.
Rob H — Google review
I guess it’s not the newest aquarium but how is it’s possible to let animals live like that even in the 21th century? All animal rescue foundation should start petitions. The dolphin lives alone in a disaster of dirt and no nature. I am so shocked. Also the big turtle which just haeded in the corner of the tiny basin. Sure it’s a children exploring campus but for children education should be animal protection the first step. It is a nightmare for all animal lovers.

In addition, visitors will be amazed by the color-changing lights on the exterior of the tower at night.
An important landmark to be recognized from far away. We also could go to the to observe the panoramic view of Huis Ten Bosch. Besides that, the design of elevator was unique.

Adebisi K — Google review
I’ve lived here over 4 years and this is the first time I’ve actually visited for leisure. The first time I came I only went as far as the giraffes near the front for a volunteer event. This is a pretty decently sized zoo to visit especially with little ones. I love the way their penguin exhibit is set up and apparently there’s a sort of cafe or seating area that we missed. For 2 adults with a military discount it was literally around ¥1200! For an annual pass it’s ¥2100! For our son’s first visit to a zoo this was the perfect size and as soon as we were done he fell right asleep. Parking is free and just right across the street. There is a diaper changing room in the penguin exhibit building as well as a men’s and women’s restroom. The bathroom was very clean.

I’ve been visiting our neighborhood zoo since my daughter was six months old, and now that she’s two, she loves it even more! The zoo is within walking distance for us, making it a perfect place for frequent visits. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind, always enhancing our experience. We have an annual pass and this zoo is a fantastic spot to spend one to two hours with family, enjoying a diverse range of animals. The garden is a delightful bonus, with beautiful seasonal flowers and plants that add to the charm of the place. We always leave with smiles and look forward to our next visit!

Happy to have a place to take our child to learn about animals. They try really hard here to provide a good experience. Like most things in japan the property is quite dated. Lots of bathrooms available. For the price it is a great way to spend an hour. Purely on the condition of the property, it's 3 stars.

This was a nice zoo, very quiet. It was the middle of the week so it was pretty empty. It was clean overall, but some areas were a tad run down. We went on a hot day, so many of the flowers outside were not present.
Melissa L — Google review
Enclosures are way to small and depressing and I really hope they expand for them they need so much more space to run around and fly around happily, its cheap to get in and do feeding but we went and most things were closed, we didn’t even do the whole park for the fact it was getting to upsetting to see the small enclosures they’re kept in. They need a lot more greenery and trees etc to run around with and play with/on. Like the monkeys only having a tiny thing to climb on, they also need more shade for them over some of the enclosures etc. The place was dead when we went, extremely hot and muggy, the gardens and grass and everything was pretty dead, just a very dull sad and depressing zoo. I really don’t recommend coming here at all.
Van B — Google review
We used to live in Sasebo 5 yrs ago and had never been to this zoo until the other day. It’s super cute, but as it was soooo hot out, we didn’t see many animals. My kids and I still made the most of it. If you’re in Sasebo, check it out. It doesn’t receive the same attention as Biopark, but it is amazing and close to Kujukushima aquarium.

There are two ships available, the Pearl Queen and the Pirate Boat Mirai. The first ship's design is what I can call standard/classic, while the pirate one is colorful and has personality. I planned to ride the pirate boat, but as I arrived I discovered that the two ships alternate, meaning the Pearl Queen travels every 10am, 11am, so on, and the Pirate Boat at 9:30am, 10:30am, and so on. We had to go back to the station early so we had to ride the Pearl Queen. Nonetheless, we got to see a glimpse of the Pirate boat twice, first going to and second going back. It's still far away, but better than nothing. The ride lasts for 50 minutes. It's sunny at the top and the wind blows nicely. There's also a viewing deck below the top floor, not much wind but no direct sunlight. There are quite a number of interesting rock and island formations. My favorite is the rock formation that looks like a dog. You can see this halfway through the return trip. You can catch a picture together with this considerably close, but you have to be prepared and act fast.

Moreover, Mukyudo was dug voluntarily by the school, not under orders from the government or the military. No tools such as dynamite were used, and it was all carved by hand. It gives a sense of the harshness of the time, and I felt that it was a relic that conveyed a strong will to not let the precious lives and education of children be cut short by war. It was apparently dug by junior high school students under the guidance of teachers. Tuff is said to be easy to process, so I wonder what the students of that time were thinking as they wielded pickaxes and hoes... Ingenuity was seen everywhere, taking into consideration drainage and the disposal of water that had fallen down the walls. It pains me to think of the young students who must have unquestioningly accepted the many glorious reports of war success and worked enthusiastically. During an air raid, about 600 students were temporarily evacuated, but they suffered from oxygen deprivation and so a farm tool, a wind fan (winnower), was used to blow air in from the entrance. *Unlike rock-carved Buddhas, the tuff carvings made me feel a sense of emptiness when I saw the traces of chisels and pickaxes. (Translated by Google) A Catholic church in Kuroshima, Sasebo City. This is a representative church in the village of Kuroshima, which is a component part of the World Heritage Site of Hidden Christians in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Regions. When the Hirado Domain, which ruled Kuroshima during the Edo period when Christianity was banned, closed the ranches on the island and recruited settlers to cultivate the fields, the hidden Christians of the Omura Domain all migrated to Kuroshima. At that time, many hidden Christians migrated to remote islands to escape oppression as much as possible. As they secretly continued their faith for generations as parishioners of shrines and temples, at the end of the Edo period, believers were discovered at Oura Cathedral, and two months later, islanders from Kuroshima began to come forward one after another to confess that they were believers. When Christianity was lifted in the Meiji period, about 600 islanders were baptized, and even today about 80% of the islanders are Catholics. My main destination on this Kyushu trip was Kuroshima. Kuroshima Cathedral was founded by Father Marman, who was appointed to Kuroshima during the Meiji Period. The Romanesque style church made of bricks is beautiful from the outside. The bricks were originally fired on the island, but later, large quantities of bricks were brought in from outside the island and transported by hand to the planned construction site by the islanders. I rented an electric bicycle, but even so, the climb from the port to the church was so steep that my legs were exhausted. I can imagine the hardships of the people who transported the bricks at the time, but at the same time, I think they must have been so happy to be able to practice their faith so freely that they went to such lengths. The interior is also wonderful, with the sanctuary covered in Arita ware tiles, and the wood grain of the ceiling is not natural but hand-carved to make it look as luxurious as possible. The rose stained glass is particularly famous. It is also depicted on Kuroshima souvenirs. The sight of the stained glass colors reflected in the sunshine inside the church was very fantastic. Even now, the island's believers hold masses and funerals in this cathedral, so please be careful not to cause any trouble to the locals. Kuroshima Cathedral has been depicted in many movies, manga, anime, and more. Last year, it appeared in the anime movie "Kimi no Iro" directed by Yamada Naoko. The interior of the school chapel where the main character Totsuko often prayed was modeled after the cathedral, and it also features impressive stained glass. Many fans make pilgrimages to the holy sites of the work, and this time I was one of them. At the Welcome House on Kuroshima, in addition to Kuroshima Shrine and Kozenji Temple, you can also get pre-written goshuin stamps from Kuroshima Cathedral. There are also seasonal goshuin stamps. You might wonder if it's okay to have goshuin stamps at a church, but Godalmighty is the answer (lol). Kuroshima also sells original goshuin stamp books, so if you're a fan of goshuin stamps, please come to Kuroshima.

It was my first time on Kuroshima, I was at the mercy of quite a steep slope (lol) By renting an electric bicycle, Even though it's supposed to be electric, it's just as tiring as pedaling up a hill on a regular bicycle. It was only downhill near the cathedral, but it was always uphill. It's a steep slope whether you go clockwise or counterclockwise, Instead of going around the cathedral first, I think there will be more downhills if you take the route starting from the temple. (Well, the slope up to the temple is just as ridiculous.) If you have your own bike or bike, it might be a good idea to bring it with you. There are also rental scooters with seats attached to them (as electric bikes). According to the person who rented it, it doesn't climb hills (sweat). There were some people riding buggies, You might be able to rent it somewhere if you look for it, but I couldn't find it through the Kuroshima introduction. Photography is prohibited inside the cathedral, so I wasn't able to take any pictures. Things like crushing riverbeds and putting them in small bottles, There were free souvenirs inside, including a rainbow-colored cell phone strap. I donated 100 yen and took it home. Inside, you can go all the way to the back, which is rare. For the first time, I went near the altar of a church. The stained glass was also beautiful. I wanted to take a photo! ! I thought it was used on a daily basis, There were scriptures, prayer beads, etc. stored in the table area of the seat. I got the impression that the church was cherished by the residents. It has the atmosphere of a living church that is part of everyday life, not just for tourism. If you want to feel such an atmosphere, please visit. The design of the ancient shrine at Kameyama Hachimangu Shrine is remarkable, exuding a sense of reverence that brings tranquility to those who visit. The serene ambiance is enhanced by the presence of doves or hato, which warmly welcome visitors. Situated in a stunning location, the shrine becomes even more serene with the blooming cherry blossoms surrounding it, creating an ideal setting for contemplation and introspection.

As a child, I would visit with family and friends during festival season, feeding the pigeons in the grounds and enjoying the food stalls. I still vividly remember the lively and warm atmosphere of those days. Revisiting it again as an adult, I felt a sense of nostalgia and a rush of memories. 🥺 The grounds are well-maintained, and the place remains as peaceful and calming as ever. 😌 While this shrine exudes a long history, it also exudes a warmth and kindness that is close to the local people. It's a place that I'll definitely want to stop by whenever I visit home. It's like a spiritual home.

All exhibits are free, and the precious Hirado ware is carefully introduced, which is wonderful. I think it's a valuable spot where you can casually appreciate rare works. The museum has a spacious exhibition space, and there are detailed explanations for each piece. It's easy to understand even if you don't have any knowledge. The delicate patterns of the Hirado ware in particular were worth seeing, and were so beautiful that I wanted to take pictures of them. It's easy to access, and the environment is well-equipped with parking, benches, and parking for the disabled, so I think even elderly people and those with small children can visit with peace of mind. Maybe it's because there's no charge and they don't mind, but it's still disappointing. The exhibits are divided into two sections: one featuring vessels from the Edo period, and one featuring modern Mikawachi ware potteries displayed by each pottery manufacturer. In particular, the modern pieces don't feature transfers, and each pottery manufacturer displays intricate hand-painted and intricately crafted vessels. If you're going to a pottery market, it might be a good idea to look up the characteristics of the pottery manufacturer you're interested in beforehand and then head to the pottery you want to visit. Maybe because it was a weekday afternoon, I had the large parking lot all to myself. (Translated by Google) The Mikawachi Pottery Museum is located near Mikawachi Station on the JR Sasebo Line. I'd always seen it when I went shopping in the Sasebo area, and it had always piqued my interest, so I finally decided to take a look. The interior of the building is divided into two sections: the right side, housing masterpieces from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, and the left side, housing the Traditional Industry Hall, showcasing representative works from current potteries. I started my tour with the museum. The history of Mikawachi ware is explained as follows: "It's a pottery style that emerged in the Mikawachi region of the former Hirado domain in the late 16th century. It began with Karatsu pottery, then was influenced by Arita. Meanwhile, Nakano ware, said to have been founded by Korean potters brought over during the Korean War, moved to Mikawachi, and by the 18th century, the delicate and elegant white porcelain with blue and white porcelain was perfected." I was shown the works from each period in order, but I was surprised to find that those guys weren't featured. Among the works lined up from oldest to newest, the Karako characters, the representative characters of Mikawachi ware (I know that's a bit rude to say, but I think they play an iconic role in representing Mikawachi ware), rarely appeared. After being shown works from the Showa era, the Karako characters finally made an appearance in the "Blue and White Water Jar with Five Karako Design (Late Edo Period)," which was on display before we moved to the Traditional Industry Hall next door. (There was no indication that photography was prohibited, but as this is a work of art, I refrain from showing it here.) Most art museums rotate their exhibits regularly, but on the day I visited, this was the only piece featuring a Karako character in the museum. At restaurants that specialize in Japanese cuisine and set meals, tea is often served in a Karako teacup. I thought of Karako as an icon that immediately identified Mikawachi ware, so I was surprised to learn that they weren't a representative design of Mikawachi ware historically. This was reflected again when I was later shown the Traditional Industry Hall, where works by current potters were lined up. At the entrance to the Traditional Industry Hall, a large plate was on display. It was produced with the cooperation of the Nagasaki Prefectural Ceramics Technology Center to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the opening of Mikawachi ware kilns. The plate was densely and densely covered with a pattern of Chinese dwarf eaves. From afar, it seemed like a geometric or arabesque pattern, but upon closer inspection, it was fascinating to watch each of the Chinese dwarf eaves moving about. We were shown works by current potters in turn. There was a wide variety of potters, from those specializing in traditional designs to those working on modern tableware and elaborate crafts. Among them, one potter exhibited a work that reconstructed Chinese dwarf eaves with a modern design, and this piece, which successfully incorporated tradition, caught my eye. For me, the image of Mikawachi ware was firmly established as being synonymous with Chinese dwarf eaves, but after visiting the art museum and the Traditional Industry Hall, I was reminded of the depth of Mikawachi ware.

These are known as Gyoki's "One Cutter, Three Spirits," and one of them, the "Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva," was enshrined in this cave. This marked the beginning of Fukuishi Kannon, and the inner hall where the principal image is enshrined is called Gyoki Rock. Around the Enryaku and Daido periods (around 805 AD), Kobo Daishi (Kukai) came to Japan to relive the traces of Gyoki's pilgrimage. He built Seigan-ji Temple next to the main hall to help people, and enshrined 500 arhats in the cave behind Mt. Fukuishi. Since then, it has been counted as one of the Seven Kannon of Kyushu, and has been revered as a sacred place of worship for many people, leaving behind various Buddhist sites. During the time of the former Hirado domain, it was designated one of the Eight Views of Hirado, and after it became a naval port for the Imperial Japanese Navy, it was listed as one of Sasebo's most famous places, leaving behind many historical traces. The 46,000 Days Festival, held every year from August 8th to 10th, has long been the most popular summer festival in the area. It is popular with worshippers who believe that if you visit during this period, one day's visit will bring you the same blessings as visiting for 46,000 days.

The Uragashira Repatriation Memorial Museum is a historical institution situated on a small hill, showcasing the history of Hariojima Uragashira Port. This port played a vital role in accepting individuals who had relocated from various places after World War II. The museum offers an insight into that era through the display of artifacts, documents, and photographs from that time period.
Such an amazing piece of history that we rarely see. It gave really good insight to what happened to the Japanese soldiers returning to Japan after WWII. I will be visiting again. They had a good amount of parking and very friendly staff.

(Translated by Google) It is one of the various repatriation sites that existed after the Pacific War. The in-house video shows you what procedures to follow to enter Japan. There were also exhibits about demobilization ships and document procedures. In old videos, you see very skinny veterans, but this video shows a muscular soldier (?). I guess the food situation differed depending on where you were posted. It seems that it was also difficult for the women to be repatriated. There is a lot of information that is painful to know. I guess this is what it's like to participate in a war and lose a war...it's painful. This facility is about 50 years old. If possible, maybe it would be a good idea to renew the exhibit with more detailed explanations? ...I think so. If you are interested in this, you might also want to visit the ``Manchurian Peace Memorial Museum'' in Nagano Prefecture and the ``Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum'' in Fukui Prefecture.

Shimanose Park in Sasebo is a bustling square that hosts various events, including farmers' markets and a captivating winter light show. It serves as the perfect venue to immerse oneself in Japanese culture or procure fresh produce from the weekly markets. (Translated by Google) You'll be driving quite far into the area, so you might be a little worried that you're on the wrong road, but just keep going. There is a bridge for one vehicle along the way. It was possible to pass by a regular car, but larger cars need to be careful. There is a parking lot in the back that can park 5 or 6 cars. It took about 15 minutes to walk to the waterfall. It's quite a climb, so you'll be out of breath. The waterfall is very nice. There are no fences, so you can get quite close to it, but your feet can be slippery, so be careful. A large amount of spray will fly. I am bathed in negative ions. The return trip is downhill, so you can get off quickly. (Translated by Google) The closest parking lot is across a bridge that is so narrow that you wonder if it's okay to drive through here (about 5-6 spaces). This bridge is fine for light vehicles, but Alphard class vehicles will not be forced to pass, and there is sufficient parking space in front of the bridge or on the downhill side of the bridge, so it would be better to go there. You'll have to walk a bit, but it's better than rubbing it. You will be forced to choose between 250m and 210m to cross the red kamaboko-shaped bridge and reach Senryugataki. I was worried about this 40m difference, but the short distance was a climb with some rocky terrain that made the footing difficult. Recommended for people who are energetic and can enjoy it. The longer path is made up of well-paved, shallow steps and is ideal for people with babies or those with weak legs. It seems like they are merging in the middle, so both of them end up having a bit of a difficult footing. You can get close to the basin of the waterfall, but if you are afraid of the final descent, just looking at it from above may be enough. It's a beautiful place with greenery and moss. Let's go home after bathing in negative ions at this famous waterfall with a drop of over 20 meters (as the sign says)! The toilets are located in the plaza in front of the stairs.

(Translated by Google) Visited on May 15, 2023. Although it is located deep in the mountains where not many people come, there was a steady flow of people, one group coming and one group leaving. From the parking lot, walk a little. I didn't remember it, but there is a temple (?) as well as a waterfall. The garden seemed to be well-maintained, and even during the season when grass tends to overgrow, the garden was carefully cleaned of weeds and fallen leaves, making it very beautiful. Vacuum cleaners were left visible inside the temple, buckets and gloves were hung to dry next to the path. It has a very rural, folk-like atmosphere, but I thought it had a nice flavor to it. Even though it's in a lonely place, it's a place that is loved by people. Also, unusually, there was a dog kept next to the shrine grounds. It's so quiet that you wouldn't notice it if it wasn't written down. Even if you look into it, you can almost enter the hut. However, the animal smell was a little strong here. It was a very quiet place. This year was so hot that there weren't many mosquitoes, but I thought it would be a good idea to use insect repellent in the summer. It's a waterfall and it's humid, so there's a lot of moss. It can be slippery, so be careful near the waterfall. Nimitz Park is a vast outdoor sports venue that is currently developing a versatile field suitable for both European and American football. The park also offers amenities such as beach volleyball courts, baseball fields, and a dedicated area for children to play. When visiting the park, it is recommended to check in with the USO, an organization that provides extensive support to military personnel and their families. It's important to show your support for them as they always demonstrate unwavering assistance.
Huge park for most outdoor sporting events. They are still working on a big field that looks to multi use field for European football (soccer) or American football. It's easy to find on foot from Sempukuji Station on the Matsuura Railway, as it's just down an alley at the end of the street. By car, there's a large sign near Sasebo Technical High School, and a guide board at the end of the hill, so there's no need to worry about getting lost. However, there's no parking lot, so I parked at a coin laundry about 30 meters away. As you walk along the brick road, you'll come across a small historic park on the left with an information board. I think the atmosphere would be enhanced if they exhibited a miniature replica of the bean-shaped pottery, like the one at Shikanoshima Kin'in Park. In the mid-17th century, Imari ware, brought over by the Dutch East India Company, became highly popular in Europe and was highly valued as furnishings. Along with tracing this connection to East-West exchange, the museum also displays numerous works of art. The highlight is a room recreating the "Porcelain Room" found in a German palace, where approximately 3,000 pieces of porcelain are displayed in one place. Leaving the museum, there is a souvenir shop specializing in ceramics. With a selection of works by various companies and artists, it's recommended for both practical use and visual enjoyment. The Fukui Cave Museum is a compact and fascinating museum that offers free admission and provides brochures for English-speaking visitors. Although the staff member at the front desk had limited English proficiency, they were friendly and relied on Google Translate to communicate. Most displays in the museum are accompanied by English translations, and even those without them can be easily understood with the help of Google Lens translation.
Neat little museum! There’s no entrance fee and they have pamphlets for English speakers. The staff member at the desk didn’t speak much English, but was very nice and we just talked through Google Translate. Most of the displays have English translations on them too, but even the ones that didn’t weren’t hard to understand. I just used Google Lens to translate. The history of the area was really cool to learn about and is presented in a way that makes it easy to understand. I saw online that today Fukui cave is really small, but the museum explains how that wasn’t always the case and the history of human occupation in this area of Japan.

I can't understand anyone that would give this less than five stars. They have incredibly old artifacts, great displays with decent English translations, and really fun activities such as fire making, learning how to weave, actually holding 18,000 year old arrow heads, etc. This is a small museum that won't take much time, but punches well above it's weight. (Translated by Google) This is a museum about the Fukui Cave, a special historic site. Admission was free. Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, has the most cave ruins in Japan. I didn't go to see Fukui Cave because it's now mostly filled with soil, but the exhibits here were fascinating. The ruins' 5.5m-deep layers of rock date from the Paleolithic to the Jomon period, and the excavated items give us a glimpse into the lives of people throughout each era. It seems that there were times when the cave became uninhabitable due to falling rocks and landslides, but traces of life can be found in shallower layers after that, so this area must have been a very livable environment throughout all eras. What surprised me was how slender the Jomon people were. I knew they were about 10cm shorter than modern people, but I had an image of them being big-boned and muscular, so this impression changed a bit. Perhaps the environment was so rich that they didn't have to use their bodies too much. I think so (Original)

(Translated by Google) I was able to enjoy fishing in a scenic spot. However, the road leading up to this point is narrow, so if you have a large car, it might be difficult for people who are worried about driving when there is oncoming traffic. It didn't seem like there would be that many oncoming cars (lol) (Original)

Embark on a private Kujukushima sightseeing cruise, perfect for families during the pandemic. Experience the serene sea, gentle breeze, and picturesque rock formations adorned with elegant pines. Discover small islands with secluded sandy beaches. Choose from two boats - a standard cruise or a pirate-themed one departing every 30 minutes. The lower deck offers enclosed seating while the upper decks provide open observation spaces for unobstructed views and fresh air.
One of the highlights of my trip to Japan

It is an disguised ancient vessel with a lovely appearance which makes both the young and old happy. The cruise was very smooth with no rocking movements detected. The fun part was at the open air deck where you can feel the fresh sea air. The ship passed through many small but scenic islands. Don't forget to put on the captain's uniform for a photo shoot.

Great experience for all ages. The lower deck has comfortable seating and enclosed space so you don't have to worry about cold or wind. The upper decks have fun observation spaces if you want to feel the wind and have unobstructed views. The scenery is beautiful and there is narration provided in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. The ride is under an hour, which I felt like was the perfect length. Fun, clean, comfortable. It could be romantic for couples, adventurous solo, and memory making for families with children. Highly recommend.

(Translated by Google) Pearl Queen Sightseeing Boat Capacity: 280 people (118 seats) The cruise takes about 50 minutes to tour the narrow straits and coves of the Kujukushima Islands. The fare is 2,200 yen for high school students and above, 2,000 yen for those 70 years and older, 1,100 yen for those aged 4 to junior high school students, and free for children under 3. The price has risen due to rising prices, so opinions on the cost-effectiveness may vary. ] You can see the view outside from the seats on the boat, but unless the weather conditions are bad, I think it's better to go outside and enjoy the cruise while feeling the breeze. It's especially fun to feel the movement and tilt of the boat outside when making a U-turn in the bay of Matsuura Island, the midpoint. There is also a story that Matsuura Island was where the Matsuura clan's warriors who lost the war hid. When you go there by boat, you will certainly find many places that look like places to hide.

(Translated by Google) The Pearl cruise ship is elegant, and the voyage takes 50 minutes. It's not crowded, making for a comfortable experience. Driving is more convenient if you want to visit the nearby observation deck.
