Karatsu Castle, a stunning historical landmark originally completed in 1607, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the rich heritage of Karatsu City. This magnificent structure was built using materials from the nearby Nagoya Castle and stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful bay and open sea. Often referred to as Maizuru Castle, which translates to 'the castle of the dancing crane,' it gets its name from the nearby beach that resembles a crane with outstretched wings.
It's majestic! There are two ways to access the mountain top, elevator and stairs! The elevator costs 100 yen per adult! Stairs up to the top are more charming, and offer visitors a great view of the Karatsu bay! The gardens on different slabs of the mountain have plenty of spaces where children and youths can have rampaging! The basement on the mountain top is extremely beautiful! It costs 500 yen per adult to visit the castle! The top floor which was originally used as a watch post will certainly give the visitors a thrilling swing of wind! Watch your steps while on the top! It slightly slides downwards! Be extra careful while capturing pictures because a simple indifference may cause your precious phone or camera to go down! The parking space before the castle is not so expensive! Enjoy!!

Small castle on top of a hill. There is an elevator to get to the castle ground (¥100/one way) but only stairs inside the castle. Interesting artefacts on display. Great view of Karatsu Bay and town from the top of the castle.
Angelo ( — Google review
Beautiful small castle. The elevator (200y pp) allows wheelchair access to castle's grounds but not indoors. The staff were super friendly and kind. The view to the ocean was picturesque. Cute cats are always a plus. 🐈 ♡
Hwon — Google review
Nicely renovated castle with an incredible view over Karatsu and the open sea from the top floor! Well worth the climb noting there is also an elevator. I sometime wonder why some Kyushu historical jewels are so much underrated by some famous green guides… Not only Kyushu offers a lot but people are so friendly and food simply too good 👍 Fresh , local and people are proud of their products.
Claude L — Google review
Probably one of the coolest castles I have visited while circumnavigating japan, high on a hill surrounded by water, overlooking the beaches and the city. Soo cool
Only I — Google review
Must go place, very informative in the museum, nice scene on top floor (5th floor), but beware its windy when staying outdoor.
Raymond L — Google review
Beautiful grounds around the castle where you can have a leisurely walk and view the city. For an unrestricted 360-degree view of Karatsu, pay the entrance fee to access the observation deck. Note you can't use the new 500 yen coin, but staff are friendly and helped us to change to an older coin to pay the ticket from the machine.
A L — Google review
Pro: it's a beautiful castle that dominates the local landscape. It has amazing views. The 2 hr bus from Fukuoka was worth it just to see the view from the top deck of the castle. There's an incredible view of the sea and nearby islands on one side, and rivers and mountains on the other. The castle is beautiful from the outside, and the entrance was relatively cheap at ¥500. Also, the place is climate controlled. The exhibits have a decent range of pottery, swords, armour, and graphics depicting the region's history. Con: this is a rebuilt castle with a bad interior design, with the tiling looking like it's from a bathroom from the 1990s. There aren't many views until you get to the top deck , because they've remodelled the interior to be more of a museum. For the museum: There is almost no english, and the QR code you scan to read more about the castle asks you to download an app that currently isn't working ( at least on my phone which is a Google Pixel 8). They should just make the place bilingual with Japanese and English so it is easier for the majority of foreign tourists. If you don't care about history, this point won't bother you too much.

Flea & Street Markets
Nestled by the picturesque fishing port of Yobuko, the Yobuko Morning Market is a vibrant hub that showcases the region's rich marine bounty and agricultural delights. Spanning a lively 200-meter stretch, this bustling market operates daily from 7 am to noon and is celebrated as one of Japan's top three morning markets alongside Takayama and Wajima.
We got lucky since a lot of small shops were open and we could try very tasty skewers with tako and otate. Easy 30’ bus ride from Karatsu bus terminal using Showa line.
Claude L — Google review
We visited on a Thursday around 10 am. It was drizzling on and off. The parking lot was more than half empty. There weren't too many shops serving hot food, but what we tried was delicious. The grilled scallops and abalone (topped with uni) were my favourites. Other seafood we tried were squid, octopus, and turban snails (sazae). While waiting for the grilled seafood, the shop owner gave us samples of their other goods - the dried sardines had a good chew and were not too sweet. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and not having to wade through a crowd, unlike fish markets in the big cities.
Tracy H — Google review
Yobuko Morning Market We visited here in the late morning. Many stores not opened or it already closed due to the time. Recommend menus are fried squid and grilled abalones. In the market has cafe and craft beer as well. The atmosphere the day we visited was nice and not too hot, so we enjoy the street food very much.
Panisara — Google review
Arrived just 15 minutes before closing, so the visit was a bit rushed. Still managed to sample a variety of seafood: bbq oysters, turban snails, hotate, cold marinated squid, and dried squid. So much squid—I love it! Prices were slightly higher than expected but still reasonable.
Edwin — Google review
Squid mecca of Kyushu! My husband lurrrrrves squid to the max, so we went at 730AM only to find out that the restaurant he wanted to eat at opened at 1045. We tried to enjoy what we could while there. The highlight was probably the squid helicopter at one of the entrances close to the car park. Non-food merchandise from Karatsu were also being sold at the market. I loved the ceramics the most. If you are into them as well, I would suggest buying the hamaguri-shaped bowl. It is traditional Karatsu kitchenware. We fortunately found a restaurant that had similar service features to what he wanted to dine at- 透明 (clear) squid sashimi, tentacles were cut off and turned into crisp tempura and also grilled. The amounts surprisingly increased when we got them back. Add this to your lists if you enjoy invertebrate breakfasts.
Krantzl K — Google review
Morning market visited on weekday. Probably not as busy as it would be on weekend and not all vendors were there. The shops opened offered some of the freshest grilled seafood. Must go and experience. Small shop operate by husband and wife team offering grilled squid, octopus, scallops, abalone and other dried seafood snacks should be requisite spot to go upon visit.
Rick L — Google review
A morning market held almost every day. Famous for squid. You may see a squid fishing boat with lots of lamps to attract squid This was once a harbor for hunting whales.

Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove is a vast forest of Japanese black pine trees, spanning approximately 4 kilometers in length and 500 meters in width. Originally planted by the first Karatsu feudal lord, the trees form an arc along the sandy beach and blue sea, bending under the influence of cool sea breezes. The area provides a serene ambiance with thousands of pine trees scattered throughout, releasing a gentle aroma as you walk on fallen leaves.
Drove up. Relaxing and windy. Great views of the city. Definitely recommended. Plus even the parking is free too.
Charles T — Google review
I've ridden (bicycle and motorcycle), driven and walked through here and it's always nice. The road is narrow. If you're on a bicycle it can be a bit sketchy, lots of traffic, trucks and buses, but you can push on the sandy trail on the beach side of the road if it gets too hairy. 2023
Brent B — Google review
Really cool place to take a walk. The trees are all slanted and it is amazing how they are all standing. The area is very large and you will multiple areas to park a car to enjoy this amazing pine grove. Plus, it is right next to the a very nice beach that is also worth a visit.

Beautiful, cool (temperature) and serene. Was a very memorable walk. There are also children's play areas scattered along the path, so great for kids to play and parents to relax. Due to the ground being covered by pine needles a lot of noise is absorbed. The road is less than 100m away from the path but the sound of cars driving by is very faint. If you're in the area, consider giving Karatsu Burger Matsubara Honten a try
Vernard Q — Google review
Lovely, quiet, beautiful place. Thousands of pine trees are all over the place. Not too many people and the area is huge. You are steping on fallen pine leaves, it is soft and it release a faint of pine fragrance. It is a very nice place for a short walk. I walked 3km from Karatsu Castle to Niji no Matsubara, then another 2km to JR

Nanatsugama is a captivating natural attraction in Saga, featuring a group of seven sea caves formed by the relentless wave erosion of black basalt cliffs. While its name suggests seven caves, there are actually more to explore. Visitors can take a boat ride to witness the mysterious beauty up close, admiring the striking contrast between the clear green sea and the rugged rocky ceilings within the caves.
I was searching for places of interest in Saga and Nanatsugama came up, so I was intrigued and decided to drop by on my way to Karatsu. We regretted it as soon as we arrived. It was a long walk from the parking lot to the site, and although the view was nice, it was physically demanding. When we got to the quay, we were glad we came. I took a lot of pictures to commemorate the visit. If I ever go again, I would like to take a sightseeing boat.
Google review
Visited Nanatsugama in Karatsu and had a really enjoyable time. The views of the sea were absolutely stunning, with dramatic cliffs and endless ocean making it a peaceful spot to explore. I didn’t take the boat ride into the sea caves, but I spotted one from the trail, which was already impressive enough. There’s also a bit of light hiking involved, which adds to the experience if you enjoy nature. What made the visit even more memorable was discovering the 乙姫大明神 (Otohime Daimyōjin) statue nearby. It added a nice touch of folklore and culture to the natural beauty of the area. Overall, it’s a great place for a scenic stroll, a bit of coastal breeze, and a dose of Japanese mythology—all in one visit.
Edwin — Google review
Nice hike. Great for dates. Was quiet and secluded with lots of great views and hiking trail.
Rick L — Google review
The view is even more beautiful than in the photos. The park is spacious, so you can enjoy walking around and easily spend an hour there.
T K — Google review
Absolutely amazing little hike along the water. The trails are easily to follow and leads to beautiful views of multiple caves. Their are plenty of picnic tables, so be prepared to pack lunch. Plus, there is a very large and free parking lot.
Kristin P — Google review
Absolutely amazing natural beauty in saga. A must see if you are in the area, even if you are in Fukuoka it's worth the trip. If you want to see the park on top of the rocks you need to go by car (I rented a taxi for a few hours). Theres a lot to explore at that park and you can get pretty close to the caves but to see them best it's worth going on one of the tour boats. Really breath taking, Ive seen many natural wonders but this was one of the more impressive!
David N — Google review
From parking lot, there're 2 ways to get through a scenic spot. If Toilet in the middle, left side is easier way as concrete street which right side is stairs with forest and meadow view. There're a few entrances to view points both Nanatsugama and Motose.
Supak R — Google review
This is a great stop for anyone interested in seeing Saga’s natural beauty. Those who enjoy fishing can do so as well. Public transportation to this location leaves much to be desired as the bus takes one quite far from the caves, but the walk is worth it. For those driving here the roads can be a little narrow and poorly marked, so drive carefully. This is a good place for an outdoor lunch as well.

The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall in Karatsu showcases an impressive collection of enormous 19th-century floats featuring fish and dragons, which are used during the annual Kunchi festival. Located just a brief walk away from JR Karatsu Station beside the Karatsu Shrine, visitors can enjoy admiring the incredible design, colors and history of these magnificent floats. The admission fee is a reasonable 310 yen and includes viewing of a short documentary on the festival.
Interesting exhibit and information provided. There are 13 of the 14 "Hikiyama" , 3-wheel carts still existing from the 600 A.D period, one of which is on display at the Exhibition Hall, with a mechanical doll of the peach, "momo-taro" boy. Festival is on Sunday after the first Monday of October.
Julie H — Google review
I was very disappointed that we couldn't get closer. They were hard to see from far away. Also they were behind glass, so taking pictures was also hard. Costs 310¥ to get in.
Beatrice T — Google review
I think it's neat and the admission fee isn't too high but why is it behind glass at a distance? Is it too hard to place stanchions? I've seen national treasures on display with less protection. Hopefully they can complete the maintenance of the main venue soon.
Beatle M — Google review
The floats were beautiful, and for those who'd like to learn more there are detailed descriptions on the upper floor, as well as a video showing the annual festival. Well worth the entey fare.

Karatsu Shrine, a Shinto shrine founded in 755 AD, is famous for its annual Karatsu Kunchi festival and a large white torii gate. The festival, held from November 2nd to 4th each year, originated around 190 years ago as an agricultural celebration to thank the god of the shrine for bountiful harvests. The festival features unique floats shaped like sea bream and samurai helmets drawn through the streets.
The Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are two exceptional cultural destinations in Japan that present an enthralling fusion of customs, history, and festivities. The Karatsu Shrine is a breathtaking location with deep spiritual meaning. The temple is located in the center of Karatsu City, but its calm surroundings and architectural design offer a peaceful respite from the busyness of everyday life. A beautiful entry is provided by the torii, or shrine gate, and the lovely path that leads up to it. The main hall has a reverent aura due to its elaborate woodwork and distinctive design. An unforgettable show takes place every year in early November during the Karatsu Kunchi Festival. It's a bright and colorful celebration of the rich cultural legacy of Karatsu. The festival's centerpiece is the parade of enormous, elaborate floats known as "hikiyama." These floats have been painstakingly made and beautifully ornamented. The visual spectacle of watching these floats being pulled through the city streets is enhanced by the celebratory atmosphere created by the music and rhythmic chants. The event also showcases the skills of the local community with a range of traditional performances, like as taiko drumming and lion dances. In the vibrant food stands and marketplaces that spring up throughout the festival, guests can indulge in a vast variety of regional specialties and handicrafts. The friendly welcome of the villagers is what really makes the Karatsu Kunchi Festival unique. They take great delight in introducing guests to their culture, which adds to the unforgettable experience. It's the ideal chance to become fully immersed in Japanese customs and experience the pride and unity that this event represents. In summary, the Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are a fascinating fusion of culture and faith. While the festival presents an exciting and colorful display of Japanese culture, the shrine offers a tranquil haven. Without a doubt, visiting these two attractions will deepen your awareness of Japan's rich history.

Beautiful quiet shrine. I recommend to stop by if you're in the area!
Sophie K — Google review
I only saw the outer area as I was passing on to the castle. I washed my hands in the basin near the entrance which was nice. Given that it was a holiday and a festival day, the area was really busy. Also, there was a man shouting over a loudspeaker nearby to bring attention to his haunted house set up near the shrine entrance. Seemed inappropriate, really. On a quieter day, I'd like to check it out and give it more time.

Nagoya Castle Ruins, located on a hilltop, are the remains of a 16th-century fortress with a small history museum and beautiful cherry blossoms in spring. The site holds historical significance as it was built by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi for the Bunroku-Keicho War and served as a military camp. The area also played a role in Japan's exchange with the Korean Peninsula.
Historical place but unfortunately the museum was closed today.

For a small fee, one can enter the former grounds of Nagoya castles. Not much remains from the castle, but the views and nature makes for a pleasant walk and it’s worth it if already visiting the museum. I went in the dead of winter, but in the spring and fall the foliage is especially spectacular
E G — Google review
Not too interesting and I was unable to go into the museum as it is closed on Mondays. Most of the explanations are not in English, and only the outlines of the castle are visible. There are not any standing pieces besides a monument. Do not come if you are actually looking to find a castle or standing remnant of one. Nevertheless, there are some views that you can see.

Activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming are popular here.
A little far from the city center and bus rides are few and might take much time reaching the place. If you're taking the bus coming from the city center you'll need to change bus ride at Yoboku Bus Station, where the famous Yoboku Morning Market is at. You may ask some info at the reception or bus drivers if there are any. There's a hotel that nearby that offers stay, public bath and serves lunches. I think you have to call to make reservation for lunch, and ask about their closing time. The services are affordable. It's good to take a warm bath after the long walks around Cape Hado and around town.

Astoundingly worthwhile after a long haul with intermittent sleep on board right from Bangkok. We’ve found our lives a wee slower here and enabled us to appreciate those clouds in the bright blue sky, unpolluted air and wind upon our (sleep-deprived) faces. Everything was good except the garbages scattered along the shore

Not really a main attraction and more of a day filler but it does what it says on the tin. It's a lovely promontory with a little jetty that leads to the underwater observatory. You go down some little spiral steps and voila, like something you'd see in a James Bond movie, a 360° panorama of the bottom of the ocean, 8 meters down, lit in coral blue, giant sea bream and herring flapping about trying to get a peek at you through the portholes. Just a small room but I was really entranced and spent a good 10 mins getting my 600 yen worth. Just a really lovely experience on a beautiful spring day. You've Yobuko and the Nagoya Castle ruins plus a nuclear power plant to explore within a 5km distance of this place, so if you're renting a car I highly recommend you tack it on to your itinerary.

I set off without deciding on a destination, but first I needed to get some fuel, so I headed to Sorato in Imari. So, when I got here, I thought I'd check out Kagamiyama as well, so it was my first visit in quite a while. However, it was already before 8am and the sun was shining harshly. The road is empty, but it's already hot, so I head for my destination. We started climbing from the foot of the mountain, but the path was bumpy because back in the day, very naughty people were able to run at great speed. If it's a car, it's just a buzzing noise, but if it's a motorcycle, it's so shocking that it becomes difficult to ride. It's a tough road for people who are just going for sightseeing. We parked in the parking lot and had coffee time. I thought there was no point in throwing away empty drink containers, but the staff member asked me to come to the store when I finished drinking. Apparently, when there was a trash can for anything, people would throw away not only empty juice cans and plastic bottles, but even diapers, so they removed it. You shouldn't cause trouble to people. Scenic spot
Mikaeri No Taki Falls, located in Ouchi Town south of the city center, offers a picturesque sight amid lush greenery. The trail leading to the falls is adorned with seasonal hydrangeas, adding to the natural beauty of the area. Visitors can also explore the Nanatsugama Limestone Caves by taking a boat from the nearby harbor. The falls are known for their symbolic representation of a male-female couple and are accessible via a short hike.
You don't wanna miss the Hydrangea season from this place. I heard some people called this waterfall with "Ajisai waterfall". Park your car for 500円 , quiet pricey but I think it's worthy to help the local people there. Walk for 5 mins for shuttle bus 100円 each way. The bus service it's very convenience for elderly. Disable friendly to watch the fall closely. The distance are not extremely far. Nice walk back to enjoy the Hydrangea scenic. Also there a track long away the river. Please be aware with the heat and watch your step near the waterfall during your visit!

Great little excursion from Karatsu. Don’t expect to be blown away but the setting of this waterfall is very nice with a bridge and a short path. We visited at the end of the day when there was nobody, which added to the magic of the moment.

Absolutely amazing place to visit if you are driving! The water diverges from the top and spill in from different angles. The water is also very clear and air there is fresh. I went with friends during a non peak period late May so I can vouch for peacefulness but there was no one around when we came.

A little busy during peak hydrangea season but well worth the trip. The trail up to the falls is an easy walk with lots of hydrangea and natural spots to appreciate along the way. At the falls it can be a little hectic with crowds, but not unmanageable. There’s a bus to the falls from the parking lot for those who can’t walk the trail. Outside of hydrangea season I imagine it’s equally beautiful.

On our way to Karatsu, we decided to make a quick stop here, hoping to catch the hydrangeas in full bloom. Unfortunately, they’re just starting to bloom—but in a week or two, they should be at their peak! The waterfall is easily accessible and doesn’t require much effort to reach. Visited on 30/5/25.

Former Karatsu Bank, a historical building completed in 1912, served as a bank until 1997. Designed by local architect Minoru Tanaka, an apprentice of the renowned Tatsuno Kingo, it showcases Western architectural style. While there is no entrance fee and only a small exhibition area, the well-preserved original features make it worth visiting. The building offers insight into the town's history and architecture of that era.
More like a architectural museum than a banking museum. There is the preservation of the old teller counter and the safe, but other items involve the architect's style and works. Still interesting though, especially with free entry,

Old bank in 唐津, which is interesting to visit and understand the history of the town and architecture of the time.
Google review
Visiting the old Karatsu Bank building feels like stepping straight into a snippet of local banking history. Built in 1912 and designed under the influence of Kingo Tatsuno (the Tokyo Station guy), it’s fancier than any bank has a right to be. There’s a grand staircase, vintage chandeliers, and a counter so ornate you half-expect a Victorian banker to pop out and ask if you’ve brought your top hat. The brickwork is a weird but cool mix of Bizen-made tiles from Okayama and granite trim, giving the whole thing a proud, slightly overdressed Western look with a Japanese soul. It’s open to the public for free, just five minutes from the station, and the whole building feels frozen in time. There are plenty of photogenic corners worth a wander—even if you’re just in it for the vibes.
Kyushu A — Google review
A decent place to visit. There’s no entrance fee. There’s only a few section of exhibition area however the building itself is historical and it’s really amazing how they managed to maintained almost all of the original parts of the building that was built centuries ago.

(Translated by Google) I visited this place in November 2007. I was recommended this place after asking about tourist spots in Saga Prefecture on an internet bulletin board. I wasn't interested in gambling, but I thought it sounded interesting, so I decided to visit. I was fascinated by the boat rides to the island and the islanders' use of the lottery as a form of gambling to promote the local community. When taking photos of Hoto Shrine, there are times when there are large crowds of people disembarking, and times when there aren't, so if you don't want people in your photos, it's best to wait a little longer. The island's information board said it was a short walk to the highest point, but I didn't know how long it would take, so I didn't climb. I regret not having done so. If you're planning on visiting Hoto Shrine, you might want to consider climbing to the island's highest point.

Genkai Undersea Observatory Tower is a unique attraction that offers stunning views of the Genkai Sea from its deck, connected to land by a bridge. Visitors can descend 7 meters below sea level to an underwater observation tower and observe various fish species like black sea bream, grass puffer, and neon damselfish in their natural habitat. The serene atmosphere is enhanced by relaxing music as visitors watch the fish swim around them.
This underwater observatory is amazing. You get to see fish that are in their natural habitat. The underwater room is rather small but there is little crowd. I highly recommend if you are in the area. Plus the landscapes around are super pretty, we did a 30 minute walk :)

This is a quaint little aquarium at the north-western most point of the Japanese mainland. You basically walk along a small bridge, then descend 10-15m down beneath the surface. There are portals allowing you to look out onto the small reef surrounding the structure, and the fish which live there. The fish were inquisitive and got close to the portals. Overall it was interesting, but very over-priced (1000 yen) for what it is - especially given the amount of effort required to get there. It is in a very pretty area, alongside a lovely little beach and headland. I recommend walking out to the point, the coming back to the beach walking along the path overlooking the nuclear power plant and boat harbour. This attraction is not suitable for the mobility impaired. There was no queue and ample parking. Allow 30 mins (more if walking out to the headland).

This is the perfect place for children or people who are interested in the sea and nature. When you go undersea you can feel calm and listen to relaxing music as fish swim around you. There are different fish depending on the season, so you can see many kinds at different times. When you enter the ticket counter, there’s a spot to buy food for the fish to attract them at various points around the observation station. I really enjoyed visiting this place and was impressed by all the fish. It is a little small, but worth a visit if you’re in the area or are stopping at the beach.

Shigeru Aoki's masterpiece, ``The Sea of Sunset,'' is a valuable work that cannot be seen unless you come here, as it was the founder's idea not to lend it to other museums. On the second floor, a huge tapestry with the motif of Shigeru Aoki's ``Seafood'' is on display. This was a stage curtain that belonged to a civic center in Kurume, Shigeru Aoki's hometown. It was planned to be discarded when the civic center was demolished, but only a portion of it remained and is now on display here. When I asked the staff at the museum why this tapestry was displayed here instead of in my hometown of Kurume, I was told in detail the circumstances leading up to its display. It seems that there were various twists and turns. I think it's worth coming here just to see this tapestry. (Translated by Google) Visited while walking from Karatsu Shrine to the former Takatori residence. It's not even listed on the Karatsu City tourist map, and it's a beautiful but small place. Inside, there are only four exhibition rooms: an exhibition room for Shigeru Aoki on the second floor, two exhibition rooms for other Japanese painters, and an exhibition room for the Biermag Kawamura Collection.Although the exhibits are all small, the contents are quite substantial. Shigeru Aoki's works are also interesting as there are pieces on display that I have never seen before. In addition, the Japanese garden outside can be seen beautifully from the windows on the second floor. The highlight is probably the fragments of the ``Seafood'' stage curtain that was in the Kurume Civic Center, restored by people at Saga University. I have seen the ``Seafood'' painting itself at the now-defunct Ishibashi Museum of Art (currently the Kurume City Museum of Art), and even though the stage curtain only covers the area near the white-faced person's face, it is a masterpiece. Shigeru Aoki is supposed to be Kurume's representative painter, but I can't believe that something that Kurume threw away was restored in Saga and is now in a place like this. Just looking at this might be enough. There were no other customers when I went there, but apparently it's only open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, so I was lucky to pass by on a Saturday. No photography is allowed inside, so just the outside. Kagami Shrine, located at the west foot of Mt. Kagami, is steeped in history dating back to the 6th or 7th century and is associated with Empress Jingu. The tranquil atmosphere created by the surrounding large trees adds to its allure. In spring, the outer precincts come alive with beautiful blooms from Yoshino cherry trees introduced during the Meiji period.
At the foot of Kagamiyama (Mirror Mountain) is Kagami shrine 神社 (jinja) which actually has two shrines set in a forest. When you enter to your right is a shrine which you approach first and the second is away to your left. There is also a third building which many people go to pray to receive relief from their physical ailments, this is bordered by ancient stones. next there is a very old tree which on one side appears like the front of a heavily pregnant woman, the priest explained to us that people wanting children visit this tree to pray also. finally there is a very small museum with very old ( 700 to 1000 years) katana blades (Apparently shrines made great hiding places for these weapons after WW2), and other treasures. The priest and his wife are incredibly helpful and kind and both speak a little English. There are many stories and explanations to be learnt about this shrine, and we hope to return again.

According to the Kagami Shrine Record, when Empress Jingu sent troops to Korea, she offered a treasure mirror to this mountain to pray for victory, so it has since been called Kagamiyama, and the place where the mirror was enshrined as a sacred object was Ichinomiya, Kagami Daimyojin. (Translated by Google) This is a shrine with a long history that sits at the foot of Mt. Kagamiyama. This shrine is a rare shrine that has two separate buildings, the Chozusha and the main hall. Considering the deity enshrined and the history, it may be better to think of it as two shrines. First of all, let's start with Ichinoden, the enshrined deity is Nagaashihime no Mikoto (Empress Jingu), and the shrine's history says that it was founded in the 9th year of Emperor Chuai (around 200). Also known as Kagami-miya, Matsuura-miya, Matsuura Myojin, Kagami-myojin, and Matsuka-miya, it is the Ichinomiya shrine in Matsuura district. When Empress Jingu climbed Mt. Shichimen (Kagamiyama) during her conquest of the Three Koreas and worshiped Tenjin Jigi to pray for victory, a spiritual light began to appear on the mountaintop every night. When Empress Jingu set sail, the people of the land wondered at Reiko, and when the Empress announced her triumphant return, they rejoiced and said, ``This is the place where our ancestral god protected our army,'' and they looked up at the mirror. He said, ``My living spirit will forever calm this land.'' This is how Kagami Shrine came to be called, the village was called Kagami Village, and the mountain was called Kagamiyama. The deity enshrined at Ninoden is Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Ason, and it is said to have been built in 745. In the old days, it was called Kagamisonbyogu, Matsuurabyogu, Itabinomiya, Itabimyojin, and Goryosha. Fujiwara Hirotsugu was the eldest son of Fujiwara Kamatari's son Fuhito and the third son of Uai, and was a man of great talent. However, due to the plots of Kibi Makibi and the monk Genho, he was demoted to Dazaifu. The evil government of Genho and others was heard even in the imperial court, and Hirotsugu raised an army to eliminate them, but he was framed as a traitor and beheaded at Matsuura Beach. Hirotsugu's thoughts became vengeful spirits that often brought disaster to the capital. When the Emperor found out about this, he demoted Genbo and Makibi. It is said that by imperial order, he built a second shrine to appease Hirotsugu's vengeful spirits and gave him the title of Daimyojin. It's a so-called ``curse god'' with the same composition as Michizane Sugawara. Today, it is enshrined as the god of wish fulfillment and exorcism of evil spirits, and as the god of both literary and military arts as well as songs, dances, and music, in memory of Hirotsugu, who excelled in literature and martial arts. The precincts are wide, and as you go through the torii gate, there are water purification stations on both sides of the approach. The one on the left is "Oryu Rikisui" and the one on the right is "Meryuhosui". As you go further, you will see Ichi-no-den on your right and Nino-den in front. Ichinoden has a worship hall with a karahafu facing towards the front. It has a gabled roof with gables and a roof with curved tiles similar to the Buddhist style, which is unusual. Four bonito trees and chigi trees are placed on the roof of the main hall. Our company also appears in the ``Tamakazura no Maki'' of The Tale of Genji, and there is a monument with a poem from the Tale of Genji next to the shrine. The same goes for the Ninoden worship hall, but there are no bonito trees or chiki trees in the main shrine. On this side is the ``Yoryu Kannon Bodhisattva'' which is designated as a national important cultural property. It is a shrine that retains the remains of a mixture of Shinto and Buddhism. What is unique is that you can pay the offering using Rakuten Pay. It is surprising that cashless payment is possible even though it is an ancient shrine. However, only the offering money is required, and votive tablets, lottery tickets, etc. must be paid in cash. There are two types of Goshuin (rubber stamps), Ichi-no-den and Nino-dono, each of which costs ¥300. There was a note stating that both direct writing and post-writing are not possible. When the shrine office visited, no one was there, so I came and paid the first fruits of the stamps for two shrines. ``Umechigiri'' is also available this season. The parking lot is unpaved, but there are about 50 spaces in front of the Kodai-no-Mori Hall. I didn't have time today, so I went to visit the shrine in a hurry, but next time I would like to take my time to visit Kagamiyama as well.

There is a free parking lot on the Yobuko side, where I parked my car and walked around the bridge. It's safe because there is a proper sidewalk, but since it's a bridge over the ocean, the wind is stronger than I expected. Hats and other items may be blown away if not properly equipped. When viewed from the side, this bridge has a beautiful arc that resembles a harp. From the top of the bridge, you can see the Nagoya Ohashi Bridge in Yobuko, as well as fishing boats and materials transport boats going back and forth in Yobuko Bay. The peaceful scenery soothed both my eyes and my heart. The Former Nakao Residence, a local history museum situated near the markets, is worth a visit. This well-preserved house, despite its age, showcases an exquisite level of maintenance. However, it also unveils a distressing past centered around whaling activities. Some of these practices were notably harsh and brutal in nature. Therefore, it is advisable to recommend this museum only to individuals who possess knowledge and understanding of this historical context.

This is the main residence of the Kujira group, who amassed a huge amount of wealth during the Edo period. The main building has preserved its original appearance well and has been designated as an important cultural property by Saga Prefecture and a building of important scenic beauty by Karatsu City (from the booklet) The staff was very good at explaining things using a board depicting things from back then, and it was very easy to understand, so I was drawn in. Through the exhibits in the mansion, we were able to learn how whaling methods changed from net trap whaling to gunshot whaling to Norwegian gunshot whaling as time passed from the Edo period to the Meiji period. The origin of Kagamiyama comes from the fact that Empress Jingu, who is known for her wide range of activities, used a mirror to pray for victory. Kagamiyama Shrine is located at the top of Mount Kagami (284m above sea level). It is said that the shrine got its name from the fact that Empress Jingu climbed the mountain to pray for victory when she conquered the Three Kingdoms of Korea, and buried the mirror she used at that time on the peak. The shrine is also known as Hirefuriyama, or Heel-Flapping Mountain, after legend that Princess Sayo waved her fins from the top of the mountain to see off Otomo no Satehiko's boat. Tajima Shrine, situated near the fishing port, is a remarkable place with a rich historical significance. It offers a serene atmosphere and serves as a purification site for ships, making it highly valued amongst seafarers. The shrine's surroundings are adorned with vibrant thistles, making it an ideal destination for plant enthusiasts. Despite its popularity and unique features, it was regrettable that the shrine office was unattended during the visit.

The god of the sea, the "Three Goddesses," is enshrined here, and it has been worshiped as a god who protects the safety of fishermen at sea. The shrine grounds are home to the "Taiko Stone," said to have been used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the weapons of the Matsuura samurai, making it a place where you can feel history. (Translated by Google) I arrived here while touring shrines associated with the Three Munakata Goddesses. It's incredibly cool how it stands like a fortress on a hill facing the sea! Each torii gate has its own unique character, and the one facing the sea was very dignified. Tajima was a key location during the Mongol invasions, and this historic shrine is located here, giving it a strong will to protect Japan. It's not particularly large, but the worship hall, main hall, kagura hall, and other buildings are connected, and the building's construction is impressive. With the Reiwa era in power, the gateway to the outside world has moved to the sky, but this shrine, which long ago stood on a road connecting Japan with the rest of the world, now quietly gazes out at the sea. There's plenty else to see, so be sure to go and see for yourself! (Translated by Google) This is the oldest shrine in Saga Prefecture. The date of its founding is unknown, but one theory suggests it was founded in the late Yayoi period (there are various theories). It enshrines three goddesses (Takamihime, Ichikishimahime, and Tatetsuhime) to whom the Matsuura pirates and local fishermen prayed when they were distressed at sea, and is widely recognized as the guardian deities of the Genkai sea. Sayohime Shrine, a sub-shrine within the grounds of Tajima Shrine, is located. Sayohime was the daughter of a powerful clan, and saw off her lover's ship as he set off to war by waving a scarf-like garment from Kagamiyama. She was then so heartbroken that she turned to stone (there are many theories). Yamanoue Okura also wrote about her in the Manyoshu. The main building of Sayohime Shrine within the grounds of Tajima Shrine was built during the reign of Hideyoshi. There is also another Sayohime Shrine on Kagamiyama, but it seems to have been built in 2012 to revitalize the town. The garden is coming along nicely, the interior in the older section is beautiful, take some time to sit and drift..a very peaceful, calming abode...enjoy the Japanese proportions and masterful wood work If you're inclined, rent a private room for an hour and host a luncheon - highly recommended. Wow! This place is amazing! It’s even more beautiful in person than in photos. We went on a Saturday and it was packed. It said that it will close at 4pm and we arrived there at 3:45 😅 we were still able to go in, and it was still crowded, looks like it closes at 6pm. Not really sure. We left before 6pm and there were just us and a couple left in the park. The parking is about 500meters passed the park, and the traffic gets really slow when u are near the park. The beautiful photo that someone uploaded, where the floor looks like a glass, it was actually just a table inside the house where it reflects the outside view. It was very packed so we didn’t go in. U can see in one of my photos where there are many people in. I suggest going here in weekdays for better pictures where there are no much people. I was able to take more nice photos before we left, when people have already left the park. The entrance was about 700 yen. I actually forgot. But bring some cash. Overall, great experience. Would love to comeback here.

The inside, there are wide low table. The table face is really reflective so from particular point, you can take pictures as like reflected beautiful leaves. The owner teach us where you should put your camera and how to take good pictures. She was very kind to take my alone photo in the green back!! I think just 30mins is good to enjoy in the house. Besides the view I highly recommend you to walk in the garden!! It’s so refreshing!!! You should come here if you visit Saga!! Enjoyyyy!!!!

Quite an ascent by car to get up there through the switchbacks, but there's some grandeur awaiting atop the summit. During the leaf-changing spectacle of early October, when we went, the park foliage is ablaze with hues of amber and crimson. The sojourn unfolds as a leisurely 30-minute walk around the sanctuary, which has a diverse array of visitors, most from overseas. Maples as far as the eye can see. There's an observation deck crowning the landscape, offering a vantage point for capturing the scene as a reflection on the table. And various stalls, one selling 'Boar Stew' which was a nice little dish, and another place where you can partake in some green tea sipping. The park's story is touching – a father, grieving for his lost son, decided to dedicate his life to nature, giving the sanctuary a deeper sense of purpose.

The area boasts an abundance of rare plants, insects, and wild birds, earning it the nickname "Oze of Kyushu." Visitors can leisurely stroll along well-marked paths to observe the frozen winter landscape or vibrant summer blooms like sagebrush and vine dragon. A serene forest shrine adds to the tranquil atmosphere.

Many of the egret flowers were a little small, but the number was apparently the highest in recent years. Even after they bloomed on August 1st, there were still many specimens to enjoy. Peony and Green Hill Park, located in Hizen-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, is a delightful destination for nature lovers. On a recent sunny day, I set out to admire the stunning peony flowers but discovered that my timing was slightly off; it was just a week too early for full bloom. Despite this setback, I decided to enter the park after learning about a discount at the ticket office.

(Translated by Google) 2024.04.28 A post 3 days ago said it was in full bloom, so I went there. I went in the afternoon, but it seemed like there was some festival event going on in the morning. Admission fee is 500 yen for adults. (Blooming period) 300 yen during off-season. There was also a child price. (100 yen for children during low season) The park isn't that big, but if you include the park at the back, it's quite a walk. The only peonies left in the garden are yellow, It seems that the time has already passed for this year. The season for all the flowers was half a month to a month early (both the thatch and wisteria would normally be at their best, but they seemed to have finished around April 15th), so I guess it can't be helped. In addition, the flowering status was written at the entrance gate. It seems that the time has come between "end of bloom" and "coming". However, the slope on the back side of the park was beautiful with pink to red flowers blooming. Each one had a name tag on it, and it was interesting to see that some varieties had people's names on them. Depending on the season, you can see many different varieties of flowers, so next time I would like to come when they are in full bloom. There was some athletics in the park, so Even families with children who are not interested in flowers can enjoy it. I think so. There is also Irohajima Onsen (National Inn) about 4km away, so It might be nice to take a bath after sweating.

(Translated by Google) I went there excited because it was the largest peonies and peonies in Kyushu. When I went to the reception desk, it said that ``1514 plants are in bloom'' (the last two digits are ambiguous). ``The flowering season for peonies is over, but if you go to the back, you'll see a lot of peonies blooming!'' said the lady at the reception, so I was excited and went in, paying the high season fee of 520 yen. As the receptionist said, most of the peonies are not in bloom. Well, it can't be helped because the time has passed. So, about half of the park is a peonies garden, so it wasn't blooming. Well, the peony garden should be blooming! When I went to the peonies garden, I found that almost none of them were in bloom. There are three tiers, as they are arranged in tiers along the hill of the overlooking hill, but only one-third of the top tier is occupied. That's all! ! ! ? ? ? It's almost not blooming. The surrounding buds are not in a state where they have already changed color, but are solid green buds. This made me think that it was a high season price. I don't know if there were really 1,500 blooming plants, but at first glance I don't think there were that many. Even if you say there are 1,500 plants blooming instead of 1,500, I don't think they are blooming that well. Even if 1,500 Yoshiba plants are blooming, the peonies of different varieties that bloom at the same time are planted separately, so it is safe to assume that you will not see the entire flower garden blooming all at once. Moreover, even though the store was open for business, there were bags of fertilizer left everywhere, and the ladies were giving fertilizer to the peonies, but I guess they couldn't do that outside of business hours... I had no choice but to go down the overlook hill and return to the course. There was a water hole on the opposite side of the entrance that made me think that they probably wanted to make irises or iris bloom, but only two were in bloom. Also, it seems that Botan and Midori no Oka BLUMENFEST 2025 was being held on this day, but when we arrived at 15:30, the demolition work was underway, and by the time we left here at 16:00, the demolition was complete. I wonder what kind of event they were holding... When writing this review, I thought it was my fault for not researching the flowering situation thoroughly, so I looked into it, but the information on the Karatsu City website stopped on May 2nd, before the second half of Golden Week, so it seems like there are no updates on holidays. For those of you who are planning to visit, please note that even if there are about 1,500 flowers in bloom, it is less than one-third of the total, so you will not get the full satisfaction of the high season price. I'm not going anymore. That's better for both of you.

The Matsurokan Museum, dedicated to the history between the Jomon and Yayoi periods, offers an intriguing exploration of early Japanese civilization. The site houses possibly Japan's first rice fields, discovered during excavation for construction. The museum's captivating exhibits depict how the introduction of rice cultivation from Korea transformed the lifestyle of its inhabitants, transitioning them from hunters and gatherers with light farming practices to settled communities engaged in growing rice and various vegetables still consumed in modern-day Japan.
The staff are extremely kind. I don’t speak Japanese but while searching where to visit next, a nice lady brought me a little coffee. Thank you so much! This is why people love Japan so much. I am very happy to visit your town and experience your hospitality. Very small exhibit for the ruin area of an old rice cultivating village. It’s 210 yen entrance. It’s small but well done. There is a nice life size model of a village hut. There is no English of course, but you can Google translate. The hut is worth a visit if you have never seen one.

I thought this museum, commemorating the history between the Jomon and Yayoi periods, was quite interesting. The site is home to perhaps the first rice paddies in Japan, and were uncovered during excavation to build a house or something. The museum had fascinating displays on how, with the advent of rice cultivation from Korea, people moved from hunter-gatherer life with light horticulture to permanent settlements growing rice and a variety of vegetables still eaten in Japan today. I thought the displays were great, and I learned a lot about this fascinating period. Everything is in Japanese, though.

(Translated by Google) Ioko was born in 1845 as the eldest daughter of Ryokan Okumura, the chief priest of Kotokuji, a town in the castle town of Karatsu. Ever since I was little, I was a tomboy, leading the boys in playing. When a child was being bullied, his innate sense of justice led him to stand up to the bully, regardless of whether it was a man, a woman, or someone older than him. When he was 18 years old, he was asked to deliver a secret letter to Choshu by his father, Ryokan, who was loyal to the king. He changed his appearance to a male warrior and headed to Choshu. When Akama was about to pass through the barrier, he was caught by a guard, and as he was arguing with them about not letting him pass, Shinsaku Takasugi, the commander of the Kiheitai, passed by. Thinking that this was a good opportunity, Imoko turned to Shinsaku, whom she was meeting for the first time, and said, ``Mr. Takasugi, I've met you at a good place. This is Okumura from Karatsu.I came here because my father told me to.'' Shinsaku knew that Okumura of Karatsu was working as a patriot for the king, so he listened to his story and arranged for him to fulfill his role safely. After this, Imoko also met Takamori Saigo and began running around contacting the patriots of the Emperor. After the Meiji Restoration, during the first election for the House of Representatives, he endorsed Tameyuki Amano, a former lower-class samurai from the former Karatsu domain, and took command of the latter, winning him the election. This work of Ioko surprised the people of Karatsu. With an innate sense of justice and caring nature, he intervened in matters ranging from quarrels between neighboring couples to disputes in the town of Karatsu, and whenever there was a problem that could not be resolved in Karatsu, he went to Tokyo and requested cooperation from politicians and powerful people in the central government through Nagana Ogasawara, the former lord of the Karatsu domain. When Prime Minister Shigenobu Okuma was asked by Ioko, he did not say he was reluctant and cooperated. Imoko has done a lot of work for her hometown of Karatsu, but the main ones include the construction of the Matsuura Bridge, the designation of the opening of West Karatsu, the establishment of the Karatsu Railway Line, and the sale of the naval coal yard (under Maizuru Park). What the people of the town wanted most was to build a bridge over the Matsuura River. The only way to get to Manshima Island on the opposite shore was by ferry, which was inconvenient and unavoidable. In order to secure the materials needed for the bridge, Ioko went to Tokyo and petitioned for the sale of the Kishidake government-owned forest. Ioko's passion for her hometown came through, and permission was granted to sell the government-owned forest. As a result, construction work was carried out, and the longest Matsuura Bridge in Kyushu was completed in 1896. Even those who had been calling her an intrusive old lady praised her and said, ``Imoko is a treasure of Karatsu and the best female figure in Japan.'' In 1900, the Northern Qing Incident occurred. It was decided to send a comfort group to the battlefield, and as the only woman in the group, she headed to Beijing. We toured the battlefields and experienced the brutality of war and the ferocity of battle. After returning home, Isoko visited Nagao Ogasawara and said, ``The families of the soldiers who died in battle have lost their workers, and even though they receive government allowances, they are at a loss as to how they will survive tomorrow. It is the duty of the people to warmly help these people.'' "I don't understand why we have to go to war. What I have to do as a woman is to lend a helping hand to those who are hurt and grieve because of the war. To that end, I have decided to form a women's group to help the bereaved families of military personnel." Preparations began immediately, and in 1901, the inaugural ceremony of the Patriotic Women's Association was held. Imoko Seiko appealed, ``Please save the money you have to buy a single collar and donate it. We will collect the money and use it as a fund to comfort the bereaved families. If all women from all over the country agree with us, it will become a huge fund. Please join this group.'' An old woman with a chest ailment brought a medicine bottle with her and went on a campaign campaign to drastically reduce expenses and promote the ``half-collar one-pond movement.'' His enthusiasm moved people's hearts. During the Russo-Japanese War, he visited fierce battlegrounds and prayed for peace, regardless of friend or foe. Under these circumstances, Imoko's condition reached its limit and she spent a life of recuperation, but her condition worsened and in 1907, Ioko quietly passed away at the age of 63. After World War II, some people criticized Ioyako's achievements as she reflected on Japan's militarism, but the underlying idea of Ioyako was compassion for the weak. Ioko's life, which was active in the Meiji period when the status of women was low, with an unparalleled energy of action, conveys important things to us today.

Hamasaki Coast is a hidden gem that has recently gained attention for its stunning natural beauty and serene atmosphere. Nestled between Fukuoka and Itoshima, this picturesque beach features a striking backdrop of orderly black pine trees, creating an enchanting setting for visitors. While it may not be the ideal spot for swimming or summer picnics, Hamasaki Coast offers a tranquil escape perfect for leisurely walks along the shore or simply soaking in breathtaking sunsets.
Probably not a summer beach bash/picnic/swimming destination but great for a quick hike. No real close by convenience stores so bring supplies, aka beer.

Kishitake Castle Ruins, located in Karatsu City, is a historical site with a long history. Unlike Nagoya and Karatsu Castles, it requires climbing up the mountain to reach the ruins. The stone walls of this mountain castle are quite impressive. Visitors can follow signboards guiding them through the area, making it easy to navigate. It was once the residence of the Hata clan before being destroyed during the Bunroku era.
(Translated by Google) There are many ruins that are irresistible to stone wall enthusiasts, and it is especially amazing because there are stone walls on both sides of the Horikiri, which I thought were only found at Takatori Castle. There are the remains of a well, the remains of the stone wall of the turret, the viewing rock hall, the tiger mouth, the Nagatebori moat, etc. Furthermore, it is convenient because you can drive right to the foot of the mountain. (Translated by Google) Kishidake Castle is a mountain castle with a curved ring near the summit of Mt. Kishidake, which has an elevation ratio of over 300 meters. The mountain castle has a high level of difficulty until you reach the main enclosure. If you follow the narrow mountain path, you will find a parking lot, and from there the relative height to the main enclosure is thought to be about 100m. However, this road is narrow and difficult to understand. As we got closer, there were several information signs posted, but we took the wrong approach route and ended up going almost all the way around Mt. Kishi. Kishidake Castle is a typical mountain castle built in the renku style, with curved walls lined up along the ridge of Kishidake, and is approximately 1km from east to west. The mountain trail connects near the west end of the castle, but it will take about an hour to go round trip from there to the easternmost main enclosure, Sanzaemondonomaru. There are ups and downs, making it quite challenging. Kishidake Castle starts from the westernmost flagpole stone, has a moat reinforced with stone masonry, a stone turret platform, a well, and a vertical moat, and beyond the main enclosure is the stone Sanzaemon-dono-maru, and at the east end is a loophole, Hime-otoshi Rock. Remains remain. It is a castle with many things to see. Kishitake Castle is said to have been built by the Hata clan of the Matsuura party at the end of the Heian period. After that, it was the residence of the Hata clan for 17 generations and 400 years. However, after the Bunroku and Keicho eras, the territory was confiscated and given to Hirotaka Terazawa. The stone wall remains that still remain today are probably from the Terasawa era. However, after that, Kishigake Castle was abandoned due to the One Country One Castle Law. Before leaving Karatsu to continue our stay on Kyushu, we wanted to visit the castle, and to do so, we chose to walk along the lovely Nishinohama beach. It was 8:00 a.m., and there was hardly anyone there (just a couple with a child and a few other walkers along the way). Our only regret was not getting up at dawn to admire the sunrise. In any case, the castle is visible from the beach. (Original) Mardi 30 septembre. Buddhist temple
Shishiozan Myohouji Temple is a large and impressive temple with unique artwork and a warm atmosphere. The red-painted architecture gives it an overwhelming presence, and the grounds are spacious with various points of interest. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful hall and the large Kanzeon Bodhisattva statue. The temple also offers a garden with lodging facilities, a relaxing cafe, and a hot spring open on weekends and holidays.
I cannot recommend visiting this temple enough. Often I would admire it from the bypass. It’s a large temple with many points of interest. The artwork within is so unique and refreshing. The people who were working were so kind and really made an effort to communicate with us and explain the history of the temple to us. I was so impressed with its beauty and the warmth of the place. It gives a great sense of power and calm. This was a wonderful place to recharge and relax.

Moreover, thank you very much for explaining various things to me even though I didn't know that it was the head temple. I also received the bookmarks I wanted to see, and the Buddhist altar was nice and clean. I almost forgot the time. As the chief priest, I was very happy to come and talk to you about various things. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Some of the people at the shrine are cold or ordinary, but this one was smiling and we talked a lot. It was a great day and I want to give it another star. Just a few steps from the Gohyakurakan guide map sign, there is a terraced rice field that was built in the Edo period, and there is also an explanatory signboard. Unlike the rice terraces built after the Showa era, the undulating shape that matches the topography and the rustic stone masonry remain, giving it a romantic feel. On the other hand, there are the Minamikawara rice terraces, which have the highest stonework in Japan, and the Ohira rice terraces, which have observation decks, forming a group of rice terraces rich in rustic beauty. There was a goat, probably kept there. Toshaku No Hana (Kobo Daishi's Sailing Point) is a picturesque spot that offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding landscapes. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and take in the beauty of nature. It is known as a place with historical significance, as it is believed to be the departure point for Kobo Daishi's journey to China. The area is surrounded by lush greenery and provides a peaceful setting for relaxation and contemplation.
(Translated by Google) There was a time when it was an impressive sight, with stone statues of gods lined up, including a statue of Kobo Daishi, and some humorous ones, but they're gone now. However, it was originally a famous spot that brought to mind the image of Kukai, 31 years old, setting off from here as a Japanese envoy to Tang China in the 23rd year of the Enryaku era (804 AD), so I think it's a good place to look out at the sea and immerse yourself in the romance of history.
