Family restaurant
Los Laureles Mexican Restaurant offers a laid-back setting to savor traditional Mexican and Latin American cuisine. Located on the east side of Des Moines, this eatery serves up classic dishes like chile rellenos, tamales, flautas, hard shell tacos with various fillings, corn sopes, carnitas tacos, mola cheese enchiladas, huachinango (a classic fish dish), quesadillas, and tortas.
The food was great—no complaints there! The only thing that fell flat was the hot sauce—it didn’t have much flavor, which was surprising. Maybe they make it in-house? Service was a bit slow, even though it was already 10pm. Also, when you order soda, it’s usually common to get a water as well, but we didn’t get any. We asked and were only given one cup, which felt a little off. Still, overall still a good experience.
Amber U — Google review
The main food was decent, and the chips were stale and cold. First time our family never ate the chips at a restaurant. The food looked great, and actually, we got it very fast even if it was a little cold, but not too bad. A bit concerning for me, it makes me feel the food has been cooked for hours and is now being heated up and served. Service was okay. While we are handed our menus, we are asked what we want to drink, and my family asks for 2 cokes and a spite. I had no idea the coke products were glass bottles, hence no refills. The Pepsi products are fountain and refillable. The waitress did not say anything. The menu is as big as the cheesecake factory. OMG... Prices were all wrong as well. I ordered 2 dishes that she said was 12.99=25.98 (6 tacos) and 2 items that were 14.99 =29.98 + 5.99. =61.95 + 4 drinks ?14. Some how the bill came out to 88.40+tax=95.68. It should have been 75.95 + tax. That's a huge price difference on menu vs bill. Then she didn't give me a receipt and told me to just pay, ummmm...what. can I have my bill. Not sure if the prices are higher also due to paying with a card vs cash, but I wasn't informed of that either. That's a big up charge for paying with a debt card. Wish I could find my receipt to upload. I will upload it, if I find it. Never again for us.

Great little spot with BIG PORTIONS on each platter. Couldn't finish my great tasting seafood platter let alone enjoy the great chips. Friendly and above all else CLEAN and FRESH. Some big boy platters for sure.
M H — Google review
I really love the options here! The menu is pretty extensive if you don't know what you're looking for, but it's good to have choices. I got the Huevos Rancheros from the breakfast offerings. My boyfriend got some stuff from the à la carte menu. Everything was fantastic from service to food quality. We'll definitely be back!
Melinda — Google review
10 steak tacos & 1 steak burrito just about $50, evething was very blind stake was chewy appeared to be old,no seasoning what so ever after. I called to see if they can credit me some type of way. I was told there's nothing they can do because the manager is not there. Definitely do NOT recommend dining in or takeout! Times are hard as it is and for people to take your money and not give you what you paid for Is unacceptable for me. NEVER will I spend my hand earned coins at Los Laureles again!
N — Google review
My favorite Mexican restaurant of all time! I've been going here for so many years and I've never been disappointed. Great for a lunch with friends, dinner with your family or a great after the bar stop (as they're open until 3 am.) I honestly can't complain! The services is always good for us too. Love seeing the familiar faces.
Alicia S — Google review
We had chicken enchiladas mole and pork guisado...both were very good. The rice and beans were about what you would expect to get at Mexican restaurant, nothing extraordinary but good...the salsa too - that came with the chips - was good but rather thin...the service was very good and the prices we thought were very reasonable...the parking lot was a bit of a challenge...there's not much room there... it seemed like there was a lot of people going in and out (lunch hour)because there's a lot of retail spaces there...so let the parkers beware! Side note: The mural on the building next door is fabulous...whoever painted that is a fantastic artist...
Jack J — Google review
They said if you’re paying with card the prices on the menu are different and they will be more than if you would pay cash. They charge their own tip so no need to leave one! They’re scamming people so make sure to check your receipts!

Restaurant
Malo is a stylish restaurant and bar located in a renovated Art Deco firehouse, offering Pan-Latin dishes and cocktails. The Mexican-inspired destination infuses American brunch staples with Mexican flavors, featuring dishes like tres leches French toast and eggs benedicto. The house-made horchata is a highlight of the drink menu.
Beautiful inside and out! But the murals and decor inside are some of the best I’ve seen in any Mexican restaurant. Staff was very friendly and had great recommendations! Food was brought out piping hot and quick. Helped ourselves to a delicious appetizer of loaded tots with the nachos fixings on top. Then we got various tacos and other Mexican staples as entrees. If you’re looking for Mexican, look no further in Des Moines. This is the spot!
Giovanni C — Google review
We went to Malo for the first time. We had a nice experience. We were there during happy hour so our margaritas were well priced. I had the trio of tacos and opted for the lettuce leaves. All 3 were meat options and all really nicely flavoured. My favourite was the Beef Barbacoa, which was most like brisket. We did start with chips and salsa (which meant there was a LOT of food). The salsas were very tasty too. We need to learn to share, didn’t finish everything and definitely left feeling fuller than I would have liked!
Lorien S — Google review
Had a really, incredibly delicious vegan burrito here. Opted not to add $7 vegan chorizo in because that cost was just hard to justify, luckily is was great without it. Chips and salsa were fresh and my waitress was really friendly and polite. My issue however was with the hostess, who gave an attitude when I asked to sit in the shade outside instead of in the direct 5:30pm summer sunlight. She seated me at the very back corner of the patio next to the alley at a 4 top even after passing numerous seats with umbrellas that could have been opened up. When the waitress came out to take my order, she didn’t even see me at first because of where I had been seated. Rude, college age hostess who I guess thought she was being funny? Hardly. Everything else was great but that behavior really rubbed me the wrong way. Even the waitress was surprised to see where I had been seated.

Nice upscale place for Mexican food. We got queso and guacamole, both very good. I got the mix and match street tacos; mahi mahi, carne asada, and beef tenderloin, all were delicious. They have a nice drink menu as well. They also have an outdoor patio, though we sat inside, plenty of seating options. Lighting inside could be better, dark spots and spotlights in your face at the same table. Overall the food would bring me back!
Sarah H — Google review
We hosted our son's wedding rehearsal dinner here on June 27, 2025. We had 50 people, including children in attendance. We opted for the taco bar buffet with bowls of guacamole and platters of the seafood nachos, drunken nachos and grilled veggies. The entire experience, from the first booking through check-ins and then the night of the dinner, was completely outstanding. We couldn't have been more pleased with the beautiful space, extremely tasty food, and the excellent service all throughout. If it was possible to give more stars I would.
Natalie M — Google review
Went to Malo for the first time and had a pretty decent time. We were seated on the patio and it was cute. The service was nothing special, and the food was ok! I’m not much of a drinker, but I liked my passion fruit margarita a lot (I even finished it!) I think in the future, I would come to this establishment for drinks and skip on the food. They were really light with the onions which was disappointing. I spent $25.28 for everything. PS. look at that HUGE fork.
Ashley S — Google review
Love the vegan burrito with the vegan chorizo. I have dreams about this burrito. You can tell everything is made from scratch. Drinks are mostly good. The margaritas kind of lack in flavor. Service is mostly good. The atmosphere is good, but kind of loud if you're trying to have a conversation.
Cory S — Google review
This is very close to the Hotel Fort DesMoines we were staying at. It had good reviews, so we decided to try it. It was an excellent choice. Nice atmosphere. Great service. Try one of the taco trios. It’s a great value. Everything coming out to the neighboring tables looked delicious. There were margarita specials too!

Old West Mexican Restaurant is a bustling, Western-inspired eatery that offers authentic and delicious Mexican dishes along with jumbo margaritas. The restaurant is known for its seafood options like fajitas seafood platter, seafood taco, and shrimp cocktail, which are crowd favorites. With a family-friendly atmosphere and inviting decor, it's a great place to enjoy traditional Mexican plates with genuine flavors.
Food was really good. Friendly waiter.
Kristen L — Google review
I went here for dinner. I had the ground beef burrito and enchilada combo. The enchilada was good, everything was cooked just right. The burrito was okay. The beef was flavorful and cooked just right. I felt it was missing some ingredients. I normally find burritos to have cheese, tomato, and lettuce. Also, they are usually topped with sour cream. Maybe it's just a local thing how they prepare a burrito. The meal came with chips and salsa. They were both excellent. I had the medium Margarita which was on special. I'll be honest, it seemed weak in the alcohol content. Though it did taste good. The people were friendly and attentive. It was clean inside and there are quite a few tables. I would return again if in the area. Bicycling: The road is not very bicycle friendly. They were working on it. Hopefully a bike lane is part of the project. I didn't notice any outdoor seating.
Tom Z — Google review
We’re regulars here and the food usually good but tonight we did carry out the salsa tasted like wet mildewy rags. They also burnt the steak in the burrito. The chips and queso dip were good. Please address the issues.
Cesar C — Google review
I am from California so comparing with our Mexican places it was very good. The salsa was excellent. They had ground beef enchiladas instead of cheese, the ground beef taco was good and the tamale was small but it had a good flavor to it. I had no complaints on the rice. It was different not having rice and beans included with combination plates. They need to include. The prices was a lot lower than I am used too.
Susan J — Google review
We stopped for dinner here tonight on the recommendation of someone we met. I should never have listened to him because it was a huge disappointment. It didn’t taste like Mexican food and everything was so bland and unseasoned. I ordered the #9 combo plate. It was two enchiladas and came with rice and beans. My husband ordered the Burrito Western which also came with rice and beans. We both agreed that the beans were nice and creamy and the only good thing about our food. The chicken in my enchiladas and in my husband’s burrito was completely unseasoned. It tasted like boiled chicken that had been shredded and put into tortillas. It was completely white-bread and unauthentic. Other Mexican restaurants that we love have the chicken seasoned with spices and it has so much flavor. But this chicken was very bland; as was the rice. It had peas and carrots in it, too. What’s up with that? The enchilada sauce that was on top of both of our dishes was also flavorless. It tasted like tomato sauce that came out of a can. The only positive was that the food came out fast. I don’t think we waited ten minutes for it. But I would rather have waited longer if it meant better tasting food. Our server seemed kind of grumpy and unfriendly, too. I do not recommend this place if you want great-tasting Mexican food.
Veronica E — Google review
Yum! I tried something new to me and it was delicious! Trio burrito or something like that. Had chicken, steak, shrimp, mushrooms, jalapeño, cheese. So incredibly good and huge. Black beans, rice, salad came on side. Enjoy their cheese sauce at every visit cause it has just a little heat which I love. Sometimes service is good, sometimes mediocre. The food makes up for that. Bill was $20 before tip. Enough for 3 meals. Patio and indoor seating available.
Ellen P — Google review
My favorite Mexican restaurant in central Iowa. The staff is so friendly and attentive there! It's clean and has a kind of old school ambiance. Highly recommend the Ashley Burrito!

Pueblo Viejo de México is a delightful spot for anyone craving authentic Mexican cuisine. The menu boasts favorites like tacos el carbon, featuring tender skirt steak or chicken breast wrapped in soft corn tortillas, and taquitos rancheros filled with savory shredded beef. For those looking for a hearty meal, the molcajete offers a delicious mix of flank steak, chicken, shrimp, mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. Breakfast lovers will appreciate that egg dishes are served all day long.
The food was wonderful! Allie was such a wonderful waitress. She is so upbeat and fun! She gave us two different kinds of salsa and chips. The chips were the perfect thin crispy ones which are very hard to find! Everyone who worked here from the hostess to the waitress to the people who helped bring out our food were all incredibly friendly and fun! The food was 10 out of 10 and this is definitely now our go-to restaurant!
Bethany K — Google review
I was very happy we crossed town to go here. Excellent food, service! The restaurant was clean and orderly! I had the Seafood Burrito which seemed to be pretty loaded and the portion was well worth the $15.00! Always comes with rice and beans! Also came with a side salad. Unfortunately, I don't remember the dish that my wife ordered. But said she enjoyed it and also was well worth the money! Both of us also tried the smothered Chili Relleno. OH!! The Margaritas were tasty as well, although they weren't as cold as they should have been, we thought. Still good! We will go back and try another dish for sure!
Paul Q — Google review
Outstanding authentic mexican food at a reasonable price. Exceptional service! Highly recommend! Yum 😋
Daryl B — Google review
Idk how this restaurant has 4.4 stars. Their food was literally the most bland food I have ever had in a Mexican restaurant. We ordered the Mexican Pizza and Chicken Fajitas. The chicken seemed to be Frozen - Dry and bland. Their portion size was questionable as well, as the fajitas looked like leftovers rather than a full meal. These were literally the WORST fajitas. Mexican food always has rich flavors and spices, and these food items had NONE of that. Nothing seemed fresh!! The only thing that was good were the Drinks, and that is about it. I would definitely never recommend this restaurant to anyone, maybe to someone who prefers extreme bland food 🤷‍♀️
Khushi U — Google review
Solid place and good food. Nothing over your standard Mexican restaurant but I'd definitely eat there again. Wife asked for no onion in her fajita but got onion unfortunately so she had to pick them out.. so it was not her favorite. Kid got the cheese quesadilla and chips so can't really mess that up. The salsa was unique! Had a cheese taste to it! I got the chicken and shrimp fajita and it was delicious! The service was slow but they were decently busy so I gave it a pass. Wouldn't hurt to have another server on the floor though. Overall solid food and place though.
Dougie N — Google review
I absolutely love this place. This is where I go when I need some good comfort food or if I'm just going out to have lunch with friends. The staff is extremely friendly and always makes us feel welcomed. The prices are good and the portions are large.
Cadillac G — Google review
I don't know what's the deal with some rude workers there but the food that I was ordering was NOT just awful I honestly thought it was some sort of prank with how lousy it was. I came here before like a year ago and it was fantastic and I was not expecting this place to be completely different that what I remembered. The only thing I ate was the beans or what little there was and some of the taco steak which tasted reheated again cause it was super dry inside a soggy soaked wet tortilla. Carne Asada 'Street taco' refried beans and Spanish rice.
Blakeoms — Google review
I ordered a bean and beef burrito when it came I couldn’t open. The burrito was full of grease and the meat was separating from the grease. The Horchata was water. My mother ordered something with chorizo and meat. I think and said the chorizo was raw like undercooked. The food came out really fast so it was premade not anything I’d recommend.

Taco restaurant
Tacos Mariana's is a small Mexican eatery in the King Irving neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa. Run by Mariana, a Mexico native, this place offers an array of authentic Mexican dishes at affordable prices. The menu includes a variety of tacos with options like al pastor, chicken, chorizo, and tongue. Their carne asada tacos are particularly recommended for their perfect seasoning and grilling.
Tasty food and a cozy place. Vibrant and beautiful decor makes this place a surprise, compared to the outside. Reasonable prices & a generous serving size. Worth the wait for food cooked to order! Not for large groups as the biggest tables seat 4.
Laura P — Google review
Lady at register was very rude. The picture below is how I got my chicken taco. It was soggy the meat was chunky my chicken was a little pink as well. The cheese was wet as well. Wish I could get my money back $24.97 fit wet soggy tacos.. didn't even want to go back in to say anything the lady was so rude. Nene again..
Montoya S — Google review
I literally spent 40$ on trash! Place was empty. The lady in the front was so rude!!! She yelled at me because I thought I can order 1 birria taco and she was so rude about it! Made me leave. Now the food was horrible. more cheese than meat. Shake tasted old nachos was dry. Sadly disappointed.
Big M — Google review
Upon entering the restaurant is extremely decorative and looks pretty cool on the inside. We had birria tacos with rice. But if you want chips and salsa that's extra. Our food took awhile to come out but it was very hot and very good. W restaraunt W food.

Some of the best Tacos I have had. Their guacamole is very unique and you must try that. They also have special birria tacos made with cheesy tortilla that is totally awesome and comes with a dipping soup of beef broth that is very tasty

Really interesting interior with a cool retro vibe. We got the tripa torta at it was really good. Service was fast as well, and the lady at the counter was pleasant. Recommended if you are in the area!

Every time we go between Indiana and Nebraska we would stop here and always had a great lunch until this last time. As always we got a order of pupusas but this time it came with a hidden nasty surprise. A piece is raw meat was stuck to the bottom of one of the pupusas which makes me believe the food ready for consumption must be prepared in the same expect spot where the raw meat is being cut. Do yourself a favor and avoid this stop or risk getting food poisoning

Came here with a friend of mine to try a new spot and the food and service were amazing! I will definitely be coming back to try their Columbian menu next time! Highly recommend to someone who's looking for something familiar or wanting to try something new. A great spot to do both!

It's sad that this place doesn't have six stars. Great food, good atmosphere, and it is extremely clean! Very clean. So, clean, you hate to dirty a dish because you'll clean the plate every time. It's the best Mexican food I've eaten so far.

I dine in with my family, we order our food, carne asada, 7 mares and mojarra frita and I told the waitress, can I have my mojarra more fry, and I got mojarra like chicharrón, I ask more fry not extra extra fry. We coment the carne asada was to small portions and so thin. And shortly after we heard the waitress for far-away tell the cook.. They said the meat is to small, and he said, they said that !! The waitress says yes!!, then later she said well that was they commented at the table and the cook said, so what!! they want more meat??, we heard all that at the table, was so embarrassing . What a shame for them, was bad costumer service. We when there before, but now I don't think we coming back again.

Nestled in the heart of Historic East Village, Bar Nico is a culinary treasure that showcases modern Mexican cuisine with a unique twist. Under the expert guidance of Chef Matt Small, who honed his skills alongside some of the city's finest chefs, this vibrant eatery offers an array of tantalizing tacos made from heirloom organic corn. The menu features standout options like wild boar carnitas and Gulf shrimp tacos, all crafted in a completely gluten-free kitchen.
Amazing food! A super welcoming and hospitable/knowledgeable staff! Also it’s all gluten free! You can’t go wrong with anything in the menu. Chef Matt and his team are innovative with their dishes and do a great job with texture, flavor, spice and taste. This is a must place visit and then visit it a few more times. This is my wife and i’s favorite restaurant!

Bar Nico is a total gem. The atmosphere is vibrant and stylish. The food and drinks are consistently excellent, and their happy hour is one of the best in town. Highly recommend the blackberry margarita—add this one to your list.

This is the best thought out and presented North Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. The flavors, textures, and imagination were amazing, the presentation beautiful, and wine list, though small, well selected, and, of course , it is gluten free (important to one of out party). The service was attentive, without being obtrusive, and the owner even lowered the music in our area so we could talk.

The food was so well presented and tasted as good as it looked. Atmosphere is sharp, with a high attention to detail. Drinks were high quality, and the staff were very attentive. Definitely will be back.

What a hidden gem! Happy Hour here is absolutely unbeatable. High quality, fresh, chef level cuisine at an affordable price. Presentation, variety, and execution were flawless. Not to mention the entire menu is Gluten Free! I ordered Maine Lobster Quesadilla, Braised Lamb Empanadas, & Seared Scallop Tacos for an insanely fair cost of $20 during their 3-5pm Happy Hour! Tacos $7, Tapas (savory dishes) $6, and Botanas (snacks/sides) $5 are reduced. My total was supposed to be $45 so this is a crazy deal. Alex the manager was very friendly and Mary (next door at Kitchen Collage) was the one who recommend me to come try it out. She's a Des Moines local and if you're from out of town (like me) pay her a visit because she will tell you all the spots to visit during your stay! The vibe in Bar Nico is immaculate. Great mood lighting, interior design, clean restrooms, and outdoor seating options if you wanna bring your furry friend. I highly recommend Bar Nico to all locals and visitors. Come check them out and support local businesses to keep them around for years to come.

Our bartender Irland makes one of the best margaritas I have ever had. We got there during happy hour and it was very reasonable. The food is all gluten free and hand made. We ordered way too many tacos because the price was so good. Even the churros are gluten free and handmade and tasted amazing with the house made caramel. It should be on your top places to visit in Des Moines.

This place is so cool, Alex and Kelsie helped me behind the bar, they were extremely kind and knowledgeable. The food turned out incredible, I had the Huevos Rancheros with pork belly and a side of Red Chile Pozole. Everything was so fresh and delicious, will definitely be back.

Tacos La Familia is a renowned spot in the metro area, known for perfecting the birria recipe. Their menu features a variety of birria dishes, from tacos ahogados to burritos and their signature Birria Pizzadilla. The small space in River Bend neighborhood offers street tacos with options like barbacoa, pata de res, camaron, and picadillo.
Best Street tacos around. Great price. Awesome sauce choices. Also when eating Mexican food always order fries. Don't know why but they taste great.

Fridays are special, and the end of summer is special. People don’t just go to a restaurant for no reason — they go to celebrate something meaningful. Just like that, to celebrate the end of summer after work, we went to Tacos La Familia. The experience, though, was disappointing. We waited 5–10 minutes in line before a guy behind the counter finally asked if we were dining in or to-go. We said dine-in, and he told us to “sit anywhere.” We sat down, but nobody came to us for another 10 minutes, and at that point we honestly thought they had forgotten us. Another table that showed up after us got menus first, and only then did we receive one. Since we had been going there often, we already knew what we wanted: two burritos, one Coke, and one margarita. But when the waitress came back, she brought two Cokes and a margarita. We didn’t complain because we were hungry and just accepted both. When it was time to pay, the same guy from the counter rang us up — burrito $11.50, margarita $8. When we asked about the special, he re-rang the order as $9.50 and $8, but when we pointed out both items were supposed to be on special, he said, “I believe you, but this is what I can do.” What does that even mean? It’s not about the extra $2, it’s about the service and the way we were treated. We are educated, grown 27-year-olds, not kids to play around with, and we expect to be spoken to with respect. Supporting local businesses is important, but businesses also need to value their customers. Things happen, sure, but when it happens at your place — the one you’ve been loyal to and even recommended to others — it really stings.

They also offer unique options including healthier choices for those adhering to New Year's resolutions.
Very good! Bright cheery decor, mixture of seating, plenty of parking, accessible, great menu choices without going overboard. Fresh tortillas for sale to go. I did the California burrito. It was humongous. Truly. Ate about a 1/3 and have a nice lunch and dinner for today. Chips were warm and fresh. Salsa had a little fire - yay! Not too much, just enough to spice it up. Server was so nice. Best smile! Made me a pop to go at no extra charge. Bill was $20. Completely reasonable.

With excellent food and friendly service, this is a good lunch option. Portions are generous and the lunch specials ended up being $10 to $12 per entree. The atmosphere is good as well with music volume low enough for conversation.

A very nice restaurant with pleasant atmosphere, the booths have tall backs to them so they feel very private. My Husband and I came in between the lunch and dinner hours because we prefer a quieter experience. Our server was very attentive, kept our drinks topped up, and asked if we wanted any additional dips for our table chips aside from the complimentary salsa. We got queso and also kept the salsa, it wasnt too spicy but was very nice with the chips. Husband got the tilapia which came with shrimp, rice, corn, beans, and I believe a cabbage. I got a burrito platter that had beef and chicken burritos smothered in salsa, lettuce, and sour cream. both super delicious hot and filling. Portions were perfect for the price, we both took home leftovers which reheated beautifully! Will return for future date nights!

God I love mangonadas, and this one definitely did not disappoint 🥭. At first I was a bit hesitant about $15.50 for the drink, but the size made up for the price! We had the tacos tropicales and the carnitas and every single bite was full of fresh produce and inarguably delicious. The service and turnaround time after ordering was incredibly fast; I don’t think that we waited more than six minutes before our food was delivered. Loved the cozy booth we sat in by the bar. Will definitely be returning and trying out the other location!

I am extremely disappointed with today’s experience at this restaurant. We arrived around 8:20 or 8:30. My family and I were seated right away at a booth that seemed to be dirty, with water spilled on the floor. I asked to be moved to a different table, and there was no issue, so we switched tables. Next, we ordered our beverages and then our food. We devoured the chips and salsa and even got a second basket of chips because of how long the food was taking. We waited around 30 minutes, and by this point, we were a little concerned because our server hadn’t checked on us or our food at all. We looked around, hoping to catch someone’s attention, but the servers seemed to be eating at a table near the bar, and no one noticed us. Finally, we grabbed our server’s attention and asked him how much longer the food would take. His response was, “Oh… right… let me go check, because they usually take longer to cook orders when they’ve started closing down the kitchen and doing the cleaning.” He came back and said, “They haven’t even started making the food yet… and I can’t tell them anything because they get upset if we say something.” I was speechless at what we were just told. Keep in mind, we arrived around 8 pm, and they close at 10:30. What really left us shocked, though, is that we have never been treated this way at a restaurant before. As we looked around, we noticed other tables around us were getting much better service. People who came in after us were served promptly, while we were left waiting, ignored, and treated poorly. first and last time I go to this place.

Food is always great, cold beer, nice patio area. This location can get a little busy! Better to go during off-peak hours, but still worth it if you have to wait a bit. Nothing bad on the menu, shaker margaritas are a must!!!

Years ago this was awesome! Food and service has gone down hill. Servers seemed annoying to be at work. "Top shelf" margaritas are now made with well tequila at top shelf prices. Also gave me the wrong food to go and got someone else's order. It's sad because I live in the neighborhood and it use to be good. :(

My husband and I went on a double date to Eatery A tonight, and we all absolutely loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the taste of the food. It was delicious, hot, and tasty. The decor, the different seating options (large booths, small tables, lounge type chairs), and overall vibe was stunning. We've eaten on the patio area in the summertime, and if you have a chance to eat outside, do it! It's worth it. At night, the nightlife of people walking, talking, and having fun surrounds you and adds a little extra entertainment to your dinner. Unfortunately, tonight we were quite disappointed in the service or lack of. It took us over 2 hours in total to get our drinks, apps, and dinner. We had reservations at 6:30 and left a little after 8:45. (Thankfully, we weren't in a hurry, but still). We ordered our apps and dinner at the same time since our server was taking so long just to bring us our drinks out (15+ mins), but it still took over an hour just to get our dinner. By the end of the night, we were the last table left in the restaurant (a few people were left at the bar area), and I had to grab our own to-go boxes from the side area, and located a random waitress and asked her to please help get our ticket or waitress. Our waitress finally walked up with boxes and asked if we were ready for our bill... no apology or acknowledgment that she her taking a bit longer tonight or in general. Our food was GREAT (and surprisingly hot when it arrived), but the service lacked a LOT. Hopefully, it was just one bad night and not an ongoing issue, but I will give them another chance at some point since their pizza's were so good.

Eatery A I used to love this place, and I was so excited to have it since I hadn’t had it in 5 years. But I will say this was such a huge disappointment. Ordered the meat balls and arancini, it came out ICE cold and very old. We decided against any of the entrees due to this reason. But decided to get a pizza, because its pizza and pizza is always good and i used to think theirs was too. The pizza was worse, Caramelized onions does not mean adding sugar for sweetness, and they should say the onions are basically candy sweet on the pizza. It was overly sweetened. Over all, i will not be coming back and this place has gone down hill. Was unable to eat ANY of the foods. I used to love this place 💔 The manager was nice, but still made us pay for the pizza, no worries. I do not recommend this place anymore. Took 10 minutes for out server to even greet us but we were willing to look past that because we were hoping the food would have out weighed the terrible service and the fact the server did not look like she even wanted to be there. It seemed like a bother she was even waiting on our table. Unfortunately that was not the case and the food was terrible.

Great Happy Hour especially if you like pizza. Staff were friendly. Service was attentive. The establishment had a cozy vibe and it was extremely clean. I’ve been to sooo many Mexican restaurants all over the USA and this is OKAY. It’s not the best. When they say authentic, think more American authentic as they don’t even use the Spanish words for their food. Beef is asada, Pork here (I had to ask) is carnita meat not pastor sadly. My husband and stepdaughter love it here. I personally after being married to a Hispanic male for near 18 yrs and ate at a lot of authentic places/trucks…it’s okay like I said. Salsa was good, medium hot, the guacamole could use some lime/salt (asked for lime wedges…not here), yet the tater tots were decent & they have one menu item I’ve never tried or seen before…flour puff chips. Oh my goodness, THOSE are amazing! Would highly recommend that for sure! Yet the other food…if it’s your thing I guess, I would only go back for the chips.

Absolutely fantastic experience! We had the fritters, scallops, lamb shank, Yukon potatoes and bread pudding. The service was great and the food was excellent! They were even very concise of food allergies. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about the entire evening. I can’t wait to go back.
Andrea V — Google review
My wife and I visited Alba for the first time, and we were both thoroughly impressed. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome—their friendliness and warmth set the tone for a great evening. Our server, Andrew, was excellent; he knew the menu inside and out and gave thoughtful recommendations. We started with the fritters (prosciutto, soy aioli, pineapple, pickled peppers), which were light, flavorful, and a fun mix of textures. The roasted beets salad with herbed goat cheese, orange, and champagne-orange vinaigrette was beautifully balanced—fresh and bright without being heavy. For mains, we ordered the gnocchi (herb crema, roasted vegetables, truffle oil, chicken confit) and the NY Strip Stroganoff (local mushrooms, crispy shallots, pickled mustard seed). The stroganoff was my dish, and it was fantastic—the beef tender, the noodles cooked perfectly, and the flavors rich without being overly earthy. The gnocchi was equally well-prepared, a comforting dish with depth from the truffle oil and chicken confit. If there’s one caveat, it’s that the main courses took a little longer to arrive than expected—but the wait was worth it once the plates hit the table. We finished with the molten chocolate lava cake, and it was the perfect ending: indulgent, decadent, and satisfying without being cloying. Overall, Alba exceeded our expectations. Great food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We’re definitely coming back. I forgot to take pictures, but the dishes we had are classic staples—there are plenty of pictures.

The food was wonderful, but the service was a little spotty. I had the wrong entree delivered but when I pointed that out to our server she just snatched it up and returned several (several) minutes later with the correct entree - again without a word. I had planned on enjoying the wonderful creme brulee with a nice espresso, but the service took so long I had to eat the dessert without really enjoying it. Our reservation was at 5:30 and had to leave at 7:20 in order to attend a concert. We'll return and hope for better service.
Bill O — Google review
We came largely due to the review scores and comments. However, I have to say that I left a bit disappointed. Food: 3-star | Service: 4-star | Atmosphere: 4-star For service and atmosphere, nothing wrong and the host and waitress are super nice. But also nothing stands out from the service or the restaurant atmosphere that would deserve a 5-star. The hanging door decor is an interesting / unusual one. But it can also be kinda creepy (if you watch enough horror films...). Now on Food, they do make their own noodles (in house), which is really nice and their noodles do taste fresh. But the reason for 3-star is that the food tastes fairly *bland*. On one hand, I appreciate that they don't over-season or over-butter their food to make them heavy and unhealthy; but on the other hand, the taste of their dishes (from appetizers to main courses) is just very ... subtle. BTW, the two dishes we ordered are based on their recommendation (their specialty). As such, I cannot offer anything more than 3 stars, based on the food. If you've never been here, it might be worth a try; but I'm not sure I'll be back in the future though.
Cheng W — Google review
The gnocchi was pillowy but crusted. Hot and delicious. A complementary flavorful cream sauce played very well with it. I definitely would not have ordered the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer had I known that the “vegetable gnocchi “ meant Brussels sprouts. I truly felt repulsed by Brussels sprouts by the end of my meal. Frankly, the Brussels sprouts were way too heavy and overpowered the gnocchi. It was not a good choice for the dish. Also, the dish said gnocchi with prawns. I’m from Louisiana. Those weren’t prawns. They were precooked frozen shrimp heated up (and overcooked). That was disappointing. Overall the dish was ok and off balance but the gnocchi and the sauce were excellent. The bartenders were awesome and knowledgeable except for the one who told me that “next time you should order the chicken” when I shared with him that the shrimp (not prawns) were overcooked.

From the outside, this place doesn’t look like much — but never judge a book by its cover. The food was absolutely incredible, easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had in Iowa. I ordered the filet steak with potato pavé and chimichurri, and it was outstanding. The service was just as impressive, with a friendly and attentive staff that made the experience even better. If you’re looking for gourmet dining, this is definitely a spot worth trying.

Aaron made the best margarita I’ve ever had! He was so nice and took care of us very well. The woman working at the counter with him was also very kind! Love fuzzy’s!

I ate here for the first time with my coworkers for lunch after volunteering. The food was okay and a little messy to my liking. The portion sizes were large and seemed reasonably priced. The food wasn’t too long of a wait. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here on my own.

My friend and I took our kids to Fuzzy’s for lunch yesterday. If you’ve ever taken four toddlers out to lunch with only two moms, you know how brave we were. The staff at Fuzzy’s were amazing. They took care of us quickly and checked in on us frequently. They even took the extra care to bring our trays of food over to us without us having to ask, just because they know it’s difficult to leave a table of kids. 100% will go back. It’s a great kid-friendly place with excellent service, food, and staff.

Here for the night and had to come here since it was recommended to me, I must recommend it to you. The food is fantastic!!!! So much flavor and great taste. The drinks are amazing, you must come for happy hour. And the service by far is the best! I highly recommend their surf and turf tacos and peach margarita!!!

I frequent Fuzzy Taco Shop and they give me the best service out of any restaurant in the DSM area. The food is always great and you can tell the place is clean, including the kitchen. The staff is always friendly and goes out of their way to make sure you have a good experience. One of the few restaurants that I would give 5 stars.

Monterrey Mexican Restaurant is a local chain with three locations, offering traditional Mexican favorites and a variety of margaritas in a casual setting. The restaurant prides itself on serving authentic dishes, including waistline-friendly options. Guests can expect excellent food served by a friendly team that embodies Mexican warmth and hospitality. Customers have praised the quick service and flavorful dishes, such as steak tacos and veggie fajitas. The complimentary chips and salsa are also highlighted for their freshness and just-right heat.
Food was amazing, especial the Fajita. I ate all in 10 mins 😋Services is so friendly. Will definitely comeback here

I wasn’t a big fan of this—it didn’t really hit the mark for me. It tries to be Mexican food, but falls short in flavor. The seasoning was bland, and it lacked the bold, vibrant taste you expect from authentic Mexican dishes. Overall, it felt more like a watered-down version—mediocre at best. If you’re looking for real, flavorful Mexican food, this probably isn’t it.

We have dined here several times and have always had great food! The last few times though the tables and menus were very very sticky and not very clean. They also try to seat you towards the very back near the restrooms and kitchen areas, even though there is plenty of open seating towards the front. We have asked to be moved several times as the back area is not very clean and is very loud. The only complaint we have with the food, is we have sent the rice and bean plate back to be re-warmed, as they come to the table cold. This has happened a few times. I think they just have the plates already dished up before they actually start making your order. It would be nice for the rice and beans to be served hot along with the entree. The staff have always been very nice and accommodating. The margaritas are also very good.

Nestled in the heart of downtown, "El Monterrey" offers a dining experience that's both refined and welcoming. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted with warm smiles and an ambiance that strikes the perfect balance between elegance and comfort. The menu is a testament to culinary creativity, featuring dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients that burst with flavor. What truly sets "El Monterrey" apart is its exceptional service. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about ensuring every guest feels valued. The server anticipated our needs before we even voiced them, offering insightful recommendations and catering to dietary preferences with ease. It's clear that the team here is dedicated to creating a memorable experience for every diner. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a delightful meal," The Monterrey" is a must-visit. The combination of exquisite cuisine and impeccable service makes it a standout destination.

It looks nice but the meal was messed up, the staff is nice and tried to fix it though. It made my family feel sick too. Non of it taste or looks right, it also smells weird. The place is really hot and not conditioned. There are weird things in my food and hair in my salsa along with it. Also over expensive.

We went on Mother's Day yesterday so the entire restaurant was full capacity BUT we got right in and our server was very quick, food drinks within 15 minutes of sitting down. Kitchen was poppin!! Food was delicious service excellent!!! We will definitely be back on a not so busy night so we can enjoy everything. We felt we needed to eat and leave so everyone else coming in could have a table! Awesome steak and chicken omg! And leftovers today are perfect! Keep it up!!

El Patio Mexican Restaurant is a charming spot located in an old house just off Ingersoll Ave in Des Moines. The restaurant boasts a sprawling, flower-covered back patio that provides an intimate and relaxing atmosphere for diners to enjoy their meals, especially on warm days. The vibrant energy of the place instantly transports visitors with its colorful and festive decor, making them feel like they're dining in a cozy Mexican courtyard.
If you're looking for a restaurant with a perfect blend of atmosphere and authentic Mexican cuisine, this is the spot! From the moment you step onto the patio, you're greeted with a warm and vibrant energy that instantly transports you. The decor is colorful and festive, with beautiful and lush greenery that makes you feel like you're dining in a cozy Mexican courtyard. On top of that, the food is great! Every dish we tried was packed with flavor. The guacamole is a must, and their margaritas are some of the best I’ve ever had—perfectly balanced and refreshing. Whether you're there for the food or just to enjoy the atmosphere, this restaurant does not disappoint. It's quickly become one of our favorite spots for a casual night out or to entertain guests. Highly recommend!

Converted house made Mexican? restaurant. Tried 2 separate times. Limited ground beef/pork menu, with Mexican food made by white people. I don't think a real Mexican ever set foot here. Let's be honest, the food is horrible. The service is good and the atmosphere is interesting to say the least.

Food was great, margs were excellent. I really appreciated the fresh salad, unlike the shredded ice berg situation you get at most places. It looks like home, and feels like home too! Staff was incredibly friendly.

Beautiful and comfy setting, indoors is like an art gallery tribute to the southwest. Outdoors is a gorgeous green deck and garden. But the food stands out above everything else. Best Mexican food I've ever eaten. The bonus is that it's family owned and local. Don't miss out. Go there today. You won't be disappointed.

The restaurant's location is uniquely intriguing. The quality of the food was quite good. The service, although friendly, felt a bit rushed. While the establishment has potential, it seems that the ownership may be experiencing burnout. It's worth a visit, but improvements could make it a standout.

This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Des Moines! The food is outstanding and doesn’t taste like all the other Mexican places. Zachery P — Google review
We arrived on a whim. Driving around at 7 PM on a Friday night looking for a decent place to eat. We drive by Tequila and decided to give it a try. It was a cozy, family-owned place with booths and tables. I ordered a Strawberry Daiquiri and he a Diet Pepsi. The salsa was nice and fresh and the queso runny, but very good. The entree came quickly. You order by number here, although it is a sit down restaurant with menus. I got #42 Shredded Beef Burrito and he the (forgot #) Tequila Burrito. Both we very good and pretty much the stand faire Mexican. However, he also ordered the Mexico City Taco which was to die for. And he said he'd order a plate full next time instead of just the one. Giving 4 stars because everything was adequate +, but a little lacking on friendliness. We intend to come back, although wouldn't make it a priority.
Shawn N — Google review
We really like this little place. The service is fast and the prices are fair. The Margaritas are good, and the chimichangas are delicious. I recommend the shredded beef. If I had any complaint it would be that the portion of cheese dip is tiny and they are frugal with their chips over priced therefore the 4 stars. Otherwise it is definitely a favorite for the locals and the folks there are very friendly!

I really dig this place...I enjoy the atmosphere and people...it has a good location. So far the food has just been so-so. I figured I will give em 1 more chance before I make my final decision. If you're on the hunt for a vibrant spot to indulge in classic Mexican cuisine, look no further than Fernando's Mexican Grill. This lively counter-service eatery serves up an array of beloved favorites, including tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. With options like barbacoa or blackened fish tacos and flavorful vegan chorizo burritos, there's something for everyone. One of the highlights is their customizable burrito option featuring fresh corn and flour tortillas that allow you to create your perfect meal.
I can say with complete conviction, Fernandos has the best burritos in all the Des Moines area. I'm so happy they are expanding to other locations. At their original shop on University, the owner would make my burrito with care, and it made me feel like I was a very important customer, not just another person. Excellent food and great family owned business. Will recommend to every person looking for delicious authentic Mexican :)

I never thought I would go to a Mexican restaurant in a food court and come across the absolute best chicken and Mexican rice I have ever had. I got barbacoa chicken and steak. All of them were good. However the chicken was fire. Not dry or over cooked....perfect flavors of the rice were phenomenal. I'll be going out or my way to come eat here. Nice job Fernando!

Truly the best burrito in Des Moines. Everything is made fresh daily from local ingredients. The atmosphere is great and owner is friendly and funny while he cooks your food. Great selection and good prices. The chili relano is probably the best I've ever had

Foods greasy, and they were going to charge 1$ extra for some hot sauce. Seems like a rip-off. I wish I had gone to Chipotle instead.

It was my first experience at Fernando's today and it was great! There was a line as it was lunch time but they kept the line moving quickly. We didnt have to wait long. The food is okay. The service is okay. The price was okay. I wanted to try the super potato Ole. It looks so good on TV. In real life it's gooey and flavorless. The bean burritos were okay. Tacos were decent. I probably won't go there again.

I ordered Taco John's after years thinking it would be great to have some potato ole's again. Saw the online meal steals and ordered the $7 meal steal. I now see they stole my money with some of the worst food I have seen in a while. The crunchy tacos had stale shells, cold meat, unmelted cheese and the lettuce was actually decent. The Ole's were cold and undercooked. The burrito..we'll never know. Went right in the trash with the rest. Worst "Mexican" meal I have ever had. I've been eating Taco John's since the 1980's but it is over. We are done. Consider this our official divorce. Never, ever again will I eat at this sad little establishment. They need to completely rebrand. It is over for Taco Juans. I would say do not go to this location!!! Do not go to any location, but if you must go to Euclid if you need this food that is not fit for a dog. Eat at night and get your toilet paper ready. This is nasty food!!!

This place is a mess. They ran out of almost all the different meats at the same time, the bathroom didn't have toilet paper, there is trash everywhere, no napkins, no ice, the soda machine was lacking syrup. I thought it was just messy because it was a Friday night but based on other reviews and the complete incompetence of the staff, this seems to be the normal. My wife waited for over 35 minutes for chicken which was empty when we got here. If my wife wasn't pregnant and heart set on chipotle (we live 1.5 hrs away from the closest chipotle) we would've left. I was done eating my wing stop (which was clean) way before she got her food. Where is adult staff because these were all lost kids needing some direction.

Horrible experience. There is no food in my bowl. Literally sitting in my car in the parking lot after just walking out and took the pics. I travel for work and Chipotle is my go to. This place is by far the skimpiest one I've ever been to. DO NOT GET YOUR BOWL HERE!! Edit, just got the food home, rice is barely cooked, forgot to say they had no fajita vegetables. Chipotle is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I honestly was having a bad day and wanted to get my regular order. This order is such a staple for me that all my friends know what it is. So I came in as usual to get my food. I was served/assisted by the manager there named Marcus. While making my food we ran into the issue that they no longer had the meat I wanted. In quick and professional action Marcus let me try the other meats to see which I’d like. Marcus even saw that I got flustered since it’s been the same order I’ve gotten my entire life while going to chipotle. But Marcus not only stepped up but made me feel so appreciated and cared for. He saw I was a little disappointed so he gave me a discount to help with the issue. I was super appreciative and grateful for the discount. He understood my issue and quickly resolved it so I could still have a great meal but even better experience. I will always recommend Chipotle because of people like Marcus. He’s the reason why I love getting the right person at chipotle
Gento L — Google review
I've been into this location 3 times while visiting a friend in DSM. Each time I was hoping it'd be better next time but this is by far the worst location I've been to. The staff were cold to say the least. Not even a "hi" or a "what can I get for you?" The staff acted more like my presence was an annoyance as if I came in 2 mins before closing. The last time I was in (last Wednesday) the food tasted off. Not sure exactly what, but I couldn't even finish and ended up feeling ill. The ice machine was broken and despite having just me and maybe 1-2 other customers the entire place was a mess. The staff were all just chatting with each other behind the line. Meanwhile, EVERY table was dirty along with the drink station, and even the line. I will certainly not be going back. Unless they show extreme improvements in food quality, cleanliness, and customer service I would avoid this location as well.
Todd L — Google review
The woman that took my order east the problem. What kind of upset me was the fact that I asked for extra steak and I KID YOU NOT, she scooped nothing and poured nothing into my bowl but pretended like the did. I’m super Anti-confrontational so I didn’t say anything but they surely charged me fore extra meat even tho she scooped air into my bowl…. I felt super awkward and didn’t wanna say anything. I still give it 5 stars but I literally got 5 cubes of steak and I wish I was kidding
Matthew R — Google review
I’m not one to leave bad review’s, but after my experience today it’s definitely warranted. To start- why is only one door unlocked to enter the building? And the right side one at that. I asked for a bowl with brown rice, pinto beans and chicken I got white rice, black beans and steak. I repeated myself and said I want chicken, she then tells me it’s an extra charge, I again stated no steak only chicken and she totally ignored me. We get to the other side of the counter - I ask for a TINY amount of hot sauce (let me add she gave me the smallest portions I’ve ever gotten at a chipotle for the other items) she gives me an over filled ladle of hot sauce so at this point the bowl is 50% hot sauce. I then ask for extra cheese, and sour cream. I get literally a pinch (she used 3 fingers to grab it I kid you not) of cheese, no sour cream and she puts guac in my bowl. I stated I said NO GUAC and ask for more cheese 3x- each time a pinch was barely given 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ and the unwanted guac. I honestly don’t think this employee spoke a lick of English, which is no biggy other than if you’re working at a fast food joint you should at least understand the ingredients asked for. The place was a mess, looked like it needed a good deep cleaning and if a health inspector came in there’s no way they’d pass inspection. Now for the cherry on top, there was a very clearly intoxicated homeless individual being extremely obnoxious in the restaurant. He followed me through the line, made no purchases and literally had a bottle of Hawkeye vodka on the table where he had his lovely smelling belongings strung across. From what I observed this man made no purchases, and staff had not said a word to him while all of this happened. I asked this man to please back away from me in line 2x. No one else was in line, he wasn’t ordering a thing he was purely harassing me and the staff did nothing. He was there before and after I left, I honestly don’t understand why an officer wasn’t called out by staff or at the very least he wasn’t asked to leave given he was clearly intoxicated and had an open liquor bottle with him in the place. I paid for my $15 bowl of hot sauce and steak fat chunks and left. I honestly should have walked out, not paid and left the food in the counter.

Great spot for fried tacos. Don't expect to find street style our gourmet tacos. Their fried tortilla is similar to Tasty tacos but more on the crispy side and less chewy. Best re-fried beans I've ever had. You can tell they really cool them ( probably with lard)

The flour tacos have a crisp shell instead of puffy. I had the tavo dinner. The tacos were good, but a little to much beans for me. Would go back though. Great to have this business on the Southside

I have grown up on the tacos from Henry J's. I believe they are the best tacos on the planet. I'm impressed by how much updating they have done to the building. It used to look like this little taco shanty but it's looking more and more modernized every time I stop there. I always order a meal with 2 flour bean tacos and 2 sides of fido. When you get a drink you can have them add cherry flavor into it which I love. I ended up buying 2 Henry J's shirt also which was something new since the last time I was there. I just wish they would have had the sizes I wanted.

I tried to break a $5 so my 2 year old daughter could ride the car toys around the corner from the food court(the machine will only break $1 bills). This is clearly not their issue, but I figured they would simply say no if they were unable to provide change for a $5. The woman behind the counter was in the middle of making change when the man told her to stop. She put the money back into the cash register and changed her mind. I then tried to purchase a cup of water as advertised on their menu for $1. He said he wouldn’t sell it to me but would sell me a bottle of water for $2. I obviously obliged and paid the $2 and told him to keep the bottle of water as he clearly needed it more than I did. While I’m unable to comment on their food, I will never be back as the couple was extremely rude. They had an opportunity to be decent store owners, as providing change doesn’t impact their bottom dollar whatsoever, but they failed to do so. Que Dios te haga justices cuando llegue tu momento.

For being the name of the restaurant... The tamales where small real small not bad flavor but certainly not what I would call spicy pork. I ordered pork enchiladas which were dry bland and wished it was better I truly did.

Tamales Industry has awesome tamales! The best I ever had! I highly recommend trying them! You can take them home for later and he makes sure you know the best way to heat them!

It was "OK." $9 for 2 softshell tacos & a small drink, no side items. They didn't have any ranch dressing or avocado ranch sauce, or anything like that. Just salsa.

Guadalajara is a vibrant restaurant with locations in Ankeny and Altoona, offering a festive atmosphere adorned with sugar skulls. The menu features an array of enticing dishes such as flautas, chiles poblanos, tamales, and seafood options like mojo de ajo shrimp and diablo shrimp. The spacious restaurant boasts large garage doors that open to create an inviting outdoor dining area during three seasons.
The one and only disappointment was the fried ice-cream. It's flavor and shell were 100% but they mix shell into the ice cream (which I have never seen before) and it honestly ruined the whole dessert. If they can remove the shell from inside the ice cream, this is a 10/10. Everything else was 100%...raspberry margarita, burrito fajita, burrito bowl. Salsa had a little too much black pepper but I liked that it wasn't a sweet salsa. Definitely will be back! Great service too!!!

Party of three adults and one child enjoyed a nice dinner after spending the day at the Iowa State Fair. I pick the shrimp tacos excellent choice.

I stopped in while in town because a couple coworkers recommended this place. I wish I had listened to them sooner. The staff was extremely friendly. The black berry margarita did not disappoint and the food was absolutely delicious and fresh!

The space is very attractive! They have big garage doors that open for a 3 season outdoor eating area. It's really big inside the restaurant. Lots of TVs, beautiful chairs and booths, pretty bar, everything clean. I went at 5 on a Sunday, about half full. Seated quickly, ordered quickly, then waited a long time. Didn't get a refill on water until I flagged someone down. Server not the friendliest but no worries. I got my food. I had the enchiladas verdes with chicken. The plate was hotter than the food. The beans and rice were okay. The sauce was good. The main dish seemed bland. Of course, that is only my opinion! Big selection of food and drinks. My dinner was $14 and I tipped 20%. Enough food for 2 meals if I would have liked it good enough to take home.

We went to dinner here last night and the service was great, but we ended up with food poisoning. We arrived around 8 and they closed at 9 so I am thinking the cooks wanted us out fast. The server was great though and I do not blame him at all. We asked for to go boxes so we could go ahead and take the food back to our hotel and he told us not to rush and take our time because there was other people that just got there. Needless to say my whole family has been so sick.

Patio is really inside with large open doors to the outside. This was great since those nasty little biting bugs would have gotten us if we actually sat outside. Food comes quickly and we were offered tequila shots after the meal.
Matt S — Google review
I love good food. When I happened on Guadalajara in Altoona Iowa, a short walk away from the truck stop I started a hike. I was greeted with an atmosphere that seemed to calm the hectic frustrations of the road. Seated in a comfortable section where I could see 3 tvs, also noticing that have a full bar wasn't bad at all either. My waiter, Miguel, made himself avaible at my request. From order to eating was 10 minutes max. The restraunt was scarcely occupied, but made the environment more enriching. I had the hot salsa and chips, top shelf margarita, with the chicken chimichanga plate, and a shot of 1800. Total 40 plus tip. The reason I gave 4 stars is great service, good vibes. Rice on the plate had some crunchy bits, but the chicken was moist and flavorful. The salsa had a heavy tomato taste and I cut it with lime and brought out a little more flavor. I would love to come back, again and again.

QDOBA Mexican Eats offers a modern dining experience with a customizable menu of Mexican cuisine, as well as options for takeout and catering. It's a place to relax and enjoy unique flavors not found elsewhere. Customers have praised the top-notch food quality and consistent service. However, some have noted issues such as locked doors and limited portions, urging management to address these concerns for an improved dining experience.
The food is very delicious, the amount of food for the price is impressive and accessible 10/10 recommended and the staff very friendly

Qdoba is my go-to if i decide i want to go out for lunch. It has been my favorite for quite a while. I normally wouldn't write a bad review for something I love but l just cant stand it anymore. There is one employee that is single handedly ruining it for me. Their portions are wildly off. A few Jalapenos is obviously 15. A little sour cream is bucket full. A tiny bit of Cilantro is the entire bush. By the time it gets to the end of the line it is just an absolute mess that only has 3 flavors. The Chicken Adobo bowl is a piece of art, not walking tacos. Treat it with respect! Update. Ordered again. 15 jalapeño that I removed. I still left about 8 in the bowl. What a waste.
Jake D — Google review
Update 10-17-24 - I've tried to go a few more times and happy to report that whatever the issues were seem to have been resolved. Each of the three times we've stopped in, nothing was out of stock. What happened? For 3 weeks, we have tried to come for dinner. Each week, there is a new sign on the doors saying they are out of stuff. Week 1 - out of queso and other things. Week 2 - out of chicken and other things. Week 3 (today) - out of all protein. How is this possible?? I even tried calling five times before making the 20-minute drive, and it just rang for a few minutes, then went to a message saying nobody was available; goodbye. When I got to Qdoba at 6, it was dead (because they were out of everything). Why wasn't the phone answered? What is happening here? Excuse for week 1 - the truck didn't come. OK - understandable. Excuse for week 2 - we only have so much room in our walk in freezer, and we have been so busy, that we ran out of chicken. Excuse for week 3 - didn't even both to go in this time. Sooo disappointing. @Qdoba corp - please fix this place. We love the food but this is insane.

Tiena H is a SAINT and I hope to see her again! She was extremely helpful throughout the whole process. I’ve only been to Qdoba a couple times and she made sure to recommend all of the goodies. Food was a 10/10 and the portion size was more than enough!

Amazing service, delicious fresh made food, very clean and welcoming restaurant! This beats the two other burrito places out of the water on every level! No upcharge for queso and/or guac on your items! The fresh items especially the guacamole and fresh in house pickled jalapenos are out of this world! The staff is always friendly and so welcoming!

Rancho Alegre Restaurant is a hidden gem offering authentic Mexican cuisine. Despite its unassuming exterior, the food and service pleasantly surprise visitors. The menu features delicious options such as tacos, shrimp fajitas, sopes, and seafood soup. The staff is known for their friendly and welcoming demeanor. While the restaurant's cleanliness may need some improvement, the flavorful dishes and reasonable prices make it a must-visit spot for Mexican food enthusiasts in Des Moines.
Have been going to this amazing establishment since the age of 8. My parents used to bring me and I haven’t stopped since. It really is the definition of comfort food. It’s my favorite restaurant to show friends from out of town, have gatherings with friends for lunch or even to go eat for a solo lunch or dinner. I seriously recommend this spot for authentic Mexican food!

I ate here with a friend on Saturday for lunch. There was a counter where it looks like you could go up to order and they had menus up above, but there was also a sign saying see yourself. This was a little confusing to us, but we chose a seat and were greeted quickly. We decided to order some margaritas. I got the lime, which was delicious. they start you off with some chips and salsa where they give you three different salsa. I really enjoyed this as it was a lot of fun to try so many different things. My favorite was the green one. I also decided I wanted to order the side of beans and was super excited when I saw that I came with Quesa on top. These were absolutely delicious. For my main meal, I got several different street tacos. My favorite was the chorizo, but overall, I enjoyed all of them. I also got the Asada, Pollo, shrimp and carnitas. Overall, the food and service was great. My main issue with the atmosphere is it was very sticky to walk on the floor, the seats needed to be cleaned and the walls needed to be cleaned as well.

An exceptional smaller Mexican restaurant. My family have been coming here for years, great service and very affordable. As well as family friendly and suitable to groups of all sizes. Would highly recommend the sopes or any of their signature mixed margaritas

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we were pleasantly surprised with the food and service! The waitress was very prompt and the food was served fast. The food was delicious and decently priced. I got the sopes and everyone tried them and loved them. We even ordered more of them. One of our kids ordered chicken strips and fries. They said that they were very good. We will definitely be back!

Really wanted to love this place after reading the glowing reviews. Out the gate, the service and the food were fantastic. The salsa's were tasty and and overall meal felt underpriced which is rare these days. The main knock was the vibe itself. The whole place needs a serious deep clean. It's like they tried a few years back, and then just stopped caring. Not asking for an expensive renovation, just cleaning it up to make the in-dining experience less sketchy.
Pritesh P — Google review
Great place, great food and affordable 2 A couple months back we went in and only spent 32 dollars for 2 people..
Kimberly W — Google review
All 3 salsas they brought to the table with chips where very good. I had the tacos, two each charizo and steak, they where excellent. A couple of other people in our party had the shimp faitas and raved about them as well. Prices are very reasonable. We had a very large group so food came in waves and a little slow thus the 1 star reduction but would have only taken 1/2 a star if I could have. I will definitely go back when I'm in the area again.

Customers praise the high-quality meals at affordable prices and commend the fresh and flavorful food such as taquitos, carne asada tacos, queso, chicken enchiladas, and crispy chips with green salsa.
#19 combo with the steak burritos is so good. These are not skimpy burritos, these are thick steak filled burritos. Steak is perfectly charred. Green hot sauce is super good as well.

DO NOT order through this business's website. They take the money out of your account and then you are given a 2 minute timer displayed where they need to accept your order. If they don't, your order gets CANCELLED and you DO NOT receive a refund immediately. In what world is it acceptable to TAKE peoples money first, then decide to not accept the order and cancel it, and then DO NOT refund them their money instantly. Your order is bound to be $30-70 based on their prices but if they don't accept it within 2 minutes, you DON'T get a refund for that money instantly as you should. Telling people that it may take 1-7 business days to get a refund is completely unprofessional. And calling them does no good because they have NO IDEA how their payment system works. If you order from them, ONLY call in and pay once you know your order is actually being accepted. There is no justification anyone can give me on why a business should take your money and then decide to accept or cancel it. They should be deciding to accept or cancel it and then process your payment.
Jason S — Google review
Ignored in the drive through twice now. Once was at 8:30 pm and now at 9:30 am. Both times open signs have been on. Employee cars were parked in the back and we still waited about 20 minutes for our order to never be taken.

It's impossible for us to come to Des Moines without stopping here. Glorious food, large portions, super late dine hours, 24 hour drive thru and a fantastic sauce bar inside. An absolute favorite for comforting, no frills mexican food with tons of flavor and guaranteed to fill you up.

Food is great but always have to repeat my order several times and still always have something wrong with my order. I asked 3 separate times for salsa and got none this last time, feel like I wasted my money.
Caff C — Google review
I love their food. I came to this location and the one in waukee so many times. Before, I never check the receipt after I ordered. This time I decided to take a look. Then I found out the price they charged me is higher than the price on menu. For #23 and #24 , the price on both of their in-store menu and online menu are $10.99 and $12.99. But they charged me $11.43 and $13.51. I tried to ask the employee about it. The answer they gave me was the price changed. But the new price only in their checkout computer. The paper menu, website menu and the big screen menu in store are all showing the old price. First of all, I’m ok with they change their price, a lot of restaurants do that. But they should let customer know that before they place the order, not after. So for the experience I had this time , food is 5 star, the price scam is 1 star.
Chris F — Google review
Went here with my friends at midnight, and even then they still had several people there working. They were very friendly, the food came out pretty quick, and was very, very good. Habanero's is a great spot for Drake students to get Mexican food. The dishes are very flavorful and the prices are a bit steep, but the food is definitely worth it. The tacos are especially fantastic and the staff is always willing to help out.

Being from TX, you start to rate Mexican food starting with chips and salsa... That's where I should have known it wasn't going to be stellar. The salsa to me was a Mexican version of a marinara. I had fajita's (beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo). The shrimp was decent, the chicken and beef could use a bit more flavor but the chorizo was quite flavorful. The peppers and onions were good. They only have refried beans so keep this in mind. Our waitress was super nice and more than accommodating, let me put that out there!!! I ordered a Mimosa Mexicana... Which wasn't bad as it was something different. My Boyfriend ordered Carnitas entree and he is a carnitas connoisseur and he found that my chorizo was better, therefore ordering a side of chorizo. He had a house margarita and again is an aficionado for margs but it wasn't an order another round type drink.
Jennifer D — Google review
Good atmosphere and service but food was horrible. Ordered steak tacos i only had one. No real salsa just bottles of fake stuff. Husband had a plate of steak meat with red chile sauce. What a joke cold and the sauce was just tomato sauce. Sorry but that is not Mexican food people. We asked before we ordered if they had real flour tortillas or them fake store bought stuff. They lied and said it was real. To top it off I only had 2 sips of my lemonade it tasted like tap water. The worse meal I had for $40. Husband threw up just made it to the parking spot.
Irma P — Google review
Long island i ordered off their menu - 1/5 stars. Food is okay. Definitely should ensure employees actually know how to make the drinks you're advertising, I'd understand if I'd asked for one and you didn’t advertise your employees can actually make the drink but that thing was disgusting, 4 sips and worst $14 drink ive ever paid for. Will choose somewhere else next time.

Really great drink pitchers and exactly customer service. I'm from Phoenix, AZ so I really can't rate traditional dishes because Midwest Mexican is not the same. But I will say that I had a delicious fajita quesadilla that I loved. The cheese was the white Midwest queso, and it was surprisingly good. The chicken was tender and delicious and I loved the extra grilled veggies.

We had a great time here! The blended magaritas were awesome. My chile verde with rice and beans were super flavorful and hot as well. I dont come here often but when I do there seems to be a problem every time. A couple times they've been closed around 8 pm for some reason. This time I went through the drive thru around 830 pm after my daughter's conferences per all my kids request. Placed the order, paid, got the food pretty quickly and I was on my way home (about 20 mins away). Handing the food out at home and there's grease all over in the bag, some of the tacos were half wrapped. Then I realize they didn't give me the 3 dorito tacos I ordered which the receipt says I paid $12 for so I called the store. The lady that answered was very rude and said I could go back right then and they'd give me the items. I explained I live 20 mins away and I'm not able to go back the same night and I didn't want the tacos anymore I wanted the $12 refunded and she tells me if I can't come back right then then they can't give me a refund and they will write my name down so I can get those items free next time I visit. I refused the offer again and she said "well idk what to tell you. Here's the manager." and she handed the phone to him and he was very polite and understanding and explained that I could in fact come in the next day with the receipt and the card I paid with and they will refund the money for me. They should really train that girl how to respectfully deal with complaints or just not let her deal with customers at all. No reason to be so rude when I was the one inconvenienced and did not call there being disrespectful to begin with. Also the crunchwrap had little to no meat on it. It was all lettuce. Update: stopped in after work this evening and ordered. Made sure I had the right amount of tacos before I left. I didn't have time nor the patience to make sure they were all correct. We had the correct amount of tacos and when we got home all of them were actually right. I was pretty impressed! One of the few times the whole order has been there and all right. The workers were nice as well. I'm glad I had a good visit this time!

I am writing to report a concerning experience I had at your drive-thru location. I was charged for large drinks but received only medium-sized drinks. When I requested a receipt to clarify the charge, the drive-thru attendant was very rude and told me to leave the premises, stating I would not get a receipt for what I had spent. I found this level of customer service to be very poor and believe management should be aware of this employee's conduct
SUNNY M — Google review
I paid $10 for one burrito and they made it half the size they normally do. And I asked them for hot sauce and when I left the driveway there was no hot sauce and we had to go back through. I gave two stars for atmosphere because of the area it is in is a little sketchy.

Ordered 2 chulpas without tomatoes and it had tomatoes and they weren't even warm at all. Also got crunch wrap supreme and it was cold not even close to warm. The manager was sitting down when we talked in and told my gf and I to place our order on the screen that didn't work either so when we did thankfully a crew member came out and helped us on another screen. Crew didn't seem to care much for being there the manager was ignoring people. The only thing that came hot was our chicken nuggets THANKFULLY other than that we won't ever go to this taco bell again.

Rudest drive through person ever. Told me to hurry up after I asked for a moment to look at menu. The said no, I will give you one second we are a speed comparison with other stores you need to hurry up. I replied you can't give me a moment. Taco bell employees responded no and I won't answer your questions I told you to hurry up and you heard me. I was ordering for a crew. I left and went elsewhere.

Fiesta Mexican Restaurant is a popular choice among the participating restaurants in the area. With multiple locations, including West Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, Adel, and North Liberty, Fiesta offers a vibrant atmosphere and excellent service. The menu features an array of taco options such as grilled tilapia, birria, carnitas, and grilled chicken. Additionally, their margaritas are highly recommended.
My wife and I went to Fiesta Mexican Restaurant last night and ordered the Fiesta Fajitas with steak, chicken, and chorizo sausage. We mixed it up just a little because I asked for the corn tortillas. They automatically originally gave us flour tortillas, but corn is the way to go. We also had to ask for some hot sauce. The gentleman who took care of us brought some hot sauce from the kitchen, and it was just the right amount of heat. Prices are reasonable, and the food is good. If you like spice, you'll have to ask for the hot sauce, but we were all set after getting it. Great margaritas. Check out Fiesta.

No vegetarian options. Every single menu item has meat. If you want no meat, you still pay the meat price. No veggie fajita, no cheese quesadilla, and no veggie burrito. Literally every menu item has meat. Otherwise, service and atmosphere were great. Very clean restaurant, just not veggie friendly.

Our recent visit to Fiesta Mexican Restaurant was truly outstanding and made us become BIG FANS! We went for an impromptu birthday party after my niece's softball game, and they were incredibly quick and efficient at accommodating our large group (12+ people). The menu is massive, which is perfect for satisfying every specific (or picky) eater in a group. We started with the phenomenal chips, salsa, and cheese dip. Then they brought the guacamole dip out, and my jaw dropped to the floor. They gave us so much guac, it was a dream come true. That was only the beginning of our meal, so I knew we were in good hands. Truly, everything we ordered from the huge selection was delicious and shareable. Beyond the great food, the restaurant itself is impressive. The building is clean and well-maintained, and there are plenty of TVs to catch any sports games. The bathrooms were also very clean. They have a large amount of staff workers, so you'll never have an empty glass of water (Thank you BTW!). Overall, they offer a great combination of delicious food, a perfect atmosphere for any group, and fantastic service. Go enjoy their food, and you definitely won't be disappointed—you might even become a regular! Don't forget to try their cocktails. Their portions sizes are ahh-mazing, and the flavors and presentations of their drinks makes it feel even more spectacular.

If you’re looking for authentic it won’t be found here. RUDE STAFF!!! Don’t order water as it tastes like it came from the sewer. If you’re not into being in a loud bar like atmosphere stay away. On the plus side the seafood enchiladas were good only because they use real crab! Disappointing!!!

Great Margaritas. Hands down some of the best fresh Mexican food in Des Moines. Shrimp was so fresh. Pollo Loco just as great. Good portions for the money. Staff is attentive, but not intrusive. Can be a little loud when its peak times.

My steak tacos were on point! Of all the steak I have had at mexican restaurants this steak was hands down the best. So tender and flavorful. The rice was fesh and moist. Can't wait to go back and try the fajitas!

This was recommended by someone at the hotel we stayed at. She recommend the homemade Guacamole. So we started off with that & what a great recommendation! I chose the Harvest bowl with beef. It was very delicious. We didn’t have any margaritas but I wished I ordered one. My husband & I decided that next time we come up for the Heartland Nationals we will come back here for dinner!!

I ordered the cod tacos with street corn on the side, it was excellent! My sis-in-law LOVED the homemade complimentary chips and rhe chorizo beans, best she's had since she was in Monterrey. My son loved his steak fajita. The service was great, food came promptly even though they were quite busy. Nice atmosphere, like the more modern feel, cool light fixtures, etc. An impressive menu, more creative than your usual Mexican restaurant. A great experience.

Abelardo's Mexican Restaurant is a delightful spot that never fails to impress with its vibrant flavors and generous portions. Whether you're indulging in their beef chimichanga, which comes loaded with meat and topped with guacamole and sour cream, or enjoying the unbeatable Taco Tuesday deal—five tacos for just $5.99—you’re in for a treat! The restaurant also serves up massive breakfast burritos, especially the chorizo and egg variety, perfect for starting your day right.
Love their food! Their Taco Tuesday deal is amazing! 5 tacos (chicken or beef and hard or soft shelled) for $5.99! And their tres leches cake is to die for! Also, they have amazing (and very large) breakfast burritos. Try the chorizo and egg! One of my favorite restaurants, without a doubt.

My son and I stopped here on the way home from graduation, it was later at night and conveniently on the way home. The food was overly priced, there was no service really. We ordered and then pulled up to the window, paid and then sat there with no interaction until they handed me the food. At no time throughout the process was I told a price or given a receipt even. I was told by my bank app notification. I didn't not particularly care for the asada burritos I ordered, my son got the steak nachos. After talking to my son a couple days later he had mentioned that his food was not that great at all either. He said the steak was very fatty and couldn't eat hardly any of it. Not recommended
Ashlee M — Google review
If you are looking for somewhere to eat after midnight, then this is a so-so option. Not the greatest, but not the worst either. Centrally located by the capital, alot of menu items to choose from, fast, friendly service, & affordable prices. I give Abelardos @ this location by the capital a 3 out of 5 stars. Missing more stars due to the food quality could've been better.

I'm torn on how to rate the food. I had the beef chimichanga plate and was very disappointed! My chimi had lots of beef but was also not what I have gotten other places. For one thing, the chimi was put on top of the "salad". The rice was bland and very sticky. The beans were also tasteless. My husband said his 2 steak burritos were good but he was also disappointed with the rice. After paying $32. for a take out order, I don't know if we'll be back or not.
Grace M — Google review
Ordered from Door Dash for lunch. Beef chimichanga with rice and beans. Took about 30 minutes for delivery yet good was still hot. Included 2 kinds of salsa/sauce. Also had extra napkins and silverware. Nice touch. I liked it all and the portion was huge. Enough for 3 lunches. $12 for the food, then the usual rip off from Door Dash. It was my first time ordering and it was all good! Lots of meat in the chimi, guac and sour cream on top. One of the salsas was spicy which I loved. Beans and rice standard but good none the less. I will eat there again.

I LOVE Abelardo's absolutely love their Southside location. This is the 5th time I have ordered from this location as I recently moved to this side of town and 4 of 5 orders have been wrong. This is my guilty pleasure and somethimg about getting something i didnt order really makes this so much worse. Just be aware when you order their Chicken Fajita Super Fries be ready for a surprise, it may be nachos, it may not be chicken, it may be missing every fajita veggie... who knows.

Vegan restaurant
El Michoacano Taqueria is a casual Mexican eatery near Merle Hay Mall that offers a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The restaurant provides traditional Mexican street food with an extensive vegan menu, including options like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and empanadas. The colorful decor adds to the festive vibe of the place, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed meal with friends or family.
Excellent! We have had a lot of Mexican food, but this is the best we have had so far in DSM. Had we only found the taco spot sooner.
Marc L — Google review
Amazing authentic Mexican food! I am so happy there is a vegan option for every item on the menu!! It’s such a great feeling to not have limited options and to actually experience all the traditional styles with different vegan alternatives. They also have meat options, so everyone in your group has something to choose from — love that. I really wish more restaurants would adopt this method! Everything I’ve tried so far has been phenomenal: • Vegan soyrizo Mexi-gyro: 12/10 🔥 • Vegan enchiladas: 10/10 • Vegan flautas: 10/10 • Vegan tacos • Cactus: 4/10 • Soyrizo: 6/10 (I don’t love tacos in general so that’s not on them) • Vegan asada fries: 10/10 The customer service is great, the items are affordably priced, and the staff is clearly very hardworking. You can tell they’re passionate about what they do and it really shows in the quality of the food. I’d LOVE to see a location open closer to where I live in Pleasant Hill or Altoona, but that’s just me being selfish because the food is that good. 😅
Cassidy B — Google review
Some of the best tacos in Des Moines. Highly recommend Michoacána which is beef with a little extra spice and grilled onions. They also have a vegan version which is legit! The churro ice cream is also amazing, tastes similar to Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. They also have some interesting agua frescas like egg nog, horchata expresso, and pecan. Their classic jamaica is perfect too.
Jake G — Google review
We went late afternoon. You order at the counter and they call your order when it’s ready. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food came out hot and delicious. You really get a good value for your money. The flavor was so good and the meats were cooked well. Reminded me of my family’s cooking. We also took home a strawberry Agua Fresca and YUM. Can’t wait to try the other flavors. We will definitely be back and this is our new go-to Mexican for our neighborhood.
Christina M — Google review
The food was amazing. I got food for three of us and everyone loved it. My son loves the ice cream. A ton of vegan options also. Vegan versions of most of the menu available.

Paleteria La Michoacana is not just your typical ice cream shop. Located in the Capitol East neighborhood, this Mexican eatery and grocery store offers a diverse range of frozen treats, including hand-dipped ice cream and a variety of paletas (Mexican popsicles). I don’t know if they ran out of meat or what but i ordered pastor tacos and got this. Tasted more like birra. My husband also ordered asada fries and got the same type of meat! I loved this place so i don’t know if they just ran out of meat and only had birra meat The photo is supposedly pastor tacos

i just really love their mangonada & mango chile sorbet/ice cream. love the tortas too
Joyce W — Google review
Got food poisoning from eating here. Symptoms continue to persist a week later. Aside from that, elote was waaaay too salty and mangonada consisted mostly of the Chamoy sauce.
Anonymous T — Google review
The staff spoke limited English when we came in but they understood my Spanish well enough. I love these places! They have a vast selection of "paletas" which are Mexican popsicles. My favorite is the strawberries and cream paleta--"fresa con crema". They also offer milkshakes or serve their ice cream by the scoop. There's a wide variety of novelty foods you can order as well like walking tacos with Flaming Hot Doritos!

I liked to go here with the family for food and an ice cream. It used to be very good, but the quality has declined. I hope to see it come back up so we can enjoy it again! On our last visit I had a chicken torta with fries. I will say that it could have used a little more chicken but tasted good.

We placed an order online and it was ready for pick-up in 20 minutes. The food was fresh and tasty. Loved the salsa.
Erin H — Google review
Good! Went for lunch at noon. They have refreshed a former Village Inn. Bar seating as you walk in the door, then 2 separate dining areas on each side. Chips and salsa free to start- says in the menu first 2 bowls on them, $2.99 after that. Loved the salsa. Kick without burning heat. Thick but not chunky. Nice crisp chips. Extensive menu! Like 12 pages extensive. I went for the Texas Fajitas- 1/2 lunch special for $9.50. Had steak, chicken, shrimp. 2 flour tortillas, beans, rice, salad, sour cream came on the side. Fresh green pepper and onion. It was nice that the veggies retained some color and crunch. Lots of times overcooked and just a swampy mess. Ratio of meat to veggie great. The chicken and shrimp were good. The steak in mine was all gristle. So hence the loss of a star. Friendly service. Clean environment. Employees masked. Definitely will go back- many items on the menu looked yummy.
Ellen P — Google review
Salsa was fantastic! Service was good, and food served fast.
Kim V — Google review
Iowa ... Mexican food hummm? Well I am in Iowa so don't expect San Diego type Mexican food flavor. I will say you get a lot of tasty food for the price so value Plus. Otherwise for my taste just kind of bland. Salsa is good, again my taste is looking for a lot more heat or even some heat. The chips were fresh hot and delicious. I got a seafood chimichanga and it was loaded with crab and shrimp but otherwise good. They have a vast selection, huge beers I know cuz that's what I tried :-) The flavors are fit for a midwesterner but certainly not a southwesterner. Places clean but dated but the staff is super friendly. Great place to take the family and not spend a lot and get a lot!

7/24: Good food, a little bland, modest prices and good service. Generally large portions, you get a lot of bang for your buck here.
Jim C — Google review
Watch your credit card amounts. I tip and wrote amount on my copy, when processed thru my bank amount was higher than I had given. Salad croutons were soggy and stale. Chicken was cut very thin stripes, piece of chicken didn't even look like chicken or tasted like chicken.
Coco B — Google review
We LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. We go here for all our families bdays as a tradition and Maria is our go to server. We love the service and the molcajetes. Our kids love this place just as much. They always get to pick a bottled soda from the front and feel so “cool” bc of that.

We had lunch at Primos Tex-Mex Bar and Grill. This is in the old Village Inn on Army Post across from Southridge Mall. It was okay but not anything special. I love Tex Mex when in the southwest but I didn’t get that from Primos so I ended up ordering a taco salad. I’d give it a 6 out if 10.

10/10. This place nailed it. Had the double smash burger upgraded the fries. The burger was everything you'd ever want from a burger. Way better than Zombie burger and for me a step above Lucilles. The atmosphere reminds me of a quiet cafe off of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Just a quiet laid back no hurry vibe. Will definitely be returning.

630 on. Friday night. Seat yourself. Live music started at 7. Plenty of spaces for our party of 2. We chose a table. There are booths and bar seating as well. Smaller intimate space with low lighting. Hollywood art, big mirrors, fancy chandelier. Nice and clean. Seasonal outdoor seating available. Lots of specialty cocktails- we had a blueberry mojito and a fig bees knees. Both delightful. Menu selection is simple- which I personally loved. I get overwhelmed with too many choices! Some salads, sandwiches, small plates to share, etc. We both chose the double stack burger. Delicious!! Plenty big, too. Fries and side salad pretty standard and good. Bill was $27 each as we had the same priced items. Before tip. Service was good. No complaints!
Ellen P — Google review
Brought friends, from out of town, here to have some apps and cocktails after doing some shopping in The East Village. Loved the atmosphere when we walked in.. found a table right away.. sat down and then watched another group walk in behind us and seat themselves.. the waitress immediately gave the other table waters and menus. We patiently waited until we watched the waitress take the other tables drink orders. I then walked up to the bar and asked for menus. I was handed a single one. The vibe was just odd. I will say that the cocktails and the food were delicious.. not sure if the waitstaff was just having an off night but made us feel very unwelcome.

Great small, intimate setting with a bar and a variety of seating. They have live jazz music every Saturday starting at 8pm. Food and drinks were phenomenal. There was a vast selection of signature cocktails which were great! All the food that we had was very fresh tasting. Their frites were tasty as well. If it's cold outside, might want to bring something warmer because it does get chilly when the door is opened. Will definitely be back!

If you're on the hunt for a taste of authentic Southern cuisine, look no further than Good Eatin's. This delightful eatery serves up generous portions of fried chicken and catfish, alongside comforting sides like macaroni and cheese, collard greens, sweet potatoes, baked beans, spaghetti, potato salad, and fries. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming; patrons are greeted with friendly smiles from knowledgeable staff who guide you through the menu.
Random stop and might have found a hidden gem! Honestly outside and even inside was a little questionable but we gave it a shot.. Service was phenomenal, and the food was delicious!! My wife and I had the "wing dings" traditional wings. They were a tad small but got 8 of them and 2 sides for only $15! The wings were crispy and juicy! Nothing mind blowing but better than many places we have been to for wings. I had the collard greens and turkey for the side (x2) and my wife got the green beans with potatoes and mac and cheese. All the sides were great! Kid got a strawberry cake for dessert and said it was good as well. Staff was super friendly and more than one person stopped by to see if we needed anything MULTIPLE times! Oh... and free warm buns while ya wait!! If you're in the area looking for something different.. definitely give this a shot! They even have catfish which I'll be trying next time!
Dougie N — Google review
We have been wanting to try Good Eatin's since they moved to our neighborhood. I am originally from rural West Virginia, my wife's family originally from not too far away. I grew up with one sort of southern cuisine, she grew up with another. There are not many places that serve soul food in this town, this may be the best. (there is at least one more we need to go try). We started with the Philly Steak & Cheese Egg Rolls. Creamier than your average Philly Cheese Steak, but with the same glorious flavor, offset by the crunch of the egg roll wrapper. Part one was a rousing success. Then came the main courses. My wife got Chicken Wings, Collard Greens and Jalapeno Corn. The corn is magic. I normally don't like Greens much, but these were magnificent, and the Chicken was juicy and delicious. I had the Meatballs, Potato Salad and Baked Beans. The Potato Salad was summer-y, tangy and perfect. The Baked Beans were unlike any I have ever had. It was a brand new taste for me, and I will have them again when I go back. The Meatballs themselves were quite good, but when you add the BBQ sauce they have to it they spark up and are delicious. You get a lot of food. We had plenty for lunch the next day. The staff are friendly, have a bit of silliness to them. They really seem to care how your evening is going. They are extremely helpful. It's pretty casual, not all that speedy, so take your time, enjoy the conversation with the folks you are with. This is a place to be savored, not to rush through.
Eric C — Google review
Service was a little slow at first, when we walked in the cashier was cashing someone out and told us to have a seat and then we didn't see anyone for a while we were kinda confused in if we ordered at the table or counter but then the waitress came an she was very attentive the rest of our visit. We got the fried pickles and Philly cheesesteak egg rolls for appetizer. The fried pickles were good. I like that their Spears and not chips Philly cheesesteak rolls were AMAZING! Full of steak that was very flavorful and gooey cheese and the perfectly crisp wrap. My husband had the catfish, mac and cheese, pinto beans with turkey, an jalapeno corn. I got the wings, beans an collard greens. The breading on the catfish and wings were different but they were both very good, perfectly crisp and very well seasoned. Pinto beans had pieces of smoked turkey they delicious flavor I finished them first, The greens were very good and cooked perfectly. It's hard to find those anywhere else in town, especially cooked right. My husband said mac and cheese and corn were both very good as well. The portions are very generous for the price. We will definitely be back to try more menu items and to get the egg rolls and beans again!
Susanna P — Google review
After a very long day, I stopped in to try a new place. I was greeted quite sweetly. My waitress was also very kind and very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was fabulous!!! Real southern food. With great flavors. I had the okra to start & is the best I've had in the Des Moines area. Then I had the chicken wing dinner with potato salad and jalapeño corn. It also came with 2 very warm dinner rolls that just melted in my mouth. The potato salad is better than my Mom's & I love my Mom's. I would highly recommend Good Eatins if you enjoy the flavors of southern cooking, beautiful & friendly staff and a very comfortable atmosphere that just feels like eating dinner at home. Thank you so much for your kindness and amazing food & service. I will be back with family and friends.
Holly N — Google review
We had catfish, collard greens, beans with potatoes, cornbread, and sweet tea. I think my plate lasted about 3 minutes. This stuff is good. I could make a meal just out of their appetizers. I'm going to hit this place again. It reminds me of the food I used to get at some of the army installations in the South.
Greg C — Google review
I ordered the chicken wing meal, and it came with 2 sides. Friend ordered the catfish meal. Service was great food served hot and delicious!

Very good burritos and I love their salsa. I will say that the burritos do not hold together very well for eating.

The young girl tends to serve her food with attitude, while I got less for my money, while others were are getting more for there money as in meat and sides.
Talks S — Google review
Needs a little more consistency. First few times a went it was amazing. The ingredients are great and I love the way they lightly grill their burritos to keep the tortilla in place. The last couple of times, however, the person making the burrito did not miss the ingredients up, so I was taking bites of only sour cream or only steak or only rice. Not sure if it was just the individual making it or what?

I tried the one out at the mall in Altoona. The food was really good from the little I did eat, I couldn’t finish because I found a long hair in it. I had to throw it away.
