Italian restaurant
Bar
Restaurant
Centro is a popular Italian restaurant located in downtown Des Moines, housed in a former Masonic temple with high ceilings and vintage decor. The menu features contemporary Italian cuisine, including handmade pastas and cured meats curated by chef Derek Eidson. The restaurant is known for its pizza/salad combos and homemade breads from the connected lunch spot South Union. Centro also hosts monthly specialty dinners curated by Formaro, offering unique dishes to a group of 50 diners.
I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Centro. I ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca, which was amazing. The chicken was moist and tender. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was full of flavor. The service was good and meal was fairly priced. I would highly recommend.
Mark G — Google review
Just the fact that they charged us to pay by credit card, and then we had to pay higher tax because of that, makes me not want to go back, and I enjoyed the salad, but the pizza was disappointing. We started with the Caesar which was very good and I liked the anchovies. The pizza was a four cheese with tomato sauce. Horribly tasteless, I make better pizza at home, and my tomato sauce actually has flavour. This was just coloured red and the entire pizza just tasted of garlic. It was tasteless bread with the texture of cheese that tasted like chunks of crushed garlic. Then to top it off, I realised once home that they charged an additional $1.61 (2.75%) to pay via credit card, and then the tax we paid went from $4.10 to $4.22. If anything this charge should be after tax and not increase our bill. This is daylight robbery and a disgrace to hard working people. We live down the road and we would have gone back, but this is just unacceptable

I visited this restaurant after seeing it recommended in a food review, but unfortunately, my experience did not go as I had hoped. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty, and since I had a broken foot, I was hoping to sit at a booth or a regular table. However, I was only offered a seat at the bar, with the option of waiting 20 minutes to sit outside on the patio. I ordered a pizza, which is priced at a premium compared to other places in the area. After placing my order at the bar, I was left unattended for about 35 minutes until another staff member delivered my food. During this time, I did notice another server beginning her shift, setting up her station with care and using gloves, which I appreciated. When I was ready to leave, I asked for a box. My five remaining slices were placed in a styrofoam container stacked directly on top of each other, which made them stick together. I asked if they could be placed in a regular pizza box instead, but the slices were transferred by hand without gloves, which raised some concerns for me. When I asked about this, I was told he dose not ware gloves for boxing pizza and was directed to speak with a manager. After waiting for about 10 minutes without any response from management, I decided to leave. I truly wanted to enjoy my visit here, but unfortunately, the service left me feeling unwelcome. I hope this feedback helps the restaurant improve, as I believe the potential for a much better experience is there.

Guys, the salad could’ve been great if we could actually taste the vegetables — instead, it was drowned in a sweet dressing. The meat was extremely poor quality; we couldn’t even eat the steak. As for the service… it was disappointing. No one cleared the dirty plates, I didn’t even get a proper dinner plate and had to eat from a dessert plate. On top of that, the waitress brought all the food out at once and just stood there waiting while we scrambled to make room.
Olga D — Google review
We got a large half cheese, half peperonni pizza. They put extra sauce on the plain cheese but not on the Peperoni side. Crust was crispy and very fresh tasting. Great tasting cheese, though the after taste was garlicy, so definately a garclic flavor to it. Overall, I'd rate it a 7.1 out of 10.
GregMic — Google review
Centro had potential, but my experience just didn’t connect this time. The vibe was nice, but the execution felt a little off from the timing of the service to the overall balance of the meal. The atmosphere had energy, but the follow-through missed a few details that matter. I’m all for growth and consistency, so I’ll check back again later to see how they evolve. Louie K’s Up I don’t bash, I build. Honest feedback makes the culture stronger. 💯🔥

Wow. Centro is fantastic. This is easily the best Italian food in Des Moines and top 5 favorite Italian places I’ve ever been. Our server, Grace, was fantastic. I had the spicy sausage rigatoni and it was phenomenal. The desserts were unreal good. If you’re in Des Moines and looking for a high quality restaurant experience, I highly recommend Centro.

Brasserie
Django is a casual and family-friendly brasserie that offers classic French dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant, opened by Formaro and Paul Rottenbergs Orchestrate Hospitality, received a Best New Restaurant nomination in 2009. Known for its accessible French cuisine, Django also surprises diners with its delicious made-to-order burgers like Le Royale with Cheese. While the menu features traditional French fare, the restaurant's onion rings are highly recommended as a delightful surprise.
These photos are from 2 different dinners in the month of January 2025. Django has always and will always be my wife’s favorite French-American restaurant. The food, service and atmosphere is impeccable, and the high level of detail to menu requests is something to be proud of. I’ve always had a great meal here, and the wine selection and knowledge of the wine selections by the waiting staff is nothing short of beautiful.
Eric J — Google review
For high end dining it's tough to beat Django. The elegant ambiance and excellent service set it apart. Maryann was attentive and friendly. Save room for tasty deserts, especially the cherry sundae; the tartness and sweet explode your tastebuds.

We are here for Senior Games and seven of us had a delicious dinner on the patio. Our waitress, Debbie was great. We were too full for dessert. We are thrilled we stopped here for one of our dinners in Des Moines.

Desserts 10/10. Atmosphere 10/10. We were kind of ignored a couple of times. I personally didn’t like the pork chops but this looks like a place that you can have a nice date or celebration depending on the personnel that assist you.
Darkis S — Google review
Celebrated my birthday with family and friends. Excellent food and service. I loved the low dim lighting and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and specific ingredients. Highly recommend!
Araceli C — Google review
The pork chop had almost no flavor other than the sauce. The Beef Bourignon needed salt. The escargot, cherry sunday and bread pudding were great. Our food took wayy too long to come out. Our server walked by us several times without asking if we were ok. I mentioned that I wanted my wine paired with my meals (specifically asked which wines would go well with my food) and the wine was brought 15 minutes before my food. Tried to have a conversation with manager about the 5 course dinner they are having on the 17th and I was met with very short responses. Overall, I wasn't happy with this experience at all. I doubt we will be back.

Me and my group had the best experience at Django for a friend’s birthday dinner. We had poutine & oysters as appetizers, I had the beef bourguignon as my entree, and for dessert we shared the creme brûlée. I cant say enough how delicious the food was- it was a meal I’ll be thinking about for awhile. We also had lotsss of espresso martinis & as true connoisseurs of the cocktail (for better or worse) we all agreed it’s the best in the area. Our server (I believe her name was Loretta) was absolutely OUTSTANDING. We felt so well taken care of from start to finish.
Maddie J — Google review
My husband and I love this place. We've been coming here for a few years and it's always quality food and a quality experience. Their escargot, and their mussels, are top notch, the likes of which I've only had in France/Belgium. This is one of the places we always bring guests who come to visit us. While it might be priced a bit more than a casual restaurant, it's not ridiculously expensive like some other places in the area, and it's amazing quality for what you pay.

Hamburger restaurant
American restaurant
Cocktail bar
Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is a trendy American restaurant and cocktail bar with a playful horror theme. The menu features over 20 unique burgers with creative names like Dead Moines, The Walking Ched, Undead Elvis, and Juan of the Dead. In addition to the burger options, there are vegan choices and a delicious pork tenderloin sandwich. This popular spot gained fame for its inventive offerings such as the Walking Ched burger with a deep-fried macaroni and cheese bun.
This is probably my all-time favorite restaurant due to the fantastic food, creativity of the menu and the atmosphere. I am a huge fan of Zombie movies and shows. I love all the decor throughout the restaurant, and the Zombie news on the back of the menu is a nice touch. Anytime we are in Des Moines we stop here for dinner. Tonight was our 4th time eating dinner here. The food and service is always fantastic. The prices are reasonable. My only complaint is they are always sold out of merchandise. So far we have only been able to buy a couple koozies. They have some really cool T-shirts and I would love to own one someday.
Will G — Google review
Unique place with great food! It was relatively busy when we arrived with a 25 minute wait to dine inside Zombie Burger. They also had patio seating for a slightly shorter wait. While waiting we took the opportunity to do some of the photo ops and noticed a Ramen place attached. Turns out, it's all the same place with the same menu and this side could serve us immediately. The lady was super welcoming and friendly. We ordered fried pickles, a cheeseburger, Dawn of the Dead, Walking Ched, & T-Virus all with fries. Everything was made to order and delicious. Fries were perfect.... perfect batter, perfect flavor, perfect crunch. It was a little on the pricey side, coming in at over $86 without tip. Overall, it was family friendly and a good experience.

Fun! Friendly! Delicious! We came into town for the Nicotine Dolls/Wic Whitman concert from Minnesota, a few local Ladies we were standing near told us about Zombie Burger so we hung around on Friday to see the sights until they opened. We are so glad we did! The leather Face was to die for. And the Brussel sprouts with the Zombie sauce was AMAZING! We sat outside as it was a beautiful breezy day, then this FREAKY TRUCK PULLED UP! AND A PIG MAN JUMPED OUT WITH A CHAIN SAW!!! How fun! I asked my wait staff if it was just because it was October? They said Nope, they were from the slaughter house where they get their meat from..."Just making their weekly delivery!" Talk about perfect timing to be there! It totally completed our AMAZING girls trip to Des Moines. It was my mother's 78th birthday getaway...one she will NEVER forget! Thank you Nicotine Dolls Wic Whitney and ZOMBIE BURGER!!!!!
Anita S — Google review
I've been here a handful of times over the past few years. The burgers are decent and the milkshakes are always pretty good. My favorite thing to get every time is the Goat Cheese Poppers, though. So good! Especially with the raspberry dipping sauce. Somehow, it just works! I'm not sure when they added the ramen, but my hubs brought it home tonight. It was alright. The broth was a little too bitter and the char sui was cooked weird for being in ramen. It was still decent, but I think I would just stick with the burger after my next year-long hiatus. Love the updates to the inner-space, and the kiosks for ordering take-out. Novelty food, for sure. But if you like jalapeño poppers then definitely try theirs!

Tried Zombie Burger for the first time and had their special K-Pop Ramen Hunters—absolutely delicious! I don’t usually handle spice very well, but the staff was awesome and swapped the spicy broth for pork broth, which I really appreciated. On top of that, their cereal shakes are a must-try—sweet, fun, and just as good as they sound. Definitely a spot worth checking out!
Melissa S — Google review
Sure it’s a little gimmicky but it’s an indulgent treat every once in a while. I got a cinnamon toast crunch shake which it’s exactly as sweet and delicious as you’d expect. I also got the Juan of the dead burger with lettuce (no bun) and the veggie nut patty. I was expecting a lettuce wraps but was pleasantly surprised it was more like a salad. The veggie patty was unique and not your typically black bean burger. The burger was cheese and the sauce was creamy. I appreciate they gave the sauce on the side so it wasn’t soaking wet. It’s a bit pricey but worth it. Parking meters and garage nearby are finicky but not the restaurant’s fault.
MunchNCrunch1 — Google review
Zombie Burger – 4/5 The food was really good, but what truly makes Zombie Burger stand out is the killer theme. The place is packed with clever, zombie-style takes on classic movie posters, and the atmosphere is an absolute vibe — everyone there seemed to be having a great time soaking it all in. I ended up giving it a 4/5, but honestly, that’s only because I think I ordered the wrong burger. I’ll definitely be back to try another one — this place is too fun (and too tasty) not to.

Mediterranean restaurant
Eatery A is a stylish restaurant in Des Moines known for its creative Mediterranean dishes and wood-fired pizzas. The space features reclaimed Iowa wood, adding to the ambiance. The menu includes handmade pastas and cured meats curated by Derek Eidson at Centro, offering specialty dishes and menus during monthly dinners. This place is popular among locals for its happy hour, offering half-price pizza, wine, and beer.
Had an incredible dining experience! 🍝✨ Great food, amazing service, and a cozy ambiance that made the evening perfect. We tried the soup, pasta, and two pizzas — every dish was flavorful and fresh. The happy hour pizza prices were such a great bonus! 🍕🙌 Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for delicious food and warm hospitality.

My husband and I went on a double date to Eatery A tonight, and we all absolutely loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the taste of the food. It was delicious, hot, and tasty. The decor, the different seating options (large booths, small tables, lounge type chairs), and overall vibe was stunning. We've eaten on the patio area in the summertime, and if you have a chance to eat outside, do it! It's worth it. At night, the nightlife of people walking, talking, and having fun surrounds you and adds a little extra entertainment to your dinner. Unfortunately, tonight we were quite disappointed in the service or lack of. It took us over 2 hours in total to get our drinks, apps, and dinner. We had reservations at 6:30 and left a little after 8:45. (Thankfully, we weren't in a hurry, but still). We ordered our apps and dinner at the same time since our server was taking so long just to bring us our drinks out (15+ mins), but it still took over an hour just to get our dinner. By the end of the night, we were the last table left in the restaurant (a few people were left at the bar area), and I had to grab our own to-go boxes from the side area, and located a random waitress and asked her to please help get our ticket or waitress. Our waitress finally walked up with boxes and asked if we were ready for our bill... no apology or acknowledgment that she her taking a bit longer tonight or in general. Our food was GREAT (and surprisingly hot when it arrived), but the service lacked a LOT. Hopefully, it was just one bad night and not an ongoing issue, but I will give them another chance at some point since their pizza's were so good.
Amy E — Google review
Eatery A I used to love this place, and I was so excited to have it since I hadn’t had it in 5 years. But I will say this was such a huge disappointment. Ordered the meat balls and arancini, it came out ICE cold and very old. We decided against any of the entrees due to this reason. But decided to get a pizza, because its pizza and pizza is always good and i used to think theirs was too. The pizza was worse, Caramelized onions does not mean adding sugar for sweetness, and they should say the onions are basically candy sweet on the pizza. It was overly sweetened. Over all, i will not be coming back and this place has gone down hill. Was unable to eat ANY of the foods. I used to love this place 💔 The manager was nice, but still made us pay for the pizza, no worries. I do not recommend this place anymore. Took 10 minutes for out server to even greet us but we were willing to look past that because we were hoping the food would have out weighed the terrible service and the fact the server did not look like she even wanted to be there. It seemed like a bother she was even waiting on our table. Unfortunately that was not the case and the food was terrible.
Kimberly S — Google review
Great Happy Hour especially if you like pizza. Staff were friendly. Service was attentive. The establishment had a cozy vibe and it was extremely clean. The pizza was pretty good, but definitely left me wanting more for the overall experience. Overall this place is a good place to grab a quick bite.

Went to Eatery A with some friends for bottomless mimosas on a Saturday. We were seated immediately and had our own private room! Our server was very friendly and quite attentive. She filled everyone’s glasses so promptly and always made sure that everyone had what they needed. For food, we ordered the Nutella French toast and Lemon Ricotta pancakes. They were OK. My favorite thing at the restaurant was the limeade. It was so refreshing!

A very nice cozy place offering vegetarian food along side their. The staffs are friendly and very helpful. The food was good. Very quick service and their N/A no worries cocktail was amazing, highly recommend it. Their roasted bell pepper and squash soup another amazing dish. Loved this place overall

Warm, industrial, pizzeria meets eatery. The wood fire stove is absolutely the cornerstone of the restaurant. A very easy atmosphere with the intoxicating aroma of outstanding pizza that meets you as soon as you walk in. Today, I order the asparagus soup, with a few small plates to-go. The Moroccan carrots, warm artichoke, and Greek cucumbers.

Southern restaurant (US)
Restaurant
Bubba, a relatively new establishment in Des Moines, has quickly become a local favorite known for its relaxed and stylish setting with a patio. The restaurant offers a unique blend of Southern classics and an extensive selection of whiskies. Its swanky yet cozy atmosphere and magazine-worthy decor make it an instant downtown classic on 10th Street.
Came here for my child's undergrad graduation celebration! She made a great pick! The food was great! Service was awesome. We even had an episode with one of the toilets while there and the manager made sure everything was right! Watch out for that first stall 🤣

We arrived at opening time, for a weekday lunch. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, frog legs for appetizers, & the mac&cheese (a sharable dish, for sure! So rich & filling!!) with shrimp & bacon, & chicken fried steak for our entrees. We shared a peanut butter chocolate pie for dessert. Our waitress was very kind & professional. Our food was well presented & HOT when it arrived at the table. Veggie garnished were fresh & crisp. A delightful meal, celebrating a wonderful day.

In town to visit with family, our last night in town we selected Bubba's. This was the first time for all of us to eat at this restaurant. This restaurant strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. With its upscale aesthetic and warm, down-home atmosphere, it feels both refined and welcoming. The space spans two floors: the first features a cozy mix of bar seating and a handful of tables, while the second floor opens up to the main dining area, complete with long wall booths and a variety of table arrangements that invite relaxed gatherings and intimate meals alike. Our server was wonderful, checking the table often to refill drink orders between the appetizer and main meals. She also was helpful with dish options to match tastebud interests. The food was okay, a bit more seasoning would have made it really good. The exception is the Cajun Chicken & Sausage Gumbo was excellent! The roux was savory and on point - rich, velvety and layered with flavor. And the Mac & Cheese Bite appetizer was cheesy and lightly fried to perfection with jalapeno cheese sauce. A good place to enjoy a relaxing place with good service and food.
N K — Google review
Bubba's is great, we got the gumbo, jambalaya, fries, and bananas foster and sweet tea. Everything was excellent. The gumbo and jambalaya were seasoned perfectly and so flavorful. The fries were also nicely seasoned and were cooked to be crispy on the outside while still being slightly soft inside. The sweet tea was less sweet than lots of other sweet teas we've tried (this is a good thing), as it lets the flavor of the tea come through, while still being sweet enough. The bananas foster was also amazing, our only complaint about it was that it could do with a bit more banana. The restaurant is in a nice old building, and the downstairs seating area really gives off that classic old feeling. Unfortunately upstairs doesn't share the same decor, making the upstairs feel much more like 'generic restaurant', but this doesn't take anything away from the food. The service is also excellent.

Pleasantly uncrowded on a Sunday morning. Josh was super nice. Latte Cocktail was tasty, albeit a tad small. Wife liked her Bloody Mary. I enjoyed the Crab Benedict and the wife liked her skillet plate. Nice bourbon list! Would return to explore more of that menu!

We went to this place to celebrate my daughter wedding. And I'm on a soft food diet do to surgery. And i asked the server if the cook can pureed my food because that how I have to eat for now. And I was so please that they did. And everyone at the table enjoyed there meal.

Came here for my birthday lunch on a Saturday afternoon visiting Des Moines. There wasn't many other tables taken at that time so it was quiet and laid back. I love shrimp and grits. Between that being on the menu and the great reviews, I decided on Bubba's. I really liked the ambiance and vibe upon entering. Our waiter, Jordan, was fantastic. Very attentive, considerate and nice. I wish we had Jordan every time we went out somewhere. The shrimp and grits were fantastic. The onions, green/red peppers really added nice flavor to the dish. It was very filling and tasty. I was offered a free dessert for my birthday and Jordan even brought out a candle, which made it more special. Highly recommend going here!

The Iowa Taproom, located in downtown Des Moines, is a historic and industrial haunt offering over 100 regional craft beers and locally sourced New American fare. The restaurant boasts a beer-hall style setting in a 19th-century building with a unique patio hidden between two buildings, providing the perfect spot to enjoy food from their extensive menu and drinks from their wide selection.
I love craft beer. I've had over 3500 different beers. The Iowa taproom had 120 different beers all from Iowa. Pretty amazing. I had the best seat at the bar and could see all the tap handles. The food was great too and my bartenders were awesome!

You can never fail when heading to the Iowa Taproom, I ordered the chicken tenders while my husband ordered the peanut butter burger - both amazing! Drinks are always good and you can’t go wrong with what you pick. You are able to order a flight of drinks as well!

We went on a Friday night and it was packed! The place is laid out nicely but it is loud. You have to really strain to hear your table. However the prices were great and the food tasted amazing. My wife and I got two different types of tacos, both were yummy. I also tried a flight of beers, which seemed adequately priced. Then I went too far and got the Iowa Pie for dessert. It was amazing too and a very generous portion.

My husband and I were just passing through and needed food! WOW, are we glad we stopped here! Loved, loved the unique menu. It was sooo difficult to make a decision! I had the salmon salad and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich and they were both extremely delicious! We also loved the selection of both beer and cider! THE FOOD and THE STAFF - AMAZING! Don’t pass up a chance to dine and drink at the Iowa Tapeoom!

Great place for any size group. Food is delicious, beer is plenty, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Pricing is modest and affordable.

By far 1 of the BEST beer bars I've been to! The service was spectacular, and so was the food! The honey Sriracha dip for the steak egg rolls was the perfect amount of heat and very well balanced! My salmon salad - fantastic! And those wings were really good also! Beer selection - wow! 120 beers on tap. This place was huge! There are no booths from what I saw from where we were sitting, but they had plenty of seating when we went at 4pm on a Fri afternoon. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu and beers! Samples of beer are free! They have 4 or 5 beer flights you can choose from, or build your own. Starting price is $14. If you're not into beer or cider, there's also liquors for mixed drinks.

Great food! The space itself is kinda small. Music next door was so loud we could hardly hear each other. The place itself is really cool. Love the look of the place. Huge bar in main area. Staff was friendly and accommodating for us.

Simons is a beloved bistro and bar in Des Moines, offering a mix of American and Italian classics. The restaurant is known for its consistent dining experience and cozy atmosphere, making it a popular choice for date nights or casual gatherings with friends. Despite potential long waits, customers are willing to line up for the chance to savor dishes like stuffed chicken, shrimp scampi, and Steak de Burgo.
We had an amazing time dining at Simon’s. Simon himself was personable and he takes time to get to know his guests. He greets every table and makes you not feel like a number! Simon even took the time to go over recommendations for other local places while we were in town. A+++++ service! The restaurant was packed at 5, luckily we got in line at 4:30. Our server was attentive. We started off with the baked feta, which was delicious. Our second course was a house salad with homemade dressing, yummy. For our entrees I got the New York Strip and my husband got Steak DeBurgo. Both were cooked to perfection. To finish the meal we had house made red velvet cake which was made by Simon’s father. Everything was perfect! We will be back!

I enjoyed Simon's. Owner treats everyone like family. Quaint place with a sitting room next door to wait for a table. Drinks are reasonable and bartender is attentive and quick. Onion rings were amazing! Had Graziano sausage with vodka sauce. Spicy and delicious. Wife had chicken Alfredo. She was not a fan but I know it is a go to for my future daughter n law. Red cake after appeased wife.

Whether one is a James Beard nominee or a Michelin Star nominee my quest is for well prepared cuisine, inclusivity and consistent quality. Arrived at 5.15 PM to a small neighborhood building with a line. Getting to the door the wait staffer states seating would be available at 8 PM. Not really anxious to wait three and a half hours for a small spot with crowded spaces — I was willing to give it a try. After an additional fifteen minutes — finally seated. Ordered my first appetizer of the night — Seafood Bisque which was very salty — Entree of Steak DeBurgo— the cook got the temp right (medium), but the cut of meat was not the best quality — the side veggies were fresh and very tasty. I was really hoping the high ratings matched the food preparation and price as it related to creativity, presentation and tantalizing deliciousness — it did not deliver the go again response to my tastebuds to endure the long wait time, parking and above average prices. Of course this is just my opinion-particularly after eating in some high caliber casual dining spots, in the West Des Moines Area, the bar is pretty high.
MaryAnn S — Google review
This was our first time visiting Simon’s and it was fantastic. We had their Beef Stroganoff and their Steak Deburgo. Both were excellent. The Beef Stroganoff had a variety of noodles (penne, spiral, and sea shell) and the sauce was magnificent. The Steak Deburgo was recommended to us by another guest and I’m so happy that I tried it. The steak was so tender that it cut like soft butter. You can’t go wrong but come early to get a table. The restaurant opens at 5 PM. We arrived at 4:45 PM and there was already a line to get in and we were lucky enough to be the last guests in as they were full. We highly recommend this place as the staff is friendly.
Monte J — Google review
If you want to take your girl for a special date night, this is it! Me and my girlfriend went to Simon’s last night. The place is so good that there was an hour wait. But Simon has a really cool waiting room next to the restaurant with a bar. We sipped cocktails and enjoyed the hip vibe in the waiting room. It went by fast. I got pasta with graziano’s sausage and she got chicken on a bed of pasta. We shared and both of them were good. 😋 Simon is a hands on owner. He came over to our table and asked how the meal was. Also, it is a really nice place, and the business is obviously very successful. As we were walking to our car, we saw Simon taking out the trash himself. He is a humble success story. I encourage everyone to try this place.

Went to Simon's for the first time. We had no idea what to expect. What an amazing dining experience! Simon greeted us at the door, and came to our table twice. The food was delicious. We had the fillet and the manicotti and what a surprise with the velvet cake being brought to us at the end of the meal. We will definitely be going back!

Excellent from the moment we walked in! Simon was everywhere making sure that guest was happy! How could you not be while eating the best food in town!

Absolutely love this place. The owner and his wife are professional and helpful, and yet make you feel like a family member. Fantastic, fresh tasting food with great flavor, and make sure you save room for red velvet cake, because it’s the best I’ve had. The bar provides a classy, fun atmosphere while you wait. Step into The High Life Lounge, a quirky tribute to 1960s Midwestern beer halls serving up classic comfort food. This retro spot offers a nostalgic ambiance with decor reminiscent of the golden era. Indulge in their signature broasted chicken and unique bites like bacon-wrapped tater tots topped with cheese. Pair your meal with the iconic Miller beer for an authentic experience.
10/10 no notes Great food, great prices, great service and perfect ambiance. Cheeseburger? Solid. Meatloaf? Solid. Sandwiches? Solid. Loved it, has the best Midwest dive bar vibe that I’ve found in Des Moines and could see myself becoming a regular here.

Great tasting and affordable food in a friendly and inviting environment. Our appetites were satisfied. If you’re in the area, would highly recommend this place for your family to grab a bite to eat. There is both indoor and outdoor seating.
Prized T — Google review
I had to make this stop—liver and onions are one of my all-time favorites. The bonus? This place has a nostalgic, old-school ’60s Miller-themed bar vibe that’s just plain cool. I was greeted right away and grabbed a booth, perfect for people-watching while I decided on my order. I asked my waitress for heavy onions (the more the better), plus a side salad and broccoli. Let me tell you—they did not skimp on those onions, as you can see in the photo. The liver and onions were fantastic—so good that I’m planning to come back again before I leave this weekend. I even tipped the cook an extra $10 just for being generous with the onions. This is the kind of spot you’ve got to check out, not just for the food, but for the experience.

This place reminded me of the bars in Wisconsin growing up. The only thing that was missing was soming stuffed on the walls. Service was very friendly and food came out fast. Had the deviled eggs and poutine. Every part of it was delicious. If I'm back in the area, I'll be going back here for something again.

I was here 15+years ago and still has the same vibe (minus the shag carpet). I don’t recall eating here back then but had the bacon cheese burger and fries and it did not disappoint. Friendly staff to a out of towner.
David T — Google review
Walking into High Life Lounge feels like stepping back a few decades in the best possible way. Wood-paneled walls, vintage beer signs, and that cozy “neighborhood bar” charm make the atmosphere a solid 5/5. Service was excellent. My waitress, Mercedes R., was on point the whole time — friendly, quick, and kept things smooth. She had that perfect mix of charm and elegance, the kind of presence that shows just enough to keep it classy and plenty to keep it memorable. Easy 5/5 there. For food, I started with the Chili Cheese Fries appetizer. They came out hot and hearty, loaded with cheese and chili over crinkle fries. They were tasty, no doubt, but the chili had that familiar mom-and-pop diner style. Good comfort food, but nothing that set it apart — I’d rate them around 3.5/5. The Chicken Pot Pie was my main course. It arrived covered in a pool of brown gravy, which was flavorful but not as rich as I hoped. I’d been looking forward to cracking into a crisp, golden crust, only to find it softened under the gravy. The crust itself was thick and layered, the chicken came in cubes (hard to say if it was fresh-made or not), and the veggies were just shy of fully cooked — not mushy, but with a good bite. In the end, it was filling and hearty, but the presentation and flavor didn’t quite deliver the wow factor. 3.5/5. The bar deserves some credit — plenty of beers on tap, kept cold and flowing. A nice spread without overcomplicating it. That’s a 4/5. What really made the place feel like home, though, was a nearby table of old friends swapping stories from the 70s. Those old goats set the bar high for an up-and-coming Billy goat like me, and it added a sense of warmth and nostalgia that money can’t buy. Final bill was $26.19 with tip, which felt fair for drinks, an appetizer, and a main course. Bottom line: Come here for the retro atmosphere, cold beer, and excellent service. The food hits the classic comfort note, but it’s the vibe — and people like Mercedes — that make the High Life Lounge worth the stop.
Steve — Google review
Couldn’t get much better! The broasted chicken is the best in the area. Tenderloin was awesome too. The old dive bar feel was something we love. The server was the best part!

Terrible service!!!! Enjoying time with adult friends at 4pm, laughing, and and drinking. The bartender looks like a tweeter himself. Was super disrespectful and short. Complaining of people being loud when it wasn’t. They were rude and disrespectful and dismissed. We left and didn’t continue business because of the unwelcoming atmosphere.

Smitty's Tenderloin Shop is a classic American eatery that has been dishing out delicious breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches since 1952. The family-owned joint, founded by Bill Smith, lovingly prepares its tenderloins and onion rings from scratch every morning. The menu features the king and queen sandwich sizes, which are generously portioned and perfect for sharing. In addition to the traditional tenderloin, they also offer specialty options like the veggie loin and taco loin.
It's worth stopping by... I have no idea what a tenderloin sandwich is, but it was good. The onion rings are fresh and homemade. The chocolate malt was awesome. The building is a little deceiving - it is out of the 50's but cool in a history kind of way. The highlight of the visit is the staff... Mindy and Wendy were awesome - great service, super nice, friendly, and a lot of fun. The atmosphere in this place is great

I’ve been going to Smittys for 50 years. Are there better tenderloins in Des Moines? Of course there are. But this one is all about the experience. Smittys is a classic !!!
Thomas S — Google review
We stopped here while during a trip to Des Moines very recently. We heard they were rated Iowa’s number one tenderloins and had delicious onion rings. So we stopped and we ordered tenderloins and onion rings and my other sister ordered a burger. There were four of us. The tenderloins were very flavorless and we also got onion rings, which were also flavorless. We didn’t understand why everything had no flavor.. Dry very dull very boring. The iced tea was fresh and good and the funnel cake fries were good. I would not stop here again. Also, my sister said the burger wasn’t good. She couldn’t even finish it. We did not finish our tenderloins or our onion rings. We stopped later to get something else to eat.

Our first time eating here. We ordered a breaded tenderloin, vegetable tenderloin, jalapeño munchers, breaded mushrooms, and chicken nuggets. For drinks we had a root beer, strawberry shake, and vanilla shake. The food and drinks were good. The service was excellent. All of the employees were very friendly. This is a smaller restaurant so there are not a lot of seats for dine-in.

Thanks for the laughs and the best tasting chilly cheese loin and Onion rings!! Till next time!!
Dirtyhandscleanmoney — Google review
One star for the fact that the white cheese curds were good, not great just good. The tenderloin was big, too thin for my taste, with zero seasoning. The breading was probably the worst thing about it though, it was the consistency of corn meal, soggy, and pasty. Overall id say a very bad tenderloin.

Smitty's has been around since 1952 it's. Just went through several Generations. Still owned by the same people. Their king and queen tenderloins are as good as ever. Just not enough room inside to seats everyone

Love places like this! To us, this is a "hole in the wall" type place. Good food! We had the brisket sandwich with parmesan fries and the AG burger with parmesan fries. Both were delicious! If you don't like spicy, order the burger with sauce on the side. Give it a try, but then you can control how much goes on the burger. Be aware, right know they have a sign that police will ticket anyone parked on Davis St. There is overflow parking across 9th from the restaurant.

Love the name and the fish and chips were very tasty. Perfectly crispy and not greasy at all. Parmigiano coated fries and an excellent pasta salad. Only downside for us was the loud music, we realize it's a bar and everyone was having a great time so no real complaint just a matter of taste. Wait staff was very friendly and answered all our questions about the restaurant. Sounds like they accommodate fish Fridays during lent which is wonderful. If we are in the area again we would definitely would eat here again.

We stopped here after the Iowa State Fair. The food was excellent and the portions were a great value. Comfort food at its finest. Plus, the environment is cozy and the banter with the bartender was much appreciated - he provided great service. I'm bummed I don't live closer to this place, because I'd be here frequently.

Just amazing with an awesome waiter. Boursin Burger is my favorite with tator tots and my cousin ate the Southside Famous Bowl which is similar to the KFC bowl but way better and homemade. We had the bottle of sangria for brunch it was amazing and only $12 for 4-5 glasses of wine. Definitely one of my favorite spots in DSM I've only been twice but it was worth it every time. We also had the breakfast shots delicious!
Kimberly G — Google review
Fish and chips were good, fish was fresh, it’s the best of the whole meal. Poutine was a whole bowl of leftover foods. Soggy fries soaked in watery gravy. The leftover ‘brisket’ that was supposed to be in the garbage bin is in the bowl as a main ingredient of the dish. And a pile of casually tossed cheese on top was a triple kill of the dish. A total disaster. And the Mac cheese was more like a bowl of cheese sauce, and it was sweet. How could Mac cheese be sweet? It’s been so gross with so much highly processed American cheese, Pretzel bread dipped in sauce was just fine. And what’s even worse, it was a little cool when it was served. Salad was ok.
Yan C — Google review
I do carry out here as it's kind of close to home. I really need to try other dishes they serve. What I will say is they have a tenderloin sandwich that is the BOMB!! Way better than a competitor's place that's just up the street from me! This tenderloin is meaty, crispy, and overall, just plain delicious!! Fries are very good as well! I should maybe stop in and speak with the owner about trying my Hot Spice on one!

Harbinger, located in the Ingersoll neighborhood, offers a unique dining experience with its focus on Southeast Asian flavors and vegetable-based small plates. The menu features dishes like steamed buns, shiitake mushroom tempura, kale and popped groats tarts, and Hakurei turnips with local chevre.
We’re been here as a date night at least 6 times and easily our #1 spot in central Iowa for a cozy romantic place to retreat for a culinary meal. Portions are perfect and their tenured staff knows the menu well. The bar offers some exceptional talent and craft cocktails and also a nice selection of not old world wines. Not better place in DSM to celebrate a special night or even a “just because” treat at the end of a hard week

Harbinger was an amazing experience. The staff was friendly and attentive. I never felt silly for asking any questions. The food was fantastic. We got the chef's tasting with wine pairing and it was absolutely worth the price. Reservations recommended, and expect to spend time here enjoying your party's company.

Incredible food, marvelous service. Each bite of food felt like a separate experience, and I savored all of it. They were also more than accommodating of my dietary preferences and were very thoughtful. We went for happy hour, and the $8 dishes were honestly my favorites of the entire menu (the bao buns and shokupan). The chef’s tasting was decadent. 10/10 recommend.

The tasting menu here is a phenomenal expression of midwestern farm to table delight! The love the veggies get always impresses me. But the spiritual experience of the meal? The blue cheese cheese cake. Other worldly. Stop what you’re doing and go order it.

We made a reservation for dinner while passing through Des Moines on a road trip. We were promptly greeted and seated at our table. My wife was given a menu with vegetarian options highlighted, a nice touch! Jannea provided superb service and explanation of the menu. We each ordered cocktails off the menu which were excellent! I had the tasting menu, see photo of courses, which was an experience I will never forget. Beautifully plated, well timed and delicious! The Vietnamese Tiramisu left me speechless! We made a point to go back to Harbinger during on the return of our road trip and took advantage of their happy hour menu. We were promptly seated during this visit as well. Kudos to the Chefs, Bartender, and Service Staff, especially Jannea for giving us a night to remember!

This was such an amazing meal! You could really tell how much thought went into each dish. The Island Creek Oysters with miso butter and chicken skin xo were some of the best oysters i’ve ever had. The steamed buns were addicting, especially the chicken and rhubarb one, i would have ordered more if i wasn’t already so full! The vegetable broth in the spring green dumpling dish was perfection. I also can’t stop thinking about the english pea lumache pasta dish. And both desserts were absolutely incredible. Who knew yuzu and blue cheese could work so well together? The service was great as well, our server was very nice and fun. I’m so glad i came here and would definitely come back while in town!

Every meal here has been incredible. The restaurant week menu is always a surprise and incredibly fun. I had their normal tasting menu last night with the wine pairing and what a phenomenal meal (though I wonder if one dish didn't have a pairing? It wasn't clear and I didn't get a glass for it but it was fine). Cozy environment with small quirky bathrooms that makes the place feel more homey in a way. Reservations recommended.

What a treat! The 7 course chefs selection was a hit with our family last night. Adding our favorites (those steamed buns!) made it fabulous! The blue cheese dessert sounded odd and incorporated savory, sweet and tart! Loved it! (Pictured) I love this experience each time we visit. Thank you! Your passion for food, service and hospitality is evident. Wagyu beef, Tuna, Chicken, the first ever Salad on the menu and Flourless Choc Cake were some of our favorites.

GREAT food! I always get the special on Thursday, which is a grinder. Austin is a long time employee who knows exactly how I want the sandwich and will often start to make it before I even get to the register to order. I love the atmosphere – it’s not fancy, and it’s just the way I like it.

As close to a real NY deli as you can anywhere here in the Midwest. Have been going here for many many years and never once had bad sandwich. It's kind of small for seating but that is one of its best characteristics. Keep it up!!!

Vintage interior with large selection of fresh made sandwiches! I got the #1 and wish it had more mayo and tanginess of the dressing; otherwise it was tasty! My partner got the Manhattan corned beef and ham, coleslaw on an onion roll.

Some of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had. The Manhattan was only $9.99 and it was nice, warm and cheesey. The service was great - super friendly, informative and fast. Plenty of places to sit as well. This is the place to go for deli sandwiches in Des Moines. Just make sure that you read the menu closely and know exactly what you're ordering. Highly recommend!

Fantastic sandwiches and the brownie was yummy too. Loved our experience and impressed with the quality. Stacked mile high sandwiches that tastes delicious. Honestly prefer Palmers reuben but the pastrami and Swiss here is amazing. The service was good. No complaints about cleanliness or speed of service. Great job!

I ordered a turkey sandwich for lunch and did not have a good experience. The lettuce was wilted and the bread was very soggy. I only took a few bites before I had to throw it out due to the soggy texture. I would not recommend their regular sandwiches, maybe the hoagies taste better. The food was fantastic and the service was personable and attentive. Struggled to pick just a few items for dinner, and want to come back to try it ALL! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! Great mixes of cheeses, fresh greens, etc. The Cuban had a kind of sweet pickle that I don't normally like, but was a perfect compliment with the ham, mustard and cheese - all encased in absolutely crunchy grilled bread. Best Cuban I've had since a Cuban restaurant in SoCal 30 years ago. We were too full for dessert - but then they mentioned the seasonal lemon curd tart creme brulee and we had to try it. It was all soooo good!

We also chose to eat outside and the outside are awas 100% dog friendly and we noticed the dogs getting a little treat while their owners ate.

Food looked great but seasoning was a bit lacking. A bit overpriced. The fig jam was quite tasty though. Service was a bit slow with us having to wait, then getting up to the counter for their attention as they seemed to have forgotten us to take our order. They were friendly enough. Atmosphere was nice with themed decor. Outdoor seating was available. Maybe worth a try but not highly recommended.

Their burger was tasty and cooked perfectly to order. The Mac & cheese was full of flavor. Prices were good. Their portions were good. Staff were friendly and fast. The relaxing atmosphere just brought the whole experience together for a great meal.

Service was excellent. Our waiter went out of his way to make our experience memorable. Food and drink was excellent. Atmosphere was impeccable, excellent vibes. Will be returning when in town next.

They have some of the best grilled cheese and Mac and cheese you have ever had. Not to mention the variety of drinks on tap. Staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is so laid back. We absolutely love going here.

I've been meaning to come here for a couple years. Unfortunately, I didn't get to sit down to eat as I was just grabbing a salad for my wife visiting her father in the hospital. And what a salad it was! My wife wouldn't give me any till she was full. Pretty much half the salad. But if their salad is any indication of the quality of the rest of their menu, we'll be back soon. Plus what a great selection of drinks. This is a must go to

Love to come here with my partner! Staff are always lovely and helpful, and we haven't had a meal we haven't enjoyed in the many times we've visited! (Highly recommend the charcuterie boards and the turkey & brie sandwich)

Nestled along Ingersoll Avenue, Lachele's Fine Foods is a vibrant café that radiates a hip and quirky atmosphere. Known for its mouthwatering burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches, this spot also caters to vegan diners with delicious options. The interior boasts a retro diner vibe filled with unique decor like the sticker pillar by the entrance. While many flock to the takeout window for quick bites, the inviting ambiance encourages guests to linger and enjoy their meals inside.
The food was delicious plus the staff and atmosphere are top tier! It’s a popular spot, so it does get busy during dinner hours, but the staff does a great job keeping things moving smoothly and making sure everyone is taken care of.
Tinesha G — Google review
Just tried Lachele’s for the first time and it was a decent place. We sat down and were told to move so another group could sit down. Which was rude. I had already paid for my food and I tipped. The burger was decent. Only thing I wished was that they didn’t put ketchup and mustard on the top and bottom bun. It makes it super soggy and gross. I wish they used short rib. The patty was dry but overall decent little spot. I would absolutely go again, just would ask for only ketchup and mustard on one side of the bun and light. The mac and cheese was too creamy for me (cheese was more sticky than i like). Tater tots were food, and fries were good too!
Kimberly S — Google review
We used Lachele's as one of our food truck vendors for our rehearsal dinner at Jasper Winery. They were very kind, professional, and their service was fantastic. They even through in snow cones when we asked about a dessert option! We received compliments from multiple guests about how great the food was. We will 100% wanting to use them in the future.

Legit smash burger. I can’t say id call myself a smash burger person, but this place has me questioning. Really tasty burger, lot of fixins, and a ton of good flavor. Loved the crispy edge on this. The tots were great too. My only complaint was that it was sort of hard to eat, with lots of the burger being without bun at the end. Maybe it’s the intended effect? Either way, 5/5.

This is my second time coming to Lachele’s and, YUM! First I tried their Philly; although it looks small, it’s incredibly filling and the bread is amazing! Today I had their cheeseburger. The burger was FANTASTIC. I will say the house sauce is a little mustard-y (not that that’s a bad thing!). Also the fries are beautifully seasoned. 10/10.

We had a wonderful brunch on this past Sunday afternoon. We had been wanting to try this new East Side location since they opened across from Chuck's. Everything about our meal was very positive. We were greeted with enthusiasm and our server, Echo was a breath of fresh air. My wife had the small pot pie and " one friggin pancake" (vanilla bean). The pot pie was a cup of pot pie soup with croutons and the pancake was plate sized. Both were delicous. I had the Uncle Denny smashburger wlth the pepper jelly, 2 fried eggs and breakfest fries. Ate it all in an instant. Our plates were clean when we left. We'll be back (soon) and I'd say it's definitely worth the drive. $25 for brunch and worth every penny.
Jerry F — Google review
Hands down the best burger I’ve ever had—and I’ve had a lot of burgers in my life. The Lachele burger and tots with a side of cheese is perfection every single time. I’d go every week if I could. Highly recommend!
Bob S — Google review
Lachele’s Fine Foods is the place to be. This spot has a true local feel—no frills, just ridiculously good food and warm, friendly vibes. Their smash burgers are on another level: perfectly seared, juicy, and packed with flavor thanks to their high-quality meat. You can tell they care about what they’re serving. Every time I visit, the staff is genuinely welcoming, which just adds to the charm. It’s the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem, but once you’ve been, you’ll keep coming back. If you’re serious about burgers, Lachele’s is a must-visit

The bar and grill Kelly's Little Nipper is a popular spot in the town for appetizers, sandwiches and pizzas. The food is good and the service is friendly. It's just not what someone was looking for at the time, so they might deduct a little stars from the rating.
Elsie made fun of my buddy, told me my drink was boring and said I ruined the sandwich because I ordered it without onions. She’s the BEST. Fun and hard working staff. Amazing food. Hidden gem. Try the corn. Get the brisket tacos 🌮.

Stopped at Kelly's Little Nipper for St. Patty day. Atmosphere was festive with an Irish band. Beautiful day so we ate on the patio. Bacon wrapped tater tots, cheese balls, onion rings, burgers, shrimp with a salad and a BLT. Also had to try the custom mini beers!! Good food and great time as always.
Diane W — Google review
No frills, but a good time. We sat outside for lunch and enjoyed the Saturday bloody special ($3.50!!!). Split the chicken strips and a half order of onion rings, and both were solid. The rings definitely seemed like they were made in house and the patio underneath the shade of the giant tree made a really pleasant afternoon. Staff were super friendly and attentive, and I’d love to come back some time for their weekday happy hour. Also, bonus brownie bites for dessert? Yes please!
Audrey K — Google review
Birthday brunch at Kelly’s Little Nipper! We’ve been meaning to check this place out for a while, and I finally made it one of my birthday wishes—and I’m glad we did. We grabbed seats at the bar (because of course we did), and were lucky to be served by the owner’s daughter, who was also training a new hire. Even after a late night, she didn’t miss a beat—friendly, efficient, and totally on top of things. Absolute rock star. The vibe here is eclectic and full of character—definitely a bit old and quirky, but clean and packed with personality. You can tell this place has seen its share of good times. Heads up: the floors are decidedly not level, so tread carefully! We kicked things off with some solid Bloody Marys—simple but done right. (Yes, I added a beer back. No regrets.) Kim ordered the Kelly’s Steak Sandwich ($16)—loaded, fresh, and delicious. I went for the brisket tacos ($15) with a side of onion rings (+$2). The tacos had great flavor thanks to the tender brisket, but they were a little heavy on the sauce for my taste. Still a solid pick. Being Sunday, we were treated to a free order of Kelly’s Corn ($6 value), with explicit instructions not to eat it too early and to try it with the house bread. We followed directions—and yes, it was delicious. The cook was super friendly, working hard in a very tiny kitchen, and even popped out to check on us a couple times. You don’t always see that level of attention. By the time we left, the place had really filled up—clearly a neighborhood favorite. We’ll absolutely be back. Pro tip: Check their website or social pages for live music nights. The outdoor venue looks awesome, and we were kicking ourselves a little for not planning around that. One small note to the owner: There were quite a few flies around the dining area—not terrible, but noticeable. They mostly kept to themselves, but still a bit off-putting indoors.

Ordered the Brisket Tacos, onion rings, and the guinea grinder. The food was delicious! The atmosphere was chill. We will definitely be back again!
Amanda S — Google review
Didn't expect it to be a bar atmosphere. Thought is was going to be a more traditional restaurant but all good. Not a lot of tables. Friends liked the pork tenderloin sandwich which is why we went there. I had the Grinder sandwich and it was not good. Too much bread and not much meat and nothing exciting. What was great was the corn and the onion rings and cheese curds. Also the pizza rocked. They have free small bites of pizza for happy hour from 4 pm to 6 pm Monday thru Friday. I wish I would have ordered a pizza. Serve staff was also the bartender so had to go ask for a couple of things I needed but it was ok. Staff were super nice and friendly.
Ann C — Google review
I'd like to give this place more of a 3.75. I went with a friend who was on a quest for the perfect tenderloin. It had to be thick & have a perfectly proportioned amount of breading to meat. She ordered the tenderloin with onion rings. We were sitting outside and there was a divine smell of smoked pork. There weren't any smoked pork items on the menu. I asked about it and the waitress told me she had completely forgotten they had cooked pork as well as brisket and there were pulled pork sandwiches. I had been looking at their loaded nachos that could be ordered with brisket and asked if they could be served with pork. I ate so many smokey nachos in Memphis that just the memory makes me happy. The waitress agreed to make my nachos with pork and brought our food out. Everything was as ordered but I should have asked more about the nachos. Apparently, according to my dining companion, nachos are normally served with this gooey nacho cheese sauce. It was a shock to me. I remember my southern nachos where the chips were laid out in a thin layer and sprinkled with a blend of smoked cheeses then popped into a broiler to melt. Hunks of pulled pork were added on and BBQ sauce and any traditional toppings you wanted came on the side. The nachos I received were a far cry from that. The pulled pork that was on them was good but had a bit too much sweet sauce or rub. Again though, this was my fault for not asking questions. My friend said her tenderloin was appropriately thick and good but it lacked flavor in the meat and the texture of the breading was too consistent. She grew up in southeastern Iowa and the sandwiches she ate were from pork sourced from local farmers so the meat had more flavor. They were hand breaded with bread crumbs and crushed saltiness. Good luck finding that these days unless you can find a small restaurant in the country. She thought her onion rings were just okay but I thought they were great. I like thin batter and real slices of onions and these definitely fit the bill. The service was good and the waitress was very nice. When you walk in though, it is definitely a bar first & foremost. When we walked in at lunch time, you would be hard pressed to guess the time from the dim interior. We sat outside though on a small but cute patio so the interior was irrelevant.

If you're on the hunt for a BBQ experience that truly embodies the phrase "go big or go home," look no further than Jethro's BBQ. With six locations across the metro area, this beloved eatery is renowned for its generous portion sizes and an impressive selection of 15 housemade sauces to accompany their hardwood smoked, flash-fried wings. These wings have even earned accolades as the best in the state from Inside Edition!
Wonderful food establishment. It filled our appetites. The food is yummy. Highly recommended! Thanks Clarice for the exceptional service!

I ordered the bbq platter with bbq ribs and boneless wings, mashed potatoes with Texas toast and the ribs were very very dry and tasteless, the chicken wings tasted like mop water, mashed potatoes were lumpy with no flavor, none of the food had flavor. The toast had no butter on it and tasted stale.i was very disappointed! Waitress was great though!!! She was kind and polite!

Went for dinner tonight. We sat downstairs for 15 mi s without being acknowledged. We didn't necessarily mind because we couldn't decide what we wanted so it gave us time to look. It was extremely loud so we asked to be moved upstairs. Once upstairs the waitress was extremely nice. Three food was ok. My son's sandwich was good. Mine had to be sent back unfortunately.

Visited with a group (12 people). Wait was short. The waitress had a great personality and was upbeat. The food came out hot and was great. Kid menu had perfect options for all the kids in the group. Service was quick given the group size, and all orders came out correct.

Food was really good but the portions were small, especially the sides. We (2 people) ordered the family meal (1/2 rack ribs, 2 meats 4 sides, 2 Texas toast, 1 corn muffin). We finished everything on the platter which we've never been able to do at other bbq locations. The sides were about 2 spoonfuls each. Service was great and friendly. Everything was good other than the portion size. Most bbq places pile it high, with plenty to take home. Would definitely go back to try other things.
Charity M — Google review
The only complaint was my half slab of ribs was room temperature. I've been to so many BBQ joints that do that. I do understand it's to not dry out the meats but can it at least be served warm? It was excellent, I would definitely come back I just would like my food served hot

Food was amazing! We were served by Danielle who was absolutely delightful. We were told it would be a 15 minute wait (which was fine, they have nice seats to wait at) but we’re seated in probably 5. Our food was all delicious and was out probably 15 minutes after we ordered despite it being a packed house. Highly recommend checking it out!
Tanner R — Google review
I had the wing combo with half mustard sauce and half BBQ rub, and the food was genuinely delicious. I also enjoyed a golden lager beer topped with an orange. Fortunately, it wasn’t too busy when we arrived, and about 15 minutes later, we received our food. While the food was amazing, the service was disappointing. We were served by the bartender, despite sitting at a table with servers actively working. We didn’t receive any drink refills and were promised to-go boxes that never arrived. The most unfortunate part of our experience involved the bartender. I was with a friend and stepped outside briefly to smoke, out of respect for the children present downstairs. When I returned, our table had been cleared, and the check was presented. The bartender claimed he had tossed our food because he was told to, but neither my friend nor I gave such instructions. In fact, we were waiting for the to-go boxes. My friend assumed the plates were being taken to be packed up. Additionally, my half-finished golden lager was discarded without my consent. My complaint mainly concerns the poor service. There’s a saying in bar culture: “Don’t take a bottle from a baby,” implying that a half-finished drink is still in use. Unfortunately, the bartender today didn’t seem to understand this. I usually tip generously—20% or more—but due to the lack of service, I left only a 5% tip on a $33 order.

Completely random stop while out running errands.. walked in and super busy! Sat right down, food and drink within like 10 minutes.. AMAZING wings!! Maxie's Supper Club is a charming gem nestled in West Des Moines, Iowa, that captures the essence of retro dining with its inviting atmosphere and classic menu. Established in 1967, this neighborhood favorite has remained true to its roots while offering an array of delicious options like jumbo hamburgers, onion rings, and succulent steaks. The family-friendly vibe makes it perfect for gatherings—like a recent lunch where a large group was expertly managed by the attentive staff.
I love the old-school supper club vibe! The staff is so welcoming and eager to make your visit spectacular! Everything was wonderful! From the perfectly-breaded cheese curds, and my husband's juicy burger, to my tender and flavorful prime rib special! The prices are great considering the quality of the food and portions. Everything was perfect for our first time! Can't wait to go back!
Melinda — Google review
In the tranquil West Des Moines suburbs on Grand Ave, a once great restaurant has returned to its former glory, and dare I say, it's even better than before. Maxie's Supper Club is a delightful testament to culinary excellence, offering a refined and elegant dining experience that sets it apart from the crowd. To begin our culinary journey, I savored a side salad with creamy parmesan dressing, a perfect prelude to the exquisite meal that awaited. The freshness of the greens was a testament to Maxie's commitment to quality, but it was the house-made creamy parmesan dressing that truly shone. Its rich and velvety texture, with hints of nutty parmesan, elevated the salad to a level of sophistication that instantly set the tone for the evening. The stuffed mushrooms appetizer that followed was a revelation. A harmonious blend of caramelized onions, herbed Boursin cheese, and melted mozzarella, it arrived at the table with an intoxicating aroma that left no doubt about the exploration of taste we were embarking on. The caramelized onions added a subtle sweetness that beautifully balanced the richness of the cheese, while the mozzarella provided a luscious, melty finish. Each bite was a symphony of flavors and textures, leaving us eagerly anticipating the main course. The pièce de résistance, the medium-rare prime rib dinner, was a carnivore's dream come true. Cooked to perfection, each slice of prime rib was tender and succulent, a testament to the chef's expertise. Served alongside a baked potato and asparagus, the dish was a well-rounded symphony of flavors. The baked potato, adorned with butter, offered a comforting complement to the rich meat, while the asparagus added a refreshing touch. The creamy horseradish sauce, with its zesty kick, enhanced the prime rib's flavor profile, elevating the dish to an unforgettable crescendo of taste. Continuing our culinary odyssey, the baked 8oz Canadian salmon arrived, bathed in citrus herb compound butter. Served with asparagus and mashed potatoes, it was reminiscent of the comfort food Grandma used to make. The salmon was a testament to Maxie's dedication to quality seafood, perfectly flaky and infused with the bright citrus herb compound butter. The asparagus retained its crispness, and the mashed potatoes were a nostalgic delight, reminiscent of a cherished family recipe. For dessert, we indulged in the coconut cake, a moist white confection adorned with buttercream icing and topped with fresh coconut flakes. The cake's delicate crumb and the luscious icing harmonized beautifully, while the coconut flakes provided a delightful contrast in texture and flavor. Finally, the turtle cheesecake concluded our evening on a high note. This rich and creamy cheesecake, with its caramel and chocolate butter glaze, was a decadent treat for the senses. The interplay of sweet caramel and velvety chocolate enveloped the palate, leaving a lingering, indulgent memory. Throughout our meal, the service at Maxie's Supper Club was exemplary, marked by attentiveness and efficiency that added to the overall dining pleasure. The quiet and comfortable environment allowed for intimate conversation and an unhurried, enjoyable dining experience. In conclusion, Maxie's Supper Club has indeed returned to its former glory and then some. This establishment offers an experience that transcends the ordinary, celebrating the art of gastronomy with finesse and flair. From the meticulous attention to detail in each dish to the exemplary service and serene ambiance, Maxie's Supper Club is a culinary gem worth savoring. It's a testament to the enduring allure of classic dining, reinvented for today's discerning palate.

As you start to make plans for Valentines, anniversary’s, or just a random date night I beg you to keep Maxie’s in mind. Let’s first talk about the food: this restaurant knows what it is about. The menu is not full of puns nor does it focus on trendy ingredients; while it can be fun to try fluffy stuff at other restaurants you can easily be met with dissatisfaction. Every single thing that was served to us at Maxie’s was perfected and I do not think that they’d put anything on the menu that didn’t meet this standard. We could have eaten the onion rings without any ranch or ketchup, they were just that good. I had the steak salad with the shallot vinaigrette and while I can not say in good faith that it was a healthy choice, it was the best salad that I’ve had in a while. Logan had the chicken wings which may be one of the greatest deals in town. The size of wings easily made it worth the cost, and the chicken was perfectly cooked, almost broasted? The dining space has an unassuming and comfortable ambience; with a dim interior, the flickering candles create a sense of warmth. We felt comfortable in our jeans and sweatshirts, but you can dress it up too. The management clearly sets high expectations for the staff. Service is fast but not overbearing, and no table sat dirty after it was left. It is a tightly run ship of a restaurant. Now I’m not going to sit here and say that this is the fanciest restaurant in town, but I will say that the food meets the mark, the service is excellent, and the environment can be romantic. If you visit you know that you’ll be getting a quality experience.

My sons and I went to Maxie's for my birthday. We had heard many good things. I was especially excited to try their rarebit. I had been cautioned that management/ownership had changed but they had promised to keep things as they had always been. It was moderately busy when we arrived. We were seated immediately & our server was prompt and very friendly. We started with the cheese curds. We agreed these were, hands down, the best cheese curds we'd ever had. They were very lightly breaded not over greasy. Served with ranch & what we detected to be Graziano's Mariano Sauce. For our meal, I had the rarebit. Both of my sons ordered the chicken marsala. It was a pretty long wait for the food all things considered. The rarebit was very disappointing. It was a burger with plan melted cheese. Not a flavored rarebit sauce like you expect. Just a very bland melted cheese. Nothing special certainly not for $17.95. The chicken marsala was equally unimpressive. Noodles with chicken pieces and a couple mushrooms. Really lacking anything creative, special just nothing there. $22.95 a piece This may have once been a very nice place to eat. Whomever is cooking there now is not living up to the hype of it's past. What a waste of money. A complete disappointment for my birthday dinner. We chose not to stay for dessert. We will not ever go back. The server was great. She never stayed at the table too long. I got the impression she didn't want too much feedback. It wasn't too loud but it never filled up either.

Lunch here with church family. Our waitress Lindsey was amazing. She not only had our party of 18, she had to other parties of ten. She didn't miss a beat or dish. And had a smile and charm as she worked. Food was very good and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. This group loles to get dessert and Maxie's came through on this too. Restaurant was clean and staff was friendly. I do what to giving a shout out to the kitchen. They were on top of their game too. With having three group to cook for ...as well as small groups. Maxie's Restaurant was pretty empty when we ate there on Saturday. The waitress was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed during our meal. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We ordered appetizers which were the best part of the meal. We took advantage of the happy hour and got wings for $.50 a piece. They were crispy and well seasoned. Even though the rest of the food was ok nothing really stood out like the wings. At this point I don't really see a need to go back. I would definitely give them a try if you find your self looking for a place to eat but I wouldn't go out of your way to get there.
