Amazing local sushi, for a very reasonable price, considering it is a Michelin star rated restaurant (around 15000 Yen for two people, including sake) The atmosphere was very cozy, fish was the freshest I’ve ever tasty, and the rice was perfect. It was truly mesmerising to see the sushi chef creating an almost art or dance with his hands, while preparing the sushi As I don’t speak Japanese, I simply asked for the omakase, but saw other tables getting some sort of set with grilled fish included which looked very tasty too!

Thank you for such a wonderful meal! This is one of the best omakase I've had! Fresh, and with its own character, every piece is a different tasting story. They were fully booked but managed to find a way to squeeze me in for lunch when I went in person to ask, I am so happy that it happened!

Just outstanding. But you need to be a regular to get a reservation…months in advance. Find a regular and invite them, you will not regret it. Take sake and you get to pick a bespoke glass.

Sushi here is of an amazing quality and at a fraction of a price compared to Tokyo. Service was really friendly and accommodating, and I was in my happy place. Probably the best sushi in Kanazawa, and definitely comparable to the sushi shokunin in Tokyo. Certainly can't beat the seafood in Ishikawa!

Best Sushi I’ve ever had! Sashimi also looks delicious although I only had the sushi set (very good price too). Will get the full set next time if I get more time >< that takes 2.5 hours though so make sure you have a relaxed night.

We had dinner at Respiración Kanazawa and it was honestly incredible. Every dish was a surprise, Japanese flavors with a Spanish twist, delicate and beautifully balanced, like little pieces of art on the plate. The dessert was unforgettable, a fig creation that completely blew us away – something we’ve truly never tasted before. But what made the evening even more special was the service. The staff were so warm, attentive, and genuinely kind that we couldn’t help but fall in love with them. It felt personal, human, and added so much to the experience. This place is a gem – creative food, amazing people, and an atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave.

I found this place after failing to book Makinonci in time and it far exceeded my expectations. Every dish blew me away. The creativity, flavors and presentation were all executed perfectly in each dish and cooked to perfection. The service was impeccable as well - great storytelling/charisma from our servers about each dish along with the Michelin level attention to detail. They noticed my friend was left handed and set her cutlery accordingly and even gave her left handed chopsticks at the end! On top of that I felt the timing of the meal was on point. My friends and I have still not stopped talking about how amazing this dinner was. A truly unique and memorable experience! Highly recommend!!!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The atmosphere is beautiful, natural, and cozy. I also loved the music, a mix of lofi/hip-hop. The food was perfect in my opinion. Flavorful, vibrant, balanced and the use of local ingredients makes it so special. Highly recommend the wine pairing. The best part of all was the service. My Japanese was limited but the staff was able to accommodate and provided excellent descriptions of the food for us in English. Everyone was so kind and friendly. Great experience from the food to the service and the ambiance. The host was very informative and friendly with each course plus the inspiration for the dish. The most memorable dishes was the bear ragu and venison. Both these dishes really surprised me in terms of taste and flavours. The food and atmosphere is incredible. By far the best venison we’ve ever had. My only gripe was ordering several glasses of wine for 1,800 yen and being charged over 4,000 each.

My husband and I are in our honeymoon in Japan, and he came across this restaurant during the planning process for our trip. One of the best restaurants we've ever been to in terms of hospitality, and we've been to numerous 3-star michelin restaurants. It is also unpretentious. The restaurant itself is like a museum, it is idyllic and we were in a private room, the food was excellent and varied. You shouldn't miss this restaurant if you visit Kanazawa.

1 star Michelin kaiseki beautiful traditional restaurant. Require reservations in advance. The oldest in Kanazawa. The restaurant is made up of individual rooms. We got table and chairs. We came for dinner and the experience was truly amazing. The room was beautiful. The kaiseki food and sake were amazing. The staff was super star and professional! They were very welcoming and made the experience the special treat.

I went there for my birthday in a private room. I have been to many Michelin starred restaurants but this was by far the best dinner I ever had. The service was impeccable, the food was incredible. Very little processed to maximize the raw quality of each ingredients. The lady how served us was marvellous and guided us through the meal.

Best Japanese I’ve been to so far, we went right when crab season started so the course was crab themed and so good. The best part is the hospitality, the owner makes sure to give each guest personalized attention with the warmest welcome! Would definitely recommend.

This restaurant is the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine as far as I know. It offers dishes prepared right before your eyes, using carefully selected ingredients and exceptional skills. While incorporating new approaches, it maintains the essence of traditional Japanese cuisine, creating experiences that can only be enjoyed here. Furthermore, the heartfelt hospitality of the Nakai-san allows you to truly appreciate the beauty of Japan. This restaurant embodies the Kanazawa philosophy that "tradition is a continuum of innovation."

Again this would be a 4.5 but alas it can’t be done so more 4 than 5. Kaiseki cuisine is essentially what we know as a traditional Japanese multi course meal though in this instance at Zeniya, had adapted a modernness with its menu. I sometimes find kaiseki meals to be a little too bland for my liking but this was not the case here and every dish was well balanced and carefully put together to form a great meal! Sushi chef Yamaguchi is extremely gifted with his knowledge on aging, fabricating, cooking, etc of all seafood that is served at this amazing establishment. Open for 30 years now and it blows my mind this place isn’t more recognized than it is, which is even more alluring. Not only was chef Yamaguchi of the utmost professional, but so was the rest of the staff. Extremely welcoming hospitality through and through. Cannot say enough amazing things about this place. Yes, if you eat at Mekumi you will be doomed forever, meaning other places will probably pale in comparison. Mind blowing from beginning to the end; every nigiri tells a story. The taisho’s eyes really sparkle when he elaborates on fish and the ocean, bringing the narrative to life. I couldn’t help but smile.

Amazing quality of fish. There is both a tea and sake pairing available. The chef is very friendly and uses a translation device to interact with you. I arrived at makinonci, a French restaurant delicately interwoven with Japanese ingridients and sensibility, tucked inside a beautifully preserved old house. What unfolded was one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. Each plate arrived like a quiet revelation: precise, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in both elegance and place. It was cuisine that spoke two languages - French technique and Japanese depth - in perfect harmony. And then, a glass of Riesling from Rheinhessen halfway across the world from home, yet somehow exactly where it belonged. I had a most wonderful dining experience at Makinonci. Chef Makino makes you feel like you've been invited to dine in his own home, located on a hillside that overlooks the city. I found the seafood to be the highlight, especially the botan ebi, the nodoguro, and the amadai. Overall, the experience was cosy, lively, and playful. Would love to come back again to see what else Chef Makino has in store during a different season!

Chef Hirokazu creates a vibrant and exciting menu based on local seasonal ingredients and the fusion of traditional Japanese with his French training is second to none. An amazing experience with tremendously friendly and engaging head chef and staff. We were a group of three hungry guys who had no idea what to expect from such an experience. We came in with open minds and hearts, and were treated with an excellent dinner beyond our wildest expectations. There were so many different types of food with so many different types of presentation that even though the menu displayed a certain number of items, if felt like we had 2 or 3 times that amount. The menus we were given were full graphical, so it allowed us to play a bit of a guessing game as to what we would receive. The drink options were also excellent, and you could find a drink to pair with each food item. But even without any of the drinks and just plain water, the food experience is tremendous. The menu is also seasonal, so if are lucky enough to be in the area multiple times of the year, you'll be treated to different meals each time. The head chef had a very impressive command of the English language, even though he had only been learning for about months when we met him. He and his staff will definitely be very well practiced in a bunch of languages within a year or two if they keep up the amazing level of dedication that they displayed during our visit. The price is not cheap, but clearly everyone is working hard enough to make it worth it. Very highly recommended, and if the only thing you do when you visit Ishikawa (or even Kanazawa) is eat dinner here, it is 100% worth doing.

A truly unique and amazing once in a lifetime omakase tempura experience. Every single dish was delicious and perfectly fried.

I booked through Toreta, where it listed the price as ¥13,200 per person (tax included, service charge excluded). We were two people and had two drinks total (one beer, one shochu), but the final bill came total of ¥39k. No matter how I calculated, I couldn’t figure out how they arrived at that total. Note that Tablecheck price is even more ridiculous at ¥22k pp. Not transparent with their prices. The food was good, though I felt it was overpriced for lunch. Note that egg is added to the batter, in case that matters to you. Very light batter. The chef speaks a little English and will respond if you ask questions, but he’s not the interactive type as he focuses on cooking, serving, and briefly introducing each dish. Don’t expect much in terms of service. He also doesn’t see guests off like what any high end Japanese restaurants would. He would get his staff to do it. Photos only allowed for the food you’re eating, no taking photos of their cooking / chef / staff etc. If you ask me I do get the feeling the place is biased for foreigners. It’s a shame because the food is good, price transparency & service in general was lacking.

Horrible experience. 1. The main chef did not make our food (HUGE Red Flag). The chef will always do this at any notable restaurant unless noticed before booking which we were not. 2. Nobody else eating dinner besides us - every other Japanese customer was gone. 3. The staff was cleaning up the restaurant while we awkwardly ate our food. Do not go here. Do not waste your money. Especially if you are a foreigner, they gave the Japanese customers before us more pieces of watermelon for dessert. The food also was nothing special. Wow. Disgusted to waste a dinner here with the countless glorious options Japan has to offer. Whichever Michelin person gave this place 2 stars needs to be re-evaluated as a reviewer.

The course was a great blend of seasonal fresh catches with evergreen favorites like caviar. The shrimp and the ochatsuke, in particular, were delightful, the giant okra succulent, and the chef's skill with honekiri was almost as good as the hamo.

2 stars Michelin tempura restaurant in quiet residential area in Kanazawa. Need reservation in advance. Wonderful omakase dinner experience. 8 seats at the counter. Staff were very polite and helpful. Chef did his best to explain the dishes. We had around 15 courses. The tempura was light, with the freshness of the seafood and vegetables shining through the very thin batter. I prefer the vegetables tempura actually surprisingly! I chose tendon (tempura on rice) to finish. Thank you.

I read the low-star reviews here and didn't really get it; this was an absolutely exquisite experience from start to finish. The chef and his sous were engaged and friendly throughout, even with limited English, and I tasted several local and seasonal Japanese ingredients I'd never had before that were mind-blowing. The people I sat next to were locals and repeat customers and we had a great conversation. I'm a foreigner (New Yorker, woman, traveling alone) so I just can't imagine what everyone else experienced was discrimination against foreigners. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2-hour lunch and would love to come back in a different season. Thank you to the team!

Extremely Disappointed – Unprofessional, Discriminatory Experience at a Supposedly Michelin-Starred Restaurant My boyfriend & I recently dined here during our trip to Japan while on a culinary adventure reviewing countless restaurant across the country, and despite having experienced incredible hospitality across the country, this was by far the worst dining experience we’ve had here. We arrived on time and were unexpectedly seated in a private room, isolated from all other diners. After only a few small courses, we were moved to the main counter after everyone else had already been served and was finishing up. The main chef, who appeared to be preparing dishes for the other guests, did not cook for us, did not speak to us, barely acknowledging our presence. To make things worse, we noticed we were given noticeably less pieces of fruit for dessert than other customers— as if we weren’t worth the full experience. It was subtle, but clear. We’ve dined at countless restaurants in Japan over the past few weeks — from street food to fine dining — and this was the only time we felt unwelcome. The treatment felt discriminatory. For a restaurant with two Michelin stars, this behavior is completely unacceptable. Avoid this place if you are a foreign guest —-unless you’re okay with being treated like an afterthought.

A man of few words, chef Kibatani simply focuses on producing excellent food at his 8-seater, using mostly locally caught Kanazawa seafood. The firmness of the seafood highlights the freshness and in many cases, he recommends a dash of only salt, light wasabi and a drop of lime. Ate almost everything except the monkfish liver. 20 bite-sized morsels of sheer gastronomical pleasure including 9 sushi pieces, some of which are featured. Don't underestimate the special sauce concoctions, especially the sea cucumber sauce.

Wonderful omakase experience in one of the best if not the best city for sushi in Japan. All the fishes are fresh even when you dine on the last slot, very delicious, generous cut size, great service, and atmosphere. The chef, Mitsuhiro Kibatani, have two expressions, he looked serious and attentive when preparing the sushi, and he looked cheerful when speaking to the customers! There's a total of 21 sushi. You'll be asked if you can't eat certain things/allergy. The sushi is on first floor behind the sliding door, the second floor is a bar.

28000 yen for the omakase course. Booked through my hotel with no issues. It's the sliding door right by the entrance, on the right is a staircase that goes to a bar not the restaurant. There's only 8 seats. Didn't have to say my name or confirm anything and was directed to my seat right away. The chef looks very serious while preparing, but has a great friendly smile when explaining the dish. The chef and the assistant chef explained the dishes well in English. Highlights were the oyster miso soup, dish with the pink sauce, and the shrimp nigiri. The miso soup was incredible. There was a small piece of shell left in the crab and rice dish, but I wasn't bothered too much by it. Total was 21 dishes (ate too fast and forgot to take pictures of 2 of them) and around 100 minutes. I think the seatings when the sun is still out they open the garden up to let the light and air in. Overall service was excellent all around.

Great Omakase in Kanazawa. Easy to book online and fairly priced. The service was attentive and courteous, we loved the starter plates, the sushi was was excellent and the crab was a nice surprise. We were served some excellent sake throughout the course and an crisp beer at the end ensured a memorable night.

Loved this place, the food was excellent, I had the omakase sushi, blowfish sashimi and the assorted tempura. The chef is sassy and fun to be around. Two separate customers had birthdays, so we sang for them and the staff put candles in the sushi, which was so fun.

A very worthy sushi place. The shop is about 10-20 minutes walk from Mikawa station and just nearby the Mikawarinkai park. There are variety of sushi and don to choose from. The price is considerably cheap compared to the quality and the atmosphere. I ordered Omakase sushi set which costs only 3000 yen for 10 high quality sushi + steamed egg + miso soup + ice cream. Totally recommend!

Fresh delicious sushi handmade in front of you by a truly professional chef who has an all-around great personality. Good environment to eat, spacious and clean. I eat the lunch menu, I personally recommend the 'omakaseonigiri', this sushi plate has the best cuts with a rich variety of fishes. It comes with miso soup, salad, egg steamed custard, and ice cream. For a lower budget, you can order their sushi bowls which are also delicious. Their dinner menu is different. You can also order individual sushi. If you find yourself around Mikakawa it is a must eat. The staff is also caring and attentive.

A very special experience with a very friendly chef and staa, delicous and fresh seafood. Language was a slight barrier, but the chef and team did their very best to explain each dish, also showing us pictures of each fish. There were about 9 seats at a time. We spent 16,500 yen for the omasake and additional 6,000 yen of sake (various kinds), and believe it was worth every penny and would highly recommend. Call ahead and reserve!

DELICIOUS! I have had omakase sushi (leave it to the chef) before in Japan and I would have to say Chef Ikuta’s selection was impressive. He even loves to fish during his time off and caught one of the tuna we had. One of the best sushi I have ever had! We had a great time conversing with him as well. I highly recommend Sushi Ikuta if you are ever in Kanazawa.

Everyone was so kind to me even though I was a foreigner with limited Japanese. The sushi chef explained the ingredients to me in English, but it was unfortunate that we could not converse freely like with the other customers. However, the high quality of the restaurant is clear from how many regulars there were on that night. I really appreciate how some of them tried talking to me when they noticed I was traveling by myself. It created a very warm and friendly atmosphere. The highlight of the crab course was the kobako crab. It was the most delicious sushi I had ever tried in my life. Watching the sushi chef hard at work was an honor. Everything you could wish for in a sushi restaurant. The chef is young, friendly and passionate about fish and fishing. The food is top notch and it's fairly laid back, not the hyper serious sort of place. There's about 8 seats, all at the bar. Will return!

First omakase experience in Japan… and it was very disappointing. The only positive note was the chef, who was nice. But the courses were nothing special. Too much wasabi on every nigiri which completely covered the taste of fish. Even worse, the fish was not even boned properly as I found a fishbone stuck in my throat after the dinner. I expected a very different kind of sushi service for a city like Kanazawa, based on pure raw fish taste with little seasoning. Overall it was really too expensive for the poor service.

Great fun. The seafood sushi was super fresh, yummy and fast. At 2pm on a weekday in Sept I waited 35 mins for a seat. You need to get a ticket from the reception desk by using the tablet (you can switch it to English) and choose between counter or table. The counter has the conveyor belt continuously moving around in front of you with a variety of options that you can take any time.
