Karatsu Castle, a stunning historical landmark originally completed in 1607, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the rich heritage of Karatsu City. This magnificent structure was built using materials from the nearby Nagoya Castle and stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful bay and open sea. Often referred to as Maizuru Castle, which translates to 'the castle of the dancing crane,' it gets its name from the nearby beach that resembles a crane with outstretched wings.
It's majestic! There are two ways to access the mountain top, elevator and stairs! The elevator costs 100 yen per adult! Stairs up to the top are more charming, and offer visitors a great view of the Karatsu bay! The gardens on different slabs of the mountain have plenty of spaces where children and youths can have rampaging! The basement on the mountain top is extremely beautiful! It costs 500 yen per adult to visit the castle! The top floor which was originally used as a watch post will certainly give the visitors a thrilling swing of wind! Watch your steps while on the top! It slightly slides downwards! Be extra careful while capturing pictures because a simple indifference may cause your precious phone or camera to go down! The parking space before the castle is not so expensive! Enjoy!!

Small castle on top of a hill. There is an elevator to get to the castle ground (¥100/one way) but only stairs inside the castle. Interesting artefacts on display. Great view of Karatsu Bay and town from the top of the castle.
Angelo ( — Google review
Beautiful small castle. The elevator (200y pp) allows wheelchair access to castle's grounds but not indoors. The staff were super friendly and kind. The view to the ocean was picturesque. Cute cats are always a plus. 🐈 ♡
Hwon — Google review
Beautiful castle by the sea. The exterior and castle grounds are very nice but the interior is redecorated much to the taste of the 80s (i.e., staircase). It has a nice exhibition, though labels and explanations are in Japanese. The shop is nice and the personnel very kind. It is a bit out of the way, but to me it is worth visiting.
Manuel M — Google review
Probably one of the coolest castles I have visited while circumnavigating japan, high on a hill surrounded by water, overlooking the beaches and the city. Soo cool
Only I — Google review
Must go place, very informative in the museum, nice scene on top floor (5th floor), but beware its windy when staying outdoor.
Raymond L — Google review
Beautiful grounds around the castle where you can have a leisurely walk and view the city. For an unrestricted 360-degree view of Karatsu, pay the entrance fee to access the observation deck. Note you can't use the new 500 yen coin, but staff are friendly and helped us to change to an older coin to pay the ticket from the machine.
A L — Google review
Pro: it's a beautiful castle that dominates the local landscape. It has amazing views. The 2 hr bus from Fukuoka was worth it just to see the view from the top deck of the castle. There's an incredible view of the sea and nearby islands on one side, and rivers and mountains on the other. The castle is beautiful from the outside, and the entrance was relatively cheap at ¥500. Also, the place is climate controlled. The exhibits have a decent range of pottery, swords, armour, and graphics depicting the region's history. Con: this is a rebuilt castle with a bad interior design, with the tiling looking like it's from a bathroom from the 1990s. There aren't many views until you get to the top deck , because they've remodelled the interior to be more of a museum. For the museum: There is almost no english, and the QR code you scan to read more about the castle asks you to download an app that currently isn't working ( at least on my phone which is a Google Pixel 8). They should just make the place bilingual with Japanese and English so it is easier for the majority of foreign tourists. If you don't care about history, this point won't bother you too much.

Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove is a vast forest of Japanese black pine trees, spanning approximately 4 kilometers in length and 500 meters in width. Originally planted by the first Karatsu feudal lord, the trees form an arc along the sandy beach and blue sea, bending under the influence of cool sea breezes. The area provides a serene ambiance with thousands of pine trees scattered throughout, releasing a gentle aroma as you walk on fallen leaves.
Drove up. Relaxing and windy. Great views of the city. Definitely recommended. Plus even the parking is free too.
Charles T — Google review
I've ridden (bicycle and motorcycle), driven and walked through here and it's always nice. The road is narrow. If you're on a bicycle it can be a bit sketchy, lots of traffic, trucks and buses, but you can push on the sandy trail on the beach side of the road if it gets too hairy. 2023
Brent B — Google review
Really cool place to take a walk. The trees are all slanted and it is amazing how they are all standing. The area is very large and you will multiple areas to park a car to enjoy this amazing pine grove. Plus, it is right next to the a very nice beach that is also worth a visit.

Although trip to Karatsu from Fukuoka took a long time, thabks to Nijo No Marsubara Pine Grove walkikg trail, I felt very proud of my decision. My parent really loved here as well.

Beautiful, cool (temperature) and serene. Was a very memorable walk. There are also children's play areas scattered along the path, so great for kids to play and parents to relax. Due to the ground being covered by pine needles a lot of noise is absorbed. The road is less than 100m away from the path but the sound of cars driving by is very faint. If you're in the area, consider giving Karatsu Burger Matsubara Honten a try
Vernard Q — Google review
Lovely, quiet, beautiful place. Thousands of pine trees are all over the place. Not too many people and the area is huge. You are steping on fallen pine leaves, it is soft and it release a faint of pine fragrance. It is a very nice place for a short walk. I walked 3km from Karatsu Castle to Niji no Matsubara, then another 2km to JR 虹ノ松原駅.

Nanatsugama is a captivating natural attraction in Saga, featuring a group of seven sea caves formed by the relentless wave erosion of black basalt cliffs. While its name suggests seven caves, there are actually more to explore. Visitors can take a boat ride to witness the mysterious beauty up close, admiring the striking contrast between the clear green sea and the rugged rocky ceilings within the caves.
I was searching for places of interest in Saga and Nanatsugama came up, so I was intrigued and decided to drop by on my way to Karatsu. We regretted it as soon as we arrived. It was a long walk from the parking lot to the site, and although the view was nice, it was physically demanding. When we got to the quay, we were glad we came. I took a lot of pictures to commemorate the visit. If I ever go again, I would like to take a sightseeing boat.
ぼくサノス — Google review
Visited Nanatsugama in Karatsu and had a really enjoyable time. The views of the sea were absolutely stunning, with dramatic cliffs and endless ocean making it a peaceful spot to explore. I didn’t take the boat ride into the sea caves, but I spotted one from the trail, which was already impressive enough. There’s also a bit of light hiking involved, which adds to the experience if you enjoy nature. What made the visit even more memorable was discovering the 乙姫大明神 (Otohime Daimyōjin) statue nearby. It added a nice touch of folklore and culture to the natural beauty of the area. Overall, it’s a great place for a scenic stroll, a bit of coastal breeze, and a dose of Japanese mythology—all in one visit.
Edwin — Google review
Nice hike. Great for dates. Was quiet and secluded with lots of great views and hiking trail.
Rick L — Google review
The view is even more beautiful than in the photos. The park is spacious, so you can enjoy walking around and easily spend an hour there.
T K — Google review
Absolutely amazing little hike along the water. The trails are easily to follow and leads to beautiful views of multiple caves. Their are plenty of picnic tables, so be prepared to pack lunch. Plus, there is a very large and free parking lot.
Kristin P — Google review
Absolutely amazing natural beauty in saga. A must see if you are in the area, even if you are in Fukuoka it's worth the trip. If you want to see the park on top of the rocks you need to go by car (I rented a taxi for a few hours). Theres a lot to explore at that park and you can get pretty close to the caves but to see them best it's worth going on one of the tour boats. Really breath taking, Ive seen many natural wonders but this was one of the more impressive!
David N — Google review
From parking lot, there're 2 ways to get through a scenic spot. If Toilet in the middle, left side is easier way as concrete street which right side is stairs with forest and meadow view. There're a few entrances to view points both Nanatsugama and Motose.
Supak R — Google review
This is a great stop for anyone interested in seeing Saga’s natural beauty. Those who enjoy fishing can do so as well. Public transportation to this location leaves much to be desired as the bus takes one quite far from the caves, but the walk is worth it. For those driving here the roads can be a little narrow and poorly marked, so drive carefully. This is a good place for an outdoor lunch as well.

The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall in Karatsu showcases an impressive collection of enormous 19th-century floats featuring fish and dragons, which are used during the annual Kunchi festival. Located just a brief walk away from JR Karatsu Station beside the Karatsu Shrine, visitors can enjoy admiring the incredible design, colors and history of these magnificent floats. The admission fee is a reasonable 310 yen and includes viewing of a short documentary on the festival.
Interesting exhibit and information provided. There are 13 of the 14 "Hikiyama" , 3-wheel carts still existing from the 600 A.D period, one of which is on display at the Exhibition Hall, with a mechanical doll of the peach, "momo-taro" boy. Festival is on Sunday after the first Monday of October.
Julie H — Google review
I was very disappointed that we couldn't get closer. They were hard to see from far away. Also they were behind glass, so taking pictures was also hard. Costs 310¥ to get in.
Beatrice T — Google review
I think it's neat and the admission fee isn't too high but why is it behind glass at a distance? Is it too hard to place stanchions? I've seen national treasures on display with less protection. Hopefully they can complete the maintenance of the main venue soon.
Beatle M — Google review
The floats were beautiful, and for those who'd like to learn more there are detailed descriptions on the upper floor, as well as a video showing the annual festival. Well worth the entey fare.

Former Takatori Residence, located in Tangjin City, Saga Prefecture, is a sprawling estate covering about 7600 square meters. Once the home of coal baron Takatori Koreyoshi, this grand mansion boasts a large Japanese-style building area and various wings for different purposes. Visitors can explore the family/private wing, public/formal wing, and public/large capacity wing, as well as a Noh performance space. Guided tours offer detailed insights into the residence's history and architecture.
At first, I thought "do I really want to see yet another former samurai residence?" But this one was super cool and special, and I really enjoyed it.

Beautiful building with many great rooms. The tour guide was very kind & had lots of great info about the building & history. A great way to spend an hour. Also close to the beach. Enjoy a nice walk on the beach after the house tour. Highly recommended.

Karatsu Shrine, a Shinto shrine founded in 755 AD, is famous for its annual Karatsu Kunchi festival and a large white torii gate. The festival, held from November 2nd to 4th each year, originated around 190 years ago as an agricultural celebration to thank the god of the shrine for bountiful harvests. The festival features unique floats shaped like sea bream and samurai helmets drawn through the streets.
The Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are two exceptional cultural destinations in Japan that present an enthralling fusion of customs, history, and festivities. The Karatsu Shrine is a breathtaking location with deep spiritual meaning. The temple is located in the center of Karatsu City, but its calm surroundings and architectural design offer a peaceful respite from the busyness of everyday life. A beautiful entry is provided by the torii, or shrine gate, and the lovely path that leads up to it. The main hall has a reverent aura due to its elaborate woodwork and distinctive design. An unforgettable show takes place every year in early November during the Karatsu Kunchi Festival. It's a bright and colorful celebration of the rich cultural legacy of Karatsu. The festival's centerpiece is the parade of enormous, elaborate floats known as "hikiyama." These floats have been painstakingly made and beautifully ornamented. The visual spectacle of watching these floats being pulled through the city streets is enhanced by the celebratory atmosphere created by the music and rhythmic chants. The event also showcases the skills of the local community with a range of traditional performances, like as taiko drumming and lion dances. In the vibrant food stands and marketplaces that spring up throughout the festival, guests can indulge in a vast variety of regional specialties and handicrafts. The friendly welcome of the villagers is what really makes the Karatsu Kunchi Festival unique. They take great delight in introducing guests to their culture, which adds to the unforgettable experience. It's the ideal chance to become fully immersed in Japanese customs and experience the pride and unity that this event represents. In summary, the Karatsu Shrine and the Karatsu Kunchi Festival are a fascinating fusion of culture and faith. While the festival presents an exciting and colorful display of Japanese culture, the shrine offers a tranquil haven. Without a doubt, visiting these two attractions will deepen your awareness of Japan's rich history.

Stopped in to view the Shrine, the temizu was empty (no water) due to Covid. They had many smaller shrines around the perimeter which were interesting to visit.

Went there during Karatsu Kunchi so there was really nice festival atmosphere.
Artur D — Google review
Beautiful quiet shrine. I recommend to stop by if you're in the area!
Sophie K — Google review
I only saw the outer area as I was passing on to the castle. I washed my hands in the basin near the entrance which was nice. Given that it was a holiday and a festival day, the area was really busy. Also, there was a man shouting over a loudspeaker nearby to bring attention to his haunted house set up near the shrine entrance. Seemed inappropriate, really. On a quieter day, I'd like to check it out and give it more time.

Hado Cape, situated at the northern tip of the East Matsuura Peninsula in Kyushu, is a picturesque destination offering a range of activities. The area boasts stunning coastal views and an observation deck where visitors can observe marine life. It's recommended to visit with a partner as it's considered a romantic spot, complete with a heart statue that serves as the symbol of the cape. Activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming are popular here.
A little far from the city center and bus rides are few and might take much time reaching the place. If you're taking the bus coming from the city center you'll need to change bus ride at Yoboku Bus Station, where the famous Yoboku Morning Market is at. You may ask some info at the reception or bus drivers if there are any. There's a hotel that nearby that offers stay, public bath and serves lunches. I think you have to call to make reservation for lunch, and ask about their closing time. The services are affordable. It's good to take a warm bath after the long walks around Cape Hado and around town.

Astoundingly worthwhile after a long haul with intermittent sleep on board right from Bangkok. We’ve found our lives a wee slower here and enabled us to appreciate those clouds in the bright blue sky, unpolluted air and wind upon our (sleep-deprived) faces. Everything was good except the garbages scattered along the shore
Chawin O — Google review
Spent a good 1 hour walking around this beautiful place. Cool fresh air and invigorating atmosphere was great for health
Cher K — Google review
Not really a main attraction and more of a day filler but it does what it says on the tin. It's a lovely promontory with a little jetty that leads to the underwater observatory. You go down some little spiral steps and voila, like something you'd see in a James Bond movie, a 360° panorama of the bottom of the ocean, 8 meters down, lit in coral blue, giant sea bream and herring flapping about trying to get a peek at you through the portholes. Just a small room but I was really entranced and spent a good 10 mins getting my 600 yen worth. Just a really lovely experience on a beautiful spring day. You've Yobuko and the Nagoya Castle ruins plus a nuclear power plant to explore within a 5km distance of this place, so if you're renting a car I highly recommend you tack it on to your itinerary.

The Mt. Kagamiyama West Observation Deck offers panoramic views of Karatsu Bay and the Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove. Positioned atop a hill, it is accessible by car due to steep and winding roads. The deck provides an awe-inspiring vista of Karatsu City and the sea, making it a popular destination for locals who come to watch sunsets or enjoy picnics in the surrounding area. Visitors can also explore different parts of Mt.
I was impressed by the panoramic view. Pine-covered beaches are rare, which makes this place even more special. The park is well maintained, and I saw turtles and koi fish in the pond.

This park is a quiet with a wealth of nature and easy to visit, not so far from central Karatsu city. There are sidewalks, shrines, observatories, some little historical sites and toilets throughout this large park so I could enjoy walking around comfortably. If it’s sunny, I’d recommend.

It's a great place to experience sunset! You have both mountains and sea in your view. You can see the Kartsu Castle from here. There are gift shop, pottery shop and a Udon shop here. You have to park your car a bit far from the main observatory. It's a 5 minute walk. You will enjoy and remember the view of the nature from here, for the rest of your life. Going here, @ sunset time is highly recommended.

Great place to enjoy fresh air in pine forest and the sunset. There is a story about the mountain. In the time of Emperor Senka in 6th century Princess Sayo had affair with the warlord Sadehiko. At the time of leaving of Sadehiko to Korean peninsula, Sayo climbed up to the top of Kagamiyama mountain and waved her shawl until the ship was at the sights. So romantic! ha!

Genkai Undersea Observatory Tower is a unique attraction that offers stunning views of the Genkai Sea from its deck, connected to land by a bridge. Visitors can descend 7 meters below sea level to an underwater observation tower and observe various fish species like black sea bream, grass puffer, and neon damselfish in their natural habitat. The serene atmosphere is enhanced by relaxing music as visitors watch the fish swim around them.
This underwater observatory is amazing. You get to see fish that are in their natural habitat. The underwater room is rather small but there is little crowd. I highly recommend if you are in the area. Plus the landscapes around are super pretty, we did a 30 minute walk :)
Léon C — Google review
This is a quaint little aquarium at the north-western most point of the Japanese mainland. You basically walk along a small bridge, then descend 10-15m down beneath the surface. There are portals allowing you to look out onto the small reef surrounding the structure, and the fish which live there. The fish were inquisitive and got close to the portals. Overall it was interesting, but very over-priced (1000 yen) for what it is - especially given the amount of effort required to get there. It is in a very pretty area, alongside a lovely little beach and headland. I recommend walking out to the point, the coming back to the beach walking along the path overlooking the nuclear power plant and boat harbour. This attraction is not suitable for the mobility impaired. There was no queue and ample parking. Allow 30 mins (more if walking out to the headland).
Evalyn V — Google review
This is the perfect place for children or people who are interested in the sea and nature. When you go undersea you can feel calm and listen to relaxing music as fish swim around you. There are different fish depending on the season, so you can see many kinds at different times. When you enter the ticket counter, there’s a spot to buy food for the fish to attract them at various points around the observation station. I really enjoyed visiting this place and was impressed by all the fish. It is a little small, but worth a visit if you’re in the area or are stopping at the beach.

The park was nice but the observatory was just fine.

Came around 11:45 on a Friday and wasn't busy at all, in fact was just us inside - it's quite a small space but are able to see numerous fish swim by. 550 yen for adults and 270 yen for kids - food to throw the fish before entering 100 yen. It's something you do once 8f your in the area, can enjoy around 20 mins looking at the fishes.

Such an awesome hidden gem. Quite an unassuming building, but below a wealth of fishy wildlife. It was fabulous to see the fish moving with the natural movement of the waves! Well worth the 560¥ entrance fee. Loved it!
Tamsin M — Google review
Totally love this little observatory! The admission is around 500 yen for adults, walk down the winding stairs and find a world of fish. Very calming experience.

Scenic spot
Mikaeri No Taki Falls, located in Ouchi Town south of the city center, offers a picturesque sight amid lush greenery. The trail leading to the falls is adorned with seasonal hydrangeas, adding to the natural beauty of the area. Visitors can also explore the Nanatsugama Limestone Caves by taking a boat from the nearby harbor. The falls are known for their symbolic representation of a male-female couple and are accessible via a short hike.
You don't wanna miss the Hydrangea season from this place. I heard some people called this waterfall with "Ajisai waterfall". Park your car for 500円 , quiet pricey but I think it's worthy to help the local people there. Walk for 5 mins for shuttle bus 100円 each way. The bus service it's very convenience for elderly. Disable friendly to watch the fall closely. The distance are not extremely far. Nice walk back to enjoy the Hydrangea scenic. Also there a track long away the river. Please be aware with the heat and watch your step near the waterfall during your visit!

Great little excursion from Karatsu. Don’t expect to be blown away but the setting of this waterfall is very nice with a bridge and a short path. We visited at the end of the day when there was nobody, which added to the magic of the moment.
Pierre V — Google review
Absolutely amazing place to visit if you are driving! The water diverges from the top and spill in from different angles. The water is also very clear and air there is fresh. I went with friends during a non peak period late May so I can vouch for peacefulness but there was no one around when we came.

A little busy during peak hydrangea season but well worth the trip. The trail up to the falls is an easy walk with lots of hydrangea and natural spots to appreciate along the way. At the falls it can be a little hectic with crowds, but not unmanageable. There’s a bus to the falls from the parking lot for those who can’t walk the trail. Outside of hydrangea season I imagine it’s equally beautiful.

On our way to Karatsu, we decided to make a quick stop here, hoping to catch the hydrangeas in full bloom. Unfortunately, they’re just starting to bloom—but in a week or two, they should be at their peak! The waterfall is easily accessible and doesn’t require much effort to reach. Visited on 30/5/25.

It was a stunning view on a clear December day of the Mikaeri waterfall. With the gorgeous red leaves on the trees and the setting sun, this was like a scene out or a movie.
Kris H — Google review
Gorgeous waterfall and lots of water due to the heavy, extraordinary rainy season which closed part of the trail on the right side viewing area and the walking trail along the river.
Annie S — Google review
Beautiful waterfall, and if the weather is hot enough; I'd suggest putting your feet in the water!

Local history museum
The Karatsu City Museum of History & Folklore is an impressive and aesthetically pleasing building that can be appreciated by fans of Zombie Land Saga. The museum primarily showcases the local history and folklore of Karatsu City. However, due to its closed state during my visit, I could only observe its exterior. Nonetheless, it appears to be a fascinating place for those interested in delving into the rich historical heritage of the region.

People in the town used to say it was a haunted house, but I heard that it became famous for Zombieland Saga and that many people come to see it. The building was designed by Mitsubishi Marunouchi Architects and Architects, and constructed by Kobe Mitsubishi Architects. Mitsubishi's architectural advisor at the time was Dr. Tatsuzo Sone, a native of Karatsu, who, along with Dr. Kingo Tatsuno, also of Karatsu, is a pioneer of modern Japanese architecture. The main building has a floor area of 428 square meters on the first floor and 413 square meters on the second floor. It is a two-story, gambrel-style building with a wooden veranda and a carriage porch at the front entrance. The seawall surrounding the building, which was in place at the time of land reclamation, still remains, and together with the building, it conveys the bustle of the port's past as a coal shipping port. (Translated by Google) I visited you on the Zombieland Saga sacred site pilgrimage tour! I really have to go here❣️ It looks like it's in a very dilapidated state and is dangerous, so it's not usually open. And since it's so close to the ocean, it's prone to corrosion. I was able to take photos from various angles. When you think of characters standing on these fences and roofs, your imagination goes wild. When driving there, it is shocking to see the museum suddenly appear in a residential area. It was quite close to the coast where it washed up. There are some things you can learn by actually going there. If you like Zombieland Saga, please check it out✨ (Original)
