The restaurant is very popular and the food is delicious. The service is good, they refill green tea for free. You need to book a table in advance, especially for dinner. Despite the delicious sushi, it was hard to relax, a lot of noise, everyone sits close together. The interior is very simple. In my opinion, it is better to buy online and take away. There is plenty of parking.

First time visitor here from Vancouver. Will I come back? Most likely yes. Food: really good overall. The negikura roll was unlike anything I've had before. It was heavenly. Transcendent, dare I say, and only because it combines two of my favourite aspects of any sushi: ikura and negitoro. Unfortunately, the yosenabe udon (not pictured) was not flavorful at all and mostly just spicy. The regular spicy tuna roll (not pictured) was very good. The D.A.M. good roll was nice, but the rolls aesthetics were better than the taste. Nothing crazy, just simply good. Service: overall, good. A little inconsistent on the speed, maybe because of a busy lunch hour. Between placing the order and getting three rolls was around 10 minutes, but it felt like 5, it was so fast! But the yosenabe took about 30 minutes which felt like a long time. Each server was friendly and made sure our tea cups were full. Price: decent, maybe a bit on the high side. Two specialty rolls costed $42 before tax. They were, however, filling and delicious. Portion size: good. They don't cheap out on the portions here. Presentation: all the food was presented nicely, especially the specialty rolls. Nothing was sloppy when it comes to presentation. Final verdict: a gem to visit in nanaimo if you're craving good sushi. I would love to try some of their other items next time. The negikura was definitely a game changer for me and I will be ordering that one again for sure. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise!

Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh! The portions are big, and the service is quick and attentive. The staff are kind and welcoming — you really feel cared for here. They also serve complimentary green tea, which is very tasty and refilled as much as you like during your meal. The atmosphere is cozy, especially if you book a table by the window. It can get quite busy and a bit noisy on weekend evenings, so it’s not the most private place — but if you want truly good sushi, this spot is definitely worth it! 🍣🍵✨

The first night, we had a private booth. The second night, we had a table in the middle. Noise was rather loud, and other customers were fairly close. The third night, we sat at the counter and watched the sushi masters ply their trade. The food was excellent all three nights, except the tonkatsu was a little dry. Service was very good. My wife's favorite sushi restaurant.

We recently visited Nanaimo and enjoyed some solid Japanese food. We tried the pineapple tempura, Catch the rainbow roll, and chicken yakisoba. While none of the dishes completely wowed us, they were all tasty and prepared well. The food here is good for Nanaimo standards, but it's not quite on the same level as what you'd find in the Lower Mainland. ​However, the real highlight of our meal was the service. Our server was exceptionally friendly and attentive, providing a top-notch experience from start to finish. They truly made our visit memorable.

WOW!! Hands down the best sushi I've ever had... I read reviews and was excited to try this but it really blew me away. Went for lunch, got the poke bowl lunch box and my partner got the Island Fever 2 roll. We both left so satisfied and had leftovers for dinner. Yum!!

Disappointed.. Since the reservation requires credit card info & all the good reviews, we had high hopes. But when we & another group got there 5 minutes prior to our reservations, they told us to wait outside just for that 5 minutes instead of sitting the groups at those empty tables. Not a customer focused experience from the get go. Then, food tastes just okay, really nothing special. We ordered the lobster rolls, flaming vipers, the popular items, we were quite disappointed. Besides, the restaurant is covered in smoke when they cook the scallops at the table. It was horrible to eat in a smoky room with bad ventilation. Your hair, clothes, everything smells smoky after eating there… We honestly think this place has good reviews because of the “fancy shows” (flaming vipers & etc.), it is NOT an authentic Japanese restaurant with great taste and service, at least not to our standards. Never again.

I was excited when the dish was served, but they plated three different dishes all on one plate. The assorted sashimi had a poor texture and there weren’t many types either.

Disappointing experience — the place felt lifeless We were in Nanaimo for the weekend and looking for a spot to have lunch. After some searching, we decided to try this place around 4 PM — but unfortunately, it was a poor choice. The atmosphere felt completely lifeless and uninviting. The food quality was very low — bland, poorly made, and just not enjoyable at all. On top of that, the service was rushed and uncomfortable. The waitress didn’t give us a moment to look over the menu, returning twice within less than 10 minutes to ask for our order — even though the place was nearly empty. While we were still eating, she came again to ask if we were finished, even though it was clearly obvious we weren’t. Believe me — if someone is truly done with their food, they’ll get up and leave. There’s no need to make them feel like they’re being pushed out.

The atmosphere and service was nice. The food was okay but nothing to blow you away. I love to get a ceaser at every place I try. But this ceaser didn’t quite hit that spot for me.

I visited twice, a month apart. The first time was ok, the second time was not good. I had Miyagi's Magic Prawns and one piece of sushi on my first visit for lunch. It was fine but not something I would order again or recommend. On my second visit, I had the seafood jambalaya and that was quite bad. It was rice and seafood in a marinara-style sauce- there wasn't anything creole about it. I picked the seafood out and left the rest. The server did not inquire about my barely eaten dish. This isn't a place I would recommend for their food.

Fantastic and innovative sushi. Lovely servers who will help make your experience smooth and enjoyable. We ordered a variety of sushi which all come served on a large platter for sharing. It's a great way to taste a number of different menu items. The sushi was fresh and the sauces really make the dish stand out from other sushi restaurants. Great variety for vegetarians, who are often left with very bland options at a regular sushi restaurant. Would recommend!

Went with a few friends and we all really enjoyed the experience on a Friday night. The building has a cool historic vibe and the atmosphere was warm and lively. We ordered a mix of dishes like some sushi rolls, a couple of mains from the grill, and a dessert to share. Everything was well-presented and tasty, and the sushi especially stood out. Service was friendly and helpful without being overbearing, and we never felt rushed. My friends and I agreed we’d definitely come back. Great spot for a relaxed night out with friends. 👍<3 !!

Absolutely, my favourite place in Nanaimo! Was up here for work this weekend last week so I went to quite a few restaurants, This is the only place I went twice. The food was absolutely amazing, but it was the service that was even better. The server remembered us from the previous and even remembered dietary issues, She was so lovely and so friendly… Just made us feel like old friends, even though she is very young and we are very old lol. If you’re stuck on a place to eat in Nanaimo, you’re not gonna go wrong with this!! Will 100% be back again!

Food wasnt bad to begin with but the portion seems a little on the lighter side. For an average of $20ish spend on their lunch set, would expect to be full and not be snacking on stuff just under an hour later. The tempura and fried chicken seem a little over cooked, could taste the charness in them. A small place , so if you plan to come for a bigger group, might need reservation.

Great sushi spot! Very friendly staff, quick service. Exactly what we were looking for on our holiday. Since we had our dog we took it to-go and enjoyed it next to the harbour.

All the employees were speaking Japanese to each other when we got in so we knew it was going to be good. We had the tonkotsu black, the miso tsukemen (I forgot to take a pic), salmon and avo sushi, and the regular sashimi. The ramens were so flavourful and rich. The sushi was fresh and buttery.

I was visited Nanaimo on Aug 2025 I went Bistro Taiyo Japanese Restaurant and this was pretty good and was portion very big Very fresh sushi

Great staff / atmosphere, a bit expensive, and terrible food. I got the Las Vegas roll and it was disgusting. Wayyyyyy too much sweet sauce on it. Felt like a dessert sushi roll. Not sure what they’re trying to hide by covering it in that much sauce haha. Soggy tempura and imitation crab inside of it. Meh. The saba nigiri was super chewy. Not bad tasting but I’ve never had chewy saba before. Dry rice as well. No tofu in the miso soup feels kind of cheap, but it was only 2 bucks which is pretty rare these days. In my opinion, if you’re a sushi restaurant, just get the basics down and you’ll have people lined up at the door! Fresh fish, perfectly cooked rice, and crunchy tempura. It can’t be that difficult to execute. Or at least put photos on the menu so you can see what you’re getting yourself into…

It’s ok. The roll I ordered was very different to how it was described on the menu and was absolutely huge. It would have been nice to have a heads up as a solo diner. The roll inside of all the toppings was small and very basic, like a basic cali roll with crab. Felt more like an over sauced bean sprout salad. My order of edamame never arrived, I ended up asking for it to go. The server was lovely and very apologetic

My favorite Japanese restaurant for sushi. Ordered a couple of platters to feed eight people. Two guests were complete novices but were really happy with selection.

Some of the most flavorful and fresh sashimi I have had for some time... and a nice presentation. A truly great value. Miso soup was inexpensive, but good. Free tea was a nice touch.

We always ordered in Umai, and it was good until recently the Special Platter we ordered was underwhelming, the sushi rolls were dry, and the sauce was lacking. Overall, it was just okay, but for the price, we are expecting more (sauces on top of the rolls?) The service was fast, and the staff was accommodating. Online ordering is easy as well.

My favorite roll ever is the west coast tuna roll!! I have ordered it for years and everytime I am through Nanaimo I order it! Love this place, great food, great prices.

Great prices as well! The service was good, but not overly friendly on the night we went. The food more than made up for it though!

Servers are pretty rude and uninterested. I get it, but you have to at least pretend when you’re working for tips unfortunately. The one girl wouldn’t stop dragging her feet really loud and it was super annoying. Used to really like this place but will just be going to another spot instead because it’s been the last 3 or 4 times I’ve dined here the service has been not great. Food is good though.

The space, Gorgeous. 5 stars just for the vibe! Sushi wasn’t my fave, but the miso soup totally hits. Overall, a lovely spot that just needs the sushi to catch up to its beautiful setting!

I went for dinner, and the place felt clean and welcoming. It looked like a good spot for a family meal or a small gathering. The staff were very friendly and had bright smiles, which made the experience even better. We ordered sushi, jjampong, and some tempura. The sushi was fresh, with a good cut and nicely cooked rice. The tempura was neatly presented, and the shrimp was plump and tasty. My friend had a set meal, which was clean and satisfying. The jjampong had plenty of ingredients and came with udon noodles, which was interesting. It was a bit heavier than I expected, so I’d take one star off for that. Next time, I’ll try a different dish.

The service was really really bad. They forgot to give us menus until we asked for it. Then we had to get their attention and ask to order. And then it took over 40 minutes to get our food. The kitchen actually made everything faster than that but the servers didn't notice until the sushi chef reminded them to bring it to our table. We were seated by the kitchen so we heard the whole exchange and apparently, the ticket for our table was lost so they just ignored the pile of food sitting there. The food itself was pretty good except one person's ramen was lukewarm with squishy noodles due to sitting at the pass for 15 minutes. The rice has very little flavour. I think it's likely California short grain instead of Japanese. Other notes: The spicy tuna and salmon rolls are the minced fish style here and not chunks of fish. The BC roll here is salmon flakes and not salmon skin.

Had a wonderful experience today at Sushi Ryu. We visit quite often and didn’t realize a Monday would be such a vibrant evening but forgot it was a bank holiday! I’ve never seen a team work together so well through an extremely busy period. The wait was considerable but the food was definitely worth it! Everyone was busy but also took a moment to make connection with each table. This is something we appreciated seeing these days. Thanks for the memorable visit.

Tried Sushi Ryu for the first time today and was very pleased. Our waitress, Belle, took fantastic care of us and was very attentive to our needs! Despite it being busy and hectic, things were done in a very orderly manner and we still received excellent service. We will be happily returning soon!

If you’re looking for takeout sushi for a larger group at a reasonable price, Tomo Sushi Togo is my go-to spot! ⁣ I’ve ordered their Party Tray (Platter A) twice now for my three Homestay students, and they still haven’t been able to finish it! ⁣ 64 pieces for $38 — you really can’t beat that value in Nanaimo. Highly recommend! 🍱

This is one of those don’t judge a book by its cover. This unassuming restaurant serves sushi with freshness not seen at many restaurants. The presentation was spotless and the taste was luxurious even though it is not an upscale sushi restaurant. I highly recommend coming here for your sushi fix. I work in the area and I will be a repeat customer.

We began our meal with takoyaki and miso soup, which turned out to be delightfully flavorful. For the mains, I ordered the sweet and spicy beef don followed by the mayo beef don for my wife-both dishes were generous in portion and richly satisfying. My children opted for the tonkatsu, and to our surprise, the accompanying soup came with a whole egg, rather than the usual half-slice. The servings were so large that they couldn’t finish, and we had to request a takeaway box. To end the evening, we enjoyed a mochi dessert, whose soft and delicate texture truly elevated the experience. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal—a solid thumbs up from our entire family.

The only place that seemed to be open late. We were glad that they were open. The staff was great and the wait wasn't too long for take out. The food was good, but could be better. I'm only comparing it to other sushi places I've had take out from. It would probably be better to dine in, so don't get me wrong. Definitely hit up this spot if you're craving some sushi and you're in the area.

Really enjoyed our meal at Nana Sushi! We ordered ramen, sushi, and yakisoba — everything was fresh and flavorful. The sushi was nicely prepared, the ramen had a rich broth, and the yakisoba was well-seasoned. Great variety on the menu and solid quality across the board. Definitely a place we’d come back to!

3.5-4 overall .Enjoyable experience here and reasonable pricing. Came for dinner and had the Bento boxes (priced at $21-24) with an adequate amount of food. Limited seating here and may be harder for larger than 4 groups. Food was good but more of hit the spot type than standout amazing. It's very home cook style than that of a modern/high end style. Would come back here to fulfill sushi cravings.

Tragically, Nana Sushi's tonkatsu Ramen has fallen off... a cliff. What was once great Ramen with melt-in-your-mouth pork rolls, perfectly made jammy eggs, and exquisite flavor is now disappointing Ramen with a smaller serving size of tough pork chop in disguise, a soft boiled egg (not a jammy egg), and medicore flavour. However the noodles and broth haven't changed. Additionally, on the phone we were told our order would be ready for pick up in 15 minutes. When I arrived I was told it would be 5 more minutes. "Okay, thats fine" I said. They must be busy I thought to myself. 10 more minutes went by and I was told they were working on the order right now and could not tell me how much longer it would be. 5 minutes later they told me the order was ready so I paid. However the order was in fact not ready yet. Nearly 10 minutes later the order was finally ready. If only I knew the disappointment that I was walking out with, but all I could think about was the burning of my flesh as hot Ramen began to spill out of the bag onto my hand. Please Nana Sushi bring back the way it used to be- fast and decisive service and high quality Ramen. We know you can do it. Please.

The food is good, waitress is friendly, so nice, she helps me whenever I need, I highly recommend if anyone want to try asian cuisine. The environment is great, so clean, so warm, good to hang out with friends, or just a family meal. I always go there 1-3 times a week. Trust me, it will be an unforgettable experience

THE best ramen and sushi. When they say "large" they mean large. There was a sweet brunette working, talking to me about music . She had such amazing customer service! I wish I remembered her name! The sushi was delicious, I got the scallops, and devoured it in seconds. Fresh and delicious. The ramen is SO filling, and perfect for a rainy day.

We drove pass this area a few months ago and found this hidden gem 😋Nice little Japanese restaurant, great food and friendly staff. Love their variety of sets and combos, very generous portions with reasonable prices, and delicious too, especially their sashimi/sushi sets. Since then, we always stop by and enjoy their food before heading to our next stop. It becomes one of our must visit places whenever we go on a road trip to Parksville/ Tofino 🌈

Maybe we just lucked out but we had the most amazing avocado roll. The avocado was perfectly ripe, not brown and so big. I barely got the phone out for a picture before my daughter had them eaten. I wonder if next time will be so perfect. This was at the South Nanaimo location. We also got the ramen noodles. Not bad at all and no MSG, which is so rare.

Cozy restaurant with AMAZING food! We tried a variety of sashimi and sushi rolls which were all very tasty and fresh. The standouts were the Prawn Tempura and Black Dragon Roll. Washing it all down with an Asahi was *chefs kiss*. This restaurant is a gem in Nanaimo and we will be returning whenever we are in the area!

Ordered take out and the food was good. This was our 2nd visit and quality was consistent. The reason for the low rating is because they snuck in PST on both visits. PST is not to be charged on food. Mentioned to the server both times but they continue to charge and blame it on a computer error. Will not return for a 3rd strike on a poor business practice.

I think we were the first customers ordered their HOT DISHES! We ordered chicken yakisoba, beef yaki udon and wonton soup. Delicious! Texture and temperature were perfect! Appreciate that they have hot food in winter. Will order again with their sushi as well! Staffs are friendly and professional. Best sushi place in the town 👍👍👍👍👍

This is the best sushi place I've tried so far in Nanaimo. The fish was fresh and the portions are correctly bite sized. So many other places in Nanaimo are obviously using flavorless California short grain instead of Japanese short grain rice. Not here! The rice is as tasty as the fish. Highlights for me were the salmon aburi and the unagi. Yum! There was a little bit too much sauce on the spicy tuna roll but that's just personal preference. We will definitely visit again.

A good restaurant with good service. The rolls were decent, although with too much cream cheese and not actual sushi. The Maki and Nigiri though were amazing and our favorites.

Feeling refreshed after finding this place, it’s like getting a deep rest. The staff here are truly kind and respond sensitively to customers’ needs, which was great, but the food was absolutely delicious. Located in a mall near the marina, I’m confident that stopping by when you’re coming to or leaving Nanaimo will leave you in a great mood.

Work trip dinner before taking the ferry back to Vancouver. I was craving for sushi, and I’ve good things about this place. Food was ok, it’s fresh for sure, I just think they rely on the sauce too much, I ordered 2 speciality rolls which are not on the pictures, they are way too saucy. The nigi toro maki is a little blend, tempura was a little too heavy on the batter. It’s not bad for Nanaimo standard.

Excellent slice of sushi and Japan. Immense variety and a great range of flavors all available at your fingertips. Great menu with good classics and even more interesting new dishes that tantalize the imagination and don't disappoint. If it were just that I would be happy, but wait, there's more. Service is fast and the prices are superb for what you receive. This is one of my favorite restaurant in all of Nanaimo. Grand praise aside, it is slightly cramped when busy and perhaps another server could avoid some minor serving errors. The chopsticks are disposable wood ones that threaten a splinter if not separated right. But beyond that it was a fantastic place to eat. Hope to see improvement and no loss in the stunning quality.

Went in with high expectations, and it was met. Of course there were things that could have been better, but compared to all the other similar sushi restaurants in Nanaimo, for the price, quantity, and quality, it met my expectations. Ended up being super fresh, decent portions, good sized rolls, lots of new rolls, and came out to be cheaper than most places too. Would definitely recommend a try!

Seto Sushi is a great modest little spot in our neighbourhood. I'm always satisfied with the quality, speed and price of what I order! The fancy rolls are my favourite, but the maki, temaki, nigiri and sashimi are always fresh and filling too. Nice big delicious portions of tuna or salmon always impress! The staff are friendly and courteous no matter how busy they might be too! I definitely recommend Seto Sushi. You might get raw food, but you won't get a raw deal here!

Food is otherwise great, but this has been the second time I’ve ordered a CONE from them, and they gave me a roll instead. Couldn’t return it since I had it delivered. But I really wanted to try their highly rated California CONE. But they gave me the roll instead. I already ordered a roll, to go with the cone and was looking forward to this meal. It’s frustrating because this happened when I ordered their Scallop CONE, and they gave me a sushi roll instead. Do they not thoroughly read their orders? So disappointing...I regret tipping.

It was okay, staff were really swamped so they did what they could, very friendly. Spring rolls were too soggy in oil for my liking. Rolls were very difficult due to dryness, but the flavors were still good!

This was the worst food experience I've ever had at an Umi Sushi Express. I usually order the beef Bento box. The meat was extremely fatty and not at all what I normally receive. The tempera was also very thick compared to other locations. I typically eat here when I see them in malls and enjoy my meal. I couldn't even finish this.

Surprisingly decent meal for a food-court sushi spot. The Miso Soup was really tasty. Sushi was fresh & flavourful. Veggie Tempura was crisp & hot. Teriyaki Tofu was good enough for M. to steal off my plate. We would both eat here again.

Garbage portion sizes. Ordered what I thought would be a normal sashimi platter with standard size pieces. Got 10 tiny paper thin slices of fish..... for $18. The fish didn't even taste that great either. Just complete nonsense. Hope your business goes under

Ordered the teriyaki chicken mini bento today and was unable to eat it. Chicken didn't look like chicken, small slimy pieces, maybe processed chicken at best. Veggies were thin sliced and not super appetizing. Yam fries weren't fries like in the menu picture. They were thin circles of yam with way too much tempura batter. Too bad because the service itself was pleasant.

i usually always get sushi from this place and they have been nothing but the best for the longest time, but i took a take out order that was completely messed up and messy. and they were super rude so i will be taking my business else where.

Ordered a mixed platter for two. While the presentation was a bit plain, every single roll was extremely flavorful. Pleasant surprise.

I got a chicken noodle bowl and it tasted great and the service was amazing. Definitely come back again.

Not Udon soup at all. No flavour, tasted nothing like the Japanese Udon. Has lots of Western veggies. Even the supermarket udon in Japan tastes better. Very disappointed.

I stopped for a delicious chop bowl and bubble tea. Unfortunately I left my wallet on the counter. Hours later I discovered that it was missing and returned to find they had kept it safely aside. I was so grateful for their thoughtfulness and their honesty! The two young ladies were very pleasant both in serving me initially and when returning my wallet to me. I only wish I had asked their names for this review. Edo did well to hire these two!

Excellent job on the service 👏 staff was busy with a lot of orders! They worked well together and got everything done efficiently. Food is great 👍 I had chicken and beef meal,rice and vegetables in a bowl 🥣 😋 👌. Would have taken a picture...but I was to hungry 😋
