Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a family-friendly destination that offers a blend of outdoor activities, historical sites, and museums. Established in 1944, the park encompasses numerous historic landmarks related to John Brown and the Civil War, as well as pristine nature spots and viewpoints along the Shenandoah River valley. The town itself features historic buildings, monuments, and a charming downtown district.
I didn't think a place like this existed! To think that its just 30 mins away was a plus for me! This is the place where you would want to go multiple times (winter, summer, spring, fall) a place where i could truly relax my body and mind! The old buildings that was left and preserved was a bonus and its just mind blowing that this existed and i was able to see and experience it. I have been 2x now but i still haven't seen tha whole place yet. If you are a hiking junkie then this is the place for you since it has multiple trails that everyone can enjoy! As a matter of fact i enjoyed it so much that i paid for a year for the park admission!

Harpers Ferry is one of those places that offers a little bit of everything—stunning views, rich history, and great outdoor recreation. Whether you’re looking to hike scenic trails, walk through America’s past, or simply enjoy a peaceful day by the river, this park delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended for families, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. Nestled at the meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a stunning destination that blends natural beauty, American history, and outdoor adventure. Our visit last Saturday was a refreshing and rewarding experience filled with scenic views, rich heritage, and plenty of time outdoors. For those who love the outdoors, Harpers Ferry is a dream. The park boasts numerous trails for hiking and trekking, ranging from short scenic walks to more intense climbs. A few favorites: • Maryland Heights Trail – Challenging but offers the best view over the town and rivers. • Jefferson Rock Trail – A short hike to a historic spot where Thomas Jefferson once stood. • Appalachian Trail – Yes, a section of this iconic trail runs right through the park! Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just want a light nature walk, there’s something for every level of adventure. Be ready for a lot of walking, especially up hills and along uneven paths. The historic charm comes with some elevation, but the views and the ambiance more than make up for the effort.
Mithlesh T — Google review
It was my first time visiting and it was absolutely gorgeous. We did the Maryland heights hike, its been on my bucket list and im so glad to have gotten it done! The weather was beautiful, the leaves are turning, and it was quite busy bit it was also a Saturday morning!
Jess F — Google review
Walked in from the visits center because parking in lower town is not available and the bus doesn't allow dog's. The walk is so amazing, along the Shenandoah River and railroad. Once your in town it is super quaint and beautiful. Had a nice lunch and walked is back. The stone steps leading back up the side of the hill are no joke.
Raquel M — Google review
Great experience. Arrived with our RV and had ample parking. Hopped on a shuttle leaving you at the base of town. Cute little taverns and shops. Adorable town. Visited on a Sunday afternoon and sad that the church was locked up. Why not leave it open for those of us wanting to spend some time inside praying? Cute town.
Colleen H — Google review
Just go! If you haven't been yet, you need to get there. So beautiful. Easy trails. So scenic and peaceful. Plenty of parking. And there's a free shuttle to the village. Loved it.
MaryBeth L — Google review
This parks is a must in this area plus visiting the little downtown. There is so much history and amazing views that you can spend a day easily. We just want to return and do hiking and keep exploring the park. Thanks so much to the employees that even without receiving a paycheck are willing to keep working and are keeping the park in an outstanding shape. You are real heros!
Maria M — Google review
Great experience exploring and walking around this National Park. Parking can be difficult and there are many hills and stairs to climb to get to various areas. Overall a beautiful and well maintained site with lots of historical information and visuals.

Nestled along the Appalachian Trail, Jefferson Rock is a distinctive shale rock formation offering stunning views of rolling hills and rivers. Named after Thomas Jefferson, who marveled at its beauty in 1783, this landmark features a broad piece of shale resting on four stone pillars. A leisurely hike to this iconic spot presents panoramic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River.
Beautiful area with incredible views. Tons of photo opportunities and an area to sit and relax. Walk/hike is fairly short, but is pretty steep at the beginning. Be careful at the top as there are some steep dropoffs.
Jay S — Google review
Good hiking. Love the place. You can pay an anual fee of $30 to Park in the town. From there is one mile and half hike to the magnificent place. Don't forget to dispositivo your parking ticket
Edison V — Google review
Such a beautiful view of the mountains. A great little place to stop and catch your breath along the Appalachian Trail.
Lynn H — Google review
Great view of the Potomac River from an elevated place. A little slice of history, while taking in an incredible view of the mountains. Near by is also Harper Cemetery, St Peters Catholic Church and the ruins of St. Johns Episcopal Church.
Phillip H — Google review
An interesting story and a nice view above Harper’s Ferry Jefferson Rock is one of the highlights of Harpers Ferry. It gives a good mix of history, scenery, and a bit of historic adventure that personifies the town. The hike to the rock takes you up the hillside, passing by the iconic St. Peter’s Catholic Church along the way. The path itself is fairly manageable, and most sections have railings, but once you reach the rock the protection stops. Because of this, I would recommend the visit only for those who are sure-footed and comfortable with uneven ground, as the drop-offs can be intimidating without barriers. The payoff, however, is worth the effort. From a position next to the rock you get a sweeping view of the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, as well as the historic town of Harpers Ferry nestled below. The vantage point is both dramatic and peaceful, giving you a sense of why, according to the stories, Thomas Jefferson, during his travels, found this very spot so moving that it now bears his name. For those who wish to explore more, you can continue on the trail past Jefferson Rock and make your way to the Appalachian trail, which adds another layer of history to the walk. The informational sign could use a little care but, overall, this is a scenic and meaningful stop, best enjoyed with good shoes and sure footing. Enjoy.
Ward D — Google review
This is a fantastic climb with spectacular views from a higher vantage point than from scenic streets at ground level, both at Jefferson Rock itself and along the way up to the rock exhibit. You can climb onto Jefferson Rock and sit to enjoy the views further. Visitor Parking: Street parking in town is extremely limited and only available on a short-term basis for the businesses nearby. Harpers Ferry National Park parking lot offers daily parking at affordable rates. It is situated along Shoreline Dr., where you can park for $10-$15, depending on if you have a motorcycle or private vehicle. A guided shuttle bus will take you to the bus stop along Shenandoah St., where you can begin the scenic walk of Old Town Harpers Ferry into the modern town.
Erica B — Google review
Amazing views of the Shenandoah River, and the town of Harpers Ferry. Beautiful history in regard to the nature overlook. It’s not a short hike up, about 0.1 miles. You will know you are headed in the right direction when you are heading up the stairway to the old Catholic Church. Well worth the walk!
Jay O — Google review
Nice historical spot and beautiful views. If you go on a weekday, especially later in the afternoon, no one is usually there! You can walk up the stairs from town but there is a bit of an incline; not a terrible hike, but may be difficult for some! If you’d rather get there without the climb, you can go through the cemetery above it for a fast walk down.

John Brown's Fort is a historic brick firehouse in Harpers Ferry, known for its connection to the abolitionist John Brown and his failed raid on the armory in 1859. This event is considered to have escalated tensions between the Union and Confederacy, ultimately leading to the start of the Civil War. The fort held by Brown and his army for three days has become a landmark site, offering visitors an opportunity to step inside and imagine the events that unfolded there.
The fort museum is a 3 hour experience with different educational videos and exhibits. Right now it’s under some light renovation on the outside so the entrance is at the rear. Went on a weekday, Harpers Ferry was busy with school children for a field trip. But…definitely not as busy as the weekend! And all of the kids were very respectful, unlike some others school trips I’ve encountered. Parking is either downtown or 2 miles away at the Harpers Ferry National Park visitor center. You can take a shuttle from there or walk 2 miles along the Shenandoah river to all the historical attractions. You do have to pay to park. Unless you have a national park pass then it’s free at the visitor center, but you have to shuttle or walk.
Kaitlyn N — Google review
John Brown's fort and Harper's Ferry are in the same place. This is a national park so if you have one of those America the Beautiful passes it is free. Otherwise you have to pay per car to get in. We have a pass so I didn't check the prices. This place has tons of great hiking. The Potomac and Shenandoah rivers border it. We went in April and there were tons of gnats and tiny bugs that tried to fly in all your exposed holes. Ugh. Bring a fan or get a pamphlet to fan the bugs away! There is A LOT of walking involved. You need to go to the visitor center and then catch a bus to the city center. They run every 15 mins. Even after you get to the city there is a lot of walking up an incline to see all the small museums, stores, and restaurants. You can drive to the city but there is extremely limited street parking. At 2pm there was a park ranger that gave an hour long educational speech about John Brown. Pretty interesting.

John Brown’s Fort-firehouse, is a historic landmark tied to the famous 1859 raid led by abolitionist John Brown. Although the fort has been moved a few times, the structure has been well-preserved and offers visitors a glimpse into the past. During my visit, the staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and I was allowed to take a photo of my Dalmatians in front of the firehouse, which added a memorable touch to my experience. For history buffs and anyone visiting Harpers Ferry, John Brown’s Fort is a must-see. Despite not standing in its original spot, it remains an enduring symbol of American history and the struggle for freedom.
Elaine A — Google review
Beautiful town. Loved the entire set up. Each store front was turned into a museum. Beautiful scenery
David W — Google review
It’s one of my favorite places to visit. The city is cozy and the exhibits are well curated.
Sarah B — Google review
Lots of history here that I don't recall being taught in high school. It's worth at least a quick visit - a self guided walk through the museum takes about a half hour if you don't watch the videos.
Mike D — Google review
Very cool historical location and the views of the rivers are amazing

St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church is a stunning Victorian Gothic church in Harpers Ferry, dating back to 1833. It boasts stained-glass windows, a dramatic spire, and a stone facade. This historic building survived the Civil War and offers a commanding view of the surrounding mountains and forests. Visitors can also explore Thomas Jefferson's Rock via a footpath from the church. The church is known for its intricate stained glass, solid doors, and historical significance.
We arrived too late to go inside. The church is impressive on the outside. We plan on coming back one day so that we can see the inside. Seeing the church in January with snow made it more special.
Kenny F — Google review
Beautiful church with such history! Came for the 9:30 mass and loved the community and reverence. Visitors definitely need to plan to park off site and walk over.
Elisabeth T — Google review
This is a very beautiful church, and at first I thought it was just a piece of history, but turns out the hold mass every Sunday. A masterpiece of craftsmanship indeed. Went here on a 4h trip and everyone was talking about how beautiful it was even if they weren't Catholic. I'm Catholic and this is a church I would go to. If you ever find yourself in Harper's ferry, come to church here and admire the beauty and the mass.
Broderick Y — Google review
Beautiful church with a commanding view of both rivers. Wonderful stone front, intricate stained glass and very solid doors. Be aware that services seem to only be on Sundays. As others have noted, there is no local parking, you will need to park at the bottom of the hill in one of the lots and walk up.
Angelo S — Google review
Beautiful church that is still active and holds services. Stunning inside! Everything was very well kept. The church is also listed as a historic site. No matter your religion it’s worth going in and seeing this beautiful piece of art!
Deb C — Google review
If you keep walking up the trail you'll find the ruins of the old church
John H — Google review
One of the most beautiful landmark in the history and glad to see it in person. Stone works so perfectly done. And from the parking lot. Can get there from an other beautiful stone stairs. Exercise for the day.

Unfortunately it wasn't open because of the pandemic but it's still stunning from the outside. Also beautiful views to the water. Keep going up the steps to see the ruins of the old church. Worth the hike.

Candy store
Store
True Treats Historic Candy, located in Harpers Ferry, is a unique and research-based historic candy shop that offers a wide range of candies from different eras. The store prides itself on providing authentic and memorable experiences by sourcing selections from experts or original sources. Visitors can find candies dating back to Biblical times as well as modern nostalgic varieties like Sugar Daddies and Jaw Breakers. The shop also features a candy-as-medicine section and uses old recipes to make their wares.
This old-time candy store is so much fun. They have different eras of candy in different parts of the store. We bought Turkish delight, pixie sticks, satellite wafers, and red licorice laces. The first picture is my husband putting a thumbtack on the world map. He placed a tack on Morocco to show a Moroccan visitor was in the store. The name of the candy store is called True Treats. Customer service was amazing. In Harpers Ferry.
Dorothy F — Google review
We love this store. We visited on a weekday evening. They have candies from all over the country. If you can imagine it, they have it. From I love you lollipops to chocolate covered Twinkies on a stick. We bought candied almonds, a mixed bag of candies and a large stick of bubblegum.
Amber C — Google review
I was excited to visit after reading reviews and even drove over 4 hours to get here, but my experience was extremely disappointing. My husband and I were not greeted at all, though other customers who came in after us were warmly welcomed. When I asked about Turkish taffy, staff were dismissive- one woman stomped off, silently pointed and walked away. At checkout, my items were tossed into a bag with no friendliness whatsoever. The whole time, I felt ignored and unwanted, like my business didn’t matter. Employees often forget that it’s paying customers who make their salaries possible. Many candies here can be found at the dollar store or Five below, just repackaged and overpriced, though some items are unique. In the end, my visit was anything but a true treat-it left a bitter taste, like the nastiest candy you’d never want to try again!
Crystal J — Google review
Worth a stop if you have a sweet tooth! They have a wide variety of treats, teas, fudge and even a little cinema in the back playing three stooges the day we visited. The customer service was great and the young lady was very helpful to all the other patrons. Small seating area, dog friendly, and a map on the wall to pin where you are visiting from.
Tia T — Google review
We absolutely loved this candy shop. There is a good mix of their own homemade historic candy as well as favorites from larger brands that you don’t see as often anymore.
Zophael R — Google review
This was such a fun stop. Just to browse, or to get something you forgot they used to sell. It was a trip down memory lane seeing the historic candy and novelties that go back many years. And seeing candies that previous generations enjoyed.
Joe G — Google review
This place is amazing! A variety of vintage candies and homemade stuff, all delicious! You have to see it to believe it! I was in heaven. I'm embarrassed to say that I spent $80 in a candy shop! So worth it, though! Gets a little crowded, but the checkout line moved quickly. Can't wait to visit again sometime!
Amanda S — Google review
This is a super cute shop! Apparently, this is the nation’s only historic candy shop. They had treats from all time periods. They have some freshly baked goods, some throwback candy, and some vintage inspired candy. They randomly have books. We love literacy!

Restaurant
Nestled in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, The Rabbit Hole is a lively gastropub offering a diverse menu of sharing plates, bar bites, and customizable burgers. The cozy and vibrant atmosphere makes it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Specialties include loaded pork fries, vegan hummus, and hearty burgers such as the Blue Ridge burger and grilled chicken burger with avocado and roasted peppers. With a focus on fresh and healthy options, the menu also features gluten-free choices.
This is a popular restaurant/bar in town and justifiably so. Everything we ordered was tasty and well priced. Drink selection was varied with nice local brews available. Service was friendly and attentive. Dog friendly patio. And the indoor bar/restaurant had a very cool and quirky vibe. It is popular and can get very busy. So be l patient if you happen to go on a busy day. This is a five star rating, not because it's a five star Michelin restaurant, but because what they do and what they have they do well and we had zero complaints.
Phillip H — Google review
A delightful eatery with outdoor dining overlooking the train station. The indoor dining had a nice atmosphere, but the weather was too nice to stay inside. The service was good and the food was tasty. We enjoyed the BBQ sandwich and a salad with grilled chicken. We visited during the week and it was not crowded, but I imagine that changes on the weekend. Overall, a nice experience.
Cathie B — Google review
The Rabbit Hole is a fantastic spot in Harpers Ferry with delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. The menu has great variety, and everything is fresh and flavorful. The outdoor seating with views of the river makes the experience extra special. Friendly service and a welcoming vibe — definitely worth a visit!
Harsha J — Google review
A local told us this was the best place in Harper's Ferry for lunch. We tried it and believe that was the correct advice. Easily 5 stars. The restaurant is cozy and charming, decorated with hiking, canoeing, and National Parks signs and the like. Our meals were great. Everyone in our party enjoyed our food and drink. The table service was efficient and polite. The prices were very reasonable. We sat inside on a day when the place was very busy. The outdoor seating would have been just as nice. It had a view of the railroad trestle across the rivers. Either indoor seating or outside, you can't go wrong at Rabbit Hole.
Joe G — Google review
Absolutely phenomenal! The Rabbit Hole Gastropub in Harpers Ferry, WV, is hands down the best dining spot in this historic gem of a town. From the moment we stepped in the place was packed with vintage National Park signs that transported us to another era, and the stunning patio offers unbeatable views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers converging with Maryland Heights as the backdrop. Truly one of the greatest vistas in West Virginia! The food was outstanding! Portions are generous, and flavors are fresh with plenty of options for vegetarians and health-conscious eaters. Service was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming (Megan is a sweetheart)! Shoutout to the staff for making us feel like locals. Dog-friendly patio? Bonus points! Whether you're hiking the Appalachian Trail, exploring the national park, or just passing through, this place elevates Harpers Ferry dining beyond typical tourist fare. We'll be back every time we're in the area. Highly recommend going down The Rabbit Hole!
Cody W — Google review
The absolute best post-hike meal. Huge portions, delicious food, and the most attentive staff. The Rabbit Hole came highly recommended and did not disappoint. We loved the pulled pork fries, hush puppies, Cobb salad, and bbq sandwich. Huge selection of craft beers too. We sat at the bar, but there is ample outdoor and indoor seating available. Busy place but the kitchen got our special orders right and our server was incredible. We will be back!
Kate S — Google review
The Rabbit Hole is one of those places that takes you by surprise, in the best way possible. It’s got a cozy, intimate vibe with an almost hidden gem feel, perfect for a casual hangout or a special treat. But let’s talk about their Bavarian pretzel rods because, honestly, they deserve a review all their own. These pretzels are orgasmic. The Rabbit Hole’s Bavarian pretzel rods get even better with their house-made white cheddar cheese sauce, which is served warm and absolutely divine. The sauce has this smooth, velvety texture that’s just the right balance of creamy and sharp. What really sets it apart, though, is the perfect level of saltiness—it complements the pretzels without overpowering them.

Like the bartender and the vibe of coming here. The drinks are affordable, which is great as that allows me to tip the wait staff. The acoustics in the room serve listeners well when this place has live music.🎵 I’m coming back!

Went here for the 1st time Sunday open mic night for our friends birthday. We had a really good time - the bartender, sound guys, and other staff were super welcoming & kind. The sound was great. We even jammed outside on the patio with new friends after. They had non alcoholic options & N/a beer which was appreciated, since a few of us don't drink. Thank you so much for facilitating a wonderful night! Will definitely be back.

We were on town for a couple of days. We walked over to The Barn after several recommendations. We enjoyed the decor, atmosphere, vibe, service, live music and especially the beverages! We did not have any food Loved the blackberry mojito!
Lorrie C — Google review
Really enjoyed the band, Shorty Slim. The atmosphere is very friendly. When the dogs were allowed to run around inside the bar off the leash, we felt uncomfortable. When the dogs got aggressive with each other under our feet, we were out. Dog friendly on a leash is different than dogs run amok. I wouldn’t let my children run all over the barn causing a distraction for patrons or distracting the band like these dogs disturbed us. Would not go back.

Such an awesome spot!! If I lived in the area I would be a regular customer here. The staff were so kind and welcoming, dining here felt more like eating with family than being served at a restaurant. The food had a very homemade charm and was absolutely delicious. Great gluten-free and vegan options. I'm seriously going to miss this place. You guys rock!

Perfect place to grab a meal after a long hike or bike ride. Everything I’ve had here has been really good and the staff is very friendly and quick. They have a wide variety of options on the menu from junk food vegan to whole food plant based. Lots of gluten free options as well. Wish I lived closer I’d come more often

After a bit of a bummer of a day in Harper’s Ferry (lots of rain), this place saved the day. The rain was finally letting up so we sat outside on the covered porch. Service was quick and casual so great for dining with a toddler. We got a sub sandwich (simple but good), coco ramen (YUM), and a nugget kids meal. The nacho appetizer was really good and one of those “you’d never know it was vegan” types of thing. We are so grateful for a restaurant that is not only delicious but has something we aren’t used to as vegetarians - OPTIONS and a solid kids meal!

One of the best vegetarian restaurants I have been to and pleased omnivores as well! Extensive menu with seasonal offerings. You could eat there every day for a month and still not tried everything great yet! Excellent food and staff. Very helpful and pleasant! Inside seating is limited to about 10 people but there is plenty of outdoor space and the food comes quickly. Definitely give it a try!

This establishment is absolutely AMAZING! The staff are incredibly friendly, the chef’s are rays of sunshine who visit their patrons to ensure the quality of their food, and even the atmosphere is filled with happiness! As far as the FOOD, oh my LORD. This food is beyond delicious! It’s more a dance of flavors that tantalize your mouth with each bite. I’m so impressed that I’ve taken many friends (even non-vegan friends) to dine here and every single one of them returned! There is nothing better than food that’s created with love except HEALTHY FOOD that you wouldn’t know is healthy. It’s guilt free MOUTH WATERING, belly smiling AMAZING! Now that’s fine dining ! Highly recommend to everyone!

I love that there’s a vegan restaurant in my favorite little town. The food and atmosphere are lovely. The pinto beans were also so delicious!

Amazing, highly recommend! We stayed at a nearby Air B&B while visiting the area just to be close to Kelley Farm Kitchen after our veggie friends recommended it. The food was delicious & the staff were friendly. We ate there twice in one week. Husband had the Sourdough Patty Melt & I had the Chick'n Avocado sandwich. Highly recommend even if you aren't a veggie. Do yourself a favor & eat healthy and try Kelley's. Thanks for a great meal!

Established in 1925, the ATC relies on volunteers and staff to maintain the 2,190-mile trail from Maine to Georgia. Headquartered in Harpers Ferry, a significant point along the trail, it serves as a popular spot for hikers to capture milestone photos at the visitors center. The town itself sees an influx of weary backpackers seeking supplies and respite.

I loved this place. The people were knowledgeable and helpful. They are making a nice little walkway and garden that is paved with memorial bricks with different names and messages on them from past hikers. It really gives you a sense of walking through history.

The John Brown Wax Museum in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia is a unique attraction that brings to life the story of John Brown and his infamous raid on the town. The museum features wax displays depicting scenes from Brown's life and his violent exploits, offering visitors an in-depth look at the abolitionist's legacy. Located within a National Historical Park, this museum provides a comprehensive exploration of John Brown's history and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
This place really brings into perspective the cultural and historical significance of John Brown and his sacrifices. Theres a qr code that brings up audio explaining many of the scenes.

an odd little place to stop on your trip to harper’s ferry. entry is $5/person, but you can buy items in their small gift shop which count towards your ticket price. the worker told me the building is for sale, so go see it while you still can!
Annabel — Google review
It was a fun time at this museum. While walking through the historical park there are plenty of informational plaques, but this took it to a new level. This was an immersive experience where you could visualize the events of John Brown's life, instead of just reading about them. My group loved this museum and we were so glad that we were able to go to it.
Elijah C — Google review
Not the highest quality wax figures, but the displays are very well done. The history lesson is also very interesting and is something most people likely don't know about American anti-slavery history. Very informative. Harper's Ferry is home to a lot of historical attractions and this is just one of them. $7 for adults, $6 for seniors/veterans. Six floors of displays depicting the life of John Brown and his anti-slavery raid on Harper's Ferry.

Amazing place! Kitsch in the best way. Friendly staff. JB Wax Museum>All the Smithsonians combined. $5 admission is deal of a lifetime. I would've paid my life savings to see Waxie JB.
Bill K — Google review
A good history lesson, and still just as creepy as I remember it being when I was in the fourth grade. My kids (10, 12, & 14) all enjoyed it. The upkeep of the building left much to be desired. There was an strong mildew odor throughout, despite obvious attempts to cover it with air fresheners. Lots of peeling wall paper and floors in need of cleaning or repair.
Kim B — Google review
The displays are in disrepair, the lighting is very bad such that you can hardly read the plaques on the wall, and and worst of all it's just kind of shabby. To boot, the displays aren't even that interesting. Several of the things on the wall seem just copied from the internet and printed with an inkjet printer. The best wax figure, John Brown with crazy eyes thrusting a bayonet, is visible from the street. You won't learn anything or get a good perspective on anything that you can't get from one of the many free museums around. If you like creepy wax dolls though you're in for a treat.

Such a cute and quaint place. My wife and i stopped in the morning and got 2 lattes 1 pumpkin and 1 sf caramel, and they were awesome. The service was really fast and friendly. They have a neat little gift shop, and we had to get the room spray and candle because it smelled so so good. They offer lots of sandwiches and ice cream options. I wish I had to try. I highly recommend this place and will 100 percent be back

I had an amazing experience at this cozy little coffee and bakery shop! The coffee was outstanding, especially the blueberry-flavored coffee and the affogato—both were delicious. The shop itself is super cute and inviting, with a wide variety of drinks and food to choose from. Plus, there’s a charming gift shop inside, which adds a nice touch. Definitely a spot worth visiting!

A good place for a cup of coffee in Harpers Ferry I recently visited Harpers Ferry with family. As with most trips we went in search of the history, the sights and a good cup of tea and coffee for the various members in the group. The town is part of the park service and most people park at the visitors center and take the shuttle bus into the town. There is a parking lot but quickly fills up because of the popularity. This shop is about a block and a half up high street from John Brown’s fort. Battle Grounds Bakery and Coffee is like an old time shop with the hand-painted sign outside to wood floor, brick entryway, and swinging screen door. It seemed a welcoming and friendly spot from the moment you walk in. The staff was friendly and helpful, at teh counter located near the back of the space. Several in our party ordered coffee and a few ordered tea. There were plenty of choices for our different tastes. You can get a simple drip coffee, a cold brew, or an espresso drink like a cappuccino or latte. All the drinks were made fresh. They also offer fresh breads, muffins, croissants, and cookies that is baked daily. If you happen to be in the area and want to get a good cup of coffee, then I would recommend that this is a good place to stop and get a caffeinated beverage of your choice. Enjoy it as you walk around the city and enjoy the town.

Despite the government’s snow warning shutting down most restaurants and shops, this café remained open and we catch before closing , welcoming us with warm hospitality. Their dedication to service, even in challenging conditions, truly stood out. We ordered a latte, hot chocolate, and a chocolate chip cookie. While we didn’t sit inside, the cozy atmosphere, beautifully decorated for Valentine’s Day, added to the experience. The hot chocolate had a rich, satisfying density, and the cookie, though a bit heavy, was generously portioned and delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, making us feel valued despite our small order. While the food wasn’t exceptional, the overall experience and warm ambiance made this place worth visiting. A solid 4-star spot that deserves recognition for its dedication to customers!

A tasty breakfast sandwich and juice. It was too chilly to sit outside, so we ate at the counter. In addition to coffee, they offer a variety of bakery items, lunch sandwiches and salads along with ice cream. They do close at 5. Parking in Harpers Ferry is very limited, with some pay parking near the train station.

Visited back in August while enroute to Maine from Louisiana - To start it off, this was probably the best iced coffee I had drank in years. While waiting on my sandwich to be made, I had already consumed maybe half of the IC, and I made the decision to get another for the road since it was so fantastic - but the incredible service at this establishment offered a free refill on my iced coffee (I've never had that offered anywhere else), and to beat the band the homemade sandwich ended up having some of the best bacon I've ever had. Maybe I was just really hungry when I visited here, but I truly think the food + service is some of the best I've found in my travels around the country. Love Harpers Ferry! Thanks for making the experience great.

Hiking Trails
Maryland Heights is a popular hiking destination in Harpers Ferry, offering breathtaking views of the town and its surroundings. The trail, though challenging at times, leads to an observation point with elevated views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. It's a pet-friendly area, but keep in mind that dogs are not allowed on the free shuttle bus.
Excellent place to come for a hiking. We'll organize a very clean hike trail. It's all flat paths about 15 to 20 feet wide. Steep hill going up ND pleasant slope coming back. Except for the slope going uphill, all the rest is a breeze. It's hard and takes all.out of you but keep it to study and before you know it you are up. No food or water is available on the trail. 3.5 hours are going up and 45 minutes coming down. Beautiful view from the top.
Priya.kapurnest P — Google review
Maryland Heights Trailhead is a great trail to hike it's well maintained and great landmarks to see and the view of Harpers Ferry from the lookout just splendid, on this trail it's a bit difficult to find a parking lot near the town and the climb up to the mountain has a hard steep bring enough water and rest ones in a while. Seeing the train pass by was amazing stay safe and look out on the trails.
Sal T — Google review
Maryland Heights is a must-do hike! We parked at the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center and took the free shuttle down to the trailhead, which made parking super convenient. The hike took us about 4 hours round trip and was medium intensity with a good amount of elevation — an excellent cardio workout. The view from the top is stunning, overlooking Harpers Ferry and the rivers. We carried food and had a picnic at the summit, which made the experience even more special. Many nice restaurants with the river view at Harper’s Ferry after the hike. Overall, a fantastic hike with convenient access, great exercise, and a very rewarding finish.

incredible views. all up hill on the way up, but all down on the way back. can be short or long depending on if you do the loop with multiple vistas. we ate 1st so we didnt feel like hiking more than we needed. great place for photos. the view honestly doesn't even feel real its so dang picturesque
Kaylin M — Google review
It was a bit confusing to find the walking path. We'd been here once before, and the bridge was closed. There was no sign when we walked across the bridge, so I was confused and didn't know which way to go. So, we came back again today, ready to hike! The stairs were open for us to pass through the pathways. So now I'm telling you! 1. Set your map to the "railroad parking path." It's in the old town, behind The Rabbit Hole restaurant. 2. Then, walk across the bridge, and you'll see the stairs going down; turn left. 3. Keep walking until you see the sign. Cross that small bridge (I have a picture). 4. Then you can enjoy your walk. Going up took me 95 minutes, and walking down took about 30 minutes. 5. It's quite steep, so grab a stick on the way up. Prepare yourself! I wanted to challenge myself, so I walked, and woah! I made it! Today it's very windy, 40 km/hr. Okay, enjoy! I went on Halloween day 2025.
Ratcha J — Google review
Excellent hike with phenomenal views if you make it to the top! It's not a trivial hike - there are steep grades and a lot of rock towards the end so you should bring water and a solid pair of shoes. The trail is wide at most points for big groups and pets but narrow in a few points by the artillery battery site where you might want long pants in case of ticks. The real reward is the overlook at the end. It tends to get crowded (we went on a Monday) so be prepared to wait for pictures.
Mike D — Google review

Embark on the Ghost Tour of Harpers Ferry for a spooky and educational evening in this historic town. Learn about the haunted tales of Civil War soldiers and sightings of John Brown's ghost from an entertaining and informative guide who is also a historian. The tour provides a unique way to experience Harpers Ferry at night, offering creepy stories alongside in-depth historical explanations. Despite the potential for stormy weather, the tour ensures an engaging experience by accommodating guests indoors when necessary.
Great way to experience harpers ferry at night, as most businesses and even restaurants are close right as it starts, not only will you hear some creepy stories you will learn lots of history as the guide is also a historian, so much of what you learn during the daytime at the museum is further explained and explored during the tour making it educational and fun. The guide is great at what he does and has a loud voice that projects well, he even brings some singing into the tour and gets everyone to interact. many of the stops have curbs or stone walls you can sit at if needed, you will need to go up some steep steps to get to the church.

Fantastic tour with the perfect mix of history and spooky stories! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining - and she had a beautiful singing voice! This was our first day in Harper’s Ferry and wrapping it up with this ghost tour was really the perfect way to end it.

This was a fantastic experience! Amelia was incredibly knowledgeable and experienced and even answered some questions I had about Saint Peter's Church, where the tour meets. It was very reasonably priced at $18 per person, so for my wife and I it cost $36. Lasted about an hour and a half. It was the highlight of our trip to Harper's Ferry and I highly recommend it to anyone who decides to visit the town. BTW, make sure you take pics in Hog Alley, my wife got lots of orbs there.
Harry S — Google review
We had a great time. Cash only, call ahead to reserve, meet up at the church, just about 2 hours. The walk is down then back up the hill. It's a good way to see town quiet as opposed to seeing it with the day tourists ... The downside is that everything else is closed at night. The tour caters equally well to "true believers" and casual tourists and is "kid friendly" even when touching on adult themes. Our guide led some singing, too.

Great tour. My 2 kids, wife, and I enjoyed it this past Saturday. You learn a lot about the history of Harpers Ferry too. One thing that was interesting was pictures we took of a green neon glow on Hog Alley. The same thing happen to someone else that I know who took pictures at the same spot. His looked like a person holding a green lantern. I attached my pictures. I would share his pictures if I had permission because you can really see a ghost starting on the roof and then walking across the street with same green color as in my photos, but looked like a person holding a lantern.

At the moment I entered the establishment, I was greeted by a sweet young lady (whether barmaid or publican, I did not ask) who we found to be very knowledgeable and personable. She proceeded to relate to us the events of John Brown’s raid and it’s affect on the community, as well as the period up to and after the war, and how her pub was often central to these events – as a simple escape from the turmoil over a shot of whiskey, provide for social gathering to debate such events, or even to conspire plans to aid in the advancement of one side or the other. Warning, be under no illusions that her charm and attraction means she is simple or meek – she can quickly quench a drunken brawl, as well as pummel the best in an aggressive game of checkers.

Country Café is a charming, family-owned and operated restaurant located in the heart of Harpers Ferry. Since 2014, it has been serving up delicious American breakfast and lunch options, including foot-long hot dogs. The cozy atmosphere is accentuated by local artwork on the walls and a welcoming vibe created by owners Lynn and Mark McDonough. If you're in the mood for classic American comfort food or a hearty breakfast, this café is the place to be.
If you're hungry and gearing up for a day of adventure, this is the place to be! I indulged in the café breakfast and was blown away by the enormous French toast, paired with incredible potatoes and perfectly cooked bacon. I even added two extra eggs, and it was all delicious! 🥞 Country Café – Harpers Ferry, West Virginia 🥞 If you ever find yourself in Harpers Ferry, do yourself a favor and stop by the Country Café — it’s everything a good breakfast spot should be: cozy, welcoming, and downright delicious! My friend and I stopped in for breakfast and ordered the French toast, bacon, and eggs — absolute perfection. The French toast was golden with just the right touch of sweetness, the bacon was crispy, and the eggs were cooked exactly the way we asked. You could taste the love in every bite. ❤️ What made the meal even better was the atmosphere. The place feels like stepping into a warm hug — friendly faces, the smell of fresh coffee, and locals chatting over their morning paper. We even made a new friend, Ralph, a local who eats there every morning and made us feel right at home. It’s the kind of place that reminds you what small-town America is all about — good food, good people, and genuine hospitality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars — can’t wait to go back! #HarpersFerry #CountryCafe #SmallTownCharm #GoodFoodGoodPeople #BreakfastDoneRight

This place was packed and had a full waiting area on Sunday morning. Solid diner vibe but mom and pop atmosphere. Servers were great...super attentive and kept the coffee coming. Loved their motto - see pic. Meats lovers omelet was just that...very tasty. Cinnamon roll was hit and fresh and plenty of icing and cinnamon. A little small for the price but quality.

A decent restaurant with good food and a nice staff but slow service This restaurant is easy to find in Harpers Ferry as it is right across from the train station on the lower road. It has a laid-back feel and an open door. The restaurant has two floors with self-seating, and we chose a table on the lower level. It was cool inside, though the doors were open to the outside, which added to the casual atmosphere. There only seemed to be one waitress handling all the tables, and while she worked hard and did a great job, the service was understandably slow and the tables were not cleaned very quickly once people left. One thing that stood out to me was how pet-friendly the place is—there was even a dog at a table on the porch. The menu offers classic American fare, like sandwiches and burgers. I had a BLT with fries, and both were very good. They were fresh, well-made, and satisfying. The prices were reasonable with most entrees being between $14 and $20 and my BLT was $12 . It’s not fast service, but if you have a little time and want a relaxed, friendly environment, Almost Heaven is a nice choice for a meal in Harpers Ferry.

The menu offers typical pub-grub, and burger and wings we had were very good. The service was very friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was enjoyable. All-in-all a good place to grab a bite to eat.

Anyone visiting Harper's Ferry needs to stop here and have their Pub Burger. This is one of the best burgers going. Paired with a local brew hit the spot! Service was fantastic. Atmosphere reflected old Harper's Ferry.

Our server was amazing young lady doing her best as the only server here. She was doing almost everything from what I could see besides cooking. There had to be about 8 tables and she was attentive to them all. It is a cool building. The food was very mediocre. Pub Burger/ fries my husband ordered and Fried green beens/spinach dip for me. Not sure what type of dip that was but I had better from the grocery store.
Tia T — Google review
We ordered drinks and an app to start. Our server brought us the wrong beer, but it ended up being tasty anyways so we said nothing. The app we ordered was the crab dip. The dip and bread were good but served in a styrofoam cup that was microwaved and burned so the whole bottom of the dip was gross. We were going to order entrees but our server never came back. We sat there with our empty plates and drinks at the edge of the table for quite a while. Our server to not be found and the other server completely ignoring us, even after trying to flag her down. This was an early Sunday morning and it was not that busy. We're really patient (prob too much, tbh) and this was bad enough for me to leave a review. I know I would at least like to have known about microwaved styrofoam $15 crab dip ahead of time. There's better places to eat next door, on either side.

One of the best in Harper’s ferry! Kid friendly - dog friendly outside - plenty of seating. Sitting at the bar guarantees best service.

We had such a great experience at Almost Heaven in Harpers Ferry! Our server, Dominique, was absolutely wonderful — super friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. The drinks were really good, but honestly, the food stole the show — everything came out fresh, hot, and full of flavor. You can tell they take pride in what they serve. Big thanks to Dominique for making our visit even better — we’ll definitely be back!

The Ruins of St. John's Episcopal Church are a captivating sight just a short distance from the tavern, offering a glimpse into history. Dating back to 1852, this fieldstone structure served as a hospital and barracks during the Civil War and was heavily damaged by fire. Situated on a grassy bluff overlooking the rivers below, the crumbling walls and windows create an evocative scene. Accessible via the Appalachian Trail, visitors can explore this historical site nestled amidst nature's reclamation.
We visited here in January. Snow was everywhere. It made it a little bit more special. The view of the town was impressive.

Located between St. Peter's church and Harper Cemetery along the Appalachian Scenic Trail this is a nod to what used to be. We don't find "ruins" like this very often in the States and it was certainly an interesting site. Worth the time to go see and try to image what was based on what is remaining.

Interesting ruins that are worth a few minutes stop, particularly if you’re already walking up to Jefferson rocks. Very quick walk up to these from town.

Super cool ruins. Just a short walk up some stairs from the main town of Harpers Ferry, back behind the new church, but it's not a whole hike to get to it or anything.
Alexis R — Google review
Very cool ruins of the old church. Beautiful views to the water and the new church. Definitely worth the hike.
Pia B — Google review
Going up the Appalachian Trail footsteps to reach an entry point to the Appalachian Trail proper, several historical sites will be passed. Of these, the ruins of St. John's Episcopal Church may be seen. Like many other sites throughout Harpers Ferry, nature has retaken most of the grounds. For what remains of the ruins, numerous broken entrances are on each side that provide a satisfying sense of enjoyment to walk through.

The John Brown Museum offers a captivating journey into the compelling story of the 1859 raid led by the passionate abolitionist. Through a variety of engaging exhibits and artifacts, visitors can gain insight into the significant events that unfolded in Harpers Ferry and their enduring impact on American history. The museum showcases interactive displays in Lower Town, providing an immersive experience for those seeking to understand this pivotal moment.
Free admission and worth the one hour. I learned a great deal about John Brown, who is best remembered for his vigorous opposition to slavery and his doomed raid of Harpers Ferry to further his cause. He was captured during the raid and later executed for instigating it. His tactic might have been controversial but there's no denying the righteousness of his anti-slavery stance.
G A — Google review
Very well done and free museum! Never knew about John Brown or the battle at Harper’s ferry. May all of the souls lost rest in peace
Guten M — Google review
Fascinating museum about John Brown's raid. Highly recommend a visit and suggest taking the time to watch the videos. Parking is limited so catching a free shuttle from the National Park's visitors center is a good idea.
Sam T — Google review
The museum was very educational but quite small. They had exhibitions that described the history and the controversies quite well. Unfortunately, some of the videos did not play, perhaps as a result of staff shortage. It was clearly worth a visit for those interested in history from this time period.
Peter E — Google review
Very thought provoking museum that challenges the viewer what would you do before, during and after abolitionist John Brown’s raid. Some of the displays needed rebooting (we visited during the Federal shutdown but this modest little museum was still open to the public). The entrance is on the side and not easily visible but just keep walking around you’ll find the small door open. Read the displays & watch the videos, the loop takes a while so come back to it after reading about the history & political climate of the time. I’m visiting from California and also visited where John Brown’s wife was buried (Madrone Cemetery, Saratoga, CA). Can you imagine the conviction and courage it took to sacrifice one’s family for the freedom of one’s beliefs? The history is just proof that America is built on protest, debate and rebellion that started with the British Parliment Stamp Act in 1765. We Americans like to question authority and whether if you believe the Daughters & Sons of the Confederacy"faithful slave" narrative or Pearl Tatten, daughter of a Union soldier & African American we can all agree that America was built on protest and independent beliefs of what it means to be free.
Lynne M — Google review
Awesome way to spend the day wandering around. A decent amount of exhibits were closed but there was still plenty to do. The views were amazing. Definitely bring your walking shoes. The cost is $20 per car which felt like a lot but at the end of the day it is what it is. You park and take the shuttle down to the grounds. I definitely recommend.

Lower Town Harper's Ferry is a charming area with Victorian homes, 150-year-old row buildings housing modern amenities, and living history museums. The confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers can be seen from two bridges leading into town, offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors can take an hour and a half tour to explore historic sites and buildings with reported ghostly phenomena.
You have many options to travel this year, but standing amid Harper's Ferry was a highlight of my year. The reenactors are knowledgeable, the gift shops are economically priced, bathrooms are available in the major stores, and West Virginia remains strong and independent. Ask a park staff member if you have questions.

Lots of walking, not much cell service which makes it hard to pay for parking. Many shops closed, we were in off season. Beautiful shops, scenery and history to take in. Worth stopping and plan to visit in season to take on the full experience.

As only part of the entire town, the Lower Town district of Harpers Ferry has plenty to offer. From rich history found in museums, exhibits, and natural attractions to the warm welcoming of local businesses, Lower Town certainly excels in providing visitors quality experiences. Little vehicle traffic is present which allows for foot traffic to be plentiful. Along every street on both sides, wide sidewalks are also available.

The Anvil Restaurant is a cozy outpost located in a historic district, offering a low-key setting and ample seating. The menu features hearty dishes such as crab dip, onion soup, pulled pork sandwiches, smoked mac and cheese, and smoked chicken with kielbasa. The restaurant also surprises guests with non-alcoholic beer options. Visitors can enjoy the old-time feel without any negatives while sitting on the porch and experiencing great A/C and a full bar.
Great pulled pork sandwich, smoked right in front of the restaurant. In fact, I smelled it while driving by and just had to turn around and have lunch here. My waitress Jessie was very pleasant and helpful, and the place is very cozy with ample seating and a nice bar. They actually surprised me with a few non-alcohol beers to choose from. If you're in the area and can't deal with finding a parking spot down the street in the historic section, you can't beat The Anvil (open Thur-Sun, I noticed). They also have PLENTY of parking.

Before I go in to it originally being from MD I must confess I’m very particular when it comes to crab cakes. The crab cakes are not what I saw on other reviews, lots of filler with mostly shred and some lumps. The smoked chicken from the bbq pit was very moist and tasty. The service was ok but not very attentive even though it wasn’t that busy. The ambiance is great and what you would expect from a historical district. I gave a 4 overall I recommend the smoked chicken but I do not recommend the crab cake if you are from MD.

We ate here about 16 years ago and decided to come back with out family on New Years 2021. It was a bit different from what I remember; for instance, instead of real dishes and glasses, they use paper now. Prices are a bit steep to be served on paper plates. Overall, food was good. Waitress was very Friendly and down to earth. Nice ambiance.

The service was very good.. the food was very good. We had 2 of the specials one was cheese raviolis with sausage spinach mushrooms beans and peppers sauce ...the other was a steak topped with crab ceviche both meals came with salads. The steak came with mashed potatoes and green beans. We both had soup he had french onion and I had the tortilla soup . I also had dessert which was strawberry short cake layer in the evening. My drink was an Italian martini. It was a great evening out with fantastic food

I had an absolutely amazing lunch at the Anvil in Harper's Ferry! The BBQ sandwich was really good and the lava cake was delicious! It was a great break from hitting the trails and not far away from the entrance into the National Park!

So the place itself is like a toss between a historic and sports bar. The reason I give it five stars is the food, in particular.... the WINGS. I’ve had great buffalo wings else where but these were the best non-buffalo wings I’ve had thus far. The wings are smoked which makes them amazing. The blue cheese is home made and super super chunky. You can really taste the smokiness of the wing and they’re still juicy on the inside. Moving on from the wings, the crab balls were delicious. Known for their crab meat, they were very tasty and don’t have to much filler (breadcrumbs, etc). The brussel sprouts were amazing and covering in a vinaigrette and capers. Back to the wings, they’re were so good we order another round.
Timothy D — Google review
Had a great time at this family friendly place. Honestly found it because of the smoker out front and enjoyed the smoked mac and cheese and the smoked chicken and kielbasa. The pulled pork and other food items were tasty. The place has great A/C and a full bar and seems like the kind of place you want to see start happy hour around 3pm, sit on the porch and enjoy the rest of the night. Old time feel without any of the negatives. Bathrooms and tables and things were all very clean. Staff was friendly and one of them is a Jeeper (like me). Plenty of off street parking. We were warned by a friendly neighbor that the local cops are sticklers for tickets around fire hydrants. Go here for some friendly atmosphere (games playing on the TVs) and good fresh food and you’ll leave with a smile!
Deepak J — Google review
Great service! Our food came out very quickly. The pulled pork was very nice, the ribs was flavorful although it wasn't fall-off-the-bones tender. I wish the crab soup was cream-based instead of tomato-based.

Got lunch here with friends after hiking to the Harper's Ferry overlook. Great serving size and our orders came with chips and salad. Amazing service, very friendly and got our food to us quickly. Went back later in the afternoon for ice cream. Hit the spot both times, highly recommend!

Looking for a place for lunch during a day trip to Harpers Ferry, we somewhat stumbled upon Cannonball Deli but were glad we did. They have both indoor seating (off the High St. entrance) and outdoor seating (off the Potomac St. entrance). Our server was very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. We especially recommend the Chapli Kebab Wrap and the Gyro Salad, the latter coming with a very generous portion of gyro meat.

Enjoyed a tasty kebab wrap at this quaint eatery in Harper's Ferry. They were super busy, so food did take a little while, but the small staff was attentive and tried to keep me informed. Generous portions and good value!
Bill W — Google review
My wife and I went here and ordered a gyro and a chapli kabob wrap. Both were amazing! Then we each had some ice cream which we also enjoyed. We went to the Cannonball deli because of their unique offering for the area. Most places were way crowded, loud, and were serving expensive hamburgers and beer. If that is your thing great. It’s not ours. This place was quiet, the service friendly and attentive, and the food delicious. If you like some variety of food in a place where you can really enjoy a quiet conversation with your company then give this place a try. It is tucked away like a hidden gem, but when you find it enjoy its sparkle.

Best food, best service, best prices! They have both indoor seating and an outdoor patio, which, unfortunately, we did not notice.. We ordered a Philly cheesesteak sub - it came with chips and a very fresh salad. The roll was warm and perfectly crispy! I even came back later for ice cream because they have the best prices around!🍦🥙 Thank you!!:)
Ludmila E — Google review
Our group ate a burger, lamb gyro and chicken gyro. Burger looked like it was a frozen patty, but the lamb and chicken were cooked perfectly. The gyro itself was missing flavor from some of the things I typically enjoy such as cucumber, onion and tomato. I ended up putting the side salad on the gyro filling and it was excellent together. Service was good/fine. All in, good deal for price to food ratio but will probably try somewhere else next time.
Allison E — Google review
Food is fresh and tasty. My daughter and I stopped for a quick lunch after beautiful hike. The place is so cozy we ended up having long lunch. We both ordered falafel wrap. The side salad is tasty, just take it easy on the dressing. Dressing is tasty, but bit sour to our liking. The tortilla used for the wrap is thick and grilled with cheese on top, going perfectly with the filling.

A beautiful campus to visit for civil right history Storer College campus is located about ½ mile away from the lower town of Harpers Ferry. There is a lot of history here. It was founded in 1867 to educate freed slaves and later hosted the 1906 Niagara Movement meeting that helped lead to the NAACP. The college closed in 1955, but the old campus buildings remain and are now used by the National Park Service. The campus sits up on Camp Hill, above the lower town of Harpers Ferry. It’s just a few minutes’ drive from the shops and museums below, and there is parking by the buildings. It is much easier parking here than trying to squeeze into the lower town lots. I think the entire campus is one of those places that feels quiet but full of meaning. Walking around the grounds, we enjoyed the views as the buildings still look to be in good condition. If you’re visiting Harpers Ferry, it’s worth the short trip up the hill just to stand where so much of the struggle for education and civil rights once happened but be aware that if you want more information you may be better served to go to the museum in the lower town or research on your phone as there are not a lot of informational displays around the campus and the museum seems to have a lot more data on the site.

The Point at the Rivers is a breathtaking destination where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers converge, framed by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. This historic site marks John Brown's crossing into Harpers Ferry and features remnants of an original bridge from the 1830s, along with significant Civil War history. A great viewing point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers confluence. This overlook at Harpers Ferry where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet is definitely worth the stop as it has a lot to offer for a simple viewing point. First, from this spot you can see both rivers coming together. The view offers some great opportunities for excellent pictures. Second, behind you is the historic town of Harpers Ferry. Third, a few feet back from the overlook is a shady spot with several informational signs about the confluence. Fourth, to the right and down a set of stairs is the path to the water. Fifth, left and up the path is the walking path across the bridge. Along the viewing area there are plenty of informational signs that explain the history and geography. It is up the hill from the town proper and may be difficult for the mobility challenged since it is not a smooth road surface path to get to the viewing area. The view is not just of the rivers. You can see the supports for the old bridge and, if you time it right, some people tubing or rafting down the river. I think, it’s one of the highlights of the park and a great place to pause and take in the scenery.

The view from The Point is spectacular! It’s a great location to see the two rivers converging, and you can also see the mountains and the bridge to the Maryland Height all from this point. Existing as perhaps what is the most picturesque viewpoint in historic Harpers Ferry, The Point is an absolute stopping point for visitors. In addition to the converge of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, the surrounding view of the town, two train lines, a widespread view of the surrounding mountains, and the monumental view of the Maryland Heights trail mountainside mountainside are also visible from this one standing point. Here, multiple signage are available to give further details regarding the convergence and town. Other tourist inclusions such as distance markers are also present.

Beautiful place to see the confluence of the Potomac and Shanandoah Rivers. You can also see the effects of the train derailment that happened earlier last year. You can't hike to the other side of the river anymore through that trail which also aligns with the Appalachian Trail but you can still get nearby and you can always drive to the other side.

You can see beautiful views from all sides at the Point at the Rivers. The high winds offer refuse from the summer heat, but hang on to your hat and hair or cover up. There are benches in the open and tucked away near the trees. Nestled in the heart of Harpers Ferry, The Coffee Mill is a charming and inviting spot to unwind. This cozy cafe offers an array of delectable treats, including top-notch espresso and a variety of mouthwatering meal options such as chicken salad sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken tenders, apple pie, cinnamon buns, and an assortment of cookies. Visitors rave about the delicious burgers with perfectly toasted buns and fantastic black bean burger.
Went here for burgers at lunch. The burgers were not huge, but they were wonderful. Buns were toasted, and the black bean burger was fantastic. Fries were sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning and were perfectly fried. Had an iced mocha at a reasonable price. Saw people with sundaes - those sundaes looked good. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. There seem to have been some older, rough reviews, and I’m glad we didn’t look at those first before trying the place.

Carrot cake was good, but can't recommend the latte nor 'mango smoothie', which hadn't seen real fruit. Worst of all, the amount of single-use cups, plates and cutlery this place provides/uses is absolutely horrible. And they don't even bother to recycle the tons of waste they produce.

Nice. A la mode desert & such. Good selection and tasty. Pista flavor wasn't nice.

Would not recommend this place. We came in for custard and coffee. When we asked for some they rudely told us they don’t sell custard despite the sign on the building that states they do. They could have simple said sorry we don’t. We also got a coffee and asked for oat milk and the cashier again was rude in stating they didn’t have it. The entire time we were greeted with mean looks for what reason I have no clue. The coffee was burnt and watery as well. You can find better coffee and people who are not unnecessarily nasty else where.

Stopped here to grab some ice cream, ended up leaving with ice cream and a hat! Super friendly staff, were allowing people a small sample of 1 flavor since they had some more strange ones like midnight caramel which is what I got! Would recommend for their ice cream at least, didn't try the food or coffee.

Absolutely do not recommend this place. It is an unapologetic tourist trap. This place is insanely overpriced for what they serve. Mango smoothie tasted like a mango jell-o slushie. The ice chunks were so big I was chewing on them. The fact that it was $8.99 is crazy. We also got an iced tea that was filled all the way to the top with ice. Also very expensive for tea. We asked for at least a partial refill of the tea and staff ignored us until we left. We were very kind and respectful and also tipped so the experience was very disappointing.

Small unassuming cafe that we stumbled uponin Harper's Ferry. The service was amazing, coffee was excellent, and food was sensational. The double stack burger was delicious, the chicken tenders were tender, and the fries were perfect. Next time we will come back to try some of their desserts!

They refused to fill up our water bottle after we brought tea and cake. They directed us to Battle Grounds Cafe who are were nice enough to spare some tap water. Take their own advice and go to Battle Grounds instead.

Cemetery
Sights & Landmarks
Harper Cemetery is a historic burial ground located in Harpers Ferry, with graves dating back to the late 18th century and continuing to the present day. It is a significant part of the town's living history, with many local residents having family members interred there. The cemetery features a walking path constructed as an Eagle Scout project, making it accessible for visitors to explore its several hundred gravesites.
Just past St. Peter's Church along the somewhat lengthy Appalachian Trail staircase, Harper Cemetery is home to several hundred graves dating back to the 18th century to current years. There is a good amount of land devoted to the site, with plenty of space available for future gravesites. Some time ago, an Eagle Scout project helped construct the beneficial walking path from lower to higher elevated areas. Grounds are maintained nicely, and the site is as nice as one can anticipate from a cemetery.
A L — Google review
Beautiful and scenic place. It is adjacent to Jefferson Rock and can be accessed via a walk path. The land was set aside by the town's founder, Robert Harper. There are no notable tombs to check out but the commanding views of Harpers Ferry and the surrounding mountains and rivers make a visit worth it.

Worth the hike, if you start at the bottom of the hill in lower town! At the top, there is a historic cemetery that is well-maintained. The view of the Shenandoah & Potomac Confluence is unmatched from any other angle. You can see “Jefferson Rock,” where Thomas Jefferson stood one time, on the climb up. Dog friendly.

Historical cemetery at the top of the hill and along the Appalachian Trail. Prominent area families and Robert Harper of Harper's Ferry fame buried here. Interesting to walk the grounds, read and admire the craftmanship of the headstones.

Beautiful cemetery on a hill. Most graves are from the 1700, 1800, and 1900’s. There are some graves from the 2000’s. Definitely worth the walk up from Harpers Ferry.

Beautiful historic cemetery with great views down to the confluence to the Potomac and Shenandoah River. Lovely spot to sit and let your thoughts wander!
Kylena C — Google review
A wonderful old cemetery with a great view. Even though it has graves dating back to the late 18th Century, new burials still take place there. It’s important to remember that other visitors you see may be visiting the recently deceased so please be respectful. Likewise, many of those buried are the family members of local residents. Like much of Harpers Ferry, the cemetery is living history. Some interesting things about the cemetery: - There’s a Revolutionary War soldier buried there. His grave was lost for many years and only recently rediscovered during ongoing preservation work. - There are a number of graves belonging to members of several fraternal orders and many of their gravestones feature highly detailed symbolism that makes them very interesting to study. While some of the symbols are still in use, others have been forgotten. Take the time to look carefully as many contain hidden details that may surprise you. - You can be buried at the cemetery. The cemetery website has information about the plots for sale. The trustees of the cemetery also ask that temporary visitors refrain from standing, sitting, leaning or rubbing on the monuments. The exposed location of the cemetery combined with the winter weather and frost heaves cause unseen damage causing some monuments to break very easily. There are efforts underway to stabilize the monuments, but it’s a time consuming and expensive process. While visiting you may see some monuments laying flat on the ground and broken into several pieces. The monuments sometimes break and fall to the ground in one or two large pieces. However those in many pieces are the result of people standing on the fallen parts. Really. Please don’t do that. The restorations cost thousands of dollars and are paid for by donation. Please report any vandalism you witness to the police immediately. The cemetery is NOT part of the National Park and is maintained by volunteers. Please practice Leave No Trace in the cemetery.

Dry Goods Store is a charming glimpse into the past, offering a wonderful experience that takes you back to simpler times. Unlike modern superstores, this small store provides only the basics of needs, reminiscent of how stores were centuries ago. It's like taking a step back in time to witness life in an old town city, making it a favorite stop for many. With its quaint atmosphere and little home store inside, Dry Goods Store offers visitors a unique and nostalgic shopping experience.
Today we have large superstores where you can buy anything imaginable. Way back then you only had small dry goods stores that supplied only the basics of needs.......... This small store exemplifies that. A mark of simpler times.

When in Harpers Ferry, a visit to Bolivar Bread Bakery is a must. This woman-owned artisan bakery in the adjacent town of Bolivar offers an array of freshly baked breads and treats that are simply exquisite. From hearty pretzels to lush focaccia and delightful pesto sourdough, there's something for every palate. The bakery also features challah bread and more.
Friendly staff, many many selections to choose from! I personally had the pepperoni roll, cinnamon roll, biscuits and the ramps with cheddar sourdough. IT WAS ALL AMAZING. We tore into almost all of it immediately. I will deff be back, hopefully with a cart to carry everything out next time 😂🫶 the vibes were good here

We stopped by this place on our way out of town after visiting Harper’s Ferry National Park. It is super cute with friendly staff. If I wasn’t a gluten free person I would have bought ALL their bread, it looked delicious! What we did buy was a selection of their local gourmet groceries! I can’t wait to try my honey sweetened chocolate bar! We also bought some peanut butter and jam and iced tea. Definitely worth a stop if you visit the Harper’s Ferry area.

Very cute little brick and mortar bakery with extremely pleasant and efficient service! Heavenly smells emanate from inside the building half the block down! So many interesting breads to choose from I have the olive and rosemary sourdough bread, which is divine.

Charming small bakery that specializes in bread and some baked goods located in Harper's Ferry. The bread was fresh and tasty and my husband loved the brownie. I have a new obsession... And it's called Bolivar Bakery!! We stopped after a Harper's Ferry hike and thank gawd we did!! We purchased a cinnamon bun, lemon & blueberry scone, and a sourdough rosemary & olive bread OMG!! We are half the loaf last night and I'm eating a quarter by myself for dinner. Literally the best bread I've ever had. I live 40 minutes away and WILL be making trips JUST for Bolivar. Thank you for changing my (bread) life. 💖

While in town for a funeral, my friend gave me a nostalgia tour through Shepherdstown, Charles Town, and Harpers Ferry, where I grew up. One of her first instructions was clear: we have to stop at Bolivar Bread--and she insisted I try the Pretzel Samosa. When we arrived, I had a flashback to when the building used to be King's Pizza. I knew the owner back then and went to school with his kids, so the space already carried fond memories for me. Walking in now, I was immediately impressed--the display of breads, the open kitchen, and the warm, cozy vibe made it feel both fresh and familiar. The service only added to the experience. Everyone seemed genuinely friendly, and the person who helped us was chatty, welcoming, and offered some great suggestions. It made the visit feel personal, and I enjoyed the interaction just as much as the food. We ordered right away. Along with the Pretzel Samosa, I couldn't resist a Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie. The few outdoor tables were full, so we sat on the steps, eating and people-watching. The Pretzel Samosa completely blew me away. I asked for it warmed but worried it might turn tough as it cooled--yet the very last bite was just as soft and perfect as the first. The flavor was out of this world. I often order Aloo Naan back home in Colorado Springs (with potatoes and peas), but this went beyond anything I've tried--the pretzel aspect took it to a whole new level. Honestly, if I could have a dozen shipped to my door, I would. The cookie was enormous, and I nibbled on it for the next few days. It stayed soft, and the brown butter flavor elevated a classic chocolate chip cookie in a way that's hard to put into words. Thank you, Bolivar Bread, for not only the incredible bites but also for keeping the space cozy and welcoming, just like I remember it back in its pizza place days. With great food, warm service, and a nostalgic setting, I'll absolutely be back the next time I'm in town.

THE BEST BREADS AND PASTRIES! We went here both days of our stay and essentially bought one or more of everything. The breads are amazing (crusty outside, soft inside). Hiking area
Located in the historical town, Maryland Heights Trailhead offers a beautiful hike with great views of the town from the summit. The trail is relatively simple, with about three-quarters of the way up and then down for the last quarter. It takes roughly an hour to reach the summit, making it accessible even for those who are not particularly fit.
Beautiful sunrise hike! Parking and “open” time first, since that was what I was worried about going into this. I went for a sunrise hike, as in I wanted to be at the top when the sun came up (not wait for sunrise and then start. The trail’s webpage says it doesn’t open until sunrise, but nothing stopped me from starting early. Also, parking was a question, but the train station is indeed open 24 hours and I didn’t end up paying anything at all. I parked at the train station by 4:30am (only a few other cars parked there), walked to the bridge (ghost town vibes) and across the river (crossed in the dark which is creepy), then found my way to the trail once on the other side. I started up the mountain in the dark (also creepy). I didn’t see anything stirring as the sky started to lighten, but I realized I would’ve been more comfortable with a pocket knife. It looks like the kind of forest that might have at least a black bear, maybe even a mountain lion or something. But it was peaceful! I thought for sure I’d see other people with the same idea because of the holiday weekend and PERFECT weather that morning, but no one was around. This tells me I must’ve been breaking some law or something. Every comment says to get there early, avoid the crowds, avoid the heat, avoid the bugs. There was no one around! No heat, no bugs… just song birds and me. The hike itself was only difficult because I did a strenuous hike the day before. This Maryland Heights trail is mostly like being on a stair master. And when you’re trying to make it by a certain time (sunrise doesn’t wait), you can’t stop to rest. My quads were burning and about to cramp. But I’m getting old and I’m not as active these days. This was only a moderate hike. Once I got to the top it was beautiful! Quiet and peaceful. The falcons weren’t even awake yet. I sat for about 45 minutes, had a snack, took in the sites and fresh air. It was worth the trip! Halfway back down I finally saw another human. Then a couple more, then a couple more. Maybe I really should’ve waited for the trail to “open”? When I got back to the train station around 8am the parking lot was 95% full already. I didn’t have anyone ask me to pay for parking. I have a national park pass, but it stayed in my glove box the whole time. I was already a town over and eating breakfast when the crowds started hitting the trail.

One of the best hikes near Harpers Ferry! The trail is moderately challenging, with a steady incline and some rocky sections, but it’s well worth the effort. Once you reach the overlook, you’re rewarded with an iconic panoramic view of Harpers Ferry, the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, and the surrounding mountains — absolutely stunning, especially during sunrise, sunset, or in the fall. Parking is limited near the trailhead, so be prepared to park a bit farther away or arrive early. Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes, and expect it to be busy on weekends. Overall, a must-do hike if you’re visiting Harpers Ferry — one of the most rewarding views in the area!
San D — Google review
It’s a very nice hike. We parked at the Visitor Center, and then a shuttle takes you to the Old town where you start the hike from. The park was free because of the government shutdown. You do see some strenuous uphill sections but overall good. The overlook was amazing but also crowded for a Saturday. It’s dog friendly. Coming down seems easy. Took us close to 3 hours since we stopped for at least 30 mins at the overlook.
Pallavi S — Google review
Did it kick my butt? Yes. Did I want to quit? Yes. Is it difficult? Heck yes! Did I fell accomplished? You know I did! This will be hard, especially if you're not an active person. Follow the trail and take your time. It's not a race to the top. Its an incline all th way pretty much, except when you are right above it. Then, it's like a rocky path so watch your ankles. I was super proud of myself. People were kind all along the way. If I saw a fork in the road I would just ask someone. You can do this, just one step at a time. Don't carry too much because it will weigh you down.
J P — Google review
We had a picture perfect day to hike with temps in the 70’s and a nice breeze. As 70 year olds we found the hike strenuous, therfore it took us close to 4 hours. It is a constant uphill trail. There should be many more trail markers, and perhaps a couple of benches along the way for us old folks. The final half mile is definitely strenuous with loose rocks, roots, and a huge area of flat boulders that you have to scramble around. The view is definitely nice, but be prepared with the correct footwear, extra water, and even a snack. There are multiple trails, and the park service should do a better job of marking the trails and distance.
Cathie B — Google review
The view at the overlook is well worth the climb. Weather was perfect. The trail is steep. Watch out for root and loose rock trip hazards. Highly recommend the use of trekking poles. The trail is dog friendly, but; please take your pets waste back out with you, we noticed quite a few bags of waste tucked into rocks and tree holes, not cool. To reach the overlook there is a rock scramble, pay attention to your footing. Beautiful views and a nice way to spend a few hours.
Auguste — Google review
parking for this is essentially in town. the road in front is too narrow and all parking along the side was blocked off. that being said, it took us about 2hrs round trip- with tons of time up top taking photos. trail is extremely well maintained. Beautiful panoramic views that seem just unreal.
Kaylin M — Google review
My intention was to hike this trail. 1) There is ZERO parking at the trailhead. You must drive miles into town and find parking either 1) in the EXTREMELY crowded, touristy Harper's Ferry (good luck!), or 2) pay to park at the national park ana take a shuttle bus. Who wants to take a shuttle so a group of 20 can hike up the mountain together? I skipped it and found a less popular trail so I could enjoy nature rather than crowds.

The Light Horse Inn is a charming and historic accommodation located in Harpers Ferry, WV. The inn offers warm rooms and suites, some featuring whirlpool tubs and kitchenettes, providing a comfortable stay for guests. Dating back more than 225 years to the Revolutionary War era, this beautifully restored inn boasts seven suites with picturesque views. The partially updated rooms retain their original charm with exposed brick, creating a delightful ambiance. Guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast tailored to dietary preferences and served by friendly staff.
I think some people fail to realize that this is a historic building so it’s going to have quirks. My partner and I did a one night get away and enjoyed our stay very much. The room is a comfortable size, the bed was very comfy, just wish the pillows were a bit better. Breakfast was phenomenal, with plenty of food. The chef is very informative and pleasant. We do plan to return and will stay in this beautiful historic B&B again.
Stephanie C — Google review
Had an amazing overnight stay at Light Horse. This was our first time here, and will return! Communicated with the inn keepers via email and text, they give you a code and a paper when you arrive for info about your room. Very easy self check-in. Had a surprise in our room of goodies, fruit and a little bottle of bubbly for our anniversary; so thoughtful, thank you! This is a historic property, original flooring and history throughout! Absolutely beautiful. With breakfast, you fill out the sheet in your room and place it in the kitchen for the next day. The breakfast room has your assigned table seating by room number. That was very good also! Had dinner at the restaurant Snallygagers next door and that was really good also! Only downfall, and it has nothing to do with the inn, is it's about a 20 minute walk to Harper's Ferry, and very hilly, so make sure you're prepared. Wasn't a great walk in the stifling heat, but made the best of it. Otherwise I would highly recommend this inn!!! Will definitely be back!

This inn is BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️. Our room, #4 was spacious, clean. The bed was heaven!! Breakfast in the morning was hot and served with a smile. Thank you chef, for the extra to go bags in the morning. This was definitely a highlight on our trip to the c&o canal towpath. There was plenty of space to put our bikes.

The check-in process is very simple, and the location is incredibly convenient. We enjoyed the breakfast, and Megan was helpful and kind. The food was pretty good, but the bakery items were store bought which was kind of disappointing. However, beware of staying here if you are at all allergic to mold. It may have been Suite 5 specifically, but I know mold is common in older buildings. My fiancé had planned for us to stay here for three nights for my birthday, but we ended up leaving after the second night. On our first night, I woke up feeling groggy with a sore throat, which I attributed to allergies and sleeping in a new place. It wasn’t a big deal, and I felt better after getting outside and walking around. The second morning, I woke up with a puffy face, hives on my neck, and another sore throat. At that point, I knew something wasn’t right but hadn’t yet put two and two together. We went about our morning and returned later to the inn. Upon entering the room, there was an undeniable musty smell that was clearly from moisture. It had been rainy and drizzly during our stay, which likely didn’t help the humidity in the room. We heard dripping behind the wall near the bed and I’m guessing there’s mold in the walls or in the ductwork for the individual heat/AC unit in the ceiling. While this didn’t completely ruin our trip, it’s disappointing to pay for three nights and only be able to stay for two—especially since the room wasn’t cheap ($170 per night).
Jalee M — Google review
I woud really like to have had a 5 star experience, but mine was one star. Top experiences - breakfast was good and they accommodated my dietary needs. The charm of the old structure - 300 years old, was lovely. HOWEVER, there was a ceiling leak in our room where water rained down at 6:30 in the morning along a beam in our room. I reached out on phone and email. I got no responses for a day. I had to take out our own garbage from the wastebaskets I used to catch the water myself. I had to put the old large throw rug and soaked towels in the bathtub myself. I had to walk around the entire place and check all the closets I could to get clean towels. Nobody staffs the place unless it's breakfast. The representative told me later the leak was fixed and that we didn't specifically ask for our room to be cleaned up or for a call or email back, and she was contentious in her tone. I asked for a full night's refund, and she instead provided $100 off. My bank account only showed $95, and when I texted her about it, she was contentious once again. Disappointing to be sure. Beware before booking.
Amber M — Google review
Our stay at the Light Horse Inn was a bit underwhelming compared to what we expected. There was no innkeeper or staff on site the entire time we were there, which made the inn feel less warm and welcoming. The room itself had a noticeable smell, and the container of water that was left for us didn’t look like it had been cleaned in a while and was only half full. The plumbing in our bathroom struggled a little (that can be expected with an older house, but is still fixable). There’s also no TV in the room, which might not bother everyone, but it’s something to know before booking. We would have loved to leave our outside bedroom door open to listen to the live music from the barn, but there were so many spider webs, leaves, and other debris that it just didn’t feel comfortable. We did however, enjoy sitting out on the back porch. I truly think if we had stayed for breakfast and met the chef — who so many reviews mention as warm and friendly — our experience might have been different. A friendly presence can make all the difference in a stay like this.
Amber M — Google review
Loved staying at the Light Horse Inn. Megan was a great hostess and made incredible breakfasts. She was helpful and knowledgeable, giving us great tips about the area. The room was spacious and comfortable and the location was very close to town.
Trina P — Google review
We stayed for one night in late October. The Inn was difficult to locate at night as the signage was not prominently displayed. Key room amenities like extra comforters/blankets and pillows were absent. The heating in the room did not work! We never saw the Innkeeper. The breakfast was substantial but nothing special. I don't think we will stay here again.

Historical landmark
Jefferson Rock is a picturesque rock formation near Harpers Ferry, named after Thomas Jefferson who was captivated by the area's beauty. It offers stunning views of the Potomac River and the town of Harpers Ferry. Efforts to preserve this historical site have led to restrictions on climbing for safety reasons. Accessible via a short uphill walk from the main town, it's a must-see attraction for visitors interested in history and natural beauty.
An interesting rock structure. We visited here in January. Snow was everywhere. It made it a little bit more special. There is a nice view of the town & river from here.

Had a nice little hike to Jefferson Rock. There are lots of steps, so be aware of this, if you have a stroller or find steps difficult. From Jefferson Rock, you will be able to view both the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
Kay H — Google review
As one of Harpers Ferry's most notable attractions, Jefferson Rock embodies some greater sense of historical impact that draws visitors to be in its presence. Here, the views of the Potomac River and Harpers Ferry are some of the best. In recent times, efforts to preserve this site have been made, resulting in prohibiting visitors from climbing. The purpose also serves to encourage safety, as being atop the rock is hazardous. Around d the perimeter is a chain to dissuade visitors from encroaching the platform's edge. In addition to the artifact itself, signage is available to read.

Steep but short climb up from historic Harpers Ferry to this worthwhile vista with stunning views of the Potomac, Shenandoah rivers and nearby Harper's Ferry. Be prepared to climb steps and walk by the ruins of a fallen church but the 10 to 15 minute hike is worth the payoff view at the top

If you are hiking the trail or just visiting Harpers Ferry, it is worth the climb and stop to admire the same view that Jefferson did. Great view of the river and the valley. I imagine in the fall it would be more spectacular. Nearby bench to sit a spell.
Angelo S — Google review
I was unsure how far of a hike it would be to reach Jefferson Rock before I went there. So for clarity, if you manage to find parking directly in the town of Harpers Ferry or catch a shuttle bus into town from the visitor's center, it is hardly a hike at all from there. Just up the stairs that run behind the church and passed the old church ruins & it's not too much further back from there. There was another trail into the spot though, so I am unsure how far of a hike it is from wherever that trail begins. Beautiful view from there overlooking the river too!
Alexis R — Google review
Worth the 15-minute hike from Lower Town. President Jefferson stood at this spot more than 200 years ago and was in awe of the view he gave it a glowing review. "You stand on a very high point of land. On your right comes up the Shenandoah, having ranged along the foot of the mountain an hundred miles to seek a vent. On your left approaches the Patowmac, in quest of a passage also. In the moment of their junction they rush together against the mountain, rend it asunder, and pass off to the sea." If you have time, visit the Harper Cemetery nearby, which also offers great views of the area.

We booked a history tour through the HFPA and Andy was our tour guide and he did an excellent job. It was quite chilly that day but Andy still made the tour very informative and enjoyable. Would highly recommend to anyone going to Harper’s Ferry to book a tour through them. I emailed and paid ahead of time, super easy. Tour was private, just my husband and myself. Will return to Harper’s Ferry! Cool town.

The store has a lot of character and a fascinating history, which makes it quite interesting to visit. However, there’s a musty smell that might be off-putting to some. Also, be aware that they charge an extra fee for credit card payments, so it's definitely a good idea to bring cash if you want to avoid that extra charge. Despite these quirks, it’s worth checking out if you appreciate unique shops with a bit of old-world charm. Overall, this is a very cool town with rich history.

What an amazing little town with an amazing history. I wish we could have stayed longer, but we had a long trip back to PA. The little shops, museums, vistas and cafe's make this town a great place to visit. I've always wanted to go here. My family almost gave up because of the limited parking. I think we drove around for 30 or more min. before we found a spot. My advice is park up on the hill near the Storer College Campus and walk down Fillmore Street. The Harper Cemetery is amazing along with St. Peter's Catholic Church. We had lunch at The Rabbit Hole. They had a great beer selection, and they were very accommodating to our dog Stella. Give yourself the entire day to walk around. There's a lot to see.

The gift shop was very nice. Liked the selection, it was well organized and a variety of things to look at, browse, and shop for. I was not happy when I looked at my receipt that there was a credit card surcharge. If you’re going to charge for credit card purchases an extra amount, please notify the purchaser before hand. Thank you.

The store features an assortment of clothing, jewelry, trinkets, and more. Visitors praise the owner for being friendly and knowledgeable about the products. Customers appreciate the unique gifts and items available at reasonable prices. I almost didn’t stop in here, but something told me to wander in — and I’m really glad I listened to my gut. The shop is packed with cool, unique trinkets and handmade items from all over the world. If you’re not careful, you might walk out with way more than you planned (in the best way though 😂). I really love the mission behind the shop and fully support what they’re doing. The employee on duty, Cammie (hope I’m spelling that right), was super kind and helpful. I also hope you get to work in the forest service again someday. It's a shame that our government doesn't care about nature as much as it should. If you’re visiting Harpers Ferry, I highly recommend stopping in here if you get the chance. I definitely will in the future. Oh, and you can purchase stuff online as well from their website. So, even if you can't make it in person, definitely check out their site.

Hiking area
The Connector Trail from AT to Appalachian Trail Visitor Center is a short and accessible portion of the Appalachian Trail, with access points from Rt. 340 or historical Harpers Ferry. It offers a brief hiking experience with historical sites such as the town church, cemetery, church ruins, and Jefferson Rock. The trail is suitable for novice hikers but has narrow paths and some steep elevation.
As part of the Appalachian Trail, this portion is accessible either from Rt. 340 or from historical Harpers Ferry. If visiting downtown and wanting a short hiking experience with a few worthwhile historical sites, the Connector Trail is more than ideal. Along this short path, the town church, cemetery, historical church ruins, and Jefferson Rock attraction will be passed. Generally, this path is accommodating to novice hikers. The path itself is narrow with some moments of steep elevation. It should also be said that some specific spots require climbing more so than stepping, such as utilizing large rocks to move forward.

We took the connector off the Appalachian Trail. We were a little surprised to see how much more challenging this leg was than the park & AP trail.

Original Site Robert Harper's Ferry is a historic location in West Virginia where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet. It was originally established by Robert Harper in the mid-1700s as a ferry crossing, eventually lending its name to the town. Visitors can explore the C&O Canal Towpath, Maryland Heights, and Appalachian Trails that intersect at this point. Limited paid parking is available at the Amtrak Train Depot or on the street, with shuttle services from the Visitors Center.
This is such a great photo spot! It’s strange but it’s the point where 3 spots meet so if you’re looking to be in 3 places at once this is it! There is a ton of hiking, biking, and tubing around this area! Fun to meander and explore!

- a neat bridge you can walk on that is right next to active trains. They can be pretty loud just to warn you beforehand. - wasn't too busy but if you like to take pics it can be difficult as not everyone is courteous and has basic manners. - I recommend checking this little historical bridge out.

The Towns Inn & Marketplace was AMAZING! Karen & her Assistants at the Inn went above and beyond with their time during our stay. Towns Inn is beautiful and has every amenities that anyone needs during their stay. NO TV's/Cable in any of the rooms which is wonderful for relaxation away from it all. Now the Inn does have WiFi, Keurig machine & microwave & refrigerator in the rooms. You can get EVERYTHING your stay needs in the Marketplace Store for in your room. The Harpers Ferry Shuttle Bus Stop is a fantastic resource for visitors exploring the charming town and its historical sites. Conveniently located, this shuttle service connects the national park's visitor parking with downtown Harpers Ferry, making it easy to hop on and off without needing a ticket. The buses run frequently—approximately every 10-15 minutes—allowing you to enjoy your time without long waits.
If you were driving and planned to visit the town nearby, you could paid the tickets and parked here - and take the shuttle bus here. It would save you some time looking for a parking spot down there. The staff was very helpful as well.

I was in Harpers Ferry several days and got some very helpful information from a park ranger by the name of Pam. I needed a place to park my car (overnight) so that I could ride my electric unicycle on the C&O Canal Trail, all the way to Williamsport where I stayed at a Red Roof Inn. As a law enforcement agent, Pam could not have been more professional and certainly contributed to the overall great feeling I have about the Harpers Ferry. To upper management, please acknowledge the excellent quality of work that your officer, Pam provides to your team. She certainly exemplifies the way law enforcement should be.

Very convenient shuttle between the Harpers Ferry national park visitor parking and the town. You don’t need a ticket to board the bus. It’s said to be running every 10-15min, but I didn’t really wait for that long. Only downside for me is no pets allowed on the bus. Just be aware of its working hours. During daylight saving time, the last bus is 7pm, while for EST, the last bus runs at 5:30pm

The rangers that work here are very helpful and know their stuff. We’re going to make sure we bring family here when they visit. Another fun thing for the young ones, there is a pay phone that the kids couldn’t wrap their minds around.

Bus is free but if you don’t have pass it’s $20 to enter park. Bus is really convenient transportation to Harper Ferry and it takes about 5 minutes once it leaves the visitor center.
Paul W — Google review
Accessible from the main park's excess parking lot, the shuttle bus takes visitors to and from the park. I would estimate that 35-40 people may load the bus at once, with the bus making a round trip in about 15-20 minutes. As for the bus stop itself, there is coverage from rain in addition to some seating available.

Harpers Ferry Information Center is the starting point for the 1.6-mile Lower Town Trail, which leads through a wooded area to Shoreline Drive and into town. The center provides maps and local information, making it easy to explore the historical town and its connecting trails like River Access Trail, Virginia Island, and Halls Island Trail. Visitors appreciate the helpful staff who provide eclipse glasses for safe viewing and valuable local insights. However, parking can be challenging in this historic area.
Based on my visit, this is the same place as the park store. They have a lot of helpful information and things to buy if you are interested. The town stores nearby have old timey folks in there to talk to and learn about the history of the area. I hit up the store at the end of my visit and there were so many cute items!

Biking the C&O Towpath. Had a place to stay in Harpers Ferry. Had to carry our bikes up a steep and spiral staircase to get across the Potomac River. Then we had to go up hill to our AirBNB. What a cute place once we were all settled! Whew! That was an adventure!

The Shenandoah Canal, located within the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is a historic landmark dating back to 1806. Originally part of the Potowmack Canal System established by George Washington, it served as an important transportation route. Over time, it was replaced by railroads and larger canals, leading to its eventual obsolescence. Today, visitors can admire the remnants of this canal while exploring the park.
Travelling along the main road, the Shenandoah Canal is a wonderful sight when visiting Harpers Ferry. While many may find the algae off-putting, it is a natural and healthy part of ecosystem in maintaining a fresh environment for the local fauna. That said, many species of wildlife are typically found along the canal, such as ducks, geese, heron, turtles, and sometimes deer.
