Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a family-friendly destination that offers a blend of outdoor activities, historical sites, and museums. Established in 1944, the park encompasses numerous historic landmarks related to John Brown and the Civil War, as well as pristine nature spots and viewpoints along the Shenandoah River valley. The town itself features historic buildings, monuments, and a charming downtown district.
I didn't think a place like this existed! To think that its just 30 mins away was a plus for me! This is the place where you would want to go multiple times (winter, summer, spring, fall) a place where i could truly relax my body and mind! The old buildings that was left and preserved was a bonus and its just mind blowing that this existed and i was able to see and experience it. I have been 2x now but i still haven't seen tha whole place yet. If you are a hiking junkie then this is the place for you since it has multiple trails that everyone can enjoy! As a matter of fact i enjoyed it so much that i paid for a year for the park admission!

Harpers Ferry is one of those places that offers a little bit of everything—stunning views, rich history, and great outdoor recreation. Whether you’re looking to hike scenic trails, walk through America’s past, or simply enjoy a peaceful day by the river, this park delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended for families, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. Nestled at the meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a stunning destination that blends natural beauty, American history, and outdoor adventure. Our visit last Saturday was a refreshing and rewarding experience filled with scenic views, rich heritage, and plenty of time outdoors. For those who love the outdoors, Harpers Ferry is a dream. The park boasts numerous trails for hiking and trekking, ranging from short scenic walks to more intense climbs. A few favorites: • Maryland Heights Trail – Challenging but offers the best view over the town and rivers. • Jefferson Rock Trail – A short hike to a historic spot where Thomas Jefferson once stood. • Appalachian Trail – Yes, a section of this iconic trail runs right through the park! Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just want a light nature walk, there’s something for every level of adventure. Be ready for a lot of walking, especially up hills and along uneven paths. The historic charm comes with some elevation, but the views and the ambiance more than make up for the effort.

It was my first time visiting and it was absolutely gorgeous. We did the Maryland heights hike, its been on my bucket list and im so glad to have gotten it done! The weather was beautiful, the leaves are turning, and it was quite busy bit it was also a Saturday morning!

Great experience. Arrived with our RV and had ample parking. Hopped on a shuttle leaving you at the base of town. Cute little taverns and shops. Adorable town. Visited on a Sunday afternoon and sad that the church was locked up. Why not leave it open for those of us wanting to spend some time inside praying? Cute town.
Colleen H — Google review
Just go! If you haven't been yet, you need to get there. So beautiful. Easy trails. So scenic and peaceful. Plenty of parking. And there's a free shuttle to the village. Loved it.
MaryBeth L — Google review
This parks is a must in this area plus visiting the little downtown. There is so much history and amazing views that you can spend a day easily. We just want to return and do hiking and keep exploring the park. Thanks so much to the employees that even without receiving a paycheck are willing to keep working and are keeping the park in an outstanding shape. You are real heros!
Maria M — Google review
Found this park by accident while driving along Rt 340 checking out the fall foliage. There was no entrance fee due to the shutdown, but the visitor center was still open. Plenty of parking in the park. Free shuttles to Harpers Ferry town were running every 15mins. Staff were helpful and friendly. We took a short trail of about 2 miles starting right outside from the visitor center. Beautiful grounds with overlooks down to the Shenandoah river.
Vince N — Google review
Lower town is an amazing little spot for history and cool people and places! The shuttle to lower town gets busy on the weekends but it’s about a 30-40 minutes walk if you’re able to take the trail!

John Brown's Fort is a historic brick firehouse in Harpers Ferry, known for its connection to the abolitionist John Brown and his failed raid on the armory in 1859. This event is considered to have escalated tensions between the Union and Confederacy, ultimately leading to the start of the Civil War. The fort held by Brown and his army for three days has become a landmark site, offering visitors an opportunity to step inside and imagine the events that unfolded there.
The fort museum is a 3 hour experience with different educational videos and exhibits. Right now it’s under some light renovation on the outside so the entrance is at the rear. Went on a weekday, Harpers Ferry was busy with school children for a field trip. But…definitely not as busy as the weekend! And all of the kids were very respectful, unlike some others school trips I’ve encountered. Parking is either downtown or 2 miles away at the Harpers Ferry National Park visitor center. You can take a shuttle from there or walk 2 miles along the Shenandoah river to all the historical attractions. You do have to pay to park. Unless you have a national park pass then it’s free at the visitor center, but you have to shuttle or walk.
Kaitlyn N — Google review
John Brown's fort and Harper's Ferry are in the same place. This is a national park so if you have one of those America the Beautiful passes it is free. Otherwise you have to pay per car to get in. We have a pass so I didn't check the prices. This place has tons of great hiking. The Potomac and Shenandoah rivers border it. We went in April and there were tons of gnats and tiny bugs that tried to fly in all your exposed holes. Ugh. Bring a fan or get a pamphlet to fan the bugs away! There is A LOT of walking involved. You need to go to the visitor center and then catch a bus to the city center. They run every 15 mins. Even after you get to the city there is a lot of walking up an incline to see all the small museums, stores, and restaurants. You can drive to the city but there is extremely limited street parking. At 2pm there was a park ranger that gave an hour long educational speech about John Brown. Pretty interesting.

John Brown’s Fort-firehouse, is a historic landmark tied to the famous 1859 raid led by abolitionist John Brown. Although the fort has been moved a few times, the structure has been well-preserved and offers visitors a glimpse into the past. During my visit, the staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and I was allowed to take a photo of my Dalmatians in front of the firehouse, which added a memorable touch to my experience. For history buffs and anyone visiting Harpers Ferry, John Brown’s Fort is a must-see. Despite not standing in its original spot, it remains an enduring symbol of American history and the struggle for freedom.

Nestled along the Appalachian Trail, Jefferson Rock is a distinctive shale rock formation offering stunning views of rolling hills and rivers. Named after Thomas Jefferson, who marveled at its beauty in 1783, this landmark features a broad piece of shale resting on four stone pillars. A leisurely hike to this iconic spot presents panoramic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River.
Beautiful area with incredible views. Tons of photo opportunities and an area to sit and relax. Walk/hike is fairly short, but is pretty steep at the beginning. Be careful at the top as there are some steep dropoffs.
Jay S — Google review
Good hiking. Love the place. You can pay an anual fee of $30 to Park in the town. From there is one mile and half hike to the magnificent place. Don't forget to dispositivo your parking ticket

Great view of the Potomac River from an elevated place. A little slice of history, while taking in an incredible view of the mountains. Near by is also Harper Cemetery, St Peters Catholic Church and the ruins of St. Johns Episcopal Church.
Phillip H — Google review
An interesting story and a nice view above Harper’s Ferry Jefferson Rock is one of the highlights of Harpers Ferry. It gives a good mix of history, scenery, and a bit of historic adventure that personifies the town. The hike to the rock takes you up the hillside, passing by the iconic St. Peter’s Catholic Church along the way. The path itself is fairly manageable, and most sections have railings, but once you reach the rock the protection stops. Because of this, I would recommend the visit only for those who are sure-footed and comfortable with uneven ground, as the drop-offs can be intimidating without barriers. The payoff, however, is worth the effort. From a position next to the rock you get a sweeping view of the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, as well as the historic town of Harpers Ferry nestled below. The vantage point is both dramatic and peaceful, giving you a sense of why, according to the stories, Thomas Jefferson, during his travels, found this very spot so moving that it now bears his name. For those who wish to explore more, you can continue on the trail past Jefferson Rock and make your way to the Appalachian trail, which adds another layer of history to the walk. The informational sign could use a little care but, overall, this is a scenic and meaningful stop, best enjoyed with good shoes and sure footing. Enjoy.
Ward D — Google review
This is a fantastic climb with spectacular views from a higher vantage point than from scenic streets at ground level, both at Jefferson Rock itself and along the way up to the rock exhibit. You can climb onto Jefferson Rock and sit to enjoy the views further. Visitor Parking: Street parking in town is extremely limited and only available on a short-term basis for the businesses nearby. Harpers Ferry National Park parking lot offers daily parking at affordable rates. It is situated along Shoreline Dr., where you can park for $10-$15, depending on if you have a motorcycle or private vehicle. A guided shuttle bus will take you to the bus stop along Shenandoah St., where you can begin the scenic walk of Old Town Harpers Ferry into the modern town.
Erica B — Google review
Amazing views of the Shenandoah River, and the town of Harpers Ferry. Beautiful history in regard to the nature overlook. It’s not a short hike up, about 0.1 miles. You will know you are headed in the right direction when you are heading up the stairway to the old Catholic Church. Well worth the walk!
Jay O — Google review
Nice historical spot and beautiful views. If you go on a weekday, especially later in the afternoon, no one is usually there! You can walk up the stairs from town but there is a bit of an incline; not a terrible hike, but may be difficult for some! If you’d rather get there without the climb, you can go through the cemetery above it for a fast walk down.

St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church is a stunning Victorian Gothic church in Harpers Ferry, dating back to 1833. It boasts stained-glass windows, a dramatic spire, and a stone facade. This historic building survived the Civil War and offers a commanding view of the surrounding mountains and forests. Visitors can also explore Thomas Jefferson's Rock via a footpath from the church. The church is known for its intricate stained glass, solid doors, and historical significance.
We arrived too late to go inside. The church is impressive on the outside. We plan on coming back one day so that we can see the inside. Seeing the church in January with snow made it more special.

Beautiful church with such history! Came for the 9:30 mass and loved the community and reverence. Visitors definitely need to plan to park off site and walk over.
Elisabeth T — Google review
This is a very beautiful church, and at first I thought it was just a piece of history, but turns out the hold mass every Sunday. A masterpiece of craftsmanship indeed. Went here on a 4h trip and everyone was talking about how beautiful it was even if they weren't Catholic. I'm Catholic and this is a church I would go to. If you ever find yourself in Harper's ferry, come to church here and admire the beauty and the mass.
Broderick Y — Google review
Beautiful church with a commanding view of both rivers. Wonderful stone front, intricate stained glass and very solid doors. Be aware that services seem to only be on Sundays. As others have noted, there is no local parking, you will need to park at the bottom of the hill in one of the lots and walk up.
Angelo S — Google review
Beautiful church that is still active and holds services. Stunning inside! Everything was very well kept. The church is also listed as a historic site. No matter your religion it’s worth going in and seeing this beautiful piece of art!

White Hall Tavern, established since the 1850s, has been a hub for local debates and discussions. While it may not be the same bustling spot for drinks today, its well-preserved interior and informative displays now attract history enthusiasts and tourists. Situated near John Browns Fort in Harpers Ferry, this nondescript tavern offers an authentic atmosphere and historic charm.
Wonderfully preserved Period Tavern. Small tables, chairs, stove. Looks like it is still in sevice. Great Stop

At the moment I entered the establishment, I was greeted by a sweet young lady (whether barmaid or publican, I did not ask) who we found to be very knowledgeable and personable. She proceeded to relate to us the events of John Brown’s raid and it’s affect on the community, as well as the period up to and after the war, and how her pub was often central to these events – as a simple escape from the turmoil over a shot of whiskey, provide for social gathering to debate such events, or even to conspire plans to aid in the advancement of one side or the other. Warning, be under no illusions that her charm and attraction means she is simple or meek – she can quickly quench a drunken brawl, as well as pummel the best in an aggressive game of checkers.

an odd little place to stop on your trip to harper’s ferry. entry is $5/person, but you can buy items in their small gift shop which count towards your ticket price. the worker told me the building is for sale, so go see it while you still can!

It was a fun time at this museum. While walking through the historical park there are plenty of informational plaques, but this took it to a new level. This was an immersive experience where you could visualize the events of John Brown's life, instead of just reading about them. My group loved this museum and we were so glad that we were able to go to it.
Elijah C — Google review
Not the highest quality wax figures, but the displays are very well done. The history lesson is also very interesting and is something most people likely don't know about American anti-slavery history. Very informative. Harper's Ferry is home to a lot of historical attractions and this is just one of them. $7 for adults, $6 for seniors/veterans. Six floors of displays depicting the life of John Brown and his anti-slavery raid on Harper's Ferry.

Amazing place! Kitsch in the best way. Friendly staff. JB Wax Museum>All the Smithsonians combined. $5 admission is deal of a lifetime. I would've paid my life savings to see Waxie JB.
Bill K — Google review
A good history lesson, and still just as creepy as I remember it being when I was in the fourth grade. My kids (10, 12, & 14) all enjoyed it. The upkeep of the building left much to be desired. There was an strong mildew odor throughout, despite obvious attempts to cover it with air fresheners. Lots of peeling wall paper and floors in need of cleaning or repair.
Kim B — Google review
The displays are in disrepair, the lighting is very bad such that you can hardly read the plaques on the wall, and and worst of all it's just kind of shabby. To boot, the displays aren't even that interesting. Several of the things on the wall seem just copied from the internet and printed with an inkjet printer. The best wax figure, John Brown with crazy eyes thrusting a bayonet, is visible from the street. You won't learn anything or get a good perspective on anything that you can't get from one of the many free museums around. If you like creepy wax dolls though you're in for a treat.

Arsenal Square is a significant historical site within a national park, featuring the remnants of two brick buildings that were once used to store weapons. Although there may not be much to see at first glance, informative boards provide visitors with insight into the scale and function of the arsenal during its prime. Efforts are underway to potentially reconstruct the arsenal based on historical records and archaeological discoveries. The National Park Service has effectively preserved this landmark, which has been relocated multiple times throughout history.
There's not much to see or appreciate at first glance but the information boards really help fill the gap, allowing visitors to imagine the size and scope of the arsenal in its heyday. With enough funding, they may be able to commit to a faithful reconstruction of the arsenal, based on archaeological findings and historical archives.

Located between St. Peter's church and Harper Cemetery along the Appalachian Scenic Trail this is a nod to what used to be. Going up the Appalachian Trail footsteps to reach an entry point to the Appalachian Trail proper, several historical sites will be passed. Of these, the ruins of St. John's Episcopal Church may be seen. Like many other sites throughout Harpers Ferry, nature has retaken most of the grounds. For what remains of the ruins, numerous broken entrances are on each side that provide a satisfying sense of enjoyment to walk through.

Jefferson Rock is a picturesque rock formation near Harpers Ferry, named after Thomas Jefferson who was captivated by the area's beauty. It offers stunning views of the Potomac River and the town of Harpers Ferry. Efforts to preserve this historical site have led to restrictions on climbing for safety reasons. Accessible via a short uphill walk from the main town, it's a must-see attraction for visitors interested in history and natural beauty.

Had a nice little hike to Jefferson Rock. There are lots of steps, so be aware of this, if you have a stroller or find steps difficult. From Jefferson Rock, you will be able to view both the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
Kay H — Google review
As one of Harpers Ferry's most notable attractions, Jefferson Rock embodies some greater sense of historical impact that draws visitors to be in its presence. Here, the views of the Potomac River and Harpers Ferry are some of the best. In recent times, efforts to preserve this site have been made, resulting in prohibiting visitors from climbing. The purpose also serves to encourage safety, as being atop the rock is hazardous. Around d the perimeter is a chain to dissuade visitors from encroaching the platform's edge. In addition to the artifact itself, signage is available to read.

Steep but short climb up from historic Harpers Ferry to this worthwhile vista with stunning views of the Potomac, Shenandoah rivers and nearby Harper's Ferry. Be prepared to climb steps and walk by the ruins of a fallen church but the 10 to 15 minute hike is worth the payoff view at the top
Daniel D — Google review
If you are hiking the trail or just visiting Harpers Ferry, it is worth the climb and stop to admire the same view that Jefferson did. Great view of the river and the valley. I imagine in the fall it would be more spectacular. Nearby bench to sit a spell.
Angelo S — Google review
I was unsure how far of a hike it would be to reach Jefferson Rock before I went there. So for clarity, if you manage to find parking directly in the town of Harpers Ferry or catch a shuttle bus into town from the visitor's center, it is hardly a hike at all from there. Just up the stairs that run behind the church and passed the old church ruins & it's not too much further back from there. There was another trail into the spot though, so I am unsure how far of a hike it is from wherever that trail begins. Beautiful view from there overlooking the river too!
Alexis R — Google review
Worth the 15-minute hike from Lower Town. President Jefferson stood at this spot more than 200 years ago and was in awe of the view he gave it a glowing review. "You stand on a very high point of land. On your right comes up the Shenandoah, having ranged along the foot of the mountain an hundred miles to seek a vent. On your left approaches the Patowmac, in quest of a passage also. In the moment of their junction they rush together against the mountain, rend it asunder, and pass off to the sea." If you have time, visit the Harper Cemetery nearby, which also offers great views of the area.

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is dedicated to preserving and managing the land surrounding the iconic Appalachian Trail. Established in 1925, the ATC relies on volunteers and staff to maintain the 2,190-mile trail from Maine to Georgia. Headquartered in Harpers Ferry, a significant point along the trail, it serves as a popular spot for hikers to capture milestone photos at the visitors center. The town itself sees an influx of weary backpackers seeking supplies and respite.
The crew that mans the conservancy are beyond great- knowledgeable about every aspect of the trail and its historical location as well

Started my Appalachian Trail flip-flop hike here in May of 2025. Very friendly staff and volunteers here, definitely worth a stop if you are hiking the trail or are at all interested in it.

I loved this place. The people were knowledgeable and helpful. They are making a nice little walkway and garden that is paved with memorial bricks with different names and messages on them from past hikers. It really gives you a sense of walking through history.

The Appalachian Trail changed my life. The ATC does amazing work to support thousands of hikers each year!!

Worth a visit, parking around back and bathrooms. The volunteers here were very welcoming and knowledgeable. Me and my pup took our picture for their Appalachian hikers book and website.

We stopped in to check out this visitor center while walking around Harper’s Ferry. Clean restroom available, a small but well-stocked store with AT gear and memorabilia, and lots of information to learn about the trail. The folks staffing it are super friendly and clearly love sharing about the trail and the hikers they’ve met.

The Shenandoah Canal, located within the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, is a historic landmark dating back to 1806. Originally part of the Potowmack Canal System established by George Washington, it served as an important transportation route. Over time, it was replaced by railroads and larger canals, leading to its eventual obsolescence. Today, visitors can admire the remnants of this canal while exploring the park.
Travelling along the main road, the Shenandoah Canal is a wonderful sight when visiting Harpers Ferry. While many may find the algae off-putting, it is a natural and healthy part of ecosystem in maintaining a fresh environment for the local fauna. That said, many species of wildlife are typically found along the canal, such as ducks, geese, heron, turtles, and sometimes deer.

Just be careful here. Make sure you hose yourself down with deet cause this is a breeding ground for skeeters. Other than that a cool place to come across while hiking.

Parking lot
Harpers Ferry National Park offers various parking options for visitors. Parking in the Lower Town can be challenging and expensive, with lots filling up early. However, the visitor center provides free parking with admission and a shuttle service to the Lower Town. The town itself is picturesque, especially during the fall season, and there are ample walking opportunities with stunning scenery. A day pass costs $20 or an annual pass for $80.
It’s a great experience walking around town and learning about the local history. Walking across the bridge to see the river and watching people float by was a highlight. It made for a lovely family outing, and we enjoyed exploring the area together.
Kiwi M — Google review
Walked to town via the Jefferson rock which was strenuous as they said. The shuttle back was nicely air conditioned.
Ron P — Google review
Very historical - it is best to hop on the shuttle bus to tour and visit the historical lower town as parking is very limited. Things to see are the Visitor centers - there are more than one - old buildings which have been refurbished and some have been made into museums, John Brown's Fort, and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Harpers Ferry practically sits at the center of the Appalachian Trail. A walking tour through the heart of the lower town is highly recommended!!
Julie M — Google review
A gorgeous town in an amazing setting . A little heavy on the tourists. Between the architecture, history and scenic views there is plenty to see and do. Parking is very limited in town. The welcome center offers shuttle bus rides into town at the cost of $20 per car. This covers parking. Park entry fees to several sections as well as the shuttle bus. Glad I didn't go on a weekend.
Ktol 1 — Google review
We always love visiting, there's great hikes and the town is very cool to go through. If you pay the parking fee you are able to get into all museums free!
Briana T — Google review
Very beautiful town. Lots of walking with great scenery. During fall season is the most gorgeous to go visit. Its $20 per car or $35 for the whole year. They have a huge parking lot. You can walk to the town from the visitor parking which is about 2 miles down or you hop on the bus which is free and they will take you down (5 min ride). They have parking down the town but its very limited unless you arrive super early. They have a few mini restaurants and some stores as well. Great family gathering for exploration and something to go on a weekend. Didnt have a chance to go on the trail hike but I heard it was about 3 hours back and forth.
Simple 7 — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place to visit. It is all uphill and a lot of steep steps to get to certain things but worth it. Many trails to hike from easy to challenging. Best advice is go while you're young enough and still have good knees. 😄
Jul B — Google review
20$ for a day pass, 80$ for annual pass. That being said bathrooms were clean and the bus was free into the town, ensure you plan on spending the day. It’s beautiful.

Was closed for renovations but no notice in park information. We didn't discover it till we got there. However the Black History tour around Storer College neighborhood was fascinating. Would give the self guided tour 5 stars.

It was closed when we visited. No signs were posted outside, just cones blocking off the entrance. No mention of closure on national park website.

Cool building with a lot of history. It would be nice if the Park Service could keep this open. Guess they can’t. It’s in fairly rough shape.

Explore the historic Storer College Campus, a significant site where the early foundations of the NAACP were laid. The campus is located near iconic landmarks and offers access to scenic hikes along the Potomac River and C&O Canal. This area was once home to over 30,000 newly freed individuals after the Civil War, making it a place rich in historical significance.
It's wonderful to be able to walk in the campus where education of free Black men and women began!

A beautiful campus to visit for civil right history Storer College campus is located about ½ mile away from the lower town of Harpers Ferry. There is a lot of history here. It was founded in 1867 to educate freed slaves and later hosted the 1906 Niagara Movement meeting that helped lead to the NAACP. The college closed in 1955, but the old campus buildings remain and are now used by the National Park Service. The campus sits up on Camp Hill, above the lower town of Harpers Ferry. It’s just a few minutes’ drive from the shops and museums below, and there is parking by the buildings. It is much easier parking here than trying to squeeze into the lower town lots. I think the entire campus is one of those places that feels quiet but full of meaning. Walking around the grounds, we enjoyed the views as the buildings still look to be in good condition. If you’re visiting Harpers Ferry, it’s worth the short trip up the hill just to stand where so much of the struggle for education and civil rights once happened but be aware that if you want more information you may be better served to go to the museum in the lower town or research on your phone as there are not a lot of informational displays around the campus and the museum seems to have a lot more data on the site.
