Chichibu Shrine, located at the westernmost tip of Saitama prefecture, is a hidden gem known for its ornate sculptures and carvings. The shrine has a long tradition of mountain asceticism and is said to have been founded by Emperor Sujin in the first century. Hand-carved by Hindari Jingoro, the shrine's buildings date back to the Edo Period.
This shrine near Chichibu Station was rebuilt by Tokugawa Ieyasu. A spring from Chichibu flows through the shrine grounds, and there is an interesting water fortune-telling ceremony in which characters appear when the shrine is dipped in the water. There is also an objet d'art lurking at the bottom of the clear water in the hand-watering basin. The four sides of the main shrine are decorated with magnificent carvings, and visitors can enjoy walking around the main shrine after praying. Among them is a parent's guide to child rearing, "Do not let the baby out of your skin," inscribed with the words, "A child is a treasure, a tiger for raising children," by the Edo period master craftsman Jingoro Sa. Don't let go of your infant's hand. Keep your eyes on the child. Don't let go of your heart to the young.

Beautiful shrine. Nice walk from Seibu Chichibu station, there were many stores on the way.

A beautiful Shrine in a beautiful city! The wood carvings alone are a good reason to come and visit. Unique Omamori for sale, also traffic safety reflector Omamori as well! The shrine has a little traditional cafe next to it so you can enjoy anmitsu and matcha near by.
Katharina T — Google review
The shrine is beautiful with very nice wooden painting and carving on the entire building. It can get very crowded during the new year week. There are a lot of street food stalls during this time. Some traditional Japanese Shinto ceremonies are also carried out around this time.
Saurabh — Google review
Beautiful shrine. The colors and carvings are so vibrant! Hope to return and spend more time!
Marc Z — Google review
Very good location with an interesting history. The monkeys illustrated here have the opposite positive meaning to those in Nikko - instead of see/speak/hear no evil, they encourage people to see/speak/hear good
Mark W — Google review
The shrine is so beautiful and theres much to do and see. Must watch in Chichibu

Some nice areas like a small island surrounded by water - saw a cat walk across a stepping stone and did nighttime photography. Easy to get to, but not a key attraction. Worth checking out if you're passing by.

Nestled at an elevation above 1,000m, Mitsumine Shrine is a historical and powerful site that has gained popularity as one of the leading "power spots" in Kanto. The shrine boasts must-see attractions including large trees along the entrance path, a majestic shrine, and an ancient sacred tree. Visitors can also witness breathtaking views of sea of clouds during spring and autumn.
Accessed from the Chichibu side of Tama Kai National Park, this shrine requires navigating extremely winding, narrow mountain roads where you’ll find yourself naturally forming convoys with other vehicles for safety. Upon arrival, you’ll pay entrance and parking fees at the parking area before entering this uniquely mystical shrine. Unlike typical Inari shrines, Mitsumine is dedicated to wolves, creating a distinctive atmosphere and offering many wolf-themed items and souvenirs. The shrine is particularly famous for its powerful amulets - you can write your name and purchase specific charms, after which the shrine priests will pray for your wishes using your written name. The scenic mountain setting adds to the spiritual experience, making this a worthwhile stop if you’re exploring the Chichibu area of Tama Kai National Park.

10-Feb-2025 This was our starting point for Kumotori hike so we planned to pay respects. But there was a long queue and we were already late for hike. So we just visit around and observe shrine from distance.

This places located on mountain range. Beautiful scenery awaited, can be seen from parking area. You will need to climbing a bit, but not too steep. There’s a huge old tree and greenery, making this place a good power spot to Japanese people.

Love this Shrine. Very quiet and peaceful place. All the very narrow roads drove up here.
Juju Z — Google review
Phenomenal shrine up high on the mountain. Can easily drive or take a bus up to the temple with large parking lot, toilets and a few options for food and drinks. Very often foggy at the top, but I preferred the moody atmosphere. I went on a Sunday in summer and it was a cool temperature with few other people. I bet in Fall though it is a leaf peeping madhouse as others have said
Nathan J — Google review
This shrine is located deep in the mountains of Chichibu. There is a bus from Seibu Chichibu Station, but it is recommended to go by car. The vermilion-painted gate from the approach is impressive, and the clear, crisp air is pleasant. The main hall is also brilliantly colored and solemn. There is a legend that a wolf guided Emperor Yamato Takeru, and the guardian lions are wolves. There are two sacred trees in front of the main hall, and after visiting the main hall, it is recommended to take three deep breaths and offer a prayer.
44 G — Google review
Wonderful huge shrine nestled in the mountains with ample parking space. It does look like a highly respected shrine with lots of patrons listed on stone tablets as you stroll towards the main shrine. The main shrine is flanked by two huge majestic old cedar trees.
Rtexal T — Google review
I have been planning a visit to this Shrine for some years and I was not disappointed. I took the first bus from Seibu Chichibu station. I arrived about 30 minutes early and I was glad because the bus was packed, but I was able to get a seat. The bus ride takes more than one hour as it winds its way up and narrow mountain road. Even on a Tuesday after a rain, many people were making the pilgrimage. The complex is extensive and impressive. Some of the carvings and paintings remind me of Nikko. So much energy and effort go into maintaining this holy place which is quite remote from everything. I had considered driving my car, but I was very glad I did not do so. Now that I have been there perhaps I would drive next time, but only if I were visiting with family or friends. I was able to explore some of the trails, but there are many more options. Words cannot describe the effect of being that high up in the mountains in such a sacred place. People refer to this as a power spot and I know exactly what they mean the one great mystery to me how to stay in lodging. The website is broken so you can’t reserve a room there. The website instructs you to call a phone number but that phone number just rings and rings. There is no recording. I thought to pop into the lodge during my visit, but I let it go because I don’t have any particular plans to stay there at this time. I guess it was just not meant to be, but perhaps in the future. The lodge itself is extensive, and appeared to be open. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit Mitsumine Shrine and encourage you to do so as well. I befriended an international traveler who was a bit confused on how to pay the bus fare in cash, but he was able to sort that out. The bus drivers are true heroes navigating that narrow Mountain Road in those large vehicles full of pilgrims. The whole operation is truly outstanding and I can see why it is one of the great features of this area. Thank you 🙏🎉😄

Nature & Parks
Hitsujiyama Park is a picturesque setting known for its vibrant flower displays, making it a popular destination in spring. The park features Shibazakura, a unique type of cherry blossom that carpets the area in various shades of pink and white, creating a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can enjoy outdoor activities and take in the beauty of thousands of cherry blossoms blooming like a fluffy pink carpet at this scenic park near Tokyo.
Every year during spring, golden week and autumn, I come to enjoy Chichibu’s natural beauty. I visited this park on May 4th 2024. Although the moss phlox season has passed, it is still nice to sit outdoor with fresh air and natural scenery. There’s a farm market, they call it ‘marche’ and there is a sheep farm. Still in the same area, a bit further there is an athletic park for children. It’s recommended for a family with children.
Edelweiss47 S — Google review
Beautiful shibazakura can be viewed. There were also some food stores to enjoy the local delicacy ( strawberry) and the flowers. The parking fee and entrance fee was separate.
Anika ( — Google review
This is a vast park. I originally just wanted to come here for an early morning run, but since the park is on a slope (or hill), I changed my mind and decided to take a walk instead. It has large lawns and walking trails (or paths), and it's quite interesting because you can even spot some animals here.
SS Y — Google review
Hitsujiyama Park, Chichibu, is known for its attractive moss-pink field. Open hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the festival from mid-April to early May. The ticket price was just 300 yen per adult, and it’s really worth it. The ticket counter staff and other staff were really kind and friendly. The park is well maintained, and they have some beautiful flower decorations too. They had 10 types of flowers there, and those flowers are lovely and take away all stress. This hillside park is pretty crowded during festival season, but you can still enjoy it. You can enjoy a variety of foods from stoles in addition to the moss pink yard. There are plenty of food styles, which include Japanese traditional cuisine. The food was really yummy, and the vendors were really nice. When you go a few steps further, you can see a few sheep on their small farm. Sometimes we can’t actually watch sheep at the zoo, so I feel so happy. However, take my advice: if you go during peak season, please be ready to walk, or else you can get on a taxi too. I walked from Chchibu station to Hitsujiyama Park, and it took me 20 minutes, but it was a nice experience. This gorgeous park gives you fresh air to breathe. It was worth visiting this garden again, and I hope to go there next year too.
Prageeth A — Google review

On April 20, 2021 the flowers are about 85% blooming. This park is not that big as my expectation, but nice to come here during shibazakura season. I've enjoyed it so much! Entrance fee is ¥300.

The Chichibu Festival Museum is a venue that celebrates the Night Festival of the Chichibu Shrine, showcasing intricate Shōwa-era floats. The city of Chichibu is renowned for its annual festival, the Chichibu Night Festival, held in December. Visitors can also explore cultural and historical sites like the Chichibu Shrine and Mitsumine Shrine, as well as savor local cuisine such as Chichibu soba noodles and pork.
If you are in Chichibu, to see what kind of festival Chichibu is famous for, you’d better not miss it and take a look at this museum. It has projection mapping and also 3D film I introducing about seasonality of festivals. Beautiful and huge dashi floats! Every year on early December (this year Dec 2 and 3) - they are having Chichibu night festival so don’t miss it!
Kyoko N — Google review
If you are curious about the festivals of this area and their traditions, this is the place, there are two main expositions and some virtual displays. Also a small souvenir shop.
Jomin N — Google review
This place was interesting, my partner and I got to see the omikoshi (festival floats), a short video showing the festival, and then we saw a 3D video about the festivals in Chichibu. However it's all in Japanese. There is one section of the museum on the second floor that explains the Chichibu night festival in English. It's really interesting. I'd say go, why not? 500 yen per person. There is a gift shop, and a stage where I assume there are musical performances? I didn't get to see that though.
SYRI4L — Google review

Nestled at the base of Mount Hodo, Hodosan Shrine is a revered religious site with a rich history dating back to 111. This shrine boasts intricate carvings and a main hall that was reconstructed during the early Meiji Period. It is also famous for its association with the legendary hero Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, who is rumored to have bathed in a nearby pond.
Chasing autumn leaves, arrived around 6 PM. The temple was lighted up and we had the rare pleasure of sharing this with just a few others. Only November!

Visited on 6 Nov. Autumn leaves for this year are late, so the shrine is not so pretty. Nevertheless the shrine is still impressive
Cher K — Google review
Surrounded by very tall trees. Parking is easy.

Absolutely worth coming to see the plum blossoms! It was my first time witnessing such beautiful and fragrant plum blossoms – truly delightful. Taking the ropeway round trip costs 600 yen, and if you come by car, parking is 500 yen. I highly recommend coming here to relax; starting from January, you can enjoy the plum blossoms, and they should be in full bloom by February.
Ambrose S — Google review
Beautiful, well-maintained shrine. Momiji making it even better. 10-15 min walk from Nagatoro station, slightly uphill. We went on a Saturday morning a bit earlier than most of the crown. At around 11am as we were departing, more people are pouring in so I think it can get crowded on weekend peak hours.
Xyra N — Google review
A really well cared for, clean and beautiful. Free parking at the bottom of the shrine. Not very stroller friendly because if the stairs and pebbles so baby carry or walking is best.
Danielle M — Google review
Quiet place. The shrine is very beautiful and same with all places in Japan very clean and organize. A lot of parking spots. A quick tour will be sufficient.
Kevin R — Google review
Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine. The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too. The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Nestled in the heart of Chichibu, Meisenkan is a charming museum dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Chichibu textiles and traditional Meisen kimonos. Established in 1930, this beautifully constructed building is recognized as a tangible cultural property. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture through engaging hands-on experiences like dyeing and hand-weaving, allowing them to connect with the artistry behind these exquisite fabrics.
The grandpa is very patient to demonstrate how to dye the handkerchief.. small and cosy place to see the hand weaving..

Rich history in this quaint little museum. We can still see the old traditional looms being used to create the silk. The gift shop has some of locally spun products available for purchase as well.

Interesting little museum of silk manufacturing. Not much for non - Japanese speakers, I think. All the signs are in Japanese and unless they have a staff member who speaks English, you may struggle to figure out what is the purpose of each piece of equipment. But still interesting.

(Translated by Google) There are plenty of hands-on experiences available. Many people were weaving. I would have liked to try a variety of things if I had more time, but I ended up making coasters using a loom. It's fun to be able to choose from a variety of threads. The souvenir shop is also large, and if there was something they didn't have in stock, they introduced me to the maker. I was very grateful for their kindness. I was really grateful. However, it's usually not possible, so if you want to try it, I recommend coming at a time with plenty of time. Saitama Prefectural Museum of Nature offers a diverse collection showcasing local ecosystems, featuring taxidermy specimens, minerals, and dinosaur fossils. The museum provides an educational experience for visitors interested in the natural world. Additionally, Chichibu Onsen Mangan-no-Yu is a nearby day-trip hot spring facility located along the picturesque Hinosawa River. The alkaline hot spring water is known for its skin benefits and therapeutic properties, making it a popular destination for relaxation and rejuvenation.
The megalodon figure that greets you at the entrance is gave me the first life size comparison. The many tactile displays made for a very engaging visit. About 70% of the displays came with English explanation. The museum focuses on geology and fauna in various environments found in Japan. Definitely a good place to visit. Within the shrine grounds is a large zelkova tree believed to be over 1,000 years old, and its mere presence alone creates a sacred atmosphere. When I visited, there were few people and the atmosphere was very calm, which left a better impression than Chichibu Shrine. There is also "holy water" within the grounds, and touching the pure water felt like my mind was purified. I also received a special handwritten goshuin (red seal) with the words "ichigoku manbai" (one grain of blessing) on it, which warmed my heart with its auspicious meaning. It takes about 20 minutes by bus from Seibu Chichibu Station, but be aware that there are limited buses. If there are four of you, it would be more efficient to take a taxi from the station, and the fare is not so high if you split up, so it's a good idea to check the bus schedule in advance. The main hall, which is an important cultural property of the prefecture, is very impressive and gives off a sense of history. Perhaps because it was lunchtime, I got mixed up with other worshipers and was able to take my time to look around. First of all, I thought that the lotus flower shape of the hand wash was very unusual and wonderful. As you proceed, you will see the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha and the guardian deities of the 12 zodiac animals lined up side by side, making it a sight to behold. It is said that Jizo statues and prayer beads purchased at the temple office are placed here to pray. The main hall was open to the public so you could see the dragon on the ceiling and the Otasuke Kannon statue, and there was a notebook where visitors could write freely. Since it is the Year of the Dragon, there is a commemorative cut-out goshuin (1,500 yen), and the letters are handwritten by the chief priest. The renowned stone statues draw attention, but it is the Jibo Kannon statue that captivates visitors with its pure and radiant beauty. This particular statue has been depicted in Ukiyo-e art, lending it even more significance. Notably, there is said to be a hidden frog carving on the backside pedestal.

It has one of the most famous Niomon gates among the Chichibu temples, and is also well known as the "Temple of Stone Buddhas." Passing through the Niomon gate, with its large straw sandals hanging over it, you will find over 1,300 stone Buddha statues lined up within the temple grounds. These statues were commissioned by the monk Kosentogaku as a memorial for those who died in the great famine that began in 1783, and it is said that there were once around 3,800 statues. Donors include those with ties to feudal lords from Edo, Bushu, Kishu, Echizen, and other regions. To the right of the main hall's corridor, the famous Child-Raising Kannon statue casts a gentle gaze. The donor, Yoshinoya Hanzaemon, was blessed with a child thanks to the miraculous power of the principal image of Kinshoji Temple, but subsequently lost his wife and child in succession. He commissioned an ukiyo-e artist to sketch the mother and child's appearance while they were alive, and erected this Buddhist statue as a memorial. Historic Sites
Former Arai Family Residence is a historic site dating back to the Edo period, once belonging to the village headman. The building features chestnut boards and a shingled roof, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional architecture. Designated as a nationally important cultural property, it was constructed during the era of the 8th Shogun Yoshimune and relocated in 1975. The residence requires an admission fee for entry and is located near Nagatoro Town Local Museum.
The Former Arai Family Residence is a beautiful and well-maintained silkworm raising farmhouse (古民家 kominka). It’s very worthwhile to get a guided tour, which is free as long as the museum staff have time to take you around. It’s ¥200 entry and located behind the Nagatoro Town Museum which is included in the price. There is parking right outside which is shared with Nagatorogura, the sake brewery which is across the carpark. This farmhouse was originally located on the other side of town closer to Nogami I believe, but was donated to the town and moved to this location for public display. When the authorities discovered the Arai farmhouse had been renovated three times they restored it to its original condition. The Arai family were silkworm farmers and the history is fascinating. Imagine the whole first floor covered in silkworms munching away at a whole bunch of leaves! During this period the family slept upstairs. The farmhouse looks out over an aspect of farmland and has a stand of bamboo next to it, so it’s very natural and serene. In spring the farmland is dotted with cherry trees in bloom between the fields. See if you you find where the hidden newlyweds bedroom is - let’s just say that the door that looks like a cupboard well, it’s not a cupboard! Well worth a visit.

(It seems that high windows were added after the renovation) It has a very old-fashioned appearance, with a shingle roof covered with stones. It is possible to take a stroll around the building except for the Okunodee (Okuma) and the second floor. Although the roofs and scales are different, I felt that there were many places with similar structures, such as the chaya Honjin near Gunma Yokogawa, where there was a stable inside the house and the location of the bath. From the deck, you can see the bamboo forest outside, which gives it a nice atmosphere. Japanese inn
Nagatoro Hana no Omotenashi Choseikan is a charming hot spring inn located in Nagatoro, just a three-minute walk from Nagatoro Station. The inn offers airy rooms, traditional Japanese dining, and two types of baths including an open-air bathhouse. Guests can enjoy the serene atmosphere and take in the natural beauty of Nagatoro Valley from their rooms.
Hana no Omotenashi Choseikan located in Nagatoro is an iconic ryokan overlooking the Arakawa River, with incredible views of the river and the layered rock (Iwadatami) formations. We stayed on the second floor which gave us a panoramic view of the river and mountains. As this is the most famous ryokan in the Nagatoro area, it was very busy in all areas (reception, dining, baths). This ryokan is located about 5 minutes walk from the Nagatoro train station. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very professional clerk. We immediately went to see the gorgeous view of the river from the breakfast dining room, at which point the staff graciously let us know about the gardens and provided a map of the surrounding river area. The service throughout was attentive, hospitable, and friendly. In particular, the gift shop clerk was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our rooms were exquisitely renovated with new furnishings and new tatami mats. The room is comfortable for a family of 3, but for 4 people we recommend two rooms. The only point of criticism is that the genkan area is a bit tight for both shoes and slippers. We spent quite a lot of time on the balcony enjoying the river and the mountains. As every room is located on the East side, every room on the first floor has either a view of the gardens or a view of the river (2nd floor). The main dinner is served in an adjacent dining area that combined traditional and modern aesthetics. The meal was overwhelmingly delicious and abundant. The ingredients were all sourced locally from the surrounding hodosan area. We also had an okosama set for our young child which proved to be about 6x more than they could eat. The breakfast was very traditional and did not have a kid's menu, so if your child is a picky eater, they may have some difficulty with the more adult breakfast menu. The coffee is sourced from a roaster right outside the ryokan and it is an exceptionally good roast. The baths were very high quality, with the men's bath in particular having a beautiful garden view. The women and men's baths do not change. I found that the water for the outdoor bath felt more mineral-y than the indoor bath, with the outdoor water feeling very slick upon the skin. The relaxation area has free massage chairs that are STRONG. Overall, we would choose Choseikan again when we visit Nagatoro in the future. Best regards from Canada.

In the countryside of Nagatoro, this hotel exudes an old-fashioned charm upon entering, maintaining the typical polite and clean atmosphere of Japan. The hotel's phone is delightfully antiquated. Both dinner and breakfast follow traditional Japanese styles. There are two types of baths: a regular bath and an outdoor bath. The bathing amenities include tools for foot care, as well as body lotion and facial toner.

Nice ryokan for the stay in Nagatoro and everyone was very kind to us. We largely stayed in our rooms so there’s nothing much to say about the amenities like the dinners or the bath. Check in was smooth, and they very nicely held our bags pre and post stay.

Nestled in the heart of Chichibu, Nagatorogura Sake Brewery and Boutique Store is a gem that beautifully marries tradition with modernity. Established during the Edo period, this brewery has a rich history spanning 290 years. Visitors can explore its stunning new warehouse-style building and enjoy guided tours that include tastings of their exquisite junmaishu sake, crafted from locally sourced rice and water from Saitama Prefecture.
Beautiful sake brewery. You can see the koji room, washing rice, process of sake making video at the brewery. Artistic sake cups, well designed goods are available to purchase. There are 2 different kind of sake you can taste if you are not driving.

Nagatoro sake brewery shop. I visited this place on Monday, May 26th 2025 after enjoying the beautiful poppy field. The interior is Japanese traditional wooden warehouse structure. Second floor was a cafe, but after coronavirus pandemic, it is closed. Motainai! On the first floor you can find Chichibu sake, amazake, the leftover crushed rice after sake processing, pouches, scarves, sake sherbet, etc. There is a door leading to a sake brewery next to the cashier desk. Slide the door and it will lead to another building. In that building, you can see the old brewery. It’s very clean and nice. It used to be a sake brewery. Now it’s only a museum. I bought a gelato made from rice sake leftovers. There are strawberry, lemon, and original flavors. I chose original flavor. It was delicious. The texture is like sherbet ice. You won’t feel the sake taste, but after you finish eating it, a few minutes later you can feel the sake taste in your tongue.

The sake brewery has a 290 year history but the warehouse style building is new and absolutely beautiful! It’s free to go in a visit. You can cross a bridge which connects the store to the brewery and watch the brewers hard at work. The store offers sake tastings, and also sells other products like textiles, ceramics and food from the local area. The views of the town and surrounding farmland and mountains from the windows are really nice! There’s parking right outside the door and the town museum and silk farmhouse are right in front. It’s only a 10min walk from Nagatoro Station - just go through the torii gates and the brewery and store are on the left. Highly recommend it.

The shop is in an elegant building and gives off a sense of good taste. I happened to stop by to see the local museum, the Old Arai Residence, and it was right across the street. There are climbers and signboards on the approach, but for some reason it's easy to overlook them, so be careful. The store sells the famous sake ``Nagatoro'' as well as carefully selected sake vessels, snacks, and souvenirs. Wado is a serene hot spring inn with picturesque river views, an on-site bathhouse, and a restaurant. It is also known for its historical significance as the location of Wado Ruins, which is believed to be the birthplace of Japan's first currency. The area encompasses Wado mining traces and shrines, including the revered Hijiri Shrine. This makes it a popular destination for those seeking spiritual experiences and good fortune.
Nice ryokan and hot spring bath! We went during the weekend of the Chichibu Matsuri! Our room came with the private bath - it was peaceful and the environment is a good place to relax!
Ed L — Google review
We have visited Wado previously, and we have always had a great experience. While we have usually stayed in their western rooms, this time we opted to stay in a larger but older-style Japanese room on the 5th floor (Hana Mizu Ki). The room was very clean and spacious but a bit dated. The room comfortably accommodates 4 guests. This room overlooks the front of the Ryokan and the driveway, so once in a while you do hear some cars driving by. As always, the staff were extremely hospitable and gracious. They were especialy kind to our young child. The dinner meal was very delicious, and our host timed each of our dishes perfectly. The breakfast was unchanged from previous visits, and as always, delicious (especially their miso soup with small clams). The futons were really comfortable and provided great sleep from a long day of hiking and walking. Wado does provide a shuttle bus to and from the ryokan to Wado Kuroya station, which you will have to mention when making your reservation. If you visit Wado in the Chichibu region, do explore the surrounding areas such as Nagatoro or Mitzumine shrine. The entire Chichibu area has breathtaking mountain views and cozy, heartwarming foods.

Absolutely love this elegant and warm hotel. Really was a highlight of my trip in chichibu, or even in my two-week stay in Japan. Despite the little retro look on the outside, the interior is very well maintained, elegant and clean. Staff is all welcoming and very friendly. I felt warm already soon as I sat down enjoying the welcome tea. Onsen is very nice as expected, with natural river soundscape. The in-room outdoor bath isn’t an onsen but they provide us an onsen powder to mimic the one they had in their hotel, which is impressive! And the kaiseki dinner set in a private room is elegant and delicious. The menu is handwritten and felt very warm. Breakfast is the bomb too! I could peek at the pretty natural surroundings from the breakfast hall. 🌸 Truly beautiful ryokan offering very good omotenashi, I really enjoyed my stay and had a good time here. Thank you!

We stayed here in the summer of 2023. Paid around 70000 yen for a night with 2 meals, and was quite surprised at some of the poor service in this ryokan. We arrived by car, it was raining and a member of staff stood outside just stared at us without greeting or trying to hand out an umbrella to us (and there was a whole umbrella stand next to him too). Didn't try to help with the luggage at all, and then asked us to sit in a sofa in an area that's only reachable by going down a few steps (yes we were carrying out own luggage at that point), when there are other empty sofas that can be reached without taking any steps. The room was quite dated but was clean. Love the terrace and the greenery outside. The mattress was very hard though, it was worse than sleeping in a standard thin fudon. Dinner was another horrible experience. The food itself was fine, the serving staff tried his best and was nice, but we waited for over an hour to just to have the first few dishes and we have gotten so hungry just sitting there. Then suddenly they dumped the rest of the dishes to us in one go. It was the worst dining experience in a ryokan for me, regardless of price point. My partner noticed they were having a big group in the dining hall, so I guess their kitchen and serving staff got overwhelm? Anyway, this isn't somewhere I will go again if they don't improve on their service.

Great stay with all the extras. Booked a Japanese style room with a private outdoor hot tub. Room was comfy and the tub awesome. Service was truly outstanding and the dinner was almost too much food. Really relaxing and would stay here again. Very limited English, so be ready to have an adventure if you don’t speak the language.

Buko's old appearance, and you can see that it has been considerably eroded and thinned. I was curious and compared the image from 2011, when I first climbed it, with the current appearance of the mountain, and I could see that excavation was clearly progressing towards the foot of the mountain. I was surprised to hear an explanation of how Mt. Buko was formed, the types of limestone, and how limestone mining peaked in the 1990s, which is quite recent. It was also interesting to see the endemic plants and flowers, and to learn that among the animals that live in the mountains, there are Japanese macaques that live on the rocks, and the 30 minutes passed in the blink of an eye. Kannabi in Chichibu is a mountain where divine spirits are enshrined, and is the object of faith for many people, including villagers, as the mountain's sacred place of nature. When I traced the history of Mt. Buko, I found it interesting that the mountain's name changed several times before it came to be called the current "Mt. Buko." In ancient times, when people only used words and had no written language, they were called ``take'' or ``takeyama.'' During the era of the 10th Emperor Sujin (Kofun period), Chichibuhiko-no-mikoto was appointed to build the province of Chichibu, and at the beginning of the Chichibu period, it came to be called ``Chichibugatake''. When the Taiho Ritsuryo Code was enacted (701), the grandfather of Asaomi Hikita was appointed as the first provincial governor of Musashi Province. This name is given to it as ``Ojigadake''. During the Heian period, a manor called Bukosho was established at the foot of the mountain. Takemitsu was probably the name of the manor's developer. As a result, it came to be called ``Buguang Mountain.'' In 1235, Chichibu Shrine was struck by lightning and burst into flames. Since then, Myoken Daibosatsu has been enshrined at the same company. As a result, the name of Mt. Shintai changed from "Mt. Buko" to "Mt. Myoken." Nowadays, the legend that the name of the mountain became ``Mt. Buko'' is said to have been passed down to the people of Chichibu since the Genroku period, and has been passed down since the Genroku period. I'm doing it. Although its name has changed since ancient times, it has always been a symbol of Chichibu and has been a mountain that attracts people of faith. Staying time is about 30 minutes. Ogano Fossil Museum, located in Nagatoro, is known as the "birthplace of geology in Japan" due to its historical significance in geological research. The museum offers an enjoyable experience for both children and adults, showcasing the nature of the Chichibu region and a diverse range of living creatures from Saitama Prefecture. Visitors can explore a variety of fossils on display, including those from overseas and locally mined specimens.
(Translated by Google) I visited because I love looking at fossils. It's not a large facility, but it's a museum specializing in fossils. Many of the fossils were excavated locally, and some are from overseas, but it's romantic to think that this area was once the sea a long time ago. Also, from here you can see the impressive "Yobake" cliff, a natural monument. It seems that Miyazawa Kenji and his close friend, the poet Hosaka Yoshinai, visited Chichibu together, and there were letters to Hosaka on display. One thing that caught my attention was that there were two different versions of Hosaka's name written on a notice: Hosaka and Hosaka. I wondered which one was correct. I think Hosaka is probably correct. However, there are stones like shell mounds placed haphazardly outside, and there is no sign of where they were excavated, making it a very laid-back fossil museum (lol). Regardless of religious background, all are welcome to embrace the temple's spirituality and connect with the surrounding natural beauty.
A Buddhist temple you can schedule an overnight stay at. We participated in Japanese calligraphy, sutra chanting, zen meditation, etc. we also used the open air bath and the stay included food. The monk responsible for the stay is pretty good at English, so there was no problem. The overnight stay is available for both Japanese and foreign tourists. An amazing experience into Japanese Buddhism.

It was a wonderful experience to learn more about Buddhism. The monk leading the entire program is an exceptionally kind person who ensures you feel well taken care of. There are also a few volunteers who are attentive and assist with English, making everything more accessible. We had an amazing time engaging in activities such as walking, yoga, meditation, sutra chanting, and sutra copying, as well as enjoying delicious meals. One highlight was the beautiful, atmospheric outdoor onsen that added to the serene experience. We also had the opportunity to engage in conversations with remarkable and open-minded people, which made the experience even more enriching. I definitely recommend this experience. However, please keep in mind that the temple is quite old, and during this time of year, it’s wise to bring some warm clothes as the nights can get chilly.

What a truly amazing place! We arrived in the afternoon to bitter cold temple with snow on the ground. By breakfast time we were basking in the sun of a beautiful spring day. What a Temple of the Sun this really is! The calm welcome from the wonderful monk was perfectly understated. We were invited to join in Sutra copying, Sutra chanting and Zen meditation. Delicious vegetarian food was served and a wonderful sleep was had on the tatami mats. At ten o'clock at night we sat in the hot, outdoor bath gazing up at the stars. At sunrise we greeted the sun as it came up over the mountains and warmed us as immediately as a heater being switched on. Everything, including the incredibly isolated location, was so beautifully natural and understated. A place visited others can only dream of.

I stayed with my family for a night at Taiyoji in July 2017. Jyusokusan (the monk) was so peaceful, friendly, and kind that we really felt at home immediately. We enjoyed shako (calligraphy), Temple-made vegetarian food, walking dogs, zen meditation, and houwa (monk's story telling). Rotenburo (outside onsen) was great too. It was totally off the grid and we had a peaceful time at Taiyoji. We had the precious moments spent in the kitchen helping Jyusokusan prepared the dinner. We will return for sure. Jyusokusan is looking for cleaning volunteers as he has been doing everything from cooking, cleaning, picking/dropping guests at the station and offering speech and meditations. You will be filled with gratitude!

From the terrace seats, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Nagatoro, and in the summer it is particularly popular as a relaxing space surrounded by the sounds of the river and greenery. However, in the strong summer sun, it can be difficult to avoid the direct sunlight without a roof, so a sunshade would be more comfortable. This is a recommended spot for those who want to spend some relaxing time surrounded by the nature of Nagatoro. When you visit, be sure to take precautions against the sun and enjoy a comfortable stay. However, it is in full sun, so it is extremely hot in the summer🥵 It is best to bring a parasol, a fan, a folding fan, or a portable fan, or even all of them The best time to visit is during the cooler months of Golden Week or when the leaves change color Although it is called a terrace, there is no cafe It feels like it is still under development If you want to relax, I recommend bringing your own food and drink or preparing it around the ropeway station There is an inner shrine at the back of the terrace, a well-maintained forest, and a teahouse, so it is a cool and pleasant place The peak of Hodo Mountain is about 50m above the terrace, so if you have time, please visit it (Original) “激アツ絶景スポット” 平日11:00頃来訪 宝登山ロープウェイ駅から徒歩5分くらい 絶景間違いない!

Hodo, I decided to take a short break. [Terrace Atmosphere] - Is this a new space built by the Chichibu Railway? It might be the newest of the shops and facilities at Mt. Hodo. - The viewing space was conveniently located, offering a truly panoramic view of the city. There are also about six or seven large two-seater sofas, making it a great spot for couples, married couples, and families to relax. - You might not be able to stay there for long if the sun is too strong, but on cloudy or shady days, it's cool and comfortable. - There's a food truck selling drinks. I enjoyed the view while sipping a ¥500 Hodoade (lemonade made with Nanko plums). Please hand over your trash to the staff after you've finished your drink. There's a white door sculpture along the way, making it a great photo spot. Maybe it was late, but the main sofa and this white door were empty, so I was able to relax. I sat on the sofa for about 30 minutes to refresh myself. It was a cool time, and the weather was cloudy, neither too hot nor too cold, so it was just right. There are tables, but there aren't any shops nearby, so you have to buy something from the shop below and bring it here. They have drinks, miso potatoes, croquettes, and other items, so it might be a good place for a relaxing tea break. However, there may be shifts during busy times, so you'll need to give up your seat to the next person. If you come on a weekday, you'll probably be able to relax. It's a real shame that I couldn't buy the original drink sold at the rest house near the ropeway and take a picture on the terrace😢 If they had sold it on the terrace, I would definitely have bought it😭 (Original)

The route to the left after leaving the base station is the closest. There seem to be counter seats, but there was a rattan bench available, so I sat down there. It seems that there would have been cushions if the weather was good (they had been removed). The view would have been good, but it was hazy that day and Mount Buko was not visible. Although there was a breeze, there was nothing to block the sunlight, so I took a break and left. Surprisingly, all the seats were taken. Buddhist temple
Nestled in the serene landscape of Chichibu, Nosaka-ji, also known as Chichibu Sanjūyon Kannon Reishō #12, is a captivating temple belonging to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Founded by Arai Sokichi and later moved to its current location in 1741, this sacred site boasts an impressive Sanmon gate that dates back to the Edo period.
Unlike many temples in urban Saitama, you can see right into this temple at the foot of Hitsujiyama. Amazing wooden carvings on the temple and interesting wooden statues and jizo. Free parking for about ten cars.

You'll see the tower gate about 100 meters ahead, across the cherry blossom-lined approach. The main hall was destroyed in a fire at the end of the Meiji period, but the mountain gate remained. Inside the Sanmon gate are dotted with Kannon statues that will grant various wishes, including the "Azukari Kannon," which will take care of your anger, illness, and worries. The principal image is the "Shokanzeon Bodhisattva." Nosakadera is also well known as a flower temple. Banba Street serves as the main thoroughfare connecting Chichibu and Seibu Chichibu. It portrays a distinctive blend of architectural styles, encompassing both traditional Showa-era structures and modern edifices. During Golden Week, visitors are treated to vibrant taiko drum performances along this bustling street, filling the air with resonant beats that evoke a captivating sense of power.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of dangerous driving by unscrupulous local drivers. I think the general public in Chichibu generally have bad manners.
