Outstanding connectivity, excellent maintenance, and seamless access to nearly every part of Japan. The signage system is the best, you’ll find helpful signs at every step, making navigation incredibly easy.
My return flight was from Narita Airport, which is quite a distance from Haneda Airport. I took the Narita Express from Tokyo Station. It was super convenient and dropped me directly at Narita Airport Station, which is connected to the terminals. The frequency is good, and it’s one of the best options compared to taking a taxi or a bus.

By far the most intricate and very well designed section of the Tokyo Metropolitan area. This building was very popular with crowds and still offered many great locations for shopping and dinning. The bustle of the building was very quick but the directions were almost always in English. This is a must see in Tokyo!

First-time visitors—use Google Maps! The Metro and Train stations are stacked, and it can be daunting for newcomers. After one night (and three hours getting lost solo), one day facing my travel traumas, and another day making only minor mistakes—I finally feel confident I won’t get lost again.
It’s very complex for foreigners, yet incredibly organized and impressive. Pro tip: No talking on any rail system. It’s part of their culture to respect communal spaces—even if you’re shoulder to shoulder with five strangers during rush hour.
A must-experience—unless tight spaces and touching strangers aren’t your thing.
Crowded station confusing for foreigners, but the best to board a speedtrain (shinkanzen) or to go to Narita.
For shinkanzen or bus to Narita ask the taxi to go to Yaesu side. For Narita express train you have to go to the opposite Marinouchi side! Be at the station well in advance.
Speedtrains to various destinations depart every 10-15 min, do not bother with seat reservation. Nozomi cars 1-2 are not reserved, 1-6 Hikari, Kodama. You can board Nozomi with railpass (no check onboard). Every car has luggage space for large suitcases behind the first/last seat row.
There are small waiting rooms with AC and small shops on the platforms.
Buses to Narita depart from the Yeasu side bus station stand No 7 every 10 min (1500 JPY). Tickets are not sold in advance, same day tickets only. At nearby counter booth you can pay in cash or card. To buy ticket on the bus you need IC Suica!
For Narita express train it is best to buy in advance (reserved seat needed) at a machine assisted by staff, as it is tricky for foreigners (as online). The machines for Narita train tickets are placed on both sides of the station.
Crossing from one side of the station to the other is a long walk (10 min) in crowd, so arrive at the suitable side.
Tokyo Station is one of the busiest places I’ve ever been, but somehow it all runs like a well-oiled machine. It’s a perfect example of controlled chaos — thousands of people moving through the space, yet everything is clean, organized, and remarkably efficient. I was honestly overwhelmed at first, but once I took a breath and followed the signs, it all started to make sense.
The amount of food available inside is almost ridiculous (in the best way). PLENTY of options, which is on I believe the East? side of the station. Along with a row of giftshops, I forgot what they called it, but you can't miss it.
From quick snacks to full meals, you could easily get lost in the station’s many underground food halls and still not try everything. There’s a lot to explore, so arriving early is a smart move, especially if you're unfamiliar with the layout. It gives you time to find your platform, maybe grab a bite, and even store your bags.
Speaking of which, the locker system is amazing — easy to use and super convenient if you’re carrying luggage or shopping bags. I had a Shinkansen to catch, and the reserved seats were a lifesaver. I used a kiosk to print my ticket, which saved time and stress. Despite the crowds, Tokyo Station delivers a smooth, well-managed experience. It’s intense, but it works.

The most important thing to know before visiting: you cannot enter the Imperial family’s residence or the main palace buildings. The only section open to the public is this vast garden, which covers part of the former Edo Castle, once the seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
The gardens feature wide lawns, traditional stone walls, and calm walking paths that feel worlds away from the city’s noise. The layout still preserves the remains of the honmaru (main enclosure) and ninomaru (secondary enclosure) of Edo Castle.
The iconic Nijubashi Bridge, visible from the outer grounds, is one of Tokyo’s most photographed landmarks — especially during special imperial events like the Emperor’s Birthday or New Year’s Greeting.

I did not hire a tour guide or purchase an admission ticket. I simply went to explore the area. The grounds are vast, spacious, and beautifully maintained. The landscaping is impeccable, as is typical in Tokyo. It is a popular spot for walking and jogging.

We had the quick visit to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, and even though visitors can’t fully access the inner areas, the experience was still memorable. The palace grounds are beautifully preserved and give a sense of calm right in the middle of the city. The park is covered with vibrant green grass, neat bonsai trees, and wide open spaces that are perfect for a peaceful stroll. Standing there, you can see Tokyo’s modern buildings rising in the background, which makes the view even more scenic. It’s a quiet place that feels like a hidden pocket of nature in the heart of the city, even if you’re just visiting the outer grounds.
This review is meant to the gardens around the palace. I couldn’t really find the palace itself, as all the trails that led to it were blocked. Some people say you can have guided tours twice a day to visit the exterior of the palace, so that might be an option, but I believe the palace itself is a newish building and unassuming.
However, the gardens or park around the palace are huge, and you start to see some autumn colours (end of October 2025). I took a long walk there, and it was very peaceful. There are also toilets at various sites (I used the ones by the entrance next to Starbucks and they were clean; no paper towels or hand dryer though so bring a washcloth).
I saw many people enjoying the good weather and just relaxing.
So I wouldn’t worry about the opening times of the palace (they might seem very strict), as I was, because you’re probable only going to visit the gardens anyway.
It’s a great place to walk around and to learn some Japanese culture. Depends on your purposes, I suggest spending at least 2-hr to walk around. The walk is about 3-5 miles to cover the best part of the Japan Royal Palace.
Visiting the Imperial Palace is a must! Once the heart of imperial Japan, the grounds are beautifully maintained. You'll be impressed by the sheer size of the walls and various protective features surrounding the palace. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and anyone wanting to explore Japan's royal heritage!
Absolutely beautiful. It’s pretty cheap to buy the tickets on Klook and just pass the line. The wait isn’t terrible to wait for the elevator but the last 3 floors are stairs only and people can be a bit ripe so be prepared for that.
We visited the place on a Saturday, and did find a lot of tourists. But the place is huge and calm, so you will enjoy walking here. It is well maintained and can be explored without a guide as well. A must visit if you’re in Tokyo!

Yasukuni Jinja, situated in Kudankita, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, is a Shinto shrine honoring the souls of Japanese military personnel who perished in conflicts and wars since the Meiji era. The shrine pays tribute to approximately 2,466,000 spirits who sacrificed their lives for Japan.
Founded by Emperor Meiji in June 1869 to commemorate those who died in service for Japan.
The shrine contains names of almost 2,5 million men including one thousand war criminals there of whom 12 were charged with class A crimes.
Because of this controversy the last two emperors never visited the shrine.
There's also a military museum adjacent to the shrine.

A beautiful and vast shrine with a presence. The large tori gate greeting you as you enter the shrine makes this temple unique among the temple in Tokyo. When you enter the temple, you are greeted with a large public area with many sections to explore. Going near the end of the day is unique as you get to see the sun setting over the tori gate and the temple.
It's beautiful. The shrine is dedicated to the respect of all those who died fighting for Japan from the Meiji Era onward. There is the shrine proper, the Yushukan a museum to preserve the memory of the kami, an archive, a beautiful garden and several monuments.
The shrine is very important and there is a lot of people there during the day. The best time to be there is very early in the morning.
Very big temple with - parking, vending machines, museum, food stalls and largely many festivals and ceremonies held very frequently. One of the best places to visit and experience the difference - pleasant and lively location with lot of Ginko trees and tree shades to beat the heat while in summer, beat the cold with fantastic views in winter, thrilling views during autumn with the color changes … a place one should never miss.
Very beautiful and peaceful place. They were doing construction before an event so there was scaffolding, but even that was pretty. Inside the museum is a nice gift shop and a pretty public toilet. Quick note, if you want to take a photo of the shrine, take it from the side near the gravel (or the guard will politely remind you).
Very beautiful shrine. The yearly Mitama Matsuri is a must see in Tokyo. Japanese people honor the spirits of the dead on these days. The shrine is decorated with 30,000 lanterns during this time.
This place is a sacred place for Japan. The spirits of the dead of Japanese solders from ww2 are deified here since the end of the war. They devoted themselves to their sweet homeland. Respect here and never be impolite. You all can come here! This is open for everyone and good park with greens! There are huge gate and Shrine. You would feel very sacred atmosphere! You can buy fortune stuffs here. And there are museum for Japanese ancestors who devoted themselves to Japan!!!
True to its reputation, this shrine has some interesting galleries and exhibitions on the more sensitive topics. But otherwise, it’s a pretty huge shrine/park with seats every couple of steps for you to rest and enjoy the atmosphere.

Hibiya Park, Japan's oldest Western-style park, is located in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward. Spanning over 161,636.66 square meters, it was originally a military parade ground before transforming into a picturesque urban oasis. Situated near the Imperial Palace and surrounded by bustling districts, the park offers lush gardens, seasonal blooms, and a Japanese garden. Visitors can enjoy flower beds, outdoor music venues, public halls as well as beautifully maintained lawns and ponds.
Peaceful, Stunning and Calm. Was a nice way to get out of the busy city environment and sit down and relax. There’s a rich history about the park itself where you can read about at various signposts scattered around while enjoying the tranquility!

Beautiful park with both a nice stroll and a bigger main grass field. There are at times stalls here that sells greenery and other stuffs.
Seemed like a lot of families with children came here to play around! The walk around the park is also nice and quiet.
The park is beautiful and the day we went there were vendors selling charming handmade items, foods, books and projects. I would definitely return. Some areas had a pronounced sewage smell, but we could not identify the source.
Hibiya park has its own history.
Quite a good place to rest and enjoy, has many benches to sit, and offers many historical artifacts about this place, there is a piece of wall from Meiji era, you would love to walk around and enjoy the nature and history. On its own its sort of small open air museum.
Nice public space area a stones throw from Tokyo station and the imperial palace - often there are events there- especially in the weekend when there is often concerts and food fairs

Parque Hibiya is a lush, serene oasis tucked right in the bustling heart of Tokyo. Strolling along the winding paths, I felt completely transported by the vibrant seasonal flowers, from the delicate cherry blossoms blooming in spring to the fiery maples of autumn. The peacefulness of the two large Western-style flower gardens, showcased by colorful tulips and roses, provided perfect spots for quiet reflection.
The highlight was resting by the pond with its charming bronze crane fountain, watching graceful wild birds while soaking up the tranquility. Nearby, I caught a lively outdoor concert at the open-air venue, blending nature and culture seamlessly. The 400-year-old ginkgo tree stood tall like a proud guardian of the park’s past, a living testament to resilience.

Edo Castle Ruins, originally built in 1457 by Ota Dokan and later used by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his Shogunate, have transformed into the Tokyo Imperial Palace. The castle grounds are now mostly occupied by the palace, with nearby seats of power such as the National Diet Building and the Supreme Court. Although destroyed in fires in 1657, the site is still a popular attraction during cherry blossom season due to its beautiful gardens.

Amazing place to visit, if you are an enjoyer of history you will have a great time. The grounds are beautiful and the view is incredible from atop the castle site. Definitely come here if you can.
Great free historical outdoor experience. Very close to Tokyo train station. Well manicured park with paved paths throughout the attraction. Clean bathrooms and air conditioned space on the site. Plenty of fact boards located throughout. Takes about an hour to walk through. It would take about 2 hours if you read all the fact boards. Easily accessible for kids and the walking impaired. Close to restaurants and shopping. Free to public.

The base of a castle that was supposed to be reconstructed a long time ago, but it was decided not to. It is a nice view from the upper level
A very pleasant walk through a big park. I wouldn't call them ruins as much as big walls made from large stones, still looked cool though. There are a few flower gardens and a wide open field in the middle area, looks like a nice place for a picnic, or a nice place to toss a frisbee. I think you could easily spend an hour just walking through the whole park.

Reiyukai Shakaden Temple, a modern temple affiliated with Inner Trip Reiyukai (ITR), stands out as one of the most impressive structures in the city. Its unique design, resembling a blend of an Aztec temple and a large woodlouse, seamlessly integrates into central Tokyo. Inside, visitors are greeted by opulent crushed velvet decor and friendly monks.
As a SciFi fan I was instantly hooked on this amazing piece of architecture.
Don’t believe the ones writing Star Wars/ Star Trek temple, this is pure and simple StarGate. And it’s amazing. (I totally understand why was used as inspiration for Goa’uld architecture … would be too huge coincidence not to be)
We could not visit it inside as it was closed for a private event but I know for sure where I want to return in Japan.

A uniquely designed temple is located near the Azabudai hills. I did not visit the temple, but I observed it during my visit to the hills. The temple is situated in close proximity to the hills.
This giant Cult complex, with a pyramid-shaped roof, looks like it’s straight out of a Spielberg movie, but it is actually the headquarters of a Buddhist sect that claims to promote world peace.
Despite its forbidding exterior, the solo temple worker welcomed us warmly and even offered free Japanese lessons - but only if we joined. (Hard pass...)
It housed a giant Buddha (no pics) carved from ancient camphor wood, as well as a giant water reservoir? ...that the city can use in an emergency.
Reiyukai Shakaden Temple – A Modern Spiritual Landmark in Tokyo

I saw this building from the Tokyo Tower and was compelled by the unique architecture to check it out. It’s not really a “touristy” venue, but if you’re intrigued by churches it’s free to walk around (it was essentially empty when I visited). Near the main worship room / chapel, there were some brochures in several languages explaining the religion, which was invaluable. Other than that, you’re really on your own to make any sense of anything. The main shrine is made of wood, so isn’t visible except during official meetings as it’s in a climate controlled ‘vault’ the rest of the time.
Independence Day celebrations of Sri Lanka was conducted here in Kotani hall by the Sri Lanka Embassy in Japan. It is a religious place for sermons and Buddhist practices but has separate halls for functions etc. Kotani hall was spacious and can accommodate around 600+_ people at one go I think. Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, the visit proved that the Skytree’s charm doesn’t depend on clear skies — it’s a symbol of modern Japan and an experience full of fascination from start to finish.
The journey begins at the base, where Skytree Town offers a lively mix of shops, restaurants, and attractions. The atmosphere is welcoming and full of energy, with visitors from all over the world. The elevator ride to the observation decks is a thrill in itself — smooth, fast, and accompanied by beautiful lights that build anticipation as you ascend to the top.
When I reached the Tembo Deck and Tembo Galleria, the city below was wrapped in mist and soft rain, creating a mysterious, almost dreamlike view of Tokyo. The clouds moved quickly, sometimes revealing flashes of the Sumida River, Asakusa, and the endless urban landscape. The reflections on the glass and the quietness of the rainy day made the experience even more serene.
There’s also much to enjoy indoors: the café serves excellent desserts and coffee, and the souvenir shops offer high-quality gifts with unique Skytree designs. Staff members were extremely friendly and patient, helping visitors take photos and explaining details about the structure.
Leaving the Skytree, I realized that even without the perfect weather, the visit had a special atmosphere — calm, elegant, and deeply memorable. Rain or shine, Tokyo Skytree stands tall as one of Japan’s most inspiring landmarks, offering a beautiful perspective not only over the city, but over the harmony of technology, art, and spirit that defines Tokyo itself.

If you’re visiting Tokyo, I definitely recommend checking out Tokyo Skytree honestly, it’s way more impressive than Tokyo Tower! It’s much taller, and the view you get from the top is absolutely amazing. You can see the entire city spread out beneath you, and it’s such a cool experience.
Personally, I think nighttime is the best time to go. The city lights look incredible, and it’s not as crowded as during sunset or daytime. Sunset can get super packed it’s hard to even find a good spot to look out! During the day there are usually more families and kids around, so it can feel a bit busier.
If you go, make sure to visit both observation floors they’re both worth it! And if you happen to go during the day, check out one of the fancy restaurants up there. Just remember, they have a dress code no running shoes or sporty clothes. Dress up a little, like you’re going out on a nice date!
Overall, Skytree is a fun and unforgettable experience, especially if you love great views and city lights. 🌃
A must visit landmark in Tokyo! Buying tickets at the self service machines was quick and easy, and the elevator ride up to the observation deck took only seconds.
The Tokyo Skytree has two observation levels: the Tembo Deck (350m) and the Tembo Galleria (450m). From the Tembo Deck, you get a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of Tokyo. On clear days, you can even spot Mt. Fuji! Unfortunately, it was rainy and windy during my visit, and I could actually feel the tower swaying a bit, quite an experience! Still, the rainy view of Tokyo, with its neat streets and dense rooftops, had a special charm.
The Tembo Galleria features a glass floor section, standing on it and looking down at the tiny buildings below was both thrilling and unforgettable.
After coming down, I visited the souvenir shop, as expected, Japan’s packaging design is beautiful and tempting. Hard not to buy something!
Right next to the Skytree is Tokyo Solamachi, a large shopping complex with the Sumida Aquarium, restaurants, ice cream shops, Pokémon Center, Kirby Café, and even a children’s play area. Lots to see, eat, and shop, you could easily spend the whole day here!
Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s tallest building at 634 meters, is truly impressive. You can go up to 450 meters with a super-fast elevator, and the view from the top is stunning — on a clear day, you can even see Mount Fuji.
There’s also a glass floor area, which could be fun, but with hundreds of people crowded around, you can barely enjoy it.
Unfortunately, the experience didn’t really feel worth the long wait — over an hour in line to go up, and almost 40 minutes to get down. Going up was fairly organized, but coming down was total chaos.
If I had known in advance how long the waiting would be, I wouldn’t have gone in at all.
Also, don’t bother buying your ticket online — those with on-site tickets get in faster because online tickets must be exchanged for paper ones first, which makes no sense.
Very disappointing. To start, they give people the opportunity to pre purchase tickets for a certain time and recommend on their website that you do so. To us it didn’t give any advantage as people who didn’t have pre purchased tickets just waltzed in and bought them. Further to this, the amount of tickets sold per time slot is far too high leaving you to queue for 30-45 minutes on the ground floor alone just to get admitted.
Secondly, once you’re admitted after (45 minutes) you are packed into an elevator like sardines to a point it’s almost uncomfortable and unhygienic. We understand trying to get people up as fast as possible but this comes back to the underlying issue of selling too many tickets for each time slot.
Once you make it to the deck (350m) you’re are greeted by a view of the backs of people’s heads. There isn’t a lot of opportunity to see the attraction you pay to see because of the sheer number of people inside. You may get fleeting glimpses but you have to really fight for a spot at the front to get a decent look at the view.
After this we decided to go up to the gallery (450m) which we purchased with our ticket. And guess what… more queues. The queue to go up to the gallery alone took another 15 minutes and once we were up there it was the same story. Over crowded.
And then we get to the worst part… to get out you have to stand in a queue yup that’s right, another queue. To get back from the gallery to the deck we waited 25 minutes and then once we were on the deck we queued another 25 minutes to take the elevator down to the bottom.
Overall yes… the attraction is cool however the experience is terrible. Once we got to the top the first thing we wanted to do was leave as there was an unpleasant number of people around. If you plan to go here, go during the day.
If you enjoy waiting in lines this is the place for you!
I prepurchase tickets to guarantee being able to enter in time for sunset. I would highly recommend doing that. It was pretty crowded but we got a space next to the window and it was well worth the effort. It was beautiful with Mt Fuji being the star. City is so pretty and night.
Such a great place to visit and pay to enter the tallest area. We visited early afternoon and the wait time was only 15 minutes. The staff were friendly, great personality, and well organized. Each section was great, not too crowded. I was able to see Mt. Fuji so that made me excited. Currently there's a Toy Story theme, so great exhibits to see. Many photo ops available. Their souvenir shop was good and had a variety of items. Honestly you should visit one paid observatory and Tokyo Skytree I recommend, plus Asakusa had many sightseeing opportunities. There's a mall connected too, but did have a chance to visit. There's a metro line near there too.
We visited Tokyo Skytree around 5 PM. The line moved quite fast, which was nice, but once inside it was extremely crowded. It was difficult to fully enjoy the beautiful view or take pictures without waiting for people to move. The upper deck, though higher and promising a better view, was even busier. At one point, we couldn’t move at all, as the queue to go down took up more than half of the space on that floor. Overall, it felt a bit overwhelming despite the stunning views and beautiful tower. Also highly recommend to buy tickets in advance !!

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, a stunning architectural marvel designed by Kenzo Tange, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the vibrant city of Tokyo. This iconic complex features two impressive towers, each offering free observatories on their 45th floors that provide breathtaking panoramic views of Shinjuku's skyline and beyond. Recently, the buildings have gained even more attention due to the TOKYO Night & Light event, showcasing the world's largest permanent projection mapping display on their exterior.
Both North and South Observatory are at the 45th storey. The lift entrance is only at Building No. 1, ground floor. The lift takes 55 seconds to reach the top. Mount Fuji will be visible from both towers on a clear day. South tower has a grand piano open to public for performance from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm.

Incredible nightly video shows with music on the building. Has a fantastic observation deck on the top of both buildings. On the ground floor there is a small mall with two of the best visitors information centers in Tokyo. Visit during the daytime to learn about Tokyo and overlook the city then visit at night to see show and a very different view from the observation deck.
Not a lot of tourists know about this attraction, which is completely free!!

The fact that there is a public piano for performances makes it more mesmerizing.

An unforgettable (and free!) Tokyo experience!
Hard to believe that such a professional and well-managed observatory is completely free to visit! The panoramic views of Tokyo are truly breathtaking—even though I couldn’t catch Mt. Fuji due to cloudy weather, the experience was still remarkable.
What made the atmosphere even more special was the public piano—each performer played so beautifully, and the queue was organized very smoothly. Small details like a free water fountain and reasonably priced vending machines made the visit even more comfortable.
If you’re visiting Tokyo, this is a must-see spot! Can’t recommend it enough.

Unlike incorrectly recommended Shinjuku L Sun Tower, the Metropolitan Government building has a free observation deck on the 45th floor. You can view almost every direction from there. The have gifts and refreshments for sale too. Highly worth the visit IMHO.
One of the best observatories in Tokyo, with two separate observatory decks, a north one and a south one. Both have amazing views of the city at just the right height. The south observatory even has a piano designed by Yayoi Kusama free for your playing (five minute limit). Best of all, both decks are free!
One of the best observation decks in Tokyo! We went up to the North Observatory only, and the view was absolutely amazing — and it’s free! We’re glad we came. Honestly, the North deck alone is enough; no need to visit both. Highly recommended!

The Edo-Tokyo Museum, which opened its doors in 1993, is a captivating destination for anyone interested in the rich history of Tokyo during the Edo period. Nestled in Ryogoku, it complements other attractions like the newly established Hokusai Museum, dedicated to the legendary ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.

The Edo-Tokyo Museum is a fascinating place to visit. You get to step back in time and explore the city's past with incredibly detailed, life-sized replicas of old buildings and daily scenes. It's a wonderful way to learn about Tokyo's history and culture in a really immersive way.
The Edo Tokyo museum was great to visit. The architecture on the exterior of the building is absolutely incredible. The price of entry is also very reasonable. We came around 10am on a Sunday of a holiday weekend in early May and we only had to wait 10 minutes to buy tickets. There are numerous displays that characterize the evolution of Tokyo, including its culture, economy, feudal reigns, etc. There are also many beautiful paintings and miniature replicas of communities that are worth seeing. We were glad to have purchased entry to the special exhibit and it was easily worth the price so buy the combo ticket! We didn't use any audio guides or guided tours but have read that they are good. Plaques have titles of objects in English but explanations are all in Japanese so use guide options if you are a museum buff.
Great museum for all ages! My wife and I went for an afternoon to escape the Tokyo heat and spent about 2.5 hours here. Tickets were 600 Yen each for the main exhibit. You can drop your bags on 1F or 7F (7F also has restaurant and library, 1F has cafes as well). The miniatures really show detail and such a small scale over a large area. You travel through the past couple hundred years of Tokyo in a very engaging way.
May 2019 my visit to the museum!!An amazing museum of Edo period (From ~1500 until ~1800 year) Incredible and infinite exhibits... They presented life in different aspects of daily life in Japan, There were also many models with the structure of an Edo period area!! Also incredible were the buildings and the figures of people in real dimensions that presented the routine of the time!! I also loved the interactivity they provided.... I remember there were 3 small rooms with how the lamps evolved, it was a real revolution every time... Great experience!
I should emphasize that the museum was an architectural epic, spotlessly clean and there were several ways to tour!!Thank you Japan... Unforgettable experience from the look of the building, the perfect organization and tour even the souvenirs I bought were wonderful....!!
This is one of the best museums I have ever visited. We learnt so much about the history of Tokyo and Japan. With replicas of so many different architectural structures, it is fun and educational. Spare some 3-4 hours for this place. Also there is a cool Japanese version of magic tricks show performed by every hour.

The Museum is has two portions, one is Edo period and the another portion is how the Tokyo is formed after Edo to current period.
The artwork was simply mind blowing, even the small details were perfect, all are miniature product of old Japan within their residential areas, cars, clothes and how westernisation has established in Japan and many more.
It is totally worth the visit, people who love history and who don’t like history will like these art works, kindly pay a visit you don’t regret.
Very impressive museum with lots of ancient Japan historic exhibition. Very unique long and high escalator straight up to the 6th floor.They provide the translation device under a deposit which can claim back, easier for us to understand in depth of the story behind. Very caring place as they even provide free drinking fountain to public inside the museum. I spend 4 hours inside the museum but still have not finished the museum exploration.

The Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center is a modern facility designed by Kengo Kuma, located near the Sensoji Temple's Kaminarimon gate. It offers free guided tours, currency exchange, and an information desk. The eight-story building features a covered observation deck with stunning views of Sensoji Temple. This facility provides information about Asakusa, but there are many spaces where you can sit down for free, so it is just right for a break when you are tired. There is a terrace and cafe on the top floor, where you can view the Kaminarimon gate and Sky Tree from just the right angle. It is open all year round.
Designed by Kengo Kuma, the building is a wonderful example of Japanese culture with its house-shaped laminations and vertical louvers, but also with a modern novelty. The house shape on the exterior is not merely decorative, but is reflected in the sloping floors of the interior exhibition rooms, and the space between the roof and the upper floor is effectively used as a space for equipment.

The Asakusa Culture and Tourist Information Center serves as an excellent first stop for your visit to Asakusa. Located directly across from the famous Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), it offers free panoramic views and comprehensive tourist services .
Free Observation Terrace: The 8th-floor Observation Terrace is a major highlight, offering a fantastic free view of the Asakusa area, including a direct view down Nakamise-dori towards the Senso-ji Temple and a clear view of the Tokyo Skytree . There is also a cafe where you can enjoy a drink while taking in the scenery .
This building is very close to Asakusa Station. Before heading to Sensoji Temple or other attractions, it’s a good idea to stop by here for information. The front desk provides English support.

Best place to see Asakusa! They're open until late for you night shot junkies and it's all free. Just be aware that you won't be the only one there, no tripods allowed and you need to avoid taking photos through the double glass, but there are a few spots where you can get that shot you want.
They offer a free observation deck for the temple and skytree. They also have a cafe where you can chill overlooking Sensoji.
Other than it's function as a tourist information centre to this area, it's actually a really beautiful piece of architecture by Kengo Kuma, one of Japanese most famous architects. You can see the details of the timber fins designed and bolt shading the heat.

Visited March 2024. A convention center located in Chiyoda Tokyo close to Tokyo Station. I just happened to be in the area and didn't visit for a particular event. Either way, you are able to visit and see the dramatic atrium. There's also some food options in the courtyard.
It’s connected to Tokyo station so you won’t miss it. Great architecture, feels awesome just to sit inside and stare at the space inside the building.
One of the most photogenic buildings in Tokyo and that means something. The light, the lines, the shadows, all play a huge role in building the inside atmosphere during the visit.
I went to see Marvel Infinity with a live orchestra in Hall A, and it was awesome! No matter where you sit you can see and hear perfectly. Previously, I went to see Jurassic Park also with a live orchestra and it was also a great experience.
Saw a play in here, the seats are comfy, the sound was echoing and the surroundings were beautiful.

The Nezu Museum, situated in the upscale Aoyama district, houses an extensive private collection of pre-modern Japanese and East Asian art. The museum features a diverse range of items including Chinese bronzes, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, and archaeological materials. It is located just a short walk from Omotesando Station in an area known for its architectural showcase streets and international boutiques.

The museum is situated in an upscale neighborhood, with high-end boutiques nearby.
During my visit, the featured exhibit was Chinese Paintings and Medieval Japanese Ink-Wash Paintings—a beautifully curated display of exquisite works.
There were also five smaller exhibits showcasing ancient relics. The collection was impressive, though modest in size.
The museum’s architecture and grounds were a treat in themselves. I especially enjoyed the beautifully landscaped gardens. Insect repellent was thoughtfully provided at the garden entrance.

Architectural style of the main building is modern Japanese.
The breath of exhibition is small which there are only dozens of exhibits in each room.
The outdoor garden is beautiful and I consider it more exciting than the indoor exhibition.
The place would be better to visit in autumn or spring. I went in mid-October, but it was very hot and humid. It gets quite crowded, so it’s best to avoid peak hours. The exhibition was not a wide range of items. The café also had a long queue, and the food selection could be more varied.
The Nezu Museum in Tokyo’s Aoyama district is a serene cultural gem. While photography is not allowed inside the museum itself, the experience is unforgettable.
Children enjoy free admission, making it a great family-friendly destination.

I arrived right at 10am when it opened and there was a bit of a line to get in but it went really fast (I didn’t pre-purchase tickets).
It’s a magical place. The exhibition is not big but fascinating and beautifully curated. The architecture is impressive, and the museum garden itself is a true work of art. You can buy your ticket in advance to ensure entry.

✅There was about a 20–30 minute wait to use the cafe and if you would like a window seat, you can let the staff know and they will put you on the waiting list for it.

During my previous trip, I only had a chance to use the museum cafe and couldn’t explore the exhibitions due to my flight schedule. With that regret in mind, I returned to Tokyo to finally visit the museum.
The unique atmosphere of the museum was truly impressive, and the inner garden was absolutely beautiful. I especially enjoyed the serene and refined ambiance of a Japanese summer, which made the experience unforgettable.

Kanda Shrine, also known as Kanda Myojin, is a revered Shinto shrine located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. It has a rich history dating back over 1,000 years and is considered the collective guardian deity for 108 neighborhood associations in areas such as Nihonbashi, Akihabara, and Marunouchi.
Went to Kanda Myoujin Shrine, and it was such a pleasant experience. Despite expecting it to be crowded, it wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be. There was a festival happening at the time, adding a vibrant touch to the experience. I also tried some delicious street food nearby, which was a fun bonus! The combination of the beautiful shrine, the festive atmosphere, and tasty snacks made for a wonderful day out. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area!

Lovely shrine with a large main building with many smaller buildings around it. A visitor centre is built to the side and a museum can be found at the back of the shrine grounds. It seems like wedding ceremonies can also be arranged here.
However, this place feels very commercialised. I'm not sure how I should feel about a place of worship being commercialised to this extent...
This shrine is open 24 hours a day, so you can come to worship at any time. It also appears as a setting in anime, making it a must-visit spot for travelers who love Japanese animation and history 😊😊😊
As there was an annual festival there, I went there with friends. Due to light rain, there weren't so many visitors as expected. With some money offering, I prayed to its god for the success in my business. There were some music performances, beating Japanese drum playing old Japanese music with Japanese guitars and bamboo flutes.
Make sure to buy the famous Amazake at the entrance for 350 yen.
An interesting temple situated in the middle of tall office and residential buildings. It doesn't seem to be as touristy as other similar temples which can be considered a good thing for most visitors. I'd say its worth a visit if you are in the area.
A lovely shrine, especially at night. It gave me the feeling of Spirited Away, like stepping in the spiritual world. (I accidentally came across it when I was walking back to my hotel at night)
In close proximity from akhihabra this is a beautiful shrine. Very peaceful. There is a bit of Climbing stairs as it’s on elevated ground.

I had a fantastic shopping experience at KITTE mall. The atmosphere is stylish and welcoming, making it a great spot to explore. I was especially impressed by the thoughtful store layouts and the quality of the products. Although some items are on the pricier side, the overall experience is worth it. I would definitely love to visit again and spend more time discovering the hidden gems in KITTE. Highly recommend it!

Lots of upscale stores. Good food options in basement. The star of the show goes to the free museum inside. It's an EXCELLENT way to spend time and enjoy a neat experience right near Toyko station.
The Kitte building itself is architecturally speaking quite interesting with it's triangular shape, glass roof and tiled exterior in "Tokyo light beige".
In addition, the former postmaster's office on the 4th floor, which is open to the public, is quite a unique touch. One cannot only sense the atmosphere of past times - and even write some letters & postcards at reserved tables - but the view to the historic Tokyo Station building is simply stunning. Great picture taking spot and really gives you a sense of places & periods "mashing" together.
So, definitely recommended to visit the 4th floor for sightseeing, but the rest of the shops are not worth visiting IMHO: mostly heavily overpriced tourist stuff and chain restaurants. There are many, many better shopping options in Tokyo.
I went to KITTE Marunouchi near Tokyo Station and really enjoyed the visit. The place has a nice mix of shops and restaurants, and it feels modern but still relaxing to walk around. I especially liked the rooftop garden – the view of Tokyo Station’s red brick building was so beautiful and peaceful.It’s a great spot if you want to shop a little, grab something to eat, or just take a break with a nice view. I had a really good time there and would definitely recommend it.

If you are there during the day also pop into the free museum on level 3. You will not regret it.

Hie Shrine is a significant complex of Shinto shrines and gardens located in Akasaka, Tokyo. Established in 1478, it was once situated within the grounds of Edo Castle before being relocated to its current location in 1659. Surrounded by modern buildings, the shrine feels especially charming. Clear signs guide you from the subway exit. An escalator at the main entrance saves many people's knees. The omamori is a monkey, the first time I've seen one like this.

Unfortunately, we arrived just after the goshuin area was closed despite it saying it closes at 5 on google, but was shut after 4.
There was also quite a bit of construction near the shrine, but it is still open.
What a surprising place right in the middle of the urban area of Akasaka. It's an important and very beautiful Shinto shrine. What stands out the most is the staircase at one of the entrances (west side), with dozens of red torii gates, which looks like a smaller version of the famous Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. It's perfect for photos. Another curiosity is the monkey statues guarding the site, instead of the traditional lion-dogs, as they are considered the messengers of the local deity. There is even an escalator at another entrance to facilitate the ascent to the main courtyard. Admission is free.
The shrine is just a few minutes walk from the Akasaka station. It is located on a hill and you have option to take escalator towards main entrance. There is another entrance wherein you will pass by several tori gates, similar to the ones in Kyoto.
We saw the place from the hotel room we stay. So we decided to check it out one morning. Pretty creepy when learned about the origin of the shrine but i love creepy!!!!!! Cool stories and artifacts in the museum room though. Not a religious person but i love to know about cultures and places
During my time of visit there was a lot of people on the month of December which i understand,but definitely a peaceful place to come and pray before the end of year. One thing I dislike is when the non locals or people who are not from Japan crowding up the line just to a picture in the exit way I understand the background is nice with the tori gates but please be respectful and let the people pass instead making them wait
Quiet and peaceful. It was not crowded, only visited by local prayers and a little amount of tourist. The sunset from the shrine area was beautiful. Keep in mind that we can't take photographs of the shrine building itself.

The State Guest House Akasaka Palace, also known as Geihinkan, has a rich history dating back to 1909 when it was originally built as the Crown Princes Palace. This elegant Western-style building in the Neo-Baroque style is Japan's only one of its kind and holds significant cultural value as a designated National Treasure. Today, it serves as an official facility for welcoming dignitaries from around the world and plays a key role in Japanese diplomacy.
Akasaka Palace is a nice 2-hour visit, with adult tickets at 1500 Yen and children at 500 Yen, just a 5-minute walk from Yotsuya Station. Photography inside is not allowed, and if you bring a water bottle, you must drink from it to prove it’s not toxic before entering. The security is more thorough than at airports. While the interior of the palace is interesting, the backyard garden with its beautiful fountain and stunning Japanese landscape was the highlight. It’s not a must-visit in Tokyo, but a great place to enjoy the history, architecture, and serene surroundings.

The palace is still in use as State Guest House hosting reception events for world leaders visiting Japan. The architecture and interior design are very westernized but with a lot of Japanese subtleties engraved. We got audio guide to better understand what to look into for each room in the palace. The tour to visit Japanese Annex requires advanced reservation. The garden outside the building has a nice fountain. It's very worthy visiting and way less crowded than most tourist attractions in Tokyo
The monumental splendid guest house is well conserved and open to the public for a visit and you can enjoy afternoon tea here as well. I am impressed by the interior design and intricate stone cravings. The arrangement of the visiting route is smooth and the staff and volunteers are so helpful and willing to share the history and their experience. NO PHOTOS TAKING INSIDE. The picturesque and serene garden is well-maintained and a perfect retreat from the busy city life. I had an enjoyable afternoon here. Highly recommended ✨
I had an excellent experience here and I highly recommend taking the guided tour at the Japanese Garden as well as visiting the Main Building! The architecture and the arts were stellar - so many things to learn and delight. The guided tour requires advanced reservation though. I wish they offered more hours options instead of just 2 on weekend for English speakers.
Also, staff members were polite and courteous. Although security was strict, they made us feel at ease. I would definitely return to enjoy my time here.

It was awesome! Photos/videos not allowed inside, but it’s cool coz you get to focus on the intricate details, the vastness of each room, high ceilings, pristine white walls and gold trimmings. We had fun exploring each room.
Outside, you can film around the property and the grand fountain.
There were tables and chairs in the front lawn during our visit.
You can bring bottled water, and they’d make you take a sip/drink from it before allowing it in. No food allowed.
Some groups were in a guided tour, but we just came on our own.
Prepare to be transported back in time to the early 1900s when you step inside. Be warned, there is a lot of security and cameras here as it is a national treasure and is used for political meetings. As with the recent incidents of ill mannered foreign tourists I understand the precautions.
The guesthouse architecture is amazing to see, honestly I enjoyed being in there and the gardens more than the palace.

Unbelievably breathtaking. This palace was built based on both Versailles and Buckingham Palace as a model. The front indeed resembles the former the rear, with fountain, the later. You can’t take photos inside but it’s beautiful with marble from Italy, artwork from France. It’s now the guesthouse for foreign dignitaries and was used for the G7. Highly recommended
It was my first time here and I was left in awe after my visit! They don't allow smartphones and/or photos inside the building which makes sense. I hope they leave it that way as it adds to the mystery and charm of the place. The architecture and overall design was heavily European-inspired. It felt like a version of the 'Palace of Versailles' in Asia. Wished there were more information guides available in different languages. I went with my brother and he is pretty fluent in Japanese so we could ask questions but if you do not know any Japanese and is very curious, it might be a challenge.
I also got a free postcard after I answered a short survey as a foreigner. 🙂

Very cool Shinto Shrine in central Tokyo. Many smaller shrines here too. Many people visiting durning the day. There is a shrine office. Well kept and easy to find. Nice wooden Tori gate. Check it out if you’re in the area.
Small temple, surprisingly long line. I’d probably skip this one next time unless you’re into spiritual speed dating. Apparently, people come here to pray for love—and judging by the crowd, most are very single and very hopeful. Honestly, it feels less like a sacred site and more like Tokyo’s most polite singles mixer. If you’re looking for romance or just someone who also believes in divine matchmaking, this might be your place. Otherwise, bring patience… and maybe a dating app.
Quite a nice shrine. Just be aware that it is mainly for singles looking for God’s help to send them love and a partner in life. If you are coming with your family might not be exactly appropriate to stand on the same queue as the singles who are walking towards the altar and making their love wishes. We stepped away from the queue and took a few pictures. Beware of mosquitoes. We have all been bitten by them in the same moment. It can get pretty crowded especially in the evening and during weekends.

The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum is a stately Queen Anne-style museum located in the Marunouchi district of Tokyo. I was much more interested in the building, architecture and surrounding grounds than the art exhibit that was on display. They were a great deal of traditional wood block prints, which were interesting, but all were very similar, and I just didn’t have the appreciation for that work. As I walked around the building and the grounds, I was very inspired by what I saw, and tried to take many photos to help remember the experience. It’s certainly worth the time and effort if you have an appreciation for this architecture and this gorgeous historic red brick building.
The museum is located in a building that restored the first western architecture of Mitsubishi Groove. The atmosphere of the building is wonderful. 25 March exhibition is an exhibition of Pearsley, who died young in England. You can enjoy his sense of detailed line drawing and satire. The flow of the exhibition is not good, as many people are attracted by the exquisite paintings. I think there should be a limit on the number of visitors.

Newly reopened in 2025 after renovation Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum is worth your time. The museum specializes in Western art from the late 19th to early 20th century. Its permanent collection includes over 200 works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and woodprints by Japanese artists.
The beautiful building is hard to miss - unique red brick construction is housing the collection since 2010.
They usualy have quite interesting exhibitions displayed nicely on two huge floors. Count at least 2h to spend here.
And be sure to avoid weekends and public holidays - due to the layout (many small rooms) this place gets crowded easily and can be hell. Another thing - you may be a bit disapointed regarding the descriptions if you don’t speak japanese - only some were translated into english. On the other hand, make sure to ask for the discount (¥200) for the ticket if you are a foreign visitor.
The exhibit of Renoir and Cézanne is really well done. It emphasizes the very different interpretations of similar themes, the influence they had, and the bonds they shared.

We just showed up a couple of minutes before the tour started and we could join. A very knowledgeable tour guide. Best to go on foot from the station, lots of roads closed off by police.
This is a Japan National Congress building! It’s magnificent and stunning. Basically police officers do patrol around this facility. It’s calm and peaceful on weekends. When I walked by in front of the main gate, no body here other than police. I took pictures in front of the gate!!! It’s gorgeous building! You must come to see if you visit Japan!!! I like it!

The national diet building was built in 1936. There are many policemen around this building. I watched them carefully. They look so young, in their twenties. When a severe trouble occurs, maybe, they are victims on the trouble. I felt little blue when I passed by them.
It is just a quick visit and you get the chance of visiting the interior of the building. Tours only available in Japanese and English. The building is beautiful.
If you can actually get in, it is well worth a visit. A bit tricky as you have to fill in an application online. Our hotel helped us with our reservation. Be sure to take your passport with you. A lot of history went down here, but you should definitely read about it before the tour, as the guide was difficult to understand. The tour entrance is around the back of the building, and not very easy to find. There are two doors, and you do not want the “Upper“ house. Make sure you are at the lower house entrance. If you make it through all these hurdles, enjoy!

Nippon Budokan, a significant indoor arena in Tokyo, is not only a revered venue for martial arts events but also a popular location for live concerts. Built in 1964, it holds great historical and cultural significance as the spiritual center of Japanese Budo. The arena hosts various martial arts competitions and training sessions, along with serving as a venue for academic ceremonies and music performances by renowned artists such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Mariah Carey.
Iconic concert venue. It still stands as a great place to see bands because of its relatively intimate layout.
The sound isn’t the greatest, but it’s also not bad either. I imagine it’s a nice sounding venue for the performers, because they would get ambience without a horrible slap back delay.

We were there for an Eric Clapton concert, and the concert was great. The venue is quite dated though, and being somewhat typical westerners we don't fit the Japanese ideal for size. The seating is very small and not terribly comfortable. And there's only one path to the venue from the street so foot traffic really bottlenecks.
Now, that being said, it was a bucket list item for me to see a concert there because it has hosted so many noteworthy concerts over the years. I don't regret seeing this show, but I probably won't return unless it's an absolute can't miss.

This is a sports arena with comfortable seating and excellent views. Even from the highest seats, the playing field feels close, and all details are clearly visible.
Inside the building, a corridor surrounds the competition venue, with walls listing the winners of various martial arts competitions over the years.
We came at pretty late so it was close. But from the outside, AMAZING. It reminds of Taj Mahal because when I look on top of the building, it is kinda familiar. It’s like a huge stadium where events occur like sumos tournament, the Olympics, etc…

The National Museum of Modern Art, also known as MOMAT, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. It showcases Japanese art from the Meiji period onwards and features iconic works from the 20th century. The museum's collection includes pieces by renowned artists like Willem de Kooning, Wassily Kandinsky, Walker Evans, and Arthur Boyd. Originally established as Japan's first national art museum, MOMAT is now located in Kitanomaru Park near Takebashi station.
An eye-opening experience to witness history from the world of art, with a nice selection of gifts from the souvenir shop too. A nice place to reflect upon history and one self through art in tranquility.

If you are a modern art lover, you need to fully understand that Japan has a very long and robust history. This fact may complicate the meaning of "modern" art when viewed through this lens.
The exhibits were not really modern by Western standards. I did see one Georgia O'Keefe which qualifies but not much else.
The museum does prominently feature many Japanese artists, most of whom I'm sad to say Ive never heard of. Maybe this is my failing, I'm embarrassed to admit.
There was one impressive installation that moved me, so it is highly possible that you will find something that touches your spirit. Sadly, I was left wanting more.
I went at 5:30 on Friday and entered for 300 yen. There are works by modern Japanese artists, and there were works by Kandinsky and Paul Cezanne in the middle. It was great. If you go in the evening, the night view is also worth seeing.
As someone with a keen interest in modern art, my visit to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo was a significant disappointment. The museum's collection is far from the contemporary and universal 'modern art' one might expect from its name. It is more accurately a museum of Japanese modern history told through art, and a name like the "Museum of Modern Japanese History" would be far more fitting.
The curation felt aimless and confusing. Artworks with little apparent connection were placed together, making it difficult to follow any narrative and raising serious questions about the curator's intent. Furthermore, the dim lighting throughout the galleries hindered a proper appreciation of the pieces.
The experience was like ordering a Coke and being served a Sprite—a complete mismatch between the label and the product. For travelers and art lovers seeking the kind of diverse, international modern art found in other major cities, I would not recommend this museum. To top it off, the museum shop was very small and lacked any compelling merchandise, adding to the overall letdown.
Loved the collection and the works inside. There’s also a lot of information written in English, which enchants the visit more.
Tickets are 500 or 1500 yen depending on collection and exhibits.
Some great works able to cover in an hour, which included the time to read about the interesting pieces, a Matisse and a Cezanne were the most notable non Japanese pieces, the Japanese works were outstanding and there was a good mix of styles and influences, will pay extra for the additional collection on display next time, I’m sure there some important pieces there also.
I visited on Museum Day when admission was free.
The collection was impressive and well-organized. A peaceful and inspiring place — I really enjoyed it!

The Fire Museum, operated by the Tokyo Fire Department, offers a captivating journey through Japan's firefighting and disaster prevention history. Great place to spend a couple of hours with kiddos especially if they like fire fighters. The entire building houses a lot of exhibits and interactive stations. We learnt about the history and development of the fire department in Tokyo and got to admire the exhibits of various fire fighting tools and vehicles. There also a rooftop exhibit that lets you sit in a decommissioned fire helicopter. At the basement there's a merchandise shop that sell fire fighting relate stuff. Do support them as admission to the museum is free!

A FIRE FIGHTER MUST DO IN JAPAN. My husband works in the USA as a fire fighter - paramedic. We had a blast learning about the history of firefighting in Japan. They have replica, real and realistic renditions of everything fire fighting. We even ended up doing some of the children activities bc it was so fun! We purchased a ton of Tokyo Fire Department souvenirs for the guys back home. I included a picture of the shirts we got too!! Museum is multiple floors. I can’t remember which floor is “blocked off” but you can’t enter because it’s the actual floor for the local Fire Department. We did not buy advanced tickets. Just paid for admission when we got there. The entrance to the museum is actually by an exit to one of the train lines.
A must do for firefighters & firefighter wanna-bes like our 4yo. He was thrilled! He was beaming from ear to ear. It was also super interesting how the firefighting methods started in Japan and how it evolved over the years. It was so cool that they still have the old chariots & uniforms! The helicopter on the rooftop was a highlight! There were alot of interactive things to do too. So fun for the whole family!
I really enjoyed this museum and enough signs were in English that I felt it was time well spent, which was a little over an hour. On top of that, it was completely free!
I was most intrigued by learning that the early-on firefighters used to fight fires partly naked to show off all their tattoos. I especially enjoyed being able to pick up some of the modern tools to feel how heavy they are (no photo, sorry). There were a number of things for people to be able to sit in, such as two different helicopters, but it was a long wait even though the lines weren’t long.
Kid friendly museum, we enjoyed the displays. It has a direct entrance from the train. Free entry, dont forget to pass by the gift shop!

This museum is surprisingly well maintained.
It's multi stories and there are many different engines, and a helicopter, on display.
Everyone was friendly and helped explain the history of the department in the area, as well as providing wells of knowledge on each piece of history.
There are lots of kids so it gets noisy every now and then. But it's the good kind.
Also entrance is free!
This really is a great little museum, tucked away, we entered through an entrance via a Train station (I can't remember the name of it though), although there is a main entrance too.
Very interestingly starts off with the history of firefighters during the Eco period, and brings it up to date.
Lots of costumes/uniforms and exhibits.
One floor is really a kids space, but myself and my 30 year old sun enjoyed it.
Easily spent a few hours in here, it was almost empty when we visited.
Best thing of it all? It's completely free, not a Yen, so if you're in the area, go ahead and enjoy it
Great free attraction with plenty of history, props, vehicles and interactive sessions for kids. Shame a section was closed for renovations but hard to complain for free entry.

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, located on the inner east grounds of the Imperial Palaces in Tokyo, offer a vast historical landmark reminiscent of New York's Central Park. Despite being near bustling Tokyo Station, the gardens provide a peaceful oasis with large landscaped areas and remnants of Edo Castle's defense structures. In a city where green spaces are limited due to urbanization, these gardens serve as valuable outdoor space for urban residents.
There are extensive grounds, that are well maintained, that you can walk through. You could easily spend an hour or two just walking the entire grounds. That being said, there are not a lot of flowers in this garden. Our group was kind of looking forward to seeing some flower gardens, but there were no major ones. There are some benches. There are some rest areas near the bathrooms.

It is a historical garden in the Tokyo Imperial Palace. The gardens were first used by the Tokugawa shogunate. The garden was built on the grounds of Edo Castle. The building of the modern gardens began in 1961. The garden is over 210,000 square metres. The garden was completed in 1968. Gardens are well maintained and lovely blooms and manicured trees. Popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Picturesque place. Must see place. Uneven terrain, lots of walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Great place for photography

Both my hubby and I loved the trees, the lawn, the fruit trees to name a few. Never fail to amaze us. We spent a total of 3 hours there and forgot the sun existed. We were hot, sweaty and exhausted when we finished. But…we were very happy.
Very beautiful! It was closed certain areas but we walked around the palace and still can enjoy it. There was a lot of security which I noticed with the imperial palace throughout Japan to enter they do inspection on bags, very nice. There is also a very pretty stamp inside a souvenir shop :)
Only the garden around the palace is accessible to the public. It is a very large area, extremely nice to walk around. There are fish in the water surrounding the palace and fruit trees everywhere around the grounds. The whole area is immaculately maintained. On the day of my visit, it was not too crowded thus the long walk was very enjoyable. A bit of a distance from the subway, so prepare for a lot of walking!
Maybe we were here during the wrong season, because i was not very impressed with the park. It was nice, and peaceful, but also felt bare and empty. We were lucky because we got to hear, and sort of see (by peeking through the bushes) that there was a police training in one of the buildings of the park. What I like about this park is that it reminds me in certain aspects of Central Park in New York. I say this because the park is in the middle of the city.
Expect lots of walking especially since we just went to the free entrance after security. Very serene, but lots of tourists. The shops were cute and there are enough bathrooms everywhere. Overall, if you’re looking for a place to just look at nature amidst this concrete jungle - this is it.

Akasaka Sacas is an entertainment complex located near Akasaka Station, featuring a variety of shops, global restaurants, and a theater hosting concerts, musicals, and kabuki performances. Recently, parts of the complex were transformed into the world of Harry Potter to celebrate the Asia debut of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
If you like Harry Potter, then you definitely have to do by here! They transformed the station and nearby buildings to all be Harry Potter themed. Music is always playing, there's a decorated cafe with themed foods, a theatre and a souvenir shop as well!

There is also that owl with a letter, so please look for it.
You need to make a reservation at the cafe and the theater!
I recommend it because you can go to the Harry Potter world anytime!

Quite a small and quiet place for Tokyo. An added bonus is the location of the subway station a large number of restaurants from local cheap eateries to traditional good restaurants. Proximity to the TBS TV station allows you to attend events.

Despite appearing closed on the outside, it's very much open! After chatting to a friendly security guard and making our way to the ticket desk through a completely empty hallway, we purchased our tickets and made our way in.
This is obviously primarily a place for Japanese children / families, but non-Japanese adults can have lots of fun here too! There are 4 floors, each with a slightly different feel, I recommend working your way top to bottom.
There are hundreds of interactive exhibits scattered throughout, everything from an earthquake simulator to curling to cannons to walking pianos and optical illusions! You'll need to use Google Translate for most items, but the child-friendly Japanese means it all translates well. My personal highlights are, using the floor map, 4F (construction), 5F (optical illusions), and 5H (guitar hero-style piano).
Around lunchtime you might turn a corner near 4E and suddenly discover... hundreds of Japanese school children eating their lunch! This was quite a surprise, as we'd only seen a few running around playing with the exhibits.
There's a shop back on the ground floor, although mostly full of toys for kids (the museum's main audience!).
Stopped by the Science Museum (科学技術館) near the Imperial Palace on a sunny afternoon, just to browse a bit—but it turned into a full-blown exploration. From the outside it looks a little old-school, but inside it bursts with life, colors, and sounds. What’s great is that even if your kids don’t understand Japanese, it’s still totally worth it—so many of the exhibits are hands-on and experimental that language hardly matters. You can touch, build, spin, and test everything yourself!
Each floor feels like a new world: mechanics and energy on one level, chemistry and flight on another. Staff members are kind and often join in the fun, explaining things with gestures and smiles when words fall short. Some displays have that nostalgic, Showa-era charm, but it only adds to the magic—like stepping into Japan’s timeless love for science.
By the time I reached the robotics zone, I’d completely lost track of time.
A fantastic visit for families—interactive, educational, and welcoming even if you don’t speak Japanese. Set aside a few hours, because you’ll definitely want to try everything!
Fun place to come with Kids. Not expensive, you can buy tickets at the door. All exhibits are in Japanese so have google translate ready to go if you don't speak the language. Most things are easy to follow.
The science museum has 5 floors full of interactive rooms where you don’t just look - you can actually do experiments. I went to see the special exhibition on mosquitoes and learned so many things i didn’t know before.
Not many places to sit for the adults while the kids participate in some of the interactive activities. Besides that, it was a great experience for both my husband and kid and they said it was a value for money and it was not so crowded compared to other museums in Tokyo. Recommended if it is rainy and you have kids that need to be kept busy.
I wouldn’t personally recommend this location to tourists who don’t speak Japanese, especially with limited English translation or guidance. While there were definitely some efforts to provide assistance, it was a great kid-friendly science museum that kept children engaged and entertained. Although it may not have been as much for adults, we still enjoyed exploring and discovering what the location had to offer.

Such a beautifully designed building. I always loved taking the escalator and seeing the Kaleidoscope of mirrors as you enter the building. They also occassionally decorate the front area. Currently, they decorated it with the theme from the anime " Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu". It looks really cool. They also have the Chiikawa Bakery on the 3rd Floor. Loved the outdoor area of the Starbucks here on the 6th floor. A great place to visit when in Omotesando.

Nestled in the upscale area of Akasaka, Tokyo, Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is a historic Shinto site dating back to 1730. The shrine is home to a striking red-brown structure and an ancient ginkgo tree. It enshrines three gods: Susanowo-no-mikoto, Kiinadahime-no-mikoto, and Okiki-no-mikoto (Okuninushi-no-mikoto), with a focus on matchmaking.

Akasaka Hikawa Shrine has been in existence for over 1,000 years and is a place of strong faith for protection from misfortune and for finding love. The main shrine, built by Tokugawa Yoshimune, has survived numerous earthquakes and war damage and remains in its original form to this day. Within the lush grounds, there are torii gates, lion-dog statues, and lanterns engraved with the Edo era names, and the shrine is a rare sight in Tokyo that still retains many scenes from the Edo period.

Quiet in the middle of the city shrine. I came at the opening time which was very quiet on Sunday and I appreciated the fact that I was salone and I was able to see everything without having to deal with other people. Just a beautiful quiet shrine within the city, which was a perfect way to spend a Sunday.
This Shinto Shrine is located in one of the most posh areas, Akasaka, which is not very far from Roppongi of the Minato Ward. This Shrine has a lot of trees that it feels so close to nature and is being blesses by nature. The topping on the cake was when they played a chime music when it turned 5pm. This shrine also displays 3 huge chariots for the Gods. Absolutely mindblowing designs!! Please give this shrine a visit, if anyone feels like going to a shrine in Akasaka.
This is a Shinto Shrine where the primary spiritual guardian of Akasaka is enshrined. The guardian protects against misfortune, gives peace and prosperity. People also prayed for good match. During our visit, there's a couple being blessed for their marriage. What a nice surprise to witness the ceremony.

Stunning piece of architecture - best described as poetry in concrete and steel!
This is an excellent venue for volleyball matches, and it ranks among my favorites in Japan. The restroom facilities are well-maintained and can accommodate a large number of visitors. The seating arrangement, especially the super seats, is well-organized. However, on rainy days, despite its proximity to the station, reaching the venue can be quite challenging.
It is so big that 95% of people cannot see the performer at all. Might as well pay to watch the stream instead of sitting in the back of this place
Da-iCE was stunning and absolutely spectacular at this arena earlier this month! It’s a very large space and they were able to set up food and goods booths outside too 🥰 there are vending machines inside but the lines can get very long. very enjoyable and pleasant venue overall!

A little off the beaten track, but absolutely worth it. The sweeping concrete curves and moody light inside are stunning, even if you’re not religious, the architecture speaks for itself. Plus, the quiet neighbourhood and park it sits in is a lovely bonus.
This is one of the most beautiful cathedral that I have ever seen here. The architecture of the building is modern and unique. The church is accompanied by a bell tower with four bells that has sound embracing the culture of Japan, and a also the replica grotto of Lourdes. Inside the church is an office, large place to have a mass, Mary's statue on the left, Pieta statue on the right, and also relics of well known saints, such as St. Francis Xavier, St. Faustina Kowalska, and St. Pope John Paul II. The location of the place is relatively quiet. It is cozy to pray in this place. The most important thing is the pipe organ from Mascioni. It is huge and the sounds suits the architecture. I felt the tranquility when I was inside this place.
Easy walk from the Gokokuji station. This designated Jubilee 2025 Holy Door pilgrim church of the Archdiocese of Tokyo is a huge (specially by Tokyo standards) imposing complex of a bell 🔔 tower, the main church with basement, several offices of the diocese and parish with many parking spaces.
All is of modern architecture with clean lines and the interiors quite ascetic in its simplicity. We came at 4:30pm (30 minutes to closing time) on a Monday on the birthday of the Blessed Mother.
All was quiet and solemn, almost sepulchral because of the dark except for the lighted images and displays of a beautiful rendition of Michelangelo’s Pieta, a very modern baptistery with a font that is practically a work of art, first class relics of a bone of St Faustina, the blood of Pope John Paul and a fascinating relic of the Biblical Magi (a gift from the Cathedral of Cologne).
There is a lovely replica of Bernadette’s grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the grounds.
Would love to visit again when all the lights are on.

The Idemitsu Museum of Arts, situated on the 9th floor of the Teigeki Building in Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, is a treasure trove of East Asian art. The museum showcases an extensive collection of over 15,000 pieces gathered by Idemitsu Sazo over 70 years.
Ultra-modern Museum of Antiquities (primarily from the Edi Period, c. 19th century). Studies, research and development headline the aim of the artifacts presented within its showcased galleries. Free admission. On two separate floors. With very accomodable restroom facilities, very stunning and designed for the general public.
A gift shop is located at the entryway. And visitors are allowed to photograph.
Location found on the upper fourth floor -- inside the KITTE Building venue, across from the nearby plaza of Gran Central Tokyo Station. Easy accessibility via the Metro and JR subway line connexions within the skyscraper’s multilevel foyer and entryway.

Beautiful old scrolls and other paintings. Some ceramics. Three big rooms and then free tea and a view of the imperial palace. Lots of old folks excited to get in right when the museum opens.
Marvelous small museum, even if three out of five rooms were closed. Great Edo paintings show. A shame about no photo policy considering the gift shop sells a very limited amount of repro/postcards.
My wife and I are the first time traveling to Tokyo from Canada. We went to visit the museum for its Chinese ceremiscs collection which was highly advertised and promoted on its website and travel books. However, we didn't see a single piece from the collection this afternoon. The museum attendants explained to me that the Chinese collection is not exhibited throughout the year, but only during special exhibition. So you will be lucky to see any Chinese collection if you are a visitor. The nice thing is it has a nice sitting area with free teas and great view.
Hard to believe there could be a museum is on 9F of Imperial theatre building. Incredible private collection mainly Japanese and Asian. Hosts special exhibitions 5~6 times per year. Enjoy unobstructed view of imperial palace from museum's break room. Discount with Tokyo metro 24 hr pass.
Quiet little museum in the Marunouchi district of Chiyoda Ward, Tōkyō. This museum owns a large collection and many of the most famous works of Sengai Gibon, the monk known and beloved by Japanese (and gaijin that know of him) for his humorous Zen-ga (Zen art), and these works are placed on exhibition every 1-2 years. English explanation is almost non-existent with the exception of the titles of the works. The small lounge with comfortable chairs has breathtaking, panoramic views (museum is on the 9th floor) of the Imperial Palace and cityscape beyond, and green tea is complimentary to aid your enjoyment. Wonderful staff, too. Have been many times and will return again. “Admiration for Sengai” is only 2018-09-15 to 2018-10-28. Photography not allowed inside any part of the museum.
I quite like this building as an example of 60s Modernism with all the little details and fixtures intact. I think the galleries themselves could use a refurbishment -- maybe redone in less somnolent colors and with less linear displays to cut down on traffic jams especially when all the elderly come on weekends and holidays. There is an amazing view of the Imperial Palace and you can just relax there if you've paid admission and lucky enough to get a seat.
Exhibitions focus on Japanese painting, and generally interesting EXCEPT for absolute lack of English or other languages. I saw a number of foreigners at the survey of Buddhist art -- a demanding subject that absolutely requires explanation. A shame in comparison to the efforts museums like Suntory and Nezu make in this regard.

Exposed brick is one of the highlights, as well as the history of the train station. Lots of diorama and access to the souvenir shop. Admission is affordable. Worth a visit.

The museum is conveniently located at the Marunouchi North Exit ticket gate of JR Tokyo Station. It was very crowded even on a weekday because the Yuzo Saeki exhibition was on. The interior is beautifully maintained and has a very nice atmosphere with remnants of the old station building.

Probably one of the worst curated galleries I’ve been to. It seems like they got a collection of fabrics given to them that they struggled to find a coherent theme or journey. Worse still, no photography at all. How many galleries around the world have recognised photography = Instagram coverage = additional visitors. Clearly not Tōkyō Station Gallery. Definitely worth a miss!
Its a really nice gallery with several floors. At the time showing Foujita: Painting and Photography exhibition which was really very interesting. Having no clue what I was in for at the beginning and learning about this fantastic artist was a real treat. Well layed out exhibition that walked through the artist life.
Talk about a world class station. I was very impressed with how clean and modern bathrooms were to start with. Then when you walk around you have everything you need restaurants, bakeries, fresh food stores and a personal favourite lockers large enough to fit your luggage. Compliment the experience with super helpfull and friendly staff across the station who help you even if English isn't the greatest for some.
Never expecting an awesome exhibition (Fougita) to be held in a Tokyo Station Gallery. A very great job by the organizer!

This is a beautifully curated museum of items I think mostly from the University of Tokyo. The exhibits are very high quality. My natural history favourites were the pink coral and spider crap. on the 3rd floor, theres more exhibits on chemistry, maths and art. The geometric models are great fun to look at, while the Thai Buddhist painting is the stand out art piece.

Such a wonderful and inspiring museum to anyone, especially those passionate about academic pursuits at the turn of the 20th century. Seemingly heterogenous, it brings together several worlds: the animal kingdom with taxidermy specimens and skeletons; geological samples; plants; geographical artefacts... It feels as if is transported back in time to a great university a hundred years ago. I would happily return a few tines a year. Admission free and the staff are exceptionally polite. An amazing experience!

We tourists literally walked into this museum by mistake. I followed some girl coming out from that hallway, took a peek and one of the staff at the entrance gestured me to come in. I did, she told me the museum is free and we got lockers to put away our stuff, I'm so glad she pulled us in. We were looking for a good museum to go to, this was FREE and lots to see!

I was struck at how the Japanese people suffered before and after the war (as aggressors). Sad. I learned about the war from a Japanese perspective.
The announcement to the Japanese people from the imperial government surprised me. “It was certainly not our intention to eliminate the sovereignty of other countries…” Wow. To say that after years of occupying other Asian countries? Interesting denial of facts. (My grandparents were imprisoned and their property stolen, but hey - the imperial government denied it. Then, the government withdrew pension payments to Japanese widows too!) Wow.
Today’s Japan is really amazing considering the war devastation and loss. Time healed a lot of wounds. ❤️ Peace is always a better solution. People suffer consequences of big government.

A very interesting and important museum, which helps to understand Japan today. It doesn't take a stand on WWII events, it just describes the ordinary life during and after the war. A lot of photos and goods. There are no texts in english, but the audioguide (free app) is very good! Also google translate app is good to have to understand all the texts. I am so happy we found this museum and went there!
A truly shaking experience. The museum very plastically tells the whole story of the sufferings of Japanese families on the era of the militarism and later during the wars. There’s detailed, interactive info on the 2.5M of soldiers fallen on a hundred of WW2 fronts and on the ongoing efforts to exhume and honor their remains. The exhibition is generally very rational and critical against the war; but still, the atrocities committed by the Japanese troops are never mentioned here. This is the source of the controversy surrounding this museum. It’s fully in Japanese (no English except in a downloaded app, apparently not targeted at us foreigners) and, what is the worst, they forbid to take photos (apparently due to the copyrights of the presented photographs, which often belong to Americans). = -1 star
A great history museum about the war (some of the texts were not in English, it would be greatly appreciated to be able to read everything). It explains the daily lives during the war and the great recovery of Japan.
Great museum on the daily life of ordinary Japanese people before, during, and after World War II. Although you can download the audio guide app in English, most of the exhibits are in Japanese. Admission costs 300 yen and is free on Showa Day (April 29). We took about 2 hours to visit the permanent exhibition (7th and 6th floor), but unfortunately we did not have enough time to visit the other floors. If you want to see everything, I recommend visiting early in the morning. Beware you cannot enter the building from 13:30 to 14:00 due to disinfection.
Great museum for showcasing life in Japan in the years directly preceding and following the Second World War. Very immersive at times and with lots of interesting artifacts. I also had a chance to visit an excellent special exhibition as seen in the photo.

The entrance is free, but free for a reason. There is basically nothing to see here. Everything is a replica, and it takes less than 10 minutes to walk through if you read all of the placards.
The "torture devices" section was 2 minutes. Just isn't much content, and the stuff that was there wasn't very interesting.
Staff was very polite and helpful and is the only reason I'm giving this a 3 star instead of 2 star.
This museum is tucked away in the basement of Meiji University, and it’s definitely worth a visit. I stopped by the Criminal Investigation Section, where you can see torture instruments such as stone cuffs and execution devices like the guillotine and Iron Maiden.
The staff were super friendly and explained a lot about the exhibits, which really enriched my visit and gave me a good understanding of how arrest, interrogation, and execution worked in old Japan. I didn’t have time to check out the other sections, but I’d love to come back.
Best of all, the entrance is free.
It's truly amazing that university museums like these are free to enter - the atmosphere of this small museum with the black walls, high ceilings and lights fits well with the few exhibition pieces, which are quite interesting to look at.
I don't think that I've ever seen an exhibition displaying torture devices from different places and periods here in Tokyo - I was quite surprised to find them between the geology displays, vases and literature pieces.
The employees working here are really nice and helpful as well, they seem to know a lot about the exhibits and can explain a lot about them.

Awesome and short break or first stop museum at the bottom of the university. Mostly had pieces from early archeological sites that described what prehistoric life was like here. However, they also had a section on crime and punishment through the warring period and WOW was that interesting! They had a replica iron maiden and other wild torture devices. I really enjoyed seeing how law enforcement methods for arresting criminals.

It's a small, free museum tucked inside a university, and honestly worth a stop if you're nearby on a rainy day. The torture and justice section was unexpectedly fascinating (and a bit grim). I wouldn’t go out of my way just for this one, but if you’re in the area and curious, it’s a solid way to spend an hour.
This is a beautiful small museum, the items on display are both interesting and the information given is excellent. It is a calm place to visit and it was worth going to. It is free admission .

This park was very quiet when I was here. Just several kids running around and parents. I’ve visited many times but this street first time. Many old but look luxury mansions around this park. You may enjoy a bit chill out here, or just have light chatting with friends or lovers. Good place if it’s not so crowded.

With a decent cleanup and some creative landscaping; this greenspace could be an oasis in the concrete jungle of Tokyo 🌻🌲🌴 ... The Sumō Museum is a small but fascinating museum located on the first floor of Ryogoku Kokugikan in Ryogoku, Tokyo. It offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of sumo, showcasing various artifacts and memorabilia related to the sport. Visitors can admire colored woodblock prints, silk belts, embroidered aprons worn by top-ranked wrestlers, and memorabilia from former sumo champions. The museum also features special exhibits held six times a year.
Attended 14th Sept'23 Tokyo Grand Sumo tournament from 10:00am to 18:00. Arrived 11:30. Watched divisional bouts. The junior bouts start at 14:30hrs, and then the seniors from 16hrs. As you can see from the photos. Japanese attend from the junior division, only died hard sumo fans attend before lunch. Oh yes lunch early. Don't wait until the lunch interval - again my mistake - because the majority of the bento boxes or good food options are already sold out!! And again don't make my mistake of opening the chicken food. Read the instructions! Often there's an external string that needs to be pulled to initiate the cooking of the food. I didn't read, opened the box then had to put it back together to cook the food. Summary worth seeing once. Next time watch on TV.

Great museum, a bit small as there is only one exhibition hall but contains a vast amount of information on Sumo, the arena and the sport's history. There are some interactive exhibits too and a lot of memorabilia, really recommend it if you're nearby and if you're a sumo fan!
It was an alright experience. I’d recommend buying tickets in advance. There was no wait time when arriving but waiting for other guests up to 20~. The staff were somewhat unfriendly and there wasn’t any real welcome. The show was okay, very interactive but also there was a LOT of talking compared to the sumo wrestling. I understand that sumo wrestling is very quick; there was a lot of info to share, the sumos were retired or just beginning but it was kind of disappointing. I’m not sure if the ticket price is right for that fact. You receive a photo and gift bag at the end of the event. Again, as you are moved out staff are lacking in charisma regarding customer service and seem like they are very much rushing you.
Not so much a museum more than a medium sized room with artifacts, actual sumo gear, photos, and the history of sumo - current and late.
The gift shop is not attached to the room but is on the other side of the building; small, but full of cool trinkets to buy.
For the stamp collectors, there are two: one at the exhibit room and the second is at the entrance to the gift shop!
Going to the sumo was a great experience. Crowd totally into it. Great merchandise. We met a famous sumo Ozeki soon to retire! Seating is cramped and is confusing so take time to ensure you have the right seat. Snacks and drinks available.
It's not really a museum, more of a display of photos of sumo wrestlers who have won championships and some trophies. We walked round slowly, looked at everything, and we're done in 20 minutes. We'd love to have seen more information on the history of sumo.

It’s a small museum around 73rd Yokozuna Terunofuji . There are scrolls displayed on the origins of Sumo . There is an interactive screen explaining the basics of sumo . The museum is within the Tokyo sumo “Kokugikan” it’s worth a short visit. You cannot have access to see the main arena . It’s worth a visit though . The Zōshigaya Old Missionary Museum, also known as the Old McCaleb House, is a 1907 Western-style wooden building that served as the residence and religious center for American missionary John Moody McCaleb. 静かなちょっと上り坂の住宅街を歩いていくと、急に洋風建築が見えてきました。当時の生活様式を感じられる貴重な文化財ということでしたが、建物の中は無料で見学できます。

Beautiful church. We came to listen to English mass on a Sunday. It was a peaceful atmosphere, with a thought-provoking sermon, and the congregation was lovely and diverse (it was our first time hearing African praise and worship and we absolutely loved it. We even searched for the songs when we came back home. Much love to our brothers and sisters). We will come back on our future visits.
Great experience here. The architecture was very unique compared to must churches since it's designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. It is a subtle, understated beautiful design with an amazing ceiling.
We were also impressed with the number of participants ts and sheer size of the mass. We attended on a hot July Sunday and there were easily 800 people in attendance.
Kudos to my wife for suggesting we actually attend mass during vacation!
St. Ignatius Catholic Church (Kojimachi) is such a peaceful and beautiful place. It’s spacious and surrounded by greenery, and also one of the Porta Sancta churches. What really stands out is the architecture — the ceiling is shaped like a flower and partly transparent, letting in soft natural light while keeping the place cool and calm. Truly a serene spot to pray and reflect.
This was the first time I had visited this church. They have Vietnamese mass on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. A large number of young people attended the liturgy, and the church was beautiful. Specifically, the roof is shaped like a flower.
This is one of the church that being chosen by the Archdiocese of Tokyo as 2025 Jubilee pilgrimage sites. I love the architecture of this oval-shaped church. It serves masses for several languages, such as Japanese, English, Vietnamese, and also Indonesian (biweekly). The air conditioner worked even if there was no mass.
Attended mass here with my wife and 3 children. It’s a huge church, very spacious and gets packed on a Sunday 12pm English Mass. We had attended this Mass after experiencing Mass at the Franciscan Centre in Roppongi the week earlier which seemed more like a Disney musical performance.
You can imagine how relieved we were to experience the normal order of Mass here at St Ignatius. The priest was calm, prayerful and had a good sermon.
The only negatives was that there seems to be random lay volunteer women at all these Japanese churches who take their jobs too seriously. The moment our child approximated a cry, they come up to us insisting it’d be better if we took them to the cry room. All in all, a beautiful church

Hie-jinja Shrine Nihonbashi Sessha is a historic shrine located near Kayabacho Station in Tokyo. Established in 1590, it features a striking staircase adorned with red torii gates and expansive grounds with ornate red and green buildings. The shrine is popular for traditional weddings and has a serene atmosphere, shaded by trees. Despite being damaged during the Pacific War, it was renovated in 2010 to its current form.
Not to small, but not very big. Nice Shrine to visit, quiet spot in the middle of the city. Has a chiowa, which is a circle you figure 8 around before going to the shrine. Very pretty little spot. The hydrangeas are amazing. Really, throughout Japan, they have been beautiful. We have been collecting stamps, so we got 1 last stamp and writing before we left back home.

A contemporary art gallery housed in a former public bathhouse. While it often features international artists, right now it’s showcasing works by Kohei Nawa, one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists. Since it’s a gallery, if you find something you love, you can actually buy it.
Oh ho, the anti-bathhouse bathhouse! Perplexing, yes. There's one big bright room that houses all sorts of funky sculptures, like this golden banana, by contemporary (usually Japanese) creators. I also enjoyed the air conditioning. It's not too far from Ueno, Geidai, etc. and it's free! 5 stars for air conditioning. I love air conditioning.
Very small and easy to miss, but definitely a hidden gem. A single room gallery displaying a handful of works. Check their site before visiting for opening hours as I don’t think collections are always on display. A short walk from Oeno Park if you’re already in the area for the market or one of the other major museums. Entry is free of charge
Free gallery in Yanaka that is housed in a restored/ reformed bath house. It’s a small space and the exhibits tend toward the contemporary. Check online perhaps to see if you’d like what’s on show, but, since it’s free why not stop in regardless if you’re in the area?
It's more about the novelty of a former sento that's now an art exhibit rather than the art itself, really. There appears to be a 2nd floor with more art, but it was sealed off at the time of my arrival
Yes it is an awesome idea to turn an old bathhouse into a gallery. But it is too small. Best combine with a walk in this nice neighborhood.

TOTO GALLERY · MA, located in the Toto Building, is a sleek venue dedicated to showcasing the work of modern architects and designers. Despite its association with a well-known high-tech toilet company, the gallery focuses on art and design related to buildings and physical structures. Since its opening in 1985, it has been devoted to hosting solo exhibitions by Japanese and foreign architects and designers.
I was pleasantly surprised by this gallery operated by TOTO. Unlike most private museums or galleries in Japan, most exhibits here have bilingual descriptions in English and Japanese. It is a small space across two floors but you can easily spend an hour here if you are interested in architecture. Urban Fungus was on display when I visited. It explores methods of sustainable living in modern society. Finally, a visit to TOTO won't be complete without using their bathroom.

Toto Gallery was a nice visit during our art gallery sprawl. The exhibit here is mostly architecture focused, on how they develop buildings, railways and other infrastructure within Tokyo. It's very interesting to look at. Staff welcomes us at the entrance, there are English brochures and English text on the information boards besides each display. That was very convenient for us. The gallery is two floors, and wasn't busy when we visited on a weekday evening. It's a good stop if you're looking for art or have an interest in the visual development of the infrastructure of Tokyo.
If you're an artist or an architect you'll love it. They have displayed 3d models of Architects O+H. You get an insight into their philosophy of work and the process behind it. Very inspiring indeed!

Either there was a renovation taking place or the Toto toilet displays were gone. Currently it's an architectural concept exhibition on 2 floors plus the book store. Still worth a quick stop if in the area (free entry) - but probably not worth the trip if you're travelling from elsewhere. Strange exhibit on the upper floors - cross between an altar and an outdoor entertaining space.
I like the TOTO products , but I liked this place even more...! What a cool gallery , great architecture book shop ❤️🖼📚 Free entrance, mini library in the book shop. There also are Mori museum , National art center in walking distance!
Keep in mind that the pictures do not necessarily represent the current exhibit. I left rather disappointed because the pictures were rather interesting, but the exhibit was nothing like them.

Manseibashi Station Remains, located between Kanda and Ochinomizu stations on the JR Chuo East line, has been transformed into a vibrant hub filled with restaurants and shops. Despite its closure in 1943, the station's original red brick structure by the Kanda River still exudes the nostalgic charm of the Showa era. Just a short walk from Kanda Station, this spot is perfect for art displays and locally made arts and crafts.

This is a very beautiful and interesting place, especially in the evening.
We could enjoy many shops and restaurants.
Just come by if you happen to be around. There is not much to see in this old train facility turned small shopping arcade.
I highly recommend visiting this place if you're interested in art displays and locally made arts and crafts. It's a pleasant walk through, offering a unique experience during both day and night visits, each with its own distinct vibe. If you're seeking a peaceful spot to simply stroll and enjoy yourself in Akihabara, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Akasaka Biz Tower is a stylish three-level mall located within the Akasaka Biz Tower skyscraper in Tokyo's Minato City. Lovely atmosphere, very welcoming. Offers great services, shops and delicious food options for a wide variety of options aswell as a very handy train link to get to where you need or to transfer to and from. The grounds of the TBS studios are kept immaculate and overall is feels very safe to explore what the area has to offer! Would highly recommend a visit especially if you are a Harry Potter fan as the area has a well themed and immersive Harry Potter section playing music from the films.
You know a neighbourhood’s arrived when even its name gets its own light show. This sign glows like a neon peacock after three espressos: bold, unapologetic & just begging for a selfie. Each letter is lit in a different color, as if Tokyo wanted to remind you it’s both a business hub & a party.
By day, it’s just a clever sculpture. By night, it’s the city’s way of saying, “Yeah, we know we look good.”
Tip: Visit after dark, grab a photo, and pretend you’re in a high-budget K-pop video. Bonus points if you can get through all six letters without someone photobombing.
The theater is excellent for the Harry Potter show
This is a beautifull cute square, it has a Harry Potter theme. There are many restaurant and a few shops. It also has a Harry Potter cafe/restaurant and shop. Don't forget to make a reservation, because its mostly fully booked! When you are arround, visit it! Its a must seen. It also has beautifull Harry Potter music on the square
The ambiance was really amazing if you like Harry Potter. A little crowded after the show but you will definitely satisfy any Potterhead.
There is also a Harry Potter themed shop and restaurant.
Great place for harry potter fans, the subway entrance is themed and the walkway scene looks gorgeous

The Nakagin Capsule Tower is a remarkable architectural gem located at the intersection of Chuo and Minato districts in Tokyo. Constructed in the 1970s, this innovative building features independent, furnished pods that are ingeniously plugged into a central core. It stands as an iconic representation of Metabolism architecture, showcasing futuristic design concepts that were groundbreaking for its time. While it has unfortunately suffered from neglect over the years, many hope for its preservation and restoration to honor its unique legacy.
This building was groundbreaking in 1970’s and become iconic as a representation of what might have been possible for how buildings could be built in the future. Unfortunately, it has not been very well maintained, and hopefully it will be preserved and restored some time in the future. I would certainly support it’s preservation. Please go visit it and support its restoration.

Interesting building in Tokyo. It become an icon and a must see building for architecture aficionados.
It is close to Ginza, so if you're on an architecture hunting, check other building in the area as well - like flagship stores.
One of the coolest examples of the metabolism architecture out there. Great tour guide Hal was excellent, fascinating place, design, history. Worth a trip even if you aren't an architecture nerd.
Was in the area and popped by, only to find that the plot is now vacant. Would have loved to see this iconic building.

Learned about this place in my art history class at some point, completely forgot about it and now that I'm in Tokyo I suddenly remembered haha, can't wait to visit it during the day and get some better photos.
