Casa Rufo, located in Bilbao, is not just a restaurant but a culinary institution that offers a unique atmosphere combining a rustic deli with a dining area. The establishment is celebrated for its specialty in hearty Basque cuisine, particularly its renowned txuletons - large, aged beef steaks that are deeply rooted in Basque culinary tradition.
We read about this place on Culture Trip, usually a bit of a go-to when stuck for choice particularly with eating out in a new place. We’d had our pintxos fill and fancied something special for our final night. This place really didn’t disappoint.
The space itself is wonderfully charming and kooky, with tables placed in different rooms surrounded by walls adorned with deli products, olive oils, all kinds of alcohol, trinkets and basque memorabilia. We immediately felt comfortable despite it being a quiet Tuesday evening. And away from the busy tourist hotspots of the Old Town we got the feeling we were dining amongst locals as the place filled up, the Maître d explaining he found our booking easily as we were the only non Spanish name on the system.
We opted for a few of the 1/2 portions to share and of course that famous ribeye. The smoked duck was seriously incredible, as were the Bay of Biscay anchovies in a pool of amazing olive oil with simple roasted pepper and a few olives. We didn’t have time to consider bread before it was offered and brought out - 2 individual crusty rolls, warmed through. The bonito tuna salad was fantastic too, in a delicious vinaigrette and frankly enormous for a 1/2 portion! No complaints there.
Then came to steak, sizzling on a cast iron skillet and cooked perfectly with that amazing aged taste you get with matured on the bone cuts. It was washed down with a few glasses of txakoli for myself and for my partner what we assumed to be a house red. We glanced the wine list but what was quickly poured into my partners glass was big, bold, oaky and just perfect.
We honestly felt like we were at the mercy of staff that just knew how to get the job done. No stuffiness, no pretence, just amazing produce and hardworking staff.
As I mentioned it was quiet and we were admittedly thankful for a large party popping in after us to liven up the atmosphere a bit but that shouldn’t put anyone off booking. I can imagine it’s absolutely electric during a busy lunch rush or at the weekend.
Final bill was astoundingly reasonable for the amount we ate and how we were treated. Really a perfect and special end to our time in Bilbao.

Casa Rufo was a major disappointment.
After an excellent experience at La Gavilla the day before, we were up for another day of gastronomy - but Casa Rufo turned out to be our worst meal in the Bilbao.
Some lowlights:
Despite being promised a table inside when reserving, we were seated directly at the door, exposed to a cold draft.
My cod dish was extremely salty and the sirloin steak was on par with what I’d expect at a generic German autobahn restaurant. The fries were bland and far from homemade.
Service was lackluster, bordering on rude, and the prices were unjustifiably high.
Most strikingly, there wasn’t a single local visitor in sight, a telling sign.
Based on my experience, I would recommend choosing another place. La Gavilla, for instance.
Lovely little authentic basque restaurant.
Skip the starters and go straight to the steak & wine. The tuna salad was a let down for the price. We suspected the tuna from a can despite asking if it was fresh :(.
Some music in the restaurant would have made for a better atmosphere and slightly better service but couldn’t fault the steak.
Stunning place and food to match. Everything we tried was delicious. The service was excellent.

Outstanding food and service! Took the family here. Great setting understated, but cosy. Had the smoked duck, foie and croquetas for starters - real homely food. The oxtail stew was superb and it’s not often you get a solomillo steak as good as this outside of Ireland! Fantastic selection of Riojas and traditional Basque desserts

After six days walking the Camino del Norte, we had a great diner @casarufo Bilbao last friday 31-05-2024 with people we’ve met during this Camino.
She heard from a college about this restaurant and it was thruley a wonderful experience!
The entourage is great, like you’re having dinner in a shop or wine cellar. When you enter the restaurant you think you’re at the butchers place, but in the back it looks like a real restaurant with several tables. And of course the food was great. Not high cuisine but just like food needs to be,: pure, simple and tasteful. We’ve had a great meal and wine; we took the option to share for 65 euro’s each, including a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine and two bottles of water and coffee. Not cheap for Spanish food, but worth it! We ate at 15.30, so it was a late lunch, but so much food that it was our dinner at the same time…
I’ll highly recommend it, if only to see the ambiance: you’re going back into the last century.

Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao is an upscale restaurant located at the heart of Bilbao's renowned Guggenheim Museum. Led by talented chef Josean Alija, this ultra-modern establishment offers innovative haute cuisine and a pronounced effort to guide diners through a culinary journey. The restaurant's seasonal menu prioritizes fresh ingredients, with a focus on vegetables and seafood, complemented by carefully curated wine pairings.
The restaurant is at the Guggenheim. The dining room seats about 8 tables with a motif reminiscent of the Guggenheim itself. The staff are very friendly and attentive, keeping the pace of service up at all tables. We had the 8 course tasting menu with matching wine. The menu is centered in Basque cuisine, and a variety of fish. All the dishes were delicious. The hors d'oeuvres featured two croquettes that we tempura fried, and unlike many croquettes one finds, you could actually tell the protein you were eating. A highlight was the tuna in a sauce that was both acidic with a touch of sweetness and was divine with the tuna steak. Another highlight was the last savoury dish - pork belly with mushroom and pickled carrots. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious. Wine pairings matched very well with the dishes and highlighted a number of very nice Spanish and Basque white wines, that we look forward to exploring more. The washrooms were spotless, and even had complimentary toothbrushes and toothpaste - a first in my experience. The chef made a couple of appearances to observe how service was going. As a final touch when leaving the kitchen staff gave a shout out as guests left. Excellent dining experience.

I recently dined at Nerua Guggenheim, and while the experience was pleasant, it didn't quite live up to the "creative" label it's been given on the Michelin website. Every dish I tried was good, but nothing really stood out as innovative or unique. Felt like a bit overrated in my opinion.
The tomatoes were a fresh and promising start, one of the highlights of the meal. The anchovy was just okay—honestly, it felt like something I could have easily found at one of the local pintxo bars. The spinach dish was rather ordinary; the almond and anchovy flavors were lost in a too-liquid texture beneath the spinach leaf.
The cod was tasty but, again, lacked creativity. The bonito was well-prepared and, along with the tomatoes, one of the better dishes. The seabass? I’ve had similar at home, so nothing special there. The pork belly was decent, but not remarkable. Unfortunately, the dessert—a sweet pear—was a disappointing finish. I was hoping for a refreshing burst of mint and lime, but it just didn’t deliver.
Overall, the meal was okay, but given the Michelin star and the "creative" label, I expected more. It was a decent experience, but not one I'd go out of my way to repeat.
Dining at Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao was still a special opportunity — having a 10-course menu for €110 inside the beautiful Guggenheim Museum was memorable.
The food was not bad, but overall it felt a bit simple. Most dishes tasted quite ordinary. I felt the food could have been more elaborate and refined. However, I particularly enjoyed the spinach dish and the dish with squid ink, which stood out among the courses.
The desserts were also underwhelming, and I wish they had been more creative and carefully developed.
Unfortunately, the service was poor.
The staff often couldn’t answer basic questions, either due to limited English or lack of menu knowledge.
Usually at fine dining restaurants, the problem is that the pacing between dishes can be too slow — but here, it was the opposite.
The courses came out so quickly that I felt rushed and almost uncomfortably full before I had even finished the previous dishes.
My plate was even taken while my friend was still eating, which made the experience even more awkward.
When I asked about the tea options, they simply brought green tea without offering any choice.
At the end of the meal, I shared my feedback, but the staff gave no response. I’m not sure whether they didn’t understand or simply didn’t want to confront any criticism.
I didn’t expect perfection from a one-Michelin-star restaurant, but overall, it was not a pleasant experience.
Nerua is undeniably elegant—minimalist design, beautiful atmosphere, right next to the Guggenheim, and the food is light and refined. Perfect, that is, until reality bites—literally.
During a birthday dinner, I bit into a fish and found a hard, white plastic pellet about 3 mm in diameter. We informed the server immediately. She took it to the kitchen and… that was it. No explanation, no apology, no acknowledgment—just a silent nod as if nothing happened.
Only after I asked post-payment did we hear the baffling explanation: apparently, fish sometimes eat plastic in the ocean, and it stays in their flesh. How comforting.
I get it—ocean pollution is tragic. But in any other Michelin-starred restaurant, discovering plastic in your dish would merit at least a sincere apology, or some form of acknowledgment. Not this awkward, hands-off shrug until the guest chases answers.
In short: the food and space are still nice, but the dismissive service and lack of care made a special occasion feel like a bad joke.
Worst 1 michelin star restaurant i have ever been to, honestly was so upset about the quality of food being served up, it was worse than the food served in the bistro in the same museum.
Every dish was excruciatingly sour, bitter or salty. The scallop omelette was so salty I winced. The bonito was so sour that every bite resulted in pinpricks in my tongue. Another dish with this strange parsley sauce was so bitter I had to sip lots of water. Not sure if they were playing a practical joke on me. I couldn’t bring myself to even finish a few dishes. The dessert was so stodgy and bland. I was incredibly disappointed given that it was the last dinner of my trip to San Sebastian and I had booked this months in advance.
No matter how many times we tried to wave a waiter over to pay for the bill, we were flat out ignored, even though we were rushing out to catch the fireworks show.
I had a much more delicious and better value one michelin star experience at another restaurant in Bilbao called Mina and only wished I made a second booking there, instead of being ridiculously angry at the food. None of the waiters or waitresses even bothered to check in about the taste of the food even when I clearly didn’t touch more than half of my fish.
My conclusion is that this restaurant does not deserve a michelin star, or it needs a new chef to set things straight! Because how can you have a tasting menu that is so lacklustre and at times odious from start to end - that is simply baffling!
Wonderful experience, you can choose a la carte or the tasting menu. We took the menu with the wine pairing. Highly recommended. The restaurant is not cozy - very white and minimalistic but it works.
Interior perhaps too minimalistic for my taste, but more then compensated by service and quality of food and wine.
Really didn’t understand the contrasted ratings for Nerua. We loved the experience and the food was amazing. The chef and the team were attentive. Love being at the chef table looking at how they plated and the process how they created the dishes. Superb cleanliness and organisation. Didn’t feel rushed and didn’t feel too overly posh. It was a fabulous meal from that may not look decorated enough for standard perspectives of a Michelin-star restaurant but they were packed with flavours and interesting combinations. I love that Tomato salad and the marinated seaweed sea bass. I think some people just need to calm down, keep an open mind and let yourself to be immersed into what Nerua can offer, beautifully crafted food. Don’t expect and you will get the unexpected.

Restaurante Cevitxef is a modern Peruvian restaurant that offers an intimate and flashy dining experience. The menu is dedicated to fish, with ceviche being the main highlight. Customers have praised the excellent service despite limited staff, and the delicious dishes they enjoyed, such as chilli and prawn causa, Parmesan scallops, passionfruit jumbo prawns, tiradito de pulpo, langoustine ceviche, and tallarines de langoustine.
Both the food and service at Cevitxef were exceptional. Special mention to Jota, who was very attentive. He described a couple of the dishes to us and also made excellent cocktails. I would definitely recommend Cevitxef.

Eating Ceviche has been a big dream of mine since I read all the books from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Now that I fulfilled my dream, I can say I'm so much happy I stopped by! The salmon and tamarind Ceviche is incredible (bottom bowl in the pic), as well as the Tiraditos (we tried octopus and seabass). An overall incredible experience!
Went looking for a nice place to eat and stumbled upon cevitxef it was fantastic. We had 2 sea bass , I mountain and sea dish, 1 coconut curry dish ,copious glasses of wine and it all came at a very reasonable price. We did not have a reservation but we were facilitated. I would highly recommend it. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend it and if I was back in Bilbao I would definitely go there again
It changed my perspective of Peruvian food. It was espectacular, everything had layers of flavors, depths and umami.
I’ve never experienced anything like this in Peruvian cuisine.
They were also dog friendly.

Completely new style of food to us but everything was excellent. We shared 3 dishes between two. Had the chilli and prawn causa, it seemed strange to have a cold dish with mashed potato but it worked so well and was seasoned perfectly. The Parmesan scallops were excellent, and the passionfruit jumbo prawns had a lovely sauce and were cooked to perfection. Really good service considering there was only 1 waiter, he covered the tables, phone and bar and service didn't feel slow at all. Drinks were also great, highly recommend the pisco sour. Definitely not one to miss, and thank you to the chefs and waiter for a meal we won't forget!
One of the best meal I’ve had lately. Ceviche is great, as well as the vegetarian option, the fried seabass is amazing and the rice with vegetables and fish is delicious. Not to talk about desserts: we’ve had all them and they were amazing (especially the 3 milks cake).
Service is kind and fast.
Toilets are always clean.
I would definitely recommend this place.

Best pizza ever! The quality of the ingredients is unbelievable, and the combination of flavors was absolutely perfect. It’s no wonder they’re 14th in Europe’s 50 Top Pizza — you can truly taste the passion and hard work in every bite. If you’re looking for an amazing pizza experience, this is the place. They do two styles: Romana and Napoletana. The Romana style was a delightful surprise — I didn’t expect it, but I loved it! The Napoletana is incredible as well.
If you also try to visit as many top 50 pizza restaurants when you travel in Europe I will make sure to visit Demaio in Bilbao. Maybe it should be much higher on the list even though they are on place 17 in 2024.
My opinion is that it is the best pizza I have tasted this year.

I have a habit of asking pizza restaurants that I fall in love and get to know where the owners absolute favorite pizza comes from. I ... You get the point I LOVE pizza. Demaio was astounding. I will travel back to Bilbao just to go here for pizza...
And to end. I have a collection of tests... The Tetlow test is would you eat two meals in a row at a restaurant. I did the next best thing as I was leaving the next day. I cancelled dinner plans and took a takeaway pizza...
They serve traditional pizzas and pie type pizzas. The pie pizza was off the charts.

It is one of the Top50 pizza places in Europe. After trying many of them, we believe Demaio serves the best pizza in Europe outside of Italy. Truly amazing pizza!
Great pizza spot that we walked into around 3:00pm and somehow snagged an open table. We enjoyed both the Roman style pizza (fresh tomato and mozzarella) and the classic Napeolatana. Also a cheap spritz, only 3.90€
We walked in spontaneously after 11 PM — and wow, what a surprise! Hands down the best pizza we’ve had in a long time. Perfectly crispy crust, amazing flavors, just absolutely next level.
And the tiramisu? Brutally good. So rich, creamy, and full of flavor — we were blown away. Total hidden gem. Can’t wait to come back!

To be honest it’s an amazing place! I wasn’t a fan of Lebanese cuisine before, but I loved it so much. Such a cozy place, with minimal design, good lighting and tasty food!
Delicious meal, incredible atmosphere, beautiful experience! From the dinnerware to the dessert, every aspect of this restaurant has been carefully considered and executed perfectly. Must try the hummus and baba ghanoush. I cannot recommend enough!
We went for dinner as 2 people, we ordered a starter, one pita kebab and shawarma. The food overall tasted good especially the falafel was really delicious and crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, but the portions of food are small for the price you pay (14€ for one pita or shawarma)
Also the place is small so it was very loud inside and the customer service is below average.

Walking into the unassuming Middle Eastern joint, the scent of exotic spices and roasting meat hit me like a freight train. It was as if I had been transported to the bustling streets of Beirut or Cairo.
The menu was simple, yet packed with flavor: shawarma, hummus, and falafel. But don't let the simplicity fool you, my friends. These were no ordinary staples. These were works of culinary art, crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail.
I started with the hummus, a creamy blend of chickpeas, tahini, and garlic. It was velvety smooth, with just the right amount of tang and a hint of smokiness from the paprika sprinkled on top.
Next up was the falafel, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Each bite was bursting with earthy cumin and coriander, balanced perfectly with the freshness of parsley and cilantro.
But the star of the show was undoubtedly the shawarma. Tender strips of marinated meat, slowly roasted on a spit until they were juicy and charred to perfection. Served with fluffy pita bread, tangy pickles, and a creamy garlic sauce, it was a flavor explosion in my mouth.
As I savored every bite, I couldn't help but marvel at the depth of flavors and textures in each dish. It was a testament to the rich culinary traditions of the Middle East, and a reminder of the power of simple, honest cooking.
If you're ever in the mood for a taste of the Middle East, look no further than this humble little restaurant. You won't regret it.
Another good example of how the gastronomic offer in Bilbao is starting to break the traditional comfort area of tipical local food while maintaining the culinary quality that the locals are used to.
Palestinian inspired small menu with homemade pita bread and different meat fillings as main dishes.
But, leave the main dishes aside when you get your order. The best way of enjoying the experience of Jazmino's is to get as many starters to share as you can (depending on how many you are) and even leaving the staff guide your choices if you prefer!
One last warning. Leave room for desserts! The cardamom tiramisu is a must.
Nice little restaurant, plainly decorated, but food came out quickly and it was delicious. Ordered the Lebanese schwarma with the spicy mango sauce on the side and it did not disappoint. Good feta, tomato, and strips of meat. I'd definitely come here again, shame it's at the end of my visit to Europe!

Restaurante Sokarrat is a cozy and intimate eatery with a local vibe, offering delicious paella that's highly recommended by visitors. Despite its location not being in the fanciest area of Bilbao, it's definitely worth a visit for the tasty food and excellent service.

Can’t express how happy this place made me feel. It’s quaint, corky, great music, staff is prompt and friendly, but the best part is the paella. We went with the socarrat option and left us asking for more. Come and enjoy it by yourself!

Ardibeltz taberna is a highly recommended place with good vibes and a great selection of beers, including non-alcoholic options. The atmosphere at night is particularly enjoyable. They offer excellent Rioja wine and delicious food such as gambas and squid. What a local gem! Recommended by a local Japanese lady and whilst its small and abit away from the central old town area this place has authentic Japanese food. The owner is lovely and you can tell there’s a lot of care gone into the food. My son demolished the cold tanuki udon and asked for a second bowl. The kakuni was super soft and melts in your mouth. Gyudon had a lot of flavour and I liked the mix of kimchi on top. The desserts are great too, my favourite was the matcha tiramisu.
I made a reservation on Whatsapp, but when we got there we were rudely turned away. Maybe it was a mistake on the reservations person in charge, but it would have been better if the staff said it nicely or tried to find a solution.
