Pastry shop
Nestled in the heart of Bilbao, Pastelería Don Manuel is a charming pastry shop that beckons all dessert lovers to indulge in its sweet offerings. As you enter this enchanting space, the delightful scent of freshly baked goods envelops you, promising an unforgettable culinary experience. The shop boasts a remarkable selection of traditional Spanish pastries, including the renowned Carolina cake and delectable butter buns from Martina de Zuricalday.
The best pastry in town! I loved the mini versions of the desserts! They are cute but also you don’t have to buy big full size desserts to try it 😊 The prices are super affordable as well.
Kateryna C — Google review
Great place to find sweets in Bilbao. Went here to try my first Carolina and it was perfect. I’d love to come back for more pastries. You can sit down and have a coffee as well.
Sydney S — Google review
Lovely bakery with cakes to die for. Service is your typical "don't want tourists here" spanish welcoming. I'd still recomend a visit 100%
Mota — Google review
Pastelería Don Manuel, in central Bilbao near Arriquibar Plaza, has it all - incredible pastries (regular size and minis) chocolates, canapés and more. The best part is that there is even place to sit and enjoy the sweet delights right there. Of course, I had to try the Carolina, which Pastelería Don Manuel is known for and wow, it was a winner in my book. Basically, when you’re in Bilbao, visit as many pastry shops as you can to find your favorite Carolina, pastel de arroz or bollo de mantequilla… can’t wait to return to Bilbao to try even more!
Nanita — Google review
Fabulous and well known pastelería in Bilbao close to Alhondiga. The cakes, coffee and fresh orange juice are superb. Service is excellent too. Price, justifiably, is top end. Well worth a visit
Chris H — Google review
Pastry heaven. If you crave for something sweet that's the place to go They have huge cakes but also small bite size Carolinas for example. We found it not overly sweet like at other places in Bilbao.
Nicola D — Google review
These pasteries are amazing! We had the pistache croissant and muffin and it was so good. They use much 'filling' so if you think it is too much you can leave it on the side, but at least you can never say it was to less. Also had some other stuff, everything is nice!
Ramona C — Google review
One of my favourites en Bilbao. You also can have some coffee. Chocolate mousse is my choice 🤣

I ordered the hot chocolate and got the absolute best hot chocolate I have tried in so long!! Also for the price I paid, definitely recommend and would go there again! :)

Tiny, nice place, very good craft beer selection (on tap & canned). Some pintxos available.
Zita Z — Google review
Great little cafe bar with 5 taps pouring quality craft beer with great service. The food was great, especially the gildas served with a mini Bloody Mary! The music was class too.

So glad I discovered this gem. Food and drinks are simply excellent quality! (Sandwich & carrot cake 👌) And the interior is very hip with a lot of attention to detail. Owner is a very nice chap, too. Thank you.
Malte H — Google review
Came for the coffee and was not disappointed. The owner really knows his stuff. We tried the specialty filter coffee and it was amazing. He even served it in ceramic cups he made himself—we were lucky to be the first to use them! Loved the whole vibe. Definitely coming back.
A.Dossary — Google review
Such a great bar. It's small and cosy. The staff are really helpful and friendly. There's a great selection of local beers, all delicious. Even if you're only in Bilbao for a few hours, make the effort, it's worth it. The sandwiches looked class too.
Michelle W — Google review
I visted here in early December 23 and have to say I wasn't dissapointed. OK, it's only a small place, so it can quickly fill up. So my advice is to get here early. What it lacks in size it makes up for in warmth, friendliness & intimacy. The beer choices whilst limited (by lack of space) are quite impressive and it's fairly obvious that the owner has a good knowledge of craft ales. The choices range from IPA's, Porters, Stouts, to Pilners & Belguim types. On the evenings of our visits there were 6 beers on tap, 3 IPA's, 1 x Porter, 1 x Belguim Dubbel & 1 x Pilsner, not to mention and impressive selection of craft ales in tins (inc some from the UK) The bar's small size can make it a bit squashed at times (especially when it gets busy) but there are a few small tables around the back with a sprinkling of extra chairs & stools. In the worst case scenario there are even a couple of small tables & chairs outside on the street, however the street footpath is narrow & also very steep (Oh & it needs to be dry!) There are two small toilets to the left & rear of the bar (both very clean) On our visits we had the opportunity to sample a few of the bar snacks, both the hummus & the carrot cake were delicious. I can also recommend the hot chocolate & coffee which were equally of top quality. Overall this bar was a great find and despite it's small size I would highly recommend it. The owner is a lovely guy (who speaks better English than my Spanish) and also very helpful. If you're not sure about anything, just ask. To add just a footnote, the bar is located just a short walk from the Ibarreko Zubia footbridge, but be aware if you're not good on your feet it is quite a steep little climb.

Charamel Gozotegia in Casco Viejo is a charming pastry shop with vintage decor and a wide range of coffee options, including the popular affogato. This unique espresso variation features a scoop of ice cream submerged in the coffee for a delightful combination of flavors. The bakery also offers an extensive selection of sweets, from traditional cakes to imported treats like cinnamon rolls and pasteis de Belem.
Loved the place!! The pastries are home made, and freshly baked. They keep coming out of the kitchen. Everything we tried tasted very good. (my favorite: the chicken curry toast). Also the coffee and the juices are great. Also, the value-for-money is fair. Highly recommended.

Unreal cheesecake. Tried the Gorgonzola one and was unique, the classic one looks great and want to try in the future. Recommend if you’re looking for coffee, cheesecake or local pasties and cake. Friendly service, decent prices.
Ben Z — Google review
Best bakery ever. I was genuinely surprised by the quality of pastries; the cinnamon roll is on par with those I had in Copenhagen — a huge compliment. The cheesecake is also worth the hype. Nothing like NY style — this one is light and like pudding! One of the best I’ve had in during my 9 months in Spain.
Lydia — Google review
We went there because the cheesecake was supposed to be unique and amazing. Unfortunately it was not. It tasted more like an egg’y custard than cheesecake. But coffee was very good!
Kinga — Google review
Came for breakfast on a Friday morning. There was a very wide selection. Everything was delicious and well-prepared. You can get free water, which is provided in a jug on the side with glasses. Definitely recommended! 👍
Lizzy S — Google review
Brilliant café! Came for breakfast and was very impressed by the selection of pastries and cakes. Staff were absolutely lovely and the atmosphere was really nice. Highly recommend 👍
Jasper R — Google review
We chanced upon this place an hour before the closing time and did a takeaway of the soft cheesecake (plain) and the pistachio cheesecake. The pistachio taste was subtle, and I have not come across pistachio cheesecake before, so I had to try this. Both were excellent, with a biscuit crumble underneath. They also had a 3rd option of hard cheesecake, which we didn't order. Highly recommended!

This spot offers an extensive menu featuring options for breakfast, brunch, lunch, tastings, and craft beer. In the evenings, it transforms into a cocktail bar. Unlike typical European cafes, CINNAMON offers a wide range of dishes resembling traditional American brunch fare.
It was a great suprise! We are a fantastic home made waffle with poached eggs and avocado and an iced coffee that was delicious. You can choose from different types of brunch and coffees. I highly recommend it even though it's on the expensive side.
Irati C — Google review
This breakfast place was right across our hotel, so we went there several times. We really enjoyed cappuccino decaf on the oat milk. The Turkish eggs and waffles with poached eggs were extraordinary, while a toast with avocado and tomato - nothing special at all. The restaurant doesn’t accept credit cards, only cash.
Natalya P — Google review
Went twice, excellent both times. Not sure what insane mind decided pears with soft cheese and honey and seeds on toast should exist, but they're frankly a genius.

Pastelería Martina de Zuricalday is a renowned artisan bakery in Bilbao, dating back to 1830 and considered the oldest of its kind in the Basque Country. Located just four blocks away from the Guggenheim Museum on Plaza San Jose, it has become a must-visit destination for those with a sweet tooth. Visitors rave about their delightful Carolinas and other delectable pastries, praising their lightness and exquisite flavors.
The oldest artisanal bake shop of Euskadi. Established in Bilbao in 1830, Martina de Zuricalday is an inspiration of how a business can thrive through time. The location on Plaza San Jose is only 4 blocks from the Guggenheim Museum. Worth the walk 😋

Recommended to try the famous “Carolina” from Bilbao! We also tried the fruit cake and it was really nice - not too sweet, just right. You cannot sit, this is just a shop for pick up.

Café La Granja is a charming café located in Bilbao, offering a cozy and nostalgic ambiance reminiscent of a grandmother's living room. The interior exudes style and class with mismatched furniture and an array of postcards adorning the walls. This quaint spot is popular for its velvety cortado and delectable home-baked cakes, providing visitors with a whimsical experience.
We loved the grandeur of this old style restaurant & pintxos bar. It felt like we had stepped back in time. We had several mid week 'menu del dia' meals & they were all delicious with great service & great value.
Snails S — Google review
Very nice cafe with a beautiful interior that radiates style and class. They serve fantastic tapas e.g. French bread with manchego cheese, salmon or Brie cheese. Prices are reasonable considering the location of this cafe. The little terrace on the Biribila square catches sun light until approximately 4 pm.

(Translated by Google) I knew that place in 1985, when I had just joined RENFE. We went to have a coffee and a pastry before entering the workshop. I have fond memories of that place. It closed on the same day as my birthday. I doubt it will reopen, because the entire building has been bought by an investment fund. It is a shame that these types of cafes are disappearing, where one of the characteristics was the calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Basquery, located near the Albia Gardens, is a unique and trendy spot in Bilbao. It's a multifaceted space that combines elements of a restaurant, bakery, and brewery. The establishment is the brainchild of Aitor Elizegi, former president of Athletic Bilbao and a hospitality entrepreneur. Here you can enjoy delicious pizzas, hamburgers, and craft beers brewed on-site.
Fabulous on site brewed beers. Their bitter and SOK especially good. Great selection of pintxos and very reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly, try speaking a bit of Spanish or Basque. Didn't try the restaurant but it looked pretty good, as did the bakery.

We went FOUR times during our three-day stay in Bilbao because 1) we love great craft beer 2) we love great food. This place is a DREAM. Absolutely delicious food and an amazing variety of craft beers. You can see how much attention to detail and effort people in the kitchen put on every dush. The bread is made onsite too, along with pastries and cakes. And they seem to be always open. Such brilliant, warm and friendly service. The dream!!! Highly HIGHLY recommended.

Wonderful place to have breakfast, lunch or anything else. They really know how to make food and how to give the best service! The pastries are awesome, the coffee is good, the hamburger was really good. We came back again and again which is not a typical thing for us at all!

A really promising spot with a brilliant atmosphere and an impressive selection of beers. We were excited to try a few, but unfortunately, it was a bit of a mixed experience. A couple of the draught beers we tried didn't taste as fresh as they should have, which was a letdown. This place has huge potential to be a top beer destination in Bilbao, so I'm hoping we just caught them on an off day.

Situated in a business area close to Plaza de Don Federico Moyua, Pastelería Suiza offers an educational experience centered around one of Bilbao's most beloved pastries, the Carolina. Each Carolina is unique, with the merengue being a crucial element and the tartlette base differing from those found in other pastry shops. This establishment has successfully deepened my fascination for this distinctive local treat. It is truly remarkable!

Located in a commercial district near Plaza de Don Federico Moyúa, Pasteleria Suiza furthered my education on one of the most popular pastries in Bilbao - the Carolina. Basically no two Carolinas are alike. The merengue is clearly a key component however what a delightful surprise to discover the tartlette base was also different than my first Carolina from another pastry shop. All I can say, Pasteleria Suiza made me even more hooked than before on this typical local pastry.

no words can describe this excellent vegan cafe! i’ve been struggling for some good true vegan food & went here based on other reviews. A great selection of savory & sweet treats will have your taste buds dancing. Sad i found this on our last day its a must visit when visiting Bilbao 😍

After visiting loads of vegan cafés i can admit that this place is a truly Gem. The quality of the cakes/cupcakes and tortilla de patatas is outstanding and the café is so cute and cozy. Everything they bake is handmade in the store, organic and truly special. I have ordered some custom cakes for birthdays and a baby shower, and they’re truly spectacular! Creative, really well priced and soooo tasty!!!! Their price is really good compared to other places around, considering all is organic and handmade its totally worth it 💕♥️

NATA Lisboa Bilbao is a charming spot in the heart of Bilbao, offering a taste of Portugal with their delectable pasteis de nata. These creamy custard tarts are encased in crispy pastry and dusted with cinnamon, making for a delightful breakfast when paired with a hot cup of coffee. In addition to these traditional treats, the café also serves light bites such as soups, salads, quiches, and sandwiches.
Delicious natas and a lovely spot to enjoy a morning coffee next to the church! Highly recommend

Nice cafe . Great Natas crunchy soft sweet and warm. Good coffee. The ham and cheese for the breakfast could have been a little bit more tasty but the bread was nice and crunchy.

This delightful spot offers an array of gluten-free and sugar-free treats that are not only delicious but also made with quality ingredients. Visitors rave about their unique offerings, like the carrot cake donut without a hole, which has become a fan favorite among those with dietary restrictions.
GF donuts as good as any we've had, far better than most. As a bonus, the proprietress spoke English well enough to tell us about her wares. Will make the trip again while we're here.

If you are celiac and you like to take care of yourself, this is your place! You can also buy the nut creams with which it is made. She makes gluten-free breads. Plus, the girl is super friendly! The cheesecake, the red Velvet donut and the almond cookie were what I liked the most. I don't give it 5 stars because I would like it to be a little more affordable although I understand that everything is made with high quality products and it shows! I will leave its pink panthers and other things for a possible future visit. Gluten-free, sugar-free, there are vegan ones... but what matters is that they are very good. Pumpkin-based dough, the chocolate one is richer than the normal one, because it was a little dry for me. Tremendous chocolate coverage, and very rich fillings, especially the one with a touch of marzipan, and the one with turmeric and cinnamon. I put four in one go without feeling heavy at all, the size is rather small, but they are powerful. I'm not going to evaluate the price, everyone will know that, but it is clear that the product has a lot of quality and is made with care. The girl who runs the business is very nice, and she gives you details of everything you ask. Pasteleria Arrese 1852 is a bakery that specializes in sweet pastries such as bollos de mantequilla (butter bread) and almond croissants. The staff are friendly and the selection of chocolates is excellent.
At the end of 2022, I had the opportunity to visit Bilbao, as part of a Business Trip with colleagues from Indonesia. We got information from colleagues in Spain that this shop is one of the most favorite cake shops and has been around for a long time. The staff are very friendly and quite helpful, and generously tolerant of our English. There, it is the right place to stop for a while and also buy souvenirs to take home (they will wrap the items attractively as gifts). Everything is amazing here from chocolate to cakes. I tried the chocolate and ended up bringing home a few boxes as souvenirs for relatives & family in Indonesia. Family and friends who tasted the cakes from here were quite happy and felt that the cakes and chocolates that I brought from Spain were very delicious and tasty.. Warm greetings from Indonesia, TH

This was my go-to cafe when I visited Bilbao for a couple of days. I went in with intent to get a cup of coffee and some pastries but I saw the melted cheese on toast, I was immediately hooked. The first visit was during breakfast service so it was a little busy but I got my order promptly. I noticed many women having catch up sessions there, and that is always an indicator of how good the pastries must be!

Maikala is a wonderful spot to indulge in delectable desserts and satisfy your post-meal cravings for sweetness. They offer a wide range of large cakes, such as red velvet, chocolate cake, traditional cheesecake, and Basque cake. Additionally, they have intriguing small cakes like txakoli and red wine cakes. I personally enjoyed their special Maikala cake which costs approximately 4-5 currency units – it was incredibly delicious and satisfying!
Fantastic experience, great service and very authentic! Hot chocolate and Carolina sweet with merengue is to die for, check it out. We came back and gathered new treats after going for tapas. Who doesn’t love a good dessert? I know that it’s hard for me to pass up on a slice of chocolate cake, a bowl of ice cream, or a brownie? The sad thing is that dieting often forces us to choose between dessert and health. Those trying to get rid of excess body fat usually have to say “No” to those delicious desserts, no matter how hard it may be. But what if there was a way to have your cake and eat it too – quite literally? What if there were desserts that you could eat guilt-free – losing weight while still enjoying the wonderful taste of all of your favorite things? If that’s what you’re interested in, you’ll love Amazing amazing amazing desserts I’ve seen many many in my entire life But they caught my heart The shape, the taste, the texture Wow !!!! 5 stars !!!! Perfect place to indulge in some piece of cake and satisfy those post meal cravings for sweets. There is a variety of big cakes like red velvet, chocolate cake, traditional cheesecake or Basque cake, as well as some interesting small cakes like txakoli or red wine cakes. I've tried their special Maikala cake which cost somewhere between 4-5€. It was amazing and so filling! It's relevant to note that here they serve you generously and the pieces are quite big. Also, I loved that there is a big variety of teas to combine with the sweets. The only thing I didn't enjoy as much was the amount of people inside, because the place is quite small inside and apparently gets full quite easily. We were lucky to have one table available, otherwise we would have to ask for a takeaway.
