Bodies of Water
Hue, a city with a rich history and royal heritage, offers visitors an array of attractions to explore. One of the highlights is the Perfume River, which flows through the heart of the city. Spanning approximately 80 kilometers, this river derives its name from the fragrant flowers that fall into it from upstream orchards.
Peaceful place and the boat ride is so calm and memorable. You can even steer the boat for an experience to remember. The place is so serene and wonderful

If you're taking a Grab, it seems like the drop-off point is set too far. So you can just stop near the new bridge, which will open on March 26, 2025. On the map, Grab directs you all the way to the end, which is a very quiet area with only two or three tofu stalls, where vendors aggressively offer you tofu. A bowl of tofu is only 10k VND, and it's actually quite good—just like a typical local experience. So you should give it a try!
Felicia H — Google review
Took a ~25 minutes boat ride for VND150K per pax. Nothing amazing, views were mehhh. Could be skipped.
ZH L — Google review
The Perfume River runs gracefully through Hue, adding charm to the city with its calm flow and romantic scenery. A boat ride at sunset is unforgettable, with the golden light reflecting on the water. I enjoyed every moment and will highly recommend my friends to experience this magical river.
Hien N — Google review
Great River and site to visit in Hue. We took a night boat to listen to the palace music show. It was great and price is not expensive. Highly recommend!
Food 8 — Google review
It’s really nice for a journey along the water. The people selling boat rides WILL rip you off. A 200k ride for an hour quickly became 200k per person. Then our 1 hour ride was over in 15 minutes. Look it’s not expensive, I just didn’t appreciate being ripped off.
Stephen P — Google review
A peaceful place to admire the amazing skyline of Hue. It is ideal for a stroll along the riverbank and the park nearby. It was pity that we couldn't enjoy Hue folk song performances due to bad weather.
Tuyettrinh T — Google review
An amazing river at Hue This is the best nice river flow through the a city in Viet Nam. Its name "Sông Hương" meaning Perfume river. Once upon a time, the Nguyen empire choose this city because the river and the sight so harmony with nature. If you come to Hue. Take a dragon boat cruise along the river. Visit Thien Mu pagoda and tomb of the king. The boats and the river gives you an insight into the fisher families and Hue culture. Have a nice trip.

Cultural landmark
The Hue Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a vibrant complex within the historical citadel of Hue. Once the capital of Vietnam, it boasts over 100 remarkable architectural structures such as The Noon Gate and Thai Hoa Palace. Visitors can explore the area by bicycle or cyclo to take in its intriguing history and captivating scenery.
Certainly one should not miss a visit to this impressive and historic site when visiting Hue. That said, as with so many such important cultural assets forming the seats of government, the lavish adornments seem superfluous in many ways. I’m glad to have visited but it wasn’t my favorite place in Hue. I reserve that feeling for the quiet beauty of Tu Duc’s Mausoleum.
Reginald W — Google review
This site is very large and impressive, with beautiful gates, walls, and palaces that really give a sense of the history of the Nguyễn dynasty. Walking around feels like stepping back in time, and there is a lot to explore. Although there are many visitors, the area is so big that it never felt overcrowded. I enjoyed having the space to walk freely and take photos without too much disturbance. Overall, it was a wonderful visit – definitely one of the highlights of Hue and well worth including in a combo ticket for the historical sites.
Mr R — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A must-visit historical site in Huế! The Imperial City is grand and full of history — ancient architecture, beautiful gardens, and peaceful courtyards. You can easily spend hours exploring. Best to visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Truly impressive! 🌿🏯✨
Uyển H — Google review
What a beautiful place, full of history and nice buildings. One of them stands out on pictures. Tickets cost 200k for entrance fee. You will easily spend 2h minimum there. We decided to rent an electric bike for 90 min, so we could go around more easily without being too tired. It was worth it. I think it would have been better to go with a tour to understand the whole history and background behind the imperial city. So much to learn. Anyways, worth it!
Céline N — Google review
We visited the Hue Imperial Palace as part of a shore excursion from our cruise ship, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the day. The palace complex offers a fascinating look into Vietnam’s royal history, with impressive architecture, decorative gates, and peaceful courtyards that are great for exploring and taking photos. Many areas have been thoughtfully restored and look beautiful, giving a good sense of how grand the palace once was. Some sections, however, are still under renovation or show visible wear, which slightly affects the overall experience. More detailed signage or explanations inside certain buildings would also help visitors understand the historical context better. The grounds are quite large, so comfortable shoes and water are essential, especially on hot days. The layout is easy to navigate, and there are shaded spots to rest along the way. Overall, the Hue Imperial Palace is a meaningful and memorable place to visit, especially if you are coming from a cruise tour and have limited time. It is rich in history, visually interesting, and absolutely worth seeing. With a bit more restoration and improved informational displays, it could easily be a five-star attraction.
Travis K — Google review
Wonderful place reflecting the Hue Dynasty of Kings. This was covered in our day tour of Hue city. Fascinated by the facts tour guide, Ryan of venus travels, shared with us. Portions are being rebuilt. On the way to Hue, we passed a wonderful bridge and an incense village. there is a lot of history to cover here, it was very very hot, so be prepared with sunglasses, hats, umbrellas, water..visited Hue imperial city – the palace of 13 Nguyen Kings with Ngo Mon Gate, Library, Thai Hoa Palace, Nine Dynastic Urns, etc.
Manish _ — Google review
Last visited 3 years ago and some buildings were under restoration, now able to enter and definitely worth seeing, Hue's main attraction and rightly so, recommend getting a multi site ticket for the Emperor tombs as well which can be used for 2 days
J G — Google review
It reminds me of my childhood when I first visited this place with my family. It was very peaceful and beautiful. A lot of walking which was also fun but we also rented a golf cart with someone driving us around. It’s amazing that we get to look into the past, how the royals of the Nguyen Dynasty lived.

Nguyen Dinh Chieu Walking Street in Hue is a charming pedestrian street that offers a delightful experience for visitors. As the sun sets, the street comes alive with local vendors selling snacks and drinks, while providing stunning views of the Perfume River. This hidden gem is popular among locals who showcase their street arts and music. The short street allows for a leisurely stroll to take in the refreshing breeze from the river and explore wooden kiosks offering souvenirs and delectable street food.
Loved walking along the boardwalk in the evening. It was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Hue. Beautiful views of the river and bridges, while watching how the locals enjoy the weekend. We also passed by a row of museums along the way and enjoyed the outdoor exhibits

Super fun to walk down, lots of restaurants and boba tea places to stop off at. Went during Tet 2025, absolutely manic and so busy. Saw the apartment cafe which is close to here as well as the Saigon Opera House.
Waheeda R — Google review
Nice area to take boat ride see city views; park like setting along the river. Best time to go 20:00 most vendors are open and more people watching.

Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Walking Street in Huế is a hidden gem that offers a delightful mix of local charm, culture, and relaxation right in the heart of the city. I spent an evening here during my recent trip to Huế and was absolutely enchanted by its peaceful ambiance and riverside beauty. Stretching along the Perfume River, this walking street is smaller and more intimate than some of the more commercial pedestrian streets in Vietnam, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s clean, well-maintained, and has a uniquely calm and romantic atmosphere — especially around sunset, when the sky turns golden and reflects off the water. What I appreciated most was the blend of local life and gentle tourism. You’ll find local families taking walks, street performers playing traditional Vietnamese instruments, and small stalls selling art, souvenirs, and light snacks. There are also several charming cafés and teahouses where you can sit and enjoy the view while sipping a cold drink or Vietnamese coffee. The street is beautifully lit in the evening, with colorful lanterns and tasteful lighting that enhances the cozy and poetic feel. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll, unwind after a day of sightseeing, or just people-watch and feel the rhythm of Huế. If you’re visiting Huế, don’t miss this spot. Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Walking Street is the kind of place that doesn’t try too hard — it simply lets Huế’s gentle soul speak for itself. Five stars without a doubt.
Judy J — Google review
There is a nice breeze and it is particularly beautiful at sunset! The bridge is lit up at night and adds to the beauty! There are palm trees and the path is smooth!

Hue’s walking street comes alive at night with colorful lights, street performers, and local vendors. It’s a great place to enjoy music, shopping, and local snacks. The lively atmosphere makes it unforgettable. I had so much fun here and will definitely encourage my friends to visit.
Hien N — Google review
Nguyen Dinh Chieu Walking Street is a charming riverside promenade that blends local culture, scenic views, and relaxed energy. Located along the southern bank of the Perfume River, it stretches from Phu Xuan Bridge to Truong Tien Bridge and opens daily from late afternoon into the evening. As the sun sets, the area comes alive with street vendors selling snacks, drinks, and handcrafted souvenirs. The LED-lit bridges and river breeze create a peaceful backdrop for strolling, people-watching, or catching impromptu street performances. The street is compact but full of character—ideal for a short walk or a casual night out. It’s pedestrian-only, making it safe and quiet compared to busier city zones. Locals gather for music, games, and evening hangouts, while visitors enjoy the mix of food stalls, art displays, and photo spots. It’s not a major shopping hub, but it’s a great place to soak in Hue’s laid-back nightlife and riverside charm.

Thien Mu Pagoda, a renowned 7-story Buddhist temple constructed in 1601, is a prominent landmark in Hue city. Nestled along the Perfume River and surrounded by landscaped grounds, this ancient pagoda holds great spiritual significance and boasts an impressive architectural design. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich historical narratives and explore the various structures within the pagoda.
Beautiful pagoda right by the perfume river. Visited one late afternoon in August and it was very busy with tourists on tours. But the grounds are very peaceful if you keep walking back. Some monks were even playing badminton with public.
Alex M — Google review
A beautiful and unique place, the pagoda sits on a hill, peaceful and serene, right next to the picturesque Perfume River. There are tasty local foods and great seating spots by the river. Nearby you can enjoy kayaking, swimming in the river, and listening to the famous Hue folk songs. Inside the pagoda, many relics and valuable information about the Nguyen Dynasty (Vietnam’s last feudal dynasty) are preserved. The pagoda also houses a great bell recognized as a national treasure.
Hoangminh N — Google review
A small complex comprised of the pagoda and a temple above stone steps. The pagoda faces the perfume river, which used to be perfumed by flowers flowing down from the vicinity. The pagoda is not open for entry, but you can still admire the piece of preserved history. The temple in the back is open for visitors, but please show respect and follow the rules in terms of clothing and decorum.
Czarina V — Google review
We visited Thiên Mụ Pagoda as part of our shore excursion from the cruise ship, and it ended up being one of the nicest stops on the tour. The pagoda sits on a hill overlooking the Perfume River, and the views alone make the visit worthwhile. The grounds are peaceful, clean, and beautifully maintained, with plenty of space to walk around and take photos. The architecture is elegant and iconic, especially the seven-story tower at the entrance. Inside the complex, the gardens, pathways, and temple buildings create a calm and serene atmosphere that feels less crowded than other major attractions. Our guide shared the history and significance of the pagoda, which added depth to the experience. Even without a guide, the cultural and spiritual presence of the site comes through clearly. Overall, Thiên Mụ Pagoda is a beautiful and relaxing place to visit in Huế. It is easy to explore, offers great river views, and is an excellent stop on any cruise tour or day trip.
Travis K — Google review
Lovely pagoda overlooking the river. Very nice and tranquil and free to walk in/around. The grounds are much larger than it looks and in the back is a courtyard full of large bonsais. In the very back is a miniature pagoda with its own courtyard
Mimi L — Google review
A quaint tourist spot. It is serene, sleepy and yet charming. This spot is especially enticing when there are not a lot of tourists around and you are left on your own. The history of this spot is already covered on other sites, so I am not going over it.
Dat L — Google review
the pagoda was built during Nguyen Dynasty in the early 17th century, regarded as the most well-known pagoda in Hue. The traditional architecture style looks simple but solemn and peaceful. A bit noisy with many tourists in the morning, will be more quiet in the late afternoon or sunset time.
Han N — Google review
I really recommend visiting this place. The pagoda is located a little bit outside of the city center, but it truly is beautiful. Especially the garden, which offer so much quietness and relaxation. Entry is free.

Dong Ba Market, situated along the north bank of the Perfume River on Tran Hung Dao Street in Hue, is a significant cultural and culinary hub. It offers a glimpse into the daily life of locals and showcases traditional Vietnamese market features like sampan landings and bustling bazaars. Visitors can indulge in iconic Hue dishes such as beef noodle soup and mussel rice while exploring souvenir items, bronze goods, and local delicacies like sesame sweetmeats.
Remember to bargain. Lots of things sold here. All categories of goods under the same roof. After shopping around, one can sit down to try the local Vietnamese food and refreshments
GAN Y — Google review
This is an amazing market, seems everything is here, quite big! Upstairs are clothing, bags and silks. We don’t have a very good experience up there, they were very pushy! A lady meet us on the stairs asking us to have a look at her clothing, told her we’re not looking anything in particular just having a look around. But she won’t have it, they will put anything you might be interested in your face! She was getting rude when I wasn’t buying. Price start really high! Another woman won’t let you passed by until they shoved anything they’re selling on your face! They repeat what you saying in a rude way! Downstairs all food, plenty of dry fruits, nuts, anything you can think of and in all different sections. Quite pleasant to look around here because they won’t bother you that much unless you ask! Helpful to have google for translation, most of sellers won’t understand English. Great experience.
LALAAG A — Google review
A buzzing, vibrant market located just a short walk from Trường Tiền Bridge and right by the Perfume River. If you’re looking to experience the real hustle and bustle of Huế, this is the spot to hit especially towards the last for hours before closing. Inside, you’ll find everything from fresh fruit and local snacks to handmade hats, clothing, shoes, and souvenirs. The variety is impressive, and the atmosphere is very local, energetic and noisy. It can get pretty crowded and intense, especially in the late afternoon. This is the perfect place to grab local specialties or last-minute gifts. The market closes around 7:00 PM, so it’s best to visit in the morning or late afternoon. It’s a must-see spot in Huế.

🛍️ Dong Ba Market – Busy and fun to explore I visited around 11am to walk around and have lunch. There’s a lot to see, lots of local food, and plenty of things. Worth a quick visit if you’re in Hue!
Virginia L — Google review
Authentic local market, we went on a Monday morning, under 1% tourists. There an upstairs which Sells clothing and material which can be access from stairs in the middle. A good place to practice your bargaining skills and try some local cuisine. The market has sections: kitchen ceramics, baskets weaving, shoes, nuts and grains, fresh flowers, food incense etc.
Sacha — Google review
Great market and street market outside in the week at least when we visited. Friendly owners help guide you through just about every food type and fruit. This is a special market where you can buy your fruit and veggies and tea and then sit and have some fresh food. Buy a bag for the family some shoes and then some jewelry for the wife or girlfriend followed by desert. Where else can you do that in a market.
Andrew D — Google review
Big market that sells everything from great looking fresh fruits and vegetables, traditional snacks, pickles, dried teas, kitchenware, Vietnamese hats to flip lops, high heels, clothing, fresh Sambal/chili sauces, stalls selling freshly made cooked food with seats in front, and even gold stores!
Anita R — Google review
Dong Ba Market is not just a place for trading; it's also a popular destination for tourists eager to explore local cuisine, products, and the unique cultural essence of Hue. It's best to visit in the morning or late afternoon, especially during the summer. The market can get quite hot around midday. When shopping, always ask for the price first. If you're interested, you can bargain down the price, often aiming for one-third or even one-quarter of the initial asking price. Early Days (Quy Gia Thi): The market's origins trace back to the Nguyen Dynasty, initially known as Quy Gia Thi (Market of the Returnees), located outside the Chanh Dong Gate (now Dong Ba Gate). This name commemorated the return of the Nguyen forces after a period of turmoil. Destruction and Reconstruction: In the summer of 1885, when the Hue imperial capital fell, Quy Gia Market was burned down by French colonialists. In 1887, King Dong Khanh ordered its reconstruction and renamed it Dong Ba Market. Relocation and Growth: In 1899, King Thanh Thai moved the market to its current location, close to the Perfume River, between Gia Hoi Bridge and Truong Tien Bridge. Since then, Dong Ba Market has undergone several renovations and developments, becoming a bustling commercial center deeply intertwined with the daily life and culture of the ancient capital's people.

The Mausoleum of Emperor Minh Mang is part of a serene lakeside temple complex that also includes the tombs of other 19th-century emperors. Each tomb reflects the personality and taste of its respective emperor, with statues and monuments arranged to form natural poetry. The mausoleum itself features traditional Eastern architecture inspired by Confucianism and is located at the confluence of Ta Trach and Huu Trac rivers into the Huong River.
A Serene and Majestic Heritage Landmark The Minh Mạng Tomb stands as a remarkable tribute to the splendor of the Nguyễn Dynasty. Nestled among verdant landscapes and tranquil lakes, it provides a serene escape from the pace of contemporary life. The architecture is both impressive and elegantly balanced, featuring intricately designed pavilions, temples, and bridges that harmonize with the natural setting. Impeccably preserved, the site invites visitors to enjoy peaceful walks along its scenic pathways. Rich in historical significance and visual beauty, it’s an essential stop for anyone exploring Huế. The courteous and well-informed staff further enrich the experience with valuable insights. A must-see for those with a passion for Vietnamese history and culture.

Peaceful and Majestic The Tomb of Minh Mạng is one of the most impressive royal tombs in Huế. The architecture is stunning — perfectly symmetrical, with beautiful pavilions, lotus ponds, and quiet paths surrounded by nature. It feels peaceful and grand at the same time. A great place to learn about history and enjoy a calm, scenic walk. Definitely worth including on your Huế itinerary!
Arabelle B — Google review
This mausoleum is very spacious, with beautiful gardens, lakes, and traditional architecture. It feels more peaceful compared to some of the other tombs, and walking around gives you a good sense of history and nature combined. I visited on a day with pleasant weather and only light, short rain, which made the experience enjoyable and refreshing. The site is quite large, so be prepared to walk a bit, but the scenery is worth it. I used a combo ticket that included several sites in Hue, which made the visit good value. Overall, it’s a nice balance of culture, history, and nature – definitely worth including in your trip to Hue.
Mr R — Google review
Absolutely beautiful and breath-taking. Every area was like stepping back into history. I paid for the audio tour guide but I don't think it was very worth it cuz it just had some description of the place, not much about the usage or purpose of that area. It was raining a bit so there was no other visitors there, soooo nice.
Lachasso N — Google review
Unfortunately, our visit here was a real disappointment. It’s not hard to imagine (but we could only imagine) how this might be a lovely place to visit but within a five minute walk from the entrance all else was blocked from further view as all paths leading deeper in to the mausoleum’s premises were blocked by construction, and even near the entrance, little effort seemed to have been made to preserve what should be the serenity and beauty of the place. We strongly feel that this mausoleum should be closed to the public until construction and dredging are complete, or that the entrance fee should either be waived or drastically reduced.
Reginald W — Google review
A stunning and peaceful site, beautifully set among lakes, gardens, and pine trees. The symmetry of the layout is impressive, and every gate, bridge, and pavilion feels perfectly placed. Built in 1843, the tomb reflects Emperor Minh Mang’s vision of harmony between architecture and nature. It’s a relaxing place to walk around, with plenty of shade and photo spots. Definitely one of Hue’s most scenic imperial tombs and well worth visiting.
I. M — Google review
Rented a bike and drive here. Near a beautiful lake and surrounded by water. It makes for a nice walk around. We came mid afternoon on a super hot day so needed to grab some drinks at the entrance and again on the exit. There is toilets and drinks and some food options here. We came on a week day. You pay to park a scooter but they don’t seem to charge locals but price is small. Not as big as we were led to believe but worth visiting.

A Tranquil and Majestic Historical Site

The Minh Mạng Tomb is a magnificent testament to the grandeur of the Nguyễn Dynasty. Set amidst lush greenery and serene lakes, the tomb offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The architecture is both grand and harmonious, with beautifully crafted pavilions, temples, and bridges that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The site is meticulously maintained, and the pathways are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The historical significance of the tomb, combined with its stunning beauty, makes it a must-visit destination in Huế. The Mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc is a stunning tomb and temple complex that pays tribute to the 19th-century ruler in a picturesque setting with a lily pond. Situated near the center of Hue city, this mausoleum is renowned for its harmonious structure and elegant architecture, standing out as one of the most beautiful mausoleums from the Nguyen Dynasty.
This was by far my favorite mausoleum in Hue. It is set within stunning gardens filled with tall pine trees, peaceful ponds, and traditional Vietnamese architecture. It’s a beautifully laid-out complex with lots of open space to walk around, relax, and take in the views. The area is well maintained and shows great care in its restoration efforts. Everything from the stone paths to the wooden pavilions feels thoughtfully preserved. The large lake in the center reflects the buildings and trees beautifully, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. We spent about 45 minutes here, but you could easily stay longer if you enjoy photography or just want to soak up the peaceful surroundings. It wasn’t too crowded when we went, which made it even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this one if you’re visiting Hue—especially if you’re only picking one or two mausoleums to explore. It combines natural beauty, history, and serenity all in one place. Stunning beyond my wildest expectations. I could have spent hours there other than for the heat. Without question the visit here has been my highlight of the whole trip to Hue. Early, early morning or very late afternoon most highly recommended.

This isn't the most popular of the tombs, but it's the most interesting. There's a large park here, where you can stroll in the shade or sit by the lake. Plus, it's close to the city, so it's easy to just wander around in the pleasant atmosphere.

The resting place of Tu Duc King, the longest-reigning emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. This mausoleum is one of the four most beautiful mausoleums in Hue, famed for its poetic and elegant architecture. This enormous construction has 2 main parts: palace and tomb. Take time too walk around and explore this place!
Han N — Google review
Personally I preferred this over the other royal tombs in the area. The site was much larger than I thought it would be, and was lovely to walk around. The grounds were serine and very well kept. Not many information plaques that I could find so maybe an audioguide would be good. Lots of trees so plenty of opportunity to stay in the shade on sunny days.
Delia W — Google review
The Tomb of Tu Duc is a truly serene and beautiful place. It's not just a tomb, but a huge complex of pavilions, temples, and lakes, all set within a peaceful, pine-covered valley. The architecture is stunning, reflecting the emperor's poetic and romantic nature. You can easily spend an hour or two here, walking around the grounds and enjoying the tranquility. It's a must-visit if you're in Huế!
Huy P — Google review
Seen on an extremely wet day (serious flooding in Hue city) this is an interesting complex of temples, buildings and artifacts set in 12 hectares of beautifully laid out grounds with attractive lake, bridges and a temple on stilts. Worth a visit.
Philip B — Google review
Tomb of Tu Duc is my favorite place to escape the city for a bit. As someone from Hue, I’ve been there many times, yet every visit feels peaceful and new. The space is open and full of greenery, with calm lakes and ancient architecture that feels like stepping into an old poem. If you’re visiting Hue, don’t miss Tu Duc Tomb. It’s beautiful, tranquil, and rich with imperial charm — perfect for a quiet, soulful afternoon.

Khai Dinh Tomb, located near Hue City on Chau Chu Mountain, was built for Emperor Khai Dinh of the Nguyen dynasty who passed away in 1925. Despite being unpopular due to his pro-French stance and language reforms, the mausoleum is a grand structure blending Eastern and Western architectural styles. It features dragon sculptures, an imperial court with statues, a lavishly furnished palace room, and a modest temple housing the emperor's grave.
This was the first of the two tombs I visited—and it makes a striking impression. The climb up a long flight of stairs is definitely a bit of a workout, but the reward at the top is worth it. The exterior looks dark and commanding, and once inside, the level of detail in the decoration is stunning. The interiors are incredibly ornate, with intricate mosaics, vibrant tiles, and elaborate dragon motifs covering nearly every surface. It’s visually overwhelming in the best way—feels more like a palace shrine than a mausoleum. The contrast between the somber exterior and colorful interior really stood out. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Huế. Tuesday 7 am–5:30 pm Wednesday. 7 am–5:30 pm Thursday 7 am–5:30 pm Friday 7 am–5:30 pm Saturday 7 am–5:30 pm Sunday 7 am–5:30 pm Monday 7 am–5:30 pm

An absolutely stunning and unique imperial tomb. The mix of Vietnamese and French architectural styles is unlike anything else in Hue, with dark stone exteriors leading to an explosion of colour inside. The interior is covered in intricate glass and porcelain mosaics, and the level of craftsmanship is incredible. The climb up the steps is worth it for the detail and atmosphere. A must-see if you’re exploring Hue’s imperial history.

This site is very impressive with detailed architecture that mixes Vietnamese and French styles. The mosaics inside are beautiful and worth seeing. However, it is quite crowded with many tourists, and the area is not very large, so the visit can feel a bit short compared to other tombs in Hue. I visited using a combo ticket that included several sites, which made it better value for money. Overall, it’s an interesting place to see, especially if you enjoy history and architecture, but don’t expect a quiet experience.

What an incredible visit to the Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh! I traveled here with a group, and we were all truly impressed. The tomb itself is a masterpiece, blending Eastern and Western architecture in a way I've never seen before. The details are stunning—from the grand dragon staircase (as seen in our photos!) to the intricate mosaics inside. Beyond the amazing structure, the atmosphere is very special, and the views of the surrounding hills and nature are just beautiful. It was a memorable and wonderful experience for our entire group. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Vietnam!

Nice to walk around. Inside the building is beautiful and well worth a visit. Also a beautiful view of the mountain. Just be warned there are 127 steps to the top! The statues were also very cool to see. Easy to get a taxi there and back from the centre of town. 150k entry per adult, worth getting the combo ticket at the citadel if you are visiting multiple tombs. Very busy at 3pm!
Alex M — Google review
This extremely ornate mausoleum is a must see. It exemplifies the influence of Chinese style dynasties as the influence the French has in the style of objects preserved with former rulers. This one has a lot of stairs, so make sure to wear something comfortable and beware of the hot season.
Brandon H — Google review
Really lovely palace. There aren't many information plaques so maybe the audioguide would be better for those wanting to know the history of the place. It's not very big and will only take 30-45 minutes (without an audioguide). There isn't too much shade so make sure to bring a hat on sunny days.
Delia W — Google review
The mausoleum was pretty impressive with fantastically detailed decoration. A slightly over-long video with English subtitles gives useful background on this and other notable historic complexes in the area, so worth a watch if your eyes don't glaze over or your brain melts with the plethora of phonetically challenging characters. Seen on a very wet day.

Bridges
Bảo Tàng Lịch Sử Cầu Ngói Thanh Toàn, also known as Thanh Toan Bridge, is an 18th-century wooden footbridge with a tile roof located about seven kilometers outside of Hue. This Japanese-style bridge was built over a small river to provide locals with a means to cross without a boat and offer rural workers respite from the sun.
Went early in the morning and there was no crowd. Nearby shops and local marketplace already opened with quiet bustle. Beautiful traditional old bridge built by a lady in the past to benefit the locals also as a refuge for poor. Nowadays used more as a community space by the old folks. Many coffee joints and eateries around. Free entry.
JuiYong N — Google review
Worth a visit though probably best in Autumn. Check with your hotel about evening activities. Could have night food markets. I went mid morning and it was still lovely to visit. Very serene and stunning. Also worthwhile organising a driver to pick you up after. I was fortunate the same Grab driver returned but I think it may have been difficult otherwise. He recognised the call out.
Gee — Google review
This beautiful historic bridge dates back to 1776 and is incredibly well preserved. Its tile-roofed architecture and ornate dragon motifs make it a great example of traditional Vietnamese design. It’s a peaceful spot to admire the craftsmanship and relax by the water. That said, the surrounding village area felt quite deserted and underdeveloped. There are hints that it once had more tourist potential, but today it’s very quiet and feels somewhat forgotten. Still, if you’re looking to explore something different outside of Hue city, it’s worth a short visit. We walked the 4.5km from Hue, which made for a decent workout under the sun! While the walk is long and the attraction is relatively small, it’s a pleasant side trip—especially if you enjoy historical architecture or scenic photography. Tip: There are some lovely photo angles from across the canal and under the trees. If you’re already in Hue and have time to spare, it’s a nice detour.
John W — Google review
Looking for a cool spot with a lot of history near Hue? You should definitely check out Thanh Toan Bridge! It’s a super old covered bridge that was built in the 18th century by a high-ranking official’s wife, and the villagers have kept it in great condition ever since. Even though it looks a bit like the Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An, it has its own special charm. It's a great place to explore and learn about local history and culture.

A small, covered bridge with an old beautiful design that's quaint and charming. There's a small altar in the middle and you can pay a small amount to a lady there who will sell you incense if you want to pay your respects. It doesn't seem to be a really busy attraction, but rather a nice one where you get to admire the history and traditional architecture.
Adrian M — Google review
They have a night market so it's best to go during sunset so you can take pictures but also enjoy the food.

Nice place to visit. Better to go on weekend morning because you can feel the village market life. The bridge is located a bit far from city center. But the surrounding makes you feeling confort and peace.

The Nine Holy Cannons, dating back to 1804, stand as symbolic protectors near the Citadel ramparts. Commissioned by Emperor Gia Long using captured weapons from a defeated dynasty, each cannon was personally named and given an honorary military rank. Five of these cannons represent the five earthly elements while the remaining four symbolize the seasons.
The other set of cannons are down by the gate just beyond the Flag Tower to the west.
David W — Google review
We were walking around in hot sun lol we were there on the 31th of May and the weather was burning hot but still there're wind blowing us from time to time. There're also the tricycle trip around the area which was so nice 👍 I like it here!
Pook S — Google review
The Cửu Vị Thần Công (Nine Holy Cannons) are not merely military relics but colossal works of art, significant cultural and historical symbols that attract visitors eager to explore the beauty and profound meaning of Hue Ancient Capital. Despite being cannons, they were never used in combat but primarily for solemn court ceremonies, such as imperial birthday celebrations, New Year festivities, or the Nam Giao Esplanade rituals. They were regarded as sacred guardians, protecting the citadel, symbolizing the dynasty's power, authority, and the nation's peace. Each cannon is massive, measuring approximately 5.1 meters (16.7 feet) in length, with a barrel diameter of 23 cm (9 inches), and an average weight of about 11 tons. In the cannon bodies are intricately carved with patterns of dragons, mythical creatures (lân), clouds, and Chinese characters detailing the cannon's name, casting year, weight, and the name of the supervisor.
Nguyen L — Google review
Right inside the Citadel walls, near the gates on either side of the Flag Tower, you'll find the Nine Holy Cannons (from 1804). They were meant to be symbolic protectors of the palace and the kingdom. These aren't just any cannons—they were commissioned by Emperor Gia Long and were never meant to be fired. The cool thing is, the four cannons near Ngan Gate represent the four seasons, while the five next to Quang Duc Gate stand for the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Each one is 5 meters long and weighs about 10 tons!
Do C — Google review

Simon H — Google review

Nuve S — Google review
The cannons are truly beautiful. On one side, they depict the four seasons, and on the other side, the five elements. They are displayed outdoors, so there is no entrance fee. The location itself is very scenic, adding to the charm of the visit. You can enjoy the intricate designs of the cannons while taking in the natural beauty of the surroundings. It's a peaceful and inviting spot, perfect for a leisurely stroll or spending some quiet time appreciating the artistry and symbolism of the cannons. The fact that it's free to visit makes it even more appealing, allowing everyone to experience this unique blend of art and nature without any cost.

Cung Diên Thọ is an elegant residence that was built in 1804 and served as the living quarters and audience hall for the Queen Mothers of the Nguyen dynasty. Although partially ruined, it still exudes grandeur and offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the imperial family. The site features an exhibition showcasing photos depicting its former glory. Visitors can take a moment to relax within its elaborate surroundings, but should be cautious of slippery walkway tiles, especially during rainy weather.

Get ready for a $6.50 taxi ride just to leave once inside. They know that with the heat, they can charge the elderly a lot. This place is overpriced and a tourist trap. Terrible customer service. Charge and don't even let you know that half the buildings are under construction or maintenance. Maybe, for the Vietnam version, it's an okay place. But compared to any civilized part of the world, aka Korea, China, Japan, this place is a money pit. It's not worth any value. Sad looking run down place. It's good for a few pictures and not worth time spent actually going in. Also, the taxi ride was not only overpriced but a terrible driver lady we felt like going to be thrown from the open air car with no doors.

Accompanied by a local guide on a motorcycle, you'll sample an array of specialties including Vietnamese tea, Hue royal cakes, khot cake, BBQ dishes, grilled squid, beef noodle soup, and sweet soups. The tour also includes a visit to the market to explore fresh produce and meats.
We had a fantastic time with Thom, we were lucky and had a private tour with just him for the two of us. The food we tried was delicious, we finally weren‘t afraid to try some street food. He also explained a lot about Vietnamese food culture and ingredients, where to proved to be a true expert. We would certainly recommend Thom for anyone looking to do a food tour!

We've experienced an amazing time with our family of 5. Thom really goes the extra step for you. His English is very good and takes you to places that you can't find by yourself. So nice that you don't have to worry about hygiene standards and worry about the ingredients of your food. The small market tour that's included is also really nice. Our small kids really enjoyed the cyclo. The drivers were so nice to them. Would really recommend this tour!
Elseline B — Google review
Thom is a very thoughtful and kind tour guide. He provided us water bottles; made sure we found clean restrooms throughout the day. His drivers were also thoughtful: when we stopped at stop lights they made sure we waited under shade. At every stop they lifted the seat cushion so when we returned it wouldn’t be hot from the sun. They did a lot of small kind gestures like that throughout the day. We also learned so much about local cuisine and fruits and veggies! Thom was also so helpful to us outside of food: helping us with a local tailor and grocery store. My only suggestion: skip breakfast! Thom will feed you!
Redza P — Google review
We had a fabulous time on this tour. Thom provides so much knowledge into the food from the area and cooking tips for the local food we saw in the market it was so fun to hear and learn it all. The selection of food was so tasty trying local dishes from the area and interesting to hear how they compared with other areas in Vietnam and where influences come from. Overall would highly recommend the trip the bikes are fun too so thanks to our drivers. One final thing we thought was really good is Thom is so conscious of ensuring we had clean hands before eating providing wipes/hand sanitizer which we appreciated. Lovely to meet Thom and thanks for welcoming us to Hue!
Zoe M — Google review
My wife and I had the food tour to ourselves! How lucky were we! Thom met us at our hotel with his two cyclocab drivers. Thom provided us with an extensive list of foods we were going to experience during our 3+ hour tour. Thom is extremely knowledgable and definitely took us to some of the best local eateries that we probably wouldn’t have experienced during our short stay in Hue. DO NOT eat before this tour!! You will have more than enough food. Highlights for us were the beef noodle soup, the Hue pancake, the grilled pork vermicelli and the special coffee. Thom also walks you through the large market that includes, fruit, veggies, seafood and everything else you can imagine. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

We had an amazing time on the Hue Flavor Street Food Tour. Thom was an excellent and passionate guide. We were so glad that this was the tour we chose to do. There were plenty of tastings and we loved everything we tried. Couldn’t choose a favourite. We were transported between tastings by two very capable cyclo men. We also enjoyed a walk through the market, and got to experience plenty of the street scape. We have done many food tours around the world, and this tour was the best ever! And one of the tastiest!
Tracey S — Google review
Excellent food tour! Thom is an outstanding tour guide. He’s such a joyful, considerate guy and his passion for Huế cuisine is infectious. The tour is really good value for the experience, as you stop at multiple places and get to taste a range of dishes. We even visited the Đông Ba Market, where Thom guided us around. We interacted w the sellers and learned a lot about the traditional foods at the market. Thom has deep knowledge about the history of the foods, their preparation and the cultural contexts of the dishes, not to mention fluent English to deliver all of that knowledge. The cyclo ride is also a nice touch. As it was drizzling during our tour, the cyclo drivers went out of their way to make sure we were totally dry and comfortable during the tour, providing rain jackets and covers. It was cool to see all parts of the city. Riding down some of the beautiful small alleyways makes you feel like you’re traveling back in time! Overall, I’d highly recommend this tour for anyone coming to Huế who is interested in getting to know this lovely city and its delicious food. Thanks again for a great time Thom!

The Hue Historic Citadel, also known as the Imperial City of Hue, is a significant attraction in Vietnam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It served as the royal palace for the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years. The walled fortress spans 10 kilometers with impressive fortifications and features like the Imperial Enclosure and Forbidden Purple City. Visitors can explore attractions such as the ceremonial Thai Hoa Palace and Ngo Mon Gate within this historical complex.
The Imperial City (Hoàng thành), located inside the walled city of Huế, was the former royal capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen dynasty This is recognized by UNESCO as the world cultural heritage for over 30 years. I have experience many vicissitudes of history of Vietnam over centuries from many dynasties until Vietnam became a republic. The imperial city is still a long lasting and remain one of the most cherished values. Visitors will be able to learn about the 13 Nguyen dynasty kings who ruled Vietnam from 18th century to 1945. The many palace buildings that spread across the big compound was nice and grand and somehow you will feel that history has come alive from walking around. Note that the traveller could be spending half a day for walking tour.

Was really nice to be able to walk the walls of the citadel and the information panels along the way added all the relevant info. Hue Imperial City was built in 1804 under King Gia Long and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. I love walking around the ancient palace and admire the beauty at every corner. Hundred years ago, it used to a enormous and glorious palace. Sadly, many constructions are damaged, though they are being restored, could not bring back the original spirit of the place. The atmosphere was quite sad in a rainy day.

Come to the palace for a photo op, especially in traditional costumes. It's not a particularly interesting place for a casual tour, but it's beautiful in its details. If you're visiting on a sunny day, be sure to bring an umbrella, as there's very little shade.
TatyanKA G — Google review
Overall, it was a solid experience, though I expected a bit more. The complex is huge, but the overall layout could be better organized. I didn’t take the audio guide because I don’t like using headphones — probably a mistake. The descriptions of the monuments were quite minimal and not very engaging. I also chose a bad day to visit since it was extremely hot.

Lạc Thiện Restaurant, located near Hue Imperial City, is a popular spot for both locals and international tourists. The restaurant is known for its famous dish, banh khoa, which is similar to a stuffed crepe served with peanut sauce. The menu offers a wide variety of authentic Hue specialties and vegan options. Situated in the bustling market district of Hue, this family-run eatery captures the essence of the city's culinary scene.
Possibly the best meal we had in Vietnam! We ordered 5 different plates and they were all excellent! Highly recommended, especially the pork spring rolls, super flaky and delicious!

For a TripAdvisor recommended place, I have had better meals in Hue. The food is just fine, and for the quality, the prices are elevated compared to other similar places in the city. If you are a quieter person like I am, I am not sure if the atmosphere will be for you.

Tu Dam Pagoda is a serene Buddhist temple complex in Hue, founded in 1683 and later became a site of anti-government protests in the 1960s. Tucked away behind the main railway station, it offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful landscaped grounds and magnificent mahogany buildings adorned with silk lanterns. This pagoda is part of Hue's collection of unique architectural wonders that blend old and new art, providing visitors with a mystical spiritual experience.
Từ Đàm Pagoda in Huế is one of the most peaceful and spiritually significant places I’ve ever visited. Nestled in the heart of the ancient imperial city, this pagoda is not only a place of worship but also a cultural and historical landmark that reflects the deep roots of Vietnamese Buddhism. What makes Từ Đàm Pagoda especially meaningful to me is the legacy of one of its most revered monks: Venerable Thích Trí Quang. I have long admired him for his intellect, his dedication to Buddhism, and especially his work translating and interpreting many important Buddhist texts into Vietnamese. His influence on Vietnamese Buddhism, both in spiritual and cultural terms, is profound. Though he has passed away, his spirit and teachings are very much alive in this sacred space. It was incredibly moving to walk through the grounds and know that this was a place he once walked, taught, and meditated. The pagoda itself is beautiful — quiet, clean, and filled with the scent of incense. The architecture is traditional yet timeless, with a large main hall, well-tended gardens, and statues that inspire a deep sense of calm and reverence. The monks and caretakers are kind and respectful, and there is a genuine atmosphere of compassion and wisdom here. If you are in Huế and seeking a meaningful spiritual experience — or simply want a quiet space to reflect — I highly recommend visiting Từ Đàm Pagoda. For me, it was more than a visit; it was a moment of connection with history, faith, and the legacy of a great teacher.

Tu Dam Temple can be dated in the 17th century. However the Pagoda on the site looks pretty recent. It is a calm place with almost no tourists and worth a visit if you are in Hue. There is an impressive tree on the site which is supposed to represent the Bodhi Tree under which Buddha was enlightened. That is what makes it special.
Oliver K — Google review
Beautiful and serene pagoda. No tourists and you will find monks praying. You can sit and relax and pray here and spend hours doing nothing. No ticket to enter.

Tu Dam pagoda locates in Su Lieu Quan street. It is only 2km from the centre of Hue city. It is known for one of the oldest pogada in Viet Nam. There are three parts in the pagoda which includes the three entrance gate, the main sanctuary and the conference House. The atmosphere is fresh and peaceful. It has a big bodhi tree in the right. Let try to sit on the benches under it and see the leaves and sky. It is so wonderful. I was attracted by the tower with 7 floors. The flowers bloom in the back yard. The wind chimes creates wonderful sound that makes visiters' soul resful.

Located at the heart of the Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam, The Flag Tower, also known as Ky Da, stands proudly opposite the main entrance of the Citadel. Constructed during Emperor Gia Long's rule in the early 19th century, this iconic tower has witnessed multiple reconstructions due to damage over time. As Vietnam's tallest flagpole, it has flown various flags throughout the country's rich history.
The flag Tower or Ky Dai is centrally located, holding significant feng shui importance, forming a sacred axis extending from Ngo Mon. Together with other structures, it creates a harmonious overall layout, reflecting the "front altar" concept in traditional architectural composition. It was built in 1807 during the reign of King Gia Long. The three-tiered structure of Ky Dai not only has architectural meaning but also embodies the Eastern philosophy of "Heaven - Earth - Human" (Thiên - Địa - Nhân). The widest bottom tier symbolizes Earth, the middle tier represents Humanity, and the compact top tier signifies Heaven. This reflects the harmony between the cosmos and human beings in feudal thought.
Nguyen L — Google review
We saw it the first on a perfume River cruise to the Thien Mu Pogoda. Then again when we visited the Citadel. It is the largest flagpole in Viet Nam, 120 feet. Originally erected in 1807, destroyed by a typhoon in 1904 , rebuilt to be destroyed again in 1947 and finally rebuilt in 1948.

Thai Hoa Palace, located in Hue, Vietnam, is a significant 19th-century structure within the Royal Palace. It served as the governing center for over a century under the Nguyen dynasty. The palace showcases traditional royal architecture adorned with intricate enameled bronzeware, gilding, and lacquer featuring symbolic dragon and cloud motifs. The Salutation Court in front of the palace was where important ceremonies took place.
The majestic palace structure for the emperor receiving visitors, designed to impress with ornate detailing and gold splashed throughout. After you enjoy the main throne room, you can view some museum exhibits at the back before exiting to enjoy the rest of the palace grounds.

The Thai Hoa Palace is the largest, most majestic, and magnificent building left from the Nguyen Dynasty. Besides being the place for state ceremonies, it also symbolized power and harmony, showing the Nguyen emperors’ philosophy of how to rule. As a part of the Complex of Hue Monuments, Thai Hoa Palace was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993. This palace doesn't just hold historical value; it's an important cultural symbol that attracts visitors from all over Vietnam and the world to admire its unique royal architecture and the rich legacy of the Nguyen Dynasty.

The Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities (Bảo tàng Cổ vật Cung đình) is a fascinating journey into Vietnam’s royal past. Located in Hue, the former imperial capital, this museum is housed in a traditional wooden structure, reflecting the architectural beauty of the Nguyen Dynasty. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by an impressive collection of artifacts, each offering a glimpse into the rich history and refined culture of the Vietnamese royalty. The museum’s exhibits include intricately crafted ceramics, ornate clothing, and ceremonial items used by the Nguyen emperors. One highlight is the collection of imperial seals and personal belongings, which convey the power and elegance of the imperial court. The presentation is tasteful and respectful, with detailed descriptions (in both Vietnamese and English), making it easy to appreciate the cultural significance of each item. The serene, well-maintained garden surrounding the museum adds to the experience, providing a peaceful place for reflection after the tour. The museum staff are knowledgeable and happy to answer questions, enhancing the educational experience. Overall, the Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities is a must-visit for anyone interested in Vietnamese history and heritage. This museum offers a 5/5 star experience, skillfully blending education, history, and beauty into an unforgettable visit in Hue.

A must-see museum, in my opinion, especially if you visit the imperial ckty because it is just next to it. It is not big, but it contains many marvelous artifacts. Ancient imperial thrones, bronze urns, delicate sophisticated decorations, and even nany old cannons in the courtyard garden. You need to take off your shoes to enter inside as this is considered like some sort of shrine. It takes a maximum of 30 minutes to see everything, and you can get here and from here with taxi/grab as it is on an accessible street.

Hồ Thuỷ Tiên, an abandoned water park located in Hue, Vietnam, has become a popular photography spot. The park features disused water slides and empty splash pools that are now overgrown by jungle flora. Despite being officially closed by the government, it continues to attract visitors who are eager to explore its mysterious and magical ambiance. Although guards prevent public access, adventurous travelers have found ways to enter the park and capture its haunting beauty through photography.
Pretty great place for a walk. The actual abandoned park is a fairly small area with two main attractions the dragon island and some overgrown slides and pool. You can actually take the stairs all the way to the top of the dragon which is pretty cool. The whole place feels like a maze with lots of winding stairs which is awesome. The walk around the lake was also very nice and relaxing.
Michal N — Google review
Truly stunning park. Walk around a lovely abandoned waterpark and head into the dragon head. You can enter for free but there is a guy who will explain that he helps clean the park and he asks for about 25k per person and bike as "charity" he will give you a free bottle of water. You can hire bikes from him and cycle around it. You're not allowed to drive around it. If you go off the path a bit you may discover other decrepit watersides. Its a nice place to get some good camera footage. Its well kept and beautiful and sunset.
Jimmy F — Google review
An ideal spot for walking, cycling, or enjoying a picnic. The area features a spacious grassy field shaded by cool pine trees, offering a peaceful and airy atmosphere. The newly constructed path around the lake is beautiful and easy to walk on. The best time to visit is around 4 PM when the weather is cool and perfect for a stroll. There’s a cluster of structures in the middle of the lake that hasn’t been restored yet—it has a wild, untouched charm but also gives off an unpleasant odor due to long-term neglect. Cold drinks are available at reasonable prices. Bicycles are available for rent at the gate. Entrance is completely free.
Dave H — Google review
Ho Thuy Tien is such a fascinating urban exploration park! The old buildings and overgrown areas make it really photogenic and fun to explore. Just a little tip, be careful as night falls! We got a bit lost ourselves, and let’s just say the ghosts didn’t hand us a map. Bring a flashlight and a sense of adventure, it’s totally worth it!
Mathilde B — Google review
Amazing. Went early afternoon, hardly anyone there. Dragon structure is pretty solid and very safe. Easy to take stairs to the top. Nice graffiti. Well worth the effort to get there. No hassle from any security guards.
Stuart L — Google review
Would have been a fun park to go to when it was operating and I hope it gets there again. The dragon looks impressive but smells like urine inside really. You can hire bikes and do a 2k loop around the lake which is not bad if it's not to hot. The dragon is only a short walk from the carpark so you don't need to hire them.
Paul J — Google review
Totally missable! The path around the lake is beautiful of you want to enjoy a run or a walk. I got the bike from the people at the entrance (for 50,000) as they said it was 2km and I didn't have much time. It isn't 2km, you can walk no prob, the bikes are in bad condition anyway. The statue is ok, but just an old structure, amid many amazing things in Vietnam, I would prefer to spend my time somwhere else. I only spend a night in Hue, but to me, thebonly thing worth visiting was the Imperial city.

Very nice place with some nice views of the Citadel but you need to try to position yourself well and pick the right table. I ordered a coffee and read about the Citadel’s history. It was very nice and chilled. The staff were very responsive. The coffee is a bit expensive (about 10-15k more expensive than standard) but it was tasty and they gave me a paper straw, not a plastic one which I am very happy about. This is something that is still missing in the majority of cafes, bars and restaurant Vietnam!

Bridge
Cầu Trường Tiền, also known as Trang Tien Bridge, is a 402.60m long bridge spanning the Perfume River in Hue, Vietnam. It features six spans of comb-shaped steel beams and is designed in Gothic architecture. The bridge is a popular spot for locals and tourists to visit souvenir shops offering lacquerware, handicrafts, and unique Hue souvenirs.
An absolute standout when the sun sets—Trường Tiền Bridge lights up in a stunning display of colors that reflect beautifully on the Perfume River. The ever-changing lights transition between vibrant green, purple, red, blue, yellow, and even a rainbow sequence, making it a photographer’s dream at night. The bridge itself is an iconic structure connecting the two sides of Huế, with easy access for pedestrians. It’s not a long walk, but it’s one you’ll want to take slowly to enjoy the views and atmosphere. The lighting setup is really well done—tasteful, modern, and enhances the whole riverside area. Definitely worth visiting just before dusk so you can catch the transformation as the lights begin to glow. A great spot for an evening stroll, night photography, or just soaking in Huế’s riverside charm.
John W — Google review
the bridge is narrow, nearly always crowded with cars and scooters and the pedestrian walkways are separated from the road by a fairly wide gap. There is some nice lighting that illuminates the bridge at night.
Bobby C — Google review
The iconic bridge in Hue is a stunning sight at night, with its vibrant colors changing every minute. It is truly a beautiful and mesmerizing sight to behold.
Hari F — Google review
A historical, iron bridge was great to see, but not WOW. Probably would have been better to see during the evening when the lights turn on. A walk across the bridge with a river view was great in spite of having many cars and scooters driving next to you.

As a tourist, Truong Tien Bridge in Hue left a lasting impression on me. The bridge's graceful iron arches and its historical significance immediately drew me in. Walking across it, I was captivated by the stunning views of the Perfume River, which offers a serene contrast to the bustling city around it. During the day, the bridge bustles with activity, providing a glimpse into the daily life of locals and fellow travelers. At night, the bridge transforms into a dazzling display of lights, reflecting beautifully on the water and creating a magical atmosphere. The blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty makes Truong Tien Bridge a memorable highlight of my visit to Hue.

Cafe Tứ Tượng, located in Tu Tuong Park, offers a delightful experience with a variety of lotus-based products such as paintings, jam, tea, liquor, and cloth from different regions of Vietnam. The cafe provides a serene ambiance by the riverfront where visitors can enjoy the cool breeze and good coffee while taking in views of the river and Trang Tien Bridge.
This river front cafe offers cool breeze, good coffee and a relaxing ambiance. We went in January though so we're able to skip the summer humidity.

The passion fruit juice is delicious and there are a lot of locals there! It offers a beautiful view of the river and would recommend coming here for sunset. The chairs are comfy and the decorations are beautiful. The staff are friendly enough. The drinks are a bit overpriced for what they are. Overall, I think you mainly pay for the view.

Cửa Hiển Nhơn, also known as Hien Nhon Gate, is a picturesque stop located on the east side of the Imperial Citadel in Hue. This gate, built in 1805 during King Gia Long's reign, serves as an exit point for visitors exploring the Citadel and leads to attractions like Nguyen Van Tro park and Tinh Tam lake. The gate's beautiful tile mosaic details make it a popular photo spot, especially at night when it is illuminated.
It may not be the largest, but it’s definitely the most beautiful gate to the old Imperial City. With its vibrant colors and intricate tilework, its charm still stands despite visible signs of neglect. The bridge and lily pad-filled moat add to the romantic atmosphere of the place.

Not the largest, but definitely the prettiest gate to the old Imperial city. Colorful and covered in tilework, its beauty shines through the neglect that it is obviously a victim of. The bridge and lily pad filled moat add to the romantic vibe of this place

Archaeological site
Dien Can Chanh, located within the Purple Forbidden City in Hue Imperial City, served as the residence for the Queen Mother and her attendants. This elegant palace is characterized by its intricate wooden structure and beautiful design. Situated in front of Noi Dinh, where kings would dine and engage in recreational activities, Dien Can Chanh also features a spacious yard and a picturesque lake.
HY VỌNG NHÀ NƯỚC TA SỚM PHỤC DỰNG ĐIỆN CẦN CHÁNH HUY HOÀNG NHƯ THUỞ VÀNG SON NHÀ NGUYỄN Điện Cần Chánh(Cần Chánh Palace) was one of the most important structures within the Huế Imperial City during the Nguyễn Dynasty. It served as the imperial throne room where the emperor conducted state affairs, hosted grand ceremonies, and received high-ranking officials and foreign envoys. It was a symbol of imperial power and authority. Historical and Architectural Significance: 1.Function and Usage: Điện Cần Chánh was where the emperor met with his mandarins (officials) for important discussions on governance, laws, and policies. It was a center of political activity, where decisions affecting the entire nation were made. 2.Confucian Symbolism: The design of Điện Cần Chánh adhered to Confucian principles, emphasizing harmony, hierarchy, and balance. This architectural layout mirrored the structured, hierarchical nature of Nguyễn governance, reflecting the emperor’s role as the "Son of Heaven" responsible for maintaining order and balance in the world. 3.Impressive Structure: The palace was notable for its size and grandeur, built primarily from wood and decorated with intricate carvings and lacquered details. It had a double roof and wide courtyards, which provided space for large assemblies. Inside, the throne was placed on a raised platform, emphasizing the emperor's elevated status. 4.Cultural Importance: Major ceremonies like the New Year (Tết) celebrations, the emperor’s birthday, and other state events took place here. These rituals and events reinforced the emperor’s legitimacy and his central role in maintaining the harmony of the kingdom. Historical Events and Destruction: Unfortunately, Điện Cần Chánh was heavily damaged during the wars, particularly the Battle of Huế in 1968, and today only remnants of the original structure remain. Efforts have been made to restore parts of the palace, but much of its grandeur exists only in historical records and old photographs. Cultural Legacy: Điện Cần Chánh symbolizes the grandeur of the Nguyễn Dynasty at its peak. Its role as a ceremonial and political hub highlights the blend of governance, Confucian ideals, and cultural sophistication that defined the court at Huế. The palace remains a focal point in discussions about the architecture and history of imperial Vietnam.

This used to be the palace where the king worked. Only the original foundation remains, the new palace is the replica built recently. The palace was demolished by the Vietminh in 1947 (the first Indochina war) to prepare for the war with the French when the French came back to regain the power. This palace is located between the Forbidden City (the King's residence) and the Royal Court

(Translated by Google) CAN CHANH PALACE – HISTORICAL IMPRESSION IN THE HEART OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY OF HUE In the heart of the Imperial City of Hue, behind the majestic Thai Hoa Palace is Can Chanh Palace – which used to be the main hall for the daily work of the Nguyen Dynasty kings. Although the building now only has its foundation and is in the process of restoration, the historical value and architectural imprint of the palace still make it a meaningful stop for those who love Hue and Vietnamese royal culture. 🏛 Central role of the royal court Can Chanh Palace was built in 1804, right after the capital Phu Xuan was chosen as the capital under the Gia Long Dynasty. This was where the king held daily court meetings, discussed state affairs with his ministers, received envoys, organized royal examinations and important ceremonies in the inner palace. The name “Can Chanh” means to encourage the ruler to be “diligent and upright” – in line with the spirit of governing the country and Confucian ethics of feudal times. 🏯 Unique and distinctive ancient architecture Can Chanh Palace was once the largest and most beautiful wooden structure in the Forbidden City, with a “double-roofed” structure (2-storey roof), with a yellow glazed tile roof, elaborately carved lim columns, especially the extremely vivid dragon – unicorn – turtle – phoenix decoration system. This is also one of the few structures in the Imperial City connected to other palaces by a system of royal corridors, demonstrating the close connection in the living and working space of the Nguyen Dynasty kings. 🏗️ Current status and restoration process Due to war and time, the palace was severely damaged and completely dismantled in 1947, now only the brick foundation, steps, and some ancient vestiges remain. However, the good news is that the palace is being restored, starting in 2023, with the support of the Korean government and relic restoration experts. The project is expected to restore almost the original architecture of the ancient palace, expected to be completed around 2027, marking the revival of a precious heritage. 📍 Experience when visiting Visitors can now visit the palace grounds and view information panels and 3D reconstruction drawings to better visualize the scale and beauty of the ancient building. This area is often less crowded than Thai Hoa Palace, creating a quieter and more solemn feeling. If you love history, don't forget to spend time reading the documents in this area - you will see a part of the "backstage" of the Nguyen Dynasty's power. 🔖 Summary: Can Chanh Palace is the administrative heart of Hue Imperial City, where the major decisions of the Nguyen Dynasty were recorded for more than a century. Although it has not been fully restored yet, the ancient foundation and the information on display are enough to make this place a must-see attraction for history lovers and the ancient capital's heritage. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 (Waiting for the day of complete reconstruction to return to its worthy position in the Hue Imperial City) (Original) ĐIỆN CẦN CHÁNH – DẤU ẤN LỊCH SỬ TRONG LÒNG TỬ CẤM THÀNH HUẾ Giữa lòng Đại Nội Huế, sau Điện Thái Hòa uy nghi là Điện Cần Chánh – nơi từng là chính điện làm việc hàng ngày của các vua triều Nguyễn.
