Irish pub
The Shamrock Irish Bar has firmly established itself as a must-visit hotspot for nightlife in Kota Kinabalu, drawing both locals and travelers seeking a vibrant atmosphere. Nestled along the picturesque waterfront, this lively bar is perfect for unwinding after work or enjoying a laid-back evening with friends. With its inviting ambiance and stunning views of Sabah's breathtaking sunsets, arriving early is key to snagging the best seats.
We were here for New Year’s eve and had a wonderful time! Visited 3 times during our 5 day stay. It was one of our favourite spots to chill! The food was delish and the drinks too! Live band is absolutely wonderful 🤩 The owner is very gracious as well 😄 Must visit place if you’re in KK 🫶🏽
Rachita G — Google review
The place has a nice vibe and is a good spot to enjoy a cold beer. Unfortunately, during the rain, the roof leaks and water was dripping directly onto my shirt. It’s a shame because this really took away from the experience. I hope the owner takes some time to address the roofing issues and also pay closer attention to hygiene and overall safety. This place has potential but definitely needs some maintenance.
Naim Z — Google review
Great place to have a couple of refreshing drinks, either inside in the airconditioned bar, or outside where you can enjoy relaxing sea views. The staff are very polite and pleasant and make you feel very welcome. Really liked the music they played too. The bar serves several draft beers, along with bottled choices too. We had a couple of Long Island Ice Teas and these really kicked a punch! We didn't try the food, but the menu looked extensive and the people that we saw eating seemed very satisfied. I'd definitely recommend The Shamrock Bar to anyone looking for anything from a relaxing drink, to a more energetic game of pool.
Richard W — Google review
Thank you for a great visit and learning about your bar. Excellent restroom with high standards. I appreciate! Everyone was so hospitable and the atmosphere was wonderful. The view from the patio to the bay was priceless and I loved the music playing in the bar. Great job on the Black and Tan. So fun!!
Suzanne B — Google review
The Shamrock Irish Bar is hands down one of the best spots in town! Great atmosphere, super friendly staff, and live music that really brings the place to life 🍀. The drinks are reasonably priced, and their Guinness is always poured perfectly 🍻. Perfect place to chill with friends or meet new people. Highly recommend!
Ooo X — Google review
All good Have to enter small alley beside Kuta Bistro and look for this bar on the same deck with some other bars. Their signboard in the beach side only, not in front of the complex
Frozen Y — Google review
If you're a Guinness aficionado, like what I am (?) this is the only bar in town. Great staff a fine pint and stunning views of the Sun going down but alas not the prices. Don't waste your time seeking a better bar in KK.
Kenny B — Google review
Food taste okay, but on the good side, the servings are very generous. Great for big eaters. A typical bar environment offering happy hour promotion. Unfortunately, the beers are immensely watered down. If you're coming for happy hour, do order the bottled beer for better value. Great and attentive service from the waitress. Good live band.

Western restaurant
Mexican restaurant
Restaurant
El Centro is a vibrant Mexican-themed restaurant and bar located in Kota Kinabalu, offering a laid-back atmosphere to enjoy good food, drinks, and 90s tunes. The menu features a variety of Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, and fajitas as well as burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. Classic cocktails such as margaritas and mint juleps are available at affordable prices.
Went on a lovely lunch date with my mom at El Centro, and we had such a great time! We started with their homemade nachos, which were really good—crispy, fresh, and full of flavor. For the mains, I had the Hawaiian pizza, and it was absolutely delicious—perfectly baked with a great balance of sweet and savory flavors. My mom had the salad wrap, and she loved it! It was fresh, light, and packed with tasty ingredients. Overall, the food was amazing, and the cozy atmosphere made the experience even better. Definitely a great spot for a casual and delicious meal!

Fantastic lunch! We had loaded chicken fries and lamb kofta plus cocktails. Was a lovely experience and the waiter was so polite, very attentive and was helpful with dietary restrictions. Cocktails also very good and strong tasting! Came back for more dinner and cocktails as the food, drinks and service were so good! Highly recommend and also GLUTEN FREE options available!
Clarissa W — Google review
The food was Ahhmazing! I had chicken, cranberry and blue cheese panini. Ooof. The flavors were bomb. Super yummy. Hummus was so authentic. Texture was perfect, maybe it was hand mashed. 👌 My friend had Ultimate Veggie panini. Ordinary ingredients but tasted extraordinary.
Imelda P — Google review
This place probably has one of the best mexican foods in kk. I love their burritos, tacos and especially their nachos. I ALWAYS go back for their nachos because i lovveeee how the chips taste. They dont use those chachos chips you can get from the store i think they probably use real nachos chips and its so good even on its own. I always go back here!
Kiera . — Google review
Went there during the afternoon and I can say it's the best time to dine if you're looking for a quiet space. Their Beef Quesadilla is topnotch.Mojito made by Nana is great. It taste the same as the one usually had in my home country. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for Mexican food. ❤️
Clazany G — Google review
Food here is LIT especially the tacos n pizza, we ordered the minced beef and steak mix tacos as well as CCB pizza, both taste so unique and so different than other tacos n pizza that I ever had bfor. We ordered the beetroot juice too, changed my stereotype on how beetroot would taste, it's refreshing, natural sweet, and good source of fibre. Really recommend this place for dinner or night out, the atmosphere vibes so well, good place for gathering w friends and family.
Lex T — Google review
Came super early for a Saturday breakfast and ordered the pulled steak with rice and 3 beans burrito with ice latte. I was actually surprised to be served with a sweet ice latte as normally ice latte is served without sugar. The waitress was kind enough to replace it for me as I told her I didn't specify no sugar as normally latte is served without sugar. However, the replaced ice latte was a bit disappointing as I couldn't taste much of the coffee, too bland.
Steph — Google review
I didn’t get to try the tacos because I was too full. They don’t have Taco Tuesday, but the drinks were good, and the service was great. They accept credit cards here. Nice atmosphere!

Bar
Sunset Bar, located at Shangri-Tanjung Las Ara Resort and Spa, offers a more secluded and intimate setting, making it ideal for a romantic beachside date night. The bar's design is inspired by traditional indigenous homes of Borneo, reflected in its cocktail menu. True to its name, Sunset Bar provides unparalleled panoramic views without the need to compete for the perfect spot.
Perched at the edge of Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, this is where sunsets aren’t just watched.. they’re celebrated. With an unobstructed view of the South China Sea, a cocktail in hand, and a golden sky melting into the horizon, it’s easy to see why this spot is legendary. The Sabah Sling is a must-try, blending gin, local rice wine, and citrus for a tropical kick. Premium seats get snapped up fast, so book ahead if you want front-row views to nature’s nightly masterpiece.
The G — Google review
Fantastic spot for the sunset. Opens at 5pm but you need to pick a package to enter. Minimum is 48 MYR per person and you get 1 drink and seats at the bar. Other packages get you a table seat with an uninterrupted view of the sunset. At 7pm everyone pretty much leaves. You can arrive at 6:50 and walk straight in. Happy hour starts at 7pm BOGOF. Shout out to Hannif who made us so welcome. We didn't eat.
Brian W — Google review
Bad choice for dinner. There is no parking inside of the building, we had to park outside at the public car park which was overcrowded. Food was a huge let down with soggy and watery cabonara. Hawaiian pizza tastes really weird , it tasted like Korean sauce mix. Waited 40min for our food. We had to move tables halfway through because of the rain, adding to my bad experience. Better to have sunset dinner else where. Total rm250 , definitely not worth the price.
Vivian T — Google review
Located within the Shangri-La Resort, it offers an excellent spot to witness breathtaking sunsets, with fishing boats dotting the sea, creating a truly refreshing atmosphere. The bar's environment is stylish and comfortable, serving a variety of drinks and snacks, making it perfect for enjoying a cocktail at dusk and soaking in the glow of the setting sun.
楊俊德 — Google review
The food and vibe was great. Especially the staff “ gloria” is really awsome, she is soo kind and fun. I hope we’ll see again. Gloria, Thank you for having a good memory From korea couple If you want to see sun set view and meet nice staff, Just come over to here

Booked during holiday stay, Enjoy the evening. Nice environment, good service, worth the sunset moment. Welcome drink deserve a point.
Eris L — Google review
Good view and good music Food and service is absolute trash, takes 30min from order to getting the food, some of our orders just stay at the kitchen counter and the waiters refuse to send it to our table. Food is also insanely mediocre, most satay out there in sabah is better than what you get for the overpricing, and its absolute bs cuz u need to order 200 ringgit per person at minimum with the limited mediocre food choice here. Think twice and thrice before coming here
Alex C — Google review
My friends and I had an amazing evening at the Sunset Bar on our last day of the trip. We took the package inclusive of 1 cocktail and 1 food item per person, with unlimited house wine. With this package, you can take the high chair seat. I recommend the skewers and seafood platter! The skewers have a variety of lamb, beef, chicken, prawn and well grilled. The seafood platter goes well with the sauces provided (mayo, sour cream, hummus) and the portion is very generous. The drinks are not too strong and delicious. If you come before 6pm you can catch the beautiful sunset. It was one of the best sunsets I've seen during my trip here so it's worth a visit.

Nestled at the KK Waterfront, The Loft is a vibrant two-story bar that perfectly blends relaxation and entertainment. With its chic rooftop setting, guests can soak in breathtaking views of the sky and sea while enjoying a diverse selection of drinks, including classic cocktails and unique Loftail creations. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the large screen behind the bar showcasing European football matches, while those looking for some friendly competition can challenge friends to a game of pool on the upper floor.
We had a couple of beers here .( Guinness and Heineken) Nice place to sit by the harbor and look at the fishing boats -and the other tourists
Simon T — Google review
Great views over the waterfront. Friendly staff and quick service. Good drinks selection and a happy hour. However, the beer did not taste good. Tasted like they need to clean the lines more often, but we may have gotten unlucky. Would still recommend for a drink. We didn't eat but the food looked and smelled good. Up there with the best views in Kota Kinabalu, especially for sunset.
Oscar K — Google review
Decent Guiness on draft, wine by the glass is only House Red (dry), which is a bit odd, i think its because they dont have the turnover for white wine. Sat at the waterfront which is no Monaco! Its stinks a bit from the fishing vessels harboured (not the venues concern or doing of course ). Worth popping down for a Guinnes, though, to escape the hotel etc.
TRAVEL M — Google review
I was here on 24th December 2021 night. We ordered our beverages and meals. There were less crowd in the restaurant but waited more than 40 minutes. Feeling awkward we asked the staff and then only she told us that their kitchen is close. They serve only beverages. Food are order from next restaurant. So we cancelled our meals and just had our beverages. No complaint. We still enjoy the view, our drinks and the staff, she is friendly.
Kayattiri A — Google review
The Loft is just another of those waterfront watering holes apparently competing with all of the others along approximately 100 metres of prime water frontage. Their secret weapon appears to be their association with Toscani's restaurant a few doors down. Order a happy hour beer at The Loft for RM 25 & order a meal which is then prepared by Toscani's kitchen. You actually pay separately for the beer & meal. The meal I had was Garlic bread plus fish & chips & the fish was as fresh as could be. The tartare sauce was delicious as were the chips. The garlic bread came with a small dish of olive oil with a touch of balsamic vinegar added which just made it perfect for my tired old soul. The place was not as busy as its neighbours but that may have been due to a group near me who were smoking cigars, the smell of which permeated the surrounding area. Fortunately I did not allow this to detract from a pleasant experience. As the waterfront is prime real estate you would expect to pay a little more but it is well worth the little extra.
Doug R — Google review
Great bar! The staff were extremely friendly and even took time to talk to me and ask about my travels! The live music was really awesome and the musicians were also friendly!

Nestled beneath a backpacker lodge, Biru Biru Cafe & Bar is an unmissable gem in Kota Kinabalu, thanks to its vibrant blue walls that perfectly reflect its name. This charming spot radiates nostalgic backpacker vibes, making it a cozy retreat for travelers seeking comfort and character. With a diverse menu featuring everything from the beloved Biru-Biru to the lively Mamacita, there's no shortage of delightful options to explore throughout the day.
We tried several cocktails and all of them were very good! The happy hour time slot is wide and allows you tasting many different cocktails at a good price. Some games are available to enjoy the drink while playing (cards, dices..), and the good vibes atmosphere is the cherry on the cake. We didn’t try the food but seemed very tasty as well.

All time favorite will be the beef burger, perfectly cooked juicy patty with loads of caramelized onions on it. I think thats the best on the menu. Love the Cocktails as well, really good offer during happy hour. Nice chill environment, love the art and decoration all over. Staff were also tentative and friendly.

Happy Hour Buy1 free1 cocktail 12pm to 9pm. Cozy place, nice breezy ambiance. Great place to chill.
Jeff L — Google review
Biru-Biru Cafe & Bar offers a cozy atmosphere with a somewhat limited menu. While the menu lacks variety, the taste of the dishes is satisfactory. The pricing falls into the medium range, making it decent for the quality offered. The environment is inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating, creating a comfortable ambiance. The limited seating, however, might pose a challenge during peak hours. The staff at Biru-Biru are commendable, being both nice and well-versed in the menu. Accessibility is a plus, as the establishment is wheelchair-friendly. Located next to Bandaran Kota Kinabalu, it provides convenience but parking can be a hassle due to the challenge in finding coupon spaces. The mention of happy hour from 12pm to 9pm daily is a notable highlight, making it an attractive spot for those looking for affordable drinks. Additionally, the occasional live band performances add to the overall experience. Despite the minor drawbacks, the positive aspects outweigh them, making Biru-Biru Cafe & Bar a place worth revisiting.

Beautiful cafe & bar, with live band at the night. I enjoyed the waffle.
J — Google review
Dropped by the place in a hot Monday afternoon, it’s not busy. Quite some walk from the city, but it’s alright. Ordered their nasi lemak and request for extra chili (they are kind to give extra) as it’s not really spicy hot. Taste and smell of the rice is fragrant with coconut milk and fried chicken are tender and crispy. Current they have promotion on their cocktail during off peak hours, best deal any 2 for MayR35 and it’s actually not bad. Recommend to get their drinks.
HC L — Google review
Pretty place, comfy environment, good live band and affordable cocktails. Fantastic place to chill out with friends. Only downside, food menu was limited and further to that, few were unavailable during my visit. If you are looking for snacks or bar food, smoked duck bao and the deep fried calamari were good.

SOULed OUT Kota Kinabalu has quickly become a beloved destination for both locals and visitors seeking a vibrant atmosphere to unwind and enjoy delectable cuisine. Nestled in the bustling Imago Shopping Mall, this stylish gastrobar boasts an urban design by renowned architect Ed Poole, featuring eye-catching elements like a diamond-shaped bar and colorful outdoor seating.
This was my second time at SOULed OUT, and it didn’t disappoint! The food was great, as always—flavorful and satisfying. The live band added a fantastic touch to the atmosphere, creating a lively vibe without being overwhelming. The ambiance is always on point, making it a perfect place to enjoy good food and relax. Definitely a place I’d recommend for a fun night out!

It was nice to enjoy birthday celebration in small family group together here at evening when there's live band can sing wishing happy birthday. Staff help keep the cake in their kitchen first while we enjoy dinner and help prepare the cake also provide small plates for the cut slice cake. All food and beverages ordered was delicious and enjoyable. The pizza with salmon was nice too. Very wide selection of food from Western to Asian cuisine. Enjoyed much the detox drink. You can also actually order and get plain mineral water, even though it is not written included in the menu section. Sometimes you can hear the sound of aeroplane perhaps landing or departure due to the location is close to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Staffs are very attentive and clear up the empty plates very quickly.

This restaurant is a great spot conveniently located in a mall. They offer a wide selection of food and beverages, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The restaurant’s layout is well-designed, with tables spaced far enough apart to provide a comfortable and private dining experience. We’ll definitely visit again during our next stopover in KK!

I had the signature, Butter chicken with nannn & Satay mix. Both were v good. Thank u, i enjoyed my meal🙏👍. Lovely place. Will b back. ** i returned to taste the Summertime Salad & Malabar Red Snapper Fish. The Summertime Salad is a must eat. As for the Malabar red snapper, the fish is fresh, unfortunately, i did not enjoy it as much becos the sauce which had a dash of coconut cream, i found overpowered the taste of fresh fish. My opinion. I would give the Malabar fish 4* n less. I felt such a waste of good seafood🙏. But on the whole, the 3 other dishes i ate, was excellent. Thank you🙏😊

Huge thanks to both of them for making our visit so memorable. Can’t wait to come back!

OK, nothing special. Great views for sunset although reasonably expensive. They had run out of a few things on the menu. Staff were a little pushy at getting us to sit down and have a drink and not overly friendly when serving.

sooo. . i was here as a guest dj... good environment, awesome sunset view, staff were friendly to me... crowd seems to mind their own business, beer price is ok... food? no time to check since there's too much beer 🤣.... sound system can be better.... the only bad experience for me is that a customer spilled a beer on my controller... damn that guy...

Chilli Vanilla, located on Jalan Haji Saman, is a bustling destination offering Eastern European cuisine alongside international dishes like Moroccan-Inspired Lamb Stew and Chilli Chocolate Braised Beef. The bistro in Pusat Bandar Kota Kinabalu is known for its Hungarian classics such as Hungarian Goulash and Chicken Roulade. Additionally, the restaurant offers Paneer Chilli Gravy, Cheese Masala Dosa, and Chole Bahture.
Really want to thank you to the tonight service crews and chefs. Food was really yummy and my girlfriend really loves the mash potatoes, it was superb creamy and soft. The foods are really home cooked style but i really like it. The foods here are worth the price. Portion was big and huge too. Thank you for making our anniversary & Christmas dinner pleasant and wonderful. And thank you for making our tummy big and filled too 🫂 She's giving 9/10 for everything. And i am giving 11/10. HEAVENLY. Thats one word that explains my dish for tonight. Never have I ever tasted chicken corden bleu that has suuper tender chicken, not almost burnt on the outside, very flavourful and very runny cheese and believe me when I say I tasted countless chicken corden bleus. Thank you thank you thank you for letting my taste buds dance. Definitely recommended! Staff were very friendly and please give compliments to the chef. The atmosphere is very homie and cozy.

Beef goulash is excellent albeit localized. Only complain is not enough. The wrap is so so. The malaysian Sibu beer is not good. Chef is from Hungary. Will come again

Definitely 5 stars!! The service was great!! The food was fantastic with excellent flavors. The aroma when I was walking by got me to come and look at the menu. Especially because it's the only Hungarian restaurant in Malaysia. Cauliflower soup is delicious, Hungarian beef goulash....yummy. it also comes with mash potatoes, and I also started with hummus and veggies. Skander, my server, was great and really friendly, good customer. I would definitely recommend this place it was really good and delicious. Thank you!

Ordered Hungarian Chicken Special which had Grilled Chicken Breast topped with melted cheese and mushroom. With boiled potatoes. Chicken was juicy and well seasoned, potatoes was soft and well seasoned too. It was a gluten free meal. Atmosphere wise, it was noisy as its beside roadside. No AC was on but it had fan and it was airy enough. Chef seems like is from Hungary. Pretty authentic meal.

Restaurant
Upperstar Cafe & Bar Segama, located in Segama Complex, Kota Kinabalu, is a popular spot for chilling out with friends and family. The pub-like cafe offers a good selection of beers and cocktails along with Western and Malayan cuisine. It's known for being a great place to celebrate occasions and watch football matches. The spacious two-story cafe has plenty of seating and a nice atmosphere with attractive decorations.
The atmosphere is quite nice , I love the decoration. And also the food is very nice! I have a crispy chicken burger and chicken wings!!! The wings are super yummy! But the garlic bread is just okay.. overall is nice to have dinner ;)

Tried this place as I've never seen it in west Malaysia. The food quality was definitely on the lower side. Super basic menu, staff was also not as friendly as other western restaurants. Nothing much to expect.
Mei H — Google review
Nice food. Carbonara taste good but the grill fish needs to have some improvement. Prefer tartar sauce instead of the mayo. I didn't dip in the sauce but requested a slice of lemon to squeeze it into the fish fillet. Just to reduce the muddy taste of dory. Fries are tasty and fresh. However the mashed potatoes were cold, I would prefer it come hot/warm.

Second time coming to this place, first time was 3 years ago and vaguly remembered it was good. Came on saturday night at 7, not too many people. Decided to give their fish fillet burger a try. Burger was hot and fillet is crispy. But the fries is looking quite sad. On top of that, the fish fillet is very fishy smell. I kinda preferred the burger to top off with tartar instead of just mayo because the fish smell. Over fair experience. Btw, ambient is good and upbeat music.

What can I say. This is is nolstagic for me. I used to come here with friends when I worked in KK more than a decade ago. They served nice food then. Since I am back in KK for holidays, why not come here for a meal. But what a disappointment. The fish and chips I ordered is mushy. Some seems not cooked.

Restaurant
Upperstar Cafe & Bar Damai offers a charming retro vibe, reminiscent of classic Americana with its decor featuring iconic stars from the past. The atmosphere strikes a balance between lively and intimate, making it an ideal spot for gatherings with friends. While the music occasionally requires some manual adjustments due to technical quirks, it adds to the nostalgic feel of the place. Guests can enjoy generous portions at reasonable prices, particularly favoring their Western dishes over local options.
Food was superB, a lot of place to sit, nice and warm great by staff, food 10/10 and also 5/10 you guys much try first by your self, price as below rm19-rm150
Shayful R — Google review
Love the ambiance. They always put up really nice festive decoration. When we go there we always sit outside. The food was good. We had the Chicken Chop and Crispy Chicken Burger. Love the Chicken Chop. It was served hot, and chicken was cooked perfectly. The Chicken Burger was good as well. Crispy on the outside and juicy chicken fillet in the inside. Some things they can improve on is the timing of serving the food. There was a 15 minutes gap between our food. I was almost finished with my food, when the Chicken Burger was served. Also another improvement needed to be done is customer service. Some of the servers are really friendly and attentive, and some of them are not attentive and lack the communication skills. We will still go to Upperstar for the food. I would say the food here is good value for money. Hopefully they will improve on other areas and be better in the future.

Went there on 15/4/25 around 10 PM and ordered the baked chicken pasta, French fries, baked mushroom soup, and chicken burger. Kudos to the chef on duty that night — you guys did an amazing job with my food! I loved every bite of it! The baked chicken pasta was loaded with cheese on top — definitely worth the drive to the Damai branch! The fries were perfectly fried with just the right amount of salt, and the pastry on top of the baked mushroom soup was beautifully baked and generously portioned. Huge shoutout to the kitchen crew for the generous serving of fries — bless you guys! No comments on the chicken burger, but I’m pretty sure it’s just as bomb as everything else! You guys really made my night. Thank you for preparing such a hearty, comforting meal. You all deserve a raise! Not to forget the service crew — super alert and quick on their feet. So far, Upperstar Damai is the best branch to go to!

Ordered and ate here, fries was soggy, and pale, I asked for chilli sauce.. surprisingly they run out of it, ordered ice blended mocha but taste was horrible, did ask for amendment but still bad taste, and staff making jokes and cursing about 'poo/shit' near to me while I'm dining... Toilet is filthy and the toilet door knobs is horrifying, they really drop in service and quality.
Avril — Google review
A decent spot for cheap eats, a great place for friends and family gatherings. The menu offers a variety of local and Western dishes at reasonable prices. However outdoor seating can be uncomfortably hot, and the indoor air conditioning has an odd smell, suggesting some improvements would have been needed.

Upper Star Restaurant at Damai Plaza, Luyang, Kota Kinabalu has gained quite a reputation for itself, and rightfully so. This well-loved establishment not only offers delectable western-style meals, but also tantalizing Asian cuisine. One thing that truly sets this restaurant apart is their exceptional pizza, which manages to be both thin and crunchy, resulting in a taste sensation that is simply unrivaled. Personally, I find myself constantly craving their spaghetti bolognese, as it is both delightful and satisfying. When it comes to beverages, Upper Star Restaurant leaves you spoilt for choice. Their menu boasts an extensive array of options, ensuring that every customer's preferences are catered to. It is worth noting that while they used to serve alcoholic drinks, such as the classic Margarita, but no longer offer them. This is a bar by the poolside of Grandis Hotel with a pretty decent view of the sunset. It's a nice place to chill with a beer while you take a dip, or enjoy the sunset. Drinks are reasonably priced (I got 2 cans of carlsberg for RM35 - promotion price).

Mocktails were okay, food is so so but the service is very helpful and warm. Wish they can play some music most of the time to help the atmosphere. The sunset view is perfect here.

Even if you are not staying here as I booked a hostel, this place is worth a visit for sunset views. You just need to purchase a drink and you can enjoy at the balcony. No smoking allowed which is a bit of a bummer and they probably could do with a smoking area honestly to attract people. The clientele seems to be the middle age to elderly hotel guests which is fine but the views are stunning. Backpackers: this is worth a visit. As a flash-packer I totally enjoyed it. Service staff were slow though .

One of the best place to enjoy the sunset in KK. The price of the food quite on the higher side but still reasonable. It is a really nice place to chill while enjoying the sunset and the view of KK. If you live in Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu, then you should visit this cozy bar. The vibe is super cozy and is good for either drinking with friends or a solo drink. Also, a shout-out to the staff, Raz, Alvin, Kelly, and the other staff that work there! They're super friendly, always up for a chat, and they make good cocktails/serve customers with passion. For the drinks, they have a fine selection, with most cocktails available. On the other hand, they have some good liquor selections (for example, Glengoyne 21 at a relatively cheap price). Definitely a must-visit for a relaxed evening.

Spent a bit of time here during our stay at the Hyatt Centric. As an added bonus, we arrived minutes before Happy Hour started (5 to 8pm), so we enjoyed BOGO on some of the mocktails and they were all amazing. Staff were knowledgeable of key local ingredients used on their drinks, spoke fluent conversational English and friendly service. Satay chicken was a good light meal choice to go with our beverage. Unfortunately it's not the right spot for the sunset view but incredible view of the waters nonetheless. This place is highly recommended even if you are not a guest at the hotel.

Mosaic is a charming cafe in Kota Kinabalu known for its delectable layer crepe cakes, with unique flavors like Cempedak, Red Bean Sauce, and Plum. The environment is as delightful as the food, offering a dazzling experience. Indulge in their mushroom soup served in a bread bowl before savoring Wagyu burgers and salmon pizzas. This cozy spot also offers Lavazza coffee and daily sandwich specials like roast beef and tuna.
This is actually our regular stop for dessert especially their wonderfully taste gelatos. Either during our stay as guests at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu or just passing by to have hangout moments anytime during their opening hours, Mosaic Hyatt Regency offers a relaxing place to have desserts as well as other standard hotel menus (cooked by Tanjung Ria Kitchen chefs). Their specialized gelatos are tasty from RM 10 per scoop/cup. For this moment, brought family for our casual moments after dinner. Washroom/toilet is okay too, squeaky clean and water is not a problem. Look forward to visit here again anytime I'm in Kota Kinabalu.

This café gave us a welcome treat during our first night in Kota Kinabalu. We tried their ice cream and pastries for dessert after a walk at the waterfront. All of the staff were nice and very accommodating even if it was apparent that we weren’t guests at the Hyatt Hotel. The ice cream flavors they were offering were diverse and you can have a taste before putting in your order. All of them were quite good and it was hard to decide which one to get. In the end, I had to put my money on the Hawaiian coconut flavor cause it was the most exotic one for me out of all the options (it was also black in color!). The pastry was also delicious and was even given at 50% as it was near closing time when we dropped by.

The food here was OK but very expensive for a cafe, guess it's the hotel attachment. Took 25 mins to get a chicken curry offered as a special. It was OK when it arrived. My wife had a spinach tart supposedly warmed but cold in the centre. We both had smoothies, nice and thick but very little fruit taste!
Chris H — Google review
Terrible service by your staff, we only wanted some ice cream but Norizwan ignored us and served two customers who arrived after us which also wanted ice cream. We were left waiting for over 10 minutes without acknowledgment. To make matters worse, a female staff member made a mocking comment about us “only affording the RM5 one,” which was unprofessional. This experience was unacceptable, their body language was disrespectful and I hope action will be taken to prevent this from happening to other customers.

Other than the spectacular service and views, the drinks are below average. I was excited to try the local-infused cocktails but they were deeply disappointing. Prices steeply increased from recent menu photos. No more cocktail offers as well. Smoking was allowed at the terrace area, this should not happen. Filled with tourists taking photos who are gone right after sunset. Not sure if I’d come back - definitely not for the cocktails.

Cocktails are way too sweet but the wine and beers were nice. The fried chicken wings are just ok. They had a live singer on Saturday night with a beautiful voice (1 Oct, 2022). She really made the whole experience amazing The prices are reasonable given the place/rooftop!

Very good spot to enjoy the sunset with a good cocktail! Cocktails very good, but I would not have dinner here looking at the food the other customer took around me. Unless you only search for something to accompany your drink (tortilla chips, french fries..). Come early or book in advance if you want to grab a table on the first row, next to the glass balcony! Even on weekdays.

Situated on the top floor of Le Meridien Hotel, Rofftop @ Le Meridien overlooks the KK waterfront. You can kick back, relax and enjoy spectacular views looking out over the harbour and the ocean beyond towards Gaya and Manukan islands. Sunsets are simply spectacular and this is the best time to visit. There is a wide selection of cocktails and beers on offer as well as a food menu. There’s table service from the attentive wait staff. Drinks are reasonably priced and the cocktails are great. There’s a couple of small function rooms that are available for hire. However they were having some lunch promotions which looked rather reasonable. Environment- very well designed with a good ambience. You can enjoy the sea view by the balcony. Music was just nice - not too loud. Service- service was good. Staffs were attentive and friendly. To get there might be a little trickier as upon entering the mall from the main entrance, unless you turn left, you probably will miss the banner that leads you to the cafe. If you’ve taken the lift to first floor, you probably will get a little lost as well (you need to turn right and walk all the way!) This is probably something that the mall if not the cafe can improve on- a clear store directory would be really helpful.

Staffs are super duper friendly and I'd give them 5⭐s for service... Good job👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼..breath taking view of the harbour and surrounding islands... The food is good but a bit on the expensive side but the beers are reasonably priced and its way much cheaper during happy hours.

Hard Rock was a great place to hang out from its inception till April 2017 under the GM Floyd. After he left till last month the place deteriorated so badly that regulars looked for other watering holes including myself. Then last month a little birdie told me new management. So took a risk and dropped by for a drink. Under the new GM place is improving for the better. The kitchen has improved tremendously. Live bands are back from 1st of August as well as some of the old staff. I lament that Budwiser is still not in stock. The Clarion call to all old regulars is COME BACK it going to be as good as it was. To new visitors drop by and experiance Hard Rock Kota Kinabalu. This is "HARD ROCK".

Great atmosphere, an inviting place to relax and enjoy. The service is fabulous!! The staff who are not only friendly but genuinely welcoming. The bartenders are especially impressive, always keen about sharing their knowledge and taking the time to explain each cocktail in detail

We did not have any food, but a nice cocktail bar hidden away. Stones throw from Chaya Hotel and perfect for a drink before heading back there. Staff knowledgeable on drinks and will customise you a cocktail if you ask. Live music on a Sunday night, unfortunately we missed this had a flight to catch.

Absolutely loved this bar! One of my best experiences in Kota Kinabalu. Shame I couldn't be around for one of the packed concerts but I still loved this place. Love the aesthetic, mood and...um...scents. 😂 Really courtesy, cool staff! Shame I forgot to get anyone's name. Still a relaxing, memorable hang. Exactly what I needed; to unwind with a good drink and awesome staff during an otherwise lame trip to KK. Thank you again peeps/ladies! 😎

Loved this establishment. Great drinks. Even greater music. And the feeling of drinking with friends is amazing too. Limestone drink was amazing: delicious - and a spectacular thing to look at too. Butter beer is such a delight to taste. Fries deserve an honourable mention too. So moreish! And the service: friendly, personable. Highly recommended. Near to Tg Aru!

Pros: Ambience is on point. My friend and I came around 7pm so it wasn’t too busy yet. Around 9pm onwards the crowd starts coming in. Staff is friendly and could recommend drinks based on what flavor profile you like. The drinks are amazing. All I can say is you’re drinking art. They’re both beautiful to look at and tasty. My friend and I each had 3 drinks each. Hands down one of the best drinks I’ve tasted so far. Cons: Parking here is a challenge. And the price of the cocktails are comparable to KL high end bars (around RM40 ++ onwards per drink). Overall, I still think it’s worth the price point, and I really enjoyed my time here. My wallet doesn’t allow me to come often but I think it’s a perfect spot for dates.

This place is absolutely amazing. We're staying in Kota Kinabalu for a few days, travelled here from Melbourne. Luckily came across this speak easy style bar in KK and it was incredible. The cocktails are easily the best I've ever had and the staff was absolutely lovely. Michelle was great and I can't recommend the Jungle Bird enough! We loved it so much we're planning on heading back tomorrow night!

Market
The Api Api Night Food Market at Gaya Street in Kota Kinabalu is a vibrant weekly market that showcases the local culture and cuisine. Visitors can indulge in a variety of Malay dishes such as dumplings, handmade curry, Korean chicken, and more. The market also offers an array of drinks, fruits, and handicrafts made by locals.
Stumbled upon this stall at the pasar malam, and they sell avocado milk drinks. This cup, priced at RM16, might seem a bit pricey at first, but it’s absolutely worth every cent! The aroma of the avocado is incredibly rich, and when combined with the milk, it creates a smooth and refreshing taste. The texture is creamy yet light, with just the right level of sweetness that doesn’t feel overwhelming. Every sip is packed with the natural flavor of avocado, making it feel like you’re drinking pure health in a cup. This kind of drink is rare at pasar malam, making it a standout find. The portion size is very generous, and the large cup really surprised me. For RM16, the quality and quantity are completely justifiable. The packaging is also fun and unique, featuring the quirky “Cool Mama” design, which adds an extra charm to the overall experience. If you happen to visit this night market, don’t miss out on this stall’s avocado milk drink! From the flavor to the portion and quality, it’s highly recommended. This is a drink that leaves a lasting impression, and I’ll definitely come back for more next time!

Decent night market. Has a lot of food choices to choose from. Very friendly locals. Would recommend. Take note they are only open on Fridays and sometimes they open a bit late depending on the weather conditions.

Lucky to be here on a Saturday night and try some interesting food! The taste was good — not the best, but definitely worth a try for the experience. Can’t really say it’s cheap for fellow Southeast Asians since it’s a pretty touristy spot.
Stephanie A — Google review
This is a nice place to grab food or experience the culture of Malaysia. The food is good, and the people are nice. This is a very crowded and popular market, and be prepared to eat some very spicy foods. Also, bring a decent amount of money to try things, but stuff is relatively cheap. ($8 for a whole plate of chicken and rice, with broccoli.)
Reid V — Google review
It is near to Airport KK. Choices of food you can get at the night market. It opens from Friday to Saturday only. It is advisable for people to take grab because the place is crowded and hard to find parking. The night market is different from pasar malam in semenanjung. They got better option to find food. However, not all food were delicious. i think 90% of my purchase taste so so. I really like the vibes with busking all along the night market and the people who came to lepak lepak there. Plus, the price is mahal sikit maybe due to one of tourism spot. Hope that majlis perbandaran can provide tong sampah(s) as there are many people coming there eating while strolling at night market.
Amirah I — Google review
Yummy food selection here! Lots to choose from, I bought some velvet cakes, fried chicken, and rice. And also bought a good selection of fruits. Great atmosphere in the market as well as very friendly vendors. Love this market. I'm going back tonight for dinner.
Expeditionsolo — Google review
A very lively place with many food stalls. Definitely worth exploring and trying the local food. There are no seating so many people just sit at the open area to enjoy their food. The rubbish bin nearby was overflowing so more bins need yo be provided or the bins cleared quickly.
Google L — Google review
On the flight from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu (KK) we sat with a very kind gentleman who was winging his way to KK to visit his girlfriend. He was a wealth of information about Singapore, and Borneo; when he found out where we were staying (and that we weren’t bolting for the national park but staying in KK) he brightened up and said: “Oh, you’re right beside the markets on Gaya Street. They’re fantastic. You have to take in the night market on Friday and Saturday. The food is great and it’s a lot of fun.” Since we love night markets we were excited to learn that we were so close to KK’s version, and it didn’t disappoint. We arrived on a Saturday so were able to take in the night market our first night in KK. What a treat! Gaya Street is lined with food vendors offering all manner of Malaysian foods, from standard savouries like Satay and Nasi Lemak to a range of desserts and cold drinks. And unlike so many other markets of this kind that we’ve been to in North America, here the vendors don’t charge over-the-top prices for small portions of too-oftentimes dubiously prepared foods. No, no, my friend. Here the portions are generous, and the prices fair. For example, on our first, “let’s test the waters” visit we spent all of RM 10 (CDN $6) for six satay sticks, a huge order of Har Mee, and a delicious iced mango drink. On our final night (the following weekend) we splurged and ate ourselves insensible, all for RM 65 (CDN $19.60 - that’s the price we paid for one very dubious Strawberry Sundae Waffle at Toronto’s CNE last year!). But the best part of the Api Api Night Market isn’t the great food; it’s the great vibe. This is a big family night out, and the street is thronged with all ages from the very young (and very rambunctious) to the very old - all strolling along taking it all in. If you go, do not miss out on ordering your favourite food then sitting down with hundreds of people who use a side street adjacent to Gaya Street as an ad hoc picnic zone. It’s just awesome! Oh, and take time to listen to the talented buskers that give the market an extra special vibe. And please, gift generously, especially if you take video. It’s how these folks make a living. One note: weirdly, there are no garbage bins anywhere along the street, so be prepared to schlep your leftover food and drink containers in the plastic bags they came in until you either find a bin, or ask one of the vendors if they’d dispose of your garbage for you (no one we asked said no). If you’re staying in KK on a Friday or Saturday night, you really owe it to yourself to get out to this night market - it’s the best time!

The Karaoke bar M Cubed Bar is a local favourite, with friendly people and cheap beers. It's got an updated sound system and a good selection of karaoke songs. The regulars all seem to know each other, and the girls who frequent the bar are usually up for a bit of darts or some friendly competition in karaoke!
Updated jan2020: They still accept CASH TERM only. So prepare enough cash if you planned to spend the night here. Open from 5.30PM-Late night. I used to work here before but now it has become my regular hangout place as we formed our dart playing girls team. Cheap beers, nice sound system, updated Karaoke songs, and friendly people❤️ Everyone esp KK people, come and support our local bar!😚😘

Restaurant
Cock and Bull Bistro, located in the Waterfront area of KK, received the prestigious Best Entertainment Spot Award in Sabah state for two consecutive years: 2005 and 2007. Known for its warm hospitality, this British-style pub is a popular choice for those seeking relaxation. Guests can enjoy live music performed by the talented in-house band throughout the week, except on Sundays. The bar offers a wide selection of alcoholic beverages including draught beers and wine.
If you fancy an old bar, with all the liquor displayed on top of the bar wood shelves, an old fashioned furniture that will surely reminds you like that old good time then his is your place! Don't missed the sunset 🌇 cause the vies was spectacular here! Happy Hour all night long on Monday and everyday happy hour from 3PM-9PM. I believed they have the most CHEAPEST PRICE of beer among all the bars in Waterfront. Ladies Night on Wed, FREE 2 cocktails from the bar for the lovely ladies in the house. Live band starts at 930PM everyday. An energetic and entertaining band that can sing various songs from different language. Not forgetting the staff was very friendly and helpful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

less crowded than other pubs. At first I choose the place cuz they sell house wine. after seat, they said they don't have it(might be sold out) so I ordered a beer instead(the reason why I gave them 3 stars). anyway the scene was great.

This bar is located on the Waterfront (2nd shop from the left if you are facing the sea). Nice bright red wall painting of a cock and bull. Can't miss it. Waiters (guys and girls) we always available and gave us fast service, Sono complaints there. We could discuss with them and improvise our menu. On the view, can't say much for it wld be the same anywhere along this beach And along the the Waterfront. BUT the seating layout here doesn't allow THOSe tourist to stand at the railing to film the entire sunset . You have to get a table and once u have a table at the railing they can't block you. Which is great and not like other bars in this area. Now, food....well it was ok for the price but not great, with small issues like the lamb could be charred a bit more or the fried rice needs some body to it. Generally the menu mislead us, the picture doesn't say the thousand words. The nachos looked small but was a huge serving. The chicken burger had a closeup photos so looked huge but was only medium sized. We order to go the fried rice and they packed it nicely and neatly. Drinks. I had my beer. Felt it was a bit flat. But with beer it gets better the more you drink it. It was ladies night so free drinks for the ladies which was vodka with orange punch which was a bit meh. Overall I had a good time

The employees were basically treating it like their own party. They were playing random songs they wanted to hear and skipping to the next in the middle of a song. The bartender was smoking at the bar inside. We asked to play pool, and after we asked some employees took the table so we couldn’t play. We left after 1 drink because the employees seemed they really wanted the place to just hang out for themselves and we were an inconvenience.

Came for a gin and tonic and left in a bad mood. The gin & tonic had no gin and was served in a very small glass. Our waiter drank more beers than he made eye contact with us. We had one gin and tonic and it took us 45 minutes to get the check and leave because the waiters were having a party inside by themselves. Would not recommend this place to anyone!

I went to this restaurant with my family. The ambience here are very cozy and comfortable. All the foods were served so fast less than 15 min.. Regarding the food wise, mushroom soup was so nice & riched with spice aroma. Second, the nasi goreng tuhau not my favorite, but my wife love it so much as she is a local dusun.. For my main course, it was sabah spicy seafood spaghetti.. I was so disappointed for this dish as the spaghetti was over cooked, the mussels were just so dry & tasteless.. Last but not least, our dessert was burning chocolate brownie.. My mood was just brought up from hell to heaven.. Unimaginable delicious.. The tender brownie cake top with a vanilla ice cream and soaked in the middle of valcanous dark chocolate.. The dessert really made my day...

Sully's Bar is a great place to enjoy some peaceful and soothing jazz music while sipping on some refreshing drinks. The venue usually attracts people in the age group of thirty plus, who appreciate the tranquility and relaxed atmosphere it provides. The live band usually puts on great performances that keep the crowds entertained while they sip their drinks. However, this bar can be quite expensive compared to others in the city centre - but it offers a wide range of drinks that are sure to satisfy any thirst.
Its a proper pub with great music and cozy atmosphere , very friendly people there, the rustic look ads to the vibe of the place, on Wednesday Friday and Saturday it hostess a very good live band , for sports enthusiast live telecast are played there, drink wise , only original and the best are available, and with a simple yet satisfying food menu,

Decided to hop in this bar after going through the Google review recommendation. There was a 3 piece local band performing, they were belting mainly sentimental and easy-going oldies songs such as Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel. If you are daring, the band members gladly welcome you up the stage to join them with the singing. I would specially like to complement the lady host of the bar, she was specially friendly as she took the effort to engage conversation with every customers, she was so kind to even offer us a ride back to our hotel after the bar closes. Another decent and cozy bar in Kota Kinabalu I have visited.

Found a hidden gem at KK time square, so nicely decorated. I am very impressed with their cocktail list, some very unique drinks available and I ordered a French connection. It’s has brandy, ameratto and dry orange. It’s so nice to drink. I also love the Music they play, nice jazzy soft music makes conversation easy to converse. We didn’t have to shout at each other. Very well lid and the waiters are very sweet. Will come back again.

This restaurant serves a curated selection of tapas and delectable Western dishes. While the menu may not be extensive, each dish is meticulously prepared and a true delight for the palate. We enjoyed the salmon salad, onion soup, and Australian Angus beef – all expertly crafted by the chef. The restaurant also caters to larger groups, requiring advance reservations. We enjoyed the evening and our server, Martha is particular attentive serving us.

Second time here, and Im still satisfied with the food. I find the menu kinda interesting, espy the tapas. There are also many types of alcohol, wines and unique cocktails. The pasta was cooked well and pleasantly spiced. Chicken meat amount was more than unexpected and the potato soup was really good- full of flavour. The waiters were more attentive here than most restaurants in KK. They also had rhe courtesy to ask how the food is. The food and drinks were served fairly quickly. The bar and restaurant are kinda aesthetic too. It makes you feel elegant and want to have deep conversations haha. It's a nice place for couples and families.

Good food and atmosphere. When I visited, around 8pm on a weekday night, I was the only diner. Service could’ve been more attentive despite this. Staff were very friendly and nice. Food was good; duck pasta could’ve used a larger serving of duck for the price. Pappardelle noodles were fantastic in the dish. Pretty sure it’s the same kitchen as Cafe 17, which also puts out a nice meal. Would revisit again.
