Gyeongju in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Gyeongju, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Gyeongju is often called a “museum without walls” thanks to its dense concentration of ancient temples, tombs and palace sites from the Silla Kingdom, which ruled much of the Korean Peninsula for nearly a thousand years. You can explore UNESCO-listed Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, as well as large grassy burial mounds in Daereungwon Tomb Complex and the scenic Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. The city’s compact size makes it easy to combine historical sightseeing with visits to Gyeongju National Museum, traditional markets and nearby low mountains and parks.
With favorites like Daereungwon Tomb Complex, , and Bichkkuli, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Oncheonjib and Bichkkuli so you can get the best taste of Gyeongju while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Cheomseongdae Observatory is a cylindrical structure made of 362 stones, symbolizing the solar year. It is located in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom in Korea. This city was once a bustling cultural and commercial hub with significant archaeological remains. The observatory is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is just one of many historical treasures found in Gyeongju, including Daereungwon Tomb Complex and Bulguksa Temple.
It was one of the best trip I had. It’s a beautiful place, very historic and reach in Culture. The view is stunning.

One of the must visit spots in Gyeongju You can enjoy seasonal flowers year-round
이재경 — Google review
This park is extensively planned and i thi k most visitors will enjoy at any time of the day. At night, the flower gardens are lit up for visual effects. The fog just adds to the mystics.
Chris K — Google review
It was just a simple land with flowers and observatory tower. There’s no trees around. And it can be pretty hot.
Wen — Google review
Quite crowded during weekend night and the light show. But i recommend visiting here. It's petite but it is beautifully designed. The light show was also very creative and worth watching.

Take your time to visit this place, there are si many things to see and read, beautiful gardens too.

Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, a stunning historical site dating back to around 674 CE, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the opulence of Korea's ancient royal court. Once a royal residence for a prince of the Silla Dynasty, Donggung Palace served as an elegant venue for grand banquets celebrating significant events and welcoming esteemed guests.
Huge palace ground with scenic lake & garden… recommend to visit during evening to catch the sunset & night lighting views of palace.. Fun fact: you will see this palace in samsung TV wallpaper collection We took guided tour which included this palace as well.. if you planning own trip better to check for opening/ closing timings

With the pond, the bridge, the royal tombs and the unesco world heritage sites to explore, give yourself an entire day for the area. The pond is beautifully serene, the entrance fee is laughably cheap and you can meet a squirrel or two under the mogwa trees nearby. Absolutely worth the visit.
Mateja L — Google review
This is a tranquil garden with a pond and pavilions as centrepiece. It's worth checking out by circling the pond and view the extensive landscaping works. The pavilions and walking trails are illuminated after sunset.
Chris K — Google review
Visit only if you have time. It’s just a park with two ‘Gazebos’. In pictures it looks good with illuminations, try going when it dark. The pond has lovely Koi’s. It cost 3000 won to enter, but one can’t enter twice, I was checking if I can come back in night when they turn on the lights. It has plenty of parking space available.
Manpreeth N — Google review
It's a very beautiful place. There are two cats, one is hurt by the tail. The two cats are really cute and calm. I really hope someone kind and generous can take these two for some vet doctor, especially the cat tail hurting one. The ticket sellers and the staffs are indeed very helpful and friendly.
Natacia K — Google review
So surreal! Being able to visit this site in person was one of my highlights of visiting South Korea. Just being in that space watching the sunlight fade and the transition to nighttime at the point where the lights came on, magical!
Belle L — Google review
We went here around May, weather was totally different with Busan. Its warm and sunny here. Need to buy ticket from entrance , no crowded and you can enjoy to see the historical building here. I think evening time will be more beautiful as we came here in the morning.
Jask L — Google review
Although this is basically all reconstructed, it feels authentic and magical. Come here in the evening and enjoy the lights, the little islands, trees, and pavillons reflected in the lake. But don't forget your Mosquito spray, if you plan on sleeping the following night! 😀

Bakery
When in Gyeongju, one must try the famous Hwangnamppang (Hwangnam Bread) from the original store. This delectable treat is a simple yet tasty bread made from flour dough filled with naturally sweetened red bean paste. The bakery is known for its creamy red bean filling and offers the option to purchase in boxes for friends and family back home.
The lines were long but it was worth the 30 minute wait.
Au P — Google review
We walked in, ordered two pieces of bread filled with the red bean paste. It was served warm and was tasty. The place was busy people coming in for their orders. It’s quite a large bakery that produces just one item. It was good, though I get the impression this place runs more on nostalgia than the actual pastry itself.
Bob — Google review
Interesting place, you can see the staff elaborating the product when you enter.
Pedro O — Google review
They seem to be the original, or at least the most authentic, red bean pastry shop around. The place is well-designed, clean, and spacious, with seating available and even a restroom for visitors. Tourists can conveniently buy individual pieces without needing to purchase a whole box. The experience felt genuine and local, not touristy at all. The pastries were high quality, and there was no queue when we visited.
Travis L — Google review
Ask for the fresh / hot variety. Real yummy with beautiful red bean paste. Thank goodness you can buy individually rather than a whole box
Cheng J — Google review
Thought it was something special because there were so many people but found out that it was just red bean cake similar to Chinese moon cake. Not worth the hype.

Fresh, warm and soft. They make one of the best tradicional bean bread in the country. It’s worth to buy it if you around this region.

The Daereungwon Tomb Complex, excavated in 1973, is an ancient burial site of an unknown king and holds over 11,000 artifacts. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Gyeongju Historic Areas and offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Silla era. The city itself is often referred to as a "museum without walls" due to its numerous historical and archaeological treasures, including the Cheomseongdae Observatory and Bulguksa Temple.
Beautiful! Come during spring. Bring your DSLR. It’s gorgeous. Will come back every morning while I’m in Korea. Come earlier since it’s cooler. gyeongju is more humid than Seoul during spring.

What you see is what you get and what you will see are some large, grassy mounds (one containing a small museum). Beautifully maintained, it’s worth an amble but, honestly, thirty minutes is more than enough. Telletubby fans might get more of a kick out of it.

We had a pleasant walk in the complex to visit the tombs and learn more interesting historical stories of Silla Kingdom and the Kings. Admission was free, the vibe was really nice even it was raining heavily when we were there.

Fabulous Worth a journey Theae tombs are very impressive We enjoyed exploring the area and viewing many tombs We enjoyed the tombs at night when they are very beautifully illuminated Most stunning was the museum where you visit a tumb and enjoy the burial chamber and their burial gifts Must see Enjoy
Wim R — Google review
It seems like these burial mounds are everywhere in Gyeongju. What I want know is where are all the big holes where they got the dirt to make these mounds? They are lit up at night. When we visited, there were fireworks. I also wondered how they kept the grass on these mounds so neatly cut.
K J — Google review
I enjoyed the gardens and the walk around the complex, which is free. You can pay a small fee to enter the open tomb, where you can learn about the Silla tombs and horse culture.
Kim S — Google review
Great opportunity to see a tomb from the inside. You need to pay to access this part (ticket booth infront of the entrance). You can see how the tombs are built as well as artefacts that were found in the them. The inside is air-conditioned.

Cheonmachong, also known as the Heavenly Horse Tomb, is a famous Silla burial mound dating back to the 5th or 6th century. It was unearthed in 1973 and is one of the few tombs open to the public. The tomb is believed to belong to a high-class nobleman, although the owner's identity remains unconfirmed.
Great experience to be able to enter the tomb to see what inside actually looks like. A lot of artifacts were displayed inside. Strongly recommend you to visit. We were here around 7+pm still open. And during the day of our visit, admission was free for some reason.

Needs a guide to tell you the story of this place. Good short introductory to Korean history. We were on a group tour, didn't have time to visit the King's tomb.
David — Google review
It was a remarkable experience to explore one of the magnificent royal tombs of the Shila kingdom in Kyongju City. The tombs were filled with a wealth of artifacts and royal treasures, all meticulously preserved for visitors to admire. Although many of the treasures on display were replicas, their splendor was undeniable. The genuine artifacts are housed in the National Museum in Seoul, but this visit was an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.
Patrick M — Google review
Very beautiful park with free every to observe the tombs from the outside.
Nicolas W — Google review
This tomb is just a small part of a pretty big park, but it is also the only tomb you can go inside. Very interesting history and lots of replicas of artifacts that they found in the tomb. I took my time and only spent about 30 minutes inside (and that was after reading all I could about the tomb construction). Definitely worth the price and there are lots of tombs in this area.

Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju is a trendy street known for its ornate hanok-style Korean architecture, atmospheric cafes, and unique shops. The area has been revitalized with a mix of traditional businesses and modern establishments, making it popular among young Korean travelers. Visitors can explore hip shops, teahouses, cafes, and enjoy Instagram-worthy food and live music.
Had a great time here, taking a day trip. This is pretty much what feels like a must-visit if you're in the area. You're surrounded by lots of interesting shops selling unique souvenirs and delicious food. The mix of modern and older architecture creates lots of beautiful photo opportunities. The tomb complexes are also nearby so they're worth a visit while you're here.

A derivative of Seoul's 경리단길, this 황리단길 is , a historical commercial thgroughfare that catered to the Imperial(황) Palace of Geyeongju. like Insadong or Jeonju Hanok village, an awesome place to stroll with rich history of Shilla. Physically, there are great big royal grass dune tombs that make this place even more special.

황리단길(Hwangnidan-gil): Where Tradition Meets Trend in Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil is a charming street in Gyeongju where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly. Gyeongju, long known as the city of kings and ancient tombs from the thousand-year-old Silla Dynasty, surprises visitors with its youthful and vibrant transformation—thanks in large part to this very street. Lined with beautifully preserved hanok-style buildings, the area is filled with cozy cafés, unique boutiques, and stylish eateries, making it especially popular among younger travelers. The elegant traditional architecture harmonizes with contemporary design, turning the entire street into a living gallery. It’s a perfect spot for food lovers, with plenty of dessert cafés and brunch places to explore. And since it’s located near the stone wall path of Daereungwon Tomb Complex, it’s easy to combine cultural sightseeing with a relaxing stroll. Whenever I’m in Gyeongju for a seminar or workshop, I make sure to stop by Hwangnidan-gil for a quiet cup of tea. Visiting in the morning or around sunset offers a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for walking and photography. The street is full of picturesque corners, making it a favorite for capturing memorable shots. If you're planning a trip to Gyeongju, Hwangnidan-gil is an absolute must-visit. It’s a place where the timeless beauty of tradition meets the pulse of modern life—revealing a fresh and unexpected side of this historic city.
Daehoon K — Google review
This is a bustling area packed with shops and tourists. The streets are lined with a mix of souvenir stores, food vendors, convenience stores, boutiques, and the popular Korean cosmetics chain, Olive Young. While there's a great selection of modern Korean street foods and snacks, you'll also notice that many of the food and souvenir shops sell similar, duplicated item
- C — Google review
Nice change from the oppressiveness of Seoul. Eclectic restaurants, cafes, shops, desserts and snacks (fried squid on a stick!). Touristy, with a bit of kitsch, but mostly done right. Hanok-styled architecture is mandated (see Starbucks review) nothing over 2 storeys. Short walk to historical sites. We visited in October so there were no crowds. I imagine the heat and swarms in the Summer may be unpleasant.
K J — Google review
A lot of nice souvenirs and trinkets shops. Nice to walk down alleys of traditional korean shophouses. However, the 10cent cheese shop and street food is very repetitive. Would be nice to have a greater variety of street food. Recommend to bring your international driving license to ride the buggy cars around for rental. Fun and cheap activity.
Nznd — Google review
Hwangnidan-gil is one of the most charming and trendy streets in Gyeongju, blending history with a modern, artsy vibe. Lined with beautifully renovated hanok-style buildings, the street is filled with cozy cafés, boutique shops, and restaurants offering both traditional and fusion cuisine. It’s a great place to stroll, take photos, and enjoy the unique atmosphere that mixes old and new. Many cafés and shops have thoughtfully designed interiors, making them perfect for a relaxing break or a social media-worthy snapshot. The area is especially lively in the evening when the lights add to the ambiance. However, it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, so visiting earlier in the day or on weekdays is recommended for a more relaxed experience. Prices at some cafés and restaurants are slightly higher than average, but the quality and experience often make up for it. Overall, Hwangnidan-gil is a must-visit for those looking to experience a different side of Gyeongju beyond its historical sites. Whether you’re a foodie, a coffee lover, or just someone who enjoys exploring vibrant streets, this area has plenty to offer.
Thắng M — Google review
this covers a huge area and there are lots of food and cafe options here as well as trendy select shops. half a day isn't even enough if you want to fully explore every nook and cranny. most of the cafes are super aesthetic and even in traditional hanok style. honestly i feel this area beats jeonju's hanok village in vibes and quality of food selection. there's korean, thai, viet, japanese, chinese, western food etc here and you'll be spoilt for choice. weekends are particularly crowded so getting a seat at popular restaurants will have a wait time

Bridges
Woljeonggyo Bridge is a reconstructed Silla Dynasty bridge that offers a picturesque sight, especially at night when it is illuminated and reflects on the water. It has historical significance as it was part of the love story of a Buddhist monk and a princess, as well as serving as a gateway connecting royal palaces. The original bridge was built over 1000 years ago but sadly burnt down; however, in 2018, the largest wooden bridge in Korea was reconstructed.
We arrived around 9am. The whole area is just absolutely peaceful and serene. The bridge is absolutely gorgeous. While this version is only a new historical replica, you can appreciate the care and beauty that went into keeping the look and feel of a traditional structure. I wish I had my running shoes. I would have went for a run!
Kim S — Google review
Woljeonggyo is very picturesque, especially when lit up at night. Just be aware that the bridge will be closed at 10pm. If you are on the other side, you will have you walk around to the nearby road bridge to re-cross the river.
K J — Google review
Woljeonggyo Bridge is beautiful and breathtaking, such a serene environment. The bridge itself is well preserved and I was honoured to walk in a space I've seen being featured in many dramas. Seeing the bridge in the daytime is beautiful but the real magic happens when the sun goes down!
Belle L — Google review
The bridge is a beautiful reconstruction, there's a very small museum room upstairs open during the day. Although the upstairs was closed when we came back, it's definitely worth visiting in the dark!

This magnificently reconstructed wooden bridge in Gyeongju is famed for its stunning night illumination and perfect water reflection. The pavilion on the bridge is beautifully lit and often features live traditional music performances by performers in hanbok.

The Woljeonggyo Bridge is a reproduction of the original Silla period structure and had been beautifully constructed. It is an excellent day and night photography destination. It is a popular stop on day tours from Busan and there are a number of restaurants and cafes that are on the site and worth a look including one that sold an excellent injeolmi and ice cream creation.

Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village is a charming and historic village located in Gyeongju, South Korea. Known for preserving the traditional lifestyles and architectural styles of the *Silla Dynasty*, the village offers a unique glimpse into Korea's past. The village is especially famous for its well-maintained hanok (traditional Korean houses) and the **Hwangseong Gyochon**, which is an ancestral home of the Gyeongju Choi clan, one of the prominent families during the Silla period. At Gyochon, visitors can stroll through narrow, picturesque lanes lined with traditional homes, and experience the peaceful atmosphere that evokes the past. The houses, with their characteristic tiled roofs and wooden beams, are great examples of the classic Korean architectural style. Many of these homes have been preserved and even restored, with some open to the public, offering visitors a chance to step inside and experience the traditional interiors. One of the village's highlights is **Choi Clan's Village Hall**, where the descendants of the Choi family still celebrate their traditional customs. You can also visit the **Gyeongju Folk Craft Complex** nearby, where artisans continue to practice and sell traditional crafts, such as pottery, embroidery, and wooden sculptures. The village is also well known for its **delicious local cuisine**, especially **ssambap** (rice with various banchan (side dishes) wrapped in leaves), and **hanjeongsik** (a full-course Korean meal). The combination of history, culture, food, and nature makes Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village a captivating place to visit.

It's very noisy and the chairs are right-angled wooden chairs, so they're very uncomfortable. The table is small. The exterior interior is pretty. There are some useless side dishes, so try them since it is a tourist destination. The wait was too long and the price seemed a bit expensive. There is no bell so you have to shout to blur it. But the meat is really delicious. I really wanted to add 10 pieces of meat to the shabu shabu, but I was very satisfied because I was full even without the extra meat. There wasn't much of a wait because it opened after the break time, but if I had come a little later, I would have waited an hour. It's so delicious that I give it a high rating. It was so delicious, I don't think I'll go again, but it remains a good memory. The only reason I don't think I'll go is because of the wait... There aren't many tables for 4 people, so I thought it would be faster to table for 2 people each. There were a lot of empty tables for two, but there were a lot of people waiting in line. Anyway, is something a little strange? Is the system working properly? Maybe it's because they don't have enough workers, but even though the place is empty... they don't call me and the table is narrow. The truffle fried rice was delicious. Cafe
Bichkkuli is a popular traditional tea house in Gyeongju known for its Instagrammable beauty and authentic hanok setting. Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the peaceful atmosphere of the hanok, where seating on the ground offers an authentic tea ceremony experience. The tea house serves delicious Korean rice cake snacks in a variety of pastel colors with honey dip, along with delightful drinks.
If you're seeking an authentic slice of Korean culture, tucked away from the bustling tourist areas, this café in Gyeongju is a must-visit. Housed in a serene hanok, the traditional Korean architecture offers a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy a variety of unique beverages, like the highly recommended Korean plum drink known for aiding digestion. The menu features delightful traditional snacks and desserts, including rice cakes that come highly praised by visitors for their taste and texture. Be sure to try the colorful grilled injeolmi! Dipping the rice cakes in jocheong syrup makes them incredibly sweet and delicious. The jocheong was so good that we wanted to buy some ourselves, it was handcrafted and helps with digestion while leaving a clean aftertaste. Particularly, the plum, omija, and lemon ginger carbonated water was refreshingly clean and delicious without the spiciness of ginger. I was so impressed, I wish there was a place like this in Seoul. The charm of this café extends beyond its menu; the traditional floor seating and the modern convenience of ceiling air conditioning ensure comfort throughout your visit, especially during the warmer months. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this spot is celebrated for its friendly owner, excellent service, and the joy of choosing from an array of uncommon tea options and baked goods. Don’t miss out on this gem that combines culinary excellence with cultural authenticity—perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the real Korean café culture.

A MUST. The nicest workers, coolest atmosphere, and best tea. The tea was honestly the best I’ve ever had. I have no bad things to say about this place because it is amazing. We got the recommended items. It’s 100/10

Stopped here for some tea and snacks with my friends on our trip to Gyeongju. We have no Korean but the owner was a lovely lady and it was very easy to order. We each tried two different teas and the grilled rice cakes. It was so delicious.

2025.03.31 Not knowing the type of tea that I should order, the owner of Bichkkuli (빛꾸리) suggested that I tried the healthy persimmon tea made from wild leaves hand-picked from Jiri mountain. The rice cakes came with 6 flavours, - the sticky one entails cutting, pulling and twisting (similar to eating spaghetti). Floor seating with cool ambience. Not for those with weak knee.

If you want a real hanok experience this is the place to visit rather than the many replicas around the neighborhood. I spent many childhood summers here sleeping in those very rooms when the hanok belonged to my grandparents who have long passed on. I came back with my own family 40+ years later to show my daughter where her ancestral home is. It brought tears to my eyes. I’m so grateful to the tea owner who has lovingly restored the hanok rather than tearing it down or making garish renovations. Her handmade teas and rice cakes are wonderful. You’ll feel restored here and will understand a bit more about what life used to be like around here.

Nestled in the heart of Gyeongju, With Gusto is a delightful culinary haven that beautifully marries traditional and modern aesthetics. This charming restaurant offers an array of Western dishes, each crafted with passion and flair. Diners rave about the Shrimp Basil Pasta and Pasta Vongole, often paired with a refreshing glass of white wine. The atmosphere is inviting, making it an ideal spot for both casual meals and special occasions.
The dining experience at With Gusto was one of the most memorable moments in our most recent trip to Korea. We had Shrimp Basil Pasta and Pasta Vongole paired with white wine, as well as salad and homemade bread. The service, atmosphere, and most importantly, the food were just amazing. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Gyeongju. A hidden gem in the area! If I had more time, I would have tried all of their menu items! Thank you, Chef!

Korean traditional full course meal restaurant
Yosokkoong 1779 is a renowned restaurant in Gyeongju, offering an exceptional dining experience with traditional Korean cuisine. The restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating, allowing guests to dine in beautiful pine wood rooms or under wood-beamed roofs. As a 300-year-old certified establishment of Royal cuisine run by the Choi family, Yosokkoong has received accolades from various organizations for its authentic and organic dishes.
Excellent experience of traditional high-class Korean foods and environment. Formal course of Korean dishes not to disappoint. Do not expect heavy meat or grill foods with strong spicy flavor. Entering this place itself to look around for your meal is worth spending extra money on. The only downside of course meal is that you need to keep up with your serving speed and others. You can choose your private room. Try it, if you can!

Japanese experience centered around Korean cuisine. We enjoyed the private Japanese style rooms with floor seating and many of the dishes were well presented and flavourful. The outside garden is breathtaking and very picturesque for a summer dinner. We were less happy with our raw fish salad that had many bones and was a bit hard to chew. We would also like to have taken it a bit slower - in our case all of the dishes were on our table within 40 minutes of being seated. Overall a positive experience.

A truly beautiful experience. Everything was amazing... the architecture was local and authentic, the gardens were breath taking with the evening light making the tree scenery seem very exotic. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious! If you're looking for a truly Korean culinary experience-- this is it.

We ate at House of Choi for dinner. We ate the 69,000 won meal option as we booked late. We were given a private room and our appetizers immediately came out. The first three dishes were delicious. It was followed by a salad and raw fish with seaweed wrap. The final set of dish was a simple Korean side dishes with rice, along with galbi-gin. The first set of dishes were great for set meal. The last dishes were like from a cheap Korean restaurant. The galbi was overcooked and chewy. The server was rushing to serve our dishes even though we were still working on our last set of meals. They don't monitor us and serve the next set of dish as we finish each set. They claim that they have a big party and needed to serve all the rooms together. That seems like lazy service. The price of the meal was not worth it. I recommend other restaurants more reasonably priced restaurants in the area. Not sure if they're trying to Michelin Star or not but they are a long way from it if they are.

The place is so amazing and the food served reminds you of what the royalties used to feast on. But what really blew my mind away is to sit in the room (traditional rooms) and open the window to a beautiful view of the garden! Love it!

We weren’t able to figure out the reservation system as foreigners with no Korean phone number but the hostess Grace helped us. She also came to explain all the dishes in English to us which made the experience that much better. Had an amazing lunch! Thank you, Grace!

If you looking for real traditional Korean food, you have to book and go for it. A kitchen from 300 years ago, inside a millennial place, served as king was served long time ago in the UNESCO village of Gyeongju. What else? I don’t want to share anything else because is one of the place you have to visit, and not written in a review. Thank you!
Salvo F — Google review
Excellent food and ambiance. Strongly recommended. One of the best royal meal dining experiences we’ve had, but on the expensive side comparatively. The food has much creativity, and it is very well prepared - a fine dining experience. We ordered the additional kimchi and meat side which was well worth it. Friendly staff, but not the strongest English spoken here. We’re glad we didn’t put too much weight on the negative reviews we saw, they clearly had their own issues.

Constructed in 774, the Buddhist temple complex situated on Mount Toham boasts two pagodas. The location is breathtaking with a serene maple-tree setting that enhances the beauty of its stunning buildings designed with impressive roofing beams. Although it attracts many tourists, who flock to admire its architectural marvels and attend active prayers performed by worshippers, it still maintains a tranquil atmosphere.
This large temple area is one of the most important cultural sites in Korea, and UNESCO World Heritage site. It consists of seven different halls, most of them are reconstructed, but they contain old Buddha statues. The two stone pagodas in the main courtyard are nearly 1300 years old. All in all, Bulguksa houses 7 different items that are designated National Treasures of Korea. This is worth a trip! You should calculate 3 hours if you really want to savor this important place.

Well worth a visit. Easy access from Gyeongju on bus 10, 11, or 700. Gets very busy (arrive early and avoid weekends). Optional walk up the mountain to the grotto. Takes about two hours up and down. Most people take the bus. You can photograph the statues from outside but not once inside the temple.
Russ — Google review
Of all the temples we visited in South Korea, this one was the oldest, biggest, and also our favourite. I recommend visiting it very early or late in the day to avoid crowds. But also, take into account that some of the shrines inside start closing around 17:00 - 17:30.

Scenic and Serene This place is a must to go place when in Gyeongju. The tress.. the air and the surroundings makes it beautiful to visit specially when the weather is not hot. The inside is beautiful. This place has some kind of peace and a happy feeling. At my time of visit, the weather was nice and it was raining a little which made my day beautiful. Surprisingly there were many tourists on the same day.

With Auttum colors, this scenic temple is breathtaking. Must visit for every tourist. Temple compound has beautiful landscape and aquascape. Entrance is free and closes at 5 pm. It needs lot of walking but still worth the visit. If driving, plenty of parking space available, if taking a bus, though not frequent but bus stops are right on the main road in front of the temple.

This buddhist temple is well known and cherished among Koreans as it is over 1300 years old. My second time coming here after 20 years as I still had fond memories. While it was raining when I was here, the serenity and sounds of raindrop hitting the terracotta roofs adds to the effects. Check out the surrounding gardens and well maintained landscaping works.

Must go visit due to this is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism in Gyeongju. Originally built in the 8th century during the Silla Kingdom, it represents the peak of Buddhist art and historical architecture from that golden age. A lot people when enter they will drink the fresh, cold water from the temple's natural spring, believed by many to be blessed and to hold healing properties. We will see a lot stack rocks at temples as a meditative act of making a prayer, earning merit, and creating a symbolic sacred structure, while also accepting the impermanence of all things.

An old temple that got renovated multiple times through history as result of fire and Japanese invasion. The park itself is very big and will require quite a good amount of walking. There is not much to see apart from the temple itself which is not that big. We went during public holiday but there are still parking spots available that is right at the entrance of the park.

The Gyeongju National Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and culture lovers. Established in 1945, it houses an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to the Silla Dynasty, offering insight into the lives and traditions of the Silla people. Exhibits include intricately crafted pottery, Buddhist sculptures, ancient royal tombs, ceremonial weapons, and the Emillejong (National Treasure No. 29), also known as the Bongdeoksa Bell.
Free entry. It’s got to have the best cleaned glass displays in any museum. Almost ran into the glass towards the displays. Be sure to check out the building across the bridge to find out about how they keep the relics well.

An excellent museum to discover and deepen your knowledge of the Silla period. I recommend starting your stay in Gyeongju with this visit — it’s free and provides valuable context for exploring other sites, especially the tumuli. The museum also offers an app with additional explanations in English for selected artifacts. Lockers are available to store your belongings, and several bus lines stop nearby. The only drawback is that there aren’t many dining options in the immediate area, so it’s worth planning your meals accordingly.

Hwangnyongsa Temple Site

Historical place
Hwangnyongsa Temple Site was a grand 9-story temple constructed in the 7th century without using any nails. Legend has it that King Jinheung intended to build a palace on the site but changed his plans after dreaming of a yellow dragon ascending from the pond, leading to the construction of this Buddhist temple. The site features artifacts excavated from nearby Wolji Pond and Hwangnyongsa Temple, including Silla crowns and the impressive Emille Bell.
This place wasn't on my original itinerary, I found it while walking around my hotel. First off the temple is smack in the middle of the business district and can be seen from all sides. Also looking for something to fill your Instagram, this is the place. So many spots are Instagram worthy. However, it is only open to the public twice a day, 10am and 2pm so bear in mind. Feel yourself with peace and serenity as you go through the place.

Seokguram Grotto, located on Mount Toham in South Korea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient Buddhist sculptures and stunning sea views. Visitors can take a bus from Bulguksa Temple to reach this historical hermitage. The grotto features a beautifully sculpted Buddha statue inside a small cave, surrounded by various figures following the Indian tradition of carving images of the Buddha on stones and natural caves.
Its an amazing heritage site with an ancient temple with Buddha Statue. The bus ride to the top of the mountain in the afternoon was very thrilling. The last bus to return to the main bus station is 5.40 pm. Really nice place to visitt

The route to this place has lovely views on a windy road suitable for motorcycles to enjoy the bends. A short walk along a path to the granite statue. It was a pity after Covid that people are not allowed in to the cave where the statues are. And no photos are allowed to be taken either. So feels like a waste to go all the way there and not able to take photos of a beautifully carved statue and cave.
D C — Google review
We took a taxi and a long walk in the rain to see Seokguram Grotto, a national treasure. We were not allowed to take photos inside the statue area, and there was a glass wall that prevented us from entering, but we could still see the statues and some of the walls. Unfortunately, we were unable to view the roof above the Seokguram Grotto statues.

Be prepared to walk to this temple. It is located on top of the hill still a good length away from the main parking lot. Once you get to the temple there are more stairs you have to take in order to get there. While there may be a lot of walking the views make up for it.

It was free admission to the grotto when I visited in June 2023. Bus fare (#12) is 1700KRW each way from Bulguksa temple. Bus schedule attached. While interesting to see, despite the glass partition, IMO it is not worth a 6000KRW admission fee + 3400KRW bus fare round trip. So I'm pleased it was free admission! I'd skip it if short on time.

Not possible to make photos or videos inside. It is very compact. In a glance, you see everything, but it is wonderful. Nice the temple close to it as well and the small walk to reach it from the parking lot

Very pretty place. Slightly different than the rest of the temples around Korea. However, there is a glass between you and the god statue so you are not able to see it up close. Still an awesome sight to see the structure and carvings. A pretty view from the top,

Brunch restaurant
Venzamas is a charming brunch cafe situated in Gyeongju, away from the bustling tourist spots on Hwangnidan street. Accessible by foot rather than car, this popular spot seamlessly combines modern buildings with traditional Korean architecture and countryside surroundings. Visitors also rave about the unique bathroom experience that adds to the overall relaxation of the place.
Pet friendly (only outside), the food was pretty good. Parking is spacious which is a big plus for me and for tourists. The place is divided in many sections, the one with brunch was at the end. Staff were friendly :) probably come back if Im near kyong ju

Absolutely dissapointed! It looks like cool fancy place, but in fact it just regular cafe. The prices are quite high for everything. My coffee was discussing 😦 it taste like cheap coffee from convenient store. Ice cream looks so poor as for 10$. Be honest, I was excited high quality brunch, but I've got terrible food and coffee.

Very large cafe with lots of parking and seating. Brunch was good, but some items were off. Bagel not toasted. Not breakfast sausage. Bacon not crispy. Weird bitter side salad. Revisit (reducing to 2 stars): the chicken breast salad is not good. Bitter greens, a chicken breast, and chunks of grapefruit and orange. Like wth is that? And W12,000??? Everything is too Koreanized. 😞

Exotic place in Kyungju! Don't forget before leaving, You should go to the BATHROOM! LOL. The bathroom makes you relax.

Good food and coffee. A little bit pricey, but a great Western-style brunch. There is sweet French toast, a mozzarella sandwich, brunch, steak salad etc.

Nice Cafe, modern design, good tasting brunch, quantity was ok, the beef salad was delicious though but a little pricy.

Great coffee and drink place. I ordered the watermelon shaveice and grape juice. They both taste good. The underground B1 floor has the no-kids zone, perfect for couple or adults to spend the afternoon/night together.

Good coffee. Many distinct separate places to sit and enjoy. Huge property, ample parking. Will return.

$$$$affordable
Korean restaurant
Eepungnyeoguro Ssambap, located at 155 Cheomseong-ro, Hwangnam-dong, offers a delightful introduction to hanjeongsik. The dining experience includes around 30 small plates for two people, featuring kimchi jjeon (pancake), various types of kimchi, mushroom and pork dishes. Despite the visually impressive spread, the quality of the food is not compromised by quantity.
For a fixed menu price of 15,000 won per person, you'll get many side dishes with some spicy pork to be wrapped with vegetables and rice. It's value for money and taste is ok for the price.

Never come here. The food here is not Korean food. It is much more delicious. The main dish is Korean soul food, but it is trash. It was worse than school lunch, and side dishes were tasteless and insincere. The meat quality is the worst, too. Please don't go
Lee I — Google review
It's a feast for the eyes, and it might be worth the asking price just for that. The quality of the ingredients is just fine, and I wouldn't want to go back.

Very good food and service

I am Korean and this restaurant was the worst Korean food I have ever ate. Main dish and the plate were terrible. DO NOT GO HERE foreigners who visit Gyeongju. You will be very disappointed.
김정우 — Google review
The table was literally full of dishes. It was tough that you have even one taste of all dishes. 😄 And also it was delicious 😋 😍 😜 😊
