Cheomseongdae Observatory is a cylindrical structure made of 362 stones, symbolizing the solar year. It is located in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom in Korea. This city was once a bustling cultural and commercial hub with significant archaeological remains. The observatory is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is just one of many historical treasures found in Gyeongju, including Daereungwon Tomb Complex and Bulguksa Temple.
It was one of the best trip I had. It’s a beautiful place, very historic and reach in Culture. The view is stunning.

이재경 — Google review
This park is extensively planned and i thi k most visitors will enjoy at any time of the day. At night, the flower gardens are lit up for visual effects. The fog just adds to the mystics.

Very comfortable place located within the big park. Families could be seen here with kids around. Lovely vibe.

It was just a simple land with flowers and observatory tower. There’s no trees around. And it can be pretty hot.

Take your time to visit this place, there are si many things to see and read, beautiful gardens too.

Cheomseongdae is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia, and possibly even the world. It was constructed during the Silla period, during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647 AD). Cheomseongdae was designated as the country's 31st national treasure on December 20, 1962.

The Gyeongju National Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and culture lovers. Established in 1945, it houses an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to the Silla Dynasty, offering insight into the lives and traditions of the Silla people. Exhibits include intricately crafted pottery, Buddhist sculptures, ancient royal tombs, ceremonial weapons, and the Emillejong (National Treasure No. 29), also known as the Bongdeoksa Bell.
Free entry. It’s got to have the best cleaned glass displays in any museum. Almost ran into the glass towards the displays. Be sure to check out the building across the bridge to find out about how they keep the relics well.

This is a must visit in Gyeongju! The museum is fantastic. There's so much history, the installations are modern and sleek. entrance is free, there's a beautiful pond & cafe where you can chill.
Marcia L — Google review
An excellent museum to discover and deepen your knowledge of the Silla period. I recommend starting your stay in Gyeongju with this visit — it’s free and provides valuable context for exploring other sites, especially the tumuli. The museum also offers an app with additional explanations in English for selected artifacts. Lockers are available to store your belongings, and several bus lines stop nearby. The only drawback is that there aren’t many dining options in the immediate area, so it’s worth planning your meals accordingly.
Elisa L — Google review
It was so crowded. Luckly we were able to find a parking space. No tickets were available for the the crown exhibit. Ot was worth to visit.
Joo Y — Google review
Highly recommend. Excellent exhibions of the artefacts discovered through the ages put into historical context. They had a fab Buddha exhibition also. It's a nice walk from the Woljeonggyo Bridge to the museum and then on to the Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. They also have a good coffee shop 🙂

Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, a stunning historical site dating back to around 674 CE, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the opulence of Korea's ancient royal court. Once a royal residence for a prince of the Silla Dynasty, Donggung Palace served as an elegant venue for grand banquets celebrating significant events and welcoming esteemed guests.
Huge palace ground with scenic lake & garden… recommend to visit during evening to catch the sunset & night lighting views of palace.. Fun fact: you will see this palace in samsung TV wallpaper collection We took guided tour which included this palace as well.. if you planning own trip better to check for opening/ closing timings

Went here in the evening. It was busier then I thought it would be (Sunday night), but not over crowded. It's easy to walk around and would suit all walking abilities. The lighting at night is great for taking photos. There is a parking area and toilets too.
Heather D — Google review
With the pond, the bridge, the royal tombs and the unesco world heritage sites to explore, give yourself an entire day for the area. The pond is beautifully serene, the entrance fee is laughably cheap and you can meet a squirrel or two under the mogwa trees nearby. Absolutely worth the visit.
Mateja L — Google review
This is a tranquil garden with a pond and pavilions as centrepiece. It's worth checking out by circling the pond and view the extensive landscaping works. The pavilions and walking trails are illuminated after sunset.
Chris K — Google review
It's a very beautiful place. There are two cats, one is hurt by the tail. The two cats are really cute and calm. I really hope someone kind and generous can take these two for some vet doctor, especially the cat tail hurting one. The ticket sellers and the staffs are indeed very helpful and friendly.
Natacia K — Google review
We went here around May, weather was totally different with Busan. Its warm and sunny here. Need to buy ticket from entrance , no crowded and you can enjoy to see the historical building here. I think evening time will be more beautiful as we came here in the morning.
Jask L — Google review
Although this is basically all reconstructed, it feels authentic and magical. Come here in the evening and enjoy the lights, the little islands, trees, and pavillons reflected in the lake. But don't forget your Mosquito spray, if you plan on sleeping the following night! 😀

Bridges
Woljeonggyo Bridge is a reconstructed Silla Dynasty bridge that offers a picturesque sight, especially at night when it is illuminated and reflects on the water. It has historical significance as it was part of the love story of a Buddhist monk and a princess, as well as serving as a gateway connecting royal palaces. The original bridge was built over 1000 years ago but sadly burnt down; however, in 2018, the largest wooden bridge in Korea was reconstructed.
We arrived around 9am. The whole area is just absolutely peaceful and serene. The bridge is absolutely gorgeous. While this version is only a new historical replica, you can appreciate the care and beauty that went into keeping the look and feel of a traditional structure. I wish I had my running shoes. I would have went for a run!
Kim S — Google review
Woljeonggyo is very picturesque, especially when lit up at night. Just be aware that the bridge will be closed at 10pm. If you are on the other side, you will have you walk around to the nearby road bridge to re-cross the river.
K J — Google review
The bridge is a beautiful reconstruction, there's a very small museum room upstairs open during the day. Although the upstairs was closed when we came back, it's definitely worth visiting in the dark!
CoinBaron — Google review
This magnificently reconstructed wooden bridge in Gyeongju is famed for its stunning night illumination and perfect water reflection. The pavilion on the bridge is beautifully lit and often features live traditional music performances by performers in hanbok.
- C — Google review
The Woljeonggyo Bridge is a reproduction of the original Silla period structure and had been beautifully constructed. It is an excellent day and night photography destination. It is a popular stop on day tours from Busan and there are a number of restaurants and cafes that are on the site and worth a look including one that sold an excellent injeolmi and ice cream creation.

Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village is a captivating tourist destination that offers a glimpse into the past with its traditional buildings, live demonstrations, and cultural events. This historic hanok village, originally established in the 7th century and reconstructed over time, provides visitors with an immersive experience of South Korean life from ancient times. The village features charming cafes, courtyards, and opportunities to dress in hanbok attire for memorable photos.
Great historic spot with tons of traditional activities to do like kimchi making and even wear Shilla dysnasty era hanbok or traditional clothes. There are tons of cafes and spots to chill. Visited the Choi family residence and learned about their history.
Zhee B — Google review
It is a beautiful village but prices are significantly above even Seoul and food is not the best. Nevertheless worth an afternoon especially if you are in Busan. We were lucky to be there during cherry blossom so it was extra charming.

The Gyochon Traditional Village has hanok-styled houses, shops and restaurants. Very nice to walk in day or night.
K J — Google review
Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village is a charming and historic village located in Gyeongju, South Korea. Known for preserving the traditional lifestyles and architectural styles of the *Silla Dynasty*, the village offers a unique glimpse into Korea's past. The village is especially famous for its well-maintained hanok (traditional Korean houses) and the **Hwangseong Gyochon**, which is an ancestral home of the Gyeongju Choi clan, one of the prominent families during the Silla period. At Gyochon, visitors can stroll through narrow, picturesque lanes lined with traditional homes, and experience the peaceful atmosphere that evokes the past. The houses, with their characteristic tiled roofs and wooden beams, are great examples of the classic Korean architectural style. Many of these homes have been preserved and even restored, with some open to the public, offering visitors a chance to step inside and experience the traditional interiors. One of the village's highlights is **Choi Clan's Village Hall**, where the descendants of the Choi family still celebrate their traditional customs. You can also visit the **Gyeongju Folk Craft Complex** nearby, where artisans continue to practice and sell traditional crafts, such as pottery, embroidery, and wooden sculptures. The village is also well known for its **delicious local cuisine**, especially **ssambap** (rice with various banchan (side dishes) wrapped in leaves), and **hanjeongsik** (a full-course Korean meal). The combination of history, culture, food, and nature makes Gyeongju Gyochon Traditional Village a captivating place to visit.

The Daereungwon Tomb Complex, excavated in 1973, is an ancient burial site of an unknown king and holds over 11,000 artifacts. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Gyeongju Historic Areas and offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Silla era. The city itself is often referred to as a "museum without walls" due to its numerous historical and archaeological treasures, including the Cheomseongdae Observatory and Bulguksa Temple.
Beautiful! Come during spring. Bring your DSLR. It’s gorgeous. Will come back every morning while I’m in Korea. Come earlier since it’s cooler. gyeongju is more humid than Seoul during spring.

What you see is what you get and what you will see are some large, grassy mounds (one containing a small museum). Beautifully maintained, it’s worth an amble but, honestly, thirty minutes is more than enough. Telletubby fans might get more of a kick out of it.

We had a pleasant walk in the complex to visit the tombs and learn more interesting historical stories of Silla Kingdom and the Kings. Admission was free, the vibe was really nice even it was raining heavily when we were there.

Fabulous Worth a journey Theae tombs are very impressive We enjoyed exploring the area and viewing many tombs We enjoyed the tombs at night when they are very beautifully illuminated Most stunning was the museum where you visit a tumb and enjoy the burial chamber and their burial gifts Must see Enjoy
Wim R — Google review
It seems like these burial mounds are everywhere in Gyeongju. What I want know is where are all the big holes where they got the dirt to make these mounds? They are lit up at night. When we visited, there were fireworks. I also wondered how they kept the grass on these mounds so neatly cut.
K J — Google review
I enjoyed the gardens and the walk around the complex, which is free. You can pay a small fee to enter the open tomb, where you can learn about the Silla tombs and horse culture.
Kim S — Google review
Great opportunity to see a tomb from the inside. You need to pay to access this part (ticket booth infront of the entrance). You can see how the tombs are built as well as artefacts that were found in the them. The inside is air-conditioned.

When visiting Gyeongju, South Korea, a trip to Seongdong Market is a must for an authentic gastronomic experience. This bustling traditional market, conveniently located opposite Gyeongju station, offers a wide array of fresh produce, seafood, and ready-to-eat snacks from over 300 stores and 30 street vendors. The market is renowned for its diverse selection of Korean street food where visitors can create their own meals by choosing from various stalls at the food court.
성동시장 Seongdong Market is a very cosy and pretty-empty market in Gyeongju, which sells many street-style food like sundae (blood sausage), fishcake, tteok-bokki, hotteok & other miscellaneous stuffs - similar to the infamous Gwangjang Market in Seoul that all tourists go to get scammed. My partner and I had sundae here, and it was really soft, warm and affordable! Do drop by for quick bites & stroll if you're nearby
SeungJun K — Google review
Much better than the jungang market nearby. This one is more lively, cleaner and more ready to eat food where you can comfortably dine in.

Seongdong Market is a typical Korean Market. But it was pretty quiet during our visit, possibly because it was 3pm on a rainy Monday. We ate at a food stall. The tteokbokki, spicy fried chicken, tempura and onion pancake was good and cheap.

It is a must place for anybody - food market, fish market and shopping. High quality traditional suits and more Perfect place to spend some hours
Invest G — Google review
Come and experience the authentic Korean street food. How it works here is like a mini buffet. First choose a stall at the food court (for me, I just go for the one surrounded by most ahjumas). Then grab a seat. You will be given a bowl of rice, soup, cutlery and most importantly an empty plate! With the spread on the table, you are free to add whatever you would like to have it with rice. Tips: if you have a curious tastebud, take a little of something you'd like to try. If you like it, you can always go for more.

Cheonmachong, also known as the Heavenly Horse Tomb, is a famous Silla burial mound dating back to the 5th or 6th century. It was unearthed in 1973 and is one of the few tombs open to the public. The tomb is believed to belong to a high-class nobleman, although the owner's identity remains unconfirmed.
Great experience to be able to enter the tomb to see what inside actually looks like. A lot of artifacts were displayed inside. Strongly recommend you to visit. We were here around 7+pm still open. And during the day of our visit, admission was free for some reason.

It was a remarkable experience to explore one of the magnificent royal tombs of the Shila kingdom in Kyongju City. The tombs were filled with a wealth of artifacts and royal treasures, all meticulously preserved for visitors to admire. Although many of the treasures on display were replicas, their splendor was undeniable. The genuine artifacts are housed in the National Museum in Seoul, but this visit was an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

Starbucks is a Seattle-based coffeehouse chain known for its signature roasts, light bites, and WiFi availability. In Gyeongju, South Korea, there's a Starbucks located near popular tourist attractions like Woljeonggyo Bridge and Wolseong Palace Excavation Site. The café has a warm and soft atmosphere with traditional Korean house exterior design. Visitors can enjoy cool lime drinks while admiring the preserved old Korean architecture.
Nice exterior as most buildings have traditional styled cafes/restaurants in this area. Air-con was pumping as it was super hot that day. The interior of the Cafe is large, has a bathroom but was really packed even though there was heaps of seating.

To be avoided completely. We (2 gay Europeans) went to the till to order. The waitress didn't bother to look at us and brushed us off to serve the customer behind us who looked Korean. If that's racism, I think it's pathetic for a chain that claims to be Open Mind.

Standard Starbucks wrapped in a traditional Korean hanok style. This was an easy landmark for us because our hanok was around the corner on a quiet side street.

One of the prettiest Starbucks cafes in existence. There is also a part to sit on the floor without shoes, traditional style.

Great service as usual from Starbucks. The building is so unique and beautiful. Due to the cold weather and rain, that hot Matcha was so good.

Historical place
Geumgwanchong is a part of the Silla tombs located in the Noseo-dong district, near the main shopping area. It is an ancient tumulus built between the 4th and 5th centuries and was excavated between 1921 and 1946, revealing significant finds including two gold crowns.
preserved burial site. there is a detailed digital explanation too. there is entrance fee 3,000 won and note it’s a small place that has an annex that is included too

Wow! We stumbled upon this museum while taking a stroll through the tombs on a beautiful sunny morning. What a fantastic find! We had visited the main museum already where it displayed basic information about the tombs and a replica of the coffin area. But visiting Geumgwanchong museum shows in detail exactly how the tombs were made, and it's fascinating. It's inside of a real tomb! Be sure to visit both buildings and view the presentations.
Shawn P — Google review
⚠️ The mounds are NOT for walking. Look at them and take pics if you want, but do not climb them or you will be fined heavily and possibly go to jail for up to 2 years! ⚠️ Geumgwanchong is a large ancient tomb located in Gyeongju, South Korea, part of the Daereungwon Tomb Complex. It dates back to the Silla Dynasty and is known as the "Gold Crown Tomb" because of the gold artifacts, including a crown, that were found inside. The tomb is one of the many royal burial mounds scattered across Gyeongju, which was once the capital of the Silla Kingdom. Visitors can explore the surrounding park where the tomb is located, along with other nearby royal tombs. The site offers a peaceful atmosphere with grassy mounds and walkways, making it a popular spot for both history enthusiasts and casual visitors. There is no entrance fee specifically for Geumgwanchong, but there is usually a fee for entering the larger Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which includes access to other important tombs like Cheonmachong. There are informational signs in both Korean and English that explain the historical significance of the tombs. It’s best to visit during daylight hours, and the complex is a short walk or taxi ride from the city center of Gyeongju.

We were staying at a nearby hotel and decided to go for a walk the morning of our departure, when we came across the Geumgwanchong Silla Tomb Information Center. What a find. In the first hall you get to see the inside of the tomb to appreciate the construction and all the work and ceremony that went into its construction and the subsequent burial. The second hall is the museum where you get to learn more about the Silla and contents of the tomb. Highly recommended if you are interested in Korean history and culture.
Cornelius F — Google review
Geumgwanchong Tomb is a fascinating historical site that offers a unique glimpse into the ancient Silla Dynasty. As one of the many royal tombs in Gyeongju, it stands out for its significance and the treasures that were discovered within. The tomb itself is well-preserved, and the surrounding area is beautifully maintained, creating a serene environment that invites reflection on Korea's rich history. What makes Geumgwanchong particularly special is the opportunity to see the artifacts that were excavated from the tomb, some of which are displayed in nearby museums. These include stunning gold crowns, jewellery, and other royal items that showcase the craftsmanship and wealth of the Silla period. The site is easy to access and provides informative signage to help visitors understand the historical context. It's a quiet and peaceful place, making it a perfect stop for anyone interested in ancient history.
Kavana R — Google review
The measly 3,000 won entrance fee was definitely worth it! Entrance includes admission to 2 separate buildings: excavation area and tombs excavation center. An incredible animated film plays on a loop in the second one. Staff didn’t speak a lot of English but they were very kind. Highly recommended!!!

Gyeongju Jungang Market is a vibrant marketplace in Gyeongju-si, offering a diverse array of local products, crafts, and traditional Korean snacks. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture while browsing for unique souvenirs. The market is known for its bustling atmosphere and provides an opportunity to experience the city's cultural offerings.
I love the Night Market concept where one could buy a box of 4 for KRW 12K, and pick any 4 types of food to try. Credit cards are accepted, that was so convenient. Quality of the food was of high standards. The place is also very clean. Seats are available. Paper napkins are free to use as well. The Night Market opens at 6pm-11pm. Great for night owls. The rest of the Gyeongju shops closed super early. The streets are like ghost town on a Saturday evening.

When in Gyeongju, one must try the famous Hwangnamppang (Hwangnam Bread) from the original store. This delectable treat is a simple yet tasty bread made from flour dough filled with naturally sweetened red bean paste. The bakery is known for its creamy red bean filling and offers the option to purchase in boxes for friends and family back home.
The lines were long but it was worth the 30 minute wait.

We walked in, ordered two pieces of bread filled with the red bean paste. It was served warm and was tasty. The place was busy people coming in for their orders. It’s quite a large bakery that produces just one item. It was good, though I get the impression this place runs more on nostalgia than the actual pastry itself.

Absolutely dissapointed! It looks like cool fancy place, but in fact it just regular cafe. The prices are quite high for everything. Very large cafe with lots of parking and seating. Brunch was good, but some items were off. Bagel not toasted. Not breakfast sausage. Bacon not crispy. Weird bitter side salad. Revisit (reducing to 2 stars): the chicken breast salad is not good. Bitter greens, a chicken breast, and chunks of grapefruit and orange. Like wth is that? And W12,000??? Visitors can explore hip shops, teahouses, cafes, and enjoy Instagram-worthy food and live music.
Had a great time here, taking a day trip. This is pretty much what feels like a must-visit if you're in the area. 황리단길(Hwangnidan-gil): Where Tradition Meets Trend in Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil is a charming street in Gyeongju where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly. Gyeongju, long known as the city of kings and ancient tombs from the thousand-year-old Silla Dynasty, surprises visitors with its youthful and vibrant transformation—thanks in large part to this very street. Lined with beautifully preserved hanok-style buildings, the area is filled with cozy cafés, unique boutiques, and stylish eateries, making it especially popular among younger travelers. The elegant traditional architecture harmonizes with contemporary design, turning the entire street into a living gallery. It’s a perfect spot for food lovers, with plenty of dessert cafés and brunch places to explore. And since it’s located near the stone wall path of Daereungwon Tomb Complex, it’s easy to combine cultural sightseeing with a relaxing stroll. Whenever I’m in Gyeongju for a seminar or workshop, I make sure to stop by Hwangnidan-gil for a quiet cup of tea. Visiting in the morning or around sunset offers a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for walking and photography. The street is full of picturesque corners, making it a favorite for capturing memorable shots. If you're planning a trip to Gyeongju, Hwangnidan-gil is an absolute must-visit. It’s a place where the timeless beauty of tradition meets the pulse of modern life—revealing a fresh and unexpected side of this historic city.

Nice change from the oppressiveness of Seoul. Eclectic restaurants, cafes, shops, desserts and snacks (fried squid on a stick!). Touristy, with a bit of kitsch, but mostly done right. Hanok-styled architecture is mandated (see Starbucks review) nothing over 2 storeys. Short walk to historical sites. We visited in October so there were no crowds. I imagine the heat and swarms in the Summer may be unpleasant.
K J — Google review
A lot of nice souvenirs and trinkets shops. Nice to walk down alleys of traditional korean shophouses. However, the 10cent cheese shop and street food is very repetitive. Would be nice to have a greater variety of street food. Recommend to bring your international driving license to ride the buggy cars around for rental. Fun and cheap activity.
Nznd — Google review
Hwangnidan-gil is one of the most charming and trendy streets in Gyeongju, blending history with a modern, artsy vibe. Lined with beautifully renovated hanok-style buildings, the street is filled with cozy cafés, boutique shops, and restaurants offering both traditional and fusion cuisine. It’s a great place to stroll, take photos, and enjoy the unique atmosphere that mixes old and new. Many cafés and shops have thoughtfully designed interiors, making them perfect for a relaxing break or a social media-worthy snapshot. The area is especially lively in the evening when the lights add to the ambiance. However, it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, so visiting earlier in the day or on weekdays is recommended for a more relaxed experience. Prices at some cafés and restaurants are slightly higher than average, but the quality and experience often make up for it. Overall, Hwangnidan-gil is a must-visit for those looking to experience a different side of Gyeongju beyond its historical sites. Whether you’re a foodie, a coffee lover, or just someone who enjoys exploring vibrant streets, this area has plenty to offer.

this covers a huge area and there are lots of food and cafe options here as well as trendy select shops. half a day isn't even enough if you want to fully explore every nook and cranny. most of the cafes are super aesthetic and even in traditional hanok style. honestly i feel this area beats jeonju's hanok village in vibes and quality of food selection. there's korean, thai, viet, japanese, chinese, western food etc here and you'll be spoilt for choice. weekends are particularly crowded so getting a seat at popular restaurants will have a wait time

Went for dinner on a weekday night. No wait with plenty of seating options and great ambience. Tried their Ragu pasta and seasoning risotto. The ragu pasta was delicious and flavourful. For the risotto, the waiter kindly informed us about the spice level (around shin ramyeon level) and adjusted it to a non spicy version so we could still enjoy it. I think if you can handle a bit of spice, it would definitely enhance its flavour!

Tasty enough. Curry rice was good, truffle spaghetti also not bad. Poutine was more like fries in a Bolognese sauce, not gravy. Flavor aside, the portions are way too small. A grown man such as myself can easily handle two portions of anything here. They must be making a killing. But in some sense, most women are dieting so it's better than letting food go to waste. And such restaurants are always targeting women and hapless boyfriends/husbands.

They were very unkind with our baby. Food was quite bad, we ordered pizza and risotto. These were not tasty at all, like a bunch of ingredients cooked together without any sense and a lot of spicy at all. They shall not use names as pizza or risotto since they are not cooking these dishes. Only good thing was beer. Total price 50,000 KRW we may have spent in other place.

Pizza was good, definitely try out the truffle one, soooo good. The pasta and other dishes are just alright. Overall it was pretty decent, you can order from the iPad so if you can’t speak Korean you’ll be fine!

Great pizza and pasta. The pizza's and pasta's are an Asian take on the classic dishes: some dishes are spicy (but it's very clear on the menu). It was surprisingly good. They also have craft beer on draft, i really liked it.

PIZAOK is one of the most delicious restaurant in Gyeongju, Busan. There are so many kinds of pizzas and pastas on the menu. The pepperoni pizza is a little spicy but it is very delicious. One of the other menu items, Tomato Pasta, has a good tomato flavor. The restaurant is very clean and the atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy and calm. The staff are incredibly friendly and there is ample seating in the restaurant. The prices on the menu at this restaurant are usually pretty high, but you might think the taste of the food justifies the cost. I think it's really worth a visit, and I recommend this restaurant to those who like Western food.

The pizza I had, was a korean twist on pizza which I did not enjoy. However my mate had the same thing and loved it. My warning the pizza has egg on it and kinda tastes sweet. I did get a little adventurous, next time I'll buy something more traditional.

Cheomseongdae Pink Muhly in Gyeongju is a year-round beauty, with autumn being the best time to witness its vibrant pink muhly fields. The soft pink hue of the grass creates a picturesque setting, perfect for capturing profile-worthy snapshots. Visitors are advised not to step on the muhly to preserve its beauty. The serene atmosphere offers benches for relaxation and traditional Korean music playing in the background.
The cheomseongdae Observatory is one of the oldest Observatories in the world. The near tombs, sunflower fields, lotus fields, palace complexes - all make Gyeongju on the best places I have visited in Korea. Its a hidden gem.

Sigol Ssambap is a must-visit dining spot in Gyeongju, South Korea, known for its delicious and traditional Korean ssam dishes. The restaurant offers an extensive variety of banchan (Korean side dishes) that are sure to impress any food enthusiast. Despite the modest setting, the generous and flavorsome servings of pork and diverse banchan options make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
It was packed but they prepared a table for us 3. Order special and try all great traditional banchan and lettuce sesame leaves, exotic plants so very reasonable price.

The food was very disappointing. Although there were many side dishes, there wasn't much that was actually enjoyable. There are plenty of other places where you can experience authentic and delicious Korean traditional food. I would not recommend this place.

Most authentic Korean dinner that we had during this winter holidays! Warm and friendly though no much communication in a typical roadside homely setting restaurant. The dishes were not salty but distinctly flavourful .. sumptuous! Side dishes were unlimited but we really couldn’t repeat most as portions were generous. Very happy to dine here and look forward to be here so my family makes future trips to Gyeongju!

It's a great place for an authentic experience in a district a little bit hipster. The ladies running the place were extremely nice. For the price of dish for two people (32000won)we've gotten 19 different banchan plates and two soups, on top of the actual order. The banchans were also really unique, both veggie, seafood and Fish based. Totally an experience worth repeating.

Usually when there's a queue at a restaurant, it is a good sign ! Well... That wasn't the case for this one ! We were served half the dishes we ordered and some of them were really not good... I mean they tasted unfreshed and extremely salty (oysters, seafood soup...). I really hope we don't get sick 🤢

After being in Korea for 1 month i still find little places like this one that completely mesmerize me! The pork was superb! All the little side dishes just exploded with flavours! (Loved in particular the little fish one) And the side fish soup was out of this world! If you pass trough gyeongju make sure to pass by this place! Oh and just to add it is very cheap! Gyeongju 10 Won Bread, also known as hwangnam-ppang, is a popular snack in Gyeongju, South Korea. These dainty pastries are imprinted with a picture of a chrysanthemum and feature a dense egg pastry that reveals sweet red bean filling. The snack is dumpling-sized and has been compared to Chinese moon cakes. Additionally, the bread is printed in the style of a 10 won coin, giving it its name.

Talk about hipster food- this is everywhere in Gyeongju and everyone, locals and tourists alike, are buying this mozzarella cheese waffle in a 10 KRW coin design. Not bad at all and a very filling snack. Very stretchy cheese which is testament to the amount of cheese used.

Bit of a long line for this place but it was worth it on a cold winter's day. I initially thought they were putting large chunks of butter in the grilled pastries but it turned out to be cheese! It was so stringly and the savoury nature of the cheese balanced well with the mildly sweetened and soft pastry external layer. The snack was printed in the style of 10 won coin, hence the name of the snack.

Doran Doran Guest House is a charming hanok stay in Gyeongju that offers a delightful and authentic experience. Situated in a perfect walkable location between Gyeongju's major archaeology parks and close to various bus stops, it provides a quieter alternative to the bustling neighborhood nearby. The small, family-run hanok hotel boasts meticulous cleanliness and a lovely courtyard garden, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere.
We stayed here for two nights in mid-February. I had a traditional bed room (mattress on the heated floor), and my nephew had a room with a regular bed. We were both very comfortable. I will note that the traditional (floor) bed's mattress was, per my nephew who lives in Korea, fatter and more comfy than is usual. I wanted the experience, and I am glad of the nicer mattress; it was quite comfortable. The rooms are as pictured on their website - modestly sized but completely adequate and comfortable and very clean. There is a small fridge for beverages, slippers for the bathroom, good light, a small dresser with a stool, and the bed. The ondol (floor) heating was perfect, and I could see an air conditioner, although we didn't need that in February. We much appreciated the good breakfast to start the day - with coffee, tea, juice, hot sandwiches available, lots of fruit options, toast, boiled eggs and more, plus sides like peanut butter and Nutella, etc. The location is excellent. Upon arriving, the gentleman greeting us recommended we walk over to visit the night-time illuminated Donggung Palace & Woji Pond, which we did and enjoyed very much; the “away” side of the pond has lovely views and is quiet. The next day we walked over to the tomb complex, the Woljeonggyo Bridge, saw the Cheomseongdae Observatory, much enjoyed visiting the Cheonmachong tomb (where you can enter, and which has interesting displays and historical information), and we wrapped up with a stroll along Hwangridan-gil people-watching and stopping for dinner. All of this was relatively easy (my young adult nephew says “easy!”) walking distance from the guesthouse. We didn’t move our car from the time we parked to check in at the guesthouse until we checked out. Excellent location. Comfortable and friendly-staffed accommodation.

We had the most magical stay at Doran Doran during our time in Gyeongju. The place itself is so pretty, quiet and secluded. The rooms are very clean with all the amenities you could need. The location for access to all the sites in Gyeonju is also actually perfect. What really makes the stay are the hosts, they are so sweet and kind and will do anything to make you feel welcomed. We came here in summer and love it so much, we decided to return during winter with a visiting friend. The room was comfortable with private bathroom, air conditioner and heater, the location is great, we walked to the pond, museum, royal tombs and lots of restaurants nearby. The breakfast is easy mix of self cooked eggs and sandwiches, selection of tea, coffee, juice to start the day. The staffs/owners are friendly and welcoming. We might come back for the third time😄.

We just finished a four night stay at Doran Doran Guest House. Originally, we thought that we stayed too long in Gyeongju but we had an amazing stay because of the wonderful hospitality of the grandma. She painstakingly made delicious breakfast for us every morning, including fruits, eggs, and ham and cheese bread. She and her husband live in the Hanok and made the living room available to our family so we could play cards and eat our ramen. The rooms were small and the beds were hard but the grandma's hospitality was so warming that our kids said it was the best hotel in our Korea trip. Thank you!

They offer a variety of traditional liquors, and are especially known for their makgeolli (rice wine). We ordered yukjeon (pork cutlet) and donkatsu (pork cutlet). Recommended Menu - Yukjeon (pork cutlet), kimchijeon (kimchi pancake), and squid with vinegar (optional) - Strawberry makgeolli (seasonal) The yukjeon was served with refreshing jaetagi (Korean traditional fish) and was delicious when eaten together. The egg mixture could have made it a bit fishy, but the soy sauce-and-vinegar marinated jaetagi counteracted it. The meat was tender and paired well with the makgeolli. The donkatsu was simple, but still crispy. This goes well with soju (beer). * Bring your own alcohol and pay at the checkout. (Translated by Google) A government office in charge of all administrative affairs in Gyeongju City. Parking is free for one hour. (Parking space is small.) A city in Gyeongsangbuk-do. It borders the East Sea to the east, Yeongcheon City and Cheongdo-gun to the west, Ulsan Metropolitan City to the south, and Pohang City to the north. It is one of the oldest cities in Korea and was the capital of Silla for about a thousand years. According to the records of Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, Saroguk, the first city-state, was established in the Gyerim area of Gyeongju on June 8, 57 BC. Around the same time, Gojoseon's Wanggeomseong Castle fell, so the entire city of Gyeongju was lost. It can be said to be an antique and historical stage. There are records of hundreds of thousands of people already living in Gyeongju City during the period of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms[8], and it maintained its reputation as one of the Three Gyeongs (三京) even during the Goryeo Dynasty, and after the rebellion against the military regime in the late Goryeo period, it was changed from the three gyeongs to the three gyeongs. It was excluded and subsequently devastated by the Mongol invasion. However, it was restored to Tokyo and functioned as an important city throughout the Goryeo Dynasty. In addition, even during the Joseon Dynasty, its status was still the same, as the 'Gyeong' character of Gyeongsang-do was taken from Gyeongju, and the head of Gyeongju-bu, Buyun (府尹), was designated as Bu (府) and was ranked second grade as a servant and was on the same level as Gwansa-sa. It was the largest city in Gyeongsang-do to the extent that it had the status of a metropolitan city, and at the same time, it was the largest city in Namin, Yeongnam, along with Andong City, including Lee Eon-jeok and UNESCO World Heritage sites Yangdong Village and Oksan Seowon. It was the focal point and representative city of noblemen. In other words, it has maintained its reputation as a major city even after the fall of Silla, and the status and scale of Gyeongju were the highest in Gyeongsang-do until the economic development period. However, due to the fact that there are many cultural relics, it is difficult to develop urban areas and build large-scale ports (even though they are in contact with the sea), so development has become insufficient, and today, the neighboring cities of Pohang and Ulsan (which served as a trading port for Gyeongju during the old capital) have grown instead. , In addition, although it is not adjacent, it is now a small and medium-sized city because Busan Metropolitan City and Daegu Metropolitan City are not far away. In Gyeongsangbuk-do, it is the fourth largest city after Pohang, Gumi, and Gyeongsan. It is the 3rd largest city in Korea and the 5th largest among local governments. It is similar to the combined area of Seoul, Goyang, Bucheon, and Gwangmyeong in the metropolitan area. For reference, the 1st place among cities in terms of area is Andong City (3rd place based on local governments), the 2nd place is Daegu Metropolitan City, and the 4th place is Sangju City (6th place based on basic local governments), but the 1st, 3rd, and 4th places are all part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Daegu. The metropolitan city is also a city separated from Gyeongsangbuk-do. In fact, Gyeongsangbuk-do has many local governments with a large area, with as many as seven of its affiliated cities and counties exceeding 1,000㎢. Although it is a city bordering the East Sea, the general public does not know that Gyeongju is a coastal city. The reason is that, unlike nearby coastal cities bordering the sea (Ulsan Metropolitan City, Pohang City, and Busan Metropolitan City), Gyeongju's urban area is located inland, far from the sea. This seems to be because there are so many cultural relics that it gives a strong impression of being a tourist city. However, if you know it, there are quite a few beaches. In fact, if you think about where the tomb of King Munmu (Daewangam) is located, the answer comes out, and the place adjacent to the tomb of King Munmu is Bonggil Beach. And next to it is the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant.

Cafe
Bichkkuli is a popular traditional tea house in Gyeongju known for its Instagrammable beauty and authentic hanok setting. Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the peaceful atmosphere of the hanok, where seating on the ground offers an authentic tea ceremony experience. The tea house serves delicious Korean rice cake snacks in a variety of pastel colors with honey dip, along with delightful drinks.
If you're seeking an authentic slice of Korean culture, tucked away from the bustling tourist areas, this café in Gyeongju is a must-visit. Housed in a serene hanok, the traditional Korean architecture offers a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy a variety of unique beverages, like the highly recommended Korean plum drink known for aiding digestion. The menu features delightful traditional snacks and desserts, including rice cakes that come highly praised by visitors for their taste and texture. Be sure to try the colorful grilled injeolmi! Dipping the rice cakes in jocheong syrup makes them incredibly sweet and delicious. The jocheong was so good that we wanted to buy some ourselves, it was handcrafted and helps with digestion while leaving a clean aftertaste. Particularly, the plum, omija, and lemon ginger carbonated water was refreshingly clean and delicious without the spiciness of ginger. I was so impressed, I wish there was a place like this in Seoul. The charm of this café extends beyond its menu; the traditional floor seating and the modern convenience of ceiling air conditioning ensure comfort throughout your visit, especially during the warmer months. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this spot is celebrated for its friendly owner, excellent service, and the joy of choosing from an array of uncommon tea options and baked goods. Don’t miss out on this gem that combines culinary excellence with cultural authenticity—perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the real Korean café culture.

A MUST. The nicest workers, coolest atmosphere, and best tea. The tea was honestly the best I’ve ever had. I have no bad things to say about this place because it is amazing. We got the recommended items. It’s 100/10

Stopped here for some tea and snacks with my friends on our trip to Gyeongju. We have no Korean but the owner was a lovely lady and it was very easy to order. We each tried two different teas and the grilled rice cakes. It was so delicious.

2025.03.31 Not knowing the type of tea that I should order, the owner of Bichkkuli (빛꾸리) suggested that I tried the healthy persimmon tea made from wild leaves hand-picked from Jiri mountain. The rice cakes came with 6 flavours, - the sticky one entails cutting, pulling and twisting (similar to eating spaghetti). Floor seating with cool ambience. Not for those with weak knee.

If you want a real hanok experience this is the place to visit rather than the many replicas around the neighborhood. I spent many childhood summers here sleeping in those very rooms when the hanok belonged to my grandparents who have long passed on. I came back with my own family 40+ years later to show my daughter where her ancestral home is. It brought tears to my eyes. I’m so grateful to the tea owner who has lovingly restored the hanok rather than tearing it down or making garish renovations. Her handmade teas and rice cakes are wonderful. You’ll feel restored here and will understand a bit more about what life used to be like around here.

Yeomion is a clean and comfortable restaurant with a helpful staff. The menu offers dishes like short rib noodle soup, beef pancake, meat jeon, mixed meat raw fish, bibimbap, noodles, radish soup and yukjeon. The food is delicious with springy noodles and flavorful broth. Some dishes feature overcooked beef while others are small in portion but great in taste. There might be a wait during peak hours but the turnover rate is fast.
Beautiful restaurant with delicious food. Decor is bright and fresh. We had the raw beef and cooked beef bibimbaps, both different and delicious. The egg beef pancake was the best we have had. Highly recommend and easy for English speakers. Great prices too

Clean and comfortable restaurant with helpful staff. Menu is pretty short and we shared the short rib noodle soup and beef pancake. The noodles were springy and broth had depth of flavour. Beef itself was a bit overcooked but overall, not a bad dish. While the beef pancake was more like an omelette, it was delicious. Could do with a sauce though.

Nestled in the heart of Gyeongju, 경주황남동고분군 is a captivating site that feels steeped in mystery and history. The atmosphere here is serene, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls or playful afternoons with family and friends.

(Translated by Google) I don't know why, but it seems like a strangely unknown place. I happened to pass by a large tree, but there was no explanation about it. There is a tree that is very large and has some sort of mysterious power behind it. There is a king's tomb. Isn’t this something that might appear in some myth or game? It's late winter now, so the trees have lost their green color, but this is one of the places you must visit as the cherry blossom season approaches in spring. When spring comes, I want to take pictures of Mujokwon, Daereungwon, the places where trees are blooming on tombs across from Silla Daejong, and the cherry blossom complexes in the Bomun complex. This tree is reminiscent of the very large tree of the Grand Canyon in the United States. In terms of size, the Grand Canyon tree in the United States is by far the largest, but this tree has a very magical feel, perhaps because it is located next to the tomb of a former king. Later, when you find someone you love, come on a nice day and take a photo of just the two of you. It is one of the places that is perfect for taking self-wedding photos, and is beautiful and has a mysterious feel. Jeju Island is a place that feels like a slightly exotic tourist destination. This is the capital before Seoul, so you can feel the long history and tradition. The tombs of kings are gathered in several places, making the entire city a cultural heritage site. Really, I can't believe I'm writing this long story with just this one tree. It is a place that is very beautiful and where you can feel something that cannot be expressed in words. Winter is coming to an end and spring is approaching, but the days were cold, and not just for me. Although it was cold, there were quite a few other tourists like me looking at the trees and taking pictures. This place is close to Cheomseongdae, so you can see Cheomseongdae and this place on foot. Really, this is a place I'm looking forward to this spring or summer. This is a place where I definitely want to take pictures with someone I love again someday. Reminds me of yester-years when I was in Korea. Recognized many things that I have used if not someone I knew. Wish they had more things. Not too much organization and feels it has been haphazardly put together. Still liked the time machine.
Hyunil K — Google review
I think that this place is great as a one time visit (definitely not enough to do to warrant a second trip). There's a decent amount of variety and it's fun to see a glimpse of history
