I keep coming back because of the little communities that consistently keep forming here. With a good mix of long stay and short stay backpackers it's small enough that the cliques/friend groups you find in large hostels don't form and yet big enough that there's always a new faces. The living area is perfect for meeting people as the shared kitchen area and single large dining table means you will be eating/cooking alongside other people for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There's also a shared sofa area perfect for movie nights, window seats for some alone time, a rooftop social/smoking area, free pcs/printing, and five bathrooms and showers. In the time that I have been here there have been dozens of community movie nights, poker nights, chess nights, boardgames/puzzles, rooftop barbeques, beach days, surfing trips, hiking days, nighttime swimming, afl and football trips ect ect. A five minute walk to the 96, 16, 3, and 67 trams into the city, five minutes walk to coles, woolworths, and aldi, and five minutes walk to the beach/albert park/st kilda botanical gardens. The hostel facilities were great - on arrival you get given a locker and box for food storage. Hot showers and clean bathrooms, albeit slightly dated. The communal area was also very nice with Netflix and other useful amenities. The air conditioners were all set to be on but some long stayers kept turning them off so the rooms did get quite hot but a good nights sleep. We did have a few issues including having to move room to accommodate for long stayers but that wasn’t too much hassle. We did think there was slightly too much management for a hostel - from a short stayers perspective we felt like a bit of a nuisance, being woken up by the owner 1hr before checkout time and hurried along on a few occasions. Additionally we found the entrance and initial check in process arduous with no clear entry and desk to the hostel. The hostel guests are now homeless men. I didn’t feel my belongings were safe in public areas. Young travellers and women may feel safer elsewhere. That first floor area also needs better infestation cleanup. I did not see any mice, but I can smell esp in the study area mice droppings which made working there unpleasant. Also the curtains in the room can be better. The split curtain just isn’t working and feels awkward. Beds were very comfy tho and loved that the beds came with thicker blankets for the rooms are a bit chilly at night due to the old building 😜 But otherwise, bathrooms were fine, staff were really nice, work exchange volunteers were kind too and ran events everyday. No complaints in that dept. Would I stay here again? If I was just visiting the city and going out to eat everyday, yes, but for longterm? Very steep stairs up from the external entry/exit, no lift here so no good if you are not able bodied, there is a less steep entry through the beer garden however. I booked the double room as the missus was with me for the 2nd night. Prices here are very cheap, I payed 70 bucks a night online. 70 bucks a night gets you a double room upstairs with no TV, creaky floorboards, no mirror, no cupboard, only 1 chair for a twin share room, no bar fridge, there was a kettle and tea/coffee side table, but no PowerPoint to plug the kettle into, (go figure). Had to plug the kettle in at the bed side table. No courtesy mini milks for the tea/coffee provided, got to buy your own and keep it in the communal fridge in the shared kitchen. There is only one single PowerPoint in the entire room, next to the bed at floor level! You also get two broken heaters, one is an oil radiator, the other looked like a split system style that you would mount on the wall, but was just left on the floor, neither of them worked, and finally a pedestal fan with nowhere to plug it in either. Only good point about the room was the bed was very comfortable. The upstairs hallway carpet was filthy, doesn't look like it has seen a vacuum for a couple of years. No hot water in the kitchen sink, I ran it for 5 minutes and nothing. There was a TV in the kitchen, but again no PowerPoint anywhere to plug it in to, and no remote. Stayed with a guest in a Studio executive high room which had a nice view but it is poorly designed and maintained. Absolute worst part is design where the toilet/shower/sink is right next to the bed. That's just great, moist air and toilet smell near the bed. Bed is also between kitchen and restroom so that is also a choice. There is just a curtain that separates the shower from the other areas. Sink is tiny barely holding toothbrush and toothpaste. In addition to this would be the lacking living area which is the cheapest table and chair combo you can get. It feels like a cheap apartment than a hotel. Holiday Inn is right nearby and has been consistent quality in my travels so I would recommend booking there or elsewhere. First experience with Oaks and it was a disappointment.

On the website it's advertised as soundproof...it's not, you hear up stairs and your neighbors. There is a lot of outside noise as well, I know that can't be controlled but when it says soundproof you do expect some level of quite. The rooms don't look like what was shown. On the balcony there is no table, just a singular plastic chair. It also states there is housekeeping daily but they fail to tell you that cost extra. Same with parking, there is underground parking but that's an extra $25 a day. They have a lot of extra fees that's advertised as inclusive for free butwhen you arrive that is when they tell you it's not inclusive. They say they have premium channels, they don't... They told me some rooms just don't have streaming services and there was nothing they could do despite the remote saying it has the channels. We were stuck with regular TV with lots of advertisement. The coffee machine was half broken, you had to hold the pod as you close the lid and press really hard to pierce the film. Just didn't get what was advertised, did not feel like a 4 star hotel. Disappointed in the sneaky charges. Wouldn't stay here again.

It is a bit out of central Melbourne but easy enough to get into the city as it is right by a train station. I had a twin room with shared bathroom and they were both clean. Just a note there are lots of stairs to get to the room in case that is a challenge for some guests.

The room keys continuously didn't work and I would have to repeatedly go to reception to get it sorted. You have to pay for parking behind there building in the car park which I think is shocking to say how much you pay for a bed anyway. Some little perks like free breakfast but I'd always miss that as it was only on offer after I'd been to work when it should be available to all as it claims.
