We found the VDM and we were hesitant to even tour it because it was at the top end of our budget but we fell in love and now I’ll tell you the story of how we made it work at the end of the day and got everything we wanted while staying mostly true to our budget. We decided on the essentials package (starting at 20k I think?? back in 2023 when we booked) and compromise on things to get married at the VDM. My first piece of advice- SCHEDULE a zoom call to go over the contract before you sign! We were in the process of reviewing the contract and deciding if we could make it work financially and got an email on a Tuesday that we needed to make a decision by Thursday otherwise prices were considerably increasing for the essentials package. Well, we both work crazy hours and I was in the middle of a 24 hour shift and could only communicate via email. I received about 1 email per day from them and felt very unprioritized as a potential future client and bride but again, was just so in love with the venue we decided to take a leap of faith and sign the contract while knowing we still had questions. We realized we couldn’t choose our vendors but the only one we cared about was our photographer and were in the middle of asking if we could pay extra to pick just that one vendor but hadn’t heard back and the deadline was quickly approaching.. We just pulled the trigger. Of course as fate would have it, we were paired with a photographer who offered the exact opposite of the light bright airy fairy tale photo style we were hoping for. Our stomachs sank. I wasn’t expecting much help since I realized we booked through the essentials package, but I was pleasantly surprised and honestly so relieved that they allowed us to book another photographer for no additional fee. It did require a lot of research on my part to find a photographer in the same bracket as they are ranked and only certain vendors are available for the different packages (custom vs essentials) etc. this is how we ended up with BonitaJanephotography and 10/10 highly recommend her and booking her directly if you can. We were quoted ~4-500$/hour extra to add on hours with her as through the essentials package you only get 7 hours photography. Unfortunately that astronomical price wasn’t in budget so we only obtained the 7 hours. All that to say, i would recommend Bonita in a heart beat regardless and her prices are affordable and deliver exceptional quality for the cost. We loved Monica, our day of coordinator, and also couldn’t recommend her more highly! She was the voice of reason, aced the layout of my vision, day of, with the decor we brought in, took excellent notes when we did the final walk through, and just overall was good vibes and high energy and attentive to detail. She knows what she’s doing. That’s the thing with A’bulae.. we loved all our vendors and we do feel we got a great value for the outcome- but we had to compromise. We had a Thursday wedding for only 100 people including my husband and I, paid extra for hors doeurves (20$ pp- insane for how little they actually circulated), used the floral credit but keep in mind this doesn’t cover taxes, fees, set up, tear down, etc- so that’s additional on top of the 1500$ credit, paid for additional open bar for ~18?$pp for an extra 2 hours on top of the included social hour, etc. I made my own Photo Booth with the greenery wall in the carriage house to save costs- highly rec- was a huge hit. Overall, this is a tough review to write because I felt like I made the experience manageable and got creative to keep it cost effective, but still ended up realistically spending around 26k just for the essentials on a Thursday. For ease of planning, an inclusive venue, and if you are willing to compromise- book the VDM.

The layout can feel super odd, but once you get a bunch of stuff in it, it works well so don’t be discouraged. We were super stressed planning on 200. We also moved tables to accommodate a dance floor later in the evening. I found the staff intermittently helpful, it seemed like they may have needed someone checking each other’s e-mails when they are out of town or a better line of communication on who is responsible for answering what questions, at times it was unclear. The venue was swelteringly hot. The smaller room gets the summer sunset. Our ceremony was at 5pm in this room, and I thought I was going to have a heat stroke standing up there. If you are utilizing that room, put up some sort of curtain or sheer situation to make that more bearable. Having said that the entire place seemed like it had an HVAC system that could not keep up with the amount of people in there. I kept telling everyone that if I could have changed anything about the day, it would have been that it was not so hot in there. Full disclosure it was 95 degrees out, but still it should not be an issue to keep indoors cooler than it was. Be aware, if you don’t have a wedding planner, you will be required to do basically everything for yourself. We got lucky with our caterer doing a lot of tasks. But be prepared to be told “that is your responsibility” when inquiring about who does what. The staff is basically there the day of to make sure no one burns down the building. That is it.
