Located in a neoclassical building dating back to 1906, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) is a renowned cultural center managed by the Bank of Brazil. The center offers a diverse range of attractions including art galleries, cinema, theater, and a library. Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions featuring a collection of coins and cells representing various periods of Brazilian history as well as temporary displays showcasing modern art from around the world.
This wasn’t on our list of places to visit but we walked up to it since Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelaria was already closed when we got here. Surprisingly beautiful inside and a chic place to eat, drink and spend time or meet someone. Their creative ideas are appetizing and irresistible, the place is very clean and you can use the comfort rooms if you need to.

Incredible building, great use of space. Pro: - free tickets - easy 3 hour spent - diverse expo (temp and permanent) - antique fixtures and elevator - good A/C Con: - hard to get tickets (you need tickets for each expo and it isn't user friendly) use the real person booth if you are a foreigner (you need a cpf to use the self service machines) - path isn't self explanatory (sometimes hard to figure out where to go next) Overall it was a great museum,
Brian A — Google review
Cultural centre in a former bank building which still keeps some of its old interiors. Top notch modern and contemporary art exhibitions, with superb museography, design and insight. They also have a very good library and gift shop and a nice restaurant.
Carlos O — Google review
Great museum. Entrance is free of charge but a cost free ticket is still required. 1 hour time needed to view the second and fourth floors.

Congrats to Flávio Cerqueira for his outstanding kind of artwork. Took time to think, to admire, to appreciate the power of the art.

Experience was very good. Very nice to visit. It's not too big.

Good exhibit about money, where it come from and Brazils history of it all. Great items on display and heaps to look at. Staff were friendly and the elevator is old school, has the attendant inside who slides the handle to control it.

So impressed by the Centro Cultural! This beautiful center is free entry, and everyone should see it! I went today and found out Walter Firmo’s exposition, and it was highly impressing, and the way it was curated, gorgeous. The ladies from the elevators were super nice. I would come back!

Located in Flamengo Park, central Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro is a contemporary art museum housed in a remarkable 1954 Alfonso Eduardo Reidy building. The museum boasts striking architecture and features a water garden, as well as a theater and lecture halls. It holds an impressive collection of 20th-century works, including pieces by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Di Vacalcanti, Maria Martins, Henry Moore, and others.
Impressive venue, brutalist building with unique design. We could not visit it on the inside since it was closed for refurbishment. We could only visit a branch of the building with a temporary exhibition, not impressed by those paintings. It's a must see for architecture and brutalism lovers.
Pasquale G — Google review
While wandering through the city, we stumbled upon the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. This striking building immediately caught our attention with its unique architectural style. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the 1950s, the museum is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, featuring open spaces and large glass panels that blend the structure with its surroundings. The entrance was free, and inside we found rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Although I was expecting a permanent collection of modern masterpieces, the temporary exhibits were still an interesting and thought-provoking experience. Overall, MAM Rio is a great stop for art lovers and those curious about Brazil’s modernist architectural heritage. Even if you're not an art enthusiast, the building itself and its location in Flamengo Park make it worth a visit.
MarosH H — Google review
The exhibition is limited but fascinating. It’s architecture is beautiful. It seems that its gardens are unique. Though, since they were preparing a COP30 event, they didn’t give access to the garden. Isn’t this contradictory? Where is the respect to the citizens that had a public space restricted?
Mark B — Google review
A melange of paintings, a few sculptures and, the cherry on top, a modern exhibition based on lights, stroboscopic effects and threads.
Tamara C — Google review
Beautiful building. No collection but there was a very interesting exhibition about the great garden designer and landscape architect Burle Marx. The setting is beautiful in the Flamengo Park. Green surroundings. Tram stop nearby (Antonio Carlos) and not far from Lapa on foot.
Gentile P — Google review
Very unpleasant experience. From the moment we entered the 2nd floor, we were closely followed by a museum guard, which made us feel uncomfortable. One guard in particular—a young woman with long curly hair—was especially aggressive in both her expression and behavior toward us and our child. They followed us so closely that it felt intimidating. When we stepped onto a standard balcony area overlooking the 1st floor, the same guard approached us and abruptly told us we were not allowed there, speaking in a very rude manner. At that point, we decided to leave immediately. There were no English skills among the staff, and when we couldn’t speak Portuguese, the guard rolled her eyes at us as if insulted. As we left, there was no polite goodbye or thank you for our visit—only another guard following us. The whole atmosphere felt tense and uncomfortable. We had really been looking forward to this visit, but sadly we left upset and disappointed.
Svend G — Google review
Very beautiful place, a must see! It was my first time in Rio and I visited a couple of the museums however, by far this is my favorite if you're into art painting sculptures whatever it is definitely check the spot out. They had dancing outside of the museum. It was very beautiful and definitely check out the wall butts lol.
Tony M — Google review
They had a great expedition at times :) The location is very nice and big, easy to get to with the VLT ( Get off at Antônio Carlos and cross the big steep Bridge ) Flat area easy access with wheelchair small coffee shop for a coffee There are many shades around the building, so bring a picnic blanket if you want to spend time in the shade with the family, During the weekend there is always something happening outside, dance classes, skate, inline bikes etc. Close to walk from Marina da glória

Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. This fine arts museum showcases an impressive collection of both national and international masterpieces, with a particular focus on Brazilian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum's architecture draws inspiration from Paris's Louvre, creating an eclectic atmosphere that enhances your visit.
Sunning museum filled with world renowned pieces of fine arts from around the world but with a focus towards highlighting local Brazilian artists who have gained prominence in the recent years. An absolutely extensive collection with art from many different eras and time periods, from 3d sculptures, to modern art selections, to traditional oil paintings. The facilities are relatively modest and only some exhibits have air conditioning which is a great relief if you need a break from the hot Brazilian summers. Restrooms are not clearly marked or easy to navigate but are adequate. Admission price is unbeatable at a price of absolutely free although you do have to store any bags at the coat check. Some special exhibits also require lines and long waits. Waited almost 45 minutes for a special exhibit only to not be very impressed at the small gallery inside.
Victor W — Google review
Interesting collection of imperial and contemporary art. Cost R8 to get in. Well worth it. Contains the largest painting ever commissioned in Brazil. Make sure you ask for a headset guide. It wasn’t offered to me, so I didn’t even know it was an option until too late.

Amazing fine arts' museum. Many galleries showcasing national and international paintings. There is a sculpture gallery and temporary exhibitions as well. What I like the most is the the Battle of Avaí painting which was painted in small parts to make an amazing 600cm x 1100cm mega painting. If you're in Rio, I'm a local guide here. Feel free to get in touch with me through any social media: @DEBOMZAI

Nice museum with many different rooms where can you can find different modern art and classic Brazilian art from 19th and early 20th. If you are in the area, I strongly recommend to pay a visit !
Lorenzo S — Google review
A very neat building in a great part of Rio to explore. The collection itself was not very big or diverse, but they have several worthwhile pieces. Right now they have hashtags beneath a lot of the paintings, which to me was a bit tacky but also pretty funny (things like #selfie under self portraits). There is a small admission fee to enter.

Museu da Chácara do Céu is a captivating museum located in the former residence of a Rio businessman, offering a unique blend of European and Brazilian art. Situated atop Santa Teresa, the museum boasts stunning city views and beautiful gardens dating back to 1876.
Cool private house museum with awesome views. It's mostly just modern art - but has a few historical pieces as well: 18th-19th century Rio landscapes, baroque silver chandeliers, and period furniture. The real gem is a pair of paintings on the top floor by Francisco Muzzi, featuring the only known depiction of Mestre Valentim, the iconic 18th-century Afro-Brazilian architect. 8 reais, free Wednesdays.
Josiah W — Google review
This museum has a beautiful of art collection, with loads of pictures by Candido Portinari. The views from the place are great, one of the best from Santa Tereza. Highly recommended! There is no food there, so prepare yourself before you go. They have parking but it is limited, so if the place is busy, you may need to go somente else to park.
Fernanda S — Google review
A nice modern building, unfortunately, the rooms and most of the collections were closed to the public at the moment. But the park Glória Maria gave a nice surprise to compensate the disappointment. It is just next to the museum.
Jiong C — Google review
It says that the place is only closed on Tuesday but it's actually closed when we went there on Monday. We have encountered similar situation before at the Paço Imperial. The information on the app may cause confusion, better double check it before you go.

A former house of a prominent Brazilian who has a beautiful collection of artworks. You can see how he live there during his time and different style of paintings from his collection. Its like $4 entrance fee.

A small museum with good collection of the contemporary and modern art, located in a beautiful garden to walk around. Reminded me of Nezu Museum in Tokyo with their similar walking path.

Cool Museu:) really shows the culture of brazil but wish not so many floor were closed. Tuesdays free:)

Beautiful, Interactive, and So Worth It! This museum was absolutely beautiful and full of life. It was very interactive and made learning about Brazilian culture so fun and engaging. We explored different genres of art—sculptures, photos, and even physical items we could touch. We got to make music, listen to traditional sounds, and watch powerful videos that brought the culture to life. Every part of the museum had something new and meaningful to experience. Highly recommend if you're in Rio—it’s a must-visit!

Cool museum, astounding view over Rio and Museum of Tomorrow, the museum shows were well presented and interesting. Only problem : the museum only takes a card (no cash) for purchasing tickets. Luckily some nice Italian tourists let me give them $40 Reais to buy two tickets for me.
Emily F — Google review
I definitely recommend the visit to understand a bit of the rich and diverse culture of Rio. As of today there's an exhibition around Funk, abolitionist women, carnival and indigenous language. We absolutely loved it. There's a terrace on the top floor with a lovely view, and a lift for accessibility purposes.
Aleksandra M — Google review
Museum is great. Shame the rude staff. They force you to leave your handbag and then make you wait in a massive queue together with the people entering the museum to pick it up. When you ask for their name they are rude and refuse to speak English just repeat whatever in Portuguese louder

This was quite an interesting museum. It is focused on Brazilian culture and Brazilian art. It is not the fanciest museum we’ve ever been to, but the subject is beautifully presented. It will give you a nice and unique perspective on current and indigenous Brazilian art and culture.

Located just a few steps away from the Museu de Arte do Rio, Café do MAR offers a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the museum. Visitors can savor a delightful selection of treats without leaving the museum premises. The café provides an array of options including cappuccino, pastel de forno de queijo, brownies, pastel de peito de peru com cream cheese, and various cakes such as orange cake.
It’s such a nice Café near the Museum’s entrance. The cappuccino is good, it isn’t too sweet. I also ate “pastel de forno de queijo” and it is very tasteful! My mom ate the brownie, “pastel de peito de peru com cream cheese” and today’s cake (it was an orange cake) and she really enjoyed them all. There are many vegetarian options.

Average food experience (we took the zucchini lasagne and the cannoli). And quite expensive for such an average dishes. But nice ambient just to rest before going to museum and also really nice staff :). Maybe for only some coffee and a cake, it would be better experience.

I ordered the salmon salad. The greens were fresh and crisp, tomatoes juicy and sweet, goat cheese delicious. The salmon was rotten. It was one of the most disgusting things I've put in my mouth in years. I imediately spit it out. I told the staff. They didn't seem to care. The manager was clearly bothered by the fact that some one would complain about being served garbage on what would otherwise have been a delicious salad. They tried to tell me it was smoked but it was clearly cured like gravalox. As a chef for 20 years I know what good fish tastes like and I also know that when you cure old fish it only makes the fish taste worse as it concentrates the flavor of the rancid meat. They refused to do anything about it. I paid because I wasn't looking for a discount, I just wanted them to acknowledge they were serving people food that wasn't safe for consumption. The manager should be fired. His number one job should be making sure the food is safe to eat. Absolutely disgusting.

The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói is a must-visit for art and architecture enthusiasts. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, this iconic modernist building offers panoramic views and an impressive collection of contemporary art.
To be honest, we didn’t come for the art - we came for the architecture. As one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic and celebrated creations, this building doesn’t just house the art; it is THE art. In fact, its sweeping curves and bold presence utterly eclipse whatever hangs on the walls inside. Standing before it, in this breathtaking setting, is a five-star experience - no, beyond five stars. The exhibition within? A mere whisper compared to the thunderous poetry of the structure itself. While the price of admission is more than reasonable, the absence of a functioning e-payment system made for a rather unconventional and even bizarre solution. To get the cash to purchase the tickets, I was advised to buy from the coconut vendor on the street, then ask him to charge “extra” on my credit card in return for cash reals. It was such a first world meets third world situation! Every aspect of the MAC is photogenic. The blazing Rio sun and clear skies helped. We lingered for two hours both on the inside and out. And after that we lingered even further with a meal at the delicious Bistrô MAC with its panoramic view of Guanabara Bay. It was an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

You have to visit MAC of you’re in Niterói/Icarai. What a cool building! And the fact that something as cool as this is from the 90s? Wow… Worth the visit. Free entry on Wednesdays. They have one artist exposition at a time.

Beautiful museum, the building per se is an art piece!!! The views are amazing. The exhibitions were nice, I expected more from this museum to be honest. Permanent collection was nice but quite small. The temporary exhibition regarding costumes from the Carnival, really beautiful. Also, I would love to have a proper exhibition regarding the building per se, the process, construction, and so on, currently there are only a few pictures of the construction that’s it.
Ulises B — Google review
It’s an interesting building with great views, but to call this an “art museum” would be a complete joke. The inside of the building is completely empty and the little art that it does have feels dull, boring, and lacks any creativity. The top floor was also under renovation and restricted access. The staff are also quite rude and they require visitors to store all bags, no matter how small in size, in several lockers they say you’re “obligated” to use. To contrast, the outside of the building is free to walk up to and way more interesting than the museum itself. Calling this an observation deck would be a more appropriate title.
Manatee S — Google review
One of the best locations ever for a modern art museum. The sensuous, modernist, iconic masterpiece by the unparalleled Niemeyer takes full advantage of the wonderful vista of the picture-perfect Rio de Janeiro’s bay in a rare symbiosis of Architecture and Nature. The interior is equally rewarding; the circular - rotunda style echoing Lloyd Wright’s New York’s Guggenheim. You won’t forget the experience.
Carlos O — Google review
The epitome of elegant architecture! The art showcases were beautifully laid out and the museum was very accessible!

Amazing architecture. The art exhibition was beautiful. I loved the proposed walking circuit by the architect. Ticket prices are fair $16 reales per person, you CANT PAY WITH CARD, it’s either purchasing tickets at the reception with cash or online.

(Translated by Google) It's beautiful, but it looks quite abandoned. It's a bit sad to see that a lot of it is missing pieces, from the crockery on the floor, to some of the buildings, to the walls, it seems to have been vandalized. Some of the pieces are still in good condition, but not everything. Be careful! Lots of insects! Bring insect repellent. I was fully dressed, but the mosquitoes found gaps in my clothes and I was very allergic to the bites. (Original) Bonito, porém, parece bem abandonado. Um pouco triste ver que boa parte está faltando pedaços, de louça no piso, em algumas obras, paredes, parece ter sido depredada. Algumas peças permanecem boas, mas nem tudo. Atenção! Muitos insetos! Nestled in the scenic Barra da Tijuca area of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu do Pontal stands as a treasure trove of Brazilian popular art and handicrafts. This private museum boasts an impressive collection of around 8,000 pieces, showcasing the creativity and talent of 20th-century Brazilian artists. Founded by Jacques van de Beuque, this cultural gem is not only significant within Brazil but also recognized globally as a key reference point for anthropological studies.
The guided tour is innovative in the sense that the tour guides sing to you in different Brazilian rhythms. The exhibition space is small but beautifully done. Some pieces are extraordinary, especially the moving ones.

Happened upon a performance in the outdoor space, Carimbo dos Altos, which was a magnificent presentation of an indigenous story from the Amazon region (all in Portugese), so I did my best to understand it!! Then I ventured into the museum which is truly remarkable. The artwork in clay and wood is so compelling, earnest, and beautiful. It is very well presented, with English options via a QR code. The gentlemen at the store entertained my basic Portugese and spoke with me for about 20 minutes, telling me more about the museum, the artists, music and some instruments. I bought a few pieces of art to take with me and wish that I had more time there. I wouldn't miss this museum if I were you!!

It's a lovely place, they are asking for vaccine certificate and following all the COVID guidelines. It's not a museum itself but more a private well curated collection with a great variety, with some pieces from Egypt, China, Europe, etc. The museum was the house of the art collector whom gives the name to the place, so you have an intimate look to her life and her taste in arts. The only thing missing for me is the lack of tags in the pieces, so most of the times you don't know what you are looking to, but the lady there mentioned it was a decision Klabin to keep everything as it was, no tags, no guided visit but a mediated visit.

Not many European tourists come here, as it is a little hidden in the urban natural park Parque da Cidade in the Gavea district. We were welcomed here all the more friendly and openly and started talking - all in one Language mix of Portuguese, English and even a few words in German. (Translated by Google) Visiting the museum was a wonderful experience. The place is incredibly beautiful and integrated into nature. It is interesting to say that my wife and I, who were born and have lived in the city for many years, since we now live in Rio das Ostras, were taken by my sister, who lives in England, to visit the museum. I have nothing but praise for the team of professionals who guide visitors. We had a true history lesson about the city of Rio de Janeiro, because each exhibit we came across provided an incredibly complete narration of the historical fact that was represented there. Congratulations to everyone who makes up the team that looks after and manages the MHC! With your friendliness, kindness and competence, you bring the history of our city to life! Só elogios à equipe de profissionais que ciceroneiam os visitantes. Beautiful place, exemplary for the extraordinary high artistic level of Rio, especially in the south-west. This is not just a walk in - look around - walk out type of place. There's much thought that goes into the exhibits, and the use of the space. Also, the ladies I spoke to there were incredibly helpful, much more so than you should have to expect. Cherry on the cake was a conversation with the current featured artist, Bruno Vilela, who's excellent collection surprises and makes you think. Well worth a visit!

(Translated by Google) I took the makeup course offered on the website, and it was the worst experience I've ever had. I was treated as if they were doing me a favor, and I was even told that the course was free because the R$450.00 I paid was used to buy products. The makeup looked horrible (I have a photo) to the point that I had to remove it before leaving. When I told them that I lived abroad and wasn't going to buy all the products (I spent a bit more than R$600) because they were cheaper here, I was also told that it would have been easier if I had done it here, because the course is supposed to encourage people to buy all the products. I was totally frustrated.
