Art museum
Museums
The Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói is a must-visit for art and architecture enthusiasts. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, this iconic modernist building offers panoramic views and an impressive collection of contemporary art.
To be honest, we didn’t come for the art - we came for the architecture. As one of Oscar Niemeyer’s most iconic and celebrated creations, this building doesn’t just house the art; it is THE art. In fact, its sweeping curves and bold presence utterly eclipse whatever hangs on the walls inside. Standing before it, in this breathtaking setting, is a five-star experience - no, beyond five stars. The exhibition within? A mere whisper compared to the thunderous poetry of the structure itself. While the price of admission is more than reasonable, the absence of a functioning e-payment system made for a rather unconventional and even bizarre solution. To get the cash to purchase the tickets, I was advised to buy from the coconut vendor on the street, then ask him to charge “extra” on my credit card in return for cash reals. It was such a first world meets third world situation! Every aspect of the MAC is photogenic. The blazing Rio sun and clear skies helped. We lingered for two hours both on the inside and out. And after that we lingered even further with a meal at the delicious Bistrô MAC with its panoramic view of Guanabara Bay. It was an amazing way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
Eddie C — Google review
You have to visit MAC of you’re in Niterói/Icarai. What a cool building! And the fact that something as cool as this is from the 90s? Wow… Worth the visit. Free entry on Wednesdays. They have one artist exposition at a time.
Jeremy M — Google review
Beautiful museum, the building per se is an art piece!!! The views are amazing. The exhibitions were nice, I expected more from this museum to be honest. Permanent collection was nice but quite small. The temporary exhibition regarding costumes from the Carnival, really beautiful. Also, I would love to have a proper exhibition regarding the building per se, the process, construction, and so on, currently there are only a few pictures of the construction that’s it.
Ulises B — Google review
It’s an interesting building with great views, but to call this an “art museum” would be a complete joke. The inside of the building is completely empty and the little art that it does have feels dull, boring, and lacks any creativity. The top floor was also under renovation and restricted access. The staff are also quite rude and they require visitors to store all bags, no matter how small in size, in several lockers they say you’re “obligated” to use. To contrast, the outside of the building is free to walk up to and way more interesting than the museum itself. Calling this an observation deck would be a more appropriate title.
Manatee S — Google review
One of the best locations ever for a modern art museum. The sensuous, modernist, iconic masterpiece by the unparalleled Niemeyer takes full advantage of the wonderful vista of the picture-perfect Rio de Janeiro’s bay in a rare symbiosis of Architecture and Nature. The interior is equally rewarding; the circular - rotunda style echoing Lloyd Wright’s New York’s Guggenheim. You won’t forget the experience.
Carlos O — Google review
The epitome of elegant architecture! The art showcases were beautifully laid out and the museum was very accessible!
Blake R — Google review
Amazing architecture. The art exhibition was beautiful. I loved the proposed walking circuit by the architect. Ticket prices are fair $16 reales per person, you CANT PAY WITH CARD, it’s either purchasing tickets at the reception with cash or online.

The Oscar Niemeyer building and location are very special. We also enjoyed a delicious light lunch at the restaurant there. We then spent 3 hours on the Praia Boa Viagem with the locals. Thoroughly enjoyed this day. We also caught the ferry back to Rio.

Cathedral
Catholic church
The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated in 1976, is a distinctive modern Catholic cathedral with a pyramid-like structure. Its exterior, resembling a concrete beehive, stands out among the traditional baroque architecture of Rio de Janeiro. Inside, the spacious interior can accommodate over 20,000 people and features four stunning stained-glass windows that fill the space with colorful light.
The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro is a striking and awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece that perfectly blends modern design with spiritual serenity. Unlike traditional cathedrals, its conical, fortress-like structure immediately captures attention, rising dramatically against the city skyline. The unique shape symbolizes a sacred mountain, creating a sense of grandeur even before entering. Inside, the cathedral is equally breathtaking. The vast open space, soaring ceilings, and the stunning stained-glass windows that stretch from floor to ceiling create a kaleidoscope of light, filling the interior with a serene and almost ethereal atmosphere. The altar and religious artwork are thoughtfully designed, reflecting both reverence and modern elegance. The acoustics are incredible, making any musical performance or mass an unforgettable experience. Visiting the Catedral Metropolitana is more than just sightseeing—it’s a journey of awe, reflection, and admiration for both faith and architectural innovation. It’s a must-see landmark in Rio, offering an inspiring blend of spirituality, culture, and artistic brilliance.
LOUIE Y — Google review
I was mesmerized by Rio de Janeiro Cathedral’s soaring, conical form—the first time I’d encountered such striking geometry in a church. Its hyperboloid structure creates a feeling of being enveloped by light and space. This bold design is rare—reminds me of Brasília’s cathedral and Évry Cathedral in France—making it truly unforgettable.

Wonderful cathedral would of loved to have listened to chior or classical music in there. The stain glass windows are beautiful, a great modern cathedral.

Sept.25: this was one of the many free places we visited in the Lapa area. The Cathedral is in middle of the Lapa area with beautiful multicolored glasses. @Time of visiting it wasn't busy, but when we left, 5 big tourist busses arrived. @Premises is a copy of the Jezus statue, as well as a big gigantic tower which could be climbed. All are very photogenic. There are many bars, restaurants & great impressive other buildings nearby.
Petra ( — Google review
A stunning cathedral. Rio de Janeiro’s Saint Sebastian Cathedral is an impressive modern building in downtown Rio. It is dedicated to the saint Sebastian, who has some statues on the inside. The whole structure is an awesome testament by Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca to ancient Mayan pyramids. The coloured windows are fantastic. The massive building’s clear structure inspires humility and introspection.
Siegfried B — Google review
One of the most unique cathedrals I've visited in shape and interior design. Definitely not like the majority you will find in Europe. Worth stopping in to see it and enjoy it's different structure.
Jozef W — Google review
The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião was one of the most awe-inspiring stops during my day trip in Rio de Janeiro. From the outside, its unique, modernist design immediately grabs your attention—unlike any cathedral I’ve ever seen. The massive conical structure stands tall and proud in the heart of the city, blending bold architecture with spiritual serenity. Stepping inside was truly breathtaking. The towering stained-glass windows reaching up to the dome fill the space with vibrant colors and an almost otherworldly glow. The vast interior, with its minimalist design and peaceful ambiance, invites you to pause and reflect. It's a powerful contrast to the energetic vibe of the city outside. Apart from its architectural beauty, the cathedral also has a lovely little gift shop where we picked up a few meaningful souvenirs. From religious items to locally crafted mementos, the shop had a thoughtful selection that made it easy to take a piece of this spiritual and cultural experience home with us. The Catedral Metropolitana is not just a religious site—it's a symbol of Rio’s blend of modernity, faith, and creativity. Whether you're into architecture, history, spirituality, or simply looking for a quiet moment in the city, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended to anyone exploring Rio de Janeiro!

Cidade das Artes is a massive, state-of-the-art cultural complex in Rio de Janeiro's Barra da Tijuca suburb. Designed by renowned architect Christian de Portzamparc, the seven-story building houses the largest musical theater in South America and features numerous exhibition spaces showcasing Brazilian artists' work. With 97 thousand square meters of infrastructure, it offers a wide range of artistic expressions including music, theater, film, dance, and visual arts.
It have a very nice theater, the biggest lego city scale model of Rio de Janeiro, a library and a nice Cafe restaurant.
Juan S — Google review
The place is nice although we were a bit cold sitting outside for Jurassic safari 2. We were also mislead about the spoken portion and expected and exposition but instead we got a theater show that features only Portuguese speaking. Dont know if i would recommend going here.
Frederik A — Google review
An astonishing public apparatus, that is badly underutilized, not very central and costed tons of public money to build, but despite that, it's a gorgeous place for the arts to thrive, with the most beautiful and modern concert hall in the city. This place is equiped with several rehearsal rooms, theaters, concert halls and art installations. This is the kind of place that should be spread all over the city, working as part of a large cultural and educational system, but instead of that, since we're in Brazil, this place had a huge role in money laundry and big contracts with construction companies. This is being written in 2019, and everything is still pretty neat and tidy. I just hope that in the future it stays like this, with the governors giving Cidade das Artes the attention and budget that it needs to actually work as this magnificent apparatus that was promised to be, so that the arts can actually thrive as initially promised.
Bruno P — Google review
As the new home of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (Brazilian Symphony Orchestra) and a main center for music, the Cidade das Artes is the largest modern concert hall in South America, with 1,780 seats. The complex spans approximately 90 thousand square metres and also features a chamber music hall, three theatres, and 12 rehearsal rooms. The terrace offers panoramic views of the neighbourhood of Barra da Tijuca. The building was designed by the French architect Christian de Portzamparc and construction was funded by the city of Rio de Janeiro.

This place is spectacular. Absolutely incredible spaces.

This theatre and music hall is a really different place in the city. Huge, with contemporary architecture, you'll not find a place like this in Rio. The theatre is beautiful and modern. But all the distances are far and it's a little isolated. There's parking area (the price is not too high) but you can get there by bus or BRT if you stop on Alvorada Terminal Station (you will wall almost the same as the parking area to reach the building.

Monuments & Statues
Christ the Redeemer is a colossal 30-meter-tall statue of Jesus Christ, situated on top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. This iconic monument, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The statue, with its outstretched arms, is made of concrete and adorned with soapstone mosaic tiles. It serves as a religious and cultural symbol for the warm and welcoming Brazilian people.
This is a marvelous monument to visit in Rio. Truly iconic. The train ride was short yet enjoyable. The high altitude may cause you chills, so it is best to carry a light jacket (it was a windy and chilly day for us), particularly if you are visiting in the afternoon. The evening views from the top are equally mesmerizing! You wish to take the right side of the train on your way up and left on the way down to best sights on the way up and down. We prefer the after slot as we could enjoy both sunset and daytime (boarding around 3 pm and coming back after 6). Booking/reservation your tickets ahead/online is the best idea. Unfortunately the toilets are not clean up at the site (so best to use the ones at the station, which is very well maintained) and the cafe serves very overpriced and bad quality food (best to avoid that). So, plan accordingly. Hope you enjoy your visit as well!
Sajed S — Google review
Absolutely stunning. From the tram to the top, walking up the rest of the way and enjoying the incredible views at the top. Yes it is very busy and it probably will be all day every day, so just be prepared! It is still well worth the trip. Everything about it was so much fun. Be prepared to lie down on the floor to get good photos!! You also get to see monkeys, helicopters, paragliders and much more. Also the ice cream is delicious at the top. Obviously everything is well over priced whilst up there!

Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is one of those magical experiences that touch your heart. The moment you see the statue standing high above the city, surrounded by clouds and sunlight, it feels truly special. The view from the top of Corcovado is breathtaking the ocean, the mountains, and the city below all blend into one stunning panorama. There’s something peaceful and spiritual about being up there. Even with many visitors around, you can still feel a deep sense of calm and awe. The train ride through the lush forest adds to the experience, making the journey as beautiful as the destination. It’s a place that makes you feel grateful, inspired, and connected to nature, to faith, and to life itself. An absolute must-visit when in Rio.
Lg G — Google review
A fullfilment of one of my traveling dreams was to visit the statue and admire the views over the city. Might be crowded from time to time but with some spare time you'll get to experience everything easily with one visit. Pre-purchased tickets recommended and can be changed for instance due to weather conditions.
Juho Ä — Google review
It’s unthinkable to visit Rio without getting up close to this iconic statue. Access via the inclined tramway, a few steps and an escalator is easy. It was very misty when I visited and so not too crowded. Thankfully the mist lifted enough to see this beautiful statue, although views of the city remained really limited. The little chapel built into the rear of the statue was a pleasant surprise. I can’t begin to imagine how crowded it must get on a clear day, but you must visit.
David S — Google review
There’s literally nothing to say about this attraction other than wow. The feeling you get seeing something in person after seeing it so many times on TV is amazing. I’m surprised how organised they are. They have lift an escalators on top of the mountain. They are plenty of shops and food court. They do daily shows like Samba dancing.
Mohammed M — Google review
An extraordinary wonder of the world. With a convenient short train ride to the top and immense popularity among crowds, it offers spectacular views, is inhabited by monkeys in the area, and boasts an amazing statue and a lovely church, representing an iconic aspect of Rio that is not to be missed.
Greg S — Google review
Great view from the top. We had an organised tour and got u quickly. Extremely busy on the top even still. Would be nice to hike up if you have the time in Rio. 4 days is not enough to see all of Rio.

Parque Lage is a charming park located near the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The park features wooded trails, English-style gardens with touches of British romanticism, including a Baroque folly and grotto. The centerpiece of the park is an Italianate villa that now houses a visual arts school and a delightful cafe, making it a perfect spot for breakfast or afternoon tea.
I really loved this place as a park. The building that houses the restaurant is seriously impressive and I could snap pictures of it all day. I’d actually like to see if they do a tour and explain the history. The restaurant inside however I wasn’t too impressed with the my food was kinda bad. I don’t regret going, it was a fantastic experience, but the food from street vendors was better. The park was amazing. Tons of extra stuff to see and explore in there
Brandon T — Google review
Parque Lage in Rio felt like a hidden paradise — lush gardens, tall palm trees, and that iconic mansion with the view of Christ the Redeemer rising behind it. I loved wandering the quiet trails and taking photos by the pool. It’s the kind of place where nature, art, and peace beautifully come together.
Esrf G — Google review
Because this place is a major tourist attraction, come prepared to wait in line for a long time in order to get a picture. There is a lack of organization that made it a little difficult but the view of Cristo was incredible. We were told that the food was not the best so we decided to skip eating there but the 2 hour wait for pictures was definitely worth it. There was slight cloud coverage so we had to be patient but once it revealed itself, it was truly a sight to see. Definitely be prepared to stand in line for a least an hour regardless what day you go, and either bring a hat or umbrella and waters (or you can purchase some there) because it gets extremely hot.

Parque Lage is a stunning park nestled within Tijuca National Park, offering a lush tropical forest experience right in the heart of Rio. It features a scenic trail that leads up to Corcovado Mountain and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, especially birds and playful monkeys like marmosets and capuchins. Peaceful, beautiful, and rich in biodiversity, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Rio’s natural side.

Beautiful free park, with a log of birds and monkeys to watch. It has some bulging inside that gives it a totally magic sensation
Tony V — Google review
Nice family park. Nice palace, but would like more info on its history. People posing for selfies are very inconsiderate of others. How many ways can one pose? Clean bathrooms at entrance. Looks like nice restaurant inside the palace. There is a food vendor next to the palace. No tickets necessary. It is a good place for more views of the Redeemer.
Paul — Google review
Parque Lage is a true gem in Rio de Janeiro and an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of nature, history, and culture in the heart of the city. Nestled at the foot of Corcovado Mountain, this park offers a peaceful escape from the urban bustle, surrounded by lush Atlantic rainforest where you might spot monkeys, toucans, and a variety of exotic plants. The highlight of Parque Lage is its stunning neo-Romanesque mansion, which now houses the Escola de Artes Visuais (School of Visual Arts). The mansion’s elegant architecture, complete with a picturesque courtyard and pool, is a perfect backdrop for photos and often hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. The on-site Plage Café is a fantastic spot to relax with a coffee or breakfast, offering views of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance. Wandering through the park, you’ll find beautifully landscaped gardens inspired by European designs, tranquil lakes, charming bridges, and even an enchanting grotto with stalactites and stalagmites. For adventure seekers, Parque Lage is also the starting point for the scenic hiking trail up to Christ the Redeemer, providing a unique perspective of Rio’s natural beauty. Entry is free, making it accessible to everyone. Whether you’re interested in art, photography, a leisurely stroll, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere, Parque Lage will leave you enchanted. Highly recommended for families, couples, and solo travelers alike-don’t miss this magical corner of Rio de Janeiro.

The Royal Portuguese Reading Room is a stunning library in Neo-Manueline style, featuring ornate decor and an extensive collection of volumes by Portuguese authors. It is considered one of the most beautiful libraries in the world and offers a rich cultural experience for visitors. The three-story-tall bookshelves, intricate architecture, dramatic stained-glass dome, and sparkling chandelier create an enchanting atmosphere for avid readers to relax with a book.
The Portuguese Royal Library in Rio de Janeiro is an absolute treasure and one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The moment you walk in, you’re instantly captivated by its grandeur and atmosphere. Towering shelves, carved wooden details, soft lighting — it truly feels like stepping into a fairy tale or a historical film. Even if you’re not a book lover, this place is worth visiting for its architecture, energy, and sense of history. You’ll want to stay longer, take in every detail, breathe in the scent of old books, and simply enjoy the peacefulness. An absolutely magical place — a must-visit in Rio!
Nika S — Google review
One of the most beautiful libraries I’ve seen! It’s free and not too many people. You just walk in to the main room and that’s it. Take your time to appreciate all the little details in the architecture.

Amazing library showcasing Brazil's rich history, this is definitely one of the most impressive places in Rio. Interestingly, the entrance to the library itself is absolutely free. In it, you are transported to another era ... It is definitely worth promoting, because most tourists have not heard of it.

If you’re a book lover this is a must visit if you’re in Rio. This book lovers dream houses over 350,000 volumes including rare pieces from the 16th to 18th centuries. Come early as it gets super busy. The gothic architecture is visual overload and you could spend over an hour here just taking in the atmosphere. Only open on weekdays.

The place is iconic and is worthy the visit. One of the most beautiful libraries I have ever been. Because is in the centre of Rio is safer to go by Uber. The staff could be more friendly but the woman working there just look unhappy. But we can’t do anything with those unhappy people. I highly recommend this stunning place.

Thoroughly disappointing. On our return from lovely Ubatuba (thank you, Charles, for the loan of your fabulous beach house and extremely attentive staff!) I got conned into going here by a bibliofile friend of Ursula’s. the place was crowded and really there is nothing to see of value. I was gasping for a drink too.

If you haven't yet had the chance to visit this library, I highly recommend making it a priority during your time in Rio. This incredible place is truly a sight to behold, with a soaring ceiling and an endless sea of vibrantly colored books that surround you. It's nothing short of amazing! However, I must caution that the area in which the library is located can be a bit rough. While I wouldn't discourage anyone from visiting, it's essential to exercise extra caution and be aware of your surroundings. All things considered, the library is an absolute must-visit for book lovers and anyone who appreciates stunning architecture and design. If you have the opportunity to see it in person, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Copacabana Beach is an iconic 2.2-mile stretch of sandy coastline with a bustling promenade, food kiosks, and hotels. The beach extends for about 4km and offers a lively atmosphere with soccer players, locals, and tourists enjoying caipirinhas at the kiosks. Visitors can also witness kids showcasing their soccer skills and beach vendors selling various items. It's recommended to check the water quality before swimming due to occasional contamination after heavy rainfall.
Copacabana Beach is iconic! Stunning views, soft sand, and lively atmosphere make it a must-visit. Great for a swim, relaxing, or enjoying local street food. Vendors are friendly, and the vibe is electric, especially at sunset. Safe if you stay aware. An unforgettable Rio experience!

By far the best beach in the refion. It's lively both at day and night. Free showers are also up for grabs and there are several spots where you can rent an umbrella and/or chairs for a fair price.

Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is everything you imagine it to be — and more! The moment you step onto the soft golden sand, you can feel the vibrant energy that makes this beach world-famous. The stunning curve of the coastline, framed by lush green hills and the rhythmic sound of the Atlantic waves, creates a picture-perfect scene that feels straight out of a postcard. What makes Copacabana so special is the unique blend of relaxation and excitement. In the mornings, it’s peaceful and ideal for a refreshing swim or a quiet walk along the promenade. As the day goes on, the beach comes alive with locals playing volleyball and football, vendors selling refreshing coconut water, and musicians adding a joyful samba rhythm to the air. The iconic black-and-white wave-patterned boardwalk is another highlight — perfect for strolling, cycling, or simply soaking in the view of the sea and city skyline. There are plenty of beachfront cafés and kiosks where you can enjoy delicious Brazilian snacks and fresh juices while watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink. Copacabana Beach isn’t just a place — it’s an experience of Rio’s soul: warm, lively, and unforgettable. Whether you go to relax, meet people, or simply admire the breathtaking scenery, it’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Rio — Copacabana is pure magic. 🇧🇷✨

Sept.25: We went to the famous Copacabana Beach. We taught it would be crowded as it was weekend, however this wasn't the case. There were a lot of local vendors selling all kinds of stuff & many different food, icecreams & drinks. Some brought a complete umbrella with bikinis & thongs as well as really nice looking grilled big scampis (we didn't try as we didn't know how long they were exposed to sun, etc.) & many more. As we need to get the Copacabana beach vipe, we bought a 700ML freshly pressed lime caipirinha. Delicious, but with the sun & almost on an empty stomach; I got hit very fast. In the far we saw Christ the Redeemer (big, famous Jezus statue of 30 m height on a hill), we hope to visit one of these days.

Here's a good review of Copacabana beach: Copacabana is more than just a beach; it's the vibrant, beating heart of Rio de Janeiro. The moment you step onto its famous wave-patterned promenade, you feel an electric energy. The 4km stretch of sand is a democratic playground for everyone—you'll see intense games of footvolley, locals sunbathing, and tourists sipping água de coco from the countless kiosks. The view is spectacular, with the curving bay framed by Sugarloaf Mountain on one end. It’s a must-see for its sheer iconic status and incredible people-watching, capturing the city's lively spirit perfectly.

One of the famous beaches in the world was worth visiting. A fairly clean that has many things to offer - from food stalls to watching people play volleyball, soccer and other games, enjoying a nice drink, snacks and food. A good place to get your morning or afternoon walk/run as well. A safe place compared to some parts of Rio. From good to excellent hotels across the beach.

This is really a world class beach with a party ambiance. The waves could get a bit strong (could knock your glasses or sunglasses off so do have a clip or tie). The sand is fine and white. The view of the mountains add to the zen.

Beautiful, Interactive, and So Worth It! This museum was absolutely beautiful and full of life. It was very interactive and made learning about Brazilian culture so fun and engaging. We explored different genres of art—sculptures, photos, and even physical items we could touch. We got to make music, listen to traditional sounds, and watch powerful videos that brought the culture to life. Every part of the museum had something new and meaningful to experience. Highly recommend if you're in Rio—it’s a must-visit!

Ilha Fiscal is a must-visit destination in Rio de Janeiro, offering guided tours of an ornate 19th-century palace with a tower and museum exhibits. The island has historical significance as it was conquered by the Portuguese in the 16th century. It also features churches like Igreja Nossa Senhora da Penha and Igreja Nossa Senhora de Bonsucesso, both holding rich historical and architectural value.
There is not much to visit inside, only three rooms. You cannot go up to the upper floors. What is worth it is the entire exterior and the panorama it offers. A wonderful view.

Highly recommend visiting Ilha Fiscal. It’s a palace where was organized the last party of the Imperium in November 1889. Architecture is beautiful, and the explanations of the tour guide are interesting. When I went they did it only in Portuguese though. The trip takes less than 2 hours including the boat trip to the island.

There is no boat trip available now, they board you on three buses and give a ride there. You can only visit three small rooms downstairs the castle. Disappointing.

Sugarloaf Mountain, a 396m-tall peak on a peninsula with sweeping views and accessible by cableway, is one of the most iconic rocks in the world. It offers breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro from its peak and is accessible by a thrilling glass-walled cable car journey. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an Instagram-worthy breakfast at Parque Gloria Maria with views of Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) offers one of the most spectacular views in Rio de Janeiro! The cable car ride to the top is smooth and exciting, revealing stunning panoramas of the city, Copacabana beach, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance. At sunset, the view is absolutely magical. The mountain itself is a natural wonder, perfect for photos and unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a nature lover or sightseeing adventurer, this is a must-visit landmark in Brazil. Highly recommended!
Arto L — Google review
The most spectacular place in Rio, highly recommended. Sugar Loaf Mountain has a 360-degree view, unlike Corcovado with a limited viewpoint. Sugar Loaf offers a 360-degree view. You can see the Santos Dumont Intl. Airport and runway, the bridge to Niteroi, the beaches and neighborhoods of Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Leme and Flamengo. Your photos with such a background will be excellent. There is a cafe at the top where you can see the magnificent Copacabana.
Dimo — Google review
One of the places you must visit as a tourist in Rio. The journey to the peak is in two stages, both via cable cars. The queues move quickly and the journeys are smooth. Preferential access is available for wheelchair users. The primary reason for visiting is the views, although my visit was on a very misty day and opportunities were limited. There are plenty of toilets and places for refreshments. Also upmarket souvenir stalls. Still worth visiting on a misty day!
David S — Google review
Very good attraction. It gets really busy so be prepared to be pushing and shoving. Everybody is trying to get the best spot to record the videos. They do have nice foods and souvenir shop on top of the mountain. There is always entertainment going on like live music.

Sugarloaf in Rio offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, beaches, and mountains, absolutely worth the visit. The cable car ride is smooth and scenic. It can get very crowded, especially during peak hours, so try to go early or on a weekday. There are a few shops and places to grab a snack at the top, but prices are a bit high. Still, the overall experience is unforgettable and a must-do while in Rio!
Russo G — Google review
The lines move fairly quickly and there are great views. You take two different cable cars to get to the top and you have a wristband with a QR code that you will repeatedly scan to go up and then back down in the cable cars. Definitely worth it for the views alone.
Heather S — Google review
We came with a group of six, the weather wasn’t the best to be honest. It was about 18° cloudy with a little bit of rain. There was no line probably because of that. However, we got our tickets pretty quickly on our way to the top. Everything was efficient and smooth, no complaints. I would do it again. Actually probably not. This is not something you do multiple times. Lol
Ebruhh K — Google review
The cable cars for the sugarloaf start from the Parque bondinho spot. There is a stopover at another mountain before you reach here. I recommend the place for stunning views of the city. You can also see the Cristo far away. On a nice and sunny day,Pão de Azuçar is the best choice. The name of the mountain comes from the Portuguese who used to get Sugar being shipped in containers which looked similar in shape of the mountains. This was narrated by our guide and not sure about the authenticity.

Confeitaria Colombo is a historic café-restaurant located in downtown Rio, offering a glimpse into the city's 'golden age.' The elegant setting features ornate chandeliers and jacaranda wood mirrors, creating an opulent atmosphere for breakfasts, brunches, and afternoon teas. This century-old establishment was once the center of social gatherings and political intrigue during Rio's belle epoque era.
Enjoyed a nice break on a rainy day. Waited 20 minutes to get in. Shared a ham and cheese sandwich so that we could order dessert!! Too full to finish desserts. Beautiful place!

Very beautiful place, it reeks history, but very full and loud, it doesn't let you enjoy the meal! I recommend you to order only the pastry if not you will wait a lot! The food is 7/10 and desserts 10/10 (the flan is really creamy and delicious)
Juan G — Google review
We chose the restaurant thanks to recommendations, but it was an extremely bad experience for us. Terrible attitude of the staff, catastrophic conditions of seating comfort, broken chairs, a lot of noise, a mess on the floor. Despite repeated requests to clean the table, we had to clean it ourselves. We spent almost an hour of our vacation here waiting for a table. Despite the name order of the guests, the staff let other guests who had passed us in, the staff told us curtly that they had a reservation. We did not see any information about reservations on the tables. They all passed us in several times, despite the fact that we had a reservation card. Very worried, we got up and left, preferring not to ruin our vacation. We do not recommend a visit, it has nothing to do with a gastronomic, relaxing and relaxing experience. Disappointing waste of time.
Peter B — Google review
Overhyped. Looking deeper into what it offers beyond the appearances, it’s nothing worth visiting again in my opinion. Yes, waiters wearing a tie, and the long queue might make you think it will be a special experience for the prices you’ll be charged. Unfortunately not, food is just average, waiters don’t speak much else other than Portuguese, with no awareness of when to serve what’s being ordered. They will deliver the food as soon as it’s ready. So we got the coffee and eclair served before the main dishes. I don’t who eats in this way but that’s what happens if you order everything at the same time in this place. The worst part is that the food is not even freshly prepared. For example, the beirut pita sandwich with fillet mignon, eggs and salad is reheated. The result is a bland and soggy sandwich…disappointing. The eclair was not fresh either. The only things we found to be good were the carpaccio and the coffee. Before paying they’ll parade a basket full of sweets and chocolate in the hope they’ll get you to buy more stuff And when you’re finally about to step out, you’ll be asked for 60r$ for a printed photograph..yeah, that trick they pull off at the beginning once you got past the queue. I don’t know what makes them think this is what makes clients enjoy their time in this place.
Alexandru I — Google review
This is the pre-eminent coffee house to experience when wandering the historic heart of Rio de Janeiro’s Centro district. With a legacy spanning over 130 years, it has long been the cherished gathering place of Brazil’s literary giants, visionary artists, sharp-witted intellectuals, elegant socialites, and influential politicians. Step inside and you’re instantly wrapped in old-world charm and cultural reverie - if only these walls could talk, they’d whisper secrets of revolutions, romances, and masterpieces born over a steaming cup of cappuccino and a piece of their scrumptious Pastel de Belém. In reality, it’s far less mystical, mythical, or romantic. Thanks to its fame, a queue snakes out front well before the shutters roll up at 11:00 sharp. Then comes the mad dash - some scramble upstairs for a quieter perch, others cling to the ground floor for the hustle and bustle. Orders are placed through an e-menu (hardly charming), but redemption comes in the form of crisp uniforms and waiters starched to perfection serving the food on real China and silverware. A trip to Colombo isn’t just about the food - fortunately - because when it comes to culinary excitement, it’s more middling than memorable. Go for the history, the charm, the chaos… just don’t arrive hungry for greatness.

Maracanã, also known as Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho, is a legendary stadium in Rio De Janeiro and the largest in Brazil. With a seating capacity of around 78,500 fans, it has hosted Olympic games and significant international sporting events. The construction involved renowned architects such as Waldir Ramos and Miguel Feldman. A visit to Maracanã is a must for soccer enthusiasts visiting Rio De Janeiro.
Immersive experience, this place is oozing passion and history. The tour is interesting and not too long so it keeps the attention of the younger kids too. You can buy additional activities such as goal kicks, holding up team flag at the stadium and have a picture with a trophy. The kick is worth it, the picture with the flag seems unnecessary, as you can just take a photo yourself that is almost as good. Everyone is friendly. The wait for the goal kick is a littlebit longer than it should be.

It was extremely easy and fast to get tickets for a game that day, we went to the ticket office 1 and got the tickets. We got to the stadium with 2 and a half hours early and it was great and easy since we were some of the first to go in. The seats are first come first serve so it was great and we got amazing seats on one of the first rows. There is no great food there, only snacks like chips and popcorn. But overall it was a great experience and 100% will do next time I visit rio.

What an intense and fun experience! It's open seating so if you want center, be there early. The street vendors were great for grabbing snacks and drinks before the game. The prices for beer were decent inside as well. Get ready to stand as these fans are passionate and fun. Growing up watching legends play at Maracanã, visiting this iconic stadium was a dream come true. The atmosphere is electric, and being in a place filled with so much football history is unforgettable. The tour is well-organized, giving great insight into Brazil’s deep passion for the sport. Walking through the tunnel and standing pitch-side gave me chills. If you love football, Maracanã is a must-visit. Truly one of the world’s great stadiums!

A must for every football fan. The tour organization is not the best compared to other stadiums guided tours in South America like El Monumental and La Bombonera. The extra tours do not worth it unless you are a big fan of any of the teams. On regard extra activities the Pele's museum is the only that worth it, but quite expensive and should be included on stadium tour.
Luis D — Google review
Maracanã is always fun; full or empty. It feels a bit strange to walk into the Maracanã today; it looks like a 'mini Maracanã.' I frequented the stadium between 1998 and 2008, and it seemed much bigger then. But as I said, it is fun—don't miss the opportunity to go if you get the chance!"

Visiting Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro is an unforgettable experience for any sports or culture enthusiast. As one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world, Maracanã embodies the passion and spirit of Brazilian soccer. From the moment you approach its grand structure, you can feel the history—this is where legends like Pelé, Zico, and Ronaldo made their mark. The guided tour is well-organized, offering fascinating insights into Brazil’s football legacy, from World Cup moments to local club rivalries. Walking through the players’ tunnel and stepping onto the edge of the pitch feels almost sacred. The museum displays trophies, jerseys, and photographs that beautifully capture decades of glory and heartbreak. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, making the visit engaging even for those who aren’t huge football fans. The stadium itself is clean, accessible, and safe, with plenty of photo opportunities and a small café for refreshments. If you can, attend a live match—especially a Flamengo or Fluminense game—because the electric energy of 70,000 fans chanting and waving flags is unlike anything else in the world. Maracanã isn’t just a sports venue; it’s a living monument to Brazil’s national pride and love for the beautiful game.

The architectural crown jewel of Rio de Janeiro. Nothing comes close to compare to the opulence and magnificence of the Theatro Municipal! Indubitably one of the most gorgeous opera houses in the world, matched only by places like the Palais Garnier in Paris, or Bayreuth in Germany.

My recent visit to the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro to see the opera "Pérola" was a truly enchanting experience. From the moment I stepped into the majestic lobby, I was transported to a bygone era of elegance and grandeur. The architecture of the theater is simply breathtaking, with its intricate details and opulent decor creating a sense of awe and anticipation. The performance of "Pérola" itself was a masterpiece. The orchestra was phenomenal, filling the hall with a rich and powerful sound that resonated with every note. The singers were exceptional, delivering their complex arias with a passion and skill that captivated the entire audience. The staging was beautiful, with stunning costumes and clever use of lighting that enhanced the dramatic storytelling. What I found particularly impressive was the way the entire production came together so seamlessly. The collaboration between the musicians, singers, and technical crew was flawless, resulting in a performance that was both emotionally moving and technically brilliant. The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is more than just a venue; it is a cultural landmark that continues to uphold the highest standards of artistic excellence. Attending a performance here is not just an evening out; it's an opportunity to witness world-class artistry in a truly magnificent setting. I highly recommend anyone visiting Rio to check their schedule and experience the magic for themselves. It was a night I will not soon forget.

Prainha Beach is a charming and small cove beach located in Rio de Janeiro, offering a rustic surf haven with excellent surfing conditions. However, swimming can be dangerous due to strong currents. The area is free from high-rise buildings, providing a refreshing escape with occasional wooden fish restaurants and ice-cold coconut water stands.
Visiting Prainha was an unforgettable experience. Tucked away in a stunning natural setting, the beach feels like a hidden paradise surrounded by lush green hills and dramatic cliffs. The golden sand and crystal-clear water made it perfect for both relaxing and taking a refreshing swim. The waves were gentle in the morning and more lively in the afternoon, making it a great spot for surfers and swimmers alike. Despite its beauty, Prainha maintained a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere that made the day feel truly special. Whether you’re looking to sunbathe, explore the scenic trails nearby, or just soak in the breathtaking views, Prainha is a must-visit destination that captures the very best of nature’s charm.

The beach itself is amazing, beautiful it blends the city with nature, just by turning around a corner.. Great options to eat seafood based meals and an amazing spot for surfing. Which makes it not so welcoming to swimmers, cause there usually are a lots of waves. Phone reception over there is really bad, so getting an uber to leave the place might be an ordeal, i'd recommend a car, a bycicle or accept the fact that you might have to walk back part of the way before u can get Internet again (but there is a chance that u'll get internet over there).

Great beach in a little cove. Water is great, ground is firm unlike other beaches, and waves are pretty good sized to body surf and swing in.

Mosteiro de São Bento, a 17th-century church adorned with intricate gilded carvings, is a significant site in Rio de Janeiro. Situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Guanabara, it offers protection and pleasant weather. The monastery holds the remains of Brazilian military figures and has historical ties to Italy. Visitors can explore nearby attractions like the National Library and take a walking tour that includes iconic landmarks such as Praca XV de Novembro and the Municipal Theatre.
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, more commonly known as the Mosteiro de São Bento, is a Benedictine abbey located on the Morro de São Bento in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Mannerist style church is a primary example of Portuguese colonial architecture in Rio and the country. Founded in 1590 by monks coming from the state of Bahia, the Benedictine monastery of Rio de  Janeiro was built on the request of the citizens of the recently founded city of São Sebastião themselves. On the very center of the great metropolis, it is held as the place of silence and prayer. The visit is restrict the church of Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, annexed to the Monastery. Details like the art noveau iron gate and the rosewood altars covered in gold are impressive. From Monday to Friday, at 5:15pm, there services with gregorian chants, which also happened on Saturdays, 8am, and on Sundays, at 10am.

I had a very nice experience at the mosteiro de sal bento! The had a service while me and my father visited, authentic voices and great acoustics! The shop was crowded which was fun, a lot of people and happy faces. The garden was well kept and the walk up to the mosteiro was also very pleasant. Great and authentic place to visit if you want some rio history.

It’s hard to believe there could have so much gold in a church. It’s an important expression of the baroque art in a church in the historic centre of Rio de Janeiro. Worths a visit.

Walking along R. Dom Gerardo road, there is a sign above a door for public access but ignore that and go to the vehicle entry as the door apparently doesn't work. The Monastery is unbelievable, amazing carved wood, all in gold leaf. Paintings, statues etc. It's tucked away as well, we almost missed it. Definitely worth a visit and it's free.

Sao Bento Monastery is a Benedictine Abbey in Rio de Janeiro. This is a an excellent example of Portuguese colonial architecture. It was established in 1590. The interior of the church is very ornate and is covered in gold leaf gilding. We visited the Abbey on a Saturday. It was not very crowded. There are very beautiful sculptures and the site is definitely worth visiting.

Historical place
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária is a grand church in Rio de Janeiro, known for its blend of baroque and Renaissance architectural styles. The construction of the church began in 1775 and it stands as one of the main religious monuments in the city. The interior boasts marble detailing and impressive bell towers. Situated in the city center, this 18th-century church is a must-visit for those interested in Brazil's historical architecture.
We were not able to get in as they close the at 4:00 pm so we were told, we were really disappointed. But even the outside is massive and the view from the nearby Pira Olímpica is beautiful. Sometimes we are all given another reason to come back to Rio.

This is the most beautiful church in Rio and a must to visit. Opening hours are always changing and it may not be open at it says here. Covid restrictions have had this church closed for long time. Take a slow walk around and see the different altars and remember to look up for the amazing roof and a cupola that reminds of St. Paul's cathedral in London.
Mats B — Google review
The Candelária church is one of the traditional ones in the city of Rio de Janeiro and one of the main artistic works of the 19th century in Brazil, given the great names involved in its neoclassical decoration. Founded in 1609, it was later expanded, becoming a parish church, and renovated in 1710. However, in the second half of the 18th century, it needed expansion works, whose project was in charge of sergeant Francisco João Roscio, Portuguese military engineer . The work began in 1775 and, still unfinished, was inaugurated in 1811. The front external part and the general design of the plant are very reminiscent of certain Portuguese works, such as the Church of the Convento de Mafra and the Basilica da Estrela. The church is huge, with a beauty that begins at the doors, the floor, the ceiling, the main altar and the others located on the inner sides. Incomparable conservation and cleaning. Put it on the list of places to be visited in Rio de Janeiro. You can't let go.

Nestled in the lush greenery of Brazil, Sítio Roberto Burle Marx is a captivating homage to the legendary landscape architect who transformed the way we perceive nature and design. This former estate showcases an impressive collection of over 3,500 plant species, many of which are native to Brazil and some even named after Burle Marx himself. Spanning 100 acres within the stunning Macico da Pedra Branca region, this site serves as both a museum and a center for botanical studies.
Definitely worth a visit! Had bo idea of Roberto Burle Marx before coming here and now I’m a fan! This garden is a piece of heaven! And the staff is very lovely and helpful! Information here is a bit wrong, their closing hr is not 13:30 it’s actually 15:30. If you have a chance go visit and enjoy this amazing place🤍 Also entrance fee is super cheap only R$10!
Elif B — Google review
The Foundation has done an exceptional job keeping the Burle Marx Estate not just intact, but alive - a breathing monument to biodiversity, conservation, art, culture, and intellect. And still, it’s comes as a surprise that many Cariocas still have no idea who he was. A Brazilian visionary. A Renaissance force. Hiding in plain sight in spite of his iconic design works all over Copacabana and Ipanema. We’d booked the guided weekend tour months in advance through Tripadvisor - surprisingly, one of the few agencies offering this particular excursion. It wasn’t cheap, but every Real proved its worth the moment we left the city behind. The hour-long drive passed through many pleasant suburbs as we arrived at the estate, where the grounds unfolded like a paradisiacal oasis - lush, serene, and impossibly beautiful. Every turn revealed a scene more stunning than the last, a balm for weary eyes. A few minor qualms worth noting—the tablets provided for the English narration were packed with insightful and relevant information, but unfortunately hampered by sluggish connectivity and rather outdated hardware. Then there was the curious case of the gift shop, which charmingly refused all forms of electronic payment, accepting only local cash. Thankfully, our quick-thinking guide turned hero for the day, venturing into town to retrieve cash from an ATM and graciously exchanging it with us. A slight hiccup, but handled with grace.

Such a treasure. My experience was awesome. Super organized place, friendly guide and plenty of place to park the car. The admission price is affordable (R$10 per person) and the conservation of the gardens and buildings was impeccable. The only difficulty I had was to schedule the day of the visit, because the number of visitors is very limited. I recommend this place for tourists and locals and I definetly will go back.

A must see if you’re in the area and want to escape the chaos of Rio. The sítio is more beautiful than the Botanical Garden in my opinion. If you’re a plant collector or botanist, you’ll be in heaven. If you appreciate art, you’ll get a full spectrum of religious, modern, abstract, and architecture. The tour was about two hours but the building on the top of the hill was closed to renovations.

Not to be missed if you are a plant lover and landscape aficionado. Interesting architecture and many works of art by Burle Marx. Make sure to take mosquito repellent. My guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, the tour was in English in the PM. The visit takes about 3 hours, wear comfortable shoes.

Amazing green spaces surrounded by artworks from Brazilian artists. A great place to spend a sunny afternoon away from the chaotic city centre in Rio de Janeiro. First place that I find the employees that are like Americans where they seem to hate their job and just sap your energy by being close to them. But that was just a few of them. Other than that, it was a very wonderful experience. It’s beautifully manicured and laid out expansive and beautiful monkeys and butterflies, Bromeliads and all sorts of cool stuff. Very definitely worth the experience and the fee. With the fee it keeps all of the small annoyances at bay. Thanks for this experience

Very geo centric museum. Lots of overpopulation, human induced decay on the world we live in messaging. I did, however, enjoy just browsing the exhibits. Lots of space for much more though. Some rooms were more of an art exhibit versus museum of tomorrow type of themes I expected. There is a new construction occurring in the rear section of the footprint which will likely help reduce the mayhem of the initial entry to the museum, small cafe, and add more to see. The walkway around the museum is closed due to construction (OCT ‘25)

Incredible view of Rio below. We went on a day that was (sadly) a bit overcast and it was difficult to see all the sights well, although a large sign is posted with an image of how the different landmarks can be seen and identified from this spot. The pavilion is quite beautiful and with a roof that shines in the sun like brass or copper. You can drive up, but we saw many people walking or biking up the steep and winding roads, the trails look awesome and I wished I had budgeted time to hike through some of the dense trees and foliage there in the Tijuca park. I'm sure you will want to do standard hiking prep of good shoes and lots of insect repellent. The view from both Vista Chinesa and from the Emperors table are well worth the time and trouble to get there, spectacular.

The trail up in well trodden but quite steep in places. I took a moto taxi to the Museum of the City of Rio’s History and walked from there. Took about 45mins. Not really a spot for the sunset because the sun goes down behind you (in June) so you get some nice colour behind Pão de Açúcar and o Rendentor. Way down is fun in the dark, take a torch.

There are some gorgeous trails and viewpoints all along the road and this is one of them. Take about half a day to go around all of them, you can spend more time if you want to do the many trails available. The forest area and greenery are worth visiting and the security staff at the gates are very helpful. Keep some water with you as it can get hot and humid in the trail areas depending on when you go. It is also great for biking if you are up for it. There are no rentals available at the spot, so you will have to arrange for these beforehand elsewhere.

Entrance is free and well worth the 30 minutes cab ride from Copacabana.. To see such an ornate structure was refreshing in an age where we are surrounded by technology. Definitely worth the visit

Closed for renovation! I'm probably the only North American in Rio right now who has read about Getulio Vargas and I'm sure I'm the only North American staying in Copacabana right now who really, really, really wanted to see the exact place where Getulio committed suicide! But the museum has been closed for renovation since February 1, 2025. Update this, Google maps! But the museum's garden (park) is open and it's free to visit. Very nice, calm, and green, with friendly ducks/geese. This must be Rio's nicest, cleanest, greenest park!

I loved this place. Note that there is a park next to it. Both the park and the museum are amazing. The architecture and paintings give s complete aesthetic view for amazing pictures. The park on the other hand is brought out of a fairy tail. I fell in love with it, the trees, vegetation, ducks, gooses, etc, the tiny cave it just looks amazing. Perfect for chilling for a while while recovering strength. A definitive must for people who enjoy pictures and peace.

The museum is free and quite small, you can finish in about 20 minutes. Around it, there are nice coffee shops and a park to enjoy.

A stunning and breathtaking place to visit! A real glimpse into the many riches of Brazil. Aldo a great place to learn about Brazil's colonial times as well as when it became a Republic. Very well maintained and guarded. The guards all speak English. The adjoining park is very beautiful and a little oasis from the hustle and bustle of life in the big city of Rio de Janeiro. Definitely worth a visit. You will not be disappointed!

Nestled in the affluent Gavea neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) is a contemporary cultural oasis that beautifully marries modern architecture with lush landscaped gardens designed by the renowned Roberto Burle Marx. Once the residence of banker and diplomat Walter Moreira Salles, this nonprofit organization serves as a vibrant hub for artistic expression, showcasing an impressive array of exhibitions focused on photography, literature, visual arts, and Brazilian music.
It’s free, so not sure how it couldn’t be 5 stars. It Portuguese and has a cafe plus plenty of restrooms. I really enjoyed the photos, but that’s about all they had. Some parts were closed and wasn’t too crowded (maybe because of the rain). I would be curious if they rotate the exhibits. I think they do.

A super lovely place. Feels like a summer house in the past. Contemporary exhibits. The garden is absolutely beautiful, very tropical.

A must-see in Rio! The house itself is worth a visit. Surrounded by Atlantic forest, this modernist gem—designed by Olavo Redig de Campos and Roberto Burle Marx—was home to one of the most prominent Brazilian families both economically and culturally. I really enjoyed the well-curated exhibits: "Conflitos" (a photo exhibit covering political violence in Brazil in 1889-1964), "O pipoqueiro da esquina" (with cartoons by Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Ziraldo), and "#RioUtópico" (with photos of the many utopically-named Rio neighborhoods). Admission is free.

One of my favorite places to go when in Rio de Janeiro. The architecture is beautiful, the garden is so rich and well kept and and the atmosphere is tranquil. This alone is worth the visit. But there are superb exhibitions and a delicious café. I can recommend 100 percent.

Not so popular among tourists but a must-see if you are looking for some peace and quiet. There is a nice small café with some options for breakfast and lunch but service can be rather slow on crowded days and weekends. Don't miss the permanent exhibition with historical photos of the city.

Nestled in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. This fine arts museum showcases an impressive collection of both national and international masterpieces, with a particular focus on Brazilian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum's architecture draws inspiration from Paris's Louvre, creating an eclectic atmosphere that enhances your visit.
Sunning museum filled with world renowned pieces of fine arts from around the world but with a focus towards highlighting local Brazilian artists who have gained prominence in the recent years. An absolutely extensive collection with art from many different eras and time periods, from 3d sculptures, to modern art selections, to traditional oil paintings. The facilities are relatively modest and only some exhibits have air conditioning which is a great relief if you need a break from the hot Brazilian summers. Restrooms are not clearly marked or easy to navigate but are adequate. Admission price is unbeatable at a price of absolutely free although you do have to store any bags at the coat check. Some special exhibits also require lines and long waits. Waited almost 45 minutes for a special exhibit only to not be very impressed at the small gallery inside.

Interesting collection of imperial and contemporary art. Cost R8 to get in. Well worth it. Contains the largest painting ever commissioned in Brazil. Make sure you ask for a headset guide. It wasn’t offered to me, so I didn’t even know it was an option until too late.

Amazing fine arts' museum. Many galleries showcasing national and international paintings. There is a sculpture gallery and temporary exhibitions as well. What I like the most is the the Battle of Avaí painting which was painted in small parts to make an amazing 600cm x 1100cm mega painting. If you're in Rio, I'm a local guide here. A very neat building in a great part of Rio to explore. The collection itself was not very big or diverse, but they have several worthwhile pieces. Right now they have hashtags beneath a lot of the paintings, which to me was a bit tacky but also pretty funny (things like #selfie under self portraits). There is a small admission fee to enter.

Located in Flamengo Park, central Rio de Janeiro, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro is a contemporary art museum housed in a remarkable 1954 Alfonso Eduardo Reidy building. The museum boasts striking architecture and features a water garden, as well as a theater and lecture halls. It holds an impressive collection of 20th-century works, including pieces by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock, Di Vacalcanti, Maria Martins, Henry Moore, and others.
Impressive venue, brutalist building with unique design. We could not visit it on the inside since it was closed for refurbishment. We could only visit a branch of the building with a temporary exhibition, not impressed by those paintings. It's a must see for architecture and brutalism lovers.
Pasquale G — Google review
While wandering through the city, we stumbled upon the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. This striking building immediately caught our attention with its unique architectural style. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the 1950s, the museum is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, featuring open spaces and large glass panels that blend the structure with its surroundings. The entrance was free, and inside we found rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Although I was expecting a permanent collection of modern masterpieces, the temporary exhibits were still an interesting and thought-provoking experience. Overall, MAM Rio is a great stop for art lovers and those curious about Brazil’s modernist architectural heritage. Even if you're not an art enthusiast, the building itself and its location in Flamengo Park make it worth a visit.
MarosH H — Google review
The exhibition is limited but fascinating. It’s architecture is beautiful. It seems that its gardens are unique. Though, since they were preparing a COP30 event, they didn’t give access to the garden. Isn’t this contradictory? Where is the respect to the citizens that had a public space restricted?

A melange of paintings, a few sculptures and, the cherry on top, a modern exhibition based on lights, stroboscopic effects and threads.

Beautiful building. No collection but there was a very interesting exhibition about the great garden designer and landscape architect Burle Marx. The setting is beautiful in the Flamengo Park. Green surroundings. Tram stop nearby (Antonio Carlos) and not far from Lapa on foot.

Very unpleasant experience. From the moment we entered the 2nd floor, we were closely followed by a museum guard, which made us feel uncomfortable. One guard in particular—a young woman with long curly hair—was especially aggressive in both her expression and behavior toward us and our child. They followed us so closely that it felt intimidating. When we stepped onto a standard balcony area overlooking the 1st floor, the same guard approached us and abruptly told us we were not allowed there, speaking in a very rude manner. At that point, we decided to leave immediately. There were no English skills among the staff, and when we couldn’t speak Portuguese, the guard rolled her eyes at us as if insulted. As we left, there was no polite goodbye or thank you for our visit—only another guard following us. The whole atmosphere felt tense and uncomfortable. We had really been looking forward to this visit, but sadly we left upset and disappointed.

Nestled in the historic port district of Saude, Pedra do Sal is a vibrant plaza that pulses with life and culture. Known as the birthplace of samba, this lively spot comes alive every Monday and Friday night when locals and visitors gather for spirited Roda do Samba sessions. The atmosphere is electric as musicians take center stage while enthusiastic crowds join in song, all while enjoying refreshing drinks from rustic stands.
An Amazing experience! A spot where samba truly comes to life! The energy is unmatched, with live music and dancing all around—especially on Mondays and Fridays when it gets packed. Great drinks and snacks, but be ready for the crowd. For a quieter experience, visit on a different day. English isn’t widely spoken, so a tour guide is helpful if no guide just dance it away . Keep it simple with a small bag!
Monique C — Google review
It's a pilgrimage. It's an experience, but not a great experience. Expected live samba and instead got 6 million drunk people packed like sardines into a street corner listening to recorded house music you couldn't hear. You are packed so tight you literally cannot move. It was during carnival and people go there to get wasted and hook up. Maybe that's what it's all about - the spectacle of the mass of people. Maybe it's different at other times of the year. Would not waste my time going there again. Find other samba bars in Lapa instead.

I stumbled upon Pedra do Sal by pure chance while looking for a bloco — and it turned out to be something even better. It’s clearly a long-standing local tradition, full of energy and soul, and it even caught the attention of friends who saw my Instagram stories. The combination of live samba, delicious street food, and a vibrant, welcoming crowd made for an unforgettable night in Rio. An absolute must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the city’s true spirit.
Raul R — Google review
Extremely crowded but totally local samba experience. The location is a 5-10min walk away from metro station though would recommend to walk in a group. The place fills up quickly from 8pm onwards to a point where it’s impossible to walk around / dance freely without going “skin to skin” with someone, especially near the performance area. Drinks and foods are dirt cheap here and fun times are definitely guaranteed, with a caveat of you being drunk enough to disregard the sweat, heat and potential piss on the streets. Overall it’s worth a visit for the experience but will not revisit due to the difficulty of navigating through crowds.
Hilary N — Google review
An amazing experience, respectful and fun people. Always felt safe
Natalia M — Google review
Great experience, went there on a Monday, it’s pretty crowded as people say, but not too bad in my opinion. Drinks and beers are cheap, the samba part (8-12PM), was missing the energy, but from 12PM they played more popular hits from around the world, and the energy picked up. Would recommend trying at least once!

Hotel Emiliano - Restaurante Emile offers a sophisticated and exclusive dining experience in Copacabana, with stunning ocean views and a modern yet traditional ambiance. The hotel's striking panel facade brings a contemporary touch to the neighborhood, while the rooftop bar provides an unparalleled vista of Copacabana Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Guests can enjoy fine dining at the renowned Tereze restaurant, set on the hillside of Santa Teresa, as well as pampering themselves at the top-rated spa.
This dining establishment truly deserves all the praise it can get. From the moment you step inside, you are welcomed as if you are the only guest in the entire restaurant. The ambiance of the dining space is simply stunning, especially if you are fortunate enough to be seated next to the breathtaking vertical garden. Their dinner menu is exceptionally good value at $52, which includes the tip, and offers three courses along with an amuse-bouche. Each dish is impeccably presented, and the quality of the food is undeniably excellent. It might just be one of the finest dining experiences you can have in Rio. There's honestly nothing to complain about.

The waiter was kind and patient while selecting wines. They did have a sommelier on staff.. pretty cool. The meal was just a couple bites… ha.. but the culinary experience was nice. A small quaint space in copacabana and did not visit rooftop due to it being closed.

I was there a month ago for dinner and it was very good, however was told the chef had just left and they were awaiting a new one. The service was the best I have had in Rio. However going back this week the menu had changed and was less interesting, (although the ceviche was very good), mains were expensive and small, and the service was all over the place. Also the excellent executive lunch menu had gone (despite still being on the website). It’s a shame as it was one of my preferred restaurants in Rio. However with the new setup there is much better value for money in Rio. Still a really nice dining space so hopefully they can sort it out.

The highlight is definitely the service - 5 stars. We did the 3 courses experience - starter, main and dessert. The food was good, not outstanding. Our favorite was the couvert, which included goat cheese. Drinks were tasty, I had the coffee bourbon one. Environment is also nice - comfortable chairs, well selected music.

We are celebrating our Anniversary and we carefully choose a restaurant to have an amazing night however the experience we had in this restaurant is completely unpleasant. First, they are unresponsive in their Social Media Accounts, I have to ask my Brazillian Boyfriend to message them in Whatsapp and yet they took so much time to reply and do not reply on all the inquiries we had. We asked for a reservation in the rooftop with the view advertised in Instagram and they confirmed it that it will be available but when we got there the pool chairs are all over and people are in their bathrobes that kinda ruin the vibe. We also asked if the menu for Restaurant week is available but no response on WA and they asked us to go down as it is not available on the roof top. When we got downstairs, we are the second couple they had and we told them we are celebrating our anniversary and yet no personalize service were made. The food and service procedure was not followed properly considering it is a high end restaurant as we had bread for starters and a sandwich for appetizer??? They made a mistake serving our dessert. The oysters and bread were still on the table when they serve the dessert. Food were being removed from the table without even asking if we are done with it. Concerns were raised and the somelier handled it properly. However our night is already ruined and it is sad that if from the beginning they are responsive and setting proper expectation, we won't waste one of the nights of our vacation.
Janica M — Google review
Fresh ingredients and tastefully prepared. It's about as good as you'll get in Copacabana. For dinner there is a choice between a 3 or 5 course tasting menu, or al la carte. The tasting menu let's you choose your dishes and has a few that aren't on the a la carte menu so that seemed the better choice. Pork belly and taglatelle were good and the salmon starter was great. We also had breakfast and the dishes, while small, are really good. The le croque monsieur was great!
Alex — Google review
A true gem in the middle of Copacabana. Understated elegance in every detail, sophisticated rooms with great views of the beach. The only downside is that the hotel is so much more chic than its immediate surroundings in Copacabana. We found ourselves using Uber all the time to go to Ipanema where the dining and shopping experience is so much better.

Cais do Valongo is a significant historical site in Brazil, known for being the arrival point of enslaved Africans in the 19th century. Located in the port zone of Rio de Janeiro, it is part of a cluster of historical places that shaped Brazilian cultural identity. This area includes the Valongo Wharf, Pedra do Sal (the birthplace of samba), and the Valongo Garden.
The Valongo Wharf is well worth a visit. While Rio is stunningly beautiful and vibrant it also has a dark past. As well as the archeological sight there is information and graphics explaining the horrific history of human trafficking and slavery in Rio, which you are not likely to find outside of Little Africa. There are some low reviews on account of the site’s poor upkeep, which is a shame the city governance is responsible for; however, not a reason to not go there. You do not go to Valongo Wharf for a pleasant tourist experience, you go there to pay respect to those who died and survived through human trafficking and slavery and still endure injustices today. It is completely safe if you are sensible and respectful. Also, there are plenty of guided tours. Find a tour ran by people of African heritage.

This place is badly maintained. UNESCO designation obviously means nothing seeing this place is one. A lot of construction and animal and human excrement around. I didn't see not 1 tourist here.

I had to really read about and search this place out, but it was so worth it. The rediscovered cobblestone steps are where slaves descended upon the Brazilian mainland back in the 1600s. The most important slave port in the Americas at the time. It's a quiet site, in the central business district of Rio, not far from Olympic Boulevard. It's accessible by car and public transit, surreal to see in person. As an African American, I just had to take it all in. There's a sign/marker that tells the short history of the site there. If you have a few free moments, a must-see, if big on history.

Valongo Wharf is a World Heritage site listed by Unesco. The stone pier was built in 1811 as one of the most important ports for slavery traffic in the Atlantic Ocean. More than one million enslaved persons arrived here from the African continent. Although Valongo is a site of pain, it is still a reference for justice for the African Brazilian people.

A very interesting historical site as this location used to harbor a naval dock were the slaves coming from Africa and brought to the continent by slaves traders would arrive and consequently be sold and traded. This was legal until 1831 when slavery was banned, after this date the traffic continued illegally but the ships would dock duing the night to avoid the public attention, it was then covered in 1843 as the expected arrival of Tereza Maria daughter of Francis I of Two Sicilies. It was then discovered in during a city urban reform. The dock has about meters and is now protected as national heritage it is also part of the circuit of African archaeological heritage.

Happened upon a performance in the outdoor space, Carimbo dos Altos, which was a magnificent presentation of an indigenous story from the Amazon region (all in Portugese), so I did my best to understand it!! Then I ventured into the museum which is truly remarkable. The artwork in clay and wood is so compelling, earnest, and beautiful. It is very well presented, with English options via a QR code. The gentlemen at the store entertained my basic Portugese and spoke with me for about 20 minutes, telling me more about the museum, the artists, music and some instruments. I bought a few pieces of art to take with me and wish that I had more time there. I wouldn't miss this museum if I were you!!

Plaza
Praça XV de Novembro, also known as Praça Quinze, is a captivating historic plaza nestled along Rio de Janeiro's colonial-era waterfront. This vibrant square showcases an intriguing blend of architectural styles, from the elegant Carmo Convent and its adjoining church—once the palace of King John VI—to the sleek modern skyscrapers of Candido Mendes University that rise in the background.
Great environment surrounded by beautiful architecture and monuments. Highly recommend coming Saturday mornings when they have the antique market. You can buy snack food and drinks here too when the market is on. Another great tourist attraction!
Nicholas K — Google review
I enjoyed visiting the imperial palace (free of charge), even though it is so unassuming. I think it is worth visiting if you are interested in the history of Brazil and its colonial past.

On 15th of November 1889, Brazil became a republic. The square in Rio de Janeiro thus commemorate the milestone. Given that Rio is the old official city, before transferring to Sao Paulo.

Nestled on a picturesque hill, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro offers a serene escape from the bustling streets of downtown Rio de Janeiro. This charming chapel, originally known as Morro do Leripe, boasts a rich history that dates back to its early days when it served as a lookout point. As you make your way through the vibrant city center, you'll find this hidden gem overlooking Marina da Glória.
Charming Church up the hill. You get a nice view of the bay. Small inside but well preserved. There are few parking spaces here but a guy is there to charge. Worth the visit and the walk down if you feel adventurous enough.

I did not have the pleasure of attending mass here but this is a beautiful church on the top of a hill that is worth visiting either in the early morning or around sunset to see the beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro and the domestic airport.

Historical landmark
Largo de São Francisco da Prainha is a charming street located in the city center of Rio de Janeiro. It is named after the historic monastic complex that faces it, including the 17th-century church of St. Francis. The church's interior reflects Portuguese influence with its cheerful and airy ambiance adorned with gold flourishes. Recently, this area has become a popular local hotspot, offering a genuine taste of Rio with live music, bustling vendors, and alfresco dining options at nearby restaurants.
A genuine taste of Rio. The live music and nearby vendors create a lively atmosphere. It's a good spot to enjoy a night out. The nearby restaurants offer alfresco dining which is great for people watching. The prices are not the most affordable at the restaurants, so tryna walking caipirinhas from one of the vendors before finding a table for dinner.

Santiago D — Google review
It's a station! Seemed clean, tidy and safe. Two wide and long platforms.
Alex C — Google review
DO NOT GO HERE AT NIGHT. Get an uber rather than metro. Me and my partner came out of the metro station and onto the square, and within 30 seconds a guy on a bike approached us. He tried to snatch the chain off my neck and broke it. Then his 5 or 6 of his friends appeared and grabbed my partner - tried to rip her bag off of her. I gave them the chain and a man came over, then they left us. Avoid at night at all cost. Really scary experience. We’ve been travelling in South America for 6 weeks with no trouble until today.
