Mosteiro de São Bento, a 17th-century church adorned with intricate gilded carvings, is a significant site in Rio de Janeiro. Situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Guanabara, it offers protection and pleasant weather. The monastery holds the remains of Brazilian military figures and has historical ties to Italy. Visitors can explore nearby attractions like the National Library and take a walking tour that includes iconic landmarks such as Praca XV de Novembro and the Municipal Theatre.
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, more commonly known as the Mosteiro de São Bento, is a Benedictine abbey located on the Morro de São Bento in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Mannerist style church is a primary example of Portuguese colonial architecture in Rio and the country. Founded in 1590 by monks coming from the state of Bahia, the Benedictine monastery of Rio de  Janeiro was built on the request of the citizens of the recently founded city of São Sebastião themselves. On the very center of the great metropolis, it is held as the place of silence and prayer. The visit is restrict the church of Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, annexed to the Monastery. Details like the art noveau iron gate and the rosewood altars covered in gold are impressive. From Monday to Friday, at 5:15pm, there services with gregorian chants, which also happened on Saturdays, 8am, and on Sundays, at 10am.

Wonderful place, I wish that the people showing a little respect for the others feeling and believe and they have to make a different between a Church and Copacabana & not coming to such a spiritual place naked neither half naked 🙏

I had a very nice experience at the mosteiro de sal bento! The had a service while me and my father visited, authentic voices and great acoustics! The shop was crowded which was fun, a lot of people and happy faces. The garden was well kept and the walk up to the mosteiro was also very pleasant. Great and authentic place to visit if you want some rio history.

It’s hard to believe there could have so much gold in a church. It’s an important expression of the baroque art in a church in the historic centre of Rio de Janeiro. Worths a visit.

Walking along R. Dom Gerardo road, there is a sign above a door for public access but ignore that and go to the vehicle entry as the door apparently doesn't work. The Monastery is unbelievable, amazing carved wood, all in gold leaf. Paintings, statues etc. It's tucked away as well, we almost missed it. Definitely worth a visit and it's free.

Sao Bento Monastery is a Benedictine Abbey in Rio de Janeiro. This is a an excellent example of Portuguese colonial architecture. It was established in 1590. The interior of the church is very ornate and is covered in gold leaf gilding. We visited the Abbey on a Saturday. It was not very crowded. There are very beautiful sculptures and the site is definitely worth visiting.

I loved the whole environment around this monastery. A peaceful and hidden enclave in the middle of a busy area, it should be discovered if you are in Rio for some days. There is a viewpoint at the back from where the harbor and the whole rooftop of the Museum of Tomorrow can be observed.

Historical place
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária is a grand church in Rio de Janeiro, known for its blend of baroque and Renaissance architectural styles. The construction of the church began in 1775 and it stands as one of the main religious monuments in the city. The interior boasts marble detailing and impressive bell towers. Situated in the city center, this 18th-century church is a must-visit for those interested in Brazil's historical architecture.
We were not able to get in as they close the at 4:00 pm so we were told, we were really disappointed. But even the outside is massive and the view from the nearby Pira Olímpica is beautiful. Sometimes we are all given another reason to come back to Rio.

This is the most beautiful church in Rio and a must to visit. Opening hours are always changing and it may not be open at it says here. Covid restrictions have had this church closed for long time. Take a slow walk around and see the different altars and remember to look up for the amazing roof and a cupola that reminds of St. Paul's cathedral in London.
Mats B — Google review
The Candelária church is one of the traditional ones in the city of Rio de Janeiro and one of the main artistic works of the 19th century in Brazil, given the great names involved in its neoclassical decoration. Founded in 1609, it was later expanded, becoming a parish church, and renovated in 1710. However, in the second half of the 18th century, it needed expansion works, whose project was in charge of sergeant Francisco João Roscio, Portuguese military engineer . The work began in 1775 and, still unfinished, was inaugurated in 1811. The front external part and the general design of the plant are very reminiscent of certain Portuguese works, such as the Church of the Convento de Mafra and the Basilica da Estrela. The church is huge, with a beauty that begins at the doors, the floor, the ceiling, the main altar and the others located on the inner sides. Incomparable conservation and cleaning. Put it on the list of places to be visited in Rio de Janeiro. You can't let go.

Christ the Redeemer is a colossal 30-meter-tall statue of Jesus Christ, situated on top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. This iconic monument, recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The statue, with its outstretched arms, is made of concrete and adorned with soapstone mosaic tiles. It serves as a religious and cultural symbol for the warm and welcoming Brazilian people.
Absolutely stunning. From the tram to the top, walking up the rest of the way and enjoying the incredible views at the top. Yes it is very busy and it probably will be all day every day, so just be prepared! It is still well worth the trip. Everything about it was so much fun. Be prepared to lie down on the floor to get good photos!! You also get to see monkeys, helicopters, paragliders and much more. Also the ice cream is delicious at the top. Obviously everything is well over priced whilst up there!

Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is one of those magical experiences that touch your heart. The moment you see the statue standing high above the city, surrounded by clouds and sunlight, it feels truly special. The view from the top of Corcovado is breathtaking the ocean, the mountains, and the city below all blend into one stunning panorama. There’s something peaceful and spiritual about being up there. Even with many visitors around, you can still feel a deep sense of calm and awe. The train ride through the lush forest adds to the experience, making the journey as beautiful as the destination. It’s a place that makes you feel grateful, inspired, and connected to nature, to faith, and to life itself. An absolute must-visit when in Rio.

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is an iconic statue of Jesus Christ located atop Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This colossal Art Deco statue stands 98 feet tall, with arms outstretched spanning 92 feet, making it one of the largest statues of Jesus in the world and a symbol both of Rio and Brazil. The idea for the statue was first proposed in the 1850s but was only realized starting in 1922, with construction completed in 1931. Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the statue, with sculptor Paul Landowski creating the statue’s detailed features. The statue is constructed of reinforced concrete and clad in durable soapstone, chosen for its ability to withstand the elements.Christ the Redeemer was built by the Catholic Church and local supporters to symbolize peace and welcome, standing prominently on Corcovado Mountain so it is visible from across Rio. Over the years, it has become a global cultural landmark and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The site includes panoramic views of Rio’s cityscape, beaches, and surrounding mountains. It also has facilities such as an elevator and motorized stairs for accessibility.Visitors appreciate not only the religious and cultural significance of the statue but also the stunning views and the impressive engineering feat behind its design and preservation. It represents a unifying symbol with spiritual, historical, and architectural importance in Brazil.Christ the Redeemer continues to undergo maintenance and preservation efforts to protect its structure, ensuring it can be enjoyed by generations to come

A fullfilment of one of my traveling dreams was to visit the statue and admire the views over the city. Might be crowded from time to time but with some spare time you'll get to experience everything easily with one visit. Pre-purchased tickets recommended and can be changed for instance due to weather conditions.
Juho Ä — Google review
It’s unthinkable to visit Rio without getting up close to this iconic statue. Access via the inclined tramway, a few steps and an escalator is easy. It was very misty when I visited and so not too crowded. Thankfully the mist lifted enough to see this beautiful statue, although views of the city remained really limited. The little chapel built into the rear of the statue was a pleasant surprise. I can’t begin to imagine how crowded it must get on a clear day, but you must visit.
David S — Google review
There’s literally nothing to say about this attraction other than wow. The feeling you get seeing something in person after seeing it so many times on TV is amazing. I’m surprised how organised they are. They have lift an escalators on top of the mountain. They are plenty of shops and food court. They do daily shows like Samba dancing.
Mohammed M — Google review
It's worth it. Visiting what's Rio famous for. You can see Rio from the top. The journey to the top was amazing, great views and weather. It's bigger than I thought. Sometimes it's crowded and sometimes you can take photos or ask someone to take it for you. Beautiful memories. Go early and book online there is a website for the train and tickets flr the Redeemer on site. When you arrive There will be a short line and a gift store.
Yousef A — Google review
You can't visit Rio without visiting Christo. It's way up in the national park but visits are well organised and comfortable to all, including those with mobility issues! And the views are spectacular too!

The Basílica Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, built in 1728, is a significant landmark of religious tourism in Rio. It is perched on top of a rock and is known for its staircase with over 380 steps. The sanctuary offers breathtaking views that attract both faithful pilgrims fulfilling vows and tourists seeking stunning panoramas. Its architecture features an eclectic style with influences from the Neogothic style following its last renovation.
A hidden gem in Rio de Janeiro. The church is absolutely beautiful and the view from it is amazing. I highly recommend visiting this place but be careful, the area around this church is dangerous. To get there, take a taxi to "Parque Shanghai" and then there is a short walk to the first funicular.

The convent of Santo Antonio is a historical religious complex located in the city center of Rio de Janeiro. It features ornate religious art and a church with a gilded interior. The convent dates from the colonial period and is one of the oldest remaining colonial settlements in Rio de Janeiro. The Baroque church here is simply stunning and should not be missed if visiting Rio de Janeiro.
At first glance, this place doesn't look extremely "exciting". I was even surprised I had to pay $2 to check out their museum... and holy cow am I glad I checked it out!!!! This place is low-key magical. The gold room is a spectacle to behold, and this is a must see if you are visiting Rio!!! I did not expect to love it so much, but I did! The building is old and FYI their bathrooms don't have toilet paper, but you cannot miss seeing this beautiful sight!

Climbing the stairs might be a challenge for some, but the museum beside it is worth it along with the view from the church. The interior seems to be going a restoration work. By the yard are a religous store and small eatery.

Its unassuming facade hides an absolutely stunning interior, full of gilded carvings and paintings that make it one of the most beautiful churches in the country. The museum, although small, helps to contextualize Franciscan history in Rio, but it is the splendor of the church that dominates the visit and makes the trip unforgettable. The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated in 1976, is a distinctive modern Catholic cathedral with a pyramid-like structure. Its exterior, resembling a concrete beehive, stands out among the traditional baroque architecture of Rio de Janeiro. Inside, the spacious interior can accommodate over 20,000 people and features four stunning stained-glass windows that fill the space with colorful light.
The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro is a striking and awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece that perfectly blends modern design with spiritual serenity. Unlike traditional cathedrals, its conical, fortress-like structure immediately captures attention, rising dramatically against the city skyline. The unique shape symbolizes a sacred mountain, creating a sense of grandeur even before entering. Inside, the cathedral is equally breathtaking. The vast open space, soaring ceilings, and the stunning stained-glass windows that stretch from floor to ceiling create a kaleidoscope of light, filling the interior with a serene and almost ethereal atmosphere. The altar and religious artwork are thoughtfully designed, reflecting both reverence and modern elegance. The acoustics are incredible, making any musical performance or mass an unforgettable experience. Visiting the Catedral Metropolitana is more than just sightseeing—it’s a journey of awe, reflection, and admiration for both faith and architectural innovation. It’s a must-see landmark in Rio, offering an inspiring blend of spirituality, culture, and artistic brilliance.

I was mesmerized by Rio de Janeiro Cathedral’s soaring, conical form—the first time I’d encountered such striking geometry in a church. Its hyperboloid structure creates a feeling of being enveloped by light and space. This bold design is rare—reminds me of Brasília’s cathedral and Évry Cathedral in France—making it truly unforgettable.

Wonderful cathedral would of loved to have listened to chior or classical music in there. The stain glass windows are beautiful, a great modern cathedral.

Sept.25: this was one of the many free places we visited in the Lapa area. The Cathedral is in middle of the Lapa area with beautiful multicolored glasses. @Time of visiting it wasn't busy, but when we left, 5 big tourist busses arrived. @Premises is a copy of the Jezus statue, as well as a big gigantic tower which could be climbed. All are very photogenic. There are many bars, restaurants & great impressive other buildings nearby.

A stunning cathedral. Rio de Janeiro’s Saint Sebastian Cathedral is an impressive modern building in downtown Rio. It is dedicated to the saint Sebastian, who has some statues on the inside. The whole structure is an awesome testament by Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca to ancient Mayan pyramids. The coloured windows are fantastic. The massive building’s clear structure inspires humility and introspection.
Siegfried B — Google review
One of the most unique cathedrals I've visited in shape and interior design. Definitely not like the majority you will find in Europe. Worth stopping in to see it and enjoy it's different structure.
Jozef W — Google review
The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião was one of the most awe-inspiring stops during my day trip in Rio de Janeiro. From the outside, its unique, modernist design immediately grabs your attention—unlike any cathedral I’ve ever seen. The massive conical structure stands tall and proud in the heart of the city, blending bold architecture with spiritual serenity. Stepping inside was truly breathtaking. The towering stained-glass windows reaching up to the dome fill the space with vibrant colors and an almost otherworldly glow. The vast interior, with its minimalist design and peaceful ambiance, invites you to pause and reflect. It's a powerful contrast to the energetic vibe of the city outside. Apart from its architectural beauty, the cathedral also has a lovely little gift shop where we picked up a few meaningful souvenirs. From religious items to locally crafted mementos, the shop had a thoughtful selection that made it easy to take a piece of this spiritual and cultural experience home with us. The Catedral Metropolitana is not just a religious site—it's a symbol of Rio’s blend of modernity, faith, and creativity. Whether you're into architecture, history, spirituality, or simply looking for a quiet moment in the city, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended to anyone exploring Rio de Janeiro!

The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé, a stunning Catholic church in Rio de Janeiro, holds great historical significance. Located in XV November Square, it served as the former cathedral of the city until 1976. With its rococo-style gilded carvings, this church was the site of coronations and weddings for Brazilian Emperors and even the King of Portugal during the Napoleon Wars. It is also renowned for baptizing numerous princes and princesses.
A quick stop turned into a full private tour of this historic church in Rio. It's foundations go back to 1590 and is the resting place of Brazil's "discoverer" Pedro Alvares Cabral. It was also the location of D Pedro I and II coronations and Princess Isabel's wedding. The church keeper was super friendly and helpful telling us all the historic remarks.

In fact, the current residence was moved to Sumaré, due to the lack of conditions in the neighborhood to be the place of residence of the Bishop. Built in the Neo-Gothic style, the temple impresses with its central tower rising above the side sections, all adorned with pinnacles and ogival-arched stained-glass windows, which enrich the visual and convey an atmosphere of spirituality and beauty. The main entrance is marked by an elongated ogival arch, crowned by a triangular pediment featuring the image of Our Lady of Fátima. Delicate rose windows complement the ensemble, bringing balance and elegance to the architectural design. Even located in a densely populated urban area, surrounded by buildings that limit its visibility, the sanctuary maintains a striking presence, establishing itself as both a spiritual and cultural landmark in the heart of the city. Besides its beauty, it carries a rich history of devotion and service to the community, serving as a place of welcome, faith, and gathering for the faithful for decades. The façade of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima is a testament to faith, sacred art and tradition, bringing together beauty, history and meaning in every detail of its construction. The Secretary of State for Public Security has recently addressed concerns regarding the rise of online rumors, clarifying that no official orders have been issued in response to these claims. Citizens express frustration over increasing noise disturbances in urban areas, particularly from vehicles with loud sound systems, and feel that law enforcement is not adequately addressing these issues. Additionally, there are reports of illegal construction activities leading to environmental degradation in neighborhoods like Grajau-RJ, where fruit trees are being cut down for new developments.
(Translated by Google) I am grateful for the opportunity to be heard through this email, may God bless you all. For some time now, we have been using the means (contacts) of communication with public security sectors responsible for receiving complaints, such as: 190, and the hotline, and we here in BAIRRO CARIOCA are not being attended to in the triage. Cars are stolen and brought to the interior of the lots and literally left there until they are dismantled in the open air and in the presence of children. The law-abiding residents report it and no effective action is taken. It is a drug trade, all kinds of illicit activities occur here, and nothing, for about a week we have reported several times the presence of a stolen vehicle - which is still intact, license plate KPE 5826 LOCATED INSIDE LOT 9 and so far nothing, no one has taken action to remove it - thus preventing local crime from dismantling and making money. We recently had a new Jeep Compass here... we filed several complaints and, surprisingly, a police patrol was on site... they lifted the license plate... they saw that it was a stolen vehicle, but nothing. They dismantled the car in broad daylight. On Bergamo Street, the access road to the Rio neighborhood, there is a recycling collection point where drug traffickers authorized people to build a new favela there... under the subway line. They are there armed with radio transmitters, warning people inside the residential complex there... anyway, forgive the lines... but we don't know what to do... some say that some of the 3rd BPM are in cahoots with local crime. I personally don't know. What I do know is that we don't receive any complaints about this place... this is very strange, to say the least. We live in an area abandoned by the powers that be... we pay our bills to drug traffickers... condominiums and other things... mail... delivery services... home appliances... no way. Please help us, because even to exercise our rights, we have to do so with great discretion, so as not to suffer retaliation that could cost us our lives and those of our families. I conclude here with the certainty that I will be heard. I am very grateful. God bless you all. THE ADDRESS IS => RUA BÉRGAMO 320, BARRIOCA. POINT OF REFERENCING AND THE METRO LINE 2 OF SORTING. Desmancharam o carro a luz do dia. OBRIGADO

During the visit, it is possible to see, under glass, the original floor of the church. The construction was led by Antônio José de Souza, in homage to the Patron Saint who was born in Lisbon Padua. (the reason for the Portuguese flag on the towers) Initially built in the Baroque style, after several renovations it currently takes on a neo-romantic style. An interesting fact about the place is that inside there is an image of Saint Our Lady of Pleasures brought from Arco dos Teles. It is said that "after the fire, the region lost value and the upper class that lived there left and the area began to be inhabited by people from the margins of society, such as thieves and prostitutes. An interesting episode that occurred after the fire was the removal of the image of Our Lady of Pleasures by the residents of the surrounding area, who did not accept that the image of the saint remained in such a "depraved" environment. The image of the saint was relocated to the Church of Santo Antônio dos Pobres, where it is still today." There is also a popular belief about the story of "Barbara dos Prazeres" linked to the image, which is another matter...

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito dos Homens Pretos, located in the center of Rio de Janeiro, is a significant Catholic temple with a colonial-style architecture. The church also housed the Black Museum until 2019, showcasing objects related to the period of Brazilian slavery. While some visitors find the interior lacking in charm due to renovations that removed old architectural elements, others appreciate its historical significance and the opportunity to light candles inside.

(Translated by Google) The “brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary and of Black Men” sheltered black and mixed-race people in Rio de Janeiro in the 1640s, and was located on Morro do Castelo (which was completely demolished at the beginning of the 20th century). In the 1700s, the “brotherhood” moved to R. da Vala (today, R. Uruguaiana). But the current church, Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict of Black Men, was rebuilt after a fire in 1967 that destroyed its entire interior. Today, it appears to have a modern style and few ornaments, as practically nothing remained from the fire. Many members of this community were part of the brotherhood. The sculptor and urban planner known as Mestre Valentim was buried in the church in 1813. There is a bronze plaque at the entrance with this information. The church is quite large. Masses are held at noon from Monday to Friday. The Museu do Negro, which used to be located on the second floor of the church, was destroyed in a fire and later reopened. However, it is currently closed and is expected to reopen soon, with new collections. It has many stories related to slaves, which we will have the opportunity to learn about. “The Museu do Negro, through its exhibitions, revives the construction of a history of black people, which reflects their being and feeling in Brazilian society, an essential condition for the formation of black consciousness in the construction of Democracy in Brazil.” A igreja é bem grande.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful church whose construction began on March 1, 1816, and was only completed in 1875. The brotherhood responsible for the church was one of the most important in the city during the imperial period, which is evident in the grandeur and quality of the materials used in its construction. On the outside, it has a neoclassical appearance with a huge pediment; on the inside, it has classical elements mixed with baroque elements, with beautiful wood carvings. The hydraulic tile floor is a sight to behold. It needs repairs to restore its former grandeur. But I recommend a visit. It's easy to overlook this beautiful and historical church built on the XVIII century close to Selaron's steps and the famous Lapa aqueducts. The Parish of Saint Jude Thadeus is a very special place to visit in Cosme Velho. The church has a beautiful grotto behind it that you cannot miss. There is also a show that takes place every Friday evening which is well worth attending.
Very special place you can go when you visit the Corcovado. You can´t miss the grotto behind the church.

(Translated by Google) I got married in September 2022 at the church and it was exactly as I dreamed. I just have to thank Arouca and Daniel, the employees of the secretariat, for all the support they gave me throughout the process from start to finish. I am also very grateful to Deacon Alexandre Varela who attended our wedding. He spoke beautiful words and conducted the ceremony in a unique way! They didn't turn on the air conditioning in the heat of December, the baptismal basin is isolated and the guests couldn't see the ceremony, and the priest who is exclusive to the church mixes politics with religion, he held a very rude ceremony and didn't do the consecration as he should have. (Translated by Google) The church is nice and pretty, well-kept. However, what disappointed me was the priest and his attitude, which his assistant taught me. I have been a photographer for 7 years, I have performed several baptisms, and I know the rules of respect for the church and the priest. As soon as I arrived, his assistant came to give me the details of the orders on how to proceed, so far so good, all churches help to direct. However, I had to hear that the priest is a bit "systematic" and doesn't like the noise of the camera clicking. It's because he studied for 15 years in Rome. I thought to myself, so because he studied there he had to leave his humility there too? I almost couldn't take any photos, because the noise would bother him, and I also felt bothered by the crying of the baby who needed to breastfeed in the middle of the mass, and he wanted to hurry up so he could apply the oil. I just know that it was some unreasonable rules, and the justification was that he spent 15 years studying in Rome... go figure... he could have left there a better, more sociable person. (Original) A igreja é bom bonitinha, bem cuidada.

(Translated by Google) The Mass is very straightforward, correct, with memorable homilies and is quick. Excellent for children who don't usually have patience for long Masses. And there's also the benefit of free parking, where you only need to provide your name, ID and license plate number to park next to the church. The negative point is being corrected: air conditioning will be installed soon. The delay is due to the bureaucracy generated by IPHAN. But let's pray that IPHAN will be more agile!🙏 (Original) Missa bastante direta, correta, com homilias marcantes e rápida.
