Park
Botanical garden
Parc de la Tête d'Or is a vast 19th-century park located in Lyon, France. It features statues, fountains, tall trees, a lake, and botanic and rose gardens. The park offers the charming Le Petit du Parc de la Tete d'Or miniature train ride through lush gardens. Visitors can admire stunning flora and fauna while exploring hidden nooks and crannies or simply enjoying the gentle breeze and warm sunshine.
Fantastic Park and is absolutely massive. We didn’t realise the scale and size of it until we took the little train tour around it which was over 20 minutes and stopped twice. There is a large outdoor zoo space boat pedal bikes, botanical Gardens and loads of stop offs for ice cream. You could genuinely spend all day there and would have a great time. Very fun and close to the bus stops for local bus back to the train station.

Beautiful and very large park! It has a free zoo, a big lake where you can just relax or even rent a small boat, and plenty of space for biking. There are also cafés inside the park. Definitely worth a visit!
Dimitris — Google review
A grand park to spend a whole afternoon. One circle around the park, with preriodical stops to smell the roses, hear the cow bellows, sit to take in the air will take about 2.5 to 3 hours. One of the best parks I've been to. If only it has beer gardens like those in Munich...
Lance C — Google review
Parc de la Tête d'Or is undeniably the green lung of Lyon, a sprawling urban oasis that offers something for everyone. More than just a park, it's a vibrant hub of activity and tranquility, perfect for a leisurely day out. From its expansive lawns ideal for picnics and relaxation to the beautiful lake where you can enjoy a boat ride, the park provides endless opportunities for recreation. It's home to a fantastic (and free!) zoo, a stunning international rose garden (currently, in late May, it would be in its prime!), and diverse botanical greenhouses, including fascinating carnivorous and South African plant collections. Whether you're looking for a peaceful stroll, a family outing, a jog, or simply a place to escape the urban bustle, Parc de la Tête d'Or delivers. Its sheer size and variety of attractions make it an essential and cherished part of the Lyonnaise experience.
Wisanu T — Google review
A magnificent and large park. There is a modern, free zoo and impressive glasshouses. The summer flower displays were impressive. The metro takes within half a kilometre then you have a easy walk to the park gates.
Steven W — Google review
A beautiful and spacious urban park in the heart of Lyon, perfect for a relaxing walk or a family day out. It features a large lake for boating, botanical gardens, and plenty of green spaces. Ideal for jogging, picnics, or simply enjoying nature.

Big park in the heart of Lyon and close to Central railway. We have free morning time around 1 hour and choose this park walking around. - Lake and duck is funny and beautiful nature, we love this - Flower garden is nice but June summer time bit too hot for grew. - Deer 🦌 in the outside part was cute

Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is a renowned food market in Lyon, known for its association with the legendary chef Paul Bocuse. The market offers a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and other gourmet products. It's a popular destination for food enthusiasts and tourists looking to experience authentic Lyonnaise cuisine.
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is more than just a market; it's a vibrant, sensory feast and an absolute must-visit for any food lover in Lyon. This indoor market is a true testament to Lyon's reputation as the gastronomic capital of France. From the moment you step inside, you're enveloped in the sights, sounds, and aromas of exceptional produce. Stalls groan under the weight of incredible cheeses, charcuterie, freshly baked breads, exquisite pastries, and an impressive array of seafood. You'll find everything from regional specialties to international delicacies, all of the highest quality. What truly sets Les Halles apart is the opportunity to not only shop but also to dine. Numerous small restaurants and counters offer immediate gratification, serving up fresh oysters, Lyonnaise specialties, and gourmet treats right there in the market. It's a fantastic place to sample local flavors, enjoy a leisurely lunch, or simply soak in the lively atmosphere.

The food market in Lyon is truly a food lover’s paradise. Its offering everything from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to cured meats and pastries. The variety and quality are showcasing the best of French gastronomy.

Such an amazing experience in Lyon. A great representation of the gastronomic history and life of Lyon. Loved all the stories and information about the great chefs and seeing and trying local specialities. I highly recommend doing a private tour. We went with On City Lyon. The guide was knowledgeable and spoke good English. The tastings were fantastic and we had a great time. The markets were busy with rugby fans but our tour meant we had seats and were able to get in and try a number of different local specialities. One of our favourite tours and visits as a couple.
Rosalie B — Google review
Came on a Sunday afternoon at about 1pm and some shops were already beginning to close. Some items can be pricey so we didn't buy much, though it was nice to see the variety of goods being sold. Would be worth coming if you arrive earlier, where you can spend more time exploring the area.
Jonathan C — Google review
How I wish I’d enjoyed this better. There was so little that was gluten free and the vendors weren’t interested in my questions so I never felt anyone understood enough to feel safe eating there. We were starving! Took some ham and cheese & went to the gf bakery and got done bread but by then I was hangry. Tried the risotto which was delightful but I reacted and I don’t have a clue why? It wouldn’t have wheat in it? Loved Dijon market much better.
Cassie G — Google review
The store offers a good selection of different type of food. Saucisson de Lyon Brioché is one of my favourites. We arrived a bit late and thought the stores won’t close until 4pm but most stores closed before 3pm. So we didn’t get chance to explore more and rushed to pick a few items and left. The few items we picked turned out to be a bit pricey comparing to hotel’s buffet breakfast. There is a lot of paid parking available and the parking fee is quite reasonable. Will I come back again next time in Lyon? Maybe.
Joyce L — Google review
Fantastic market with many providers of fine French food. We had a petit dejeuner at La Fer and it was very nice. Pastry came later. Not too crowded early, but the vibe much better later in the day.
Ross — Google review
It’s designed mostly for tourists. Working hours: by 1pm a lot of places were closed. I personally would recommend getting oysters (I also loved their Bullot) at Maison Pupier (Oyster bar) with better prices (you can even order 1 of each oyster kind) and service compared to Chez Antonin (where I got a rude waitress with super expensive oysters that don’t even taste good). Another recommendation is to get lyonnaise delicacy - red praliné tart at Seve (yes it’s expensive).

The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière is a 19th-century religious monument in Lyon, France. It features four octagonal towers and houses a museum showcasing religious art. Regular Catholic services are held at the basilica. Visitors can enjoy a romantic evening in Lyon by staying at the Boudoir Spa, which offers luxurious accommodations with amenities such as a Jacuzzi and hammam, providing an ideal setting for special occasions or simply spending quality time together.
You can see the Basilica from almost everywhere in the Lyon old town but it is well worth heading up to see it up close. Take the funicular (walking back down is nice) to get there. The Basilica is in such lovely condition. The murals look amazing and there is a real sense of peacefulness. Make sure you take the time to look closely at the murals. My favourite was the one depicting Joan of Arc. We went on a Saturday morning and it wasn't too busy. We didn't have to wait to go in. It is free to visit. There is a lovely courtyard next to the Basilica where you get some amazing views over Lyon.
Craig C — Google review
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of Lyon’s most iconic landmarks, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Personally, I usually find the interiors of Orthodox churches more spiritual, but this basilica’s interior really amazed me — it’s beautiful and inspiring. The exterior is just as impressive, and the panoramic view over Lyon from the top is fantastic. You can get there easily by tram, or hike up if you prefer (which I’d also recommend). Nearby, the Roman Theatre and archaeological site are free to visit and very well preserved. Both the basilica and the ruins are definitely worth seeing.
Dimitris — Google review
Arriving late evening in Lyon, our Uber driver took us here on a quick detour to our hotel ‘because it is so very beautiful, and you guys can see view of Lyon skyline from there’. Indeed it was a beautiful Basilica, majestic even in the dark of night. Indeed it was an impressive view of Lyon. Very grateful of him, blessed his soul. I got the chance to go back the next morning, and although did not got the chance to go inside, my appreciation grew even more about the opportunity to visit. A must go when you are in Lyon. If your hotel is not nearby, they have tram from the city center that stops directly in front.
Milka C — Google review
Lovely place to visit in Lyon. Get a day ticket for € 6.90 and couple of trains later you are there. Beautiful views of the city (sunset as well). Basilica is amazing. Don't compare it with Vatican however it is grand in its own way.
Aleksandar J — Google review
It is a marvelous place to visit even when you are not Christian. The interior of the basilica Notre-Dame of Fourvière in Lyon, is tremendously high. The walls are astonishing and it drops your mouth down to the floor. I have not taken many pictures inside because my eyes were focused on all the tiny details in each stunning things my eyes would lay eyes on. If one thing to visit in Lyon, it clearly is there and Paul Bocuse Market^^.
Anne-Cécile — Google review
What a beautiful basilica one has the pleasure to see, adore and to participate because during our vist a mass was held. The church has an endless history to show, not only in the holy Christian sense but also in its rich architectural designs. A real treat to be there.
Eswiss64 — Google review
Definitely recommend booking a tour to see the rooftop. Amazing view of Lyon. So many gems to see and learn about how the cathedral was built. Who knew so much goes on on the rooftop and top floors of the basilica?
Heidi F — Google review
The basilica can be accessed by foot but we took the funicular up and walked on the way down. It’s a very beautiful place of worship and offers wonderful views of Lyon from the viewing area next to it. It’s also worth visiting the Roman ruins which are a short walk from the basilica.

History Museums
Perched on a hillside, the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière offers a captivating journey through the city's ancient history. The museum boasts an extensive collection of art, pottery, and coins from the Roman era. Its audacious architecture provides a striking contrast between contemporary design and ornate Roman relics. Visitors can explore well-preserved ancient constructions such as the Roman Theatre, Odeon, and Roman Baths nearby.
This was a fantastic museum for anyone with even a slight interest in history. Focused on the Roman Empire and how they founded what is now Lyon back in 43BC. The building itself is amazing. You street at the top which is basically chrome level and you work your way down over 5 levels. Plenty of space and really easy to move around. So many pieces to look at. I was surprised at how well preserved many of them were. Some good interactive sections specifically for kids were also good to see. We got an entry included in our Lyon city pass but considering the size of the museum the entry price is very good. Well worth going to see when you head up to the Basilica.
Craig C — Google review
Very nice museum. The building itself is very interesting, built like a bunker. The contents are also very interesting there are a lot of really amazing artifacts. They have a lot of kid stuff so it seems to be one of the most family friendly museums I have seen. Would highly recommend visiting. Water fountain with nice cold water on the 5th floor
Daniel H — Google review
What a surprisingly good museum in many stories. It was much larger that I expected. There are many, many objects that are exhibited very well thematically. Nice introductions to the different themes. And three wonderful Lego scenarios: the hippodrome, the Forum, and the Therme-quarter.
Mette K — Google review
In a word: stunning. The museum holds many very important works of art from the early Roman Empire, some without parallel anywhere else. Admission is free for students and seniors, and for all others, the ticket cost is low. Audio guides are free and available in many languages. The museum itself, carefully hidden inside a hill, is a marvel of modern architecture. This should be a thorough visit because the collections are very extensive.
Dmitri S — Google review
Wasn't sure what to expect when walking in but this was an amazingly informative museum. It traced the history of Lyon very well and presented all the artifacts with great details. Expect to spend at least 2 hours if you want to read everything and a lot of it is in English too. Highly recommend not skipping this.
RV — Google review
The Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière, also known as Lugdunum, offers a captivating journey into the ancient history of Lyon, once the Roman city of Lugdunum. Situated on Fourvière Hill, the museum is ingeniously built into the hillside, providing visitors with panoramic views of the adjacent Roman theatre and odeon . Lugdunum houses one of France’s most significant collections of Roman artifacts: • The Lyon Tablet: A bronze inscription of Emperor Claudius’s speech advocating for Gallic senators’ admission to the Roman Senate. • The Circus Mosaic: A rare depiction of a Roman chariot race, showcasing the entertainment culture of the era. • The Sarcophagus of the Triumph of Bacchus: An intricately carved marble sarcophagus illustrating Bacchus’s mythical conquest. • The Lyon-Vaise Hoard: A collection of silverware and jewelry buried during the 3rd century to protect them from invasions .
Wisanu T — Google review
Such a beautiful and detailed museum! We were able to go in for free and the audio guides were also free which was an unexpected bonus. Perfect place to hide out from the heat for a few hours.
Boo T — Google review
This museum was built in 1975 by the architect Bernard Zehrfuss with a unique design that blends it with the hill and makes it almost invisible from the outside. The exhibition is on 4 floors and comprises a lot of interesting archaelogical pieces from the Roman era. The ticket costs 7€ and you can get an audioguide with it. I enjoyed it very much and I think it's worth a visit.

Shopping mall
Shopping
Confluence is a modern retail complex in Lyon's 2nd arrondissement, situated at the convergence of the Rhone and Saone rivers. Once an industrial area, it has been revitalized with contemporary buildings designed by renowned architects. The district features a vibrant commercial artery, Cours Charlemagne, offering trendy restaurants and cafes like Maison Pepin and Platypus Brewpub.
Confluence in Lyon is proof that shopping malls can indeed be attractive. It has a large collection of stores of any and all kinds. They're assembled under one big roof. Shopping is not the only attraction as the space contains a large number of eateries and restaurants, not to mention movie theaters. Families come here for a stroll, an ice cream or simply to get out of the house. The location is not far from the center and is easily reachable with public transportation.
Georges Y — Google review
I was here during winter 2024, good mall near confluence, big food chains like Mcd, burger king, etc are present. Supermarkets carrefour is also located in shopping complex. Near to tram station and good view and marina walk near to mall
Sahil M — Google review
Nice large mall with plenty of shops. Very new and clean with good restaurants. Only tramway to go to Confluence but it’s pretty fast.
Julien J — Google review
A huge and convenient shopping mall. It’s just in front of the train station and is quite huge. U can get almost anything u want from there. I was able to buy a special tea I’ve been looking for few weeks there. It has a huge food court at the top, and u kind find all kind of healthy and less healthy food up there. Even there is an indoor park for children. I would recommend visiting here if u want to get something while ur visiting Lyon. It has public toilets inside, that u have to pay 1€! And unfortunately, they are not as clean as you might think. Also, the mall is huge, and it has a very good system to show the ways and avoid being lost.
Enoop M — Google review
Should change the name to - Olfactory Merry-Go-Round of Malodour Smells awful in a variety of ways every few meters as you walk. Fishy then sour then smoke then fried food then parfum then unidentifiable stench then back to sour then scummy smells and so on. The ill advised remedy was likely to layer cheap cologne that has worn off and instead of washing you just continue to spray more on top of the stink hoping it will go away. Many years later you get this unfavourable ambiance. It actually quite impressive how many different stinks you can accumulate in a partially open air building. Well done sir! Security attacked us for having a shopping cart in the “mall” what a joke of a dump! Not to mention the fact that the store selection is lacklustre and dated. Mango and toy store is about the only decent shop in the place and it’s small. Not an opinion, an observation of evidence!
Bo J — Google review
Contemporary design and great atmosphere. Lots of brands and shops. I liked the design of the third floor (the Terrasses) designated primarily for restaurants. The surrounding area is spectacular and beautiful. Good quality space all around.
MA — Google review
Fantastic addition to modern architecture. We first saw it on the tourist bus so understand the concept behind it. Great eco designed architecture throughout the area. Well worth the time to explore. Beautiful tree lined walkways and park areas surrounded by the river and a canal. The roof top area of the mall is open to let air and light and covered to keep you dry.

One stop for shopping and dining. Unfortunately when we visited during Christmas, all the shops and eateries were closed. But liked the ambience... 😊

The Mémorial National de la Prison de Montluc, located in Lyon, France, is a historic site that served as a military prison and gained notoriety during World War II. It was used by the Nazis and the Gestapo to detain individuals they targeted. The prison now stands as a solemn tribute to the victims of this dark period in history.
Interesting memorial of the former prison. Leaflets available in French and English. No admission fee. We had very informative and interesting talk with the receptionist - thank you again for sharing your knowledge, stories and answering our questions.

The only "but" is that nothing is in english but hey, is free so....you can stroll at your own pace around a former military compound turned into a prison, every single cell has a panel with photos and stories about the inmates ,really moving i learnt a lot, not many visitors and has lockers and toilettes,

Warning: this is not a pleasant place to visit. Though I don't understand French or know much about European history, my heart felt heavy and depressed when looking at the exhibits especially those relevant to Holocaust. It'd beyond my imagination the hardship and suffering people endured here. Salute and 5 stars to those who make the efforts to preserve this piece of sad and dark history so that people can learn from it and avoid repeating the same mistake in whatever form and shape.
Michael C — Google review
A great place to appreciate the past/history and education the future generations.
T H — Google review
I disliked this place as it was gloomy and made me feel uncomfortable in such an atmosphere (personal feeling). On the other hand, some cells did provide good information like which well-known figures were inside there before. The tour guide did a good job by explaining the history very well!

The Mémorial National de la Prison de Montluc is a poignant memorial and historical site located in Lyon that commemorates the victims of the Nazi regime during World War II. This former prison was used by the Gestapo to detain and torture political prisoners, resistance fighters, and Jews before they were deported to concentration camps. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the atrocities committed during the war and pays tribute to those who suffered and lost their lives. Visitors to the site can explore exhibitions that provide insight into the history of the prison, the experiences of the detainees, and the broader context of the French Resistance and the Holocaust. The memorial includes a museum with photographs, documents, and personal testimonies that highlight the struggles and bravery of individuals who opposed oppression. Historical landmark
Les Traboules du Vieux Lyon, often referred to as the Secret Passageways of Old Lyon, are a fascinating maze of covered walkways that weave through the city's historic Renaissance district. Dating back to the 4th century, these unique passages were initially designed to offer residents sheltered routes between their homes and the bustling River Saône. Over time, they adapted to various needs—serving as safe havens during turbulent times and facilitating trade in silk when Lyon thrived as a production center.
So beautiful ! It is not crowded like Paris but has all the charm.. very easy to get around especially for first time tourist… easily to get around within 15 minutes everywhere.. so many Michilin star restaurant as well as local favorite eatery!!!

Not easy to find. If and when you do find one remember to be respectful of the people who live there. Keep it quiet. Past tourists have been really loud and rude. Now some Traboules are being closed off to the public. They're keeping them open until about 7pm. If you look for doors that have a brass plaque lext to them that'll help you find which ones are open to the public.

The Mur des Canuts, located on the Boulevard des Canuts in Lyon's Croix Rousse district, is a massive mural that showcases the history of the neighborhood, once inhabited by silk weavers known as canuts. Painted in trompe-l'oeil style, it seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. Initially created in 1987, this mural has been periodically updated to reflect changes to nearby structures.
The Mur des Canuts is one of Lyon’s most striking and imaginative landmarks—a massive mural that blurs the line between reality and art. Located in the Croix-Rousse district, this incredible trompe-l’œil (trick of the eye) painting spans an entire building façade and captures the spirit of the neighborhood’s history and daily life with astonishing detail. From a distance, you might mistake it for an actual street scene. Windows, staircases, balconies, people chatting—everything is painted so realistically that it feels like the wall itself is alive. The mural pays tribute to the Canuts, Lyon’s 19th-century silk workers, while also evolving over time to reflect the neighborhood’s modern character.

The Hôtel de Ville de Lyon, or Lyon City Hall, is one of the city’s most impressive architectural landmarks—grand, historic, and perfectly situated between Place des Terreaux and the Opéra de Lyon. Built in the 17th century and later restored after a fire, this building is a showcase of French Baroque elegance and civic pride. Its ornate façade, intricate sculptures, and imposing bell tower make it a standout feature of central Lyon. Every detail, from the symmetrical windows to the sculpted allegories and coats of arms, reflects the building’s historic importance and artistic richness. It’s especially stunning when illuminated at night, casting a golden glow over the square.

Not open to the public, except for special tours Hôtel de Ville is the city hall of Lyon. It was completed in 1672, designed by architect Simon Maupin. After a fire in 1674, it was rebuilt and modified by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the chief architect of Versailles. Its baroque façade features sculpted figures, grand columns, and a central clock tower originally crowned by a statue of Louis XIV, later replaced with one of Henry IV.

Bartholdi Fountain, created by the renowned French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was unveiled in 1892. It is located at Place des Terreaux in Lyon and is a must-see attraction. The fountain's design exudes a sense of movement and energy, making it a remarkable sight for visitors. During the day, its refreshing coolness provides relief from the heat, while at night it is illuminated with cozy lighting.

Plan to see it after April 1st. We got there on March 29th only to find that like most waterworks in Paris and Lyon it was completely dry. They are active starting April 1st. The sculpture is large and very impressive and conveys a sense of motion. Bartholdi after all designed the Statue of Liberty in New York. This work also has an interesting history which you should look up and read.

Beautiful fountain, very nice place. We did a big Bulgarian folklore dance event there.
Tanya S — Google review
The Bartholdi Fountain in Place des Terreaux is one of Lyon’s most iconic and dramatic landmarks. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the same sculptor who created the Statue of Liberty, this stunning fountain is a powerful display of motion, emotion, and artistry in bronze. The sculpture features a majestic female figure representing France riding a chariot pulled by four wild horses, each one snarling and rearing as if frozen mid-gallop. The detail is breathtaking—from the flowing manes and rippling muscles of the horses to the commanding grace of the central figure. Water flows beneath them, adding life and movement to the already dynamic scene. Originally commissioned for the city of Bordeaux, the fountain was eventually installed in Lyon in 1892, where it has become a beloved part of the city’s identity. Set against the backdrop of the grand Hôtel de Ville and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, it’s a striking photo spot and a magnet for visitors and locals alike.
Wisanu T — Google review
The Bartholdi Fountain is a stunning piece of art and history. The detailed sculptures and the powerful water display make it a real centerpiece of the square. Knowing it was created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the same artist who designed the Statue of Liberty, makes it even more special. A beautiful spot to relax, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
George N — Google review
The Fontaine Bartholdi was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi when he was only 23 years old. Bartholdi would design the Statue of Liberty 15 years later. The fountain depicts France as a female figure (Marianne) seated on a chariot, controlling four powerful horses that represent the four great rivers of France: the Rhône, the Rhine, the Loire, and the Seine. Originally commissioned by the city of Bordeaux, the project was rejected for being too expensive. Lyon later purchased the fountain, and it was inaugurated in 1892.

Fête Des Lumières is an annual event in Lyon that attracts millions of visitors. It originated in 1852 as a tradition of placing candles in colored glasses to celebrate the new Virgin Mary statue on Fourviere Hill. Today, it has evolved into a spectacular festival where the city is transformed into a dazzling display of lights and colors. Local and international artists create stunning installations across streets, parks, squares, and building facades.

So disappointed!!! Christmas with NO Christmas trees nor any Christmas lights to be seen anywhere in the Belcour square and in Lyon for that matter, only the big wheel and half a dozen big balls were lit, nothing related to Christmas. NO Christmas lights other than in one street and all this during the Festival de la Lumière! Really? What a disappointment! Even the Festival of lights projected on buildings was disappointing in comparison to 7 years ago. It seems it has lost its way. No lights in people's windows either. The only one thing that was still well organised was the crowd control. For me, it is no longer worth flying in or traveling any distance nor to pay for expensive hotels or Airbnb's for that very poor show. I heard quite a few comments about the ecological mayor... my message to him, if you can't do a Festival of light with clean energy, then don't do one at all. Please don't take tourists for more stupid than we are.

Théâtre Gallo Romain, also known as the Gallo-Roman theatre, is a significant historical site in Lyon that offers a glimpse into the city's ancient Roman past. The ruins of two Roman theaters are now used for open-air concerts and festivals, providing visitors with a unique cultural experience.
This place is really cool. It’s free and easy to find. It is one of the cooler Roman ruins because it is still being used today. It was fun watching people enjoy it like a park. Would highly recommend visiting then heading over to the museum!

Amazing ruins to check out within a close walk from the Cathedral nearby. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to explore the inside of the museum, and since we were heading to Rome it seemed appropriate to postpone anthing Roman to our later trips. Lyon was founded in 43 BC under the name of "Lugdunum" as a colony of the Roman Empire and later became the capital of Gaul provinces. In 15 BC Romans built on the Fourviere hill this massive theatre that could host up to 10 thousand people. Later in the 1st century A.D. they also built a smaller Odeon beside it, that could fit 3 thousand people. The entrance is free, nearby there's also an interesting museum on Roman and Gaul history.

The Ampitheatre was still in good condition considering how old it is. There are a lot of modern overlays here as the space is used for events etc. I think it would be an amazing venue. Go to the museum which tells the story of how Lyon was founded by the Romans. The Ampitheatre is so out in the open and there is no shade so be careful on hot days. Matthew M — Google review
I was sad to see that the theater's preserved ruins are so limited. The modern extension on the lower part built for concerts and other events is unsuitable and doesn't complement the original site. As someone who respects heritage, I believe it's a missed opportunity. They could have completed the space in a much better way that truly aligns with the importance of the original site, keeping it alive while honoring its history.

The Fresque des Lyonnais, also known as the Mural of the Lyonnais, is a magnificent trompe l'oeil painting that graces the exterior of a building in Lyon. This impressive artwork, created by renowned artist Raymond Moretti in 1995, showcases 30 influential and celebrated figures from the city's history.
We did a nice walk along the Saône River to this fantastic public art homage to the great personalities of Lyon.
Rod “ — Google review
This beautiful mural was painted by CitéCréation collective in 1995 and represents 24 historical characters of Lyon, like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry or Lumiere Brothers and 5 contemporary characters, like Paul Bocuse. The mural is on the back wall of the building on a quite narrow street, so it's difficult to take a full picture of it.

This bustling market offers a wide array of local and organic produce, meats, cheeses, and prepared foods. Visitors can indulge in tastings and purchase high-quality ingredients while taking in the stunning views of the city from its hillside location.
This is what a real farmer's market looks like. Long lines of vendors selling the freshest meats, cheeses, vegetables and fruits. Also some cooked food ready to eat too. A must visit when in Lyon.

A comprehensive farmer's market with fresh and affordable produce. Cheese, vegetables, fruit, meats, seafood – this place is perfect for getting groceries or even a quick snack to-go. We bought a number of fruits to eat on the spot and they were very fresh, especially the prunes and peaches! It was lovely to stand around and watch life go by, the locals here are generally content with taking things slow and enjoying a leisurely pace.

Saint George Church of Lyon is one of the oldest churches in Lyon, dating back to the 6th century. The Gothic structure stands majestically on the banks of the Saone River and has undergone several reconstructions over its 1.5 millennia history. Despite being used as a hay warehouse at one point, it has been restored to its original medieval appearance.
Built in 1844, the first work of Pierre Bossan, which he considered his "youthful sin", the St-Georges church, in neo-Gothic style, is located on the site of the Commanderie of the same name, which occupied the places since the Middle Ages.

Église Saint-Georges was established in the 6th century and underwent several reconstructions over the centuries. The current structure, completed in 1848, was designed by architect Pierre Bossan in the Neo-Gothic style. The façade features a sculpture of Saint George slaying the dragon.

A beautiful Church located on the right side of the Saône river. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited but thoroughly admired the building. This is a neo-gothic architecture and a listed monument. It's particularly stunning if viewing from the Passerelle Saint George Suspension Bridge as one really appreciate the beautiful Church façades. Of note is the main entrance door with the pediment showing Saint George slaying the dragon. It's also on the Vieux-Port of Lyon which is the old city. Beautiful Church to look at.

Wonderful little church located at the heart of the "old Lyon". Gothic style, with a more traditional feel to it. If you want to know what a real French church looks like well you should really check it out. It has a lively community with regular mass and activities. Here you can assist to mass in Latin. Be sure to check it out if it's your kind of thing. Lovely place, a bit like a time capsule.

Parc des Hauteurs is a picturesque hillside park located beneath the basilica of Fourvière in Lyon. Visitors can reach the park by taking a funicular to the top of Fourviere hill, where they will be greeted with stunning panoramic views of Lyon, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral, the River Saone, and the Presquile peninsula. The park features a rose garden and offers plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery.
As an international student in Lyon, Parc des Hauteurs quickly became one of my favorite escapes from the busy city. Hidden behind Fourvière hill, the park feels peaceful and almost secret, with paths winding between trees, gardens, and ancient Roman ruins. I love walking there after classes, especially in the evening when the view over the Saône River and the rooftops of Vieux Lyon is breathtaking. It’s not a huge park, but its charm lies in the quiet atmosphere, the small bridges, and the sense of history surrounding it. Sometimes I bring my books and study on a bench, other times I just sit with friends and enjoy the sunset. Compared to tourist-heavy spots like Place Bellecour, Parc des Hauteurs feels more intimate, a place where I can breathe, reflect, and feel connected to the city’s natural beauty. For me, it’s one of Lyon’s hidden treasures.

Beautiful park in Lyon. We walked down from the Basilica to the Old Town of Lyon. The views were spectacular and even in late November, there were still leaves on the trees and flowers. It was so peaceful. Beautiful statues along the way. There is a long winding path or you can take much steeper stairs. We took the winding path and the walk was beautiful. Highly recommend visiting this area of Lyon.

You can walk down the hill through the beautiful rose and orchard gardens. It’s very steep, paved, and there’s stairs that cut through the winding roads. Once out of the garden you can still walk down another very steep set of steps. When entering the garden you can choose to go left to the orchards and right to the roses. We did left and saw beautiful hydrangeas. Nicely covered and cool.

Nestled in the vibrant Croix-Rousse district of Lyon, La Clef de Voûte is a jazz club that has been captivating audiences since 2004. This intimate venue hosts over 150 events each year, showcasing the incredible talent of local jazz musicians from the Rhone-Alpes region. Excellent spot for honest to goodness jazz. Entry is free, and you pay what you like when you leave (cash at the entrance or card at the bar). Recommended €10-20 per person. Only beer wine and soft drinks so not a full bar. Pizza is available to order from the spot next door. Only 50 or so spots available to reserve a table, but walk INS are welcome for standing room at the back.

The square is very large and was pretty dusty and with next to no shade in the middle. I'm sure this space would be will use for events etc. Around the edges are yes lined walkways which was welcome in the summer heat. The Lyon tourism centre is here for those looking for help or interested in getting a city pass (you can pick them up here if you buy online). In one corner is the statue celebrating 'the Petit Prince'. There are also several fountains on one side which seemed very popular with young families looking to cool off.

Place Bellecour is a must-visit landmark in the heart of Lyon and one of the largest public squares in France. This vast open space—framed by elegant architecture and bustling with local life—serves as a central hub for the city, where history and modern rhythm collide.

Good place to go and relaxing.

This park is a bit more wild and less crowded than La Tete d'or nearby. It's a good place if you want to run in nature or walk along the river. Not enough water fountain though.
Pierrick W — Google review
This is less of a park and more of a nature reserve. It's a great place walk and jog.

Nice natural park

The riverbank is great but there are so many unleashed dogs with their owners either indifferent or not in control.

Kids playground at the top is pretty damaged and dirty with a strong toilet smell. Some nice views and it's a good hike to stay in shape (300+ stairs).
