Celle Castle, originally built in 1292, is a Renaissance castle with medieval origins and is a must-see attraction in the city. The quadrangular building features immaculately preserved Baroque-style rooms and stunning Renaissance architecture. It also houses the oldest Baroque theater in Europe and a highly decorated chapel. Although guided tours were not available during the visit due to Covid restrictions, visitors can still admire the castle's beauty and history.
We didn't go in but sat in the gardens in front of the castle. It's nicely situated in the center of town. There was a vintage car fair when we were there and the atmosphere was really nice.

The castle impresses with its beautiful Renaissance architecture and well-maintained interiors. Inside, the museum offers a detailed look at regional history with modern exhibition techniques and clear descriptions. Interesting fact: During World War II, Celler Schloss was used as a refuge for artworks from major museums to protect them from bombings, adding a unique historical layer to its story.
Mousa M — Google review
Hundreds of years of history preserved in the old town. A renovated castle with the oldest theater stage in Europe.
Ventins007 — Google review
We did a guided tour. She was amazing and explained everything really well. Enjoyed the parts we could see. She said that the chapel won’t be accessible starting on December until March due to reparations so take into consideration.

History Museums
The Bomann Museum, located in Celle, is a significant cultural attraction in Lower Saxony. It offers insights into the history of Celle, Lower Saxony, and Hannover through various collections and exhibitions. One of its highlights is a replica of a traditional 19th-century Lower Saxony farmhouse. Situated near the city castle, it has been showcasing the region's history for over a century.
Very interesting museum with a lot of helpful information. Unfortunately, no information in English is provided. There are several sections in museum: archeological exhibits, how life in Celle region has been changing during several centuries, the history of migration in the region, the exhibition about life in the farm. I really enjoyed my visit to this museum, but I would definitely recommend to add the information in English
Anna N — Google review
My kid and I went to see the Star Wars Lego exhibit, it was extremely well done and the staff were extraordinarily helpful! Always a great time at the museum
Brandon T — Google review
The day we arrived it was snowing and we were welcomed in to the warmth of the museum. It was great and very educational for both my wife and I and also my kids, aged 10, 13 and 17. We were lucky to be there on a free admission day and also be there with my wifes uncle as our guide. I would recommend this museum to anyone that is interested in how areas were populated and how our ancestors lived. Coming from Australia the depth of history through out Germany and Europe just bew us away.

Nature & Parks
French Garden in Celle, originally designed by French landscapers in the 17th century, now resembles more of an English garden. It's a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the pond and various sections of the park. The garden features a children's playground and hosts numerous open-air events during summer. With its avenue of lime trees, flower beds, manicured lawns, and a charming pond with a fountain, this historic public park offers visitors an enchanting experience.
It is beautiful park although the diversity of the plants are limited. It is clean, calm and relaxing. Nearby the park, there is a popular ice cream shop. We wanted to go toilet in the park, but it was closed.

Museums
The Kunstmuseum Celle mit Sammlung Robert Simon boasts a remarkable variety of exhibits, providing visitors with an enriching and diverse experience. One can spend ample time exploring the museum's extensive collections, which include fascinating artworks and impressive historical artifacts. Additionally, the museum's emphasis on contemporary painting is evident through its various exhibitions. For an added treat, visitors are encouraged to visit the train station, especially in the evening when it showcases its own unique charm.
Good and small museum with interesting exhibits. It is modern art exhibits. There is a special section for children. It is located close to Bowman museum and is connected to it. The visit is free on Saturdays after 13.00. The slogan of the museum is the first 24 hours museum in the world. Unfortunately, I have been there only during the day. As far as I understood, during the night there is an illumination and light effects, you can see them from outside, but the museum is closed.

(Translated by Google) We went to the museum with great expectations of modern art but were very disappointed. Just entering the dark Bomann exhibition and then seeing exhibits that make you ask “is this art or can it be removed”. Sorry, that was nothing with 2x €8 entrance fees.

(Translated by Google) My anticipation was high, and so were the museum rooms. One installation, number 3, "Windows, Down Under," impressed me. All the others were apparently still "under construction," either standing on the wall, neither numbered nor labeled. Some weren't even connected to electricity. Luckily, I had the power to shine! The exhibition is called "Comets" – I couldn't find them, so I pondered the "true and false"! Free access to the Bomann Museum was comforting.

Hoppener Haus is a must-see in Celle's old town, standing as one of the oldest half-timbered buildings among over 500 others from the 16th to 18th centuries. This six-story architectural marvel boasts hand-carved gables and intricate figure ornamentation depicting gods, mythical creatures, and more. (Translated by Google) The Hoppenerhaus on Poststrasse/Rundestrasse is described as the most famous and magnificent half-timbered house 🌟🌟 in Celle and the surrounding area. The house was built in 1532 by Simon Hoppener, who was the ducal rent collector. 💡 (This refers to someone responsible for collecting the revenue). Particularly striking are the magnificent decorations on the facade and the carvings. These are even said to depict excerpts from the Bible. They also reflect the wealth of the builder. 💰💰 In front of the house stands a pipe post decorated with a heraldic lion. In the 16th century, this (one of three)💦 served as a domestic water well. It was quite a privilege to have a well in front of your front door... The house rises to six stories. A picture of Duke Ernst the Confessor has stood next to the elevator hatch since 1901. In 1932, the roof structure was destroyed by fire 🔥. Fortunately ❤️🥰, the fire department managed to protect the beams underneath, with their historic carvings, from the blaze. If you'd like to learn more, I recommend a city tour during the summer months. The light is also perfect for taking proper photos of the house. 😉 💡 If you turn right onto Rundenstraße, you'll also discover the talking lanterns, with catchy sayings on their lips or a goodnight song in the evening. 😉

The Evangelisch-lutherische Stadtkirche St. Marien in Celle is a 700-year-old Protestant-Lutheran town church that has been a spiritual center for the community throughout generations. The interior of the church boasts stunning art from the late Renaissance to the Baroque period, including Gothic pillars, a beautifully designed pulpit by Danish artists, and intricately crafted organs.

Tripped over this on an accidental visit to Celle. Just stuck our nose in the door and we were so impressed with such a unique church. In fact, we would put Celle above Hannover and Hamburg in terms of enjoyable tourist visits in the region. A pretty and relaxing town.
Ian S — Google review
The Church of St. Mary in Celle is certainly one of the most spectacular Protestant churches in Germany. The vivid baroque stucco work by Italian master Giovanni Tornielle is a rare example of the North German baroque, and interesting for its almost Renaissance-like execution and the absence of a central object or clear direction, such as a fresco. Also worth visiting is the much earlier-composed high altar from 1615 with its transitional style and the extravagant baroque epitaphs of the House of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Make sure to climb the tower and see the remarkable Renaissance planned-city of Celle from above.

A yummy place to get German food with a local flair. Some dishes even come with local mushrooms from the Heide. All the dishes we ordered were better than expected. Their beer selection is very limited and they are expensive. The ambience is very nice. We happened to eat just as they opened so we had decent service. We only saw two waiters so I imagined service is terrible when it is crowded. Make sure to read about the history of the Ratskeller.

Thaers Wirtshaus is a traditional German pub located at Thaerplatz 1, within the Congress Union building near Celle's town center. The establishment offers a variety of classic German dishes and Mediterranean cuisine, complemented by a selection of quality German beers. Guests can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, especially when dining outside in good weather. The menu features popular items such as the Thaers-Burger with truffle mayo and Grana Padano served with garlic fries.
For our last day in Celle, my boyfriend and I decided to eat at this restaurant and we had the most amazing night! The service was fantastic and the food was really tasty (I really loved the potato salad!). Aside from the food I have to give a lot of credit to the servers. They treated us with a lot of kindness and even gave us a tip to try the hamburger next time we are there. Sadly it was our last night there but when we come back I will definitely try the burger!

Visited this place four times during my stay in Celle. My husband and I love the Thayer beer. My husband had a dessert & an entree. Both were delicious. Staff was very pleasant & helpful Great atmosphere. Convenient to old town. Can’t wait to come back in my next visit

We stopped at this restaurant during our city tour. The food was good. The service was a bit slow; there was only one server to take care of the entire restaurant that day, but was very nice and professional. They made an effort to communicate with us in English, and brought us menus in English and partially in German, which is very appreciated.

Lovely place to dine. Very spacious and quite a large variety of dishes. There is a turntable area in the corner with the ability to pour your own beer in the center. Very atmospheric for young and old to meet up.

A light modern restaurant not far from the castle, with a range of soups & salads as well as the traditional bratwurst, currywurst, sauerkraut, burgers. meatloaf, and schnitzels. Not perfect service, they got my order completely wrong.

A restaurant with average food. Nothing wrong with it per se but it’s not remarkable. Located in a pretty town and service was good. Think bar food menu with more options. Alcohol is cheap with their own house brew which was pretty cool.

Glockenspiel is a charming attraction in an old building where shops occupy the first floor. Three times a day, at 11 am, 1 pm, and 5 pm, a delightful melody plays while five wooden figures are showcased: Duke Otto II the Strict, Danish Queen Caroline Matilda, reformer Duke Ernst the Confessor, and poets Hermann Lohn-Heide and Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Holt.

(Translated by Google) An old beautiful building. Fortunately, shops only occupy the first floor. 3 times a day, at 11,13 and 17 hours, a beautiful melody is played and 5 wooden figures are shown: Duke Otto II the Strict (founder of the city), the Danish Queen Caroline Matilda, the reformer Duke Ernst the Confessor and two poets Hermann Lohn-Heide and Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Holt.

(Translated by Google) We did it! 🐶 and I stood in front of the Celle carillon at 11:00 a.m. sharp. The carillon can be found on the right-hand side of the facade of the Müller drugstore, opposite the Rahls jeweler. The inconspicuous box on the facade houses five wooden figures that pass by in their orbit. Further up are the 16 🛎️ bronze bells. The entire carillon weighs 570 kg. During the summer months, five Celle personalities circle above the heads of tourists and locals. Monday to Friday at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the event is postponed by 10 minutes. So, at 11:10 a.m., 1:10 p.m.... The historical figures are: Duke Otto the Strict - city founder Duke Ernst the Confessor, reformer Queen Caroline Mathilde of Denmark - Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty - poet and Hermann Löns - writer. After playing at the market for 30 years based on an idea by the C.A.W. Schnell jewelry and watch shop, the city took it over after the shop closed, and the carillon continues to play just a few meters from its original opening. The carillon can play up to four different songs: 🎼 "Into the Wide World," "Up, Up, for a Happy Hunt," "Three Birches on the Heath," or "Ode to Joy." On special occasions, the carillon can also be played manually using a keyboard. As a child, visiting the carillon was my highlight 🤩🥰 whenever we were in town. - Back then, it was still located at the market square. To protect the figures from the winter ☔️❄️🌨️ weather, the carillon is put into hibernation from November to March. ‼️What I would also like to see is a small information board underneath the carillon... Not every tourist books a city tour, and not every Celle resident can answer the question of who the historical figures are that circle high above. 🤔 (Original) Geschafft! 🤔

(Translated by Google) Hmmm... something was wrong. That's right, first the chimes, then came the figures. Once. Guesswork. Back when it was still installed at Schnell, the jeweler; came out the figures at the chimes. It also played more often and especially with the church bell? If so, no problem as it was at the other end of the old market square in front of the town hall. At least that's what my almost forty-year-old memory says. It's also a shame that the meanings of the figures are not mentioned on a sign, as is their position at the Celle court! We learned the story in elementary school, but how do you know all the tourists? Also about the carillon itself, its (early) installation location and the story behind it - is very interesting! I think it's nice that it was "saved" - and without any war in the country!

(Translated by Google) The city of Celle is an architectural and historical jewel that impresses with a large number of well-preserved buildings since the Middle Ages. One of the oldest is the town hall, which was built when the city was founded in 1292. Around 1580 it was expanded using half-timbered construction and converted into a solid stone building in 1785. As someone interested in history, it touches me when I stand in front of it and know that people have stood here for centuries and seen the same thing. (Translated by Google) Great building with many details. The oldest part of the town hall dates from when the town was founded in 1292. The north gable in the Weser Renaissance style was created in 1579. The coats of arms of Duke Wilhelm the Younger and his wife Dorothea of Denmark above the entrance portal to the square are from the same time. The two figures on the two-story bay window probably depict the emperor and his wife. A small portrait of builder Jacob Rieß can be seen on the left entrance pillar. The Celle Garrison Museum e.V. is an exceptional establishment that offers a wealth of information and a fantastic experience for visitors. The museum's knowledgeable staff members provide valuable insights and engaging discussions, particularly in the realm of technical aspects. One highlight is the opportunity to try loading a muzzleloader musket, which proves to be quite challenging but nevertheless exhilarating. Additionally, the museum displays dolls dressed in old uniforms, adding an extra layer of historical authenticity.
A wonderful museum with an impressive and extensive collection, I would like to mention the collection of firearms and edged weapons, which you can not only look at from the side, but also take in hand (with permission, of course). You learn something about the people and their careers. The armory is also quite impressive. Small but perfectly formed. Admission is free, and you can donate whatever you like. We couldn't finish the exhibition in two hours and will definitely come back. The museum is driven by enthusiasts who know everything there is to know about Otto Haesler, and if you’re lucky you can get a guided tour (in German). Combine the visit with a stroll through Haesler’s residential developments in Celle to make the experience complete.

An information visit with a look into the past is therefore recommended. Expert explanations are also given there. (Translated by Google) A gem in Celle that I happened to see in a report on NDR and really wanted to see. I was thrilled by the elaborate and loving design of the museum. The dedicated employee took a lot of time for us and also showed us the fully furnished apartment in the style of the 1920s. A journey through time par excellence. The museum doesn't charge an entrance fee, but I think a good donation is more than justified for so much commitment. Thank you for the interesting visit. Protestant church
Schlosskapelle CELLE is a stunning and historical chapel that can only be visited as part of a guided tour, as there is a window at the entrance preventing direct access. The chapel is considered a future UNESCO World Heritage site and features a beautiful interior. While visitors cannot enter the chapel, there is a 3D film on the third floor offering different perspectives of the chapel.
(Translated by Google) A very beautiful chapel, unfortunately you couldn't go inside, you had to stand in front of a glass wall and from there you could admire the really beautiful chapel. The Celle Castle Chapel is a true gem in Celle Castle. Numerous paintings, colorful images, sandstone reliefs, Bible quotations and many carvings decorate the church interior. At the end of the 15th century, the court chapel was built as a Gothic sacred building on the lower floor of the tower at the eastern end of the south wing and consecrated in 1485. After the Reformation, the chapel received completely new furnishings. Between 1565 and 1576, Duke William the Younger had lodges built for the nobility as a place of lordship and transformed the church into a Protestant chapel with an altar, pulpit and organ. The Celle Castle Chapel is now considered the only almost completely preserved church in Germany from the early Protestant period and is one of the most important examples of Renaissance art in Northern Germany. The chapel's furnishings have suffered no losses over the past centuries and only a few changes have been made.

(Translated by Google) The Celle Castle Chapel is one of the most important examples of Renaissance art in Northern Germany. The sacred building, which was founded in the 15th century, was completely re-equipped soon after the Reformation, between 1565 and 1576, on behalf of Duke William the Younger. Today, the Celle Court Chapel is considered the only almost completely preserved church in Germany from the early Protestant period. Its equipment has suffered no losses over the past centuries and has undergone only a few changes. The uniqueness of the room lies, on the one hand, in the fact that a unique expression of Protestant piety and princely desire for representation has been preserved here. On the other hand, it is the quality and richness of the painting that is unique: the existing painting cycle largely comes from the most influential Antwerp painter of the time. Marten de Vos (1532-1603) and his workshop created a series of images for the Celle Residence that, in terms of their scope and quality, cannot be compared to anything else at that time.

Bergen-Belsen Memorial is a site that preserves the memory of the horrors of World War II, serving as a tribute to those who lost their lives during this dark period in history. It houses monuments, displays and research facilities that chronicle the experience of former POWs and those sent to concentration and displaced persons camps. The museum staff are welcoming and helpful, creating an organized space for visitors to learn about this somber part of history.

Inevitably a very thought provoking experience. A very detailed museum with photos, video artefacts etc. Outside it was not fully clear where to go, take the free map. Nice to see Anne Frank's memorial, her story has moved me for over 50 years
William H — Google review
Free to enter and walk around, the scale of the area is massive and you can easily spend 2-3 hours walking around. You don't truly understand the scale of the camp until you walk the grounds. Although none of the original building stand there are plenty of maps explaining certain areas dotted around the grounds. The POW cemetery is separate from the camp, roughly a 5 min walk and is now connected via a sand path that crosses the training area. All signs have an English translation and the exhibits in the museum also have English translations. There is a cafe and library on site, but I didn't visit.

Keinglitzer E — Google review
(Translated by Google) Here in Celle, a lot is possible – we even have five lanterns that talk. 😉 To do this, you stand in the middle of the lanterns. These are activated by motion sensors, and the lanterns start chattering. There are short historical stories about the Celle blue blood or, in the evening, a short trill of "good evening, good night." 🌟 The lanterns are certainly fun, and it's not just me. They bring a smile to some people's faces. 😁 Particularly nice is that "Grandma" is voiced by Lilo Wanders, who was born in Celle. The lantern's grandson, Jonas, was voiced by a boy from Celle. Jonas has three uncles. Stephan Westphal voices the "know-it-all," Oliver Vollmering's voice comes from the "fat lantern," and Gerlach Fiedler voices the "long lanky guy." The lantern that's speaking at the time will have its light turned on. 💡 After every anecdote, song, or fact, the lanterns take a well-deserved 3-minute break.⏰ And then the distinguished society also has speaking hours: Daily 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. lunch break, The evening program "Good evening, good night…" is from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. And from 9:30 p.m. - 10:00 a.m., quiet time. Two lanterns have a microphone for a non-recorded dialogue—live. This allows the lanterns to communicate with visitors via radio. Don't gossip, you never know who's listening. 😉 The first gas lanterns were installed in Celle 150 years ago. The design of the talking lantern is reminiscent of the lantern from the 19th century. These lanterns were ceremoniously inaugurated in 2008 to mark their 150th anniversary. Between the lanterns stands a bench from which you can listen all day long... Also live. 😉

(Translated by Google) What is the good man holding in front of the horse? So that the prize winner stands up so high on his hind legs? Nothing? But! but not a piece of sugar, certainly not: once upon a time... when this statue was placed here brand new and for the first time. The man was holding a small dressage whip in his left hand (a longer version, as tamers are known to do). But the clever stallion only needed a small pointer as an extended hand to show where to stand when standing up in his freedom dressage, which is so to speak common with animals. But now comes the but: this little whip was quickly stolen one night. The same thing happened to the spare part. So those responsible consulted (donated for the 250th anniversary of the state stud, unveiled there in 1985, then moved to the castle park) ... and from then on their hand remained empty. With kind regards from a Cellensian.

Nestled within the picturesque French Garden in Celle, the Albrecht-Thaer-Denkmal stands as a tribute to one of history's pivotal figures in agricultural science. This bronze statue captures Thaer's dignified essence, reflecting his significant contributions to modern agriculture during the 18th and 19th centuries. Positioned on a stone base adorned with an inscription celebrating his legacy, this monument not only honors Thaer's intellectual prowess but also marks his birthplace nearby at Schuhstrasse 26.
(Translated by Google) On Thear's Square in front of the Congress Union and the Theas Inn stands the monument to Albrecht Daniel Thear – the founder of modern agriculture. He was born on May 14, 1752, at Schuhstrasse 26, where a plaque still commemorates his birthplace. After studying medicine, Albrecht Thear returned to Celle and became personal physician to George III, Elector of Hanover. Shortly before his wedding, Albrecht Thea bought a large amount of land on the Dammaschwiesen and had the residence and manor house built on it, which still stands today. This serves as the headquarters of the "Foundation for Lower Saxony Memorials." His experimental farm with a park on the Aller River is now called Thear's Garden. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of his death in 1873, the Albrecht Thear Monument, standing on a red sandstone pedestal with a marble figure in the timber rafting system, was unveiled to the public. The pedestal bears the inscription: "To the founder of scientific agriculture." The monument was created by the Celle sculptor Erich Hartzer. The monument has stood on Thear's Square since 1998. It's just a shame that it stands on a traffic island on a busy road, making it impossible to get close enough to take a picture... (Translated by Google) The statue of Albrecht Thaer, located in the French Garden in Celle, is a remarkable monument to one of the most important agricultural scientists of the 18th and 19th centuries. Thaer, considered the founder of modern agriculture, is depicted here in a dignified pose that underscores his intellectual charisma and influence on science. The bronze statue stands on a stone base inscribed with an inscription honoring Thaer's achievements. The details of the statue are impressively crafted: from his clothing to his posture, he exudes authority and thoughtfulness. The artist did an excellent job of emphasizing Thaer's importance through a classic, timeless design. The statue's surroundings in the French Garden also contribute to the positive impression. The well-kept green areas, shady trees and central location make the statue a popular spot for walkers who want to enjoy a quiet atmosphere. However, the signage on site could be a little more informative. Although there is a brief explanation, more detailed information about Thaer's life and work would be desirable for visitors without prior knowledge. Additionally, the statue could use occasional cleaning as weather effects are easily visible. Conclusion: The Albrecht Thaer statue is a cultural highlight in Celle that not only offers something for visitors interested in history, but is also aesthetically pleasing. With small improvements in care and signage it could receive even more attention.

Nestled within the picturesque French Garden in Celle lies the Denkmal für Königin Caroline Mathilde, a poignant tribute to the Danish queen who faced exile and slander. Despite her tumultuous life and early death in 1784, she managed to capture the affection of those around her. This elegant monument, designed by Oeser in the 18th century, symbolizes her virtue with a laurel wreath and stands as a testament to her enduring legacy.

(Translated by Google) The Caroline Mathilde Monument was commissioned shortly after her death in 1784 by the Lüneburg Land and Knighthood in memory of her special personality. It was later erected in the French Garden near the little palace. In that short time, the Danish queen left her mark on Celle. When she was exiled to Celle, parts of Celle Palace and the palace theater were restored after 70 years of vacancy. After her untimely death from infection, her brother commissioned a magnificent coffin, which was buried in the Welf crypt in the town church. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the royal death, which Celle is duly celebrating in honor of Caroline Mathilde's marriages. Visitors can visit a special exhibition at the Residenz Museum and much, much more. During the winter months, to protect the monument, as in other cities, the monument is covered with boarding, and in the spring, it is dusted and covered with greenery. In Celle, there's a Caroline Mathilde Street, a hotel that bears her name, and a monument was erected in her honor in the Palais Mecklenburg in the Prinzengarten. What a sad, far too short life for such an impressive young woman at that time!

The river has already had a short journey. It comes from Hohenhameln, crosses under the Mittelland Canal in a culvert near Mehrum, passes Steinwedel and arrives here in Burgdorf. A very beautiful old linden tree avenue can be seen. Around 1700 - the nearby castle with ramparts was built in 1643 - a tree and pleasure garden with corridors based on a baroque axis system was created. There were also fish ponds, a pavilion and a Dutch-style canal. After the major fire of 1809, which largely destroyed Burgdorf, part of the castle moat was filled with rubble. The garden fell into disrepair. The magnificent half-timbered castle is now used for administration and can be visited. In winter, attending concerts is recommended. In the park, it is primarily the large trees on the paths in and around the Amtgarten, along the floodplain and in the city park further south that create a beautiful garden feeling today. A memorial stone commemorates Hermann Löns. A small stream flows into the meadow. Anyone who settles here will find peace and distraction in the green strip between two parts of the settlement - plus the bell of the nearby St. Pankratius Church tolls. The floodplain can still be dreamed of. Even beavers have settled again, which suggests good water quality. That's why eels, pike, tench and perch also live there.
