The Gänseliesel fountain is located at the heart of the medieval town of Gottingen and features a replica of a famous statue depicting a girl with a goose. This landmark is widely recognized and represents the rich history and traditions of the city. The area surrounding it exudes charm and antiquity, attracting visitors who appreciate its beauty. Tourists will enjoy exploring this lovely town as it showcases Germany's cultural heritage and splendor while maintaining its cleanliness and orderliness.
Did you just get your PhD degree in Göttingen? Take you friends, colleagues, relatives, and go to give flowers to Gänseliesel, and don't forget to kiss her! Lovely tradition ;)
Angelika S — Google review
Not my favourite fountain. But we did see it in the winter. Maybe it’s better in the summer.

A beautiful city with a great multicultural variety, a beautiful mix of nationalities living harmoniously. Music and art of all kinds, it is very pleasant to spend an evening in the old and beautiful center. We stayed overnight at Astoria Hotel clean and pleasant.

Just lovely☺️Should check the story behind it. This small city is so peaceful. Really enjoyed walking around here.
Lütfü C — Google review
It’s as beautiful as reported. A delicate statue of a girl with goose. Beware if the numerous tourists who will take selfies and block your view.

Gänseliesel, also referred to as "Goose Girl," is a historical fountain in Göttingen notable for the PhD graduates at the University of Göttingen who are required, as part of an old tradition in Göttingen, to go and kiss her as a token of their love on the day of graduation. Despite the fact that it was built in 1901, it has undergone minor restorations. Every time I visit the city center, I love to walk by this fountain.

Botanical garden
The Old Botanical Garden of Göttingen University, established in 1736, is a historic and scientific treasure showcasing rare plant species and featuring historic greenhouses. Despite being destroyed during World War II, the garden has been meticulously restored and now hosts thousands of plant species, making it one of the largest botanical gardens in Germany. Located near the Old City, this free-to-visit garden offers a serene escape with its diverse flora.
Simply beautiful even though it was under construction and some parts were closed to the public when we were there. I would definitely recommend visiting in spring/summer when the weather is nice and everything is in full bloom.
Juske — Google review
The University’s old botanical garden is beautiful, especially the greenhouses. Paths to walk around and some benches to sit on. Unfortunately we couldn’t explore some as they were locked but I assume that’s because of the weather. Would love to visit again to explore them! There are no tickets and it’s open to explore during the working hours. There’s also a small cafe at the entrance.
Tannavi S — Google review
Loved walking through the gorgeous plants! In October, the outdoor plants were becoming dormant in many cases, but I was even shocked at how many were still in fantastic shape despite the chill! The indoor plants were of course in prime condition. A couple of the buildings seemed locked but most were accessible.
Charles M — Google review
Very picturesque greenhouses and lovely outdoor gardens. Can only recommend going mornings on the week before big crowds!
Melanie S — Google review
I might not be the person for this, but the garden looked not well maintained or at least a bit boring. Well, at least it was free
Lucas K — Google review
Lovely. Check the photos and you will see. Easily accessible just like any other place in our small city.
Lütfü C — Google review
It is a good park, but not worth getting here just for the sake of travel. It is a very special place for my friend tho, because this park is their first date only by themselves. maybe they would like to give the 5 star by themselves
Arsyatria A — Google review
Beautiful Garden. Unfortunately some of the plants are dying probably because of the Hitze. And was surprised when we had Spaziergang, there were two guys sitting on the bench enjoying their weeds. They hide it everytime people pass them by but the smells cannot escape noses.

Historical landmark
Bismarckturm is a memorial tower located on the 332-meter Kleperberg hill in Gottingen, Germany. It was constructed between 1892 and 1898 while Otto von Bismarck, the military commander and chancellor of the German Empire, was still alive. The tower offers a beautiful view of the Gottingen valley from its top, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Really enjoyed the hiking part. The tower has a great view of Gottingen. Easy access from the city. The price is 2 Euros for adults and 1 Euro for kids. Unfortunately no English explanation/signs for tourists.
Lütfü C — Google review
Great monument that offers an amazing view over the entire region. However the entrance fee is a little expensive for what it is. I reccomend a visit for any Göttingen native or tourist!
Jose D — Google review
From central railway station via bus it is easy to reach at the outskirts of the forest and from there it is about 1.5 KM away in the forest that has to be covered on foot. Serene environment and I loved the treck. # Keep Clean
Kishan P — Google review
I went on a solo weekend hike, expected to find many people around it but it was very nice and quiet. Calm experience and a beautiful tower hidden amongst the trees.
Dayan — Google review
The hike was really nice to the top. You have to pay 2 euros to go to the top of the tower. The scenery from the tower was really great especially during autumn. The people who were working there was also super nice.🙂.
Reshma R — Google review
Very nice tourist attraction dedicated to a great personality. The way up is pretty beautiful and the routes are well marked as well. Unfortunately the entrance is closed these days but you can get a great view of the Göttingen valley from the top of the tower. Do wear proper boots if you're walking as the way can be very muddy and slippery.
Vansh M — Google review
It is a tower located in the south side of the city. There was a price for going on top of it, which was 2 Euros. I think it's worth it. It has a great view. But except the view, do not expect anything extra special. If you have some time, go for a trekking and climb on top of it and see Göttingen.
Metin Y — Google review
A must visit sightseeing spot for everyone, whether you’re a guest here or have been living here, it’s a great way to get a fantastic view of your city for a small price.

Highly recommend for students! Only 2.7 for students and there are swimming pools, Jacuzzi, SPA and place to have fun.
JIADING G — Google review
Review only for the indoor swimming pool. Overall - one of the worst experiences of service and facility with unreasonable price. 1. Too Expensive In comparison with other cities, Göttingen basically has only this pool. Thus, Monopoly can happen. 2~3 times expensive. No seasonal ticket. Time limit-overtime charge. Just a typical example of the service in Germany, 'there is no other options...' 2. Relatively Small It should have at least 2 more lanes. Technically 5 lanes are available but for swimming, usually only 3 lanes, two are the loop which makes you keep moving with no your pace. The other two to the windows are usually occupied by private lesson or water Spaziergang talking people. 2 lanes to the shower booth are for diver, aqua aerobic, or life guard lesson. So I've never come over there. 3. Unhygienic You can see hair balls with dust in the water for some days even more than a week. I know one outdoor pool where cleans everyday with the machine, and even 80 eur for seasonal ticket (5 months). We pay lots but worse service than small town pool. Just quite filthy. 4. Too many private lessons One time, one guy asked me that he wants me to move. So I asked, if it is the official lesson. He couldn't answer at all. One or two lanes to the right side (window side) is always busy due to this kind of selfish lesson. 5. No instruction or supervision I can see there are some lifeguard or staff. But seems like they don't really do their roles. They are just talking each other and chilling. One lady didn't care of other people, so she argued with other people for two days as I saw. Also no control to the private lesson people. Chaos can be seen quite often. 6. Relatively Dark In door pool can be darker than Freibad but here, this pool is quite darker than others. I've visited around 10 indoor pools in Germany and some Outdoor pools. The only reason I come to this place and swim paying 120 eur per month is, cause this is the only pool. A friend of mine who is from this town said, this place has the best sauna throughout Germany. I really hope so.
DJ호연지기 — Google review
I was there on Friday with people coming with their full clothes into the water. ….I thought Germans care about cleanness!…Do German know how dirty it is to go into swimming with full clothes on??…unless they took proper shower and had their clothes out of washing machine before entering Water which I do doubt!…This is absolutely ridiculous and disgusting to allow people to enter any swimming pool with their full clothes on!! What is wrong with these people allowing this nonsense! . This should never be allowed in any public Swimming pool. We have to take a shower and clean ourselVes before entering water, but others can come with full clothes on! Why?? Isn’t this disrespectful to us???
Quantized I — Google review
Best swimming pool in Göttingen. Well maintained and attractive rate for students.
Aswajith S — Google review
The sauna experience was OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much, I plan to visit again soon! I went on a Tuesday evening, the saunas had plenty of room, the food in the cafe was Greek and very tasty, there was a real fire in the seating area and plenty of space to relax. All this magic for a 22 euro ticket, just amazing, keep up the good work!
Dima — Google review
We were there for six hours with the kids, and they enjoyed themselves very much. The place is also enjoyable for adults with two fun slides and a heatet outdoor area.
Mads P — Google review
I had a great time with my friend in both the indoor and outdoor pools and the sauna. The staffs are also friendly. Definitely a good place I will be visiting often to hang out with my friends. And there was discount for students too 😉
Oluwafunmibi F — Google review
I bought a €50 voucher here for my friend because I wanted him to be able to relax in the sauna world after a stressful few weeks. He’s a student doing his masters degree. When he tried to redeem the voucher they charged him the adult instead of concession fare despite him being eligible for the concession fare, and he requested it and showed his ID. Then they refused to resolve the problem when he raised it. He left the establishment feeling frustrated. It ruined his whole evening, probably because he didn’t want to waste my money. He was overcharged a relatively small amount (€5) but it resulted in what I wanted to be a relaxing, fun experience for him to be very frustrating, and I will never buy a voucher here again knowing what I know now. This establishment obviously doesn’t care about the customer’s experience. How hard can it be to fix your own mistake to retain a customer?

City Hall
Nestled in the heart of Göttingen, the Altes Rathaus is a stunning testament to nearly a millennium of history. Constructed in 1270, this remarkable building served as the city's administrative hub for over 700 years and played a pivotal role in local trade and governance. Today, visitors can explore fascinating exhibitions or even tie the knot in its enchanting medieval Dorntze wedding room, perfect for capturing unforgettable moments against a historic backdrop.
Beautiful place place full of history!

🏛 Altes Rathaus Göttingen – The Medieval Heart of the City The Old Town Hall of Göttingen 🇩🇪 (Markt 9) is a magnificent example of North German brick Gothic architecture, constructed in 1270 and serving as the city's administrative center until 1978. Key Facts: • Architecture: A blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles (after 16th-century renovations), featuring guild emblems and sculptures on its façade. History: This was where the city council convened, justice was administered, and prisoners were held in its basement cells. The Oath Hall (Schwörsaal) with 14th-century murals is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. Today: The building hosts exhibitions and events, remaining a symbol of the Hanseatic city's independent spirit. Did you know?: During the Thirty Years' War (1632), King Gustav II Adolph feasted here, and in the 18th century, the town hall was nearly demolished due to its dilapidated state! (Translated by Google) A very impressive building! Unfortunately it was still closed when I was there. You can see how rich the city was back then, having previously been a member of the Hanseatic League. The large square with the famous Gänseliesel fountain in front of it is very large and offers enough space for the urban spectacles that take place here!

(Translated by Google) The old town hall has always fascinated me since I was a child. The city coats of arms of the Hanseatic League can be seen just in front of the ceiling. The special thing is that the old council chamber has underfloor heating, which still works today as it did shortly after the construction and completion of this historic town hall. The registry office used to be housed in the old town hall. In the 1970s, a new town hall was planned and built because the premises had become too small for the various needs of the administration. For several years now, civil weddings have also been taking place in the historic ambience upon request. Göttingen is always worth a visit.
Martina — Google review

Kiessee in Göttingen is a charming small lake that offers a perfect setting for a leisurely picnic with friends on a sunny afternoon. The city of Göttingen, known for its vibrant student population, provides numerous opportunities to socialize and engage in cultural activities. With the Kultursemesterticket, students can access various events such as theater performances and symphony concerts either for free or at discounted rates.
It's spring, and the flowers and trees around Lake Kiessee in Göttingen are blooming once more. On weekends, I jog past this location and occasionally stop at the exercise area. Others stroll about the lake, having fun and playing. The lake breeze, birds chirping, seeing people in canoes, and hearing the waves on the lake are all soothing. I came here today since the sun was shining and I thought it would be beneficial to walk in the sun for vitamin D and as a natural disinfectant. The last time I reviewed this lake was in the winter when the entire lake was iced over. Goodness! It was wonderful to walk to the lake in the sunshine.

Located at the intersection of Kornmarkt and Groner Strasse/Lange-Geismar-Strasse, Bratwurst Glöckle is a hidden gem known for serving the best bratwurst and currywurst in town. The cult snack bar exclusively prepares its 'three-course menu' on charcoal, resulting in a sumptuous flavor that has earned it high praise.

Forum Wissen, located near the railway station, is a museum that delves into the concept of knowledge and its creation. The museum offers an interactive experience where visitors can walk through a blind alley known as the "Holzweg," symbolizing the path taken by scientists.
A lovely museum capturing the history of the University of Goettingen. The main exhibitions explore the different contexts in which knowledge is generated, with informative ans interactive displays in English and German. The museum is free and has a lovely café inside. Definitely worth a visit!
Tiaan S — Google review
It’s truly a beautiful and worthwhile museum to visit. Entry is free, and it can be explored in about 1 to 1.5 hours. It covers a wide range of topics—from physics to geography—and is very informative. There are also explanations in English. I highly recommend trying the *"How can we save the forest?"* experience.

Very beautiful museum, its big, interactive and extremely organized and clean. The staff in the cafe and reception were two ladies they were very lovely. Its free which a plus :)

Very nicely laid out museum with many sections. We didn't fully understand them all, but there was a lot of diversity of sections. Some quite interactive too! It is free to enter and you can use an app or their device to have a verbal tour. There is also a cafe and lockers to put your things. You just need a 1 or 2 € coin which you get back. A good experience.

A museum for natural science nerds! The entrance is free. Make sure to visit the huge whale hanging from the ceiling of the cafeteria!
Alireza B — Google review
Pictures do not render justice. It is not a museum, not a collection, but a thematically organised journey across collections, museums, the town, and the University. It is a meaningfully realised building, interactive and aesthetically very pleasant. It is definitely worthy of (more than just one) visit.
Laura P — Google review
Review *only* about the Mini Mathematikum. Right in the city centre, open on Sundays, free. The indication says it’s for kids from 3 to 8 years and I think it’s accurate. The room it’s a good size, with good heating, good natural light and with enough activities to spark interest and entertain the kids without being overwhelming. It’s in fact “mini”, so after about 1 hour everything has been thoroughly enjoyed and it’s time to go :) A sign on the wall said the exhibition is changed once a year to keep it new. The museum shop has some experiments and books for kids at reasonable prices. Negatives: the acoustics were very annoying. The sound of playing children was resonating in the very tall room and it was very tiring very quickly for everyone. Definitely some acoustic isolation needs to be added.
Rebecca S — Google review
I've really enjoyed the Forum Wissen. I couldn't easily get the app because my Google Play is foreign which meant I couldn't do the interactive things but I don't think it mattered. I believe I could have borrowed a phone from reception. Really nicely curated and some very interesting aspects. I think in some ways things were arranged a bit randomly, but I guess the point is to explore science and knowledge more than it is to display a thorough range of artifacts. I've had a good time and the cafe is really nice. Very comfy seat and a good hot chocolate!

(Translated by Google) In advance of a group leisure time over the Ascension Day weekend in 2024, we explored the Wichert Earthquake Observatory in Göttingen in November 2023. We were thrilled and arranged a viewing appointment. Now on the Friday after the holiday the time had come, with 26 participants and 5 supervisors we visited the earthquake station. It was fascinating for everyone to listen to the statements by Ms. Bartels and Mr. Wedeken. Almost everyone was interested and enthusiastic, and some participants even asked questions. The spectacular fall of the iron ball weighing around 4 tons did not leave some participants alone even in the evening. After the tour, we were able to eat the lunch packed by the JHB on beer tent sets. Thank you very much for everything.

Dr. Curdt and Mr. Reinhardt guided us through the exhibition (even bilingually) with incredible passion and enthusiasm, and opened it especially for us that day. (Translated by Google) Very interesting tour and free of charge, although a voluntary donation is definitely appropriate. Unfortunately, it is also a very dry theory. For children it is more of a test of patience and not as exciting as the Show with the Mouse posters initially suggest. One could definitely go into more detail about the exhibits on display, provide a little more visual content and also prepare more experiments to illustrate them. The way the seismographs work is also discussed somewhat superficially, although many more interesting details could certainly be explained. Be that as it may, overall it is still super exciting to take the tour of the oldest earthquake monitoring station in the world.

⛪ St. Jacob's Church in Göttingen 🇩🇪: A Masterpiece of North German Gothic The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Jacob (Jacobikirchhof 2) is one of Göttingen’s oldest churches, built in the 14th century as a Gothic hall church. Key Historical Highlights: Main Altar (14th c.) — a rare example of medieval sacred art. The tower survived a fire in the 16th century, gaining its distinctive half-timbered level with a dome — now a city landmark. Modern Touches: The choir and southern aisle feature striking stained-glass windows by Johannes Schreiter (20th c.), blending modernity with tradition. 1990s Restoration uncovered stunning wall paintings from c. 1480, hidden for centuries under layers of plaster. Did You Know? The church once served as a stop for pilgrims on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago), symbolized by a scallop shell motif inside. An oasis amid metropolis. Saint John of Goettingen, the main church of Protestant denomination, is a Gothic building from the thirteenth century. The market church used to harbor a chamber for the bell ringer in its tower. The inner hall is due to be renovated for the time to come. A remarkable monument 💛

The Deutsches Theater Göttingen is a historic building with stunning architecture. It is one of the oldest structures in Gottingen and exudes a delightful atmosphere. The acoustics in the theater are pleasing, as expected, but the seating arrangement on the top floor can be problematic if you end up in the corner rows. To ensure an optimal experience, it is advisable to book seats in the center rows.

The place has a history and a very beautiful architecture. It is one of the oldest buildings of Göttingen and the place has a really nice ecstatic vibe. The sound echo in the whole theater is really pleasant as expected but on the other side seating positions (or seating plan) on the top floor is a bit terrible as you cannot see anything, if you get the corner rows. ADVICE : Always book centre rows if possible for the best experience.

This place is great for all kids who just want to let out some steam, run around, jump, climb, slide and lots of other things to do.. They also have a small race track which kids can race around, but that is extra, but it's not that expensive to buy the coins, 🪙for the go- carts.. Parents also have a chance to sit down at tables and relax while the kids are in a safe closed environment to play.. 🎠 They also serve food, like fries,🍟 chicken nuggets, curry wurst, Popcorn,🍿 prizel🥨🍪🧃..Typical food that kids like to munch🍩 on and of course coffee, lattes☕ for the Adults as well.. On the weekends or hoildays it does get a bit crowd so, it's best to go during the weekdays if you can.. kids can also celebrate their birthdays🎉🎂 there as well..Not sure how much that is,💶 but I am sure the staff can definitely help you in that department.. One more thing, shoes👟🥿 are not🚫 allowed inside the play areas, so bring your house shoes are anti slip socks🧦 with ya, because you are not allowed to go barefooted👣.. I do think you can buy sock at the cashier in the front incase you forget them as well.. I have been there several times now with my girlfriend and their kids and it never fails, they always have a great time.. I just wished it was a bit closer to me, since it doea take me about 45 mins to get there, 🛣️but it's worth the trip each time.. The bar offers a wide selection of local beers and provides a great place to unwind with friends. With friendly staff and an inviting interior, NAUTIBAR is the perfect place to enjoy some local flavors or borrow card games for added entertainment.
Nice craft bar. Friendly stuff. Great interior design. Some local craft beer selection, OK but nothing special.

One of my favorite places in Göttingen. The atmosphere is very good, especially the employees are extremely polite and fast. In general, you will not have a problem finding a place. You should definitely stop by to try local flavors.

If you are in Göttingen and you don't know were to get a drink try out this bar. The design is great, there are multiple place to, couches, tables in the corner, chairs, big tables, smoking area and of course bar. Also they have a variety beers. Each with it's own character and flavor, that you won't get in most other bars.

This is a great place. Service is very friendly. It takes a little longer when you sit downstairs, but it is no problem. They brew their own beer that is amazing and offers 6 or more different types of beers. Location is directly in the centre. We go there very often and everyday is a new, interesting experience.
Nora C — Google review
Good selection of beers, also local. Prices are bit high in comparison to other bars. Service can get somewhat confused when it's full. The last time the waiter forgot about our orders a couple of times. Still a nice place to go for a relaxed beer.
Lucas G — Google review
The nautibar has some fantastic design details. The atmosphere at the entrance room is great. I love the worked iron pending all other the place, and the beautiful counter... However, the big room (exception the last corner) and the downstairs do not really match the entry room comfort. The beers are quite good. Being craft, depends on the time and what you get. The IPA is fresh and satisfyingly bitter. Found the dunkel A bit sour the last time - but again, its craft. Some time ago I found it super nice. Why the three starts? For the rest of the menu. It is incredibly boring. With a interior design like that and the whole space (even only inside in winter) I would have completely rethought sometimes that would match the great location and beer.

Stadtwald Göttingen is a sprawling nature area covering over 1,000 hectares, offering a refreshing contrast to the city's cultural attractions. The forested trails are perfect for walking and biking, with opportunities to encounter wild deer, boar, woodpeckers, foxes, and even wild cats. Families can enjoy the playground and a small zoo where kids can feed the animals. Visitors can spend an entire day exploring the diverse landscape on foot or by bike.
It's not a too exciting nature landscape like in a national park. But as a "Stadtwald", it is just great. We've done many trips now from 30 minutes to 7 hours of hiking and biking and there is plenty to see and explore.

Bismarckstein, also known as Bismarck Stone, is a monumental structure located near the Klausberg in Gottingen. Erected in 1903, this imposing monument reflects the gigantomaniac architecture of its time. While some visitors are overwhelmed by its grandeur and appreciate the picturesque surroundings for selfies and walks, others approach it with mixed feelings. The area offers small trails and beautiful autumn colors, making it a nice spot to enjoy nature.

I just stumbled across this tower thingo. There was no information about it anywhere, so it was a bit random. Graffitied and a bit messy, but nice forest around with a few short trails. The Bismarckstein in Göttingen is a Bismarck monument near the Klausberg (Auf dem Toppe). The memorial was built in honor of the former Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and is popularly known as the elephant toilet because of its grotesque shape As part of the national Bismarck worship in the German Empire a "club for the edification of a Bismarck column at Göttingen" 1900 was been founded to jointly chaired by the Rector of the University and the Mayor Georg Friedrich Calsow in addition to the already built in 1896 Bismarckturm a Bismarcksäule to be built according to the design "Götterdämmerung" by Wilhelm Kreis, which emerged from the tender of the German Student Union in 1898 . Otto von Bismarck started his law studies in Göttingen in 1832/33 and was the best-known alumnus during the time of the German Empirethe Georgia Augusta . However, after the Auf dem Toppe square had been selected on the condition that “the pillar is set up so that it can be climbed so that it can be used as a viewpoint”, the concept and design by the city architect Friedrich Jenner changed , which provided for an unusual limestone structure similar to a fire altar , was approved at the general assembly of the association on June 14, 1902. The construction was responsible for the builder Rudolf Hannig (Hannover); the foundation stone for the unusual building was laid on June 21, 1902, the inauguration for the solstice celebration on June 21, 1903. The construction costs of 18,000 markswere raised through fundraisers and contributions from the association.

Doubtful, that's what I think. I approach the Bismarckstein (Bismarck Stone) with mixed feelings. Sure, it's an overwhelming monument in a lovely area. And, opened in 1903, its gigantomaniac architecture is also a child of its own time. On the other hand, this is too much for me. It's supposed to be an altar - what for? That Prussian belligerence? The so great German empire? Thank God, we're over it.

Evangelical church
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St Jacob is a Gothic church located in the old part of Gottingen, standing at 72 meters and offering the highest reach in the city. The church features a stunning golden altar dating back to 1402 and offers visitors the opportunity to climb up to the bell tower for a breathtaking view of the city. Climbing up historic, narrow wooden ladders allows you to experience firsthand how a church roof and tower are constructed while enjoying panoramic views over Gottingen.
⛪ St. Jacob's Church (St. Jacobi) in Göttingen 🇩🇪: One of the Three Main Historic Churches of Göttingen St. Jacobi was founded between 1361 and 1368 as a Gothic hall church—a spacious structure with aisles of equal height. Its 72-meter tower, completed in 1433, long served as an important landmark for travelers. However, in 1721, a fire broke out in the tower, destroying its spire. It was replaced with an unusual Baroque-style wooden half-timbered structure and a dome, giving the church its unique silhouette. From Medieval Frescoes to Modern Stained Glass: • The main altar was likely created during the church's heyday, around the late 15th century. • In the 1980s, the renowned artist Johannes Schreiter added abstract stained-glass windows, creating a striking contrast with the ancient walls. • During restoration work, frescoes from 1480 were discovered hidden beneath layers of plaster. They were carefully restored, revealing biblical scenes and intricate patterns. Trials Over Time: War, Stables, and the Threat of Demolition: • During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the church was repurposed as a warehouse and stable. • In the 19th century, city authorities planned to demolish St. Jacobi, but local citizens fought to preserve it, proving its cultural significance. • The 1490 bell still rings from the tower today—one of the oldest in the region. St. Jacobi Today: Spirituality and Music: • Today, the church remains an active Lutheran parish and a cultural venue. Its organ and acoustics attract musicians from across Europe. Méliès is a charming small cinema housed in a former Baptist church near the Burgerstrasse. The church, dating back to 1903, stood empty for 35 years before being repurposed into this unique cinematic experience. The former altar now serves as the stage and screen, while the preserved gallery maintains the building's original character. With comfortable seating and excellent views, it offers a cozy bistro area and a slightly different film selection from larger cinemas.

The St.-Albani-Kirche, an ancient Gothic basilica dating back to the 14th century, serves as the old university church of Saint Albani. A moderate Gothic basilica from the fourteenth century, that is the old university church of Saint Albani: Our university counts to Germany's most renowned and historic instutions of teaching and research. Scientists graduated from there have changed our world through history. The architecture of the many faculties is as manifold as their fields of study: there are older buildings from the enlightenment within the town centre. The city has grown, so does the university. Modern structures like the northern campus are composed of grey concrete facades as well as the latest edifications. Brutalism meets Urbanism, sort of innovative discord, you are asked your invidual approach

The Kunsthaus Göttingen is a contemporary art gallery that was established in 2021 as part of the Kunstquartier project. It serves as a dedicated space for showcasing modern art, including works on paper, photography, and new media. The initiative to create this art quarter came from publisher Gerhard Steidl and mayor Wolfgang Meyer in 2008, aiming to address the lack of museums and exhibition halls in Gottingen.
(Translated by Google) We were there as a children's birthday party. First, the children were accompanied through the exhibition and were able to ask any questions that came to mind about this topic. Afterwards there was a workshop in which small animated films were created. The children learned something and had fun and it was also a nice experience for the parents, so that they weren't completely exhausted after the day, despite the large number of children. (Clear recommendation: don't just dump children, but stick with it. It's worth it!) (Original) Wir waren als Kindergeburtagsaktion dort. (Translated by Google) The “Kunsthaus” is an aesthetic crime. The concrete block severely damaged the historic half-timbered ensemble on Düstere Straße, which was a defining feature of Göttingen. The luxury version of a high-rise bunker that only appears to take the historical development into account. Something similar was done in Höxter in the 70s. One can only wish the bankrupt city the demolition and reconstruction of the destroyed historic houses in a better future. Since the "Kunsthaus" is not sustainably financed, it is now becoming a concrete block on the public's leg, as a result of personal vanities. In Peru, such investment ruins are called elefantos blancos - white elephants. Surprisingly, the ancient salt mines at Saline Luisenhall GmbH have been producing refined salt for approximately two centuries. These historical salt works continue to operate and contribute to the production of high-quality salt.
Amazingly enough there're even the old salt works which have refined salt for about two hundred yeard!

I wanted to visit Saline Luisenhall to see the salt extraction process and buy some product. The site was easy to find after taking a bus from the town centre, however, there was nothing there! I could not find any sign of an office or shop. No people around to ask questions or anything that would suggest that a tourist was welcome. The one sign on the exterior wall had a large arrow pointing to the left of the buildings but this didn't lead anywhere either. The salt beauty treatment was in a modern building and that could be found.

🌳 Göttingen’s Stadtwall: A Green Ring of History The Stadtwall in Göttingen 🇩🇪 is a picturesque belt of parks and tree-lined paths encircling the city’s historic center. Once a formidable fortress wall with towers and moats protecting the city, it is now a place for leisurely walks, relaxation, and encounters with history. From Fortress to Park: • In the Middle Ages, Göttingen was surrounded by defensive walls with gates and watchtowers. • By the 18th century, as the city expanded, the fortifications lost their military purpose and were gradually dismantled. • In 1765, the former ramparts and moats were transformed into a promenade—one of Germany’s earliest examples of repurposing defensive structures into public spaces. The Oldest Linden Tree on the Stadtwall: • One of the most notable landmarks here is the ancient linden tree, planted around 1765. This tree silently witnessed the Enlightenment era, when city walls gave way to boulevards. • Age: ~260 years. • Location: Near the former Albanitor (one of the old city gates). • Interesting fact: Such linden trees were planted as symbols of peace and prosperity after the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). The Stadtwall Today • Length: ~3 km—perfect for a scenic stroll. • Architecture: Fragments of old walls and towers remain, like the Junkernschänke (a former defensive tower, now a café). • Nature: Shady avenues of chestnuts, oaks, and—of course—linden trees. Visiting the Stadtwall is a journey through time: from medieval fortifications to the romantic promenades of Goethe, who once walked these paths. And the ancient linden near Albanitor? A living legend bridging past and present. 🌳✨ More interesting places here: inst:ph_itinerarium, inst:itinerarium_sacrum

(Translated by Google) A quiet place in the hustle and bustle. That's how I would describe the city wall. If you quickly feel like your head is about to explode, you will find yourself here again. I think it's great that everyone has the opportunity to enter this wall in many places and that it covers almost the entire city center. If you don't feel like meeting a lot of people and, as I said, you want to switch off and get some fresh air, then the wall is really just perfect. Switch off and look up every now and then and start running. Enjoy your walk. (Original) Ein stilles Örtchen im Getümmel. So würde ich den Stadtwall beschreiben.
