Park
Waterfront Park and Playground is a charming local spot located right on the beautiful waterfront. On Saturdays, visitors can enjoy the Spirit Square Farmers Market from 9 am to 12 pm, offering fresh baking, produce, and handmade items. The park features a fun pirate ship themed playground suitable for kids ranging from 18 months to around 12 years old. There's also a nice grassy area where parents can relax while watching their children play.
Lovely local spot right on our beautiful waterfront with a very fun pirate ship themed playground which is fun for a wide age range of kids (probably 18 months to 12 yrs ish). Nice grassy area to sit and watch the kids play. Cute little shops and small restaurants all around. Public washrooms are dingy but kept relatively clean. We are locals and come here with our kids (1.5 and 3.5) often.

(Translated by Google) Great quiet spot for a sunset. There are a lot of benches and a seal even swam past at sunset :) also lots of options for eating. Park
Victoria Quay is a stunning destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational activities. With its excellent fish cleaning station, visitors can enjoy the thrill of fishing while knowing that waste will nourish local wildlife in the sea. The area is alive with opportunities to spot bears, eagles, salmon, and other fascinating creatures throughout the year. The well-maintained boat ramp allows for easy access to water adventures, although wind conditions can influence your plans.
There are picnic tables that line the boardwalk. Great for searching for critters in the water and on the opposite shore. Raccoons, sea lions, mink, otters, eagles, bears, etc. I have spotted bears most often in September.
S S — Google review
Beautiful view as always. There were a couple of seals, a variety of birds, and a mink hopping around below us.
Joan B — Google review
Nice place to park and sit or walk. I went there because I wanted to see bears across the river. Was even told by food server in Port Alberni "OH yes, you'll see bears there for sure!" Did NOT see bears and was told later by a local that this (Late July) is not the right time of year for bears to be fishing. Disappointing but nice park anyway.
Christie W — Google review
Great spot for a walk or bbq day pic nic. Really nice and clean!
Karen L — Google review
Fabulous location next to the river. Good choices on menu. OMG blue burger was great. Wife's muscles and clam combo went down well. Good service at lunch time. Nice experience. Would recommend.
Cliff B — Google review
Great nature spot with local food near by!

Such a pretty spot to sit on a bench and have coffee. We saw seals--which for us Montreal tourists was a thrill. :)
Miss M — Google review
Nice area for a short walk. Everything was blooming in late March. No sightings of bears across the river, which would have been amazing to see. Lots of free parking and restaurants around.

A nice place to start your walk around the dyke. Very popular park for a play date or picnic. Lots of grassy field area for games or the spray park when the water is on. Parking is okay.

This is a spray and play park as well as a park. Very nice setting which offers lots of room to run around and play. Washrooms are close by in what looks like a house, closer to the walking path (Kitsuksis Dyke).

Wonderful park with playground, water park (operates in summer months), ample grassy space for a picnic or a play, covered gazebo, flush washrooms, and access to a beautiful 2.5km long loop hiking path (Kitsuksis Dyke).

This little trail never disappoint! In good weather or rainy season is still relatively dry and very accessible. You can make it short or as long as you want by taking different paths. It is well marked so just take a snap of the map, be on your way and enjoy.

Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park near Coombs, is a must-visit attraction on Vancouver Island. The park is home to ancient Douglas fir trees, some over 800 years old, surrounded by lush greenery and moss. Hiking trails are easily accessible with boardwalks, suitable for all levels of hikers. This natural wonder is one of the best things to see on Vancouver Island and can be explored at Goldstream Provincial Park or MacMillan Provincial Park.
A Magical Forest Experience Cathedral Grove is truly a breathtaking destination. The towering ancient Douglas fir trees create a serene and almost otherworldly atmosphere. Walking through the well-maintained trails, you can feel the history and majesty of this old-growth forest. The trails are easy to navigate, making it accessible for all ages, and there are plenty of spots to pause and take in the natural beauty. The light filtering through the canopy creates a magical effect, perfect for photography or just quiet reflection. Parking can get a little crowded during peak hours, so arriving early is a good idea. But once you're there, the peace and beauty of the grove make it well worth the visit. This is a must-see spot for nature lovers and anyone visiting Vancouver Island.
Hashmeet S — Google review
A walk through an incredible forest 🌳 A dream for any nature enthusiast, this place won’t disappoint. A wonderful place to check out large tall trees, vegetation, moss, and mushrooms 🍄. The place is accessible with outhouses and a nice board walk. Do be careful as the board walk is slippery when it’s wet, so walking with crutches or canes might be a challenge. Great they put this in place, as it’s an easy way to check out an amazing forest without needing to take a lot of time, however you will want to spend a lot of time here as it’s quite surreal to be there. Definitely worth the stop to check out
Ramesh F — Google review
Our favourite old growth forest. Those trees are so old and beautiful and protected. There’s a boardwalk now. Twenty years ago you could hug a tree. This is a must visit in Macmillan Park. Plenty of parking. Lots of photo opportunities.
Franklin B — Google review
Stunning place!!! It’s feels unreal! Not hike but a simple walk, though right now is rainy season so I highly recommend waterproof shoes as there are many puddles and it’s muddy. Highly recommend to stop here! It’s just by the highway and there’s quite a bit of parking too
Coline — Google review
A simply magnificent area of old growth and super tall trees. Definitely worth the drive. The day use parking area can fill up quickly. Care and attention to vehicle traffic in the area is important. This is an easy walking trail that is on flat ground. There are a few different loops to choose. It does have some sections of wood board wallks in wet areas . I would recommend not bringing brand new white footwear. It can be wet with some muddy areas. Although it is fun to watch people trying to keep their white shoes clean. LOL.. The tall trees are majestic and help one to easily imagine a time when these tall trees were the norm. So many Instagram worth photos can be taken. I look forward to returning.
Zander M — Google review
Both trails A and B were stunning, easy walking trails. We took our time going through the trails, so we were there maybe 1 1/ 2 hours. Both were picturesque trails with the fresh smell of a true forest trail. Some of the trees were giant - approximately 9m wide! It felt surreal being amongst them when trees are being torn down all around us to build subdivisions and 33-floor apartment buildings. It truly is astonishing to experience!
Kris S — Google review
This is a must see for any large tree lovers. There are two sides to the park, separated by a highway. The whole area between the two parks is a pedestrian crossing, technically, but one must be super cautious as not every car knows that (despite the many signs and flashing lights 🤪). The side with the bathrooms has a wide, level wooden path that makes it accessible for all. The other side is more gravel and less even but still very accessible - just something to be mindful of if you’re walking with a cane, or using a wheelchair. This is a lovely space to just take it all in, slow down, and be in awe.
Dottie S — Google review
Very nice loops. It doesn't take very long and is definitely good for beginners. The trees are very beautiful and it feels like a jungle. Of course it is quite crowded, so make sure to have enough time to find or wait for a parking spot. If you're sensitive to smell, avoid the "toilets", they are really just for emergencies in my opinion.

A Nature Lover's Paradise! MacMillan Provincial Park is an absolute gem. Gorgeous old growth forest, a breath of fresh air in the most literal sense! A nice quick stop to enjoy a nice walk. Just please be careful and don't cut across the highway to pull a UTurn! It IS A highway after all.
Joel S — Google review
Cathedral Grove is incredibly majestic. The walkway is elevated for a good portion with an opportunity to go off trail near the creek. A beautiful place to honour the trees
Patricia M — Google review
It's a must visit if you are travel this area. An old growth fir forest in just a few steps away. The new boardwalks offer visitor a much easy way for walking. I remember I got all my shoes wet after the walk years ago. Now the park separates into 2 parts. You don't have to cross the highway again. Actually, both sides of the walk is quite the same. We walk the new part boardwalk in the morning then I head to Port Alberni then we walk the old part on the way back to Parksville. Parking is still a problem so try to go there in the morning. We can learn many things about our old growth forest in this park.
Wah Y — Google review
A must if you’re traveling toward the coast. This old growth stand of giants is spectacular. Lots of educational bits for the kids and great photo opportunities. There are lots of pit toilets available as well if you need to stop. They were really clean when I was there.
Walt N — Google review
Love old huge trees and this park have a lot of them. There are 2 trails, one on each side of the road. One side is full of old big trees, beautiful.. and other side have nice wooden bridge/trail and access to the creek. You will need like an hour to see both trails, but You must stop here. It is pretty great.
Ivana K — Google review
A great place to enjoy nature. I enjoy walking the interpretive trails. There are signs here and there educating us about the trees and also critters. Some trees are so tall, it's stunning to look at. Nice fresh air. It's what you want.
Wandering S — Google review
This is a must visit place if you are in Victoria island, this place is so beautiful to be at and you learn so much more about the flora which adds a lot to the knowledge. Being here and witnessing nature's way in these massive trees is indeed a blessing. I considered myself very lucky to be able to travel to this place, everything about nature inspires me and makes me so happy.

The waterfall and fish ladder are highlights, offering great photo opportunities and a chance to see wildlife up close. The trails are easy to moderate, making it an enjoyable visit for all ages.
Hameet R — Google review
Great short visit to the park, entrance is free. If you are lucky, you can watch bears catch salmon in early October. We just missed the bears @ mid-October, but saw many salmon fighting the river current. Worth the drive off the main highway to spend an hour or so.
Scott B — Google review
Beautiful location! There is a lovely trail along the river. We even got to see the salmon swimming upstream, which was an incredible experience!
Christina M — Google review
Is there anywhere in Vancouver Island that isn't beautiful.. NOPE! Beautiful landscape and beautiful trees. Paths that follow the river's edge with grades of rapids and slight water falls. Look into the water and you will see the salmon.. Bring a bathing suit because you will want to go in. If you're going to walk down the steeper paths then you need some grip/treaded shoes to prevent slipping. Paths mostly easy. Great location..
G P — Google review
Nice little walk along the river with a rewarding view down some canyons and also some waterfalls. So worth it, check it out.Absolutely loved seeing the salmon runs. It was such a cool experience. Was here hoping to see some bears but didn’t see any today. Great stop on the island!
Muhammad A — Google review
We stayed here twice in September 2023, about 2 weeks apart. First time we got there around 11am and snagged the last available camping spot. The salmon were running, but the river was low-ish and not many were making it up the fish ladders. We did see bears every day. Second visit, later in September after some good rains, the river was up and the salmon were still running so it was wonderful to see them crowding the fish ladders. We saw lots of bears fishing. Campground was not so full this time and we got a fabulous riverfront spot. Great place to stay. Both visits we really enjoyed walking up and down the river to the fish ladders and far lookouts, amazed at the number of fish in the river and delighted to watch the bears. Met one right on the trail at one point, so keep your kiddos close.
B H — Google review
Beautiful place! Pretty easy hike through Beautiful lush green forest. Saw a few bears just being bears. Definitely on the list of favs here on VI.
Jen L — Google review
Awesome experience. Went in late September and salmon were here in droves. Saw them chilling at the bottom of the river, as well as see them jumping up the waterfall. Be sure to go all the way to the end of the trail to get the best experience (you can see salmon in the clear water at the end of the canyon, and salmon jumping up the waterfall). There is also a viewing camera for salmon going through the fish ladder. the canyon itself is gorgeous

Sproat Lake Provincial Park, situated near Port Alberni on central Vancouver Island, offers a picturesque setting for various outdoor activities and relaxation. The park features well-maintained trails leading to high peaks and stunning mountain tarns surrounded by forests and meadows. Visitors can enjoy camping at vehicle accessible campgrounds or walk-in sites close to the lake, with easy access to prehistoric petroglyphs that make Sproat Lake famous.
A great place to spend time on the water. The designated swimming area is clearly marked and safely separated from boats and jet skis. Facilities include washrooms by the parking lot, picnic tables, and access to clean drinking water.
Yulia H — Google review
Just spent four days camping here in our 17ft travel trailer. Our site was at the upper campground so it was about a 1/2 a km hike to the lake and the showers. We enjoyed kayaking on the lake, but it would be great place if you had a boat. The upper campground campsites are larger and more private which we enjoyed. Only pit toilets at the upper campground. Overall a nice clean campground and beautiful lake with spectacular views.
Don Y — Google review
Nice campsites in the upper campground, some with more trees than others. We were rent camping on a very rainy night so drove through the campground to find a site that would suit our needs. Very quiet campground with a welcoming ranger patrolling in their truck. The petroglyphs (~5-10min walk from the parking lot) and lake areas are beautiful and impressive. The beach and picnic areas looked really nice although we didn't use them. Worth a stay - especially with the higher cost of campgrounds and hotels further west toward Ukee and Tofino.
Julia R — Google review
Sandy and clear lake. My favourite on Vancouver Island! Most camping sites are treed and spacious.Fun and organized dragon boat regattas every year!
Sheila A — Google review
Clean lake water and a very good lake for children to play. The parking lot is also wide. There are rock wool sculptures, so I hope you find them as well. The best place for swimming and paddling. It's about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Victoria, so it's a pity that I can't go often.
INHYEOK Y — Google review
We stayed in the Upper Campground, which was spacious, and quiet. However, there are no showers in the upper campground, and you have to walk about 15 Minutes to the lower campground for them. It took us 45 Minutes to find the showers, as there are no signs for SHOWER - they are just hidden in the back two stalls of the normal washroom with no signage outside. Showers also close at 9! Be aware :p
Stacey — Google review
We camped here 3 days. Beautiful lake with decent facilities
Drishti S — Google review
My touristy group of eight (8) adults came to Sproat Lake Park to see the petroglyphs. Carved into a vertical rock face by First Nation peoples long ago, the petroglyphs are just above the water line and visible from a nearby floating deck. It's an easy, short hike on safe, mostly level paths through some woods that run parallel above a shoreline, which borders a HUGE lake. And then a secure ramp lets you walk down to a floating, tethered platform deck, from where you can see and inspect the petroglyphs from a respectful distance. The various carvings look like stylized fish, waves, and other creatures you may have better luck identifying. Then turn around and look at the expansive lake, the occasional boater, and the gorgeous mountains in the distance. What a view - and definitely worth a visit!
