Rimondi Fountain, constructed in 1626 by the Venetian governor Rimondi, is a prominent public fountain in Rethymno. It features Corinthian columns and lion-head spouts that supplied the town with water from Mt Vrysinas. Situated in the Old Town, it stands alongside other notable landmarks such as the Fortezza, Loggia, and Porta Guora.
Lovely little old town with a good mix of new and old shops/restaurants. The people are lovely and cafés so welcoming. Prices are pretty much ok and there is always a good varied menu. Enjoy driving, it is one hell of an experience, if you live in Paris or Rome, you'll have no problem 🤣
Stephen B — Google review
We had coffee & a great late breakfast in the cafe just next to it. Lovely.
Maria B — Google review
The attraction is free to visit. Keep in mind that the fountain is located in a passageway surrounded by many restaurants and shops. Consequently, it gets quite crowded, and you might have to wait a while to take a photo without people in it. I recommend stopping by if you're already in the city or if you're an architecture enthusiast, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for this from the other side of the island.
Mateusz W — Google review
A nice venecian fountain still egzisting. There are some nice caffee beside. Still working
JOvi E — Google review
It a nice fountain to visit but it’s not easy to find, it felt like it was hidden a bit. Cafes and taverns are all around it so if you expect a big fountain in the middle of the square then you’ll be disappointed. It’s worth to visit though just a quick selfie and then head to the next stop
Ferenc H — Google review
A beautiful mix of old and new in Rethymno. The fountain blends perfectly with the modern restaurants, and the small square is a lovely stop with plenty of shops and tavernas. Highly recommended!
Ionuț N — Google review
Really nice and pretty, you don't need tickets to go there, you just see it, take pictures if you want and then go on with your trip.
Silia H — Google review
Very pretty village, chilled atmosphere, nice shops, drink and freshen up at the fountain and people watch. Do visit the folk museum to the left of the fountain. It's free, tiny but packed with lovely antiquities, and hosted by a genuinely enthusiastic and welcoming host.

Pepi Boutique Hotel is an adults-only retreat located in the heart of the Old Town in Rethymno. The hotel offers a range of rooms, from relaxed to refined, each with a rustic feel and warm earthy tones. Guests can enjoy the outdoor pool and dine at the on-site restaurant. The hotel's prime location allows easy access to the nearby beach, museums, cafes, and nightlife.
We loved this hotel. Our room was spacious and we had a balcony to sit on after the sun retreated. It was lovely sitting by the pool area. We appreciated its central location. Would gladly revisit.
Philip R — Google review
The location in the old city is perfect. The hotel garden and plunge pool is an oasis in the throng of the old city. The shops, tavernas, bars and ice cream parlours are within seconds from your front door. The hotel is small and friendly with attentive and helpful staff. The rooms are large but a little dated. The bathroom is tiny in comparison to the rest. The garden provides tables and sun loungers and is the location for breakfast.
Nick B — Google review
It’s in the city centre. The staff was really polite, friendly and helpful. A woman named Anna that was working in the front desk was really friendly and kind. The hotel rooms are really cozy. The pool is great but a little small. The breakfast was really good with a lot of options. Great hotel. 10/10 over all experience.
Vkmariam — Google review
Great location with brilliantly warm and attentive staff who, on my wife's birthday delivered a chilled bottle of fizz. Knowledgeable and so friendly. A quiet oasis of calm and peace away from the hustle and bustle of rethmynon but still close enough to the old town bars and restaurants. Can't recommend this hotel enough.

This place is litterally heaven. Small quiet pool with no kids, excellent service, kind staff, perfect location♥️

We had the most wonderful stay! We traveled here with a group of 29 friends for a wedding, and everything exceeded our expectations. The hotel handled such a large group seamlessly, making sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. The rooms were spotless, the amenities excellent, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Highly recommended!

History Museums
Nestled in the heart of Rethymnon, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Established in 1887 and housed within a former soap factory, this museum showcases an impressive array of artifacts that span from the Late Neolithic to the late Roman period. Visitors can marvel at pottery, tools, jewelry, and marble statues that reflect life in ancient Crete.
Beautiful antiquities well arranged for viewing. Most items are from Crete. Beautiful displays of marble statues, jewelry, tools, ceramics, frescos, and ancient bath tubs to name just some of the pieces on display. It’s well worth the visit. It only takes about 30-60 minutes to walk through depending on how much you want to read.
Anne R — Google review
A small, one room museum with many interesting artifacts nicely on display. The entrance fee is very cheap (5€) and it has a little bit of everything. Takes roughly 30-45mins max to get through. I recommend checking it out if you’re in the area :)
Themis T — Google review
A small but powerful look into the large collection of the Rethymno museum. The museum is temporarily housed in this impressive and well preserved building waiting for the new larger museum to be built in the near future. Until then you can browse through the collection’s highlights and get a concise reminder on the historical timeline of Crete’s culture.
Nikos P — Google review
Nice small local museum. Great to learn about the history of the area. Staff was kind and cashier informed us that under 25 get in free, which we were not aware of before coming. We also got free cards.
Venla — Google review
This compact and well-kept museum is situated in the heart of Rethymno, and constitutes an oasis of calm among the throngs of tourists. The exhibits are fascinating and complemented by informative descriptions. Even representatives of the local feline community appeared interested! Staff members were impeccably polite and helpful. Dedicate an hour or two to visiting.
Luca C — Google review
Very small but very interesting museum that covers a large portion of Cretan history
Gonçalo G — Google review
Very good albeit small museum with a lot of history inside. It highlights the story of the region from the early ages and most recent findings. There is literally a single room but one that takes easily 30min to enjoy. Nice staff welcome you and can provide you useful guidance. There is an entry fee but seems reasonable...
João D — Google review
Small but beautiful collection with nice explanations. Definitely worth the visit if you are interested in history and/or mythology! I took the time to read everything and look at each case for a bit and it took me about an hour to walk through the exhibition. Time and money well spent!

Rimondi Boutique Hotels is an elegant accommodation option located in the heart of Rethymnon's Old Town. The hotel consists of three distinct buildings: Palazzo Rimondi, Rimondi Estate, and Rimondi Residences, each offering a unique experience. Guests can enjoy the spa, rooftop terrace, and two courtyard pools while savoring complimentary breakfast at this upscale establishment.
A highlight of our trip! This hotel exceeded our already high expectations. Great location in old town on a narrow street (no car traffic allowed). Steps away from countless great restaurants and yet extremely quiet and peaceful. A lovely little oasis! Staff was warm and friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included with our room and was lavish. A wide selection of sweet and savory - eggs, bacon, savory tarts, meats and cheeses, fruits, breads, cakes, cereal, yogurt, etc - all all the fixings - jams, jellies, honey, raisins, nuts. Cooked to order also available, though I preferred to sample what they had prepared. All was fresh and delicious. Room was spacious and comfortable. Two small pools with seating areas, enclosed in courtyards with ivy-covered walls. Five minute walk (max) to a nice little supermarket if you need incidentals. Our room had a small private courtyard with jacuzzi which we used most evenings of our 5 night stay. During our whole 3 wks in Greece we managed to find really outstanding little hotels but this one was our favorite. Really topnotch and very highly recommended. We would seek this one out again if we were to revisit Rethymno. The only downside was the room could use an extra electrical outlet at each bedside.
Kate V — Google review
We stayed at two rooms - a family of four - one on each side of the hotel. The Estate room (no 2) with pool view has a lot of personality and is highly recommended. The other room was also nice though. The staff are very attentive and smiling - at the breakfast, by the pool, the cleaners or the reception that helps with really good sightseeing advice. The hotel has a romantic and historic atmosphere and sits quite perfectly located to enjoy old town Rethymnon.
Stig G — Google review
Honestly, this did not feel like a 4-star hotel experience. Our first room was so noisy that we had to change to another one. Unfortunately, the second room had a strong smell of mold and an electric cabinet with a door that wouldn’t close, which was both a safety risk and a constant source of noise. Be aware that unfortunately the WiFi is terrible and cuts out every 5 seconds. The hotel itself looks very pretty from the outside, but overall it was not a pleasant stay indide it for me and my family. The staff were very kind and truly did their best, but I cannot understand the prestige or the high price of this hotel, as it did not match the experience we had.
Charlie — Google review
We had a lovely, relaxing stay at Rimondi boutique hotel. Beautifully appointed rooms but the highlight for us was breakfast each morning and Evangilia's warm smiling welcome; it felt like being "home" to have her greet us each day, she provided advice on things to do/see and always asked about our previous day. The pool area is like a piece of paradise. The location is within a 5 minute walk to everything. My only suggestion is to install quiet close mechanisms on the doors (the doors tend to slam and some guests are not considerate). Otherwise a wonderful choice.
Lee K — Google review
A fabulous hotel in the heart of the old town. It was everything we wanted from our three nights exploring the area. The two pools are wonderful and such a plus point especially when you have children and you all need to cool off. The bar areas were great as were the breakfasts. The staff were also brilliant. So helpful and so welcoming to us all. Very good with children. It has a great vibe and we would return. The only thing marking it down to a 4 with the room was there wasn’t adequate storage in the room for a family of four. We didn’t complain at all but would book a larger family room next time. Thank you to everyone for making our first visit to Crete so memorable!
Claire D — Google review
WOW is all I have to say. Most beautiful hotel ever - so reasonably priced, stunning rooms in the middle of the old town. Staff are incredible but the pools are breathtaking. Best hotel in Crete!

A gorgeous hotel set in the old town of Rethymno. The staff were lovely and friendly. A lovely selection of food at breakfast. It was like a little oasis. Highly recommend it!! I was travelling on my own so it was absolutely PERFECT!!

I would like to thank everyone for making our stay so perfect. I'm sorry I can't remember everyone's name; Eleni was the first person we met at the hotel and she was charming and professional - we even given a fruit platter one evening; such a lovely touch. All the staff are extremely kind and friendly and the location cannot be beaten. Add to this a wonderful breakfast and...well, you can't get better; we'll be back.

Historic Sites
The Fortezza of Rethymnon is an impressive 16th-century Venetian citadel that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town and port. It is a significant monument in the Old Town, alongside other notable landmarks such as the Loggia, Rimondi fountain, central gate, church of Agios Fragkiskos, and the picturesque Venetian port. The fortress also bears witness to the Turkish occupation with surviving mosques in the vicinity.
It's big area with ancient buildings, a ticket is around 5 €. But it's one of the highest points of Rethymno, you can see wonderful views of the sea from there. You can visit it anytime you want, but the better is to choose not so hot days) There is little cafe inside of area so you can buy a water or Ice cream) If you are in the north side of Crete, you must visit Fortezza)))
Галина И — Google review
Nice and historical place, with a great view of the sea and town. You can spend around one hour there walking along the old walls and admiring picturesque views. The cost of the entrance is 5 euros per person. Unfortunately, ruins seem to be not well maintained and preserved, so you have to be careful during the sightseeing.
Paweł P — Google review
Fortezza – A Worthwhile Visit with Room for Improvement. Historically, Fortezza is a fascinating site and absolutely worth a visit while in Rethymno. The entrance fee is €5 for a single adult, and you can explore the grounds in about 40 minutes to an hour—assuming you can handle the intense July heat and direct sun. The panoramic views of the sea and the city are stunning, offering plenty of breathtaking photo opportunities for those into photography or scenic walks. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. There is no guided tour or detailed signage throughout the site, so those interested in learning the historical context may want to research in advance. Some areas appear to be accessible for children, but I would strongly caution parents—there are several open drops with only a small chain as a barrier and no warning signs. Supervision is absolutely necessary. Maintenance could be improved. We noticed visible garbage in a few of the indoor areas that were otherwise open to visitors. There is a stand-style café inside selling coffee and cold drinks, which seemed popular, though I did not purchase anything myself. Washrooms are available near the entrance, along with a small gift shop offering some interesting items. Overall, the Fortezza is a memorable and culturally rich stop, but it would benefit from better upkeep, clearer safety measures, and more historical information for visitors.
Reza S — Google review
€5 per person. No wait time. It's a nice city view point and you need around 30minutes to stroll around the Fortezza. Not much to see within the area though. Visited in early September at around 12:00 and it was warm and a bit windy, still manageable to walk around for 30minutes.
Gianna O — Google review
Nice place to visit. We payed 12 euros for one kid and 2 adults. The view is amazing, but there is no guide and nothing written about the history of this place. Feels like they don’t invest much of taking care of it. Worth visiting bit could definitely be improved.
Loredana E — Google review
€5 per person. Nice to walk around on a sunny day. Wish there was more information around to explain more about the forts history. I assume this would be available in the museum but the entry wasn’t included in the price of the ticket.
Tom A — Google review
Fortezza is certainly worth a look. The streets up to the Fort when on foot are stunning and then the views from the Fort of the old town are fantastic. I would avoid the midday as there is very little cover or shelter form the sun and it was very hot. The entrance fee was not bad and i would say does reflect the lack of places to see inside.
Stephen B — Google review
We visited this after walking past it numerous times and I think it would've been best to keep how it looks inside in our imagination. The ticket is €5 per adult and even that felt a bit much. The only thing worth seeing here is the view of the city from the fortress. Other than that, the place is just dirt, rocks and some rundown buildings. There is no tour guide or even plaques explaining what you're looking at. This place has so much potential, but it's so badly maintained... Too bad it's being managed by incompetent / uninterested people.

The Stagakis Cretan Lyra Workshop in Rethymno is a must-visit for those interested in the history and culture of Crete. Housed in the heart of the Old Town, this workshop offers seminars on professional ethics and consistency, producing high-quality traditional instruments with passion and love. Visitors can expect a warm welcome from Manolis and his staff, who provide clear explanations about the instruments and even offer demonstrations.
A local gem! My husband is a luthier in Canada and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this third-generation workshop. Manoli was very generous to give us so much of his time and we really enjoyed seeing his beautiful authentic instruments. It’s a short walk from old town Rethymno and was really a highlight of our stay here! Highly recommended!
Kim R — Google review
We visited the Stagakis Cretan Lyra workshop and museum yesterday (20-May-25). Whilst very small, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to see how the instruments are manufactured and also have a demonstration of the various types of instrument which are manufactured on site. The small team at the workshop are very knowledgeable and the entire production process was explained from start to finish. Keeping in mind that these instruments are hand made and small works of art, prices are very reasonable. If you are visiting Crete, I would very much recommend a visit.
ASG P — Google review
Definitely a highlight of our recent stay! Despite not being string players we found this super interesting and enjoyable. Mikaelis demonstrated lots of the traditional instruments for us which was amazing, and he allowed us to have a go. He described the process of building these wonderful instruments in outstanding English which we really appreciated. Overall, a really brilliant experience I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area!
Seren A — Google review
Highly recommend! I’d wanted to buy a baglama for a long time, and I figured there was no better place than Greece. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. They let me try all the instruments to find the one I liked best (which was tough, as they all sounded great). They also gave me a bag, strings, and picks, and even recommended what strings to get in case I couldn’t find special baglama strings later, which was very thoughful. The owner gave me a small tour of their workshop, showed me other instruments, let me play a lyra, and shared a bit about the shop’s history. The price was very fair, especially for a handmade instrument. The quality is excellent, it stays in tune perfectly. Even after a two-hour drive and a four-hour flight back home, I barely had to adjust anything. Overall, it was the best musical instrument buying experience I’ve ever had. Now, I can’t put my baglama down.
Pan D — Google review
Jul 2025 • Family On Monday, July 7th, I had the privilege of visiting the Stagakis Cretan Lyra shop — a place that’s so much more than a store. I’m not a lyra player (yet), and I’ve never played a bowed instrument before — I’ve been playing electric guitar for over 33 years — but something about the lyra kept calling me. And now I understand why. When we arrived — my wife, daughter, and I — the shop wasn’t open yet. Still, the people working there welcomed us warmly. That was the first sign that we were entering a place where hospitality is just as important as craftsmanship. Eventually, we were greeted by Manolis Stagakis, grandson of Manolis Stagakis senior, the legendary luthier who’s widely credited with inventing the modern Cretan lyra. Even though I was a complete beginner, Manolis and his team took the time to show me several instruments, explain the differences, and let me hear and feel the sound. I was blown away by the quality and soul in each handcrafted piece. I ended up falling in love with — and buying — a semi-professional lyra made by Manolis himself: maple body, cedar top, and a katrani fingerboard. It sounds as beautiful as it looks. But this visit was more than just a purchase. Manolis gave us an unforgettable tour of the museum and family history, telling the story of his grandfather and the genesis of the modern lyra. It was moving and inspiring. And just when we thought the visit couldn’t get any better, my wife asked if someone could play one of the baglamas hanging on the wall. One of the co-workers played a beautiful tune — and then, to our astonishment, Manolis gifted the instrument to our daughter. A moment we will never forget. Since then, I’ve started taking lyra lessons in the shop with Tzanis Tzanidakis, a fantastic teacher. The journey has begun. If you’re even remotely curious about the lyra, or if you simply want to see true Cretan craftsmanship and meet people who are passionate and generous, visit Stagakis. You may leave with an instrument — or something even more meaningful. Just like I did. Highly recommended.
Danyael S — Google review
It was a wonderful experience from the first moment we walked in. The musical instruments, the history behind them and the direct hands-on experience made the moment unique and very special to us. It's really close to the old town, so don't miss the opportunity to visit this gem.
Bogdan B — Google review
We arrived very late and close to closing time but were warmly welcomed. It was amazing to hear about the time and skill that go into crafting such beautiful instruments. Everything was explained clearly and every question we had was answered with knowledge and passion. We had the chance to try the instruments and were shown the workshop with demonstration of how the different tools were used and how different sounds could be shared by the carving of the wood. I couldn't recommend visiting this place enough. It has Cretan music history in its 80 out so years' foundations and it's clear it will continue to be a part of its future. No fee for the entry and no hint of pushiness about leaving a tip but I did so gladly.
Nick P — Google review
Absolutely amazing! My husband wanted to buy a handmade instrument, and both of these guys were so brilliant! If you love music? This place is a must visit! Such beautiful craftsmanship! We will be back when we visit Crete again!

(Translated by Google) Weekly market on Mondays (the big Thursday market is elsewhere!!)! Until about 1 p.m. Vegetables, fruit, cheese. But also products of interest to tourists: honey, raki, olive oil, dried figs, raisins, and nuts, etc. The vendors are friendly and happy to welcome tourists who want to buy their products. You can also try many of them! Most of the vendors are also at the Saturday market near the bus station. If you want to buy authentic regional products, you should do it here and NOT in the tourist shops in the old town. The products are priced. This makes it a great place to shop even if you don't speak the same language. (Original) Wochenmarkt am MONTAG (der große Donnerstagsmarkt ist woanders!!)! Bis ca. 13 Uhr. Gemüse, Obst, Käse. Galleria Shopping Center is home to the Cretan Olive Oil Spa, a family-owned business established in 1985 by brothers Ioannis and Michael Kymionis. Very friendly and informative help. 2 floors. Fair prices and excellent products. They will also ship worldwide for a reasonable price. The name of the website/business is "Cretan Olive Oil Spa", but it is not a spa. "Cretan Traditional Products" is the name on the sign.

7 days ago I bought cbd oil 25%, 100ml, in this shop. I came for several days and the saleswoman kept persuading me to buy, I saw that there were some kind of labels on the bottles, so I thought it was okay. However, this oil of oregano has that smell. There is no effect of cbd. I used to take cbd with less % in England and it was great. I have been scammed, . This is a pure fraud and I don't know how they are not ashamed to smear the reputation of a company founded so long ago. I am from Serbia, the oil was bought in Rethymno in the Old Town.
Sladjana C — Google review
Don't buy there, they try to scam you. They are selling 100ml CBD oil labeled with "25% CBD". However it just contains 2.5% CBD and not, as suggested 25%. Furthermore the label stated it contains "Hamp seed oil", it was filled with olive oil. Don't waste your money there.
Thomas K — Google review
First time I have such a bad experience in Crete. The products are not organic. They distract customers by showing things on the screen while the ingredients list (fine print on the box) is full of harmful chemicals. Nothing bio there. The lady put all my products in the bag and sealed it. After a long stroll I got in the car, opened the bag and oh what a surprise it was! I read the ingredients list and also noticed the scrub was opened and used. I returned to the shop to get a refund, they were extremely rude and unprofessional. Basically they told me I shouldn’ve read what was written on the box (in fine print) and not what was on the screen. Lesson learnt and what a waste of money! Ah I forgot to mention she said the expiry date for the magic snail products was 2020 and in fact it’s 04/2019. Steer away from this shop and these products if you don’t want to spoil your day in beautiful Rethymnon.
Zinaida K — Google review
Guys, don't be fooled! The 100ml bottle of 25% CBD oil should contain 25000mg CBD, but not 2500mg as offered in this shop! Fake!!! They are actually selling CBD 2,5% as 25%
Sascha K — Google review
We bought 2 liters of Olive oil. At least that's what we thought. There is a wodden package around the bottle. Now we noticed they charged 2x 1 liter but gave us just 500 ml bottles. Be carefull, it's a tourist trap.
N A — Google review
Overpriced and scammers. The employees try to smoothtalk you into buying genuine products the moment you walk in. Once you pay, a small sum of money is added for peculiar reasons. After I bought it, I realised this small sum was already added on the initial price. Be careful here.
